WE CHRISTIANS KNOW KING JESUS WILL SOON BE COMING TO GET US IN THE RAPTURE.THIS OKTAR HAS A CHANCE OF BEING THE FALSE PROPHET SINCE THE NEW CONVERTED CHURCH AND TRUE BELIEVERS IN JESUS DURING THE TRIBULATION IS BEING BEHEADED.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. ADNAN OKTAR BY JOEL RICHARDSON (June 22, 2009)THIS OKTAR I BELIEVE THINKS HE IS THE WELLBOY MAHDI

Mr.Adnan Oktar, in his interview by Joel Richardson has answered various questions regarding the Islamic view on the Prophet Jesus (as), Christianity, the People of the Book and also regarding the events that will take place in the End Times. Hazrat Mahdi (as) is a person who will appear before the return of the Prophet Jesus, who will unite Muslims in the Islamic world, whose aim is love, who will take affection and compassion as basis, who seeks to eradicate all weapons from the world, who will disarm the world, who will eliminate all weapons from the world and build peace and brotherhood.

The Prophet Jesus is different than the other prophets. That is clearly seen in the Qur’an. He is an extraordinary person. His miracles are most extraordinary. He resurrects the dead, for instance, and he shapes mud into the form of a bird and when he blows onto that bird shaped clay the bird flies away. The essential belief in Christianity is the Oneness of Allah, belief in the hereafter, justice, the idea that Allah will provide justice. It is loving Allah and being careful over what is lawful and unlawful. It is treating people well. These are other matters, the belief in Trinity and other things. If with the coming of the Jesus, if it undergoes a change in the sense we are familiar with then Christianity would return to its former perfect state. It will return to its original form. According to our beliefs, it will return to the true Christianity. Again according to our belief, the original and the true Bible will also be found in that time.

Every country can live as it wishes according to the decision of its people. Iran can live according to its own belief, but they will have a spiritual leader. In the same way that the Pope is the spiritual leader of Christians, Muslims will also have a spiritual leader. But there will be no system that interferes in anyone’s beliefs, and no such thing exists in the essence of the deen. There is a verse that clearly says there is no compulsion in the deen. People are free in their beliefs, and there is no compulsion in religion, and everyone can live as they wish.

JOEL RICHARDSON: I have a very interesting question. In some of your previous interviews I have heard people ask you questions about the Mahdi you said – they have asked you questions with regard to the identification, the identity of the Mahdi and you have been very emphatic that the Mahdi would never ever say that he is the Mahdi. The Mahdi will simply be acknowledged as such through his actions. So I certainly understand that the Mahdi would never claim to be the Mahdi. That said; do you ever wonder would you ever hope that you yourself are the Mahdi.

ADNAN OKTAR: I have been asked this far too many times. Looking at the hadith, we do see that my external appearance does indeed resemble many of the signs. If they ask me whether the signs are upon me, if I said no, it would be dishonest, a downright lie and very ugly to deny it. Because people look at me and say that the Mahdi’s (as) brow is very broad. It would be a terrible lie for me to say that mine is narrow. They say the Mahdi (as) is bearded and that he has a mole on his cheek and a furrow on his brow between his eyebrows. People look and see that I have one furrow, and it would be unpleasant and annoy people for me to deny it. And I have a mark on my back, so why lie about it? There is a mole on my back, just like that of our Prophet (saas). It is said that Mahdi would have another mole on his back. I have that as well. He says the Mahdi will be of medium stature, and true I am of medium height. Who would believe it if I said I was tall or short? That would be really abnormal. For example he says the Mahdi (as) has broad shoulders. And how can I say that my broad shoulders are narrow? He says his stomach is wide. Should I say that mine is not? For instance he says His thighs are wide, should I say mine are not? My appearance from top to bottom is certainly like his, that is an apparent truth. He says the Mahdi (as) has a broad forehead, and I have a broad forehead. He says his hair and beard are black and that he has a mole on his cheek. There is a mole on my left cheek. Some people sometimes ask about this too. I have a mole on my right leg, and that is also a characteristic of the Mahdi (as). But despite all this I never claim to be Hazrat Mahdi (as). People must not waste their time on that. I try to convince people who come to me with that claim to return to the deen, to enter Islam. It would be irreligious for anyone to come to me and say you are the Mahdi (as), and I make no such claim. But it is true there is a resemblance. But the Prophet Jesus will come and Islam will rule the world. The Prophet Jesus will pray with Hazrat Mahdi (as), and then we can say that this person, Allah knows the truth, is Hazrat Mahdi (as) and does indeed look like him. But apart from this, nobody can make any claim regarding Hazrat Mahdi (as) on the basis of physical appearance alone. Some people do, but these are false Mahdis prior to the real Hazrat Mahdi (as). The Bible also speaks of this. And there are hadith on the subject. False Mahdis will emerge and state clearly that they are the Mahdi. There will be false Jesuses and false Messiahs... These have appeared and are still appearing and openly saying that is who they are. The rank of Mahdi is attained through success, not by claiming it. But the resemblance is true, there are many similarities, and there is no question of hiding these during a sincere conversation. Of course I will state it honestly, but when it comes to making such claims, I would not have such a claim.I fear Allah and I can go to hell as well as to paradise. I am a humble servant of Allah, just an ordinary human being. I have never claimed to be anyone extraordinary.

JOEL RICHARDSON: Okay thank you. With regard to Jesus; you have said in my view the prophet Jesus has already returned to the earth but he is hidden. He is obliged to conceal himself because of the terrorist and political attacks he would be exposed to. However he too will emerge in the very near future and together with the Mahdi will embark upon his intellectual struggle.Do you believe that when Jesus return he will abolish Christianity as we know it today, do you believe that he will abolish the doctrines of the trinity of the divine incarnation of the Messiah as well as the Christian doctrine that the Christ was crucified died resurrected and sent to heaven?

ADNAN OKTAR: The essential belief in Christianity is the Oneness of Allah, belief in the hereafter, justice, the idea that Allah will provide justice. Maybe they will examine it using the Carbon 14 technique or using other methods, but the original form of the Gospels will be found. I mean, when the prophet Jesus comes and says that Allah is One, that is not something that will do away with Christianity. He would be saying something that reinforces Christianity. I mean, Christianity is in any case a religion of Islam. If we had lived in the time of the Prophet Jesus, we would have been Christians as well. If we had been around in the time of the Prophet Musa, we would have been Jews. Consequently the religion of the Prophet Ibrahim was also the true deen at the time and unaltered Christianity brought by the Prophet Jesus is the true Christianity. The Torah and the religion brought by the Prophet Musa is also the true faith, but according to our belief it has gradually been altered over the course of time. When the Prophet Jesus comes- there are some Christians sects that are against the Cross. They do not have the Cross. I believe there are even some such sects and various groups in America. But they still say “We are Christians,” I mean this does not stop them being Christians. In other words, it is their believing in the Oneness of Allah and in the statements of the Prophet Jesus on other matters, their acceptance of statements compatible with the Qur’an, that makes them truly Christian and that makes them a true Muslim, it makes their belief a true religion of Islam.

In our belief, when the Prophet Jesus comes he will correct certain altered aspects of the New Testament. He will restore the New Testament to its original form and consequently he will be following the Qur’an. That is to say a New Testament whose altered aspects have been corrected will in any case be restored to its pure and original form. But since the Qur’an is the final scripture, of course the Prophet Jesus will follow the Qur’an. But the pronouncements of the New Testament will not be invalidated. I mean the pronouncements of a true scripture will not be lifted. For example, the true pronouncements of the original form of the Torah will not be invalidated; I read the Torah night and day, for instance. I read the New Testament. There is no reason for those pronouncements to be lifted. For example, the Torah says that Allah is One. That delights me, it is a most excellent thing to say. Only those parts that are incorrect according to our belief will be put right. Otherwise no pronouncement of that book can be lifted. But I follow the Qur’an, of course. And when the Prophet Jesus comes he will also follow the Qur’an. But Muslims will also benefit from the New Testament and will read it. They will abide by the correct pronouncements in it. And they will abide by the correct pronouncements in the Torah as well. Because all three, the Qur’an, the Torah and the New Testament, say the same things, so if you comply with one you would be complying with all. A Christian who complies with the original New Testament does not leave Christianity rather consolidates it. When the New Testament turns into its original form I will abide by it too. Of course I follow the Qur’an, but I also apply the correct and proper pronouncements in the New Testament. I will also apply the correct and proper pronouncements in the Torah when it is found, and if there are parts of it that have been changed by the pronouncements of the Qur’an, then of course I follow the Qur’an. But I comply by all those pronouncements that are the same in all three.

Madoff dying of cancer, fellow inmates say-NY Post
Mon Aug 24, 2009 10:00am EDT

NEW YORK, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Bernard Madoff, convicted of swindling $65 billion through the biggest-ever Ponzi scheme, has told fellow prison inmates that he is dying of cancer, the New York Post reported on Monday, citing unnamed prison sources.

Madoff, 71, who since June has been serving a 150-year sentence at a North Carolina federal prison, has been telling fellow inmates he does not have much longer to live, the Post said, citing the unofficial and unusual sources. The Post said there had been speculation that Madoff was suffering from pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Inmates said Madoff was taking about 20 pills a day and not doing very well. The Post said Madoff's lawyer did not return messages Sunday and had previously declined to answer questions about whether Madoff had cancer. Reuters could not reach Madoff lawyer Ira Sorkin immediately for comment. The tabloid also reported Madoff has engaged in a number of surprising new activities with some unexpected social circles.

A shirtless Madoff has joined weekly Native American religious purification ceremonies that involve prayers, heated rocks to induce sweat and smoking from a ceremonial pipe, the paper said. The paper also reported that various gangs at the prison are trying to recruit Madoff while some inmates regularly cook sandwich wraps for him at their cells. MUSLIM NATIONS

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY)of the north quarters, and all his bands:(SUDAN,AFRICA) and many people with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

ISAIAH 17:1
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

PSALMS 83:3-7
3 They (ARABS,MUSLIMS) have taken crafty counsel against thy people,(ISRAEL) and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they (MUSLIMS) have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:(TREATIES)
6 The tabernacles of Edom,(JORDAN) and the Ishmaelites;(ARABS) of Moab, PALESTINIANS,JORDAN) and the Hagarenes;(EGYPT)
7 Gebal,(HEZZBALLOH,LEBANON) and Ammon,(JORDAN) and Amalek;(SYRIA,ARABS,SINAI) the Philistines (PALESTINIANS) with the inhabitants of Tyre;(LEBANON)

DANIEL 11:40-43
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south( EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR IN ISRAEL) and the king of the north (RUSSIA AND MUSLIM HORDES OF EZEK 38+39) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.(JORDAN)
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

Report: Russian questions freighter cargo AUG 25,09

MOSCOW – The Interfax news agency is quoting Russia's top investigator as saying it's possible a freighter embroiled in a high-seas mystery was carrying more than just timber. The reported comment by Investigative Committee Chief Alexander Bastrykin is the first suggestion by a Russian official that the Arctic Sea could have been carrying a sensitive cargo. The ship left Finland last month carrying timber, then seemed to vanish. Russia's defense minister announced last week that the ship had been found off West Africa and had been hijacked. The developments raised suspicions the ship could have been carrying a secret cargo.Interfax quoted Bastrykin on Tuesday as saying we do not rule out the possibility that they might have been carrying not only timber.

Is Russia setting the stage for a nuclear apocalypse?

I can’t say anything about the roots of this story and I don’t plan to dig further… I need to think about my own skin too. Understand that as you will.–Mikhail Voitenko, editor of the Russian maritime Bulletin Sovfrakht., speaking about the hijacking of the Arctic Sea By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director, & Sean Osborne, Military Affairs Specialist

24 August 2009: While it might seem like an unusual morphing of the movies Inside Man and The Hunt for Red October, the account of the cargo ship Arctic Sea is far stranger than either fictional account. Based on information developed through our extensive investigation, we can authoritatively state, without hyperbole, that the mysteries surrounding the MV Arctic Sea are as deep as the Atlantic waters where it navigated and its alleged secret cargo as potentially dangerous to an unsuspecting, distracted populace as the coastal rip tides produced by a late summer hurricane.

