Israel's Netanyahu: World has double standards

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's prime minister on Monday accused the international community of "deafening silence" in response to recent vows by the head of the Hamas militant group to fight on until the Jewish state is destroyed, and appeared unmoved by the gathering storm of global condemnation of his government's plans to continue settling the West Bank.Benjamin Netanyahu's tough words were likely to deepen the rift between Israel and some of its closest allies, particularly in Europe, that has emerged since the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of Palestinian independence last month. In a sign of the tense relations, European Union foreign ministers were gathered in Brussels to condemn new settlement construction that Netanyahu has authorized in response to the U.N. decision.Speaking to foreign reporters, Netanyahu accused the international community of having double standards, condemning not-yet-built settlements in the West Bank while standing quiet during a historic visit to the Gaza Strip by Hamas' exiled leader, Khaled Mashaal.Making his first trip to the Hamas-ruled territory over the weekend, Mashaal delivered a series of speeches to throngs of supporters vowing to wipe Israel off the map. The visit underscored Hamas' rising clout and regional acceptance since its eight-day conflict with Israel last month.
Netanyahu also directed his ire at Hamas' rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, for not speaking out.
"This weekend the leader of Hamas, sitting next to the Hamas leader of Gaza, a man who praised Osama Bin Laden, this weekend openly called for the destruction of Israel. Where was the outrage? Where were the U.N. resolutions? Where was President Abbas?" Netanyahu said."Why weren't Palestinian diplomats summoned to European and other capitals to explain why the PA president not only refused to condemn this but actually declared his intention to unite with Hamas. There was nothing, there was silence and it was deafening silence," he added.Netanyahu has long complained that the world unfairly singles out Israel for criticism. In Monday's address, he accused the United Nations of passing an unbalanced resolution that supported Palestinian independence but did not address Israeli security concerns. The U.N. resolution recognized a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Just eight countries sided with Israel in opposing the vote.Although it does not end Israel's occupation of the West Bank and east Jerusalem, the resolution gave an international endorsement to the Palestinian position on the borders between Israel and a future Palestine. It also amounted to a broad condemnation of Israeli settlements in the two areas. Israel withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005.Netanyahu, who rejects a return to Israel's 1967 lines, responded to the U.N. resolution with plans to build thousands of new homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The most contentious plan is to develop a corridor linking east Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim, one of the largest Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The Palestinians say this project, known as E1, would deal a death blow to any hopes for peace since it would separate the West Bank from east Jerusalem, their hoped-for capital, and drive a deep wedge between the northern and southern parts of the West Bank by creating a string of settlements jutting nearly halfway across the West Bank.Israeli officials say construction on the E1 project is years away. But the country has come under fierce criticism by its closest allies, the U.S. and major countries in Western Europe.
Last week, a string of Israeli ambassadors were summoned for official reprimand in European capitals, and on Monday, EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to discuss a response to the plan.Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, said the Israeli construction plans have caused "extreme concern" in the 27-nation EU. "What the Israelis did on E1 has shifted opinions in Europe," Bildt said as he arrived for the meeting. "I don't think the Israelis are aware of this."The Palestinians say they turned to the U.N. in frustration after a four-year freeze in peace efforts under Netanyahu. The Palestinians say they will not resume talks unless Netanyahu halts settlement construction and accepts the 1967 lines as the basis for talks.Netanyahu played down the international criticism and blamed the Palestinians for the impasse. He noted that a 10-month partial settlement freeze he imposed in 2010 had failed to restart negotiations."The reason why the Palestinians avoided negotiations for the past four years is a very simple one. They avoided negotiations because they were willing to take concessions from Israel but they were not prepared to make concessions to Israel," he said.Netanyahu said that negotiations should resume without any conditions, and even held out the possibility of abandoning the E1 plan."We remain committed and this is what we prefer, a bilateral negotiation without preconditions in which all these questions can be raised, that is our preference and I hope the Palestinian Authority will go that route because it is better for them and it is better for us," he said.
While Netanyahu's term has been characterized by tensions with Israel's allies, he remains popular at home and appears set to win a new term as head of a hard-line coalition in parliamentary elections next month.
Netanyahu told the audience he had made great gains during his term. He claimed he had helped draw attention to Iran's suspect nuclear program, beefed up Israel's cybersecurity and missile defenses, and fortified Israel's southern border with Egypt to prevent militant attacks and waves of African migrants from entering the country.Yet in a moment of candor, he signaled that his sometimes rocky relations with President Barack Obama could have been handled better. "Who doesn't have regrets?"___Ian Deitch contributed to this report from Jerusalem.

