A mass shooting in British Columbia has left 10 people dead, including the woman responsible, Canadian police say.Seven people, including the killer, died at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, two others were found in a house in the town and another died on the way to hospital, according to authorities.What's next? Police say they have identified the shooter but will likely never know the motive behind the incidents.Ten people are dead after a woman opened fire at a high school and a home in western Canada before turning the gun on herself, police said.Seven people were found dead on Tuesday inside a high school, including the suspect, in the town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.Two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, and another person died on the way to hospital.Police said the suspect was a woman and confirmed that an active shooter alert describing the shooter "as female in a dress with brown hair" was accurate.At least two other people were hospitalised with serious or life-threatening injuries and as many as 25 people were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.The attack is one of the country's deadliest mass casualty events in recent history.Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was devastated by the "horrific shootings"."My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence," he said.RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said police had identified the shooter but would not release a name.The suspect's motive remained unclear."We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy," Superintendent Floyd said.a police officer speaks in front of a red background in a press conference-He said police were still investigating how the victims were connected to the shooter."As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located multiple victims," RCMP said in a statement.Police earlier said officers were working to determine whether a second suspect was involved."This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response," Superintendent Floyd said."Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident."The RCMP asked residents of Tumbler Ridge, which has a population of about 2,400 people, to stay inside as additional police resources were being deployed from neighbouring areas.The Peace River South School District said there was a "lockdown and secure and hold" at both the secondary school and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School.Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, told reporters that an "excess" of resources, including RCMP and ambulance support, had been sent to the community.He said he did not want to release any more information over concerns that it might jeopardise the safety of the ongoing operation.He urged those in the community to stay where they are."We do understand that a few folks are out looking for loved ones, and again, please, please go back to your homes and shelter in place and allow the amazing people of the RCMP to make this community, this beautiful community, safe again," Mr Neufeld said.Tumbler Ridge is more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta.The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from grades 7 to 12.AP/Reuters.

TORONTO, Canada — A mass shooting in a remote part of western Canada killed nine people on Tuesday, including seven who were shot at a secondary school, before the suspect took their own life.The killings occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, a picturesque mountain valley town in the foothills of the Rockies.A total of 27 people were wounded, including two with serious injuries and 25 others who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.An initial active shooter alert described the assailant as “female in a dress with brown hair,” according to Reuters, but the RCMP declined to provide any details on the suspect’s identity in a press conference on Tuesday.Police said an alert was issued about an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon.As police searched the school, they found six people shot dead. A seventh person with a gunshot wound died while en route to hospital.Separately, police found two more dead bodies at a residence in Tumbler Ridge.This residence is “believed to be connected to the incident,” police said.At the school, “an individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury,” police said.In a statement, the municipality of Tumbler Ridge said: “There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.”Tumbler Ridge student Darian Quist told the public broadcaster CBC that he was in his mechanics class when there was an announcement that the school was in lockdown.He said that initially he “didn’t think anything was going on,” but started receiving “disturbing” photos about the carnage at the school.Then “it set in what was happening,” Quist said.He said he stayed in lockdown for more than two hours when police stormed in, ordering everyone to put their hands up before escorting them out of the school.Darian’s mother Shelley Quist, also interviewed, said she embraced her son when they finally connected after the site was declared safe.“He’s not going to be out of my sight for a while now,” she told the CBC.Canadian PM cancels planned trip to Munich, citing shooting-Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the “horrific” shooting.“My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence,” Carney said in a social media post.Carney suspended his planned trip to the Munich Security Conference, his office said, citing the shooting.British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable.”Mass shootings are extremely rare in Canada, but 11 people were killed in Vancouver in April during a vehicle attack that targeted a Filipino cultural festival.RCMP’s northern district commander Ken Floyd described the incident as “a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation.”“This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation,” he added.The RCMP said officers were searching other homes and properties in the community to see if there were additional sites connected to the incident.Tumbler Ridge, a quiet town with roughly 2,400 residents, is more than 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) north of Vancouver, British Columbia’s largest city.“We are devastated by the loss of life and the profound impact this tragedy has had on families, students, staff, and our entire town,” the municipality said.Federal opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called it a “senseless act of violence.”

Darian described how he and his classmates barricaded the doors while the school was under lockdown. His mother, Shelley, said she stayed with Darian on the phone and could hear the moment police came to escort them to safety.Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and his mother Shelley Quist, spoke to CBC Radio West host Sarah Penton about what happened.Darian said shortly after he got to his class at 1:30 p.m. local time, an alarm sounded in the hallways with instructions to close the doors because of a lockdown.He said the doors were closed for a while, when he and his classmates realized something was wrong. He said he was receiving photos on his phone from the scene.“We got tables and barricaded the doors” for over two hours, he said, until police arrived to escort them out of the school. Once outside, he met up with his mother at the community centre a few hundred metres away. "There are no words that can ease the fear and pain that events like this cause in a school community," she wrote.
2 hours ago-‘Hold each other close,’ student says- Jess Chin-Darian said Tumbler Ridge, which has students from Grades 7 to 12, is a small school. He estimates there are only about 20 or so students in his graduating class. “The reality of it all is starting to set in,” he said. “I believe I knew somebody, but everything is still very fresh.”Darian said the school issued a statement saying it would be working with the RCMP to help students reintegrate once school resumes. He said the situation is “almost surreal.”“It felt like I was somewhere that I had only seen across a TV.”Asked if he had anything to say to the community of Tumbler Ridge, Darian said people should “hold each other close.”“We are going to be able to get through this,” he said.
