Israel struggles to contain spreading violence; 6 Palestinians reported killed in border clash-The Canadian PressBy Fares Akram And Ian Deitch, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – OCT 9,15-YAHOONEWS
GAZA, Palestinian Territories - Unrest that erupted several weeks ago at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site spread Friday to Gaza in the form of deadly border clashes with Palestinian protesters, as Israeli security forces struggled to contain a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers. For the first time since the current violence began, clashes broke out along the Gaza border after Palestinians in the territory ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the frontier. Six Palestinians were killed and a dozen were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said "More than a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone engaging the forces at the security fence. Rioters reached the security fence- hurled a grenade, rocks and rolled burning tires at Israeli forces ... threatening to breach the fence and storm the adjacent communities." It said troops fired warning shots and then fired at main instigators to prevent their advance.Recent days have seen a series of attacks by young Palestinians wielding household items like kitchen knives, screwdrivers and even a vegetable peeler. The youths had no known links to armed groups who have targeted Israeli soldiers and civilians at random, complicating security efforts. The violence, including the first apparent revenge attack by an Israeli, raised fears of the unrest spiraling further out of control. The unpredictability and brutality of the assaults, coupled with the young age of some of the attackers, have shocked Israelis and raised fears a new Palestinian intifada — or uprising — could be underway. In Jerusalem, a Palestinian stabbed and wounded a 14-year-old Israeli with a vegetable peeler Friday before being arrested. In another attack near the entrance of Kiryat Arba, a West Bank settlement, a Palestinian was shot dead by a police officer after he attacked him with a knife and tried to seize his weapon, police said.In northern Israel, a 29-year-old Arab-Israeli woman was shot and wounded while trying to stab people at a bus station in the town of Afula, where another stabbing had taken place the day before, police said.Gaza-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh applauded the recent Palestinian stabbing attacks across Israel at a speech at Friday prayers, labeling it as an intifada.Israeli officials have said the violence is not on that scale for now, but rather is of the kind unleashed periodically over the decades. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called it a "terror wave." He and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas have tried to lower tensions in recent days but both appear unable to contain the unrest. Veteran commentator Ben Caspit told Channel 10 that Israel is on the "seam line" between the violence spreading and containment. One of the challenges is that there is no clear identifiable enemy, with about half of "the lone-wolf" attackers coming from east Jerusalem and the rest from the West Bank. The acts are independent, spontaneous moments of rage, he said, noting the stabbings with the vegetable peeler and one involving a screwdriver the day before.Household items are used as weapons because guns can be harder to get for Palestinians unaffiliated with militant groups. Not much can be done from an intelligence agency point of view to prevent spontaneous attacks by an individual who "decides to take a screwdriver and stab the first Jew that passes by," said Yuval Diskin, Israel's former internal security chief, in an interview with Channel 2 TV.Video on social media Friday showed the moments when Israeli security forces shot and wounded an Arab woman at the Afula bus station. Police said the woman, who wore a long robe and Islamic headscarf, had pulled a knife to stab a soldier and posed an "immediate threat."The video showed the woman surrounded by several members of the security forces with their guns drawn. Israeli media said security personnel called to her in Arabic and Hebrew multiple times to put the weapon down and that she had waved it while yelling, "Death to police." The police later released video of a long-bladed kitchen knife they said she had used. The woman was shot in her lower body and treated at a hospital.A Palestinian stabbing attack had occurred in the same city a day before.Protests spread late Friday to northern Israel where scores of people from the country's Arab minority clashed with officers in protests linked to the unrest with the Palestinians.Arab citizens make up some 20 per cent of Israel's population. They enjoy full citizenship rights but have long complained of discrimination in housing, jobs and other areas of society. They often identify with Palestinian nationalism. The latest unrest began about three weeks ago, when Palestinians repeatedly barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City, hurling stones, firebombs and fireworks at police. It was fueled by Palestinian allegations that Israel plans to change the delicate arrangement at the hilltop compound, sacred to both Muslims and Jews. Israel has adamantly denied the allegations and accused Palestinian leaders of inciting the violence and spreading lies over the shrines in east Jerusalem. Abbas gave a hard-line speech at the U.N. last month, saying Israelis desecrate the holy site with their "dirty feet."Non-Muslim visitors are only allowed to enter the site at specific hours and are banned by police from praying there. Many Muslims view these visits as a provocation and accuse Jewish extremists of plotting to take over the site. Israel has promised to ensure the delicate arrangement at the site and insists it will not allow the status quo to be changed. The fate of the hilltop site is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is revered to Jews as the Temple Mount, site of the two biblical Jewish temples, and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, where they believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. The attacks initially were confined to east Jerusalem and the West Bank — both territories captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war and claimed by the Palestinians for a future state — but spread to Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities this week. What began as Palestinians throwing rocks and firebombs at passing cars and police has morphed into a deadly shooting and knife attacks by Palestinians on Israeli civilians and soldiers. In what appeared to be the first revenge attack amid the violence, an Israeli man stabbed and wounded four Arabs in the southern Israeli city of Dimona, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. After his arrest, the assailant said he acted in retaliation for the numerous Palestinian attacks, Israeli media reported. The attacker is a "mentally ill man," said Dimona Mayor Beni Bitton, telling Channel 10 that two of the victims worked for City Hall, and that passers-by quickly provided first aid to the wounded Arabs. Netanyahu "strongly condemned the harming of innocent Arabs," saying that anyone who resorts to violence will be brought to justice. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby referred to the Palestinian attacks on Israelis as "acts of terror." Kirby said he had no details on the Israeli attack when asked. It was mostly quiet Friday at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israeli police banned men under 45 from the compound while women of all ages entered freely. The age limit has been imposed intermittently because authorities believe that younger Palestinians are mostly involved in the violence.Five Palestinians have been killed while carrying out attacks against Israelis over the past week, while another three Palestinians were killed in protests and clashes in the West Bank. The Red Crescent medical service says over 500 Palestinians have been wounded in violent protests in the West Bank since the weekend, including about 100 from live fire.Last week, Palestinians shot two Israelis to death in front of their children in the West Bank. In a separate incident, Palestinians killed two Israeli men and wounded a mother and toddler in Jerusalem.__Associated Press writer Mathew Lee in Washington contributed to this report.
