One Egyptian commentator states "what happened to the good old days when Hosni Mubarak was in charge in which no one dared to do such things because in his time there was law and order and an iron fist to whoever brakes it." One commentator states: "Its all over, Egypt has become a nation of savages, swords, guns, rifles and different weapons. Where is the security?" Security in the capital, Cairo, has to be on high alert. Sporadic incidents could spark at any moment anywhere in the capital. In the El-Nahda District shootings have become a normal thing, alongside piracy, thievery, armed robbery, drugs.Even in broad daylight thugs will walk into schools and kidnap girls. What is honor killing?

Honor killing is the bone chilling horrific cruelty committed by the family members—father, mother, brothers, brother-in-laws, even in some cases own sisters also. In this terrible episode the victim is always the daughter/sister or other blood related young women who get killed. Perpetrators are always the family members stated above. Family honor is one of the core values of Arab society. Anything from speaking with an unrelated man, to rumored pre-marital loss of virginity, to an extra-marital affair, refuses forced marriages; marry according to their will; or even women and girls who have been raped—can stain or destroy the family honor. Therefore, family members (parents, brothers, or sisters) kill the victim in order to remove the stain or maintain, and protect the honor of the family. Killers are given light sentences, sometimes with little or no jail time at all. The killers mainly defend their act of murder by referring to the Koran and Islam. Family guardian will say that they are merely following the directives set down in their Islamic ethical beliefs.

Dictums of Quran and Hadiths which may dictate/incite honor killing:

Quran- 4:15 “If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, take the evidence of four (reliable) witness from amongst you against them; if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them. Or God ordain for them some (other) way.”

Quran-24:2 “The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication—flog each of them with hundred stripes: Let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by God, if ye believe in God and the last day.”

Quran-17:32 “ Nor come nigh to adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils).

Quran-33:33 “stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display.”

Now some sahih hadiths:

Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 63, Number 196:
Narrated Abu Huraira: A man from Bani Aslam came to Allah's Apostle while he was in the mosque and called (the Prophet ) saying, "O Allah's Apostle! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse." On that the Prophet turned his face from him to the other side, whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse." The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and repeated his statement. The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side again. The man moved again (and repeated his statement) for the fourth time. So when the man had given witness four times against himself, the Prophet called him and said, "Are you insane?" He replied, "No." The Prophet then said (to his companions), "Go and stone him to death." The man was a married one. Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari said: I was one of those who stoned him. We stoned him at the Musalla ('Id praying place) in Medina. When the stones hit him with their sharp edges, he fled, but we caught him at Al-Harra and stoned him till he died.

Sahi Bukhari: 8:6814:
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari: “A man from the tribe of Bani Aslam came to Allah’s Messenger [Muhammad] and informed him that he had committed illegal sexual intercourse; and he bore witness four times against himself. Allah’s Messenger ordered him to be stoned to death as he was a married person.”

Sahi Muslim No. 4206:
“A woman came to the prophet and asked for purification by seeking punishment. He told her to go away and seek God’s forgiveness. She persisted four times and admitted she was pregnant. He told her to wait until she had given birth. Then he said that the Muslim community should wait until she had weaned her child. When the day arrived for the child to take solid food, Muhammad handed the child over to the community. And when he had given command over her and she was put in a hole up to her breast, he ordered the people to stone her. Khalid b. al-Walid came forward with a stone which he threw at her head, and when the blood spurted on her face he cursed her.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol 2. pg 1009; and Sahih Muslim Vol 2. pg 65:
Hadhrat Abdullah ibne Abbaas (Radiallahu Anhu) narrates the lecture that Hadhrat Umar (Radiallaahu Anhu) delivered whilst sitting on the pulpit of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) said, "Verily, Allah sent Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) with the truth, and revealed the Quran upon him. The verse regarding the stoning of the adulterer/ess was from amongst the verse revealed (in the Quraan). We read it, secured it and understood it. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) stoned and we stoned after him. I fear that with the passage of time a person might say, ‘We do not find mention of stoning in the Book of Allah and thereby go astray by leaving out an obligation revealed by Allah. Verily, the stoning of a adulterer/ress is found in the Quraan and is the truth, if the witnesses are met or there is a pregnancy or confession."

Al-Bukhari:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever guarantees me that he will guard his chastity, I will guarantee him Paradise”.

Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, An-Nisa’i and others:
Abu Hurayrah reports that the Messenger of Allah said, “No one commits adultery while still remaining a believer, for faith is more precious unto Allah than such an evil act!” In another version, it is stated, “When a person commits adultery he casts away from his neck the bond that ties him to Islam; if, however, he repents, Allah will accept his repentance”.

Al-Bayhaqi:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O mankind! Beware of fornication/adultery for it entails six dire consequences: three of them relating to this world and three to the next world. As for the three that are related to this world, they are the following: it removes the glow of one’s face, brings poverty, and reduces the life-span. As for its dire consequences in the next world they are: it brings down the wrath of Allah upon the person, subjects him to terrible reckoning, and finally casts him in hell-fire.”

