Giant defence merger faces hurdles in Britain, France and Germany

BRUSSELS - State control and European-based jobs are the main sticking points in a planned merger of Eads, the Franco-German company producing Airbus planes and BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence contractor.The British parliament on Monday (24 September) launched an inquiry into the would-be €35-billion-merger to create the world's largest defence and civil aviation firm."The merger of two such large defence contractors would have a significant and strategic impact on their relationships with UK, US and European governments. It could also radically alter the defence industrial base in these countries," said the defence committee in the British parliament, according to the Telegraph.After announcing the merger plan last month, the two companies have until 10 October to table a formal proposal for the deal.But with France and Germany also signaling unease about the plan, the companies are expected to arrange an extension to the deadline.A German document, seen by Reuters, lays out the worries of the economy ministry about possible takeovers and job losses in Germany.Similar concerns have been voiced in France, where the state wants to retain control over the future defence giant.Eads and BAE Systems have promised the governments of France, Germany and the UK a "golden share" in the new entity which could be used to block any potential future takeovers.But both Berlin and Paris are sceptical about the prospects of the legal brake, which has been struck down in previous merger cases in EU courts.With some 50,000 Eads employees in Germany alone, possible job losses are also of concern, despite assurances by the two companies that the link-up would not see cuts to staff.Meanwhile, Berlin is unhappy with plans to value Eads at 60 percent of the new company, saying the figure should be closer to 70 percent.The British government is concerned that too much Franco-German control over the new company could jeopardise BAE Systems' contracts with the Pentagon.The British firm supplies parts to the F-35 fighter jet produced by Lockheed Martin and more than 60,000 cockpit and cabin parts to Boeing, Airbus' US competitor.Eads chief executive Tom Enders will appear before German parliament on Wednesday to defend the plans.The same day, defence ministers from Germany, France and UK are expected to discuss the matter at an EU meeting in Nicosia. The governments need to give their blessing for the merger to go ahead.A meeting on Saturday between French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel failed to produce a definite endorsement of the merger.

Attack by Iran's Ahmadinejad sparks Israel walkout

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Iran's president called Israel a nuclear-armed "fake regime" shielded by the United States, prompting Israel's U.N. ambassador to walk out of a high-level U.N. meeting Monday promoting the rule of law.Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also accused the U.S. and others of misusing freedom of speech and failing to speak out against the defamation of people's beliefs and "divine prophets," an apparent reference to the recently circulated amateur video made in the U.S. which attacks Islam and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad.The Iranian leader, who has called for Israel's destruction, used his speech to denounce Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory and U.S. vetoes in the U.N. Security Council to back its ally. He urged all nations to "hold occupiers accountable and make efforts to return the occupied territories to their rightful owners."Ahmadinejad blamed the "discriminatory" veto power of the U.S., China, Russia, Britain and France for the Security Council's failure to ensure peace in the world, and he called for a change in the rules "in favor of nations with due regard to justice."As Ahmadinejad addressed leaders and ministers from more than 100 countries, Israel's U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor walked out of the General Assembly hall."Ahmadinejad showed again that he not only threatens the future of the Jewish people, he seeks to erase our past," Prosor said in a statement."Three thousand years of Jewish history illustrate the clear danger of ignoring fanatics like Iran's President, especially as he inches closer to acquiring nuclear weapons," he said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes Tehran is moving closer to producing a nuclear weapon and has been pushing the United States to set "red lines" which, if crossed, might lead to American military action. President Barack Obama has refused to set any "red lines."The U.S. delegation did not walk out of Monday's meeting, as it has in the past when Iran attacked Israel directly.Ahmadinejad did not name either Israel or the U.S. in his speech but his targets were clear when he said: "We have witnessed that some members of the Security Council with veto right have chosen silence with regard to the nuclear warheads of a fake regime while at the same time they impede scientific progress of other nations."Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon organized the first-ever high-level U.N. meeting on the rule of law hoping to send a strong signal to people everywhere that world leaders "are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice."He told delegates he is proud that the United Nations is promoting the rule of law in more than 150 countries.Ban called on all states to apply the law equally, both nationally and internationally, and not allow political self-interest to undermine justice. He also called on world leaders "to uphold the highest standards of the rule of law in their decision-making at all times."At the start of the day-long meeting, diplomats from more than 100 countries adopted a declaration reaffirming "that states shall abide by all their obligations under international law." It stresses the importance of the rule of law in preventing and resolving conflicts and building peace in countries emerging from war and urges the U.N. and the international community to support such efforts.U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called the meeting "historic" and said the United States will continue "to support U.N.-led efforts to improve access to legal aid, to more effectively combat drug trafficking and organized crime" and to promote the rule of law in conflict and post-conflict situations.He said the meeting underscored a key conclusion in a recent World Bank report "that in today's world, the greatest threat to development and recovery is a weak rule of law."Many speakers cited the impact of corruption and stressed that no one can be above the law, from high government officials to ordinary citizens."In developing nations, corruption is the mortal enemy of democracy," Mongolia's President Tsakhia Elbegdorj said. "It is like an infectious disease — it must be attacked head on."He said high-level corruption also hurts development, so the fight for the rule of law "is also a fight for more transparent and successful economic development."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will arrive at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday to one of the most tumultuous meetings of the world body in memory.Several issues make for a frenzied agenda for the gathering, not least from Israel’s point of view: Iran’s nuclear program; public disagreement with US President Barack Obama over how to deal with that program; deep division among Arab countries over Syria, Iran and the results of the Arab Spring; and a new Palestinian bid for recognition as a state — a more limited bid but one that, unlike last year’s, is likely to succeed.Can Netanyahu, and Israel’s erudite envoy to the world body, veteran diplomat Ron Prosor, snatch some diplomatic achievements from what is usually a forum for symbolic gestures and rhetoric?

