White House livid over op-ed by unnamed insider; Trump questions if ‘treasonous’-In blistering statement, US press secretary says ‘coward’ who penned article claiming senior staff are working against president should resign-By Agencies-TOI-SEP 5,18
US President Donald Trump responded with a one-word tweet Wednesday to a damning New York Times op-ed on his presidency by asking if the anonymous piece by a senior official could be treasonous.“TREASON?” Trump tweeted, in response to the piece entitled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” and claiming US the president’s own staff see him as a danger to the nation.Trump said it was a “gutless editorial” and “really a disgrace,” and his press secretary called on the official to resign. The writer, claiming to be part of the “resistance” to Trump but not from the left, said, “Many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.” The newspaper described the author of the column only as a senior official in the Trump administration.TREASON?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 5, 2018-“It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room,” the author continued. “We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Donald Trump won’t.”A defiant Trump, appearing at an unrelated event at the White House, lashed out at the Times for publishing the op-ed.“They don’t like Donald Trump and I don’t like them,” he said of the newspaper. The op-ed pages of the newspaper are managed separately from its news department. The essay immediately triggered a wild guessing game as to the author’s identity on social media, in newsrooms and inside the West Wing, where officials were blindsided by its publication. And in a blistering statement, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders accused the author of choosing to “deceive” the president by remaining in the administration.“He is not putting country first, but putting himself and his ego ahead of the will of the American people,” she said. “The coward should do the right thing and resign.”Sanders also called on the Times to “issue an apology” for publishing the piece, calling it a “pathetic, reckless, and selfish op-ed.”A “House of Cards”-style plot twist in an already over-the-top administration, Trump allies and political insiders scrambled late Wednesday to unmask the writer. The text was pulled apart for clues: The writer is identified as an “administration official”; does that mean a person who works outside the White House? The references to Russia and the late Sen. John McCain — do they suggest someone working in national security? Does the writing style sound like someone who worked at a think tank? In a tweet, the Times used the pronoun “he” to refer to the writer; does that rule out all women? The newspaper later said the tweet referring to “he” had been “drafted by someone who is not aware of the author’s identity, including the gender, so the use of ‘he’ was an error.”Hotly debated on Twitter was the author’s use of the word “lodestar,” which pops up frequently in speeches by Vice President Mike Pence. Could the anonymous figure be someone in Pence’s orbit? Others argued that the word “lodestar” could have been included to throw people off. There is a certain high-ranking Trump official who likes using the phrase “lodestar.” His name is Mike Pence. pic.twitter.com/ebItJDBc8F— Matt Viser (@mviser) September 5, 2018-Showing her trademark ability to attract attention, former administration official Omarosa Manigault Newman tweeted that clues about the writer’s identity were in her recently released tell-all book, offering a page number: 330. The reality star writes on that page: “many in this silent army are in his party, his administration, and even in his own family.”Anonymous senior official in NYT piece: 1-Russia hawk 2-Traditional Republican 3-Respects McCain 4-Not Middle East buff 5-Writes well 6-Senior to take risk 7-Not a longtime bureaucrat 8-Someone who uses lodestar to perhaps throw people off 9-Connected within admin 10-Likely in WH— Joyce Karam (@Joyce_Karam) September 5, 2018-The anonymous author wrote in the Times that where Trump has had successes, they have come “despite — not because of — the president’s leadership style, which is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.”The assertions in the column were largely in line with complaints about Trump’s behavior that have repeatedly been raised by various administration officials, often speaking on condition of anonymity. And they were published a day after the release of details from an explosive new book by longtime journalist Bob Woodward that laid bare concerns among the highest echelon of Trump aides about the president’s judgment. The writer of the Times op-ed said Trump aides are aware of the president’s faults and “many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations. I would know. I am one of them.”The writer also alleged “there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment” because of the “instability” witnessed in the president. The 25th Amendment allows the vice president to take over if the commander in chief is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” It requires that the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet back relieving the president. The writer added: “This isn’t the work of the so-called deep state. It’s the work of the steady state.”
