Rapture Myths By Dr. Thomas Ice Pre-Trib Research Center
Hardly a week goes by that I don’t receive material opposing the pre-trib rapture which is filled with all kinds of error, both Scriptural and historical. For example, I ran across an article entitled Origin of the Secret Rapture Theory.The first sentence said, It may surprise and even shock you that neither the word rapture nor the teaching of a secret rapture is not mentioned in ANY Christian literature prior to 1830 — including the Bible! I am hardly surprised or shocked that anyone could pack so much error into a single sentence, but there we have for all to see. This month I want to deal with some of the popular myths about the pre-trib rapture teaching that Dr. LaHaye and I very much believe is taught in the New Testament Scriptures.
The Term Rapture
First of all, the word rapture is found in the Bible, if you have the Latin Vulgate produced by Jerome in the early 400s. The Vulgate was the main Bible of the medieval Western Church until the Reformation. It continues to this day as the primary Latin translation of the Roman Catholic Church. Yet, as we shall see later, it was Protestants who introduced the word rapture into the English language from the Latin raeptius.1 It was Jerome’s Vulgate that translated the original Greek verb harpazô used by Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, which is usually translated into English with the phrase caught up.The leading Greek Lexicon says that harpazô means snatch, seize, i.e., take suddenly and vehemently.2 This is the same meaning of the Latin word rapio to seize, snatch, tear away.3 It should not be surprising to anyone, that an English word was developed from the Latin which we use today known as rapture.
In Europe, during the Middle Ages and Reformation periods, the theologians were from various countries and therefore spoke different native tongues. However, the single language of the church, both Catholic and Protestant was Latin. In fact, many of the first books written and published in the American Colonies during the seventeenth century were in Latin. For example, Cotton Mather’s famous history of the American Colonies during the seventeenth century was written in Latin and called Magnalia Christi Americana, or The Great Works of Christ in America.4 Because it was done in Latin it could be read throughout Europe by the educated class. Thus, it should not be surprising to anyone that many new words came into the English language from a Latin source, especially in the realm of theology. Rapture is just such a word.While it is technically true that the word rapture does not appear in the English Bible, it does, nevertheless, appear in the Latin Vulgate translation of the Bible. Certainly the notion of a rapture appears many times in the Bible. Translators of the Bible into English could have been justified had they translated caught up in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 with the English word rapture.They also could have translated it by the word snatch. We could just as easily call the rapture the great snatch.
I have in my personal library at least 50 commentaries on 1 Thessalonians. Virtually all of them use the word rapture to describe the event in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. They do not appear interested in using it in a derogatory way nor do any of them go on an excursus about how this word does not appear in English translations. Most of these commentators do not hold to a pre-trib rapture view. They merely use the word because they know that it is one of the many Latin words that have made it into the English theological vernacular. Sorry that some have not yet heard.The rapture does occur in the Bible, especially if you read the Latin Vulgate. However, there is no doubt that the Greek word harpazô in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, usually translated into English caught up,conveys the rapture concept.
Rapture Usage
Our anti-rapture diatribe noted earlier said, the word rapture nor the teaching of a secret rapture is not mentioned in ANY Christian literature prior to 1830.Oh really! It is not hard to find out when English words were first introduced into the language. One needs only to check The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and it will cite examples of the history of the usage of the word. The oldest word in the rapture family is rapt. OED cites examples of rapt occurring in 1400 in English literature.5 The earliest instances of rapture in secular English literature are cited as 1605, 1607, and 1608.6 OED provides seven nuances of the word Rapture. The fourth entry is the biblical one defined as The act of conveying a person from one place to another esp. to heaven; the fact of being so conveyed.7 Two examples of this use are cited from the seventeenth century. The first by a writer named Ward in 1647 and the other by J. Edwards (not the American Jonathan) in 1693.8 It does not take long to realize that these examples are well before 1830.
Joseph Mede (1586-1638), considered in his day, a brilliant English exegete wrote a commentary on Revelation in 1627 called Clavis Apocalyptica (Key of the Revelation). In it he said, Therefore, it is not needful that the Resurrection of those which slept in Christ, and the Rapture of those which shall be left alive together with them in the air . . .9 While Mede was a premillennialist, he did not hold to a pre-trib rapture. Nor did the commentator and theologian John Gill (1697-1771) who wrote around 1745 the following in his commentary on 1 Thessalonians 4:17: . . . and to which rapture will contribute, the agility which the bodies both of the raised and changed saints will have: and this rapture of the living saints will be together with them; . . .10
To admit that the word rapture was used in the English language at least a couple of hundred years before J. N. Darby came along does not in the least mean that one believes in pretribulationism. The Greek word harpazô is used fourteen times in the New Testament. In addition to 1 Thessalonians 4:17, it is used at least three more times of one being raptured to heaven (2 Cor. 12:2, 4; Rev. 12:5). So there is no need to get upset over the use of the Latin based, English word rapture. It is a biblical word.
The Secret Rapture Myth
Included in the above tirade is an equation of the so-called secret rapture with pretribulationism. Sorry, but this is another mistake, another myth. In all my reading of pretribulationism and discussion with pretribulationists, I have never, that I can recall, heard a pre-trib rapturist use the nomenclature of secret rapture to describe our view. I have only heard the phrase secret rapture as a pejorative term used exclusively by anti-pretribulationists. Why? Apparently they enjoy fighting with a straw man.
Anti-pretribulationist, Ken Gentry declares,
On the very surface it is remarkable that one of the noisiest verses in Scripture is said to picture the secret rapture.11 The truth of the matter is that Gentry wrongly assumes that pretribulationists characterize their view of the rapture as secret. We do not! However, there are anti-pre-trib rapture advocates, like Dave MacPherson who have taught this myth. As a result, unwitting critics like Gentry have absorbed this myth into their rhetoric without doing their homework.Very likely it was Dave MacPherson who has spread this myth that equates pretribulationism with a secret rapture. In 1880 William Reid, in his book on Brethrenism,12 declares MacPherson, stated that Edward Irving contributed the notion of . . . the secret rapture of the saints.13 MacPherson later concludes, The pretrib rapture eventually became known as the secret rapture. This label was based on the presupposition that only certain persons would have privileged visibility or knowledge during the occurrence of this catching up.14 MacPherson does not actually reference anyone who believes in a pre-trib rapture when he makes these statements. It is through slight of hand that he slips such an assumption into his plot of fictional myths about the origins of pretribulationism.
In fact, Brethren researcher R. A. Huebner refutes MacPherson’s misinformation about the pre-trib rapture and its supposed association with a secret rapture teaching.15 Huebner notes that supposed relation of pretribulationism and a secret rapture are built upon the following false historical assumptions: First, the erroneous notions are the result of the myth that the Irvingites held a pretribulation rapture and also results from trying to link J. N. D. with this falsified Irvingism.16 Second, when speaking of events transpiring in the 1830s, Huebner says, the Secret Rapture as used at that point in time did not refer to the pretribulation rapture.17 Third,it seems that up to this point in time [the 1830s, T. D. I.], Secret Rapture referred to a rapture at the appearing [the second coming, T. D. I.].18 Fourth, I am not aware if JND ever thought that the rapture would be secret.19 It was the Irvingites, and not the Brethren, who believed in the secret rapture. Since the secret rapture and pretribulationism are not the same, this is where much of the confusion resides. The Irvingite view of the secret rapture was a belief that a few enlightened ones would be taken right before the second coming at the end of the tribulation. This is what Irvingite, Margaret Macdonald’s revelation is about. It is impossible to find a pre-trib rapture of any kind in her vision.20
Conclusion
I am sure that this call to anti-pre-trib rapture advocates will not result in much of a reduction of their zealous proclamation of mythological falsehoods about our blessed hope. It seems that too many are blinded by their zeal to oppose the biblical teachings of the any-moment hope of the rapture for them to take time to get their information straight. No wonder Columba Graham Flegg, in his scholarly work on the Irvingites spoke specifically of Dave MacPherson’s work as less scholarly.Flegg said, the conclusions reached in this work and the rationale behind them are hardly convincing.21 Now why is an expert on the Irvingites not impressed with MacPherson’s work? Because Flegg has a thorough knowledge about the times in which MacPherson writes and realizes that he is spinning out myths. Maranatha!

