Paris (AFP) - Doctors, nurses and hospital workers fighting the Ebola epidemic in west Africa are struggling with a daily burden of exhaustion, shortage of staff and fear for themselves over the deadly virus, specialists say.Containing an outbreak by a lethal pathogen places big demands on workers in any health system, but this is especially the case in one of the world's poorest regions, they say.Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who co-discovered the Ebola virus in 1976, said health workers faced "their own fear of this epidemic, a fear that is grounded in reality. They're the front line.""They often don't have the resources, they see colleagues dying, so I'm not surprised that some hospitals have been abandoned, basically," he said in an interview with AFP in London."Some nurses in some hospitals have gone on strike because there isn't a minimum basic equipment for protecting both the hospital workers and the patients and their relatives.""The health workers are tired," said Jean-Claude Manuguerra, a professor at the Pasteur Institute in Paris who spent two weeks at the Donka Hospital in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, the country that has been at the epicentre of the scare."It's hard to recruit people and get them to come. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday blacklisted two North Korean shipping firms that it said tried to conceal arms shipments from Cuba to North Korea, following a similar move by the United Nations.The ship, Chong Chon Gang, was discovered last July near the Panama Canal hiding a large amount of arms, including two MiG-21 jet fighters under 200,000 bags of sugar, which the United States said showed a clear attempt to circumvent U.N. and U.S. sanctions against North Korea.North Korea is under an array of sanctions for nuclear and ballistic missile tests since 2006 in defiance of global demands to stop."The Chong Chon Gang episode, in which (North Korea) tried to hide an arms shipment under tons of sugar, is a perfect example of North Korea's deceptive activity, and precisely the sort of conduct that we are committed to disrupting," David Cohen, the U.S. Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in a statement.The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Chongchongang Shipping Company, which is owned by the North Korean government, and the Ocean Maritime Management Company, which tried to help conceal the weapons and provide false documents to authorities in Panama, Treasury said. Rome-The growing tensions between Arab faithful and the high clergy of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem has now turned into a full-fledged war. The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip and the tragedy of the growing Palestinian civilian death toll is catalyzing the showdown between Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land: Greek Orthodox Arabs blame the Patriarch and other Orthodox prelates of Greek origin of colluding with the instigators of Israel’s “genocidal war” as it is referred to it in their communiqués. The conflict going on within the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem – which is purely internal - could potentially have consequences for ecumenism: between 15 and 23 September, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem will be hosting the Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches’ plenary session. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the issue of supremacy.The Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, chose the Jordanian capital Amman as the venue for the meeting. Amman is inside the Patriarchate’s canonical territory and seemed like a stable place to hold the meeting given the climate of uncertainty that has rocked the region as a whole. A group of over 700 representatives from Arab Orthodox communities, led by a few bishops and Arab Orthodox archimandrites, met at the Orthodox Club to address and announce the goals and strategies of what they presented as a reform battle aimed at saving the Patriarchate from decline.The ecclesial revolt’s programmatic “manifesto” published after the meeting was based on controversial arguments, which Arab faithful have resorted to in the past to criticize the dominance of Greek patriarchs and bishops – all of them picked from the monastic Congregation of St. Michael - over the Orthodox Church in the Holy Land.The Arab bishop Atallah Hanna, together with the archimandrites, priests and Arab faithful once again spoke out against the “racist domination over the Church of Jerusalem” and the decline caused by a lack of pastoral care for its faithful. This has led to a drastic drop in the number of Orthodox Christians is recent years as they are choosing to switch to other Christian Churches. The statement’s authors are protesting against the squandering of money donated to the Church by previous generations. They criticize the dereliction of patriarchal schools and ecclesial courts and the corrupt administration of the Patriarch’s assets, which totally lacks transparency. The statement also recalls the restrictions placed on advocators of an apparently urgent reform.But given the events currently being witnessed in the Holy Land, the