Israeli leader mocks EU 'dismay'

Today @ 14:25 DEC 11,12 By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - Israeli leader Bejamin Netanyahu has mocked EU foreign ministers' "dismay" over his plan to split Palestine in three and to take away its capital. The right-wing politician on Monday (10 December) told press in Jerusalem that EU ministers were talking nonsense when they said that creating 3,000 new settler homes in the so-called E1 district is a huge threat to peace."I don't understand how people say that a Palestinian state cannot exist if Maalah Adumim is connected to Jerusalem ... These are the same people who say that you'll have a Palestinian state between Gaza and the West Bank, and they're divided by 60-70km," he said."That's fine, that doesn't preclude a Palestinian state in their minds but the fact that Maaleh Adumim can be connected to Jerusalem by a corridor of 2-3km, [the EU says] that somehow prevents a Palestinian state. That's not true. It's simply false," he noted."If you repeat a falsehood endlessly, it assumes the cache of truth," he added. The names E1 and Mallah Adumin are unfamiliar to average Europeans who have not studied the map of the Arab-Israeli conflict.Mallah Adumin is one of the existing Israeli settlements which together form a near-complete ring around East Jerusalem. E1 is the last gap in the ring - a patch of barren hills inhabited by a few Bedouin tribesmen. If Netanyahu builds on E1 it will seal off East Jerusalem and split the West Bank in half.It means that the future Palestinian state would lose its ancient and holy capital. The 290,000-or-so Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem would become stateless people who reside in Israel but without Israeli citizenship. It also means the rest of Palestine would be split into three cantons. One of them would be the Gaza strip on the Mediterranean coast. The other two would be the north West Bank and the south West Bank. The only ways to get from the main economic centre of Ramallah in the north to Bethlehem in the south would be via a 16-metre-wide Israeli-controlled road running through the Israeli ring, or by driving for several hours on an as-yet-unbuilt road through the Judaean desert to the east of the ring. The EU ministers in their communique on Monday said they are "deeply dismayed" by the idea because it "would seriously undermine the prospects of a negotiated resolution of the conflict by jeopardizing the possibility of a contiguous and viable Palestinian state and of Jerusalem as the future capital of two states."For their part, two Israeli experts agreed that it is Netanyahu who is talking nonsense.
"If you tell me there can be an agreement between Israel and Palestine without Jerusalem, I'll ask: 'What have you been smoking?'," Danny Seideman, a lawyer who set up the Israeli-based NGO,Terrestrial Jerusalem, told EUobserver."If he says that he can make peace like this, then he is telling the Israeli public lies," Hagit Ofran, a director in the Israeli-based NGO Peace Now, said. The EU ministers also threatened to "act accordingly" if Netanyahu does not back down, highlighting Israeli "settlement products" as an area for potential punitive action. For Seideman, the threat of Israel's increasing international isolation pales into insignficance compared to the threat of war with Palestine, however. The EU statement also criticised Hamas - a Palestinian militant group which holds sway in Gaza - after its leader Khaled Meshaal last weekend called for the destruction of Israel at a rally attended by over 200,000 people."The EU finds inflammatory statements by Hamas leaders that deny Israel's right to exist unacceptable," it said. But EU diplomats know all too well that Netanyahu's E1 plan will help to make Hamas into the dominant political force in the West Bank as well as Gaza by making its counterpart, the Fatah party - which has staked its reputation on diplomacy - look stupid. In the last exchange of fire in November, Hamas rockets hit the outskirts of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. In the last war with Hamas' ally Hezbollah in neighbouring Lebanon in 2006, over 160 Israeli citizens lost their lives. In the last intifada, or mass Palestinian uprising, which ended in 2005, over 1,000 Israeli citizens were killed. In the meantime, Israel's southern neighbour, Egypt, has fallen under the control of the Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood. Its eastern neighbour, Jordan, has become dangerously unstable. Its other neighbour, Syria, has been penetrated by jihadist warlords and its main regional enemy, Iran, is believed by some Western intelligence experts to already have a nuclear bomb."This is not a drill. This is not a psychodrama. This is a geopolitical drama of the highest order. Netanyahu is not posturing. He is thrusting forward to what he believes is the best settlement for Israel's final borders," Seideman told this website.
"The Israeli public is sipping cappucinos on the edge of a volcano," he added.

