Gunman kills 12 in Denver shooting at "Batman" movie

DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) - A masked gunman killed 12 people at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in a suburb of Denver early on Friday, sparking pandemonium when he hurled a gas canister into the auditorium and opened fire on moviegoers.About fifty others including children were wounded in the attack on the showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in a mall in the Aurora suburb, some of whom were treated for the effects of tear gas, hospital officials said."This is a horrific event," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told a news conference, adding that a suspect was taken into custody in the parking lot behind the theater. He had initially put the death toll at 14, but a spokesman later told NBC the toll had been revised to 12.Police said the Aurora gunman had appeared at the front of the theater during the movie and released a canister which let out a hissing sound before gunfire erupted.Dozens of police were at the scene, and the authorities evacuated the area while they checked for any explosive devices. They said there was no evidence of a second gunman.Wendy Post, who was waiting to be reunited with her daughter at a local high school following the shooting, said her daughter told her the shooting erupted just minutes after the film began."She saw the exit door open and something was thrown across the screen, and then shooting started," she told local NBC affiliate 9News television. "It was chaos."President Barack Obama, who was notified of the shooting on Friday morning by his homeland security adviser, John Brennan, urged Americans to "stand together" with the people of Aurora in the hours and days to come."Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time," Obama said in a statement."As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family," he added.Colorado has suffered mass killings in the past. Police spokesman Frank Fania said the suspect was thought to be in his early 20s. He was carrying a knife, a rifle and a handgun when arrested, and one other gun was recovered from the theater. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest.

"He did not resist, he did not put up a fight," Fania said.
Police said the suspect's apartment building had been evacuated and police were looking for explosives there after the suspect made statements about explosives in his residence.CNN quoted one witness as saying he saw a "guy slowly making his way up the stairs and firing, picking random people." Another witness said the gunman opened fire during a shoot-out scene in the movie, leading to confusion.Chandler Brannon, 25, who had been watching the movie with his girlfriend, said that about 20 minutes into the movie he saw a smoke bomb go off and heard what sounded like fireworks. He later realized they were a rapid volley of gunshots.
"I told my girlfriend to just play dead," he told Reuters, adding that he never got a full view of the gunman. "All I could see was a silhouette."Another witness told CNN he heard 10-20 shots and what he described as little explosions. "Shortly after that we heard people screaming. Then they came on PA system and said everyone needed to get out," the witness said."As soon as we got out, there were people running around and screaming." He said friends had told him the gunman was wearing a gas mask.One man told an NBC affiliate that he was in the adjacent theater watching another screening of the Batman movie when he heard gunshots and the theater filled with thick, choking smoke.He saw bullets holes in the wall, and some people in his theater were wounded. Grain prices set records as U.S. drought, food worries spread

CHICAGO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Grain prices pushed to record highs on Thursday as scattered rains in U.S. Midwest did little to douse fears that the worst drought in half a century will not end soon or relieve worries around the world about higher food prices.Government forecasters did not rule out that the drought in the U.S. heartland could last past October, continuing what has been the hottest half-year on record."There's a greater chance that there is no relief possible or in sight" for the U.S. Midwest, Dan Collins of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center said on Thursday.

More than half the United States was experiencing moderate drought or worse this week, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report issued on Thursday.More than 70 percent of the Midwest Corn Belt was in some stage of drought in the week ended July 17, up from 63 percent a week earlier. It adds up to the worst drought conditions in the United States since at least 1956, climate experts said."We don't have a reason for saying it's going to improve," Kelly Helm Smith of the National Drought Mitigation Center told a briefing on Thursday, adding that warmer conditions in the coming months might well exceed current levels.