Paraguay reverses Jerusalem embassy move; fuming Israel shuts AsunciĆ³n mission-Netanyahu says ties will be ‘clouded’ by decision to return embassy to Tel Aviv; Palestinians say they brokered agreement with new Paraguay president last month-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-5 September 2018
Less than four months after Paraguay ceremoniously opened its new embassy in Jerusalem, the South American country said Wednesday it would return it to its original location in Tel Aviv, sparking Israeli anger over the surprise decision. The move is a major blow to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s drive for international recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; Paraguay was one of two countries to move its embassy following the US decision to recognize the city as the capital and move its own embassy in May.In response to the reversal, Israel angrily announced that it was closing its embassy in Paraguay, saying AsunciĆ³n’s decision cast a cloud over bilateral relations.“Paraguay wants to contribute to an intensification of regional diplomatic efforts to achieve a broad, fair and lasting peace in the Middle East,” the country’s new Foreign Minister Luis Alberto Castiglioni told reporters in explaining his country’s sudden about-face.The issue of Jerusalem is one of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict’s “most complex components,” the Foreign Ministry in Asuncion said in a statement. In this context, “Paraguay considers that it has to be addressed through negotiations by the concerned parties, within the framework of the relevant international organizations decisions.”The government considers it “appropriate to re-establish the headquarters” of its Israel embassy in its previous location,” the statement went on. “This measure is adopted in the meantime a broader approach to the subject can be achieved [sic].”Netanyahu angrily denounced the decision, which he said would reverberate through the countries’ relationship.“Israel views with utmost gravity the extraordinary decision by Paraguay, which will cloud bilateral relations,” he said in a statement. He instructed Israel’s embassy in AsunciĆ³n to close immediately and recalled ambassador Ze’ev Harel. The embassy in AsunciĆ³n had just reopened two years ago, after it had been shut in 2002 due to what the government said were budgetary constraints.Deputy Minister Michael Oren also denounced Paraguay’s move, saying it will “certainly harm our bilateral relations” and may also negatively impact Asuncion’s relations with Washington.“The world appreciates countries that stand firm behind bold decisions and not countries that change their mind after a few months,” he said. The Palestinians celebrated Paraguay’s reversal.“We express our deep gratitude to Paraguay and the Paraguayan leadership for its wise decision to withdraw its embassy from the occupied city of Jerusalem which comes in respect to the rights of the Palestinian people,” Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah said. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said Paraguay had pledged two weeks ago to return the embassy to Tel Aviv during a visit by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki to the country for the inauguration of new President Mario Abdo BenĆtez.Maliki “expresses his appreciation and gratitude to the Paraguayan president and his foreign minister for moving the embassy back and for their commitment to international law,” the ministry said in a statement.BenĆtez had already been elected when then-president Horacio Cartes made the decision to move the embassy in May and was not consulted, which made the decision somewhat controversial in Paraguay. On May 21, Cartes joined Netanyahu in a ceremony celebrating the opening of the country’s new embassy in Jerusalem’s Malha Technological Park.“A great day for Israel; a great day for Paraguay — a great day for our friendship,” Netanyahu said at the time. “We have no better friends than you. Thank you, Horacio. Thank you, Paraguay.”Cartes called the embassy opening a “historic event,” adding that this occasion “is of special significance because it expresses the sincere friendship and brave solidarity between Paraguay and Israel.”The new government’s decision to return its embassy to Tel Aviv follows the recent decision of Colombia to recognize a Palestinian state, much to Israel’s chagrin. (Paraguay formally recognized a Palestinian state in 2011.) Once Paraguay closes its Jerusalem embassy, only two countries will have their embassies in the capital: the US and Guatemala.Until 2012, Paraguay’s embassy was located in the Jerusalem suburb of Mevasseret Zion, until it was closed after Israel shut its mission in AsunciĆ³n due to what the Foreign Ministry at the time called “budgetary constraints.”In July 2013, president-elect Cartes announced the country would reopen its embassy in Israel, this time in Tel Aviv. Three years later, Israel reopened its AsunciĆ³n mission. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Cheering Jerusalem reversal, Palestinians say they will open Paraguay embassy-Abbas praises AsunciĆ³n’s decision to return mission to Tel Aviv; South American country says Israel should not be annoyed by about-face-By Raphael Ahren and TOI staff-5 September 2018
