With ominous echoes of past winters, as the mercury is dropping, new COVID variants are spreading.It’s just under a year since a world that was finally shedding its masks was shaken by the emergence of the Omicron variant. But he said that weeks ago the government and top doctors were already discussing scenarios for possible winter variants.“We held roundtables with all ministries and the Home Front Command,” said Davidovitch, a professor at Ben Gurion University and a leader in the Israel Association of Public Health Physicians. “We don’t know how case numbers will change, but we do know that every winter, upper respiratory illnesses can lead to a burden on the health system.“One scenario we looked at involves lots of COVID, but in a variant like Omicron that often isn’t severe. Seventy-five years after the UN vote to establish a homeland for the Jews on part of the Palestinian land administered under the British Mandate, Benjamin Netanyahu is set to form a government composed of the most reactionary forces in the country, including the fascistic and racist Religious Zionism Party, now the third largest party in the 120-seat Knesset.It is a historical milestone in the crisis and rightward trajectory of the Zionist state.Netanyahu’s government will be made up of racists from the religious and ultra-nationalist parties pledged to Jewish supremacy and the implementation of measures synonymous with apartheid. Their vicious attacks on the Palestinians are aimed at driving them out of both Israel’s internationally recognized borders and the lands it has illegally occupied since the June 1967 Arab-Israeli war, in defiance of international law and countless United Nations resolutions.One candidate in line for high office is Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of the Jewish Power faction within Religious Zionism. Ben-Gvir, a virulent anti-Arab who regularly incites violence against the Palestinians, chanting “Death to the Arabs,” has faced dozens of charges of hate speech.He used to hang a portrait in his living room of the Israeli-American terrorist Baruch Goldstein, who in 1994 massacred 29 Palestinians and wounded 125 others while they were praying in Hebron, in what became known as the Cave of the Patriarchs massacre. Indeed, by embracing a program of ethnic cleansing, based on exclusivist conceptions of racial, religious and linguistic hegemony, and identifying this program with the Jewish people, the Israeli ruling class provides grist for the anti-Semitic mill internationally.This week, more than 240 Jewish-American voters in Pittsburgh signed a letter denouncing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which is closely aligned with both Netanyahu and Donald Trump, for spending millions of dollars to back more than 100 Republican candidates who voted to overturn the 2020 election, including “lawmakers who have promoted the anti-Semitic ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy that helped inspire the murder of eleven members of the three synagogues housed at Tree of Life,” which is located in Pittsburgh.It is a tragic irony of history that the same type of “race and blood” nationalism that was used by German fascism to exterminate 6 million Jews is being employed today by the Israeli ruling class against the Palestinians, while playing into the hands of those who seek once again to stoke up hatred of “outsiders” and “cosmopolitans” to target Jewish people.Within Israel itself, the stepped-up attacks on Palestinians will be accompanied by a mounting assault on the social and democratic rights of all workers, Jewish and Palestinian alike, as Netanyahu cracks down on political dissent on behalf of Israel’s plutocrats.How is this to be explained? There is, of course, the bankruptcy of the nominal opposition, which is an international phenomenon. Netanyahu was able to capitalize on the failure of “progressive” forces in the Bennett-Lapid-led “government of change” to put forward any alternative to alleviate the social inequality that is one of the highest in the OECD group of advanced countries. That failure reflects the class position which prioritizes the interests of Israel’s oligarchs over those of the working class, both Jewish and Palestinian.More fundamentally, the turn to openly racist policies is rooted in two major factors: the acute crisis of the Zionist state and the logic of Zionism itself.The establishment of a homeland for the Jews on the twin bases of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians already living there and a capitalist state was always a reactionary utopia, as the Fourth International explained in 1947.As the gap between rich and poor grew, due in no small part to the very economic policies required to carry out such a program, the state increased its reliance on right-wing settlers and extreme nationalist zealots, who provided the basis for the emergence of fascistic tendencies within Israel. Extreme nationalism was encouraged to divert growing anger over declining living standards and social inequality along reactionary lines.It is disturbing that a section of the Jewish people, who have long been associated with progressive movements and were the victims of the worst crime in history, are supporting political parties that can only be described as fascist. This is a product of the toxic political environment in Israel, long a beachhead for American imperialism in the Middle East.This reactionary outlook, however, is far from universally accepted. The Israeli working class has repeatedly sought a way out of this terrible conflict and a path towards peace with the Palestinians. But to do so means renewing the socialist and internationalist culture in which Jewish workers and intellectuals played such a central role in a previous era.In December of 1938, Leon Trotsky wrote with profound prescience:It is possible to imagine without difficulty what awaits the Jews at the mere outbreak of the future world war. But even without war the next development of world reaction signifies with certainty the physical extermination of the Jews… Now more than ever, the fate of the Jewish people—not only their political but also their physical fate—is indissolubly linked with the emancipating struggle of the international proletariat. Only audacious mobilization of the workers against reaction, creation of workers’ militia, direct physical resistance to the fascist gangs, increasing self-confidence, activity and audacity on the part of all the oppressed can provoke a change in the relation of forces, stop the world wave of fascism, and open a new chapter in the history of mankind. The Jerusalem police force has agreed to boost security at the Western Wall’s egalitarian section following violent protests at the site this summer, a top Jewish Agency official told the organization’s Board of Governors on Sunday.In late June, a group of Orthodox extremists entered the egalitarian section and disrupted a number of bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies taking place there, blowing whistles to drown out the prayers, calling the worshipers “Christians” and “Nazis,” and tearing up prayer books. Police, who were at the scene, largely allowed these disruptions to continue, only intervening when there was explicit violence.In response to this incident, the Jewish Agency Board of Governors passed a resolution calling the incident “despicable” and demanding that the organization take action to ensure the safety of visitors to the egalitarian section, also known as Ezrat Yisrael and Robinson’s Arch.