For second time in 2 months, IDF intercepts Gaza blockade-running boat-Navy arrests 8 passengers, some of them Palestinians injured in recent border clashes with Israel, after vessel left permitted fishing zone, ostensibly en route to Cyprus-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-JUL 11,18

The Israeli Navy stopped and seized a fishing boat that attempted to break through the naval blockade around the Gaza Strip, arresting the eight Palestinians on board, some of them people injured in recent border clashes with Israeli troops, the military said. The vessel’s purported destination was Cyprus, however the boat lacked the equipment necessary to safely reach the island nation, making it more likely that this was a symbolic act of protest.“The vessel was seized without incident,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. After a search of the vessel, the boat was towed to the Israeli Navy’s base at the Ashdod port.IDF medics provided treatment to the injured people on board the vessel, the army said.Hundreds of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip had gathered to see off the boat. Among the passengers were four people said to have been wounded by Israeli soldiers during recent riots along the security fence surrounding the Gaza Strip. The other passengers were said to be students. The passengers “with specific needs are prevented from travelling, receiving care, and finishing their studies,” said organizer Raed Abu Dair. “We are determined to break the blockade.”Mahmud Abu Ataya, 25, who recently suffered a leg wound east of Gaza City, said: “I am leaving to be cared for abroad.”This was the second time in two months that a Gazan fishing vessel was used in an attempt to break the blockade, which Israel maintains is necessary to prevent terrorist organizations from bringing weapons into the coastal enclave. The blockade, which is also enforced by Egypt, has been deemed legal by the United Nations and other international bodies, though it remains hotly contested by many human rights groups.Under the blockade, which was put in place in 2007, Palestinians are forbidden to travel more than 11 kilometers (seven miles) from the Gaza shore.“This is the second time in two months that the Hamas terror group tried to cause a provocation at sea by taking advantage of injured and handicapped people and by paying residents of Gaza to take part in this kind of activity,” the army said.On May 29, another vessel from the Gaza Strip, called Al-Hurriyah (Liberty), attempted to run the blockade.“The IDF seized a Palestinian boat carrying some 17 sailors who broke the sea blockade,” the navy said at the time. “The seizure was carried out without incident.”Then too the boat was towed to Ashdod. The May attempt to break the blockade was timed to mark eight years since the Mavi Marmara, a boat owned by a Turkish group, sought to break the blockade and was boarded by Israeli troops. Nine Turkish citizens were killed in the ensuing melee between IDF soldiers and armed protesters. The boarding of the Al-Hurriyah took place in the midst of an extensive exchange between Palestinian terrorist groups and the Israeli military, in which some 200 rockets and mortar shells were fired from Gaza into Israel, and the IDF struck dozens of targets in the Gaza Strip in retaliation.AFP contributed to this report.

UN envoy urges reopening of Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza-Nickolay Mladenov also calls on Hamas and other groups in the Strip to 'do their part by maintaining calm, stopping incendiary kites and preventing provocations'-By TOI staff    -JUL 11,18

