CHERVONYI ZHOVTEN, Ukraine (Reuters) - Villagers in eastern Ukraine have told Reuters they saw a missile flying directly overhead just before a Malaysian airliner was shot out of the sky on July 17 last year, providing the most detailed accounts to date that suggest it was fired from territory held by pro-Russian rebels.The accounts from four villagers of Chervonyi Zhovten, which was then, and is now, controlled by the rebels, are significant because they indicate the rocket was in the early stages of its flight path.That would mean it must have been launched from rebel ground nearby, challenging the suggestion of Moscow and the separatists that the plane was brought down by the Ukrainian military. At the time, the nearest Ukrainian-held area was about 6 km (3.7 miles) away.Ukraine and its Western allies have said it was the rebels who shot down the airliner, using a Russian-made BUK anti-aircraft missile system. All 298 people on board were killed.Until now, videos, photographs and accounts from residents have pointed to a BUK battery being delivered to the rebel-held town of Snizhne, 7 km north of Chervonyi Zhovten, on July 17, and then driven away from the area some time later. Its precise location at the time the plane was shot down has never been confirmed.Now one of the villagers has told Reuters that a missile battery was positioned in a field near Chervonyi Zhovten on the day the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed to earth. A former rebel fighter corroborated this.Ukraine's defense ministry declined to comment for this story. A top rebel commander, Andrei Purgin, said the separatists did not have any weapon capable of downing a plane at cruise altitude."You can come up with whatever you want. The most that we, the rebels, were operating is the PZRK (shoulder-launched missile system). The ceiling for the PZRK is up to 4 km," he said.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was up to a Dutch-led international investigation to determine what happened. "The Russian side awaits that information impatiently," he said.The downing of the plane was a turning point in the conflict in Ukraine, in which around 6,000 people have been killed since last April. It persuaded many Western governments that the Russian-backed rebels were a dangerous threat and stiffened their resolve to impose new sanctions on separatist leaders and on Moscow.

DIGGING POTATOES

On the afternoon of July 17, Valentina Kovalenko was digging up potatoes in her garden in Chervonyi Zhovten, a village whose name translates as Red October in honor of Russia's Communist revolution of 1917."It took off, at first we thought that a plane was crashing. But it was a rocket," said Kovalenko, 45, who then saw what she thought was smoke coming from the 'Progress' mine in Torez, a town 9.5 km away to the north-west.Her daughter Anastasia Kovalenko, 14, said she saw a rocket flying over the village, and then a plane in the distance blowing up.Olga Krasilnikova, 30, also said she saw a rocket, some time between 4 and 5 p.m. "I saw it was flying, flew right over me. From that side," she said, pointing to the outskirts of the village . "I saw smoke in the sky, then I heard an explosion and I saw a huge blue (cloud of) smoke."MH17, flying over eastern Ukraine towards the Russian border, came down around 4:20 p.m. local time. The biggest concentration of debris was found near Hrabove, about 20 km from Chervonyi Zhovten. Older BUK rockets have a range of around 25 to 35 km; the most modern can reach up to 45 km.Since last July, gaining access to the village has been difficult because of fighting in surrounding areas, but a Reuters reporter was able to reach Chervonyi Zhovten in February."My mother and I were in the yard when it happened," said Pyotr Fedotov, a 58-year-old resident. "There was such a bang that we involuntarily sat down, in the yard, our legs gave way underneath us. Then we got curious and immediately went to the other side of the house to take a look.""The rocket was here, it wiggled around, then some kind of rocket stage separated, and then, somewhere toward Lutuhyne, Torez, I saw the plane fall apart in the air. It was only later that we found out it was a Boeing,” Fedotov said.Missiles from a BUK battery can often zig-zag through the air for a few seconds after launch before their onboard radar locks on and steers the missile towards the target, according to video footage of test launches posted on the Internet.Taken together, the accounts do not conclusively prove the missile launched from near Chervonyi Zhovten was the one that brought down the airliner, because none of the villagers saw it actually being launched.Nor could they shed light on a contention of officials in Kiev and in Western states, that the BUK missile battery was brought in from Russia and was operated by a Russian crew. Moscow has denied its military is active in eastern Ukraine.

