A clash broke out between security forces and local residents in the West Bank settlement of Givat Gal near Hebron on Monday night, when representatives from the Defense Ministry demolished an illegally built structure in the community, officials said.Representatives from the Civil Administration, a unit within the Defense Ministry’s Coordinator for the Government’s Activities in the Territories’ office (COGAT), determined that a house in the Jewish community had been built without the proper permits, defense officials said.In a video from the scene, residents can be heard shouting at the soldiers carrying out the demolition order.A scuffle later broke out, which included rock throwing, though it was not clear who initiated the violence.According to the right-wing news site HaKol HaYehudi, a number of residents protesting the demolition were injured in the clash, including the head of the local council Malachi Levinger.Two protesters were also arrested and taken to Jerusalem until they could be brought before a judge, the website reported.This was the first demolition in a Jewish settlement carried out under Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who entered the position last month.Liberman, who lives in a West Bank settlement, has been critical of demolitions of this sort in the past.Last July, the High Court of Justice determined that a group of buildings in the Beit El settlement had been built on Palestinian land and had to be torn down, which sparked a number of small-scale tussles between nationalist protesters and security forces.Liberman, then a member of the opposition, referred to the decision as “the final seal on the failed conduct of Prime Minister [Benjamin Netanyahu] and Defense Minister [Moshe Ya’alon].”Based on the demolition order in Beit El, Liberman determined “Netanyahu and Ya’alon are not suited to lead the country.”The defense minister’s office declined to comment on Monday night’s demolition.

A senior Hamas officer in the Gaza Strip has been missing for several days, with reports in the coastal enclave suggesting he crossed the border and turned himself in to Israel.The elite officer in Hamas’ military wing Izz a-din al-Qassam Brigades, who was not named, is the son of a Hamas judge from Khan Younis in the south of the Strip and was involved in training in the terror group’s cross-border tunnels, according to an Israeli Channel 2 report.Some Palestinian reports indicated the officer told his family he was going for a hike and crossed the border into Israel, the TV report said. A Calgary man has been charged with smuggling after 220 kilograms of tobacco was seized at a Saskatchewan-U.S. border crossing.It's the biggest tobacco bust on the Prairies in at least five years, the Canada Border Services Agency says.CBSA officers seized the tobacco April 6 as the man, 56, was coming into Canada at North Portal, Sask., north of North Dakota.He was charged June 3 with smuggling, making false statements, failing to report imported goods, and willfully evading the payment of duties on imported goods pursuant to the Customs Act.He was also charged with unlawful possession under the Excise Act.Last year, CBSA officers in Saskatchewan made 45 seizures of undeclared tobacco products, the agency says.Across Canada, the CBSA seized 24,137 cigarette cartons, 134 cigars, and 45,067 kilograms of other tobacco products in 2015.

A man in Musquash is protesting the Canadian flag by displaying it upside down, and has upset some neighbours in the process.Ivan Morgan, 78, hangs four Canadian flags upside down on his fence, in plain view of the road, to deliberately show his disrespect for the Maple Leaf.He said he believes the current flag does not represent the freedom and rights of Canadians."I want to show I don't have any use for the red Maple Leaf flag," said Morgan."When you see a red maple leaf, what do you see? A dead maple leaf. Canada is not dead. But a lot of the politicians running Canada are brain dead."Morgan said the current flag was not the flag under which his father and grandfather fought in the Korean War and the two World Wars.He said the rightful Canadian flag should be the Red Ensign, the flag used until 1965. Morgan said he is a former member of the armed forces.Doesn't care what neighbours think-Neighbours have protested about his display of upside-down Canadian flags on a wire fence facing the South Musquash Road.But Morgan said he does not care what people think and won't take the flags down.James Irving, the grounds supervisor at Branch 69 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Saint John, said he understands why some people are still attached to the Red Ensign. "He has a point because we left thousands of boys and girls, men and women overseas under the Union Jack. It was the flag they died for and died under," he said.Irving said many older veterans respect the old flag but they also know that a lot of soldiers lost their lives under the new flag as well.He said he thinks those veterans would not agree with Morgan's stance against the Maple Leaf flag."They would be utterly appalled," he said."For what we did in Afghanistan