A group of concerned Christians is calling on Facebook to remove a
page that promotes the notion that the Virgin Mary of the Bible should
have received an abortion. Titled “Virgin Mary Should’ve Aborted,”
the administrator of the page claims to “explain what really happened
in the biblical times, since the bible is full of lies.”With just
over 5,000 "likes," Celene Schartner of Australia says the page not
only demeans what Christians believe but is slanderous and hateful. It
diminishes the right to life of every unborn infant in its mother’s womb
by its very title and statement.“Many Christians worldwide are
so distressed at the attempts to diminish Christian values and the
slanderous attacks on the Bible,” Schartner says. “If people don’t
believe, that’s their choice, but they need to learn respect for the
choices of others.”Schartner encourages others to join the protest by signing a petition that
encourages the popular social media site to ban the page. As of the
time of this release, more than 15,000 concerned Christians have signed
the petition.
“I would never demean another Christian’s faith or
presume I have the right to do so, regardless of what they believe,”

Over ten thousand Israelis have signed up for a pilot project that provides them with a “smart” Israeli identity card
that includes biometric information. The project is now operating in
over a dozen cities, and is currently voluntary, although it is likely
to become mandatory in the future.The
project opened about a month ago, and so far the response to it has
been very positive and welcome, said Population Authority officials.
Residents of the thirteen towns where the program is currently
operating can go to their local Population Registry offices, submit
their fingerprints and have their photos taken by a special camera that will analyze their facial characteristics, and be issued a smart identity card. More cities are to be added in the coming weeks, and by the end of the year the program will be operating in 28 cities.The benefit for Israelis, according to the Interior Ministry, is that they will receive an identity card that will be next to impossible to duplicate, and will put a stop to instances of identity theft and fake ID cards.According to the Ministry, tens of thousands of illegal workers and
illegal PA Arabs are using phony ID cards, either totally fabricated or
using real information about Israelis. Over 130,000 ID cards are lost or
stolen each year, the Ministry said, constituting a major security
threat that can be solved by the biometric cards.The new program is voluntary, and is a pilot program designed to
allow officials to determine if there are any problems with the
biometric system. The program has been a controversial one; the law
authorizing implementation of the biometric database was passed in 2009,
but was challenged immediately by activists and privacy groups, as well
as numerous MKs.
Among the reasons for opposition to the program, which will gather
intimate details on Israelis, is the possibility that the data could be
stolen, or even worse, used by the government to impose controls on individuals by limiting their access to services, and tracking them using biometric information.“The information is well protected and will prevent identity theft,”
Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar said. Regarding the fears that the
information could be used in a negative manner, Sa'ar said that “there
is no basis for the panic that has taken hold of some. The numbers of
those requesting the cards is evidence of the faith the public has in
the program, and its understanding the great need to defend individuals
against identity theft and to ensure that we remain at the forefront of
technology,”Disagreeing with Sa'ar was Labor Party head MK Shelly Yechimovich,
who said that implementation of the program would cause “irreversible
damage” to Israel. “You can cancel credit cards that have been stolen,
you can change a password that has been compromised, but you cannot
change your fingerprints and face,” she said, pointing out the risks in
holding such information in a database that would be a major attraction
for hackers. “We all know that it is just a matter of time before
corporations or hostile forces get hold of this information. The
information will no doubt be used in a negative manner and will endanger
many Israelis, such as IDF soldiers who will also have to give over
their details in the program.”

that it appears as though Netanyahu “has agreed to officially give away
sovereignty of the Temple Mount to the Muslims as part of an agreement
which is being prepared behind our backs.”He called on
other MKs, in the Likud and in the Bayit Yehudi, to stand up and take
action in order to restore Israel’s sovereignty on the Temple Mount, by
voting against the coalition, as he had done with the budget.Langfan, who put together a series of maps explaining the dangers of Israel giving away parts of Judea and Samaria to the Arabs, told Arutz Sheva that a safe Israel means a safe America.“Israel is

civilization,” he warned.