VILLAGE OUTSKIRTS

When interviewed by Reuters, Fedotov, the witness who described the 'wiggling' rocket, at first said on camera that it was fired from territory held by the Ukrainian army. Later, off camera, he said it was launched from a nearby rebel area. Asked why he had originally said the opposite, he said it was because he was afraid of the rebels.He gave a Reuters reporter directions to a field 1.5 km from the village, which he said had been identified to him by local farm workers as the point from which the missile battery had launched the rocket.When Reuters visited the site in February, there were no signs of any missile launch.Russian and separatist officials have said that Ukrainian military aircraft were overhead at the time the Malaysian airliner came down. They have said that if an anti-aircraft missile was launched in the vicinity, it was to bring down a Ukrainian warplane. They have also suggested a Ukrainian fighter aircraft may have shot down the Malaysian airliner.Washington believes that pro-Russian separatists most likely shot down the airliner "by mistake," not realizing it was a civilian passenger flight, U.S. intelligence officials have said..An official of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told Reuters: "Our previous assessment still holds."The investigation into the cause of the disaster is being led by authorities in the Netherlands, as two-thirds of those on board were Dutch. An interim report published in September which was based on data from the aircraft's black box recorders, photographic and radar evidence, and satellite imagery, said the Boeing was brought down by "high energy objects" in its vicinity -- consistent with attack from the air or the ground."The investigation is ongoing and for as long as it is ongoing we cannot give any conclusions," Sara Vernooij, a spokeswoman for the Dutch Safety Board which is handling the case, told Reuters when approached for comment on this story.A former rebel from the separatist Vostok battalion, who for security reasons asked to be identified only by his first name, Igor, told Reuters that a BUK battery was in Chervonyi Zhovten on July 17, and he himself was not far from the village.Igor said the battery’s mission was to discourage Ukrainian Su-25 ground attack jets from attacking separatist targets in the area. U.S. admiral raises alarm over Russian military threat-By Barbara Starr, CNN Pentagon Correspondent-Updated 1:35 PM ET, Fri March 13, 2015

Washington (CNN)The ability of the U.S. and Canadian military to defend North America could be jeopardized by stepped up Russian military activity, according to the commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command.Adm. William Gortney told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that Russia is continuing to work on its program to deploy "long-range conventionally armed cruise missiles," that can be launched from its bomber aircraft, submarines and warships. This is giving the Kremlin "deterrent" options "short of the nuclear threshold," Gortney said.

NORAD chief warns of Russian military threat

"Should these trends continue over time, NORAD will face increased risk in our ability to defend North America against Russian air, maritime and cruise missile threats," he said.Gortney's remarks came in written testimony submitted to the committee."This past year has marked a notable increase in Russian military assertiveness," on the world stage, he said. Russian heavy bomber aircraft flew more patrols outside Russian airspace "than in any year since the Cold War," though he did not offer a specific number. There have also been increased Russian air patrols across the coastlines of Europe.The NORAD commander later said that Russian flights, even down the English Channel, are at a pace "that has not been what they've done in the past, even back with the Soviet Union."Under NORAD operations, the U.S. and Canada routinely send fighter jets into the skies to monitor any Russian military aircraft approaching the U.S. coastline. The Russian operations have not extended to actually flying into U.S. or Canadian airspace, but in the last year Russia is clearly trying to keep a closer eye on NORAD."We have also witnessed improved interoperability between Russian long-range aviation and other elements of the Russian military, including air and maritime intelligence collection platforms positioned to monitor NORAD responses," he said.Gortney said the Russian air patrols, in part, are designed to "communicate its displeasure with Western policies, particularly with regard to Ukraine."One of the security challenges for the U.S. is to determine whether the cruise missiles on its bomber aircraft, submarines and warships are indeed conventional or may be nuclear tipped. When carried aboard submarines, ships and in the internal bays of bombers it's nearly impossible for U.S. intelligence to know with certainty. The concern remains that the Russian deployments of aircraft and ships into Crimea and the Kaliningrad region could give Moscow a platform for the deployment of the weapons that concern the U.S."They can range critical infrastructure in Alaska and in Canada that we rely on for a homeland defense mission," Gortney told senators, explaining the reach of the long-range of the Russian cruise missiles.

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia on Friday rejected U.S. concerns about its use of a former American base in Vietnam for the refueling of Russian bomber flights around U.S. territory in the Pacific, dismissing recent U.S. statements as "puzzling" and "strange".Reuters reported on Wednesday that the United States had asked Vietnam to stop letting Russia use Vietnam's Cam Ranh Bay for tanker aircraft that have refueled nuclear-capable bombers engaged in shows of strength over the Asia-Pacific region.“It is strange to hear such statements from representatives of the state whose armed forces are permanently stationed in a number of Asia-Pacific countries and which continues to increase its level of military activity in the region," Russia's Defense Ministry said.It said U.S. statements that the refueling of Russian bombers from Vietnam could lead to increased regional tensions was "puzzling."The ministry said Russian Air Force activities and cooperation with Vietnam were "carried out in strict accordance with international norms and bilateral agreements are not directed against anyone whatsoever and shall not be a threat to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.”General Vincent Brooks, commander of the U.S. Army in the Pacific, told Reuters last week the planes had conducted "provocative" flights, including around the U.S. Pacific Ocean territory of Guam, home to major American bases.Russia's Defense Ministry said on Jan. 4 that Russian Il-78 tanker aircraft had used Cam Ranh Bay in 2014, enabling the refueling of nuclear-capable TU-95 "Bear" strategic bombers, a statement also reported in Vietnam's state-controlled media.On Thursday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States did not want Russia to use Cam Ranh Bay."We have urged Vietnamese officials to ensure that Russia is not able to use its access to Cam Ranh Bay to conduct activities that could raise tensions in the region," she told a regular news briefing.The Voice of America radio station quoted a spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Hanoi as saying on Thursday that the U.S. request was conveyed to Vietnamese officials last week and that she was unaware of a Vietnamese government response.The Vietnamese government has not responded to requests by Reuters for comment.