The Palestinian Authority will “immediately” open an embassy in Paraguay, Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said Wednesday, as Ramallah feted the country’s decision to move its Israeli embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv.Malki said the surprise announcement by AsunciĆ³n earlier Wednesday was the result of his lobbying push to reverse the Jerusalem embassy move two weeks ago, and PA president Mahmoud Abbas celebrated the move as “courageous.”“This courageous move by the Paraguay government is an example for all countries in facing Israeli greed and attempts by the American administration to impose it on the world when it moved its embassy to Jerusalem in the so-called deal of the century,” he said.Responding to Paraguay’s about-face, which came only four months after the embassy moved from Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the closure of Israel’s embassy in the country and warned that ties between the allies would be clouded. But Malki said the Palestinians would replace it with an embassy of their own, solidifying ties between Ramallah and AsunciĆ³n, which has already recognized a Palestinian state, the official Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.Abbas said Paraguay’s move “was the result of the wise and vigorous Palestinian diplomatic efforts to explain the dangers of the transfer of embassies to Jerusalem.”According to the Wafa report, Malki had threatened AsunciĆ³n that he would take them to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, as they plan on doing to the US and Guatemala, which also moved their embassies to Jerusalem.Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat also applauded the move, while urging Guatemala to follow suit.“We also call upon the government of Guatemala to stand on the right side of history and move its embassy outside Jerusalem,” said Erekat in a statement.“This is also time for the Trump administration to realize that no peace-loving country will follow their decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Only respecting international law and UN resolutions will help to achieve a just and lasting peace,” he added.Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah also thanked Paraguay for its decision-“We express our deep gratitude to Paraguay and the Paraguayan leadership for its wise decision to withdraw its embassy from the occupied city of Jerusalem which comes in respect to the rights of the Palestinian people international law UN resolutions,” his office said in a statement.Paraguay’s decision came as a major blow to Netanyahu’s drive for international recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; Paraguay was one of two countries to move its embassy following the US decision to recognize the city as the capital and move its own embassy in May.In a Foreign Ministry document on plans for 2019 leaked to the Haaretz daily, the Paraguay move was listed as a success that Israel’s foreign service would be able to build upon.In response to the reversal, Israel angrily announced that it was closing its embassy in Paraguay and recalled ambassador Ze’ev Harel, saying AsunciĆ³n’s decision cast a shadow over bilateral relations.“Israel views with utmost gravity the extraordinary decision by Paraguay, which will cloud bilateral relations,” Netanyahu said in a statement.“Paraguay wants to contribute to an intensification of regional diplomatic efforts to achieve a broad, fair and lasting peace in the Middle East,” the country’s new Foreign Minister Luis Alberto Castiglioni told reporters in explaining his country’s sudden about-face.He pointed to a long history of positive relations with Israel.“I don’t think this should annoy our Israeli brothers and friends,” said Paraguay’s Castiglioni.“There are more than 85 countries that have kept their embassies in Tel Aviv and we’re historic allies of Israel.“Don’t forget that Paraguay’s vote was the decisive vote in the creation of Israel.”In line with most of Latin America, Paraguay was one of the 33 countries that voted in favor — compared to just 13 against and 10 abstentions — of the 1947 United Nations two-state partition plan for what was until then British Mandate Palestine. The decision to move the embassy had been made under previous president Horacio Cartes, and then-president-elect Mario Abdo BenĆtez was not consulted.Castiglioni said Paraguay had always been “predictable in its international relations” but that Cartes’s move was “a distortion of this tradition and culture of respect for international law” and UN decrees. The Israeli embassy in AsunciĆ³n had just reopened two years ago, after it had been shut in 2002 due to what the government said were budgetary constraints. The new government’s decision to return its embassy to Tel Aviv follows the recent decision of Colombia to recognize a Palestinian state, much to Israel’s chagrin.Once Paraguay closes its Jerusalem embassy, only two countries will have their embassies in the capital: the US and Guatemala.Until 2012, Paraguay’s embassy was located in the Jerusalem suburb of Mevasseret Zion, until it was closed after Israel shut its mission in AsunciĆ³n due to what the Foreign Ministry at the time called “budgetary constraints.”In July 2013, president-elect Cartes announced the country would reopen its embassy in Israel, this time in Tel Aviv. President: Nation-state law ‘bad for Israel and bad for the Jews’-Reuven Rivlin says controversial legislation part of a global trend of deepening polarization, silencing of dissent-By TOI staff-SEPT 6,18
President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday decried the recently passed so-called Jewish nation-state law as “bad for the State of Israel and bad for the Jews” and described the controversial legislation as part of a global pivot toward the silencing of dissent.“I think that the nation-state law in its current version is bad for the State of Israel and bad for the Jews,” said Rivlin at a book launch event, according to Hebrew reports. He lambasted the law — which enshrines Israel’s status as a Jewish state in its semi-constitutional Basic Laws — as part of a trend of deepening polarization in both Israeli society and the world.