Israel will not sign agreements
with the European Union until the EU “clarifies” its new regulations,
according to which no Israeli body that operates or is based beyond the
Green Line can be party to the agreements.
The
move may threaten Israel’s participation in the EU’s massive Horizon
2020 program to promote scientific research and development.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a
special meeting with relevant ministers Thursday to discuss the matter.
Attendees included Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Justice Minister Tzipi
Livni, Education Minister Shai Piron, Economy and Trade Minister Naftali
Bennett, Science Minister Yaakov Peri, Agriculture Minister Yair Shamir
and Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin.The ministers “did not make a decision
specific to Horizon 2020,” a government source told The Times of Israel
on Thursday, “but they all agreed that the new EU guidelines are
detrimental to the possible success of the peace talks with the
Palestinians.”The ministers also agreed that “Israel will be
unable to sign additional agreements [with the EU] that include the
stipulations the EU is demanding. The government of Israel will seek
clarifications from the EU regarding the territorial clause,” the
official said.Despite heavy criticism from Israel, the
European Union will not cancel, modify or delay the implementation of
the recently published guidelines that block EU funding from Israeli
institutions either located or maintaining any links beyond the Green
Line, a top EU official said this week.“The guidelines will take effect as they are.
This is how they were published [in the EU’s Official Journal], as a
legal act, and that’s how it will be,” Ambassador Andreas Reinicke, the
EU’s special representative to the Middle East peace process, told The
Times of Israel last week. In certain areas where the guidelines are
still unclear, “a closer look” at the details might be have to be taken,
he allowed. But their main points will not be changed and will take
effect by January 2014 as planned.
The EU’s directive, published last month,
mandates a denial of European funding to, and cooperation with, Israeli
institutions based or operating over the Green Line, and a requirement
that all future agreements between Israel and the EU include a clause in
which Israel accepts the position that all territory over the Green
Line does not belong to Israel.The exact formulation of this so-called
territorial clause has yet to be determined and will likely be the
subject of heated discussions between Israeli and European officials.
Brussels is also determined to introduce a labeling plan for settlement products by the end of 2013.Academics warn that if Israel opted out of
Horizon 2020, the negative impact on the country’s scientific standing
would be “devastating.”

Civil Administration on Wednesday authorized construction of 878
housing units in Judea and Samaria. The units were approved for towns in
the Binyamin region, the Jordan Valley, and Gush Etzion, Ha'aretz reported Thursday.The
approvals had been set to be issued several weeks ago, but were
postponed due to the efforts to restart negotiations with the
Palestinian Authority. Those talks hinged on the release of Arab
terrorists from Israeli prisons, government minister Silvan Shalom said in an interview on Israel Radio Sunday.According
to Shalom, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was prepared to offer them
a building freeze in Judea and Samaria – but the PA rejected that
offer, demanding that the terrorists be released instead. The first
group of terrorists is set to be released next week, as talks between
Israeli and PA officials get underway in Washington.Construction was approved for 112 new homes
in the Binyamin community of Shilo, 559 units in Talmon (north of
Modiin), 38 in Kochav Yaakov (northeast of Jerusalem), and 31 in Alon
Shvut (in Gush Etzion). Most of the homes were set to be built in
communities outside what are termed the “settlement blocs” that are
encompassed by the security fence, that the government has said that it does not plan to surrender to the PA under any circumstances.The
Civil Administration's approval is the second in a long list of
approval processes construction projects in Judea and Samaria must go
through before any actual construction begins. Once approved by the
Civil Administration's higher planning committee – the body that gave
its approval Wednesday – projects must pass through an environmental
committee and a legal committee, and are subject to legal challenges,
usually in the form of High Court
petitions, by PA residents and Israeli leftwing groups. Finally, the
projects must be personally approved by Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Skeptics have accused Netanyahu of implementing a “silent” building
freeze in Judea and Samaria, as there is little actual building going
on. The fact that the PA rejected
Israel's offer for a building freeze did not mean that there would not
actually be a freeze, the skeptics said. “We know that the PA accepts
any Israeli offer as a fait accompli, even if they themselves reject
those offers,” said one source. “It's a fact that the PA has demanded
the concessions made by Israel in previous negotiations as a starting
point for new ones, even if they themselves rejected those concessions.There's no reason to believe that this
situation is any different,” said the source. “That they put some of
these towns on a 'national priority list' for housing is fine, but if no
building is approved and there is in effect a 'silent freeze,' it's
just adding insult to injury to say that these places now have
'priority' over others.” But Dani Dayan, chief foreign envoy for
the Yesha Council, which represents the Jewish communities of Judea and
Samaria, was cautiously optimistic."The Yesha Council welcomes the long overdue decision to foster natural development in a number of communities in Judea and Samaria with the preliminary advancement of building permits.""This is not a dramatic change of
policy," he added, "but it stresses the obvious fact that the 368,000
Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria are a living, breathing reality
with rights and needs that can not and should not be ignored.”

