A first-of-its-kind debate over the right of non-Muslims to enter, and pray at, the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem was held at the Knesset on Tuesday, with over 30 MKs from both right wing and left wing parties requesting to voice their opinion on the divisive topic.Almost all of the parliament’s Arab members chose not to attend the discussion in protest over the decision to hold it.The debate, headlined “the loss of Israeli sovereignty on the Temple Mount” and rescheduled from last week, was initiated by right-wing lawmaker MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud), whose visits to the Temple Mount have drawn media and police attention. Feiglin was arrested for praying there in October 2012 and January 2013, before he became an MK, and visited the Mount earlier this week ahead of the debate.“The Israeli leadership is shirking its calling,” Feiglin said at the opening of the session, during which he called for Jewish freedom of worship at the site where the first and second Jewish temples once stood.“Behind the back of our people we gave up on any vestige of Israeli sovereignty at the Mount. Every terrorist organization can wave their flag there, but the flag of Israel? It must not be mentioned. Reciting a psalm is grounds for arrest. Even wearing a skullcap [at the site] is inadvisable by police standards.”The Temple Mount is jointly administered by the Jordanian government and the Jerusalem-based Islamic Waqf, an arrangement that has been in place since Israel captured the Old City and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed them. Regarded as a holy site by both Judaism and Islam, proposed changes to the status quo at the Mount are often a source of unrest.Police restrictions bar Jews from praying or engaging in other religious activities while on visits to the Mount for fear that they will provoke a violent reaction from Muslims.MK Zahava Gal-on of the left-wing Meretz party stated that though she believes Jews have a right to pray at the Temple Mount, such a right must be expressed only after consulting with Palestinian and Arab representatives. Feiglin’s proposal, Gal-on said, was “a match that could ignite the powder keg on which the Middle East rests,” and implementing it “would harm the peace process.”“Anyone who today calls [on Israelis] to ascend to the Temple Mount is creating a provocation whose sole purpose is to blow up the relationship between Israel and the Arab world,” she said.Responding to Gal-on, Likud MK Miri Regev said freedom of worship was not up for debate.“Why can a Muslim cry out loud in his own language that ‘there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet and messenger,’ yet a Jew cannot enter the Temple Mount and recite out loud ‘Hear O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One?’” Regev asked, concluding that “he who gives up on the [Temple] Mount will be left without a home.”Earlier Tuesday, Israeli police were showered with stones and firecrackers on the Temple Mount, as Palestinian youth protested the debate over the contested holy site.

The clashes began when officers opened the Mughrabi Gate, an entrance to the Temple Mount next to the Western Wall that only provides access for non-Muslims.Police dispersed The perpetrators, some of whom were masked, with stun grenades. Two police were lightly injured and three suspects were arrested.Palestinian media reported dozens of protesters were injured by rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades.The Ma’an news agency said two Palestinians were seriously injured, one from a rubber bullet shot to the nose.Hamas and Palestinian Authority officials, together with leaders of the Islamic Movement in the Galilee, have long accused Israel of planning to take control of the Muslim sites on the Mount.Last week, the planned Knesset debate drew condemnation from Jordan’s parliament, whose Palestine Committee said a move to expand Israeli control over the sensitive site would be a violation of “Jordanian national sovereignty and is tantamount to a breach of the peace treaty signed between Jordan and Israel.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