Allah Was Originally a Pre-Muslim Arabian “Moon God”

When Islamists engage in terrorism, or use political power to introduce Sharia law, they do so because they have faith in Allah, allegedly the Omnipotent God. So, it is important to explain to them that Allah was originally a pre-Muslim Arabian “Moon god”. Modern Islamists, of course, have no idea that they worship a “Moon god”; instead they see Allah as a God, Who is the Creator of the universe. But their delusion does not alter the fact that Allah was originally a lunar deity as I will now explain.To this day, Allah's “Moon god” origins are visible on the tops of countless mosques, for example on the tops of the twin towers of the Great Mosque in Mecca, where you can see the "crescent Moon" symbol, which represented the “Moon god” in the Ancient Middle East. The crescent Moon symbol is also on the top of the Maqam Ibrahim structure beside Mecca's Kaba shrine, which is the holiest place in the world for Muslims. Finally, the same symbol is on the flags of some mostly-Muslim nations (Algeria, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan), on the flag which Libya's National Transitional Council have adopted, and on the sides of the ambulances which the Muslim equivalent of the Red Cross (the Red Crescent) operate, though those flags, and the Red Crescent emblem, were thought up long after Muslims began putting symbols of Allah the Moon god on the tops of their early mosques, and are thus, unlike those mosques, not proof of Allah's Moon god origins.Like the pre-Christian Roman Empire, which was run by people, who worshipped outer space deities like Jupiter and Mars, pre-Muslim Middle Eastern peoples worshipped heavenly bodies like the Moon, because they were in awe of the big objects they saw in outer space, and did not know what they were, as they did not have modern astronomical knowledge, which led them to decide that the big objects in outer space were deities who should be worshipped.In the Ancient Middle East, worship of the Moon god under such names as Suen and Sin (and of course Allah) was common, so common in fact that the writers of "The Old Testament" felt the need to condemn lunar deity worship in several places (Deuteronomy 4:19, and 17:3, II Kings 21:3 and 5, and 23:5, Jeremiah 8:2, and 19:13, and Zephaniah 1:5). The scorching summer heat of that part of the world, possibly made many locals decide that the Sun, which was worshipped as a god or goddess in other places, was not their big friend in outer space, unlike the Moon god who appeared during the night, when the heat of the day abated.The worship of the “Moon god” continued into the Christian era in pre-Muslim Arabia, where people in Mecca worshipped their lunar deity, Allah, at the Kaba shrine. Many gods and goddesses were worshipped in pre-Islamic Mecca, but Allah, who was seen as the father of other gods and goddesses, was the Supreme Deity.The Kaba shrine contains a famous black meteorite, which landed at the site of what became Mecca. Pre-Muslim Arabians revered the space rock, as they did not know what meteorites were, which led them to believe that their Supreme Deity had sent them the rock. So, they built the Kaba shrine to Allah at the meteorite's impact site. Mecca then developed around the Moon god's shrine, because the desert Bedouins made pilgrimages to the place, where they thought Allah had sent them a space rock.The fact that Muslims regard what was primarily a shrine to a pre-Muslim lunar deity as their holiest place is, of course, further proof that Allah was originally a “Moon god”. Why did Mohammed not build a new shrine for the God of his new religion instead of simply taking over one, which was already devoted to Allah the “Moon god”?

The fact that, to this day, when Muslims make their pilgrimage to Mecca, they kiss or touch the black meteorite in the Kaba, which is yet more proof that Allah was originally a lunar deity. Why did Mohammed not create a new "holy relic" for Muslims to kiss or touch, instead of telling them to kiss or touch Allah the Moon god's "holy relic"? Although the word "Allah" simply means "God", the fact that Muhammad did not invent a new name for his new Muslim god when he invented Islam is, of course, even more proof that Allah was originally a lunar deity. There is no debate about the fact that the Moon god worshipping Meccans referred to their supreme deity as Allah before Mohammed, which is why a man called Abd-Allah – meaning "servant of Allah", or "slave of Allah" – lived in Mecca before Muhammad and that man was very Muhammad’s father.He was presumably called Abd-Allah, because his Banu Hashim clansmen of the Quraysh tribe were pious devotees of their Moon god, as they were in charge of looking after the Kaba shrine.Abd-Allah was not given a new Muslim name after Muhammad invented Islam, because Abd-Allah died 6 months before Muhammad was born. Moreover, even Muhammad had given one of his sons the name Abd-Allah well before he began inventing Islam at the age of 40 by writing the “Koran".

Jury weighs fate of Kermit Gosnell, U.S. abortion doctor in murder trial

PHILADELPHIA - Jury deliberations began on Tuesday in the murder trial of a Philadelphia doctor accused of killing babies and a patient during late-term abortions at a clinic serving low-income women.Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, who ran the now-shuttered Women’s Medical Society Clinic, could face the death penalty if convicted by the jury in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia.The case focuses on whether the infants were born alive and then killed.The seven-woman, five-man jury began deliberations early in the afternoon on Tuesday after receiving instructions for about an hour and a half from Judge Jeffrey Minehart. The trial is in its sixth week.The charges against Gosnell and nine of his employees have added more fuel to the debate in the United States about late-term abortions.It is legal in Pennsylvania to abort a fetus up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy. Other states have recently put new restrictions on abortions, with Arkansas banning them at 12 weeks and North Dakota at six weeks.Gosnell is charged with first-degree murder for delivering live babies during late-term abortions and then deliberately severing their spinal cords, prosecutors said.His defense contends there is no evidence the babies were alive after they were aborted.Defense lawyer Jack McMahon, in his closing argument on Monday, cited testimony by Medical Examiner Sam Gulino, who said none of the 47 babies tested randomly from the West Philadelphia clinic had been born alive.“You may not like that evidence, but it is the evidence,” McMahon said.Assistant District Attorney Edward Cameron said in his closing argument that witnesses testified that one of the aborted babies was breathing before its neck was cut, another made a whining sound and another moved its arms and legs.“You have three witnesses who saw a baby breathe and move, and he killed it,” Cameron said.