CROPS PLOWED UNDER
That is bad news for farmers and consumers, with corn, soybeans and wheat in the United States -- the largest world exporter of those key crops -- baking in fields, losing yield potential daily or being plowed under for insurance claims.Corn for September delivery at the Chicago Board of Trade set a record high of $8.16-3/4 a bushel, while soybeans for August delivery also set a record high of $17.49. Wheat for September rose 4 percent at $9.35 and set a four-year high.The knock-on effect of such soaring prices was already being felt around the world, where drought has also hit other grain exporters who are starting to cancel previous sales and leave hungry countries in the Middle East and elsewhere scrambling."A lot of buyers waited in the hope that rain in the U.S. and east Europe would cool prices," one grain exporter said. "But this is not happening and the U.S. drought is not over."The two big questions in the U.S. Corn Belt -- how low the harvest and how high the prices -- were still unanswered. But conditions were worsening as corn was failing to pollinate and soybeans, planted later, face their key growth stage in stress.Iowa and Illinois, which together produce about a third of all U.S. corn and soybeans, continue to bake."The soil moisture in Iowa is pretty much gone so there's not much to keep crops going. Even if temperatures went down 5 degrees and rainfall increased 50 percent for the rest of this month, it might slow the rate of decline but it's not going to reverse the decline in crop conditions and the ultimate yield," said Harry Hillaker, Iowa state climatologist. "There's not much left of the Corn Belt that's in good shape."In Williamsport, Ohio, Scott Metzger, 37, said it rained for about 45 minutes on his farm on Thursday and according to his rain gauge he got 1-3/10 inch of rain. But since May 13, he said, the farm has only had 2.1 inches of rain."This has been my toughest year of farming so far," he said, saying his corn crop was "finished" because it never pollinated.
WARMEST HALF-YEAR IN HISTORY

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that the January-June period was the hottest half-year on record in the United States, with 29 states seriously affected.Around the world, last month was the fourth-warmest June, NOAA experts said. Temperatures on land were the warmest ever recorded, while ocean temperatures were the 10th warmest. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hotter-than-normal temperatures are expected through October over most of the contiguous 48 U.S. states, with below-average precipitation for Midwest areas already hit by the worst drought in a half century, government forecasters said on Thursday.Experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration did not rule out drought that could continue past October, and they noted that there was a chance of an El Nino pattern that could mean more excessive heat and dry conditions by the end of 2012.After the hottest half-year on record in the United States, hotter, drier conditions from the Southwest, through the Midwest and across the East Coast from Florida to Maine are forecast to continue through October, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said at a briefing.Drought hit 29 U.S. states, with Texas feeling the heaviest impact, followed by Colorado, Missouri, Florida, New Mexico, Arkansas, Indiana and Hawaii.Nationally, last month was the 14th warmest June on record, with 170 temperature records broken or tied. Only the Pacific Northwest had near-average temperatures.The record-high temperatures were unusual for June; record-breaking heat more frequently occurs later in the summer, according to Jake Crouch of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center.More than 53 percent of the area of all of the United States -- including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico -- was experiencing moderate or worse drought this week, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday.That set a record for the third consecutive week, making it the most widespread drought in the 12 years the government has been mapping this data. Another gauge of U.S. drought distress came in the form of voluntary reports, which rose from fewer than 50 in January to over 300 in the first half of July.Smith included one such report from an unnamed farmer and rancher in Colorado: "With record-setting high temps. and several days of 108 to 113 degree temps, irrigation water shutting off and the dry hot wind, conditions of pasture have turned from bad to worse. Ranchers are now calling in with reports of finding dead antelope fawns in the shade of cedar posts, very sad situation. Syrian forces stretched, intelligence chief dies

A total of 310 people, including 98 security personnel, were killed on Thursday, the Observatory said, the highest daily death toll so far. The reports could not be confirmed. The Syrian government restricts access by international journalists.

"I saw three bodies in one car. Others said dozens of security men and shabbiha (pro-Assad militia) lay dead or wounded along Khaled bin al-Walid street, before ambulances took them away."A resident who toured much of Damascus late on Thursday said the Interior Ministry at the main Marjeh Square had a fraction of its usual contingent of guards still in place.Shelling could be heard on the southwestern suburb of Mouadamiyeh from hills overlooking the city where the Fourth Division, commanded by Assad's brother Maher, is based, he said.Syrian television showed the bodies of about 20 men in T-shirts and jeans with weapons lying at their sides, sprawled across a road in the capital's Qaboun district. It described them as members of the "so-called Free Army" killed in battle.The next few days will be critical in determining whether Assad's government can recover from the devastating blow of the bombing on Wednesday of Assad's inner circle which destroyed its aura of invulnerability.The Russian ambassador to France said he believed Assad had signaled readiness to step down when he accepted a recent international declaration which foresaw a transition towards a more democratic Syria. Russian envoy to France: Assad ready to step down