points which stand out the most are those relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Today our people are being exterminated by the army of Israeli occupation while a priest comes to us with a plan to compel Christians to mandatory service in the army of Zionist occupation, under the cover and with the blessing of the Greek patriarch who has not once looked at the suffering of his people and his flock.” There is an implicit reference here to Gabriel Naddaf, a Greek Orthodox priest serving in the Nazareth region. The priest has become the main ecclesiastical supporter of the campaign, which is backed by Israeli political circles in order to make military service in the Israeli army obligatory for Arab Christians. Patriarch Theophilos also comes under fire for “award[ing] medals to an officer in the army of occupation while our people-- women, children and elderly-- are being targeted by the occupation's artillery.”In their statement, the Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land stress their Arab identity, mentioning their partnership with their “Muslim brothers” “in the unity and defence of our nation.” “The Arab Orthodox clergy … call for an Orthodox ecclesiastical revival that preserves the teachings of the fathers, the canons of the Church and her spirituality in its pastoral and patriotic dimensions.” They set out eight concrete demands for their “reform” programme. Amongst other things, they demand an end to the sale of Church property, the modification of the Synod’s membership to include Arab members and the formation of an elective body composed of priests and lay people who would contribute to the ordinary administration of the Church. The Orthodox “rebels” are seeking political support for their ecclesial offensive, declaring their loyalty to Jordan’s King Abdullah II, asking the Palestinian president Mahmood Abbas for help and paying tribute to the Hashemite monarchy as custodian of the Muslim and Christian Holy Places in Jerusalem.

Turin-The Vatican Secretariat of State has sent embassies accredited to the Holy See a “nota verbale” recalling the Pope’s recent appeals on the situation Christians are facing in Iraq and on the Middle Eastern conflicts on general. The Holy Father made these appeals at the end of his most recent Angelus prayers. Vatican Radio reported on the comments the Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti made on the “nota verbale”: “The Secretariat of State is keeping up to speed with the situation of the Christian communities in the Middle East and is deeply concerned about them,” Mamberti said in his statement.“Christian communities are suffering unjustly, they are scared and many Christians have been forced to emigrate. In Mosul alone about 30 churches and monasteries have been occupied and damaged by extremists, with crosses being removed. For the first time in many years, they have not been able to celebrate Sunday mass,” Mgr. Mamberti said. “You must remember that Christians have been present in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries since the beginning of Christianity and they have played a vital role in the development of society. Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas

Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

In a rare audio message, the head of Hamas’s “military wing” declared on Tuesday that the only way to reach a ceasefire in Gaza is for Israel to end its “siege” on the coastal territory.The message by Mohammed Deif, head of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was broadcast on Hamas’s television network, and is the first official statement by Deif since Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012.In the message, the arch-terrorist repeated Hamas’s conditions for a ceasefire, saying, "The firing will stop only if the [Israeli] aggression ends only if and the blockade is lifted. The Zionist entity will not enjoy security if our people cannot live in freedom and dignity."Deif referred to Israel’s operation in Gaza as a "barbaric attack" which includes killing children."The enemy is destroying our homes. The steadfastness of the Palestinian people is what brought victory in battle,” he stated.Deif is considered the official who determines the agenda of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and is regarded as the “brain” behind Hamas.He is likely hiding underground somewhere inside Gaza, fearing the IDF will try to eliminate him.Reports last week said that an Israeli airstrike in Gaza had targeted Deif’s home.