Woman at heart of niqab debate granted citizenship in private ceremony-The Canadian PressBy The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – OCT 9,15-YAHOONEWS
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The woman who won the legal right to wear a niqab during her citizenship oath has officially become Canadian.Zunera Ishaq's lawyer Lorne Waldman says the 29-year-old was granted citizenship today in a private ceremony in Mississauga, west of Toronto.Media photos show her taking the oath wearing a floral-patterned niqab. She had previously said she wished to obtain citizenship in time to vote in the federal election on Oct. 19.Ishaq's case has proved a polarizing issue during the election – one she says has tarnished Canadians' views of her fellow Muslims. The controversy stems from a 2011 government policy banning new Canadians from wearing face coverings while taking their citizenship oaths.Ishaq refused to do so on religious grounds, and her efforts to challenge the new rules ended up before the courts. The Federal Court of Canada found the policy unlawful in February, and the Federal Court of Appeal recently upheld the ruling. The government has refused to back down, however, saying the issue will now be heard before the Supreme Court of Canada.Prime Minister Stephen Harper has consistently argued that showing one's face at the moment of becoming a Canadian citizen is consistent with Canada's values and a necessary measure to ensure national security.
AP Exclusive: Tally shows Saudi hajj crush deadliest tragedy to ever strike annual pilgrimage-The Canadian PressBy Jon Gambrell, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – OCT 10,15-YAHOONEWS
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - One survivor of last month's crush and stampede at the hajj in Saudi Arabia recalled seeing so many bodies that he couldn't tell how many there were. The Associated Press sought to answer that question, arriving at a death toll of at least 1,470. That made the Sept. 24 disaster the deadliest accident ever at the annual pilgrimage. And hundreds remain missing. The AP count is 701 higher than Saudi Arabia's official tally of 769 killed and 934 injured in the Sept. 24 disaster in Mina, a few miles from the holy city of Mecca.Saudi officials, who could not be immediately reached for comment Friday, previously have said their tally remains accurate, although an investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing. Authorities have not updated their casualty toll since Sept. 26.The hesitancy to acknowledge a higher toll may reflect the leadership's reflex to clamp down on information as it struggles with multiple pressures. The kingdom is dealing with a war in Yemen, Russia's entry into the Syrian conflict and low oil prices that are straining the budget — and the hajj tragedy is already opening it up to sharp criticism from opponents, particularly Iran. The previous deadliest-ever incident at the annual hajj happened in 1990, when a stampede killed 1,426 people. Stampedes and crushes are a major danger at the hajj since it attracts more than 2 million pilgrims a year, all moving simultaneously in close quarters through a number of rituals over the course of five days. The AP figure comes from statements and officials' comments from 19 of the over 180 countries that sent citizens to the five-day annual pilgrimage.Authorities have said the crush and stampede occurred when two waves of pilgrims converged on a narrow road, causing hundreds of people to suffocate or be trampled to death.Mohammed Awad of Sudan told the AP at the time that he and his 56-year-old father were separated in the pushing and shoving. The 36-year-old pilgrim later found him alive under at least 10 bodies."You can't count how many bodies there were. They were stacked high," Awad said.Iran says it had 465 pilgrims killed, while Egypt lost 165 and Indonesia 120.Others include India with 101, Nigeria with 99, Pakistan with 93, Mali with 70, Bangladesh with 63, Senegal with 54, Benin with 51, Cameroon with 42, Ethiopia with 31, Sudan with 30, Morocco with 27, Algeria with 25, Ghana with 12, Chad with 11, Kenya with eight and Turkey with three. Hundreds remain missing, according to these countries.Any disaster at the five-day hajj, a pillar of Islamic faith, could be seen as a blow to the kingdom's cherished stewardship of Islam's holiest sites. This season saw two tragedies — the stamped and the Sept. 11 collapse of a crane at Mecca's Grand Mosque that killed 111 people.Shiite-led Iran, the kingdom's top rival in the region, has blamed the disaster on the kingdom's "mismanagement" of the pilgrimage. The Islamic Republic also has called for an independent body to take over the hajj.Experts say there's no way that will happen. Patronage of Mecca and Medina is one cornerstone of the Al Saud family's legitimacy. Among King Salman's titles — as it was for his predecessors — is the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, referring to sites in the two cities."The Saudis are not for a nanosecond going to entertain any proposals to share management of the hajj with other states," said Hani Sabra, the head of the Middle East practice at the Eurasia Group. Still, he said, the hajj deaths "reinforces