PARIS (AP) — Russia's ambassador to France said Friday that he believes Syria's president is ready to step down "in a civilized way." But the Syrian government immediately denied it.Alexander Orlov said that Bashar Assad's acceptance of an international agreement in June for a transition toward a more democratic regime, and his subsequent step of naming a representative to negotiate the transition, meant that he was prepared to give up leadership.The country is sliding into even further chaos, with fighting around the capital Damascus intensifying two days after the inner circle of Assad's regime was hit by an attack that killed three top Syrian defense officials."Personally ... I think it will be difficult for him to stay in office given everything that's happened," Orlov said in an interview with Radio France Internationale.Orlov spoke a day after Moscow vetoed a Western-backed U.N. resolution aimed at pressuring President Bashar Assad's government to end the war. Ratification of 'Law of the Sea' advances world government

Ratification of the United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) would be a giant step toward World Government. The principal purposes of LOST are to transfer technology and wealth from developed to underdeveloped nations and to increase exposure to international litigation. Consider two quotations
from LOST's Preamble:

"...achievement of these goals will contribute to the realization of a just and equitable international economic order which takes into account the interests and needs of mankind as a whole and, in particular, the special interests and needs of developing countries,"".the seabed and ocean floor and the subsoil thereof, beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, as well as its resources, are the common heritage of mankind, the exploration and exploitation of which shall be carried out for the benefit of mankind as a whole,"Oceans and seas cover 70% of the earth's surface. In the decades and centuries to come, the seabeds of this vast area - more than two-thirds of our planet - will become an immense source of oil, natural gas, and rare and essential minerals. If we do not ratify LOST, America will be free in the future - as in the past - to use our advanced technology, our enterprising spirit, and our national vigor to develop the seabeds of these waters as we choose.  But if we ratify LOST, many aspects of our exploration, development, and production of these resources will be controlled by the bureaucracy established by this treaty.  And we will be required to pay LOST many billions, possibly trillions, of dollars in fees, royalties, and profit-sharing.This Senate vote will determine our nation's future: continued American sovereignty or subordination to global governance. The international authority created by LOST is virtually limitless, covering executive, legislative, and judicial functions. The treaty itself has 320 articles and six annexes. It creates: an International Seabed Authority with a Council, an Assembly, and a Secretariat; an Economic Planning Commission and a Legal and Technical Commission; the Enterprise, which governs those areas which - to us today - are international waters; and a Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and a Seabed Disputes Chamber as judicial bodies.Proponents of LOST argue that the U.S. "must have a seat at the table" in order to shape future decisions about two-thirds of the world. If we ratify, there will be 163 members of the Assembly (the ultimate governing body). We will have one vote. The other 162 voters have three important characteristics: they are not Americans, we did not elect them to decide our future, and many have acted inimically to us on countless occasions. We have no veto power, and there is no appeal. If we ratify we must obey LOST's provisions or be tried in their courts for our purported failures and
violations. And since a ratified treaty becomes the law of the land, even our own courts could be used to enforce LOST's judgments.  If we do not ratify, this global government's rulings have no effect upon us; we can act as we choose.  "A seat at the table" is not an opportunity; it's a guarantee
of disaster.