Imagine a 4,000 ton, 100 meter commercial cargo ship, manned by a crew of 15, equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS), a satellite navigation beacon, and state of the art communication equipment, including satellite phones and the cellular telephones of the crew, laden with $1.2 - $1.8 million of cut lumber and manned by a crew of 15, suddenly and inexplicably disappearing completely off the grid for two weeks - allegedly at the hands of eight-(8) hijackers or pirates. Now, imagine the pirate attack of this low value target taking place in a busy transit area that has not seen an act of piracy since the 17th century. That’s what reportedly transpired with the Arctic Sea, a Russian managed commercial cargo ship sailing under a Maltese flag and owned by the Finnish company Arctic Sea Ltd. The Russian management is from a sister company based in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk that reportedly provides technical support to the company and its sole vessel. Arkhangelsk is also the home of the 15 man crew of the Arctic Sea.Now imagine a search for the missing vessel launched by numerous assets from the Russian Black Sea fleet in conjunction with NATO, the use of satellites and other forms of surveillance, and a rescue mission that ultimately secured the ship, rescued its crew and captured the alleged hijackers or pirates. Except this was no ordinary rescue of the crew and arrest of the hijackers. Some of the crew and all of the hijackers, including one who was later identified as a fisherman who supposedly died three years ago, were transported together by the Russians to a high security Moscow prison where they are being held incommunicado.Next, imagine an investigation of the incident that has involved law enforcement from 20 countries, 3 intelligence agencies, and British nuclear response team - so far, all of which has been conducted under an unprecedented level of secrecy. Added to that shroud of secrecy are various bits of disinformation - news articles - that have been intentionally seeded to a non-inquiring media through Russian and other diplomatic sources.

Now finally, imagine the majority of those of us in the West having never even heard of this hijacking, the hijacked ship, its recovery, the rescue of crew and the arrest of the hijackers. The latter, of course is easier to imagine. The media minimalism can be attributed to a combination of government secrecy and a shortage of journalists willing to investigate an incident that has national and international security implications, rather than the more salacious and better selling celebrity debauchery. The security implications pertaining to this incident are indeed ominous as they appear to directly relate to either a clandestine program of arming an enemy of the United States and Israel with nuclear weaponry or something far more sinister and conspiratorial. While the final chapter of this intriguing tale of high-stakes international nuclear smuggling has yet to be written, one thing has already been established: a global end-game scenario is being constructed while most of the world sleeps.

The adventures of the MV Arctic Sea

It began in June, when the Arctic Sea underwent about two-weeks of repairs at the Pregol shipyard in Kaliningrad, which is a Russian enclave situated between Poland and Lithuania. It is the base of the Russian Baltic Fleet and a notorious area for smuggling of everything from drugs to weapons. According to intelligence reports following the alleged disappearance of the vessel - reports independently confirmed by this author through direct inquiries with U.S. and Israeli intelligence sources, the repairs were not repairs at all, but a very extensive project that involved completely dismantling and rebuilding the ship’s bulkhead to special military-like specifications. This was done to accommodate what was described by these intelligence officials as very expensive and very deadly cargo.Following the extensive renovation of the vessel, the Arctic Sea is anchored in Pietarsaari, on the West Coast of Finland to pick up its cargo of sawn timber that is reportedly destined for Algeria. The value of the cargo of timber is reported to be between $1.2 and $1.8 million. On July 23, 2009, the Arctic Sea, flying the Maltese Flag, departed Pietarsaari with a crew of 15. It is scheduled to arrive at the port of Bejaia, Algeria on August 4, 2009. The ship reportedly has food supplies for a 45-day voyage and enough fuel for 40 days of cruising at sea.Within 24 hours of its departure, the vessel is reportedly boarded by force in the early morning hours of July 24 near the Swedish island of Gotland. According to various sources, including some open source news reports, the crew was held, beaten and interrogated for 12 hours by eight-(8) armed attackers. Some reports suggest that the masked attackers posed as Swedish drug police who spoke English with an unidentified accent. Other reports indicate that the alleged hijackers, who approached the vessel in an inflatable style boat, did so under the pretext of distress aboard their boat.

What exactly happened aboard the Arctic Sea at this point remains unclear, as both public and private sources offer somewhat differing accounts. Some sources indicate that there were as many as 12 hijackers, with perhaps four leaving the Arctic Sea in the inflatable assault craft. Other sources, including some post-event news accounts, reported that all of these particular the attackers left the Arctic Sea within 12 hours of their initial attack. Based on our independent research, the latter account appears questionable at best. What is consistent, however, are reports that the vessel’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) was turned off by someone aboard the vessel. A ship’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an interactive transponder that provides detailed information about the ship, somewhat similar to the black box of an aircraft by comparison. The fact that the AIS system was switched off is critical to this event. Accounts of the ship’s AIS also comes into play later when sources indicate that is was actually removed from the vessel altogether. While some might contend that disabling this device is not impossible, all agree that it takes quite a bit of knowledge to do so. Removing it and making it functional on another ship requires even more specialized knowledge and ability. Simultaneously, the signal from the Arctic Sea’s satellite navigation beacon disappeared. It is the unanimous opinion of all intelligence sources that only those having very specialized knowledge are capable of incapacitating this beacon. In any case, news of the incident of alleged piracy or hijacking and of the ship’s disappearance from the grid would remain a virtual secret for the next 4-5 days. Even more curiously, on July 28, four days after the boarding of the hostiles, the Arctic Sea reportedly made routine contact with the Dover Coastguard as it entered the English Channel. It appears that the next odd transmission by the Arctic Sea set off alarm bells of certain British maritime officials. According to both published and private sources, a short time after making the contact with Dover, the Arctic Sea reported the armed boarding of their vessel by the alleged Swedish drug police to the Helsinki police authorities, telling the Helsinki officials that everything was fine and they would follow-up with them after completing their journey.

The alleged boarding of the Arctic Sea by fake Swedish drug police, the subsequent and very delayed reporting of that event and that the crew was fine despite the extended detention and beatings, the disabling of the ship’s AIS, and altogether inconsistent reports from and about the ship sent up red flags that something was definitely awry aboard the Arctic Sea.Suddenly, on July 30, 2009, a brief AIS signal was received from the Arctic Sea. At 1:29 AM Greenwich Mean Time, it was as if someone activated the AIS, only to have it turned off again minutes later. At this point, the ship basically vanished from the grid. The signal from the AIS placed the Arctic Sea between southwest England and France at that time.Although there were no further electronic signals from the Arctic Sea, European maritime officials reported receiving radio calls from the Arctic Sea alleging yet a second attack against the ship off the Portuguese coast between July 31 and August 2, 2009. Intelligence sources interviewed by this author verified the allegation but openly questioned their veracity. The following day, the company that insures the vessel allegedly received a ransom demand. Vladimir Dushin, vice-president of Renaissance Insurance, alleges that the company was contacted by telephone by an English-speaking caller who demanded $1.5 million or the crew of the Arctic Sea would be shot and the ship sunk. It was at this point that Interpol issued their initial hijacking alert for the Arctic Sea.

On August 4, 2009, the Arctic Sea failed to arrive at Bejaia as scheduled.

It was not until August 12, 2009, and only after public pressure by the families of the crew that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Russian navy deployed in the Atlantic to locate the vessel and orders the military to take all necessary measures to recover the ship and its crew. On August 14, 2009, with many searching for the missing vessel, the Arctic Sea is reportedly sighted 500 miles off the Cape Verde Islands, west of Africa, according to French defense officials. The next day, transmissions from the Arctic Sea’s AIS placed the ship in the Bay of Biscay. Despite the AIS signature marking its location, France announced that there was no cargo ship in the area. Interestingly and perhaps quite significantly, it was announced that the signal was coming from one of the three Russian Navy ships in that area.On August 15, 2009, a joint Russia-NATO operation is officially launched to track and locate the Arctic Sea. It is at this point that reports begin to circulate among maritime and intelligence officials that this might not be a hijacking after all, and that the ship could be carrying some type of special cargo. Certain maritime security professionals, who have been following this incident closely, suggest that the Arctic Sea could be involved in the transporting of nuclear materials. These reports are immediately dismissed by Finnish authorities and other diplomatic officials.

The Arctic Sea is Located

On Monday, August 17, 2009, (2200 BST August 16), nearly 2 weeks after it was scheduled to arrive in Algeria, the Arctic Sea was located 300 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Verde by the Russian navy frigate Ladny. According to official reports, the eight unarmed hijackers were found aboard the ship along with all of the crew. While published reports of the naval rescue suggest that the hijackers threw their weapons overboard as the Russians approached, intelligence sources have indicated that there is nothing to indicate that the alleged hijackers were armed. Additionally, no evidence was found to suggest that the crew of the Arctic Sea was beaten as initially reported. The following public statements made at a news conference and reported in Russia Today by Mikhail Voitenko, the editor of the online Maritime Bulletin-Sovfracht on August 17, 2009 therefore appear to make sense when considered through the maze of details surrounding the disappearance and recovery of the Arctic Sea:The fact is that it was not a criminal assault, it was not an act of piracy, and what exactly it was we don’t know. The vessel had all the necessary modern means of communication and emergency alarms, and was located in waters where regular mobile telephones work. To hijack the vessel so that no one makes a peep - not one alarm goes off - can you imagine how that could be? I can’t.Voitenko, whose company Sovfracht specializes in anti-piracy security consulting, also said the hijacking was beyond the means of ordinary pirates.

The operation cost more than the cargo and ship combined.Declining to elaborate any further, Voitenko suggested that the ship’s cargo might not be drugs or arms, but something much more expensive and dangerous. He added:It seems some third party didn’t want this transit to be fulfilled so they made this situation highly sophisticated and very complicated. So, what exactly was on the MV Arctic Sea, what was the intended destination of that secret cargo, and where is it now? Our intelligence sources from the U.S. to the UK and Israel have provided critical and unsettling insight into these questions. Their answers paint a very disturbing picture of state-sanctioned nuclear arms smuggling that will likely set the stage for an apocalyptic, end-game scenario ripped directly from the Book of Revelation. The consequences of such a scenario, allowed to continue without interdiction or exposure, could forever change the balance of power, if not the actual global geographical landscape itself.

Part II will be published tomorrow.

Reference: Arctic Sea Events Timeline

June 2009: The Arctic Sea undergoes repairs at the Pregol shipyard in Kaliningrad, which is a Russian enclave situated between Poland and Lithuania. It is the base of the Russian Baltic Fleet and a notorious area for smuggling of everything from drugs to weapons. According to intelligence reports following the alleged disappearance of the vessel, the repairs were not repairs at all, but an extensive project that involved completely dismantling the ship’s bulkhead to accommodate some type of additional special cargo.

20 July 2009: The vessel is anchored in Pietarsaari on the West Coast of Finland to pick up its cargo of sawn timber worth $1.8 million.

23 July 2009: The Arctic Sea, flying the Maltese Flag, leaves Pietarsaari with a crew of 15 for the port of Bejaia in Algeria with a projected arrival date of August 4, 2009. The ship has food supplies for a 45-day voyage and enough fuel for 40 days of cruising.

24 July 2009: According to a number of various sources, the vessel is forcibly boarded in the early morning near the Swedish island of Gotland. Initial reports suggested that the crew was held, beaten and interrogated for 12 hours by eight-(8) armed attackers. Some reports suggest that the masked attackers posed as Swedish drugs police who spoke English with an accent. Some reports indicate that these are the men who have been arrested for the hijacking, although it was previously reported that the attackers left the Arctic Sea within 12 hours of their initial attack.

Other reports indicate that the hijackers forced the crew to change course and turned off the vessel’s navigation equipment (AIS), while others suggest the AIS was remotely turned off. Interestingly, news of this incident would remain a virtual secret for the next five-(5) days. By the time the Swedish report of the attack emerged, the ship had already passed through the English Channel.

28 July 2009: The Arctic Sea reportedly makes routine contact with the Dover Coastguard as it enters the English Channel. A short time later, the same day managers of the Malta flagged and Russian owned ship Arctic Sea report the armed boarding to the Helsinki police authorities.

30 July 2009: The last signal from the vessel’s automatic identification system (AIS) placed the Arctic Sea between southwest England and France. at 1:29 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time on July 30, the ship’s signal vanished.

31 July - 2 August 2009: European maritime officials report receiving radio calls from the Arctic Sea alleging a second attack off the Portuguese coast.