Ahmadinejad doesn’t wait to cause trouble

On Monday morning, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to avoid incendiary rhetoric while at the United Nations.But Ahmadinejad didn’t wait an hour, much less till the start of the general debate on Tuesday, to reject the secretary-general’s call and set the tenor of the international diplomatic discussion about his country’s intentions.In comments to reporters Monday, Ahmadinejad said his regime does “not take seriously the threats of the Zionists” — a reference to Netanyahu’s suggestion that Israel may attack Iran’s nuclear program if the international community doesn’t do more to slow it down — and then threatened Israel with annihilation.While Iran has “all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves,” Ahmadinejad said, it was Israel that should be worried.“We do believe that they have found themselves at a dead end and they are seeking new adventures in order to escape this dead end. Iran will not be damaged with foreign bombs,” he vowed, adding, “We don’t even count them as any part of any equation for Iran. During a historical phase, they represent minimal disturbances that come into the picture and are then eliminated.”Ahmadinejad is expected to speak before the assembled delegates Wednesday morning. The Israeli delegation and Jewish diplomats from other countries are expected to be absent, as the day falls on the sacred Jewish fast of Yom Kippur.

Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas are slated to speak to the assembly the following day, in the early afternoon.

Arguing with Obama in the middle of an election

Netanyahu arrives in New York in the midst of a very public election-season disagreement with the American president over how to handle the Iranian nuclear program.The tiff included interviews Netanyahu gave last week to CNN and NBC, in which he called on Obama to set “red lines” for Iran’s nuclear program that would trigger an American military intervention. Leaks from the Prime Minister’s Office suggested Obama has refused to meet with Netanyahu when he travels to the US this week.Senior American officials, including Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and even Obama himself, rejected the “red lines” call in conversations with reporters.The disagreement, in the middle of what many observers believe will be a close election, has drawn a great deal of attention and comment, much of it dealing with the politics of the spat rather than the substance.Thus, on Monday, the political magazine The Hill quoted senior Congressional Democrats publicly chastising the prime minister for the leak that suggested he was “snubbed” by the Obama White House.California Democrat Henry Waxman said he “didn’t think it was appropriate for the prime minister to publicly get into a dispute with the president of the United States, since we’re both very closely working together to impose sanctions and to force Iran to stop its development of a nuclear weapon.”Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, meanwhile, wondered aloud if Netanyahu was acting to support Republican candidate Mitt Romney. “And he’s making a mistake if he is,” Frank said. “I think it was unwise for him to do as much. I think they’ve pulled back a little bit.”For his part, Netanyahu has said repeatedly that the timing of his calls for a red line for Iran’s nuclear program is not related to the American electoral calendar, but to the Iranian nuclear one.A top Israeli official explained to The Times of Israel that Netanyahu feels it is he, not Obama, who is under pressure.“The prime minister looks around him and sees what’s on his plate. Lebanon and Syria, the situation in Sinai and Egypt. Jordan looks stable, but it’s not at all. Iran and Gaza and Hezbollah. And he says to the Americans, ‘the greatest danger by far is Iran. Will you take care of Iran?’”That Israeli sense that the region is becoming more dangerous with each passing day is driving the prime minister’s actions, the official, who asked to remain anonymous, said last week.And while Israelis peer fearfully around at a region in turmoil, Obama is failing to put them at ease, the official added.