The State Department’s Islamic Supremacist By Robert Spencer

It’s unbelievable but true: the imam of the projected Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero, Feisal Abdul Rauf, is on a grand tour to Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates – paid for by the U.S. State Department with taxpayer money.
The State Department confirmed Tuesday that they were sending Rauf on this mission. He is a distinguished Muslim cleric,insisted P. J. Crowley, a State Department spokesman. Crowley explained: We do have a program whereby, through our Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau here at the State Department, we send people from Muslim communities here in this country around the world to help people overseas understand our society and the role of religion within our society.Crowley emphasized that Rauf’s trip was nothing new: he said that the State Department had a long-term relationship with the famous imam, and pointed out that in 2007 the Bush State Department sent Rauf to Morocco, as well as to Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE. Obama sent Rauf to Egypt last year.Why have two administrations been so anxious to underwrite this Islamic supremacist cleric’s globetrotting? Crowley explained that Rauf’s work on tolerance and religious diversity is well-known and he brings a moderate perspective to foreign audiences on what it’s like to be a practicing Muslim in the United States.One wonders what definition of moderate Crowley, and the Bush and Obama State Departments, use. Rauf openly touts the virtues of Islamic law, Sharia, in his book What’s Right with Islam. Although he covers his arguments in blandness and protestations that there is no significant difference between Sharia and America’s founding principles, he never gets around to discussing the elements of Sharia that outrage principles of human rights that are otherwise universally accepted: the draconian punishments of stoning for adultery and amputation of the hand for theft; the death penalty for those who leave Islam; the institutionalized subjugation of women and non-Muslims; and more.
Notably, however, he does call in the book for restrictions on the freedom of speech. Rauf has compared the West unfavorably to the Islamic world, since the West protects the right to say anything, no matter how insensitive or scandalous,while Islamic cultures balance freedom of expression with respect for elders, traditions and modesty. The idea of respect and honor to elders is deeply ingrained in their psyches.He has criticized the Swiss ban on minarets as a restriction on religious freedom, without saying a single word about the severe restrictions on non-Muslim religious practice in Islamic states such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, and Sudan.
Rauf also says that what Muslims want is to ensure that their secular laws are not in conflict with the Quran or the Hadith, the sayings of Muhammad.For Muslims in the U.S., that will inevitably involve bringing Sharia here.Rauf has also called Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams’ endorsement of the implementation of Sharia courts in Britain forward thinking – and once again in doing so remained silent about Islamic law’s institutionalized and divinely sanctioned denial of the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law.There are numerous other indications that Rauf is not the sterling example of Islamic moderation that the State Department assumes him to be. He has refused to denounce Hamas. He has lied about his commitment to religious dialogue, telling American non-Muslims that the Ground Zero mega-mosque will be dedicated to dialogue and harmony among people of different faiths, while telling the Arabic media that he doesn’t believe in religious dialogue. He has lied about whether the Islamic center planned for the Ground Zero site will contain a mosque or not, calling it a prayer room without bothering to mention that it will be a place for Islamic prayer, not Jewish or Christian or Hindu or Buddhist prayer.After the Fort Hood jihad massacre, Rauf made the patently dishonest claim that the shootings were against the laws of Islam.None of the mainstream media reporters who dutifully relayed his words to the public bothered to ask him what he meant when Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan’s writings came to light, explaining (with copious references to the Qur’an) the Islamic religious obligation to wage war against infidels. Rauf, as a leading American moderate,was in an excellent position at that time to explain in the American public square exactly how his version of Islam differed from Hasan’s, so as to allay the legitimate concerns of non-Muslims and emphasize to Muslims in America how and why they should be unreservedly patriotic Americans. He passed up the opportunity.
Belying his reputation as a moderate, Rauf is involved with a group that helped fund the jihad flotilla against Israel. He has also lied about whether or not the project is getting foreign funding, telling the American media that the Ground Zero mosque would be funded solely by contributions from Muslims in the United States: We hope to raise it from a combination of gifts from the local Muslim community and perhaps from some combination of bonds or something like that.But then he told the Arabic-language Asharq Al-Awsat that “the Islamic center will be financed through contributions from Muslims in the US, as well as by donations from Arab and Islamic countries.Rauf has blamed the West, rather than Islamic jihadists, for jihad terrorism, and he has done so more than once. He has said, according to Australia’s Sun-Herald, that the US and the West must acknowledge the harm they have done to Muslims before terrorism can end.He has also asserted that Western active involvement in shaping the internal affairs of Islamic societies have contributed to the creation of terrorism done in the name of Islam.About the role that the jihad doctrine has played in inspiring jihad terrorists, he has been notably silent. After the 9/11 jihad terror attacks, he said that American foreign policy had to be held as an accessory to those attacks.Many years have passed, of course, since he said that. But now that he is an official emissary of the U.S. State Department, don’t the American people deserve at least some answers as to Rauf’s questionable statements and activities? Unfortunately, in increasingly elitist Washington, it is unlikely that the questions themselves will even be acknowledged.

