Comet makes rare close pass by Mars as spacecraft watch-Reuters-By Irene Klotz-OCT 20,14-YAHOONEWS
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A comet from the outer reaches of the solar system on Sunday made a rare, close pass by Mars where a fleet of robotic science probes were poised for studies.Comet Siding Spring passed just 87,000 miles (140,000 km) from Mars, less than half the distance between Earth and the moon and 10 times closer than any known comet has passed by Earth, NASA said. The comet, named for the Australian observatory that discovered it last year, is believed to be a first-time visitor to the inner solar system, having departed the Oort Cloud, located beyond Neptune’s orbit, more than a million years ago.Comets are believed to be frozen remnants left over from the formation of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago.“This comet is on its way plunging in toward the sun, growing a tail,” astronomer David Grinspoon, with the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, said during a live webcast of the comet’s flyby on Slooh.com.The comet made its closest approach to Mars at 2:27 pm EDT, hurling past at about 126,000 mph (203,000 kph).NASA’s three Mars orbiters and two rovers, as well as orbiters owned by the European Space Agency and India were expected to monitor the comet’s approach and fly-by, which may have left Mars engulfed in a cloud of comet dust.“The comet has never ever been closer to the sun that we think maybe Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune’s distance. This is its first passage into what we call the ‘water-ice line,’ where it’s really starting to blow its water off,” astrophysicist Carey Lisse, with Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland, told reporters during a press conference last week.Initially, NASA was concerned the comet’s dusty tail could pose a threat to orbiting spacecraft as it brushes past Mars. Later assessments somewhat allayed those concerns, but NASA still opted to tweak its satellites’ orbits so that they would be behind the planet during the most risky part of the flyby."Mars will be right at the edge of the debris cloud, so it might encounter some of the particles, or it might not," NASA Mars scientist Rich Zurek, with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement.Mars’ atmosphere, though much thinner than Earth’s, will shield NASA’s Opportunity and Curiosity rovers from comet dust, which may trigger meteor showers.Mars also will pass directly through the comet’s coma, which is an envelope of gas and dust surrounding the comet’s nucleus, providing an unprecedented opportunity for study, Grinspoon said. “This is a really rare event.”(Editing by Eric Walsh)

EU's Barroso warns Britain against bloc exit-AFP-By Naomi O'Leary-OCT 21,14-YAHOONEWS
London (AFP) - European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso will argue that Britain is better in the European Union on Monday, as pressure mounts from British eurosceptics seven months out from a general election."In the years to come the UK could be facing a choice – to stay or leave the European Union," the outgoing head of the 28-member bloc's executive body will say, according to an advance copy of his speech to thinktank Chatham House."Could the UK get by without a little help from your friends? My answer is probably not."Squeezed by growing momentum of the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP), Prime Minister David Cameron has vowed to re-negotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership and hold an in-out referendum if he is re-elected.Barroso will urge politicians to make "the positive case" for staying in Europe, expressing concern about "negative and false portrayals in... newspapers from Monday to Saturday.""It worries me that so few politicians on this side of the Channel are ready to tell the facts as they are," Barroso will say. After press reports that Cameron might seek to impose a cap on EU migrants coming to Britain, Barroso told a BBC interview in London that such a limit would be against European law."Any kind of arbitrary cap seems to me to be not in conformity with European laws. Because for us it's very important the principle of non-discrimination," he said."The freedom of movement is a very important principle in the internal market: movement of goods, of capital, of services and of people."The Sunday Times this week reported that Cameron was exploring whether national insurance numbers issued to EU migrants could be capped -- personal identifying codes needed to work in Britain.Migration to Britain from other countries in the EU, particularly from newer and poorer member states in Eastern Europe, is a sensitive political issue in Britain and UKIP have put border control at the heart of their electoral campaign. The party won its first elected seat in the Westminster parliament in a by-election earlier this month with the re-election of lawmaker Douglas Carswell, who had defected from the ruling Conservative Party.UKIP hope to win a second seat in a November by-election, following the defection of another Conservative MP to the once-fringe party that has risen to around 17 percent support in polls. The prime minister has vowed to negotiate hard to "get what Britain needs" on immigration, but has not given detail on specific proposals.International Development Secretary Justine Greening, a cabinet minister in the Conservative-led government, said on Sunday that a need to address migration from within the EU meant the rules would have be examined."That means taking a fundamental look at some of the rules that allow unrestricted immigration in a way that we don't think is sensible," Greening told Sky News.