a view that at this moment, Saudi Arabia looks weak."The delay in announcing new figures may come from wanting not wanting to fuel more criticism from Iran, or because of the kingdom's traditional top-down governance.Despite Iran's sharp rhetoric over the deaths, other countries have been far more muted. That is likely due to Saudi Arabia's powerful influence, including years of patronage using its oil wealth, and because the kingdom can set the quota of pilgrims each country can send to the hajj."This is really unfortunate that in an event where people are dead, the families don't have any kind of transparency," said Madawi al-Rasheed, a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science's Middle East Center."Unfortunately for these Muslim countries, they are at a weaker position," she said, "and a lot of them worry about future pilgrimages, where they might not get the full quota allocated to them."That kind of hesitancy about criticism has been seen in Pakistan. Earlier this week, Pakistan's Electronic Media Regulatory Authority sent text messages to executives at independent television networks, warning them that criticism of Saudi Arabia could be viewed as illegal under the country's constitutional prohibitions on affecting relations with "friendly countries."But Saudi Arabia will maintain its "monopoly" over the hajj, even though it will likely face larger and larger crowds as time goes on, said Jon B. Alterman, a senior vice-president at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies." The challenge is not so much that it happened but how do you respond?" Alterman said. "Saudi Arabia has a consistent problem developing a managerial culture. Decisions are kept very, very high in the system and people aren't always held accountable for their failures. There have been a lot of signs over the last 20 to 30 years of trying to change that culture, but it's very hard."___Associated Press writers Munir Ahmed in Islamabad, Mohamed Osman in Khartoum, Sudan, Aya Batrawy in Dubai and Maram Mazen in Cairo contributed to this report.____Follow Jon Gambrell on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jongambrellap .

Thousands of students vote at MUN polling station-CBC – OCT 10,15-YAHOONEWS
Election day is still more than a week away, but thousands of students in Newfoundland and Labrador have already cast their ballots. The Canadian Federation of Students says that more than 2,500 students voted in the advance polling station at Memorial University."It was really exciting to hear that students were really engaged and connected and excited to cast a ballot for the first time," said Travis Perry, chairperson with the Canadian Federation of Students. This is the first time Elections Canada has set up pop-up returning offices on campus. MUN was one of 29 college and university campuses across Canada participating in the pilot project. From Monday to Thursday, students queued up in droves, with lineups often stretching far out the polling station door.Miles Alexander, an 18-year-old student from St. George's, said he was excited to vote for the first time."I think it's important for students to vote in general. It's good to have that young population getting involved in politics early," he said."The resources are available, clearly. If you can, do it, why not?"More than 42,000 students voting across Canada-According to the Canada's chief electoral officer, more than 42,000 students across Canada voted in the first three days the poll stations were on campuses. Nick Baldwin from Carbonear said he hasn't voted in the past few elections, but recently realized it was time for him to get engaged."I haven't voted in the past couple and realized I had started complaining about it. I figured maybe I shouldn't be complaining if I wasn't voting," said Baldwin."If you're going to complain about anything you don't really have a right to complain if you don't go out and try to make a difference."Students like Haley Moreland from Saskatchewan could vote for the representatives in their home riding, regardless of where they were from."I think it's really important with this election," said Moreland."I'm starting to go into the workforce and I'm feeling a lot more the effects of the government." Youth voter turnout historically low-In the 2011 federal election, there was a 38.8 per cent turnout for youth between the ages of 16 and 24. In contrast, voter turnout was 75.1 per cent for people ages 65 to 74.Perry said he thinks more young people will show up to the polls this year because they're frustrated with the current political situation."Students are fed up with the state of our country and are looking for a federal party to step up to the plate. Unfortunately we're not seeing any of the political parties put student issues front and centre and talk about the big picture," he said."I think that's why students are going to show up to the polls this year, because they're tired of a government that's not doing work for them."Elections Canada also set up two temporary stations at 13 aboriginal friendship centres and two urban YMCAs.There will be another polling station on the MUN campus on October 19, however it will only be available to students voting in the riding of St. John's East.
