The Move to Depopulate the Planet
Stephanie R. Pasco Infowars August 27, 2009

http://www.infowars.com/the-move-to-depopulate-the-planet/

It is my intention to give you clips from documents, many from the United Nations that prove there is a plan to depopulate this planet. I will also provide quotes from various people and organizations that further show this agenda is afoot. I pray the guidance of the Lord God Almighty will be with me in this pursuit to warn others of this dark plot against humanity.Everything written in this paper is easily verifiable. It may take some time and effort, but I took great pains to make this paper as accurate as I possibly could. The depopulation agenda is based on nature worship, or Gaia worship. In Genesis, God clearly told Adam and Eve, and then Noah and his family to go forth and multiply to fill the earth. Nowhere in the Bible does God rescind that clearly spoken commandment. Therefore man is attempting to supercede the command of the Lord God in heaven: The Creator! I ask you, who knows more about the state of the earth, the created, or the Creator? The basis for the depopulation agenda is a standard all elitist’s hold dear. This standard is called:

The Hegelian Dialectic: Problem – Reaction-Solution,Create the Problem Cause a Reaction Offer a Solution .You will see exactly how they have created the problem; caused a reaction so widespread it is really quite impressive how successful they have been; and offered a solution: A deadly solution.I ask that you please make an attempt to distribute this paper everywhere you possibly can. The time grows short and so many are going to be caught unawares. By getting the word out, you may be able to prevent someone from needless pain and suffering.William Benton, Assistant U.S. Secretary of State at UNESCO 1946: (UNESCO is the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization) As long as a child breathes the poisoned air of nationalism, education in world-mindedness can produce only precarious results. As we have pointed out, it is frequently the family that infects the child with extreme nationalism. The schools therefore use the means described earlier to combat family attitudes that favor jingoism (nationalism)…we shall presently recognize in nationalism the major obstacle to development of world mindedness. We are at the beginning of a long process of breaking down the walls of national sovereignty. UNESCO must be the pioneer.(Emphasis mine throughout)

Club of Rome, The First Global Revolution, 1991: In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill (this is absolute proof that man made global warming is a fabrication)…. But in designating them as the enemy, we fall into the trap of mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself.

Mikhail Gorbachev:We must speak more clearly about sexuality, contraception, about abortion, about values that control population, because the ecological crisis, in short, is the population crisis. Cut the population by 90% and there aren’t enough people left to do a great deal of ecological damage.

Aldous Huxley, Brave New World 1946: There is, of course, no reason why the new totalitarians should resemble the old. Government by clubs and firing squads, by artificial famine, mass imprisonment and mass deportation, is not merely inhumane (nobody cares much about that nowadays); it is demonstrably inefficient and in an age of advanced technology, inefficiency is the sin against the Holy Ghost.Aldous Huxley, Lecture named Population Explosion 1959: Let us ask ourselves what the practical alternatives are as we confront this problem of population growth. One alternative is to do nothing in particular about it and just let things go on as they are…The question is: Are we going to restore the balance in the natural way, which is a brutal and entirely anti-human way, or are we going to restore it in some intelligent, rational, and humane way…Try to increase production as much as possible and at the same time try to re-establish the balance between the birth rate by means less gruesome than those which are used by nature – by intelligent and human methods?…There are colossal difficulties in the way of implementing any large-scale policy of limitation of population; whereas death control is extremely easy under modern circumstances, birth control is extremely difficult. The reason is very simple: death control – the control, for example, of infectious diseases – can be accomplished by a handful of experts and quite a small labour force of unskilled persons and requires a very small capital expenditure.

Barry Commoner, Making Peace with the Planet:There have been triage proposals that would condemn whole nations to death through some species of global benign neglect. There have been schemes for coercing people to curtail their fertility, by physical and legal means that are ominously left unspecified. Now we are told that we must curtail rather than extend our efforts to feed the hungry peoples of the world. Where will it end? Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, April 28, 1997, Testimony before Congressional Committee: There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least. Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops. Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves. So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that’s why this is so important.

Jacques Cousteau-Jacques Cousteau UNESCO Courier 1991:In order to save the planet it would be necessary to kill 350,000 people per day.Jacques Cousteau, Population: Opposing Viewpoints:If we want our precarious endeavor to succeed, we must convince all human beings to participate in our adventure, and we must urgently find solutions to curb the population explosion that has a direct influence on the impoverishment of the less-favoured communities. Otherwise, generalized resentment will beget hatred, and the ugliest genocide imaginable, involving billions of people, will become unavoidable.Uncontrolled population growth and poverty must not be fought from inside, from Europe, from North America, or any nation or group of nations; it must be attacked from the outside – by international agencies helped in the formidable job by competent and totally non-governmental organizations.

Bertrand Russell, The Impact Of Science On Society 1953 -I do not pretend that birth control is the only way in which population can be kept from increasing… War… has hitherto been disappointing in this respect, but perhaps bacteriological war may prove more effective. If a Black Death could be spread throughout the world once in every generation survivors could procreate freely without making the world too full… The state of affairs might be somewhat unpleasant, but what of that? Really high-minded people are indifferent to happiness, especially other people’s… There are three ways of securing a society that shall be stable as regards population. The first is that of birth control, the second that of infanticide or really destructive wars, and the third that of general misery except for a powerful minority,

Henry Kissinger, 1978:U.S. policy toward the third world should be one of depopulation.David Rockefeller, 2000: We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order.
David Rockefeller: Memoirs 2002 Founder of the CFR:We wield over American political and economical institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as internationalists and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political structure, one world, if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.David Rockefeller, Co-founder of the Trilateral Commission:We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine & other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promise of discretion for almost 40 years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plans for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now much more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. Thomas Ferguson, the Latin American Case Officer for the State Department’s Office of Population Affairs (OPA) (now the US State Dept. Office of Population Affairs, est. by Henry Kissinger in 1975):There is a single theme behind all our work -we must reduce population levels, said Thomas Ferguson, the Latin American case officer for the State Department’s Office of Population Affairs (OPA).Either they [governments] do it our way, through nice clean methods or they will get the kind of mess that we have in El Salvador, or in Iran, or in Beirut. Population is a political problem. Once population is out of control it requires authoritarian government, even fascism, to reduce it.The professionals, said Ferguson, aren’t interested in lowering population for humanitarian reasons. That sounds nice. We look at resources and environmental constraints. We look at our strategic needs, and we say that this country must lower its population -or else we will have trouble. So steps are taken. El Salvador is an example where our failure to lower population by simple means has created the basis for a national security crisis. The government of El Salvador failed to use our programs to lower their population. Now they get a civil war because of it…. There will be dislocation and food shortages. They still have too many people there.(1981)

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, April 28, 1997; Testimony before Congressional Committee: And advanced forms of biological warfare that can target specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool.Sir Julian Huxley, UNESCO: its Purpose and its Philosophy: Political unification in some sort of world government will be required… Even though… any radical eugenic policy will be for many years politically and psychologically impossible, it will be important for UNESCO to see that the eugenic problem is examined with the greatest care, and that the public mind is informed of the issues at stake so that much that now is unthinkable may at least become thinkable. In the early 1950’s, former Communist Joseph Z. Kornfeder expressed the opinion that UNESCO was comparable to a Communist Party agitation and propaganda department. He stated that such a party apparatus handles the strategy and method of getting at the public mind, young and old.Huxley would lard the agency with a motley collection of Communists and fellow travelers. President Richard Nixon believed abortion was necessary as a form of eugenics to prevent interracial breeding.Theodore Roosevelt to Charles B. Davenport, January 3, 1913, Charles B. Davenport Papers, Department of Genetics, Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.:I wish very much that the wrong people could be prevented entirely from breeding; and when the evil nature of these people is sufficiently flagrant, this should be done. Criminals should be sterilized and feebleminded persons forbidden to leave offspring behind them…The emphasis should be laid on getting desirable people to breed…Theodore Roosevelt: Society has no business to permit degenerates to reproduce their kind…. Any group of farmers, who permitted their best stock not to breed, and let all the increase come from the worst stock, would be treated as fit inmates for an asylum…. Some day we will realize that the prime duty, the inescapable duty of the good citizens of the right type is to leave his or her blood behind him in the world; and that we have no business to permit the perpetuation of citizens of the wrong type. The great problem of civilization is to secure a relative increase of the valuable as compared with the less valuable or noxious elements in the population… The problem cannot be met unless we give full consideration to the immense influence of heredity…I wish very much that the wrong people could be prevented entirely from breeding; and when the evil nature of these people is sufficiently flagrant, this should be done. Criminals should be sterilized and feebleminded persons forbidden to leave offspring behind them… The emphasis should be laid on getting desirable people to breed.

By Carl Teichrib:The Georgia Guidestones, a massive granite edifice planted in the Georgia countryside, contains a list of ten new commandments for Earth’s citizens. The first commandment, and the one which concerns this article, simply states; Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.Robert Walker, former chair of PepsiCo and Proctor & Gamble on water: Water is a gift of nature. Its delivery is not. It must be priced to insure it is used sustainably.Ted Turner makes the radical statement that,A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal,Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood, funded by the Rockefellers) said in her proposed The American Baby Code, intended to become law:The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.This is the woman (Margaret Sanger) whom Hillary Clinton publicly declared she looked up to, during the 2008 presidential debates. Here is a short list of some advocates of eugenics; Alexander Graham Bell, George Bernard Shaw H. G. Wells, Sidney Webb, William Beveridge, John Maynard Keynes, Margaret Sanger, Marie Stopes, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Emile Zola, George Bernard Shaw, John Maynard Keynes, John Harvey Kellogg, Winston Churchill, Linus Pauling, Sidney Webb, Sir Francis Galton, Charles B. Davenport Futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard (who wanted to create a Dept. of Peace):Out of the full spectrum of human personality, one-fourth is electing to transcend…One-fourth is ready to so choose, given the example of one other…One-fourth is resistant to election. They are unattracted by life ever evolving. One-fourth is destructive. They are born angry with God…They are defective seeds…There have always been defective seeds. In the past they were permitted to die a natural death…we, the elders, have been patiently waiting until the very last moment before the quantum transformation, to take action to cut out this corrupted and corrupting element in the body of humanity. It is like watching a cancer grow…Now, as we approach the quantum shift from creature-human to co-creative human—the human who is an inheritor of god-like powers—the destructive one-fourth must be eliminated from the social body. We have no choice, dearly beloveds. Fortunately you, dearly beloveds, are not responsible for this act. We are. We are in charge of God’s selection process for planet Earth. He selects, we destroy. We are the riders of the pale horse, Death. We come to bring death to those who are unable to know God…the riders of the pale horse are about to pass among you. Grim reapers, they will separate the wheat from the chaff. This is the most painful period in the history of humanity.

Alexander Haig is quoted referring to the US State Department Office of Population Affairs, which was established by Henry Kissinger in 1975. The title has since been changed to The Bureau of Oceans, International Environmental and Scientific Affairs:
Accordingly, the Bureau of Oceans, International Environmental and Scientific Affairs has consistently blocked industrialization policies in the Third World, denying developing nation’s access to nuclear energy technology–the policies that would enable countries to sustain a growing population. According to State Department sources, and Ferguson himself, Alexander Haig is a firm believer in population control.Although the above stated quotes should be sufficient to prove that the elitists in power have definite intent to depopulate this planet to what they deem to be a sustainable level. Some will argue these are only opinions and are of no real consequence. I will now move on to providing bits of documentation showing this is a plan that has a worldwide scope of influence. Most of these documents are at least 10 years old, some older. That however, does not take away from the seriousness of the content. Do not think them invalid due to their age. It takes time to foment plans on such a grand scale. But, if you are honest with yourself you can see glimpses of these things happening today.I am going to cover some issues stemming from the UN Treaty on Biological Diversity (Agenda 21), which Bill Clinton signed into law in 1993before it was sent to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

EPA Internal Working Document Ecosystem Management: The executive branch should direct federal agencies to evaluate national policies…. in light of international policies and obligations, and to amend national policies to achieve international objectives. In other words, our federal bureaucrats are writing U.S. law, independent of Congress who has Constitutional authority to do that. They are changing regulations and creating laws out of thin air. They are no longer working for the people of the United States. They are working for the international community. There are so many treaties written up that they have (effectively) bound the United States. Whereas a few of the treaties were not a problem, the abundance (100’s) of them have now taken control over all of our lives-Michael Coffman

UN Treaty on Biological Diversity Assessment on Desirable Culture:Traditional societies have considered certain sites as sacred, where most human activities are prohibited. That is the heart of the Convention on Biodiversity. Locking up nearly 50% of the land area of the United States is their idea of protecting biological diversity. -Michael Coffman

UN Treaty on Biodiversity Diversity Usage of Fertilizers Not Sustainable:That fertilizers have played an essential part in producing the world’s harvests is undisputed. (It) is estimated that if the use of fertilizers ceased, the world’s harvests would be cut almost in half. However, the negative side of the equation is that the nitrates from fertilizers seep into ground water aquifers and they are seriously implicated in the eutrophication of lakes, rivers and coastal ecosystems causing often drastic changes in the fauna and flora. They are willing to take a course of action that will reduce the world’s food supply by half, or more, as they will likely reduce the use of pesticides knowing full well how many people this will kill. -Michael Coffman

UN Biodiversity Assessment on Sustainable Human Population; US Senate September 9, 1994:A reasonable estimate for an industrialized world society at the present North American material standard of living would be one billion people. This must be implemented within 30-50 years, 2/3’s of the population must be cut.The UN says property rights are not absolute and unchanging, but are there for the convenience of whatever government wants to do.– Michael Coffman .Nobody owns biodiversity, so everything we do impinges on biodiversity. Property rights become meaningless. At the Rio De Janeiro Summit it was decided that the Global Environmental Facility would be the depository of all property rights.– Michael Coffman

UN Biodiversity Assessment The Worldview of Western Civilization Section 12.2.3, Page 835:The western worldview is characteristic of large-scale societies, heavily dependent on resources brought from considerable distances. It is a worldview that is characterized by the denial of sacred attributes of nature… (which) became firmly established about 2000 years (ago) with the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious traditions. This same treaty considers rocks to be living beings on an equal plane with human beings. Rocks, many believe, will reincarnate into lower life forms; and gradually into human beings.

