Jerusalem -Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was rushed on Saturday to a hospital after feeling dizzy, his office said, adding that it appeared the veteran Israeli leader was suffering from dehydration.Netanyahu, 73, remained at Israel's Sheba Hospital, where he continued to undergo medical tests, his office said.In a joint statement with the hospital, his office said Netanyahu had visited the Sea of Galilee, a popular vacation spot in northern Israel, on Friday. The country is in the midst of a summer heat wave, with temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius.According to the statement, Netanyahu began to feel "mild dizziness" on Saturday and his doctor instructed him to go to Sheba Hospital, near the city of Tel Aviv. The hospital is well over half an hour away from Netanyahu's seaside residence in the coastal town of Caesaria."Preliminary tests came out normal and nothing abnormal was found," the statement said. "The initial assessment is dehydration."It said that doctors had recommended he remain in the hospital for further testing.Netanyahu is Israel's longest serving leader. He has served multiple terms stretching over 15 years in office. His current far-right government, a collection of religious and ultranationalist parties, took office last December.Netanyahu is said to be in generally good health, though he was briefly hospitalized last October after feeling unwell during prayers on Yom Kippur, a day when observant Jews fast.Tens of thousands of Israelis have held weekly demonstrations against Netanyahu's government to protest his plan to overhaul the country's judiciary.Netanyahu's allies say the plan is needed to rein in the power of unelected judges. Marine excavations offer glimpse into ancient history preserved under the sea-While much of Israel’s land has already been dug up and explored, archaeological discoveries underwater are just beginning to surface-By Melanie Lidman-JUL 15,23-Today, 9:00 am

The drone of a massive underwater vacuum cleaner pierces the silence at one of Israel’s most picturesque locations, a calm lagoon at Dor Beach where small, sandy islands poke out of clear Mediterranean waters.Just two meters below the surface, a dozen archaeologists, students, and volunteers in full scuba gear are crawling around the sea bottom like ants, meticulously combing through sand using an underwater dredger. With their giant vacuum, they carefully uncover pieces of pottery and wood from a ship that sank here more than 3,000 years ago.“After 120 years of scientific archaeology on land, maybe 130 years, we’re in a situation where we know a lot about what happened on land, but we know very little about what’s under the sea,” said Prof. Assaf Yasur-Landau, the director of the University of Haifa’s Leon Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies.The University of Haifa’s School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures is Israel’s only underwater archaeology certification program. Since 2012, it’s been offered in English to international students, and around 20 students are graduating this summer.“Every single thing that we excavate provides so much new information,” Yasur-Landau enthused. “Every ship is a time capsule. It’s a capsule of our material culture, what was traded and the different commercial connections, and also what the environment was like back then.”In May, Yasur-Landau oversaw the first excavations of two shipwrecks in the Dor Beach lagoon, one from the Persian period, from around 550 BCE, and one from the Iron Age, around 1000 BCE. During the three-week dive season, they uncovered pieces of pottery from 3,000 years ago and are trying to determine if they’ve discovered the infrastructure for an early port or just the detritus of old shipwrecks, Yasur-Landau said. In the fall, they will dive again for another three-week season to try to explore the ruins further.Israel has always been a hub for marine activity, from the first Mediterranean fishing villages dating from around 10,000 BCE to ancient Roman ports like Caesarea to the ships filled with Jewish refugees trying to evade the British blockade after WWII.But excavating items and ships that sank to the sea floor thousands of years ago is a much more complicated process than excavating an archaeological site on land. It’s also far more expensive, requiring boats, sand dredgers, scuba equipment, and a highly trained team with a very specific skill set.Researchers still must carry out the same archaeological practices of meticulous documentation and excavation, layer by layer, but all while underwater, wearing bulky scuba gear, and fighting currents, waves, and tides — and the occasional curious fish and small jellyfish. Recent technological improvements, including underwater photography that can create 3D modeling and provide a record to study on dry land, have made underwater excavations slightly more accessible.Under the sea, your straw mat will live forever“Our main goal is trying to understand the lives of people throughout history, and the different types of adaptations, the economic, the social, the cultural ways they adapted to different environmental conditions,” said Yasur-Landau. “Why is this relevant? Because we see processes that start in ancient times and continue to today.”Manmade stress to coastal ecosystems, a rising sea level, population crowding, political problems that lead to economic issues – these are all matters that residents of Israel’s coast have been dealing with for thousands of years, and continue to be exceptionally relevant today, Yasur-Landau noted. Maritime trade still accounts for more than 90 percent of Israel’s imports.“Here we have an archaeological record under the water of the 11,000 years from the time people started to live in villages and in permanent settlements until yesterday,” he added.  “So we can create a very long narrative of 11,000 years of how people are living along the sea and how cultures are interacting with the sea.”The University of Haifa program combines maritime and coastal excavation, since coastal villages and ports are so closely intertwined with the sea. Additionally, changing sea levels over time means some areas now submerged in water were once dry land and have remains of coastal villages.But while underwater conditions are challenging, they’re also exceptionally good at preserving things that are nearly impossible to find on land, including organic materials such as wood, ropes, and straw mats.Sand creates an anaerobic environment, which means that something covered in sand has little to no oxygen. Because exposure to oxygen causes organic materials to decompose, when items are in an anaerobic environment, they stay intact for much longer.Yasur-Landau has found pieces of Byzantine-era straw mats, basketry, and twined ropes from around 300-600 CE. These types of items are rarely found on land and provide an important window into the daily lives of people from the past.Another benefit of underwater archaeological sites — which are usually under a meter or more of sand — is that they are rarely disturbed by human intervention, unlike Israel’s thousands of archaeological sites on land, where looting is a serious issue.Praying to Poseidon-Students interested in studying marine archaeology should have basic scuba qualifications, but Yasur-Landau said they’re not looking for highly trained frogmen. Many of the dive sites are fairly shallow, such as the excavation at Dor Beach, which is only 2 to 4 meters deep. It’s more important to have the ability to work carefully and patiently amid the challenging underwater conditions, he said.The program draws mainly from archaeologists who already have a deep love of water. Karsyn Johnson, a University of Haifa master’s student originally from Oklahoma, grew up scuba diving in deep lakes.“I just always loved archaeology, but I’ve always been involved in water. I was a competitive swimmer for 11 years, and I’ve been a lifeguard for seven or eight years,” Johnson said.After graduating from Oklahoma University in 2021, Johnson set her sights on coming to Israel. In 2022, she was working on a dig at Tel Hatzor in northern Israel when, on an off day, she was in Haifa and visited the Hecht Museum. She walked into the museum and saw the Maagan Michael ship, a 2,400-year-old trade boat discovered off the coast of the town of Maagan Michael.“I was so star-struck by this ship,” she said. She met with the University of Haifa the same day about enrolling in the marine master’s program.“This is like making a dream happen, to combine the two things, archaeology and water,” she said.“Last week was my first time ever digging something out of the water. It was so cool,” said Johnson.Marko Runjajic, a first-year PhD student in the maritime archaeology program, is overseeing the dive days and organizing the constant shift change of which students are in the water and which students are taking a break on land.“After high school, I started engineering and failed, and I kind of stumbled into archaeology,” said Runjajic, who is from Croatia and grew up in Germany.The marine excavation can be a little tedious, requiring hours of painstakingly sucking sand from small bits of wood or pottery, but Runjajic said the underwater digging is the most exciting part of the year.“We only have limited time to do field work throughout the year — it’s related to the research, grants, and funding — so these are always special adventures,” Runjajic said. “It’s the best moment when you go into the water because you’ve been waiting for it, you’ve been planning it for a while, and then you pray to Poseidon that everything’s going to work out.”-Expert vacuum cleaners-Dor Beach looks like it has been ripped from the pages of a Caribbean resort rather than along Israel’s Mediterranean coast. Three small islands create a shallow lagoon, with bright blue water reflecting a cerulean sky. It’s a far cry from the murkier parts of Israel’s coast and the grimy Haifa port just 30 kilometers (18 miles) north. The calm, inviting waters make it easy to envision why ancient mariners would have chosen to use the site as a port thousands of years ago.Starting in the 1980s, archaeologists have identified some 26 shipwrecks or remnants of cargo in the lagoon. Previously, it’s been difficult to excavate the lagoon because most of the archaeological remains are under around two meters of sand. In other areas along the Carmel coast, archaeological remains are found under just one meter of sand.In order to remove two meters of sand while underwater, teams of around a dozen divers operate two sand dredgers, which act like massive vacuum cleaners by sucking up the sand from a certain area and spitting it out into a pile in another area. Because the movement of the water naturally tries to immediately fill any excavated area, the dredgers must be continuously at work. Archaeologists also use sandbags to shore up the sides of an excavated area, which needs to be at least 10 square meters (100 square feet) in order to keep enough sand out of the area being examined.Overnight, the carefully excavated area is swallowed by the sand, and in the morning the archaeologists must begin the process all over again. Yasur-Landau said the sandy areas in Dor Beach do not have extensive marine life so there is little negative environmental impact from their digging.During a three-week dig season in May, the team excavated two sites to explore cargo and remnants of Persian and Iron Age shipwrecks. It was the first time either site has been excavated since they were identified in the 1990s by divers