Trump and Kim sign joint statement promising 'complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula'-Hunter Walker White House Correspondent-,Yahoo News-June 12, 2018

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended their historic meeting in Singapore by signing a joint statement. The document promised “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula” without detailing exactly what that would entail.“President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula,” the statement said, using the North’s acronym for Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.“President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK,” it continued, “and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”The pair signed the document at a ceremony where, according to press pool reports, Kim said through a translator that the pair “decided to leave the past behind” and “are about to make a historic change.” He also expressed “gratitude” toward Trump for joining the talks. Trump said they would begin the denuclearization process “very quickly” and, in response to shouted questions from reporters, said the two would “meet many times” in the future.Their statement described the initial summit as “an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future.”Their remarks echoed positive comments they made throughout their hours of meetings at the Singaporean resort of Sentosa Island on Tuesday. It was the first meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a leader of North Korea since the country’s founding in 1948, when the Korean Peninsula was divided and Kim’s family began its rule. For most of the ensuing 70 years, the U.S. has technically been at war with the repressive regime, because the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. The sight of the two men walking side by side and praising each other before the cameras was a stark contrast to the first year of the Trump administration, when the pair regularly exchanged threats as Kim conducted repeated nuclear missile tests and ramped up tensions in the region to their highest level in decades. Trump’s road to the summit began late last year, when Kim made a series of overtures to South Korea, a U.S. ally, that culminated in talks between the two neighbors. Kim also made gestures toward the U.S., including the release last month of American detainees that had been held in North Korea.Despite the optimism Trump and Kim expressed at their meeting, the agreement they signed contained few specifics of how the pair would move toward peace. There was no description of which programs North Korea would have to cease to be considered denuclearized — or how its cooperation would be monitored. North Korea and the U.S. do not have formal diplomatic relations. While the statement promised that there would be “new” relations between the two countries, it did not say at what level or provide any information about any potential withdrawal of the stiff sanctions the U.S. has imposed on North Korea. The joint statement signed by Trump and Kim included four key points. The pair pledged “to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.” Trump and Kim promised to join their efforts “to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.” Kim reaffirmed a declaration he adopted during his April meetings with South Korea to work with that country on a formal end to the Korean War. Last, Trump and Kim said they would cooperate on recovering remains of prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action from that conflict “including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.”Trump and Kim’s joint statement was not distributed to the press at the signing. Yahoo News was able to obtain the text by zooming in on photos of the documents the pair displayed at the event.Perhaps the most concrete outcome of the statement was a commitment to “hold follow up negotiations led by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a relevant high-level DPRK official at the earliest possible date.”Trump and Kim shook hands before the latter’s departure Tuesday afternoon. As they bid farewell, Trump responded to shouted questions from reporters. He said they planned to meet “many times.” Trump was also asked if he would invite Kim to the White House.“Absolutely I will,” Trump said.

As bulldozers near, outpost residents vow they’ll be back, and they may be right-JUN 12,18-15 families in Nativ Ha'avot neighborhood in settlement bloc south of Jerusalem feel imminent razing will ultimately strengthen their claim to hilltop-By Jacob Magid-TOI

With the court-ordered demolition of their homes just hours away, residents of the Netiv Ha’avot outpost say they will be returning to the West Bank hilltop. It’s a familiar refrain among outpost residents whose homes are demolished, reeling as the bulldozers close in.“Losing one’s home is incredibly painful… but we believe that we will be able to return to houses in the same location. It doesn’t really matter if they’re a few meters to the right or left,” said Itan Hay on Monday. But unlike other outposts, which are usually razed for good, the 15 families of Netiv Ha’avot who are looking at demolition likely have a case, thanks to court rulings coupled with a series of government moves aimed at legalizing their claim on the piece of land abutting the Elazar settlement south of Jerusalem. The September 2016 High Court of Justice ruling that initially sanctioned the Tuesday razing of half of the neighborhood concluded that the houses had been built without the necessary permits on parcels not considered “state land.”However, the ruling was based on a land survey, which found that — save for two narrow strips on which the 15 homes were built — the remaining acreage where more than 20 other families live is considered state land.Recognizing that it could not save the homes affected by the High Court ruling, the cabinet in February approved a proposal to begin the process of legalizing the rest of Netiv Ha’avot. The residents plan on utilizing the authorization of an official building plan to advance the construction of 350 more homes in the neighborhood.“For every home that will be demolished, we will build 30 more in its place,” said Hay proudly.A group of seven Palestinians have claimed ownership of the land on which Netiv Ha’avot was established in 2001, insisting that they were expelled by Israeli settlers. It was their petition that led to the High Court decision ordering the razing. While they possess several documents showing partial ownership of the land since the Ottoman era, the High Court has yet to grant them ownership to any of the land in question. The Peace Now settlement watchdog has backed the Palestinian petitioners, asserting in a Monday statement that the demolition will demonstrate that “anyone who builds on land without authorization or even purchasing it first will ultimately be compelled to leave.”The left-wing NGO called on the government to allow the Palestinians to return to their farms. But Hay claimed that the land adjacent to Elazar had been unworked until the turn of the 21st century. “The community was established in light of the Arab attempt to seize the land,” he said. “It was an ideological decision on our part.”He acknowledged that the Civil Administration — the Defense Ministry body that authorizes construction in the West Bank — had issued demolition orders against the first homes in the neighborhood from the moment ground was broken. However, Hay pointed out that “this is how communities (in the West Bank) were built in the past. Build first and get approval after.”Moreover, the Netiv Ha’avot resident pointed out, the Gush Etzion Regional Council — the local government — had paid for the infrastructure of the homes and told the residents that they would eventually be legalized. To the 37-year-old father of three, the Tuesday demolition is the result of a “leftist” court that “simply opposes settlement in Judea and Samaria.”“There’s a deep feeling of injustice,” he said, lamenting the judges’ refusal to accept alternative solutions proposed by the residents, which included sawing off the problematic parts of six homes which only marginally sit on the two narrow strips of acreage not considered to be state land. But Hay clarified that the feeling was not one of betrayal against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which did not prevent the demolition.“There was nothing for [the coalition] to do because of mistakes it’s made in the past,” he said, explaining that there had been a lack of urgency on the government’s part to legalize the outpost prior to the High Court petition. But he acknowledged the support received from nearly every minister who spoke out against the final ruling.-Explaining it to the children-Hay’s wife Oli was among the first residents of Netiv Ha’avot. Her parents helped establish the neighborhood, moving there with her and her siblings when she was 15 years old.“It’s a combination of personal and communal disappointment,” she summarized. “I think about my parents who helped build this place and now have to watch their daughter’s home be demolished.”She said she’s had a hard time explaining the demolition to her children ages 8, 6 and 1.“It’s hard to explain to a child, ‘look how because of our sacrifice, the settlement movement will be stronger,'” said Oli.Along with many of the other younger children in the neighborhood, the Hays’ eldest son has undergone psychological treatment to prepare him for Tuesday’s demolition. The 8-year-old has insisted on being there on the day the bulldozers arrive, which his psychiatrist has encouraged. “She worked with children during the evacuation of Gush Katif and she said that those who weren’t allowed to be there were left with scars,” Oli recalled. She added that she has been taking her children every day to visit the modular home where they will be living starting Tuesday evening. The state has built a temporary neighborhood on an adjacent hilltop for the 15 Netiv Ha’avot families, who are expected to live there for the next 2-3 years while permanent homes are rebuilt on the original hilltop where the community was founded.“We’re trying to show our kids that it’ll be okay and that we fought for the land of Israel, that we were privileged to settle the land and that we will do so again in an even greater capacity,” said Itan Hay.“We’ve been telling them that at the end of the day, the family is the most important thing. The house is really just stones.”Nonetheless, the Netiv Ha’avot resident recognized that there’s a difference between what he and his wife have told their children and what they’re going to endure.“Every room in our home is full of memories that are pretty much going to be destroyed before our eyes,” Itan lamented. The couple called on Israelis to come to the outpost and support them on the morning of the demolition, though unlike the last major demolition, of the Amona outpost, Netiv Ha’avot residents are vowing to keep their protest peaceful.“We are not calling for violence. We are normal people,” said Itan, employing a line frequently used by the Gush Etzion residents over the past year in their effort to gain sympathy from the broader public.“It’ll be  a very hard day tomorrow, but I want people to see that our dedication is toward the future and strengthening the settlement movement,” Oli said.

