Army told to prepare for large-scale military operation in Gaza — report-IDF drills to conquer all of Gaza, as Israel said to have warned Hamas it is prepared to embark on campaign in Strip if arson kite launches don't cease by Friday-By TOI staff-18 July 2018
Israel’s political leadership has reportedly instructed the army to prepare for a military offensive in the Gaza Strip, to be initiated if the launching of incendiary devices from the Hamas-run coastal enclave into Israeli territory continues.According to a Channel 10 news report Tuesday, Israel has set Friday as a deadline for the flaming kite and balloon launches to cease. If this does not happen, Israel may decide it has no choice but to embark on a military campaign in the Strip, the report said.Israel sent a similar message to Hamas through Egyptian intelligence, Channel 10 reported, with the Palestinian terror group in turn indicating its forces will work to stop the launching of burning materials by Friday. On Sunday, the IDF’s 162nd Armored Division launched an exercise simulating a war in the Gaza Strip, including the capture of Gaza City. While the military said it was planned in advance and was not related to the weekend’s exchange of fire, the manner in which the exercise was publicized by the military led many to see it as a tacit threat to Hamas.Hamas is manning some 60 percent of its positions along the border fence in order to stop the launches, according to the TV report, and is expected to dispatch its forces to all of its posts by Friday.Citing Palestinian sources, the report said Hamas would only put a complete stop to the flaming kite launches if it can achieve some sort of accomplishment, such as the reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. The Palestinian Liberation Organization’s ambassador to Egypt said earlier Tuesday the crossing would reopen on Wednesday after being shuttered for more than 24 hours over technical issues. The report came as Israeli leaders touted the IDF’s readiness for a military conflict with Hamas amid ongoing violence along the Gaza border.During a tour on Tuesday of the army’s Gaza Division, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was already in a “military campaign.”“We are in a military campaign in which there have been exchanges of blows. I am prepared to say that the Israel Defense Forces is prepared for any scenario,” Netanyahu said.Over the weekend, Hamas fired some 200 rockets and mortar shells at Israel and the IDF carried out multiple strikes inside the Palestinian enclave. That escalation began after an IDF officer was moderately injured by a hand-grenade thrown by a Gaza assailant at the border on Friday. On Saturday night, a ceasefire of sorts was brokered by Egypt and other international bodies, though Israel was not directly involved in the talks. The violence has abated, but tensions endured and cross-border attacks continued.Asked if Israel was working to prevent a military conflict with Hamas, Netanyahu defended the government’s actions.“I believe that we are doing the right things. It would be worthwhile to pay attention not only to what we are saying, but to what we are doing,” he said.Netanyahu was joined on the visit by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, and the head of the Shin Bet security service, Nadav Argaman. While the senior officials were meeting in the Gaza Division on Tuesday, a number of incendiary and apparently booby-trapped balloons were launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip. A total of 17 fires started by airborne devices from Gaza were reported on Tuesday, including one that landed in the yard of a preschool where children were playing. In response to the arson attacks, an Israeli drone conducted an airstrike near a group of Palestinians launching incendiary balloons from the northern Gaza Strip, injuring two of them, according to the Hamas-linked Shehab news outlet. The Israeli military confirmed that one of its aircraft carried out the strike. In recent days, the Israel Defense Forces has stepped up this practice, after the security cabinet called on it to take a more forceful stance against the airborne arson attacks on Sunday.Recent months have seen daily arson attacks from Gaza with incendiary kites and balloons that have burned thousands of acres of Israeli land; regular riots and clashes along the border, which have resulted in over 130 Palestinians killed by IDF gunfire; and occasional outbursts of mortar and rocket fire by Gaza terrorist groups, which have prompted dozens of Israeli retaliatory airstrikes against Hamas positions. Dozens of the dead were members of Hamas and other terror groups, they have acknowledged. This violence has raised tensions between Israel and Hamas to the highest they have been since the 2014 Gaza war.In recent days, many officials and commentators in Israel, Gaza, and the international community have warned that another war in the Palestinian enclave was imminent in light of increased violence along the border, unless actions were taken to calm the situation.
