We can hit Gaza harder, general warns as leaders meet on flareup-Following overnight rocket attack, head of IDF’s Southern Command warns Hamas that Israel ready ‘to respond more forcefully’ in future-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross-17 October 2018

A top Israeli general said Wednesday the military hit Hamas hard and would step up attacks in the future, as top political leaders and army brass met in Jerusalem to discuss how to deal with a surge in fighting with Gaza.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the high-level security cabinet Wednesday evening, after rocket fire from the Gaza Strip overnight and Israeli retaliatory strikes raised the possibility of a large-scale military conflict in the Palestinian enclave.IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, who cut short a trip to the United States due to the fresh violence in Gaza, went directly to the security cabinet session after landing in Israel, Hadashot TV news reported. As the security cabinet convened, Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the head of the Israel Defense Forces Southern Command, warned the Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group that Israel will “know how to respond more forcefully for situations in the future.”In response to the launching of two rockets from Gaza, one of which hit a home in the southern city of Beersheba, the Israeli Air Force conducted strikes against some 20 targets in the Gaza Strip, including a border-crossing tunnel. In a video, Halevi said the army conducted “significant strikes against Hamas weapons manufacturing facilities, headquarters, posts and underground infrastructure. Everything that was attacked, was destroyed. It will be difficult for them to rebuild, to bring in the money (to pay for reconstruction).”The general also accused the terror group of deceiving the Strip’s population.“Hamas pretends to rule Gaza, tells Gaza residents that it’s trying to improve their lives. But in reality, the riots on the fence, the improvised explosive device, the explosive balloons, the incendiary balloons and, as we’ve seen tonight, rockets make the lives of Gaza Strip worse,” he said.Halevi’s warning to Hamas came hours after Netanyahu vowed Israel would “act forcefully” in response to violence from Gaza. The comment came as the prime minister met with top security officials at the headquarters of the IDF’s Gaza Division for emergency consultations over the flareup, which sent already-high border tensions skyrocketing. In the Strip, Hamas members reportedly evacuated posts out of fears of fresh airstrikes overnight and the terror group’s leadership had gone into hiding.Egypt and the UN have reportedly scrambled to try to negotiate a calm between the sides since the rocket attack on Beersheba, which came days after Israeli leaders had already threatened a wider offensive over near-daily border riots and launches of incendiary balloons and kites.Reports Wednesday said that Abbas Kamel, head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services, had cancelled a trip to Gaza, the West Bank and Israel set for Thursday amid the tensions surrounding Gaza.Hamas and the second largest terror group in the Strip, the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad, officially denied carrying out the rocket attack, saying it was “irresponsible” and undermined an Egyptian-led negotiation effort.Israeli officials rejected the claim, saying only Hamas and Islamic Jihad had the capability of shooting rockets that could reach Beersheba. There were no injuries in Wednesday’s attack, despite the rocket scoring a direct hit on a home, after mother Miri Tamano managed to drag her three sons into a reinforced bomb shelter seconds before the strike. It was only the second rocket fired at Beersheba since the 2014 Gaza war. The previous rocket, which struck a field north of Beersheba on August 9, came as Palestinians fired dozens of projectiles at Israeli communities along the Gaza border.Rocket attacks on Beersheba — home to more than 200,000 people — are rare and considered a major escalation.Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan said an Iron Dome anti-missile battery would be deployed in the Beersheba area in the wake of the attack, a possible signal Israel expects hostilities with Gaza to continue despite the tentative calm that had taken hold by Wednesday afternoon.Since March 30, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have participated in a series of protests and riots dubbed the “Great March of Return,” which have mostly involved the burning of tires and rock-throwing along the security fence, but have also seen shooting attacks and bombings as well as the sending of incendiary balloons and kites into Israel. There have also been several flareups that took Israel and Hamas to the brink of war, with Palestinians firing rockets into Israel and the IDF responding with airstrikes. Some 155 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more have been injured in the clashes with IDF troops, according to AP figures; Hamas has acknowledged that dozens of the dead were its members. One Israeli soldier was shot dead by a sniper on the border.

US peace envoy says Gaza rocket attack ‘sets back’ humanitarian efforts-Jason Greenblatt condemns fire from Palestinian enclave overnight, notes resulting closure of schools in Beersheba-By TOI staff-17 October 2018

US President Donald Trump’s envoy for Middle East peace condemned the firing of rockets Wednesday from the Gaza Strip toward Israel, accusing the coastal enclave’s Hamas rulers of undermining humanitarian efforts in the Palestinian territory. One of the rockets launched overnight struck a home in Beersheba, leading to the closure of schools in the southern city, while the other landed off the coast of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. The Israel Defense Forces said it struck some 20 targets in Gaza in response to the rocket fire.“This morning schools across Beer Sheva, Israel were closed because of rocket attacks from Gaza,” Jason Greenblatt wrote on Twitter.“Once again, the regime in Gaza sets back the world’s efforts to better the lives of Palestinians in Gaza and endangers & harms Israelis,” he added. No group in Gaza has claimed the rocket attack. Hamas, which rules the Strip, and fellow terror organization Islamic Jihad issued a statement denying they were behind it. Israel said it holds Hamas responsible as the enclave’s ruler while officials noted only Hamas and Islamic Jihad had the capability of shooting rockets that could reach Beersheba.Greenblatt’s condemnation came after the European Union Wednesday said that rocket fire toward Israel must stop immediately. An EU spokesperson said in a statement that “indiscriminate attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable.”The European body also called for calm after Israel struck back with some 20 airstrikes in the Strip, saying that de-escalation has to be the priority.“The cycle of violence and despair has to be broken. Only a political solution can put an end to the violence,” the statement read.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel would “act forcefully” in response to the rocket attack, as a shaky calm appeared to return to the area. The comments came after the prime minister met with top security officials for emergency consultations over the flareup, which sent already high border tensions skyrocketing. He later convened a meeting of the high-level security cabinet to discuss the security situation in the south, as the head of the IDF’s Southern Command warned Hamas that Israel could respond more forcefully the next time.Egypt and the UN have reportedly scrambled to try to negotiate a calm between the sides since the rocket attack on Beersheba, which came days after Israeli leaders had already threatened a wider offensive over near-daily border riots and launches of incendiary balloons and kites.Reports Wednesday said that Abbas Kamel, head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services, had cancelled a trip to Gaza, the West Bank and Israel set for Thursday amid the tensions surrounding Gaza. Beersheba says no decision yet on reopening schools as tense night sets in-Many residents of south prepare to sleep in bomb shelters overnight in wake of Gaza flareup that saw rocket land direct hit on home-By TOI staff    Today, 12:37 am 0

The Beersheba Municipality said that it had still not decided whether schools there would remain closed on Thursday for a second straight day due to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip that struck a home in the southern city early Wednesday morning. It said a decision, that would be made based on developing events, was expected by Thursday morning. The Wednesday evening announcement from the municipality came as residents of southern Israel braced for a tense night following Wednesday’s violence, with many planning to sleep in bomb-proof rooms despite the tentative calm that appeared to have taken hold.“I think this night we’ll spend sleeping in the protected room. Despite the quiet today, it isn’t nice to admit there is no other choice,” Yifat Ben Shoshan, a resident of the Gaza area, told the Walla news site. She called on the military to use “any solution” to return to the status quo that prevailed in the south prior to the start of border clashes in March that have seen a number of flareups between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers, as well as the near daily launching of airborne incendiary objects at Israeli forests and farmland.“This is what our daily routine looks like,” Kibbutz Dorot resident Orli Kabuly told Ynet. “Explosions with explanations that aren’t convincing, fields and forests going up in flames, plumes of smoke in the background from [burning] tires and fires, children and adults with post trauma and work as usual.”As residents of the south prepared for the possibility of further violence overnight, the high-level security cabinet continued to meet into the early hours Thursday to discuss the security situation in Gaza.Earlier Wednesday, Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan said that the Iron Dome anti-rocket system would soon be deployed to the Beersheba area.“An Iron Dome battery will be set up in the Beersheba area in the coming days, perhaps even tonight,” Ben Dahan said in the Knesset in response to a question about the IDF Home Front Command’s preparedness for war in the south. The Israel Defense Forces would not confirm Wednesday night whether the battery had yet been deployed. The placement of the anti-rocket system near the city might signal Israel expects hostilities with Gaza to continue.Ben Dahan’s statement came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with top defense officials at the military’s Gaza Division headquarters for a security assessment following the flareup, warning that Israel would “act forcefully” in response to violence from the Palestinian enclave.Egypt and the UN have reportedly scrambled to try to negotiate a calm between the sides since the rocket attack on Beersheba, which came days after Israeli leaders had already threatened a wider offensive over near-daily border riots and launches of incendiary balloons and kites. In the predawn hours of Wednesday morning, a mid-range rocket from the Gaza Strip bearing a heavy 20 kilogram (44 pound) warhead struck a house in Beersheba, causing significant damage to the structure. The residents were spared injury as they had rushed into their bomb shelter after the incoming rocket siren sounded in the city.It was only the second rocket fired at Beersheba since the 2014 Gaza war. The previous rocket, which struck a field north of Beersheba on August 9, came as Palestinians fired dozens of projectiles at Israeli communities along the Gaza border. In response, the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes on some 20 targets in the Strip connected to the Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group and other organizations in the coastal enclave.A second rocket fired from Gaza Wednesday morning crashed into the sea off the coast of greater Tel Aviv area, known in Israel as Gush Dan. The military would only confirm that it struck “off the coast of a large city.”There was no word if an Iron Dome was or would be deployed in the Tel Aviv region.

