Pew survey: 6.8 million US Jews, but majority intermarry

New study finds strong connection to Israel, but not to observance of Jewish law

October 1, 2013, 10:29 am 1-The Times of Israel
* Approximately one-quarter of Jews said religion is very important in their lives, compared to 56% among Americans generally. Among Jewish denominations, the Reform movement remains the largest with 35% of respondents identifying as Reform. The second-largest group is Jews of no denomination (30%), followed by Conservative (18%) and Orthodox (10%).As with other studies, the Pew study found that the Orthodox share of the American Jewish population is likely to grow because Orthodox Jews tend to be younger and have larger families than Jews generally. In addition, while past surveys showed about half of respondents raised as Orthodox were no longer Orthodox, the Orthodox retention rate appears to be improving, with just a 17% falloff among 18- to 29-year-olds.Most denominational switching among American Jews, however, remains in the direction of less traditional Judaism. In the Pew survey, 90% of those who identified as Jews by religion and are raising children said they are raising them Jewish. By comparison, less than one-third of those who identified themselves as Jews of no religion are raising their kids as Jewish.Among inmarried Jews, 96% are raising their children as Jews by religion (as opposed to ethnicity), compared to 45% among intermarried Jews.On Jewish observance, some 70% of respondents to the Pew survey said they participated in a Passover seder in 2012 and 53% said they fasted for all or part of Yom Kippur that year. The numbers represent declines from the 2000-01 National Jewish Population Survey conducted by the Jewish Federations of North America, which found seder participation rates at 78% and Yom Kippur fasting at 60%.While most of those surveyed by Pew said they felt a strong connection to Israel, and 23% reported having visited the Jewish state more than once, the respondents expressed significant reservations about the current Israeli government’s policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians.Forty-four percent said West Bank settlement construction hurts Israel’s security interests, and only 17% said continued settlement construction is helpful to Israeli security. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said the Israeli government is making a sincere peace effort with the Palestinians. The Pew survey also asked respondents about what it means to be Jewish, offering several options. The most popular element was remembering the Holocaust at 73%, followed by leading an ethical life at 69%.Fifty-six percent cited working for justice and equality; 43% said caring about Israel; 42% said having a good sense of humor; and 19% said observing Jewish law.Sixty-two percent of respondents said being Jewish is primarily a matter of ancestry and culture; 15% said it was mainly a matter of religion. Most Jews said it is not necessary to believe in God to be Jewish. In the survey, 60% said a person cannot be Jewish and believe that Jesus is the messiah.

MK Shaked Blasts Israeli Politicians for J-Street Attendance

"Your participation in the conference grants legitimacy to extreme and unbalanced criticism of Israel," warns Bayit Yehudi MK..-By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 10/1/2013, 2:28 PM-Israelnationalnews

MK Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi/Jewish Home) had tough words Tuesday for the far-left J-Street lobby organization, and for fellow parliamentarians who attended a conference held by the group."In the past few days, the J-Street organization has held a conference in Washington," MK Shaked wrote on Facebook. "For those who are not familiar with it – the organization was established as a counterweight to AIPAC, the pro-Israeli lobby, by elements in US Jewry who claimed that AIPAC toes a line that identifies with Israel too much.""J Street has taken upon itself the role of Israel's loudest critic," she charged."Among its actions are the leading of a media campaign against the placing of sanctions on Iran by the US Congress; denunciation of the Cast Lead operation and its definition as 'an illegitimate and even criminal operation'; defining the takeover of the Marmara as 'brutal and cruel'; support for the US administration's demand to freeze construction in Jerusalem; pressure on the US administration not to veto the proposal by the Palestinian Authority to denounce Israel for construction in Judea and Samaria and more.""In other words – you understand whom we are dealing with here," she said to her followers."To the conference held by this group – for which the definition of radical leftist is an understatement – came several Knesset Members, like Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Yitzhak Vaknin of Shas, and Tzachi Hanegbi of Likud."And I am asking them – dear MKs, are these your friends? Are these the elements with whom you choose to identify? Your participation in the conference grants legitimacy to extreme and unbalanced criticism of Israel."Shaked added that it is clear, today, that the Obama administration's support for Israel is "less than absolute," and accused the MKs who attended the conference of "strengthening those who led Obama to these delusional places."

Iran FM accuses Israel's Netanyahu of 'lies'

Tehran (AFP) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of lying in his rejection of Tehran's overtures to the West as a cosmetic "charm offensive".
"We have seen nothing from Netanyahu but lies and actions to deceive and scare, and international public opinion will not let these lies go unanswered," Zarif said in an interview with Iranian television broadcast on Tuesday.Zarif was speaking from the United Nations, where Netanyahu was set to the address the General Assembly later Tuesday, the same forum where last year he used a cartoon bomb as a prop to underline how close he believed Iran was to producing a nuclear warhead."For 22 years, the Zionist regime has been lying by repeating endlessly that Iran will have the atomic bomb in six months," Zarif said."After all these years, the world must understand the reality of these lies and not allow them to be repeated."Netanyahu headed to the United States determined to use his UN address and a White House meeting with President Barack Obama on Monday to expose what he regards as "sweet talk" from Iran about wanting to allay Western concerns about its nuclear programme. At the White House meeting, Netanyahu said it was vital that "Iran fully dismantles its military nuclear programme".He urged Obama to keep US sanctions in place throughout negotiations between Iran and the major powers over its nuclear programme.Zarif said that "Netanyahu was the most isolated man at the UN" as he prepared to give his General Assembly speech.Foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham echoed Zarif's comments at a press briefing in Tehran on Tuesday.
"The pressure coming from the Zionist regime is down to its isolation and its anger that the policy of the Iranian government has been well received," Afkham said. She said Washington now faced a "major test to show if it can stand up to the warmongers."