UN Hosts 'One-Palestine State' Art Exhibit

The UN delivers a “One Arab State Solution” through an art exhibit that shows all of Israel as Palestine, mirroring Mahmoud Abbas’ “peace process map.”The exhibit is displayed at the public entrance of the United Nations, where the Palestinian Authority chairman two weeks ago delivered a speech before the General Assembly vote that granted the PA Non-Member Observer status. The Breitbart website noted that the top of the cover page of his speech featured a logo that promotes all of Israel as a future state of Arab Palestine.Publicly, Abbas has stated he wants “negotiations” with Israel that would recognize the Palestinian Authority based on the United Nations Temporary Armistice Lines drawn up in 1949 and erased with the Six-Day War in 1967.He also insists on Israel’s accepting approximately 5 million foreign Arabs into the country, which would render an Israel a de facto Arab country.Although the Palestinian Authority officially promotes a “two-state solution,” the Palestinian Authority’s UN representative Riyadh Mansour followed the vote by opening the art exhibit entitled “Palestine – Memories Dreams Perseverance.” The titles of the art bear titles such as, “Homeless, “Delirious in Exile” and “to Jerusalem We Travel.” At worst, it eliminates Israel; at best, it is an attempt to claim that Israel was given Palestinian land even if there is a settlement, despite the fact that there was no such nation when Israel was formed..One display shows all of the names of Arab terrorist organizations in the shape of the Land of Israel.

Hamas rejects the validity of UN resolution on a Palestinian state - THE JERUSALEM POST

  • The November 2012 UN resolution that granted observer status to Palestine as a non-member state is in effect void ab-initio due to Abbas' lack of authority to represent all Palestinians and Hamas' rejection of the fundamentals of the resolution.
When Hams leaders publicly reject its basic terms, one need not be a lawyer to question the validity of the November 29 UN resolution A/67/L.28 that granted observer status to Palestine as a non-member state, especially since Hamas has emerged as the dominant force in the divided Palestinian leadership as reported in the NY Times on November 24. The report added
"In a sermonlike speech laced with Koranic verses, the Hamas prime minister, Ismail Haniya, promised on Thursday [Nov 22] to establish an independent state on all Palestine land, foreboding words from the leader of an organization whose charter prophesies Israel’s elimination. On Saturday, one of his top deputies, Mahmoud Zahar, added that Hamas would continue getting arms in preparation for the next battle and called on Arab and Muslim nations to provide Gaza with money and weapons".Soon after beginning his celebrated December visit to Gaza, Hamas chief, Khaled Mashal, with Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniya at his side, publicly rejected the fundamental clause 4 of the resolution which refers to a State of Palestine living side by side in peace and security with Israel on the basis of the pre-1967 borders. In a speech described as fiery by the BBC, Mashal categorically rejected and contradicted the basis of the UN resolution. He told a cheering crowd that Palestinians will not cede any part of their land and that there is no legitimacy for Israel.Emphasizing Hamas' objective of ruling over all of Israel from the Jordan to the sea, he was quoted by Ma'an News Agency as telling the cheering crowds."Today is Gaza. Tomorrow will be Ramallah and after that Jerusalem, then Haifa and Jaffa,"
In Times of Israel he was quoted as saying
We are not giving up any inch of Palestine. It will remain Islamic and Arab for us and nobody else.  Jihad and armed resistance is the only way..from the sea to the river, from north to south, we will not give up any part of Palestine — it is our country, our right and our homeland"In effect Hamas, represented by Mashal and Haniya confirm their adherence to the Hamas Charter which declares there is absolutely no room for peaceful negotiation and that so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement.Mashal, is an influential figure who was listed by New Statesman as 18th in the list of the "World's 50 Most Influential Figures in 2010" and his claim that Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza (WBG) as well as in Israel are all one, invalidates President Abbas' purported authority to propose the resolution, as he did, on behalf of all Palestinians. Not only Mashal but Haniya too, claim to speak for and represent all the Palestinian people.
According to Al Arabiya, Haniya declared that he speaks as leader of all Palestinians when he told a crowd of 30,000 Iranians in February that Hamas will never recognize Israel.Closer examination indicates that in his November 2012 resolution in addition to 1967 lines, Abbas also referred obliquely to the 1947 partition lines. Clause 3 of the 2012 resolution asks the Security Council to consider favorably the September 2011 application, which contains the following wording "This application for membership is being submitted on the Palestinian people's natural legal and historic rights and based on UN GA resolution 181 (II) of 29 November 1947..." Ma'an News Agency of Sept 16, 2011 reported that Hamas and Islamic Jihad dismissed President Mahmoud Abbas’ 2011 UN membership initiative and criticized a speech in which he expressed hope that peace talks would resume soon. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said Hamas would play no part in an initiative premised on recognizing Israel.
According to  a Debka file Special Report of September 16, 2011, Abbas stressed in a speech in Ramallah that while citing the 1967 border in his intended application to UN Security Council the following week for recognition of Palestinian statehood, Israel's "occupation" would not end the next day and much more remained to be done because the 1967 lines do not define the true borders any more than the roadblocks and the settlements. He said, the real Palestinian borders were laid down in 1947 by the UN and that all other areas are "occupied territory" which the Palestinians intend to claim.
In view of the above publicized intentions of  Palestinian leaders to annihilate Israel there is tragic irony in the claim that Palestine is a peace loving nation as contained in the declaration submitted with the September 2011 application for membership, signed by the President Abbas as reproduced below.