Bureau of Land Management Internal Working Document.Soylent green is… humans.Human Dimensions of Ecosystem Management Objective/Purpose: All ecosystem management activities should consider human beings as biological resources…(Reminiscent of Soylent Green)This document was brought before Congress. This statement created such an uproar that it was removed. Regardless of its removal, it still serves to prove the mindset of these people; and just because this was removed from a document it does not mean it was removed from the thoughts and the intended goals of those who penned it; or who believe it.For the elite to be able to have management of the ecosystem, humans would have no more value than a rock.– Michael Coffman

UN Biodiversity Treaty UN Global Biological Assessment Sustainable Human Populations:

Population growth has exceeded the capacity of the biosphere(i.e. the earth)It is estimated that an agricultural world in which most human beings are peasants should be able to support 5 to 7 billion people. Now I feel is an appropriate time to cover some other areas of government, as well as private organizations that would like to see the population of the world decrease at an astounding rate (up to 90%). This is a dark, bloody agenda that will cause terrible hardship and pain upon millions of people.World Wildlife Fund, World Resources Institute International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN): The IUCN involves the EPA, US Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, the National Wildlife Fund, the National Audubon Society, National Resources Defense Council, UNESCO, the Environmental Defense Fund, the U.N. Environmental Program, etc.

IUCN 1992 -Covenant On the Environment and Development:Eventually a wilderness network would dominate a region and thus would itself constitute the matrix, with human habitations being the islands. The remaining half of the US would be used as buffer zones. The night before this treaty was ratified, Senator Mitchell withdrew it from the calendar and it was never voted on. It took four men, devoted to God in prayer to stop this treaty. The treaty still waits in the wings. Upon ratification, the US will have no ability to protect its own citizens.-Michael Coffman

Henry Kissinger had a similar plan to use food as a weapon in 1974, found in the National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests; which was adopted as official policy by then President Gerald Ford in November of 1975. This Memorandum outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in lesser-developed countries by means of birth control, and implicitly, war and famine. Brent Scowcroft, who had by then replaced Kissinger as National Security Advisor, (the same post Scowcroft held in the Bush Administration), was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George H.W. Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, as were the Secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense and Agriculture. This document has never been renounced, only certain portions have been amended, leaving it as the foundational document on population control issued in the U.S. Government. The major players in the founding of this document are as follows:Henry Kissinger Richard Nixon Margaret Sanger Paul Ehrlich Werner Fornos Timothy Wirth The United Nations Population Fund The United States Agency for International Development Planned Parenthood Federation of America International Planned Parenthood Federation The Club of Rome UNICEF WHO United Nations World Bank
The document can be read here in its entirety, along with the other organizations and individuals complicit in this abomination:http://www.usmutes.com/NSSM200.htm

Adolph Hitler

Let it be noted that Adolph Hitler also used food as weapon, stating that food is a beautiful instrument…for maneuvering and disciplining the masses.Food has been used as a weapon of war for centuries. Why then would it be outrageous for the elite to use food as a weapon, both a physical and a psychological weapon, in a declared war on overpopulation? It would not be outrageous at all. As has been said time and time again, history repeats itself.

Now we will cover the Earth Charter.

The Earth Charter; A Radical Global Religion, created by Mikhail Gorbachev and Michael Strong: The Earth Charter initiative reflects the conviction that a radical change in humanity’s attitudes and values is essential to achieve social, economic and ecological well-being in the 21st century… The commission…plans to circulate a final version of the Charter as a People’s Treaty beginning in mid-1998. The Charter will be submitted to the U.N. General Assembly in the year 2000…(where it will) ensure a very strong document that reflects the emerging new global ethics. This is unprecedented (it is) the first component of an authentic global governance. We are working for dialogue and peace. We are demonstrating our ability to assert control over our fate in a spirit of solidarity to organize our collective sovereignty over this planet, our common heritage. The American people were not allowed to see this. Americans as a whole do not want the UN to be the head of a world government. The one thing the majority of this country values, above most everything else, is their freedom. Or the semblance of freedom we have left should I say.At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the Presidential Council on Sustainable Development in 1996 came to the conclusion that the world’s human population should not exceed 500 million people. That is a 93% reduction in population!According to the UN video, Armed to the Teeth”; and also in the Freedom From War Policy -put into effect by JFK in 1961-general and complete disarmament and US military power was given over, in full, to the UN. This is a loss of the sovereignty of America. (Read this document at http://www.scribd.com/doc/5009662/Freedom From-War).

The Earth Charter (1992), A Spiritual Vision: A consensus has developed that the Earth Charter should be…the articulation of a spiritual vision that reflects universal spiritual values, including, but not limited to, ethical values …a people’s charter that serves as a universal code of conduct for ordinary citizens, educators, business executives, scientists, religious leaders, non-governmental organizers and national councils of sustainable development; and a declaration of principles that can serve as a soft tax document when endorsed by the UN General Assembly. In its original form, The Earth Charter failed miserably due to open, blatant pantheistic approach. Gorbachev and Strong have worked diligently to change the language and make it appear less obvious. You may be wondering what the Earth Charter has to do with depopulation. It has everything to do with it. Here is a very brief synopsis of what the Charter holds for us.

According to the Charter, we must:Recognize that all beings are interdependent and every form of life has value…(Unborn children, of course, are not included in the UN’s definition of every form of life. The Earth Summit II documents continue to support the UN’s pro-abortion policies.)

Affirm faith in the inherent dignity of all human beings.(UN agencies, however, support policies of euthanasia for those determined not capable of living a quality life.)

Adopt at all levels sustainable development plans and regulations….(This is a prescription for global socialism in a super-regulated global state.)

Prevent pollution of any part of the environment…(Enforcing this dictum would mean stopping virtually all human activity.)

Internalize the full environmental and social costs of goods and services in the selling price.(This seemingly harmless sentence would empower the state to price, tax, and regulate all production and consumption.)

Ensure universal access to health care that fosters reproductive health and responsible reproduction. (This is a thinly disguised call for that includes abortion and population control.)

Eliminate discrimination in all its forms, such as that based on race … [and] sexual orientation.” (This provision is clearly aimed at criminalizing those who refuse to accept homosexuality as positive and good.)

Promote the equitable distribution of wealth within nations and among nations. (See;

Earth Charter

The Earth Charter has not been ratified. Do not make the mistake of assuming it has not been interwoven into our society, however! It is being taught in our schools and promoted shamelessly by Hollywood, the UN, NBC (owned by GE), ABC, CBS, CNN, HLN & all the Fox owned stations, with the exception of Fox News in order to keep the supporters blinded to the machinations of Rupert Murdock. Do not be deceived! The ability to freely procreate is soon to be removed from us, much as it has been in China for many years. Not only will we not be allowed to have children, anyone who is termed a useless eater (A term coined by Henry Kissinger) will be euthanized: Mercilessly culled. In Sweden , the Sterilization Act of 1934 provided for the voluntary sterilization of some mental patients. The law was passed while the Swedish Social Democratic Party was in power, though it was also supported by all other political parties in Parliament at the time, as well as the Lutheran Church and much of the medical profession. -Wikipedia.America is scheduled to become compliant to Codex Alimentarius (CA) as of December 31, 2009.Codex Alimentarius is going to regulate virtually anything that you put into your mouth that is not a pharmaceutical. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has accepted Codex Alimentarius and any nation that is a member of the WTO must become compliant with CA. In any dispute between 2 countries, the one that is Codex compliant automatically wins. This is quite an incentive for all nations to become compliant. – Rima Laibow.CA guidelines set for vitamins & minerals are said to be voluntary, however, they are scheduled to become mandatory on December 31, 2009. In 1994, Codex Alimentarius declared nutrients to be poisons: See the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act (DSHEA). Yet fluoride is acceptable! Why? It creates complacency. Proper nutrients will ensure a longer, healthier life. Not at all in keeping with a depopulation agenda.

From Esoteric Agenda, a documentary by Ben Stewart: In 1962 it was decreed that there would be a move toward total global implementation of Codex Alimentarius. The date set for implementation is December 31, 2009. WHO and FAO are the commissions in charge of CA. They fund it and run it at the request of the U.N.According to WHO & FAO, epidemiological projections, it is estimated that according to the vitamin and mineral guideline alone; when CA goes into global implementation on December 31, 2009, it will result in a minimum of 3 billion deaths; 1 billion due through starvation. The next 2 billion will die from preventable diseases due to malnutrition. The U.N. has put out dozens of reports calling for an 80% reduction in population (most put the number at 90%). At the 1997 Women’s World Conference in Beijing, the head of the U.N. Food Program said,We will use food as a weapon against the people. In conjunction with Codex Alimentarius, food will be limited and water consumption will be decreased to 10 gallons per day, per person. The average American uses 140 gallons of water every day. The food provided will be Genetically Modified and nutrient deficient. As of the Codex Alimentarius (CA) implementation date of 12/31/09, if there were a famine anywhere in the world, it will be illegal to send any high nutrient density biscuits. Or to distribute them!! Once a country becomes CA compliant, CA can never be repealed. Membership with the WTO robs the member nations of any and all sovereignty. Germany is now CA compliant.Codex Alimentarius goes hand in hand with Agenda 21 and the Kyoto Treaty. The deadline to implement both Agenda 21 and the Kyoto Treaty is 2012.(Rima Laibow)

Agenda 21 was birthed out of the Rio Summit 1992. Agenda 21 (A 21), a.k.a. Smart Growth, Regionalism, Visioning Processes, Action Plans, Shared Values; 20/20, Best Practices; Community Festivals & Public/Private Partnerships. These are the names you will hear A 21 called, the buzzwords.Every county must set up a council to oversee the implementation of A 21. A 21 is Sustainable Development. Steven Rockefeller set up the Earth Charter, referenced above. The Earth Charter is the new One World Religion: Earth worship. The earth is considered to be sacred, and its protection is a sacred trust. Global responsibility will demand basic changes in values, behaviors and attitudes of government, the private sector, and civil society.Under Sustainable Development man is considered to be responsible for the pollution of the planet and is subordinate to all other living creatures. This is a direct contradiction to the Bible where God placed man in a position of dominance over the entire earth. The elite will worship and serve the creature, rather than the Creator. The environmental agenda is a spiritual agenda with earth worship at its root. As such, the following practices are all considered to be unsustainable: Fossil fuels, artificial fertilizers, modern systems of agricultural production, irrigation water, herbicides, pesticides, farmland, pastures, grazing of livestock, consumerism, dietary habits, salt, sugar, private property, paved roads, dams, reservoirs, logging activities, fencing of pastures. – Joan Peros.Every environmental resource must be measured. What can be measured can be managed under the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment Project.– Joan Peros

Among the things considered to be unsustainable, as listed above, these are included: Monotheism and the family unit. The health care plan of President Obama is under A 21. Under this health care plan, the family unit is very much being attacked. Anyone over age 65 must undergo end of life counseling by their doctor every 5 years. Abortion will be pushed that much harder, especially with the Science Czar wanting sterilants put into our water supply! One of the new appointee’s to the Obama Administration once said in a book he co-wrote that a child could be killed up to the age of 2 years old! What kind of a monster could think that is acceptable? Nearly the exact language used to define Sustainable Development was taken from the 1977 Soviet Constitution! The Family Dependency Ratio, under the United Nations, will look at every household. They will gauge what that household has produced in accordance with what it has used (i.e., resources) by the water bills, energy bills, etc. Are you using more than you are producing? Are you adding to the collective, or merely taking away? This is how the powers that be will determine whether you are a productive citizen, or, in the words of Henry Kissinger, A useless eater. In 1990, Prince Charles formed The Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum to bring together 50-60 of the world’s topmost multi-national/transnational corporations to start buying up governments around the world. This is Public/Private Partnerships: This is the very definition of fascism.I must stop here. At the rate things are now moving, I could add to this daily. But, December 31 is not so far away now, only 4 months. I must get this out now. Time is short. If you find this to be worthy, please, spread it everywhere you can. Email it, blog it, post it on forums; mail it. Do what you must. People are asleep. They must be woken up. Forced immunizations are right around the corner. These things will come to pass. It is our job to warn people. Please, I ask you, warn them.

DANIEL 7:23-24
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast(THE EU,REVIVED ROME) shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,(7TH WORLD EMPIRE) which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.(TRADE BLOCKS)
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise:(10 NATIONS) and another shall rise after them;(#11 SPAIN) and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.(BE HEAD OF 3 KINGS OR NATIONS).

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, has encouraged his fellow MEPs to make a quick decision on the re-appointment of European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso, warning that a delay threatens European stability. It would be much better for the stability of the EU and its institutions if a vote is held in September, the new president told reporters alongside his commission counterpart on Thursday (27 August) in Brussels. The two institutions need to organise themselves ahead of the Irish vote and I hope and expect a vote on 16 September.Mr Buzek, a member of Mr Barroso's centre-right political family, backs a second term for the ex-Portuguese prime minister, along with the rest of the European People's Party. But the liberals and socialists in the parliament have given the commission president a list of demands to which he must agree before they are willing to vote him in.Mr Barroso is due to present a programme for his next five years to parliament next week, and will meet with the leaders of the different political groups on 8 and 9September.The Greens, steadfastly opposed to his re-appointment, do not want any decision made before the second Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, on 2 October.

The political groups in the parliament are scheduled to take a decision on the timing of the vote on 10 September.Mr Buzek hopes that he can convince them that a rapid vote is in Europe's best interests. It would be much better for the European Union to have the European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU presidency very well organised,he said.

Ryanair launches pro-Lisbon treaty campaign
LEIGH PHILLIPS 27.08.2009 @ 09:02 CET

Irish cut-price airline Ryanair has said it will spend half a million euros on a campaign backing the Lisbon Treaty ahead of Ireland's second referendum on the document, scheduled for 2 October. On Wednesday (26 August), the company's chief executive, Michael O'Leary, announced in Dublin his firm will get involved because he does not trust incompetent politicians to win the argument alone.Living up to his carefully crafted reputation as a right-wing curmudgeon, during a press conference designed to be a defence of the European Union, Mr O'Leary attacked the government, the Yes campaign, the No campaign, civil servants and trade unionism. If we don't campaign for a Yes vote, there's a danger that it could be lost again, he told reporters. There's a danger that people could be complacent or vote against the treaty as a vote against the government. He said he did not trust the Yes side to be won by Brian Cowen, Micheal Martin, and all the other incompetents. He termed the No side a group of headbangers, ridiculing what he called a ragbag amalgam of the No campaign, led by economic illiterates like Sinn Fein, the UK Independence Party and the Socialist Party.

Without the EU, he said, the Irish economy would be run by our incompetent politicians, our inept civil service and the greedy public sector trade union bosses who, through social partnership, have in recent years destroyed Ireland's competitiveness, created an epidemic of useless quangos and feathered the nests of the public sector at the expense of ordinary consumers in Ireland. In total, the company will spend €500,000 on a publicity campaign, with €200,000 going to newspaper and internet adverts and €300,000 on deeply discounted seats intended to highlight Brussels' positive role in reducing air fares.Ryanair is not the first major corporation to launch a Yes campaign. Last week, the Irish division of computer chipmaker Intel announced that it will also battle to save the treaty.

