Its No Secret that the Banks Own the Government George Washington Blog Friday, July 3, 2009

It is no secret that the banks own the U.S. government. For example:Leading economist Dean Baker wrote today Banks Own the US Government. The number two ranking Democrat in the Senate, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), said: Frankly, banks own the place.Collin Peterson, Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, said: The banks run the place I will tell you what the problem is they give three times more money than the next biggest group. It’s huge the amount of money they put into politics.Of course, not all banks are equal. For example, Goldman Sachs clearly has a leading role.

Nafta Superhighway Returns From The Dead ,Rick Perry set to push revamped agenda to sell freeways to foreign-owned private companies and convert them to toll roads Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Friday, July 3, 2009

The Trans-Texas Corridor, part of the NAFTA Superhighway projected to link the United States with Canada and Mexico as an integral cog of the North American Union, is back on the agenda after Texas Governor Rick Perry lied in claiming that the proposal was dead earlier this year. The open plan to merge the US with Mexico and Canada and create a Pan-American Union networked by a NAFTA Superhighway has long been a Globalist brainchild, but fierce opposition to the plan from activists across the country has stalled the plan at least temporarily.A key component of the NAU transport system was the proposed Trans Texas Corridor, a massive 4,000 mile network of highways that were to be sold to the Spanish company Cintra and operated as toll roads creating a huge new tax on the American people which would be paid directly to a foreign-owned private company.Texas Governor and Bilderberg invitee Rick Perry launched a PR stunt in January when he claimed that the Trans Texas Corridor was dead, when in reality as Jerome Corsi and others pointed out, the project was merely to have its name changed and its design slightly altered.Close examination shows Perry’s declaration from Iraq involves yet more public relations efforts by the governor and TxDOT to defuse criticism from voters and reposition a hugely unpopular initiative by dropping the designation Trans-Texas Corridor,or TTC,while still allowing TxDOT to proceed with the components of the original TTC plan that had been scheduled for implementation now, wrote Corsi.

Corsi’s warning that the TTC was still very much in the pipeline has proven accurate with the news that the authority of the Texas Department of Transportation, TxDOT, will run for at least 2 more years with a fresh injection of $2 billion in state funds that will be allocated to new transport projects.Using the cover of a special session of the legislature, Perry will push a measure that allows private companies to build more toll roads across the state, according to the Houston Chronicle.Gov. Perry wants to get the legislature to reauthorize through 2013 the ability of Texas to enter into Comprehensive Development Agreements, or CDAs, with foreign developers to develop Texas highways under public-private partnerships, Hank Gilbert, a board member with TexasTurf.org, or Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom, told World Net Daily. We are fighting to defeat any attempt by Gov. Perry to extend CDAs, he said. Without CDAs, TxDOT will have a difficult time getting foreign development companies to come into Texas to convert our freeways to toll roads.Perry’s attempt to force through toll roads owned and operated by foreign companies as part of the wider agenda for a NAFTA Superhighway and a North American Union is a perfect example of how those in power try to neutralize dissent by pulling dirty tricks - claiming a project is dead and then simply renaming it and continuing with the same agenda.
However, the many activist groups opposed to the Trans Texas Corridor were well prepared for this bait and switch. The resistance to the agenda for a NAFTA Superhighway will now rally to fight Perry’s move to sell off key infrastructure to foreign corporations, and in turn create a huge new tax for already financially battered Americans.

New form of El Nino may increase Atlantic storms By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer – Thu Jul 2, 2:03 pm ET

WASHINGTON – El Nino may have a split personality. The warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean has long been known to affect weather around the world, but researchers now say it may come in two forms with different impacts. The traditional El Nino tends to reduce the number of Atlantic hurricanes. But a form Georgia Tech scientists call El Nino Modoki can lead to more hurricanes than usual in the Atlantic Ocean. Modoki, from Japanese, refers to something that is similar but different. The traditional El Nino involves a periodic warming of the water in the eastern part of the tropical Pacific. Indeed, it was first noticed by Peruvian fishermen, who named it after the baby Jesus because it tended to first appear around Christmastime. In El Nino Modoki, on the other hand, the warming occurs farther to the west, in the central Pacific.