It’ll help people engage and make them realize they’re not just talking about a theoretical idea.”Abortion-rights activists said Gosnell was an outlier among predominantly safe and legal abortion providers.“Gosnell ran a criminal enterprise, not a healthcare facility, and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” said Eric Ferrero, a spokesman for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.Testimony has depicted a filthy clinic serving mostly low-income women in the largely black community. McMahon said Gosnell wanted to help the under-privileged community.Gosnell is also charged with murdering Karnamaya Mongar, 41, of Virginia, who died from a drug overdose after going to him for an abortion, prosecutors said.The defense lawyer said Mongar was given guideline amounts of the drug Demerol as an anesthesia during the abortion, as had hundreds of other women at the clinic.Gosnell, who has been in jail since his January 2011 arrest, is being tried along with Eileen O’Neill, a medical graduate student accused of billing patients and insurance companies as if she had been a licensed doctor. European bishops swap notes on interreligious dialogue

Between tomorrow and 3 May the Council of Bishops' Conferences of Europe (CCEE) will be meeting in London to discuss Christian-Muslim relations

vatican insider staff rome The European continent has a long tradition of interreligious dialogue, especially with Muslims. In some parts, this tradition goes back centuries and has had some very positive results. The speed at which our societies are changing means that within the pastoral context, new and efficient ways of engaging in interreligious dialogue need to be found, particularly with the new generations who find it difficult to find their way through the jungle of relativist or syncretistic tendencies, through fundamentalism and defensive closure. What value should be given to interreligious dialogue? And in which conditions is this possible? These are some of the questions bishops and delegates for relations with Muslims in Europe will be addressing in their third meeting, which is being held between 1-3 May at the Royal Foundation of St. Katharine, in London.  “Concrete dialogue between people of different religions is possible and necessary,” says Mgr. Duarte da Cunha, Secretary General of the Council of European Bishops Conferences. “The existential dialogue between neighbours, work colleagues and classmates across Europe, creates a real network of relationships and often of friendships.”Duarte da Cunha stressed that “people do not live alone; they form part of families, communities and associations. It is possible for Christians and Muslims to come together in such contexts too. It is through a sincere and genuine relationship that one is able to testify their faith and Christians have a divine mandate to do this. One often gets the impression, however, that young people are in search of their own identity. This presents a challenge to the Church, which has to help young Christians get to know themselves and the “rules” of real dialogue. Dialogue is, in fact, a complex process which requires a willingness to listen, to really get to know another person’s religion, but also a solid religious identity. Only then will dialogue become an enriching experience for everyone and an opportunity to live together and testify one’s faith.”Participants at the meeting include bishops and delegates for relations with Muslims from more than 20 Bishops’ Conferences, European Cultural and Church organisations, experts in the field of Christian-Muslim dialogue, the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and the President of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and Archbishop of Westminster, Mgr. Vincent Nichols. The meeting will be chaired by Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux.

Instead, he says the Palestinians must recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland.It was his first public statement on the matter since the Arab League this week modified a 2002 initiative, offering comprehensive peace with Israel in exchange for a complete withdrawal from occupied territories with small land swaps.He did not address it directly, but his comments took aim at its central plank, exchanging occupied land for peace.Speaking to Israeli diplomats, he said "the root of the conflict isn't territorial. It began way before 1967," the year Israel captured the territories claimed by the Palestinians.

Arab League sweetens Israel-Palestinian peace plan

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Arab League's decision to sweeten its decade-old proposal offering comprehensive peace with Israel has placed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a bind and swiftly exposed fissures in his new government.Netanyahu's chief peace negotiator on Tuesday welcomed the modified Arab proposal, while the prime minister remained silent, reflecting the internal divisions that lie ahead as the U.S. tries to restart long-frozen peace talks with the Palestinians."This is a positive announcement," negotiator Tzipi Livni told Channel 10 TV, adding it gave "tail wind" to peace efforts. "At the end you need a direct negotiation between the Israelis and the Palestinians."The original 2002 Arab peace initiative offered Israel peace with the entire Arab and Muslim world in exchange for a "complete withdrawal" from territories captured in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians claim the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, all seized by Israel in 1967, for their future state.The initiative was revolutionary when it was introduced by Saudi Arabia's then crown prince, King Abdullah, and endorsed by the 22-member Arab League. The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation later endorsed the plan as well. However, it was overshadowed by fierce Israeli-Palestinian fighting at the time and greeted with skepticism by Israel.

In Washington Monday, Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani tried to allay some of the Israeli concerns. Speaking on behalf of an Arab League delegation, he reiterated the need to base an agreement between Israel and a future Palestine on the 1967 lines, but for the first time, he cited the possibility of "comparable," mutually agreed and "minor" land swaps between the Israelis and the Palestinians.Sheik Hamad spoke after talks with Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been pushing Arab leaders to embrace a modified version of the Arab peace plan as part of a new U.S.-led effort to corral Israel and the Palestinians back into direct peace talks. The IDF is in the midst of a sudden major drill in northern Israel. The exercise began Sunday with an emergency call-up, and will conclude at the end of the week.Roughly 2,000 reservists were called up suddenly to take part in the drill.The exercise was created due to recent threats from Israel’s northern neighbors, Lebanon and Syria.“This is a special drill, the first of its kind, which simulates a broad-based call-up, and follows the process from the [reservist’s] home to the meeting point, and reflects the real situation regarding the force’s preparedness,” a senior IDF source said.“The drill includes a change in the division’s mission; the division must create a new combat procedure based on a new operative plan within 48 hours,” the source continued.A second officer explained that the drill is meant to simulate a sudden escalation of a security threat, and to test the IDF’s ability to recruit its reserves network quickly and update plans. “The drill basically tests the ability to show operational flexibility… The scenario being played out involves Lebanon, a development that leads to a deterioration [in security],” he said.“It could just as easily have been Syria or Gaza or any other front,” he added. “Preparedness is needed there, too.”