Tropical Storm watch for NC coast for Danny AUG 27,09

MIAMI – Forecasters have issued a tropical storm watch for the North Carolina coast ahead of Tropical Storm Danny.Forecasters say large swells are expected to produce dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents along the U.S. East Coast over the next day or two.The watch is in effect from Cape Lookout north to Duck, including the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.Danny is centered about 485 miles (780 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving north at 8 mph (13 kph). Tropical Storm force winds extend out more than 200 miles.Danny's maximum sustained winds decreased Thursday evening to near 45 mph (75 kph) but strengthening is possible over the next few days.

Tropical Storm Danny moves toward US coast AccuWeather Thu Aug 27, 8:42 pm ET

MIAMI (AFP) – Warnings were issued for parts of North Carolina ahead of Tropical Storm Danny's arrival on the US east coast, but forecasters said the weather system was disorganized and had lost strength. The storm still looked likely to bring strong winds and heavy rain to much of the east coast, including Massachusetts, where mourners were preparing to pay their last respects to Senator Edward Kennedy, who died there Tuesday. At 0000 GMT, Danny's top winds had decreased to 50 miles (85 kilometers) per hour, and the weather system was moving north at just six miles (nine kilometers) per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Disorganized Danny moving slowly northward, the center's bulletin said.Forecasters said they expected the storm to turn northwest on Thursday evening, and then head north, gaining more speed, on Friday.Earlier, forecasters had said Danny could become a weak hurricane on Saturday, possibly hitting the northeastern US coast as well as the Canadian Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.A tropical storm warning was issued for the North Carolina coast from Cape Lookout northward to Duck, and the NHC said, interests elsewhere from the Carolinas northward... should monitor the progress of Danny. The storm could bring drenching rain and gusty winds to coastal Massachusetts just as President Barack Obama was to give a eulogy at Saturday's Boston funeral for Edward Kennedy, who died Tuesday in Hyannis Port at the age of 77.

Kennedy's body will lie in repose at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library for the public to pay respects ahead of Saturday's mass.At 0000 GMT, the NHC said Danny's center was about 515 miles (825 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.Slow strengthening is possible during the next day or so,the NHC said. The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends on November 30.Hurricane Bill, the first of the Atlantic storm season, was downgraded Monday to a mere storm as it swept over Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland. So far 2009 has seen one of the calmest starts to the hurricane season in a decade, which researchers have attributed to the development of an El Nino effect in the Pacific.

More than 1,500 ordered to flee Calif. wildfires By ROBERT JABLON, Associated Press Writer – AUG 28,09

LOS ANGELES – Wildfires threatened hundreds of homes in the seaside hills and foothill canyons near Los Angeles early Friday, feeding on bone-dry brush in the midst of a heat wave expected to drive temperatures into triple digits. As many as 1,500 people had to leave the wealthy seaside community of Rancho Palos Verdes overnight, while residents of about 870 homes were urged to voluntarily leave La Canada Flintridge, a dozen miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles on the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.Water-dropping helicopters worked through the night, as the ominous red glow of flames illuminated the darkness. A lack of wind let the helicopters operate in the canyons, Los Angeles County fire Inspector Steve Zermeno said. When the wind starts blowing through there, it picks up a lot of speed, he said.Any gust of wind can blow them off course or cause them to lose control. The Rancho Palos Verdes fire erupted late Thursday and spread rapidly, damaging three homes and several garages and outbuildings, but crews managed to keep it from expanding overnight, Capt. Mike Brown said.

The 100-acre blaze was 35 percent contained early Friday, Zermeno said.

The wealthy communities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula south of Los Angeles are in an area known for horse trails, spectacular Pacific Ocean views, pricey real estate and exclusive golf clubs, including the Trump National Golf Club owned by Donald Trump.
The Terranea Resort, a luxury hotel a couple miles from the fire, opened its door to locals who had to evacuate, but only two families had taken advantage of the offer by midnight, said hotel spokeswoman Wendy Haase. The fire near La Canada Flintridge began to kick up late Thursday afternoon, a day after it began in the Angeles National Forest, and flames moved slowly down the slopes of the San Gabriels. By early Friday it was estimated to cover more than 2 square miles and was about 10 percent contained.

The fire jumped a highway overnight and moved near homes, said Jennifer Sanchez, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.Zermeno said the fire was being fought mainly from the air because the terrain was too steep for firefighters to reach it easily.Still air meant the fire was growing slowly rather than being pushed, but we'll see if nature is still on our side later in the day, Zermeno said. The National Weather Service predicted a third day of red flag conditions of extreme fire danger for many of California's central and southern mountain ranges because of because of low humidity and triple-digit heat that sapped moisture from grass and brush. To the east, another fire in the San Gabriel Mountains was 60 percent contained late Thursday after burning across more than 3 square miles, Sanchez said.Nearly 1,000 firefighters aided by bulldozers and a fleet of water- and fire retardant-dropping aircraft worked the fire's northeastern edge. The fire, believed caused by human action began Tuesday near a dam and reservoir in San Gabriel Canyon, a half-dozen miles above the city of Azusa.Farther north in Monterey County, 100 homes were evacuated about four miles from the community of Soledad. The fire burned more than 2,000 acres of steep grasslands, or more than 3 square miles, since it started Thursday afternoon, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. James Dellamonica said. The blaze has not been contained. To the west, in the San Bernardino National Forest in Riverside County, another fire had blackened about 1 1/2 square miles by Thursday evening and prompted authorities to issue a voluntary evacuation of 12 homes in the area near Hemet, said Forest Service fire spokeswoman Anabele Cornejo. She said about five people had left and that the fire was 5 percent contained.Associated Press Writers Sudhin Thanawala in San Francisco and Tracie Cone in Fresno contributed to this report.

Calif. firefighters battle wilderness blazes By ROBERT JABLON, Associated Press Writer – Thu Aug 27, 7:58 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – California firefighters working in withering heat battled wildfires Thursday in rugged mountains above the foothill suburbs of Los Angeles, in the central coast region and on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park.Weather plagued fire crews as temperatures in some areas rose toward triple digits and humidity levels headed downward. For a second day, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning of extreme fire conditions for many of California's central and southern mountain ranges.

No major structural losses were reported.

The major battles in Southern California were in the San Gabriel Mountains as firefighters struggled to keep flames from topping ridges and surging into a wider area of the sprawling Angeles National Forest northeast of downtown Los Angeles, where the temperature hit 99 degrees before noon. The largest of two fires, which spread lung-burning haze over much of metropolitan Los Angeles, was 45 percent contained after burning across 1,850 acres, or nearly 3 square miles, said Capt. Jim Wilkins of the U.S. Forest Service.Nearly 1,000 firefighters aided by bulldozers and a fleet of water- and fire retardant-dropping aircraft were concentrating on the fire's northeastern edge.Wilkins said the area is so steep that it's almost to the point where you need ropes for firefighters to reach it.The heat and very low humidity — which saps moisture from vegetation — were not helping. When you have all of those factors in alignment, it just burns explosively, Wilkins said.On Wednesday, about 70 people were ordered evacuated from a trailer park and private campground along a fork of the San Gabriel River, Wilkins said. The fire, believed caused by human action began Tuesday near a dam and reservoir in San Gabriel Canyon, a half-dozen miles above the city of Azusa.A second fire about 20 miles to the west surged in the dry conditions Thursday north of the foothill suburb of La Canada Flintridge and sent another massive plume of smoke above Los Angeles. The fire grew from 30 to 300 acres and containment was reduced from 20 to 10 percent, Forest Service spokesman Bruce Quintelier said.

Quintelier said the fire, which broke out Wednesday, was moving to the north and west deeper into the forest and wasn't immediately threatening homes. In southern Monterey County, a blaze that erupted Wednesday grew to 2,754 acres, or 4.3 square miles, but evacuation orders were lifted for 20 residences in the Lockwood-Jolon area, said Curt Itson, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The blaze was 60 percent contained after burning two outbuildings and a trailer.Elsewhere in the central coast region, a wildfire that has scorched 140 square miles of brush this month in the mountains of Santa Barbara County flared up Wednesday, burning another 1,000 acres but remaining within containment lines. The fire began on Aug. 8. Investigators said it was caused by a cooking fire set by marijuana traffickers in Los Padres National Forest. Meanwhile, the two dozen cabins that make up the Yosemite National Park enclave of Foresta were evacuated at 1 a.m. Thursday as a wildfire closed in. The fire began as a prescribed burn and jumped its boundaries, quickly growing from a planned 90 acres to 1,170 near midday. The fire forced closure of parts of Highway 120, the route most popular with visitors driving in from the north. Two brushfires were burning on the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County. A 100-acre blaze erupted on Wednesday and a 20-acre fire was spotted Thursday but they were in remote areas and no buildings were threatened, Lance Cpl. Michael Atchue said.Associated Press Writers Sudhin Thanawala in San Francisco and Tracie Cone in Fresno contributed to this report.

Millions in Nepal facing hunger as climate changes By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA, Associated Press Writer – Fri Aug 28, 5:48 am ET

KATMANDU, Nepal – Millions of people in Nepal face severe food shortages because global climate change has disrupted weather patterns and slashed crop yields in the Himalayan nation, an international aid agency warned Friday.Changing weather patterns have dramatically affected crop production in Nepal, leaving farmers unable to properly feed themselves and pushing them into debt, Oxfam International said in a report released in Katmandu.

The British aid agency described the situation as deeply worrying.Communities told us crop production is roughly half that of previous years ... Last year many could only grow enough (food) for one month's consumption, said Oxfam's Wayne Gum, adding that less precipitation has been forecast this winter, which will make the situation worse.

More extreme temperatures, drier winters and delays in summer monsoons have all compounded the situation, the report said.More than 3.4 million people in Nepal are estimated to require food assistance, and food stocks in farming communities will last only a few months, it warned.Oxfam said Nepal will likely suffer more frequent droughts because of climate change. River levels will decline due to the reduced rainfall and glacial retreat, making it harder to irrigate crops and provide water for livestock. The predicted impacts of climate change will heighten existing vulnerabilities, inequalities and exposure to hazards, the report said.Oxfam recommended in its report that the government and international organizations intervene to ease food shortages in hill and mountain districts and provide assistance during the upcoming planting season. The government should encourage farmers to try new crop varieties and improve water management, and it should integrate climate change strategies into government planning.Ang Dawa, a member of a parliamentary committee tackling climate change, said its effects were already prevalent in Nepal, especially in the mountainous north. She said her village in the foothills of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, was covered in several feet (dozens of centimeters) of snow during the winter when she was a child, but now there is hardly any snow.

Facebook agrees with Canada on privacy controls By CHARMAINE NORONHA, Associated Press Writer - Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:50PM EDT

TORONTO - Facebook agreed Thursday to give users more control over the information they share with outside applications like games and quizzes in response to concerns raised by Canadian privacy officials.Currently, people who wish to use such software have to agree to share all their data with the application. For example, when a user signs up to take a quiz, the software developer could tap the user's biographical information, photos and hobbies, along with profiles and information on friends, even if such data aren't needed to take the quiz. With the changes, the application developer will have to specify ahead of time which categories of data the software needs. Users will have the opportunity to hold back certain pieces of information when they approve access. A link also will be provided so users can get an explanation of what information is collected and why.Users will also have to specifically approve any access Facebook applications have to their friends' information. Such access still would be subject to the friend's privacy and application settings.Application developers have had virtually unrestricted access to Facebook users' personal information,Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart told reporters Thursday. The changes Facebook plans to introduce will allow users to control the types of personal information that applications can access.Facebook said the entire process would take up to a year to implement.Although the changes stemmed from Canadian privacy complaints, they will apply to Facebook's 250 million users worldwide.Dave Morin, senior platform manager at Facebook, said the changes won't hinder developers' ability to create good applications.

Users will continue to be more and more engaged over time and people will develop better businesses because of it,he said. It's about the user being in control.Last month, Canada's privacy commissioner accused Facebook of disclosing personal information about users to the nearly 1 million outside developers worldwide who create Facebook applications.Stoddart's report also said the Web site breaches Canada's privacy law by keeping a user's personal information indefinitely — even after some members close their accounts. As part of Thursday's agreement, Facebook will spell out in its privacy policy the difference between deleting an account — which removes all personal information from Facebook servers after two weeks — and deactivating it, which merely makes the profile inaccessible, but lets Facebook keep the information into its database.Facebook will also provide users with a better explanation of how its advertising programs work and how accounts of deceased users are handled. The site will point out that users' profiles are kept online for friends to post comments and pay tribute; eventually friends and relatives will have a mechanism for deleting accounts.

However, analysts cautioned that the safeguards are not foolproof.

Jules Polonetsky, co-chairman and director at the Future of Privacy Forum think tank in Washington, D.C., said that while users will be more aware that applications are accessing their data, they may still click through the notices without regard for what information they are ceding to the developers.Privacy has been a central, often thorny issue for Facebook because so many people use it to share personal information with their friends and family. As the 5-year-old social networking service has expanded its user base and added features, its privacy controls have grown increasingly complicated. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has said it was overhauling its privacy controls in an attempt to simplify its users' ability to control who sees the information they share on the site. The Canadian privacy commission garnered worldwide attention this summer when Canada became the first country to legally examine Facebook's privacy provisions, in response to a complaint last year from students at the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic at the University of Ottawa. Stoddart said European and Australian regulators had also begun looking at social-networking issues.Elizabeth Denham, the assistant privacy commissioner who carried out Canada's investigation on Facebook, said her office is now analyzing the privacy policies and practices of six other social networking sites available to Canadians. She would not name the sites. Many companies that have been operating for years, need to take note of Canadian law or whatever domestic law of the country they're operating in,she said in an interview. The outcome of Canada's investigation could influence the practices of other social networking Web sites, such as MySpace and Twitter. MySpace said officials will meet with Canada's privacy commissioner next month. The company said it does not believe the Facebook changes will not affect MySpace operations, as MySpace already deletes users information from its servers once an account is deactivated.Stoddart said she hopes all social networking sites will adapt their privacy practices based on the Facebook agreement.

Suicidal planet seems on death spiral into star By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer – Wed Aug 26, 1:00 pm ET

WASHINGTON – Astronomers have found what appears to be a gigantic suicidal planet. The odd, fiery planet is so close to its star and so large that it is triggering tremendous plasma tides on the star. Those powerful tides are in turn warping the planet's zippy less-than-a-day orbit around its star. The result: an ever-closer tango of death, with the planet eventually spiraling into the star. It's a slow death. The planet WASP-18b has maybe a million years to live, said planet discoverer Coel Hellier, a professor of astrophysics at the Keele University in England. Hellier's report on the suicidal planet is in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. It's causing its own destruction by creating these tides, Hellier said. The star is called WASP-18 and the planet is WASP-18b because of the Wide Angle Search for Planets team that found them. The planet circles a star that is in the constellation Phoenix and is about 325 light-years away from Earth, which means it is in our galactic neighborhood. A light-year is about 5.8 trillion miles. The planet is 1.9 million miles from its star, 1/50th of the distance between Earth and the sun, our star. And because of that the temperature is about 3,800 degrees. Its size — 10 times bigger than Jupiter — and its proximity to its star make it likely to die, Hellier said.