“This law is part of a broader trend, a global one perhaps, that seeks to silence the debate,” said Rivlin. “[It] strives for a reality in which there are two options: Either you are with me, or you are against me. Either you are with me, or you are a traitor, an enemy. [This holds] whether you are a leftist, or whether you are the president.”Though the presidency is mostly a ceremonial role, Rivlin has not refrained from issuing withering criticism of the nation-state law passed by the Knesset in July, which critics have argued poses a threat to the rights of Israel’s minority communities. On Monday, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit countered that claim, saying the law does not violate minority rights because it does not override Israel’s previous semi-constitutional Basic Laws that guarantee them equality.Speaking at a conference in Jerusalem, Mandelblit said that the law “does not harm their rights, because it is on an equal (legal) footing to their basic constitutional rights.”Multiple petitions against the law have already been filed with the High Court of Justice by Druze, Arab and Bedouin leaders, rights groups, academics, and the Meretz and Joint List political parties. Several more petitions are currently being drafted.Petitioners argued that the law contravenes the basis of Israel’s legal system as well as its Declaration of Independence by enshrining inequality among its citizens. But Mandelblit said it did not override previously granted rights. “The new Basic Law is on the same normative level as previous Basic Laws,” he said, referring to the quasi-constitutional legislation. This lines up with the argument of the Netanyahu government, which says the new law merely enshrines the country’s existing character, and that Israel’s democratic nature and provisions for equality are already anchored in existing legislation. The most recent petition filed last month by a group of 24 Druze citizens led by Daliyat al-Karmel Mayor Rafik Halabi appealed to the court to abolish the controversial legislation, saying it “creates race-based discrimination, excluding 20 percent of the nation’s citizenry and creating castes among Israeli citizens.”The nation-state law passed by the Knesset in July enshrines Israel as “the national home of the Jewish people” and says “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.” It also defines Arabic as a language with a “special” status, effectively downgrading it from its de facto status as Israel’s second official language, though it cryptically stipulates that “this clause does not harm the status given to the Arabic language before this law came into effect.” Read the full text of the law here. Its passage into the law books has elicited a hail of criticism by Israelis, Jewish leaders, and the international community. It has prompted particular outrage from Israel’s Druze minority, whose members — many of which serve in the Israeli army — say the law’s provisions render them second-class citizens.Earlier this month, 30,000 Israeli Arabs and Jews demonstrated against the legislation in Tel Aviv. An earlier, similar rally of the Druze community drew around 50,000 people.Netanyahu has said a government team will review ways to strengthen the state’s ties to minorities, but has stressed he opposes altering the controversial legislation.

US denies report Trump offered to meet Abbas-National Security Council says it wants to work with PA to ‘advance our mutual goal of a better future for the Palestinian people’-By TOI staff-5 September 2018
The United States on Wednesday denied a report that US President Donald Trump had offered to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly later this month. The offer was reported by Hadashot news (formerly known as Channel 2) Tuesday, but in a statement, Garret Marquis, the US National Security Council spokesman, criticized the news station for its “untrue” report.“The Channel 2 report that President Trump requested a meeting with President Abbas is untrue,” he said. “Channel 2 unfortunately continues to publish misleading reports without checking their veracity.”The NSC also criticized Abbas’s response to the report, in which he all but rejected renewed negotiations with the US.“Rather than engage in personal attacks against Jason Greenblatt or other members of the administration, we continue to hope that the Palestinian Authority will engage with the US positively and constructively to advance our mutual goal of a better future for the Palestinian people,” Marquis said in the statement.Hadashot on Wednesday acknowledged the US denial of its report, but reiterated that the overture to Abbas was made, citing World Jewish Congress president Ron Lauder as an indirect intermediary, who it said had spoken recently with Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.According to the original TV report on Tuesday, Trump had been seeking to re-establish ties with the Palestinians, who have blackballed US peace efforts for months and are largely boycotting the administration amid anger over Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. However, Abbas responded that he would only accept such a meeting in return for significant diplomatic gestures that would renew trust between the sides. In addition, he reportedly demanded that Trump fire his Middle East negotiating team, including envoy Jason Greenblatt and the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. In the wake of the US president’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December and the US embassy’s relocation to the capital in May, PA officials have been refusing to meet with members of Trump’s peace team, declaring them unfit to act as honest mediators in negotiations.Washington’s decision to halt all financial aid to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has further infuriated the PA leadership. Abbas’s spokesman has said Washington’s latest decision “promotes terrorism” and is a violation of UN resolutions.Previous US peace plans have included proposals and maps dealing with potential land swaps, security guarantees and other issues, but have left out thornier issues like Jerusalem and the Palestinian demand for refugees and their descendants to return to pre-1967 Israel. It’s not clear if the US plan will address those sticking points. Trump has said in the past that his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital took the issue “off the table.” Some reports have indicated the US may offer Jerusalem suburb Abu Dis as a capital instead of East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians demand be the seat of their future state.