that's the flag they were under. WASHINGTON - Sophisticated hackers linked to Russian intelligence services broke into the Democratic National Committee's computer networks and gained access to confidential emails, chats and opposition research on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, people familiar with the breach said Tuesday.The firm, CrowdStrike Inc., said the DNC asked it to investigate a suspected breach of its systems, which began as early as last summer. CrowdStrike said it quickly found traces of two of the best adversaries in the hacking arena, both tied to the Russian government.The newly revealed attacks join a host of high-profile digital breaches affecting current and past White House hopefuls, underscoring vulnerabilities in digital networks that increasingly hold sensitive data about political candidates, their opponents and their donors.DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called the incident serious and said the committee moved quickly to "kick out the intruders and secure our network." The DNC said donor, financial and personal information did not appear to have been accessed by the hackers.But an individual knowledgeable of the breach said at least one year's worth of detailed chats, emails and opposition research on Trump were stolen. That kind of research, a staple of political campaigns, often contains detailed information — sometimes factual and sometimes specious — about a candidate's personal and professional history.The individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the breach, said DNC officials first learned about the hack in late April when its technology staff discovered malware on its computers.CrowdStrike reported Tuesday that one group of hackers was able to execute computer code remotely on systems running Microsoft Windows. Another was capable of recording keystrokes.Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said last month that U.S. officials have seen indications of foreign hackers spying on the presidential candidates. He said the U.S. intelligence community expects more cyber threats against the campaigns.Foreign hacking was rampant during the 2008 presidential election, and President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were targets of Chinese cyberattacks in the 2012 campaign. In 2008, Obama and Republican nominee Sen. John McCain were also targeted.CrowdStrike said one of the hacking groups identified in the DNC attack, dubbed Cozy Bear, had previously infiltrated unclassified networks at the White House, the State Department and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.Another group detected, called Fancy Bear, had targeted private and public sector networks around the world since the mid-2000s. The two groups involved in the DNC hacking had penetrated the system separately, CrowdStrike said.Dmitri Alperovitch, CrowdStrike's co-founder and chief technology officer, said the hackers specifically targeted the DNC's research department and obtained opposition documents prepared about Trump. The federal government spent more than $15 million on hotels alone to house Syrian refugees after announcing last December its ambitious plan to resettle 25,000 displaced Syrians.The total sum disclosed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada this week comes to $25.6 million in external contracts from mid-December to the end of March.From Dec. 21 to the end of March, the immigration department housed refugees in at least 17 different hotels in major cities across the country.The largest bill was from the Quality Hotel and Suites Toronto Airport East, which received $2.96 million, followed by the $2.53 million paid to the Quality Hotel Dorval.The Sheraton Guildford Hotel received $1.995 million; the Travelodge $2.147 million; and Travelodge Aeroport de Dorval, $1.945 million.With critics suggesting the federal government simply did not have the capability to undertake the massive resettlement, the department engaged defence contractor Logistik Unicorp Inc. on Dec. 7 – a contract worth $5.274 million.The department spent a total of $7 million on transportation, including flights, taxis and bus service, and $3 million on furniture for the refugees – for a total of $25.6 million.The department was not able to immediately respond to a request for comment from Yahoo Canada News.Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel says she’s frustrated with the way the plan has unfolded so far.“I think they went into this without a real plan,” she tells Yahoo Canada News.“I feel like this government took a lot of nice, glossy photos on the front end of this and they really haven’t thought about the transition of these refugees, their lives in Canada, over the long term.”Rempel is part of a parliamentary committee studying the refugee response, with a report likely next fall.