Belgium hands suspect in Paris attacks to France for day-Osama Krayem, a Swede of Syrian origin, is thought to have played key role in 2015 Paris attacks and 2016 Brussels bombings claimed by Islamic State-By AFP-TOI-JUN 12,18

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Belgian authorities on Monday handed a key suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks and 2016 Brussels bombings over to France for questioning, ahead of possible terror charges by French prosecutors.Osama Krayem, a Swede of Syrian origin, was transferred “for one day to the French judicial authorities on the subject of his hearing and possible indictment by the investigating judge in Paris,” Belgian prosecutors said in a statement.Investigators suspect the 25-year-old of playing a key role in the jihadist cell behind the attacks in Paris, which killed 130 people, and in Brussels, which left 32 people dead. Both were claimed by the Islamic State group.Krayem is suspected of buying the bags used for the Brussels attacks and was caught on CCTV with suicide bomber Khalid El Bakraoui, both carrying huge backpacks, minutes before one of the blasts. Krayem failed to go through with his suicide attack.Osama Krayem, inculpé pour les attentats à Bruxelles, va être remis à la Francehttps://t.co/C1l3NB5lwy pic.twitter.com/fKpcU2ZcmW— Le Soir (@lesoir) June 8, 2018-Like other members of the cell, Krayem traveled to Syria after 2014, before apparently hiding himself among migrants in order to return to Europe from Syria in 2015.He was arrested in Brussels in April 2016, yet two years later, questions remain over Krayem’s true role in the attacks. Questioned repeatedly in Belgium, he has denied any role in the Paris attacks and in making bombs.According to the terms of the arrest warrant issued by France in 2016, Krayem faces questioning and possible charges for “involvement in terrorist murders,” “associating with terrorist criminals,” and for producing explosive devices.Traces of Krayem’s DNA were found in several hideouts in Belgium used by the Paris attackers, in particular, in the place used to make the explosive belts used in the Paris attacks.