Think of how the distant moon pulls Earth's oceans to form twice-daily tides. The effect the odd planet has on its star is thousands of times stronger, Hellier said. The star's tidal bulge of plasma may extend hundreds of miles, he said.Like most planets outside our solar system, this planet was not seen directly by a telescope. Astronomers found it by seeing dips in light from the star every time the planet came between the star and Earth. So far astronomers have found more than 370 planets outside the solar system. This one is yet another weird one in the exoplanet menagerie, said planet specialist Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

It's so unusual to find a suicidal planet that University of Maryland astronomer Douglas Hamilton questioned whether there was another explanation. While it is likely that this is a suicidal planet, Hamilton said it is also possible that some basic physics calculations that all astronomers rely on could be dead wrong. The answer will become apparent in less than a decade if the planet seems to be further in a death spiral, he said.On the Net Nature: http://www.nature.com/nature

1,000 Banks to Fail In Next Two Years: Bank CEO
Published: Thursday, 27 Aug 2009 | 10:29 PM ET Text Size By: Natalie Erlich
Writer/Producer

The US banking system will lose some 1,000 institutions over the next two years, said John Kanas, whose private equity firm bought BankUnited of Florida in May.AUG 27,09

We’ve already lost 81 this year,Kanas told CNBC.The numbers are climbing every day. Many of these institutions nobody’s ever heard of. They're smaller companies.Failed banks tend to be smaller and private, which exacerbates the problem for small business borrowers, said Kanas, who became CEO of BankUnited when his firm bought the bank and is the former chairman and CEO of North Fork bank.Government money has propped up the very large institutions as a result of the stimulus package, he said. There’s really very little lifeline available for the small institutions that are suffering. This comes at a time when the FDIC has established new rules on bank sales. Private equity, for instance, would have to hold double the capital of their competitors in order to buy such an institution, said Kanas. This will have somewhat of a chilling effect on our participation,he said.As a result of having to keep higher capital levels, we’ll see lower prices coming from that sector.Of the 81 failed banks this year, two have been successfully acquired by private equity, he said. Kanas’ private equity firm bought UnitedBank, the failed Florida-based bank, from the FDIC in May. Regulators also allowed the sale of IndyMac Bank of California earlier this year.

We are seeing more people step up and lobby bids in this situation,he said. We’re seeing more players mostly as a result of being attracted to the sector. I’m not so sure that will continue now that the rules have been ratchet it up.Meanwhile, much of the commercial realty problem resides in the regional and small community banks, said Kanas, because larger banks haven’t fueled that sector in the past. The market is expecting about the way we were expecting,he said.Unfortunately, we’re not seeing any evidence of a recovery in the real estate market in the southern Florida market,he said.CNBC.

August 26, 2009 8:26 PM Democratic Health Care Bill Divulges IRS Tax Data
Posted by Declan McCullagh

(AP)One of the problems with any proposed law that's over 1,000 pages long and constantly changing is that much deviltry can lie in the details. Take the Democrats' proposal to rewrite health care policy, better known as H.R. 3200 or by opponents as Obamacare.Section 431(a) of the bill says that the IRS must divulge taxpayer identity information, including the filing status, the modified adjusted gross income, the number of dependents, and other information as is prescribed by regulation. That information will be provided to the new Health Choices Commissioner and state health programs and used to determine who qualifies for affordability credits.Section 245(b)(2)(A) says the IRS must divulge tax return details -- there's no specified limit on what's available or unavailable -- to the Health Choices Commissioner. The purpose, again, is to verify affordability credits.Section 1801(a) says that the Social Security Administration can obtain tax return data on anyone who may be eligible for a low-income prescription drug subsidy but has not applied for it. Over at the Institute for Policy Innovation (a free-market think tank and presumably no fan of Obamacare), Tom Giovanetti argues that: How many thousands of federal employees will have access to your records? The privacy of your health records will be only as good as the most nosy, most dishonest and most malcontented federal employee.... So say good-bye to privacy from the federal government. It was fun while it lasted for 233 years.I'm not as certain as Giovanetti that this represents privacy's Armageddon. (Though I do wonder where the usual suspects like the Electronic Privacy Information Center are. Presumably inserting limits on information that can be disclosed -- and adding strict penalties on misuse of the information kept on file about hundreds of millions of Americans -- is at least as important as fretting about Facebook's privacy policy in Canada.)

A better candidate for a future privacy crisis is the so-called stimulus bill enacted with limited debate early this year. It mandated the utilization of an electronic health record for each person in the United States by 2014,but included only limited privacy protections. It's true that if the legislative branch chooses to create affordability credits,it probably makes sense to ensure they're not abused. The goal of curbing fraud runs up against the goal of preserving individual privacy. If we're going to have such significant additional government intrusion into our health care system, we will have to draw the privacy line somewhere. Maybe the House Democrats' current bill gets it right. Maybe it doesn't. But this vignette should be reason to be skeptical of claims that a massive and complex bill must be enacted as rapidly as its backers would have you believe. Update August 27 11 a.m: Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center says in e-mail:We would oppose section 431(a) of the bill because it violates the intent of the Privacy Act which generally requires agencies to obtain information directly from individuals and not from other agencies.EPIC still hasn't updated their Web site to reflect this sentiment, but it's good to know that other folks have concerns too.

West Nile virus mosquito found in Switzerland By FRANK JORDANS, Associated Press Writer – AUG 28,09

ZURICH – A mosquito capable of spreading the deadly West Nile virus to humans has been detected in central Europe for the first time, Swiss scientists said Friday.

The Asian rock pool mosquito — or aedes japonicus — has colonized an area of 1,400 square kilometers (540 square miles) in central Switzerland, Zurich University researchers said. They found the species in 122 of 3,500 locations tested over the past year. This is the first time we have proved that an invasive mosquito species is breeding and spreading in central Europe, said parasite expert Alexander Mathis. The Asian rock pool mosquito is native to Japan, Korea and China, but has also spread to North America. In western Europe, it has previously been detected in France and Belgium. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says lab experiments show the mosquito can transmit Japanese encephalitis and West Nile virus. Both diseases can cause serious harm in humans and are potentially fatal. In the United States, West Nile virus infected more than 1,300 people and killed 44 last year.In those areas where the Asian rock pool mosquito was detected it outnumbered the mosquito species most commonly found in Europe, the northern house mosquito or culex pipiens, Mathis said.

Unlike the northern house mosquito, which only preys on birds, the Asian rock pool mosquito draws blood from both humans and birds, who commonly carry West Nile virus, he said.So far West Nile virus hasn't been found in birds in central Europe, Mathis added, meaning there is currently no risk of human infection there. But he said public health officials should consider taking measures to prevent the Asian rock pool mosquito from spreading.Efforts are already under way in southern Europe to battle another foreign species, the Asian tiger mosquito. That species has been known to spread chikungunya fever — a virus which causes joint pain, headaches and rashes — and there are fears that it might be capable of transmitting more dangerous diseases like dengue and yellow fever. The mosquito's arrival has been blamed on international trade and travel, as well as global warming.

Setting the people up to die: A conspiracy of silence about swine flu natural remedies NaturalNews Thursday, August 27, 2009
http://www.prisonplanet.com/setting-the-people-up-to-die-a-conspiracy-of-silence-about-swine-flu-natural-remedies.html

It’s emblazoned across the front page of USA Today, just underneath a subhead declaring Michael Jackson was, indeed, killed by a drug overdose: Flu could infect half of USA.The article goes on to describe the predicted number of deaths expected in the U.S. (30,000 – 90,000 Americans) as well as the actions being taken by the government to protect Americans from the coming swine flu pandemic. That advice reads sort of like a comic book of health care advice for kindergarteners: Wash your hands, cover your mouth if you cough and let the grownups take care of the rest by injecting you with a vaccine. Curiously absent from all the health advice being handed out on the swine flu by the White House, the CDC, the WHO and even the FDA is any mention of Vitamin D or other natural remedies that offer enormous protections from influenza infections. The absence of this information from virtually all the advice being handed out to the American public is increasingly suspicious. If a pandemic flu is, indeed, threatening to infect half the U.S. population, and if most of the population is deficient in a nutrient known to strongly prevent influenza infections, wouldn’t it make good sense to make a few announcements encouraging Americans to raise their vitamin D levels throughout the coming winter? It is a well-known medical fact, of course, that influenza always gets worse during the winter months North of the equator and the summer months South of the equator (which are really called their winter months). This is because as sunlight hours lessen during the winter, the people living there become vitamin D deficient and are susceptible to influenza infections of all kinds. The information resources backing this are easy to find. Even our own NaturalPedia.com website reveals a large amount of information on natural defenses against influenza (http://www.naturalpedia.com/influen…). NaturalNews.com, of course, offers a wealth of articles on Vitamin D (http://www.naturalnews.com/vitamin_…).

In the realm of peer-reviewed medical literature, searching Google Scholar for influenza and vitamin D returns tens of thousands of results (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q…). In particular, one study appearing in these search results is entitled Epidemic influenza and vitamin D. It was published in 2006 in the journal Epidemiology and Infection (2006, 134:6:1129-1140 Cambridge University Press) and its abstract reads as follows:In 1981, R. Edgar Hope-Simpson proposed that a seasonal stimulus intimately associated with solar radiation explained the remarkable seasonality of epidemic influenza. Solar radiation triggers robust seasonal vitamin D production in the skin; vitamin D deficiency is common in the winter, and activated vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D, a steroid hormone, has profound effects on human immunity. 1,25(OH)2D acts as an immune system modulator, preventing excessive expression of inflammatory cytokines and increasing the oxidative burst potential of macrophages. Perhaps most importantly, it dramatically stimulates the expression of potent anti-microbial peptides, which exist in neutrophils, monocytes, natural killer cells, and in epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract where they play a major role in protecting the lung from infection. Volunteers inoculated with live attenuated influenza virus are more likely to develop fever and serological evidence of an immune response in the winter. Vitamin D deficiency predisposes children to respiratory infections. Ultraviolet radiation (either from artificial sources or from sunlight) reduces the incidence of viral respiratory infections, as does cod liver oil (which contains vitamin D). An interventional study showed that vitamin D reduces the incidence of respiratory infections in children. We conclude that vitamin D, or lack of it, may be Hope-Simpson’s seasonal stimulus.

Why the silence?
Vitamin D is perhaps the single most powerful nutrient in the known universe for preventing influenza, and yet the Obama White House won’t dare utter a word about it to the American people, even in the face of a potentially devastating global pandemic that could be largely halted by vitamin D.

It begs the question: Why the silence?

There are really only three possible explanations for why the White House and U.S. health authorities would refuse to tell the public about vitamin D as a smart defense against the influenza pandemic:Reason #1) They don’t know about vitamin D. This, of course, is impossible. The medical literature is saturated with respectable studies demonstrating the anti-viral and immune modulating effects of vitamin D. For someone in the field of infectious disease to be unaware of vitamin D’s protective benefits would be downright laughable. It would be like a car mechanic not knowing what a fuel filter was.Reason #2) They do know about vitamin D, and they want to tell people, but they don’t know how or don’t have the money. This explanation, too, is ridiculous. Telling the people the truth about vitamin D is as simple (and as free) as just calling a White House press conference, inviting a vitamin D expert like Dr. Michael Holick to say a few words, and putting the message out to the mainstream media. In 24 hours, all the newspaper headlines across the country could print headlines like, White House urges Americans to boost vitamin D before swine flu strikes. The whole nation could be properly informed about vitamin D in less than 72 hours.

But that will never happen. And why? Because of reason #3…Reason #3) They know about vitamin D but they are intentionally withholding information from the American people In essence, they want to keep the American people nutritionally illiterate so that they remain victims in the coming influenza crisis. Because of who’s involved in this (the White House, FDA, CDC, WHO and many others), it cannot be called anything other than a conspiracy of silence about influenza and vitamin D.What could be the purpose behind such a conspiracy of silence? Clearly its only purpose is to maximize profits to the drug companies and / or maximize the number of deaths that occur when the swine flu strikes North America this coming winter. But why, you might ask, would these so-called authorities wish to see more Americans die?

Health care reform via a viral pandemic
To answer that, just look at who is most likely to die from swine flu infections: The obese… the people who, generally speaking, are placing the greatest financial burden on the government-funded health care system. The coming swine flu pandemic has the potential to do what no politician could ever get away with: Slash health care spending virtually overnight by simply killing off those who burden the system the most.Call it Health Care Darwinism if you like. Survival of the fittest married with an evil plot. Let the most costly health care consumers die in a (planned?) pandemic, and suddenly your nation is pulled back from the brink of total financial collapse.
The White House just revised its budget numbers this week, by the way. Government deficit spending for this year is up over 300 percent from last year, reaching an eye-popping, mind-boggling $1.9 trillion in new debt in just a single year! This runaway debt spending is, by any honest calculation, simply unsustainable. It will destroy America’s future, leaving the nation penniless. To save America, something drastic must be done. Something as drastic as, say, killing off those who place the greatest cost burdens on the U.S. health care system (which represents roughly twenty percent of all U.S. government spending). So how do you really cut costs in America? Recognize that roughly one-fifth of U.S. government spending goes to support the disease industry. And the vast majority of that money is spent taking care of chronically ill individuals who are typically obese and nutrient deficient. Releasing a bio-engineered influenza virus into the wild is a sure way to cut health care spending in the long run by killing those who place the highest burdens on the health care system. While it costs a fortune to take care of a chronically ill patient for two decades, it costs a mere pittance to see them die in a hospital emergency room while they succumb to H1N1 influenza.

Swine flu, it might be said from a cold-hearted evil government point of view, is a cost-effective and quick way to slash health care spending without needing to take any responsibility for making such cuts yourself. Let the virus do the dirty work, killing off the most vulnerable in society and leaving more money behind for Big Government to get even bigger. Think governments couldn’t do this? Then you don’t know governments well enough. Now, in defense of the Obama administration, I very much doubt that President Barack Obama himself would be capable of masterminding such an evil plot to kill off the American people in a planned influenza pandemic. This is the kind of thing that usually takes place behind the scenes, where powerful men (far more powerful than Obama) meet in dark places to plan and plot the future of the world. If it is in their interests to see the population suffer through a pandemic, they will make sure one appears at the appropriate time.It could also be a joint arrangement between powerful corporations and Big Government. The corporate drug companies want to make money off the vaccine sales. The government wants to save money by killing off the top recipients of expensive health care services (who also wouldn’t burden Medicare down the road, either). By working together, they can both get what they want. One pandemic serves both masters, and it’s all funded by taxpayer dollars to boot!

