North Korea launched a long-range rocket Wednesday morning despite
international opposition and growing tensions in the region. The missile
reportedly crashed into the Pacific.South Korea’s president has called an emergency meeting over the
issue. The launch was confirmed by officials at South Korean Defense
Ministry and its Joint Chiefs of Staff.The missile fell into
waters off the Philippines at 10:05 a.m. local time after passing over
Okinawa, the Japanese government said, according to Yonhap news agency.
An official in Seoul told the news agency that the first stage of the
North Korean rocket fell in the Yellow Sea.
"Shortly after the liftoff, Aegis radar system in the Yellow Sea detected the move," a senior South Korean military official said, Yonhap reports.This move comes as a surprise as Pyongyang announced Monday it was extending its launch period for the rocket test by one week to Dec. 29.Earlier, the US Navy had sent two additional warships to North Korea to track and prepare for a possible North Korean rocket launch, bringing the total number of warships surrounding the Communist state to four.The United States and the United Nations have expressed concern that North Korea may be testing its missile technology to see if it could be used to eventually strike the US. This is Pyongyang’s second attempt at such a launch this year – an attempt that the US views as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The UN has banned the secretive Communist nation from conducting any ballistic missile tests.

APTOS, Calif. (KPIX/CNN) - Scientists are investigating why several hundred dead squid have washed ashore along California beaches.The beaches of Santa Cruz County are littered with carcasses of
thousands of Humboldt squid. They've stranded themselves from Aptos to
Watsonville, a span of 12 miles."You just see them essentially killing themselves and it's just
really weird to see," said Hannah Rosen with Hopkins Marine Station.It happened during high tide. Some people actually tried to put them
back in the water, but Rosen says the deepwater creatures swam right
back to shore."They don't see the shore very often, so it might just be that they
don't understand what's going on around them, and they're just trying to
get away and don't realize that if they swim towards the shore, they're
going to run out of water eventually," she said.They're juveniles, both male and female, about a foot and a half
long, weighing roughly three pounds each. They had full stomachs, having
feasted on smaller market squid. A few had also cannibalized each
other, which is normal.Researchers have no idea why this is happening, but they think it's because the squid have eaten toxic algae."It's possible that the squid are ingesting either these neurotoxins
or they're getting it through their food, and that could be causing them
to be disoriented and swim onto the beach," said Rosen.Humboldt squid have not been seen in the Monterey Bay area for a few years.Scientists believe El Nino weather patterns may have drawn them to the cooler waters of northern California.This is the third stranding in six weeks. "It's really an exploratory time for us, so we're learning more about what causes these strandings, and whether or not we should be worried about them or if it's just a natural part of the squid cycle," said Rosen.

"Shortly after the liftoff, Aegis radar system in the Yellow Sea detected the move," a senior South Korean military official said, Yonhap reports.This move comes as a surprise as Pyongyang announced Monday it was extending its launch period for the rocket test by one week to Dec. 29.Earlier, the US Navy had sent two additional warships to North Korea to track and prepare for a possible North Korean rocket launch, bringing the total number of warships surrounding the Communist state to four.The United States and the United Nations have expressed concern that North Korea may be testing its missile technology to see if it could be used to eventually strike the US. This is Pyongyang’s second attempt at such a launch this year – an attempt that the US views as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The UN has banned the secretive Communist nation from conducting any ballistic missile tests.

NORTH Korea today carried out a widely criticised rocket launch,
seen by many in the international community as a disguised ballistic
missile test, the South Korean defence ministry said.The Japanese government said the missile passed over its southern
island chain of Okinawa around 12 minutes after take-off, which was
9.49am local time (11.49am AEDT).Tokyo said it believed parts of
the rocket had fallen into the sea off the Korean peninsula, with

"Friends of Syria" group recognizes opposition coalition

gave full political recognition on Wednesday to the opposition,
reflecting a hardening consensus that the 20-month-old uprising might be
nearing a tipping point.Meeting in the Moroccan city of Marrakech as rebels battled Assad's
troops on the outskirts of his Damascus power base, the "Friends of
Syria" group called on Assad to step aside and warned him against using
chemical weapons.
At the same meeting, the leader of Syria's opposition
coalition called on the Alawite minority to launch a campaign of civil
disobedience against Assad, an Alawite who faces a mainly Sunni Muslim
uprising against his rule.Hours earlier, President Barack Obama
announced that Washington would now recognize the newly formed
coalition of opposition groups as Syria's legitimate representative,
joining France, Britain, Turkey and Gulf states."Participants acknowledge the National Coalition as the
legitimate representative of the Syrian people and the umbrella
organization under which the Syrian opposition are gathering," said a
draft declaration of the Marrakech meeting obtained by Reuters.The gathering brings together many Western and Arab

