When US President Donald Trump published his triumphant Truth Social post on Thursday announcing a new agreement to disarm Hamas, remove Israeli forces from Gaza and put the Strip under the supervision of a Palestinian police force, technocrats and international peacekeepers, he ended, characteristically, on an all-caps note of vindication:“CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON THIS AMAZING DEVELOPMENT, THAT EVERYBODY SAID COULD NEVER BE ACHIEVED!”The celebration may prove premature.Indeed, the US and its partners seem to have quietly achieved a deal that, if implemented, promises to simultaneously remove (or at least defang) the threat to Israel on its southern border, return the territory to some form of Palestinian control, and allow it to begin rebuilding.But that’s a huge if. Israel has already objected to the agreement’s terms, Hamas has yet to lay down a single weapon, and the whole enterprise relies on parties that have opposing interests and don’t trust each other working in concert like a Swiss watch. No one will be surprised if this deal falls apart.Still, even at this stage, this agreement represents something rare: A chance for a variety of ideological stakeholders to all claim victory.For the entirety of the Gaza war, a pair of debates raged in tandem, with some areas of overlap.The first debate was between Israel and its global critics. Israel argued it was fighting a war of necessity against an eliminationist terror group that had massacred Israelis and promised to do so again. US President Donald Trump will be “very disappointed” if Israel doesn’t allow for the advancement of his 20-point plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, a senior US official said on Thursday.The warning was issued during a briefing with reporters shortly after Trump announced that Hamas had approved the disarmament plan put forward by his Board of Peace.Responding to reports of a breakthrough in talks between the Board of Peace and Hamas in Egypt earlier Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement pouring cold water on the optimism by claiming that the disarmament proposal did not meet Israel’s demands for a full demilitarization of Gaza in exchange for any withdrawals from the Strip.The statement apparently irked the Trump administration, prompting the senior US official to tell reporters, “We’re not asking Israel to do anything that isn’t in the 20-point plan that they agreed to initially, and so we’re very confident they will adhere to it. If they don’t, President Trump would be very, very disappointed.”“We just need them to keep to the original agreement that got their hostages home and ended the war. Gaza was the biggest thorn in their side for many years,” the official continued. “With all of the different issues they have going on right now, this is not something they want to escalate as an issue right now.”“We believe that they’ll continue to be a good partner in this and comply,” the US official added.“Israel didn’t believe we’d get the deal done to get the hostages out. They didn’t believe we’d get the bodies out. They’re very skeptical that Hamas will disarm… But Hamas did make a deal… and Hamas did come through by getting the bodies out and the hostages, so our intention is to hold Israel to its commitments as well and make sure we can be a fair broker.”The US official also called out Israel for objecting to including Qatar and Turkey in the Board of Peace.“There was a lot of criticism, particularly in Israel, when we invited Turkey and Qatar to join the Board of Peace Gaza Executive Board, but they’ve been essential partners along with Egypt in helping keep this ceasefire together,” he said. “Israel has its own craziness with their politics, and Palestinian aspirations are important. But we’re trying to put that to the side and constantly push forward.”Two-week crunch time triggered-Thursday’s briefing was scheduled by the White House to offer additional details on the disarmament proposal accepted by Hamas.A Board of Peace official separately told The Times of Israel that Hamas’s authorization triggered a 14-day period during which the sides will finalize the timeline for implementing each subsequent step of the disarmament framework.The potential timelines on the table for the full disarmament process range from roughly 200 to 350 days, another Board of Peace official said during the briefing.Once that timeline is locked in, the Board of Peace will begin holding Israel to its commitments from the October 2025 Gaza ceasefire, the second Board of Peace official said.Responding to Trump’s announcement of the agreement, senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad noted to Al Jazeera that the storage of Hamas’s weapons is contingent on a gradual Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the dismantling of militias backed by Israel.“We will not take a single step unless we are certain that Israel will also carry out its commitments,” he told the network.Hamad added that the weapons would be placed in storage only after the commitments of the first phase of the ceasefire are fulfilled — apparently referring to the entry of humanitarian aid — and after the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza enters the Strip.Holding Israel to unmet commitments-Israel was supposed to cease striking Gaza and meet a series of benchmarks pertaining to the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip that it has largely ignored.The Board of Peace largely refrained from holding Israel to those commitments, as Hamas dragged its feet on agreeing to the US-led panel’s disarmament proposal.Now that Hamas has consented to the roadmap, Israel will be expected to withdraw to the original Yellow Line that was established in the October 2025 ceasefire. That demarcation kept Israel in control of roughly 53 percent of Gaza, but Israel has since violated that clause by pushing to occupy as much as 70% of the Strip.Israel won’t be required to withdraw beyond the original Yellow Line until Hamas begins to hand over its weapons, the first Board of Peace official told The Times of Israel, adding that the IDF will only be allowed to respond to what are deemed as imminent threats.Hamas and all other armed Palestinian factions will also be required to cease all military activity after the initial 14-day period is complete and the timelines for the entire roadmap are set, the second Board of Peace official said.An Implementation Verification Committee (IVC) will be established to independently confirm that both sides are adhering to their commitments from the October 2025 ceasefire.The roadmap will not advance to a subsequent phase of decommissioning, withdrawal or reconstruction until the completion of the initial phase has been confirmed by the IVC.Enter the NCAG… on a fluid timeline-Once it is verified that the sides are adhering to the terms of the October 2025 ceasefire, the Board of Peace’s disarmament proposal envisions the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) — the panel of Palestinian technocrats tasked with replacing Hamas in governing the Strip — gradually entering the enclave, the Board of Peace official said.The NCAG will seek to maintain a continuity of services for the people of Gaza, even as it hires new civil workers, or fires or reassigns those who have been working for Hamas.While both Board of Peace officials noted the 