Pope convenes cardinals for church reform talks

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis convenes his parallel cabinet on Tuesday for a first round of talks on reforming the Catholic Church, bringing eight cardinals from around the globe together in a novel initiative to get local church leaders involved in helping make decisions for the 1.2-billion strong universal Catholic Church. While the aim is for Francis to get advice, the Argentine Jesuit has already started making a mark on his own, with important Vatican appointments already made and clear-cut indications of the direction he wants to take the church that have elated liberals and alarmed many conservatives.Francis' recent interview with a Jesuit journal, in which he called for more balance between the church's rules on issues like abortion, homosexuality and contraception and the need for it to be a more welcoming, merciful place for all, has become the must-read mission statement of his papacy. It's unclear which of those issues feature in the 80-odd documents that will be considered by the pope and his so-called "Group of Eight" cardinals meeting behind closed doors this week. One core agenda item is certain: overhauling the Vatican bureaucracy, an antiquated administration that is universally disparaged as unhelpful to both the pope and the bishops it's designed to serve. The scandal over leaked documents last year showed the Vatican bureaucracy to be a dysfunctional warren of political infighting and turf battles, fueling calls for reform from the cardinals who elected Francis pope.Beyond the scandal, local church leaders have long bemoaned that Vatican courts take years to process requests for annulments and that Vatican offices are simply unresponsive to requests from them and lay faithful. Francis himself is a critic, frequently telling Vatican officials to be more pastors than bureaucrats. Just this weekend he told the Vatican police force that it was their job to stop the "devil" from creating internal wars through Vatican employees spreading gossip."It's a war that you don't fight with weapons, but with your tongue," he said. How the pope's chosen cardinal cabinet will interact, if at all, with the existing Vatican cabinet is a topic for much speculation among Vatican watchers. The Curia is organized according to a 1988 document "Pastor Bonus," which metes out the work and jurisdictions of the congregations, councils, courts and other offices that make up the governance of the church.Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, who heads the pope's advisory commission, said the planned reform won't just make a few changes to the document."No, that constitution is over," he told the Catholic channel Salt and Light Television. "Now it's something different. We need to write something different. But it's not going to take one month or two months."Indeed, no decisions are expected this week from the talks, and the pope has said reform takes time. That hasn't stopped reform groups from pinning their hopes for a more progressive church on Francis and his council of cardinals, who hail from North and South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia. The worldwide church reform group We Are Church has written Francis asking for greater say among lay Catholics about the selection of bishops and for church officials to be removed from office if they mishandled cases of sexually abusive priests."Our fondest hope is that Pope Francis will accept a delegation of our leaders at the Vatican," organizer Rene Reid said in a statement. "He has been reaching out to atheists, gays and others. He wants dialogue. We want that too."Conservatives and traditionalists, however, have reacted with dismay and downright alarm at the direction Francis has taken, particularly in the interview with the Jesuit-run La Civilta Cattolica, in which he bemoaned the church's obsession with "small-minded rules."American canon lawyer Edward Peters suggested that Francis wasn't referring to abortion in rejecting such rules, but rather more superfluous ones like the one dictating who can march under the flag of certain religious societies on feast days.Conservative commentator George Neumayr went further, writing in The American Spectator that Francis was in sore need of "correcting." Francis' "culturally conditioned liberalism threatens to undermine the unity and orthodoxy of the faith," he wrote.

Francis has issued a chirograph officially establishing the eight-member Council of Cardinals to help him govern the Church and reform the Roman Curia

andrea tornielli rome Francis has issued a papal chirograph officially announcing the establishment of his “G8”, the group of eight cardinals who will have the task of advising the Pope on the government of the universal Church and the revision of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus on the Roman Curia. The document published today and dated 28 September, mentions the discussions held during the pre-Conclave General Congregations:  “Among the suggestions that emerged during the course of the General Congregations of Cardinals prior to the Conclave, was the convenience in instituting a small group of Members of the Episcopate, from different parts of the world, that the Holy Father could consult with, either individually or collectively, on particular issues,” the chirograph reads. In the chirograph, Francis states: “Now, after mature reflection, I consider it opportune, through this Chirograph, to officially institute as a " Council of Cardinals ‘, whose task is to help in the government of the universal Church and to study a draft revision of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor bonus on the Roman Curia.” The Pope confirmed that the council “will be composed of the same persons mentioned above and may be consulted, both individually and as a Council, on matters I feel worthy of attention. Said Council, the number of components of which I reserve the right to configure as deemed adequate, will be a further expression of Episcopal communion and auxiliary service that the Bishops around the world can offer to munus petrinum.”

The details of the council’s structure have therefore not yet been defined. Since it is a new advisory institution (council), adjustments will be made along the way as needed. The Pope confirmed what he said on a number of occasions and that is, that the more direct involvement of certain members of the Episcopate in advising the Bishop of Rome was something that had been requested during the pre-Conclave discussions. The council only has one Italian member, Cardinal Bertello, who is President of the Vatican City Governorate. The rest are cardinal archbishops of various dioceses across the five continents. Only one of these is Emeritus. The council will not only be addressing the reform of the Roman Curia but will also be responsible for advising on the government of the universal Church. The “G8” will function as a group but members may also be consulted “individually” on matters he deems as important. The chirograph makes no mention of relations with other institutions which is further proof that it is still an open structure in the making, whose purpose is simply to advise and help the Pope.“It will boost the instruments already in place,” said the director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi in a press conference. “You will recall that advice is also given in various meetings such as the meeting of heads of Curia dicasteries and the commissions in charge of looking into the Church’s financial and administrative affairs, such as the Synod of Bishops. Then there are the bishops’ ad limina visits.”“Over the past months, the group of eight cardinals has been gathering proposals and notes from individual advisors working in their respective fields of expertise or directly from the Pope, or from the Roman Curia and the Secretary of State. About 80 documents have been gathered and circulated among the council’s members and its secretary, Bishop Marcelo Semeraro, who has prepared an initial summary.”The group’s various members, who are currently staying in St. Martha’s House, have already held several meetings with Pope Francis so the work in fact began some time ago. In recent days there were some informal meetings which the Pope did not attend. “There was a meeting on Saturday and there will be another one this afternoon,” Fr. Lombardi said. “Official meetings will take place in the private library near the entrance of the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace. The Pope will attend the meetings that will be held in the morning and in the evening.”Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Madariaga is in charge of coordinating the meetings. The Pope will give a very brief introduction but will mostly be just listening. Each of the eight cardinals will give their input on the various proposals put forth. “After this initial meeting, others will follow, so we cannot expect there to be any definitive conclusions, documents published or big decisions of any kind taken within the next few days.”The “G8|” and their work has nothing to do with the Pope’s pilgrimage to Assisi. “These cardinals are here so I have invited them on this pilgrimage. But the two events are not linked,” Fr. Lombardi said on the Pope’s behalf. No final communiqué is expected to be issued at the end of the council’s three-day meeting.

Cardinal Maradiaga: the reform of the Roman Curia will be a "long process"

The coordinator of the Group of 8 Cardinals set up by Pope Francis to advise him on the government of the Catholic Church and Reform of the Roman Curia, speaks about their task on the eve of their October 1-3 meeting