from Israel and the United States.The divers are also searching for evidence from before the Iron Age. Yasur-Landau said once they reach the sediment of the seabed, below the sand layer, they’ll be searching for any human activity from the Neolithic (9,5000 – 4,500 BCE) or even Paleolithic period (prior to 9,500 BCE).Here, divers will need to use more traditional archaeological devices such as trowels to carefully dig in the clay sediment below the sand. Yasur-Landau is optimistic they will eventually find something from this period. He’s invited Neolithic experts from various institutions to snorkel above the excavated area and look for any patterns that they recognize as evidence of human activity.Remains of coastal Neolithic villages were found at Atlit Yam, from around 8,000 BCE, when the water level was much lower than today, so the coastal village was closer to the water. Marine archaeology in Australia has revealed evidence of human settlements along the continent’s coast and underwater from some 60,000 years ago.-The last frontier is under the water-Marine archaeology is even more of a cooperative enterprise than land archaeology, because of the sheer number of people needed to operate the equipment – the boats, the dredgers, and ensure all the researchers safely exit the water. But archaeology in general is undergoing a seismic shift to become much more of a team sport, Yasur-Landau noted.“The days of a single archaeologist in the field are over,” he said. “Everyone needs to work together… Archaeology is being done now by teams of different researchers, each one with their own discipline and labs.”Earlier this year, the University of Haifa and the Technion launched a joint initiative to apply exact sciences and cutting-edge lab technology to archaeological digs, and cross-institutional cooperation is now the norm as microarchaeology has forced research to become highly specialized.But for those still searching for the swashbuckling sense of adventure and discovery of uncovering ancient artifacts à la Indiana Jones, Yasur-Landau believes there’s no greater place to dig than underwater. There are hundreds of archaeologists in Israel, including more than 100 working at various academic institutions, and dozens working at the Israel Antiquities Authority. But only seven — five from universities and two at the IAA — are experts in underwater archaeology, he said. The UK’s South Wales Police (SWP) is reportedly getting 140 matches a month using retrospective (or “forensic”) facial recognition technology, according to an interview reported by Police Oracle. The chief constable at the SWP, Jeremy Vaughan, told the Welsh Affairs Committee that the technology is only being used for serious offenses such as rape.He explained that by using facial technology retrospectively, they have caught sex offenders on buses, trains, and outside of school playgrounds.Vaughan explained how these images, typically captured from sources like CCTV, mobile phones, and social media, are compared against 600,000 images held by the SWP and the Gwent police force.The chief also outlined how the force uses the technology, saying there is “a clear escalation/authorization process for who’s on the watch list” and that it doesn’t retain people’s data.The SWP resumed using live facial recognition in April of this year, a technology that has been controversial in the UK due to accusations of racial bias.Though a third-party report found that there was no evidence of significant bias by the technology, this hasn’t stopped harsh and continued criticism from human rights campaigners such as Big Brother Watch.Despite the criticisms of bias, Vaughan defended the technology during the interview, saying, “We’re duty bound to use whatever technology we can — within the law — to protect the public.” “I include facial recognition in that,” he adds.The police leader recommends the introduction of an internal Code of Practice within the police force to stop the tech from being misused, as this would be quick to implement and approve.

Welcome to the peak of inflated expectations for digital-ID onboarding for financial services.All familiar with the remarkably long-lived Hype Cycle, a predictive model created by research firm Gartner, know that the peak is a heady time for a growing tech market. It is when the maximum amount of marketing hot air is produced and consumed.Gartner calls what follows the trough of disillusionment, when buyers (and the media) realize that no matter what anyone says, only so much butter can be spread on a slice of bread. Some particularly hard-bitten IT veterans call it the trough of despair.But that remains in the future for digital ID systems for financial inclusion.Right now, a small number of analysts and other observers are calling out weaknesses in arguments that using digital IDs to universalize financial services. Some observers say too little is being done about equally essential steps that, if taken, might even accelerate digital ID systems’ effectiveness.A Carnegie Endowment for International Peace report published this week waves a warning flag. Governments around the world have bought into industry hyperbole about how much digitally enabled financial inclusion can change consumers’ lives for the better.The shortfall between expectations and actuality is growing, too, as government budgets are strained.Carnegie analysts have produced their share of cheerleading articles about the necessity of getting digital ID-secured financial tools in the hands of people, particularly people in the Global South. (They have come at the topic mostly through a steadfast focus on cybersecurity.)In this week’s report, Carnegie estimated that at least 1.9 billion people in the world do not have bank accounts of any variety, “a useful proxy for measuring