A meeting on Tuesday between US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro and right-wing MKs turned into a tense stand-off over the continued incarceration of convicted Israeli-American spy Jonathan Pollard and US efforts to broker a peace deal with the Palestinians.Shapiro met with 16 members of the Land of Israel Caucus, a caucus of some 40 MKs who either openly oppose or are deeply skeptical about land concessions in the framework of Israeli-Palestinian talks.The discussion, which was closed to the press, took place in “an atmosphere of respect and listening,” a source who was present at the meeting told The Times of Israel. But Shapiro also heard a great deal of criticism about American policy.Shapiro started the meeting with a discussion of the American position on the US-brokered peace talks with the Palestinians, the policy issue in which the Obama administration and right-wing MKs diverge most markedly.“Nobody criticized what the Americans believe [on the Palestinian issue], but some said that these opinions don’t really fit reality, and they brought examples such as the [2006 Palestinian] elections they forced on us that brought Hamas [to power in Gaza] and more terrorism,” the source said.The MKs nevertheless asked, “Is it right to force Israel to do things that are dangerous, and to condition [America’s] friendship with Israel on our doing those things?”While the American ambassador did not suggest that American-Israeli ties were dependent on Israel’s actions in the peace talks, “people connected [Shapiro’s] gentle language with other American statements, such as what [US Secretary of State] John Kerry said in Germany” – a reference to a warning from Kerry that failure to achieve peace could shore up those who call for a boycott of Israel.Shapiro insisted during the meeting that a final peace treaty resulting from the talks would “protect Israel’s security and would be good for Israel,” according to sources familiar with the conversation.But MKs were skeptical.

“How can we trust you?” demanded MK David Rotem, of Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party. “When have you stood by us in the past?” he asked.Similar complaints were heard from MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud) and Deputy Transportation Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud), who said the MKs with whom the American administration disagreed were nevertheless elected by the Israeli public, and that imposing American views on them undermined Israeli democracy.MK Nissan Slomiansky, whose Jewish Home party categorically rejects land concessions that lie at the heart of the US-backed talks, told the ambassador the American policy was tantamount to “rape,” insisting that Israel was being forced into the talks against its will. “That’s not friendship,” he said.“I think [Shapiro] was surprised at the diversity of MKs, that there were members there from Yesh Atid and Shas as well, and not just Likud or Jewish Home,” said a source.But the most tense moments came when the conversation turned to the fate of Israeli-American spy Jonathan Pollard, who was arrested in 1985 on charges of spying for Israel and remains in an American prison serving a life sentence.Shapiro defended Pollard’s continued incarceration, reiterating his statements in recent weeks on the issue, including noting that Pollard had been convicted in court.“Don’t sell us unintelligent arguments,” retorted MK Orit Strock (Jewish Home), who co-chairs the caucus together with MK Yariv Levin (Likud). Strock reportedly said the MKs were aware that the administration had the power to release Pollard at will.MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud) said the American government was singling out Pollard in a way that suggested an anti-Semitic motive.The meeting with right-wing MKs followed a meeting last week with the left-leaning Knesset Caucus to Resolve the Arab-Israeli Conflict. That meeting, held on February 18 in the Knesset, was attended by 15 MKs from the 40-member caucus.“At the ambassador’s request, and unlike the Land of Israel Caucus, we didn’t leak from the meeting either criticism or praise,” noted caucus chair MK Hilik Bar (Labor).Bar criticized the leaks from Tuesday’s meeting. “The far right continues to cross these lines and to harm the delicate ties we have with the Americans. It continues to attack the ambassador of our closest friend without any restraint or sense of proportion. It’s continuing to shoot Israel in the foot,” he insisted.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted Tuesday at Israeli involvement in a reported air raid on a Hezbollah convoy on the Lebanon Syria border a night earlier.Speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Netanyahu said he would not speak to the reports that Israeli planes struck a missile shipment or missile base in the Baalbek region on the border between the Syria and Lebanon.However, he added that Israel would defend itself through whatever means necessary.“Our policy is clear,” he said in response to a reporter’s question about the strike. “I won’t speak about what is being claimed or not being claimed. However, we will do everything we need to in order to defend the security of our citizens.”Reports out of Lebanon Monday night indicated Israeli planes had struck Hezbollah sites near Nabi Sheet and Janta, both strongholds of the Shiite terror group.Lebanon’s Daily Star reported overnight Monday that the strikes targeted a weapons shipment meant for Hezbollah. Citing unconfirmed reports, Al Arabiya said the strikes hit a moving convoy carrying ballistic missiles from Syria to Lebanon, to be put to use by Hezbollah.However, Abu al-Majd, a Syrian rebel in the nearby town of Yabroud, told The New York Times that the air raid hit Hezbollah trucks loaded with weapons heading from Lebanon into Syria.Israel has refused to comment on the report, but US officials have confirmed Israeli involvement in raids on missile shipments from Syria to Lebanon in the past.The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group said Israeli warplanes bombed a rocket launcher for Hezbollah fighters near the villages of Janta and Yahfoufa along the border. It was not known if the strikes hit inside Lebanese or Syrian territory, the Observatory added.The border in the area is poorly marked, The New York Times reported.“Two Israeli raids hit a Hezbollah target on the border of Lebanon and Syria,” a Lebanese security source told AFP earlier Monday.The Israeli military declined comment.Hezbollah seemed eager to downplay the reports that there had been a strike in Lebanon, which would require the group, already stretched thin by fighting in Syria, to respond to Israel.The Hezbollah television station Al-Manar said there had been “no raid on Lebanese territory,” reporting only the “strong presence of enemy planes over the area north of Bekaa” in eastern Lebanon.Satellite image of suspected Hezbollah training site near Janta. Janta lies along a known smuggling route for arms between Syria and Lebanon, the Daily Star reported. According to a 2012 report, Hezbollah built a training facility at Janta “which includes a suspected driver training course, a 100-meter firing range and a possible urban terrain assault course.”There was no independent confirmation of the reports.An officer in the IDF’s Northern Command told Reuters that “we have known for some time that there are efforts to move serious weaponry from Syria to Lebanon,” but would not comment on Monday night’s reports.AP and AFP contributed to this report.

