GENOA (Reuters) - Italian rescue workers used jackhammers and cranes on Friday to lift giant slabs of concrete from the Genoa highway bridge collapse, hoping to find survivors buried in the rubble of the disaster that killed at least 38 people.A fire held up part of the operation in the early morning, sending up clouds of white smoke before being extinguished. A spark from metal-cutting equipment was thought to have caused the blaze that started in a warehouse under the ruined bridge.But then the more than 300 firefighters who have been working non-stop since Tuesday resumed their task. As many as 20 people are still unaccounted for, Genoa's chief prosecutor said.Chances of finding survivors appeared to be slim. Vehicles on the highway that links the port city to the French border plummeted 50 meters (165 feet) to the ground when a 200-metre (660-foot) stretch of the viaduct collapsed on Tuesday.Firefighters, who are using sniffer dogs as well as heavy machinery, have not yet reached all the cars."We are trying to find points where we can penetrate these incredibly heavy slabs. Then the earth-moving equipment moves in to create a passageway where the dogs can enter," firefighter Stefano Zanut said at the scene.Rescuers are hoping that the large chunks of debris may have created a "triangle of survival" when they fell, where someone could still be alive, he said.FUNERAL-Some 600 people have had to leave their apartments below the remaining spans of the bridge for fear of further collapse. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura.But she added that "nevertheless, a meeting between Germany, France, Turkey and Russia could make sense — this must be well-prepared, so there is no date yet." She said leaders' advisers will do preparatory work to decide whether it's worth holding such a meeting.Syria is expected to be on the agenda when Merkel meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany on Saturday.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AFP) — Two million Muslims gather in Saudi Arabia this week for the hajj as the annual pilgrimage becomes increasingly hi-tech with apps to help the faithful navigate Islam’s holiest sites.This year the hajj comes with the ultra-conservative kingdom witnessing an unprecedented pace of change, finally ending a ban on women driving while remaining firm in the face of any dissent.One of the five pillars of Islam, the hajj is expected to draw two million people from around the globe this year.By Thursday, more than 1.6 million people had already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage, which runs from Sunday to Friday.Thousands could be seen arriving in Mecca, with groups from different countries wearing distinct colors to set them apart.Some pilgrims pushed their elderly relatives on wheelchairs while others stopped to call family members back home on video chat or buy ice cream as temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).For many, it is their first time away from home.Every Muslim is required to complete the hajj at least once in their lifetime if they have the means to do so.‘Smart hajj’Many were visibly moved to be so close to Islam’s holiest site — the Kaaba, a black masonry cube in the center of Mecca’s Grand Mosque.“I feel as light as a feather,” said Senegalese Fame Diouf, who traveled from Amsterdam. HMEIMIM AIR BASE, Syria (AP) — Russian air defense assets in Syria have downed 45 drones targeting their main base in the country, its military said Thursday, after an attack by the Islamic State group on a Syrian army base a day earlier killed seven troops.The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that five of them were shot down in the last three days near the Hmeimim air base. The base in the province of Latakia serves as the main hub for Russian operations in Syria.Konashenkov said that while the drones appear primitive, they use sophisticated technologies and have a range of up to 100 kilometers (60 miles). He charged that the jihadists wouldn’t have been able to assemble the drones without outside help, but didn’t specify who might have assisted them.The Russian general noted that the number of drone attacks have increased recently, adding that all of them were launched by forces based in the northern province of Idlib.Idlib has become the main base for President Bashar Assad’s foes, which moved there after being forced out from other areas across Syria as part of surrender deals often negotiated with the Russians on behalf of the Syrian government.With Russia’s support, Assad’s forces have regained control over key cities, like Aleppo, Homs and Daraa, the southern city where the uprising against the government began in March 2011. The authorities also have restored control over key highways, allowing safe travel all the way from the Jordanian border in the south to the central province of Hama.In Homs, regional governor Talal Barazi told international reporters during a trip organized by the Russian Defense Ministry that a key bridge on a highway linking the Homs and Hama provinces that was destroyed in 2012 has been restored.Barazi said that later this year his administration plans to start restoring the old part of Homs that was ravaged by fierce fighting in 2014.He said that about 650 rebels who had left the province and moved to Idlib have come back to Homs and agreed to lay down their arms.Barazi said that the historic city of Palmyra, home to one of the Middle East’s most spectacular archaeological sites, could be open for tourist visits by next summer. Many of the city’s archaeological treasures were badly damaged by the Islamic State group in 2015. A White House official said Thursday that US president Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed at their Helsinki summit last month on the need to remove Iranian forces from Syria.According to a Reuters report, the official said that Putin and Trump spoke about the Iranian presence in Syria during their one-on-one at the summit.He added that the Russian president had advised Trump that it would be difficult to accomplish this goal.There was no immediate report on a Kremlin response to the comment.The White House official also said US national security adviser John Bolton will meet with Nikolai Patrushev, head of Russia’s Security Council, in