Netanyahu signals possible easing of boycott on far-right Austrian party-PM heaps praise on visiting chancellor, says Jerusalem to 'intensify' contacts with Vienna despite ban on Freedom Party-affiliated minister-By Raphael Ahren and Tamar Pileggi-TOI-JUN 12,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday told visiting Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz that Israel was stepping up contacts with Vienna, heaping praise on his counterpart and appearing to signal a thaw in Jerusalem’s freezing out of a far-right coalition party that has been accused of Nazi links.Netanyahu thanked Kurz for his strong support of Israel and his commitment to combat European anti-Semitism, calling the Austrian leader “a true friend of Israel and the Jewish people,” and Kurz vowed to “raise awareness” of Israel special security needs in Europe.During the meeting, Netanyahu said Foreign Ministry director-general Yuval Rotem has been instructed to “intensify contacts” with the foreign ministry in Vienna, a shift in from Israel’s policy of keeping interactions with the body to a minimum because of its ties to Austria’s far-right.The government headed by Kurz includes the far-right Freedom Party, which Israel boycotts due to its past as a haven for neo-Nazis and its current xenophobic policies.Austrian Jews are also staunchly opposed to the party, known by its German acronym FPOe, arguing that it has not done enough to distance itself from its anti-Semitic past and that it still promotes problematic positions.Since FPOe’s rise to parliament in Austria’s 2017 election, Israel has maintained a policy of keeping official contact with the party at the civil service level only, avoiding any contact with Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who is affiliated with the FPOe (though she is not formally a party member).Netanyahu had previously instructed Rotem to examine how Israel should interact with Vienna in light of FPOe’s rise. One of Kurz’s goals during his trip to Israel had reportedly been to lobby for an end to the FPOe boycott. At a reception held at the Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu highlighted a speech Kurz gave earlier this year in which he acknowledged that Austrians were not only victims of Nazi Germany but also “perpetrators.”“These are courageous and bold words and I think they chart the course that you’re leading in Austria and our relationship, one that I support very, very much,” he said.Netanyahu praised Kurz for his declared willingness to raise Israel’s concerns within the EU, saying that Jerusalem feels that Brussels sometimes fails to take them into considerations.“This is a breath of fresh air. And this is leadership,” Netanyahu said of the 31-year-old chancellor. The prime minister also praised Kurz for visiting the Western Wall on Sunday, saying that he hoped that other European leaders would “follow your important example.”In his remarks, Kurz vowed to advocate for Israel in Europe, and reiterated his commitment to stamp out anti-Semitism, despite his alliance with FPOe.#Austria has in light of its history a special responsibility towards #Israel and the Jewish people. I assured Bibi @netanyahu that Austria will fight all forms of #antisemitism in #Europe with determination and supports the state of Israel as well as its #security needs. 2/3— Sebastian Kurz (@sebastiankurz) June 11, 2018-“We will try to raise awareness in Europe for the special situation and the special security needs of Israel,” Kurz said.Austria will assume the European Union’s presidency on July 1.“We Austrians know that in light of our own history, we have a special responsibility toward Israel and the Jewish people,” Kurz said. “I can assure you that Austria will fight all forms of anti-Semitism in Europe with determination, be it still an existing one, or also newly imported anti-Semitism.”“We also know that our responsibility does not end at our borders and to support the State of Israel and also your security situation,” Kurz said, adding that Israel’s “neighbors are not like ours, Liechtenstein or die Schweiz [Switzerland].” At this point during his remarks, Netanyahu jokingly asked if Israel and Austria could switch neighbors for a few weeks, to which Kurz replied: “Not sure about that, not sure about that.”‘Striving for friendly contact with Israel’-The FPOe is the junior member in Austria’s governing coalition, sitting in government with Kurz’s right-of-center People’s Party.Founded in 1956, it emerged from the short-lived Federation of Independents, launched after World War II by former Nazis who had been stripped of their voting rights. Its first chief was an ex-officer from the Waffen SS and its last one was Joerg Haider, the controversial son of a former Nazi party official.Haider attracted negative publicity by praising the Third Reich’s “orderly” employment policy, calling SS veterans “decent people” and describing concentration camps as “punishment camps.” He was killed in a car crash in 2008.Under FPOe’s current leader, Heinz-Christian Strache Strache, now Austria’s vice chancellor, the party has made strides to distance itself from pro-Nazi views and has adopted strong pro-Israel positions. In December, Strache said Vienna was “striving for an honest, sustainable and friendly contact with Israel,” and vowed his far-right party would be “an essential partner in Europe’s fight against anti-Semitism.”

As Trump-Abbas ties soured, a bad phone line epitomized their broken connection-New Yorker article on interactions between the US, Israel, PA and Gulf states describes a critical call curtailed by tech issues; also reveals Israel-UAE link dating to Clinton era-By TOI staff-JUN 12,18