“We’ve had refugees come into committee and talk about how they’re living in bug-infested apartments. We know that many refugees spent an extended amount of time in hotels,” she says.Refugees have testified that they’ve had trouble accessing language training and finding jobs.Committee members asked officials and the minister last week for a tally on hotel spending and were told they didn’t have the information, Rempel says.Meanwhile, private sponsor groups have told the committee that they had apartments available that they’ve now released because they did not have families to put in them.“So there’s absolutely no co-ordination,” Rempel says.The Liberals originally estimated the entire initiative would cost $250 million.“It’s significantly more than $250 million. It’s nearing a billion with no end in sight,” she says.Last week, Immigration Minister John McCallum defended the expenses under questioning in the House of Commons.NDP MP Jenny Kwan pointed out that the federal government spent more than $2.3 million to renovate Canadian military bases, which were to serve as temporary lodging for the Syrian refugees.“They were never used, because at the last minute, the government changed course and decided to house the refugees in hotels at the cost of over $14 million,” Kwan said during question period on Friday.“Mr. Speaker, I am afraid the honourable member is missing the forest for the trees,” McCallum replied.“The good news is that those military bases were set up as a contingency. The fact that we did not need them meant that the government saved tens of millions of dollars. We were scheduled to spend $319 million, but we actually spent $136 million less than was predicted. Therefore, we saved a lot of money.”Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a campaign promise to bring 25,000 government-sponsored refugees to Canada by the end of 2015.Logistical challenges forced the government to postpone that date to the end of February and expand the target to all Syrian refugees, including those sponsored privately.Based on internal government documents, CBC has previously reported that the actual sum of commercial flights to bring refugees to Canada tallied $30 million in the same period.The Liberal government initially earmarked $678 million over six years for the resettlement of 25,000 Syrians. Another $245 million was promised in the spring budget to bring an additional 10,000 displaced Syrians to Canada this year.

A Filipino man has applied for refugee status in Canada claiming the lives of his young family have been threatened by members of what he calls a "cult-like" Christian church in the Philippines — and he alleges to CBC News he's still being stalked in Metro Vancouver.Lowell Menorca, 39, a former un-ordained minister in the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), or Church of Christ, brought his allegations to the CBC in his first major English language interview.His case has generated headline news coverage in the Philippines.Iglesia Ni Cristo is the third largest faith in the Philippines after Catholicism and Islam, and it has hundreds of churches around the world, including many in Canada.The INC preaches these are "the last days," and only its members will be saved. According to the church's doctrines, to be expelled means losing your salvation.Menorca says the INC expelled him after a split developed among descendants of the man who founded the church. He says he was suspected of being an anonymous blogger who had accused INC leaders of overspending and corruption.Menorca believes the leadership has wasted vast amounts of money on things such as a private Airbus jetliner (since sold) and the construction of the Philippine Arena, the biggest covered stadium in the world, built to celebrate the INC's centennial in 2014.He alleges he was illegally detained by Church officials, arrested by police and then hit with more than 40 lawsuits for libel for speaking out about his alleged treatment from the church."This is an orchestrated effort by the church to intimidate me," says Menorca, "to put me behind bars, ultimately to silence me."But officials with the Iglesia Ni Cristo call Menorca's claims "fabricated" and "devious."They say he's fleeing prosecution, not persecution, in the Philippines, and they expect the Canadian government to deny his refugee application.The INC flew it's San Francisco-based supervising attorney to Vancouver to answer the CBC's questions about the case."It's so obvious to see that he's fabricated this whole story", says Rommel V. Among them: "You can run but you can't hide" and "You will not be able to escape, you are an animal, you are evil!!!"Intimidation continues in B.C.: Menorca-Menorca said his family next fled to Thailand, seeking a safe haven.But while he had a valid Visa to the US, his daughter and his pregnant wife Jingky did not.Menorca says he eventually made the difficult decision to board a flight to Seattle that routed through Vancouver. When he landed on Canadian soil he immediately approached immigration officials and sought refugee status in the hope he can bring his wife and child here.However, he claims he has continued to be harassed by INC members here in Metro Vancouver, where there are nine congregations, according to the church's website.Photographs of Menorca recently shopping in a local shopping mall were posted by another Facebook user who appears to be an INC follower.Again, accompanying