It is evident that in proposing the above motion to the General Assembly of the UN, President Abbas purported to do so as the "sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people" in his capacity as president of the PLO, whereas in truth and fact a substantial proportion of the Palestinian people reject his leadership. They are not only represented by other leaders they also categorically reject the very fundamentals of the resolution that was submitted purportedly  on their behalf.
In the circumstances, resolution A/67/L.28 is void ab-inito and should accordingly be rescinded in the interests of justice and the status of the UN.

Banking union: The German way or no way

10.12.12 @ 15:57 By Valentina Pop
BERLIN - A deal on the planned single supervisor for banks in the eurozone will come about only if it meets German demands limiting the European Central Bank's (ECB) responsibility.EU ambassadors in Brussels were set to meet Monday evening (10 December) for what diplomats said would most likely be an "all-nighter" in a last attempt to thrash out a compromise on the banking supervisor before a gathering of finance ministers on Wednesday dedicated to the topic. At the core of the dispute is Germany's view that the ECB should not be made responsible for overseeing all 6,200 banks in the eurozone, as the EU commission, France and the ECB are advocating for, but rather for national supervisors to bear the responsibility for things going wrong in the smaller banks and for the ECB overseeing just the lager ones.Non-eurozone countries have also raised concerns about voting rights and a level playing field between banks inside and outside the new supervision scheme. But according to an EU source, "if Germany agrees, others like Poland, will follow."Initially, the idea of having a single supervisor came from no other than German Chancellor Angela Merkel.Back in June, when Spain and Italy were struggling with sky-high borrowing costs and pressuring Merkel to agree for the eurozone bailout fund to be used for bank bailouts without governments having to pile on more debt, she agreed, but only if banks would first be put under the supervision of the ECB.The existing European Banking Authority (EBA) - set up in the aftermath of the financial crisis and supposedly doing the same thing for banks in all 27 EU countries - proved to be inefficient, Merkel said, as it had failed to see the Spanish banking problems in time and gave them a clean bill of health in its so-called stress tests.Yet the powers of the London-based EBA were watered down by member states, so that it cannot run its own audits to check whether what national supervisors are reporting, for instance about Spanish banks, is actually true. That same debate seems to be doing the rounds this time. The ECB should be fitted with real auditing powers, says Germany. But it also argues that no single supervisor can possibly be put in charge of 6,200 banks from Estonia to Portugal and from Ireland to Greece. Instead, national supervisors should still bear the responsibility for smaller ones, with only the large ones under direct ECB control.A draft compromise prepared by the Cypriot EU presidency on Friday placed banks with assets worth more than €30 billion and doing cross-border activities under ECB supervision, all the rest staying under day-to-day national supervision. But the ultimate responsibility would still lie with the ECB.
German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Sunday indicated willingness to achieve a compromise "before Christmas" and to work on the actual setting up of the new body in 2013, but insisted for the ECB not to be made responsible for things it cannot oversee.Spiegel magazine meanwhile reported that a compromise could also envisage placing the new supervisory body in Paris, to clearly underline the separation of activities within the Frankfurt-based ECB.EU diplomats told this website the headquarters issue is the "least of our problems," even though Germany prefers for the supervisor to be "in the proximity" of the ECB in Frankfurt.Germany's central bank chief Jens Weidmann - also based in Frankfurt - has meanwhile told Welt am Sonntag that the legal base finance ministers and the European Parliament are working on is not right and an EU treaty change would be the "legally clean solution" for the ECB to be entrusted with all these new powers.EU treaty change means delaying the process for at least a few years.
The German government, however, maintains that the current legal base is fine and no treaty change is needed. But the bigger the ECB powers and the less democratic accountability the new set-up has, the more difficult it will be for the German parliament to approve the deal, Schaeuble has warned.