Hungary’s controversial Orban to begin two-day Israel visit Wednesday-Hungarian PM will visit Yad Vashem and Western Wall, as well as meet with Netanyahu in a sign of burgeoning ties between the two leaders-By TOI staff-JUL 18,18
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban is set to arrive in Israel Wednesday for a two-day visit in the country, marking his first time in the Jewish state, in a follow-up to last year’s visit to Budapest by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The trip is a striking sign of burgeoning ties between Netanyahu and the controversial Hungarian statesman, who has been accused of playing up anti-Semitic stereotypes, and comes following reports of Israeli efforts to lobby the US to end isolation of the man considered a symbol of Europe’s move toward the hard right.Orban, who is traveling to Israel with his foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, will land at Ben Gurion Airport Wednesday evening and immediately travel to Jerusalem to meet at the Knesset with Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi. On Thursday, Orban will meet with Foreign Ministry Director General Yuval Rotem before beginning the official schedule of his trip, which will start with a meeting with Netanyahu at the Prime Minister’s Office.Under Netanyahu’s leadership, ties with Orban have warmed, prompting criticism from the local Jewish community over the Hungarian prime minister’s attacks on Jewish billionaire George Soros, which critics say toy with anti-Semitic stereotypes, and his past praise for a former Nazi ally. After the meeting with Netanyahu, which will include statements to the press, Orban will meet with President Reuven Rivlin and then, in the afternoon, tour the Yad Vashem Holocaust remembrance center.A year ago, Orban hailed as an “exceptional statesman” the country’s wartime leader and Nazi ally Miklos Horthy, who enacted anti-Jewish laws and under whose watch over half a million Jews were deported to Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Then, he launched and defended a poster campaign targeting the Hungarian-born Soros, accusing him of seeking to flood the country with refugees. On Thursday evening, Orban will be hosted for dinner by the prime minister and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, at their official residence in Jerusalem. On Friday, before returning to Hungary, he will visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City. The trip comes a day after reports in the Israeli media that, under Netanyahu’s orders, Israel has lobbied the US administration to “open doors” to Orban’s government, which has traditionally been kept at arm’s length due to its ultra-nationalist stances and the prime minister’s embracing of what he has termed an “illiberal democracy.”According to Channel 10, Israel’s Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer and other Israeli officials have met with members of the Trump administration “on a number of occasions” to encourage establishing stronger ties with Hungary under Orban.“The message we gave to everyone who was willing to listen was that the relations with Hungary are very important and that Israel would want to see US-Hungarian ties getting warmer,” an Israeli official was quoted as saying. The official reportedly cited Orban’s campaign against Soros as a reason for why the US may be interested in closer ties.Orban made strident opposition to immigration a central part of his government’s message, along with attacks on Soros, accusing him of seeking to flood the country with refugees and advancing legislation to curb the operation of organizations funded by Soros. Soros denies the accusations and Orban’s critics say the moves against NGOs are designed to restrict space for civil society in Hungary, an EU member state. In light of both the anti-Soros campaign and Orban’s praise of Horthy, Israel’s ambassador to Budapest, Yossi Amrani, initially sided with Hungary’s Jews in criticizing Orban. But at Netanyahu’s behest, Israel later retracted its criticism and accepted the government’s clarifications.Netanyahu was reportedly the first foreign leader to congratulate Orban on his reelection after a landslide victory in April, in which he led his Fidesz party to win 49.6 percent of the votes. In that phone call, Netanyahu invited his Hungarian counterpart to visit Israel, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office at the time. The Israeli premier also thanked Orban for “Hungary’s support for Israel in international forums,” the statement said.Netanyahu met Orban during a four-day official visit to Hungary last July, and similarly praised the Hungarian leader at that time for his support for Israel.“You’ve done that time and again,” Netanyahu said. “We appreciate this stance, not only because it’s standing with Israel, but it’s also standing with the truth.”