Geneva next week to discuss Syria, focusing on Iran’s presence in the country and chemical weapons.At the July summit in the Finnish capital, Trump made comments that seemed to contradict the views of US intelligence agencies over Russia’s efforts to affect the 2016 US presidential election, then backtracked on the comments after it caused a firestorm back home.According to Reuters, the official, in what may be the first such White House readout of what transpired at the private Putin-Trump meeting, said the leaders agreed “in principle” that Iran should not remain in Syria, but Putin believed any attempt to push Iran out would be a “tough task,” in Reuters’ words.The two leaders also discussed nuclear non-proliferation, but made no headway, according to the report.The official also said Trump used the opportunity to tell Putin that Russia’s attempts to influence US elections must not be repeated in the 2018 midterms.Bolton’s Geneva meeting will follow a visit to Israel, the Trump administration said on Tuesday.His visit will also take him to Ukraine, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.Sanders did not elaborate and the White House did not return a request for comment.There was no immediate confirmation from Jerusalem.The trip to Israel will be the first for Bolton, seen as a pro-Israel hawk, since he was appointed to the role in March. GENOA (Reuters) - Italian rescue workers used jackhammers and cranes on Friday to lift giant slabs of concrete from the Genoa highway bridge collapse, hoping to find survivors buried in the rubble of the disaster that killed at least 38 people.A fire held up part of the operation in the early morning, sending up clouds of white smoke before being extinguished. A spark from metal-cutting equipment was thought to have caused the blaze that started in a warehouse under the ruined bridge.But then the more than 300 firefighters who have been working non-stop since Tuesday resumed their task. As many as 20 people are still unaccounted for, Genoa's chief prosecutor said.Chances of finding survivors appeared to be slim. Vehicles on the highway that links the port city to the French border plummeted 50 meters (165 feet) to the ground when a 200-metre (660-foot) stretch of the viaduct collapsed on Tuesday.Firefighters, who are using sniffer dogs as well as heavy machinery, have not yet reached all the cars."We are trying to find points where we can penetrate these incredibly heavy slabs. Then the earth-moving equipment moves in to create a passageway where the dogs can enter," firefighter Stefano Zanut said at the scene.Rescuers are hoping that the large chunks of debris may have created a "triangle of survival" when they fell, where someone could still be alive, he said.FUNERAL-Some 600 people have had to leave their apartments below the remaining spans of the bridge for fear of further collapse. BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel says officials are looking into the possibility of a four-way meeting on Syria involving Turkey, Russia, Germany and France.The idea of such a meeting has been raised by Turkey. Asked about the possibility Friday, Merkel stressed that there are already two main formats for talks on Syria, both working closely with U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura.But she added that "nevertheless, a meeting between Germany, France, Turkey and Russia could make sense — this must be well-prepared, so there is no date yet." She said leaders' advisers will do preparatory work to decide whether it's worth holding such a meeting.Syria is expected to be on the agenda when Merkel meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany on Saturday.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AFP) — Two million Muslims gather in Saudi Arabia this week for the hajj as the annual pilgrimage becomes increasingly hi-tech with apps to help the faithful navigate Islam’s holiest sites.This year the hajj comes with the ultra-conservative kingdom witnessing an unprecedented pace of change, finally ending a ban on women driving while remaining firm in the face of any dissent.One of the five pillars of Islam, the hajj is expected to draw two million people from around the globe this year.By Thursday, more than 1.6 million people had already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage, which runs from Sunday to Friday.Thousands could be seen arriving in Mecca, with groups from different countries wearing distinct colors to set them apart.Some pilgrims pushed their elderly relatives on wheelchairs while others stopped to call family members back home on video chat or buy ice cream as temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).For many, it is their first time away from home.Every Muslim is required to complete the hajj at least once in their lifetime if they have the means to do so.‘Smart hajj’Many were visibly moved to be so close to Islam’s holiest site — the Kaaba, a black masonry cube in the center of Mecca’s Grand Mosque.“I feel as light as a feather,” said Senegalese Fame Diouf, who traveled from Amsterdam. Laughing, she recounted the story of how she couldn’t stop crying near the Kaaba.“This was my dream from childhood,” said Raja Amjad Hussein, who made the trip to Mecca from Pakistan.“I can’t explain. HMEIMIM AIR BASE, Syria (AP) — Russian air defense assets in Syria have downed 45 drones targeting their main base in the country, its military said Thursday, after an attack by the Islamic State group on a Syrian army base a day earlier killed seven troops.The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that five of them were shot down in the last three days near the Hmeimim air base. The base in the province of Latakia serves as the main hub for Russian operations in Syria.Konashenkov said that while the drones appear primitive, they use sophisticated technologies and have a range of up to 100 kilometers (60 miles). He charged that the jihadists wouldn’t have been able to assemble the drones without outside help, but didn’t specify who might have assisted them.The Russian general noted that the number of drone attacks have increased recently, adding that all of them were launched by forces based in the northern province of Idlib.Idlib has become the main base for President Bashar Assad’s foes, which moved