EU says rocket fire toward Israel ‘completely unacceptable’-European body says the firing of missiles from Gaza must stop immediately, and that only a political solution can bring an end to ‘the cycle of violence and despair’-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross-17 October 2018

The European Union on Wednesday said that rocket fire toward Israel must stop immediately after a predawn missile attack struck a home in the southern city of Beersheba, causing damage but no injury.A second rocket fired from Gaza landed off the coast of the greater Tel Aviv area, known in Israel as Gush Dan, which consists of the metropolis itself along with a number of large suburbs. The comments came after the prime minister met with top security officials for emergency consultations over the flareup, which sent already high border tensions skyrocketing.Egypt and the UN have reportedly scrambled to try to negotiate a calm between the sides since the rocket attack on Beersheba, which came days after Israeli leaders had already threatened a wider offensive over near-daily border riots and launches of incendiary balloons and kites. In the predawn hours of Wednesday morning, a mid-range rocket from the Gaza Strip bearing a heavy 20-kilogram (44-pound) warhead struck a house in the southern city of Beersheba, causing significant damage to the structure. The residents were spared injury as they had rushed into their bomb shelter after the incoming rocket siren sounded in the city. The Iron Dome air defense system will be deployed to the area “shortly,” the deputy defense minister said.“An Iron Dome battery will be set up in the Beersheba area in the coming days, perhaps even tonight,” Eli Ben Dahan told the Knesset. In response, the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes on some 20 targets in the Strip connected to the Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group and other organizations in the coastal enclave.Hamas and the second largest terror group in the Strip, the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad, officially denied carrying out the rocket attack, saying it was “irresponsible” and undermined an Egyptian-led negotiation effort.Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, wrested control of the Gaza Strip from Abbas’s Palestinian Authority in 2007. Israel holds Hamas responsible for all attacks that come out of the Gaza Strip.Abbas, who is demanding a resumption of control of the territory, has been working to undermine Hamas’s government in Gaza, and in recent months has levied severe sanctions on the Strip, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis there. On Tuesday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that the military was gearing up for a major strike on Gaza to stop ongoing violence.“I’ve held a series of meetings with the head of the Southern Command, the head of the [Gaza] Division, the brigade commanders, the battalion commanders, also with soldiers. My impression is that they all have reached the understanding that the situation as it is today cannot continue,” he said.Beersheba Mayor Ruvik Danilovich on Wednesday criticized the government for not bringing calm to the south.“This is an impossible situation,” he told Hadashot TV news. “In general, what has been going on in the Negev and the south in recent months is an unbearable situation… and we call on the government to put an end to it. It is impossible to live in a situation like this, no one is eager for a fight, but if this is repeated, something must be done.”Earlier Danilovich canceled all school studies in the city until further notice. It was only the second rocket fired at Beersheba since the 2014 Gaza war. The previous rocket, which struck a field north of Beersheba on August 9, came as Palestinians fired dozens of projectiles at Israeli communities along the Gaza border.Rocket attacks on Beersheba — home to more than 200,000 people — are rare and considered a major escalation.A second rocket fired from Gaza Wednesday morning fell out at sea across from the greater Tel Aviv area. The military would only confirm that it struck “off the coast of a large city.”Since March 30, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have participated in a series of protests and riots dubbed the “Great March of Return,” which have mostly involved the burning of tires and rock-throwing along the security fence, but have also seen shooting attacks and bombings as well as the sending of incendiary balloons and kites into Israel. Kushner shielded from reporter on plane trying to ask about Khashoggi-Bodyguard tells CBS reporter there’s ‘time and a place’ for questions and ‘I don’t give a damn who you are’; Secret Service says it is reviewing the incident-By Agencies and TOI staff-17 October 2018

CBS News says a Secret Service agent blocked one of its correspondents from asking Jared Kushner a question when he was walking out of an airplane, saying there was a “time and a place” for such interactions.A network spokeswoman said Wednesday that reporter Errol Barnett happened to be on the same Washington to New York flight as the presidential son-in-law. CBS said he showed a press credential and attempted to ask a question about Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi.A short video posted online showed what appeared to be an agent saying, “I don’t give a damn who you are.”The Secret Service said it was reviewing the incident and that appropriate action would be taken depending on what its investigation shows.Jared Kushner did not answer my question and the secret service informs me, while obscuring my phone, that despite identifying as WH press, there is a “time and a place” for questions. It is unclear when and where that is. pic.twitter.com/KRzlj3hrqw— errol barnett (@errolbarnett) October 16, 2018-“I waited until everyone in front of me had deplaned and as Jared Kushner approached and the Secret Service were lining the aisle, I took out my camera. I had my CBS press pass on, I had my White House press pass as well which, as you all know, this is vetted by the Secret Service. So if the Secret Service sees this, they know you’re legit.” Barnett told his outlet.“The camera was rolling and the Secret Service agent kind of ran interference, put his hand over my phone, over the camera.”Kushner is thought to have cultivated a close relationship with Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. He has given few interviews or public statements and has avoided the press on other occasions.Hey, it’s Jared. Israel and US postal services issue joint Hanukkah stamp-Communications Minister Ayoub Kara and US Ambassador David Friedman attend commemorative launch, which also marks 70 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations-By JTA and TOI staff-17 October 2018

Israel Post and the US Postal Service have issued a joint stamp for Hanukkah on Tuesday, which also celebrates 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and the United States. The new stamp design was launched simultaneously in the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, the oldest synagogue in the United States, and at the American Center in Jerusalem.“Today’s joint stamp issue is a symbol of the shared values and the cultural affinity between the United States and Israel,” US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said at the Jerusalem ceremony.Communications Minister Ayoub Kara was also in attendance, along with the Israeli Postal Company Chairman Hezi Zaieg and the CEO of the Israeli Postal Company Danny Goldstein.Postal Service Judicial Officer Gary Shapiro said in Rhode Island: “Starting today, this work of art celebrating the Jewish Festival of Lights will travel on millions of letters and packages, throughout America and around the world.”The stamp art features a Hanukkah menorah created using the technique of papercutting, a Jewish folk art, by artist Tamar Fishman. Behind the menorah is a shape that resembles an ancient oil jug representing the miracle of the oil that burned in the candelabra in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after its sacking and recapture for the eight days necessary to resupply. Additional design elements include dreidels and a pomegranate plant with fruit and flowers. The stamp is being issued in the United States as a Forever stamp, which will always be equal in value to the current first class mail one-ounce price. It will sell in Israel for 8.30 shekels, the cost of a regular first-class stamp. Hanukkah begins at sundown on Dec. 2.The first joint US-Israel Hanukkah postal stamp was issued in 1996.