It's not clear why this new form is occurring, said Peter J. Webster, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and a co-author of a report on the finding in Friday's edition of the journal Science. It may be responding to some (climate) oscillation or it may be in response to global warming, Webster said in a telephone interview.Regardless of the cause, improved understanding of El Nino and it's cold-water counterpart La Nina could help atmospheric scientists better forecast weather, including the number of Atlantic hurricanes.Traditionally, La Nina has been associated with more Atlantic hurricanes than normal and El Nino with fewer.

Just last month government forecasters reported signs that an El Nino may be developing in the Pacific. So which type might it be? We spent all last week trying to figure that out,Webster said.It looks like it might be a hybrid, with warming starting in the east and them moving west, possibly meaning more hurricanes late in the season.

Co-author Judith A. Curry said she feels that there is about a 50 percent chance that we could have one of the Modoki years emerging by late summer. We'll have to see how it plays out, but we could be seeing increased (hurricane) activity,Curry, chair of atmospheric sciences at Georgia Tech, said in a telephone interview.Greg J. Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research welcomed the study, saying it has important consequences for the predictability of global weather patterns.Predicting the number of Atlantic hurricanes may be improved by breaking El Nino into two modes, eastern Pacific warming and central Pacific warming, Holland, who was not part of the research team, said in a commentary on the paper.Curry explained that the Modoki version of El Nino had been looked at in general by Japanese and Korean researchers, but not in relation to hurricanes. Joining in the project was research scientist Hye-Mi Kim who came to Georgia Text from Korea, she said. The discovery of a different mode of El Nino that led to increased storms was quite startling, she said. In 2004 an El Nino was developing, causing forecasters to expect fewer Atlantic hurricanes. But instead it turned out to be one of the Modoki years. There were 15 named storms, including six major hurricanes. Overall activity was nearly two and a half times the long-term average, resulting in more than 3,100 deaths in the region including 60 in the United States. There was record property damage in the United States. The American Meteorological Society's Monthly Weather Review reported that in 2004 Florida, the Sunshine State, became known as the Plywood State after being battered by Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. The National Weather Service is predicting nine to 14 named tropical storms this year, of which four to seven are likely to be hurricanes.Commerce Secretary Gary Locke has pointed out that more than 35 million Americans live in regions most threatened by Atlantic hurricanes. On the Net:

UPDATE 1-Hong Kong finds 1st case of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1
Fri Jul 3, 2009 8:38am EDT

HONG KONG, July 3 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's health department said on Friday it had detected a case of human swine influenza virus that was resistant to Tamiflu, the main antiviral flu drug. The World Health Organisation has declared a pandemic is under way from the new H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu. This is the first time Tamiflu resistance in HSI virus (was) found in Hong Kong,a spokesman for the health department said in a statement.Only two other cases of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 have been found so far, in Denmark and Japan.According to the statement, the virus was isolated from a specimen taken from a 16-year-old girl coming from San Francisco, who was taken in by the Port Health Office at the Hong Kong International Airport upon arrival on June 11.The virus was identified during the health department's routine sensitivity test of HSI virus to oseltamivir and zanamivir, the spokesman said.

