Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon participated in the opening ceremony of the International Air Show in Singapore Tuesday, where Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) presented a number of new military aircraft on the cutting edge of defense technology. "From the technology displayed here at the booths of the Defense Ministry, I can say that Israel is a superpower," Ya'alon stated during the ceremony. "The fact that Israel is represented here in this way, in a place so far from home, shows me that Israel is a superpower - in this respect, at least." "Israel is a reluctant superpower because it seems that threats and danger provide a better incentive to develop new military innovations in a wide variety of fields," he continued. "We face the threats of a changing Middle East, and despite being smaller [than our neighbors] in every way, our ability to respond is based mainly on or minds and hearts, on our knowledge and spirit.  This knowledge, this spirit drives the soldiers who fight, [and] drive the navy and the air force.""Not any less important are our engineers, scientists and technicians in various industries, who actualize our military capabilities for our soldiers," he added. "The world is undergoing quite a few changes that directly affect the defense ministry, not to mention economic and social changes," Ya'alon noted. "Our relatively stable security situation rests largely on our ability to respond to our more intimidating ordeals, and the partnership between those at the front and those on the laboratory bench, between the designer and the commander [. . .] is the guarantee to our security. "Ma'ariv lists the aircraft unveiled at the Air Show, including the "Super-Heron" unmanned drone (UAV), which has a 200 horsepower diesel engine and an advanced propulsion system. The drone can reach velocities covering tens of meters per second, according to the daily. The UAV has already been hailed as the most advanced of its kind worldwide, and the IAF has already deployed several for reconnaissance missions and maritime patrols.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It would have been the 103rd birthday of Ronald Reagan, an American president known for his frankness, and for possessing the courage to confront those countries who would threaten the freedom and security of the United States and her allies.Thursday (Feb. 6) was an auspicious occasion, then, for EMPact America's latest symposium, entitled “American Security and the Iranian Bomb: Analyzing Threats at Home and Abroad.”Political leaders and persons of influence from the Beltway and beyond gathered at the Reserve Officers' Association - a mere stone's throw from the Capitol building—to hear a public conversation with former CIA Director James Woolsey and rising GOP star Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), moderated by Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy. Following the dialogue with Woolsey and Cruz, Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ) delivered his own remarks, and was honored with EMPact America's “Guardian of the Grid” award, for his efforts to raise awareness of the looming EMP threat.Gaffney, an renowned expert on national security affairs, kicked off the gathering by briefing those in attendance on the nature of the threat. In a grim but poignant assessment, he explained the various ways in which an Electromagnetic Pulse weapon (or even a naturally-occurring solar storm) would most likely devastate our nation's energy infrastructure, leading to death tolls projected in the millions - as many as 9 out of every 10 Americans.“This is a catastrophe that we can not fix after it happens,” said Gaffney, “...the good news is that we can prevent it.”He went on to explain the various ways in which the United States could “harden” its electrical grids against attack or natural disaster. Indeed, Henry Schwartz, prominent New York-based entrepreneur and founder of EMPact America, raised this very issue, maintaining that EMP countermeasures are neither a recent development, nor are they out of America's financial reach.Referring to such technologies as “affordable,” he announced that “our government has been using EMP protection within the military and its continuity plan since the Cold War. The President and his men are well protected against EMP, including when traveling in Air Force One … however, you, and your loved ones, and the things you depend on to live, are not protected.”