Curia reform: Pope Francis is bowled over by an avalanche of unrequested advice

The interview clears up speculations made over the past weeks about reforms in the Roman Curia and the Vatican bank (IOR), after the Pope put together a commission of eight cardinals to advise him in matters of leadership of the universal Church and to look into a reform plan for the Curia.As far as the balance of power is concerned, as well as the idea of appointing moderators, coordinators and “economy super ministries”, Becciu said: “It is indeed quite strange: the Pope hasn’t even met his chosen group of advisors yet and advice is already pouring in. I have spoken to the Holy Father and I can say that it is far too early to be making any assumptions about the future structure of the Curia. Pope Francis is listening to what everyone has to say, but above all he will want to hear what his chosen group of advisors has to say. Then a reform plan will be drawn up…”Speaking about the IOR, the Vatican Secretary of State said: “The Pope was surprised to hear that phrases he had never pronounced being attributed to him. Phrases that misinterpret his message. The only time he referred [to the IOR] was during a brief homily which he gave off-the-cuff in Saint Martha’s House, stressing in a passionate way that the Church is essentially a love story between man and God and that man-made structures like the IOR are less important. The Pope mentioned the IOR - in the presence of the bank’s staff who were attending the mass - purely because he wanted to stress the importance of not losing sight of the real essence of the Church.”In terms of the potential reorganisation of the dicasteries, Becciu explained: “I can’t predict the time frame. The Pope has asked all heads of dicasteries to continue their service but has not confirmed any positions for the time being. The same goes for the members of Congregations and Pontifical Councils: the round of appointments and confirmed positions that usually comes when dicastery leaders’ five year mandates are up, has been suspended for now. Everyone is staying put for the moment donec aliter provideatur (until otherwise provided). This shows the Pope’s willingness to take the time he needs to reflect – and let us not forget, pray – in order to get a more complete picture of the situation.”The archbishop said the Pope’s decision to set up a commission of cardinals does not call the Pope’s primacy into question (or bruise the papacy), as has been suggested by certain traditionalist circles: “This is a consultational, not a decision-making body and I really don’t see how Pope Francis’ choice could cause people to doubt his primacy. This is, nevertheless, a very important choice, which sends out a very clear message about the way in which the Pope intends to carry out his ministry. Let’s not forget that the number one task the eight cardinals have been assigned with is to assist the Pope in governing the universal Church. I wouldn’t want people’s curiosity about the Roman Curia’s rules and structures to overshadow the immense significance of Pope Francis’ gesture.”Becciu added that the expression “to advise” is not a vague one: “On the contrary, advising is an important action which takes on a theological dimension within the Church and is expressed in many different ways. For example, think of the various bodies that foster participation in dioceses and parishes, or the councils of provincial and general superiors, in the institutes of consecrated life. The purpose of advising needs to be seen in a theological context: looking at it from a worldly point of view, one would say that a council with no power of deliberation is useless, but that would make the Church equivalent to a company. Theologically, the act of advising is of key importance: it involves assisting one’s superior in identifying and understanding what it is the Holy Spirit is asking of the Church at a given moment in time. Without it, it would be impossible to grasp the real meaning of Church government.”The Substitute’s statement comes after weeks of talk about reforms, mergers, streamlining, restructuring and even the creation of new positions such as the so-called “moderator curiae” proposed by Cardinal Coccopalmerio. But all these are, are suggestions, not actual plans that are being studied. The real work is only just about to begin. The Pope himself has been consulting and meeting with a number of people to get a clearer idea of the problems within the Curia machine. For the moment the Pope is listening rather than talking. He is looking for information rather than giving orders. So much of what is being said about real or presumed decisions taken and about documents currently under study that describe discussions which have taken place during audiences, is based on hopeful thinking rather than on anything Pope Francis has actually said.