14-day initial timeline, they — along with the senior US official — appeared to leave the door open to the possibility that the process could be dragged out, just as it has until this point.The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza holds its first meeting in Cairo on January 15, 2026. However, only a handful of representatives from Morocco, Kosovo, Albania and Kazakhstan have actually made it to Israel for eventual deployment.The Board of Peace official said the four contributing countries will also be talking to other nations about joining the ISF.The ISF will be tasked with supporting the training of the new Gaza police force, supporting the decommissioning of weapons, and positioning itself between Israeli forces and Palestinians, as the IDF gradually withdraws from the Strip, the official explained.The #ISF welcomes the newest members of the Kosovo Security Force to the team. JTA — Every congregational rabbi in Maine has signed onto a statement calling for peace and urging the state’s political leaders to stop using the term “genocide” to describe Israel’s war in Gaza, following a Democratic primary in which several candidates made the accusation.But the 11 rabbis also indicated that they, too, were unsatisfied with matters in the Middle East and called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to work toward a peaceful future.“We call upon Maine’s leaders, and particularly its political leaders, to reject the irresponsible usage of the term in describing the Israel-Hamas War,” said the statement released on Friday. “We also call upon Israeli and Palestinian leaders to end the cycle of violence and to create a better world for both Palestinian and Israeli children.”The statement, titled “A Call for Peace and Responsible Rhetoric,” argued that using the genocide term as a “political slogan does not advance peace in the Middle East.” The term “erases essential moral and legal distinctions, diminishes the meaning of genocide, and inflames hatred for the local Jewish community,” the rabbis said. Israel vehemently rejects the accusation.“Compassion for Palestinians does not require the adoption of hateful and misleading language,” they continued. “Advocating for peace does not require participation in a ‘Holocaust inversion’ against the Jewish community. And political leadership does not require demonizing one community in the service of another.”The statement came after Troy Jackson, a former logger and state Senate president, secured the Maine Democratic US Senate nomination Saturday at the party’s nominating convention to replace Graham Platner, a staunch Israel critic who dropped out of the race earlier this month. Platner faced a rape allegation, which he denies. Jackson will now run against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins in November’s general election. Both parties view the race as key to controlling the Senate.Platner routinely used the word “genocide” to describe Israel’s actions. And ahead of the convention to replace him, Jackson and several other Democratic hopefuls who later exited the race began using the term to describe Israel’s war in Gaza for the first time, a shift that drew scrutiny from some Jewish leaders and voters in the state.The use of the term has become a “currency for acquiring power and position in Maine’s Democratic party,” Rabbi Rachel Isaacs, the leader of Beth Israel Congregation in Waterville, who also signed the statement, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.“Too many Maine Democrats are cynically willing to trade in that currency at the expense of our safety and dignity,” she said in an emailed statement. “We decided we needed to say something collectively, both about the specious and dangerous nature of the claim, and about how much damage has been done to our families and congregants.”The statement Friday was spearheaded by the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine and signed by every congregational rabbi in the state, including Rabbi Bill Siemers of the Conservative Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor and Rabbi Erica Asch of the Reform Temple Beth El in Augusta. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, head of the US military’s European Command, has sent the Pentagon a written warning that if he doesn’t receive another Navy destroyer, he will have to choose between defending Israel or the US “homeland,” say unidentified officials cited by the Washington Post.The European Command coordinates operations in the Mediterranean, where its vessels help shoot down projectiles launched at Israel from both Iran and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the Post says. Two of the European Command’s five Rota, Spain-based destroyers were stationed in the Mediterranean as of Friday, according to the Post.On the other hand, the European Command is also responsible for protecting against potential Russian incursions into NATO territory and the threat posed by Russia’s long-range missiles, which can reach the US, the Post notes.The Pentagon declined to comment on the report, while the European Command did not respond to requests for comment and a spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment, the newspaper says.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday touted the Trump administration’s efforts to bring the International Criminal Court to its knees, which the US president linked to its prosecution of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.“The International Criminal Court has made themselves illegitimate because they claim that even if you’re not a member of that court, we can come after you,” Rubio said during a cabinet meeting held at the Camp David presidential retreat.“We tried to get them to reform and listen to us, they wouldn’t do it. They’re very arrogant. So we’ve now begun an effort to really try to bring them to heel,” he added.US President Donald Trump chimed in to clarify that Rubio was not advancing the initiative to defend him, as the ICC is not currently seeking to prosecute the US president.“He’s trying to defend Bibi and various other people,” Trump added, referring to the Israeli premier.
Rubio also celebrated the administration’s brokering of agreements between Israel and Lebanon as well as the disarmament deal between the Board of Peace and Hamas — “something a lot of people thought would never happen. It needs to happen, but the fact that people agree to it is a real achievement.The secretary of state’s remarks Friday came several weeks after he unveiled the administration’s effort to “dismantle” the ICC, which Trump and other senior US officials have long said should not have the authority to investigate and prosecute Americans, particularly members of the US military.The ICC was established in 2002 by the international community to prosecute war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. It asserts jurisdiction only if a member state is unable or unwilling to prosecute atrocities itself. The United States has never been a member of the court, nor has Israel.Trump’s hostility toward the court goes back to his first term. It manifested again with a plan to punish ICC officials, an idea hatched in November 2024 when Trump was reelected and the ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza.Israel has dismissed the ICC’s warrants against its officials as biased and antisemitic.