comments — seen by CBC News — said things such as:"Watch your back, someone is behind you".One poster writes: "Exact location(?)"The response: "Guildford and Metrotown".CBC News messaged the Facebook users who had posted images of Menorca in the mall.One poster referred all questions to the western Canada ecclesiastical division of the INC.Menorca also has video he says is of four burly Filipino men from Washington State who arrived unannounced at a recent Burnaby prayer meeting organised by dissidents of the church — including Menorca.Church says Menorca "fabricates"-When asked about these incidents, including the apparently secretly-taken photographs of Menorca, the INC's North American lawyer again dismisses Menorca's version of the events."He makes up all these stories. He fabricates them … He's very ingenious. I mean, very devious" says Rommel V. San Pedro."Who's not to say Menorca didn't get his friends to take a picture, "X" out his daughter's face, put it on the car, and allege that members of the church did that.""You can easily make up identities on Facebook and then create a scenario or create an image of something like that happening. But who's to say that's members of the Church of Christ?"San Pedro says the numerous libel cases launched against Menorca in the Philippines are from individuals, and church leaders "don't really care about Menorca.""We care about our members. Our Lord Jesus Christ said if one sheep goes off, the shepherd goes after that lost sheep. And we have members who have been affected, confused by his rhetoric, confused by his fabrications," he said."What we're doing is we're visiting the members and we're explaining to them what he's doing, and we're encouraging our members to stay strong in the faith."Controversy within the church-The INC was founded in 1914 by Felix Manalo, who claimed to be the last messenger of God.The founder's grandson, Eduardo V. Manalo, is now the executive minister of the church.The Philippine press has reported his siblings have raised issues over his authoritarian leadership, and have been fenced off within the church's central compound. The internal dispute remains on-going.Eduardo V. Manalo, known as "EVM", is revered by his supporters.A Youtube music video, produced by INCMedia Services, is entitled "I am One with EVM", and includes the lyrics, "Appointed by God in these last days, is our Church Administrator," and "For the church he will give his very life, and so we will remain on his side."Leonora Angeles, associate professor at the University of BC's Institute of Social Justice, says the INC has encouraged a cult-like veneration of its leader."Observers of the church might say it has some cult-like characteristics ... you also have a very authoritarian leadership. What the inner circle dictates, everyone must follow."Church lawyer Rommel V. San Pedro denies the INC is a cult."To label an organization as a cult is unfair. Why do we say we're the one true church? Our teachings ... every single doctrine can be found in the Bible."Church has 'vast influence': expert-CBC News also sought out an expert on the INC in the Philippines.Ramon Casiple, executive director of the independent nonprofit Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, has studied the church's influence on its members and on Philippine politics.He says he doesn't discount the possibility the church's leadership has come down "swiftly and hard on whom they thought were the propagators of those stories" alleging corruption and lavish spending by the INC's leaders."There is a definite division," he says, referring to the split within the church, "But we don't know how far the division is going because the church is basically secretive and that's one of the basic tenets — that they don't go public on anything internal," says Casiple.He believes the fears of Menorca and other alleged INC church members who have been expelled are "well founded because of the vast influence of the church on the politicians here, and on the military and police and even local officials."Menorca has claimed to Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board that he's not safe in the Philippines, because he alleges police and government officials are often INC members, or heavily influenced by the church, since the INC encourages its parishioners to "block vote" — delivering key votes in tight races.That gives the small church a large influence, according to his refugee claim.Menorca hopes the Canadian government will take all of this into account, when the Immigration and Refugee Board hears his application for refugee status.Through tears, he remembered how he was treated here, when he arrived at Vancouver airport."The officer told me, 'You came to the right country.' I just felt some kind of relief, that hopefully this country will protect people like me, can protect my family, my wife and my daughter.""I'm hoping that Canada can be a safe refuge for people who have been oppressed, by a church of all things."The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada will rule on the validity of Menorca's claims and allegations, later this summer.