This is still a theory, not proof
I can’t prove that such a plot is actually under way, by the way. When discussing conspiracy theories, I’m always careful to point out that I have no specific proof that such a nefarious plot actually exists. There is, however, quite a lot of supporting circumstantial evidence that should raise the eyebrows of anyone paying attention. For example, there is this training brochure that recently surfaced (http://www.new-fields.com/ISFC/broc…) which describes procedures for conducting morgue operations and activating fatality management operations.

This same document also describes training points that cover:

• Breakdown of public services
• Medical supplies shortages
• Unwillingness to follow government orders among other fascinating things. The conference this advertises was held August 19 – 20 in Washington D.C. by a company called New-Fields that holds, among other things, an Iraq Aviation & Defense Summit (http://www.new-fields.com/iraq_avia…) featuring senior U.S. military personnel and touting one to one meetings with Iraqi officials. This isn’t the first time a company with ties to the U.S. military has been found to be involved in the swine flu pandemic. My previous article on NaturalNews exposed the DynCorp / NIH patent link, revealing that a key influenza vaccine patent was jointly owned by the National Institutes of Health and a high-level private U.S. military contractor named DynCorp. You can read that article here: http://www.naturalnews.com/026779_s…

So what does it all mean? Like a lot of things, it just depends what you choose to believe.I don’t know if I believe the evil, nefarious conspiracy theory described as a possibility in this article. But neither do I trust my government (and I sure don’t trust public health officials). So I’m doing exactly what I recommend everybody else do: Take charge of your own swine flu defenses by boosting your nutrition and sunlight exposure. Store some food, water and other basic preparedness supplies just in case. Be prepared to survive and thrive during the coming pandemic, regardless of what happens around you.Just because everybody else is planning on becoming a victim of circumstance doesn’t mean you have to. With a little basic planning and some medical common sense, you can see yourself through this pandemic with ease. No sweat.

Read my pandemic preparedness report (if you haven’t already) to learn what top five anti-viral products I currently recommend for boosting your defenses against the swine flu: http://www.naturalnews.com/RR-FiveB…It’s a report that could literally help save your life.

Swine flu sends more blacks, Hispanics to hospital By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer – Thu Aug 27, 12:22 pm ET

ATLANTA – Swine flu was four times more likely to send blacks and Hispanics to the hospital than whites, according to a study in Chicago that offers one of the first looks at how the virus has affected different racial groups. The report echoes some unpublished information from Boston that found three out of four Bostonians hospitalized from swine flu were black or Hispanic. The cause for the difference is probably not genetic, health officials said. More likely, it's because blacks and Hispanics suffer disproportionately from asthma, diabetes and other health problems that make people more vulnerable to the flu. It's not clear if a racial or ethnic difference will hold up when more complete national data is available, one federal health official said. The findings are based on fairly small numbers of cases from the early days of the pandemic. We don't have anything definitive to say one group is more affected than another, said Dr. Daniel Jernigan of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Chicago findings, released Thursday, are believed to be the first published study to detail a racial or ethnic breakdown of swine flu's impact.Researchers looked at more than 1,500 lab-confirmed swine flu cases reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health from late April through late July.Blacks with swine flu were hospitalized at a rate of 9 per 100,000, and Hispanics at a rate of 8 per 100,000. For whites, the rate was 2 per 100,000, the study found.Earlier this month, Boston health officials released some unpublished information that found three out of four Bostonians hospitalized with swine flu were black or Hispanic. It's very disturbing, said Barbara Ferrer of the Boston Public Health Commission, speaking about the higher rates of minority swine flu hospitalizations. But intuitively it's understandable, because we have tremendous inequities in most areas of health, said Ferrer, the agency's executive director.

Also, experts noted that the Chicago and Boston data represent limited information from only two cities and only the first two or three months of the pandemic. The unpredictable manner of swine flu outbreaks means some parts of the city were hit before others — a sequence that may have little to do with race.I think it reflected more the neighborhoods the disease was first going through, said Jernigan, a CDC flu expert. This fall, the government will be doing national surveys to better track swine flu trends. That should provide more reliable information about how the virus is affecting different groups of people, he said.On the Net:CDC report: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr

Swine flu rises at US colleges as students return By DORIE TURNER, Associated Press Writer – Fri Aug 28, 4:28 am ET

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech freshman Elise Woodall was met with a message scrawled on the bathroom mirror of her dorm when she moved in two weeks ago: Wash your hands. Swine is not fine.Colleges across the country are seeing spikes in the number of students with suspected cases of swine flu as dorms fill up and classes begin for the fall semester.Nobody wants to get sick because missing classes is a pain, said Woodall, 18, a biomedical engineering major from Marietta, Ga.While the increases were expected and colleges say they were ready for the coughing, sneezing and feverish students before move-in day, health experts say hundreds more could get sick as the virus winds its way through college campuses. At Georgia Tech in Atlanta, classes are in full swing for the university's 20,000 students, and so is the highly contagious H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.The university has had 150 suspected cases of the virus in the two weeks since students moved back to campus. At the University of Kansas, nearly 200 students have reported having flu-like symptoms in the last week or so, spokesman Todd Cohen said. University of Tennessee administrators are estimating about 100 suspected swine flu cases on campus, spokesman Jay Mayfield said.

The University of Alabama had more than 50 cases of flu reported on the first day of classes last week. At Texas Christian University, 10 students were diagnosed with swine flu on the first day of class Monday. We're finding out for the first time in a long time how quickly a contagious disease can move, said Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs at Texas Christian. To get ready for the expected outbreak, colleges stocked up on hand sanitizing gel and Tamiflu — an anti-viral pill — while others have designated empty dorms where sick students can be isolated. Some campuses have developed flu kits with items like tissues, thermometers and box lunches for students in isolation.Students have been getting regular e-mails from administrators reminding them to wash their hands frequently, stay away from sick friends and isolate themselves if they develop flu-like symptoms. We all knew this was going to happen, said Liz Rachun, spokeswoman for the University of Georgia health clinic, which has seen nearly 50 suspected swine flu cases in the last two weeks. We stocked up on masks and we have doctors in place.Health experts predicted swine flu cases would spike once the school year began and that colleges and elementary and secondary schools would see an increase in cases. Most campuses won't know for certain how many confirmed swine flu cases they have this year because many states are no longer routinely running tests on every suspected case. Still, many administrators say they're treating every case as if it's swine flu to help stem the spread of the disease.Health officials say the concern is that swine flu is very contagious and spreads quickly once it is introduced to a population. That means hundreds more could get sick in the next few weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta recommends students with flu symptoms — fever, cough, sneezing, chills, aches, sometimes diarrhea or vomiting — stay home from class. The mere fact you have lots of people in close proximity with each other results in the virus being transmitted from person to person, said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.I don't think we're surprised by the fact influenza is returning to these campuses. What is concerning to us is people becoming complacent about this and not taking the steps we know can protect them.Associated Press videojournalist Rich Matthews in Fort Worth, Texas, contributed to this report. ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Australia sweats through long, hot winter Thu Aug 27, 7:08 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Drought-hit Australia has endured an exceptionally hot winter, with abnormal temperatures shattering records that had in some places stood since World War II, official figures show.In a special climate statement released late Wednesday, the weather bureau said maximum temperatures in August were broadly three degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the long-term average.August 2009 is almost certain to be Australia?s warmest August on record, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.Taken with above-average temperatures in June and July, the bureau said the exceptional August figures would be sufficient to lift average winter temperatures to record or near-record levels. The heatwave smashed records across the country, most notably in the subtropical northeast region and drought-struck areas in the country's centre. Some coastal towns recorded their hottest day for 2009 during August, surpassing temperatures reached at the height of Australia's scorching summer months.Records dating back to World War II toppled in the New South Wales Outback towns of Bourke and Walgett, where new August highs of 34.4 degrees Celsius exceeded benchmarks set in 1946, the bureau said.

The mercury soared as high as 37 degrees at Boulia, in the Queensland Outback.

A record dry spell was also likely to be recorded there, with an average of just 1.65 millimetres (0.07 inches) of rain between July and August, the bureau warned.
According to government analysis Australia faces its driest, hottest summer in a decade this year, with an El Nino weather pattern expected to bring less rain and higher temperatures.El Nino, which is caused by warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean, results in extensive drought in the west Pacific and has been associated with a spike in wildfire activity.Entire towns and more than 2,000 homes were razed during a firestorm on February 7 in Victoria state, killing 173 people in Australia's worst natural disaster of modern times.Victoria and its neighbouring states are in the grip of a decade-long drought, and experienced a run of record-breaking temperatures in the weeks before the fires, leaving uncleared bushland tinder-dry.

Dangerous citrus pest found in California By MICHELLE RINDELS, Associated Press Writer – Fri Aug 28, 7:30 am ET

LOS ANGELES – A pest that can carry a fatal citrus disease has been found in Los Angeles County, stoking fears that California's $1.6 billion citrus industry could be hit by a potentially devastating threat.Officials at the California Department of Food and Agriculture confirmed this week they found an Asian citrus psyllid in a trap in a homeowner's citrus tree in the Echo Park neighborhood, farther north in the state than ever before. The discovery came shortly after officials confirmed the aphid-like insect had been found in Orange County. It had been confined to the state's southernmost San Diego and Imperial counties. This pest can travel, and it can do so quickly and easily, said Ted Batkin, president of the California-based Citrus Research Board. He has called the pest and the vicious disease it can carry the greatest threat in the citrus industry's modern history.Psyllids in Orange County tested negative for huanglongbing, also known as citrus greening disease, which spoils the flavor of the fruit and ultimately kills the tree. But fears are swirling that California could face the same fate as Florida, where the psyllid was first detected in 1998 and citrus greening was discovered in 2005.Since then, CDFA said, the disease has spread to all the state's 30 citrus-producing counties and is laying waste to Florida's $9.3 billion citrus industry, which is largely based on orange juice production. The pest has not yet reached California's central valley, where about three-fourths of the state's citrus production takes place. But Batkin worries the psyllid will close in on L.A. County's northern neighbor, Ventura County.

We're about as concerned as we can be,Batkin said.

Ventura County is a center for orange and lemon growing and home to Santa Paula, a city that calls itself the Citrus Capital of the World and hosted its 42nd annual citrus festival in July.Steve Lyle, spokesman for the CDFA, said the agency plans to continue its trapping efforts and will impose quarantines in at least parts of Orange and Los Angeles counties. During a quarantine, officials restrict the movement of plant materials out of the quarantine zone. We're doing all we can to pinpoint the full extent of the problem and protect our state's vital citrus industry, CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura said in a statement.BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — About 2 million acres of North Dakota cropland — or roughly 10 percent — did not get planted this year because of flooding caused by spring snowmelt and heavy rains, according to federal Farm Service Agency estimates. The agency that administers federal farm programs says 2 million acres of unseeded land would be the third-highest amount in state records that go back 15 years, behind 3.9 million acres in 1999 and 2.1 million in 2001.The number of unplanted acres is too small to affect crop prices nationwide and likely has already been factored into government production estimates based on farmer surveys closely watched by the commodity markets. But 2 million acres would be a big blow to farmers in North Dakota and the state's economy. It's the difference between having a crop to sell at market vs. a smaller payment on your ... crop insurance, said Aaron Krauter, state FSA director. Every producer out there, they want a crop to sell.

George Balsdon has been farming near Osnabrock in that county since the 1940s.

This is the wettest I've ever seen, said Balsdon, 77. He and his sons were able to seed only about half of their 8,000 acres of wheat and canola last spring. We just got going (with planting) and we got a 3-inch rain. Then we just got going again and we got a 2-inch rain. We didn't get half the farm in,he said. A lot of neighbors didn't get anything in.The FSA estimates show corn took the biggest hit from flooding in North Dakota, with about 588,000 acres going unseeded, followed by wheat with 488,000 acres unplanted and soybeans with 355,000 unseeded acres.

Egypt: Israeli freeze must include east Jerusalem AUG 28,09

STOCKHOLM – Egypt's foreign minister says east Jerusalem must be included in a freeze of Israeli settlement activity before Middle East peace talks can restart.Ahmed Aboul-Gheit told reporters in Stockholm on Friday that Jerusalem is Arab and it will continue to be so.He said the Arab world expects the area to be included in a moratorium on Israeli settlements. The Obama administration has hinted it may be backing down on its insistence that Israel halt all settlement activity as a condition for restarting peace talks with the Palestinians.U.S. officials have denied Israeli media reports that Washington has agreed to leave East Jerusalem out of the agreement and settle for a nine- to 12-month freeze in the West Bank.

Turkey can avert a tragedy on the Tigris By Joanne Leedom-Ackerman – Wed Aug 26, 5:00 am ET

Washington – In the southeastern corner of Turkey near its borders with Iraq and Syria, environmentalists, human rights organizations, and archaeologists recently won a battle in the effort to avert a cultural tragedy. Swiss, German, and Austrian firms pulled out of their contract with the Turkish government to build a dam that would flood and destroy a historical ancient city, harm ecosystems downstream, and displace thousands. To permanently protect this area though, it should be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Ilisu Dam, a cornerstone in a much project to develop Turkey's electrical and water capacities, is the largest and the most controversial of the 22 dams and 19 power plants scheduled in the $32 billion Southeast Anatolia Project. At the heart of the controversy is the town of Hasankeyf, carved into the limestone cliffs above the Tigris River. Hasankeyf is reputed to be one of the oldest continuous settlements on earth, at least 10,000 years old, with relics found this summer that may date it to 15,000 years old.In the Kurdish region of southeastern Anatolia, Hasankeyf has hosted at least nine civilizations, including the Assyrians, the Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Mongols, and the Ottomans. On a central trading route in ancient Mesopotamia, Hasankeyf boasts more than 4,000 caves; 300 medieval monuments; 83 archaeological sites with ruins, including Hasankeyf Castle, built by the Byzantines in AD 363; and historic tombs and mosques. Its cultural and archaeological value is priceless.