A major feature published by The New Yorker on Monday claimed to set out the process by which “the President, Israel, and the Gulf states plan to fight Iran — and leave the Palestinians and the Obama years behind.”“Donald Trump’s New World Order,” by writer Adam Entous, is chock-full of fresh details about the interactions between American, Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab leaders, and officials in the Obama and Trump eras.Offering tantalizing insights into behind-the-scenes diplomacy, many of the disclosures are based on anonymous quotes, and few of them have been confirmed. The piece includes revelations concerning a lengthy secret relationship between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, fresh perspectives regarding the ties between Israel and the Obama and Trump administrations, and fly-on-the-wall accounts of conversations between Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Here are 15 of the article’s key insights: 1. US president Barack Obama worked to counter efforts by the Palestinian Authority to join the International Criminal Court, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, shouting in a call with advisers to Obama, likened the Palestinian bid to “a nuclear warhead aimed at my crotch!” The New Yorker notes, however, that “Netanyahu’s office disputes the American account of the call.” 2. Toward the end of the Obama administration’s second term, when then-secretary of state John Kerry came to the White House with maps of the West Bank showing the settlement enterprise, an unnamed official concluded that they proved the two-state solution was no longer viable. Writes Entous: “As Frank Lowenstein, one of Kerry’s top advisers, put it to me, the maps allowed him to see ‘the forest for the trees.’ When the settlement zones, the illegal outposts, and the other areas off-limits to Palestinian development were consolidated, they covered almost 60 percent of the West Bank. ‘It looked like a brain tumor,’ an official who attended the session told me. ‘No matter what metric you’re using — existing blocs, new settlements, illegal outposts — you’re confronting the end of the two-state solution.'” 3. In 2014, when Israel’s ambassador to the US Ron Dermer met Donald Trump during an alumni dinner at the Wharton School of Business, Dermer flattered the future president with a reference to his reality TV show, saying, “Mr. Trump, I wanted to be your apprentice.” Years later, at the Trump inauguration, when a European ambassador said to Russia’s envoy Sergey Kislyak, “You are the most important ambassador here today!” the ambassador smiled and motioned at Dermer. “Actually, Kislyak said, ‘he is the most important ambassador here today.'” 4. Before Trump’s inauguration, Netanyahu secretly sent Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen to brief the incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn, on the threats posed by Iran. “Intelligence veterans,” the New Yorker reports, “said that Cohen’s visit was a breach of protocol.” 5. Israel has maintained a “secret relationship” with the United Arab Emirates that dates back to the early 1990s, although it took a temporary hit when the Mossad allegedly assassinated Hamas arms dealer Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai in 2010. “Early in Bill Clinton’s first term, the UAE wanted to buy advanced F-16 fighter aircraft from the US, but American and Emirati officials were concerned that Israel would protest,” writes Entous of the start of the ties. Instead, Israeli diplomat Jeremy Issacharoff, today Israel’s Ambassador to Germany, said Israel would like to discuss the issue directly with the Emiratis. A meeting was arranged, and this developed into an ongoing series of encounters and the gradual growth of trust. The two countries shared concerns over Obama’s Iran’s deal, though the UAE was more private in expressing its reservations to the Americans. Toward the end of the Obama era, US intelligence agencies “picked up on a secret meeting between senior UAE and Israeli leaders in Cyprus. US officials suspect that Netanyahu attended the meeting, which centered on countering Obama’s Iran deal,” the New Yorker writes, adding that neither side has confirmed this. 6. In meetings with US officials in Saudi Arabia and in the US, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has “routinely remarked that ‘Israel’s never attacked us,’ and ‘we share a common enemy,'” and has “privately said that he was prepared to have a full relationship with Israel.” 7. In September 2016, shortly before the US presidential elections, Netanyahu and Dermer met with Trump, Jared Kushner, and Steve Bannon at Trump Tower, and spoke of the possibilities of Israel-Arab partnerships involving the Gulf states. Bannon was “blown away” by the vision, writes Entous, and he adds: “A former Trump adviser told me that Dermer and Netanyahu ‘had thought this through… and it dovetailed exactly with our thinking.’ The adviser credited Netanyahu and Dermer with inspiring the new administration’s approach to the Middle East. ‘The germ of the idea started in that room… on September 25, 2016, in Trump’s penthouse.’ A friend of Trump’s compared the candidate’s team to a ‘blank canvas’: ‘Israel just had their way with us.'” 8. By the time Trump met with Arab leaders in Riyadh in May 2017, Kushner and Saudi Crown Prince bin Salman “had agreed on the outlines of what they called a Middle East strategic alliance,” in which Israel, for the time being, would remain a “silent partner.” The US would take a harder line on Iran, while the Saudi prince would help ensure an Israeli-Palestinian accord. “I’m going to deliver the Palestinians,” the New Yorker quotes the Saudi prince saying, while Trump “is going to deliver the Israelis.” 9. While Israel sought to have the Trump administration broker a summit, at which Saudis and UAE leaders would also be present, the Gulf leaders firmly declined. Netanyahu, recognizing the sensitivities, stopped pressing for the meeting. 10. Pro-Netanyahu tycoon Sheldon Adelson began writing checks for the Trump campaign only after he “had received a commitment that Trump would, if elected, announce the [Jerusalem] Embassy move on his first day in office.” After Trump’s victory, Sheldon and Miriam Adelson visited Trump Tower and described his win as a “miracle.” When the president-elect said he looked forward to moving the embassy, “Miriam wept with joy. Adelson told Trump, ‘Everything else you do, a thousand years from now, you’ll be remembered for this.'” When Trump subsequently opted to defer the move, “Adelson started to complain. ‘You’re making a fool of me!’ he shouted on the phone to a senior White House aide.” Eventually, the New Yorker writes, “Adelson and others pressured Trump to stop delaying by warning him that he risked losing support among evangelical Christians.” 11. Trump’s relationship with Mahmoud Abbas started fairly well. When Trump first called Abbas two months after taking office, he asked the PA chief, “Can we do a peace deal?” and Abbas eventually answered in the affirmative. Trump then asked Abbas if he thought Netanyahu wanted a deal. “The question astonished Abbas. No American president had ever asked him to assess the intentions of an Israeli prime minister,” Entous writes. “Trump repeated the question. Abbas responded cautiously: ‘He is the prime minister of Israel. We don’t have any other option.’ Trump concurred: ‘You don’t have an option.’” 12. But things soured rapidly, in part because of the PA’s payments to terrorists and their families, and in part because Netanyahu, hosting Trump in Jerusalem, showed the president “a video with excerpts of speeches by Abbas in which, according to the Israeli government’s translations, he incited violence.” By last November, ties had nose-dived and the former Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat was accusing Kushner of “destroying the two state solution.” 13. When Trump phoned Abbas to inform him he was about to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December, the call kept dropping. With Abbas finally on the line, “Trump told Abbas that he was keeping his campaign promise to move the embassy. Trump then launched into an impromptu monologue. One former aide described it as ‘heartfelt,'” writes Entous. “Trump told Abbas that he was committed to getting the Palestinians the best possible deal and that Israel would make real concessions that he would be happy with, if he stayed engaged. He added that Abbas would get a ‘better’ deal under his administration than under Obama’s.” Trump spoke for some 15 minutes, the New Yorker writes, and then waited for Abbas’s reply. “All he heard was silence. Exasperated, Trump asked the operator what was going on. The connection with Abbas had dropped, the operator told Trump. How long was Abbas on the call? Trump asked. The operator said he did not know and asked the president if he wanted him to try to connect the call again. Trump said he might try later.” 14. Trump did contact Abbas again, a few weeks later, in January. Abbas had made an anti-Semitic speech and Trump sent a New York Post article about it, showing Abbas with fists clenched, to the PA chief: “On a copy of the article, Trump wrote a note in large black script, ‘Mahmoud, Wow—This is the real you?’ He signed it, ‘Best Wishes, Donald Trump.'” Abbas and his aides interpreted the message “as charitably as they could,” writes Entous. “Trump’s use of Abbas’s first name and the phrase ‘Best Wishes’ indicated, Erekat said, that Trump was trying to draw Abbas into a conversation.” And so Abbas responded, “No, that’s not the real me.” The PA chief further alienated the administration with another anti-Semitic address in late April, however. 15. Now, as all sides wait for Kushner to unveil the administration’s much-anticipated peace plan, Netanyahu’s assumption is that Abbas will reject it and the question will be how the other Arab leaders with whom Israel is in contact will react. “Netanyahu hopes that Gulf Arab leaders will not disapprove of the new American offer, and opt instead to deepen cooperation against Iran and other enemies,” writes Entous. The New Yorker piece concludes by quoting an Abbas aide as having said to an Obama-era official that “‘our worst nightmare’ would be for Netanyahu to find a way to divide the Gulf states from the Palestinians.” The former US official is then quoted saying, “Bibi’s greatest dream and Abbas’s worst nightmare could be coming true.”

