In typical firebrand fashion, European MEP Nigel Farage unleashed a barrage of home truths during a speech in the European Parliament today, including the assertion that Greece is now under full control of a joint European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund dictatorship.Farage was responding to a speech by Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, during which he called for further European integration to avert the worsening economic crisis.Barroso asserted that the economic crisis has turned into a fight for European integration, insisting that the solution to the growing threat to the european single currency is a more, and not less, integrated European Union.During the speech in Strasbourg, Barroso claimed that he is getting signals from EU leaders that they wish to push for a more integrated Europe in response to the crisis.What we need now is a new, unifying impulse, a new federalist moment – let’s not be afraid to use the word. Barroso said, adding The right way to stop the negative cycle and strengthen the euro is to deepen integration, mainly in the euro area. This is the way to go.This is a fight for the jobs and prosperity of families in all our member states. This is a fight for the economic and political future of Europe. This is a fight for what Europe represents in the world. This is a fight for European integration itself.” Barroso stated.

Barroso suggested that more central European governance was needed in order to fully implement rules governing the running of the euro area.… if a eurosceptic fringe can determine the position of one member state and one member state can block decisions, the result is that we are not credible. Barroso said.The EC president attempted to dismiss the idea that such a move would threaten the national sovereignty of member states by adding This is not about institutional positioning or power. It is about efficiency and delivery.Economic and monetary union cannot function properly only on the basis of decisions taken by unanimity. Barroso said, suggesting that the Commission and the EU should have authority over the governments of member states to enforce rules via the EU Community method.A system based purely on intergovernmental cooperation has not worked in the past and will not work in the future. After all, this is why the Community method and the EU institutions were created by the member states in the first place. Barroso argued.In response, Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, argued that the so called Troika group, made up of officials from the Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), are nothing more than part-time overseas dictators issuing orders to the Greek government.Farage addressed Barroso directly, stating I don’t think even you believe in what you are saying, because we all know that Greece is going to default.

You can’t say you weren’t warned: you were all told that Greece should never have joined the euro. Farage added, noting that five years ago he had personally been treated with such utter derision for warning about Greek bond spreads, as if he had been let out of the local lunatic asylum.Now you’ve got European economic governance and what is it? For years we will have an economy with plenty of slack, low borrowing costs, and high unemployment. The specter of a double dip will hover over us if government does not do its part in pushing the economy forward – not just this year, but for years to come. Now is the time not just to do shovel-ready projects, but to envision the backbone we want the American economy to have in 2020 and launch the multiyear plan we need to get there.Summers believes more spending and public debt will fix an economy destroyed by his bankster buddies on Wall Street. In order to get there, he has proposed taking money out of the private sector and spending it on politically expedient projects.The so-called infrastructure bank proposed by Obama is another public-private boondoggle. Public-private partnerships are essentially fascist, as Mussolini knew (he called it corporatism). According to fascist economics, profit should be private and losses public.Historian Gaetano Salvemini argued in 1936 that fascism makes taxpayers responsible to private enterprise because the State pays for the blunders of private enterprise… Profit is private and individual. According to the jobs legislation the White House released Monday, the bank would guarantee infrastructure project loans, putting taxpayers on the hook for losses.Obama’s people claim taxpayer subsidies would be conservatively estimated and structured,a claim government invariably makes when it prepares to steal more money at gunpoint or heap even more debt on citizen-suckers and their grand children.In order to get a better idea of how Obama’s corporatist scheme will end up, consider housing insurance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As I’ve noted for 6 months, the Japanese and U.S. governments have continually under-reported the severity of the nuclear crisis at Fukushima.The Wall Street Journal points out:The Japanese government initially underestimated radiation releases from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, in part because of untimely rain, and so exposed people unnecessarily, a report released this week by a government research institute says.PhysOrg writes:The amount of radiation released during the Fukushima nuclear disaster was so great that the level of atmospheric radioactive aerosols in Washington state was 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than normal levels in the week following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster.

[A] study [by University of Texas engineering professor Steven Biegalski and researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory] reports that more radioxenon was released from the Fukushima facilities than in the 1979 meltdown at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania and in the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Ukraine.Biegalski said the reason for the large release in Fukushima, when compared to the others, is that there were three nuclear reactors at the Japan facilities rather than just one.Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen notes:New TEPCO data measured on August 19 & 20 shows severe damage to the spent fuel in Fukushima Daiichi Units 1, 2, and 3…. This TEPCO data clearly contradicts and refutes the July assertion by the NRC the Fukushima Daiichi spent fuel pools were not damaged in this tragic accident.There are also several unconfirmed reports that the Japanese government is trying to keep people from buying geiger counters to measure radiation.