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East urged Israel to reopen the Kerem Shalom crossing with Gaza on Tuesday, saying the Strip needed commerce and trade.Nickolay Mladeno’s appeal comes a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the move in response to the wave of incendiary kites and balloons sent over from Gaza.“I am concerned by the consequences of Israel’s decision to temporarily suspend imports and exports with the exception of basic humanitarian supplies through the Kerem Shalom crossing,” Mladenov said in a statement. “Humanitarian assistance is no substitute for commerce and trade. I urge the authorities to reverse this decision.”Kerem Shalom, the only cargo crossing between Gaza and Israel, has been subject to a strict blockade for the past 11 years that Israel says is meant to prevent terrorist groups from bringing weapons into the Strip. Egypt also tightly controls the nearby Rafah border crossing into the Sinai.Mladenov also called on Hamas, the terror group which controls the coastal enclave, and other Palestinian factions in Gaza to “do their part by maintaining calm, stopping incendiary kites and preventing provocations.”The envoy said that the UN was working “with Israeli and Palestinian counterparts, as well as regional and international partners, to reduce tensions, support intra-Palestinian reconciliation and resolve all humanitarian challenges.”He stressed that the latest development “must not divert us from this urgent course of action.”He called on everyone to “step back” from “confrontation and escalation.”On Monday Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the closure of the crossing a “crime against humanity.”He also accused the international community of being silent on “the crime of the suffocating siege on the Gaza Strip,” and called on it to take “immediate action” to end the blockade of the Strip. The Islamic Jihad terror group said the step was a “new declaration of war” and vowed to respond.“Once again, the government of Zionist terror announces a war on the Palestinian people by intensifying its oppressive siege that has multiplied the suffering of the Palestinian people for more than 11 years,” it said in a statement.“We are coordinating with the factions and forces to evaluate all developments, including the occupation’s most recent measures, which we are dealing with as a new declaration of war on the Palestinian people,” Islamic Jihad added.Earlier Monday, Netanyahu said Israel will be undertaking measures to pressure Hamas, including closing Kerem Shalom, the main commercial passageway between Israel and the coastal enclave.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said he had instructed the military “to take a number of steps” to respond to “Hamas provocations” on the border.“We are not looking for a confrontation or for a military venture, but in the way Hamas operates, the [situation] deteriorates and [Hamas] is liable to pay the full price, a much heavier price than Operation Protective Edge,” Liberman added, referring to the 2014 war with the terror organization.Over the past three months, weekly clashes have taken place on the Gaza border, with Israel accusing Hamas of using the demonstrations as cover to carry out attacks and attempt to breach the security fence. The “March of Return” protests have also seen Palestinians fly airborne incendiary devices toward Israeli territory, sparking hundreds of fires in southern Israel and causing millions of shekels in estimated damages.Immediately after Netanyahu spoke, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that Kerem Shalom would be closed to all commercial goods into and out of the Gaza Strip. The army said humanitarian aid, notably food and medicine, would still be allowed into Gaza, but would require special permission from the military liaison to the Palestinians, Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu Rokon.According to the IDF, the idea of closing Kerem Shalom was proposed by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and was approved by Netanyahu and Liberman. The military said the closure would continue as long as Palestinians persist in launching incendiary kites and balloons into Israel. The crossing has been closed a number of times in the past three months, after sustaining damage from fires set by Palestinian protesters. In addition to closing the crossing, the army said it was prematurely ending the temporary extension to the permitted Gaza fishing zone, which had allowed fisherman to sail up to nine miles from the coast in order to take advantage of the summer fishing season.Adam Rasgon, Raoul Wootliff and Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

All 12 boys plus soccer coach rescued from Thai cave-Divers complete operation to extract group trapped 18 days ago-By AFP-TOI-JUL 11,18

All 12 boys and their football coach have been rescued from a Thai cave after an 18-day ordeal, the Thai Navy SEALs said in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening, on the third day of a complex mission to bring them out.“All 12 ‘Wild Boars’ and coach have been extracted from the cave,” the post said. “All are safe” it added, signing off with a “Hooyah,” a SEALs signature throughout the painstaking mission to get the boys out of the cave.Four SEAL team divers — including a doctor — who stayed with the group were still to emerge, the Facebook post added. In a day of high drama, the remaining five boys emerged in groups as evening approached, guided out by international divers and the SEALs, who have played an integral role throughout an unprecedented rescue mission. The 12 boys, aged from 11 to 16, and their coach, ventured into the cave on June 23 after football practice and got caught deep inside when heavy rains caused flooding that trapped them on a muddy ledge. They spent nine harrowing days trapped in darkness until two British divers found them.Authorities then struggled to devise a safe plan to get them out, mulling ideas such as drilling holes into the mountain or waiting months until monsoon rains ended and they could walk out. With oxygen levels in their chamber falling to dangerous levels and complete flooding of the cave system possible, rescuers pushed ahead with the least-worst option of having divers escort them out through the extremely narrow and water-filled tunnels. The ups and downs of the rescue bid has entranced Thailand and also fixated a global audience, drawing support from celebrities as varied as US President Donald Trump, football star Lionel Messi and tech guru Elon Musk. The emergence of the second batch of four boys on Monday evening was greeted with a simple “Hooyah” by the SEAL team on their Facebook page, an exclamation that lit up Thai social media.Positive medical reports on the rescued group further fueled the sense of joy and optimism. The boys “are in good health, no fever… everyone is in a good mental state,” Jedsada Chokdamrongsuk, permanent secretary of the public health ministry, said at Chiang Rai hospital where the boys were recuperating on Tuesday morning. However, the boys will remain in quarantine until doctors were sure they had not contracted any infections from inside the cave.Experts warned that drinking contaminated water or otherwise being exposed to bird or bat droppings in the cave could lead to dangerous infections. But the early signs on the initial eight were promising, with X-rays and blood tests showing just two had signs of pneumonia and that they were in a “normal state” after taking antibiotics, Jedsada said. Some had even asked for “bread and chocolate spread,” he added. The escape route was a challenge for even experienced divers. The boys had no previous diving experience so the rescuers trained them how to use a mask and breathe underwater via an oxygen tank. One fear had been that they would panic while trying to swim underwater, even with a diver escorting them.Although there have been no major reported complications during the initial rescues, the death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in a flooded area of the cave on Friday underscored the dangers of the journey.“I cannot understand how cool these small kids are, you know? Thinking about how they’ve been kept in a small cave for two weeks, they haven’t seen their mums,” Ivan Karadzic, who runs a diving business in Thailand and has been involved in the rescue mission, told the BBC.