A. The Angel of the Lord referred to in the Old Testament was indeed Jesus Christ. This was Jesus' title and form before He came to the Earth to be born as a human being. The Angel of the Lord was Jesus' preincarnate state, meaning who and what He was before manifesting Himself in human form.
Existed Before Own Birth
We know that Jesus existed before He was born a human as recorded in the Gospels because the Bible teaches that Jesus is God. The following verses bear witness to the fact that Jesus existed before His incarnation as a man.In the following verse, Jesus is saying that He existed before the Patriarch Abraham was ever alive, almost 1,800 years earlier.
I tell you the truth,Jesus answered, before Abraham was born, I am! - John 8:58
John the Baptist's message included a verification that Jesus, who was a few months younger than John by birth, existed before John was ever conceived.
John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.- John 1:15
One of the best verses demonstrating Jesus' pre-existence, here Jesus is saying that He existed before the Creation.
And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.- John 17:5
Again, the Lamb, which is another name given to Jesus, is said to have existed before the Creation.
...the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.- Revelation 13:8
We even know that Jesus had no beginning, for He flat out declared He was one with the Father and so shared God's eternal attributes.

The Bible gives the reader many indicators that the Angel of the Lord wasn't just an angel, or even a specially designated angel, but God Himself. We know this because when the Angel of the Lord interacted with people in the Old Testament, they treated Him with the reverence due only to God.Notice the switch between Angel of the Lord and LORD in Judges 6:11-24, for instance. In this Old Testament story, the soon-to-be judge Gideon is greeted by the Angel of the Lord. Verse 11 says in a very human fashion, and indeed probably looking just like a human, the Angel of the Lord sat down under an oak tree and struck up a conversation with Gideon. Gideon asks why the Lord had not fulfilled the wonders God promised the people of Israel that he was waiting for. The reaction was that the LORD turned to him and replied, which identifies the Angel as the Lord Himself.Gideon later brought food that the Angel of the Lord's staff consumed with fire, followed by a dramatic disappearance. Gideon's reply to such a sight in verse 22 was, Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face! He feared dying from seeing the living God. Absent in form but still clearly present, the Lord replies in voice in verse 23, Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.Clearly, this angel was no angel at all, but the Lord God Himself!
There are many other visits from the Angel of the Lord in which the recipients of the visit gave the title and honor due only to God. Hagar calls the Angel of the Lord LORD,God,and One in Genesis 16:7-13. Jesus appeared to Abraham when the three men visited (Genesis 18), to Jacob whom He wrestled (Genesis 32:22-31), and to Manoah to give the promise of a son named Samson (Judges 13:2-6).The Angel of the LORD even declares Himself to be God from the burning bush to Moses in Exodus 3:2-6 with the use of the title I Am. Jesus claimed that title for Himself in John 8:58. Jesus by saying He was I Am was the great Yahweh, also known to us today as Jehovah God.
Other Personage?
Couldn't the Angel of the Lord then be the Father or the Holy Spirit? Among the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who make up the Trinity, the Father after the Fall couldn't be seen without causing the death of the onlooker, such as when God told the Israelites not to approach His mountain or they'd surely die (Ex. 19:12). When the Holy Spirit interacted in the Old Testament, it was always spiritual in form to empower a chosen individual like giving super strength to Samson or the gift of prophecy to King Saul.When human form was needed, the second person of the Trinity — Jesus Christ — fulfilled that role as the Angel of the Lord.