formal financial inclusion.”But most everyone capable for making a difference here are turning to technology – which is essential in remedying the problem. From ITU and ICAO to NIST and FIDO, organizations across the world have been working on a multitude of standards in the area of digital identity. A new report from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) is attempting to help digital ID creators find their way through this alphabet soup while formulating recommendations for standard makers.The Digital Identity Standards report, released in July, proposes new recommendations for standardization organizations, government agencies and policymakers. Special attention is paid to the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, a project that will give each European citizen and business unique and verifiable credentials which has recently kicked off pilots across the continent.One of ENISA’s key recommendations for policymakers regarding the EUDI Wallet is finding a clear legal definition of the term “digital identity.” Another is to use the new Digital Markets Act to provide direct access from the mobile application to the security anchor provided by EU CC-certified secure elements available on smartphones.The cybersecurity agency also wants European organizations to standardize the EUDI Wallet interfaces with QTSP, relying parties, devices, existing national eID documents and existing eIDAS node infrastructures. Another issue that requires standardization is the privacy evaluation methodology for EUDI and digital identities in general.ENISA wants European standardization organizations to coordinate and divide responsibilities to avoid doing double work. The bloc should adopt standards such as ISO/IEC 18013-5 and the ISO/IEC DIS 23220 series as European norms, the report states.Standardization organizations should also define a harmonized authentication protocol between the EUDI Wallet and the relying parties and prepare a generic code-of-conduct methodology to be applied to the (Q)TSP and the EUDI Wallet.The final set of recommendations is aimed at ENISA itself as an agency dedicated to achieving a high common level of cybersecurity across Europe. This includes publishing overviews of endorsed digital ID standards and existing digital ID models, and assessing impacts on cybersecurity standards.According to the recommendations, ENISA should also create ad hoc groups to address potential EUDI Wallet vulnerabilities and cooperate with other standardization organizations in  assisting EU institutions, bodies and agencies, EU Member States and private organizations.Aside from providing recommendations for the EUDI Wallet, the report gives an overview of the most important standards and standardization organizations, including European and international organizations, commercial forums and consortiums as well as national organizations. It also analyzes different digital identity standards covering several areas, from policy and governance to technical and operational specifications.Among the areas that are covered are general standards used in trust services and identity management, including identity proofing, biometrics and presentation attack detection. In addition, the paper delves into specific groups of standards, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) electronic travel documents, mobile driving licenses (mDLs) and mobile eIDs, X.509 public key certificates, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), OpenID Connect, FIDO2, and Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). A matrix matches the various standards to their areas of application within eIDAS 2.0.

A slew of the world’s largest automakers, including Sony, Honda, Ford, Genesis, and Mullen Automotive, have all either recently announced or patented facial recognition technologies.A newly unveiled prototype car from Sony and Honda, called “Afeela,” is set to employ facial recognition to unlock the vehicle and open its door.The semiconductors and chipsets set to underpin this biometric tech will be provided by electronics giant Qualcomm.The firms will start taking orders in 2025, with U.S. deliveries set to start in 2026.Commenting on the move, Sony Honda Mobility President Izumi Kawanishi told Axios, that though the automotive industry has been “a very traditional business,” it is “growing up” by adopting products and software from the IT world.Ford is yet another example of a major automaker that appears it could be getting into the action. In June, the auto giant filed a patent application for “enhanced biometric authorization,” which includes but is not limited to facial recognition.Beyond just controlling access to the vehicle, the newly published patent filing covers technology where the user’s biometric data stored on the system can be updated automatically. This may potentially enable greater accuracy in the occurrence of changes like weight gain, aging, or other factors that can significantly impact appearance.A similar patent application, filed and published by the USPTO around the same time, describes a method that would allow the vehicle to “maintain user data that corresponds to current user biometric data, which can reduce the likelihood that an authorized user will fail biometric authorization, or an unauthorized user will pass biometric authorization.”California EV firm Mullen Automotive is yet another example of a company that is announcing facial recognition tools.The firm is set to launch Persona, an AI vehicle technology, which among other use cases will enable users to lock and unlock vehicles with face biometrics.Mullen also touts some of the potential commercial use cases of the tech, suggesting delivery drivers could automatically unlock their vehicle as they approach it after making the delivery.