Midnight ‘false alarm’ sends Golan residents running to shelters-Rocket sirens sound amid intense bombardment by Assad forces of rebel-held town on Syrian side of the border-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-JUL 18,18
Incoming rocket sirens blared across the Israeli Golan Heights in the predawn hours of Wednesday morning, sending residents of the area scrambling to bomb shelters in what was later determined to have been a false alarm, the army said. The military would not say what triggered the system shortly after midnight. The warning sirens came amid a period of intense fighting between Syrian President Bashar Assad’s army and rebel forces in the Syrian village of Nawa, near the border with Israel. The sensitive alarm system may have been triggered by the fighting there.S. #Syria: Regime fired tonight scores of rockets at #Nawa using areas which surrendered in NW. #Daraa. https://t.co/xhSBazfQqB pic.twitter.com/ZWvvWs0Q0z— Qalaat Al Mudiq (@QalaatAlMudiq) July 17, 2018-Earlier on Tuesday, more than a dozen civilians were killed in airstrikes in Syria’s southwest, near the Israeli Golan Heights, a war monitor said. The regime and its Russian allies have been pounding the southwestern province of Quneitra since Sunday in a bid to retake it from rebels, after winning back most of the neighboring governorate of Daraa in less than a month. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air strikes killed 14 civilians in Ain al-Tina village on Quneitra’s border with Daraa which had reportedly been taking shelter in a large building.“They were all displaced from other areas. They included five children and three women,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. Also on Tuesday, some 200 displaced Syrians approached the Israeli border, some of them waving white flags, in an apparent effort to reach out to the Jewish state for assistance in response to Assad’s onslaught. The military said that soldiers used bullhorns to tell approximately the Syrians to back away from the fence. An IDF spokesperson said that this was due to concerns that they were approaching a live minefield near the border“Go back before something bad happens. If you want us to be able to help you, go back,” an Israeli officer told the crowd in Arabic. “Get a move on.”The officer was also heard telling the Syrians that “we don’t want to hurt you,” according to Reuters. After a few moments, the Syrians dispersed, the army said, and they could be seen walking back toward a displaced persons camp in the village of Bariqa, near the border.Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that the country would not accept refugees, but it does provide humanitarian aid to those displaced by the fighting. The military detailed aspects of its Operation Good Neighbor program last year.Since 2013, Israel has treated some 5,000 people injured in the civil war in field hospitals on the border and in public hospitals, mostly in northern Israel. In addition, Israel also worked with international aid organizations to open a clinic along the border in 2017. Since its opening last year, the clinic has treated some 6,000 additional Syrian patients.Israel has also insisted that the Syria abide by the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement, which was reached following the Yom Kippur War the year before, that established a demilitarized zone along the border between the two countries. Syria is still formally at war with Israel.Though the purpose of this demilitarized zone was to prevent further clashes between the two countries, by calling for a strict adherence to the ceasefire agreement, Israel has also established a de facto safe zone where fleeing Syrians can be spared from the Assad regime’s offensive, to a certain degree. On Friday, Israel shot down a Syrian drone operating in this buffer zone, which Israel said amounted to a violation of the 1974 ceasefire agreement.
IDF using autonomous drone system to try to intercept Gaza kites, balloons-GOSHAWK, developed by Beersheba-based RoboTiCan, identifies and neutralizes airborne incendiary threats without need for human input-By TOI staff-JUL 18,18
The Israeli military has begun using an autonomous drone system to counter the threat of incendiary kites and balloons in the Gaza Strip, Hadashot news reported Tuesday. The GOSHAWK system, developed by Beersheba-based RoboTiCan, uses optic sensors to identify the launch of airborne arson devices, then launches another drone to intercept the threat and neutralize it — a process the system handles from start to finish without any human input. The system has been deployed in the field in recent weeks and has seen some success.RoboTiCan CEO Hagai Balshai told Hadashot the system was orginally developed to counter potential threats by drones, but has now been converted to deal with the arson problem. For the past several months, Gazans have been regularly flying kites and balloons outfitted with containers of burning fuel, and sometimes explosives, into Israel. The kite tactic was introduced as part of the weekly “March of Return” demonstrations at the border fence, which began on March 30.It has since become a daily menace, with the devices burning thousands of acres of Israeli forests, farmland and brush. Some 2,500 acres of nature reserves and national parks have been destroyed. On Tuesday, incendiary balloons from Gaza landed in a preschool yard in an Israeli community, near the border as children played outside, and in an elementary school closed for summer vacation in another community. There were no injuries. In total, 17 fires were sparked by arson devices flown from Gaza in the course of Tuesday. The army says hundreds of incendiary devices have been brought down through the use of drones — though most have been operated by human handlers.