1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman (FALSE CHURCH) was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,(VATICAN COLOURS)(ANOTHER REASON WE KNOW THE FALSE POPE COMES FROM THE VATICAN) and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)

10/18/2014 -Synod approves “relatio synodi”: Remarried divorcees remain a controversial topic
The Synod-The paragraph of the text which outlines the differing opinions regarding the readmission of remarried divorcees to the sacraments obtained 104 votes in favour and 74 against. The paragraph on homosexuality has been modified after 118 Synod Fathers voted in favour and 62 against, despite the fact it makes reference to the Catechism. These points did not therefore receive the unanimous consensus of the Synod: An absolute majority was obtained but not a qualifying majority-andrea tornielli
vatican city-This afternoon, the Synod fathers voted on and approved the relatio synodi, the final document of the Extraordinary Synod on the Family convened by Pope Francis. As per Francis’ request, the discussions were very free and there was a genuine exchange of opinions on the problems at hand. No set paths were followed and there was no maneuvering. Each single paragraph in the text was voted on: bishops and other members of the Synod expressed their opinion on each of the 62 points set out in the document. The process took place via electronic voting which offered only two options: placet or non placet. A two thirds majority was needed in order for the text to be approved. The most debated paragraph was the one on remarried divorcees, which presented two opposing arguments and obtained a two thirds majority: 104 voted for and 74 against. Similarly, 118 voted in favour of the paragraph that deals with homosexuality and 62 against. The Pope decided to publish the text in its entirety and to give journalists a breakdown of the votes cast on each paragraph, in order to give a clear picture of the debate, and the extent to which the Synod fathers agreed or disagreed with the contents of each paragraph. One paragraph, obtained two thirds of the vote (155 versus 19). It reads: “The situations remarried divorcees are faced with also require careful reflection and respectful accompaniment, avoiding the kind of language and attitudes that may make them feel discriminated against. They must be encouraged to participate in Church life. Caring for these people does not weaken the faith of Catholic communities nor their belief in the indissolubility of marriage. In fact by providing this kind of care such they perform an act of charity.”The paragraph which follows is the most debated one in the document (104 voted for and 74 against) and it refers to the possibility of allowing remarried divorcees access to the sacraments: “The Synod reflected on the possibility of granting remarried divorcees access to the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist. A number of Synod fathers expressed themselves in favour of the rules currently in force on the basis of the link between participation in the Eucharist and communion with the Church and its teaching regarding the indissolubility of marriage. Others expressed themselves in favour of welcoming remarried divorcees to the Eucharist in certain specific situations and under very precise conditions, particularly when dealing with irreversible cases or cases which involve moral obligations toward children who would suffer unjustly otherwise. Access to the sacraments should be preceded by a period of penance, under the guidance of the diocesan bishop. The question requires in-depth consideration, whilst being aware of the distinction between an objective situation of sin and mitigating circumstances. This is given that “Imputability and responsibility for an action can be diminished or even nullified by ignorance, inadvertence, duress, fear, habit, inordinate attachments, and other psychological or social factors” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1735).”Finally, the paragraph on homosexuality, which obtained an absolute majority but not the qualifying two thirds vote, reads as such: “Some families may comprise members who are attracted to members of the same sex. The Synod has reflected on the kind of pastoral care that should be provided to people who find themselves in this situation, bearing the teaching of the Church in mind: "There is no basis whatsoever to assimilate or to draw even remote analogies between same-sex unions and the plan of God for marriage and the family. Nevertheless, men and women with homosexual tendencies must be accepted with respect and sensitivity. [However], in their regard should be avoided every sign of unjust discrimination” (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith).” In order to appreciate just how sensitive this topic is, it is important to note that not even a paragraph which essentially repeats what the Catechism of the Catholic Church and a former Holy Office text say, obtained the qualifying two thirds vote.So there are some controversial issues here, which did not obtain the two thirds majority and cannot therefore be considered as Synodal proposals. However, as the text is still only a working document, which local Churches will be discussing next year, Francis decided to publish everything. It is also significant that an absolute majority showed a willingness to examine issues further and continue discussions.