First legal weed sold in Canada at Newfoundland shops-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-October 16, 2018

The first legal recreational cannabis has officially been sold in Canada. In Newfoundland and parts of Labrador, which has a separate timezone from the rest of Canada, midnight comes earlier, and people were ready and waiting for marijuana to be sold to them over the counter. The first sales went to Ian Power and Nikki Rose, who lined up outside awaiting the opening of the Tweed retail location on Water Street in downtown St. John's.The lineup at the Tweed store started at around 8 p.m. NT, and steadily grew as the time ticked down to 12 a.m.Ian Power lined up at 8 p.m. so he could "make history.""It's been my dream to be the first person to buy the first legal gram of cannabis in Canada, and here I finally am," Power said."I'm elated. I'm so excited, I can't stop smiling. I'm not cold. It's freezing cold out, but I'm not cold."Marijuana became legal across Canada as of Oct. 17, months later than the original target date set out by the federal government. The Senate passed the bill earlier this year, making Canada only the second country to legalize cannabis.Tweed opened its doors just before midnight so customers could start filing in, amid a crowd of media, to line up to buy their first legal bud."When's the last time you bought a gram and got a receipt for it? Never happened," said Canopy CEO Bruce Linton to his first customers, Power and Rose, as they stood in the front of the line for sales to officially start."For me it just proves that Canadians are open to this, they're ready for this. It's not like, 'Oh my God look at that sketchy character,'" Linton told CBC News after ringing in the first sale.Linton added that at the company's headquarters in Smiths Falls, Ont., he was approached by a 102-year-old woman who was curious about cannabis products."Everybody wants to understand it," Linton said. "They don't like ignoring it."Scrapping the stigma-Meanwhile, Power, who said he has advocated for cannabis users and patients for years, said he's hopeful legalization will help eliminate what he calls stigma around the substance."I think the social stigma of the 'stupid stoner' or the criminal element for using cannabis, a benign substance, as my choice of medicine or recreation, I think that's gonna change," Power said."Cannabis is in all walks of life. People who are unemployed, to the lawyers and judges in the country, so why not?"Last week, the Newfoundland and Labrador government announced that as of 12:01 a.m., marijuana would be able to be sold. The NLC, the Crown regulatory agency, then said retailers would be allowed to operate from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m., meaning there's a two-hour window at the very start of Oct. 17 when marijuana can be purchased.Canopy Growth, one of Canada's largest cannabis companies, officially opened its Tweed store at 11:30 p.m.Linton nearly missed the first legal sale due to high winds Tuesday that delayed his flight, but he was able to land to be on hand to sell the country's first legal weed. There are a number of other retailers, like THC Distribution in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, just outside of St. John's, where owners are also opening for midnight sales.Owner Thomas H. Clarke said he's "living the dream" opening a pot store at home, but worries that he might be out of product by Friday. His first customer was his father, Don, while a crowd of about 100 people waited outside in line on a chilly and windy night to make their first legal purchases."It's awesome," said Don Clarke, about buying from his son's shop.He said it feels "unbelievable" to be able to purchase marijuana legally, after being a user for 50 years."A bit late. I mean, we could have done this in 1969 or '71," he said."It's been discussed at length — to overkill."While the supply may be limited when sales start up, Clarke said there will be a wider selection available as time passes and more items hit the market.Other shops also had lines outside their doors once midnight hit, with people scurrying to get in and make their legal purchases of marijuana before the mandatory closure at 2 a.m.Each province sets its own marijuana regulations, including at what age people can purchase it, locations, quantity limits and smoking locations.

U.S. border patrol warns 'amnesty' for pot convictions doesn't guarantee entry-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-October 17, 2018

A senior U.S. border patrol official is warning travellers that cannabis remains an illegal narcotic in the U.S. despite Canada's legalization — and even if you've been granted amnesty for a previous pot-related criminal conviction, you could still be denied entry to the United States. The statement comes as Ottawa readies a plan to allow people to apply for a pardon for minor pot-related convictions. A person with a criminal history typically seeks a pardon to make it easier to rent an apartment, apply for a mortgage, get a job or volunteer, or cross the Canada-U.S. border.Federal Liberal cabinet ministers are expected to unveil details of the pardon plan tomorrow — Oct. 17 — when cannabis for recreational purposes becomes officially legal in Canada."Really, we don't recognize the Canadian amnesty. If you've been the subject of a violation of U.S. laws, that will still make you inadmissible to our country," Todd Owen, the assistant commissioner of field operations at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), said in a teleconference with reporters Tuesday.Owen said it doesn't matter whether someone has received a Canadian pardon — just admitting to having consumed the drug in the past is grounds to be barred from the U.S."We hope the word is out, the education, [we're] making sure the travelling public knows that U.S. federal law has not changed in terms of marijuana. It's still a controlled substance. You may be inadmissible if you have ties to that," Owen said. While some U.S. states have dismantled prohibition — including Washington, a border state — cannabis possession remains a criminal offence federally. And the U.S. border is governed by federal law.Don't be 'less than truthful'-The U.S. CBP is privy to a traveller's criminal past in Canada — this information is recorded in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database — and the agency is warning all foreigners that a drug-related criminal history is grounds for denial of entry to the U.S.A person could apply for a waiver — a potentially lengthy and costly process that, even if successful, makes cross-border travel much more difficult.Owen said anyone who has ever consumed the drug in the past, is an "addict" and/or a drug abuser, could be deemed inadmissible. Border guards, Owen said, are generally trying to prevent someone who has a proclivity for consuming cannabis from doing so on American soil.Under U.S. law, even a traveller who admits to having smoked cannabis casually in the past could be denied entry. For American border guards, a confession is just as good as a conviction.Owen did not make it clear how CBP would deal with someone who has sought, and received, a record suspension — a pardon — from the Canadian federal government, as a pardon usually ensures an individual's criminal past is removed from the CPIC database.CBC News has asked for clarity and will update this story accordingly.Regardless, Owen stressed that all Canadians should be completely truthful with border guards when crossing south — especially about their criminal history — or risk being banned from the U.S. for life."You definitely don't want to be less than truthful when you're being interviewed by a CBP officer," Owen said. Moreover, Owen said those found at the border with cannabis on their person, or in their car, could face arrest and prosecution by U.S. officials.Conversely, it is illegal for a person travelling to Canada to bring cannabis with them across the border, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has said.A government official, speaking on background to CBC News Tuesday, said all CBSA guards will now be required to ask each and every traveller about cannabis possession at the border, and a question about cannabis use will be added to the declaration forms travellers fill out when entering Canada by air.Cannabis investors are warned-Owen also sought to clarify the U.S. agency's position on a Canadian who is an owner of, or an investor in, a cannabis-related business. He said, for example, that someone who holds an interest in a cannabis company through a mutual fund or a pension plan fund, or through some other indirect means, likely will not face greater scrutiny at the border. But he said an owner or major investor linked to a cannabis company, travelling to the U.S. on cannabis-related business, likely would be denied entry."If a Canadian is knowingly engaged, and invested, in the marijuana industry and is going to the U.S. for that specific purpose — to facilitate the industry — they would be found inadmissible."If a Canadian is working in the legalized business and coming to the U.S. for a different intent — they're coming to go shopping or do some other recreational activity — they could be found admissible.

Jubilant customers light up as pot sales begin in Canada-[Associated Press]-ROB GILLIES, GENE JOHNSON and TRACEY LINDEMAN-YAHOONEWS-October 17, 2018

MONTREAL (AP) — Jubilant customers stood in long lines for hours then lit up and celebrated on sidewalks Wednesday as Canada became the world's largest legal marijuana marketplace. In Toronto, people smoked joints as soon as they rolled out of bed in a big "wake and bake" celebration. In Alberta, a government website that sells pot crashed when too many people tried to place orders. And in Montreal, Graeme Campbell welcomed the day he could easily buy all the pot he wanted. In the past, it was "hard to find people to sell to me because I look like a cop," the clean-cut, 43-year-old computer programmer said outside a newly opened pot store. He and his friend Alex Lacrosse were smoking when two police officers walked by. "I passed you a joint right in front of them and they didn't even bat an eye," Lacrosse told his friend.Festivities erupted throughout the nation as Canada became the largest country on the planet with legal marijuana sales. At least 111 pot shops were expected to open Wednesday across the nation of 37 million people, with many more to come, according to an Associated Press survey of the provinces. Uruguay was the first country to legalize marijuana.Ian Power was first in line at a store in St. John's, Newfoundland but didn't plan to smoke the one gram he bought after midnight."I am going to frame it and hang it on my wall," the 46-year-old Power said. "I'm going to save it forever."Tom Clarke, an illegal pot dealer for three decades, opened a pot store in Portugal Cove, Newfoundland, and made his first sale to his dad. He was cheered by the crowd waiting in line."This is awesome. I've been waiting my whole life for this," Clarke said. "I am so happy to be living in Canada right now instead of south of the border."By afternoon, Clarke had sold his entire cannabis supply and had to turn away customers. The start of legal sales wasn't the only good news for pot aficionados. Canada said it intends to pardon everyone with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the newly legal threshold."I don't need to be a criminal anymore, and that's a great feeling," singer Ashley MacIsaac said outside a government run shop in Nova Scotia. "And my new dealer is the prime minister!"Medical marijuana has been legal since 2001 in Canada, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has spent the past two years working toward legalizing recreational pot to better reflect society's changing opinion about marijuana and to bring black market operators into a regulated system.Corey Stone and a friend got to one of the 12 stores that opened in Quebec at 3:45 a.m. to be among the first to buy pot. Hundreds later lined up."It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing — you're never ever going to be one of the first people able to buy legal recreational cannabis in Canada ever again," said Stone, a 32-year restaurant and bar manager. The stores have a sterile look, like a modern clinic, with a security desk to check identification. The products are displayed in plastic or cardboard packages behind counters. Buyers can't touch or smell the products before they buy. A small team of employees answer questions but don't make recommendations."It's a candy store, I like the experience," said Vincent Desjardins, a 20-year-old-student who plans to apply for a job at the Montreal shop.Canadians can also order marijuana products through websites run by provinces or private retailers and have it delivered to their home by mail.At 12:07 a.m., the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission tweeted: "You like us! Our website is experiencing some heavy traffic. We are working hard to get it up and running."Alberta and Quebec have set the minimum age for purchase at 18, while other provinces have made it 19. Rules vary in different jurisdictions about whether people can smoke pot outside.Fire and Flower Chief Executive Trevor Fencott brought his wife and three children — 16, 13 and 6 — for the opening of a company pot shop in Edmonton, even though the law forbid his children from going inside."Legalization is about daylighting a lot of stuff that used to be in the shadows," he said. "Our kids are going to inherit this system, for better or worse, and I thought it was important for them to see this sea change in Canadian society."No stores will open in Ontario, which includes Toronto. The nation's most populous province is working on its regulations and doesn't expect stores to operate until spring. The Pacific Coast province of British Columbia has just one store open, but it's not in Vancouver, one of Canada's largest cities.A patchwork of regulations has spread in Canada as each province takes its own approach within the framework established by the federal government. Some provinces have government-run stores, others allow private retailers, and some have both.Canada's national approach allows unfettered banking for the pot industry, inter-province shipments of cannabis and billions of dollars in investment — a sharp contrast with prohibitions in the United States, where nine states have legalized recreational sales of pot and more than 30 have approved medical marijuana. Many Americans are likely to cross into Canada to buy and use pot, but they can't take it back. U.S. border authorities have issued reminders that travelers could face arrest if caught with it.Bruce Linton, CEO of marijuana producer and retailer Canopy Growth, claims he made the first sale in Canada — less than a second after midnight in Newfoundland."It was extremely emotional," he said. "Several people who work for us have been working on this for their entire adult life and several of them were in tears."Cam Battley, chief corporate officer of Aurora Cannabis, also one of Canada's largest cannabis companies, said it's not every day you get to be involved in the start of a new industry."The world trusts Canada to be a leader in this," he said. "We're not known as wild and crazy. We're known for good public policy and I think they will follow our lead."___Rob Gillies reported from Toronto. Tracey Lindeman reported from Montreal. HOSEA 4:1-3