Satellite images show building leveled in alleged Israeli strike on Syrian base-22 pro-Assad fighters, including 9 Iranians, said killed in Sunday bombing of the Aleppo airfield, an alleged HQ of Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-18 July 2018
Satellite images released by an Israeli intelligence firm on Tuesday showed the extensive damage done to at least one building, in a deadly airstrike on a Syrian airfield earlier this week that was blamed on Israel. The bombing raid targeted Al-Nayrab airbase, adjacent to Aleppo’s international airport, in northern Syria late Sunday night, according to Syrian state media. The facility was identified in the past as a base for Iranian forces, including Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.“The Zionist enemy (Israel)… targeted with its missiles one of our military positions north of the Nayrab military airport, but the damage was only material,” SANA said citing a military source.Syrian rebel forces claimed that 22 people, including nine Iranians, were killed in the strike, the Qatar-based al-Jazeera network reported Monday. That figure, which could not be confirmed, was significantly higher than an earlier report of nine deaths by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor. The satellite images released on Tuesday by ImageSat International, a company that interprets visual intelligence, show the effects of the airstrike to one structure near the airfield. The building, described as a vehicle workshop, was estimated to be 50 meters by 12 meters (164 feet by 39 feet) in size. The building was also said to have received shipments from Iranian transport aircraft, flying into the Aleppo airfield.According to the Observatory, the airfield that was targeted served as a logistics hub to provide equipment and food to pro-regime forces fighting at nearby fronts, but it was not believed to store weapons. The Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside the country, said it had recorded a wave of blasts around Nayrab on Sunday night. The base was also reportedly previously struck by Israel on April 29 as part of a large raid that also targeted weapons depots near Hama. There was no comment from Israel, which rarely confirms such attacks.Suspected Israeli airstrikes have hit Syrian army positions near Damascus and in the central provinces of Homs and Hama in the past, including on July 8, when Israel was said to have carried out an airstrike on the T-4 military base near Homs, also thought to be used by IRGC fighters. That said, these bombing raids rarely occur as far north as Aleppo, though it is not unprecedented.Sunday’s strike came hours before a high-stakes summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, where Syria and Iran were on the agenda.Israel has been pushing Russia to remove Iranian-aligned militia fighters from Syria, and has vowed to stop them from getting a foothold anywhere in the country. Russia has reportedly only agreed to removing them from the Golan border region.“We came to a lot of good conclusions. A really good conclusion for Israel. Something very strong,” Trump later told Fox News, without going into detail.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met with Putin in Moscow last week, said Sunday that he had discussed the issue with Trump a day earlier.Netanyahu reportedly told Putin during their Wednesday meeting that Israel would not challenge Assad’s control of Syria, in exchange for freedom to act against Iran.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.