10/19/2014 -Francis: Church has one year to mature. In the meantime, its doors are wide open
Francis at the Synod-The Church’s doors are wide open, to receive “not only the just”, “but the needy” too. Francis disproved assumptions about a “disputatious Church where one part is against the other”, guaranteeing its unity. He reiterated that no one ever called into question the indissolubility of marriage and marriage’s openness to life-iacopo scaramuzzi
vatican city-Speaking after the vote on the content of the Synod’s final document, the relatio synodi (three key paragraphs in the draft document did not win the two thirds majority vote), Francis addressed the assembled Fathers saying: “Dear brothers and sisters, now we still have one year to mature, with true spiritual discernment, the proposed ideas and to find concrete solutions to so many difficulties and innumerable challenges that families must confront; to give answers to the many discouragements that surround and suffocate families.” In his speech, which received a five-minute standing ovation , Francis underlined that the Church’s “doors are wide open to receive the needy”, “not only the just”. He disproved assumptions about a “disputatious Church where one part is against the other”, and presented himself as the “guarantor” of its unity. He reiterated that no one ever called into question the indissolubility of marriage and marriage’s openness to life. The relatio synodi, Francis emphasised, is “the faithful and clear summary of everything that has been said and discussed in this hall and in the small groups. It is presented to the Episcopal Conferences as ‘lineamenta’”, as a guiding text that is, for the Ordinary Synod in October 2015. “I can happily say that – with a spirit of collegiality and of synodality – we have truly lived the experience of ‘Synod’, a path of solidarity, a ‘journey together’, the Pope said after thanking everyone present. “And it has been ‘a journey’ – and like every journey there were moments of running fast, as if wanting to conquer time and reach the goal as soon as possible; other moments of fatigue, as if wanting to say ‘enough’; other moments of enthusiasm and ardour. There were moments of profound consolation listening to the testimony of true pastors, who wisely carry in their hearts the joys and the tears of their faithful people.”In typical Jesuit-style spiritual language, Poe Francis said that during the course of these past two weeks, there have been “moments of consolation” as well as “moments of desolation, of tensions and temptations”, which he then went on to list: “One, a temptation to hostile inflexibility, that is, wanting to close oneself within the written word, (the letter) and not allowing oneself to be surprised by God.” This is “the temptation of the zealous, of the scrupulous, of the solicitous and of the so-called – today – “traditionalists” and also of the intellectuals.” Then there was “the temptation to a destructive tendency to goodness, that in the name of a deceptive mercy binds the wounds without first curing them and treating them.” There was also a temptation to transform stones into bread to break the long, heavy, and painful fast; and also to transform the bread into a stone and cast it against the sinners, the weak, and the sick.” There was “the temptation to come down off the Cross, to please the people,” “the temptation to neglect the “depositum fidei” [the deposit of faith], not thinking of themselves as guardians but as owners or masters [of it]; or, on the other hand, the temptation to neglect reality, making use of meticulous language and a language of smoothing to say so many things and to say nothing! They call them ‘byzantinisms’.”“Personally I would be very worried and saddened if it were not for these temptations and these animated discussions; this movement of the spirits,” Francis said. “If all were in a state of agreement, or silent in a false and quietist peace. Instead, I have seen and I have heard – with joy and appreciation – speeches and interventions full of faith, of pastoral and doctrinal zeal, of wisdom, of frankness and of courage: and of parrhesia ... And this always – we have said it here, in the Hall – without ever putting into question the fundamental truths of the Sacrament of marriage: the indissolubility, the unity, the faithfulness, the fruitfulness, that openness to life.”The Church “is not afraid to eat and drink with prostitutes and publicans,” Francis said. “The Church that has the doors wide open to receive the needy, the penitent, and not only the just or those who believe they are perfect! The Church that is not ashamed of the fallen brother and pretends not to see him.” It is not true therefore, that the Catholic Church is “a disputatious Church where one part is against the other,” as “many commentators, or people who talk” have portrayed it.
The Synod took place “cum Petro and sub Petro” and “the presence of the Pope is the guarantee of it all,” Francis emphasised, adding: “We will speak a little bit about the Pope, now, in relation to the Bishops [laughing]. So, the duty of the Pope is that of guaranteeing the unity of the Church; ... it is that of reminding the pastors that their first duty is to nourish the flock – to nourish the flock – that the Lord has entrusted to them, and to seek to welcome ... the lost sheep.” After extensively quoting Benedict XVI’s General Audience on 26 May 2010, Francis said: “The Pope, in this context, is not the supreme lord but rather the supreme servant” and he guarantor of the obedience and the conformity of the Church to the will of God, to the Gospel of Christ, and to the Tradition of the Church.”