Two blasts that wounded four Israeli soldiers on the border with Lebanon were in fact an "ambush" set by Hizbullah, the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar reported on Thursday.
The explosions hit the patrol on Wednesday when the troops crossed
the border into southern Lebanon, parts of which are controlled by the
Shiite movement."The enemy blundered when they violated the border with Lebanon, and
fell into a trap that only the resistance could set," said the
newspaper, which has links to Hizbullah."Only Hizbullah can make bombs that blow up Israelis" when they pass by, it said.Hizbullah, which has close ties to Iran
and the regime in Syria, is considered Israel's arch-foe, and the two
fought a brief but bloody summer war in 2006.
"The Israeli unit fell into a well-set ambush and the enemy found
itself faced with a difficult question: 'How did Hizbullah know we were
there?'" the daily wrote."The ambush is a dangerous failure for the enemy because it shows
that Hizbullah has an intelligence structure that allows it to know when
a patrol arrives, its route and to set a trap for it," it added.“That means the resistance is prepared for every eventuality, in case

Japan Unveils the Izumo, Its Largest Warship Since WWII, Amid Tensions With China
On Aug. 6, Japan launched its largest warship since World War II
in a fresh demonstration of Tokyo’s steadily expanding naval
capabilities. The unveiling of the destroyer — with a conspicuously
large flight deck — has drawn attention from its neighbors, especially
longstanding regional rival China, which in the past decade has embarked on a massive program of military modernization.Japan’s pacifist constitution, which was largely drafted by the U.S.
after the war, renounces the use of force for purposes other than
self-defense. That means the country has no offensive arsenal of
long-range missiles, aircraft carriers or similar weapons of aggression.
The Izumo, which can be used to launch helicopters, still doesn’t cross
the line, the Japanese government says. But the almost 20,000-ton
vessel is capable of carrying up to fourteen helicopters, with a maximum
of five taking off and landing at once according to Bloomberg.
It’s set to be deployed by March of 2015. Tokyo says that the Izumo
cannot carry planes, since it lacks the catapults necessary for seaborne
take-off. Instead, officials maintain that the carrier will be used for
disaster and rescue missions — in the aftermath of a tsunami, perhaps —
as well as for responding to “various contingencies in waters near
Japan,” reports broadcaster NHK.But Chinese officials, who remain cognizant of Japan’s savage
invasion and occupation of China some seven decades ago, say they aren’t
fooled. The helicopter carrier could be easily retrofitted for fighter
jet capability, Zhang Junshe, a senior researcher at the People’s
Liberation Army Naval Military Studies Research Institute, told the
state-run China Daily.
“It is an aircraft carrier, and Japan just called it a helicopter
destroyer to downplay its aggressive nature,” he said. (China recently
debuted its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning,a refurbished
Soviet-era vessel.)In recent years, territorial disputes between Japan and China have
flared over uninhabited islands that Tokyo administers but Beijing
claims. The return to power of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who
campaigned on a nationalist platform, and the rise of Xi Jinping,
China’s new patriotically minded President, have further heightened
distrust between the world’s second and third largest economies.The Chinese remain aggrieved that Tokyo has, to this day, only
offered fumbling apologies for the savage bloodshed inflicted during
World War II (apologies that are then undermined by the unrepentant
utterances of Japanese right-wingers). Japan meanwhile frets over
China’s increasing regional assertiveness as the budding global power
flexes new muscles in the neighborhood. Tokyo’s response has been to
place a new emphasis on its military capacity. In January, the country boosted
its defense spending for the first time in a decade, albeit by 0.8%.
Japan is also considering whether to ease restrictions on the use of its
military, which is currently barred by the constitution from almost all
activities but national defense. China’s 2013 military spending, revealed in March, increased by 10.7% over the last year, although foreign analysts believe the hike may be even higher.The spats between the two countries have stoked public sentiment on either side. A survey published Aug. 5 by Genron NPO, a Japanese think tank, and China Daily
found that more than 90% of Japanese and Chinese citizens had
unfavorable views of the other country. Last year, 64.5% of Chinese
citizens reported unfavorable feelings toward Japan, while 84.3% of
Japanese felt the same way of their neighbors to the west.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrian rebels said they fired rockets
and mortar rounds on Thursday that hit an upscale district of Damascus
where President Bashar Assad attended prayers to mark the start of a
major Muslim holiday in a rare attack in the high security area.At