Gerard O'Connell Rome

The Group of Eight Cardinals from all five continents chosen by Pope Francis to advise him on matters relating to the government of the Catholic Church and the reform of the Roman Curia will sit with him in the Vatican for their first plenary meeting from 1-3 October. They will also travel with him to Assisi on October 4, to pray at the tomb of St Francis. It will be the Groups’ first meeting with the Pope since the Vatican announced its establishment on April 13. But there will be other meetings in the future, the Group’s coordinator, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, stated in Quebec last week, in interviews with Canada’s Catholic television channel -“Salt and Light TV”.There has to be a lot of discussion and a lot of discernment” about the reform of the Curia, he said; “it cannot be done in one month or two.”  He predicted that “it will be a long process of discussion and discernment.”He recalled that there have been several reforms of the Roman Curia – the papal civil service, starting way back in the 16th century. More recently, Pope Pius X carried out one at the beginning of the 20th century, and Paul VI conducted another one after the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). John Paul II carried out the last such reform in 1989 and this resulted in the Constitution “Pastor Bonus” (The Good Shepherd) which formalized and codified that reform, Cardinal Maradiaga stated. He revealed that on March 17, four days after his election,  Pope Francis invited him to lunch at Santa Marta, the Vatican guesthouse where he resides, and there told him that he was setting up the Group of 8 cardinals from all five continents and that he had chosen him to be the Group’s coordinator. The eight cardinals are: Laurent Monswengo Pasinya ( Democratic Republic of the Congo),  Oswald Gracias (India), Reinhard Marx (Germany), Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa (Chile), Sean Patrick O’Malley (USA), Giuseppe Bertello (Roman Curia, an Italian), Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga (Coordinator of the Group, from Honduras).  An Italian bishop, Marcello Semeraro, is the secretary of the Group.“He had everything in his mind then”, including “the name of the new Secretary of State”,  Cardinal Maradiaga told Father Thomas Rosica, CEO of “Salt and Light TV”  in a TV interview that was broadcast in Canada last evening, September 29.Since Pope Francis set up the Group, he said its members have been active, “collecting suggestions from all round the world.”  Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa from Chile, for example, “has put together 80 pages of beautiful suggestions” from Latin America.   Other sources say Cardinal Sean O’Malley (USA) consulted English speaking cardinals, while Maradiaga met with the Canadian Bishops Conference last week.As a result of these and other consultations, they “have put together” all the suggestions that they collected “around the main themes” and they discovered that “there is a convergence on many of the main subjects”.  “One can say that this is the work of the Holy Spirit, not ours”, the cardinal said, given the convergence of so many suggestions from different parts of the world.A Working Paper has been prepared for this week’s meeting, various sources report. It brings together the various proposals and suggestions that have been sent to the Group from different parts of the Catholic world as well as from officials of the Roman Curia, the papal civil service.  The Group planned to meet informally in the Vatican on September 30, before joining Pope Francis on October 1-3 for their first plenary session.“There has to be a long discussion and a long discernment.” Maradiaga said.  He made very clear that “it’s not just a case of taking the Constitution ‘Pastor Bonus’, and trying to change that. NO! That Constitution is over”, he stated firmly.  He made clear that they will not simply engage in a modification or adjustment of that basic 1989 text.  “Now we need to write something new,” he said.  He predicted that this process will take quite some time. But the work of the Advisory Group does not end with the reform of the Roman Curia, Maradiada said. Their task is much more than that, even this week: it is to advise the Pope regarding the government of the universal Church. In actual fact, though Maradiaga did not say this, Pope Francis has already indicated that he intends to solicit the cardinals’ views on other questions, including that of the Church’s pastoral approach to marriage (which includes the vexed question of divorced and re-married Catholics who are currently excluded from receiving communion).  He will also ask them for advice - possibly in this meeting, but certainly in future ones, on the reform of the synod of bishops which is part of the wider question regarding the exercise of collegiality in the Church, and the relationship of the ministry of the Successor of Peter with that of the bishops worldwide in the government of the universal Catholic Church.

Asian bacteria threatens Florida oranges

Washington (AFP) - Citrus production in Florida, the world's second largest orange juice supplier after Brazil, is being threatened by bacteria from Asia that has got scientists racing for a remedy.Known as citrus greening, the bugs cause the fruit to remain bitter and fall from the tree before they can ripen. The bacteria, spread by a tiny insect called an Asian citrus psyllid, deprives the trees of nutrients. The disease can remain latent for five years before its effects start to show, and by then it is often too late, said Greg Carlton, chief of the Bureau of Pest Eradication and Control at the Department of Agriculture in Florida."Through the years we have seen more and more insects and disease," said Carlton, who has watched the problem balloon since it first arose in 2006."Last year about 20 percent of our fruits dropped on the ground. And we will start the harvest season in a few weeks -- we are not sure whether we will get that drop again."In the 1990s, Florida citrus growers produced more than 200 million boxes, but this year that is expected to drop to 133 million, he said. Official forecasts are due October 11.Meanwhile, the costs of producing the fruit have more than doubled, from $800 an acre to $1,900 per acre in recent years, due to the high costs of controlling the pest.
"If we don't find a cure, it will eliminate the citrus industry in Florida," said Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat from Florida."And we will end up paying $5 for an orange -- and it'll have to be one imported from someplace else."Nelson helped garner $11 million in federal aid to finance research into the disease.
The citrus industry generates $9 billion a year and nearly 76,000 jobs in Florida, making it an important economic engine for the southern state. The disease has already cost $4.5 billion and 8,200 jobs since 2006, said Michael Sparks, chief executive officer of the Florida Citrus Mutual, citing a study done at the University of Florida."We have been hit hard, but we have put our full faith in our future into research. In fact, in the last seven years we have spent nearly $70 million in research," he told AFP.Growers have cut down vast numbers of infected trees and are using insecticides more frequently, as well as providing nutrients to bolster the trees' health.Sparks described these as "significant" changes that "we believe will keep us on course until a solution has been identified."Florida is not alone in facing heavy losses from citrus greening. Texas and California have also struggled with their oranges, grapefruit and lemons.Greening has also hit Brazil -- the top orange producer in the world -- along with other countries.US and Brazilian experts are sharing resources in the hopes of finding a way to eradicate the bacteria."People are thinking of making engineered plants that are resistant, like GMO-citrus," said Abhaya Dandekar, a molecular biologist at the University of California, Davis."So now we are working to help the plant fight the bacteria.son helped garner $11 million in federal aid to finance research into the disease. War' on illegal drugs is failing: study

Oct1,13-yahoonews
Paris (AFP) - The global war on heroin, cocaine and cannabis is failing to stem supply, as prices of these drugs have tumbled while seizures of them have risen, according to a study published Monday.Researchers analysed data from seven government-funded programmes that tracked the illegal drug market over more than a decade.Three of the programmes monitored international drugs trafficking; three focused on the United States; and one tracked the drugs business in Australia. The prices of heroin, cocaine and cannabis tumbled by 81 percent, 80 percent and 86 percent respectively between 1990 and 2007 in the United States when adjusted for inflation, the researchers found.Over the same period, the average purity of these drugs rose by 60 percent, 11 percent and 161 percent respectively. In 18 European countries, the street price of cocaine and heroin fell by 51 and 74 percent between 2000 and 2009.Neither the purity of drugs seized in Europe nor the price of cannabis on the continent was given in the study. In Australia, meanwhile, the inflation-adjusted price of cocaine fell by 14 percent between 2000 and 2010, and that of heroin and cannabis by 49 percent."During this time, seizures of these drugs in major domestic markets generally increased," said the study's authors, led by Evan Wood of the Urban Health Research Initiative in Vancouver, Canada."With few exceptions... illegal drug prices have generally decreased while drug purity has generally increased since 1990," they added. The global supply of illicit drugs had likely not been reduced in the last two decades, the study said, and the availability of cannabis and opiates like heroin may even have increased."These findings suggest that expanding efforts at controlling the global illegal drug market though law enforcement are failing," said the paper published in the open-access journal BMJ Open. The findings coincide with debate in several countries about whether to loosen laws on certain drugs.Uruguay in August took a step towards becoming the world's first nation to produce and distribute marijuana after its lower house of parliament approved a bill putting control of the drug in government hands. In a 2011 report, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimated the global illegal drug trade to be worth at least $350 billion (259 billion euros) annually.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Storm knocks out power, swamps Pacific Northwest