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24
22  The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

China says interning Muslims brings them into 'modern' world-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-October 17, 2018

BEIJING — China on Tuesday characterized its mass internment of Muslims as a push to bring into the "modern, civilized" world a destitute people who are easily led astray — a depiction that analysts said bore troubling colonial overtones. The report is the ruling Communist Party's latest effort to defend its extrajudicial detention of Central Asian Muslim minorities against mounting criticism.China's resistance to Western pressure over the camps highlights its growing confidence under President Xi Jinping, who has offered Beijing's authoritarian system as a model for other countries.About 1 million Uighurs, Kazakhs and other minorities have been arbitrarily detained in mass internment camps in China's far west Xinjiang region, according to estimates by a U.N. panel. Former detainees say they were forced to disavow their Islamic beliefs in the camps, while children of detainees are being placed in dozens of orphanages across the region. The report by the official Xinhua News Agency indicated that key to the party's vision in Xinjiang is the assimilation of the indigenous Central Asian ethnic minorities into Han Chinese society — and in turn, a "modern" lifestyle.Xinjiang Gov. Shohrat Zakir said the authorities were providing people with lessons on Mandarin, Chinese history and laws. Such training would steer them away from extremism and onto the path toward a "modern life" in which they would feel "confident about the future," he said."It's become a general trend for them to expect and pursue a modern, civilized life," Zakir said, referring to the trainees. He said the measures are part of a broader policy to build a "foundation for completely solving the deeply-rooted problems" in the region.China has long viewed the country's ethnic minorities as backward, said James Leibold an expert on Chinese ethnic polices at Melbourne's La Trobe University.Leibold described Beijing's perspective on minorities as: "They're superstitious, they're deviant, they're potentially dangerous. The role of the party-state is to bring them into the light of civilization, to transform them."Despite growing alarm from the U.S. and the United Nations, China has maintained that Xinjiang's vast dragnet of police surveillance is necessary for countering latent extremism and preserving stability. The Turkic-speaking Uighurs (pronounced WEE-gurs) have long resented restrictions placed on their religious practices. They say they experience widespread discrimination in jobs and access to passports. In the Xinhua report, Zakir said authorities provide free vocational training in skills geared toward manufacturing, food and service industries. Zakir said "trainees" are paid a basic income during the training, in which free food and accommodations are provided. The report appeared aimed at disputing accounts provided by former detainees, who have said they were held in political indoctrination camps where they were forced to denounce Islam and profess loyalty to the party.Ethnic Uighurs and Kazakhs have told The Associated Press that ostensibly innocuous acts such as praying regularly, viewing a foreign website or taking phone calls from relatives abroad could land one in a camp.Zakir said the training centres were for people "who are influenced by terrorism and extremism, and those suspected of minor criminal offences " who could be exempted from criminal punishment.Zakir did not say whether such individuals were ever formally charged with any crime or provided a chance to defend themselves against the allegations. The report also did not say if attendance was mandatory, though former detainees have said they were forcibly held in centres policed by armed guards.Maya Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the system deprived detainees of basic legal protections such as access to lawyers. The authorities' attempts to justify the camps "illustrate what the 'rule of law' in China means — that the party bends it to its will and uses it as a weapon against perceived political enemies," Wang said in an email.Zakir did not say how many people were in such courses, but said some would be able to complete their courses this year.Zakir seemed to try to counter reports of poor living conditions within the camps, saying that "trainees" were immersed in athletic and cultural activities. The centres ' cafeterias provide "nutritious, free diets," and dormitories are fully equipped with TVs, air conditioning and showers, he said.Omir Bekali, a Xinjiang-born Kazakh citizen, said he was kept in a cell with 40 people inside a heavily guarded facility.Bekali said he was kept in a locked room with eight other internees. They shared beds and a wretched toilet. Baths were rare. Before meals, they were told to chant "Thank the party! Thank the motherland!" During daily mandatory classes, they were told that their people were backward before being "liberated" by the party in the 1950s.The idea that one's beliefs can be transformed through indoctrination dates back to the Mao Zedong era, when self-criticisms and public humiliation were routinely employed to stir up ideological fervour .The program's philosophies can be traced even further back to the late imperial era, when Xinjiang's "natives" were seen as requiring education in the Confucian way, according to Michael Clarke, a Xinjiang expert at Australian National University.Amnesty International called the Xinhua report an insult to detainees and the families of people who have gone missing in the crackdown."No amount of spin can hide the fact that the Chinese authorities are undertaking a campaign of systematic repression," the human rights group said.Yanan Wang, The Associated Press.

Waive wireless bills for some Hurricane Michael victims: U.S. FCC chief-[Reuters]-By David Shepardson-YAHOONEWS-October 17, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai on Tuesday called for wireless carriers to waive October bills for people hardest hit by Hurricane Michael after some Florida residents expressed frustration in getting mobile phone service restored.Pai also said consumers in those areas should be allowed to switch carriers without paying a penalty.Verizon Communications Inc, which has been criticized for the pace of its restoration efforts, said late on Tuesday that all consumer and business customers in hard hit Bay County and Gulf County, Florida, would be automatically credited for three months of mobile service for each line they have.At least 18 deaths in four states have been blamed on Michael, which crashed into the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 10 as one of the most powerful storms on record to hit the continental United States. The storm damaged fiber networks and electrical wires necessary for broadband and mobile phone service.Pai said in a written statement the progress in restoring service is "completely unacceptable" and that the FCC will investigate the outages. The request from the chair of the nation's telecommunications regulator came after Florida Governor Rick Scott, who is locked in a tough race for the U.S. Senate, earlier on Tuesday called on carriers to waive bills for customers without service and allow consumers to change carriers without penalty.Verizon has attributed the delay in part to significant damage to fiber connections in Florida's Panhandle and the strength of the storm. On Tuesday, the FCC said that 61.5 percent of cell sites remain out of service in Bay County, down from 65.4 percent on Monday.Scott said "telecommunications companies should be open and transparent with Floridians and do so with a clearly communicated plan to quickly restore service."U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat running for re-election against Scott, earlier on Tuesday asked carriers to "provide a 60-day moratorium on late fees, interest accrual, penalties and any other unnecessary costs to give people time to recover and get back on their feet."In a letter to Verizon on Tuesday, Nelson said "too many of your Florida customers in the Panhandle are still not able to use your network. This is not acceptable, especially when your competitors have been restoring service much faster."AT&T Inc spokesman Michael Balmoris said the company has implemented credits for customers in hard-hit areas and plans to extend those credits through Oct. 21. AT&T plans to continue those "as conditions require."AT&T has deployed 15 large-scale portable cell sites to the most storm damaged areas.(Reporting by David Shepardson in Washington; Editing by Leslie Adler and Matthew Lewis)