Monday’s alleged IAF strike against Hezbollah-bound weapons is yet another stage in the deadly game playing out in the border regions to Israel’s north

In January, during his annual address at the Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies, the commander of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, spoke about the current “war between wars.” The IAF, “a sledgehammer,” he said, was being asked to do the “work of a scalpel.”That appears to be what happened on Monday night. According to Lebanese sources, four “warplanes for the Israeli enemy,” flying southwest off the sea, entered Lebanese airspace at 9:50 p.m., streaking toward the Beqaa Valley. Thirty-five minutes later, the planes exited Lebanon via Nakoura and were back out over the sea.The strikes took place in the northern Beqaa Valley region, “where recruitment and training of [Hezbollah] fighters are carried out,” and along “a well-known route for arms smuggling between Lebanon and Syria,” according to the Lebanese newspaper the Daily Star.Al Arabiya suggested that the target was a convoy of long-range surface-to-surface missiles. This was not confirmed. But what is clear, according to Maj. Gen. (res) Eyal Ben-Reuven, the deputy commander of the northern front during the Second Lebanon War, is that the front, ever since Hezbollah and Iran came to the aid of the then-waning Bashar Assad, has changed shape entirely. “Today Lebanon and Syria are one front, under the umbrella of Iran,” Ben-Reuven said in a conference call.