MSNBC's fast-talking Chris Matthews went off the deep end last week over those who question the constitutional eligibility of the one who sends thrills up his leg.
You've got to see it to believe it. I don't normally recommend anyone watch MSNBC or Matthews, but the beauty of the YouTube age is that gems like this are saved for future generations who may want to redeem the profession of journalism some day and need reminders of how far the standards of the news industry plummeted early in the 21st century.Matthews took it very, very personally when commenting on the latest CNN poll showing only 42 percent of Americans believe Barack Obama's birth story. In the world of Chris Matthews, when Americans want proof that politicians are telling them the truth this means they harbor a suspicion that he was not born here and that the president is an illegal alien, never went through the naturalization process and therefore is a potential subject for deportation.New strategy unveiled on answering Obama's eligibility questions. See how you can help. Do people really mean it when they tell pollsters that they do not believe President Obama was definitely born in the U.S.? he asked rhetorically. Do people really believe he was born in Kenya and if so to a Kenyan mother or in Indonesia? Of course, if Chris Matthews really wanted answers to those questions, there are any number of people he could have invited on the air – about 174 million of them, if the CNN poll is right. But he didn't want a dialogue. He doesn't want to know what these people really think. He wanted only to make a caricature of what now represents the majority opinion in the U.S.
You know what's so funny about this? Matthews' caricature, especially about the Indonesia birth possibility, doesn't fit me. It doesn't fit any birthers I know. I've never even heard any speculation about him being born in Indonesia. But it does fit public statements made by none other than … Chris Matthews. I take you back to the Dec. 18, 2007, edition of Hardball with Chris Matthews. Check out the official MSNBC transcript for yourself. It was Chris Matthews back then stating as fact that Obama was born in Indonesia – and explaining it as a plus! On his program that night, Matthews played a video clip of former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, a Hillary Clinton supporter, defending Obama against accusations that he was some kind of Islamic Manchurian Candidate.
Here's what Matthews said after the clip: So, is Hillary backer Bob Kerrey pretending to sell Obama, but clearly putting the shiv in? Here is Hillary Clinton defending him and Bob Kerrey: 'I think the remarks were very positive. I know Bob. He was being very complimentary of Senator Obama. He was making a point that Senator Obama makes himself all the time, that, because of his upbringing and his heritage, he is, in his view – in his view, catch that line, very well-suited to communicate with the rest of the world. And he has [said] himself that he wants to have a particular outreach to the Islamic world. So, I think Senator Kerrey was being, you know, very generous in what he said.Matthews continued: But didn't Hillary dump on Obama a few days ago for playing up his Indonesian roots? So, what is she up to here? Is she pushing how great he is for having been born in Indonesia, or what, or simply reminding everybody about his background, his Islamic background? Last week Matthews accused people like me of assassinating Obama with lies. Yet Matthews impugns the motives of people who actually say nice things about Obama. You can't win with people like this. Senator Joe Lieberman’s draconian Internet takeover legislation, the 197-page Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, is being promoted as a vital tool to protect vulnerable infrastructure hubs from terrorist attacks, but as a recent Wall Street Journal report makes clear, large industrial power and water plants are not even connected to the public Internet.Lieberman has been busy over the last several months pushing the cybersecurity agenda, with a bill that would hand President Obama the power to shut down parts of the world wide web for at least four months with no congressional oversight in the event of a cyber attack on critical infrastructure systems in the U.S.However, the primary purpose of cybersecurity and Lieberman’s legislation is to combat a problem that doesn’t exist.As a recent Wired News article highlighted, power grid and drinking water systems, Are rarely connected directly to the public internet. And that makes gaining access to grid-controlling networks a challenge for all but the most dedicated, motivated and skilled — nation-states, in other words.The article explains that it would take a gargantuan national effort on behalf of a nation state, utilizing a plethora of national resources, to even begin to attempt taking down complex power and water systems. This isn’t merely a case of a rag-tag terrorist group hacking into a website via their laptops.
Even in places like the United States, where there isn’t much you cannot find online, you’re not going to be able to get the depth and detail you need to turn off the lights with a simple network connection,writes Michael Tanji.Indeed, the only way to hack into or infect the vast majority of sophisticated infrastructure systems is by means of a virus contained on an external USB hard drive physically inserted on site, as a recent case reported on by the Wall Street Journal involving the German engineering giant Siemens AG proved.Siemans provides industrial control system software that is used to monitor large automated plants – from manufacturing to power generation to water treatment. A recent attempt to steal data from one of their clients, a German manufacturing company, was carried out by means of a virus loaded onto a USB data stick which was then inserted into one of the computers on the manufacturing plant’s network. The hack attack had nothing to do with the Internet, because like almost all major plants, the German company did not have its control systems hooked up to the public Internet.We are constantly told that the Internet needs to be subject to government control because cyberterrorists could hack in and bring down the national power grid. However, the vast majority of the U.S. power infrastructure is not connected to the Internet. It will only be connected to the Internet if the government accelerates the implementation of smart grid technology, so in this sense, the government itself is leaving the power grid more vulnerable to hackers by its own programs.While the public facade of cybersecurity is supposed to be about protecting crucial infrastructure hubs, which as we have documented are not even at risk from hackers using the public Internet, the real agenda behind the program is about handing government control over the Internet so that it is in a better position to censor its critics.
During an appearance with CNN’s Candy Crowley, Lieberman let slip the real motive behind the cybersecurity agenda when he stated, Right now China, the government, can disconnect parts of its Internet in case of war and we need to have that here too.The problem with this statement is that the Communist Chinese government does not disconnect parts of the Internet because of genuine security concerns, it habitually does so only to oppress and silence victims of government abuse and atrocities.China has exercised its power to shut down the Internet, something that Lieberman wants to introduce in the U.S., at politically sensitive times in order to stem the flow of information about government abuse of its citizens. During the anti-government riots which occurred in July 2009, the Chinese government completely shut down the Internet across the entire northwestern region of Xinjiang for days. In several regions, the authorities completely cut off the Internet for nearly a year, with many areas only now slowly starting to come back online. Major news and discussion portals used by the Muslim Uighurs in the area remain blocked. Similarly, Internet access in parts of Tibet is routinely restricted as part of government efforts to pre-empt and neutralize unrest.In addition, the Chinese government routinely orders Twitter and Facebook-like services to purge sites of politically sensitive words and expressions.If this is the kind of Internet Lieberman wants the United States to move towards then it should be resisted at every turn because such a system has no place in a supposedly free country. The fact that proponents of cybersecurity are hyping a completely manufactured menace, the false notion that hackers could should down power and water plants via the public Internet, strongly indicates that the true purpose of the program is being deliberately hidden to prevent more Americans from discovering its actual intended role – to give the government the power to regulate and suffocate free speech on the world wide web.

Remember last summer when the Transportation Security Administration claimed that images from naked body scanners cannot be saved or stored? Now the U.S. Marshals Service is getting in on the action.Earlier this year, Infowars.com reported on a letter dated February 24, 2010 and signed by Gale D. Rossides, Acting Administrator of the TSA, that admits the machines routinely save and store images. TSA requires AIT machines to have the capability to retain and export imagines (sic) only for testing, training, and evaluation purposes, Rossides wrote to Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security.In fact, a TSA document detailing the TSA’s procurement specifications, and classified as sensitive security information,reveals that the machines must allow exporting of image data in real time and provide a mechanism for high-speed transfer of image data over the network. In other words, the machines are manufactured specifically to store and transmit images of naked bodies.This obvious violation of privacy and the Constitution is not a problem for the government, though. The program is designed to respect individual sensibilities regarding privacy, modesty and personal autonomy to the maximum extent possible, while still performing its crucial function of protecting all members of the public from potentially catastrophic events,Janet Napolitano and the Department of Homeland Security argue in brief drafted last month. So confident is Napolitano of the legality of the high-tech snoop machines, she ordered they be deployed in airports around the country last month. Now it turns out police agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, are storing naked body scanner images too. In response, the advocacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center has filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to grant an immediate injunction and putting a kibosh to the intrusive and unconstitutional snoop program.
Despite the revelation, the TSA steadfastly maintains that naked body scanners are delivered to airports with the image recording functions disabled. We’re not recording them,TSA spokeswoman Sari Koshetz told CNET on Wednesday.I’m reiterating that to the public. We are not ever activating those capabilities at the airport.Let’s get serious here. Naked body scanners are obviously being used to compliment existing dossiers on Americans. The NSA, FBI, CIA, and multitudinous government agencies have long profiled all aspects of the lives of American citizens. Images captured by naked body scanners, including images of genitals, are merely the next logical step in this process.