Isolated Philippine typhoon victims running out of food

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Isolated communities in the Philippines including hill tribes are facing hunger a week after a typhoon struck, and with roads blocked, supplies will have to be dropped by air, authorities said on Tuesday.Typhoon Bopha killed 714 people and caused crop damage worth 10.3 billion pesos ($250 million) when it hit on Tuesday last week. Nearly 900 people are unaccounted for and about 2,000 were injured, the national disaster agency said. The most intense storm to hit the disaster-prone Philippines this year wiped out communities near the coast in the southern provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. But villages inland were also hard hit by floods and landslides and many are cut off. The Philippines has asked for help from allies and the private sector to get help in by air."Their food is fast dwindling, their roads are blocked by fallen trees and boulders and it will not be long before everyone in these upland villages will go hungry," Manggob Masinaring, a member of a mountain tribe and a volunteer relief worker, told reporters.Compounding the problem was that the source of water for many villages had been blocked or polluted by mud and debris."The streams, which are their only source of water, are too murky for drinking," Masinaring said.International agencies including the Red Cross and World Food Programme have appealed for nearly $100 million for food and shelter for 5.4 million people affected by the typhoon. Nearly 400,000 people lost their homes and farms.Major-General Ariel Bernardo, the army division commander in the south, said food and other supplies would have to be dropped by helicopter to the most isolated communities, including hill tribes, who had yet to be reached.Stephen Anderson, country director for the World Food Programme in the Philippines, said help had to be delivered fast to communities that had lost everything -- homes, crops and all "productive assets"."These people are extremely vulnerable ... it's a race against time," Anderson told Reuters. The Philippines had asked the United States if it could de help with its ships, planes and helicopters, said Benito Ramos, executive director of the national disaster agency. Britain had offered to send two heavy-lift helicopters, he said.Private companies and individuals were also being asked to help with their helicopters.About 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year, often causing death and destruction. Almost exactly a year ago, typhoon Washi killed nearly 1,500 people in Mindanao, but most storms make landfall further north. Heavy snow keeps Balkans in deep freeze

PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) — Blizzards blocked roads, stranded villages, disrupted power supplies and shut down an airport in the Balkans on Tuesday, the fourth straight day of tough winter weather in the region of southeastern Europe. In one of the worst hit areas, snowdrifts and avalanches blocked roads in hilly northern Montenegro, where about a meter (3 feet) of snow fell overnight, officials said.Across the border in southwestern Serbia, heavy snowfall blocked roads to more than a dozen villages, with some left without electricity and schools being closed for the rest of the week, officials said."We have got heavy machinery out and we are doing all we can," said emergency official Samir Bakic. "The wind is making the effort more difficult."At least nine deaths across the region have been blamed on the snow and deep freeze, with temperatures as low as -15 Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit).Elsewhere in Serbia, where snow began to fall Saturday, officials said road crews were still struggling to even clear the central squares of some cities.
Predrag Maric, Serbia's top emergency official, apologized on Tuesday for failing to clear roads over the weekend, when hundreds of people were stranded in buses and cars. The milder climates of Montenegro's capital, Podgorica, and the nation's Adriatic coast usually escape tough winter weather, but snow is blanketing Podgorica, too, and closed its airport. In Bosnia, some areas were left without electricity.
In Croatia, doctors warned the elderly and sick to stay indoors as hospitals reported dozens of cases of broken limbs from falls on the ice and snow.____Jovana Gec contributed to this report from Serbia, and Aida Cerkez from Bosnia.

IDF to begin giving its medics chemical weapons antidote

Amid growing concern over Syrian nerve gas, the army acquires tens of thousands of doses of diazepam