The tens of thousands of rockets and missiles Hezbollah possesses have always come largely from the stores of the Syrian army. Today, though, the balance of power has shifted. Bashar Assad won Qusayr and held the capital thanks to Hezbollah soldiers on the ground and Iranian Quds Force officers at the helm. Qassem Suleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, is now “running the war himself,” according to a 2013 New Yorker profile. Iran, which gave the regime a $7 billion loan in 2013, has been sending troops and arms daily to Damascus.The price for these self-serving heroics, Ben-Reuven said, is the delivery of “game-changing weapons” to Hezbollah.The transfer of those arms – the cornerstone of Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria – is a murky, deadly affair. Hezbollah troops guard an array of arms depots in Syria. They might simply be safeguarding the weapons from rebel troops or they might be watching over the arms until the order is given to move the matériel into Lebanon. Quite possibly both. Further complicating matters, many of these weapons are put into motion and then, according to a January report in The Wall Street Journal, transferred “piece by piece” to Lebanon.On Monday night, after weeks of clear skies in the region, Hezbollah may have tried to operate under the cover of stormy weather, veteran military affairs analyst Ron Ben-Yishai wrote Monday. If so, the organization’s calculations were off. Brig. Gen. (res) Asaf Agmon, the head of the Fisher Institute, said that while meteorological conditions are a factor “that always influences things,” the IAF has the sort of thermal or radar-guided capacities “to operate in this sort of weather.”Eshel did not elaborate on the difficulty of tracking weapons through the mountainous and fog-enclosed border regions. He did say, though, that the “bubbling spring” of continuous, low-grade conflict was “a daily problem,” which the IAF, on account of its flexibility and near-immediate readiness, was uniquely equipped to deal with.Acknowledging, though, that certain actions could, as in 2006, spark a full-scale conflict, he said that the test of each decision made is that “the efficacy will be immediate and will not make things worse or lead to war.”Thus far, the alleged Israeli considerations have proved correct but the Middle East, as Ben-Reuven noted, has a logic of its own.

The Roman Catholic Church is enjoying some of its best press in decades, and hundreds of thousands of alienated Catholics are returning, thanks in large part to the new, and in some cases revolutionary, leadership of Pope Francis.But, says a new documentary by PBS’ "Frontline," “Secrets of the Vatican,” the morally wrenching controversies that threatened to destroy the church's credibility, starting about the time Pope John Paul II died in 2005, have not fully subsided. Further, the success of Francis’ papacy will depend on how quickly and thoroughly he addresses them."Secrets of the Vatican," airing tonight at 9 p.m. ET on most PBS stations (check local listings), takes an unsparing look at the state of the church Pope Francis inherited from his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, successor to Pope John Paul II and the first head of the church to resign in 600 years.“2012 was an annus horribilis for [Benedict],” Antony Thomas, the producer, writer and director of the film for "Frontline," told Yahoo News in an interview. “Everything was exploding. He wanted to clean up the Vatican bank. He was in a very difficult predicament all the way through.”A horrible year on many fronts, not just with mounting evidence of financial impropriety at the Vatican bank, but also with incidents of sexual abuse by clergy spreading to more than 20 countries and, further, exposure of church hypocrisy about homosexuality. Two of Benedict’s most significant moves were to publicly re-frame the Catholic catechism — in effect, its rules of practice — to emphasize its reference to homosexuality as an “objective disorder,” laying groundwork to, among other things, remove gay clergy.At the same time, reports emerged from Rome of a “gay mafia” inside the church that included some of its top officials, who were unafraid to wield political power and at the same time live an openly promiscuous gay lifestyle.“There was a lot that came to light, including a man who was, as it were, providing choirboys as rent boys,” Thomas said. “What we have tried hard to do in the film is not be simplistic about this. There are a lot of people in the Vatican who are gay who are leading celibate lives, and this is difficult for them. And there are others who are promiscuous.”In the film, a gay priest working in the Vatican describes the effects of the church’s teachings this way: “It’s like a knife in your heart, because I believe in vocation. I believe in the calling of God. I believe in Jesus. I believe He wants us to serve his people, and when a document [says], ‘Oh, you are not able,’ that is ... that is terrible. It’s painful. I hope that, one day, priests can be freely in a relationship and be good priests. That celibacy in the Church will be optional.”"Secrets of the Vatican" also looks at the connection between the church’s requirement that its clergy must remain celibate and the high number of sexual abuse incidents among its ranks. Few were worse, or as explosive, than the case of the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the Roman Catholic order the Legionaries of Christ, a child abuser whose activities the church turned its back on for decades — and who also managed to father several children by at least two women.Maciel’s crimes were irrevocably exposed by a Vatican investigation released a year after the death of Pope John Paul II. Due to be declared a saint on April 27, the pope had been an ardent supporter of Maciel and the Legionaries, which developed a reputation for vigorous fundraising, encouraging young people to be priests, and standing as a bastion against liberalism. Brought to the brink of bankruptcy by the revelations about its founder, the Legionaries denounced Maciel in February and apologized to his victims, though the group elected one of his proteges its new leader.“Secrets of the Vatican” interviews one of Maciel’s sons, who describes the abuse he sustained at the hands of his father. Thomas said the film’s specificity about the nature of sexual abuses was necessary — because it’s still an overwhelming concern and because its seriousness may not have fully registered with the public. “How much more terrible it must be to be abused by your priest ... and the way [abusers] make the child feel guilty by saying, ‘You are the one who is going to hell if you say anything about this...’ You’re taking a little child’s deepest thoughts and trampling on them.”And yet, Thomas said, despite interviewing dozens of people over the course of the film’s near yearlong production, he discovered something almost miraculous: Only one person said the church's multiple transgressions over the past decade caused a loss of faith. “All the people who are strong critics of what’s going on, they are all devoted Catholics, and I think that is wonderful,” Thomas said.Further, though Pope Francis has yet to significantly address difficult issues such as abortion and contraception, he has raised the spirits and hopes of untold numbers of alienated Catholics. He has articulated a clear position on the growing economic gap between the world’s wealthiest and poorest people, an outlook he shares with U.S. President Barack Obama, who plans a papal visit on March 27.Whether Francis will be able to tie up Benedict's loose ends by adequately reforming the Vatican bank and its Curia, which oversees its bureaucracy, is a story yet to be told. But the new pope is “absolutely taking things on,” Thomas said.“He is so warm and spontaneous and natural. He has already achieved an enormous amount, and he hasn’t even been there a year.”