Rights groups urge halt to ‘collective punishment’ at Gaza goods crossing-12 organizations call on Israel to resume regular operations at Kerem Shalom, labeling the recent restrictions, imposed after rocket barrage, 'dangerous, irresponsible'-By TOI staff-18 July 2018
A group of 12 leading human rights organizations urged Israel on Tuesday to remove the restrictions it has placed on Gaza’s main goods crossing, in response to ongoing airborne arson attacks emanating from the Hamas-run coastal enclave. The organizations said Israel’s decision to allow only medicine and basic food products through the Kerem Shalom crossing amounted to an “immoral act of collective punishment.”The statement’s signatories included Gisha, Adalah, Amnesty International Israel, Ir Amim, MachsomWatch, Physicians for Human Rights Israel, Rabbis for Human Rights, and Yesh Din.While the groups acknowledged that the damage incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza has caused Israeli fields and farmland was “severe,” they said the Israeli response “cannot be to deliberately harm innocent civilians.”They called the measure “dangerous” and “irresponsible,” noting that Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s decision Monday to halt fuel transfer into the Strip “will stop generators used to power homes, businesses, and other essential services,” exacerbating the severe humanitarian crisis there.“Closing Gaza’s major crossing for movement of goods, the main lifeline for almost two million people, half of whom are children, constitutes an illegal and immoral act of collective punishment,” they said.Liberman’s office announced on Monday that between Tuesday and Sunday, no fuel will enter Gaza through Kerem Shalom. The entry of food and medicine will continue, but will require explicit permission from Israel. Additionally, Gaza fishermen will only be allowed to venture three kilometers (1.8 miles) into the Mediterranean Sea, down from the current six kilometers (3.7 miles). Those restrictions were added to those imposed by Israel last week, when it halted exports of Gazan produce and stopped most goods from going into the Strip. The military said the closure would continue as long as Palestinians persist in launching incendiary kites and balloons into Israel.Liberman’s office said the restrictions were toughened due to “continued terror attempts” by Hamas, which is allowing, encouraging and participating in flying incendiary devices and bombs into Israel with balloons and kites.Hamas warned Israel of “dangerous consequences” for the new fresh restrictions, calling them “a crime against humanity.”The European Union also criticized the restrictions, saying it “expects Israel to reverse these decisions” which risked “further aggravating the already dire economic situation in Gaza.”Kerem Shalom is the only cargo crossing between Gaza and Israel. The Strip has been subject to a strict blockade for the past 11 years that Israel says is necessary to prevent terrorist groups from bringing weapons into the Strip. Egypt also tightly controls the Rafah border crossing into the Sinai. On Tuesday, incendiary balloons from Gaza landed in a preschool yard in an Israeli community, near the border as children played outside, and in an elementary school closed for summer vacation in another community. There were no injuries.Recent months have seen daily arson attacks from Gaza with incendiary kites and balloons that have burned thousands of acres of Israeli forests, farmland and brush. Some 2,500 acres of nature reserves and national parks have been destroyed.Adam Rasgon contributed to this report.

California wildfire moves toward Yosemite, small mountain towns-[Reuters]-By Dan Whitcomb-YAHOONEWS-July 18, 2018
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A fierce California wildfire crept toward the boundary of Yosemite National Park on Tuesday as crews fought through steep, often inaccessible terrain and thick smoke to protect a string of small mountain communities in the path of the flames. The so-called Ferguson Fire, which started on Friday night and killed a firefighter the following day, had charred nearly 19 square miles (49 square kilometers) by Tuesday afternoon and was burning just a few miles (km) outside the park."The fire continues to grow," fire spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said. "There's a lot of vegetation and it's very, very dry, there's a significant amount of beetle kill (in the trees).""The story is, this is steep terrain," Freeman said. "You would have a difficult time walking on some of these slopes or getting people into these canyons. There are a lot of places where we simply cannot put people because it's not safe."Making the job more difficult was an inversion layer of thick black smoke pouring off the flames and visible for miles (km) that prevented water-dropping helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from flying low into narrow canyons, she said.State Route 140, a western entry point into Yosemite, remained closed by the flames. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the conflagration. As the blaze marched slowly east and south from its starting point at Savage Trading Post, 20 miles (32 km) southwest of the park's boundary in the Sierra Nevada mountains, fire managers warned that the communities of Jerseydale, Mariposa Pines, Clearing House and Incline could be in danger.A mandatory evacuation was ordered over the weekend for more than 100 homes deemed most threatened in Jerseydale, Freeman said.Firefighter Braden Varney was killed on Saturday when a bulldozer he was using to cut a fire break overturned, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.Varney is the 10th U.S. wildland firefighter to die in the line of duty this year, according to National Interagency Fire Center data.California has had its worst start to the fire season in a decade, with more than 220,421 acres (89,201 hectares) blackened and six major wildfires burning statewide as of Tuesday, according to the agency.Wildfires have already burned more than 3.3 million acres (1.3 million hectares) across the United States this year, more than the year-to-date average of about 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) over the past 10 years. The risk of large wildfires is set to ease in much of the Southwest and Rocky Mountains due to expected summer rains, but risk levels will remain high in California through at least October, according to the agency.(Reporting by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Sandra Maler and Tom Hogue)
June rainfall breaks records in Yellowknife-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-July 18, 2018
Rain rain go away, come again another day.If you've been in Yellowknife this summer you might have had cause to sing that refrain. That's because rainfall in the city broke records last month.Dan Kulak, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said at 114 millimetres, it was the city's wettest June on record for the last 76 years. That's compared to an average of about 29 millimetres in June, and 40 millimetres in July and August."Really June, July and August [have] met their rainfall total in just the first month of the summer," Kulak said. But Kulak said the massive rainfall should be put in the context of the preceding month. Yellowknife saw only 11 millimetres in May, with the month falling somewhere in the middle as the 34th driest May in the past 76 years."So you really can have changes in the weather from one month to the next," he said.Yellowknife isn't the only community in the Northwest Territories where sunny summer plans have been dashed due to rain clouds. Kulak said about a week ago Fort Liard had a "major rain event.""It depends where the low pressure systems develop," he said.- FROM 2017 | Wettest Aug. 19 in 65 years wreaks havoc on Yellowknife buildings, boatsFort Simpson also had 76 millimetres of precipitation in June putting it at the 12th wettest June in the community on record in the past 112 years. It typically has an average monthly rainfall of about 51 millimetres. But not everywhere across the territory has been feeling the rain.In Inuvik, for example, total precipitation for June was only 3.5 millimetres making it the seventh driest June in the community over the past 61 years. What to expect -Halfway through July so far, there has been about 34 millimetres of precipitation in the Yellowknife area, already almost exceeding the monthly average. Kulak said the summer forecast suggests it will be on the cooler side for much of the Northwest Territories and there's not really a "good, clear signal as to what we can expect" with precipitation."I mean we don't really know how dry or how wet it's going to be," he said."Maybe we'll get a little bit more, and maybe it'll stay kind of dry." While the rain may be giving some people the summer blues it does have some benefits — keeping wildfires at bay. But Kulak cautions that we're not out of the woods just yet."Things can change in as little as a week from a large dump of rain, to drying right out and the potential for fires. So keep vigilant when you're out there. Don't think that it's wet all the time or wet everywhere or is going to remain that way and just enjoy the summer."

Iran ‘preparing’ to enrich uranium if nuclear deal fails, official says-Spokesman for Tehran's nuclear agency says it is taking steps towards boosting centrifuge work should talks with Europe fall through-By AFP-TOI-JUL 18,18
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran is ready to boost its uranium enrichment to higher levels if talks with Europe on salvaging the nuclear deal fail, a top official said Tuesday.“We have of course adopted some measures in order to prepare the ground for eventually increasing the level of enrichment if it is needed and if the negotiations with the Europeans fail,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman and vice-president of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, told a news conference in Tehran.“We are of course continuing to carry out and implement our obligations based on the JCPOA,” he said, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that put strict limits on its atomic program in return for sanctions relief.“But at the same time, taking every scenario into consideration, we are preparing ourselves,” he added. The United States announced in May that it was abandoning the 2015 agreement and reimposing nuclear-related sanctions, threatening global companies with heavy penalties if they continue to operate in Iran.In a bid to save the accord, the EU and European parties to the deal — Britain, France, and Germany — presented a series of economic “guarantees” to Iran this month, but these were judged “insufficient” by Tehran.Negotiations are continuing, and foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Monday they could last several “weeks,” according to state television. In June, in a bid to mount pressure on the Europeans, Iran announced a plan to increase its uranium enrichment capacity with new centrifuges in the event that the agreement collapses, while still denying any desire to build a nuclear weapon.Under the 2015 agreement, Iran can only enrich uranium to 3.67 percent — far below the roughly 90% level needed for nuclear weapons.