Proponents of LOST also argue that the above problems were resolved by the subsequent "1994 Agreement."  Not so. None of the tough issues was corrected. Additionally, since many LOST member states refuse to sign this Agreement, and since LOST article 309 does not allow reservations or
exceptions to the treaty, we should certainly not ratify while in this legal limbo.Additionally, proponents of LOST tell you that ratification will help the U.S. counter Russian claims in the Arctic and Chinese claims in the South China Sea. Wrong. LOST provides no help.In the 1950s the U.S. Navy played a major role in successfully negotiating international conventions on all issues of major concern, such as the territorial sea, contiguous zone, continental shelf, and high seas. Nothing more is needed. Our Navy is well able to protect our national interests without ratification; and in fact ratification will almost certainly lead to future serious restrictions on naval activities and operations.In summary, ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty is a national issue of the greatest importance. Responsible individuals can be found on either side: Those who favor ratification believe in progressive subordination of American sovereignty to World Government. A recent CNBC clip in which financial analysts admit to viewers that America is under the control of a group of central bankers who are building a world government is a damning insight into how the establishment has dispensed with any pretense of trying to hide their agenda as it is finalized.During the video, the host asks guests, “Do we all work for central bankers – is this global governance at last – is it one world – the central bankers in charge….aren’t we all just living and dying for what the central banks do?”“To answer your question, we are absolutely slaves to central banks,” responds the guest.“We beholden to what central bankers and policy makers do rather than the fundamentals in the economy,” adds another.This is just one of a deluge of examples where it is now being thrown in our faces that a banking elite is building a world government at the expense of the American people.From treating the issue as a “conspiracy theory” for decades, the establishment is now tearing away the veil in an effort to force Americans to blithely accept what has been planned all along.A global government is now being forcefully pushed as the “solution” to all manner of problems, but specifically in relation to financial crises. We are being brainwashed to accept the premise that centralized power in the hands of a tiny elite is the only recourse, and that a one world currency is inevitable.At the height of the last economic crisis, Bilderberg member and Financial Times columnist Gideon Rachman argued that “everything is in place” for a dictatorial world government to be imposed by a technocratic elite.Rachman’s 2008 call for authoritarian technocrats to be put in charge of the global economy in preparation for the official birth of global government is now well on its way to completion, with the economies of France, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Greece, along with the IMF and the European Central Bank, all under Goldman Sachs banker occupation.These technocrats have not been bashful in openly announcing what they are doing.Upon his selection to become EU President in 2009, Herman Van Rompuy announced that the financial crisis and efforts to combat global warming were designed to precede “the global management of our planet.” He also declared 2009 to be “the first year of global governance.”In the same year, Van Rompuy was joined by the Pope who also called for a “world political authority” to manage the global economy.World Bank President and Bilderberg elitist Robert Zoellick also openly admitted the plan to eliminate national sovereignty and impose a global government during a speech on the eve of the G20 summit.Calls for a one world currency to be a key component of global governance have been consistent.In 2000 speech, member of the executive board of the ECB, Sirkka Hämäläinen stated, “In conclusion, I should like to come back to Paul Volcker’s prophecy. He might be right, and we might one day have a single world currency. Maybe European integration, in the same way as any other regional integration, could be seen as a step towards the ideal situation of a fully integrated world.”

In a 2010 speech to the CFR, former president of the ECB Jean-Claude Trichet made it clear that the Global Economy Meeting (GEM), which meets at the BIS (Bank of International Settlements) headquarters in Basel would “become the prime group for global governance among central banks.”Trichet added that the BIS meetings were ensuring that “the system is moving decisively towards genuine global governance.”

Trichet went on to define how global governance would operate.“There are numerous definitions of global governance. In the economic and financial sphere I will propose that global governance comprehends not only the constellation of supranational institutions – including the international financial institutions – but also the informal groupings that have progressively emerged at the global level. Those informal forums (G7, G10, G20, etc.) are key in improving global coordination in all the areas where decision making processes remain national – whether in helping to work out agreed prudential standards and codes or to facilitate where appropriate, the coordination of economic macro-policies.”Numerous other members of the political establishment have openly expressed the agenda to create global government. not only in response to the financial crisis but also as an answer to man-made climate change.In 2009, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted that carbon taxes levied in the name of abating global warming would be collected by a world body.“We will establish a global governance structure to monitor and manage the implementation of this,” he stated.In a New York Times editorial entitled “We Can Do It,” Ki-moon also wrote that efforts to impose restrictions on CO2 emissions, “Must include an equitable global governance structure.”Fellow globalist and environmentalist David De Mayer Rothschild also disclosed the agenda for global governancein an interview with Bloomberg news.“It’s past the point of talking. We know historically that the global governance sort of agenda to these issues is very hard to… with all the best intentions it’s very hard to actually activate.” Rothschild noted.Similarly, Al Gore said in a 2009 speech that attempts to regulate CO2 emissions would be driven through “global governance and global agreements.”A 2010 UN blueprint for putting the organization back at the forefront of global governance alarmingly revealed the agenda to re-brand global warming as “overpopulation” as a means of dismantling the middle classes while using “global redistribution of wealth” and increased immigration to reinvigorate the pursuit of a one world government.Bureaucrats at the 2011 UN Climate Summit in Durban outlined plans for the most draconian, harebrained and madcap climate change treaty ever produced, under which the west would be mandated to respect “the rights of Mother Earth” by paying a “climate debt” which would act as a slush fund for bankrolling an all-powerful world government.Earlier this year a Scientific American article entitled Effective World Government Will Be Needed to Stave Off Climate Catastrophe argued that global management of the planet was the only means of combating global warming.Although the agenda for global government is now bearing its teeth with little regard for subtleness or stealth, the following quotes stretching back over the last several decades prove that the plan has been long in the works.“Today America would be outraged if UN troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. U.S.-backed Syrian Opposition Linked to Bilderberg, CFR, Goldman Sachs & George Soros