On Friday, Russia's Tass news agency quoted Russia's ambassador to Vietnam, Konstantin Vnukov, as saying that Vietnam and Russia were independent sovereign states that "do not need any instructions or recommendations by anyone, and we do not intend to listen to requirements.”Russia and Vietnam are longtime allies, and Moscow was the main backer of Hanoi against the United States in the Vietnam War that ended in 1975.But the current controversy comes at a time of steadily warming ties between Washington and Hanoi, especially in security, given shared concerns about China's growing power and assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.Washington is eager to secure greater access itself to Cam Ranh Bay as part of its strategic "pivot" to Asia to counter China's growing strength. Bird-watching in spring
The spring is considered by many as the best time to visit Israel, and for good reason – hundreds of millions of birds pass through in the course of the great migration and offer us a unique experience. Generally, the best birding during the season as regards to the migration occurs in the southern parts of the country and along the Rift Valley.The season starts in February, peaks between mid March to mid May, and ends in June. However, the best time to see Israel’s spring migration occurs between mid March to mid May during which time the variety of species, and sheer numbers, are exceptional at any scale. The passing decreases from mid-May on and June tends to be the quietest month of the year.It is indeed a dynamic and intriguing season, and since the diversity of species changes from day to day, one must pay attention to the timing of the visit, especially if you are interested in a particular species (or set of species).

Bird-watching in late autumn and winter
Although Israel has a reputation as a major spring and autumn flyway of migrating birds, it is also an important wintering ground for thousands of birds. The season extends between November-February. While November still gets the rearguard of the autumn migration, and especially some scarce migrants with an eastern aroma, it also marks the arrival of mass numbers of wintering birds, especially water birds, cranes and raptors. More than 30,000 Cranes are counted annually in the Hula Valley; with about half of them will remaining for the winter. The best time for bird watching and to explore nature during winter is between the months of November till March. Where to see migrating birds

The Kibbutz Lotan Ecotourism and Birdwatching Center in the Arava Valley is among several prime bird-watching spots during the spring and fall migrations. Other southern hot spots include the Negev desert, Dead Sea and Eilat. In northern Israel, popular bird-watching areas are the Agamon Hula Ornithology and Nature Park, Kibbutz Ma’agan Michael near the southern Carmel Mountains, and the Beit She’an and Jezreel valleys.

Each year hundreds of millions of birds cross over Israel, migrating between their breeding grounds in Europe and Asia and their wintering quarters in the heart of Africa. At dawn in the spring the salt flats north of Eilat are humming with life. Tens of thousands of birds stop off to eat en route to Europe and Asia, while hundreds of ornithologists from around the world enjoy the remarkable spectacle through their binoculars.We estimate that anywhere between 500 million to 1.5 billion birds will fly north this spring from Africa to Europe and Asia, says Dr. Reuven Yosef, director of Eilat’s International Birdwatching Center.This figure represents 200 different species, including 34 types of birds of prey.Our research seems to indicate that between 60%-75% of all the migrating birds fly via Israel, observes Dr. Yosef. Perhaps this is because it is the only land route, and because it offers better access to the breeding grounds in Asia. Eilat, at the northern tip of the Red Sea, is a junction for these birds. Those traveling to Europe carry on straight up to Turkey. Those flying to Eastern Siberia and Central Asia turn right and fly over Jordan.Dr. Yosef notes that when the birds fly south to Africa in the fall they are relatively fresh and rarely stop over in Eilat. But it is a different story in the spring, he added. To reach here in the spring they have flown over 3,500 kilometers of desert. They are exhausted and hungry and the sea blite vegetation on the salt flats north of Eilat offer them their first good meal in a long time.Other types of birds which regularly pass over Eilat include the booted eagle, lesser spotted eagle, snake eagle, imperial eagle, marsh harrier, osprey, black kite and honey buzzard, as well as large numbers of pelicans and storks. Since 1984 the Birdwatching Center in Eilat has been ringing birds in an attempt to keep track of them.