WASHINGTON - The gunman at the Orlando gay nightclub had "strong indications of radicalization" and was likely inspired by foreign terrorist organizations, the FBI director said Monday.James Comey also said the man, who has been identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, spoke with a 911 operator three times during the deadly event. At one point, Comey said, he pledged loyalty on the call to the head of the Islamic State group.Comey's remarks offered further detail on the shootings that left 49 victims dead and more than 50 hurt, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Mateen died in a gun battle with police.President Barack Obama said Monday the killer was inspired by extremist information over the internet, calling it an apparent example of the "homegrown extremism" that U.S. officials have been worrying about for years.Mateen had twice come to the FBI's attention before Sunday's shooting, the FBI said. It investigated him for 10 months, beginning in May 2013, because he had made "inflammatory and contradictory" statements about ties to terrorist groups that caught his coworkers' attention.Mateen was working at the time as a contract security guard at a local courthouse. He has held a Florida license to be an armed security officer since at least 2011, state records show.The FBI director said that Mateen at the time claimed family connections to al-Qaida and said he was a member of Hezbollah, which Comey said "is a Shia terrorist organization that is a bitter enemy of the so-called Islamic State."Mateen had also told coworkers "he hoped that law enforcement would raid his apartment and assault his wife and child so that he could martyr himself," Comey said.The FBI's Miami field office opened a preliminary investigation to determine whether Mateen was "possibly a terrorist." FORT PIERCE, Fla. - He was a body builder and a security guard, a religious man who attended the local mosque and wanted to become a police officer.Early Sunday, 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Police said 49 victims died and 53 were wounded. Mateen also was killed.Mateen was the son of an Afghan immigrant who had a talk show in the United States, the nature of which was not entirely clear: A former Afghan official said the program was pro-Taliban and a former colleague said it was enthusiastically pro-American.He attended evening prayer services at the city's Islamic Center three to four times a week, most recently with his young son, said Imam Syed Shafeeq Rahman. Although he was not very social, he also showed no signs of violence, Rahman said. He said he last saw Mateen on Friday."When he finished prayer he would just leave," Rahman told The Associated Press. "He would not socialize with anybody. He would be quiet. He would be very peaceful."He was also bipolar, Mateen's ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, told reporters in Boulder, Colorado."He was mentally unstable and mentally ill," Yusufiy said. Although records show the couple didn't divorce for two years after the marriage, Yusiufiy said she was actually only with Mateen for four months because he was abusive. She said he would not let her speak to her family and that family members had to come and literally pull her out of his arms.Authorities immediately began investigating whether Sunday's attack was an act of terrorism. A law enforcement official said the gunman made a 911 call from the nightclub professing allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The law enforcement official is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.Yusufiy said she was "devastated, shocked, started shaking and crying" when she heard about the shooting, but she attributed the violence to Mateen's mental illness, not any alliance with terrorist groups-Rahman agreed."My personal opinion is that this has nothing to do with ISIS," he said.On Monday, the shooter's father, Seddique Mir Mateen, spoke to reporters outside his Port St. Lucie home about his son, saying "what he did was the act of a terrorist.""I apologize for what my son did. The name refers to the Durand line, the long disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.Tarin said Seddique Mir Mateen had a television show on which they discussed issues facing Afghanistan."It's shocking," he said about the shooting. "(Omar Mateen's) father loves this country."Some of Seddique Mir Mateen's shows were taped and later posted on YouTube. During one episode, a sign in the background read: "Long live the U.S.A! Long live Afghanistan. ... Afghans are the best friends to the U.S.A."But a former Afghan official said the "Durand Jirga Show" appears on Payam-e-Afghan, a California-based channel that supports ethnic solidarity with the Afghan Taliban, which are mostly Pashtun. Viewers from Pashtun communities in the United States regularly call in to the channel to espouse support for Pashtun domination of Afghanistan over the nation's minorities, including Hazaras, Tajiks and Uzbeks, the official said.The "Durand Jirga Show" expresses support for the Taliban, has an anti-Pakistan slant, complains about foreigners in Afghanistan and criticizes U.S. actions there, the official said. Seddique Mir Mateen lavished praise on current Afghan President Ashraf Ghani when he appeared on the show in January 2014, but he has since denounced the Ghani government, according to the official, who said that on Saturday, Seddique Mateen appeared on the show dressed in military fatigues and used his program to criticize the current Afghan government.He also announced on that