Ambassadors Ask UN to Recognize Yom Kippur as Official Holiday-United Nations ambassadors from 32 countries asked that Yom Kippur be recognized as an official UN holiday.By Hillel Fendel-First Publish: 10/4/2014, 10:30 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Ambassadors to the United Nations from no fewer than 32 countries have asked that Yom Kippur be recognized as an official UN holiday. The UN currently marks 10 holidays, but none of them are Jewish. Among the recognized holidays are Christmas and Good Friday (Christian) and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (Muslim). The 32 ambassadors wrote a letter to the General Assembly this past July, JNS.org reports, requesting that Yom Kippur – an annual day with a "universal" message – be added to the list. The letter described the messages of Yom Kippur as follows: “Every person’s deeds are weighed on the heavenly scales of justice and the blessings of the coming year are determined by the good deeds performed in the service of others." The ambassadors wrote that these messages deserve to be marked by the United Nations. The idea was first launched by Israeli Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor this past May. He sent his own letter to his 192 UN ambassadorial colleagues, asking them to join Israel’s campaign to have the holiday recognized. This would not only "upgrade" the status of the Jewish Day of Atonement internationally, but would also allow Jewish UN employees to have a day off on the holy day.Several major Jewish organizations and leaders are also advocating for the cause. B’nai B’rith International Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin co-wrote a New York Times op-ed in favor of the campaign in August. The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and the World Jewish Congress have also come out in favor.Appropriately, a key prayer in the Yom Kippur liturgy states, "Place Your fear, our G-d, upon all Your creations… and all should be in awe of You… Let them all become one union to do Your will whole-heartedly."

Yom Kippur Ends; Preparations for Sukkot Begin-Hundreds of thousands of Jews attended prayer services in synagogues and fasted on the Day of Atonement.By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 10/4/2014, 7:14 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Hundreds of thousands of Jews attended prayer services in synagogues in Israel and fasted on the Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement. According to polls held in previous years, the proportion of Israeli Jews who fast on Yom Kippur is between 65% and 75%.For the less religiously observant Israelis, the day is one spent with the family and with books, on which there is no television or internet, and no traffic on the streets except for children on bicycles.Preparations are now beginning for the Sukkot holiday, which begins Wednesday evening. The coming days will see thousands of sukkot – improvised huts with palm fronds and other leafy branches as roofing – being erected from Eilat to the northern tip of the Golan, throughout the Promised Land. The Tzohar Rabbis organization conducted about 250 prayer quorums on Yom Kippur, with the participation of over 40,000 people.

Sweden breaks EU ranks to recognise Palestine-03.10.14 @ 18:49-EUOBSERVER-By Andrew Rettman

BRUSSELS - The new left-wing government in Sweden has promised to recognise Palestine, amid EU criticism of Israel’s latest settlement expansion. The Swedish PM, Stefan Lofven, made the pledge at his inauguration speech in parliament on Friday (3 October).“The conflict between Israel and Palestine can only be solved by a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law. It must guarantee both the Palestinians and Israelis' legitimate demands for national sovereignty and security”, he said.“A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognise the state of Palestine”.The step is the first ever by a sitting member of the EU.Six former Communist EU countries, as well as Cyprus and Malta, recognised Palestine in the 1980s before they joined the European Union. But their pre-EU policies have little meaning today: When Palestine asked the UN in 2012 to recognise it as an “observer state” the Czech Republic was the only EU country which voted No despite recognising its sovereignty in 1988.Fourteen others voted in favour, while the rest abstained in a sign of ongoing division in the bloc.Lofven’s announcement caught both Swedish and EU diplomats by surprise.A Swedish source told this website it “marks a really big shift in the Social-Democratic party”. An EU contact said Palestine has stepped up its “lobbying campaign” in Europe: “They had hoped that France would take the step after [Palestinian] president Abbas visited Paris last month, but this didn’t happen”.The Swedish move came the same day the EU published a statement criticising Israel’s plan to build thousands of new settler homes in East Jerusalem. The EU communique used forceful language - “condemned” - and said “development of relations between the EU and Israel will depend on the latter's engagement towards a lasting peace”.Some analysts saw it as a sign of impending action. But the EU contact said it is not. “The wording is not new and was taken from recent [EU] Council conclusions”, he said. The European Commission is currently drafting a code for EU retail labels on settler exports, but the work is still ongoing. It recently banned exports of settler milk and poultry products saying Israeli food safety authorities, which certify the goods, have no jurisdiction in Palestine. But this is part of a tidying-up process of existing EU law rather than a political sanction. The new settlements mark the first expansion in East Jerusalem for more than 10 years. The EU source said one set of settler homes, in Silwan, is “very sensitive” because it is in the Holy Basin - a part of the old city which hosts Jewish and Muslim sacred sites.A second bloc, in Givat Hamatos, “greatly diminishes” prospects of a two-state solution because it helps enclose Jerusalem, which is claimed by both sides as their capital, in a ring of Jewish-only suburbs.