No anonymity is the future of web in the opinion of Google's CEO Eric Schmidt. He said many creepy things about privacy at the Techonomy Conference. The focus of the conference was how technology is changing and can change society. Schmidt's message was that anonymity is a dangerous thing and governments will demand an end to it.
Privacy is incredibly important,Schmidt stated.Privacy is not the same thing as anonymity. It's very important that Google and everyone else respects people's privacy. People have a right to privacy; it's natural; it's normal. It's the right way to do things. But if you are trying to commit a terrible, evil crime, it's not obvious that you should be able to do so with complete anonymity. There are no systems in our society which allow you to do that. Judges insist on unmasking who the perpetrator was. So absolute anonymity could lead to some very difficult decisions for our governments and our society as a whole.Whether it was a Freudian slip or a simple misstatement, Schmidt is correct; it is not obvious that if you are anonymous, you are therefore likely to commit a terrible, evil crime.Anonymity equaling a future heinous act seems to be the direction some online security experts are headed. The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace proposes to do away with anonymous multiple identities in favor of one real identity. Part of the reasoning behind one trusted identity is to do away with crime. But isn't this the same logic of anonymity breeding anti-social behavior and criminals? According to ReadWriteWeb, Schmidt said of anti-social behavior, The only way to manage this is true transparency and no anonymity. In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you. We need a [verified] name service for people. Governments will demand it.Since Google's CEO has proclaimed the future of the web is no anonymity, does that make it a fact? If we keep hearing that privacy is dead and long buried, how long before we accept that anonymity is an anti-social behavior and a crime? Security expert Bruce Schneier suggests that we protect our privacy if we are thinking about it, but we give up our privacy when we are not thinking about it.
Schneier wrote, Here's the problem: The very companies whose CEOs eulogize privacy make their money by controlling vast amounts of their users' information. Whether through targeted advertising, cross-selling or simply convincing their users to spend more time on their site and sign up their friends, more information shared in more ways, more publicly means more profits. This means these companies are motivated to continually ratchet down the privacy of their services, while at the same time pronouncing privacy erosions as inevitable and giving users the illusion of control.The loss of anonymity will endanger privacy. It's unsettling to think governments will demand an end to anonymous identities. Even if Schmidt is Google's CEO, his message of anonymity as a dangerous thing is highly controversial. Google is in the business of mining and monetizing data, so isn't that a conflict of interest? Look how much Google knows about you now.Bruce Schneier put it eloquently, If we believe privacy is a social good, something necessary for democracy, liberty and human dignity, then we can't rely on market forces to maintain it.

Environmentalism, Government Health care, running away from God and Islamic radicalism.The self appointed Gods of control hide behind the environmental movement, health care movement, assault against God and faith and Islamic radicalism.Environmental movement.This is a multi decade, slippery, financed and distorted push for international control, backed by Mad magazine fabricated science. As we all know by now, Obama has tried to fast track and push the draconian Cap and Trade Bill and spoken along with the UN on our international responsibilities to solve global warming. Remember the Copenhagen, international climate summit failure that Obama went to and committed Billions of US dollars? You may recall that Obama went to this summit after the world learned of the key global warming stats and scientific evidence that had been lost or destroyed.By the time Obama and his posse were on a plane to Copenhagen to cry about the melting world, thousands of scientists had weighed in debunking the whole thing and calling the global warming push a total fraud and scheme. No matter, Obama went, cried and offered billions of tax payer funds anyway because he was building a case for his cap and trade bill….why? Cap and Trade must happen for Obama so he can control even further small, medium and large business, while causing more dependency by the masses on big Government.
With Cap and Trade, gas and oil prices would be heavily regulated, thus cost of doing business and utility rates for millions would sky rocket. I guess we could look at miles of windmills that could move 3 Kleenex boxes if the nation leaned in the direction of the windmills and thought warm thoughts. Look for the career body parts of what is left of congress to push this in the lame duck session. This is the most dangerous time for our country because the countless progressive liberals that the masses are going to vote out will have no care in the world about doing the right thing for America or reflecting the will of the people. They will only be looking for revenge and going out with a big bang to make hell for the American people and GOP controlling their congress.
The next monster of control is the Obama Health care plan.
This is unfolding as we speak and will shred our health freedoms for years to come unless we completely defund and/or repeal it. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist IQ to figure out that this is nothing but another, national control weapon, designed to manipulate our choices, behaviors and order our health decisions. Magically it is controlled by that health oriented and benevolent group the IRS. We all know by now that Health care will be rationed especially for the elderly and those who are fighting severe and terminal illness. They will be encouraged in their forced, end of life counseling sessions to consider assisted suicide. There are many nightmares with this unfolding bill. Recently I interviewed on air Ron Rock, CEO of Northwest Specialty Hospital, one of the highest ranking, Physician owned hospitals in the country. We talked of this Bills push to eventually manipulate a one payer system, morphing us all into Government controlled health care and dictating the salaries of Physicians as well as ordering the type and timing of health care. Obama wants Doctors to become socialized puppets and the masses to take care from the Government and wean the care way down when a person is facing expensive and terminal challenges or is simply older. Welcome Dr. Mengela.No doubt with the IRS on board, Health care will be tracked and connected eventually to everything including mental health, gun ownership, the car you drive, what you eat, what you weigh, habits and naturally what you do financially. Can you imagine the health benefit when your account is seized due to a late payment to the Government or a health care insurer the IRS knows about? I can feel the health just oozing through my body.Another huge assault on our freedoms is our country moving away from God and the Holy Bible. I have spoken and written about this many times, the ultimate clash between anything Christian, including our constitution and Judeo Christian values and the socialist/communist push. Both are Gods. The God of the Holy Bible is the only real God and the socialist/communist God is the classic fake that has ravaged human kind for hundreds of years and continues to attempt total control under new faces and disguises. What is behind the endless law suits and fights by groups like the ACLU and leftist progressives against Christians and faith? It is the spirit of communism, socialism and totalitarianism that demands to be God and control everything. It can’t freely take over everything and manipulate the money it wants when people are connected with the real God and a relationship with Him. You see the Bible defines real freedom and worth for individuals. That is a 1000% clash with Government control. Cap and Trade, Government Health care and the Obama regime are completely operating under the big Government premise, cradle to grave control. It is evil.
Obama in many ways, clones Hitler who was legally voted into power by German parliament in 1933 as a classic socialist who wanted dictatorial power. He rapidly pursued this course by first seducing the German people with the promise of national health care and pushing the aggressive greens agenda and environmental controls. As Obama has done, Hitler promised jobs for everyone and immediately came for the guns saying the culture needed to help safe guard their streets since Russia was such a growing danger after destroying the German Government building. There was only one small problem with the Russians blowing up the German Government building….they didn’t. The nazis did under the deceitful leadership of Hitler, just so they would have a big enough reason to assume more control and come for the guns. Germans were glad to give up their guns at the time. They thought they were helping their country in troubled times under a visionary leader who was bringing jobs, health care, environmental improvements and change. Does this look familiar anyone? This administration not only is establishing monstrous control with health care and soon the environment it is busy establishing a bold list of enemies in America. Remember the leaked Homeland Security Report identifying pro lifers, supporters of the 2nd amendment, returning vets, those supportive of sovereignty, and those uncomfortable with communist regimes as potential domestic terrorists. This kind of slander and continued attacks continues against the American backbone.Finally, we see the ongoing battles against Islamic Fundamentalism which is placated and backed by many in our own Government. This enemy paints itself as a victim and we, the Christians and the Jews are the persecutors…….oh, the mentally ill persecutors, Islamaphobes. Islamic extremists are backed by billions of dollars, most of the Middle East and stupidly the progressive left and even Obama. Remember the bowing to the Saudi King and 1 1/5 billion given to the serial killer group Hamas? Sharia law and Islam teach a conquering, dominating message where freedom has no place whatsoever. Women are viewed as half the worth of men and husbands are allowed to beat their wives. Peace this and peace that has long been the media distorted and marketing sound bite message. We are to shut up, ignore body parts flying here and there and concentrate on the peace of it all. Some Muslims may be peaceful and want to be left alone, however, countless millions want world domination, fund world conquest on a variety of levels and play the sound bite ‘peace’ game. This is a huge danger facing the western world and America.To survive the attacks of the immoral progressive left, Islamic radicals and push of radical communist/socialists hiding behind health and the environment, we must vote in conservative servants again. We must only vote in people who will protect our sovereignty, cut our taxes to REALLY create jobs and promote economic growth and put health care back in the hands of the American people and capitalism.Finally, The God of the living Holy Bible must be put back in control of our national direction, conscience and various lifestyles.