SEATTLE (AP) — An early winter storm dumped a record amount of rain in the Pacific Northwest, knocked out power to thousands and likely churned up a rare tornado Monday that ripped a hole in the roof on an industrial plant near Seattle. The most dramatic damage was at an industrial park in Frederickson, south of Tacoma. As thunder and lightning flashed, the wind uprooted trees and tore a jagged hole in the roof of the Northwest Door manufacturing plant."It looked from the inside like a wave going along. You could actually see the roof flexing," Northwest Door President Jeff Hohman said.Witnesses reported seeing a tornado in the area at the time, and the Weather Service sent a team to Frederickson to investigate.
Washington may get a tornado or two every year, but they are usually small. One of the largest was an F3 in 1972 in Vancouver that killed six people. No one was injured in Monday. About 100 employees evacuated and the business closed while inspectors assess a 40-by-40-foot hole in the roof. The wind also caused damage at a nearby Boeing plant, mostly in the parking lot, spokesman Doug Alder said. The storm blew out the windows of about two dozen cars and knocked down fences, power lines and trees. Some tiles were blown off the Boeing roof. Nobody was injured and there wasn't any damage to airplane parts or equipment.
Several thousand employees work at the Frederickson site, which makes parts and sections for just about every Boeing airplane, including the vertical tails for the 777 and 787.Parts of the Northwest got more rain in a day or two over the weekend than typically falls in the entire month."We basically had conditions well off shore that were very reminiscent of late fall-early winter," said Dana Felton, meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Seattle. With Mondays' precipitation still to be added, it's been the wettest September on record in Olympia and the second-wettest in Seattle.Nearly 8 inches fell in Olympia, topping a 1978 record and swamping the usual 1.7 inches that fall in that time, the National Weather Service said. Sea-Tac Airport's September total of 5.6 inches came second to a 1978 record, while downtown Portland saw 6.2 inches — the most since record-keeping began in 1872.Puget Sound Energy had about 12,000 customers out of service late Sunday, the Bellevue-based utility reported. Seattle City Light reported it had about 3,200 customers out of service overnight. Portland General Electric had more than 90,000 customers out of power since the storm began.___Tim Fought in Portland contributed to this report.

At least five people trapped by rock slide in Colorado mountains

DENVER (Reuters) - Mountain rescuers were dispatched on Monday to save at least five people buried by rubble from a rock slide in the Colorado Rockies southwest of Denver, officials said. The Chaffee County sheriff's department was alerted late Monday morning by an emergency-911 call from a woman reporting she had been struck in the head by a falling rock and that there five to seven people trapped in the avalanche, county spokeswoman Monica Broaddus told Reuters. She said rescue efforts were under way to reach five individuals still buried by in slide whose conditions were not immediately known.A sixth victim, described as a 13-year-old girl, was plucked from the rubble by a sheriff's deputy who was one of the first to arrive on the scene, Broaddus said. The girl was flown by helicopter to a Denver-area hospital about 130 miles away, the spokeswoman said.No further details on the circumstances of the slide or the conditions of the victims were immediately available. The avalanche occurred in a rugged backcountry area popular with hikers in the vicinity of the 14,000-foot (4,267-meter) tall Mount Princeton, one of the so-called Collegiate Peaks in Sawatch Range of the Rockies.(Reporting by Keith Coffman; Writing by Steve Gorman; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)

FRIDAY NIGHT NEARLY ASTEROID EARTH HIT SNEAK ATTACK

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

METEORS HIT THE EARTH

REVELATION 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

REVELATION 8:12-13
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) – A 15-meter (approximately 50 feet) asteroid, similar to the one that exploded above Russia in February, was detected hours before it narrowly missed the Earth over the weekend, Russian scientists said.Vladimir Lipunov of the Moscow State University and the Sternberg Astronomical Institute said on Sunday a network of telescopes operated by his team recorded a celestial body approaching the planet."[The asteroid] was discovered on Friday night by our station near Lake Baikal and nine hours later it flew within 11,300 kilometers of the Earth surface, below the orbit of geostationary satellites. It was about 15 meters in size,” he said. The scientists originally thought that it could be a man-made object, such as a spent rocket booster, but rejected the idea when they couldn’t find a match in the space junk catalogue.

Lipunov said his team had notified the International Astronomical Union of their discovery, but it is yet to be confirmed.A meteorite exploded on February 15 above the Urals city of Chelyabinsk. The meteorite weighed 10,000 tons prior to the explosion, according to expert estimates. About 1,500 people were injured in the blast, most of them by glass shattered by the shockwave.

A surprise asteroid which was only spotted by scientists on Friday night narrowly missed the Earth just hours later, flying within the orbit of geostationary satellites.
“[The asteroid] was discovered on Friday night by our station near Lake Baikal and nine hours later it flew within 11,300 kilometers of the Earth surface, below the orbit of geostationary satellites. It was about 15 meters in size,” said Vladimir Lipunov of the Moscow State University and the Sternberg Astronomical Institute. The incident will once again re-ignite debate about the threat posed by near-earth objects and what some claim are inadequate attempts on behalf of governments and space agencies to prepare for them.
In 2029 and again in 2036 a much larger asteroid named Apophis will fly very close to the Earth, potentially disrupting satellites. There is a one in 250,000 chance that the asteroid will hit the Earth, a threat that has prompted Russia to explore methods of deflecting it.According to Anatoly Perminov, the head of the Russian’s Federal Space Agency, the threat of an impact is somewhat more than remote. He says that a “scientist recently told him” that Apophis may hit Earth in 2032.Earlier this year, a meteor weighing 10,000 tons broke apart in the Earth’s atmosphere above the city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals, causing 1500 injuries.
The unexpected incident caused consternation because it coincided with the fly-by of asteroid 2012 DA14, which was much larger.Watch the video above for more analysis.Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/paul.j.watson.71-FOLLOW Paul Joseph Watson @ https://twitter.com/PrisonPlanet

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING

1/3RD OF SHIPS DESTROYED

REVELATION 8:8-9
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Typhoon Wutip: Over 70 Missing As Boats Sink

More than 70 people are missing after three Chinese fishing boats sank in a powerful typhoon off the coast of Vietnam. The vessels were hit by strong winds near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, according to reports. The number of missing fishermen has been put at up to 75.At least five boats carrying 171 people were caught up in rough seas whipped up by Typhoon Wutip, which is expected to make landfall in Vietnam's central region later with winds of up to 93mph, gusts of 125mph and heavy rain.Vietnamese deputy prime minister Hoang Trung Hai ordered a mass evacuation as he travelled around the central provinces.More than 8,000 villagers in Quang Tri province's coastal areas were moved to safer places on Sunday night.Another 35,000 in areas facing serious flooding, landslides and flash floods were also being evacuated. And there were also plans to move over 140,000 people in four other central provinces.
Wutip is the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam this season. The most powerful tropical storm in Asia this year was Typhoon Usagi, which caused at least 33 deaths in the Philippines and China earlier this month.