least two Syrian rebel brigades claimed they hit Assad's motorcade in
the Malki district of the capital, but Syrian state TV broadcast images
of the Syrian leader attending prayers and the information minister
denied reports that the president had been attacked.
However, it was not possible to determine if the footage of Assad praying was filmed before or after the attack.Assad
has a residence and an office in the upscale district, which has
largely been sheltered from the shelling and battles that usually rage
in the city's impoverished suburbs. It was not clear if Assad has stayed
in Malki in recent months.This was the Syrian leader's third
public appearance in over a week as his regime tries to capitalize on
recent gains on the battlefield against rebels fighting to oust him from
power.Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi dismissed the attack
claims as "rumors" and told state TV that Assad drove his own car to the
Anas bin Malik Mosque, located in the heart of Malki.In the
state TV broadcast, Assad, dressed in a suit, was seen praying alongside
Syria's grand mufti at the start of Eid al-Fitr, the three-day holiday
that ends the holy month of Ramadan. The Eid prayers are typically an
hour or two after sunrise. In previous years, Assad has been seen
attending them early in the morning.The Britain-based Observatory
for Human Rights, which closely monitors the fighting in Syria, said
only three mortar shells hit Malki early in the morning. The
neighborhood has rarely been targeted by opposition forces during the
conflict that only last year saw the rebels bring their battle to the
heart of the capital.There were no immediate reports of
casualties or damage in the shelling, which was confirmed by Malki
residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing for their own
safety.Rami Abdul-Rahman, the Observatory's head, said he had no
confirmation that Assad's motorcade had been hit and was skeptical of
the reports.An Islamic rebel brigade, Liwaa Tahrir al-Sham, said
it fired several 120 mm shells in the direction of Assad's motorcade
after carrying out careful surveillance of its route.The claim
was made on the group's Facebook and Twitter pages and could not be
independently confirmed. The brigade's head, Firas al-Bitar, told
Al-Arabiya TV that the motorcade had been hit but that it was not
certain whether Assad himself had been harmed.Capt. Islam Alloush
of the Liwa al-Islam, another rebel brigade, also claimed
responsibility, saying there were casualties among Assad's entourage. He
said they carried out the attack separately and without coordinating
with Tahrir al-Sham brigade.Alloush
told The Associated Press that Assad was not hit but claimed several
people within his entourage were killed or wounded. He claimed the
footage aired on Syrian TV showing Assad praying at the mosque may have
been pre-recorded or fabricated."We had promised the Syrian people a big operation for Eid and we have delivered," he said.There
was no way to verify the authenticity of the claims. Rebels have
claimed attacks against Assad or members of his government in the past
that turned out to be false.
Syria's state news agency said
several mortar shells also hit the capital's suburb that is home to the
golden-domed Shiite shrine of Sayeda Zeinab, killing five people and
injuring 12 others. The shrine, located just a few kilometers (miles)
southeast of Damascus is named after the Prophet Muhammad's
granddaughter. The shrine is popular with Iranian worshippers and
tourists.Meanwhile, the leader of Syria's exiled opposition
coalition attended holiday prayers in the southern province of Daraa on
Thursday, his second trip inside the country since he was elected head
of the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition last month.The
coalition's spokeswoman, Sarah Karkour confirmed the rare foray into
Syria by the opposition leader Ahmad al-Jarba, but did not say in which
mosque in Daraa he prayed. In a video, posted on the Internet by the
coalition, al-Jarba, dressed in a suit, is seen talking to people,
surrounded by unarmed rebels wearing fatigues.Syrian uprising
started in Daraa in March 2011 as protests against Assad rule. The
largely peaceful revolt turned into a civil war after opposition
supporters took up arms to fight a brutal government crackdown. More
than 100,000 people have been killed in the violence in the conflict.Assad's
troops have recently been on the offensive in central Syria, making
advances near the border with Lebanon and in the city of Homs, an
opposition stronghold and Syria's third largest city. They've also been
fighting pockets of resistance around the capital, Damascus, to fortify
the seat of Assad's power there, and fought rebels in Daraa to the
south, near the border with Jordan.On Wednesday, Syrian
government troops ambushed a large group of rebels trudging through a
desert road northeast of Damascus, killing more than 60 fighters.
In
the north, where much of the territory has been under opposition
control in the past year, rebels scored a rare victory earlier this week
when they captured a major air base in the Aleppo province near the
border with Turkey.Syria's crisis started as a largely peaceful uprising against Assad's rule in March 2011