10 August 2010: Responsibility for the 28 July terrorist attack on the Japanese-owned VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) M Star in the Strait of Hormuz has been claimed by the Al Qaeda-affiliated group known as Abdullah Azzam Brigades (AAB hereafter). The AAB further claims the attack was a suicide mission launched by a smaller cell named after the long-deceased (2003) Saudi Arabian AQ terrorist and former Usama bin Laden bodyguard, Yusuf AL-UYEYRI and names Ayyub AL-TAISHAN as the lone terrorist who, after midnight on Wednesday, 27 July, piloted some non-descript type explosive laden craft from an undiclosed location near the Strait of Hormuz and then detonated it alongside the VLCC M Star. Also within this claim of responsibility the AAB states the attack was to avenge the imprisonment of Islamic terrorist Sheikh Omar Adbel RAHMAN. Today, people are more persuaded than ever that they have perfect freedom, yet they have brought their freedom to us and laid it humbly at our feet.—The Grand Inquisitor
Freedom doesn’t grow on trees. It exists by virtue of independence from the powers that might take that freedom away. Since there is no such thing as perfect freedom, and we must all live under one form of authority or another, rights exist to fence out authority from the space allotted to freedom. Rights create an artificial form of freedom through a covenant with the authorities. The more leverage the citizens have over the authorities, the more they can prevent those rights from being trampled upon.The problem begins when those rights are taken for granted. For example, when people begin to assume that the rights they enjoy are inherent to the system, so that they don’t have to worry about them. As long as the system exists, so do their rights.In the United States, many Americans assume that as long as the flag waves and everyone celebrates the 4th of July, then their rights are safe. But it is entirely possible to have an America in which the flag still waves and people still go to see fireworks on the 4th of July, and in which there are no more rights or freedoms left. The only way this can happen, though, is when people forget what the flag means and what the 4th of July means, the symbolism of a flag composed of individual states, and a holiday celebrating the Declaration of Independence, which holds that a people may overthrow a government when it violates their rights.It is dangerous to celebrate symbols, while forgetting what they mean. Because a nation’s fundamental symbols are the keys to its power. They are its scepters and thrones. And when people forget what the symbols mean and begin bowing to the symbols themselves—it becomes possible for a tyrant to take the symbols and have people bow to him, even as he desecrates what those symbols actually stand for.

Obama’s rise to power could not have taken place except through a forgetfulness that has been with us for some time now. And Obama has been quite talented at manipulating symbols, posing in front of half a dozen flags, a Superman statue, glowing halos, historic sites and documents. That these symbols have no meaning to him except as tokens of power, that his very presence next to them or adjacent to them, should be anathema because of the profound gap between the ideals they represent, and the agenda he represents, is obvious to those who remember that symbols also have meanings.But Obama’s success is due to those who do not remember. To whom the flag represents America, but who do not understand that it is not a random selection of shapes meant to look pretty against a blue sky. To whom the Constitution is a document that protects their freedoms, without understand how it does that and what part their active participation must play for it to work. And so Obama exploits symbols, while the media warns about the dangers of anyone literate enough to understand their meanings. In the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is a dangerous extremist. Because he can see what those in power can’t.Blurring the lines between permissible and impermissible uses of authority
Unfortunately we live in an age in which people take systems for granted. The world around us teems with complexity. We use technologies we don’t understand. We rely on bureaucracies whose complexities we can’t navigate. The dramatic expansion of the government has made its workings incomprehensible. The ObamaCare bill alone defied anyone to read through the whole thing. In the face of such complexity, it becomes easier to be satisfied with symbols. And it also becomes easy for those in charge to play on that resignation, blurring the lines between permissible and impermissible uses of authority, and then wiping out those lines altogether.
Law has always been the obstacle of those who want unlimited power. Because laws are created to form boundaries and restrictions. Which means that those who want unlimited power will either seek to tear down laws, or to make law itself so complex that it becomes nearly incomprehensible. To multiply law upon law, until there are so many laws that everyone is either guilty of something, or suspects that he might be. And then the citizenry themselves will happily tear down the law, will ignore wrongdoing by the high and mighty, and instead of knowing their rights, they will look for someone to protect them.If no one understands the system or its laws, it becomes easy to play divide and conquer. To convince different groups that their welfare is in jeopardy, to promise each one a bigger share of the pie, cheat them all, and pass the blame from one group to the other. Class warfare, racial warfare, farmers against city dwellers, owners against workers, each county against the other, each state against the other. And all you have to do is be in a position to control and distribute all the money. Then wave the right symbol at the right time. A flag, the Constitution and some fireworks. It doesn’t really matter much by then anymore.And in the process both rights and freedoms have vanished. Because the legal guarantees no longer mean anything, they only worked when an informed citizenry controlled the system, and freedoms no longer exist, because there is no such thing as independence from authority anymore. Authority is now everywhere. And everything depends on it. Even the words themselves lose all meaning. Privileges are redefined to mean rights. Freedom comes to mean being told what to do.