show that he would run in the next Afghan presidential election, said the official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because he did not want to be linked to coverage of the shooting.In 2013, Omar Mateen made inflammatory comments to co-workers, and he was interviewed twice, FBI agent Ronald Hopper said. He called those interviews inconclusive. In 2014, Hopper said, officials found that Mateen had ties to an American suicide bomber. ORLANDO, Fla. - The last of the bodies were removed from an Orlando gay nightclub overnight as investigators dug into the background of the gunman, who called 911 to profess allegiance to the Islamic State during the attack that left 49 victims dead.At the White House, President Barack Obama said Monday there is no clear evidence so far that gunman Omar Mateen was directed by the extremist group. He said Mateen was inspired by radical information over the internet, calling it another apparent example of "homegrown extremism."Wielding an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a handgun, Mateen opened fire at the crowded Pulse Orlando club early Sunday in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history. Lockdowns at University of Toronto, as police search for 'suspicious person' in black clothing, mask-[CBC]-June 13, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Members of Toronto police's emergency task force are searching buildings at the University of Toronto for a person dressed in black, wearing a mask and carrying a black backpack after receiving multiple reports of a "suspicious person" on campus Monday morning. Chief Mark Saunders told reporters at the scene that the mask the person was wearing appeared to be a surgical mask and when asked about the backpack he said that "they haven't found anything right now." A second man was taken into custody during the search, but Saunders said that investigation is unrelated to the report at the university."There are security cameras that are around," said Saunders. "We're working in conjunction with the U of T police and we're trying to put the pieces together.""It's very early right now, so it's going to take a little more time to get everything so we can have as best a picture as possible to determine what this is all about," said Saunders.Police say that security at the university made the first report after seeing someone wearing a mask in a building under construction at 6 Hoskin Ave. Police also received another report of a person with a gun in the area, and are trying to determine whether that was a police officer or a suspicious person."We have not seen a picture of any firearms at this point in time," said Saunders. "There have been a few people who have said they've seen a suspicious person that fits the likeness of the photo that was shown to me."A witness took the picture that officers are using as a reference, it did not come from security footage, although they are hoping that surveillance video "can enhance it further.""That picture did not indicate or show a firearm," said Saunders, adding that "someone else" made the comment about seeing a gun, which is why the emergency task force was called in.Police are still trying to make contact with the person who made the initial report of seeing a gun to get a "cleaner picture" of what they saw. I don’t have a panacea to prevent terrorism, but amid all the hand-wringing and mud-slinging in the wake of Sunday’s massacre in Orlando, what’s striking — and unforgivable — is the absence of a strategic, international, coordinated bid to so much as try.We can all spend the next few days and weeks arguing about whether US President Barack Obama should have called the mass killing a case of Islamist terror, or whether that would have been a rush to judgment; and, for that matter, whether Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai should have invoked the occupation when discussing last Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Sarona Market, or whether that risked affording untenable legitimacy to the killings of four Israeli innocents. We can exercise ourselves, dominate the airwaves, and spend fortunes fighting and determining elections over what people are saying about terrorism. But wouldn’t it be smarter — and wouldn’t it be better for our prospects of staying alive — if we expended rather more serious thought, and budget, on the practical task of stopping the death cult extremists? Specifically, that means a great deal more focus on each of three key areas: defending more effectively against the killers; taking the battle to them where necessary and feasible; and preventing the creation of the next waves.Israel, though manifestly imperfect, has much to teach the world about defending against terrorism. As the Sarona attack bitterly underlined we have not halted it completely, but we have gradually improved techniques to make it harder for the killers to achieve their goals. The construction of the West Bank security barrier, relentless intelligence work, military operations to arrest would-be bombers and those who arm and inspire them, security coordination with the Palestinian Authority, the deployment of security guards at places where people gather in large numbers — all these and other steps gradually defeated the Second Intifada in the early years of this century, when our buses and our malls and our restaurants were being blown up on a weekly basis, and prevented a resurgence on a similar scale ever since.Again, we are emphatically imperfect: Better intelligence, more security guards at Sarona, and a