The open desert areas of the Southern Rift Valley and the Southern Negev Plateau hold exciting residents like Trumpeter Finch, Desert Wheatear, Spotted and Crowned Sandgrouse and more. These areas are also important sites for rare and nomadic Desert Larks which peak during March. Temminck's and Hoopoe Larks require searching for and previous springs have produced sightings of the rare and unpredictable Thick-billed, Dunn's and Black crowned Finch Larks.The 8th International Spring Migration Festival is organized by the Israel Ornithological Center and the IBRCE (International Birding and Research Centre Eilat), aims to bring together birders from all around the world again. Illustrated reports of the first six Festivals plus species lists can be found on the festival website, 219 species were recorded during the week in 2007 including a first for Israel. 2008 produced an even higher total of 238 species including a wealth of highly desired rarities such as Caspian and White-tailed Plovers, Turkestan Shrike, Black Bush-Robin and Thick-billed Lark. 2009 produced 221 species with the rarity highlights including Crested Honey Buzzard, Caspian Plover, Black Bush Robin, Bimaculated Lark, Asian Buff-bellied Pipit, Asian Desert Warbler, Hill Sparrow, Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters, Cinereous Bunting and much more. 2010 scored 248 species and 2011 came in with 224 species recorded. 2012 was a record spring for both commoner and rarer birds and came home with a total of 239 species. Migration does not get any more exciting than this!

To cash in on the wealth of birds around, many bird related activities will take place. These will include a choice of free, fully guided tours to the best sites in the region led by field experts, ringing demonstrations, identification workshops, lectures and optional extra tours targeting specific species and regions.The Festival centre will be Agamim Hotel in Eilat, a very comfortable ‘resort’ hotel, and the evening activities, including the welcome dinner and lectures will be held there. The hotel is conveniently located by North Beach, the town centre and main tourist area. All rooms have private facilities and the hotel has gardens, pools, a bar and restaurant.Festival visitors can explore the area in a number of ways during the week:First, several top birding sites are reachable on foot from the hotel, North Beach, Shulamit and other Parks and the southern salt pans. Every day several fully guided minibus tours will leave the hotel, these tours are led by Israel's top birding guides and some of the previous festival’s best birds are found on these tours. Located between three continents -- Europe, Asia and Africa, Israel is at a bottleneck on the migratory birds' flight path-The Hula Valley, in the Galilee, is an important resting and refueling place for migrating birds on their annual journey-The area has become a popular spot for amateur bird watchers and ornithologists. The Sea of Gallilee, where Christ reputedly walked on water, is today home to another miracle of sorts.It is where hundreds of millions of birds migrate across Israel and a paradise for bird watchers. Located west of the Golan Heights, the area is part of the Great Rift Valley, which stretches from northern Syria to central Mozambique in Africa.It is akin to a superhighway of bird migration routes, creating thermal currents that raptors and other birds can ride from central Africa to Europe.Israel is at a bottleneck on the migratory birds' flight path where an estimated 540 species converge. Compare that with 460 species in Germany, which is 20 times bigger.

In late autumn, tens of thousands of common cranes and pelicans flock to the area, as well as more than 25 species of raptors like the imperial eagles and spotted eagles. Some of these birds stay in the area for the entire winter.It is a spectacular sight, and the area has become a popular spot for amateur bird watchers and ornithologists. There is even the Hula Valley Bird Festival held every November.According to Yossi Lessem, director of the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration, every year the Hula Valley's Agamon bird sanctuary attracts 398 bird species, more than 400,000 visitors and 50,000 hardcore bird watchers. Nadav Yisraeli, manager of the Hula Valley Bird Watching Center, has been studying birds here for years.In the middle of the migration season, he will catch hundreds of birds a day, and they will be taken to the ringing station for inspection and measurement.He showed CNN the ringing procedure. "First, I'm going to record the ring number," he said, before moving on to measure the bird's wing length, tail length and weight."We are learning that there are certain species that are doing quite well with the changes," Yisraeli said, "and some species are declining, so we can tell something is happening."One of these change is the war in neighboring Syria."If they arrive on a war zone, and that was land on a stop for them and they can't stop and rest, then they are in a problem," Yisraeli said. "They have to move on and sometimes their body will not be fit for that."Luckily food is abundant in the Hula Valley.In the 1990s, as Israel started to restore its wetlands, more cranes began to stop here and many -- an estimated 30,000 birds -- decided to spend the whole winter in the area.The cranes took a shine to the local peanut crops, costing farmers around $350,000 a year. To avoid conflict between farmers and birds, the Israeli government now provides corn and other bird feed.Tourists can ride along the feeding tractor and the wild birds are hardly disturbed by the gawking visitors.