Although the text made no explicit commitment to arm the rebels, a diplomat following the talks said participants agreed on "the legitimate need of the Syrian people to defend itself against the violent and brutal regime of Bashar al-Assad".Another diplomat said Western powers did not rule out supplying arms to rebel units in the future, but would want assurances about where the weapons would flow - pointing to several atrocities committed by rebel fighters and the presence of radical Islamists in their ranks."No option is ruled out. But there are big issues about the legality of intervening in a civil war. Any support to any group depends on the command control and the discipline on the ground," a Western diplomat at the Marrakech meeting said.France said at the talks it was not ready to supply arms."For now we have decided not to move on this," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters in Morocco. "We shall see in the coming months."Western officials are due to meet commanders of a newly formed rebel military command in Turkey next week.Syria's state news agency SANA said Obama's recognition of the political opposition, which coincided with Washington's designation of the radical Islamist Jabhat al-Nusra group, part of the rebel force against Assad, as a terrorist organization "proves American hypocrisy".Fighting is moving closer to Assad's residence in the centre of Damascus, and early on Wednesday government forces fired artillery and rockets at southwestern suburbs of the capital adjacent to the Mezzeh military airport, activists said.SANA said on Wednesday that "terrorists" detonated two bombs in the Damascus district of Jaramana, killing one person and wounded five, and another two bombs behind the Justice Ministry in Damascus, wounding one person.
In central Syria an attack on a village killed or injured as many as 200 members of Assad's Alawite minority sect, activists said, but it was unclear who was behind the assault.The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels have scored a string of victories against Assad's forces, many of them from his Alawite religious minority. There is little evidence that the government is regaining control, residents say."We send a direct message to the Alawite brethren. The Syria revolution is extending its hand to you, so extend your hand back and start civil disobedience against the regime because it repressed you like it repressed us," said opposition leader Mouaz Alkhatib.Alkhatib, elected last month as leader of the National Coalition for Opposition Forces and the Syrian Revolution, urged Assad's allies Iran and Hezbollah to withdraw their support.The Syrian army is using warplanes and heavy artillery to try to halt further advances by rebels, many of them die-hard Islamists. Opposition leaders say they need heavy weapons to sustain the momentum and change the military equation in a conflict that has killed 40,000 people since March 2011.The fighting has driven hundreds of thousands of Syrians into neighboring countries, and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees said more than half a million were either registered or awaiting registration in the region.The rebels now hold a near continuous arc of territory from the east to the southwest of the capital. With conditions deteriorating, Damascus residents now face power cuts and food shortages as they prepare for winter.Assad's political and armed opponents, dogged by splits and rivalries throughout their battle to end his rule, have established a more unified political opposition and military command, hoping to win international support.Qatar and Saudi Arabia are already arming and financing the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood and other militant groups, while Iran is bankrolling Assad.Brotherhood deputy leader Farouq Tayfour, speaking in Marrakech, said recent military gains by the rebels meant that Assad's end was rapidly approaching."What is happening on the battlefield is very significant," he told Reuters. "The decline of the regime has started.""The rebels are now much closer to the palace. Bashar is under siege. His end will be like Gaddafi's end. Didn't Bashar say, 'I was born in Syria and will die in Syria'? Egypt opposition urges 'No' vote on constitution