Trump vows ‘severe punishment’ if journalist was killed by Saudi Arabia-But president says he doesn’t want to limit US arms sales to Riyadh, even if kingdom found responsible for demise of Jamal Khashoggi-By AFP-TOI-OCT 16,18

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has said Saudi Arabia could be behind the disappearance of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi and warned Washington would inflict “severe punishment” if he was murdered. The Saudi critic has not been seen since he walked into the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2, with Turkish officials accusing Riyadh of murdering him inside the diplomatic mission.“We’re going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment,” Trump told CBS’s “60 Minutes” program, according to an excerpt of an interview that was released on Saturday.“As of this moment, they deny it and they deny it vehemently. Could it be them? Yes,” Trump said in the interview, which was conducted on Thursday, when asked if Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi Arabia. The network said it will air the interview in full on Sunday evening.Trump added the matter was especially important “because this man was a reporter.”But when asked what options Trump would consider, the president said he was not keen to limit arms sales to the kingdom — a position he has previously voiced.“Well, it depends on what the sanction is,” he said.“I’ll give you an example — they are ordering military equipment. Everybody in the world wanted that order. Russia wanted it, China wanted it, we wanted it. We got it, and we got all of it, every bit of it.He added: “I’ll tell you what I don’t want to do. Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, I don’t want to hurt jobs. I don’t want to lose an order like that. And you know what, there are other ways of punishing, to use a word that’s a pretty harsh word, but it’s true.”

Hamas leader: We won’t halt Gaza marches for ‘diesel fuel and dollars’-Ismail Haniyeh says ‘blood of martyrs brings us closer to victory over Zionist enemy,’ vows ongoing fight until ‘siege on Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and all lands of Palestine is lifted’-By TOI staff-OCT 16,18

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said Saturday that the violence at the Gaza border will continue until the “siege on Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and all the lands of Palestine is lifted.”“The strength of will and the determination of our people in the March of Return will lead to victory over the crimes of the occupation,” he said during funerals for those killed in the previous day’s border riots. “The blood of the martyrs brings us closer to victory over the Zionist enemy.”Israel on Friday halted the transfer of fuel to Gaza in response to heavy rioting and attacks at the border fence. Haniyeh said “our marches are not for diesel fuel and dollars, but a natural right of our people.”Seven Palestinians were reported killed in intense clashes with Israeli security forces along the Gaza border Friday afternoon, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Gaza media outlets said at least 150 protesters were injured.Earlier on Saturday minister and security cabinet member Yoav Gallant described the terrorist group as Israel’s “weakest and most aggressive enemy, a puppy that barks and shouts.”He slammed Hamas for its actions in Gaza, saying it was “using the blood of civilians to provoke international attention.”The army said Friday that assailants planted a bomb at the fence in the south of the Strip, blowing a hole in it. Some 20 Gazans then infiltrated the border and approached an IDF snipers’ post. Most turned back, but three who did not were shot and killed, the IDF said.Meanwhile, 10 fires broke out in southern Israel that were sparked by incendiary balloons launched over the border from Gaza as part of the ongoing protests. Heavy smoke from burning tires at the Kerem Shalom crossing in the northern Strip prompted authorities in Israel to order residents of the adjacent kibbutz to stay indoors as firefighters set up large fans to clear the smoke. In response to the violence Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman ordered a halt to the transfer of fuel into the Gaza Strip, only days after Israel began allowing hundreds of liters of fuel to be pumped into the Strip to allow increased power for residents.“Israel will not tolerate a situation in which fuel is allowed into Gaza while terror and violence is used against IDF soldiers and citizens,” a statement from his office said.In recent days Qatari-bought fuel had begun entering the Strip to allow operation of its only power station, in a bid to alleviate conditions in the blockaded Palestinian enclave. Hundreds of liters of fuel have since passed into the territory.Israel facilitated the delivery over the objections of the Palestinian Authority, hoping it would help ease months of protests and clashes.A Qatari official told the Reuters news agency that the $60 million fuel donation came “at the request of donor states in the United Nations, to prevent an escalation of the existing humanitarian disaster.”For months residents of the strip have been receiving only four hours of electricity a day on average. Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s resident humanitarian coordinator, told the Reuters news agency the delivery will add a few more hours of electricity to Gaza’s 2 million residents.Hamas seized control of Gaza from Abbas’s Palestinian Authority in a 2007 near civil war and multiple reconciliation attempts aimed at restoring the PA to power in Gaza have failed.Abbas says that making deals with Hamas amounts to recognizing their control over Gaza in place of the PA and has sought to block the fuel deliveries. He has reportedly threatened to cut off funds to Gaza in response to the fuel transfers.Israel fears further deterioration in Gaza could lead to another round of war on the southern border. Both Israel and Egypt enforce restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza. Israel says the blockade is necessary to keep Hamas and other terror groups in the Strip from arming or building military infrastructure.Agencies contributed to this report.

Minister: ‘Hamas is a weak and aggressive enemy — a barking and shouting puppy’-After 7 killed in violent riots at border Friday, Yoav Gallant warns terrorist group it will pay a heavy price if Gaza aggression continues-By TOI staff-OCT 16,18

Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Gallant on Saturday slammed Hamas for its actions in Gaza, saying it is “using the blood of civilians to provoke international attention.”A member of the security cabinet, Gallant told an event in Tel Aviv that Israel will not back down in the face of the actions of the terrorist group.“If Hamas continues its provocations and this deteriorates into terrorist acts as we have seen, we will take the gloves off,” he threatened, according to Hadashot news. “Hamas will pay a heavy price,” he said.Gallant, who headed the IDF Southern Command between 2005 and 2010, which included Operation Cast Lead — the three-week-long Gaza war that lasted from late 2008 until early 2009 — claimed the balance of power in the conflict remains in Israel’s hands at a scale of “one thousand to one.”“They are our weakest and most aggressive enemy, a puppy that barks and shouts,” he said. However Gallant maintained that Israel does not want a war and that Hamas has the ability to resolve the situation, after noting that the IDF was instructed to use minimal possible force against Gaza protesters.“If you are forced into a reality where you have to use force, you have to fall on the enemy with great force,” he said. “We have not yet reached this point — but we do not rule out that it could happen.”In response to heavy rioting and attacks at the border fence on Friday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman ordered a halt to the transfer of fuel into the Gaza Strip, only days after Israel began allowing hundreds of liters of fuel to be pumped into the Strip to allow increased power for residents.“Israel will not tolerate a situation in which fuel is allowed into Gaza while terror and violence is used against IDF soldiers and citizens,” a statement from his office said.Seven Palestinians were reportedly killed in intense clashes with Israeli security forces along the Gaza border Friday afternoon, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Gaza media outlets said at least 50 protesters were injured by Israeli fire.In the worst incident, the army said Gaza assailants planted a bomb near the fence in the southern part of the Strip, blowing a hole in the barrier, and that 20 Gazans then burst through it. Most turned back, but three of them who approached an IDF snipers’ post were shot and killed.Meanwhile, 10 fires broke out in southern Israel that were sparked by incendiary balloons launched over the border from Gaza as part of the ongoing protests. Heavy smoke from burning tires at the Kerem Shalom crossing in the northern Strip prompted authorities in Israel to order residents of the adjacent kibbutz to stay indoors as firefighters set up large fans to clear the smoke.Channel 10 news military analyst Alon Ben-David said Israel had seen Friday as a test for Hamas, which had been expected to temper border protests in response to Israel allowing the transfer of fuel into the Strip. Hamas had failed this test, he said.In recent days Qatari-bought fuel had begun entering the Strip to allow operation of its only power station, in a bid to alleviate conditions in the blockaded Palestinian enclave. Hundreds of liters of fuel have since passed into the territory.Israel has facilitated the delivery over the objections of the Palestinian Authority, hoping it will help ease months of protests and clashes.A Qatari official told the Reuters news agency that the $60 million fuel donation came “at the request of donor states in the United Nations, to prevent an escalation of the existing humanitarian disaster.”For months residents of the strip have been receiving only four hours of electricity a day on average. Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s resident humanitarian coordinator, told the Reuters news agency the delivery will add a few more hours of electricity to Gaza’s 2 million residents. But it was met with criticism by officials close to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose rival administration was not involved.Hamas seized control of Gaza from Abbas’s Palestinian Authority in a 2007 near civil war and multiple reconciliation attempts aimed at restoring the PA to power in Gaza have failed.Abbas says that making deals with Hamas amounts to recognizing their control over Gaza in place of the PA and has sought to block the fuel deliveriesIn a statement Tuesday Azzam al-Ahmad, a senior official close to Abbas, threatened retaliatory measures if the fuel deliveries continued.Abbas has reportedly threatened to cut off funds to Gaza in response to the fuel transfers.“When Qatar pays for the fuel, Hamas in Gaza will collect the bills and put it in its pocket, and this is an indirect financial aid to Hamas,” a PA official said Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.Israel fears further deterioration in Gaza could lead to another round of war on the southern border. The halt of some $96 million that the PA sends monthly to the Gaza Strip could drive a desperate and cash-strapped Hamas toward conflict with Israel as a means of propping up its rule, and in the hope that bloodshed could generate sympathy for Gaza and reverse or replace the cut in aid from the US and Ramallah for Gazan welfare and development, Israeli officials believe.Israel also worries that a spike in violence in the south could easily spread to the West Bank.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Abbas was exacerbating Gaza woes and thereby fueling its residents’ aggression toward Israel.“Abbas is strangling them economically and they lash out at Israel,” he told a press conference in his Jerusalem office.Netanyahu did not specifically refer to the oil shipment but spoke of “attempts to reach a practical solution so that he will stop this strangulation.”He said that if Gaza tensions reached a boiling point and brought an uptick in attacks on neighboring southern Israel “the price they will pay will be very great.”“I’m not looking to launch unnecessary wars,” he said. “But if there’s no alternative you wage war with all your strength.”Both Israel and Egypt enforce a number of restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza. Israel says the blockade is necessary to keep Hamas and other terror groups in the Strip from arming or building military infrastructure. But the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened steadily, and Hamas’s reconciliation talks with the Palestinian Authority have broken down.Agencies contributed to this report.