“President Clinton made us feel like he had our back [at Camp David]. When we made concessions that were greater than anything an Israeli government had ever offered, we felt he’d be there if things went bad. Would he have been there? I don’t know. But it felt that way, and it put us in a different frame of mind. President Obama doesn’t give us the same sense that he’d be there.”This official does not believe Obama is uniquely unfriendly toward Israel, noting, “He just doesn’t seem to make friends. Not with anyone. He isn’t friendly with David Cameron either.”

Is there such a thing as an Arab bloc anymore?

Officials at the General Assembly cannot recall a time when Arab states arrived more divided, weakened and confused.Long beset by economic decline, corrupt institutions, disenfranchisement, and inadequate opportunities for women, the Arab states have reaped the whirlwind of those years of mismanagement. Some governments, such as those of Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Yemen and Libya, represent a new, more chaotic Middle East, while others, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar and Syria, represent the old order.These camps are deeply divided, even within themselves, on many issues on the General Assembly’s agenda, especially the continuing bloodbath in Syria, Iran’s aspirations to regional hegemony and nuclear weapons, and, at a deeper level, questions of democracy and the role of Islam in public life.Arab delegates’ speeches will likely garner a more interested audience than in previous years, as observers and world leaders try to discern where the region may be headed.

The birth of a new Palestinian state, and why it won’t matter

The Palestinians, meanwhile, look set to ask — or at least announce that they plan to ask — the General Assembly to upgrade their status from that of an observer entity to that of an observer state.If the move is ultimately accepted — and even Israeli officials acknowledge it will succeed if pursued — the Palestinian Authority will have gained formal, though non-binding acknowledgment from the UN’s main decision-making body that it is a state.“Instead of going 15 kilometers from Ramallah to Jerusalem, the Palestinians are flying all the way to the UN to change their status from observer to observer state,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor told The Times of Israel.“They have an automatic majority [in the General Assembly], so they’ll get it, but it’s not going to change anything on the ground, and it will only raise expectations and therefore increase frustration [among Palestinians],” he added.“What’s the point of declaring a state?” Prosor asked. “Do you control Gaza? No. Have you [Abbas] even visited Gaza? Not since 2005. So do you have democratic structures in place? There have been no elections since 2005-6.“The Palestinians are trying to bypass direct negotiations and trying to internationalize the conflict,” Prosor said of the move.“But there is no way to circumvent direct negotiations. I know from experience that in order to move forward, you have to sit and negotiate. There are good guys on both sides, but we have to work with each other. Both sides have to sit down and deal with all the issues they know about,” he said.It sounds so sensible, and so simple: sitting down together and working with each other. But at this UN General Assembly, not even the allies — Obama and Netanyahu — are going to do that, much less the adversaries.

Member states continue budget bickering

BRUSSELS - EU ministers on Monday (24 September) did not reach an agreement on the Cypriot EU presidency’s revised budget headings in the next seven-year, EU €1,033 billion budget pact.

“Not all elements of our negotiating box were accepted by most or all member states, but all member states accepted the ‘negotiating box’ as a basis for further work", said Andreas Mavroyiannis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs of Cyprus, who chaired the meeting.Mavroyiannis says spending cuts will be necessary in all MFF headings, which cover anything from job creation to farming subsidies. The EU presidency has yet to put any figures on the cuts on each but argues overall expenditure ceiling for 2014-2020 will have to be “have to be adjusted downwards”.The UK wants €100 billion slashed from the budget. Britain's Europe Minister David Liddington told the BBC that the commission "should get into the habit of spending better, not always looking to spend more".But other member states opposed the presidency’s revised plans to slash the budget, “arguing that the MFF was the major investment tool for promoting growth and creating jobs.”
Some also opposed any proposed cuts in the EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP) which eats up €55 billion of the EU’s budget every year. The delegations had argued against any reduction to the EU average of direct aid per hectare.CAP is set to cost the EU €380 billion over 2014 to 2020 with each EU citizen paying around €105 a year for the scheme, of which €80 goes directly to farmers.The commission also presented its plans to introduce its own VAT-based revenue stream. The EU budget is currently financed through customs duties, a uniform rate of 0.30% levied on the harmonised VAT base of each member state, and percentage levied on the GNI of each.But the commission proposal would entitle it to tax businesses and individuals as well. They also discussed a proposal to draw revenue based on a financial transaction tax. Some member states rejected both ideas.EU ministers will continue negotiations on 16 October and 20 November, with EU leaders to debate the issue on 22-23 November at a special summit. Cyprus is hoping for an overall deal by the end of the year.

Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar says the recent dispute between the US and Israel shows their fear of Muslims.“Today’s conspiracies of the enemies of Islam are the result of their diplomatic failures at the international level,” Najjar said on Monday. Referring to the recent plot by the US and the Zionist regime of Israel to insult Islam’s Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Najjar noted that “The global arrogance has fallen into its own trap.” The Iranian minister stated that the insult aimed to sow discord among Muslims, but it has created a new movement in the Islamic world and the enemies will pay dearly for it. Muslims around the world have held many demonstrations to condemn an anti-Islam film made in the US. The sacrilegious movie was followed by the publication of several cartoons mocking Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the French weekly Charlie Hebdo. Najjar further noted that Iran's progress in different military fields is the result of faith and reliance on indigenous knowledge of its scientists and experts. There have been several rounds of substantive negotiations that haven't brought a breakthrough, that haven't succeeded," he said.
"But the alternative to what we're doing now, sanctions plus negotiations, is to allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons or to get itself into a position where it could easily have a nuclear weapon, or say to let Israelis conclude that they should make an attack on Iran. The IDF Spokesperson announced on Monday evening that, according to a decision by Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and based on an IDF assessment, a general closure will be imposed on Palestinian Authority-assigned areas of Judea and Samaria as well as on Gaza during Yom Kippur.The closure began at 11:59 p.m. on Monday night and will be removed on Wednesday night at 11:59 p.m., several hours after the conclusion of Yom Kippur, subject to a security assessment.During the closure, movement from these areas into Israel will be approved in medical and humanitarian cases only and subject to approval by the Civil Administration.
“The IDF will continue to act to protect the citizens of Israel while considering the Palestinian fabric of life,” said the IDF statement.Earlier on Monday, Gantz told a memorial gathering to commemorate fallen soldiers that our enemies are trying harder than ever before to attack the State of Israel.Speaking during an annual ceremony that takes place at Kfar Bilu for paratroopers who have fallen in the line of duty, Gantz said “the attempts of our enemies to hurt the State of Israel are not stopping; rather, they are continuing to grow and change.”On Friday, a terror attack ended the life of 20-year-old IDF Cpl. Residents said smoke was billowing from the area in southeastern Damascus and an activist said ambulances were rushing to the scene."At exactly 9:35 a.m., seven improvised devices were set off in two explosions to target a school used for weekly planning meetings between shabbiha militia and security officers," said Abu Moaz, a leader of Ansar al-Islam, one of the rebel groups in the 18-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.The state news channel Syria TV quoted a government official as saying two improvised explosives planted by "terrorists" blew up near the "Sons of Martyrs" school in Damascus. It said seven people were wounded, with minor damage to buildings.Rebels said they expected high casualties from the blast but they did not give any confirmed reports of deaths."There were several officers present, and we are hoping they will be part of a large number of killed in this operation," Abu Moaz said.Southern Damascus has become a battleground between Assad's forces and opposition fighters. China carrier a show of force as Japan tension festers

TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - China sent its first aircraft carrier into formal service on Tuesday amid a tense maritime dispute with Japan in a show of force that could worry its neighbors.China's Ministry of Defense said the newly named Liaoning aircraft carrier would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests".

In fact, the aircraft carrier, refitted from a ship bought from Ukraine, will have a limited role, mostly for training and testing ahead of the possible launch of China's first domestically built carriers after 2015, analysts say.China cast the formal handing over of the carrier to its navy -- attended by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao -- as a triumphant show of national strength at a time of tensions with Japan over islands claimed by both sides."The smooth commissioning of the first aircraft carrier has important and profound meaning for modernizing our navy and for enhancing national defensive power and the country's overall strength," Xinhua news agency cited Wen as saying at the commissioning ceremony in the northern port of Dalian.Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply this month after Japan bought the East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner, sparking anti-Japan protests across China."China will never tolerate any bilateral actions by Japan that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty," Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun told his Japanese counterpart on Tuesday as the two met in a bid to ease tensions."Japan must banish illusions, undertake searching reflection and use concrete actions to amend its errors, returning to the consensus and understandings reached between our two countries' leaders."In a sign of the tensions, China has postponed a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties with Japan. Japanese Coast Guard vessels fired water cannon to turn away about 40 Taiwan fishing boats and 12 Taiwan Coast Guard vessels. Washington state's first 'zombie bees' reported