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel unleashed its heaviest air and artillery assault of the Gaza war on Tuesday, destroying key symbols of Hamas control, shutting down the territory's only power plant and leaving at least 128 Palestinians dead on the bloodiest day of the 22-day conflict.Despite devastating blows that left the packed territory's 1.7 million people cut off from power and water and sent the overall death toll soaring past 1,200, Hamas' shadowy military leader remained defiant as he insisted that the Islamic militants would not cease fire until its demands are met.The comments by Mohammed Deif in an audiotape broadcast on a Hamas satellite TV channel cast new doubt on international cease-fire efforts. Aides to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Egypt was trying to bring Israeli and Palestinian delegations together in Cairo for new talks in which Hamas would be presented this time as part of the Palestinian team.Israel's final objective in Gaza remained unclear a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israelis to be prepared for a "prolonged" war.Netanyahu is under pressure from hawkish members of his coalition to topple Hamas in an all-out offensive, but has not let on whether he plans to go beyond destroying Hamas rocket launchers, weapons depots and military tunnels used to infiltrate Israel and smuggle weapons.Dozens of Israeli airstrikes and heavy tank shelling hit areas across Gaza, which was plunged into complete darkness Tuesday night after a strike on its sole power plant set a fuel tank ablaze.In the sprawling Jebaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, at least 24 people — 10 of them from the same family — were killed and dozens wounded in a barrage of tank fire, Hamas health officials said."Tanks were firing in all directions and shrapnel was flying," said Moussa al-Mabhouh, a volunteer for Gaza's Civil Defense. "Smoke was rising from houses and from nearby workshops."In one incident, shrapnel from a strike in Jebaliya hit near a car with U.N. markings, killing an employee of a U.N. aid agency and his brother, and wounding the man's 12-year-old son, said agency spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna.The Israeli military has said it is targeting Hamas command centers, along with rocket launchers and weapons arsenals, but has not provided explanations when asked about specific strikes in which many members of a single family were killed.On Tuesday, multiple members of at least five families were pulled from the rubble after airstrikes and tank shells struck their homes, including the mayor of the Bureij refugee camp, his 70-year-old father and three relatives, according to Palestinian health officials.In all, at least 1,229 Palestinians have been killed, including 128 on Tuesday, making it the single deadliest day since the start of fighting on July 8, said Palestinian health official Ashraf al-Kidra. More than 7,000 have been wounded, he said.Israel says it has lost 53 soldiers, along with two Israeli civilians and a Thai national.Despite the heavy Palestinian losses, Deif, the commander of the Hamas military wing, said fighting would continue. "There is not going to be a cease-fire as long as the demands of our people are not fulfilled," he said.Hamas has demanded that Israel and Egypt lift a border blockade they imposed on Gaza after Hamas seized the territory in 2007. Over the past year, Egypt has further tightened restrictions, shutting down hundreds of smuggling tunnels under the Egypt-Gaza border that had provide crucial tax income to Hamas. The closure of the tunnels drove Hamas into a severe financial crisis.Deif's voice was recognizable in the audio statement on Al-Aqsa TV. He has survived repeated Israeli assassination attempts and has operated from hiding for years.Al-Aqsa also broadcast a videotape it said showed an infiltration by Hamas fighters into Israel on Monday through a border tunnel. The footage showed armed Palestinians climbing out of a hole in the ground and attacking an Israeli guard post near the border. They were then seen fleeing back down the hole.The Israeli military said Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory near a communal farm and killed five soldiers on guard nearby. A Hamas gunman was also killed in the attack. Israeli media reported a soldier shot and killed him while he was dragging one of the bodies back to the tunnel.The military said Palestinian militants fired at least 64 rockets Tuesday at Israeli cities.Israel has said its troops will not leave Gaza until they have demolished the sophisticated network of Hamas attack tunnels under the Gaza-Israel border and inflicted major damage on the group's arsenal and rocket launchers.Meanwhile, the miserable living condition of Gaza's 1.7 million people deteriorated even further after two Israeli tank shells struck one of three fuel tanks of Gaza's only power plant. The hit set off a massive fire, and a column of thick putrid smoke rose from the site for hours."We need at least one year to repair the power plant, the turbines, the fuel tanks and the control room," said Fathi Sheik Khalil of the Gaza Energy Authority. "Everything was burned."The shutdown meant that Gaza has an 80 percent deficit of electricity, said Sari Bashi of the Israeli rights group Gisha. Widespread power outages also disrupt water supplies because electricity is needed to operate water pumps. In Gaza, about 1.2 million have no access to running water, she said.Maher Salem of the utilities department in the Gaza City municipality said about 600,000 of the city's 800,000 residents were facing water problems."But the most catastrophic issue for us, which is the ticking bomb, is that once we have run out of fuel (for back-up generators), we have to shut down the waste water treatment," he said, adding that fuel would last up to four more days.In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the Obama