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

Likud MK implies Netanyahu will compromise on Jerusalem

Palestinian right of return is the the only major issue preventing a peace deal, Tzachi Hanegbi tells J Street Conference

September 30, 2013, 2:23 am 3-The Times of Israel
WASHINGTON — In a rare dovish statement for a member of the right-wing Likud party, MK Tzachi Hanegbi on Sunday defended Benjamin Netanyahu’s commitment to a two-state solution, implying that the prime minister was prepared to compromise on Jerusalem and uproot settlements if PA negotiators ceded their demand for a right of return for Palestinian refugees and their descendents“I think we will be able to give a good answer, a win-win answer, to almost every issue, including Jerusalem, the settlements – every issue has a compromise that can be relevant to both sides,” said Hanegbi during a panel with other Israeli parliamentarians at the annual J Street Conference. “The issue of the refugees cannot be compromised. It’s either here or there.”Asked by the moderator whether Netanyahu was indeed committed to achieving a two-state solution, Hanegbi, who is considered a longtime confidant of the prime minister, spoke to the transformations and shifts in perspective undergone by anyone elected to the Israeli premiership.Netanyahu, he said, “has shifted through the years like every leader… that comes to sit in office in Israel… [and] understands the limitations of the original ideology that brought him there. [Yitzhak] Rabin faced it when he was prime minister, [Ehud] Barak faced it, [Shimon] Peres – they didn’t get out of Judea and Samaria; they didn’t uproot the settlements; they understood it’s a gradual process and they have to go toward their goal.”
“I think that Netanyahu is not the Netanyahu that you and I knew 20 years ago,” he added.“What is preventing the two state solution is not Netanyahu,” Hanegbi continued, asserting that his meetings with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the PA’s former president, Salam Fayyad, had infused him with the assurance that the Palestinians “are genuine partners, they mean what they say, and they want peace. The trouble, Hanegbi told the crowd of over 2,000 attendees, arose when he asked the Palestinian leaders about their demand for a right of return for members of their people’s diaspora. The two state solution will be possible, he said, “If they will disassociate from the… dream that the refugees will flow back into Israel…. If they will understand that they have to make a historic compromise like we did, agreeing to the idea that we will not be sovereign in the places where our people were born, in the places where Jewish kings and prophets used to live centuries ago… they will have their sovereignty eventually.“If the Palestinian leadership understand that their big historic compromise is to give up this idea of the right of return, we will be able, in a short while, to reach an agreement,” Hanegbi asserted.Hanegbi served in a string of government positions over a decade in the cabinet as a Likud minister before joining then prime minister Ariel Sharon when Sharon left Likud to form Kadima in 2006. He later helmed the influential Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee before rejoining Likud ahead of the January 2013 Knesset elections. At the United Nations General Assembly last week, US Secretary of State John Kerry, who has worked intensively this year on the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, said the two sides had agreed to an intensified schedule of talks, with more direct US involvement, in an effort to reach a final agreement.“All of the issues are on the table: territory, security, refugees, Jerusalem – all of the final status issues are on the table,” Kerry said, adding that “we are not seeking an interim agreement; we are seeking a final status agreement.”Earlier Monday, in a keynote speech to attendees of the J Street Cconference, opposition leader MK Shelly Yachimovich (Labor Party) also talked up the basis for her belief in the two-state solution, to tepid applause.“As you know it is becoming increasingly popular for critics of the peace process to talk about a binational state. But those who support a binational state are promoting a bleak scenario that contradicts the basis of Zionism,” she warned.
“The two state solution is the only viable solution for us. It is the only solution that can allow us to fulfill the Zionist dream of a Jewish and democratic state,” Yachimovich added. She told the crowd that Labor would support Netanyahu “if he is serious about reaching a peace agreement.”“If we witness meaningful steps in the peace process and some of the government’s right wing elements threaten to leave, we will act as a political safety net,” Yachimovich asserted to one of the rare bursts of applause during her discussion of the peace process. “We would even consider the possibility of joining the government.”On Saturday night, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Israel’s chief negotiator in peace talks with the Palestinians, assured the conference that Israel was committed to a two-state solution and argued that a peace deal would effect fundamental change throughout the Middle East. ”Yes, we can love Israel and at the same time fight for peace,” she said.

Saudi cleric says women who drive risk damaging their ovaries

RIYADH (Reuters) - A conservative Saudi Arabian cleric has said women who drive risk damaging their ovaries and bearing children with clinical problems, countering activists who are trying to end the Islamic kingdom's male-only driving rules.A campaign calling for women to defy the ban in a protest drive on October 26 has spread rapidly online over the past week and gained support from some prominent women activists. On Sunday, the campaign's website was blocked inside the kingdom. In an interview published on Friday on the website sabq.org, Sheikh Saleh bin Saad al-Lohaidan said women aiming to overturn the ban on driving should put "reason ahead of their hearts, emotions and passions".Reuters earlier wrongly identified him as Sheikh Saleh bin Mohammed al-Lohaidan, a member of the Senior Council of Scholars, one of the top religious bodies in the birthplace of Islam.By contrast, Sheikh Saleh bin Saad al-Lohaidan, the person quoted in the sabq.org report, is a judicial adviser to an association of Gulf psychologists. His comments reflect the extent of opposition to women driving among some conservatives in Saudi Arabia."If a woman drives a car, not out of pure necessity, that could have negative physiological impacts as functional and physiological medical studies show that it automatically affects the ovaries and pushes the pelvis upwards," he told Sabq."That is why we find those who regularly drive have children with clinical problems of varying degrees," he said.He did not cite specific medical studies to support his arguments. The ban on women driving is not backed by a specific law, but only men are granted driving licenses. Women can be fined for driving without a license but have also been detained and put on trial in the past on charges of political protest.Sheikh Abdulatif Al al-Sheikh, the head of the morality police, told Reuters a week ago that there was no text in the documents making up sharia, or Islamic law, that barred women from driving.King Abdullah has pushed some cautious reforms aimed at expanding women's freedoms in Saudi Arabia, including opening more employment opportunities for them, but he has not addressed the issue of driving.

Inspectors set to destroy Syria chemical warfare capacity

Unprecedented campaign to disable Assad’s WMD production sites may require sledgehammers, explosives and tanks, official says

September 30, 2013, 12:38 am 0-The Times of Israel
On Friday, the UN Security Council ordered the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to help Syria destroy its chemical weapons by mid-2014.On Sunday, inspectors met with media in The Hague to explain their current plan of action, which is to include an initial group of 20 leaving for Syria on Monday.
The organization allowed two inspectors to speak on condition of anonymity out of concern for their safety amid Syria’s civil war; both are veteran members of the OPCW. Spokesman Michael Luhan said the men “are going to be deeply involved in Syria.”“This isn’t just extraordinary for the OPCW. This hasn’t been done before: an international mission to go into a country which is involved in a state of conflict and amid that conflict oversee the destruction of an entire category of weapons of mass destruction which it possesses,” Luhan said. “This is definitely a historical first.”Syria acknowledged for the first time it has chemical weapons after an Aug. 21 poison gas attack killed hundreds of civilians in a Damascus suburb and President Barack Obama threatened a military strike in retaliation. A UN investigation found that nerve gas was used in the attack but stopped short of blaming it on Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime. After a flurry of diplomatic negotiations involving the US, Syria, and Syrian ally Russia, Syria made an initial voluntary disclosure of its program to the Hague-based OPCW. Under organization’s rules, the amounts and types of weapons in Syria’s stockpiles, and the number and location of the sites, will not be publicly disclosed. The US and Russia agree that Syria has roughly 1,000 metric tons of chemical weapons agents and precursors, including blister agents such as sulfur and mustard gas, and nerve agents like sarin. External experts say they are distributed over 50 to70 sites. One of the OPCW experts with a military background said the “open source” information about the Syrian program is “reasonable.”Timothee Germain, a researcher at the Center for International Security and Arms Control in Paris, who is not involved with the OPCW project, said that in the early phases of Syria’s civil war, chemical weapons were consolidated into a small number of sites in order to keep them from falling into the hands of rebels. But when the prospect of a US military strike emerged, the weapons may have been redistributed over a larger number of sites to preserve them.He added that he is skeptical the current timeline can be achieved. “From a technical standpoint, it’s really a long-shot,” he said.
The investigators said members of the initial group of 20 will meet with counterparts from Syria’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday and begin planning. A week later, the OPCW mission will be expanded to a larger number of investigators who will arrive in waves and begin visiting sites and disabling equipment. At the same time, they will be examining sites for their suitability as places to eventually destroy chemicals and ready-to-fire weapons, which is usually done by incineration.“At this stage we’re looking at tens of inspectors” for the mission, the OPCW military expert said. The teams will include chemists, military experts and medical personnel trained to deal with the hazards posed by chemical waste.Protection for OPCW staff will be provided primarily by the Syrian government, with support from the U.N., which has a longstanding working relationship with the OPCW and lines of communication open with rebel groups. The OPCW expert said access to weapons sites in or near rebel-held territory would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, with the UN possibly helping negotiate safe passage. “It may be that we are not in a position to go to some of these places,” he said. “Our inspectors are all volunteers. This is not a mission that will be carried out come what may.”After the initial phase of destroying Syria’s ability to manufacture weapons, the actual destruction phase will take far longer and be more expensive, the second expert said. He added that “at this stage there is no reason to doubt Syria’s commitment” to destroying its weapons, adding that its disclosure was voluntary and credible.