Netanyahu to Sweden: Unilateral Moves Won't Work-PM Netanyahu responds to Sweden's announcement it would recognize "Palestine", says unilateral moves will not bring peace.By Hezki Ezra-First Publish: 10/6/2014, 1:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had a message for Sweden on Sunday, a day after Sweden’s Prime Minister said his country would recognize the “state of Palestine.”Netanyahu clarified that unilateral actions will only reduce the chances of reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA)."Unilateral measures are contrary to agreements. They will not bring peace closer, they only move it further away, he said, adding, "An agreement will only be achieved in negotiations that will ensure Israel's national interests and, first and foremost, the security of Israeli citizens.”Sweden’s announcement on Saturday raised the ire of Israel and the United States, and Israel said it would summon Sweden's ambassador to Israel over the move.On Sunday, however, Sweden effectively retracted the statement from Saturday."The prime minister said that the conflict between Israel and Palestine can be solved through the two-state solution, by negotiations in accordance with the principles of international law,” the Swedish Embassy in Israel said in a statement. The solution “must guarantee the legitimate demands of both Palestinians and Israelis, to self-determination and security. The two-state solution requires mutual recognition and the will to live together in peace. The prime minister summed up by saying that as a result, Sweden would recognize the Palestinian state,” the statement added.

Netanyahu: Criticism of Construction is Against American Values-In CBS interview, Prime Minister Netanyahu says he is "baffled" by U.S. condemnation of Israeli plans to build in Jerusalem.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/6/2014, 3:45 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in an interview which aired Sunday on CBS that the White House’s rebuke of Israeli construction in Jerusalem goes “against American values”.In the interview, which was recorded on Thursday and of which excerpts were quoted by The Associated Press (AP), Netanyahu said he did not accept restrictions on where Jews could live, and said that Jerusalem’s Arabs and Jews should be able to buy homes wherever they want.He said he was “baffled” by the American condemnation.“It’s against the American values. And it doesn’t bode well for peace,” Netanyahu told CBS. “The idea that we’d have this ethnic purification as a condition for peace, I think it’s anti-peace.”The recently backlash against Israel is mainly over a plan to build 2,610 new homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Givat Hamatos. The housing units were slated for construction since 2012 and were given final approval last week.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki criticized the move, using unusually harsh language in doing so.She said the step would send a “troubling message” and added the construction would “poison the atmosphere not only with the Palestinians but also with the very Arab governments with which Prime Minister Netanyahu said he wanted to build relations.”Netanyahu later fired back at the United States’ criticism, telling NBC News' Andrea Mitchell that the U.S. should study the facts before it criticizes Israel over its construction."I think the important thing is to just get the facts right. I mean start with the facts," he told Mitchell.Psaki later rejected Netanyahu’s claims, saying, “I think we have our information clear, and we responded to the facts on the ground.”The White House declined to comment on Netanyahu’s statements in the CBS interview, noted AP.In the same interview, Netanyahu warned that the “Islamic State” (ISIS), Hamas and Iran are locked in a competition to become the dominant Islamist power in the Middle East, which threatens both the United States and Israel."ISIS has got to be defeated because it's doing what all these militant Islamists are trying to do. They all want to first dominate their part of the Middle East, and then go on for their twisted idea of world domination," he said."The difference between ISIS and Hamas and ISIS and Iran and so on is they all agree that the world should be an Islamist hill, but ... each of them wants to be the king of the hill," he added."They want to accumulate enough power to then carry out their mad ambitions," said Netanyahu. The Israeli prime minister also warned in the interview about what he believes are the dangers of making a deal on nuclear capabilities with Iran."This is the greatest terrorist regime in the world. And we don't want them to have the ultimate weapon of terror, which is nuclear weapons. My fear is that they would get the ability to enrich enough uranium for a bomb in a very short time, weeks, months, and that's the deal that I hope is not signed," Netanyahu said.He said that such a deal would be bad for both the U.S. and Israel because Iran will not allow inspectors into the state and will exploit a time of crisis around the world to enrich enough material for a bomb that can be taken out of Iran by ship."I think it would endanger the future of our common civilization," he said of Iran, or a power like ISIS, gaining a nuclear weapon."The greatest danger that I see from these militant Islamists is that they will marry their mad ideologies to weapons of mass death. That is a threat not only to my people, the Jewish people and the Jewish state of Israel, but to your people. They view us as one because of our tolerant societies, whom they think is weak and corrupt," he said.