completed security fence would likely have averted last Wednesday’s killings. It is beyond scandalous that, more than a decade on, the West Bank barrier is still not finished, and the two Palestinian terrorists were thus able to enter Israel through one of the gaps.But Israel has learned, bloodily, a great deal about keeping terrorists at bay, and when politicians around the Western world wailed, in the wake of last November’s terrorist onslaught in Paris, that they simply could not deploy security guards at every concert arena, soccer stadium, restaurant, et al, we Israelis said to ourselves, Well, actually, you can. And, tragically, you may have to.Get serious about defensive action, allocate the necessary resources, and you self-evidently raise your prospects of thwarting the killers. Reading about how Omar Mateen, the Orlando mass murderer, had twice been questioned by the FBI but then slipped off the radar after those interviews proved inconclusive, I was reminded of what Malcolm Hoenlein, the veteran head of US Jewry’s Conference of Presidents, said to me in an interview in February. The head of a “major security agency” in France, said Hoenlein, had told him that French intelligence had the Charlie Hebdo killers under surveillance until the Friday before that attack, but the agents were then redeployed to what was deemed to be a more pressing case, and thus brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi were not being tracked when, on January 7, they forced their way into the Paris offices of the satirical magazine and gunned down 11 people.If France had budgeted more resources to its security agencies, it might have prevented that attack and the massacres that followed 10 months later. If the overstretched American security agencies are similarly bolstered, maybe the next Omar Mateen will not be able to slide away from the authorities and return with horrifying consequences.When it comes to taking the offensive, again, Israel has more experience than we would have wished, and much of the world has been loath to learn from it. It was the notably Israel-empathetic George W. Bush, not Barack Obama, who told Israel to get out of the West Bank, and do so right away, when prime minister Ariel Sharon was stewarding Operation Defensive Shield in 2002 — destroying the Hamas and Fatah terror networks that were building bombs and training and dispatching suicide bombers. “I expect there to be withdrawal without delay,” Bush said that April, following a dreadful, bloody March in which over 100 Israeli civilians had been killed in terror attacks that culminated in the Netanyahu Passover eve massacre. Had Sharon heeded Bush, let there be no doubt, the bombings would have continued. Had Israel ceased its intermittent incursions into Palestinian cities ever since, Israel would now be in the midst of another full-fledged intifada, rather than what by our standards is a “low-level” terror war.In considering when a more proactive stance might be appropriate, it seems to me that failing to support Iranians’ efforts to stand up to their regime, doing one’s best to ignore an escalating civil war in Syria for years, and now watching unhelpfully from the side as Egypt’s president attempts to marginalize Islamic extremism, are not the smartest approaches. Not when Tehran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, when the Syrian civil war has prompted a vast river of refugees with who knows how many killers hiding among them, and when Egypt could so easily fall again into the grip of the Muslim Brotherhood. The West cannot afford to try to disengage from the Middle East. Its extremists bite back. Sometimes, the enemy has to be tackled at source — prudently, cool-headedly, but tackled, nonetheless. Where is the concerted international effort to ban, defund and marginalize extremist leaders and teachers the world over, using every ounce of diplomatic and economic leverage that can be mustered? Finally, and most importantly, the leaderships of those countries that delight in the gift of being alive need to focus strategic attention, and resources, on fighting extremism at its root — where tomorrow’s killers are being imbued with hatred, and are attaining the skills and means to make that hatred fatally plain. We may hear in the coming days, as we have in the wake of previous attacks, how it was that the Orlando killer was radicalized. Which spiritual leaders he heeded. Which websites he frequented. Where he gained practical information in preparing to carry out his devastating crime.The political leaders, the spiritual leaders, the conventional and social media outlets, the educational frameworks that are breeding tomorrow’s killers continue to disseminate their toxins with near-impunity. Some of this dissemination of hatred can be tackled by the free world in the free world. Where, for instance, are the potent partnerships between politicians, jurists, intelligence agencies and internet platforms to grapple with the spread of murderous expertise online? And where is the concerted international effort to ban, defund and marginalize extremist leaders and teachers the world over, using every ounce of diplomatic and economic leverage that can be mustered? Right now, untold numbers of would-be killers are honing their capabilities, seeking their targets, preparing to strike. Worse still, countless more potential death cult recruits are gradually being wooed to follow them. Shrill and contemptuous mud-slinging might provide a vent for fear and frustration. But it’s not going to win the war against terrorism.