Jewish Iranian MP lauds country’s religious freedom

Siamak Moreh Sedgh, director of the Tehran Jewish Committee, says Islamic Republic allows minority to practice its faith openly

September 29, 2013, 9:19 pm 8-The Times of Israel
The Jewish MP went on to assert that Jews in Iran may wholly observe Jewish law, as the country provides them with many essential religious services and permits them to operate their own religious facilities.
“For religious freedom, Iran is one of the most free countries,” he said. “You can go to synagogue. We can have our ceremonies,” Moreh Sedgh added.“In Tehran, there are more than 10 kosher butcheries, five kosher restaurants… There are today more than five Jewish schools in Tehran, and our children are completely free to go to Jewish school or public school,” he concluded.Iran’s is the largest Jewish community in the Middle East — estimated at under 9,000, according to a 2012 census — after Israel. There were some 150,000 Jews there in 1948, when Israel was established, and while some 70,000 immigrated to Israel in the next 30 years, some 80,000 remained at the time of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. That number collapsed in the years since, with some 20,000 leaving within months of the rise of Islamist rule.Moreh Sedgh accompanied Iranian President Hasan Rouhani to New York last week and was part of the country’s delegation to the United Nations. The move was seen as fulfilling Rouhani’s promise to give a bigger role in governance to minorities in the country.Moreh Sedgh has criticized Israel on numerous occasions, and has dubbed the Jewish state’s treatment of Palestinians “inhuman.”In May 2008, Moreh Sedgh said that Iran’s Jewish community would not mark Israel’s 60th anniversary. “We are in complete disagreement with the behavior of Israel,” Moreh Sedgh said at the time, adding that in Gaza Israel displayed “anti-human behavior… they kill innocent people.”In an interview with Russia Today in 2010, Moreh Sedgh denied that anti-Semitism existed in Iran, claiming it was a uniquely European phenomenon.“Jews are safe in Iran. There has never been a single instance of anti-Semitism in Iranian society. This phenomenon belongs to the European, Christian world,” he said. The Associated Press contributed to this report

SpaceX launches Canadian satellite from California

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — A SpaceX rocket carrying a Canadian satellite intended to track space weather launched from the California coast Sunday in what was billed as a test flight.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, at 9 a.m. under clear skies, eventually reaching its intended orbit.SpaceX launched an older model of Falcon 9 five times from Florida. This was the first time the Southern California-based private rocket maker flew the next-generation version that boasts upgraded engines designed to improve performance and deliver heavier payloads. The rocket carried a satellite dubbed Cassiope, a project of the Canadian Space Agency and other partners.Once in orbit, scientists led by the University of Calgary hope to start powering up instruments after a checkout period, but the actual mission to track space weather won't begin until next month. Cassiope carries instruments to study space storms in the upper atmosphere and their potential effects on GPS navigation and radio communications.SpaceX considered Sunday's launch a demonstration flight to test the capabilities of the improved rocket. It was the third launch from the Vandenberg base this week. Earlier, the Air Force launched back-to-back unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles that traveled 4,200 miles over the Pacific Ocean.Besides launching small satellites, SpaceX — or Space Exploration Technologies Corp. —has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to make a dozen unmanned missions to restock the International Space Station. SpaceX has completed three flights so far to the orbiting laboratory.
With NASA's space shuttle fleet retired, SpaceX is also working to modify its capsules to transport astronauts in several years. Until then, NASA astronauts are hitching rides on Russian rockets to zip to and from the space station.A SpaceX competitor, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., launched its first-ever cargo ship bound for the space station earlier this month. The arrival of Orbital's Cygnus capsule, bearing chocolate and clothing, had been delayed because of a software problem, but it docked with the space station Sunday.