Virtual reality tour brings ancient Jerusalem to life-Visitors will be able to ‘walk the streets’ of the city at the time of King Herod in the first century BCE-By Ilan Ben Zion-5 September 2018-TOI
AP — A Jerusalem museum is breathing life into the ancient city with a new virtual reality tour that allows visitors to experience how archaeologists believe Jerusalem looked 2,000 years ago.The Tower of David Museum, which is housed in the Old City’s ancient stronghold, plans to launch the high-tech guided tour this month ahead of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The virtual reality guide, “Step into History,” offers visitors a chance to “walk in the streets of Jerusalem and enjoy the present and take a look back to the past,” said Tower of David Museum director Eilat Lieber.Working with archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority, Lithodomos VR created 360-degree simulations of how Jerusalem’s citadel, palaces, streets and ancient Jewish Temple are believed to have appeared during its heyday under King Herod in the first century BCE and during the life of Jesus.Herod, a Roman vassal who ruled Judaea from 37-4 BCE, invested heavily in large construction projects across his realm, including a major expansion of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and the fortress and palace where the Tower of David stands today. His monuments, including the mountaintop fortress at Masada and the port city of Caesarea, are among the most visited sites in Israel.“Especially with Jerusalem, I think the biggest challenge was getting it right,” said Simon Young, founder of Lithodomos VR, an Australian startup. “There’s a lot of different opinions about how Jerusalem looked in the ancient world… Of course, we want to do justice to Jerusalem and to make it as accurate as possible.”Lithodomos VR’s team of archaeologists and artists has produced similar projects in London, Rome, Athens and other cities. The Tower of David Museum also houses an innovation lab in a chamber at the top of a Herodian-era keep that once served as the chambers of Jerusalem’s Ottoman governor. The lab, launched in October 2017, hosts startups such as Lithodomos VR that are developing technologies to enhance visitor experience, with a particular emphasis on virtual and enhanced reality. The site also holds an elaborate light show that projects moving images in intricate detail on the ancient walls of the Old City.Accompanied by a guide, visitors will be able explore nine vantage points in the city, starting at the citadel — an Ottoman-era fortress built atop remnants of several earlier bastions — then meandering through the Old City’s Jewish Quarter down toward the remains of the Second Jewish Temple. In order to keep from crashing into modern Jerusalem, visitors carry the goggles between sites, then put them on once they are stationary. At each point, a narrator explains the historical significance of the structures they can see in the goggles: the columned marketplace of the Cardo, the heart of the ancient city; the soaring towers of Herod’s citadel; the opulent pools of his pleasure palace; and the Temple. The VR tour around the Old City takes approximately two hours, the museum said. The tour is confined to the Old City’s Jewish Quarter. The Old City lies in East Jerusalem — an area captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War and claimed by the Palestinians as their future capital. Israel rejects any division of the Old City — home to Jerusalem’s most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites.Young says the Lithodomos VR team would be interested in adding additional historical layers to the virtual reality guide that would allow people to explore Jerusalem during other periods, such as the Crusades.Judy Magnusson, an Australian tourist who previewed the tour on Monday ahead of its launch, said the virtual reality-enhanced experience “brings history to life” and makes the stories about the city “more real.”
