More recently, Israeli forces carried out strikes against Iranian targets in the country, the first ever, amid several direct flareups with the Islamic Republic.This week, Israel announced that it was the first country in the world to conduct airstrikes with the US-made F-35 stealth fighter jet. HONOLULU (Reuters) - Lava from Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano is exploding as it pours into the ocean, shooting rock fragments that are a danger to boaters. Inland, where molten rock is burning through jungle, methane explosions are hurling boulders while toxic gas is reaching some of the highest levels seen in recent times.These were new risks geologists warned of on Tuesday as Kilauea's 19-day eruption showed no sign of easing, with repeated explosions at its summit and fountains of lava up to 160 feet (50 m) from giant cracks or fissures on its flank.Lava edged towards a geothermal power plant on Tuesday after destroying an old warehouse near the facility, County of Hawaii Civil Defense said.Workers at the closed Puna Geothermal Venture, which provided around 25 percent of electricity on Hawaii's Big Island, worked to cap the last of three pressurized wells to reduce the risk of an uncontrolled release of toxic gases should they be inundated by lava.The race at the site marked the latest challenge facing authorities during what geologists call an unprecedented, simultaneous eruption at Kilauea's summit and from giant fissures 25 miles (40 km) down its eastern side."Fissures near Puna Geothermal Venture are active and producing lava slowly flowing onto the property," Civil Defense said in a statement. EDMONTON — Police officers will march in this year's Edmonton Pride festival, but not in their uniforms.The Edmonton Pride Festival Society said it restricted police vehicles from participating, as well as lights and sirens in the 2017 parade after a similar move in Toronto."Many pride organizations in other communities started talking with their marginalized members, trying to do more to include them in the conversation around Pride," the society said in a news release. "In many communities, because police enforcement agencies were seen to make marginalized people feel unsafe, police were asked (or told) to step back and not be involved in Pride celebrations."In 2017, Supt. Brad Doucette said the Edmonton Police Service had more work to do if the community wasn't comfortable with a police presence.The service later met with the festival society to discuss what could be done to build bridges.As a result, both city police and Alberta RCMP have decided to walk in civilian clothing in this year's parade."We can highlight the individuals that are beyond the badge — the people who actually make up the Edmonton Police Service," said Doucette. "We are individuals. We are parents, we're grandparents, we're siblings, we're allies with the LGBTQ, we're oftentimes parents of, or are members of the community itself and that gets lost with the uniform."He said each of the 50 or so officers who participate will wear an individualized T-shirt."We're not putting any parameters about what any individual are going to put on their shirt," he said. "We have people from the LGBTQ community in our service, so you may see people put that on there — that they're gay, that they're lesbian, that they're married to a man or that they are the mother of a gay youth."RCMP officers from the Edmonton area will also attend the parade out of uniform."Participants will be wearing RCMP Pride T-shirts, as proud employees of the RCMP, in support of the LGBTQ2S+ community," said Staff Sgt. MBANDAKA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Three patients infected with the deadly Ebola virus slipped out of an isolation ward at a hospital in the Congolese city of Mbandaka, an aid group said, as medics raced to stop the disease spreading in the busy river port.Two patients left the hospital on Monday, said Henry Gray, head of the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) mission in the city, before being located the following day.The World Health Organization's (WHO) representative in Congo, Yokouide Allarangar, said one was found dead and another was sent back to hospital and died shortly afterwards.Allarangar, speaking to reporters in the capital Kinshasa, said the two patients had left the hospital with the help of family members before heading to a "place of prayer".Health Ministry sources, who asked not to be named, said two police officers had been deployed to help track them down.Another patient left on Saturday, but was found alive the same day and is under observation, he said."This is a hospital. It's not a prison. We can't lock everything," he said.WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said health workers had redoubled efforts to trace contacts with the patients. Health workers have drawn up a list of 628 people who have had contact with known cases who will need to be vaccinated."It is unfortunate but not unexpected," he said. TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada is rejecting more refugee claims from people who crossed its border illegally as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government seeks to dissuade, block and turn back thousands more, according to new data obtained by Reuters.Forty percent of such border crossers whose claims were finalised in the first three months of this year were granted refugee status, down from 53 percent for all of 2017, according to data provided by Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board. There were no claims finalised in the first three months of 2017.The Immigration and Refugee Board said on Tuesday it has received no directives or guidance on how to deal with these border crossers.The government's "first priority remains the safety and security of Canadians and the integrity of our immigration system," a spokesman for Immigration and Refugee Minister Ahmed Hussen said in an email.The wave of border crossings started up in January 2017 and ramped up over the summer as many Haitian immigrants in the United States who were at risk of losing their temporary legal status streamed into Canada on expectations they could find a safe haven. BEIRUT (Reuters) - The withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria, demanded by the United States, is not up for discussion, a top Syrian official was quoted as saying on Wednesday, adding that Damascus was deciding on its next campaign against rebels."Whether Iranian forces or Hezbollah withdraw or stay in Syria is not up for discussion because it's the (business) of the Syrian government," Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said in an interview with Russia's Sputnik state news agency.Backed by Russian warplanes, ground forces from Iran and allied militia, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, have helped President Bashar al-Assad drive rebels from Syria's biggest cities, putting him in an unassailable military position.In recent weeks, they have recaptured all remaining insurgent areas near Damascus, including the densely populated eastern Ghouta area, as well as big enclaves in central Syria.The government is now in its strongest position since the early months of the war in 2011, although still a long way from achieving Assad's aim of reasserting sway over all of Syria.Anti-Assad rebels still control two large contiguous areas of territory in the northwest and southwest.