MKs reject ministers’ bid for final say on freezing PA funding for terrorists-Lawmakers authorize final votes on measure to deduct welfare payments paid to Palestinian prisoners and their relatives from tax revenues collected by Israel-By Raoul Wootliff-TOI-JUN 12,18

Lawmakers gave the go-ahead Monday for a final vote on a bill that would slash funds to the Palestinian Authority by the amount Ramallah pays out to convicted terrorists, rejecting a government request to give the top-level security cabinet the final say on whether to “freeze” the payments. The bill, proposed by Yesh Atid MK Elazar Stern and Likud MK Avi Dichter, sys that welfare payments paid out by the PA to Palestinian prisoners and their relatives must be deducted from tax revenues Israel transfers annually to the administrative body. The money thus withheld will instead go into a fund designated to help victims of terror attacks. In a dramatic vote following a tense debate between lawmakers and government officials, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee voted 9-1 to authorize a version of the bill excluding a clause that would have given the government the ability to effectively opt out of the law.Declaring bipartisan support for the tougher version of the bill, lawmakers from both the coalition and opposition railed against the government request for the power to override the measure, saying that including such a clause in the legislation would render it useless.“This is nothing short of neutering the Knesset,” said Jewish Home MK Moti Yogev of the request.“Why do we need a law if we are going to let the government decide anyway?” asked Likud MK Anat Berko. “They can decide now if they want to anyway. The point of legislation is to stop that.”Under the current law, based on the 1994 Oslo Accords that established the PA and the mechanism for Israeli funding, the finance minister already has the ability to freeze funds.“The problem is that no government since 1994 ever did it,” said Likud’s MK Amir Ohana. “They have all kept up this farce.”Citing the recent violence on the Gaza border, including massive damage to agricultural lands from incendiary kites sent over by protesters, Yesh Atid’s Haim Jellin, a former head of the Eshkol Regional Council outside the Strip, charged that the government “clearly doesn’t know how to fight terror.”“This law is, in the most obvious sense, a victory over terror,” Jellin told the committee. “Why even consider not implementing it?”While Dichter, who also heads the committee, proposed a compromise version of the government’s opt-out clause that would have allowed ministers to delay cutting the funds by three months at a time with the permission of MKs, his co-author Stern said he would only agree to “zero flexibility,” adding that if there was the need for a change, it could be done via new legislation. While it was initially proposed by the Defense Ministry, Yisrael Beytenu faction chairman MK Robert Ilatov said that his party’s leader, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, was personally opposed to the softer version of the bill.“The idea of flexibility will be understood by the other side as a weakness on our behalf,” Ilatov said, claiming to speak for Liberman.Tweeting in favor of the bill when it faced a preliminary vote in the Knesset last month, Liberman said of the current situation: “This madness, that we’re transferring money to the Palestinian Authority that is used to encourage terror against us, will cease.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted praise of the measure immediately after the vote, thanking the committee for supporting “my proposal to also deduct funds from the Palestinian Authority for damages caused by fires on the Gaza border. Justice needs to be done. Those who burn fields will pay the price.”On Sunday, the prime minister instructed National Security Council head Meir Ben-Shabbat to work on a process that would withhold payments to the PA to offset compensation for communities living on the Gaza border that have seen tens of thousands of acres of fields and nature reserves destroyed in blazes over the past month and a half. That proposal, however, was not included in the bill voted on during Monday’s committee meeting. Instead, the committee accepted a request made by a representative of the Prime Minister’s Office for the terror victim fund to also go toward compensation for property damage as a result of terror attacks. The measure, which would cut hundreds of millions of shekels from tax revenues transferred to the PA, is similar to a measure recently passed in the US, known as the Taylor Force Act, withholding funding to the PA over stipends to terrorists and their families.According to the Defense Ministry, the PA in 2017 paid NIS 687 million ($198 million) to the so-called “martyrs’ families fund” and NIS 550 million ($160 million) to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club — some 7 percent of its overall budget.Palestinian prisoners serving 20- to 30-year sentences for carrying out terror attacks are eligible for a lifetime NIS 10,000 ($2,772) monthly stipend, the Defense Ministry said, citing PA figures. Those prisoners who receive a three- to five-year sentence get a monthly wage of NIS 2,000 ($554). Palestinian prisoners who are married, have children, live in Jerusalem, or hold Israeli citizenship receive additional payments. The Defense Ministry on Sunday released figures alleging that some terrorists who killed Israelis will be paid more than NIS 10 million ($2.78 million) each throughout their lifetimes by the PA.Critics of the current bill have warned it could bankrupt the PA, leading to its collapse.Meretz MK Issawi Frej, the only lawmaker to oppose the bill in Monday’s committee meeting, said the legislation would not quell terrorism, and may even prevent security forces from tackling it.“The government is responsible for supporting the Palestinian Authority so that it can enforce security in the West Bank. It can’t do that without this money,” Frej said. “This is an unnecessary law that will not cut terror by 1 percent.”Under an economic agreement signed in 1994, Israel transfers to the PA tens of millions of dollars each year in customs duties levied on goods destined for Palestinian markets that transit through Israeli ports. The PA has refused to cease its payments to Palestinian prisoners. In June 2017, PA President Mahmoud Abbas, in a speech read by his foreign affairs adviser Nabil Shaath, argued that “payments to support the families are a social responsibility to look after innocent people affected by the incarceration or killing of their loved ones.“It’s quite frankly racist rhetoric to call all our political prisoners terrorists. They are, in effect, the victims of the occupation, not the creators of the occupation,” Abbas said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Driving winds fan Colorado wildfire, 2,000 homes evacuated-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