The foreign-financed armed rebellion and the Western-backed opposition to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad has been falsely portrayed as a spontaneous uprising of “democracy” activists since violence first broke out more than a year ago. But according to a recent investigation published in the U.K. Guardian, top figures in the “regime-change” coalition — most notably the Syrian National Council (SNC) — have intimate links to the highest ranks of the world elite: the shadowy Bilderberg conference, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Goldman Sachs megabank, billionaire financier George Soros, and, of course, the U.S. government. It is all out in the open, too.On top of that, the report suggests that much of the war propaganda being used to promote international military intervention and “revolution” is actually slick public-relations gimmicks financed by large tax-exempt foundations and even the governments being asked to intervene. And there is big money behind the spread of the disinformation. Consider the seemingly never-ending reports about “civilian massacres” blamed on the Syrian tyrant — almost always from anonymous “activists” — that continually prove to be exaggerated, fabricated, or even perpetrated by the Western-backed rebels themselves, and then blamed on the regime.The most recent example occurred just last week when anonymous “activists” prompted the global press and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to claim that over 200 civilians, including women and children, had been massacred, only to be contradicted later — even by a UN investigation and “opposition activists” themselves. What actually happened, as The New American originally reported even before the UN probe, was apparently a battle between armed Western-backed “rebels” and the dictatorship’s military forces that resulted in some deaths of combatants.So who are the “opposition activists” in reality? “The mainstream news media have, in the main, been remarkably passive when it comes to Syrian sources: billing them simply as ‘official spokesmen’ or ‘pro-democracy campaigners’ without, for the most part, scrutinizing their statements, their backgrounds or their political connections,” observed Charlie Skelton in his detailed and well-sourced article for the Guardian, noting that many of the most frequently quoted sources are openly connected to what he calls “the Anglo-American opposition creation business.” As The New American documented a year ago, many of the Syrian “opposition” groups and leaders were being showered with American taxpayer dollars to undermine the regime long before the “Arab Spring” even erupted.Aside from the “anonymous” sources, there are a few opposition players that seem to be doing virtually all of the accusing for the establishment press — not to mention making most of the demands for more “humanitarian” war. The first one cited by Skelton is Bassma Kodmani, one of the top leaders in the “Syrian National Council” — a foreign-based umbrella group for some opposition factions, including the extremist Muslim Brotherhood, which is widely touted by the establishment press and Western governments as the primary group representing the “people” of Syria. And Kodmani, who continues to loudly demand international military intervention to oust the Assad regime, has open links to the elite.Consider, for example, that she was at this year’s Bilderberg conference in Chantilly, Virginia — a secret yearly meeting of the top global power brokers from media, finance, government, military, intelligence, business, and more, that has come under criticism from across the political spectrum. Kodmani was also at the 2008 Bilderberg conference, though she was listed as French then. Now, for reasons that are not entirely clear, her official affiliation is listed only as “international.”Before Bilderberg, Kodmani was a former official with the massive Ford Foundation, an organization that has also come under fire for its controversial efforts to remake the world. More recently, she was serving as the executive director of the “Arab Reform Initiative” for the powerful U.S.-based globalist outfit known as the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) — yet another controversial elite group that is often faced with severe criticism for its hostility to national sovereignty, as well as American traditions of self-governance and individual liberty. The CFR membership roster includes many of the most influential figures in U.S. politics, business, military, and more.