Mahane Yehuda graffiti artist tackles Rosh Hashanah themes-Solomon Souza, in his new role as artist-in-residence for The Israel Innovation Fund, puts pomegranates and grapes at the center of his New Year series-By Jessica Steinberg-TOI-5 September 2018
There’s a cornucopia of ruby red pomegranates, purple grapes and arched windows in Solomon Souza’s series of Rosh Hashanah images, created by the self-taught artist for The Israel Innovation Fund, the organization that creates cultural programs to showcase Israeli life.Souza, best known for his spray-painted images of famous Israelis and Jews vividly splayed on the shutters of Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market, has turned to other iconic images in this series, in keeping with the themes of the holiday celebrating the Jewish New Year. The paintings and prints are on sale as part of the fund’s The Hebrew Wallpaper Project, which aims to connect Israeli artists with new audiences worldwide. The fund created an artist-in-residence program in which it supports an artist and provides a living wage, materials and studio expenses to artists with proven success in Israel. Souza is their first artist-in-residence.“I can make whatever I want,” said Souza, “and the idea is to make works that are relevant to this time of year.”The Rosh Hashana series is all spray-painted, a fitting medium for Souza right now, as “with each release of the spray can, I can release pressure from myself,” said Souza, who is currently between apartments and feeling pressure about his living situation.Souza said he is currently staying in Safed where his mother lives, surrounded by mountains and trees, and “all those elements and symbols of the season,” he said. “I don’t know why I’m living in Tel Aviv when I could have this.”His plan is to produce around ten pieces for the Rosh Hashana series, and several more as Yom Kippur approaches on September 19.He began the series while still living in Jaffa and points to the flash of ancient stonework alongside the push for modernity and graffiti and new construction.“I’m not Israeli-born but this is who I am now, this is my identity,” said Souza, who was born in England. “These pieces, every piece of art is a way for me to express myself and everything that’s around me.”The long, narrow green painting draws from the branches of pomegranate trees.“There are 613 seeds in a pomegranate, but they have to grow first, they don’t start out with 613, it’s a process of growth,” he said. “If you want to make any progress, you have to grow.”The project is part of Souza’s work for the fund as their artist in residence, a position they offered him in May, and with the aim of showcasing Israeli culture. The fund’s CEO, Adam Scott Bellos, first came across Souza’s work on a finished canvas, as it was carried by a client through the streets of Jerusalem after she’d purchased it.Souza became known locally through his Mahane Yehuda gallery, an ambitious project that isn’t yet complete, as Souza still has a couple of hundred more shutters to paint. In the meantime, Souza has been touring through the US and Australia, where he was commissioned to paint large-scale paintings for Jewish schools and other community centers. His largest painting to date was 120 square meters long.Just to compare, his average Mahane Yehuda shutter is about five to six square meters in size. All the paintings created for the fund are for sale, and are available as prints on canvas.“It’s pretty amazing for me,” said Souza. “The fund wanted to do this and I’m their guinea pig.”There are three sizes for each available Souza print and they retail for $100, $500, and $1,000. “Crowning of the Year,” the tall and narrow piece, is 24×46, 30×60 and 52×100. The wider piece is available in 43×24, 55×30 and 100×55.The signed prints on canvas are available via inquiry to info@tiif.org.

Iran says it will go beyond previous enrichment if nuclear deal fails-Spokesperson for atomic agency says Tehran’s program ‘considerably more advanced’ than when 2015 accord was signed-By AFP-TOI-SEP 5,18
Iran will begin uranium enrichment beyond previous levels if the remaining parties fail to uphold the 2015 nuclear deal, its Atomic Energy Organization told local media on Wednesday.“We will not return to previous levels if our counterparts leave the JCPOA (nuclear deal), but will instead reach even more advanced levels,” the organization’s spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said, quoted by state broadcaster IRIB.“We are at a considerably more advanced status than when we signed the deal. The country is moving ahead in nuclear activities at a favorable pace,” he added.Iran has repeatedly said it will resume high-level uranium enrichment if the 2015 agreement — which limits its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief — falls apart.Following the withdrawal of the United States in May, the other parties — Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the EU — have vowed to provide Iran with enough economic benefits to keep the agreement alive. But Tehran is increasingly skeptical that those countries can counter the effects of renewed US sanctions, which have already battered Iran’s economy.Last week, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran should be ready to “set aside” the agreement if it is no longer in the country’s national interests. The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly stated that Iran is sticking to its commitments. The administration of US President Donald Trump says the deal did not prevent Iran from eventually working towards a nuclear weapon — which Tehran has denied it is seeking.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Landslides after powerful quake hits Japan's Hokkaido-[AFP]-Hiroshi HIYAMA, Miwa SUZUKI-YAHOONEWS-September 5, 2018