administration urges "all parties to respect the civilian nature of these facilities." The Israeli military has not commented on the shelling of the power plant.Earlier Tuesday, Israeli warplanes carried out dozens of attacks, leveling the home of the top Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, and damaging the offices of the movement's Al-Aqsa satellite TV station, a central mosque in Gaza City and government offices. Haniyeh's house, in a narrow alley of the Shati refugee camp, was reduced to rubble but no one was hurt. Residents placed a large framed portrait of Haniyeh atop the wreckage and draped it with green Hamas flags and Palestinian national banners.Israel has targeted several homes of Hamas leaders but so far none has been killed. Haniyeh said in a statement Tuesday that "destroying stones will not break our determination." Over the past several weeks, the four national political parties have clearly articulated their positions on the Israeli Palestinian conflict.The Tories, of course, have been resolute in their unconditional support for Israel. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has put out regular statements chiding the "international terrorist group Hamas" for its actions.The Liberal Party has taken a very similar stance."Israel has the right to defend itself and its people," leader Justin Trudeau said in a statement. "Hamas is a terrorist organization and must cease its rocket attacks immediately."The New Democrats — to some peoples' surprise — has also thrown their support behind Israel."The firing of rockets by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants at civilian populations is utterly unacceptable. Hamas is a recognized terrorist organization and Israel has the right to defend its citizens from these attacks, while doing its utmost to protect civilians."And finally, the Green Party is the the lone dissenter: At their national policy convention earlier this month, the party passed a motion which "escalates political measures against Israel by condemning its continued settlement expansions.""BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Green Party of Canada fully condemn all illegal Israeli settlement expansions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as undeniable obstacles to the Israel-Palestine peace-process."While the Tory and Liberal caucuses have exuded party discipline on this issue, the others seem to have some dissension in their ranks.As first pointed out by the Vancouver Sun's Peter O'Neil, NDP deputy leader Libby Davies has been active on social media wavering from the NDP policy endorsed by leader Thomas Mulcair."Davies, the Vancouver East MP, has expressed some views on Facebook and Twitter that don’t appear to mirror the approach taken by Mulcair," O'Neil wrote."She has made several posts that focus primarily on the carnage in Gaza."She was 'dismayed that Canada would criticize the UN for speaking out in regards to tragic loss of life of innocent people in Gaza. We must uphold the rule of law and call for end to violence, whether it be rockets, mass bombings and occupation.'"On Twitter, Davies is also urging Canadians to "consider signing" a petition critical of Israel on her colleague Alexendre Boulerice's Facebook page."After years of suffering from occupation and blockade, the civilian population of Gaza has now to endure the constant pounding of missiles. Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, over 170 Palestinians 878 Palestinians (The fatalities include: 207 minors (one minor participated in the hostilities), 88 women, 47 senior citizens)," notes the petition."The deafening sound of missiles and rockets must stop. The civilian population deserve quiet and security. There is only one solution to achieve this for both Palestinians and Israelis: putting an end to the occupation of the West Bank and the siege of Gaza and to negotiate in good faith."According to O'Neil, Davies won't speak to the media about her personal views.There's also been a very odd exchange of positions from the Greens.Despite the fact that members passed a resolution condemning the actions of Israel, party president Paul Estrin published a blog post on the Green Party website tacitly supporting Israel."The Gazan government has had ample opportunity over these past years, nearly a decade, to alter its ways, change its mantra of death to the Jews, and become respectable caretakers of the people in their charge," he wrote."Israel is doing all it can with an untenable situation. The world media vilifies it, to the point that when those firing missiles into its borders and sending militias into its land need to see that they cannot do this, it is Israel, and not Gaza, that feels the world’s hate."Estrin does include a disclaimer noting that the blog post are his personal opinions — even though the post is on the party's official website.Regardless, Green Party leader Elizabeth May was forced to spend her time on Twitter Monday night distancing herself from her president's comments.The Israeli war against Hamas is proving to be a divisive issue throughout the international community.It looks like it's also a difficult issue within the NDP caucus and Team-Green.(Photo courtesy of The Canadian Press)