3 August 2009: According to published reports, Vladimir Dushin, vice-president of Renaissance Insurance, alleges that the company was contacted by telephone by an English-speaking caller who demanded $1.5 million or the crew of the Arctic Sea would be shot and the ship sunk. Interpol issues an initial hijacking alert for the Arctic Sea.

Four years ago as of August 25th 2009, I found myself two minutes from death in the middle of the road after a deer hit me while I was riding my motorcycle. I crashed on my head, breaking nearly everything on my face and giving me severe brain injuries. My spleen was also punctured but most the severe injuries were from the neck up.LAURIE ROTH.

This can’t be happening!

That day I had asked my buddy Karen Nelli, children’s music pastor at my church and friend to ride with me that day. Usually, I rode alone. If I had that day I would have been dead at the seen very quickly. She recalls turning the corner but not seeing me and my bike following after I turned at mile marker 14 coming down from Mount Spokane. We were checking out the lodge. She stopped for a few minutes waiting for me, then feeling concerned, turned back around the corner only to find my unconscious and bloody body lying in the road, my bike 30 feet away from me and no deer in site. She thought it was a hit and run at first, not seeing the deer until later. Frantically, Karen tried to remove debris from my throat from the road so I could breath, then panicking, grabbed her cell phone, which didn’t work in the mountains. She started yelling for help and praying for a miracle.Fortunately Karen’s screaming caught the attention of two builders working on a house somewhere in the woods nearby. When they heard the crash, at first they thought someone in a truck had lost their load, then realized there was something very wrong when they heard Karen’s screaming for help. They got in their work truck and zoomed over there. Thankfully they had just put in a phone at their work site that week. They called for immediate help. Cars and witnesses started to show up and a man with a cell phone that actually worked in that remote location called for Life flight, the Hellicopter/1st responder crew. All there thought it was life and death.First responders finally arrived 45 minutes later. I was told much later by one of the flight nurses who intubated me at the seen, that I was about 2 minutes from death when they got to me and barely breathing due to my lungs filling up with so much blood. Much to the shock of many I made it to the hospital alive. I was in a coma and unrecognizable.

This started an odyssey of healing, therapy, survival and work that started and is in motion to this day.I had broken my jaw in 3 places, the bones above my top lip in two places, shattered my left eye socket, crushed my forehead, shredded my mouth and severed the roof of my mouth. Then there were the numerous brain injuries. The hospital staff was wonderful and just doing their job. Once stabilized in the first hospital I was then transferred to a recovery hospital and brain injury ward. This is when the real work started. How can I forget the daily mental exercises and story problems that practically gave my another brain injury? A typical example of my story problems each day was the following.Your daughter Suzie has a piano lesson at 4:00 and Danny has soccer.practice at 3:30 and you need to get groceries. What do you do? After about a billion of these little situation stories that seemed dummer than a post to me I started answering them the way I thought they must think I would. “Well, the only thing I can think of is I’ll have to steal a car then rush into the corner market and shop lift since there would be no time to stand in line and buy groceries. I’ll then skid to a stop at my daughter’s piano lesson and push her out on the curb. Of course, I’d have to race off for affect! Obviously, my twisted sense of humor and apparently ego hadn’t been crushed entirely.

After nearly two month in the hospital I came home

I sure have bum luck sometimes. I finally had a 10 body; I was 5″7 and 120 pounds but I had a Frankenstein head and drooled. I started the endless therapy and work at home to try and grab my life back in some way. I talked like a drunk, drooled and couldn’t close my lips together. I would practice my brains out talking in the mirror and forming words. After my second muscle and nerve surgery in my mouth I could finally put my lips together and form a real word. I intensified my practice and started to dream about radio even more. I could think again, maybe just maybe I could talk again.

Then there was my eye. I would also do daily practice trying to get my left eye and eyelid to open and track. Double vision was severe and everywhere making it very hard to shop, cook, drive and read any news. Doing show prep and reading anything I had prepared for a show was all but impossible for nearly my entire first year back.

I was offered my time slot back on national radio 10 months later by IRN-USA Network.

June 2006 I was excited to start my national show again back in my old time slot of 7-10pm PAC each day. The photo below was my first night back. I could almost talk normally, could think, most my scars were gone and I was on two satellites and had a chance in radio again! Granted, I probably only had 3 people and a dog listening but at least it would be 3 people and a dog and not 2 people and a mouse. That was a start.A few months before starting back I had found Patrick Carey, my current engineer and call screener. He is most extraordinary. He has been loyal and faithful the whole time! God also brought me two wonderful sponsors who came on and didn’t complain though I had so few stations.

4 years later, How has this experience affected me?

I get up at 5:30 am now and have more time to pray and read my Bible. I have my coffee, light a candle and pursue the Lord. He meets me and I have drawn closer to Him through this build back the last 4 years. My family continues to try and recover from financial struggles to this day. We had no health insurance and were at the time only living off the humble income received from my radio show. It was nearly $500,000 accident. We had two needy adopted children who were 2 and 8 at the time.Financial challenges that are huge and ongoing so often break up marriages and render people hopeless to function. We have continued to trust the Lord and take one day at a time as we build back. Things worth having don’t always come easy but God does really provide! I couldn’t possibly thank all the people who have helped us through this ordeal. We received money, food, encouragement, a sea of prayers, second chances and much love. Thank you all! My show and life are ongoing projects. I am currently building my show back with stations and an Internet audience. I am around 45 stations now and climbing. Folks can listen to my show live or archived at Never give up! LAURIE ROTH.

Fall Of The Republic Exposes How Brand Obama Is Destroying America
Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Tuesday, August 25, 2009

http://www.infowars.com/fall-of-the-republic-exposes-how-brand-obama-is-destroying-america/

Alex Jones’ highly anticipated upcoming documentary Fall of the Republic: The Presidency of Barack Obama boldly lifts the lid and unveils the fraud behind Brand Obama and how the globalists are using their newest, and slickest ever puppet to destroy the last vestiges of America’s freedom, Constitution and economy, all while helping the bankers loot the country clean. The film exposes the agenda that Obama was put in place to accomplish, a world government allied with a bank of the world run by globalist eugenicists hell-bent on destroying America’s first world status and replacing it with a hollow shell of tyranny. The mind control, the television programming, and all the media talking points that serve to reinforce the image of Brand Obama are laid bare, unveiling the naked ruth, as legendary author and documentary film maker John Pilger recently discussed, that Obama is nothing more than a corporate marketing creation, a skilled hypnotist using seductive tools of propaganda – race, gender and class – to hoodwink the masses into accepting his rhetoric while ignoring the contradiction of his actions. The film exposes how Brand Obama says one thing – to make people buy into the brand – and then the real Obama does another. The burgeoning police state, warrantless wiretapping, secret arrests, indefinite detention of citizens, torture, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Pakistan, have all been expanded under Brand Obama despite his promises to reverse them all.The real question to ask is not which class Obama claims to represent or fight for, but which class Obama serves. Fall of the Republic leaves no room for doubt that the class Obama serves is the elite and it is their agenda he is diligently following.

In terms of focused research and factual content, Fall of the Republic dominates even The Obama Deception for hardcore evidence and documented material. The film proves how Obama was put in power to cement the gains of tyranny and oppression achieved under Bush while the masses slept, lulled into a deep hypnosis with empty promises of change, hope and progress. The movie picks up from where The Obama Deception left off, highlighting how Obama has continued and expanded the socialized financial takeover introduced by Bush and how the bankster gangster cronies have made off with trillions in taxpayer’s money, bankrupting the future of the country for generations to come.\

The hypocrisy and underlying deceit of people like Al Gore, John P. Holdren and Obama himself are displayed in plain view as the cap and trade hoax is demolished and revealed to be nothing less than a total takeover of the American economy, its infrastructure, and a mandate to micromanage every aspect of every citizen’s private life.Obama’s role in converting American from a free market, free Republic, to a command and control state-run oligarchy controlled by offshore banking interests is explored at length in the documentary. In order to make this the most hard-hitting documentary we have ever released, the biggest budget ever allocated to a single movie was made available, primarily for the purpose of traveling all over the country to conduct no less than 19 separate sit down interviews for the film.Personalities who will appear in the movie include Gerald Celente, Alan Watt, Jesse Ventura, climatologist Tim Ball, economist John Perkins, the Oath Keepers, Dr. Sherry Tenpenny, Webster Tarpley, Bob Bowman, Wayne Madsen and George Humphrey.Fall of the Republic is an unprecedented two hour romp through the highly concentrated and brazen levels of tyranny and corruption displayed by Obama and his administration in the short period since they took office. The end of the movie is encapsulated by the idea that the fight to maintain and restore a free Republic is a constant struggle against those who harbor the virus of evil in their souls.Fall of the Republic will be available first exclusively for Prison Planet.tv members on October 21st. If you are not yet a member, click here to get your subscription and enjoy high quality streaming and download of the movie immediately upon its release. Pre-orders for the DVD will be taken on September 21st at the Infowars shopping cart.

Tropical depression forms far out in Pacific AccuWeather Mon Aug 24, 4:49 pm ET

MIAMI – Forecasters say a tropical depression has formed in the Pacific and it's likely to turn into a tropical storm, though it's not threatening land.As of Monday evening, the National Hurricane Center said the tropical depression had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph) with stronger gusts. It was expected to become a tropical storm Monday or Tuesday. Its center was located about 660 miles (1,060 km) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. It was moving west-northwest near 10 mph (17 kph).

WSI maintains hurricane forecast for 2009 AccuWeather Mon Aug 24, 5:03 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Private weather forecaster WSI Corp said on Monday it still sees a quiet 2009 Atlantic hurricane season with conditions not conducive to an active year for violent storms.WSI's updated forecast predicted a season of 10 named storms, five hurricanes and two intense hurricanes of category 3 or greater, unchanged from its July forecast. In July, WSI cut its forecast from 11 named storms to 10.The forecast numbers continue from July to August because there have been no significant changes in the current El Nino event, said WSI seasonal forecaster Todd Crawford. The number of expected storms is close to the 1950-2008 average, but is much lower than the numbers seen during the past 15 years.Water temperature and wind conditions in the Atlantic have so far made for a relatively quiet hurricane season this year, and while the first hurricane of the season, Bill, skirted eastern North America last week, this year is expected to be quieter than 2008.

Ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic have warmed up considerably during the past month, but this warming likely represents only a shallow surface layer and probably isn't indicative of any substantial increase in total available energy, said Crawford.Last year, 16 named storms were generated, disrupting U.S. oil and gas operations and damaging communities along the Gulf Coast. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. WSI's next and last hurricane forecast will be issued on September 23.(Reporting by Edward McAllister; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)

Hurricane Bill washes away N.S. road EMO minister says province lucky damage wasn't worse Monday, August 24, 2009 | 4:34 PM AT CBC News

Nova Scotia Transportation Department crews are assessing what's left of a causeway that was hammered away in the strong surf of Hurricane Bill. The Western Head causeway near Liverpool, also known as the shore road, was swept away Sunday as the Category 1 storm blew past the province.Patricia Jreige, a spokeswoman for the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department, said workers were out at the site Sunday and again Monday. The causeway after the storm swept through. (Courtesy Kim Masland)Once they assess the damage, we'll be able to provide more details on the repairs, what's needed and the cost, she told CBC News.Local residents say the causeway is an important transportation link for them, as well as for tourists and surfers attracted to the local beaches.Though there were some flooded roads and power outages, the province largely made it through the storm unscathed.Ramona Jennex, the minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office, said Nova Scotia was extremely lucky that Bill didn't come 80 kilometres closer to the coast. This was a huge storm and we were blessed that it missed us,she told reporters Monday.Jennex said she's pleased that people stocked up on emergency supplies and took precautions at home, but hopes they don't become complacent now that Bill is becoming memorable for what it didn't inflict on the province.

Hurricane Bill blasted into the Nova Scotia area Sunday morning as a Category 1 storm, moving northeast off the province's Atlantic coast before hitting Newfoundland around midnight. The maximum winds of 130 km/h were offshore, although strong winds and heavy rain took out enough tree branches to knock out power to thousands of Nova Scotians. Some places received as much as 30 millimetres of rain in an hour.Nova Scotia Power said about 30 customers in the Shelburne area were without power as of Monday afternoon, down from 45,000 at one point.Swimmers at Queensland Beach were warned they could be hit with $800 fines. (CBC)Jennifer Parker, a corporation spokeswoman, said a dozen crews were working on the outages, and residents could expect to have their lights back on later in the day.The province reopened all of its beaches and parks on Monday except for Martinique, Lawrencetown and Conrads, which remained closed because of damage to boardwalks and stairs.Flights were back on schedule at the Halifax airport, and Marine Atlantic resumed its ferry run between North Sydney and Port Aux Basques, N.L.