New, Large Radiation Releases Are Possible

Mainichi Dailly News notes:As a radiation meteorology and nuclear safety expert at Kyoto University’s Research Reactor Institute, Hiroaki Koide [says]:The nuclear disaster is ongoing.At present, I believe that there is a possibility that massive amounts of radioactive materials will be released into the environment again.At the No. 1 reactor, there’s a chance that melted fuel has burned through the bottom of the pressure vessel, the containment vessel and the floor of the reactor building, and has sunk into the ground. From there, radioactive materials may be seeping into the ocean and groundwater.The government and plant operator TEPCO are trumpeting the operation of the circulation cooling system, as if it marks a successful resolution to the disaster. However, radiation continues to leak from the reactors. The longer the circulation cooling system keeps running, the more radioactive waste it will accumulate. It isn’t really leading us in the direction we need to go.It’s doubtful that there’s even a need to keep pouring water into the No.1 reactor, where nuclear fuel is suspected to have burned through the pressure vessel. Meanwhile, it is necessary to keep cooling the No. 2 and 3 reactors, which are believed to still contain some fuel, but the cooling system itself is unstable. If the fuel were to become overheated again and melt, coming into contact with water and trigger a steam explosion, more radioactive materials will be released.We are now head to head with a situation that mankind has never faced before.

Mainichi also reports:The Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) and residents of the zone between 20 and 30 kilometers from the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant held an emergency evacuation drill on Sept. 12 … in preparation for any further large-scale emission of radioactive materials from the plant.The scenario for the drill presupposed further meltdown of the Fukushima plant’s No. 3 reactor core, and a local accumulation of radioactive materials emitting 20 millisieverts of radiation within the next four days. …And nuclear expert Paul Gunter says that we face a China Syndrome, where the fuel from the reactor cores at Fukushima have melted through the container vessels, into the ground, and are hitting groundwater and creating highly-radioactive steam.

Pre-crime face scanning lie detector technology set to be rolled out in airports and other public venues will aid authorities in conducting ‘security interrogations’ of individuals, despite the fact that the new device is even less reliable than the dubious polygraph test, and could easily lead to thousands of innocent people being framed as terrorists and criminals.A sophisticated new camera system can detect lies just by watching our faces as we talk, experts say. The computerised system uses a simple video camera, a high-resolution thermal imaging sensor and a suite of algorithms, reports BBC News.Researchers say the system could be a powerful aid to security services, according to the report, adding that the technology is set to be rolled out first in airports for security interviews and that the system will also be used to conduct covert truth tests in real time.The new system successfully discriminates between truth and lies in about two-thirds of cases, which equates to little more accuracy than chance alone, making it even less reliable than the notorious polygraph test, which has been widely dicredited and is habitually inaccurate.The technology is focused around detecting emotions such as distress, fear or distrust, all of which a stressed traveler could undergo without necessarily being a liar. Indeed, such emotions would be expected in an environment where people are being naked body scanned, groped by TSA thugs, and subjected to lie detector interrogations.In addition, such emotions could be registered when the subject fears not being believed by the authority figure. The person could be characterized as a liar when they are in fact completely honest.

As with everything we’ve seen rolled out in the context of airport security, this invasive technology is eventually planned to become a staple of the 21st century police state.Vowing not to fly won’t be good enough to avoid Big Brother’s gaze – this technology is ultimately designed to be used to control access to shopping malls, sports stadiums, and other public events.As we have previously documented, the Department of Homeland Security’s FAST program is based around similar technology that professes to detect malintent by means of pre-crime interrogations and physiological scans.Back in May, the DHS was busy conducting field tests of the technology at an undisclosed location in the northeast United States, suggesting its rollout is close to fruition.A promotional video for the program shows individuals who attend security events being led into trailers before they are interrogated as to whether they are terrorists while lie detector-style computer programs analyze their physiological responses. The subjects are asked about their whereabouts, and if they are attempting to smuggle bombs or recording devices into the expo, proving that the technology is intended to be used at public events and not just airports. Individuals who do not satisfy the first lie detector-style test are then asked additional questions.Just like the lie detector face scanner, the FAST program will undoubtedly frame thousands of people as terrorists and criminals without them even having committed any crime.Steven Aftergood, a senior research analyst at the Federation of American Scientists, a think-tank based in Washington DC that promotes the use of science in policy-making, is pessimistic about the FAST tests. He thinks that they will produce a large proportion of false positives, frequently tagging innocent people as potential terrorists and making the system unworkable in a busy airport. I believe that the premise of this approach — that there is an identifiable physiological signature uniquely associated with malicious intent — is mistaken. To my knowledge, it has not been demonstrated, Aftergood told Nature. Without it, the whole thing seems like a charade.

