SHOMERA — For nearly 60 days, the Israel Defense Forces has been on high alert along the Lebanese border, bracing for the retaliatory strike that the Hezbollah terror group and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had vowed to carry out.On July 20, a Hezbollah fighter was killed in an airstrike on Damascus International Airport that was widely attributed to Israel. The Iran-backed terror group threatened revenge for his death and, according to the IDF, has attempted to exact it at least twice: once on July 27 when a cell of Hezbollah members crossed the internationally recognized Blue Line border on the contentious Mount Dov and entered Israeli territory before being turned back by with warning strikes, and again on August 25 when shots were fired at Israeli troops near the community of Manara, just missing them.Nasrallah has made it clear that those failed attempts will not suffice. On August 30, he declared that his group would kill an IDF soldier in order to balance the “equation of deterrence” — a longstanding tit-for-tat policy that is meant to force Israel to think twice before killing its members.It has been reasonably effective. This can be seen in multiple cases of the IDF deliberately avoiding killing Hezbollah operatives, most recently during the terror group’s failed July 27 attack. JTA — More than one in 10 American adults under 40 believes that Jews caused the Holocaust.That’s one finding from a survey published Wednesday trying to gauge Holocaust knowledge among millennials and Generation Z, a cohort ranging in age from 18 to 39.The survey found that most respondents had heard of the Holocaust and 37% knew that 6 million Jews died. Slightly more than half could name at least one concentration camp or ghetto.But 11% of the respondents believed the Jews were responsible for the Holocaust, 15% said they thought the Holocaust was a myth or has been exaggerated, and 20% said people talk about it too much. Nearly half said they had seen Holocaust denial online.The survey of 1,000 respondents across all 50 states was organized by the Claims Conference, which coordinates restitution and reparations payments for Holocaust survivors and sponsors Holocaust education programs. It was conducted in February and March.According to the poll, there was little correlation between state Holocaust education requirements and Holocaust knowledge. None of the 10 states with the highest knowledge levels required Holocaust education in high schools, while three states in the bottom 10 — Delaware, New York and Florida — did mandate it.(The knowledge levels, as defined by the survey, were based on whether respondents had heard of the Holocaust, knew 6 million Jews were killed and could name a concentration camp or ghetto.)-Holocaust knowledge was particularly low in New York, despite the state having the largest population of Jews in the country. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is hoping to capitalize on agreements to be signed this week between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain by pressing for an end to a dispute that has roiled relations between the Gulf Arab countries.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that the U.S. is hopeful that Saudi Arabia and its regional allies will end a more than three-year blockade on neighboring Qatar that has persisted despite repeated U.S. calls for a resolution. Pompeo said it was particularly important to build on Arab-Israeli rapprochement to better confront increasing malign behavior from Iran.“To keep our focus on this work and to close the door to increased Iranian meddling, it’s past time to find a solution to the Gulf rift," Pompeo said. "The Trump administration is eager to see this dispute resolved and to open Qatar’s air and land borders currently blocked by other Gulf states. I look forward to progress on this issue.”Pompeo made the comments at the opening of the U.S.-Qatar strategic dialogue at the State Department also attended by Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and their Qatari counterparts.