A fingerprint biometrics matching algorithm submitted by Neurotechnology has topped the leaderboard of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Minutiae Interoperability Exchange (MINEX) III.The “+010E” algorithm developed for Neurotechnology’s MegaMatcher was evaluated by NIST with a 0.000006 pooled two-finger false non-match rate (FNMR) at a false match rate (FMR) of 0.01, and an FNMR of 0.00323 at an FMR of 0.0001 for native one-finger matching. But a new white paper from ATB Ventures emphasizes the vast economic potential in a Canadian marketplace that is ready for the widespread use of digital ID.The white paper, Trust & the Evolution of Digital Identity in Canada, says that eight in ten Canadians now support digital IDs. More specifically, 66 percent believe in the importance of a secure and trusted digital ID to use for online transactions. And four in ten are already using digital wallets on their smartphones.In this enthusiastic climate, says the paper, the Digital ID and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC) estimates the potential economic value of trusted digital identity to be at least one percent of Canada’s GDP, equivalent to C$15 billion (US$11.3 billion).“The time is right for both public and private sectors to adopt digital credentials and decentralize digital identity technology,” the paper says. “This will allow organizations to mitigate risks, safeguard their customers’ privacy, and foster trust in an increasingly interconnected world. Biometrics startup Global ID has been awarded a pair of patents for finger-vein authentication systems and methods for enterprise access control. One describes the storage of reference templates on user-held devices, and the second a centralized system for using finger veins to unlock a desktop.Swiss-based Global ID‘s first patent, US2023094432, describes storing vein biometrics on the chip of an “electronic identity object,” and then matched with a verification terminal, avoiding a centralized database. The match would be carried out over an encrypted symmetric data link, and would add layer of security and assurance to ID credentials, without introducing the risk of creating a large store of sensitive personal information.The second patent, US2023084042, is much the same but with a biometric server performing the match as a way for an organization to implement secure access control on a desktop  computer.CEO Lambert Sonna says the Global ID intends to create 100 jobs by 2030 in an interview with Innosuisse, which supported the development of its vein-scanning technology.Production capacity for the miniaturized VenoScanner, development of which was supported by the Idiap Research Institute, EPFL LASEC and HES-SO Valais university, is up to 1,000 units per month.Sonna is reportedly now working on expanding the range of applications for vein biometrics, including with palm scanning at a distance.When last heard from, in October, Global ID said it had created management software to provision and monitor the company’s products (including its VenoScanner) distributed throughout an enterprise.In June, the company announced that its VenoScanner was in production. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — More than 2,000 people were evacuated as a wildfire rages “out of control” on La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands on Saturday, destroying around a dozen homes, authorities said.The blaze has affected an area of about 4,500 hectares (11,000 acres) and officials warned residents that the situation could worsen because a heat wave has made the terrain tinder-dry.“The fire has spread very fast,” Canary Islands regional president Fernando Clavijo said. “The fire is out of control.”He said that some residents didn't want to abandon their homes, and he appealed for people to be responsible and heed the calls for evacuation.Clavijo said that he was very concerned about the possibility of shifting winds at night, saying they could make the evacuation operation more dangerous. He said that 10 aircraft were battling the fire, and that water-dropping planes were expected to arrive.The wildfire and evacuations come nearly two years after a three-month volcanic eruption caused devastation on La Palma. While nobody was killed, around 3,000 buildings were buried along with many banana plantations, roads and irrigation systems.The fire is on the western side of La Palma on wooded, hilly terrain dotted with homes. It's not an area that was directly impacted by the 2021 volcanic eruption.Puntagorda's mayor, Vicente Rodríguez, told Spanish public broadcaster RTVE that the fire started inside the limits of his municipality. He added that the area has seen below-average rainfall in recent years, just like large parts of the drought-stricken mainland, because of changing weather patterns impacted by climate change.The fire coincides with a heat wave that is hitting southern Europe.Spain saw record high temperatures in 2022 and this spring as it endures a prolonged drought. Authorities and forestry experts are concerned that the conditions are ripe for a difficult wildfire campaign after seeing virulent fires as early as March.

Science-Jul 14, 2023 12:39 PM-Why Is Europe’s Latest Heat Wave Called Cerberus? It’s Complicated-Cerberus, an unofficial name for the current European heat wave, has gone viral—but some meteorologists find it sensationalistic and worry it won't help people take extreme weather seriously.

If you’re at all aware of the heat wave baking southern Europe right now, you’ll have heard people referring to it as “Cerberus”—a moniker that invokes the fearsome three-headed dog of Greek mythology. In Dante’s Inferno and the classics that inspired it, Cerberus is a monster associated with the underworld.Multiple reports about the blistering heat wave, which has pushed temperatures up to around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Spain, Italy, Greece, and other countries, have cited the Italian Meteorological Society as the institution that chose the name Cerberus for this dangerous weather event.But there’s a problem. The society had nothing to do with the heat wave’s dramatic christening. “The name is unofficial, and we absolutely don’t use it,” says Luca Mercalli, the society’s president, adding that he finds it somewhat sensationalistic.The name was actually chosen by Italian weather website iLMeteo specifically for the anticyclone, or high-pressure region, currently subjecting southern Europe to extreme heat—a fact confirmed to WIRED by Antonio Sanò, iLMeteo’s founder.