Radio blackout cited in deaths of 19 firefighters

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Shortly before 19 elite firefighters perished in a raging Arizona wildfire, commanders thought the crew was in a safe place. No one had heard from the Granite Mountain Hotshots for 33 minutes. The crew didn't contact commanders, and commanders didn't radio them.
Then it was too late.A three-month investigation into the June 30 deaths released Saturday did not determine if the tragedy was avoidable, while outlining a series of missteps by the crew and commanders and revealing the more than half-hour of radio silence that occurred just before the firefighters were overwhelmed by flames. It's not certain why the crew left what was believed to be a safe spot on a ridge that the fire had previously burned and, apparently seeking another safe location, unknowingly walked to their deaths in a basin thick with dry brush. At the time they died, an airtanker was circling overhead, confused about their location."There is much that cannot be known about the crew's decisions and actions" because of the gap in communications, the report concluded. The 120-page report by a team of local, state and federal fire experts pointed to repeated problems with radios and contact with the crew. At one point, a pilot wanted to check on the firefighters after hearing radio traffic that they might be on the move, but commanders believed at that time the crew was positioned safely.Ted Putnam, a former investigator for the U.S. Forest Service, said the report didn't go far enough to dissect the decisions made by the firefighters. When the crew members went silent and did not notify anyone they were changing locations "there's an active failure there," he said.At a news conference in Prescott, where the fallen firefighters lived, Shari Turbyfill implored officials to draw stronger conclusions about why her stepson and his fellow firefighters died, and recommend immediate changes."I don't want another family to deal with this," she said. Her husband, David, said the emergency fire shelter in which his 27-year-old son Travis died had not been improved in 13 years."Policies, as they may be, need to change," he said.Despite identifying numerous problems, the report found that proper procedure was followed in the worst firefighting tragedy since Sept. 11, 2001. Investigators suggested that the state of Arizona should possibly update its guidelines and look into better tracking technology. All but one member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots crew died while protecting the small former gold rush town of Yarnell, about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix, from an erratic, lightning-sparked fire. Hotshots are elite backcountry firefighters who hike deep into the brush to fight blazes.Investigators described what became a chaotic day in which a fire that two days earlier caused little concern bloomed into an inferno that incinerated pine, juniper and scrub oak in an area that hadn't experienced a significant wildfire in nearly a half century. The day went according to routine in the boulder-strewn mountains until the wind shifted around 4 p.m., pushing a wall of fire that had been receding from the firefighters all day back toward them. The report suggested the crew was blindsided when the fire changed direction and surged in intensity and speed.Commanders did not find out the men were surrounded by flames and fighting for their lives until five minutes before they deployed their emergency shelters, which was more than a half hour after a stormy weather warning was issued.
Without guidance from the command center or their lookout, who had escaped after warning the crew, the men bushwhacked into a canyon that soon turned into a bowl of fire. The topography whipped up 70-foot flames that bent parallel and licked the ground, producing 2,000 degree heat. Fire shelters, always a dreaded last resort, start to melt at 1,200 degrees. The report confirms the crew knew about the changing weather, and just before 4 p.m. a commander warns the crew superintendent to "hunker and be safe."There was no word from the crew from just after 4 p.m. until just minutes before the fire overwhelms them — a gap of 33 minutes.Shortly before they deploy their shelters, a static-filled transmission comes over an air-to-ground frequency from a crew member at 4:39 p.m.: "We are in front of the flaming front."Other firefighters working on the blaze who pick up the transmission are confused, hearing the urgency in the Hotshot's voice and chain saws roaring in the background. They believed the crew was in a safe spot.In final snippets of conversation, the crew superintendent says urgently "our escape route has been cut off. We are preparing a deployment site" for the shelters. He's assured an airtanker is coming. But a smaller plane makes seven passes over four minutes trying to locate the crew to guide the big tanker, but cannot find or contact them.Heavy smoke blankets the ground.A helicopter joins the search but "there is no further contact with the Granite Mountain" crew, the report said. The firefighters may have failed to communicate during that crucial half-hour because they entered a dead zone, or because they were wary of overloading the radio channels. In the end, the same communication gaps that stymied the rescue effort hindered the reconstruction of the tragedy."We don't know that information; we don't have it," lead investigator Jim Karels said. "That decision process went with those 19 men."The fire destroyed more than 100 homes and burned 13 square miles before it was fully contained on July 10.No other wildfire had claimed the lives of more firefighters in 80 years.____Blood reported from Los Angeles. Hannah Dreier in Las Vegas and Michelle Price in Salt Lake City contributed to this report.

In terms of communication, Pope Francis “is better than Ratzinger, he is a modern man, he is the Pope of the Internet, he is the Pope of the world of globalization”.  That is the verdict of Umberto Eco, the world famous Italian semiotician, essayist, philosopher and author of the best-selling novel, “The Name of the Rose”.“I am convinced that Pope Francis is representing something absolutely new in the history of the Church, and perhaps in the history of the world”, the Italian writer told La Nacion, one of the main Argentinean dailies in an interview published today in Buenos Aires. He reacted with some discomfort, however, when asked by La Nacion for his opinion of Pope Francis:  “I am extremely annoyed when the whole world asks me what I think of Pope Francis.  It would be interesting to know what Pope Francis thinks of me, but I do not know…” “When some rather ingeniously ask me whether he (Francis) represents a revolution, I reply that revolutions are only evaluated after a hundred years”, Eco added.Asked what he thought of the fact that the Pope had written a letter to the founder of the Italian daily, La Repubblica, Eugenio Scalfari, ‘a non-believer, in response to two editorials written by him in that paper, Eco, clearly not enthusiastic, remarked,  “Well, it was an incentive for stamps”, in other words it helped sales.Pushed for what he really thought about this, Eco responded, “I would not permit myself to judge Pope Francis, who probably wrote this letter because it seemed useful and interesting for him to do so, and that is very good.”  He recalled how ten-years ago he had corresponded with Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, and this resulted in four long letters that were subsequently published as a book.Responding to a question as to whether he was surprised that the papacy has gone out of Europe for the first time in more than a millennium, Eco recalled that “it went out of Italy” with the election of Karol Wojtyla in 1978, and prior to that the last non-Italian pope was Hadrian V from Utrecht in 1552.  “When it happened with Wojtyla it was something new that showed that the Church was no longer an Italian power against the Germanic empire as it had been in the previous centuries, it was something universal.  And so it seems to me that it was quite normal that there would be another foreign pope after Joseph Ratzinger”. Surprisingly, the 82-year old Eco did not rate the fact that the papacy had crossed the Atlantic for the first time in history as “something exceptional” because of the airlines we have today. He did concede, however, that the choice of the first Latin American pope in history marked the end of ‘euro-centrism” in the Church.  “This no longer exists.  If the cardinal chose this Pope, it means that we are in a globalized world.  Therefore, because globalization exists, it is normal that they chose Argentinean Pope.  They could have chosen a Pope from Ghana, but the chose one from Argentina.  That’s globalization, and I don’t see how the Church could escape from this phenomenon”, he said.Questioned how he, as a world-famous semiotician, rated the way Pope Francis communicates with the world, Eco said “he is better than Ratzinger, he is a modern man, he is the Pope of the Internet”.  It does not matter that Francis does not use the computer, he said, “He is the Pope of the world of globalization.  I find him highly interesting, but he doesn’t surprise me. It seems to me that he is in tune with the evolution of the global culture.  What surprises me, however, is the curiosity of journalists or of the public at the fact that Pope Francis exists.  I am not surprised.”Umberto Eco admitted that he was “surprised” by “the fact that he (Francis) said ‘Buonsera’ (‘Good evening’)” when he greeted the world on the night of his election. “This was a rupture of a centuries old liturgy. They are small gestures that can signify a lot”, he stated.

Argentina’s Rabbi Abraham Skorka, in this interview, tells how Pope Francis and he are making history by their friendship, and reveals that they dream of travelling together to the Holy Land soon