(Reuters) - Gusting winds and continued dry weather in southwestern Colorado helped to fan a largely uncontrolled wildfire that grew by nearly one-third to more than 22,000 acres on Monday, forcing the evacuation of more than 2,000 homes. The blaze, called the 416 Fire by responders and in its 11th day, is the latest in the 2018 fire season in the western United States. Last year was a near-record year as 10 million acres (4 million hectares) burned across the country, the National Interagency Coordination Center said. The team fighting the blaze said isolated showers were several days away and conditions for the fire spreading were favorable on Monday. Humidity was about 6 percent and winds were expected to gust up to 25 miles per hour (40 km per hour), responders said."Weather conditions remain critical," said the multiagency Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team that is coordinating firefighting efforts. After doubling in size from Saturday to Sunday, the wildfire, 13 miles north of the small city of Durango, grew by another 32 percent to 22,131 acres (8,956 hectares) from Sunday to Monday, the team said. At its current size, the fire is nearly the size of Disney World.A 32-mile (52 km) stretch of U.S. Highway 550, which has served as a buffer for homes on the east side of the fire, was closed on Monday, officials said. All 1.8 million acres (730,000 hectares) of the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado were due to be closed to visitors by Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a statement, citing the fire danger.More than 800 firefighters battled the blaze, which was 10 percent contained, unchanged from Sunday. No buildings have been destroyed so far but the fire was a few hundred yards from homes, with multiple aircraft dropping water and flame retardant, according to Inciweb, an interagency fire report."The terrain is rough and inaccessible in many areas," the report said. The estimated date for containment was June 30, it said.Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), said while winds were down on Monday from the weekend, "It's still a fan on the fire. It won't be until Tuesday before the winds really die down."The NWS has placed large portions of the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona under a red flag warning of extreme fire danger due to the dry conditions.(Reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta, Jonathan Allen in New York and Bernie Woodall in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Editing by Scott Malone, Frances Kerry and Jeffrey Benkoe)

Volcano Kilauea Floods Geothermal Plant, Threatening Hawaii’s Energy Source-[Inverse]-Mary von Aue-YAHOONEWS-June 11, 2018

One of the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency’s biggest fears about Volcano Kilauea has been realized. Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) — Hawaii’s first and only geothermal plant — was flooded by lava, destroying two of its building and shutting down the plant.Fissures had been oozing lava dangerously close to PGV since last month, but Governor David Ige announced that the plant was “sufficiently safe” from the lava that had already claimed dozens of buildings in the nearby Leilani Estates. On Saturday, The Daily Beast reported that the geothermal power plant had finally fallen victim to the lava flows, cutting out an important energy resource for Hawaii.Part of the Puna geothermal plant, before it was destroyed-Owned by Nevada’s Ormat Technologies, PGV contributed nearly 30 percent of Hawaii Island’s electricity, according to the US Department of Energy. Geothermal energy is sourced from the Earth’s natural heat, an ideal resource for an island that can leverage magma bubbles up from a hotspot in the Earth’s crust and transform it into renewable energy. With PGV down, authorities are scrambling to cover the island’s electricity needs. To replace such a large reliance on geothermal power, Hawaii Electric Light has turned to other forms of energy generation, including the use of solar, wind, hydropower, and even fossil fuels. Hawaii was actively pushing to become reliant on 100 percent renewable energy by 2045, but the destruction of PGV is already a setback. As Hawaii Electric Light spokesperson Rhea Lee-Moku told The Daily Beast, “without PGV, Hawaii Island will go from 57 percent renewable to 37 percent renewable.”In the meantime, the US Geological Survey (USGS) headquarters’ computer systems have been down since June 8. The agency announced that it was undergoing system-wide maintenance and would be limited in its ability to produce updates on Kilauea. USGS expects to have that capability restored by Sunday, at which time there may be more updates on more buildings in the volcanic fissures’ paths.PGV created an important resource for Hawaii and the future of reusable energy, but a geothermal plant on an active volcanic rift zone comes with risks. Despite this major setback, there are still geothermal opportunities in Hawaii that scientists will no doubt seek again.

Spain offers to take in migrant ship marooned by Italian politics-Aquarius with 629 people on board, including pregnant women and scores of children, refused port by Italy and Malta-By Lucy Adler and Diego Urdaneta-TOI-JUN 12,18

ROME, Italy (AFP) — Spain offered Monday to take in a ship stranded in the Mediterranean with 629 migrants aboard after Italy and Malta refused to let the vessel dock in their ports. The migrants, including pregnant women and scores of children, were saved by the French charity SOS Mediterranee on Saturday. They were taken on board its ship Aquarius, which is now between Malta and Sicily. But Malta and Italy — whose new populist government has vowed a tough new stance on immigration — have both refused to take the migrants in, triggering concern in the international community about their plight.Spain’s new Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez agreed to allow the ship to dock in its eastern port of Valencia.“The prime minister has given instructions for Spain to honor international commitments on humanitarian crises and announced that the country will receive the ship Aquarius,” his office said in a statement.“It is our obligation to help to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and to offer a safe port to these people.”-‘Swift resolution’-The UN had called on Malta and Italy to immediately allow the boat to dock, describing the situation as “an urgent humanitarian imperative.”It suggested that the hundreds on board “are running out of provisions.”The EU and the bloc’s biggest member state Germany made similar pleas.“The priority of both the Italian and Maltese authorities should be ensuring these people receive the care they need,” European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told reporters, calling for a “swift resolution.”Italy’s refusal to take in the migrants is the first sign of the new government’s hardened stance on immigration. Its far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini showed no sign of backing down on Monday.“Saving lives is a duty, turning Italy into a huge refugee camp is not. Italy is done bending over backwards and obeying, this time THERE IS SOMEONE WHO SAYS NO,” he wrote on Twitter followed by the hashtag #closethedoors. The Maltese government insisted it was “acting in full conformity with its international obligations.”SOS Mediterranee tweeted late Sunday that the Aquarius had received instructions from the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to stand by in its current position 35 nautical miles from Italy and 27 nautical miles from Malta.-‘Vulnerable patients at risk’-“We haven’t moved since last night, people are starting to wonder why we’ve stopped,” journalist Anelise Borges, who is aboard the Aquarius, said in a tweet.MSF Sea (Doctors Without Borders) said the medical situation of those on board was “stable for now but unnecessary delay to disembarkation in safe port puts vulnerable patients at risk.”“Particularly seven pregnant woman, 15 with serious chemical burns and several critical drowning hypothermia patients,” MSF Sea said.Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Sunday that Rome had sent two patrol ships with doctors on board “ready to intervene and ensure the health of anyone on board the Aquarius who might have the need.”The migrants were rescued in six separate nighttime operations in the central Mediterranean on Saturday.“The people we saved yesterday were in a difficult condition, at least 50 were at risk of drowning. We need to have an idea of what port to go to, something that up to now we haven’t had,” Aquarius crew member Alessandro Porro told news channel Sky TG24 on Sunday. The French organization said those brought on board included 123 unaccompanied minors, 11 small children and the seven pregnant women.-‘A land of refuge’-Under EU rules migrants must apply for asylum in the European country where they first arrive. That has put pressure on Italy and Greece, the entry points for hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia since 2015.Some in Italy have offered to take in migrants. The mayor of Taranto, Rinaldo Melucci said the southern port city was “ready to embrace every life in danger.”“Our land has always been one of refuge, I don’t know how you can send away 629 human lives.”Naples mayor Luigi de Magistris said on Twitter that “if a minister without a heart leaves pregnant women, children, old people, human beings to die, the port of Naples is ready to welcome them.”EU leaders in December had set an end-June deadline for an overhaul of rules to create a permanent mechanism to deal with migrants in the event of a new emergency. The summer of 2016 saw a surge in mass drownings in the Mediterranean, at the peak of Europe’s worst migration crisis since World War II.