Russia probes ISS rocket failure-[AFP]-Kirill KUDRYAVTSEV in Baikonur with Theo MERZ in Moscow-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

Baikonur (Kazakhstan) (AFP) - Russian investigators have launched a probe into why a Soyuz rocket failed shortly after blast-off, in a major setback for Russia's beleaguered space industry.US astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin were forced to make an emergency landing after the incident on Thursday, but were rescued without injury in Kazakhstan.Russian officials said they were launching a criminal investigation into the accident, the first such incident on a manned flight in the country's post-Soviet history. The Russian space industry has suffered a series of problems in recent years, including the loss of a number of satellites and spacecraft. Officials said they would suspend manned launches in light of the latest accident."The emergency rescue system worked, the vessel was able to land in Kazakhstan... the crew are alive," the Russian space agency Roscosmos said in a tweet."An accident with the booster, two minutes, 45 seconds," the voice of Ovchinin could be heard saying calmly in live-streamed footage of the launch from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome. The incident came as the rocket was travelling about 4,700 miles (7,500 kilometres) per hour, just 119 seconds into the voyage, according to NASA."Shortly after launch, there was an anomaly with the booster and the launch ascent was aborted, resulting in a ballistic landing of the spacecraft," the US space agency said in a statement. The descent was sharper than usual, meaning the crew were subjected to a greater G-force, but they were prepared for this scenario in training, according to a commentator on NASA's video livestream of the launch."We're tightening our seatbelts," Ovchinin said in the video."That was a short flight."- Documents seized in probe -Rescue workers reached the site of the emergency landing and evacuated Ovchinin and Hague.Photos released by Russian government and NASA Twitter accounts later showed the men embracing their families and enjoying a hearty Russian meal back on the ground.Russia is currently the only country taking crew to and from the ISS.The European Space Agency, whose astronaut Alexander Gerst is on the ISS, said in a statement that "the aborted launch will have influence on the planning for the near future".Stefan Beransky, editor of the specialist Aerospatium magazine and author of a book on the Soyuz rocket, said now "the main problem is that there are two fewer people at the station"."As we wait for the conclusions of a Russian probe, the Soyuz will perhaps be grounded for some time," he told AFP.Russia's Investigative Committee said a criminal probe would seek to determine whether safety regulations had been violated during construction, causing major damage."Officials are currently examining the launch site, documents are being seized," it said in a statement."Thank God the cosmonauts are alive," Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.Kenny Todd, operations integration manager at the International Space Station said he "had every confidence that our Russian colleagues will figure out what's going on".There have been two similar Soviet-era accidents involving the Soyuz spacecraft, which are still used to ferry crews to and from the ISS.In 1975, Oleg Makarov and Vasily Lazarev made a successful emergency landing in Siberia's Altai mountains following problems during booster separation.Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov survived a fire during launch in Kazakhstan in 1983.Former military pilots Ovchinin and Hague had been set to join the ESA's Gerst, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos following a six-hour flight.- Hole on the ISS -The International Space Station -- a rare point of cooperation between Moscow and Washington -- has been orbiting the Earth since 1998.But even the space station has proved a source of controversy in recent weeks.Russian space officials have said they are investigating whether a hole that caused an oxygen leak on the ISS was drilled deliberately by astronauts. The hole was detected in August and quickly sealed up, but Russian newspapers said Roscosmos was probing the possibility that US crewmates had sabotaged the space station to get a sick colleague sent back home.

EARTH DESTROYED WITH THE EARTH IN NOAHS DAY(BECAUSE OF SIN,VIOLENCE AND GODLESS PEOPLE)

GENESIS 6:11-13
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.(WORLD TERRORISM,MURDERS)(HAMAS IN HEBREW IS VIOLENCE)
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence (TERRORISM)(HAMAS) through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24
22  The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and gas output returning to normal post storm-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 16, 2018

HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production is returning to near normal levels three days after Hurricane Michael made landfall on the Florida Panhandle, data from an offshore regulator showed on Saturday, with oil output off 19 percent and natural gas production down less than 10 percent. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) also said in an midday update that only one evacuated production platform was still unoccupied, down from 89 platforms on Wednesday. It can take several days after a storm passes to inspect platforms for damages, fully return crews and restore production after wells are shut-in ahead of a storm.Michael entered the Gulf as a tropical storm and quickly spun into a major hurricane, producing rough seas and winds of up to 155 miles per hour (250 kph) when it made landfall near Panama City, Florida, on Wednesday. As of midday on Saturday, the storm had left at least 18 dead in four Southeast U.S. states and damages to communities in its path were estimated in the billions of dollars. It was one of the most powerful storms recorded in U.S. history. The Gulf production still offline on Saturday morning represented 330,394 barrels per day of oil production and 247 million cubic feet per day of natural gas output, BSEE reported from a survey of 17 oil and gas producers. In all, Michael cost Gulf producers about 3.27 million barrels of oil this week.Offshore production in federal waters of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico accounts for 17 percent of total U.S. crude output and 5 percent of national natural gas production, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.BSEE said its Saturday survey of producers showed that all drilling rigs and vessels that had been evacuated or moved to safer areas of the Gulf ahead of the storm were reoccupied and back at their drilling positions.(Reporting by Gary McWilliams; Editing by Marguerita Choy)

Crowbars, cadaver dogs in search for survivors, bodies after Florida hurricane-[Reuters]-By Rod Nickel-YAHOONEWS-October 16, 2018

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Search and rescue volunteers have located hundreds of people reported missing in the U.S. Southeast after Hurricane Michael tore through their Florida Panhandle communities, but the death toll of at least 18 was expected to rise.Crews heard cries for help and crowbarred into a mobile home crumpled by the storm in Panama City, freeing a mother and daughter, both diabetics who had been trapped in a closet without insulin for two days and were on the verge of diabetic shock, rescuers said on Saturday."We had another lady who was on her last tank of oxygen. No cell phone, no power, no nothing. There are people out here on dialysis, but there is no power," said Taylor Fontenot, 29, a roofing contractor from Sugar Land, Texas, and founder of 50 Star SAR, a volunteer search and rescue organization. In door-to-door searches, teams consisting mostly of off-duty police officers and firefighters have found more than 520 of the 2,100 people reported missing since Michael crashed ashore near Mexico Beach, Florida, on Wednesday as one of the most powerful storms in U.S. history."We expect that number to go up dramatically today," said Matthew Marchetti, co-founder of the Houston-based CrowdSource Rescue, adding that hopes were raised by an influx of volunteers on the weekend and the restoration of power in some areas."Volunteers are working side-by-side with first responders. They are cutting holes in roofs. They try to take a picture so we can call the family and tell them we made contact," he said. But as roads were cleared to allow wider searches, the death toll was expected to mount. As of Saturday, authorities were reporting at least 18 deaths in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.Rescue teams, hampered by power and telephone outages, used cadaver dogs, drones and heavy equipment to hunt for people in the rubble.Fontenot, who said he alerts authorities when he finds corpses, has a cadaver dog with his group."When we pulled into Mexico Beach, she was trying to jump out the window because she smelled so many bodies," he said.In Callaway, Florida, an especially hard-hit town, Catholic Christians barbecued hamburgers on Saturday and Scientologists handed out water."I'm homeless," said nursing assistant Carla Covington, 45, who is caring for her mother and two children after their house was destroyed by falling trees. She said it felt good to receive comfort, but was also hard."I'm used to helping people and not asking for help," she said, her voice breaking with emotion.Panama City port worker Josh Jackson, 29, had three cars damaged. The rented home he lived in with his girlfriend and son was wrecked, as were their possessions."I lost everything so I got to start over," he said near a tent in a parking lot where a Geico insurance agent was taking claims. Jackson said he plans to move to a community that was not so badly hit, but was concerned that delays processing his insurance claim might hold him up.Michael ripped most of two walls out from the red-brick St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Panama City, but parishioners spent Saturday handing out food, water and clothes to others."Our whole city was hit. There has got be a way it can recover," said Jo Ann Sutter, 73, a volunteer who was married in the church. "We will."The tropical storm, which grew in less than two days into a Category 4 hurricane, tore apart entire neighborhoods.More than 1,700 search and rescue workers were deployed, including seven swift-water rescue teams and nearly 300 ambulances, Florida Governor Rick Scott's office said.Power and phone service were being slowly restored, with about 236,000 homes and businesses still without power in North Carolina, down from a peak of more than 600,000, said spokesman Keith Acree of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. It could be weeks before power is restored to the most damaged parts of Florida.(Reporting by Rod Nickel; Additional reporting by Devika Krishna Kumar in Port St. Joe, Florida, Barbara Goldberg in New York, and Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Clelia Oziel and Daniel Wallis)