Dozens of pro-Russian protesters rallied Tuesday in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea against "the bandits" in Kyiv who are trying to form a new government — with some even speaking of secession. A lawmaker from Russia stoked their passions further by promising them that Russia will protect them.As a Russian flag flew Tuesday in front of the city council building in Sevastopol — a key Crimean port where Russia's Black Sea Fleet is based — an armoured Russian personnel carrier and two trucks full of troops made a rare appearance on the streets of the city.The Crimean Peninsula — a pro-Russian region about the size of Massachusetts or Belgium — is a tinder pot in the making.Protesters had torn down the Ukrainian flag a day ago, pleading with Moscow to protect them from the new authorities in Ukraine who have forced President Viktor Yanukovych to flee Kyiv, the capital, and go into hiding."Bandits have come to power," said Vyacheslav Tokarev, a 39-year-old construction worker in Sevastopol. "I'm ready to take arms to fight the fascists who have seized power in Kyiv."Earlier on Tuesday the country's parliament voted to send Yanukovych to be tried for "serious crimes" by the International Criminal Court once he has been captured.
A resolution, overwhelmingly supported by the assembly, linked Yanukovych, who was ousted on Saturday and is on the run, to police violence against protesters which had caused the deaths of more than 100 citizens from Ukraine and other states and injured 2,000.The resolution said two of Yanukovych's close allies — former interior minister Vitaly Zakharchenko and former prosecutor-general Viktor Pshonka who are also being sought by the authorities — should also be sent for trial at the ICC, which is based in The Hague.
Over the three months of street unrest and anti-government protests, it said, authorities under Yanukovych had systematically abused their power.Methods of torture, used by police against protesters, included holding activists naked in temperatures of 15 degrees below freezing, it said.