Syrian army pounds southern city of Nawa, reports of casualties: residents-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 18, 2018
AMMAN (Reuters) - The Syrian army late on Tuesday launched intensive aerial strikes on the city of Nawa in southern Deraa province with reports of dozens of civilian casualties as the army pressed a Russian-backed offensive in the area.A resident said dozens of missiles were also fired on the heavily populated city that lies near Quneitra province adjoining the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights where the army moved earlier this week to control the remaining parts of the country's southwest in rebel hands."It's like doomsday," said Malek al Ghawi in a text message sent to Reuters, adding there were "many corpses in the streets and everyone is unable to pull them.""We don't know where to take the injured, the town has been burnt," Abu Hashem, another resident said. The city of Nawa, in which at least 100,000 people still live, is the largest urban centre left in rebel hands in Deraa province, where a Russian-backed offensive begun last month defeated rebels across a swathe of territory near Jordan and Israel. The artillery and aerial bombardment came only hours after thousands of displaced people who had taken shelter along the Israeli border returned to the city that the army has nearly completely besieged. They came back after reports that rebels had reached a surrender deal with the Russian military that would spare the city bombardment, another resident said. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a hospital in the city was put out of action as a result of the bombardment, citing what it said were high casualties with "tens of people killed and injured."The Syrian opposition accuses Russia and its allies of exacting a harsh punishment on civilians by heavily bombing rebel-held towns, forcing mass displacement of populated areas and causing wide scale destruction. They say the intensity of the bombardment has forced rebels in many towns to sign surrender deals that offer safe passage to those who want to move to other opposition areas after handing over their weapons, while enlisting those who stay into the military. Some of the heavy army bombardment came from al-Haara, a strategically located hill captured from rebels on Monday and overlooking the Golan that is close to Nawa city. The shelling also targeted various rebel-held villages in Quneitra province located only a few kilometers away from the Israel border where tens of thousands of people had taken shelter from the offensive.(Reporting by Suleiman Al-Khalidi; Editing by Sandra Maler and Chris Reese)
DNA leads Indiana police to suspect in 1988 murder case-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 19, 2018
(Reuters) - An Indiana man was charged on Monday with sexually assaulting and murdering an 8-year-old girl in 1988, police said, a day after they said he had confessed to the crime.John Miller, 59, of Grabill, Indiana, appeared briefly in court in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to face charges of murdering April Tinsley, officials said.DNA evidence and records on publicly accessible genealogical websites helped investigators track down the suspect, the Fort Wayne police department said in a court filing on Sunday. That followed a pattern similar to that used to track down the "Golden State Killer" in California earlier this year.Tinsley's mother reported her missing from her family home on April 1, 1988. Investigators found her body three days later, about 20 miles (32 km) away.Miller was being held at the Allen County Jail on Monday after being preliminarily charged with murder, child molestation and confinement of someone under 14 years old, jail records showed.Police asked Miller at his residence before his arrest if he had any idea why the police wanted to talk with him. Miller replied, "April Tinsley," according to the affidavit.Police say Miller confessed to raping and then choking April Tinsley to death in April 1988 at his mobile home. The arrest affidavit said that police, using outside labs, compared DNA evidence with information on genealogical websites, which narrowed the search to Miller and his brother.Earlier this month, police began to watch Miller, and took three used condoms from his trash earlier this month, it said.It was not clear from court records whether Miller had retained an attorney. Calls on Monday to the prosecutor's office were not immediately returned.According to court papers, police in 1990 discovered writing on a barn wall near Fort Wayne that said: "I kill 8 year old April M Tinsley did you find her other shoe haha I will kill agin'."(Reporting by Bernie Woodall in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Editing by Scott Malone and Dan Grebler)