Strongest winds offshore
Peter Bowyer of the Canadian Hurricane Centre rejects suggestions that Bill didn't live up to its billing. It's not a weak storm at all,he said Sunday.I think the highest [wave] we've seen at one of our buoys is 26 metres, and pretty well all along the coast of Nova Scotia has been experiencing nine-to-10-metre waves. Some people ignored the warnings to stay away from the Atlantic coastline. At Peggys Cove, three men who snuck past a roadblock were hit by a giant wave, but were not hurt. A gift shop in the village was swept off of its foundation. At Queensland Beach, swimmers were warned they could be fined $800 if they didn't get out of the water. In the U.S., dangerous waves from Hurricane Bill are being blamed for the deaths of at least two people.A seven-year-old girl died in Maine after being swept into the water with her father and another girl. In Florida, a 54-year-old swimmer died after he was washed ashore unconscious.Nova Scotia EMO officials were still cautioning people about the dangers at the coast on Monday. With files from The Associated Press.

Kenya's rural drought hurts city dwellers By TOM ODULA, Associated Press Writer AUG 25,09

NAIROBI, Kenya – Crops have shriveled, hundreds of cattle are dead and the World Food Program said Tuesday that 3.8 million Kenyans need emergency food aid because of a prolonged drought, which is even causing electrical blackouts in the capital because there's not enough water for hydroelectric plants. With rivers thinning to a trickle and mountaintop glaciers shrinking, authorities this month began rationing power in the capital, darkening homes and businesses at least three days a week. In Nairobi's posh, leafy neighborhoods, light bulbs flicker as generators rumble to life. Gym treadmills in luxury hotels jolt to a halt. The slums, where roughly half the capital's 4 million residents live, are being hit the worst. Taps have run dry and residents often wait for days for trucks to deliver expensive potable water.

Business owners say they're losing money, harming Kenya's rebound from the violent aftermath of a 2007 presidential election that eviscerated the economy and killed more than 1,000 people. In Nairobi's Kosovo slum, hotel manager Irungu wa Kogi said he's already laid off two waiters. Before the power cuts, the main attraction at his small, tin-roofed hotel was a television. Now the television — and the restaurant — are silent.A lot of young men are becoming unemployed and they can't provide for their families, he said. Crime will definitely go up.Prime Minister Raila Odinga this month warned of a catastrophe if seasonal rains don't come in October ad November, expressing fear that inter-clan violence could ensue. Kenya's grain harvest is expected to be 28 percent lower. Food prices have jumped by as much as 130 percent.

In Nairobi's sprawling Kibera slum, tailor Joseph Owino, 40, said he expects that power cuts and customer's financial problems will slash his income this month by some 80 percent, to less than US$12 (euro8.38). He and his six children now eat a meager breakfast of maize meal and black tea and skip lunch. We buy hoofs which have been thrown away and cook them with vegetables so that it has a meaty taste, he said. Don't even ask me the last time I drank a soda.In the parched countryside, its even worse. In many places, the air stinks of rotting cattle carcasses.Peruan Lesakut, a Maasai herdsman, said he had 120 cattle in July but now has only 56, all emaciated.I cannot sell my animals, he said. I will stay here until they all die.Eunice Wairimu's maize, bean and potato harvests on her small farm in Laikipia, 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of Nairobi, have failed for the past three years. The 45-year-old relies on handouts from the U.N.'s World Food Program.I can't say the last time I used sugar or ate meat, she said in her one-room home.Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist, told The Associated Press she is worried about Kenya's future. We see carcasses of animals everywhere, said Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her work in conservation, women's rights and clean government. You could easily see carcasses of people everywhere. The WFP has called for US$230 million (euro160.58 million) in donations to feed hungry Kenyans.Life has never been easy for the poor in Kenya, but right now conditions are more desperate than they have been for a decade, said Burkard Oberle, WFP's Kenya Country Director. WFP already is providing emergency food aid to some 2.5 million Kenyans, but another 1.3 million still need help, said spokeswoman Gabrielle Menezes.

Most doctors reject swine flu vaccine
HealthCareRepublic August 25, 2009

Up to 60% of GPs may choose not to be vaccinated against swine flu, with many concerned about the safety of the vaccine, a GP newspaper survey suggests.Of 216 GPs who responded to the survey, 29% said they would not opt to receive the swine flu vaccine and a further 29% said they were not sure whether they would or not.Of those who would refuse vaccination, 71% said they were concerned that the vaccine had not been through sufficient trials to guarantee its safety.Professor David Salisbury, DoH director of immunisation, told Healthcare Republic, the website for GP newspaper, that frontline health workers have a duty to themselves regarding vaccination. They have a duty to their patients not to infect their patients and they have a duty to their families,he said.I think you solve those responsibilities by being vaccinated.

White House Panel: 90,000 Could Die in U.S. From Swine Flu Posted: 08/25/09

Swine flu could hospitalize 1.8 million Americans and kill up to 90,000 this fall, according to a new report from a presidential panel that has studied the virus, also known as H1N1. The 68-page report outlines a plausible scenario in which 60 million to 120 million people contract the virus, and as many as 300,000 require intensive care. By contrast, about 200,000 Americans are hospitalized with standard strains of influenza each year, leading to 36,000 deaths. Hospitals would be overwhelmed by a major outbreak, and one expert says the looming crisis will stress every aspect of the health care system. Worry about the spread of H1N1 has been mounting as schools reopen for the fall term. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimate that nearly 2 million Americans have already been infected with swine flu, though only 522 have died. Most of the victims in a pandemic would be children and young adults. The panel's report calls for intensified tracking efforts, along with precautionary measures that could limit exposure, such as ensuring that infected people get refunds to sporting events.Public health officials are already on the case, but their efforts are behind schedule. The Washington Post reported last weekend that the government plans a sweeping vaccination campaign this fall to immunize at least half of the country's population. It would be the most ambitious program of its kind in human history, but the scientists involved face a number of obstacles: They are still testing the vaccine for safety, and have not yet determined the correct dosage. Only a third of the vaccine necessary is expected to arrive by the time the campaign begins in mid-October.National Health Service officials in the U.K. are preparing for outbreaks on a similar scale, predicting in July that swine flu would infect a third of Britain's population and kill as many as 65,000. British scientists have also been racing to test vaccines. Some doctors have warned that a vaccine could cause Guillain-Barre syndrome, a paralyzing disorder linked to a 1976 effort to vaccinate against swine flu in the U.S.

Swine flu shot protection? Maybe by Thanksgiving By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer – AUG 24,2009

ATLANTA – It will likely be Thanksgiving before a significant number of Americans who get the swine flu vaccine are protected, health officials said Monday.Roughly 50 million doses of vaccine are expected to be available by mid-October. But for those who get initial doses right away, that will only mark the beginning of a vaccination process that will take five or more weeks. Here's why: Health officials believe most people will need two shots, spaced three weeks apart, and it will take a week or two after the second dose before immunity kicks in. That's five or six weeks in all. That means large numbers of Americans won't be fully immunized until Thanksgiving, said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, speaking to reporters in Atlanta.Health officials don't really know if that's good or bad news. Since it was first reported in April, swine flu has turned out to be not much more dangerous than seasonal flu, overall. Government experts say it may soon become just another variety of the flu, and perhaps will conform to the seasonal flu calendar — vaccinated against in the fall, suffered through every winter.

But swine flu cases have persisted through this summer, especially in camps and other places where kids congregate. It's possible they will explode not long after kids return to schools and colleges this fall.Hopefully we will have a mild presentation this fall with limited cases of serious illness and few deaths, Sebelius said during a visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Clinical trials started just this month to evaluate the new vaccine's safety and effectiveness, and the first substantial set of results is not expected until next month. Health officials presume there will be a fall campaign to encourage people to get swine flu vaccinations that will be called off only if something unexpected and alarming emerges in the clinical trials, CDC spokespeople said. Also Monday, the White House released a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology that assessed the nation's swine flu preparations. The panel predicted 20 to 40 percent of the U.S. population will suffer swine flu symptoms this fall, and about half will get sick enough to go to the doctor. The panel also estimated the virus will cause between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths, concentrated among children and young adults. Seasonal flu, in contrast, kills an estimated 36,000 people every year. The panel also recommended that vaccine manufacturers step up production so at least 40 million doses are available by mid-September to start immunizing children and others at higher risk of serious swine flu complications. However, vaccine makers have said they've had trouble producing large quantities of doses as quickly as was originally hoped.

Up to 11,000 U.S. veterans may have been mistakenly infected with HIV
Big News Network.com Monday, August 24, 2009

11,000 veterans who had colonoscopies at U.S. Veterans Affairs hospitals may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.The veterans were advised equipment used during their treatment was not sterilized. Of those so far that responded by having follow-up blood checks, 8 have tested positive for HIV. Twelve of the veterans have tested positive for hepatitis B, and 37 have tested positive for hepatitis C.
This week it was learned a 55-year-old North Miami man, Juan Rivera, a thirteen-year Army veteran with a wife and 5 children, filed notice last month that he will sue the Federal Government claiming he was infected with HIV during a colonoscopy at the Miami Veterans Administration hospital. He had a colonoscopy at the hospital in May last year.

Rivera is suing the government for $20 million.
On March 28, the VA department wrote to more than 3,000 veterans who had colonoscopies at the Miami VA hospital advising them that improperly cleaned equipment might have exposed them to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.VA officials say endoscopy equipment was rinsed instead of being sterilizing as was required by the manufacturer’s directions.Similar problems were uncovered at VA hospitals in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Augusta, Ga. The total number of veterans subsequently blew out to more than 11,000.Following congressional inquiries, Miami VA hospital director Mary Berrocal disciplined up to 10 employees.

Athens fires recede but officials still wary By NICHOLAS PAPHITIS, Associated Press Writer – Mon Aug 24, 4:14 pm ET

ATHENS, Greece – A massive wildfire that destroyed homes and forests receded Monday as a multinational airborne effort beat back flames that at one point threatened Athens' northern suburbs and raged near the ancient battleground at Marathon. As winds died down late Monday, Greek Fire Brigade spokesman Yiannis Kappakis said there were no significant active fronts left of the fire, which for days has sent a pall of smoke over the capital, plunging parts of it into a brown half-light.Kappakis said more than 1,000 firefighters and soldiers would remain on duty in case the blazes revived. The danger of the fires flaring up again is not yet over, he said. Since Saturday the fire has razed some 21,000 hectares (51,890 acres) of pine forest, olive grove, brush and farmland, according to the European Commission's European Forest Fire Information System. Greek officials say 150 homes were damaged.Experts warned it would take generations to replace the lost forests, many of which were burnt beyond the hope of natural regrowth.Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes, and elderly nuns were evacuated from the threatened convent of Saint Ephrem near the coastal town of Nea Makri — carrying the saint's relics with them.

The flames were 30 meters (100 feet) high, said one of the nuns evacuated, wearing a black habit and a surgical mask to ward off the smoke and grit. Thankfully they came and rescued us.At least five people were treated for burns and several dozen reported breathing problems, but no injuries were serious, the Health Ministry said.Other major fires still burned near the coastal town of Porto Germeno, northwest of Athens, and near villages on the Evia island, east of the capital.Nineteen water-dropping planes and helicopters — including aircraft from Italy, France and Cyprus — unleashed some 14,000 tons of water on Monday that helped contain the biggest blaze near Athens.

The European Commission said in a statement it was the biggest coordinated emergency operation this year. Before the blaze was contained, flames tore down a hillside toward houses near coastal Nea Makri, where volunteers with water-soaked towels wrapped around their necks beat back the flames with tree branches.Fires also threatened the ancient fortress town of Rhamnus, home to two 2,500-year-old temples.