-Sanò shrugs off the accusation that Cerberus could be considered histrionic. “Our names are not official but always become quickly famous, thanks to our popularity,” he says. iLMeteo’s habit of naming anticyclones after mythological figures is the reason the heat wave that struck Europe in 2017 became widely referred to as Lucifer—a name for the planet Venus in Roman folklore that also came to be used for the devil in Christian tradition.The confusion over what to call 2023’s European heat wave descends still deeper, like Dante’s many circles of hell, because in the Spanish city of Seville, the heat wave has been dubbed Xenia. The Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center (Arsht-Rock), in collaboration with the University of Seville and the City of Seville, launched its own heat wave naming system last year. This is the third time the organization has deployed it. The system runs in reverse alphabetical order and uses recognizably Spanish names—but ones that are not overly common, so as to keep them notable.And don’t forget that Berliner Wetterkarte (a meteorological nonprofit) and the Free University of Berlin have been naming high- and low-pressure weather events in Europe since 1954. The anticyclone FEE is bringing sunny weather to Germany at the moment, says Petra Gebauer, chair of Berliner Wetterkarte. She explains that groups of meteorologists around Europe sometimes give their own names to heat waves. “Actually, the southeastern group has the name Cleon for the heat wave in Greece,” she explains, adding that she hadn’t known how the name Cerberus emerged.The plethora of sobriquets may seem peculiar, but this shouldn’t detract from the danger posed by the present heat in southern Europe. On July 11, a man in his forties collapsed and died in Italy while working outdoors, according to local media, and there have been multiple reports of heatstroke in the country. In Spain, temperatures have hit 45 degrees Celsius in some places, and a new helpline for people affected by heat has received 54,000 calls since it went live last month. Just days ago, scientists published a study in which they estimated that nearly 62,000 people died in Europe as a result of extreme summer heat last year..The current heat wave in Italy is “very unusual,” says Mercalli, because of its long duration: The heat event is expected to last roughly two weeks. A study published in May estimated that, until the late 1990s, the average European heat wave would last one week or less, but this has since increased significantly due to global warming.The sweltering conditions in the Mediterranean are coinciding with extreme heat events elsewhere in the world, such as in the southern US, where temperatures could reach 120 degrees Fahreheit in parts of Arizona. Plus, the southern European heat wave is linked to the one currently affecting Morocco and Algeria in North Africa. The countries are feeling the force of the same anticyclone.Heat waves are deadly, but meteorologists are not yet in agreement over whether we should give them names and, if we do, whether we should choose especially emotive or colorful ones, such as those from mythology.Someone who is unperturbed by the choice of Cerberus, however, is Friederike Otto at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment.“I think they should have claimed it,” she jokes, referring to the Italian Meteorological Society’s denial. But she argues a serious point: People still underestimate the threat heat waves pose. As Otto told WIRED last year before the extreme heat that claimed so many lives in Europe, these weather events are often the most deadly of all, even compared to large storms.“Cerberus … it’s the dog of hell, right? I think that’s a pretty appropriate name for a heat wave,” says Otto.Others aren’t so sure. Hannah Cloke at the University of Reading agrees that heat waves are “silent killers,” and that people often fail to take them as seriously as they should. However, freaking the public out about weather events isn’t desirable, she says. On social media, it is easy to find comments from people who are critical of the use of such a scary name.“We’re going to run out of dangerous monsters quite quickly,” says Cloke, arguing that people could become desensitized to this approach. “In the longer term, it’s not ideal.” Simple names, such as those used for storms, may be more useful in helping to raise awareness about a weather event and conveying that protective action is required, she adds.“We believe a heat wave needs branding and identity,” says Kathy Baughman McLeod, director of Arsht-Rock, as she points out that storms and floods are much more visually dramatic than heat events. The World Meteorological Organization does not currently give official names to heat waves, but Baughman McLeod and her colleagues hope that an internationally recognized, and standardized, system will emerge in the coming years. “That’s exactly our ambition,” she says. She declines to comment on the suitability of Cerberus and notes that the name Xenia applies to the heat wave only within the city of Seville.Her organization determines whether a heat wave requires a name by using an algorithm that takes into account daytime and nighttime temperatures, cloud cover, humidity, and other factors. If the algorithm shows there is a major risk to life, for example a potential 30 percent increase in overall mortality, the heat wave gets a name, says Baughman McLeod.The UK is not currently affected by the heat wave in southern Europe, notes Stephen Dixon, a spokesperson for the UK Met Office. And as the name Cerberus did not originate from a national Met service, “it’s not something we’d refer to,” he says of the label. While the Met Office does give monikers to major storms, it currently has no plans to name heat waves. The UK Health Security Agency, in partnership with the Met Office, conveys warnings through its heat-health alert service, with four levels of severity, ranging from green to red. The latter indicates “significant risk to life” and was in place for parts of the country during last year’s extreme heat event.There are many things we can do to mitigate the impact of dangerously hot weather, says Otto. These range from regularly drinking water and checking in on elderly relatives to rethinking urban planning. It’s remarkable how much cooler a street planted with large trees can be on a sunny day, she notes as an example—up to several degrees Celsius: “That makes a huge difference.”Unfortunately, it is certain that we will face more, and probably stronger, heat waves in the near future. “Climate science shows us that that is what’s going to happen,” says Cloke.Baughman McLeod adds that, with the right amount of preparedness, “no one has to die from heat.”As we all do our best to cope with ferocious summer weather whenever it comes our way, Sanò and his colleagues at iLMeteo will be ready with an evocative list of names gleaned from millennia-old myths. At the time of writing, the next anticyclone, expected in the coming days, threatens to force temperatures to as high as 43 degrees Celsius in Rome, which would be a record. In advance, iLMeteo has decided to christen the incoming high-pressure event “Caronte,” or “Charon” after the boatman who ferries souls to the Greek underworld, where only the dead may enter.