Wanted for 'mass murder'

"Parliament asks the International Criminal Court to hold Viktor Yanukovych and other high-level people criminally responsible for "issuing and carrying out openly criminal orders," it said.'If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kyiv to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government'- Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.Oleh Myrny, a deputy of the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party, said: "If we don't take this decision, we will not move forward."
A spokesman for the court said on Tuesday it had not received a request from the Ukrainian government to investigate the events leading up to Yanukovych ouster."A government can make a declaration accepting the court's jurisdiction for past events," said court spokesman Fadi El Abdallah, adding that it would then be up to the court's prosecutor to decide whether to open an investigation.Yanukovych fled Kyiv on Friday night with his chief aide. Ukraine's acting interior minister says Yanukovych is now wanted for "mass murder."
He has travelled to the pro-Russian region of Crimea and other Ukrainian cities since then, the new authorities say, but his precise whereabouts are unknown.

Former aide shot, spokesman says

Andriy Klyuev, a former presidential aide who is said by the new Ukrainian authorities to be on the run with Yanukovych, has been shot in the leg, his spokesman said.Spokesman Artem Petrenko said a "trusted source" had told him that Klyuev, the head of the presidential administration until Yanukovych was toppled on Saturday, had come under fire twice and was wounded, but his life was not in danger.Petrenko said by telephone that he had not spoken to Klyuev himself and he did not know where Klyuev was. He also said he did not know whether Klyuev was with Yanukovych, who fled Kyiv on Friday and is wanted by the Ukrainian authorities to face accusations of murder.​Parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchinov, who was named Ukraine's interim leader after Yanukovych fled the capital, said that a new government should be in place by Thursday, instead of Tuesday, as he had earlier indicated.Turchinov is now nominally in charge of this strategic country of 46 million whose ailing economy faces the risk of default and whose loyalties are sharply torn between Europe and longtime ruler Russia.Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has strongly condemned the new authorities, saying Monday they came to power as a result of an "armed mutiny" and their legitimacy is causing "big doubts." About 40 people passionate about human rights braved freezing cold winds to wave signs at passing motorists on Grand Avenue West in Chatham Tuesday afternoon.Their aim was to draw public attention to the treatment of a Jewish group who recently settled in the area.Rally organizer, Dave Formosa, said he arranged the event through a Facebook group after learning rumours that members of the orthodox Lev Tahor community were being shunned and even spat on."I haven't picked a side. Whether allegations (of Quebec child-welfare authorities) are proven innocent or guilty, everyone is entitled to human rights," Formosa told The Chatham Daily News during the peace rally.About 200 members of Lev Tahor, whose name means "pure heart" in Hebrew fled their homes in Quebec in the middle of a November night amidst allegations — not proven in court — of child abuse and neglect.Community leaders have said they left Quebec in search of a better place to raise their children according to their own religious beliefs.An Ontario judge ruled 13 children named in a court order be sent back to Quebec.Rally member Nathan Koning, 31, of Chatham said he sympathized with the Jewish group."Everyone should have the freedom to live their beliefs," Koning said."There is too much hatred in this world already," Koning's wife Alicja Trozynska, 27, chimed in.The couple held signs with their 17-month-old son Jonathan to show their support of Lev Tahor.
"I actually argued with a guy to know the facts when he called them pedophiles," Koning said."If I had to be in their shoes and knew my children were going to be taken away, I would drop everything and run too," he added.Clifford Quenneville, 66, and Susan Peltier, 61, of Calvary Community Church in Tilbury held an Israeli flag to show their support."We're here to build relationships," Quenneville said.Another woman travelled from Corunna to join the rally."Just because people look different, dress differently, is no reason to turn your back on them," said Lisa Smith.The 47-year-old plans to marry a Jamaican next year."I see it (being shunned in public)a lot," Smith said. "I'm told, 'Oh, you're one of them.'"Retta Cadotte, 32, of Chatham called the Lev Tahor "a complicated story.""The parents clearly love their children ... they haven't been given a chance to prove themselves," Cadotte said.Formosa said he visited the Lev Tahor community, north of Chatham, on several occasions over the last month and was always received with a warm welcome.