Gerard O’Connell Rome

Never before in the history of Christian-Jewish relations have a Pope and a Rabbi celebrated their friendship by living in the Vatican together for several days, sharing all meals, including on two Jewish festivals and the Sabbath at which the Rabbi said prayers in Hebrew, and discussing what more  they can do together to promote dialogue and peace in the world. That is what actually happened over the past four days at the Vatican guesthouse (Santa Marta) where Pope Francis lives and where his friend from Buenos Aires, Rabbi Abraham Skorka, has been his guest from September 25 to this day. “I eat with him at breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.  He cares for me, and controls everything regarding my food to makes sure it is all kosher, and according to my religious tradition.  These are festive days, and I have to say certain prayers at meals and, I expand the last prayer and translate it. He accompanies me together with the others at table -his secretaries and a bishop, and they all say ‘Amen’ at the end”, the Rabbi said.By acting in this way, the Pope and Rabbi are sending an extraordinary message of friendship, dialogue and peace not only to their respective religious communities but also to the whole world.  And they plan to do even more together, Rabbi Skorka revealed when we talked together at Santa Marta, on September 27.He and the Pope are planning to travel together to the Holy Land next year. The Israeli and Palestinian authorities have invited Pope Francis, and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew1, wants him to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting of his predecessor, Athenagoras, with Paul VI in the Holy City.“We are dreaming of traveling together to Israel soon, and the Pope is working on this subject”, the Rabbi said. “I dream of embracing him at the Kotel, or Wailing Wall, and I will accompany him to Bethlehem, in the Palestinian territories.  His presence can help a lot at this moment when the peace talks are starting again”, he added.Skorka sees a deep spiritual significance for both of them in being together at the sites that are sacred to their respective religions. “I do not cease to be a Jew for him, and he goes on keeping his own faith. But the two spiritualities have to have a point of encounter.  We cannot live in a world where we reject each other, we must build bridges.”He believes his friend “has become a spiritual reference point for the whole world, not just for the Catholic Church” as was evidenced recently when he called for a day of prayer and fast for peace in Syria“Ours is a spiritual journey”, he said of their friendship which dates back to 1997 when Bergoglio became coadjutor bishop of Buenos Aires archdiocese. “Like him I don’t much like the protocol, and like him I too go for the essentials”, he added. Since then, they have done many things together, including producing an interview book – Sobre el cielo y la tierra (‘On heaven and earth’) that has been translated into several languages and will soon be in Hebrew too.“We hold to different traditions, but we are creating a dialogue that has not existed for centuries. Both of us believe that God has something to do with our friendship and with what we are doing.  There are too many coincidences for it all to be mere chance”, said Skorka, 63, who is Rector of the Latin American Rabbinic Seminary.“We come together without burying our identities.  I spoke to him about evangelization, and he stated emphatically that the Catholic Church cannot engage in proselytism”, he said.“We are not looking for a photo opportunity, but we want what we are doing to trigger a re-thinking about things. Ours is not a relation of ‘tea and sympathy’; that is not my way, and it is not Bergoglio’s way. We want to move ahead by actions, we must advance by building bridges, through a living dialogue; not a dialogue of words, but a dialogue of actions that reflect our commitment”, he stated.
Rabbi Skorka believes that “many Christians and Jews in Europe and the United States do not understand our friendship, for them it comes as a shock,”, but he is convinced that “history is made more by action than by political reasoning”.Last June the Rabbi met his friend, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in the Vatican for the first time after his election, when Skorka came at the invitation of the Focolare movement. He returned this time at the invitation of the Sant Egidio community which is holding its annual international inter-religious meeting in Rome in these days. It was his second meeting with Pope Francis, and he found him “full of energy and very much focused on his work” He believes the honeymoon period is over and the Pope is now “in the phase of hard work”. He was particularly struck by the fact that his relation with the Pope “is the same as before, and even deeper”, and he concluded that even though his friend has moved to a higher status in the world’s scale, “his humility has increased even more!”

Francis' “G8” on Curia reform to join Pope on his trip to Assisi

The Pope’s visit to the city of the patron saint of Italy is gaining in importance

Giacomo Galeazzi vatican city “We will be joining the Pope in Assisi and praying with him at St. Francis’ tomb,” Vatican City Governor, Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello said, confirming his attendance on the papal trip. Bertello is the only Curia member among the group of eight cardinals the Pope appointed to advise him on Curia reform and church government. The group will be holding their first meeting in the Vatican at the beginning of October and Francis had also wanted him to join him on the papal trip to the “Poverello’s” city.

The group will go to the “city of peace” on 4 October, as Vatican Insider reported on 26 April. Some of the members of the “council of peace” are currently in Rome for the plenary sessions being held by their respective congregations. The group of eight cardinals who will meet in the Vatican on 1, 2 and 3 October was set up to advise the Pope and not to take decisions, Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi stressed. He added that other meetings would follow after this initial meeting and that participants were expected to respect the confidentiality of the consultations. At 1pm on Monday, the director of the Holy See Press Office will give a briefing on the Pope’s meeting with the group of eight cardinals, with information regarding the nature of the meeting, the preparation work around it and the time frame. The “G8’s” members are: Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello of Italy, President of the Government of the Vatican City State; Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa of Chile, the retired archbishop of Santiago; Cardinal Oswald Gracias of India, archbishop of Bombay and President of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences; Reinhard Marx, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising (Germany); Laurent Monswengo Pasinya, Archbishop of Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo); Sean Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston (U.S.); George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney (Australia) and Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga of Honduras, the archbishop of Tegucigalpa and coordinator of Fransis’ advisory council. There is a great deal of suspense ahead of the council’s work so the Curia has warned the public to hold their horses: “This is the first of a series of meetings. Don’t expect everything all at once.” “Is it unthinkable to supplement their work with a secular agency that is completely outside the church orbit?” Jesuit historian of Christianity John O’Malley asks in an article published in Italian news magazine Il Regno. According to O’Malley, “such an agency is much more likely to ask questions that do not even occur to church members.” O’Malley pointed out two issues that should be born in mind regarding “the reform of the Curia towards greater collegiality” (one of the issues that has aroused many expectations in the first months of Francis’ pontificate): First is the fact that men and women today do not easily accept the idea that what they perceive to be a distant and faceless elite body can claim the right to tell them what to think and how to behave. Second, there is the difficulty today of finding a theological justification for the Curia—or, put more concretely, there is the difficulty of finding a theologically credible connection between Peter the simple fisherman of Galilee and Peter, prince of the apostles, heading a large bureaucratic central office.”Some of the areas that need to be remedied according to the American Jesuit and Professor at Georgetown University, Washington, include: the “lack of communication among the congregations, tribunals, secretariats and other offices within the Curia”; “the process of recruiting the personnel of the Curia, which sometimes seems to function more as a system of patronage than a system based on merit—a long-standing problem in the Curia.”; “a mechanism needs to be devised to ensure that the heads of the different bureaus are held accountable for fulfilling their duties.” O’Malley recalled that the doctrine on collegiality became the lightening rod of the Council. No other doctrine met more unrelenting opposition,” seeing as though “its enemies grasped its radical character and implications.” In the end, the ratified the doctrine, but only after “a higher authority” attached a “preliminary note” (nota praevia) to the “Dogmatic Constitution on the Church” (1964).” Collegiality, O’Malley pointed out “holds immense implications for the Curia” because it “means the Curia should operate not as a set of agencies in charge of the church but as agencies that serve lower agencies by helping them do what they are supposed to do.” The Secretary is the Bishop of Albano, Mgr. Marcello Semeraro, who was Special Secretary at the 2001 Synod. First and foremost, the group must advise the Pope on the “government of the universal Church”; second, it must “study a project of revision of the Apostolic Constitution “Pastor Bonus” on the Roman Curia”. This was promulgated by John Paul II on 28 June 1988 and split the Curia into five main sections: the Secretariat of State, whose central and pre-eminent role has given other Vatican circles many a bellyache; the Congregations; the ecclesiastical Tribunals; the Pontifical Councils and offices and bodies. There have been 3 major reforms in the Roman Curia over the past 110 years: Pius X’s “Sapienti Consilio” (1908) which adjusted the structures of the Curia to the disappearance of the Pontifical State in 1870; Paul VI’s “Regimini Ecclesiae Universae” (1967) which adjusted it to the Second Vatican Council and John Paul II’s “Pastor Bonus” (1988) which adjusted the Curia according to the Code f Canon Law of 1984.