Today the hillsides are dotted with artisans' stalls, children on donkeys, and caves with restaurants inside. If the Ilisu hydroelectric dam is constructed as planned 50 miles downstream, much of Hasankeyf – historic caves, ruins, and all – will be buried under 400 feet of water. The flooding will also submerge 80 surrounding villages and displace tens of thousands of people in what would be Turkey's second-largest reservoir. While the government has said that it will relocate people and preserve some of the antiquities of Hasankeyf, residents of the region say the compensation isn't enough. The European firms, which revoked their $1.6 billion loans in July, say that Turkey has not sufficiently met World Bank standards to preserve the environment, the population, and the culture in its planning for the Ilisu Dam. The Turkish government claims that it will proceed with the dam anyway. The issues are complex. Advocates and opponents cast the debate as preservation of the past challenging progress for the future, conservation versus energy, national interests versus minority Kurdish interests, nationalism versus the interests of neighboring countries. The government argues that the dam will bring irrigation and power to the region. Opponents maintain that much of the electricity generated will go to other parts of the country.Iraq has protested vehemently against Turkey damming the Tigris River just upstream and further restricting the water flow across the border. There is also the geopolitical drama of the European partnerships withdrawing and Turkey potentially pursuing other partners such as China and Russia. The one clarity in this widening controversy is that Hasankeyf should be preserved.

The city has already been listed by the World Monument Fund as one of the world's 100 most endangered sites. In 1978, the Turkish government designated Hasankeyf as a site for conservation, legally protecting it, and the government halted an earlier attempt at a dam project. However, after the fighting in the southeast in the 1980s and '90s with Kurdish guerrillas, Ankara reversed its position and approved the hydroelectric dam.The Turkish government should once again take steps to preserve this cultural treasure for itself and for the rest of the world. Preserving Hasankeyf would go a long way in demonstrating the government's goodwill to the citizens of the region. Turkey can develop and progress into the future without washing away this jewel of the past.If the Turkish government is still determined to erect the Ilisu Dam, it should at least modify the size and specifications so that Hasankeyf survives. It should also put in an application to designate the city as a UNESCO World Heritage site. By taking these two initiatives, the Turkish government would take a major step in honoring its own history and allowing the future to crest alongside of, but not flood, what has gone before.Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, a novelist, is a former reporter for the Monitor and a former international secretary of International PEN. She visited Hasankeyf during an International PEN Conference in nearby Diyarbakir.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

REVELATION 13:16-18

Canada home prices seen rising, sales stabilizing By Ka Yan Ng – Thu Aug 27, 4:58 pm ET

TORONTO (Reuters) – Canadian resale home prices are likely to rise, not fall, and sales will nearly match those of last year, the Canadian Real Estate Association said in a revised forecast on Thursday.A much stronger showing in the second quarter, and a solid start to the third quarter, prompted CREA to predict a dramatically smaller decline in sales of previously owned homes for 2009, and for prices to edge up.It said the current resale market was like "night and day" compared with the beginning of the year. The group said its new forecast for a 1.5 percent rise to C$309,500 ($283,945) for the average home price contrasts with a call for a 5.2 percent drop to C$287,700 in its May outlook.CREA also revised its forecast for 2009 sales to 432,600 units, a 0.4 percent decline from 2008 when 434,477 units changed hands.

That is a much smaller retreat than the May forecast, when the association expected sales would drop 14.7 percent from 2008 -- itself a revision from a previous prediction of a 16.9 percent drop in sales. The recovery in Canadian housing I think was beyond the imagination of even the most strident optimist. It truly is remarkable and I think that revision just reflects it, said Doug Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Capital Markets. The Canadian residential property market was hit hard in the final quarter of 2008 as the recession choked off demand, and accounted for more than half of the decline in transactions from 2007, the record high year. Sales tumbled 17.1 percent in 2008 from 2007.The data from the last six months has increasingly shown that people are venturing back into the market. Low mortgage rates and signs that the worst of the economic slump is over are stimulating demand. There has also been a turnaround in consumer sentiment, underscored by Thursday's report from the Conference Board of Canada that showed confidence rose in August for the sixth straight month.British Columbia and Ontario are now expected to see an annual increase in sales activity, while CREA cut its forecast declines for several provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec.Nearly all provinces are expected to see a higher average price this year, except Alberta, where the average is seen falling 4.4 percent. British Columbia is expected to be relatively stable with a 0.1 percent dip.For 2010, the average price nationally is expected to rise 2.1 percent to C$315,900, while sales activity is seen gaining 5.3 percent to 455,400 units.(Editing by Rob Wilson)

UN chief urges world to back climate deal AUG 28,09

VIENNA – The U.N. chief is urging the world to seal the deal on climate change ahead of a major conference on global warming in December.U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the threat posed by greenhouse gas emissions underscores how the world's nations must all take action. Ban says the outcome of the Copenhagen conference will impact the planet for generations to come.Ban says he also plans to visit the North Pole soon — and he hopes that will send an important message to the international community about the need to tighten pollution controls.

He says the future of humanity and planet Earth are at stake.Ban spoke Friday at the U.N. complex in Vienna, which is marking its 30th anniversary as a headquarters for four of the world body's agencies.

European economic confidence improves: survey AUG 28,09

BRUSSELS (AFP) – European business and consumer confidence firmed in August for a fifth month running, an EU survey showed on Friday, adding to a recent string of encouraging news for Europe's struggling economies. The European Commission's economic sentiment indicator for the 16 nations using the euro single currency rose to 80.6 points from 76 points in July, continuing a gradual climb away from a record low 64.6 points in March. The figure defied the expectations of analysts, polled by Dow Jones Newswires, who had predicted a more modest rise to 78 points.Recovery of the industrial confidence indicator continued, backed by a strong increase in production expectations and manufacturers' assessment of order books, the EU's executive body said in a statement. However, it noted that stocks of finished goods, production expectations and order books remain well below their long-term averages.

The long-term average rate, since 1990, is 100.

Among the larger EU economies, the greatest signs of improvement in confidence were seen in Britain, up 9.7 points, followed by the Netherlands, 7.6 points, and European economic powerhouse Germany which saw economic sentiment rise by 5.1 points in August.

There were also noteworthy gains in Poland, Italy and Spain.

The commission said the increase was due to a general improvement across the board, with only retail trade a little sluggish. The services sector gained considerably, while industry continued to climb out of the trough from March. In the wider 27-nation European Union, the economic sentiment indicator rose to 80.9 points from 75 points in July.Analysts said the figures bolstered hopes for a recovery. All in all, today?s indicators will be an important part of the ECB's (European Central Bank) briefing files for next week, said Carsten Brzeski at Global Economics.Central bankers will be facing a somewhat changed economic environment: the worst is over and the economy is stabilising,he said, but warned: the labour market and a possible credit crunch are clear speed bumps on the road to recovery. The commission's separate business climate indicator also continued to recover, improving for a fifth consecutive month with a rise to negative 2.21 points from minus 2.70 points in July.Improvement was particularly strong in production trends, while both order books and export order books continued to improve from the trough reached in June.Managers' opinion of stocks of finished goods improved as well, even though the level of stocks was still considered excessive, the commission said.Recent data has shown European factory orders up, with the eurozone monthly trade surplus doubling.Germany and France have lumbered out of recession and very nearly brought the rest of the eurozone with them.

However amid fears of double-dip recession, EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso warned that Europe's economy has not made a firm recovery from the crisis and the situation remains very volatile.

Oil prices rise towards $73 AUG 28,09

LONDON (AFP) – Oil prices edged towards 73 dollars on Friday, extending the previous day's rally as the market was buoyed by rising equities and a weakening US dollar, analysts said.New York's main futures contract, light sweet crude for October delivery, rose 21 cents to 72.70 dollars a barrel in afternoon trade.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in October gained 34 cents to 72.85 dollars.Crude futures had rebounded Thursday after two days of losses, lifted by a weaker dollar late in the session and rallying US share prices. The catalyst behind the recovery was based as usual on stocks flipping back into positive territory combined with a renewed weakening in the US dollar, said ODL Securities analyst Marius Paun.Wall Street's blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.39 percent to 9,580.63 points, ending higher for an eighth straight session and extending its longest winning streak in 28 months.European equities also rallied Friday, boosted by strong gains on Wall Street as investors digested news that the British recession was not as deep as expected in the second quarter.London's benchmark FTSE 100 index of leading shares was up 0.98 percent to 4,916.54 points in late afternoon deals.British gross domestic product (GDP) shrank 0.7 percent in the second quarter of 2009 compared with the first three months of the year, official data showed on Friday.

That was a modest improvement on the previous estimate of a 0.8-percent contraction.

Oil also won support from a weaker dollar, which makes dollar-priced crude cheaper for buyers using stronger currencies and therefore tends to stimulate demand and lift prices. The dollar fell on Friday against the euro after more strong eurozone economic data, traders said.Approaching midday trade in London, the European single currency increased to 1.4358 dollars from 1.4345 dollars in New York late on Thursday.Earlier this week, New York oil had spiked to 75.00 dollars on Tuesday for the first time in 10 months after strong US consumer confidence data, but fell back on profit-taking after failing to break through that key barrier.Oil lost more ground on Wednesday after official data showed a surprise jump in crude inventories in the United States, the world's biggest energy consuming nation. The US Department of Energy (DoE) said American crude stockpiles rose 200,000 barrels to 343.8 million in the week ending August 21, confounding expectations for a 600,000-barrel drop.

Slow credit flows spark worries over EU recovery
LUCIA KUBOSOVA Today AUG 28,09 @ 09:21 CET

Bank credit to businesses in the eurozone shrank further last month despite current favorable conditions on the money markets, sparking fears over the true state of the economy in Europe.Loans to businesses and households in July slowed to the record lowest annual growth ever, according to figures released by the European Central Bank (ECB), the main financial institution of the 16-strong currency union, released on Thursday (27 August). In the private sector, credit provided rose by just 0.6 percent compared with July 2008 while economists expected a 1.3 percent annual expansion. In June, loans to businesses amounted to the then minimum of 1.5 percent.Economists interpret the results as a proof that banks do not provide the cheap money offered by the ECB and other institutions automatically to firms and households which could kick off investments and stronger consumption. Since the economic crisis broke out last year, the Frankfurt-based bank has pumped a significant amount of liquidity into the eurozone's banking system, including €442 billion in one-year loans in late June. Leading politicians and financial authorities urged banks to lend the extra cash further for the benefit of the real economy. But Thursday's figures illustrate how fragile the ongoing recovery is,said Carsten Brzeski from Dutch bank ING, as quoted by AFP. Of course, a strong slowdown in credit growth is quite normal when the economy is in the middle of a severe recession but the credit cycle needs to follow improved sentiment soon to get the recovery really going.

Several eurozone countries are currently reporting a boost in confidence in their economies both among consumers and firms but they are still cautious about borrowing new money for investments.Germany, as the key motor of Europe's economy, saw a jump in positive sentiment among shoppers for the fifth consecutive month in August, according to GFK survey published on Thursday.Due to stable and even falling prices, consumers are currently left with more in their pockets, the GfK said in a statement, adding: Currently these developments are apparently displacing possible fears about job security.Similarly, the business confidence in the EU's biggest economy has also grown stronger for five months in a row. Along with France, Germany recorded a minor growth in GDP last month, surprisingly stepping out of recession, and sparking hopes for a broader European recovery. But the poor lending figures might prevent ECB decision-makers from slowly increasing record low interest rates as a result of other positive signs from the economy, economists suggest.

Australia approves China, India gas project Wed Aug 26, 2:25 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia Wednesday approved a massive energy project that will supply natural gas worth tens of billions of dollars to China and India, giving new impetus to its resources boom.Environment Minister Peter Garrett imposed 28 conditions to protect wildlife but said he saw no reason to block the Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant off Western Australia, allowing it to clear the final regulatory hurdle.

The project is a joint venture by Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil, which has signed a record 41 billion US dollar contract with Chinese giant PetroChina and another worth 21 billion dollars with India's Petronet.I've considered it very carefully, I don't believe that there will be unacceptable (environmental) impacts and, as a consequence of that, I have made my decision today,Garrett told reporters. He said the conditions included measures to protect endangered turtles and other species on nearby Barrow Island and to minimise noise and light emissions. It is acceptable for the expansion to go ahead subject to the conditions,he said. The public can have confidence that the environment of Barrow (Island) will be properly protected.Garrett said he expected Chevron and the venture's other partners would be more than willing to meet the conditions. We have had those discussions with the company and it is the case that there is agreement on the basis of the conditions that I've put forward, and I welcome that,he said. The Gorgon field, thought to hold more than 40 trillion cubic feet of gas, is expected to create thousands of jobs and pump billions of dollars into Australia's economy.

Chevron, majority partner in the project, welcomed Garrett's approval and said a final investment decision would be made in the coming months. The Gorgon project is Australia's largest single resource project and is set to deliver significant economic benefits and create around 10,000 indirect and direct jobs during peak construction, said Roy Krzywosinski, the company's Australian managing director. He said the plant was globally and nationally significant, with an economic life of at least 40 years, adding it had been sited to minimise the environmental impact.

Consumer groups mixed on EU switch to new light bulbs
LUCIA KUBOSOVA 27.08.2009 @ 09:21 CET

Leading consumer groups have voiced disapproval over the full switch-over to new energy-efficient light bulbs, due to take place across the EU from next week. From Tuesday (1 September), 100-watt versions of classic, incandescent bulbs will be banned from shops in the 27 EU member states in the first phase of a process that will take several years. The most widely used bulbs, the 40-watt and 25-watt versions, will disappear in 2012 while all energy-inefficient bulbs will be removed by 2016.The move comes as a result of a decision by EU leaders in March 2007. The European Commission estimates that some 40 terawatt hours of energy per year could be saved once the switch-over is completed.New light bulbs last eight to 15 times longer and can save up to 80 percent of the energy used on lighting in Europeans' homes, reducing their bills, as well as helping in the fight against climate change.Consumer groups have hailed the financial and environment benefits of the gradual phase-out but also warn of drawbacks, such as the absence of provisions for people with health problems, including light sensitivity. We call on the European Commission to take immediate measures to ensure that people who rely on incandescent light bulbs will be able to buy these bulbs until suitable alternative lighting technologies are available,BEUC, the Brussels-based European consumers' rights organisation, said in a statement.

The group also pointed to concerns about the health risks from the high mercury content of the new bulbs. We urge the commission to lower the limit values for mercury and to introduce a better recycling system. Although the current threshold is set at 5 mg of mercury per bulb, the best available technology enables the bulb to work with only 1-2 mg,Stephen Russell from ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardisation, said.A recent survey among Austrians showed the real affect of consumer fears about the new technology bulbs. In a poll by UFH, a Vienna-based firm that disposes of used electronic devices, released on Thursday (27 August), 64 percent of respondents said the new EU guideline phasing out classic light bulbs was nonsensical, Wiener Zeitung reported.Over a half of Austrian interviewees (60.4%) said they were poorly informed about energy-saving bulbs while 43 percent said the new bulbs lacked variety in terms of design and size. Some 53.6 percent of respondents said they feared the breaking of one of the new bulbs could threaten their health because of mercury contamination.

