24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Abbas meets pope, invites him to visit Holy Land
Vatican
City – Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, on Thursday, invited Pope
Francis to visit the Holy Land, matching a standing invitation from
Israel.
The pontiff, who has made many appeals for peace in the Middle East since his election in March, has already accepted an invitation from Israeli President Shimon Peres, and is widely expected to make the trip next year.
“I invited him to the Holy Land,” Abbas said, after a 30-minute private meeting with the pope in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace.
After the private part of their meeting, the pope gave Abbas a pen, telling him “surely, you have a lot of things you have to sign”.
Abbas responded: “I hope to sign a peace treaty with Israel with this pen.”
Both of Francis’s two immediate predecessors, Benedict and John Paul, visited Holy Land sites in Israel and the Palestinian territories. (Reuters/NAN

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday invited Pope Francis to visit the Holy Land,
matching an invitation from Israel. The pontiff, who has made

has already told Israel he will visit and is widely expected to make the
trip next year."I invited him to the Holy Land," Abbas said
after a 30-minute private audience with the pope in the Vatican's
Apostolic Palace, their first meeting. After the private part of
the meeting, the pope gave Abbas a pen, telling him "surely, you have a
lot of things you have to sign".Abbas responded: "I hope to sign a peace treaty with Israel with this pen."Both
of Francis's two immediate predecessors, Benedict and John Paul,
visited Holy Land sites in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Most
Christian Holy Land sites are in Israel but Bethlehem, the birthplace
of Jesus, is in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, in the Palestinian
territories. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus is
said to have been buried, is in East Jerusalem, which Palestinians want
as part of their future state.Abbas and Francis discussed the
civil war in Syria and the prospects for peace between Israelis and
Palestinians, the Vatican said in a statement.Using the same
language it used when Israeli President Shimon Peres visited Francis in
April, the Vatican urged both sides to make "courageous and determined"
decisions to move closer to peace, with the help of the international
community.Israeli and Palestinian negotiators began a new round
of talks on Monday, picking up the tempo of their meetings at the
request of the United States. The two sides resumed direct peace
negotiations in late July after three years of stalemate and have
conducted a series of discussions far from the gaze of the media over
recent weeks, without any outward hint of the slightest breakthrough.(Reporting By Philip Pullella; Editing by Andrew Heavens)-Reuters.
Vatican City (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on
Thursday said he had invited Pope Francis to the Middle East, during an
audience in the Vatican.Speaking to Vatican foreign affairs
official Dominique Mamberti after the talks, he said: "It was a pleasure
and I invited him to the Holy Land".Abbas gave the pope a
ceramic panel with a view of Bethlehem and a Bible as gifts, while
Francis gave him a decorative pen with which Abbas said he hoped to sign
a peace agreement with Israel."Soon, soon," the pope responded.
Israeli President Shimon Peres also invited Francis during a visit earlier this year and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to be received by the pope on Wednesday next week.Francis has already said he would like to travel to the Middle East but the Vatican has not confirmed the trip, despite a report by Israel's Channel 2 television that it will take place in March.Francis has said he would like to visit with patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians.
Abbas is the fourth Middle East leader to meet Pope Francis after Peres, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and King Abdullah of Jordan.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Saudi Arabia and Chad easily won
coveted seats on the U.N. Security Council Thursday, despite criticism
from human rights groups. Nigeria, Lithuania and Chile also won seats.
The five candidates endorsed by regional groups faced no opposition after there were no contested races for the first time in several years. The countries were elected in the first round of voting by the 193-member General Assembly. Lithuania was the top vote-getter with 187 votes followed by Nigeria and Chile with 186 votes, Chad with 184 votes and Saudi Arabia with 176 votes.Security Council seats are highly coveted because they give countries a strong voice in matters dealing with international peace and security, in places like Syria, Iran and North Korea, as well as the U.N.'s far-flung peacekeeping operations. The 15-member council includes five permanent members with veto power — the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France — and 10 nonpermanent members elected for two-year terms. The five countries elected Thursday will assume their posts on Jan. 1 and serve through the end of 2015. They will replace Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo.Philippe Bolopion, United Nations director for Human Rights Watch, denounced the election of Chad, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia."The prestige of a seat at the world's foremost diplomatic table should prompt the new members to get their house in order," he said."Chad should put an end to the recruitment of child soldiers, which earned it a spot on the U.N. list of shame," he said. "Saudi Arabia should end its crackdown on human rights activists and grant women their full rights."Bolopion also criticized Nigeria, saying it should "end chronic abuse by security forces and better protect civilians in the north" from attacks by the Boko Haram terrorist network.Hillel Neuer, executive director of Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch, accused Saudi Arabia of denying women the right to vote, drive a car or travel without the permission of a male relative. He also accused it of "praising and shielding Sudan" whose president, Omar al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, and Neuer said Chad should not have oversight on U.N. peacekeeping operations as long it employs child soldiers.Chad, Saudi Arabia and Lithuania have never served on the U.N.'s most powerful body while Nigeria and Chile have both been on the council four times previously.Seats in the Security Council are allocated by region, and regional groups nominate candidates. There are often hotly contested races. In 2007, for example, a runoff between Guatemala and Venezuela went 47 rounds before Panama was finally elected as the Latin America candidate. This year, there were initially two candidates for a West African seat but Gambia dropped out last week in favor of Nigeria. To win, each country must obtain support of two-thirds of all General Assembly members present. Because balloting is secret, there is intense lobbying for votes by candidates, even in uncontested races, to ensure they get the minimum number needed for victory — and to see who gets the highest vote.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union's highest court
rejected on Thursday a German man's challenge to the inclusion of his
fingerprints in his passport, saying such data helped to prevent
identity fraud and to curb illegal immigration.EU rules requiring newly issued biometric passports to include
fingerprints came into effect in 2004, though a full rollout has taken
many years. They apply to all EU member states except Britain and
Ireland."The contested measures pursue... the general interest objective of
preventing illegal entry into the EU," the European Court of Justice
said in a statement."To that end, they are intended to prevent both the falsification of
passports and the fraudulent use thereof," the Luxembourg-based court
said.
Illegal immigration has become a hot political issue in the 28-nation EU. Migrants make almost daily attempts to cross the Mediterranean, often on flimsy, overcrowded vessels, from North Africa to Europe in search of a better life.Facing similar problems, the United States has installed high-tech systems to track the movement of immigrants and other foreigners at airports, including taking photographs and fingerprints. In Britain, an independent report recently recommended the fingerprinting of thousands of immigrants caught trying to enter the country.(Reporting By John O'Donnell, editing by Gareth Jones)