Energy consumption in Texas has surpassed records, as many in the state scramble to stay cool.A blistering US heatwave is set to intensify, with warnings issued across the southwest up to Washington state.Heat advisories as of Friday are impacting at least 93 million Americans, from Florida to Texas to California.In Texas, air conditioner use has led the state to surpass its previous record for power consumption as people try to keep cool.The NWS has cautioned that this intense July heatwave could be dangerous.Around 27 million people will feel temperatures over 110F (43C) in the coming days, the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasted.The heat is a result of an upper level ridge of high pressure, which typically brings with it warmer temperatures, the NWS said.The agency added it is "one of the strongest" systems of its kind that the region has ever seen."The subtropical ridge responsible for this likely historic heatwave across the region is not showing signs of letting up anytime soon," the NWS said.About 700 people are estimated to die each year from heat-related causes in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Both Friday and Saturday will be exceptionally hot, with daytime highs forecasted to hit up to 115F (46C). For some areas, the scorching heat is expected to linger until next week.The heatwave is impacting states that are typically hot during the summer, but multiple regions are projected to match or surpass their all-time high heat records.Las Vegas may match its all-time high of 117F (47C) in the next few days, while Death Valley, California - one of the hottest places on earth - could surpass its official all-time high temperature of 130F (54C).Parts of the southwestern US were already grappling with intensely hot temperatures over the last week. LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Rescuers in boats evacuated 14,000 people over the past several days after floodwaters from two rivers swollen by monsoon rains inundated dozens of villages in eastern Pakistan, officials said Friday.Monsoon rains began lashing the South Asian country in late June and since then, at least 91 people have died in weather-related incidents across the country.Mohsin Naqvi, a top official in eastern Punjab province, tweeted Friday that he visited flood-hit areas. The evacuations began earlier this week after neighboring India diverted waters from dams into the Ravi River, which flows from India into Pakistan. An overflowing Sutlej River has also inundated villages in various parts of the province.According to the national weather agency, rains will continue this week to lash the southwestern Baluchistan and southern Sindh provinces, where thousands died in floods last summer.The floods affected 33 million people and killed 1,739 in Pakistan. They also caused $30 billion in damage to the country’s economy.The monsoon season began in July and will continue until September.The Associated Press.

The ongoing marine heat waves in U.S. waters, explained-July 14, 2023

NOAA scientists have tracked a steady climb in ocean temperatures since April 2023, which is causing unprecedented heat stress conditions in the Caribbean Basin, including waters surrounding Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico. More isolated marine heat wave conditions have been detected off the Northeast U.S. coast, along the path of the Gulf Stream. NOAA has also been monitoring a large marine heat wave in the Northeast Pacific (in the Gulf of Alaska) that has been sitting offshore since late 2022.As we gather more data about these events, NOAA scientists are providing answers to big questions about marine heat waves:What are marine heat waves? Marine heat waves are usually defined as any time the ocean temperature is above the 90th percentile for a specific length of time. This means that the temperatures are warmer than 90% of the previous observations for a given time of year. Marine heat waves can last for weeks, months or years. Marine heat wave conditions are monitored by NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) and NOAA Coral Reef Watch.How are marine heat wave observations and measurements made? The National Weather Service’s National Data Buoy Center collects and disseminates real-time quality-controlled marine observations using 1,300 weather observing stations. Global ocean surface temperatures are also monitored daily using blended satellite measurements.Why is this marine heat wave in South Florida significant? In the last week (as of this writing), water temperatures throughout the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean Sea have been approximately 1.8-5.4°F (1-3°C) warmer than normal. Temperatures around Southern Florida are the warmest on record (going back to 1981). The latest conditions can be seen on the NOAA PSL Map Room webpage.Given that we are in the thick of the Atlantic hurricane season and the tropical North Atlantic is already warm, extremely warm ocean temperatures in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are concerning. Developing tropical storms that pass into the region may strengthen as a result of these conditions. The ongoing marine heat wave in South Florida could impact sensitive marine ecosystems in the region, such as shallow water corals.How long has the marine heat wave been going on? How long will this heat wave last? The current Gulf of Mexico marine heat wave has been present for several months, beginning in February/March of 2023. NOAA’s experimental marine heat wave forecasts indicate a 70-100% chance that extreme ocean temperatures will persist in the southern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea through at least October 2023. We have low-to-medium confidence in this prediction given the historical skill of the forecasting system in these regions.What role does climate change play in this marine heat wave off Florida?The ocean absorbs 90% of the excess heat associated with global warming. As a result, we know that marine heat waves all over the planet are becoming warmer over time. The absolute