“But you could be protected!” Schwartz exclaimed.During the dialogue, former Director of Central Intelligence Jim Woolsey (who also served as an ambassador in nuclear disarmament talks between the United States and the Soviet Union), confirmed Schwartz's claims. Having crunched the numbers himself, Mr. Woolsey said, he estimated that a tax equivalent to $3 on every U.S. citizen would provide sufficient funds to retrofit electrical grids across the country, shielding them from an EMP event.Spending several minutes discussing the various “flavors” of EMP, Mr. Woolsey explained in detail the havoc that would be left in their wake. Of 18 key infrastructures that keep American life running, says Woolsey, 17 are run on electricity. He therefore referred to the type of EMP weapon that would run along our electrical grids, knocking out transformers, as a “real carrier of death.”He stressed the urgency of the matter, saying: “We rarely, if ever, have an opportunity to make a huge contribution to our security – and that's security not just from enemies, but security from the sun (and that latter one is inevitable no matter what we do with our foreign policy) – and we have an opportunity to do some of these things quickly. But the system is not working in such a way as to make it happen.”Soliciting the support and suggestions of those in attendance, Woolsey added that “this is one of those things that comes along perhaps once in a century or so that we just have to do. We are toying with the real possibility of the complete destruction of our society.”
Whereas Mr. Woolsey was able to provide an analytical intelligence-oriented perspective on the EMP threat, Sen. Ted Cruz was able to offer a more political point of view. He didn't mince words. Senator Cruz decried what he saw as the popular misconception that Iran's new president represents a more progressive government.“The press has described Rouhani as a 'moderate' because, I guess, he uses Twitter, so he can't be all bad,” the senator wryly observed. “If you look at just what they say in their own words... [Supreme Leader Ayatollah] Khamanei on November 20th, 2013, said 'the Zionist regime is a regime whose pillars are extremely shaky, and is doomed to collapse. Israelis 'should not be called humans.'”“This isn't a decade ago,” Cruz emphasized, “this is November of 2013.”Cruz also went on to quote social media posts by the Iranian cleric describing Israel as the “sinister, unclean, rabid dog of the region,” as well as quotes by President Rouhani and other sources in the Iranian administration and military, each alluding or directly referring to the annihilation of the Jewish state. The senator from Texas expressed an implied interdependency between the safety and security of the United States, and that of Israel, as did several other speakers in attendance. He expressed the concern that the moment Iran obtains a nuclear arsenal, it could be turned on Tel Aviv, New York, Los Angeles, or indeed, major cities throughout the western world.Yet rather than viewing Israel as a liability, Cruz declared that he takes comfort in the fact that “if Iran gets too close to acquiring nuclear weapons capability, I have an enormous degree of confidence that Israel will act to protect her right to exist as a Jewish state. And if Israel acts and launches a military attack to take out Iran's nuclear weapons capability, it is difficult to think of an action that would perform a greater service for U.S. national security interests.”Concluding the morning's proceedings was Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ-8), who was presented by war hero and EMPact America President David Bellavia with the organization's Guardian of the Grid Award. Franks expressed an unwaveringly pro-Israel stance similar to that espoused by Sen. Cruz. He also took the opportunity to criticize U.S. President Barack Obama for focusing more attention on condemning Israel for building houses “in their own capital city,” than on preventing a hostile regime from obtaining nuclear weapons. The congressman recounted his efforts to bring greater attention to the danger posed by Iran, and how his warnings until recently had fallen on deaf ears.
Rep. Franks did conclude, however, on an optimistic note. Speaking directly to the audience, he declared that “all the efforts that you make are going to be worthwhile.”“There is a moment in the life of every problem where it is big enough to be seen and understood, but still small enough to be addressed. And you and I are living in that moment.” Rep. Franks went on to express the pride he felt for those at the conference, and encouraged them to “keep storming the gates.”While Iran's nuclear agenda, and the threat of an EMP attack do not appear to be at the top of the Obama administration's list of priorities, the EMPact America conference nonetheless demonstrated that there are those in the House, the Senate, and the intelligence community, who recognize these as top priority issues, and will continue to sound the alarm until the U.S. commits to a decisive and meaningful response.