10/19/2014 -Blessed Paul VI called for Church “to adapt ways and method to the growing needs of our time”-The beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square-Francis has officially declared the late Pope from the Italian city of Brescia, Blessed. Francis thanked him for his “humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church” and commenting on the Gospel, said: “God is not afraid of new things!”Benedict XVI was also present at the Beatification Mass-ANDREA TORNIELLI
vatican city-“On this day of the Beatification of Pope Paul VI, I think of the words with which he established the Synod of Bishops: “by carefully surveying the signs of the times, we are making every effort to adapt ways and methods… to the growing needs of our time and the changing conditions of society”. Pope Francis has declared his predecessor Giovanni Battista Montini - who was Bishop of Rome from June 1963 to August 1978 - Blessed. In the homily he pronounced at today’s mass which he concelebrated with all the Synod Fathers, Francis spoke once again about the path taken by this first Synod on the Family.Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was also present at the solemn ceremony celebrated in the sun-drenched square in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. Benedict XVI arrived well ahead of time and took his seat in the first row of concelebrating cardinals. Francis, who arrived wearing a chasuble which had belonged to the newly beatified Paul VI, went to greet Ratzinger and thanked him for being present. Benedict XVI's low key presence is increasingly becoming a normal part of Church life, as Francis had wanted. Ratzinger had just turned 55 when Paul VI nominated him Archbishop of Munich in March 1977. Three months later, he was created cardinal. Paul VI's beatification was celebrated at the beginning of today’s mass. After the official proclamation, a relic of the Blessed Paul VI was brought to the altar: a bloodstained woollen undershirt he was wearing when he was stabbed by a mentally disturbed man in Manila, in 1970, just after he had disembarked the aeroplane. The dagger only just missed his heart. In his homily, Francis commented on Jesus’ words in the passage of today’s Gospel: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” “Goaded by the Pharisees who wanted, as it were, to give him an exam in religion and catch him in error, Jesus gives this ironic and brilliant reply. It is a striking phrase which the Lord has bequeathed to all those who experience qualms of conscience, particularly when their comfort, their wealth, their prestige, their power and their reputation are in question. This happens all the time; it always has.”Francis urged faithful to “master the fear which we often feel at God’s surprises. God is not afraid of new things! That is why he is continually surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways.” “Rendering to God the things that are God’s” means being docile to his will, devoting our lives to him and working for his kingdom of mercy, love and peace. Here is where our true strength is found; here is the leaven which makes it grow and the salt which gives flavour to all our efforts to combat the prevalent pessimism which the world proposes to us.”“When we put our hope in God,” Francis said, “we are neither fleeing from reality nor seeking an alibi: instead, we are striving to render to God what is God’s. That is why we Christians look to the future, God’s future. It is so that we can live this life to the fullest – with our feet firmly planted on the ground – and respond courageously to whatever new challenges come our way.”“In these days, during the extraordinary Synod of Bishops, we have seen how true this is,” the Pope added. “For the Church is called to waste no time in seeking to bind up open wounds and to rekindle hope in so many people who have lost hope.” “We have sown and we continued to sow, patiently and perseveringly, in the certainty that it is the Lord who gives growth to what we have sown,” Francis said recalling the words used by Paul VI when he established the Synod of Bishops: “By carefully surveying the signs of the times, we are making every effort to adapt ways and methods… to the growing needs of our time and the changing conditions of society.”“When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle, we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and important: thanks! Thanks! Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church!” Francis went on to quote a phrase used by Paul VI: “Perhaps the Lord has called me and preserved me for this service not because I am particularly fit for it, or so that I can govern and rescue the Church from her present difficulties, but so that I can suffer something for the Church, and in that way it will be clear that he, and no other, is her guide and saviour.” It is in this humility that “the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth: before the advent of a secularized and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom – and at times alone – to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord.”At the end of the Holy Mass, Pope Francis recited the Angelus prayer in the presence of faithful and pilgrims gathered in t. Peter’s Square, recalling how Paul VI “was a staunch supporter of the mission ad gentes; it is the witness above all of the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii nuntiandi with which he intended to reawaken the enthusiasm and the commitment of the Church for the mission. And this Exhortation is still relevant, it has great relevance. It is significant to consider this aspect of the Pontificate of Paul VI, especially today, which is celebrated as World Missionary Day. Before invoking together the Madonna with the prayer of the Angelus, I am pleased to emphasize the profound Marian devotion of Blessed Paul VI. The Christian people will always be grateful to this Pontiff for the Apostolic Exhortation Marialis cultus, and for having proclaimed Mary “Mother of the Church,” on the occasion of the close of the third session of the Second Vatican Council.”