Sir: This letter is in response to various articles in your paper concerning the Jewish group, Lev Tahor.
Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are; I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” One can fully appreciate the weight of these words when reflecting on the 13 children of the Lev Tahor, ordered to be removed from their homes by the Quebec court.This case has become increasingly troubling to this writer, as I follow the story through various media. The extreme action by Quebec authorities is based on unproven allegations of abuse and a sub-standard education.Since when do we Canadians allow bureaucrats to separate children from their parents, solely on rumours and hearsay? The whole Lev Tahor story becomes more puzzling as one reads reports from third party officials that government and courts may have ulterior motives behind their actions. (See Chatham Daily News Feb. 1, 2014, ‘A Peek inside a Persecution Complex’).Furthermore, on Feb. 19 your paper reported that Quebec’s largest protestant group, representing 1,000 churches and 400,000 people, was told not to show up at the legislature hearings into the so-called charter of Quebec Values. The spokesman for the group, Glenn Smith, said the group wasn’t given a reason, but suspects that the PQ didn’t need to hear another dissenting voice (let alone 400,000 dissenting voices!). This charter deals with the secularization of Quebec culture, the most contentious aspect of the Charter being a band on conspicuous religious symbols in public service.It is well understood that this Charter has solid Quebec Francophone support, and consequently, stands against certain minority religious groups, particularly the Lev Tahor.
In closing, the Lev Tahor has chosen our community as a place of refuge.I believe it is therefore incumbent on us to provide them with a safe and secure haven, the same as we ourselves enjoy in this good city.
Perhaps more importantly, we should not leave them alone in their present distress, but seek to help and support them in whichever way we can.Charlie Van Kesteren, Chatham

Brutal cold grips the Prairie provinces; Saskatchewan braces for wind chills of -50

From the eastern slopes of the Rockies to shores of Lake Superior, the polar vortex is once again plunging Canadians into a deep freeze this week.After enjoying a brief respite along with the rest of Canada last week, the winter chills are back across the Prairie provinces and northwestern Ontario. Although the cold has been creeping in over the past few days, they reached an extreme on Monday morning as temperatures reached well into the -30s Celsius and the winds pushed those extremes even further, making it feel like it was in the -40s, and even a hair's-breadth away from -50 in some places. Although daily highs managed to reach around -20 C yesterday afternoon, providing a little bit of relief for winter-weary residents, it's another dip into the deep-freeze this morning thanks to the cold and wind.Wind chill warnings put into effect over the past couple of days are still in effect across southern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba, advising of wind chills as low as -45 C this morning. Although these conditions are part-and-parcel with living in the Prairies, these warnings are a useful reminder that this extreme combination of cold and wind can freeze skin in less than five minutes and raise the risk of hypothermia for anyone who is out in this weather for any length of time.This pattern of cold days and frigid nights is set to play out every day for the rest of the week, at least for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario. While the cold persists further east, southern Alberta should be seeing a bit of a warm-spell over the next couple of days, actually pushing temperatures up to around the freezing mark around Calgary for Wednesday and into the negative single-digits for communities further north.However, that isn't set to last. Moving into the weekend, this blast of frigid weather is promising to deepen even further, pushing over Alberta and spreading into southern Ontario and Quebec as well. The 'core' of this extreme cold is expected through Saskatchewan, as temperatures on Saturday morning could dip as low as -40 C, and wind chills could drive down into the -50s. With this cold spreading out, and pushing what's already impacting the prairies farther to the east, this weekend is setting up to possibly be one of the coldest so far this season for many Canadians.