Tokyo (AFP) - A powerful 6.6-magnitude quake rocked the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido Thursday, triggering landslides, collapsing buildings, and killing at least two people with several dozen missing.Multiple, large-scale landslides struck the sparsely populated countryside, which was also hit by the edge of a powerful typhoon that surged through Japan earlier this week.Aerial views showed dozens of houses destroyed at the bottom of a hill that was engulfed by a landslide, with a rescue helicopter winching a resident to safety.Around three million homes lost power after the quake damaged a major thermal plant supplying the region. The Tomari nuclear power plant in Hokkaido, which was not operational before the quake, was forced to turn to emergency back-up power to keep its cooling system working, NHK said.Kazuo Kibayashi, 51, a town official at hard-hit Abira town, told AFP: "There was a sudden, extreme jolt. I felt it went sideways, not up-and-down, for about two to three minutes.""It stopped before shaking started again. I felt it come in two waves. I am 51, and I have never experienced anything like this. I thought my house was going to collapse. Everything inside my house was all jumbled up. I didn't have time to even start cleaning," he added.Akira Fukui, from the main city of Sapporo, told AFP: "I woke up around 3am with a vertical jolt. I put the light on but it went out shortly afterwards. All the traffic lights are out and there's no power at work."After the initial quake, an aftershock measuring 5.3 rocked the area moments later and dozens more aftershocks followed throughout the night and into the morning. No tsunami warning was issued after the relatively shallow quake, which struck 62 kilometres (39 miles) southeast of the regional capital Sapporo.Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said 4,000 of Japan's Self-Defence Forces had been dispatched to help with recovery efforts, with around 20,000 more expected to join. "We will do our best to save lives," said Abe after an emergency cabinet meeting.Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said two people had been killed, with local media reported around 40 were missing.Local media said the dead included an 82-year-old man who fell down the stairs at his home during the quake and that around 130 people had sustained minor injuries.Japan is still recovering from the worst typhoon to hit the country in 25 years, which struck the western part of the country on Tuesday, claiming at least 11 lives and causing major damage to the region's main airport.- 'Ring of fire' -"The government will work together towards reconstruction while giving the top priority to saving human lives," Abe told reporters.Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga urged residents to listen out for updates on TV and radio, as officials warned of the risk of further quakes."Large quakes often occur, especially within two to three days (of a big one)," said Toshiyuki Matsumori, in charge of monitoring earthquakes and tsunamis at the meteorological agency. He added the risk of housing collapses and landslides had increased in the area hit by the quake, saying: "We urge residents to pay full attention to seismic activity and rainfall and not to go into dangerous areas."The earthquake also caused travel disruption, with all flights cancelled from Sapporo's main Chitose airport and bullet train services halted. The national meteorological agency warned that more bad weather could be on the way for Hokkaido and urged people to be vigilant for landslides, high tides and heavy rain.Japan sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where many of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded. In June, a deadly tremor rocked the Osaka region, killing five people and injuring over 350.On March 11, 2011, a devastating 9.0-magnitude quake struck under the Pacific Ocean, and the resulting tsunami caused widespread damage and claimed thousands of lives.
Fast-growing Northern California wildfire forces evacuations-[Reuters]-By Alex Dobuzinskis-YAHOONEWS-September 5, 2018
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A wildfire erupted in forest land in Northern California on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes and the closure of a stretch of an interstate highway near where a deadly blaze broke out in July, officials said. The Delta Fire was burning in timber and brush in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in a canyon along the Sacramento River. It was near the site of the Carr Fire, which led to eight deaths and destroyed hundreds of homes in the city of Redding and nearby areas.Wildfires in California have scorched far more ground this year than in 2017, one of the most destructive in the state's history. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has responded to 4,587 fires that have destroyed 613,710 acres (248,359 hectares), compared with 4,425 fires that destroyed 233,936 acres (94,671 hectares) through the same period in 2017, according to figures from the agency-The latest fire spread to 2,000 acres (809 hectares) by Wednesday evening, forcing the Shasta County Sheriff's Office to evacuate residents along a stretch of Interstate 5 north of the town of Lakehead to the Siskiyou County line, according to the government wildfire tracking website Inciweb."It's not in the middle of a town, but there are some rural residences" in the area, Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokeswoman Carol Underhill said.A representative from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office could no immediately be reached for comment. The Delta Fire was burning on both sides of Interstate 5, which has made it more difficult to control the flames, Underhill said. The highway has been closed in both directions in that area.Firefighters have not been able to build any containment lines against the fast-moving blaze, officials with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest said on Twitter.Photos posted online by the U.S. Forest Service showed bright orange flames in a forest just beyond a truck on a highway, and broad columns of white smoke rising above forests. The fire broke out at mid-day on Wednesday near an exit from Interstate 5, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Redding. Its cause was under investigation.(Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Bill Tarrant and Peter Cooney)
Gordon weakens, Hurricane Florence gains strength on path toward Bermuda-[Reuters]-By Kathy Finn-YAHOONEWS-September 5, 2018