Many in Muslim world want sharia as law of land: survey

(Reuters) - Large majorities in the Muslim world want the Islamic legal and moral code of sharia as the official law in their countries, but they disagree on what it includes and who should be subject to it, an extensive new survey says.Suicide bombing was mostly rejected In the study by the Washington-based Pew Forum, but it won 40 percent support in the Palestinian territories, 39 percent in Afghanistan, 29 percent in Eygpt and 26 percent in Bangladesh.Three-quarters of respondents said abortion is morally wrong and 80 percent or more rejected homosexuality and sex outside of marriage.Over three-quarters of Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia want sharia courts to decide family law issues such as divorce and property disputes, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life said on Tuesday.Views on punishments such as chopping off thieves' hands or decreeing death for apostates is more evenly divided in much of the Islamic world, although more than three-quarters of Muslims in South Asia say they are justified.Those punishments have helped make sharia controversial in some non-Islamic countries, where some critics say radical Muslims want to impose it on Western societies, but the survey shows views in Muslim countries are far from monolithic."Muslims are not equally comfortable with all aspects of sharia," the study said. "Most do not believe it should be applied to non-Muslims."Unlike codified Western law, sharia is a loosely defined set of moral and legal guidelines based on the Koran, the sayings of Prophet Mohammad (hadith) and Muslim traditions. Its rules and advice cover everything from prayers to personal hygiene. Amaney Jamal, a Princeton University political scientist who was special adviser for the project, said Muslims in poor and repressive societies tended to identify sharia with basic Islamic values such as equality and social justice."In those societies, you tend to see significant support for sharia," she told journalists on a conference call. By contrast, Muslims who have lived under "narrow if not rigid" Islamic systems were less supportive of sharia as the official law.
POLITICS AND VIOLENCE
More than four-fifths of the 38,000 Muslims interviewed in 39 countries said non-Muslims in their countries could practice their faith freely and that this was good.This view was strongest in South Asia, where 97 percent of Bangladeshis and 96 percent of Pakistanis agreed, while the lowest Middle Eastern result was 77 percent in Egypt.The survey polled only Muslims and not minorities. In several Muslim countries, embattled Christian minorities say they cannot practice their faith freely and are subject to discrimination and physical attacks.The survey produced mixed results on questions relating to the relationship between politics and Islam.Democracy wins slight majorities in key Middle Eastern states - 54 percent in Iraq, 55 percent in Egypt - and falls to 29 percent in Pakistan. By contrast, it stands at 81 percent in Lebanon, 75 percent in Tunisia and 70 percent in Bangladesh.In most countries surveyed, Muslims were more worried about Islamist militancy than any other form of religious violence.
SEX AND VEILS
Views on whether women should decide themselves if they should wear a headscarf vary greatly, from 89 percent in Tunisia and 79 percent in Indonesia saying yes and 45 percent in Iraq and 30 percent in Afghanistan saying no.Majorities from 74 percent in Lebanon to 96 percent in Malaysia said wives should always obey their husbands.Only a minority saw Sunni-Shi'ite tensions as a very big problem, ranging from 38 percent in Lebanon and 34 percent in Pakistan to 23 percent in Iraq and 14 percent in Turkey.
Conflict with other religions loomed larger, with 68 percent in Lebanon saying it was a big problem, 65 percent in Tunisia, 60 percent in Nigeria and 57 percent in Pakistan.A section of the survey on U.S. Muslims noted they "sometimes more closely resemble other Americans than they do Muslims around the world". AMMAN (Reuters) - The growing power of Islamist fighters in southern Syria is causing alarm in neighboring Jordan, which backs rebels battling President Bashar al-Assad but fears those linked to al Qaeda.Similar concerns among Syria's other neighbors, including Turkey and Israel, are complicating an already disjointed world response to the bloody turmoil at the heart of the Middle East.Jordan has allowed limited U.S. military training of rebels on its territory. Some other fighters have crossed from the kingdom into Syria, although others, especially Islamists, have been intercepted and even put on trial.Eighteen months ago, Jordan's King Abdullah was the first Arab leader to urge Assad to step aside, but he used a visit to Washington last week to voice Jordan's concern over "militant terrorist organizations" gaining ground along Syria's southern frontier with the kingdom.His comments in the Oval Office alongside U.S. President Barack Obama underline fears that Jordan's national security is now threatened by Islamists in Syria whose hatred of Assad is matched only by their hostility to the pro-Western monarchy.As a result, senior diplomats in Amman say, Jordan has resisted pressure from Gulf Arab states to step up arms shipments to rebels it believes might one day turn against it.Jordan is also concerned that Syria, which is widely believed to possess chemical weapons, might lash out in reprisal for any heightened Jordanian support for insurgents."The fire will not stop at our border and everybody knows that Jordan is as exposed as Syria," Assad said two weeks ago in an interview which depicted al Qaeda as a security concern for both countries - a message which resonated with many Jordanians.Syria's rebel Nusra Front, one of the deadliest forces fighting to topple Assad, declared its allegiance to al Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahri earlier this month, formally cementing an alliance with a group which has targeted Jordan in the past.At the same time, Nusra Front fighters and other rebels have opened a new battlefront in southern Syria, a move which Assad blamed on the infiltration of thousands of militants from Jordan, seizing military posts and swathes of land."The security threat comes from the Nusra Front and the radical Islamic groups - if they win and are stationed on the Jordanian border, that causes problems from the army's perspective," said retired Jordanian Major-General Fayez Dwairi.Jordanian officials, who asked not to be identified, said limited security cooperation with Damascus was continuing.
JORDAN JITTERS
As well as the danger of fighting spilling over its border from Syria's southern province of Deraa, Amman faces the familiar threat of young Jordanians joining a regional conflict and then returning home, battle-hardened and radicalized.Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi travelled to Afghanistan in the 1980s and also fought in Iraq, from where he was believed to have planned attacks on hotels in Amman which killed dozens of people in November 2005.With the Syrian border just 75 miles from Amman, the conflict in Jordan's northern neighbor is much closer to Abdullah's capital than the turmoil in Iraq ever was.So although Jordan has allowed the training of rebels on its territory and permitted some Gulf-funded arms shipments into Syria, it has rebuffed pressure to send larger consignments into the war zone, according to diplomats."Jordan national strategic interests come first and before any Gulf agenda," said a senior security official who asked not to be named, singling out Qatar for what he said was a flawed policy of empowering the Muslim Brotherhood, a longtime adversary of Jordan's monarchy.The Brotherhood's political wing in Jordan, the Islamic Action Front, has taken part in protests calling for political reform and denouncing subsidy cuts in the resource-poor kingdom, which relies on Gulf grants to narrow its gaping budget deficit.Publicly, Jordan says it remains neutral in the conflict.Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour has even denied in parliament that Jordan hosts rebel training programs - contradicting accounts from rebels and diplomats - and said the kingdom opposed any military intervention to overthrow Assad.Jordan's jitters were illustrated last month, rebels say, when it warned them not to seize the main Nasib border crossing. They said Jordanian forces also detained and interrogated local weapons smugglers to curb the flow of small arms into Deraa.Shortly afterwards Washington announced it would send an Army headquarters unit - which could theoretically command combat troops. Jordan has also beefed up its military capability on the border and requested U.S. Patriot batteries to protect it from any retaliatory missile attack from Assad's forces.
TURKEY FEARS
Syrian rebels have received military supplies via Turkey, which also frets about the rise of radical Islamists among the insurgents, fearing greater security problems along its 900 km border should they rise to prominence in a post-Assad Syria.Those concerns are limiting direct support to the opposition from Syria's northern neighbor, Turkish officials say."Turkey is at least as concerned as the U.S. and other allies about al Nusra. Turkey also thinks that the continuation of the current situation will feed more extremism," said a source close to the Turkish government.Disunity among rebels, rival allegiances and Western fears of being sucked into an open-ended conflict in which Russia and Iran back Assad have already obstructed any concerted foreign response to the crisis.But doing nothing will let the balance of forces on the ground shift towards radical Islamists, said Sinan Ulgen of the Istanbul-based Centre for Economic and Foreign Policy Studies.Another neighbor watching anxiously is Israel, whose forces occupy the Golan Heights southwest of Damascus and which shares Jordan's concerns over the spread of Islamist fighters.Western diplomats familiar with Jordanian thinking and rebel commanders on the ground say Jordan appears to be channeling weapons to moderate rebels inside Syria to protect its border - a move which might also indirectly address Israeli concerns.The two countries signed a peace deal in 1995 and have worked closely together since then on regional security.But Amman's limited support frustrates rebels who say that rudimentary two-week weapons training for hundreds of fighters will do little to tilt the military balance against Assad."There are growing suspicions about Jordan's ultimate goals in (Syria) and the way they are starting to form militias loyal to them," said Abu Haytham, a rebel commander of Ababeel Hauran, an Islamic brigade. He accused the kingdom of backing Syrian forces ready to confront the Islamists after Assad falls.Another rebel commander, Abu Omar, who lost an eye in street fighting in the southern city of Deraa, cradle of the revolt against Assad, called for more sophisticated weaponry."If the Jordanians supply us with anti-aircraft and anti-tanks weapons we will finish Deraa in a week, and not much later we will be at the gates of Damascus," the 37-year-old former trader told Reuters in Jordan's northern city of Irbid where he was being treated for shrapnel wounds.
Video footage of rebels in southern Syria has shown them wielding anti-tank weapons and heavy caliber rifles. Some appeared to have been supplied from outside Syria, but rebels say most were seized from captured army bases.According to regional diplomats, whose accounts tally with those of rebels spoken to by Reuters, Jordan's intelligence services sent a few shipments of light arms to a Jordanian-backed rebel military council, but the supplies soon dwindled.As one rebel commander described it: "The Jordanians would say, 'Wait a bit, a weapons shipment is coming'. The rebels would wait one day, two days, or a month... ATHENS/MADRID (Reuters) - Trains and ferries were canceled and hospital staff walked off the job in Greece on Wednesday and thousands were due to demonstrate across Spain as May Day triggered protests against harsh government spending cuts.Separately, Turkish riot police fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse crowds gathering in central Istanbul for a rally on what has become a traditional labor holiday.