December 11, 2012, 2:56 pm 0-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The IDF has acquired tens of thousands of doses of a drug used to combat nerve agent chemical poisoning and will distribute them to all combat medics in the coming months, according to a report in the new issue of the army’s Bamahane weekly magazine. The drug, diazepam, is an anti-convulsant, halting seizures caused by nerve agents such as VX and sarin. Until now, the IDF supplied all medics with atropine, a drug that counters attacks on the respiratory system, but diazepam, which protects the central nervous system, was available only in intravenous form and was distributed only to rear echelon battalion medical centers.“Now the medics receive auto injectors, enabling treatment half an hour to an hour earlier than before, and also enabling treatment to 10 times more people,” the head of nonconventional warfare medicine in the IDF’s medical corps, Lt. Col. Dr. Micah Ksirer, told this week Bamahane. The report comes amid widespread international concern regarding the stockpiles of chemical weapons belonging to the teetering government in Syria.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last week that “an increasingly desperate Assad regime” could either try to use chemical weapons against its own people or “lose control of them to one of the many groups that are now operating within Syria.”The latter option, particularly the proliferation of the weapons to Hezbollah, is “a clear casus belli” for Israel, according to Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman.Key Israeli officials, largely mum on the threat of internal use, have expressed doubt that Assad would use the weapons against Israel. “We see no sign that this weaponry is being pointed at us,” Moshe Ya’alon, minister of strategic affairs and a former IDF chief of staff, told Army Radio earlier this week. “Syria has been armed for the last decades with chemical missiles and weapons, but our deterrent factor is stable and the proof is that they haven’t used them against us yet.”Diazepam and atropine are carried by all US combat troops operating in areas where there is a reasonable threat from chemical weapons. Each soldier carries a kit and is expected to self-administer the drugs or, in the case of diazepam, to administer it to a friend in need.“Shortening the duration [prior to] treatment can save the injured from brain damage and death,” said Ksirer.IDF medics will begin receiving treatment on how and when to administer the new drug as part of their intensive 13-week combat medic course. The IDF Spokesperson’s Office added that the army “constantly reevaluates the medical gear necessary to provide medical care for soldiers in the battlefield. Military medics must be prepared for every eventuality; the gear that they carry reflects this principle.”

Liberman calls for Israeli troops to respond with lethal fire when attacked by PA police

Foreign minister also compares Europe’s silence on Mashaal’s call for jihad against Israel to its inaction during Holocaust

December 11, 2012, 9:50 am 8-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israeli soldiers should respond with lethal force to attempts by Palestinian policemen to harm them, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Tuesday.Liberman also compared international silence on threats from Gazan terror group Hamas to Europe’s inaction before and during the Holocaust. His comments were the harshest response thus far to a number of incidents in the West Bank last week that saw IDF troops forced to retreat from Palestinian protesters. In Hebron on Thursday, troops were caught in a melee with Palestinian police and some 250 other protesters, with one soldier suffering injuries after being punched in the face by a member of the Palestinian security forces.“It is unacceptable that Palestinian policemen slap and punch soldiers and remain alive,” Liberman told Israel Radio. ”The current IDF policy doesn’t produce calm, on the contrary, it just fans the flames. When a soldier is surrounded by an angry mob and being beaten Palestinian policemen, it is a provocation. The government and the IDF’s top brass must support the soldiers.”The foreign minister also lashed out at the European Union for condemning Israel over plans to expand Jewish settlements beyond the Green Line, contrasted by its silence in light of Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal’s calls to destroy Israel.Liberman paralleled Europe’s failure to condemn Mashaal for his statements to European silence in the face of the Nazis’ campaign to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust. He added that the international community should be distancing itself from PA President Mahmoud Abbas over his unity overtures with Hamas.“Europe is ignoring calls to destroy Israel, just as they knew what was happening to the Jews in the 1940s and didn’t exactly do anything about it,” Liberman said. The foreign minister added that by pandering to terrorists, Europe was shooting itself in the foot. “Whoever sacrifices the Jews and Israel today, must understand that they’re next,” he said.Liberman’s statements echoed those of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who slammed the international community on Monday for its “deafening silence,” following Mashaal’s speech in Gaza, in which the Hamas leader said the Palestinians would “not give up an inch of Palestine,” and that “Jihad and armed resistance are the only way.”“This weekend, the leaders of Hamas openly called for the destruction of Israel. Where was the outrage? Where were the UN resolutions? Where was President Abbas?” Netanyahu asked during a Hanukkah reception for the foreign press. “Why weren’t Palestinian diplomats summoned in European and other capitals to explain why the PA president not only refused to condemn this, but actually declared his intention to unite with Hamas?”Liberman’s sharp words generated immediate responses from Israel’s left-wing parties. Labor MK Isaac Herzog accused the government of strengthening Hamas and weakening Abbas, thus wrecking Israel’s best chance for peace.
Meretz chairwoman Zahava Gal-on called Liberman’s Holocaust comparison “despicable,” and said that Netanyahu and Liberman were leading Israel deeper and deeper into International isolation.Hatnua MK Yoel Hasson also slammed Liberman’s comments, which he called “scandalous.”“It’s a dangerous populist move intended to prop up the far right at the expense of Israel’s good and important ties with its friends,” he said in a statement.