Toning down rhetoric, Khamenei claims Iran never wanted to throw Jews in sea-Supreme leader says only Egypt's Nasser called for expulsion, while Tehran wants a referendum of descendants of all who lived in Palestine 100 years ago, including Jews-By AP and TOI staff-JUN 12,18

Iran’s supreme leader has sought to clarify his position on Israel after threatening its destruction and now says his country has never expressed genocidal aims against the Jewish people.Earlier this month, a tweet posted on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s official Twitter account said Iran’s “stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken. #Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen.” The account is run by Khamenei’s office and it’s not known if he dictates the tweets himself. But in a series of tweets early Monday, Khamenei said the conflict should be resolved through a popular referendum among those who trace their roots back to before the creation of Israel, including Muslims, Jews and Christians.“To define #Palestine’s destiny, original Palestinians—those who lived in Palestine over 100 years ago, #Muslims, #Jews & #Christians—in/outside occupied territories, will be polled: whatever they decide will happen,” he wrote. That would seem to include the Palestinians as well as the small community of Jews who lived in the Holy Land before the mass immigration of Jews in the 20th century and the creation of Israel in 1948.To define #Palestine’s destiny, original Palestinians—those who lived in Palestine over 100 years ago, #Muslims, #Jews & #Christians—in/outside occupied territories, will be polled: whatever they decide will happen. Is this a bad proposal? Does Europe not want to understand it? pic.twitter.com/mJfdlPJVr5— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) June 10, 2018-Khamenei did not address the fate of the vast majority of Jewish Israelis, who claim historical and biblical roots to the land but whose immediate ancestors arrived in the last century. However, he said Iran had never expressed a desire to “throw the Jews in the sea,” accusing late Egyptian leader Gammel Abdel Nasser of seeking the watery genocide instead.“The Islamic Republic has never said anything like that since its inception,” he tweeted. The Islamic Republic plays rationally in all issues. On the issue of the Zionist regime, Gamal Abdel Nasser would say 'we will throw the Jews in the sea'. The Islamic Republic has never said anything like that since its inception.— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) June 10, 2018-Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials have relentlessly encouraged the destruction of Israel, and Iran finances, arms and trains terror groups on Israel’s borders. Officials occasionally clarify that Iran would only attack Israel in “self-defense” and bears no hostility toward Jews as a religious community.Khamenei also chided Europe for listening to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s warnings about Iran’s aims during a recent trip to Europe. During the trip to Germany, France and the UK, Netanyahu discussed the need to end the nuclear deal with Iran and support pushing Iranian forces out of southern Syria. The children-killer PM of Zionist regime–the Shimr of the time– visits Europe to play the victim, claiming, '#Iran wants to eliminate our population of a few millions.' European audience listens, nods& refuses to say, 'you [Zionist regime] are committing crimes in Gaza & Quds.'— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) June 10, 2018-On Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that Israel “can never” feel safe, as many thousands of Iranians marched in an annual day of protest against Israel.Khamenei has previously branded Israel as “barbaric,” “infanticidal,” and the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region.” More recently, he blamed “Zionists” for the anti-government demonstrations held across Iran earlier this year.Netanyahu was asked last week about Khamenei’s threat at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.“Iran calls for our destruction, but it’s also seeking nuclear weapons to carry out its genocidal design,” said Netanyahu, who was visiting Europe to press for the further dismantling of the Iranian nuclear deal after the US pulled out.Merkel also condemned the tweet, while insisting the nuclear agreement was the best way to keep Iran from developing atomic weapons.Khamenei, in his remarks on Sunday, also called Netanyahu a “criminal” who had “lied” to European leaders by saying that Iran wanted to annihilate Jews.Iran is home to the largest Jewish community in the Middle East outside of Israel, and has a number of synagogues and popular shrines. The Jewish community has a representative in Iran’s parliament.Iran had between 80,000 and 100,000 Jews before the 1979 Islamic Revolution but most have since fled, mainly to the United States, Israel and Europe. There are now only about 8,500 left, mostly in Tehran but also in Isfahan and Shiraz, major cities south of the capital.