U.S. military says air-drops weapons for Kurdish fighters near Kobani-Reuters-OCT 21,14-YAHOONEWS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military said it had air-dropped arms to Syrian rebels fighting Islamic State militants near Kobani on Sunday in what appeared to be the Pentagon's first public acknowledgment it has provided lethal aid to the rebels. The U.S. Central Command said it had delivered weapons, ammunition and medical supplies to the Syrian rebels who for weeks have sought to stave off an onslaught by Islamic State fighters that have overrun swathes of Syria and Iraq this year. The "resupply" of rebel fighters is the latest escalation in the U.S. effort to help local forces beat back the radical Sunni militant group in Syria after years of trying to avoid getting dragged into the more than three-year Syrian civil war.The United States began carrying out air strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq in August and about a month later started bombing the militant group in neighboring Syria, in part to prevent it from enjoying safe haven on Syrian territory. In a brief statement, the U.S. Central Command said U.S. Air Force C-130 aircraft "delivered weapons, ammunition and medical supplies that were provided by Kurdish authorities in Iraq and intended to enable continued resistance against ISIL's attempts to overtake Kobani," using an acronym to refer to Islamic State. The statement said 135 U.S. air strikes near Kobani in recent days, combined with continued resistance against Islamic State on the ground, had slowed the group's advances into the town and killed hundreds of its fighters."However, the security situation in Kobani remains fragile as ISIL continues to threaten the city and Kurdish forces continue to resist," the statement said. It mentioned no new air strikes.(Reporting by Mohammad Zargham, Arshad Mohammed and Warren Strobel; Editing by Michael Perry)

BRUSSELS - Ask a politician in any EU country what they would give for an extra 2 percent on their nation's economic output without any policy changes, and you are likely to be offered a couple of limbs and a body part.Yet Eurostat is set to publish figures on Friday (17 October) showing that the bloc's GDP has grown by nearly 2.5 percent. However, the apparent surge in economic growth is not the result of increased spending or output and will not make anyone feel richer. Instead it is the product of a new accounting system used by the EU's statistical agency to calculate economic activity which includes sectors ranging from research and development to drug trafficking and prostitution.October is the first month that EU countries have to report data based on the revised regulation on the European System of National and Regional Accounts, known as ESA 2010.The main innovation in ESA 2010 is that investments in research and development are classified as assets that will create value in future years, a move which, on its own, is worth an extra 1.9 percent."In a modern, more and more digital economy, R&D is an investment for the future even more important than buildings, trucks, or factories," said Eurostat in a briefing paper explaining the new regime. The new methodology also classifies military spending as an investment in the future, and includes chunks of the grey economy and illegal activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution, and smuggling to be taken into account in the gross domestic product. The UK's Office of National Statistics estimates that Britons' spending on prostitution and illegal drugs bolsters the UK economy by as much as £11 billion (€13.8 billion). But the EU institutions cannot be accused of cooking the books since ESA 2010 is based on the most up-to-date accounting system used by the United Nations, which is in the process of being implemented across the world. The US has been using the new rules since August 2013, with Eurostat estimating that this has inflated the US economic indicators by 3 percent. The legislation putting the rules in place attracted almost no attention when it was adopted by MEPs and ministers in 2012 but will give the bloc its fastest economic growth rate since 2007.The eurozone registered zero growth in the first six months of 2014 and has expanded by a mere 1.3 percent since 2010.Finland and Sweden are expected to see the biggest change from the new system of reporting.Finland's statistical office says that its GDP will go up by 4.3 percent, while Statistics Sweden expects that its figures will be "adjusted upwards by slightly more than 5 percent of which about 4 percentage points are an adaptation to ESA 2010."Austria, the Netherlands and the UK are forecast to enjoy a 'growth' rate of between 3 and 4 percent, while Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania and Poland will benefit by less than 1 percent.