Federal Reserve Says Disclosing Loans Will Hurt Banks (Update1)
By Mark Pittman

Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve argued yesterday that identifying the financial institutions that benefited from its emergency loans would harm the companies and render the central bank’s planned appeal of a court ruling moot. The Fed’s board of governors asked Manhattan Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska to delay enforcement of her Aug. 24 decision that the identities of borrowers in 11 lending programs must be made public by Aug. 31. The central bank wants Preska to stay her order until the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York can hear the case. The immediate release of these documents will destroy the board’s claims of exemption and right of appellate review, the motion said. The institutions whose names and information would be disclosed will also suffer irreparable harm. The Fed’s ability to effectively manage the current, and any future, financial crisis would be impaired, according to the motion. It said significant harms could befall the U.S. economy as well.

The central bank didn’t say when it would file its appeal.Fed lawyer Kit Wheatley told Preska in a conference call today that she did not know how long it would take for the Fed board to search the New York Fed for records. We really don’t know what’s in New York,Wheatley said.We don’t control the system of record-keeping in New York.

The Standard

The Fed’s lawyer went on to say that she did not know what records would fall under a delegated function, which would be a task assigned to the New York Fed.Preska interrupted Wheatley, saying that Ms. Wheatley, I held that’s not the standard. You didn’t search under the regulation. You’re supposed to search under the regulation.

Preska scheduled another conference call for 2:30 p.m. today to discuss the schedule for a search of the New York Fed.Nobody is going to deny you your right to an appeal, Preska said on the call,We’re going to do it expeditiously, not in a piecemeal fashion and hand it all off to the Second Circuit. The Fed has refused to name the financial firms it lent to or disclose the amounts or the assets put up as collateral under the emergency programs, saying disclosure might set off a run by depositors and unsettle shareholders.Bloomberg LP, the New York-based company majority-owned by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, sued on Nov. 7 under the Freedom of Information Act on behalf of its Bloomberg News unit.

Public Interest

Our argument is that the public interest in disclosure outweighs the banks’ interest in secrecy, said Thomas Golden, a lawyer with New York-based Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP who represents Bloomberg.Preska’s Aug. 24 ruling rejected the Fed’s argument that the records should remain private because they are trade secrets and would scare customers into pulling their deposits. What has the Fed got to hide? said Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who sponsored a bill to require the Fed to submit to an audit by the Government Accountability Office. The time has come for the Fed to stop stonewalling and hand this information over to the public,he said in an e-mail.The Clearing House Association LLC, an industry-owned group in New York that processes payments between banks, filed a declaration that accompanied the request for a stay.

Negative Consequences

Experience in the banking industry has shown that when customers and market participants hear negative rumors about a bank, negative consequences inevitably flow,Norman Nelson, vice president and general counsel for the group, said in the document. Our members have accessed the discount window with the understanding that the Fed will not disclose information about their borrowing, especially their identity.Members of the Clearing House are ABN Amro Holding NV, Bank of America Corp., Bank of New York Mellon Corp., Citigroup Inc.Deutsche Bank AG, HSBC Holdings Plc, JPMorgan Chase Inc., UBS AG, U.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo & Co.The case is Bloomberg LP v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 08-CV-9595, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan). To contact the reporter on this story: Mark Pittman in New York at mpittman@bloomberg.net

Hudson: The Financial Parasites Have Killed the American Economy, and They Are Sucking as Much Money Out as They Can Before Jumping Ship George Washington Blog
Thursday, August 27, 2009

Michael Hudson is a highly-regarded economist. He is a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, who has advised the U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Latvian governments as well as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. He is a former Wall Street economist at Chase Manhattan Bank who also helped establish the world’s first sovereign debt fund.Hudson has frequently described Wall Street as parasitic. For example, in a 2003 interview, Hudson said:The problem with parasites is not merely that they siphon off the food and nourishment of their host, crippling its reproductive power, but that they take over the host’s brain as well. The parasite tricks the host into thinking that it is feeding itself.

Something like this is happening today as the financial sector is devouring the industrial sector. Finance capital pretends that its growth is that of industrial capital formation. That is why the financial bubble is called wealth creation, as if it were what progressive economic reformers envisioned a century ago. They condemned rent and monopoly profit, but never dreamed that the financiers would end up devouring landlord and industrialist alike. Emperors of Finance have trumped Barons of Property and Captains of Industry.More recently, Hudson said:You can think of the financial sector as being wrapped around the real economy, almost like a parasite, and that’s why it’s been called parasitic for so long. The financial sector extracts interest from the economy, the property sector extracts economic rent, as do monopolies. Now the key thing about parasites, is that it’s not simply that they extract nourishment from the host. The parasite takes over the host’s brain, to make it think it’s part of the economy, to make it think it’s part of the host’s own body, and, in fact, that’s it almost like a child of the host, to be protected. And that’s what the financial sector has done today. You have Obama coming out and saying,We have to save the banks in order to save the real economy. The fact is, you can’t serve both the parasite and the host.

And see this.On August 10th, Hudson went even further. Specifically, he said:The giant financial institutions have already killed their host – the real American economy .Since they realize that the American economy is dead, they are trying to suck as much blood out of America as possible while the corpse is still warm
Because the American economy is dead, their plan is to soon jump to another host. They will ship all of their money overseas.

Is Unemployment the Worst Since the Great Depression? By Matthew Bandyk – Thu Aug 27, 4:27 pm ET

The Great Recession is the name that has stuck for the economic decline that began in late 2007. But there's some reason to think that using the word recession is being kind. The U.S. gross domestic product has shrunk 3.9 percent in the past year, the worst drop since the Great Depression. Plenty of observers are willing to say that this recession is much deeper than anything we've seen since the 1930s--including the big dip in the early 1980s, generally accepted as the other candidate for the worst recession since the Great Depression.I think it's way worse today, says Ridgely Evers of Tapit Partners, a longtime entrepreneur and venture capitalist who founded the software company Netbooks (now known as WorkingPoint). In the recession of 1981 and 1982,people recognized it as a dip. [Today,] nobody thinks we are going to come back out in relatively short order. This recession seems to have dragged on longer. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the U.S. economy was in recession from July 1981 to November 1982--16 months. But the current recession started in December 2007, says the NBER, so it's already longer than the last big one.

[See Why the Housing Rebound Could Take 20 Years.]The NBER defines a recession based on the all-encompassing gross domestic product figure. That economy-wide statistic may not mean much to the average American. In other words, the question What is the economy's output? usually doesn't matter as much as How hard is it to find a job? When we look at that question, how does the Great Recession compare? The unemployment rate is a murky number. It seems simple enough to look at the national unemployment figures released every month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In July, that number was 9.4 percent. At the peak of the early 80s recession--December 1982--unemployment hit 10.8 percent. So where's the murkiness? The problem is that many of the people one would think of as unemployed are not included in this unemployment rate. For one, the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count unemployed people who have been discouraged by the labor market and have given up looking for work. You are counted as a discouraged worker if you are available to work, want to work, and tried to look for work in the past year but gave up within four weeks for reasons including the belief that no work is available. The fact that the national unemployment rate excludes these discouraged workers has led many observers to believe it does not reflect the real level of unemployment.Ask the average person if he or she is unemployed, and there is little hesitation in giving you an answer, but that may not agree with government definitions, says John Williams, an economist who examines government statistics at shadowstats.com.

Other people who aren't counted in the official number are those who have been forced by the economy to work part time. The number of workers who wanted full-time jobs but could find only part-time work was 1.8 million last month, which amounts to 1.3 percent of the labor force. Still, that's not as bad as December 1982, when forced part-time workers accounted for 3 percent of the labor force. What happens when you start counting all these people who have been heavily battered by the labor market? The Bureau of Labor Statistics has another rate that includes marginally affected workers and part-time workers. That number, referred to as U-6 because of its identification in bureaureports, was 16.3 percent last month--nearly 7 percentage points higher than the official unemployment rate. What's more, the number of people who have given up on finding work has been steadily rising over the past few months, from 685,000 in May to 796,000 in July.If you have that number of people leaving the workforce, that seems to me a serious problem, says economist John Lott. Many people are giving up because the labor market is so bad--but how bad historically? A U-6 rate of more than 16 percent certainly does not compare to the Great Depression, when a quarter of the workforce was unemployed. And Williams points out that a much larger number of workers were agricultural workers in the 1930s. These farm workers are not included in today's statistics. So, by his estimates, nonfarm unemployment was at 35 percent in 1933). Trying to compare that U-6 number with the early 80s recession gets a bit tricky. The U-6 measurement did not come into use until 1994. Before that, the Bureau of Labor Statistics used a broader measurement, referred to as U-7, to figure out the number of unemployed plus workers dropping out of the labor force. In 1982, U-7 hit a peak of 15.3 percent, below the current U-6 of 16.3 percent. But 1982 should probably look even better compared with the labor market of today. U-7 overestimates the number of discouraged workers compared with how we measure them today. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics started asking people in surveys if they were actually available to work. These and other changes reduced the measurement of discouraged workers by 50 percent, according to some estimates. So if you care not just about people who meet the official definition of unemployed but also about people who are dropping out of the labor force, 2009 seems to be trailing 1982 in terms of the health of the labor market. Williams says that when he takes into consideration people who haven't looked for work in more than a year because they can't find jobs, the real unemployment rate today goes all the way up to 20.6 percent by his calculations. It won't take much to get it to the worst since the Great Depression,he says.

Real US unemployment rate at 16 pct: Fed official
Published: Wednesday August 26, 2009

The real US unemployment rate is 16 percent if persons who have dropped out of the labor pool and those working less than they would like are counted, a Federal Reserve official said Wednesday. If one considers the people who would like a job but have stopped looking -- so-called discouraged workers -- and those who are working fewer hours than they want, the unemployment rate would move from the official 9.4 percent to 16 percent, said Atlanta Fed chief Dennis Lockhart. He underscored that he was expressing his own views, which did do not necessarily reflect those of my colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee, the policy-setting body of the central bank.

Lockhart pointed out in a speech to a chamber of commerce in Chattanooga, Tennessee that those two categories of people are not taken into account in the Labor Department's monthly report on the unemployment rate. The official July jobless rate was 9.4 percent.Lockhart, who heads the Atlanta, Georgia, division of the Fed, is the first central bank official to acknowledge the depth of unemployment amid the worst US recession since the Great Depression.Lockhart said the US economy was improving but still fragile, and the beginning stages of a sluggish recovery were underway. My forecast for a slow recovery implies a protracted period of high unemployment, he said, adding that it would be difficult to stimulate jobs through additional public spending.Further fiscal stimulus has been mentioned, but the full effects of the first stimulus package are not yet clear, and the concern over adding to the federal deficit and the resulting national debt is warranted,he said.President Barack Obama's administration has resisted calls for more public spending, arguing that the 787-billion-dollar stimulus passed in February needs time to work its way through the economy.Lockhart noted that construction and manufacturing had been particularly hard hit in the recession that began in December 2007 and predicted some jobs were gone for good.Prior to the recession, he said, construction and manufacturing combined accounted for slightly more than 15 percent of employment. But during the recession, their job losses made up more than 40 percent of all US job losses.

In my view, it is unlikely that we will see a return of jobs lost in certain sectors, such as manufacturing,he said.In a similar vein, the recession has been so deep in construction that a reallocation of workers is likely to happen -- even if not permanent.Payroll employment has fallen by 6.7 million since the recession began.

FDIC problem bank list hits 416, but recovery eyed Thu Aug 27, 2009 3:41pm EDT Ross says FDIC bank rules still too tight 3:30pm EDTBy Karey Wutkowski and Steve Eder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Problem U.S. banks and thrifts on an official watchlist rose more than a third to 416 in the second quarter of 2009, as bad loans continued to bite, but regulators saw signs of stabilization in the industry. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said on Thursday that the industry swung back to a $3.7 billion loss in the second quarter, after reporting a $7.6 billion profit in the first quarter, primarily due to costs associated with rising levels of bad loans and falling asset values.Banking industry performance is -- as always -- a lagging indicator,FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair said. She said the source of the banking industry's problems had migrated from residential loans and complex mortgage-related assets to more conventional types of retail and commercial loans that have been hit hard by the recession. But Bair pointed to a smaller quarterly increase in troubled loans and decreases in the volume of some delinquent loan categories, as a possible turning point in the quality of assets that have weighed heavily on banks' balance sheets.

While challenges remain, evidence is building that the U.S. economy is starting to grow again,Bair said. The combined assets of the 416 problem institutions rose to $299.8 billion from $220 billion at 305 banks in the prior quarter. Problem banks are troubled institutions whose regulatory rating has been downgraded due to issues related to liquidity, capital levels, or asset quality. The agency's deposit insurance fund, that safeguards up to $250,000 per account at roughly 8,100 institutions, dipped 20 percent in the second quarter to $10.4 billion. The drop in the fund was chiefly caused by an $11.6 billion boost in money the FDIC set aside for expected bank failures.Regulators have closed 81 banks so far this year, compared with 25 last year, and three in 2007.We expect the numbers of problem banks and failures will remain elevated, even as the economy begins to recover, said Bair.

LINE OF CREDIT

Despite the low insurance fund balance, Bair said the FDIC does not expect to have to tap its $500 billion line of credit with the U.S. Treasury Department at this time.
She also said the FDIC had not yet decided whether to charge banks another special assessment to replenish the fund, but said the agency's board would meet toward the end of the third quarter to discuss the issue. In May the FDIC voted to impose a $5.6 billion special fee the industry has to pay in the third quarter. It also gave itself the right to charge two more special fees in coming quarters.Bill Fitzpatrick, an analyst at Optique Capital Management, said he expects the number of problem banks will keep rising. These are smaller institutions but they hold a lot of commercial real estate loans and that market will continue to deteriorate,Fitzpatrick said.

Keefe, Bruyette & Woods analyst Jefferson Harralson said construction loan losses related to residential real estate and development were depressing banks. These numbers were fairly expected, and I expect we'll continue to see losses in construction,Harralson said. The FDIC's second quarter briefing came a day after the agency approved new rules on private equity investment in troubled banks, softening an initial proposal that critics had warned could scare away badly needed capital.

The FDIC reported on Thursday that more than one out of four U.S. banks was unprofitable during the second quarter. The industry set aside more money to cover costs associated with deteriorating loans, with reserves for loan losses increasing 8.6 percent to $66.9 billion in the second quarter. However, the industry did show some improvement. Net interest margins, or a bank's cost of funding, improved at a majority of institutions.Overall capital levels also improved. The industry reported that on average, the leverage capital ratio increased during the quarter to 8.25 percent from 8.02 percent.(Reporting by Karey Wutkowski and Steve Eder; Additional reporting by Joe Rauch and Elinor Comlay in New York; Writing by Tim Dobbyn; Editing by Simon Denyer)

HELLICOPTER BENS BANK ACCOUNT FLEW THE COUP.