Pompeo says North Korea will get ‘unique’ security guarantees-US secretary of state says preparatory talks going faster than expected, shares Trump's optimism about Singapore summit-By Agencies and TOI staff-JUN 10,18

The United States is willing to offer North Korea “unique” security guarantees if it embarks on “complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday. On the eve of a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, Pompeo sounded an upbeat tone, saying that preparatory talks were advancing more quickly than expected.Stating that the US would not again be duped by North Korea, Pompeo said the Trump administration would only accept complete denuclearization. In return, he said, “we will take actions to provide them sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable that denuclearization is not something that ends badly for them,” Pompeo said.“Just the opposite: that it leads to a brighter and better future for the North Korean people.”Pompeo said these guarantees would be “different and unique” from what the US has been willing to provide before.“I’m very optimistic we will have a successful outcome with the two leaders,” he said.“There are only two people that can make decisions of this magnitude. Those two people will sit in a room tomorrow.”Earlier Monday, Trump similarly expressed optimism during a working lunch with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and aides to both leaders.Trump said, “We’ve got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely.” He also told Lee the decision to hold the summit in the island city-state of Singapore was “made very consciously” and offered his gratitude.Kim met with Lee on Sunday.Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session. The US president has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty. China and South Korea would have to sign off on any legal treaty.Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore hours apart Sunday. Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt “very good” before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers. Trump traveled to Singapore from Canada, where he attended a meeting with other world leaders.A jet carrying Kim landed hours earlier. After shaking hands with Singapore’s foreign minister, Kim sped through the streets in a limousine, two large North Korean flags fluttering on the hood, surrounded by other black vehicles with tinted windows and bound for the luxurious and closely guarded St. Regis Hotel.

Woman, 18, severely wounded in apparent terror stabbing in north-Police arrest alleged attacker, a Palestinian man, after shooting him in the leg; victim taken to hospital in Afula-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-JUN 12,18

An 18-year-old woman was stabbed and seriously wounded in the northern city of Afula on Monday in an apparent terror attack, authorities said.Police arrested her suspected attacker, who had fled the scene, after a brief manhunt. The suspect was identified by police as a Palestinian man in his 20s from the northern West Bank city of Jenin.“Police shot the suspect in the leg after calling upon him to stop,” a police spokesperson said. “The suspect was arrested with a knife in his possession.”Police said they were still investigating the motive for the stabbing, but were working under the assumption that it was a terror attack.“The main line of investigation is that this was a terror attack, however the investigation is continuing in order to rule out other motives,” the police spokesperson said.Later in the day, Hebrew media reported police were closer to determining the attack was nationalistically motivated. The Palestinian suspect, reportedly from the West Bank city of Jenin, was in Israel without a permit, police said.Videos of the suspected terrorist’s arrest were quickly posted to social media by bystanders. The victim was identified as Shuva Malka, an 18-year-old resident of Migdal Ha’emek. She was stabbed shortly before noon on the street and collapsed outside a local coffee shop, police said.“When we arrived at the scene, it was very chaotic. There was an 18-year-old girl sitting on a chair at the entrance to a store. She was conscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper body,” one of the medics who treated her said. She was taken to the nearby HaEmek Medical Center in serious condition, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.Hospital officials said that her condition had stabilized but remained serious.

Vatican-backed family rally to have workshop welcoming gays-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 12, 2018

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Catholic Church's upcoming big family rally in Ireland will feature workshops on hot-button issues facing Catholic families, including priestly sexual abuse, weathering divorce and ministering to lesbian and gay faithful.Pope Francis will join the rally for the final two days, Aug. 25-26, presiding over the final Mass in Dublin.Organizers on Monday unveiled the pastoral program leading up to Francis' arrival, and it includes some surprising entries. Perhaps none is more surprising than the inclusion of the Rev. James Martin, who will deliver a presentation on welcoming LGBT Catholics and their families into parishes.Martin has had several talks canceled in the U.S. in recent months because of pressure from conservative groups opposed to his call for the church to better accompany gay Catholics.

UK's Prince William to meet Netanyahu, Abbas on landmark Middle East trip-[Reuters]-By Michael Holden-YAHOONEWS-June 12, 2018

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince William will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas when he makes a landmark trip to the region later this month, his office said on Monday.William, Queen Elizabeth's grandson and second-in-line to the British throne, is the first senior British royal to pay an official visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories. While the trip is at the behest of the British government, the prince's Communications Secretary Jason Knauf said such a visit had been discussed for years."Now is the appropriate time and the Duke of Cambridge is the right person to make this visit," Knauf told reporters, referring to William by his official title. He said the prince was looking forward to building "a real and enduring relationship with the people of the region"."The non-political nature of his royal highness's role - in common with all royal visits overseas - allows a spotlight to be brought to bear on the people of the region," Knauf said.Britain regards Israel as a close and important ally but the visit comes at a time when the two countries have been at odds over a number of major issues recently.British Prime Minister Theresa May told Netanyahu ahead of a meeting in London last week that Britain was concerned at Palestinian deaths in clashes in the Gaza Strip.More than 120 Palestinians have been killed since protests at the Gaza border began on March 30, including 60 people killed in one day in May.Israel has also lauded U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, both moves with which Britain disagrees.Knauf said William would meet Netanyahu at the prime minister's residence before seeing Abbas at his office in Ramallah the following day. Both leaders have previously welcomed the visit. He will be making the trip alone as his wife Kate will remain in Britain to look after their third child Prince Louis who was born in April. However, he will be accompanied by his senior adviser, David Manning, a former British ambassador to Israel.During the four-day tour, the prince will also go with Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis to Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust, and will also view Jerusalem's Old City from the Mount of Olives. He will also visit the Church of St Mary Magdalene, and pay his respects at the tomb of his great-grandmother Princess Alice, which is located in the Garden of Gethsemane which his father Prince Charles and grandfather Prince Philip have both visited before during private trips.William will begin the trip in Jordan, where his wife lived for two years as a young child, paying a visit to the archaeological site of Jerash where Kate was pictured in family photos released at the time of their 2011 marriage.(Reporting by Michael Holden; Editing by Estelle Shirbon and Matthew Mpoke Bigg)