Ebola tops EU meeting with warnings crisis is at 'tipping point'-AFP-OCT 21,14-YAHOONEWS
Luxembourg (AFP) - European foreign ministers gather in Luxembourg Monday to try and formalise a joint EU response to combat the Ebola virus amid diplomatic warnings the crisis has reached a "tipping point".The ministers will meet hours after it was announced that a Spanish nurse who was the first person outside Africa to be infected had tested negative for the virus.Ahead of the talks, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the bloc should consider sending "a civilian EU mission" to west Africa."This would offer a platform to (EU) member states" to send medical staff to the region, he said at a health forum in Berlin. One EU diplomat said Britain -- which already has a navy ship bound for Sierra Leone laden with medical staff and supplies -- hoped to "galvanise EU action on Ebola"."There is a real sense that this is a tipping point and we must get to grips with it now," said the diplomat. "If we can deal with it in the country, we don't have to deal with it at home."Another diplomat said there are plans for three nations to spearhead global aid to the worst-hit countries: the United States for Liberia, Britain for Sierra Leone and France for Guinea.A global UN appeal for nearly $1 billion (785 billion euros) has so far fallen short, with only $385.9 million given by governments and agencies, and a further $225.8 million promised.
- Nurse tests negative -
The political move comes as Madrid announced on Sunday that Teresa Romero, a nurse hospitalised on October 6, has tested negative for the virus. The 44-year-old will have to undergo a second test before she can officially be declared free of Ebola, the Spanish government said.Romero contracted the tropical fever after caring for two Ebola patients who died at Madrid's Carlos III hospital, in the first known case of transmission outside Africa. She will be given another test "in the coming hours", according to a statement from Spain's special Ebola committee, which added that her "health was... developing favourably"."I am very happy today because we can say Teresa beat the disease," Romero's husband Javier Limon said in a video filmed at the hospital where he is being kept under observation with 14 other people who had contact with Romero before she was diagnosed. The worst-ever outbreak of the deadly virus has so far killed more than 4,500 people, almost all in west Africa, with close to 2,500 deaths registered in worst-hit Liberia.Isolated cases among health workers in the US and Europe have sparked fear that the epidemic could turn global and prompted Western countries to ramp up their response.Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said a generation of Africans were at risk of "being lost to economic catastrophe" because of the crisis, warning that the "time for talking or theorising is over"."This fight requires a commitment from every nation that has the capacity to help -- whether that is with emergency funds, medical supplies or clinical expertise," the Nobel laureate said in an open letter to the world published by the BBC Sunday. The virus, for which there is currently no licensed treatment or vaccine, spreads via contact with bodily fluids. Some countries have managed to get a handle on the outbreak, with Africa's most populous nation Nigeria expected to be declared free of Ebola on Monday after 42 days without registering any new infections.
- 'We made mistakes'-
With panic spreading in Western countries about the tropical disease, US President Barack Obama on Saturday cautioned Americans against "hysteria".US media have been reporting on a string of false alarms among a public spooked by the news that two American nurses at a Texas hospital had contracted the virus after treating a Liberian patient who died from Ebola on October 8.The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday apologised over its handling of the case."As an institution, we made mistakes in handling this very difficult challenge," the hospital said in a "letter to our community" that was published in Sunday's Dallas Morning News. The United States, Britain and Canada were joined by France this weekend in screening air passengers from Ebola-hit zones ahead of a review of EU practices this week.Belgium's prime minister said it would start screening passengers from west Africa on Monday, while France dismissed a call by unions representing Air France cabin staff to suspend flights to Guinea.French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, speaking during a visit to Beijing, warned that halting the airline's daily Paris-Conakry flight would encourage riskier forms of travel that could spread the virus even faster.Obama has also played down the idea of a travel ban on flights from west Africa. As of October 14, 4,555 people had died from Ebola out of a total of 9,216 cases registered in seven countries, the Geneva-based World Health Organization said.

Sex and drugs drive EU growth surge-17.10.14 @ 09:23-EUOBSERVER-By Benjamin Fox