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's main opposition alliance called for a "No" vote in the referendum on a disputed constitution rather than a boycott, hours after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's government forged ahead by starting overseas voting in diplomatic missions for expatriates.The opposition's decision did not
dispel the atmosphere of a nation in crisis, deeply polarized over the
referendum that has stoked three weeks of turmoil on the streets. The
opposition still plans more protests and the country's judges are still
on strike over a decree by Morsi,
since rescinded, that placed him above judicial oversight. And if the
referendum passes, there is potential for even greater upheaval.There are also growing concerns about the already flailing economy a
day after Egypt requested a postponement of a $4.8 billion IMF loan.
Morsi suspended a package of tax hikes that had been part of a program
to reduce Egypt's huge budget deficit for fear the measure would add to
political tensions.The opposition said it still may boycott the vote starting in Egypt on Saturday if its conditions are not met.Hamdeen Sabahi, one of the leaders of the opposition National Salvation Front,
said at a news conference the alliance would urge its supporters to
boycott if judges do not oversee the vote and the state does not provide
security at the polls. The country's major judges' union said Tuesday
it would boycott the referendum, abstaining from their traditional role
of oversight at the polls.
"The Front decided to call upon the people to go to the polling
stations and reject the draft by saying 'No,'" said Sabahi, a leftist
politician who finished a close third in the June presidential election
narrowly won by Morsi. "The people will rally at the polls and have a
chance to topple the constitution by saying 'No,'" he said, reading from
a prepared statement.The Islamist-dominated constitution drafting committee rushed through the document in a marathon session last month. Islamists
say its approval will restore political stability and allow the
rebuilding of the institutions of government. They say it contains new
articles banning many of the human rights abuses that were commonplace
under Morsi's ousted predecessor Hosni Mubarak, whose 29-year regime was ousted in a popular uprising nearly two years ago.Liberals, secularists, Christians, and other critics say the draft is
full of obscurely worded clauses that could give clerics a say over
legality of legislation and allow civil rights to be curtailed by
hardline interpretations of Islamic Shariah law. They say the 100-member
constituent assembly tasked to draft the constitution was packed with
Islamists and ultraconservatives who ignored other groups' concerns and
sped the draft through.The nationwide referendum was initially scheduled to take place on
Dec. 15, but in a last minute decree on Tuesday, Morsi ordered the
voting stretched into another round on Dec. 22. Voting must be overseen
by judges but the powerful judges' union voted Tuesday not to supervise
the process, protesting an earlier and now rescinded decree by Morsi
placing him above judicial oversight. Their absence would throw the
legitimacy of the vote into and thus the legitimacy of the constitution
itself.It was not immediately clear whether the judges will now oversee the
voting after the opposition said it would participate in the referendum.
But the judges have all along said their stand is inspired by what they
see as Morsi' assault" on the judiciary and the siege of the nation's
highest court by Islamists loyal to Morsi. The court was widely expected
to disband the constitution writing assembly in a session scheduled for
Dec. 2. The panel rushed the vote on the draft on Nov. 29-30 and Morsi
ordered the referendum on Dec. 1.Zaghloul el-Balshi, head of the referendum's organizing committee,
said on Tuesday that 9,000 judges had agreed to oversee the voting. His
claim could not be independently verified. The total number of polling
stations in Egypt is nearly 13,000, each of which normally requires a
judge. Aides to Morsi said before that judges are only needed to
supervise the 9,000 main stations, while government employees or
university lecturers can fill in at the rest.The start of overseas voting after nearly three weeks of mass
opposition protests showed the determination of Morsi to go forward with
the process despite outrage from the liberal opposition, which contends
it places restrictions on liberties and gives Islamists a big say on
how the country is run.The opposition front had been expected to call for civil
disobedience, such as general strikes, to escalate the recent mass
protests against Morsi. Mass rallies are scheduled for Friday, on the
eve of the vote.The opposition has been considering several options to force Morsi to back down and postpone the vote.Ahmed Khairi, a spokesman for the liberal Free Egyptians party — a
member of the National Salvation Front — said the party had been in
favor of a boycott."There were several points of views, but as long as everybody agreed
on going for 'No,' we changed our position," he said. Other options,
such as more rallies and civil disobedience, remain on the table."The constitution is a decisive battle but not the final one. We will
keep on fighting for our demands and for Egypt to become a country for
all. This will not be the end," he said.Islamists who support the draft constitution, led by Morsi's Muslim
Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Salafis, have been distributing
flyers urging a "Yes" vote along and putting up posters with the same
message. They have been also been using mosques to disseminate their
message.Several hundred Islamists loyal to Morsi have meanwhile been staging a
sit-in outside a media complex known as "media city" on the outskirts
of Cairo. The complex is home to some of the most influential
independent TV networks critical of the president and his Muslim
Brotherhood. The Islamists are threatening to storm the complex.The opposition has been boycotting a "national dialogue" hosted by
the president, saying they don't trust Morsi after he failed to live up
to promises during the election campaign to form a representative
national coalition government and to win a broad consensus before