Hurricane Michael's death toll rises to 17: 'We were just surprised by the sheer damage'-[Good Morning America]-MARK OSBORNE-YAHOONEWS-October 14, 2018

Hurricane Michael's death toll climbed to 17 on Friday as search-and-rescue crews continue to sift through the wreckage of once-bustling oceanside cities, like Mexico Beach and Panama City Beach, four days after the storm came ashore.Mexico Beach was largely decimated when Michael made landfall there Wednesday as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph."There are individuals who are deceased. We do not have a count, but we are working to identify them," Miami Fire Chief Joseph Zahralban, leader of a search-and-rescue team in Mexico Beach, told The Associated Press. One body was found in the wreckage of a home in the town on Friday, but teams planned to be back out to comb through the debris on Saturday.Of the 17 killed in the storm, eight were located in Florida. Four people died in Gadsden County and three died in Jackson County, in addition to one recovered so far in Mexico Beach, located in Bay County. Jackson County Emergency Management Agency Director Rodney Andreasen said one of the fatalities in Jackson County occurred when a man was struck by a tree in Alford.FEMA Administrator Brock Long warned on Friday that the death toll will likely climb."I hope we don’t see that climb dramatically, but ... we still haven’t gotten into some of the hardest-hit areas," he said.Ray Jadallah, from the Miami-Dade County Florida Task Force 1, has spent the last two days -- 20 hours a day -- digging through debris in Mexico Beach. He said they are ignoring intact structures and painstakingly going door to door at collapsed buildings, first making noise to alert anyone who could be inside that they are not looters, and then sending in a cadaver dog to search for any bodies. So far, they have located just one dead body, a relative relief for Jadallah, who did the same work following Hurricane Katrina when they found "numerous victims." The destruction in Bay County has largely been from wind damage, as opposed to the flooding during Katrina."We were just surprised by the sheer damage," Jadallah said of arriving in Mexico Beach after Hurricane Michael. "Literally overnight it went from a Category 1 or 2 to a Category 4, almost borderline 5. This type of destruction we haven't seen since I was a kid and that was Hurricane Andrew. This is pretty extensive, the damage. It's going to take some time for them to get back on their feet."Hurricane Andrew killed 44 people in South Florida when it made landfall near Homestead on Aug. 24, 1992.About 285 people defied mandatory evacuation orders in Mexico Beach. Police made two sweeps of the town Wednesday morning and recorded names of everyone who planned to stay, though officials said it is impossible to know who might have left during or immediately after the storm."We don't have a building -- from my understanding the water surge moved it off its foundation," Mexico Beach Police Chief Anthony Kelly told ABC News Friday. "The officers, I finally made accountability of them all today, two days after the fact. ... They're not just my officers, the people that I work with, they're my family."Neighboring Panama City was hit just as hard as Mexico Beach. Many survivors told of hunkering down in their homes as they were torn apart by the 150 mph winds."I decided to stay because my family decided to evacuate, but the pets had to stay here," Panama City resident John Pandullo said. "They didn’t have a place to go. So I wanted to protect them or be there for them in case something like this happened -- and it did."Pandullo rode out the storm in a closet with his dog, Rosie, as the house literally collapsed around him. The roof caved in and the living room and garage of his parents' home no longer exist."It was just so crazy and it’s just so bad," he said. "The dog was right here and she would not leave my side and she would not move. She was shaking extremely bad. And the winds were coming in and the rain was all pouring down on us and basically I waited for over an hour."I managed to make a phone call actually at the peak of the storm, and I was actually able to talk with my parents at the time," Pandullo continued. "And my mom was praying with Jesus on the phone about it the whole time you know -- 'Please let him be alive.'"Five people, including a firefighter, died in Virginia as flooding caused massive damage in an area already hard hit by Hurricane Florence last month. Three people died in North Carolina, all due to falling trees, and a young girl was killed in Georgia when debris was blown through the roof of her grandparents' home. There were still 1.3 million customers without power across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Virginia as of 5 a.m. Saturday.ABC News' Rob Marciano, Will Carr, William Gretsky and Acacia Nunes contributed to this report.

Iran facilitating banned Somali charcoal exports, UN report says-Monitor: False certificates for products generating millions for al-Qaeda-linked group ‘evidently issued through official channels’-By Jennifer Peltz-TOI-OCT 16,18

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Banned charcoal exports from Somalia are thriving, generating millions of dollars a year for al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab — and often passing through Iran to have their origins obscured, according to UN sanctions monitors.Six years after the UN Security Council prohibited exports of prized Somali charcoal to try to choke off a money stream to al-Shabab, an estimated three million bags of the commodity are making their way out of the Horn of Africa country each year, the monitors say in excerpts of a yet-unpublished report seen by The Associated Press. The main destinations are ports in Iran, where the charcoal — already falsely labeled as coming from Comoros, Ghana, or Ivory Coast — is transferred from blue-green bags into white bags labeled “product of Iran,” the report says. The bags are then loaded on Iranian-flagged ships and sent to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with certificates claiming Iran as the charcoal’s country of origin.Iran “has been a weak link in implementation” of the charcoal ban, the monitors said, adding that Tehran largely didn’t cooperate with their investigation. The spokesman for Iran’s mission to the UN, Alireza Miryousefi, told the AP that “Iran fully implements the Security Council-imposed sanctions on Somalia, and accordingly precautionary measures have been taken to prevent their violations. Iran will continue its constructive cooperation with the relevant UN bodies in this regard.”There was no immediate response to inquiries made with the UAE’s UN mission. The monitors credited the UAE with seizing some Somali charcoal but said the Persian Gulf country didn’t “substantively engage” with their questions about the shipments allegedly made through Iran. There was no immediate response on Saturday from Somali officials.Made from acacia trees, charcoal from Somalia is cherished in Gulf nations for the sweet aroma it lends to grilled meats and to tobacco burned in water pipes. It’s also highly valued by the Somalia-based al-Shabab, which effectively taxes the charcoal at checkpoints, according to the UN monitors tasked with assessing compliance with sanctions on Somalia and Eritrea. The monitors say the checkpoint payments yield at least $7.5 million a year for al-Shabab, which a year ago carried out the deadliest terror attack in sub-Saharan Africa’s history. The October 2017 truck bombing killed at least 512 people in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. At a UN-sponsored summit in May on the illicit charcoal exports, Somali officials asked for international cooperation to stop them, saying they fuel insecurity by channeling money to extremists and worsen environmental degradation as trees are cut down in a country already vulnerable to drought, flood and famine.“We need cooperation to implement the UN Security Council [sanctions] resolution and ensure the environmental, economic and human losses that happen because of illegal charcoal trade are curbed,” Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled told the gathering. The excerpts of the monitors’ report seen by the AP don’t specify what individuals or groups may be involved in the illicit charcoal trade, aside from al-Shabab’s de facto tax collectors. The group controls parts of southern and central Somalia and continues to target high-profile areas of the capital with suicide bombings. The report says some of the fake origin certificates for the exported charcoal are outright forgeries, made without any official involvement from the relevant nations. But others, such as the Iran certificates, are “evidently issued through official channels,” the monitors said. The monitors said other countries such as Ghana and Ivory Coast “have allowed charcoal traffickers to exploit weaknesses” in their systems for issuing such certificates and “bear some responsibility” for the patchy enforcement of sanctions.