Freedom requires independence from authority. Rights only exist so long as those in authority are prevented from rewriting the laws to give themselves absolute power. But political and cultural elites habitually attempt to rewrite the laws, sometimes with the best of intentions, sometimes with the worst. But whatever their purpose, the new laws eventually promote centralization and eliminate rights. Finally, the only law is that of power. No other laws matter anymore.In order to get there, the system must be torn down and rebuilt again in a new image. And yet make it seem as if nothing has changed at all. Because the flags are still waving, and everyone still celebrates the 4th of July. Which means there must still be freedom, all evidence to the contrary. So the new system retains the old symbols, because it finds them useful in manipulating the complacent. But the ideas and powers the symbols represent, no longer exist.The new system celebrates its own unlimited power, reflects the self-adoration of its masters, reeks of their arrogance and resonates to their childish willfulness. For in the end those who want unlimited power are damaged souls. Children determined to be the only ones to play with any of the toys. Their lack of empathy, their arrogance and ruthlessness all signal their fundamental immaturity. They are determined to rule, to pillage and plunder, to wield absolute power—because there is something missing inside them.

Rewriting the laws enables them to control everything. Convincing some of the people that they are the only thing standing between them and the supremacy of the other people they have already told the same thing to, they gleefully prey on people’s fearfulness and greed. They believe in wealth redistribution, but primarily for themselves. And by consolidating power, they also consolidate wealth. In the name of the people, they rob the people. And they do it under the symbols they have misappropriated. The symbols that mean their actions are illegitimate.The greatest threat to tyranny is a people who refuse to give up their rights, or to let those in power rewrite the laws to suit themselves. The political and cultural elites will always attempt to do this, undermining the system as it is, in order to gain power, loot and pillage everything under the control of that system, and then preside over its decline. The Constitution was created to stop that from happening. It represents a shield against tyranny, but all documents are in the end only words and paper. It is only people who can preserve and realize them. There is no magic in paper and parchment, nor in ink alone. It is living men and women who are the stewards of their heritage, living Constitutions and flags, blood not ink, skin not parchment, who give it potency, who can keep its ideals, so that it does not become only a symbol enshrined in a glass case. Because only a nation of living Constitutions can be free.

Gore bitterly denounced the Senate and federal government stating several times, The U.S. Senate has failed us and The federal government has failed us.Gore even seemed to blame President Obama by emphasizing that the government as a whole has failed us… although the House did its job. [emphasis added]Gored urged his listeners to take the realistic view that they had failed badly.Gore said that Comprehensive legislation is not likely to be debated and that a lame duck debate is a very slim possibility indeed.(N.B. However, in recent meetings with George Mitchell – Obama's envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – PA security chiefs admitted their forces are not yet fully ready to assume security control of Area C, according to sources familiar with the meetings.Since the late 1990s, the U.S. has run training bases for PA militias. The U.S. also has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in financial aid and weapons to build up the PA militias.The past two years, the U.S. stepped up its efforts at training the PA, running more advanced courses guided by Keith Dayton, the U.S. security coordinator to the Palestinian territories. In 2007, Dayton initiated an advanced program for Palestinian police that trains 500 to 600 cadets at a time at the American bases.The U.S. currently operates training bases for the PA police and other militias, such as Force 17 and the Preventative Security Services in the West Bank city of Jericho and the Jordanian village of Giftlik. New superbugs spreading from South Asia: study

PARIS (AFP) – Plastic surgery patients have carried a new class of superbugs resistant to almost all antibiotics from South Asia to Britain and they could spread worldwide, researchers reported Wednesday.Many hospital infections that were already difficult to treat have become even more impervious to drugs thanks to a recently discovered gene that can jump across different species of bacteria.This so-called NDM-1 gene was first identified last year by Cardiff University's Timothy Walsh in two types of bacteria -- Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli -- in a Swedish patient admitted to hospital in India.Worryingly, the new NDM-1 bacteria are resistant even to carbapenems, a group of antibiotics often reserved as a last resort for emergency treatment for multi-drug resistant bugs.In the new study, led by Walsh and Madras University's Karthikeyan Kumarasamy, researchers set out to determine how common the NDM-1 producing bacteria were in South Asia and Britain, where several cases had turned up.Checking hospital patients with suspect symptoms, they found 44 cases -- 1.5 percent of those screened -- in Chennai, and 26 (eight percent) in Haryana, both in India.They likewise found the superbug in Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well 37 cases in Britain, where several patients had recently travelled to India or Pakistan for cosmetic surgery.India also provides cosmetic surgery for other Europeans and Americans, and it is likely that NDM-1 will spread worldwide,said the study, published in the British medical journal The Lancet.
NDM-1 was mostly found in E. coli, a common source of community-acquired urinary tract infections, and K. pneumoniae, and was impervious to all antibiotics except two, tigecycline and colistin.In some cases, even these drugs did not beat back the infection.Crucially, the NDM-1 gene was found on DNA structures, called plasmids, that can be easily copied and transferred between bacteria, giving the bug an alarming potential to spread and diversify,the authors said.Unprecedented air travel and migration allow bacterial plasmids and clones to be transported rapidly between countries and continents,mostly undetected, they said.The emergence of these new drug-resistant strains could become a serious global public health problem as the major threat shifts toward a broad class of bacteria -- including those armed with the NDM-1 gene -- known as Gram-negative, the researchers warn.There are few new anti-Gram-negative antibiotics in development, and none that are effective against NDM-1,the study said.NDM-1 stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1.Johann Pitout from the University of Calgary in Canada said patients who have medical procedures in India should be screened for multi-resistant bacteria before they receive care in their home country.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the organization's emergency committee of top flu experts advised her that the pandemic had largely run its course and the world is no longer in phase six — the highest influenza alert level.I fully agree with the committee's advice, Chan told reporters in a telephone briefing from her native Hong Kong.The virus has now entered the post-pandemic phase, meaning disease activity around the world has returned to levels usually seen for seasonal influenza, she said.But Chan cautioned against complacency, saying that even though hospitalizations and deaths have dropped sharply, countries should still keep a watchful eye for unusual patterns of infection and mutations that might render existing vaccines and antiviral drugs ineffective.It is likely that the virus will continue to cause serious disease in younger age groups,she said, urging high-risk groups such as pregnant women to continue seeking vaccination.Unusually, swine flu hits young adults harder than the over-65s, who are believed to have some immunity to the A(H1N1) strain.At least 18,449 people have died worldwide since the outbreak began in April 2009. WHO, which received at least $170 million from member states to deal with the pandemic, said last week that the true death toll is likely to be higher. But the organization's flu chief, Keiji Fukuda, said a final number won't be known for some months.Still, lab-confirmed deaths globally increased by only about 300 in the past two months and many countries have long since closed the chapter on swine flu.
Governments in Europe and North America started dumping vaccines earlier this year after finding their stocks were full of unused and expiring supplies.The United States stopped classifying swine flu as a public health emergency in June, while health authorities in Britain shut down their pandemic flu hot line in February and later canceled vaccine a third of vaccine orders as it became clear the pandemic strain would be less dangerous than feared. Worst-case scenarios had predicted up to 65,000 deaths in Britain. In the end there were 457 confirmed deaths from swine flu.
In Germany, authorities are meeting later this week to discuss who is going to pick up the bill for the 34 million doses of vaccines that were ordered and mostly not used.A report by the French Senate published last month criticized WHO's handling of the pandemic, in particularly what it described as an overestimation of the risk and insufficient transparency about links between WHO experts and the pharmaceutical industry.In January, polls showed 70 percent of French population thought the government overestimated the danger of the virus H1N1 and ordered too many doses of vaccine. The government had purchased 94 millions doses of vaccine, but canceled half of the initial order at the start of the year.WHO chief Chan insisted that declaring swine flu a pandemic had been the right decision, based on the internationally agreed rules that existed at the time.We have been aided by pure good luck, she said, adding that if the virus had mutated then the death rate could have been much higher. In some countries as many as two in five people are now immune to swine flu, she said.But Chan acknowledged that changes may be made to the way WHO defines pandemics. We need to review the phases, including the severity, she said.Prof. Angus Nicoll, flu program coordinator at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said the decision to declare the pandemic over was consistent with the Stockholm-based body's recent findings.
While flu activity in the northern hemisphere is seasonally low, monitoring in southern hemisphere countries shows that few people are falling seriously ill from swine flu, said Nicoll. Local spikes in flu deaths, such as seen recently in India, are likely due to better surveillance, he said. Nevertheless, health officials around the world should prepare for a new type of seasonal flu to appear in the near future that will combine elements of the pandemic A(H1N1) strain, and older A(H3N2) strain and several lesser strains, said Nicoll. It looks sort of middle of the road at the moment,he said. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said even though swine flu turned out milder than expected, officials have gained valuable insights into how to deal with a pandemic flu outbreak. The most important lesson learned from this experience is the critical need for new influenza manufacturing processes, said HHS spokesman Bill Hall.Chan, in her exchange with journalists, also raised the specter of deadlier flu pandemics in future.Lurking in the background we still have H5N1, she said, a reference to the bird flu strain that has infected 503 people over seven years, killing 299.Associated Press writers Daphne Rousseau in Paris, Kirsten Grieshaber in Berlin and AP medical writer Maria Cheng in London contributed to this report.