there after being forced out from other areas across Syria as part of surrender deals often negotiated with the Russians on behalf of the Syrian government.With Russia’s support, Assad’s forces have regained control over key cities, like Aleppo, Homs and Daraa, the southern city where the uprising against the government began in March 2011. The authorities also have restored control over key highways, allowing safe travel all the way from the Jordanian border in the south to the central province of Hama.In Homs, regional governor Talal Barazi told international reporters during a trip organized by the Russian Defense Ministry that a key bridge on a highway linking the Homs and Hama provinces that was destroyed in 2012 has been restored.Barazi said that later this year his administration plans to start restoring the old part of Homs that was ravaged by fierce fighting in 2014.He said that about 650 rebels who had left the province and moved to Idlib have come back to Homs and agreed to lay down their arms.Barazi said that the historic city of Palmyra, home to one of the Middle East’s most spectacular archaeological sites, could be open for tourist visits by next summer. Many of the city’s archaeological treasures were badly damaged by the Islamic State group in 2015. Palmyra is a world heritage site protected by the United Nations’ cultural agency UNESCO.In Aleppo, Hazem Ajan, the director of the city’s industrial cluster, told reporters that about 500 companies have resumed operations in the area since the government reclaimed control in 2016.Meanwhile, in eastern Syria, at least seven soldiers were killed with the Islamic State group attacked an army position near the city of Deir el-Zour, a monitoring group said Thursday.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack on Wednesday near the Taim oil field was the group’s closest approach to the Deir el-Zour air base since the government recaptured it from IS last year.Mohammad Hassan, a media coordinator for the activist-run Deir Ezzor 24, said at least 12 soldiers and five IS fighters were killed in the clashes.A recent UN report warned that IS, which once boasted of commanding a caliphate stretching across northern Syria and Iraq, is adopting a guerrilla profile.The group may still have up to 30,000 members distributed between Syria and Iraq, according to the UN report.Also Thursday, Assad and his wife Asma visited one of the tunnels once used by rebels outside Damascus to move vehicles, weapons and fighters while they were under siege, the president’s office said. A White House official said Thursday that US president Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed at their Helsinki summit last month on the need to remove Iranian forces from Syria.According to a Reuters report, the official said that Putin and Trump spoke about the Iranian presence in Syria during their one-on-one at the summit.He added that the Russian president had advised Trump that it would be difficult to accomplish this goal.There was no immediate report on a Kremlin response to the comment.The White House official also said US national security adviser John Bolton will meet with Nikolai Patrushev, head of Russia’s Security Council, in Geneva next week to discuss Syria, focusing on Iran’s presence in the country and chemical weapons.At the July summit in the Finnish capital, Trump made comments that seemed to contradict the views of US intelligence agencies over Russia’s efforts to affect the 2016 US presidential election, then backtracked on the comments after it caused a firestorm back home.According to Reuters, the official, in what may be the first such White House readout of what transpired at the private Putin-Trump meeting, said the leaders agreed “in principle” that Iran should not remain in Syria, but Putin believed any attempt to push Iran out would be a “tough task,” in Reuters’ words.The two leaders also discussed nuclear non-proliferation, but made no headway, according to the report.The official also said Trump used the opportunity to tell Putin that Russia’s attempts to influence US elections must not be repeated in the 2018 midterms.Bolton’s Geneva meeting will follow a visit to Israel, the Trump administration said on Tuesday.His visit will also take him to Ukraine, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.Sanders did not elaborate and the White House did not return a request for comment.There was no immediate confirmation from Jerusalem.The trip to Israel will be the first for Bolton, seen as a pro-Israel hawk, since he was appointed to the role in March. Kochi (India) (AFP) - The death toll from floods that have triggered landslides and sent torrents sweeping through villages in the Indian state of Kerala trebled Friday to 324, authorities said, amid warnings of worse weather to come.Hundreds of troops and local fishermen are staging desperate rescue attempts with helicopters and boats across the southern state, which draws international tourists to its tropical hills and beaches.Kerala has been battered by record monsoon rainfall this year and is "facing the worst floods in 100 years", chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a Twitter statement, adding that 324 lives had been lost so far.With thousands still trapped, power and communication lines down and fresh alerts of further torrential rain, authorities warned of more trouble ahead and further deaths to come."We are deploying more boats and army to ramp up rescue operations," senior state government official P.H. IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi security officials say Iraq's air force carried out two airstrikes targeting Islamic State group inside Syria, killing at least 28 IS militants.They say one of the two airstrikes by F-16s targeted a meeting of would-be suicide bombers who intended to strike in Iraq during next week's Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.About 20 militants were killed in that airstrike, while eight died in the second one. Both targets were inside Syria near the Iraqi border.Iraq announced the strikes on Thursday but details on targets and casualties only emerged on Friday. The statement said the targets were identified by the Eagles Cell, Iraq's top counterterrorism agency.The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