Iran MP calls to lobby ‘anti-Trump movements’ in US to reduce sanctions’ impact-Heshmatollah Falahat-Pisheh says negotiations with American factions who oppose the president could help alleviate economic pressures-By AFP-TOI-OCT 16,18

TEHRAN — One of Iran’s top foreign policy officials has called for negotiations with “anti-Trump movements” in the US to dampen the impact of sanctions, local media reported Saturday.“America is not Trump,” said Heshmatollah Falahat-Pisheh, a conservative lawmaker who heads parliament’s influential national security and foreign policy commission, according to reformist newspaper Arman.“There is a new diplomatic atmosphere for deescalation with America and it is fitting that Iran follows negotiation diplomacy and lobbying anti-Trump movements in America,” he added. He said this would help alleviate pressure caused by Washington’s “extensive sanction-focused force.”The US pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in May and reimposed punishing sanctions on the country, hoping to pressure Tehran into what President Donald Trump calls a “better deal.”The US is due to complete the re-imposition of sanctions on November 5, targeting Iran’s oil sector and central bank.Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed Trump’s offers to talk as “a dangerous game.”But Mehdi Motaharnia, a Tehran-based political analyst, described Falahat-Pisheh’s proposal as “very meaningful” since it signifies a potential shift in conservatives’ stance on talking with the US.“This comes from a conservative whose party members called (Foreign Minister Mohammad) Javad Zarif a traitor for negotiating with the US,” Motaharnia told reformist daily Hamdeli.“But now we do not see such reactions when the head of national security and foreign policy commission proposes talks,” he added.

Turkish newspaper says Jamal Khashoggi’s slaying recorded on his Apple Watch-Account alleges Saudi operatives tried to delete the audio recordings by using the journalist’s finger; however the devices do not have a fingerprint ID unlock function-By ZEYNEP BILGINSOY and Jon Gambrell-TOI-OCT 15,18

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish officials have an audio recording of the alleged killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi from the Apple Watch he wore when he walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul over a week ago, a pro-government Turkish newspaper reported Saturday. The new claim published by the Sabah newspaper, through which Turkish security officials have leaked much information about the case, didn’t immediately explain how officials there also reportedly have video of Khashoggi’s alleged slaying. However, it put more pressure on Saudi Arabia to explain what happened to Khashoggi, who has written critically about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, after he walked into the consulate October 2. The kingdom has maintained the allegations against it are “baseless,” though an official early Saturday acknowledged for the first time some believe Khashoggi was killed by the kingdom.Authorities recovered the audio from Khashoggi’s iPhone and his iCloud account, the newspaper said. The journalist had given his phones to his fiancée before entering the consulate. The newspaper also alleged Saudi officials tried to delete the recordings first by incorrectly guessing Khashoggi’s PIN on the watch, then later using the journalist’s finger. However, Apple Watches do not have a fingerprint ID unlock function like iPhones. The newspaper did not address that in its report. An Apple Watch can record audio and can sync that later with an iPhone over a Bluetooth connection. The newspaper’s account did not elaborate on how the Apple Watch synced that information to both the phone and Khashoggi’s iCloud account.Turkish officials have not answered queries from The Associated Press about Khashoggi’s Apple Watch.Turkish officials say they believe a 15-member Saudi “assassination squad” killed Khashoggi at the consulate. They’ve also alleged that they have video of the slaying, but not explained how they have it.Turkey has yet to publish any evidence of him being slain, though surveillance footage around the consulate shows a convoy of vehicles with diplomatic license plates leaving the Saudi Consulate for the consul’s home in Istanbul a little under two hours after Khashoggi’s arrival.Saudi Arabia has said it had nothing to do with Khashoggi’s disappearance, without explaining or offering evidence of how the writer left the consulate and disappeared into Istanbul with his fiancée waiting outside. A Saudi-owned satellite news channel has begun referring to the 15-man team as “tourists,” without providing evidence to support the claim. It echoes how Russia has described the men who allegedly carried out the Novichok nerve agent poisonings in Salisbury, England, in March.Early on Saturday, the state-run Saudi Press Agency published a statement from Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud again denying the kingdom’s involvement. This time, however, it acknowledged for the first time that Saudi Arabia was accused of killing Khashoggi.“What has been circulating about orders to kill (Khashoggi) are lies and baseless allegations against the government of the kingdom, which is committed to its principles, rules and traditions and is in compliance with international laws and conventions,” Prince Abdulaziz said.Khashoggi’s disappearance has put pressure on US President Donald Trump, who has enjoyed close relations with the Saudis since entering office. Trump promised to personally call Saudi Arabia’s King Salman soon about “the terrible situation in Turkey.”“We’re going to find out what happened,” Trump pledged Friday when questioned by reporters in Cincinnati where he was headlining a political rally.Separately, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to Khashoggi’s fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who accompanied him to the Saudi consulate, the State Department said Friday. No details of the conversation were released. In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Cengiz said Khashoggi was not nervous when he entered the consulate to obtain paperwork required for their marriage.“He said, ‘See you later my darling,’ and went in,” she told the AP.In written responses to questions by the AP, Cengiz said Turkish authorities had not told her about any recordings and Khashoggi was officially “still missing.”She said investigators were examining his cellphones, which he had left with her.A delegation from Saudi Arabia arrived in Turkey on Friday as part of an investigation into the writer’s disappearance. In a statement posted on Twitter, the Saudis welcomed the joint effort and said the kingdom was keen “to sustain the security and safety of its citizenry, wherever they might happen to be.”Global business leaders also are reassessing their ties with Saudi Arabia, stoking pressure on the Gulf kingdom to explain what happened to Khashoggi.Khashoggi, who was considered close to the Saudi royal family, had become a critic of the current government and Prince Mohammed, the 33-year-old heir apparent who has shown little tolerance for criticism. As a contributor to the Post, Khashoggi has written extensively about Saudi Arabia, including criticism of its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women’s rights activists after the lifting of a ban on women driving. Those policies are all seen as initiatives of the crown prince, who has also presided over a roundup of activists and businessmen.

YOU CAN JUST CALL CANADA THE ZOMBIE JUNKIE COUNTRY AFTER A YEAR OR SO OF DRUGS LEGALIZED. JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE.

Canada makes final preparations before cannabis becomes legal-AFP Relax News-October 16, 2018-

From October 17, Canadians will be allowed to grow, possess and consume marijuana for recreational purposes.Canada will soon become the second country in the world to legalize cannabis -- with the provinces left to work out the details of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's landmark measure. From October 17, Canadians will be allowed to grow, possess and consume marijuana for recreational purposes -- five years after Uruguay passed pioneering legislation on the issue.Derivative products such as edibles, cosmetics and e-cigarette products containing pot will not be allowed until 2019.But nonetheless, legalization is expected to boost the Canadian economy, generating $816 million to $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter -- without taking into account the black market, which is expected to account for a quarter of all joints smoked in Canada, according to Statistics Canada.A $400 million tax revenue windfall is forecast as a result -- with the provinces, municipalities and federal government all getting a slice. In total, Statistics Canada says 5.4 million Canadians will buy cannabis in legal dispensaries in 2018 -- about 15 percent of the population. 4.9 million already smoke. And the world will be watching how Canada gets on."There is a lot of interest from our allies in what we're doing," Trudeau, who has admitted to smoking cannabis himself a handful of times, told AFP in May."They recognize that Canada is being daring... and recognize that the current regime (of prohibition) does not work, that it's not preventing young people from having easy access to cannabis."- Provinces decide -Preparations are underway ahead of the reform, promised by Trudeau's Liberal Party, with businesses and local authorities forced to review their rules and regulations. That's because even though the cannabis ban, in force since 1923, was overturned by the federal government, how legalization plays out in practice has been left to Canada's 10 provinces and three territories to decide.Several have already said they will not fully implement the law. For example, even though federal law will permit each household to grow up to four cannabis plants, central Manitoba and Quebec in the east say they will ban it -- and go all the way to the Supreme Court over the matter.Like with alcohol and tobacco, the question of legal age also falls to the provinces. Nineteen seems to be the standard, but it is 18 in Alberta -- while Quebec, whose new government will enter office the day after legalization, wants to raise the age to 21.With regards to sales, some provinces such as Quebec will implement a public monopoly -- while others, including Ontario and Nova Scotia, have decided to trust the market to the private sector. As for law enforcement, federal police will be ordered to abstain for 28 days before working, as will police in Toronto.Officers in Montreal, however, are simply asked to not show up to work high.Another issue for the provinces to mull over is open consumption, with Montreal deciding to impose the same rules as those for tobacco -- while people in other provinces will have to light up at home.