In Spain, where the unemployment rate stands at a record 27 percent, the two largest trade unions, CCOO and UGT, called on workers and the unemployed to join over 80 demonstrations across the country.In a column in financial newspaper El Economista, CCOO Secretary General Igancio Fernandez Toxo criticized the government's "huge irresponsibility" in allowing unemployment to rise to such levels.Candido Mendez, head of UGT, said having more than 6 million people unemployed meant there had "never been a May 1 with more reason to take to the streets".In Athens, about 1,000 policemen were deployed to handle any violence during rallies and strikes called by public and private sector unions.It is the latest in a long line of strikes and protests in the debt-laden country ravaged by its sixth year of recession and popular fury over wage and spending cuts."Our message today is very clear: Enough with these policies which hurt people and make the poor poorer," Ilias Iliopoulos, general secretary of public sector union ADEDY, told Reuters."The government must take back the austerity measures, people can't take it anymore."Participation, however, was expected to be well below the levels of major protests last year when as many as 100,000 Greeks marched to the central Syntagma square chanting slogans.Unions themselves expected turnout to be low in Greece with the traditional May 1 holiday falling just a few days before Greek Orthodox Easter, which meant public schools were shut and many workers had already left for vacation.Public transport in Athens was disrupted with buses and subways halted, while ships and ferries stayed docked at ports after seamen also walked off the job. Pope Francis called on Tuesday for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to "resume negotiations" and "take courageous decisions", the Vatican said in a statement, after a meeting between the pontiff and Israeli president Shimon Peres."A speedy resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians is hoped for," it said, according to the AFP news agency."With the courageous decisions and availability of both sides, as well as support from the international community, an agreement may be reached," it added.Such an agreement should "respect the legitimate aspirations of the two peoples, thus decisively contributing to the peace and stability of the region."Peres and Francis expressed "worry for the conflict that plagues Syria" and hoped for a political solution to the crisis, the Vatican said.Peres also invited Pope Francis on an official state visit to Israel.

Israel could allow Christians to celebrate mass again in the place where according to the Christian tradition Jesus celebrated the Last Supper.Over the past few years, the Vatican and Israeli delegations have been working on a solution that involves ownership of the Cenacle, the two small rooms adjacent to it and the staircase providing access to it, be transferred to the Custody of the Holy Land. The Israeli state would maintain ownership of the convent that was built by the Franciscans (trying to ensure spaces are not given to new tenants other than the already existing ones) and the area surrounding the Tomb of David, beneath the Cenacle. Israel negotiator welcomes Arab peace plan

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's chief peace negotiator is welcoming the Arab League's decision to sweeten a decade-old initiative offering comprehensive peace with Israel.The Arab League's original 2002 peace initiative offered regionwide peace with Israel in exchange for a withdrawal from all territories captured in the 1967 Mideast War to make way for an independent Palestinian state.Under Monday's decision, announced in Washington at talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the Arabs said they would accept small modifications to the 1967 lines, as long as they are agreed upon in talks with the Palestinians.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who opposes a pullback to the 1967 lines, had no immediate comment.

The Pope will be meeting Israeli president Shimon Peres tomorrow.“We are a Christian village called Beit Jala near the city of Bethlehem. We are threatened by the construction of the famous separation barrier which Israel's military occupation means to build by dispossessing most Christian Palestinian lands with the objective of separating Bethlehem and other areas from Jerusalem and other holy sites. Up until today Israel has confiscated two thirds of our lands,” the letter reads.The letter addressed to the Pope then goes on to explain that for over a year now, the Christian community “has been meeting every Friday in these lands to pray for a positive solution to this issue.” The confiscation, the letter said, “would dispossess 58 families of their land, and would take away the land of a nursery school managed by Salesian nuns and land owned by a convent of Salesian monks and its winemaking company for a total of 1200 hectares.”Italian news agency ANSA says the letter to the Pope – “which follows a recent ruling by an Israeli court allowing the continuation of construction of the separation barrier and the expropriation of land owned by the two Salesian convents in the Cremisan Valley - cites a decision of the International Court of Justice urging all member states not to recognize the situation resulting from the construction of the Israeli separation barrier in agreement with the 1949 Geneva Convention.”