Syrian rebels battle army near Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels clashed with forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad near Damascus airport on Tuesday, battling for the capital's outskirts after 20 months of conflict which the United Nations said has driven half a million people from the country.Fighting near the airport, 20 km (12 miles) south-east of Damascus city center, is part of a broader confrontation between Assad's forces and rebels who hold a near continuous arc of territory from the east to the southwest of Assad's power base."There were very heavy clashes since yesterday in the town of Haran, on the eastern side of the airport, and there has been intermittent fighting in the Aqraba area by the airport," said rebel spokesman Mussab Abu Qitada."The rebels are trying to maintain an encirclement of the airport. They are also still surrounding the Aqraba air base, on the international airport road," he said by Skype from Damascus. The center of the capital, shielded for months from the violence which has killed 40,000 people since March 2011, echoed to the sound of shelling from Monday evening, residents said. The shelling appeared to be directed from the Qasioun mountain range, overlooking northern Damascus, towards the rebellious southern suburbs. The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels have made military gains against the forces still loyal to Assad, many of them from Syria's Alawite religious minority. The rebels have seized military bases across the country in the last month and are starting to encircle the capital, where power cuts and food shortages are hurting residents bracing for winter.
"We are barely surviving," said a woman in the Midan district who would only identify herself as Umm Ahmed. She said she queued in vain from 6 a.m. until midday at bakeries which ran out of bread before she could buy any at the normal price, leaving her looking for supplies at much inflated rates."If I want to buy it on the street, the black market price is 150 lira (about $2) - three times the cost," she said. "We are living without electricity and water, and the food is very expensive."Central Damascus has been suffering up to 12 hours of power cuts a day, residents say. Movement around the city, peppered with security checkpoints, is increasingly difficult and soldiers, security forces and local vigilantes are everywhere.
HALF A MILLION REFUGEES
The conflict started with street protests inspired by uprisings across the Arab world. Demonstrations were met with gunfire by Assad's forces and spiraled into the most protracted and destructive battle of the Arab uprisings. The fighting has driven hundreds of thousands of Syrians into neighboring countries and the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said on Tuesday more than half a million were either registered or awaiting registration in the region.Lebanon is now host to 154,387 registered Syrian refugees, Jordan has 142,664, Turkey 136,319, Iraq 65,449 and North Africa 11,740, UNHCR said in a statement issued in Geneva. In addition, there are more than 1.5 million Syrians who fled violence in their homes and are displaced in safer areas within the country.Large numbers of Syrians have also crossed into neighboring countries but have not yet come forward to register for refugee status and assistance, it said. These include about 100,000 in Jordan, 70,000 each in both Turkey and Egypt and tens of thousands in Lebanon, it said, citing government estimates.Assad's political and armed opponents, dogged by splits and rivalries throughout their battle to end his family's 42-year rule, have established a more unified political opposition and military command, hoping to win international recognition and stronger support on the battlefield.Abu Moaz al-Agha, a leader and spokesman of the powerful Ansar al-Islam Gathering which includes many Islamist rebel brigades, said the new, Islamist-dominated military command elected in Turkey at the weekend deserved more foreign backing.
"What we need now is the heavy weapons and we expect to get them after the formation of this. The anti-armour and anti-aircraft weapons are what we are expecting," he told Reuters by Skype from Turkey before heading on a trip to the Gulf."The Qataris and the Saudis gave us positive promises. We will see what will happen," he said, adding that officials from Western countries, who also attended the meeting in Turkey, had not mentioned arming the rebels but talked about "sending aid".The new political opposition coalition, formed in Qatar last month, will meet officials from countries mostly opposed to Assad in Morocco on Wednesday, hoping for a clear recognition as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people.France, Britain, Turkey and the Gulf states have already granted the formal recognition. The European Union, in a meeting on Monday, moved a step closer towards recognition and the United States has suggested it could also endorse the coalition.(Additional reporting by Erika Solomon and Mariam Karouny in Beirut; Editing by Alastair Macdonald)

Israel is the farthest our missiles need to reach, Iran’s air force commander says

Statement follows report casting doubt on Tehran’s intercontinental missile capabilities