temperature of the current event is warmer because of climate change, but it would have likely still occurred without climate change. Warming trends also impact our marine heat wave prediction systems, typically by increasing the probability of marine heat waves in our forecasts. How are corals and marine ecosystems impacted by marine heat waves? Marine heat waves cause stress to corals and other marine ecosystems. Exposure to extreme temperature for long periods of time causes a breakdown in the relationship between coral and the algae that live inside of them. The coral is left pale or white, i.e., bleached. The lack of food from the algae can lead to the death of the coral. If the heat stress does not subside, the coral will die. Mortality becomes likely if the corals experience ocean temperatures of 1°C greater than the historical maximum monthly average for two months, or 2°C greater than the historical maximum monthly average for one month.How does NOAA anticipate these marine heat waves may impact fisheries and ecosystems? Extreme heat can be destructive and deadly for marine systems. An unprecedented marine heat wave known as “the Blob” dominated the northeastern Pacific from 2013 to 2016, and upended ecosystems across a huge swath of the Pacific Ocean. This led to an ecological cascade, causing fishery collapses and fishery disaster determinations. “The Blob” caused whales’ prey to be concentrated unusually close to shore, and a severe bloom of toxic algae along the coast delayed opening of the valuable Dungeness crab fishery. Humpback whales moved closer to shore to feed in some of the same waters targeted by the crab fishery, resulting in a then-record 53 whale entanglements in 2015 and 55 in 2016.

CNN  — The world is blasting through climate records as scientists sound the alarm: The likelihood is growing that 2023 could be the hottest year on record, and the climate crisis could be altering our weather in ways they don’t yet understand.And they are not holding back – “extraordinary,” “terrifying” and “uncharted territory” are just a few of the ways they have described the recent spike in global temperature.This week, the planet’s average daily temperature soared to highs unseen in modern records kept by two climate agencies in the US and Europe.While the records are based on data that only goes back to the mid-20th century, they are “almost certainly” the warmest the planet has seen over a much longer time period – “probably going back at least 100,000 years,” according to Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center.And they were far from the only climate superlatives scientists have reported this year.Last month, the world experienced its warmest June on record by a “substantial margin,” according to a report by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.Ocean heat has been off the charts, with surface temperatures last month reaching record levels for June. Beijing, which is facing one of its most brutal heat waves on record, saw temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) this week.In India, parts of the north have been struggling with unrelenting heat, while nearly half a million in the country’s northeast have been affected by severe flooding that has triggered devastating landslides which have taken lives.“All of these kinds of extreme events are absolutely consistent with what we expect to see happening more often as we just continue to warm the globe,” Francis said.And as El Niño strengthens, we’re likely to see more extreme weather, she added, not just in the summer but also in the winter, when El Niños have the biggest influence on Northern Hemisphere weather.“I’d say buckle up.”Unheeded warnings-For climate scientists, this is the “I told you so” moment they never wanted.“This needn’t have been happening,” Stott said.For decades, scientists have been warning about what would happen to global temperatures if the world failed to kick its fossil fuel habit and rein in planet-heating pollution. But they went unheeded, he said.To see climate change unfold in front of us “is terrifying,” he added, because “this will just carry on getting worse and worse, and more and more extreme. We saw a cluster of severe thunderstorms roll over southwestern Ontario on Friday afternoon, and much of the region will see another potential for severe weather on Saturday.A few of Saturday’s storms could pack the risk for strong winds and large hail. Heavy rainfall is an ever-present hazard when it’s this humid outside, so remain mindful of localized flooding and standing water on roadways. Saturday-Areas: Portions of southern and northern Ontario-Timing: Through the afternoon and evening hours-Weather: An upper-level trough lingering over Ontario and the Great Lakes will provide the spark needed for thunderstorms to develop to kick off the weekend.Scattered thunderstorms are possible across much of Ontario on Saturday, fuelled by daytime heating and ample humidity parked over the region.ONSaturday-The strongest storms could approach severe limits, especially across southern Ontario, including much of the Greater Toronto Area and extending north into portions of cottage country. Several rounds of intense thunderstorms swept across parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec through the day Thursday, prompting widespread tornado warnings throughout the region.After starting with heavy rain and strong thunderstorms across southwestern Ontario early Thursday, eastern Ontario took the brunt of the severe weather, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) confirming at least one tornado in Barrhaven, south of Ottawa. A survey team deployed to the area will perform an assessment of the damage on Friday."Damage reported included roof damage, broken windows, power and utility outages as well as damage to trees," ECCC said. "At this time the damage reported seems to be western portions of Barrhaven. "According to city officials, the tornado left at least 125 homes damaged.Despite the damage, only one minor injury was reported, Ottawa paramedics said via CBC News.