Controversial British firm wins EU security job in Gaza

A note published on the EU's Tenders Electronic Daily website on Saturday (27 April) says PPS will be paid €13.4 million plus VAT to do the work over the next four years.The fee is almost double what was foreseen in the original tender, published last July, which said the contract would be worth between €6 million and €8 million.The EU has 16 diplomatic staff and another 50 or so officials stationed in Jerusalem.Their activities in the West Bank are considered to be fairly low risk.But their occasional trips to Gaza, which hosts radical Islamist groups and which is prone to sudden eruptions of fighting with Israel, are more dangerous.One EU diplomat recalled that his first-ever visit to the Gaza strip coincided with an Israeli air strike."Within hours of arriving, I found myself in a car holding a wounded man with blood everywhere. I had to ask myself the question there and then: am I really cut out for this?" he told this website.Just two other security companies put in bids for the Gaza/West bank tender.The European External Action Service (EEAS) said on Monday it was not ready to give an immediate comment on the PPS award.But its decision caused surprise in the private security sector, given PPS' poor track record on EU contracts in Afghanistan and in Gaza/West Bank itself.PPS has been guarding EU diplomats in Afghanistan since 2008 and did Gaza/West Bank between 2005 and 2010.In Afghanistan, it failed to supply the right body armour and rifles to its guards for more than one year after the contract began.It also failed to supply proof of work done for around €1 million worth of invoices and paid a €300,000 penalty in lieu of the full amount.It was awarded a new contract for Afghanistan earlier this year, but then the EEAS changed its mind, saying PPS was non-compliant with the "necessary conditions."In its past work in Gaza/West Bank, EU diplomats said its drivers did not know their way around Gaza and that they abused local Palestinian staff.They also questioned its attempts to avoid paying social security contributions to Israel on the grounds that its Palestinian guards did not recognise Israeli sovereignty.The then EU envoy to Jerusalem, Christian Berger, wrote in an internal letter in 2009 that he was "very concerned about their [PPS] actual performance" and that the firm's behaviour "has led to reputational damage for the commission," referring to the European Commission, which managed foreign delegations before the EEAS was created.Berger repeated his criticism in 2010.The EU's anti-fraud office, Olaf, in January this year also drafted a critical report on PPS' work in Afghanistan. The text is confidential, but the EEAS says Olaf found no evidence of fraud per se.A second Olaf investigation into PPS past work in Gaza/West Bank is currently ongoing.For his part, PPS chief Stuart Page told EUobserver by email on Tuesday that his firm is still in the running for the new Kabul tender."The EEAS has chosen to halt the procurement process for the award of a new contract in Afghanistan strictly in accordance with its procurement procedures. Bomb in Damascus kills 13 day after attack on prime minister

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A bomb killed 13 people in central Damascus on Tuesday, state television said, a day after Prime Minister Wael al-Halki survived an attack on his convoy in the Syrian capital.State-run Suriya television said 70 people were wounded, several critically.The British-based Syrian Observatory reported nine dead civilians and three security personnel but said the toll was likely to rise.Pro-government Al-Ikhbariya television showed firefighters running through thick smoke after the blast in Marjeh Square. Two bodies could be seen on the ground.The target of the attack was not immediately clear. Footage showed the former Interior Ministry building near the site of the blast on one of the capital's main roads.
Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar said the bombing was a "bankrupt response" to recent gains by the Syrian army against rebels in the areas surrounding the city center.Shaar, who was wounded by a car bomb blast in December, said the United States, the West and Israel were directing the group that carried out the bombing.Monday's attack on the prime minister's convoy killed six people in what has become a common tactic by rebels.A resident of Damascus, who lives one mile from the blast site, said the explosion shook the doors of her house."It must be huge for me to hear it like that. Casualties must be horrific because it is a super busy square at this time of day," she said over Skype.Rebels have increased their attacks on Damascus, which include mortar fire from the contested suburbs, in a civil war that has cost more than 70,000 lives according to U.N. estimates. U.S. regrets Egypt walk-out at nuclear talks

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday it regretted Egypt's decision to walk out of U.N. talks on non-proliferation and still hoped all sides would agree to hold a conference on banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East.Egypt withdrew from nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) talks in Geneva on Monday in protest at what it called the failure to implement a 1995 resolution for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons - an implicit criticism of Israel, believed to be the only nuclear-armed country in the region.

"We regret the Egyptian decision to leave the NPT Preparatory Committee meeting. It does not affect the U.S. commitment to convening a conference on a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction," Thomas Countryman, U.S. Assistant Secretary for International Security and Non-Proliferation, who heads the U.S. delegation, told Reuters."We will continue to seek practical means to bring the parties together. We remain prepared to assist in any way requested, but leadership must also come from states of the region," Countryman said in comments sent by email.The conference, which was supposed to be held last December in Helsinki after being agreed at NPT talks in 2010, was postponed a month before without a new date being set.Western countries have voiced hope during the two-week session that the delayed conference could be convened this year.Iran and Syria called last week for a conference on banning nuclear weapons and urged major powers to stop helping Israel acquire nuclear technology.Egypt said it pulled out of the talks "to send a strong message of non-acceptance of the continued lack of seriousness in dealing with the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East".Israel has not ratified the 1970 NPT and therefore is not attending the Geneva session which ends on Friday.U.S. and Israeli officials have said a nuclear arms-free zone in the Middle East could not be a reality until there was broad Arab-Israeli peace and Iran curbed its nuclear program, which Tehran denies has a weapons dimension.