STOCKHOLM – An island of ice more than four times the size of Manhattan is drifting across the Arctic Ocean after breaking off from a glacier in Greenland.Potentially in the path of this unstoppable giant are oil platforms and shipping lanes — and any collision could do untold damage. In a worst case scenario, large chunks could reach the heavily trafficked waters where another Greenland iceberg sank the Titanic in 1912.It's been a summer of near biblical climatic havoc across the planet, with wildfires, heat and smog in Russia and killer floods in Asia. But the moment the Petermann glacier cracked last week — creating the biggest Arctic ice island in half a century — may symbolize a warming world like no other.It's so big that you can't prevent it from drifting. You can't stop it, said Jon-Ove Methlie Hagen, a glaciologist at the University of Oslo.Few images can capture the world's climate fears like a 100-square- mile (260-sqare-kilometer) chunk of ice breaking off Greenland's vast ice sheet, a reservoir of freshwater that if it collapsed would raise global sea levels by a devastating 20 feet (6 meters).
The world's newest ice island already is being used as a powerful emblem in the global warming debate, with U.S. Rep. Edward Markey of Massachusetts suggesting it could serve as a home for climate change skeptics.Researchers are in a scramble to plot the trajectory of the floating ice shelf, which is moving toward the Nares Strait separating Greenland's northwestern coast and Canada's Ellsemere Island.If it makes it into the strait before the winter freeze — due to start next month — it would likely be carried south by ocean currents, hugging Canada's east coast until it enters waters busy with oil activities and shipping off Newfoundland.That's where it starts to become dangerous,said Mark Drinkwater, of the European Space Agency.The Canadian Ice Service estimates the journey will take one to two years. It's likely to break up as it bumps into other icebergs and jagged islands. The fragments would be further ground down by winds and waves and would start to melt as they move into warmer waters.But the fragments may still be quite large, warned Trudy Wohlleben, a Canadian ice forecaster, who first spotted the massive chunk of ice on satellite images last Thursday.The chunks of ice could be large enough to threaten Canada's offshore platforms in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, said Wohlleben.And, while it's possible to redirect smaller icebergs, by towing them or spraying them with water cannons,I don't think they could do that with an iceberg this large, she said. They would have to physically move the rig.Moving an offshore platform is time-consuming and expensive and very complicated in cases where they are fixed to the ocean floor.While Greenland's glaciers break off thousands of icebergs into Arctic waters every year, scientists say this ice island is the biggest in the northern hemisphere since 1962.
It contains enough freshwater to keep the Hudson River flowing for more than two years, said Andreas Muenchow of the University of Delaware.The drifting ice sheet is likely to remain at the heart of the global warming discussion during its journey.
While experts say it's difficult to directly tie the giant ice island to climate change because there are so many factors that affect glaciers in the area, the unusual event coincides with worrisome signs of warming in the Arctic. Since 1970, temperatures have risen more than 4.5 degrees (2.5 degrees C) in much of the Arctic — much faster than the global average. In June the Arctic sea ice cover was at the lowest level for that month since records began in 1979, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The retreat of Greenland's glaciers, which has accelerated in recent years, is one of the least understood pieces of the climate puzzle.A team of climate scientists who visited the Petermann glacier last year, expecting it to crack then, is now planning another trip within weeks.We did leave behind a couple of time-lapse cameras and 11 GPS (devices). Now we are scrambling to get up there and recover the data,said Jason Box, an expert on Greenland glaciers from the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University. Box and two British researchers traveled to the glacier last year with Greenpeace activists who offered space aboard their ship, the Arctic Sunrise, to scientists studying climate change.They were hoping to capture the event with cameras rolling, which would have been a powerful image just months before the Copenhagen climate talks that failed to produce a binding treaty to reduce heat-trapping gas emissions.
It would have been nice if it had broken off last year,said Melanie Duchin, who led that Greenpeace expedition. I mean ice melting, it doesn't get any simpler than that.
Still, she finds it ironic that the Petermann breakup coincides with another catastrophe linked to fossil fuels.