“At this level, the worlds of banking, diplomacy, industry, intelligence, and the various policy institutes and foundations all mesh together, and there, in the middle of it all, is Kodmani,” Skelton pointed out, noting that billionaire leftist financier George Soros, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Goldman Sachs International Chairman Peter Sutherland, as well as countless military and intelligence bosses from the West, were all tied to the “Arab Reform Initiative” in various ways. “A picture is emerging of Kodmani as a trusted lieutenant of the Anglo-American democracy-promotion industry.” Indeed.Another senior representative of the SNC is Ausama (or Osama) Monajed, the founder and director of Barada Television. The “opposition” TV outfit, U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks showed, was actually being secretly financed with millions of American taxpayers’ dollars, starting under the George W. Bush administration. The Syrian regime “would undoubtedly view any U.S. funds going to illegal political groups as tantamount to supporting regime change,” noted the top U.S. diplomat in Damascus in a 2009 embassy cable. “A reassessment of current U.S.-sponsored programming that supports anti-[government] factions, both inside and outside Syria, may prove productive.”State Department spokesmen later claimed that unconstitutionally showering U.S. taxpayer money on foreign propaganda aimed at fomenting revolution in Syria was not “necessarily” undermining the existing government. Of course, more recently, the U.S. government and assorted Arab dictatorships have been funneling arms and equipment to the rebels, too. Even more aid is expected soon.
Another senior figure demanding an international war on Syria is Radwan Ziadeh, until recently a “senior fellow” at the taxpayer-funded, establishment-linked “U.S. Institute of Peace,” and a “visiting fellow” at the London-based Royal Institute of International Affairs — the CFR’s counterpart in the U.K. Also doing much of the talking — including demands that American troops be unconstitutionally deployed to participate in Syria’s civil war — are Hamza Fakher and Michael Weiss, both darlings of the neoconservative, war-mongering establishment. The two are also deeply involved in marketing the proposed military intervention using PR trickery, evidence suggests.Commenting on the “amazingly open ties of the Syrian opposition to their Western paymasters,” analyst Daniel McAdams offered a brief summary of the links in a piece for the liberty-minded site LewRockwell.com entitled “Syrian Opposition’s Amazing CIA Credentials.” His conclusion: “Down to the person these Syrian engines of regime change are products of the US empire and its interventionist, Trotskyite foreign policy of ‘global democratic revolution.’” More than a few observers have echoed those sentiments, especially in recent months, as the true agenda became even more transparent.Meanwhile, one of the primary sources of alleged atrocities in Syria being perpetrated by the Assad regime is known as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a British-based outfit that seems to consist of just one man who passionately despises the Syrian dictatorship. Establishment media outlets around the world have written countless stories based just on this one entity — almost always presenting it as an unbiased observer merely reporting the facts on the ground. But what is the SOHR really?
“One would believe this to be a giant sprawling organization with hundreds of members working hard on the ground, documenting evidence in Syria with photographs and video, while coordinating with foreign press to transparently and objectively ‘observe’ the ‘human rights’ conditions in Syria, as well as demonstrate their methodologies. Surely that is the impression the Western media attempts to relay to its readers,” noted analyst Tony Cartalucci, who has been following the Syrian conflict in detail.“However, astoundingly, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is none of these things,” he pointed out, citing a Reuters report about the SOHR and the activist behind it. “Instead, it is merely a single man, sitting behind a computer in a British apartment, who alleges he receives ‘phone calls’ with information always incriminating the Syrian government, and ever glorifying the ‘Free Syrian Army.’”The press, of course, has come under heavy fire for its shoddy reporting and misleading use of supposed sources. “Syria: major media outlets shaming themselves over Syrian Observatory for Human Rights,” noted a recent headline in the respected Modern Tokyo Times in an article exposing the SOHR “so-called entity” and the deceptive reporting in the West that relies so heavily on it. The use of biased “anonymous sources” has also attracted scrutiny.Some of the most high-profile “democracy activists” on the ground in Syria, for instance, have been caught staging events like massacres and killings in videos posted on YouTube. Sometimes the phony scenes have even been broadcasted by establishment media outlets such as CNN and the Qatari regime’s Al Jazeera. In several recent cases, slaughters blamed on the Assad regime — and widely touted as such by the international media — were later shown to have likely been committed by armed opposition groups.Of course, none of these facts are meant to downplay the ruthless and barbarian character of the Syrian dictator, who at one time was torturing prisoners on behalf of the U.S. government as part of its “terror war.” Years of tyranny in Syria have shown conclusively that, despite his well-documented protection of persecuted Middle Eastern Christians now facing slaughter at the hands of the rebels, Assad is a nasty tyrant. And without a doubt, there are also many well-meaning people risking their lives to bring down the despotic regime, most of whom are probably unaware that the foreign-based “opposition” figureheads purporting to speak and plan for them are so closely linked to the Western establishment.There are also numerous other factions, including al-Qaeda, battling the regime in Syria right now. So despite the carefully constructed media-created perception of an opposition unified behind the Western establishment-backed SNC for “democracy,” there are actually numerous armed revolutionaries who are at odds with each other. Those divisions will eventually explode if and when Assad is finally ousted.What the facts show, however, is that there is another, more sinister agenda to the war propaganda, the foreign backing of often-times brutal “rebels,” and the incessant calls for international military intervention to install a new regime in Syria. Amid all of the deception, it has become clear that there is much more going on than Western powers and the establishment media are admitting. And stuck in the crossfire between the establishment-backed rebels, Islamist terrorists, and the dictator’s armed forces, thousands of innocent civilians are being slaughtered.