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Gordon weakened into a depression on Wednesday but was dumping heavy rains that threatened to cause floods across several southern U.S. states while Hurricane Florence strengthened to a Category 4 storm and could menace Bermuda.Gordon made landfall on Tuesday night near the Alabama-Mississippi border with near hurricane-force winds, the National Hurricane Center said. But by Wednesday afternoon its center was well inland, dumping heavy rains and causing flooding in western Florida and coastal Alabama. Property damage was minimal, the NHC said.A 2-year-old girl died when a tree fell on a mobile home in Pensacola, Florida, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said.Gordon continued to weaken over central Mississippi and by 4 p.m. CDT (2100 GMT) was about 45 miles (75 km) northwest of Jackson with maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour (45 km per hour), the Weather Prediction Center said. The threat of heavy rains and flooding will continue for several days in the Mississippi Valley, forecasters said.Energy companies and port operators along the Gulf Coast took steps to resume normal operations after Gordon shut 9 percent of the region's oil and natural gas production.Oil prices fell about 1 percent on Wednesday, after fears about the storm eased.-TRACKING TOWARD BERMUDA-In the Atlantic Ocean, the NHC on Wednesday upgraded Hurricane Florence to a Category 4 storm on a five-step scale with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (210 kph). The first major hurricane of the Atlantic season will affect Bermuda's surf by Friday, but it was too early to say whether it would hit land. "Swells from Florence could also reach the U.S. East Coast by early next week," the NHC said.Florence was 1,295 miles (2,080 km) east-southeast of Bermuda on Wednesday afternoon. Some weakening is forecast during the next couple of days, "but Florence is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through early next week," the NHC said.(Reporting by Kathy Finn; Additional reporting by Gina Cherelus in New York, Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee, Bernie Woodall in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles; Editing by Bill Tarrant and Lisa Shumaker)

Shells hit Syria's Idlib as rebels brace for assault-[Reuters]-By Angus McDowall-YAHOONEWS-September 5, 2018
BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian military shelled the last stronghold of active rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday as a war monitor said insurgents blew up another bridge in anticipation of a government offensive.Damascus, backed by allies Russia and Iran, has been preparing an assault to recover Idlib and adjacent areas of the northwest, and resumed air strikes along with Russia on Tuesday after weeks of lull.Idlib's fate now appears likely to rest on the results of Friday's Tehran summit between the leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran - a meeting that Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov on Wednesday said would make the situation "clearer".Russia's Defence Ministry said Tuesday's air strikes had only targeted militants and not struck populated areas. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said they had killed 13 civilians, including children, but no fighters. The ministry said it had targeted buildings used to store weapons and explosives including a facility used to assemble explosive-packed drones that rebels have used to attack Russian planes stationed at Hmeymim air base.Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that pro-government forces focused their shelling overnight and on Wednesday on the western and southern edges of the rebel enclave. The countryside around Jisr al-Shughour in the west of the enclave was also the main target for Tuesday's air strikes, rescue workers, a rebel source and the British-based Observatory said.Turkey, which has a small military presence in observation posts it has erected along the frontlines between rebels and government forces, reiterated its warnings against an offensive. Its president, Tayyip Erdogan, was quoted by a Turkish newspaper saying an attack on Idlib would be "a serious massacre" and he hoped for a positive outcome from a summit with Russian and Iranian leaders on the matter on Friday.ALARM-The prospect of an offensive in Idlib has alarmed humanitarian agencies. The United Nations has said displaced people already make up about half of the 3 million people living in rebel-held areas of the northwest. The human rights group Amnesty International said in a statement on Wednesday that the lives of "millions of people in Idlib are now in the hands of Russia, Turkey and Iran", and urged all parties not to attack civilians.Idlib's rebel factions are divided, with a jihadist alliance that includes al Qaeda's former official Syrian affiliate holding most ground. The alliance, Tahrir al-Sham, is designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations.Russia has described Idlib as a "nest of terrorists" and a "festering abscess" that must be resolved. The United Nations Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura on Tuesday urged Russia and Turkey to find a solution and avert a bloodbath.Several other factions in Idlib, including some that fought under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, this year joined together into a new alliance backed by Turkey. This grouping, known as the National Liberation Front, also holds several important areas in and around Idlib. On Wednesday, one of the factions in it, the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham group, destroyed a bridge on the western side of the enclave, the Observatory said. Two other bridges were destroyed last week in anticipation of a government offensive, which a source close to Damascus has said is ready, and will be carried out in phases.(Reporting by Angus McDowall; additional reporting by Tom Balmforth, Andrew Osborn and Christian Lowe in Moscow and Ezgi Erkoyun in Istanbul; Editing by Angus MacSwan and Alison Williams)