Trump's Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh woos U.S. Senate-[Reuters]-By Richard Cowan and Amanda Becker-YAHOONEWS-July 11, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh visited top U.S. Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, seeking to build support among lawmakers in what promises to be a contentious confirmation battle with Democrats.Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer vowed an all-out battle against Kavanaugh, but senators in his party cannot block Kavanaugh's confirmation if no Republicans break ranks. Trump's fellow Republicans hold a 51-49 Senate majority, leaving them little margin for error. The morning after being nominated by Trump for a lifetime seat on the nine-member conservative-majority court, Kavanaugh began making the rounds in the Senate, first visiting Republican leader Mitch McConnell and then Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, whose panel will hold confirmation hearings.Vice President Mike Pence, who holds a tie-breaking vote in the Senate, accompanied Kavanaugh to the meeting with McConnell."We look forward to the confirmation process, which will unfold in the next few weeks," McConnell said, ignoring a question about whether Democrats would support the nomination.Kavanaugh, a conservative appeals court judge, did not respond to questions.Republicans are hoping for a speedy process to ensure the confirmation vote is held well before the Nov. 6 midterm elections in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs, with Democrats trying to seize control of Congress."I will oppose this nominee with everything that I've got," Schumer told MSNBC, warning that a more conservative court including Kavanaugh could overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion and end protections under the Affordable Care Act healthcare law known as Obamacare.Advocacy groups on both sides are targeting five senators as pivotal in the confirmation fight. Democrats plan to pressure two Senate Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, to oppose the nomination.Republicans will target three Democrats facing re-election in conservative states where Trump won big majorities in the 2016 election - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana - to support Kavanaugh. All three Democrats have touted their ability to work with Trump. They all voted last year to support Trump's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. Kavanaugh is Trump's second nominee, giving the president a chance to solidify conservative control of the court for years to come. The Judicial Crisis Network, which pushes for conservative judicial nominees, will launch a $1.4 million ad campaign aimed at Donnelly, Heitkamp and Manchin, according to a representative for the group.Americans for Prosperity, a conservative policy advocacy group backed by the influential Koch network, has planned a seven-figure ad campaign to support Kavanaugh, as it did last year on behalf of Gorsuch, as well as mounting a grassroots campaign in Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia.A new liberal interest group, Demand Justice, plans to spend as much as $5 million to push Democrats to oppose Kavanaugh, and try to persuade Republicans Collins and Murkowski to do the same.Kavanaugh, 53, was nominated to replace retiring conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81. Kavanaugh has served for 12 years on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, giving him an extensive judicial record that is likely to be revisited at Senate hearings. [L1N1U602Y]White House spokesman Raj Shah, asked whether that could slow the confirmation, said he expected Kavanaugh to be approved within about two months, just like previous Supreme Court nominees. The court's new term begins in October."Democrats are going to look for any reason that they can poke and find to try to delay this nomination," Shah told reporters, calling a 66-day timeline "a pretty good benchmark."(Additional reporting by Susan Heavey, Susan Cornwell and Roberta Rampton; Writing by John Whitesides; Editing by Will Dunham)