“We’ve pushed forward to improve the security. I think the situation now is much better,” said Jewish Agency chairman Doron Almog.However, he stressed that making immediate security improvements was only part of the Jewish Agency’s overall plans for the egalitarian section. The organization is still officially committed to getting the government to implement the long-stalled Western Wall compromise, which — among other things — would give full control over the egalitarian section to non-Orthodox denominations. Currently, the ultra-Orthodox Western Wall chief rabbi has official authority over it.“Ezrat Yisrael issue is highly important for us, representing the mosaic of all the Jewish people equally,” Almog said.The Western Wall compromise was approved by the government in 2016 before being indefinitely mothballed due to ultra-Orthodox opposition. SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — Earth’s warming weather and rising seas are getting worse and doing so faster than before, the World Meteorological Organization warned Sunday in a somber note as world leaders started gathering for international climate negotiations.“The latest State of the Global Climate report is a chronicle of climate chaos,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. “We must answer the planet’s distress signal with action — ambitious, credible climate action.”In its annual state of the climate report, the United Nations’ weather agency said that sea level rise in the past decade was double what it was in the 1990s and since January 2020 has jumped at a higher rate than that. Since the decade began, seas are rising at 5 millimeters a year (.2 inches) compared to 2.1 millimeters (.08 inches) in the 1990s.The last eight years have been the warmest on record, the WMO said in a report that didn’t break new ground but was a collection of recent weather trends, data and impacts in one central place.“The melting (of ice) game we have lost and also the sea level rate,” WMO chief Petteri Taalas told The Associated Press. “There are no positive indicators so far.”The only reason that the globe hasn’t broken annual temperature records in the past few years is a rare three-year La Niña weather phenomenon, he said.The data on sea level and average temperatures are nothing compared to how climate change has hit people in extreme weather. The report highlights the summer’s incredible flood in Pakistan that killed more than 1,700 people and displaced 7.9 million, a crippling four-year drought in East Africa that has more than 18 million hungry, the Yangtze River drying to its lowest level in August, and record heat-waves broiling people in Europe and China.“This latest report from the World Meteorological Organization reads like a lab report for a critically ill patient, but in this case the patient is Earth,” said climate scientist Jennifer Francis of the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Cape Cod, who wasn’t part of the report.Levels of heat-trapping carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide all reached record high levels, with potent methane increasing at a record pace, the report said.That means more than just warming temperatures on land. Ice, both Greenland’s ice sheet and the world’s glaciers, are shrinking precipitously, the report said. For the 26th year in a row, Greenland lost ice when all types of ice are factored in. The volume of glacier snow in Switzerland dropped by more than one-third from 2001 to 2022, the report said.But 90% of the heat trapped on Earth goes into the ocean and the upper 2000 meters (6561 feet) of the ocean is getting warmer faster. The rate of warming the last 15 years is 67% faster than since 1971, the report said.That ocean heat “will continue to warm in the future – a change which is irreversible on centennial to millennial time scales,” the report said.Outside experts weren’t surprised by the report and said no one should be.“What climate scientists have warned about for decades is upon us. A UN report released to coincide with the COP27 climate summit on Sunday revealed that the past eight years were the hottest on record, leaving the climate goals set out in the 2015 Paris Climate Accords “barely within reach.”Produced by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a body of the UN, the report said that the rate of sea level rise has doubled since 1993, and that the global average temperature in 2022 is about 1.15°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.According to the WMO, 2023 is only expected to bring a rise in the average temperature, with the chilling effects of the La Nina weather pattern set to recede at the end of 2022.The Greenland ice sheet, located 3,200 meters above sea level, lost mass for the 26th consecutive year, and, in September, rain, rather than snow, was recorded on the sheet for the first time.In the European alps, glacier melt was at record levels, with average thickness losses measured between three and four meters, “substantially more than in the previous record year [of] 2003,” the report said.“The greater the warming, the worse the impacts,” WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas warned.“We have such high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now that the lower 1.5°C of the Paris Agreement is barely within reach.”“It’s already too late for many glaciers and the melting will continue for hundreds if not thousands of years, with major implications for water security,” Taalas said.Taalas added that often “those least responsible for climate change suffer most,” but posited that this year, “even well-prepared societies” suffered from extreme weather events, a possible reference to Hurricane Ian, which ravaged the US state of Florida in September.On the opening day of the COP27 UN Climate Summit, António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, told delegates, “Emissions are still growing at record levels… that means our planet is on course for reaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible and forever bake in catastrophic temperature rise.”Guterres implored the global community to use the conference, which is taking place in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, as an opportunity to “rebuild trust and re-establish the ambition needed to avoid driving our planet over the climate cliff.”