Officials have not said what started the fires. Hundreds of forest blazes plague Greece every summer and some are set intentionally — often by the unscrupulous land developers or animal farmers seeking to expand their grazing land. Many have said Greece's conservative government showed it had learnt little from the wildfires of 2007 — the Mediterranean country's worst in decades — which killed 76 people and laid waste some 275,000 hectares (679,500 acres).A complete overhaul is required in the way we deal with forest fires ... There is no sign the (government) is moving the right direction, said Dimitris Karavellas, director of the environmental group WWF in Greece. He said state planners made insufficient use of volunteer groups and failed to crackdown on rogue developers who build homes illegally in burnt forest areas.A lot of the affected areas have been burned several times, which means these areas will not rejuvenate by themselves,Karavellas said.Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said the firefighting effort was well coordinated. From the first moment, (we had) the presence of personnel on a large scale,he said, also promising that all burnt forests would be replanted and protected from development.Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis visited a fire-plane base to thank pilots who he said surpassed the limits of human endurance.Continue your work and close your ears to those few who from a safe position for their own expediencies attempt (to criticize) everything,he said. The entire Greek nation supports you and is grateful.Greece's National Weather Service said strong winds are expected to ease Tuesday.Associated Press Writer Derek Gatopoulos contributed to this story.

US hopeful for Mideast talks very soon Mon Aug 24, 2:39 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States said Monday it was hopeful about restarting Middle East peace talks very soon as its envoy prepared to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Former senator George Mitchell, the US special envoy for the Middle East, plans to meet with Netanyahu on Wednesday in London to lay the groundwork for new Israeli-Palestinian talks, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.I don't want to go into the details of exactly why, but just to say that we are hopeful that we can resume very soon,Kelly told reporters.Kelly said it was premature to talk of a breakthrough in launching Middle East talks but: We're getting closer to an agreement. He declined comment on whether the United States saw a shift in Israel's position on settlements on occupied Palestinian land -- a key sticking point.US President Barack Obama's administration has been pressing for a freeze on settlement construction as a key step towards reviving peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.Netanyahu rejects a total freeze, but has agreed to a temporarily halt in inviting construction tenders for Israeli homes in the occupied West Bank, which Obama called a step in the right direction.

Netanyahu sees talks with Palestinians in 2 months Mon Aug 24, 8:18 am ET

TEL AVIV (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expects no breakthroughs in a meeting this week with a U.S. peace envoy, though he hopes talks with the Palestinians can resume within two months, a spokesman said on Monday.
Netanyahu, a right-winger in power since March, has resisted Western pressure to freeze Jewish settlements on occupied land where Palestinians seek statehood. The dispute has opened a rare rift between Israel and its top ally, the United States.

Speaking ahead of a European visit during which Netanyahu was scheduled to meet U.S. envoy George Mitchell, spokesman Nir Hefetz told reporters: The prime minister expects there to be a certain degree of progress, but no breakthrough is expected.
Hefetz said Netanyahu, who will also meet British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, would make clear that Israel would attend to the normal needs of its settlers alongside a political process that is to be launched in about two months' time.(Reporting by Allyn Fisher-Ilan; Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Jon Hemming)

Peru police seize cocaine sewn inside live turkeys AUG 24,09

LIMA, Peru – Peruvian police expecting to find a shipment of cocaine hidden in a crate holding two live turkeys were surprised to discover the drug surgically implanted inside the birds.Acting on a tip, officers stopped a Turismo Ejecutivo SRL bus outside the city of Tarapoto in the central jungle state of San Martin, officials said Monday.Police were puzzled when they found the turkeys in the crate, but didn't find the cocaine, Tarapoto's anti-drug police chief, Otero Gonzalez, told the Associated Press. They then noticed that the two turkeys were bloated.Lifting up the feathers of the bird, in the chest area, police detected a handmade seam,he said.A veterinarian extracted 11 oval-shaped plastic capsules containing 1.9 kilograms (4.2 pounds) of cocaine from one turkey and 17 capsules with 2.9 kilograms (6.4 pounds) from the other, he said.

Both turkeys survived the removal.

Police were searching for whoever sent the shipment from Juanjui to Tarapoto, which is on a smuggling route from Peru's east Andean coca-producing valleys to northern coastal cities, where it is sold to Mexican and Colombian traffickers.Gangs often use human couriers who swallow cocaine to sneak it across borders but it is unusual to use animals. In 2005, Colombian police found a total of 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of heroin sewn into the bellies of six puppies during a raid on a veterinarian clinic.

Argentine police discover 4 tons of ephedrine By DEBORA REY, Associated Press Writer – AUG 24,09

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Federal police on Monday uncovered four tons (4,200 kilograms) of ephedrine in oil drums and boxes to be sent to Mexico and the United States. The lead investigator called it the largest illegal shipment of the methamphetamine precursor ever seized in Argentina, worth millions. The ephedrine, was imported from India and China, and discovered with the help of U.S. Drug Enforcement and Interpol agents who have advised police investigating a group of Argentines and Mexican traffickers, Commissioner Miguel Castro told The Associated Press.Castro, superintendent of investigations for the federal police, said the boxes were hidden in a furniture warehouse and the drums were found in another warehouse where one employee was arrested. The chemical is worth $4,000 to $6,000 a kilogram on the street in Argentina, but the traffickers planned to ship it to Mexico, where it sells for between $10,000 and $15,000 a kilogram to gangs that make methamphetamine for U.S. consumers, Castro said.Investigators suspect the chemical remained hidden since last year following the execution-style killings of three Argentines, allegedly by Mexican hit men, in August 2008.Two of the victims owned pharmacies that imported large quantities of the chemical for use in cold medicines, but allegedly intended to sell it instead to gangs from Mexico, which banned the substance in 2007.Forced to acknowledge how Argentina's wide-open ephedrine market was attracting Mexican cartels, the government ordered drugmakers at the end of 2008 to obtain prior approval before importing the chemical.Monday's discovery is the second this month. Another four tons of properly declared ephedrine was discovered abandoned in a customs service depository in the port of Buenos Aires. Castro said the two discoveries are unrelated, and that police are still trying to determine if that ephedrine is legal. All eight tons will remain under a judge's supervision while cases are pending, and then be destroyed, Castro said.

FROM WND'S JERUSALEM BUREAU Palestinian police directing traffic in Israel's capital Move would mark major escalation of Arab activities in Jerusalem August 24, 2009 10:06 pm Eastern By Aaron Klein 2009 WorldNetDaily

JERUSALEM – Palestinian Authority security forces directed traffic several times this month in the eastern sections of Jerusalem, according to multiple witnesses speaking to WND.The moves, if verified, would mark a major escalation in PA activities in Jerusalem.PA President Mahmoud Abbas three times this month quietly visited Beir Hanina, a largely Arab town in eastern Jerusalem. Each time, his convoy passed through French Hill, a northeastern Jerusalem community that is largely Jewish. One local witness driving through French Hill last week while Abbas' convoy passed told WND he was stopped by uniformed Palestinian police, who asked him to wait until the motorcade passed. Two witnesses in Beit Hanina earlier this month also said they personally witnessed uniformed PA police direct traffic in that area for Abbas' two previous visits there. While Beit Hanina is largely Arab, it falls entirely within the Jerusalem municipal district, with security provided by the Israeli police. According to Israeli law, the PA is not allowed to operate in Jerusalem. Abbas' office bureau refused to confirm or deny whether the PA directed traffic in any Jerusalem area for the Palestinian leader's trip. The bureau told WND only that the Israeli police were responsible for Abbas' visit, but that the police coordinated with PA security forces.Shmulik Ben Ruby, a spokesman for the Jerusalem police strongly, denied any knowledge of the PA police operating in Jerusalem during Abbas' trip.We don't know anything about it,he told WND.The PA police are not allowed to operate in east Jerusalem. However, WND previously exposed that the PA police were operating for some civilian matters in peripheral eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods, a contention later admitted by Ben Ruby. If there are fights between some local families, sometimes we involve the PA police to make peace between the families,he told WND.Yes, the PA police can operate in these neighborhoods in coordination with the IDF and Border Police.Israeli security officials previously told WND the local Jerusalem police rarely operate in several Arab-majority eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods, including Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis; instead security has been turned over to the Israel Defense Forces and Border Police, who work almost daily with PA security forces. The PA police operate in the Jerusalem neighborhoods in coordination with Israel.Arabs illegally are squatting in those neighborhoods, constructing homes on Jewish-owned land.

Israel has already forfeited Jerusalem?

Sections of Jerusalem have essentially been forfeited on the ground to the PA, while Jews, including local landowners, are barred from entering parts of Israel's capital, a WND investigation found in March. The probe further determined the U.S. has been aiding the Palestinians in developing infrastructure in Jerusalem. Also, it has emerged, the Israeli government has failed to stop Arabs from illegally building thousands of housing projects on Jerusalem land purchased and owned by a U.S. Jewish group for the express purpose of Jewish settlement, culminating in an Arab majority in the neighborhoods. The situation has been unfolding in the northern Jerusalem neighborhoods of Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis, which are close to the Jewish neighborhoods of Neve Yaacov and Pisgat Zeev in Israel's capital. Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis are located entirely within the Jerusalem municipality.A tour of the three Jerusalem neighborhoods in question finds some surprising developments. Official PA logos and placards abound, including one glaring red street sign at the entrance to the neighborhoods warning Israelis to keep out.Another official sign, this one in Kfar Akeb in Jerusalem, reads in English, Ramallah-Jerusalem Road. This project is a gift form (sic) the American people to the Palestinian people in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority and PECDAR. 2007.The sign bears the emblems of the American and PA governments and of the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID. The displays were not present during a previous WND tour of the neighborhoods in 2006.Some local schools in the Jerusalem neighborhoods are officially run by the PA – some in conjunction with the U.N. – with many teachers drawing PA salaries. Civil disputes are usually settled not in Israeli courts but by the PA judicial system, although at times Israeli courts are used depending on the matter.Councils governed by PA President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah organization oversee some municipal matters. USAID provides the PA funds for road and infrastructure projects.

Jews barred from sections of Jerusalem

In another recent development, Israeli Jews, including local property owners, have been almost entirely barred from entering Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis, while Israeli Arabs can freely enter.Aryeh King, a nationalist activist who holds the power of attorney to some Kfar Akeb land owned by an Israeli Jew, told WND he was barred several times during the past few months from entering the neighborhood to administer to the land, upon which local Arabs illegally constructed apartments. Police spokesman Ben Ruby explained this new arrangement is due to security concerns. It's quite dangerous to be there alone, so if they don't have to be there it's not allowed, because they might find themselves in danger if they go in,said Ben Ruby. In 2002, in response to the outbreak one year earlier of the Palestinian intifada, or terrorist war against the Jewish state, the Israeli government constructed its security barrier blocking off the West Bank from Jewish population zones. The route of the fence also cut into northern and eastern Jerusalem, incorporating Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis on the so-called Palestinian side. Israel recaptured northern and eastern Jerusalem, including the Old City and the Temple Mount – Judaism's holiest site – during the 1967 Six-Day War. The Palestinians, however, have claimed eastern Jerusalem as a future capital. About 244,000 Arabs live in Jerusalem, mostly in eastern neighborhoods, out of a total population of 724,000, the majority Jewish.Jews lived in Kfar Akeb, Qalandiya and Samir Amis years before the establishment of Israel in 1948, but they were violently expelled during deadly Arab riots in 1929.Jordan, together with other Arab countries, attacked Israel after its founding in 1948 and administered the three Jerusalem neighborhoods as well as all of eastern Jerusalem following an armistice agreement. In 1967, Jordan attacked again and Israel liberated the entire city of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War. During the period of Jordanian control, some new construction took place, including in areas previously purchased by Jews.According to Israeli law, the PA cannot officially meet in Jerusalem. The PA previously maintained a de facto headquarters in Jerusalem, called Orient House, but the building was closed down by Israel in 2001 following a series of suicide bombings in Jerusalem. Israel said it had information indicating the House was used to plan and fund terrorism.Thousands of documents and copies of bank certificates and checks captured by Israel from Orient House – including many documents obtained by WND – showed the offices were used to finance terrorism, including direct payments to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group

U.S. Jewish group to blame for division of Jerusalem? Key land in Qalandiya and Kfar Akeb is owned by a U.S. Jewish group that over the years has allowed tens of thousands of Arabs to illegally squat on its land, resulting in the current Arab majority. The Jewish National Fund, or JNF, purchased the land in the early 1920s using Jewish donor funds for the specific purpose of Jewish settlement. The JNF lands have been utilized for the illegal construction of dozens of Arab apartment buildings, a refugee camp and a U.N. school.A previous tour of Qalandiya and Kfar Akeb found dozens of Arab apartment complexes, a Palestinian refugee camp and a U.N. school for Palestinians constructed on the land.According to officials in Israel's Housing Ministry, Arabs first constructed facilities illegally in Qalandiya and Kfar Akeb between 1948 and 1967, prior to the 1967 Six-Day War during which Israel retook control of the entire city of Jerusalem.Qalandiya, still owned by JNF, came under the management of the Israeli government's Land Authority in the late 1960s.Ministry officials say the bulk of illegal Arab construction in Qalandiya occurred in the past 20 years, with construction of several new Arab apartment complexes taking place in just the past two years.Neither the Israeli government nor JNF took any concrete measures to stop the illegal building, which continues today with at least one apartment complex in Qalandiya under construction.Land in another Jerusalem neighborhood, Shoafat, which has an estimated value of $3 million, was also purchased by JNF in the early 1900s and fell under the management of the Israel Land Authority about 40 years ago. Much of the illegal Arab construction in Shoafat took place in the past 15 years, with some apartment complexes built as late as 2004.In Qalandiya and Shoafat, Israel's security fence cordons off the Arab sections of the JNF lands from the rest of Jewish Jerusalem.Internal JNF documents obtained by WND outline illegal Arab construction on the Jewish-owned land. A December 2000 survey of Qalandiya summarized on JNF stationery and signed by a JNF worker states, In a lot of the plots I find Arabs are living and building illegally and also working the JNF land without permission. The JNF survey goes on to document illegal construction of Arab apartment complexes and the U.N. school under the property management of Israel's Land Authority.