Bernanke personal bank account struck by ID theft By BRETT ZONGKER and NAFEESA SYEED, Associated Press Writers – Thu Aug 27, 8:05 pm ET

WASHINGTON – No one is safe from identity theft, not even the chairman of the Federal Reserve.Ben Bernanke's personal checking account became entangled in an elaborate identity-theft scheme after his wife Anna's purse was stolen last August at a Capitol Hill Starbucks. According to a District of Columbia police report, it contained her Social Security card, checkbook, credit cards and IDs.It's not been revealed how much money was stolen from the Bernankes' account. But someone started cashing checks on their bank account just days after the purse was stolen from her chair. The thefts helped fuel an ongoing investigation into a sophisticated ring.Losses from the fraud totaled more than $2.1 million and involved at least 10 financial institutions, court document said. Clyde Austin Gray Jr. of Waldorf, Md., a suspected ringleader in the scheme, pleaded guilty on July 22 in Alexandria, Va., federal court. The banks bore primary responsibility for the losses and the victims' accounts, including the Bernankes, were most likely made whole.Identity theft is a serious crime that affects millions of Americans each year,Bernanke said in a statement. Our family was but one of 500 separate instances traced to one crime ring. I am grateful for the law enforcement officers who patiently and diligently work to solve and prevent these financial crimes.Prosecutors wrote that Gray hired pick pockets then made counterfeit IDs for the participants. The coconspirators conducted the bank transactions, and Gray took a cut of the proceeds.

At least one check from the Bernanke account for $900 was deposited Aug. 13, 2008, into the account of another identity theft victim at a Bank of America branch in suburban Maryland, according to an affidavit filed in D.C. Superior Court. Authorities alleged that George L. Reid, 41, of Washington, cashed checks that day amounting to at least $9,000 in a string of transactions after the fake deposits inflated the related account balances.Bank of America spokeswoman Tara Burke said Thursday,We're looking into it. We're still gathering facts.Brian Lapidus, an identity theft expert with Kroll Fraud Solutions, said it's not unusual to hear of high-ranking officials caught up by identity theft. His firm has worked with celebrities, senators and others who have been victims. To an identity thief, we're all just names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth,Lapidus said.Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America.Beth Givens, director of the Privacy Rights Clearing House in San Diego, agreed, saying some Fortune 500 executives have been targeted because they have considerable financial resources. Still, she said, the Bernanke case sounds unique.I find this case interesting because it's a crime ring engaged in activities that have been primarily the purview of petty individual criminals — purse snatching, she said.Ten defendants, including Reid, have been identified in the investigation conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Secret Service and D.C. police. The scheme involved using stolen IDs, bank records, personal checks and other items to impersonate victims at bank branches, according to an affidavit signed by Postal Inspector William J. Aiello.

Victims were targeted in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Illinois and elsewhere. Part of the scheme involved checks stolen from the Combined Federal Campaign for the National Capital Area, an official federal government-sponsored charity.Court filings show Reid has confessed to depositing checks from an account that belonged to someone named B.B.He was first charged in D.C. Superior Court for identity theft and had confessed to law enforcement officials, according to the June 8 affidavit filed in Alexandria, Va., federal court where the case was transferred. An arrest warrant for Reid, though, is outstanding in the current case, according to court records. Sylvester Vaughn pleaded guilty on July 6 and is scheduled for sentencing with Gray in September.A message to an attorney who represented Reid in the D.C. case was not immediately returned. Court records didn't show an attorney for Reid in the current case.AP Business Writers Christopher S. Rugaber and Marcy Gordon contributed to this report.

Stock market reverses early losses, plods higher By SARA LEPRO, AP Business Writer – Thu Aug 27, 5:34 pm ET

NEW YORK – The stock market's rally plodded along Thursday, sustained by gains in financial and industrial shares.Major indexes overcame early losses and finished slightly higher, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which added 37 points to set a fresh 2009 high. The Dow has risen for eight straight days, its longest winning streak since April 2007.Trading lacked enthusiasm, however, as it has over the past week, with many investors shying away from making greater commitments to stocks.
Volume has been extremely light as many traders go on vacation, adding to the market's recent choppiness. The day's economic news, including a slightly smaller-than-expected dip in initial unemployment claims and a benign reading on gross domestic product, did little to excite investors.Analysts say the market has been running on its own momentum more than anything else, adding that a lot of the improving economic data has already been priced into stocks.A lot of activity has also been driven by short-covering, analysts say, which tends to amplify gains in the market. Short-covering occurs when investors have to buy stock after having earlier sold borrowed shares in a bet they would fall.Traders have been anticipating a pullback for weeks, but the dips that have occurred tend to be met with more buying.

There is just too much cash sitting on the sidelines, said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors. After giving up as much as 84 points early on, the Dow rose 37.11, or 0.4 percent, to close at 9,580.63. The Dow's eight-day advance totals 445 points, or 4.9 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.86, or 0.3 percent, to 1,030.98, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 3.30, or 0.2 percent, to 2,027.73.Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite indexes have finished higher seven out of the past eight days, rising about 5 percent over that period.

About eight stocks rose for every seven that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.82 billion shares, compared with 5.10 billion shares on Wednesday.Despite the run-up in stocks, investors are nervous about overextending the market's massive spring and summer rally, in which stocks have risen more than 45 percent off of 12-year lows since early March. You tend to have those moves run out of steam at some time, said Art Hogan, chief market analyst at Jefferies & Co.Big gains in a handful of financial stocks helped to turn the market around. Shares of American International Group Inc. surged nearly 27 percent, rising $10.15 to $47.84, as analysts speculated the company might be reconciling with former CEO Maurice Hank Greenberg, who could help bring private capital to the company. AIG shares have more than doubled in eight days.CIT Group Inc. jumped 22.8 percent, adding 29 cents to $1.56. Citigroup Inc. rose 42 cents, or 9.1 percent, to $5.05.

Shares of Boeing Co. rose, giving a boost to the Dow, after the company said its long-delayed 787 aircraft will be ready for its first flight by the end of this year. Shares jumped $4, or 8.4 percent, to $51.82.Energy stocks, which had weighed on the market early in the day, pulled off of their lows as oil prices turned higher. Like stocks, oil prices have been extremely volatile in recent weeks as investors try to determine whether current prices are warranted given still weak demand. Crude for October delivery added $1.06 to settle at $72.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Among the economic news Thursday, the Labor Department said first-time jobless claims fell 10,000 last week to 570,000, just shy of economists' expectations. Workers continuing to file for benefits, however, fell more than expected, declining to 6.13 million from 6.25 million in the previous week. It was the lowest level for continuing claims since early April.Meanwhile, a Commerce Department report showed the economy shrank at a 1 percent annualized rate in the second quarter. The updated figure was unchanged from a preliminary reading on GDP, and slightly better than the 1.5 percent decline that was forecast.Bond prices were mostly lower even after a strong auction of seven-year notes. The yield on the 10-year note rose to 3.46 percent from 3.44 percent. The dollar was mixed, while gold prices inched higher. In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies slipped 0.25, or 0.04 percent, to 583.77.Asian stocks fell after China said it would cut investment in some industries. Japan's Nikkei stock average lost 1.6 percent, while China's main index fell 0.7 percent.Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.4 percent, Germany's DAX index fell 0.9 percent, and France's CAC-40 lost 0.5 percent.

US to abandon Polish-Czech missile shield, lobbyist says
ANDREW RETTMAN 27.08.2009 @ 09:03 CET

The United States has all-but abandoned plans to house anti-missile bases in Poland and the Czech republic, according to a senior White House lobbyist.Riki Ellison, the chairman of the 10,000 member-strong Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, said in Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza on Thursday (26 August) that the US has changed its mind to avoid a rift with Russia and is now looking at Israel, Turkey, the Balkans or ship-borne facilities instead. The signals given by generals from the Pentagon are clear: the current US government is looking for different solutions on the question of missile defence than Poland and the Czech republic,he said. The new [US] team is paying more attention to Russian arguments,he added.Obama's people believe that many problems in the world can be more easily solved together with Moscow ...it's a question of priorities. For many Democrats, the priority is disarmament and they are capable of sacrificing a lot in order to achieve a new agreement with Russia on the reduction of strategic [nuclear] weapons.President Barack Obama ordered a review of the Bush-era missile shield plan shortly after coming into office this year.He unveiled his vision for a nuclear weapons-free world at a major foreign policy speech in Prague in April, while sounding a note of scepticism over the value of the shield.

As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward with a missile defence system that is cost effective and proven,he said. The multi-billion dollar project was to install 10 interceptor missiles at a facility in Poland and a radar base in the Czech republic. It also envisaged placing US Patriot missiles in Poland.Russia said the scheme was aimed at degrading its nuclear capability and could trigger a new Cold War.Many ordinary people in the Czech Republic also said they were against the shield in opinion polls. But the Polish and Czech centre-right political elite saw it as US gold-plating of anti-Russian security guarantees offered by Nato.

Saudi prince vows to fight terrorism after attack By ABDULLAH AL-SHIHRI, Associated Press Writer – Fri Aug 28, 7:39 am ET

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Hours after being lightly wounded by a suicide bomber, a senior Saudi prince largely credited with the kingdom's aggressive anti-terrorism efforts said Friday he was more determined than ever to fight militants in the country. The bombing was the first assassination attempt against a member of the royal family in decades and was also the first significant attack by militants in the kingdom since 2006. Saudi Arabia has waged a fierce crackdown on al-Qaida militants in the country that succeeded in killing or capturing most of its leaders after a string of attacks that started in 2003.Since the crackdown, al-Qaida's branch in the kingdom has largely moved its operations to neighboring Yemen, where instability and poverty have enabled it to take root. Saudi officials have repeatedly expressed concerns that turmoil in Yemen, where the government lacks control of large areas outside the capital, could allow al-Qaida to carry out cross-border attacks in its territory. The suicide bomber who targeted the assistant interior minister, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, late Thursday night blew himself up just before going into a gathering of well-wishers for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in Jiddah, the official news agency reported.Prince Mohammed, who is the son of Interior Minister Prince Nayef, told King Abdullah on Friday when the ruler visited him in the hospital shortly after the assassination attempt that the attacker was a wanted militant who had indicated he was going to turn himself in.I did not want him to be searched, but he surprised me by blowing himself up, said Prince Mohammed, who was shown on state television with a bandage around two of his fingers on his left hand.

However, this will only increase my determination to fight terrorism in the kingdom, he said.It is customary for senior members of the royal family to hold regular open gatherings during Ramadan where citizens can air grievances, seek settlement of financial or other disputes or offer congratulations. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but al-Qaida is believed to have been behind almost all attacks in the kingdom since 2003. The country is the birthplace of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and was home to 15 of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers. The Interior Ministry has spearheaded the kingdom's aggressive campaign against terrorism. On Aug. 19, authorities announced the arrest of 44 suspected militants with al-Qaida links in a yearlong sweep that also uncovered dozens of machine guns and electronic circuits for bombs.Last month, Saudi officials said a criminal court had convicted and sentenced 330 al-Qaida militants to jail terms, fines and travel bans in the country's first known trials for suspected members of the terror group. The 330 are believed to be among the 991 suspected militants that the interior minister has said have been charged with participating in terrorist attacks over the past five years.

But Saudi officials have recently expressed concern that al-Qaida could capitalize on the increasingly tense situation in Yemen, where the government is battling Shiite rebels in areas close to the Saudi border, to smuggle fighters into the country.Al-Qaida militants, including fighters returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, have established sanctuaries in Yemen, particularly in three provinces bordering Saudi Arabia known as the triangle of evil because of the heavy militant presence. In January, militants announced the creation of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, a merger between the terror network's Yemeni and Saudi branches, led by Naser Abdel-Karim al-Wahishi, a Yemeni who was once a close aide to bin Laden.

Malaysia Muslims protest proposed Hindu temple By VIJAY JOSHI, Associated Press Writer – AUG 28,09

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Dozens of Malaysian Muslims paraded Friday with the head of a cow, a sacred animal in Hinduism, in a dramatic protest against the proposed construction of a Hindu temple in their neighborhood. The unusual protest by some 50 people in Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor state, raises new fears of racial tensions in this multiethnic Muslim-majority country where Hindus comprise about 7 percent of the 27 million population. The demonstrators who marched from a nearby mosque after Friday prayers dumped the cow head outside the gates of the state government headquarters. Selangor adjoins Kuala Lumpur.Protesters stomped on the head and spat on it before leaving the site, Xavier Jeyakumar, a state government official in charge of non-Muslim affairs, told The Associated Press. This is a sign of disrespect, insensitivity and a huge insult to the Indian community,he said.Such an overt display of religious discord is almost unheard of in Malaysia, which has carefully nurtured racial harmony among its three main ethnic groups, Malay Muslims, Chinese and Indians, since 1969 when the country suffered its worst racial riots.

The demonstrators said their neighborhood, Section 23, has a 90 percent Muslim population and building a Hindu temple there was inappropriate. If there is blood you (the government) will be responsible,Malaysiakini, an independent news Web site, quoted a protest leader Ibrahim Haji Sabri as saying.I challenge (Selangor government leaders) to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension,Ibrahim said amid chants of Allahu Akbar,or God is great, the Malaysian Insider, another news Web site, reported.

Both sites posted pictures of the protest showing a bloodied cow head.

Muslim Malays and the Chinese and Indians — who are Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim — have generally been careful about not offending each others' religions. But racial tensions have risen in recent years amid complaints by the minorities that their rights are being eroded along with the rising influence of Islamic hard-liners.
Human Resource Minister S. Subramaniam said the incident infuriated Prime Minister Najib Razak, who asked the national police chief to investigate. Witnesses said police stood by and did nothing to stop the protest. The demonstration, which occurred days before Malaysia celebrates its independence day on Monday, comes amid a new campaign by Najib to promote national integration by emphasizing equality of all races. The prime minister said he was very upset over the incident and wants it to be nipped in the bud, Subramaniam said in a statement. The protesters condemned Chief Minister Khalid Ibrahim of Selangor, one of four states controlled by a three-party opposition coalition that includes an Islamic party. The demonstrators described Khalid, a Muslim, as a traitor to Islam. It was not immediately clear if they were affiliated to any political group. The Malaysian Insider quoted a protest leader, Mohammad Zurit Bin Ramli, as saying a temple would disturb Muslim practices. The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple, he said. Associated Press writer Sean Yoong contributed to this report.