UN's Serry: Gaza Ceasefire Deteriorating

Special Coordinator Robert Serry says the understanding on a ceasefire reached in November 2012 is eroding.-By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 2/13/2014, 1:16 PM-Israelnationalnews

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, expressed his concern Wednesday about the deteriorating state of the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, following his visit there on Wednesday.“I am worried we are seeing more and more signs that the understanding on a ceasefire reached in November 2012 is eroding in both of its main requirements – the end of all hostilities and the opening of the crossings for people and goods,” he said.“During the past two months, we have seen more rockets being fired at Israel, border incidents, and Israeli retaliatory operations causing death or injury to civilians. The United Nations condemns the rise in violence, and all parties must act in accordance with international law.”In December, Israel agreed to resume the transfer of construction materials for UN projects in Gaza, where the world body is working on a “critical” $500-million package to build schools, social housing, and water and sanitation facilities, but Gaza terrorists' clashes with Israel have since increased and the work has been stalled since November.Serry stressed that imports of construction materials have dramatically decreased, lamenting the fact that the closure by Egypt of illegal tunnels beneath its border with Gaza has not been turned into an opportunity to increase the entry of such materials through legal crossings.
He welcomed the recent decision to allow in 1,000 tons of cement and other materials for flood relief, but stressed that imports of construction material for the private sector through legal crossings remain essential for Gaza’s economy while ensuring that it is not be diverted from its intended peaceful purposes. He also voiced the hope that the Rafah crossing with Egypt would soon resume normal operations.Serry visited the Gaza City pediatric hospital, which has been affected by frequent power cuts due to the precarious energy situation in Gaza. “Energy is the basis for everything,” he said, “whether desalination, private sector growth, or health services. Short-term solutions, such as the generous donation of Qatar to the Gaza power plant, remain essential.”“But we must also look to the medium term,” he added, voicing UN support for the Palestinian Authority’s request to establish a power line from Israel into Gaza for better and more cost-efficient access to energy.“Ultimately, only the reunification of Gaza and the West Bank under the legitimate Palestinian Authority, based on the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) commitments, can pave the way to a durable solution for Gaza, as part of political progress towards peace.”According to reports from Gaza, residents are dealing with stoppages of 12 to 18 hours on a near daily basis. While officials from the territory's Islamist rulers are quick to blame Israel, in reality Egypt is largely involved after having shut down the tunnels into the Sinai that were used to illegally smuggle fuel. Gaza's power plant was initially shut down on November 1 under the Egyptian siege.
Egypt has accused the Hamas terrorist organization which rules Gaza of promoting terror in Egypt through the Muslim Brotherhood, which it is an offshoot of. Hamas denies the charges, although Egypt is continuing toact against the terror group.

Netanyahu: Jews Won’t Go to Jail for Learning Torah

Prime Minister comes out against criminal sanctions on hareidi enlistment. ‘I won’t be a part of sending Jews to jail for Torah study.’-By Maayana Miskin and Ari Soffer-First Publish: 2/13/2014, 12:11 PM-INN

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has weighed in on the controversial issue of punishment for hareidi men who do not enlist in the IDF. The Prime Minister declared that he is against sending yeshiva students to jail – putting him on the side of the Jewish Home party, which favors non-criminal sanctions, and against the position of Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid.“I won’t be a part of sending Jews to jail for studying Torah,” Netanyahu declared. His statement came in response to a question from Gershon Mesika, head of the Samaria Regional Council, at a Likud party event. The Shaked Committee, which is tasked with drafting a law on hareidi enlistment, has seen its work delayed by debates over the question of punishment. The Yesh Atid party strongly favors criminal sanctions.Hareidi leaders have expressed strong opposition to criminal sanctions for yeshiva students, and pro-enlistment leaders have warned that strong sanctions could create a backlash that would mean fewer hareidi men in the army, not more.In contrast to the religious Zionist stream, whose yeshivas combine Torah study and military service, the hareidi community generally views Torah study as a contribution to Israel’s defense in itself and the vast majority do not perform national service. MK Aryeh Deri, head of the Shas party, told Channel 10 this week, “I believe that someone who learns Torah from morning to night is contributing just as much to national defense [as a soldier].”“Hareidi men who are not learning in yeshiva should serve in the IDF,” Deri said. However, he said, those who prefer to contribute to the state by learning Torah should be allowed to do so. Until recently, the now-expired Tal Law allowed all full-time Torah students to gain an exemption from national service. But criticism of that arrangement as both unfair and unsustainable (particularly given the hareidi community's rapid growth as the result of a high birth rate) culminated in the current proposals, often referred to as the "Sharing of the Burden" bill.Part of the issue at hand is also the high unemployment rate among hareidi men, most of whom opt for for full-time Torah study instead of seeking employment, or even basic academic or vocational qualifications. Those who at a later date opt to seek employment find themselves at a distinct disadvantage to other job candidates, and all but shut out of the job market. Proponents of the upcoming enlistment law say that avoiding the draft perpetuates a separation between hareidim and the rest of Israeli society, which makes penetrating the work market for more difficult in later years.Naftali Bennett for example has argued that encouraging hareidi employment is by far the most important goal of the new legislation.MK Omer Bar-Lev (Labor) has proposed a compromise plan that would create a longer grace period during which sanctions would not be enforced.