Group misleading donors?

In response to a previous WND exclusive report on the JNF's alleged mismanagement of the properties, JNF CEO Russell Robinson sent statements to concerned donors that the illegal construction occurred during periods the Jerusalem land was occupied by Jordan.1991 photo of Shoafat shows region entirely forest land .During that time the Jordanian government oversaw all activities, including the U.N. building. Under international law, this makes matters pertaining to the land more complicated than what [WND describes],states Robinson's letter.1967 aerial photo of Qalandiya region

But WND obtained aerial photos of the two JNF sites in question, Shoafat and Qalandiya, which Robinson claimed were illegally built upon prior to 1967.A photo taken in 1991 of Shoafat shows the entire area was a forest – meaning all illegal Arab construction took place after 1967 while the land was under Jewish control. An aerial photo taken in 1967 of the second site, Qalandiya, which is now a large Arab town, finds construction of a U.N. building but few other sites, indicating the vast majority of Arab construction – dozens of large apartment complexes – occurred under JNF control. WND originally reported some of the construction took place prior to 1967, but the bulk of the building occurred the past few years, under Jewish management.

Obama breaks vacation, keeps Bernanke at Fed By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer – AUG 25,09

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. – President Barack Obama announced Tuesday he wants to keep Ben Bernanke on as Fed chairman, saying he shepherded America through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.Ben approached a financial system on the verge of collapse with calm and wisdom; with bold action and out-of-the-box thinking that has helped put the brakes on our economic freefall, said Obama, with Bernanke standing by his side.Almost none of the decisions he or any of us made have been easy.Obama made the announcement while on vacation on the island of Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts after aides said initially that the president intended a news-free week there. Both he and Bernanke sported the open-collar look.Bernanke, 55, is credited with turning the economy away from its deepest and longest recession since the 1930s. Now he faces the challenge of meeting White House expectations to chart the full economic recovery considered critical to Obama's legacy. In sticking with a Republican for the nation's top banker, the Democratic president was aiming for stability at a time of continuing, though easing, crisis. The move was designed to reassure the U.S. financial sector as well as foreign central banks that the Obama administration isn't changing course on its largely well-received approaches to the financial meltdown and overall monetary policy. The announcement also came nearly concurrently with a piece of bad economic news. Obama interrupted his vacation to telegraph his decision just ahead of a White House report that gave more bleak assessments of the nation's deficit picture.

Figures released by the White House budget office on Monday foresee a cumulative $9 trillion deficit from 2010-2019, $2 trillion more than the administration estimated in May. Moreover, the figures show the public debt doubling by 2019 and reaching three quarters the size of the entire national economy. Also Monday, analysts with the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected a cumulative $7 trillion deficit from 2010-2019, more in line with the administration's May estimate. The White House said Obama decided on the last-minute schedule addition to help put him more in vacation mode. There's been a lot of speculation out there, and the president wanted to put it to rest,Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters as the presidential entourage headed from the site of the announcement to a golf course.

Bernanke's early tenure was as complicated as the crisis facing the banks he sought to save.

The Fed chairman's successful, although unconventional, strategy to move the economy away from recession, unlock frozen credit and stabilize spiraling financial markets depended in large part on creating radical and unprecedented lending programs. But he's not without his detractors, and the Democratic chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Connecticut's Chris Dodd, immediately warned of a thorough hearing before Bernanke would be confirmed for a second four-year term. With such controversy surrounding some of his decisions, Bernanke's fate had been the subject of speculation for months. Many on Wall Street and in academic circles had viewed Bernanke as the best choice to tackle continued high unemployment, fight off any threat of inflation and take on the next set of risky, difficult decisions.Announcing his decision to bypass prominent Democratic economic figures for the job, Obama had nothing but praise for Bernanke. The president also put in a plug for his own administration's actions to stabilize the financial system, restructure the auto industry and approve $787 billion in stimulus spending.Appearing in makeshift press workspace on the island, Bernanke said that if confirmed by the Senate, he'd work to provide a strong foundation for growth and stability in the economy. The Federal Reserve, like other economic policy makers, has been challenged by the unprecedented events of the past few years,Bernanke said.We have been bold or deliberate as circumstances demanded, but our objective remains constant: to restore a more stable financial and economic environment in which opportunity can again flourish and in which Americans hard work and creativity can receive their proper rewards. The economy is emerging from recession and is poised for growth. However, it will be slow-going and the unemployment rate, now at 9.4 percent, is likely to top 10 percent this year before it starts going down. For Obama, there was little political downside in choosing to nominate Bernanke. The move displays bipartisanship and a steady, unchanging hand on the economic tiller. Fully occupied with an attempted health care overhaul, Obama's team could little afford the distraction of changing the head of the Fed.Bernanke was appointed Fed chairman by President George W. Bush and sworn in Feb. 1, 2006, following Alan Greenspan's 18-year tenure.Associated Press writers Jim Kuhnhenn in Washington, Jeannine Aversa in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Glen Johnson and Jason Bronis in Oak Bluffs, Mass., contributed to this report.

AP source: Obama to nominate Bernanke to 2nd term By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer – AUG 24,09

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. – Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, widely credited with taking aggressive action to avert an economic catastrophe after the financial meltdown last fall, will be nominated by President Barack Obama for a second term, The Associated Press learned Monday night.Obama plans to make the announcement on Tuesday during a break from his vacation on Martha's Vineyard. A senior administration official discussed the nomination on the condition of anonymity because it was not yet public. In remarks prepared for the announcement, Obama praised Bernanke for leading the country through a financial crisis and, with his expertise on the Great Depression, helping to prevent a similar crisis.Ben approached a financial system on the verge of collapse with calm and wisdom, with bold action and outside-the-box thinking that has helped put the brakes on our economic free-fall, Obama said in prepared marks obtained by the AP.The actions we have taken to stabilize our financial system, repair our credit markets, restructure auto industry and help the overall economy recover have all been steps of necessity, not choice. They have faced plenty of critics, some of whom argued that we should stay the course or do nothing at all. But taken together, all of these steps have brought our economy back from the brink. They are steps that are working,Obama said.Bernanke was appointed Fed chairman by President George W. Bush and sworn in February 2006.

Zimbabwe proposes introduction of gold-backed Zim dollar
Reuters Published: 2009/08/20 11:40:25 AM

Zimbabwe’s central bank governor Gideon Gono on Thursday proposed the introduction of a gold-backed local currency, which was destroyed by hyperinflation and replaced by multiple foreign currencies in January.A unity government formed by rivals President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in a bid to end a political crisis introduced multiple foreign currencies to stop sky-rocketing inflation and revive the economy. But Gono, a Mugabe ally whose reappointment last year has been opposed by Tsvangirai, says the shortage of foreign currencies in the country was hurting economic recovery efforts. In an article he wrote in the state-controlled Herald newspaper, Gono urged the re-introduction of the Zimbabwe dollar to ease the liquidity crunch, but said this was not a call for a blind return to the money printing press.Rather, what I am calling for is the guarded reintroduction of the Zimbabwe dollar where such a new currency will be fully backed by credible, tangible and locally available assets, such as gold, diamonds or platinum, among several other possibilities,Gono said.Zimbabwe’s inflation has tumbled from an official annual rate of 231 million% in July 2008 — which independent analysts say was understated — to a monthly rate of 1% in July 2009 following the decision to abandon the local currency.

But the unity government, which says it needs at least $8,3 billion for reconstruction, has so far failed to attract anticipated foreign financial aid, with Western donors demanding broad economic and political reforms.Although Gono also floated the idea of issuing domestic currency under a currency board, he expressed reluctance at the loss of monetary authority that this system would entail. He, however, proposed an independent body to evaluate mineral reserves and recommend the amount of local currency to be issued.Although Finance Minister Tendai Biti was not immediately available to comment, he has previously said the Zimbabwe dollar would not be re-introduced any time soon.

Judge Orders Fed To Disclose Who Received Bailout Trillions
Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Tuesday, August 25, 2009

A New York District Judge has ordered the Federal Reserve to disclose the destination of around $2 trillion dollars in bailout funds after the Fed failed to convince the Judge that the records should be exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.Manhattan Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska rejected the central bank’s argument that the records aren’t covered by the law because their disclosure would harm borrowers’ competitive positions. The collateral lists are central to understanding and assessing the government’s response to the most cataclysmic financial crisis in America since the Great Depression, according to the lawsuit that led to yesterday’s ruling, reports Bloomberg, the news outlet that originally filed the lawsuit.Citing the fact that the US taxpayer is an involuntary investor in the nation’s banks, Bloomberg argued that the risks behind the $2 trillion in lending needed to be made public.

When an unprecedented amount of taxpayer dollars were lent to financial institutions in unprecedented ways and the Federal Reserve refused to make public any of the details of its extraordinary lending, Bloomberg News asked the court why U.S. citizens don’t have the right to know, said Matthew Winkler, the editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News. We’re gratified the court is defending the public’s right to know what is being done in the public interest. The Federal Reserve and Ben Bernanke in particular have attempted to hide the destination of the bailout funds at every step of the way since Bloomberg first filed the lawsuit over nine months ago.During a hearing on Capitol Hill last month, Congressman Alan Grayson confronted Bernanke on which foreign banks had received around half a trillion dollars in credit swaps.
Bernanke responded, I don’t know.Half a trillion dollars and you don’t know who got the money? asked Grayson. It’s no surprise that the Fed is reticent to disclose who got the bailout funds, since the man appointed by Henry Paulson to dole out the ill-gotten gains was none other than his fellow ex-Goldman Sachs executive Neel Kashkari. This level of cronyism undoubtedly ensured that Bernanke and Paulson’s bankster gangster friends were well looked after.President elect Barack Obama, who in a September 22 campaign speech promised to Make our government open and transparent so that anyone can ensure that our business is the people’s business, refused to comment on the story when contacted by Bloomberg, which is no surprise considering the fact that the man who guaranteed change has indicated he will not only follow the Bush administration policy of a socialized financial system, but radically expand it,we wrote in our original story on the lawsuit back in November. That foresight has now manifested itself again today, with Obama set to nominate Ben Bernanke, one of the main architects of the bailout under Bush, as Fed chief for a second term.