Israeli airstrike in Gaza kills 1 Palestinian

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli aircraft attacked a motorcycle in Gaza on Tuesday, killing a man who the military said was a top militant in a shadowy al-Qaida-influenced group who had been involved in a recent rocket attack on southern Israel.It was the first deadly airstrike in Gaza since a truce was reached with Palestinian militants last November, and is the most serious test yet of the Egyptian-brokered agreement.

The strike came alongside the fatal stabbing of an Israeli settler in the West Bank, the first killing by a Palestinian of an Israeli in the territory in over a year.The aircraft hit the motorcycle as it was traveling northwest of Gaza City, killing the driver and wounding a passenger. A bystander was also wounded, according to Gaza medical officials.The Israeli military said it had successfully killed Haitham Mishal, describing him as a jihadi militant involved in an April 17 rocket attack on the southern Israeli resort town of Eilat and other violence. Ashraf al-Kidra, Gaza's Health Ministry spokesman, said Mishal was a policeman.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had warned in recent days that Israel would not tolerate rocket fire from either the Gaza Strip or Egypt's Sinai Desert."We hit today one of those involved in the despicable rocket fire on Eilat. I said that we would not be quiet over that," Netanyahu said Tuesday. "We do not accept sporadic rocket fire from Gaza or Sinai. We will act to protect the citizens of Israel, and we are acting."
Tuesday's airstrike may strain a five-month-old cease fire brokered by Egypt last November that ended eight days of heavy fighting between Israel and Hamas. Under the deal, Gaza militants pledged to halt rocket attacks on Israel, while Israel said it would end its policy of assassinating wanted militants.But after months of calm, the truce has begun to unravel. Palestinian militants have sporadically fired rockets into open areas of southern Israel in recent weeks. The Israeli air force has responded with strikes on training sites and suspected weapons storage sites in Gaza. Until Tuesday, there had been no casualties.In a statement, the Israeli military said Mishal had been involved in the Mujahideen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem, a murky al-Qaida-inspired group that has claimed responsibility for a number of rocket attacks, including the Eilat incident.Israel viewed the rocket attack on Eilat, a normally tranquil oasis that borders the Red Sea and Egypt's Sinai desert, as an escalation. It accused Gaza militants of firing the rockets, which caused no injuries, out of Egypt's lawless Sinai desert.It said Mishal "has been a key terror figure, specializing in weapons and working with all of the terror organizations in the Gaza Strip." It said he manufactured weapons and specialized in rockets and explosive devices that he sold to militant groups.Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza, condemned the Israeli attack but also signaled that it is eager to preserve the truce.

"We call on Egypt to put pressure on the Israeli occupation to stop these crimes and to force them to honor the truce and stop the aggression," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum. He called for a "joint and unified" effort by Gaza's various militant factions.Hamas considers the jihadi groups responsible for recent rocket fire to be rivals, and has struggled to keep them in check. Since the cease-fire was reached, Hamas has deployed security forces along the border areas with Israel and Egypt to help preserve the calm.In the West Bank, meanwhile, a Palestinian man fatally stabbed an Israeli waiting at a bus stop and fired on police before he was detained by Israeli security forces, officials said.The victim was identified as a 32-year-old man from a nearby West Bank settlement. The attack took place at an intersection in the northern West Bank, near the Palestinian city of Nablus.Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the assailant stabbed the Israeli and took his gun, then opened fire at border police nearby. The officers returned fire, wounding the Palestinian who was then detained. The Israeli man died of his wounds at the scene, Rosenfeld said.Netanyahu latter expressed sorrow over the stabbing. "The terrorist who committed this murder was captured and we will continue to operate on that front to protect our citizens," he said.A militant group claiming affiliation with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah, movement took responsibility for the stabbing attack in notices posted on the Internet.The group said it had "received a green light to begin a series of operations against the (Israeli) occupiers" in response to the deaths of two Palestinians in Israeli jail earlier this year. Willem-Alexander becomes new Dutch king

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Willem-Alexander became the first Dutch king in more than a century Tuesday and pledged to use his ceremonial position as head of state to help steer his country through uncertain economic times.The generational change in the House of Orange-Nassau gave the Netherlands a moment of celebration, pageantry and brief respite as this trading nation of nearly 17 million struggles through a lengthy recession brought on by the European credit crisis.Visibly emotional, the much-loved Beatrix ended her 33-year reign as queen in a nationally televised signing ceremony as thousands of orange-clad people cheered outside. Millions more were expected to watch on television.Just over four hours later, King Willem-Alexander, wearing a fur-trimmed ceremonial mantle, swore an oath of allegiance to his country and the constitution in the historic New Church.In a speech in the church, Europe's youngest monarch underscored the ceremonial nature of his monarchy in this egalitarian society but also the symbolic and economic value a king can deliver on state visits aimed at drumming up trade."I will proudly represent the kingdom and help discover new opportunities," he said.The investiture ceremony was the final formal act on a day of high emotion within the House of Orange-Nassau and was to be followed by an evening boat tour around the historic Amsterdam waterfront.The new king gripped his mother's hand and looked briefly into her eyes after they both signed the abdication document in the Royal Palace on downtown Amsterdam's Dam Square.

Beatrix looked close to tears as she then appeared on a balcony decked out with tulips, roses and oranges, overlooking 25,000 of her subjects."I am happy and grateful to introduce to you your new king, Willem-Alexander," she told the cheering crowd, which chanted: "Bea bedankt" ("Thanks Bea.")Moments later, in a striking symbol of the generational shift, she left the balcony and King Willem-Alexander, his wife and three daughters — the children in matching yellow dresses and headbands — waved to the crowd."Dear mother, today you relinquished the throne. Thirty-three moving and inspiring years. In recent years, speculation about when she might abdicate had grown, as she endured personal losses that both softened her image and increased her popularity further as the public sympathized.Her husband Prince Claus died in 2002; and last year her youngest son, Prince Friso, was hit by an avalanche while skiing in Austria and suffered severe brain damage.