SEATTLE (AP) — The infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state."I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his bees either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.
He remembered hearing about zombie bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his bees were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies."Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.The zombie bees were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported (http://is.gd/ji7UNX).San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie bees in California in 2008.Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie bees in Oregon and South Dakota.The infection is another threat to bees that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly die.The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie bees is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the bee's abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots."They basically eat the insides out of the bee," Hafernik said.After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University."It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. New SARS-like virus detected in Middle East

LONDON (AP) — Global health officials are closely monitoring a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left a Qatari citizen in critical condition in London.The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.
In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.WHO said virus samples from the patient are almost identical to those of a 60-year-old Saudi national who died earlier this year. The agency isn't currently recommending travel restrictions and said the source of infection remains unknown. Still, the situation has raised concerns ahead of next month's annual Hajj pilgrimage, which brings millions of people to Saudi Arabia from around the world.Health officials don't know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people. SARS, which first jumped to humans from civet cats in China, hit more than 30 countries worldwide after spreading from Hong Kong."It's still (in the) very early days," said Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman. "At the moment, we have two sporadic cases and there are still a lot of holes to be filled in."He added it was unclear how the virus spreads. Coronaviruses are typically spread in the air but Hartl said scientists were considering the possibility that the patients were infected directly by animals. He said there was no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission."All possible avenues of infection are being explored right now," he said.No other countries have so far reported any similar cases to WHO, he said, and so far there is no connection between the cases except for a history of travel in Saudi Arabia.Hartl said the first patient may have had an underlying condition but it probably didn't make him more susceptible to catching the virus.Other experts said it was unclear how dangerous the virus is."We don't know if this is going to turn into another SARS or if it will disappear into nothing," said Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota. He said it was crucial to determine the ratio of severe to mild cases.Osterholm said it was worrying that at least one person with the disease had died. "You don't die from the common cold," he said. "This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS," which killed about 10 percent of the people it infected.Britain's Health Protection Agency and WHO said in statements that the 49-year-old Qatari national became ill on Sept. 3, having previously traveled to Saudi Arabia. He was transferred from Qatar to Britain on Sept. 11 and is being treated in an intensive care unit at a London hospital for problems including kidney failure. Respiratory viruses aren't usually known to cause serious kidney problems.In Qatar, Mohammed bin Hamid Al Thani of the Public Health Department said the patient was in Saudi Arabia for Ramadan during the summer and fell ill after returning to Qatar. Doctors could not immediately identify the virus and decided he should be treated in London.A public health official, Abdullakef al-Khal, said there is no indication that the patient's family or others were infected."There is no special alert for now," he said. "We are being vigilant."David Heymann, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said the new virus didn't appear that similar to SARS."It isn't as lethal as SARS and we don't know too much about its transmissibility yet," he said. "If people are getting infected, they aren't getting serious disease."

Heymann said none of the health workers involved in treating the Qatari patient had fallen ill.Saudi officials said they were concerned that the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage next month could provide more opportunities for the virus to spread. They advised pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

Snow in North Iceland in early September is not unheard of but snowfall of two to three meters overnight at this time of year—when the sheep are still in highland pastures—is highly unusual.Two to three meters (7-11 feet) of snow overnight! That’s a small taste of what the mammoths experienced.Armed with long sticks as used to look for people buried in avalanches, farmers in North Iceland have succeeded in finding hundreds of sheep. The search continues but hope grows fainter by the minute.Although not all have survived, most of these amazingly hardy creatures were alive after days in icy graves.To make it even more difficult, foxes are attacking the trapped sheep, often leaving them brutally injured.The association of breeders speaks of unprecedented disaster.Farmers say they have never experienced anything like this in their lifetime and hope they never will again.Coupled with blackouts across the region, from Blönduós in the west to Þórshöfn in the east, due to icing of power lines and we’re looking at an unprecedented situation, with real blizzards and extended blackouts throughout the region and motorists stranded in their cars.