PASS ID: REAL ID Reanimated Richard Esguerra Electronic Frontier Foundation
Monday, August 24, 2009

In February, the opponents of REAL ID were given a bit of hope when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that she wanted to repeal the REAL ID Act, the federal government’s failed plan to impose a national identification card through state driver’s licenses. But what has taken place since is no return to sanity, as political machinations have produced a cosmetic makeover called PASS ID that has revived the push for a national identification card. The PASS ID Act (S. 1261) seeks to make many of the same ineffectual, dangerous changes the REAL ID Act attempted to impose. Fundamentally, PASS ID operates on the same flawed premise of REAL ID — that requiring various identity documents (and storing that information in databases for later access) will magically make state drivers’ licenses more legitimate, which will in turn improve national security.Proponents seem to be blind to the systemic impotence of such an identification card scheme. Individuals originally motivated to obtain and use fake IDs will instead use fake identity documents to procure real drivers’ licenses. PASS ID creates new risks — it calls for the scanning and storage of copies of applicants’ identity documents (birth certificates, visas, etc.). These documents will be stored in databases that will become leaky honeypots of sensitive personal data, prime targets for malicious identity thieves or otherwise accessible by individuals authorized to obtain documents from the database. Despite some alterations to the scheme, PASS ID is still bad for privacy in many of the same ways the REAL ID was. And proponents of the national ID effort seem blissfully unaware of the creepy implications of a papers please mentality that may grow from the issuance of mandatory federal identification cards. Despite token provisions that claim to give states the freedom to issue non-federal identification cards, the card will be mandatory for most — the PASS ID Act seeks to require everyone to show the federally recognized ID for any official purpose, including boarding a plane or entering a federal building. At the moment, health care reform is commanding tremendous attention and effort on the hill, so the PASS ID Act seems to be on the backburner for now. But after the August recess, anything can happen. So stay tuned for more about PASS ID and critical opportunities to flag your opposition to this flawed national ID scheme.

White House, Congress projects record deficits By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer – AUG 25,09

WASHINGTON – The federal government faces exploding deficits and mounting debt over the next decade, White House and congressional budget officials projected Tuesday in competing but similar economic forecasts. Both the White House Office of Management and Budget and the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted the budget deficit this year would swell to nearly $1.6 trillion, a record, and far above the then-record 2008 budget deficit of $455 billion. But while figures released by the White House foresee a cumulative $9 trillion deficit from 2010-2019, $2 trillion more than the administration estimated in May, congressional budget analysts put the 10-year figure at a lower $7.14 trillion. One reason for the difference: The CBO projection is based on an assumption that all the tax cuts put into place in the administration of former President George W. Bush will expire on schedule by 2011 as dictated by current law. President Barack Obama's budget baseline, however, hews to his proposal to keep the tax cuts in place for families earning less than $250,000 a year.Beyond the 10-year forecast, the nation will face further challenges posed by rising health care costs and the aging of the population, the CBO said. The budget remains on an unsustainable path over the long-term and will require some combination of lower spending and higher tax revenues, it said. Both forecasts see unemployment rising to 10 percent before falling and both suggest growth will return to the economy later this year but that recovery will be slow after the longest and deepest recession since the 1930s.This recession was simply worse than the information that we and other forecasters had back in last fall and early this winter, said Obama economic adviser Christina Romer. She predicted unemployment could reach 10 percent this year and begin a slow decline next year. Still, she said, the average unemployment will be 9.3 in 2009 and 9.8 percent in 2010. The CBO had similar figures.

Both see the national debt — the accumulation of annual budget deficits — as nearly doubling over the next day. The total national debt, made up of amounts the government owes to the public, including foreign governments, as well as money it has borrowed from itself, stood Tuesday at a staggering $11.7 trillion.Obama himself may have drowned out the rising deficit news with the announcement Tuesday that he intends to nominate Ben Bernanke to a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. The Bernanke news, and a report that consumers are regaining some confidence, may have neutralized any disturbance in the financial markets caused by the high deficit projections. Stocks were up in late morning trading. The deeper red ink and the gloomy unemployment forecast present Obama with an enormous challenge. The new numbers come as he prods Congress to enact a major overhaul of the health care system — one that could cost $1 trillion or more over 10 years. Obama has said he doesn't want the measure to add to the deficit, but lawmakers have been unable to agree on revenues that cover the cost. What's more, the high unemployment could last well into the congressional election campaign next year, turning the contests into a referendum on Obama's economic policies.

Republicans pounced.

The alarm bells on our nation's fiscal condition have now become a siren,Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.If anyone had any doubts that this burden on future generations is unsustainable, they're gone — spending, borrowing and debt are out of control. The revised White House estimates project that the economy will contract by 2.8 percent this year, more than twice what the White House predicted earlier this year. Romer projected that the economy would expand in 2010, but by 2 percent instead of the 3.2 percent growth the White House predicted in May. By 2011, Romer estimated, the economy would be humming at 3.6 percent growth. Both Romer and budget director Peter Orszag said this year's contraction would have been far worse without money from the $787 billion economic stimulus package that Obama pushed through Congress as one of his first major acts as president. At the same time, the continuing stresses on the economy have, in effect, increased the size of the stimulus package because the government will have to spend more in unemployment insurance and food stamps, Orszag said. He said the cost of the stimulus package — which spends most of its money in fiscal year 2010 — will grow by tens of billions of dollars above the original $787 billion. For now, while the country tries to come out of a recession, neither spending cuts nor broad tax increases would be prudent deficit-fighting measures. But Obama is likely to face those choices once the economy shows signs of a steady recovery, and it could test his vow to only raise taxes on the wealthy.Still, 10-year budget projections can be wildly inaccurate, said Stan Collender, a partner at Qorvis Communications and a former congressional budget official. Collender notes that there will be five congressional elections over the next 10 years and any number of foreign and domestic challenges that will make actual deficit figures very different from the estimates. The Obama administration did tout one number in its budget review: The 2009 deficit is now expected to be $1.58 trillion, $263 billion less than projected by the White House in May. That's largely because the White House removed a $250 billion item that it had inserted as a place holder in case banks needed another bailout. Associated Press Economics Writer Christopher S. Rugaber contributed to this report.

Euro area industrial orders up in June
LEIGH PHILLIPS 24.08.2009 @ 17:59 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Industrial orders in the eurozone were up by 3.1 percent in June compared with the previous month, in further signs that Europe is steadily crawling its way out of the worst of the economic crisis.Nevertheless, hopes resulting from the figures, issued on Monday (24 August) by Eurostat, the European Union's statistical office, must be tempered by other data issued by the bureau. For the EU as a whole, including countries beyond those member states using the euro, new industrial orders fell by 0.4 percent for the same month after a minor rise of 0.5 percent in May.Any optimism must also be be modulated by a comparison with the same period in 2008, which shows a drop of 25 percent in the euro area and 24 percent for the EU as a whole.Excluding orders from the shipping, railway and aerospace sectors, which tend to be more volatile, still show a drop of 26.7 percent in the eurozone and 25.9 percent in the EU27.The same exclusion for the month of June produces figures showing growth of 1.9 percent for the euro area and 1.1 percent in the entire EU.

New orders for capital goods grew by 5.6 percent in the euro area and by 0.9 percet in the EU27.Non-durable consumer goods increased by 3.1 percent and 1.6 percent respectively.Intermediate goods declined by 0.9 percent in the euro area and by 0.7 percent in the EU27.Durable consumer goods fell by 3.5 percent and 3.6 percent respectively.Among the members of the bloc for which data are available, total manufacturing working orders rose in eleven, fell in eight and remained stable in Portugal. The highest increases were registered in Ireland (+14.8%), Bulgaria (+13.8%) and Hungary (+13.1%), and the largest decreases in Denmark (-29.9%), Poland (-6.7%) and Lithuania (-4.9%).

EU to table new immigration rules in September
LUCIA KUBOSOVA Today AUG 25,09 @ 09:29 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Brussels is finalising fresh proposals on European Union immigration policy, including a potentially controversial system of re-distributing refugees and asylum seekers among the 27 member states to lighten the workload of the bloc's border countries. Both the re-location policy, which could see the transfer of people who land on the shores of Mediterranean countries to other EU states, and asylum policy reform, which could set quotas on the number of refugees for member states, are to be presented in September, Swedish immigration minister Tobias Billstroem has said, according to Agence France Presse. The application of the proposed policies would be voluntary, the Swedish minister added.Sweden, currently chairing the EU, is planning to organise a first discussion on immigration reform among foreign ministers by the end of October. This would only be a first step, as such a big problem cannot be solved in a single meeting, Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, said on Sunday (23 August) on the sidelines of a conference at the Italian seaside town of Rimini, according to Reuters.Italy is one of the Mediterranean countries pressing hard for more help from other member states over immigration flows, along with fellow southern states Malta, Greece and Spain.

Franco Frattini, Italian foreign minister and the ex-EU commissioner responsible for immigration, complained at the Rimini event: The EU has made many statements ...but has not yet said just what should happen when a group of migrants reaches the borders of Europe. All we Europeans, all 27 countries, must bear responsibility for these people,Mr Frattini said.According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 67,000 people crossed the Mediterranean last year to try to irregularly enter Europe, and some of them have died at sea.The most recent tragedy happened late last week. Italian authorities on Thursday (20 August) found a boat carrying five Eritrean migrants who said 73 others had died during the crossing.Last October, EU leaders formally backed the European Pact on Immigration and Asylum, a set of political commitments in five areas - regular and irregular immigration, border controls, asylum policies and co-operation with countries of origin and of transit. The European Commission is by 2012 expected to table its proposal on a single asylum procedure comprising common guarantees ...and a uniform status for refugees and the beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, the pact states.

Greek refugee centre closed

At the same time that the EU presidency announced its plans, another European immigrant camp was criticised by refugee advocates for human rights abuses. The UN High Commission for Refugees on Monday (24 August) called for the immediate closure of an immigrant reception centre on the north-eastern Greek island of Lesbos, accodring to Deutsche Presse Agentur. The UN agency accused the centre of not meeting with European or Greek human rights standards, following the inspection of the over-populated camp.Similar problems occurred in a camp in Pagani, where the reception centre does not have running water and only one toilet for every 100 people while many immigrants are forced to sleep on the ground and are only granted an hour's outdoor recreation time every day.

Gain in consumer confidence sends stocks higher By SARA LEPRO, AP Business Writer – AUG 25,09

NEW YORK – Investors put stocks back on an upward path Tuesday, encouraged by a report that consumers are regaining confidence and news of Ben Bernanke's reappointment as Federal Reserve chairman. The Dow Jones industrial average surged more than 100 points immediately after the consumer confidence report was released, but came off its highs shortly after. The other major stock indexes also gave up some of their gains. The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence index rose to 54.1 this month from an upwardly revised 47.4 in July and far above the 47.5 reading analysts expected.Despite the improvement, the reading is still a long way from showing that consumers are actually feeling optimistic about the economy, which is vital to any potential recovery. Concerns about flagging consumer confidence have triggered bouts of stock selling in recent weeks. The stock market also got a boost from President Barack Obama's reappointment of Ben Bernanke as Federal Reserve chairman and a report showing a jump in home prices in the May-through-June quarter.

Bernanke's reappointment, while expected, came sooner than anticipated and removed any uncertainty about a potential replacement. Bernanke's aggressive moves to limit the damage from the financial crisis, including keeping interest rates at historic lows, have been credited with guiding the economy away from its worst recession since the 1930s.Investors also got more good news on housing. A closely watched index showed home prices posted their first quarterly increase in three years. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller's U.S. National Home Price Index rose nearly 3 percent from the first quarter, though was still down almost 15 percent from the second quarter of last year.In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 67.57, or 0.7 percent, to 9,576.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 6.62, or 0.7 percent, to 1,032.19, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 10.77, or 0.5 percent, to 2,028.75.

About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 379.1 million shares, compared with 356.9 million at the same time on Monday. In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 3.71, or 0.6percent, to 583.95.Stocks were little changed Monday after four days of gains that took the Dow up 370 points and all the major indexes to fresh highs for the year. The market gave up early gains as financials retreated. Regional banks were especially hit hard amid concerns about potential mounting losses from commercial real estate.

The gains on Tuesday follow a trend that has characterized the market throughout the summer, where any dip in stocks or pause in trading is met with more buying as investors fear missing out on an extended rally. Though analysts have been warning of an eventual pullback in stocks after a 52 percent climb in the S&P 500 since early March, the market has yet to see a significant slide. The stair-step advance has been encouraging to analysts, who see it as a sign of strength in the market. It's constructive that we've basically broken out to a new high and we're kind of consolidating and working slowly higher, said Nick Kalivas, vice president of financial research at MF Global.Bond prices fell as the Treasury Department prepared to issue $42 billion in two-year notes. A total of $197 billion in Treasurys will be auctioned off throughout the week as part of the government's ongoing efforts to fund its economic stimulus programs. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.50 percent from 3.48 percent late Monday. The yield on the two-year note rose to 1.05 percent from 1.03 percent. The dollar mostly fell against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.Light, sweet crude fell 61 cents to $73.76 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The gains in the U.S. came amid mixed trading in overseas markets. Asian markets fell on more economic concerns in China, while European markets moved slightly higher. Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 0.8 percent. In afternoon trading, Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.1 percent, Germany's DAX index rose 0.4 percent, and France's CAC-40 gained 0.6 percent.