Unfortunately for Al Gore, but fortunately for the rest of us, much of what we will hear in his 24 Hours of Reality extravaganza starting Wednesday evening is pure fantasy.Gore is completely wrong when he tells us that the science of climate change is settled. If his Climate Reality Project actually did promote climate realism, he would tell us that the science is in a period of negative discovery — the more we learn, the more we realize we do not understand about this, arguably the most complex science ever tackled. Rather than remove the doubt, as Gore says, we need to recognize the doubt.Many of the ideas expressed by climate campaigners such as Gore and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon are the consequence of a belief in what Canadian professors Chris Essex (University of Western Ontario) and Ross McKitrick (University of Guelph) call the Doctrine of Certainty,a collection of now familiar assertions about climate that are to be accepted without question(Taken by Storm, 2007).

Essex and McKitrick write,But the Doctrine is not true. Each assertion is either manifestly false or the claim to know is false. Climate is one of the most challenging open problems in modern science. Some knowledgeable scientists believe that the climate problem can never be solved.Yet, as long ago as 1989, Gore insisted there was no dispute worthy of recognition about the dangers of man-made greenhouse gas-driven climate change. Since then his certainty has solidified into dogma.But that dogma is being contested by more and more reputable scientists who are finally speaking out in an organized fashion. For example, on August 29, a blockbuster science document was published that totally refutes Gore and Ban — the Interim Report of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC). Coauthored by a team of scientists recruited and led by climate experts Dr. Craig Idso, Professor Robert Carter, and Professor Fred Singer, the NIPCC shows that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has ignored or misinterpreted much of the research that challenges the need for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas controls. In other words, the science being relied upon by governments worldwide to create multi-billion dollar climate policies is almost certainly wrong.Consider extreme weather, the main topic of 24 Hours of Reality. Gore promotes the concept that greenhouse gas-induced global warming is leading to increasingly severe weather. But this defies logic. If the world warms due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions, temperatures at high latitudes are forecast to rise most, reducing the difference between arctic and tropical temperatures. Since this differential drives weather, we should see weaker midlatitude cyclones in a warmer world, and so less extremes in weather, not more.It is also a mistake to blame human activities for current weather extremes. The NIPCC concluded that the data reveal there have not been any significant warming-induced increases in extreme weather events.The report’s authors showed that this was the case whether the phenomenon being studied was precipitation, floods, drought, storms, hurricanes, fire, or other weather-related events.

For example, the NIPCC includes a study published this year in Geophysical Research Letters about the causes of the 2010 Russian heat wave. Researchers deduced that it was due to internal atmospheric dynamical processes and it is unlikely that the warming attributable to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations contributed significantly to the magnitude of the heat wave.We will probably find the same when most 2011 weather events are analyzed.Besides increasing extreme weather that people always notice, it is also important to take note of decreasing trends. For example, we are now near a 30 year low in worldwide accumulated cyclone energy (hurricanes in the North Atlantic), something that was not supposed to be happening if the forecasts of climate models were correct. This graph shows the trend in worldwide accumulated cyclone energy.Climate change and extreme weather have always happened and always will no matter what we do. Therefore, instead of futilely trying to stop them from occurring, we need to harden our societies to these inevitable events by burying electrical cables underground, reinforcing buildings and other infrastructure, and ensuring reliable energy sources so that we have the power to heat and cool our dwellings as needed.Gore tells us that his program will reveal the deniers. If by deniers he means those of us who do not support his belief in an impending human-caused climate catastrophe, then we certainly hope he does reveal us. Gore and Ban alone have had many times the mainstream media coverage of all the skeptics combined. It is time to listen to reputable experts who understand that predicting, let alone controlling, climate decades from now will remain science fiction for the foreseeable future.That may not be a comforting thought to climate crusaders, but that, Mr. Gore, is the true climate reality.