Flights canceled as Taiwan battens down for powerful typhoon-[Reuters]-By Jess Macy Yu-YAHOONEWS-July 10, 2018

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan braced for Typhoon Maria on Tuesday, prompting school closures and the cancellations of hundreds of flights amid warnings of landslides and floods on the island.Maria was expected to approach the northern coast early on Wednesday as it moves in a west-northwesterly direction at 30 kph (19 mph), weather officials said.At one point a super typhoon, Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has downgraded Maria to a medium-strength storm with wind gusts of up to 209 km per hour (129 mph).Local governments in most part of northern Taiwan plan to close offices and schools on Wednesday, but financial markets will remain open, authorities announced late on Tuesday.Troops were deployed in some areas amid fears of landslides and fishermen in the northern city of Keelung tried to protect boats from the storm.China Airlines and Eva Airways, Taiwan's two largest carriers, canceled many flights and warned more could be delayed because of the typhoon.Hong Kong's flagship carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways, said more than a dozen flights had been canceled.Taiwan is frequently hit by typhoons during the summer, and stepped up preparations to guard against them after Typhoon Morakot devastated the island in 2009. It killed nearly 700 people, most of them in landslides.(Reporting by Jess Macy Yu in Taipei and Yimou Lee in Yilan; Additional reporting by Trista Shi and Maggie Liu in HONG KONG; Writing by Anne Marie Roantree; Editing by Andrew Roche)

Hamas leader in Gaza breaks arm in traffic accident – report-Palestinian site says Yahya Sinwar's health is good, no suspicion of foul play-By Michael Bachner-TOI-JUL 11,18

Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas terror group’s leader in the Gaza Strip, has broken his arm in a traffic accident, a Palestinian report said Tuesday. There was no suspicion the Monday incident was anything but a “normal” traffic accident, the Quds Press website reported, citing a source close to Sinwar. The source added that the leader’s hand was currently in a splint, and that his health was good.Sinwar, 55, has been Hamas leader since February 2017, when he replaced Ismail Haniyeh, who now leads Hamas’s political bureau.Sinwar, sentenced to life in 1989 for murdering Palestinians who were thought to have collaborated with Israel, spent 22 years in Israeli prisons before being released in a 2011 prisoner exchange deal for IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. In September 2015, Sinwar was added to the US terrorism blacklist alongside two other members of Hamas’s military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Pompeo talks tough on Iran while visiting Emirates-US secretary of state says renewed sanctions aim to convince Tehran that its activities have 'a real high cost'-By Agencies-TOI-JUL 11,18

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on a visit to the United Arab Emirates, said Tuesday that the US wants to show Iran its actions have “a real high cost.”Speaking to Sky News Arabia, he said that a focus remains on denying “Iran the financial capacity to continue this bad behavior.”Pompeo said that included a “series of sanctions aimed not at the Iranian people, but rather aimed at the single mission of convincing the Iranian regime that its malign behavior is unacceptable.”Pompeo met Abu Dhabi’s powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while on his short trip to the UAE.US President Donald Trump announced in early May the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the Iran nuclear deal and the reinstatement of sanctions against the country, as well as against foreign companies who do business with it.On Friday, the remaining partners in the 2015 nuclear deal vowed to keep Iran plugged into the global economy despite the US withdrawal and sanctions threat.Britain, France, and Germany along with Russia and China met with Iran in Vienna to offer economic benefits and assurances that would lessen the blow of sweeping US sanctions announced by Trump. The foreign ministers Friday agreed on an 11-point list of joint goals in the Austrian capital, where the accord was signed with the aim of stopping Iran from building the atomic bomb in return for sanctions relief. In the joint statement, they reconfirmed their commitment to the deal and its “economic dividends” for Iran, which has suffered worsening financial turbulence since Trump abandoned the accord, and vowed to work for “the protection of companies from the extraterritorial effects of US sanctions.”Although there were no concrete pledges or deadlines, they also vowed efforts to keep open financial channels with Iran, promote export credit cover, and maintain open air, sea, and overland transport links.