Stocks pause from recent gains, financials retreat By SARA LEPRO, AP Business Writer – Mon Aug 24, 5:50 pm ET

NEW YORK – Investors slowed their hectic buying of stocks Monday, leaving the major indexes little changed after a four-day advance.Stocks pulled back from early highs as financials, which have been surging lately, retreated. Meanwhile, Treasury prices rallied ahead of the next round of debt auctions.Analysts had expected a pause after stocks soared last week, lifting the Dow Jones industrials 370 points. The advance picked up momentum Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke declared that the economy is on the verge of recovery.I think people still believe there are signs of recovery here, but it doesn't hurt to take a little bit of profits, said Alan Villalon, senior research analyst at First American Funds.Market experts have been warning, though, the market's upbeat mood could be tested with reports this week on consumer confidence and housing. Some signs of recovery have emerged already in housing, but consumers are still struggling. Improved consumer confidence and spending is widely seen as one of the keys that could help end the recession. We're lining up here in advance of the data this week, said James Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. This is a good time to get out.Bank shares gave up some of their early gains and traded mixed, weighed down by losses among regional banks. Investors have been worried that smaller banks could face significant hardships in the coming months as losses among commercial real estate loans pile up.In a research note late Sunday, Rochedale Securities banking analyst Richard Bove predicted that 150to 200 more U.S. banks could fail in the current banking crisis on top of the 81 banks that have already failed this year. The Dow rose 3.32, or less than 0.1 percent, to 9,509.28, after earlier rising as much as 82 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.56, or 0.1 percent, to 1,025.57, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 2.92, or 0.1 percent, to 2,017.98.

Advancing issues were slightly ahead of losers on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.32 billion shares, up from Friday's 5.98 billion. In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies slipped 1.27, or 0.2 percent, to 580.24.Bond prices rose as investors prepared for $197 billion in auctions this week. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.48 percent from 3.57 percent late Friday, while the yield on the three-month T-bill fell to 0.15 percent from 0.16 percent. The markets have been choppy as investors react to mixed economic data, but managed last week to post four straight advances. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 52 percent since early March. We still think there is a lot of fear out there, said Ryan Detrick, chief technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research. The economy has to validate what the stock market has done.Justin Golden, strategist at Macro Risk Advisors in New York, said some of the market's gains have been magnified by short-covering, in which investors have to buy stock after having earlier sold borrowed shares in a bet they would fall.A lot of bear investors have thrown in the towel,he said. That shouldn't be confused with people being ultra bullish about the market.Investors were also anxious ahead of the Conference Board's consumer confidence index on Tuesday, and the Reuters/University of Michigan report on consumer sentiment Friday. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index on home prices for June will be released Tuesday, while the Commerce Department reports on new home sales for July on Wednesday.Japan's Nikkei stock average surged 3.4 percent, while China's main index was up for a third straight day, gaining 1.1 percent. A slide in the index last week triggered selling around the world. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.9 percent, while Germany's DAX index and France's CAC-40 rose 1.0 percent.Oil prices rose 48 cents to $74.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The dollar rose slightly against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Roubini warns of double-dip recession: report Mon Aug 24, 10:54 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nouriel Roubini, one of the few economists who accurately predicted the magnitude of the world's recent financial troubles, sees a big risk of a double-dip recession, according to an opinion piece posted on the Financial Times' website on Sunday.Roubini, a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, said it appears the global economy will bottom out in the second half of this year, and that U.S. and western European economies will likely experience anemic and below trend growth for at least a couple of years.Yet he warned that policymakers face a damned if they do and damned if they don't conundrum in trying to unwind their massive fiscal and monetary stimuli to keep the global economy from toppling into a depression. He said that if policymakers try to fight rising budget deficits by raising taxes and cutting spending, they could undermine any recovery. On the other hand, he said if they maintain large deficits, worries about excessive inflation will grow, causing bond yields and borrowing rates to rise and perhaps choking off economic growth.Roubini said another reason to worry is that energy, food and oil prices are rising faster than fundamentals warrant, and could be driven higher by speculation or if excessive liquidity creates artificially high demand. He said the global economy could not withstand another contractionary shock if speculation drives oil rapidly toward $100 per barrel. NEW YORK (AFP) – Oil prices powered to 10-month peaks Monday amid growing hopes for global economic recovery and China's strong oil data.New York's main contract, light sweet crude for October delivery, settled at 74.37 dollars a barrel, up 48 cents from Friday's close in the fifth consecutive session of gains. The New York benchmark contract had climbed as high as 74.81 dollars in intraday trade, reaching its highest level since October 20.In London, Brent North Sea crude for October climbed seven cents to close at 74.19 dollars.Optimism regarding the pace of economic recovery continues to permeate market sentiment, said Kevin Norrish of Barclays Capital.Markets have found a springboard in US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke's positive comments Friday about the outlook for recovery from global recession.Bernanke, at an annual meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, said Friday that prospects for a return to growth in the near term appear good.Bernanke's remarks sparked a Wall Street rally Friday that extended in Asia and Europe Monday. A positive opening on Wall Street faded amid selling pressure.

The oil market was outperforming considering the dollar was higher and US stocks were fairly flat, said Ellis Eckland, an independent trader. It?s doing that because there?s a tightening in the near-term oil market where fundamentals are starting to turn, Eckland said.Demand is starting to pick up, basically because of the massive increase in the auto fleet in China. Chinese demand is surging. Meanwhile, the Saudis are apparently holding their production flat. The oil market got a massive boost on Monday from data out of China -- the world's second-biggest energy consuming nation after the United States. The main data release has come from China, said Barclays Capital analyst Nicholas Snowdon. The data confirms the recent trend whereby Chinese apparent oil demand continues to grow at a fairly robust pace, driven by a combination of soaring refinery output and lacklustre net product imports.Apparent oil demand in July was above 8.0 million barrels per day (mbpd) for the second consecutive month, up 4.5 percent from the very high base of July 2008.All in all, Chinese oil data for July confirms that the pace of demand recovery remains firmly in place,he said.

New York crude scored 2009 highs last week, rising above 74 dollars on Friday on the back of a weak dollar, an improved US macroeconomic outlook and positive eurozone data, traders said. The US Department of Energy said last Wednesday that American inventories of crude fell by a massive 8.4 million barrels in the week ending August 14. That snapped a three-week run of gains and took traders completely by surprise, with the market having expected an increase of 1.5 million barrels. A slew of economic data released last week meanwhile suggested the US and eurozone economies were likely recovering, boosting hopes that energy demand in turn would see an uptick, analysts said.

India trade team in talks on South Africa pact Mon Aug 24, 3:17 pm ET

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – India and South Africa are in talks on an investment pact that would provide government guarantees to businesses in both countries, Indian Trade Minister Anand Sharma said on Monday. We want to ensure that our investments will remain secure, regardless of the economical conditions, Sharma told journalists after talks with his South African counterpart. If agreed, the deal would increase trade between the two major developing economies, Sharma said.Trade between India and South Africa has seen tremendous growth in the past five years. There is still a lot of untapped potential, said Sharma.South African Trade Minister Rob Davies said trade between the nations tripled between 2003-2007, making India one of the country's top 10 trading partners.Delegations from the two nations on Monday discussed a range of issues aimed at promoting trade and investment between the countries, from aviation to film production. The one-day talks produced an agreement to set up an India-South Africa business leaders forum, where chief executives from both countries will meet twice a year to discuss common interests. The first meeting is expected to take place before President Jacob Zuma's state visit to India, in early 2010.

Plugging Australian oil leak could take weeks Sun Aug 23, 9:21 am ET

PERTH, Australia – Plugging a leak at an offshore drilling rig that has caused an oil slick off Australia will take weeks, the operator said Sunday, though officials said there was little threat of environmental damage.Oil and gas have been leaking from a hole deep beneath the sea floor at the site of the rig between Australia's northwest coast and Indonesia since early Friday. Maritime authorities say the oil slick has been dissipating or evaporating fairly quickly. The slick — measuring about 30 yards (meters) wide and nine miles (15 kilometers) long — is about 150 miles (250 kilometers) northwest of the Kimberley region. It was sprayed Sunday with a chemical dispersant by an Australian Maritime Safety Authority plane. There's no threat to the Australian coast,Resources Minister Martin Ferguson told Network Ten television. It is evaporating naturally and the work of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority will merely assist in that evaporation.Operator PTTEP Australasia evacuated 69 people from the rig on Friday as a precaution against fire breaking out from the condensate oil — a crude petroleum product used for blending — and gas leaking from the rupture about 1 1/2 miles (2.5 kilometers) beneath the sea floor.

No one was injured.

PTTEP chief financial officer Jose Martins said the depth of the leak made it hard to fix and difficult to determine its cause.Martins said a mobile drilling rig had been ordered from Singapore and it would drill a well near the one that is leaking and install a pipe that could pump mud into the hole to plug it.This could take up to seven weeks, Martins said.

COMMENT APR 29,09
The Chinese have 200 million men in their active duty, reserve, active and inactive reserve and people's militia. Thinking China has a 2 million man army is like thinking they spent 8 billion on defense like they say. Delusional. North Korea has 7 million.course if this headline makes UBANGA THE FIRST and Kissinger nervous then DOOMER DOUG is happy. The combat load for an M-16 is 400 223 rifle shells. So every time you see something about a pallet of 100,000 223 rifle shells being sold out at a gun show, just think that an infantry company got a combat load. And DOOMER DOUG certainly hopes that makes all the gun grabbers REAL NERVOUS. he he he Guns and ammo will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no guns and ammo.Impending Doom takes all the fun out of decadent living! SKorea launches 1st rocket, satellite misses orbit By JIN-MAN LEE, Associated Press Writer – Tue Aug 25, 7:44 am ET

GOHEUNG, South Korea – South Korea launched its first rocket Tuesday, just months after rival North Korea's launch drew international anger, but space officials said the satellite it carried failed to enter its intended orbit.A Science Ministry statement called the launch a partial success, as the satellite separated from the rocket normally before entering a different orbit. The launch could boost South Korea's space ambitions, but the North warned it would keep a close eye on the international response. There was no immediate comment from North Korea. The two-stage Naro rocket — delayed several times since July due to technical glitches — lifted off Tuesday from South Korea's space center on Oenaro Island, about 290 miles (465 kilometers) south of Seoul, about 5 p.m. (0800 GMT, 4 a.m. EDT).It was South Korea's first launch of a rocket from its own territory. Since 1992, it has launched 11 satellites, all on foreign-made rockets sent from overseas sites. The rocket, built with Russian help, was carrying a domestically built satellite aimed at observing the atmosphere and oceans.South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said though the satellite failed to enter its planned orbit, it was a half success. We must further strive to realize the dream of becoming a space power,Lee said after a Cabinet meeting, according to his office.

South Korean officials hope the rocket will boost the country's aim to become a regional space power, along with China, Japan and India. North Korea, however, has warned it would "closely watch" how the U.S. and neighboring countries respond to the launch. In April, the North claimed it launched a multistage rocket it said was mounted with a satellite. The U.S., Japan and other nations condemned the launch as a test of ballistic missile technology since the same rocket can be mounted with a warhead. The North, unlike the South, is banned from ballistic missile activity by Security Council resolutions as part of international efforts to eliminate its nuclear and long-range missile programs, which are seen as a threat. After the April launch, the Council slapped Pyongyang with new sanctions.South Korean officials said it is inappropriate to compare their launch with the North's because Seoul's is for peaceful purposes and was carried out with transparency. As I look at the case, our government, as a member of international treaties on nonproliferation, has been engaging in its space development program with a responsible attitude. We've been doing this openly,Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae told reporters. In recent weeks, the North has significantly softened its stance toward the South, freeing a South Korean worker held there for more than four months, agreeing to lift restrictions on border crossings and pledging to resume joint projects and the reunion of families separated during the Korean War.Associated Press writers Hyung-jin Kim and Kwang-tae Kim in Seoul contributed to this report.