putting the constitution to a vote.In another twist, Egypt's military withdrew a call for talks with the opposition, one day after proposing it.Military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali
was quoted by the official MENA news agency as saying Defense Minister
Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi decided to postpone Wednesday's meeting because
"the response to the invitation was below expectations." The statement
was not explained further."Lt-Gen. el-Sissi would like to seize this chance and call on all
national and political forces and every segment of the glorious Egyptian
people to shoulder their responsibility toward the nation and the
citizens at this critical and sensitive time," Ali said.That announcement came at the same time the opposition said it was willing to attend the meeting.El-Sissi's call, in the midst of dueling mass protest for and against
the constitution, was seen as a return of the powerful military to the
political scene after Morsi's election ended nearly 17 months of
military rule following Mubarak's February 2011 ouster. It was the
second time this week the generals have addressed the crisis, signaling
their return to the political fray.On Saturday, the military warned of "disastrous consequences" if the crisis is not resolved.The cancellation of the army's meeting was likely made under pressure
from Morsi, who has been adamant since he took office that the military
must stick to its core mission, such as protecting borders. Although
Morsi appointed army chief el-Sissi, he is not seen as tightly
controlled by the president."The military is boiling. The military doesn't live in isolation from
the street and what is happening there. We have judges on strike, a
constitutional court under siege and a media city under siege," said
retired army general and military analyst Hossam Sweilam."We have large sectors of Egyptians rejecting the referendum and we
have so many ways to postpone it. But the stubborn leadership is
insisting on going forward with the process. All this is reflected on
the armed forces.""The patience of the officers is not guaranteed to remain the same
forever," said Sweilam, who is widely thought to be close to the
military.
The vote for half a million
eligible expatriates overseas could give hints at which direction the
referendum is going. Egyptian expatriates in the Gulf are known to lean
toward Islamists
while others in Europe, North America and Australia, among them a large
number of Christian migrants, lean more toward liberals.
In the Egyptian embassy in Sanaa,
Yemen, a handful of voters showed up after the vote started at 8:00
a.m. local time. Mohammed Abdullah, a physician, said he voted yes
because he wants stability, and any changes could be made later. "We can
make whatever amendments we want but we have to get through this and
return to normalcy," he said.The Middle East News Agency says that Egyptian expatriates have up
until Saturday to cast ballots in 150 diplomatic missions worldwide.Two months after passing the
referendum, the country is scheduled to have new parliamentary
elections. A parliament elected after the uprising was disbanded after
courts ruled the elections law was unconstitutional.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI hit the 1 million Twitter follower mark on Wednesday as he sent his first tweet from his new account, blessing his online fans and urging them to listen to Christ.In perhaps the most drawn out Twitter launch ever, the 85-year-old Benedict
tapped the screen of a tablet brought to him at the end of his general
audience after the equivalent of a papal drum roll by an announcer who
intoned: "And now the pope will tweet!""Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter.
Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my
heart," the inaugural tweet read.
But about an hour later, a Vatican official tweeted a question that had been sent to the pope in the long run-up to the launch, asking his advice about how to be more faithful in daily life. "By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need," the responding tweet read.Later still, a third tweet, responding to a question about how faith can be lived in a world without hope: "We can be certain that a believer is never alone. God is the solid rock upon which we build our lives and his love is always faithful," it said.The Vatican has insisted that the words are Benedict's alone, culled from his speeches, homilies or catechism lessons.As incongruous as it may seem for Benedict to be on Twitter, Vatican officials have stressed that he is merely walking in the footsteps of his predecessors in using the latest in communications technology to spread the faith.Pope Pius XI, for example, caused a similar stir when he launched Vatican Radio some 80 years ago to bring the pope's message on radio waves around the globe. The Vatican also has its own newspaper, television service and maintains dedicated YouTube channels and an Internet news portal.
At around the same time the message was sent, the number of followers
of Benedict's (at)Pontifex accounts surpassed the 1 million mark, with
all eight languages of the pope's account combined.While the (at)Pontifex English account remains the most popular,
nearing 800,000 followers, the pope is tweeting simultaneously in
Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Polish and Arabic. Each
language has its own handle, though they're all the pope's account:

the subject of intense curiosity — as well as merciless jokes, criticism

Internet, in newspapers, in so many forms of expression," the Rev.

Vatican Radio this week. "They form part of ordinary communication."Benedict actually sent his first tweet over a year ago, using a
generic Vatican account to launch the Holy See's news information
portal. Someone in his name tweeted daily during Lent, part of the
Vatican's efforts to increase the church presence in social media.A personal Twitter account for Benedict has been the subject of
speculation ever since the Vatican's senior communications official said
in February the idea was gaining traction.Vatican officials have acknowledged the pope won't actually type the
messages and that someone in the Vatican's secretariat of state will
write them on his behalf. And so it happened on Wednesday: Benedict just