Sun blasts out most powerful solar flare so far of 2014

The massive sunspot cluster that's been wowing us over the past month isn't done just yet. It peeked around the eastern limb of the sun on Monday night and blasted out a powerful X4.9-class flare — the most powerful so far this year.The solar flare was captured by NASA's Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory just before 8 p.m. EST as it crackled and exploded, releasing an intense stream of X-rays and a bright coronal mass ejection (CME):The strobing and strange x-shaped images in the video are the satellite's sensors reacting to the intensity of the explosion. The sensitive instruments are sometimes temporarily overloaded by incoming signals, and this affects the results we see here on Earth when the images are downloaded.This is the third pass around the sun for this active region.It formed in January and was called AR 1944 when it blasted out the first X-class flare of the year. Then on its second pass, when it was renamed AR 1967, we managed to capture it letting off an M-class flare just after the moon passed over SDO's view of the sun, forming a 'hidden' eclipse (not visible from anywhere on Earth). When the cluster reached the middle of the face of the sun, it had reached the size of the planet Jupiter, and was clearly visible in photographs of the sun at sunset.This latest pass is just starting and it's already given us a taste of what it's capable of with this X-class flare. The CME released from it could ramp up aurora activity in the days to come, but it will be interesting to see what this cluster does before it disappears around the sun's western limb in a week or so.

Quebec authorities are trying to commit “genocide” on members of Lev Tahor, the group’s leader says in a video released Friday.Grand Rabbi Shlomo Helbrans says in the 18-minute video that his fundamentalist Jewish sect had no choice but to move from Ste-Agathe to Chatham late last year in order to avoid a Quebec judge’s ruling to remove 14 children from two Lev Tahor families.“What choice do we have? We came to Ontario,” said Helbrans, who referred to Nazi persecution and claimed Quebec authorities “want to destroy us, to obliterate us… They want to commit a genocide.”Helbrans said his group tried to work with children’s aid workers in Quebec, as well as police and the courts, but that no one would listen to Lev Tahor members.“This place was full with joyful children, playing with such happiness and charm, with such purity and innocence,” Helbrans said in the video, which appears to have been made in front of a few followers shortly before sunset on Feb. 6. “The children would never tease or harm anyone. No one has ever harmed the children, at least not from our community.”Helbrans, who was among the last of more than 200 Lev Tahor community members to leave Ste-Agathe,  said the group’s “persecution” originally started with Israeli authorities. The rabbi said the Isreali government refuses to accept Lev Tahor’s stand against Zionism. Lev Tahor’s move to Ontario has provided the group a reprieve. But they still face legal troubles. In the autumn more than 500 million birds make there way from Europe to Africa and Asia and back again in the spring. Autumn migration begins about mid June at this time the first Waders appears, autumn migration ends in the middle of December with its peak time being mid August to mid November. Spring migration is from the middle of January at witch time the common Whitethroat and Great Spotted Cuckoo can be seen on there way north. The spring migration ends mid June. Peak spring migration is from the beginning of March to mid May, so you could say Israel has a continual migration all year round! The reason for this constant migration sequence is that Israel is located in between Europe and Africa and the birds that migrate coming from an amazing variety of climates and habitats and from a huge area .There are two different types of flight during migration. The first is active, when the bird uses its wings in a continual flapping motion. The second is passive, which is used by the raptors who glide. This group also includes storks, pelicans and Common Cranes that combine both migration flight styles. Song birds and other birds that use active flight prefer to fly at night using the day light to feed and rest. The bigger birds which use soaring and gliding, are carried by the currents of warm air Thermals that only exist during the day. The migration patterns of raptors are governed by two major routes of migration, a kind of celestial highway over Israel. White Pelican, Lesser spooted Eagle can be seen mainly on the western routes. Honey Buzzards and Steepe Buzzards prefer the eastern routes over the Rift valley .

In case you didn’t know (or perhaps you have such acute ornithophobia that you’ve blocked it out), Israel–at the crossroads of three continents–boasts one of the largest bird migrations IN THE WORLD.

Each year, one billion birds soar above this tiny stretch of ancient land, where Africa, Europe and Asia meet. Second only to Panama, this geographical intersection is one of the world’s largest bird migration paths, with more than 540 species traversing the airspace each autumn and spring.Dr Yossi Lesham, director of Israel’s International Centre for the Study of Bird Migration, explained that per square mile, the country has one of the highest concentrations of bird traffic in the world. “In one morning, we can see maybe 10,000 eagles.