Over One Million People Visit Western Wall Over High Holidays-Huge crowds visit Jewish holy site in ten days between Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur.By Haim Lev and Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 10/5/2014, 3:38 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

More than a million people visited the Western Wall to ask for Divine mercy and forgiveness during the ten-day High Holiday period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it was announced Sunday. At its peak, over 100,000 people - from across Israel and around the globe - attended the holy site in one night alone: during selichot prayers on Yom Kippur Eve.The central selichot prayer was attended by both Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi David Lau. An additional assembly started by Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef zt"l includes a mass prayer rally for selichot at the Wall, followed by a ceremony to annul "evil decrees" for the upcoming year. The ceremony attracted at least 100,000 people as well. The large turnout is significant for Israel, which has suffered a fall in tourism following the Gaza war in July and August. The Israeli economy emerged relatively unscathed, however, and tourism figures look likely to bounce back. Israel has seen a record number of travelers to the Jewish state for the holidays, with an estimated 1.4 million people due to visit between Rosh Hashanah and the holiday of Sukkot.

PA Ambassador: If Our UN Bid is Rejected, We'll Go to ICC-PA's UN ambassador: We will join the ICC if the Security Council refuses to set a deadline for Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria.-By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 10/3/2014, 6:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The Palestinian Authority’s (PA) UN ambassador, Riyad Mansour, threatened on Thursday that his government will join the International Criminal Court (ICC) if the UN Security Council refuses to set a deadline for Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria.According to The Associated Press (AP), Mansour said the PA turned to the Security Council "to force Israel to negotiate in good faith the end of occupation within a time frame."He added that PA hopes the Security Council will adopt a draft resolution, the contents of which were exposed Wednesday, that would set a deadline of November 2016 for an Israeli pullout from Judea, Samaria, Gaza and eastern Jerusalem, with a goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel."But if this additional door of peace is closed before us, then we will not only join the ICC to seek accountability," Mansour said in an interview with AP."We will join other treaties and agencies" to build evidence "that we exist as a nation, we exist as a state although the land of our state is under occupation," he declared. After the collapse the last U.S.-led talks earlier this year, Mansour said the Palestinians believe it is "futile" to go back to "the old-style negotiations that led to failure."He told AP that the Palestinians hope that under Security Council pressure, Israel will negotiate by agreeing on final status issues, starting with setting borders based on lines predating the 1967 Six Day War, with minor adjustments. If the council resolution is vetoed and the PA joins the International Criminal Court, it would also open the door to war crime charges against Palestinian Arabs, but Mansour told AP that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has made clear that the Palestinians are prepared to be held accountable by the world's war crimes tribunal for any wrongdoing."But it is obvious that the one who is extremely afraid of this option is the Israelis, and those who are protecting the Israelis," the ambassador said. The PA has been threatening for years that it will sue Israel at the ICC. The PA’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, recently met with ICC officials and inquired about the legal procedures necessary for the PA to join the ICC and sign the Rome Statute, thus allowing it to take action against possible Israeli war crimes in Gaza. That move came after the PA requested to join 15 international agencies in breach of the conditions of the peace talks that were going on with Israel at that time.A senior PA official recently said, however, that Abbas had blocked the initiative to turn to the ICC in order to push forward a new peace talks bid.