The Shas party said Monday it would continue to seek the dismissal of Channel 10’s new board chairman, Rami Sadan, who is accused of making racist statements.In a meeting earlier in the day between Shas chairman Aryeh Deri and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Deri demanded that Sadan be fired “due to his racist comments against Shas and against the movement’s voters.”Sadan is accused of making disparaging remarks about Deri, who heads the Sephardi Orthodox party, as well about Mizrahi Israelis of African and Middle Eastern descent, initially reported by the Haaretz daily on June 2.The Knesset hearing to discuss Sadan’s fate was canceled on Monday because the staff of the news station did not show up.The Knesset Economic Affairs Committee was meant to discuss Sadan’s appointment as well as the protection of press freedom in Israel’s commercial news channels. Representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Communications Ministry and Channel 10 board members and workers were slated to attend.Committee chairman Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union) made the decision to cancel the hearing.“I take this issue very seriously and I do not intend to ignore the fact that the management of Channel 10 decided not to attend this hearing,” Cabel said.“It is not right for a media organization to behave like this. Rami Sadan informed me that he was sick, and the management told me it was inconvenient.”Sadan, a political lobbyist and former close associate of the Netanyahu family, was quoted by Haaretz as having told the Channel 10 News board of directors: “Let’s tell the truth: I, like you, part of the elite, hate the Shas movement and that thief Aryeh Deri. But we, as the elite, have to broaden the channel’s circles and appeal to the audience of Shas, to Massouda from Sderot,” using a stereotype referring to a person of Mizrahi descent living on Israel’s periphery.Deri served a prison sentence between 2000 and 2002 for graft, before resuming his political career ahead of the 2015 Knesset elections. The interior minister is currently under investigation on new graft suspicions.Immediately after the comments were published, Shas called on Netanyahu — who is also communications minister — to fire Sadan, threatening to break coalition discipline and skip Knesset votes until he did. Shas MKs have stayed away from the plenum, entering only to vote against an opposition bill on conversion.Without Shas’s seven Knesset members, the coalition will have just 59 votes out of the 120-seat plenum-Though Sadan has denied making the controversial statement, two officials from the TV station have come forward saying he had in fact made the remarks, though their versions differed slightly from Haaretz’s.

An East Jerusalem terrorist who killed three people on a bus in the capital in October was convicted by Jerusalem’s District Court Monday on three counts of murder, seven counts of attempted murder and aiding the enemy in wartime.The conviction came after the court in March rejected a plea bargain struck between the prosecution and the defense when defendant Bilal Abu Ghanem refused to recognize the authority of the court.Abu Ghanem, a Jabel Mukaber resident and Hamas supporter, will be sentenced at a later date. The prosecution is seeking three consecutive life sentences for the killings and another 70 years for the attempted murders.As part of the nixed plea bargain, which would seen have seen seven counts of attempted murder dropped from his charge sheet, Abu Ghanem was to state his confession to the court. Then the judge was expected to convict him on three counts of murder.But when the moment came, Abu Ghanem refused to stand and make his confession to the court, even at the explicit request of presiding Judge Rivka Friedman-Feldman. She then called for a short recess and instructed Abu Ghanem’s legal counsel to explain court procedures to the defendant.After the break, Abu Ghanem’s attorney told the court that his client had doubled down on his refusal to comply with procedure, prompting the judge to rescind the plea bargain.“In light of the circumstances, in which the defendant has refused to stand or address this court, the court does not recognize any deal reached between the two parties,” it said in a statement.According to the indictment handed down by the court in November, Abu Ghanem and another man, Baha Alyan, boarded Egged bus 78 in Jerusalem’s Armon Hanatziv neighborhood on the morning of October 13 of last year, and began shooting and stabbing passengers.The two men were motivated to carry out the attack in retaliation for Israeli “intrusions in Al-Aqsa” on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, and the “settlers who murder small children,” the charge sheet said.The attack claimed the lives of Haviv Haim, 78, and Alon Govberg, 51. Richard Lakin, 76, who was critically wounded, died some two weeks later. Over a dozen people were injured in the attack.Police who arrived at the scene shot and killed Alyan. Abu Ghanem was shot and injured, and police took him into custody.In January, Alyan’s and Abu Ghanem’s family homes in Jabel Mukaber were demolished by Israeli security forces.