Updated: December 11, 2012, 11:39 am 5-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Iran’s air force commander said Tuesday that the distance between Iran and Israel is the maximum range that Tehran requires its missiles fly. Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh made the statement in response to a US intelligence report revealed last week that claimed Tehran is no longer on track to achieve an intercontinental missile by 2015.“We don’t need missiles with more than a 2,000-kilometer range, even though have the technology to build them,” Hajizadeh told reporters. “Israel is our longest-range target.”
The US report, penned by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, cast doubt on a view long held by US intelligence agencies that Iran could test-fly an intercontinental ballistic missile by 2015 if it receives “sufficient foreign assistance.”According to the report, Iran is not receiving as much help as would likely be necessary, notably from China or Russia, to reach that goal.It is also increasingly tough for Tehran to obtain certain critical components and materials because of international sanctions related to its disputed nuclear program, the 66-page report stated.

US Sends Muslim Brotherhood’s Morsi 20 F-16 Warplanes

Egypt’s unstable Muslim Brotherhood regime, voted into power on an anti-US and anti-Israel platform, is to receive 20 F-16 fighter jets.

Egypt’s increasingly unstable Muslim Brotherhood regime, voted into power on an anti-US and anti-Israel platform, is about to receive 20 F-16 fighters jets despite calls to suspend arms sales to Cairo, Fox News reported Tuesday. The jets were ordered by deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and the Muslim Brotherhood is about to take over the inheritance.Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, swept into power earlier this year on an Islamic campaign that promised reforms, has turned the Arab Spring revolution on its end by trying to usurp power. He has deployed armed soldiers and police to quell angry riots that have raised fears of a repeat of the violent suppression of anti-Mubarak protesters nearly two years ago.
Despite the instability, the United States is going ahead with the delivery of the F-16 jets, part of a two-year-old order for the planes. The first four jets are to be delivered January 22,  according to a source at the Texas air base where the planes are being tested. The date, by coincidence, is the same day that Israelis will vote for the next Knesset.Fox noted that Egypt already has 200 F-16 warplanes and quoted  Malou Innocent, a foreign policy analyst at the Cato Institute, as saying that the timing of the deliveries is more than questionable, but not because of the Israeli elections.“Should an overreaction [by Egypt] spiral into a broader conflict between Egypt and Israel, such a scenario would put U.S. officials in an embarrassing position of having supplied massive amounts of military hardware … to both belligerents,” he said.
“Given Washington's fiscal woes, American taxpayers should no longer be Egypt’s major arms supplier.”
Morsi has backed off his attempt to assume dictatorial powers, but he is trying to win approval of a new constitution that would place Islamic Sharia law in a more prominent place in Egypt."The Morsi-led Muslim Brotherhood government has not proven to be a partner for democracy as they had promised, given the recent attempted power grab," a senior Republican congressional aide told FoxNews.com.Florida Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, recently said. “The Obama administration wants to simply throw money at an Egyptian government that the president cannot even clearly state is an ally of the United States.”The order for the Lockheed-Martin planes is another win for the American military-industrial complex."This is a great day for Lockheed Martin and a testament to the enduring partnership and commitment we have made to the government of Egypt," said John Larson, vice president, Lockheed Martin F-16 programs.
Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Wesley Miller explained to Fox, "The U.S.-Egypt defense relationship has served as the cornerstone of our broader strategic partnership for over thirty years. The delivery of the first set of F-16s in January 2013 reflects the U.S. commitment to supporting the Egyptian military's modernization efforts.  Egyptian acquisition of F-16s will increase our militaries' interoperability, and enhance Egypt's capacity to contribute to regional mission sets."President Barack Obama had distanced himself from the Muslim Brotherhood until it became clear that it was a driving force following the fall of Mubarak. In a radical shift of foreign policy, Obama’s advisors, some of whom support a more liberal policy towards Hamas, began making contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood and eventually established open contacts with the radical Islamic party. It campaigned on a strongly anti-American and anti-Israeli platform, but the U.S. State Department has reasoned that Egypt will remain an ally.State Department official Andrew J. Shapiro was cited as stating last month, “I know that the uncertainty over the Egyptian transition has prompted some in Congress to propose conditioning our security assistance to Egypt.“The administration believes that putting conditions on our assistance to Egypt is the wrong approach, and Secretary Clinton has made this point strongly. Egypt is a pivotal country in the Middle East and a long-time partner of the United States. “We have continued to rely on Egypt to support and advance U.S. interests in the region, including peace with Israel [and] confronting Iranian ambitions…”