Tamiflu, a tablet known generically as oseltamivir, is made by Switzerland's Roche AG and Gilead Sciences (GILD.O), while Relenza, an inhaled drug known generically as zanamivir, is made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) under licence from Australia's Biota Inc (BTA.AX).The department said that tests showed that the strain was sensitive to zanamivir.Resistance to Tamiflu has been previously documented in the deadly bird flu virus H5N1 and seasonal H1N1 flu.You can always expect a certain number of resistances, said Roche spokeswoman Claudia Schmitt. It does not necessarily mean that the strain is resistant to Tamiflu.(Reporting by Michael Flaherty; Additional reporting by Sam Cage; Editing by Alex Richardson)

WHO warns swine flu unstoppable ,WHO calls for vigilance over swine flu
The UN's top health official has opened a forum in Mexico on combating swine flu by saying that the spread of the virus worldwide is now unstoppable.BBC JULY 3,09

World Health Organization head Margaret Chan added that the holding of the meeting in Cancun showed confidence in Mexico, which has been hard hit. The WHO says most H1N1 cases are mild, with many people recovering unaided. As the summit opened, the UK alone was projecting more than 100,000 new cases of H1N1 a day by the end of the summer. As the peak of the flu season approaches in South America, some areas have declared a public health emergency.El Salvador reported its first death from swine flu, a day after Paraguay reported its first fatality.

Mild symptoms

As we see today, with well over 100 countries reporting cases, once a fully fit pandemic virus emerges, its further international spread is unstoppable,Dr Chan said in her opening remarks. A hospital in Athens, Greece, has been quarantined for swine flu She stressed that the overwhelming majority of patients experienced mild symptoms and made a full recovery within a week, often in the absence of any form of medical treatment. The exceptions, she said, were pregnant women and people with underlying health problems, who were at higher risk from complications from the virus and should be monitored if they fell ill.For a pandemic of moderate severity, this is one of our greatest challenges: helping people to understand when they do not need to worry, and when they do need to seek urgent care,Dr Chan said.Turning to the summit venue, the WHO chief added: Mexico is a safe, as well as a beautiful and warmly gracious, place to visit.Leaders and experts from 50 countries are in Cancun for the two-day meeting to discuss strategies for combating the virus.

It has been more than two months since the initial alert over swine flu.

Since then, the H1N1 virus has entered more than 100 countries, infected more than 70,000 people and killed more than 300 worldwide. Authorities across South America are becoming increasingly concerned as the peak flu season approaches, the BBC's Andy Gallacher reports from Cancun.Schools across Argentina have sent students home and pregnant women have been told they can take two weeks off work to avoid contracting the virus. It is hoped the Cancun meeting will address many of the issues that might help slow the spread of swine flu but, our correspondent adds, many people are concerned that an effective vaccine has still not been developed.

Britain braces for 100,000 swine flu cases a day By MARIA CHENG, AP Medical Writer – Thu Jul 2, 1:10 pm ET

LONDON – Britain faces a projected 100,000 new swine flu cases a day by the end of August and must revamp its flu strategy to cope, the nation's health minister said Thursday.Britain has officially reported 7,447 swine flu cases and three deaths, but officials acknowledge the real number of cases is far higher, since many with the virus have not been tested.Britain is the hardest-hit nation in Europe amid the global swine flu epidemic. Many flu experts believe numbers could jump exponentially now that the virus is entrenched. Because swine flu, or H1N1, is a new virus, few people have any natural immunity, allowing the virus to spread rapidly.Cases are doubling every week and on this trend we could see over 100,000 cases per day by the end of August,Health Minister Andy Burnham told the House of Commons on Thursday.

Britain has been reporting several hundred new swine flu cases daily for the last several weeks. If that surges to 100,000 cases a day by the end of August, there could be 6 million people infected by the fall, or 10 percent of Britain's 60 million population.Since flu spreads more quickly in densely populated areas, cases in Britain will probably be concentrated in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester.Other experts wondered how Burnham came up with the 100,000 prediction.I don't know how they got that figure, said John Oxford, a professor of virology at St. Bart's and Royal London Hospital. It seems like a lot of mathematical modeling and not too much common sense.Oxford predicted swine flu would taper off with the warm weather in summer, when flu viruses usually disappear, before returning in the regular flu season in the winter. He said no one could accurately predict how many cases there might be and that all numbers were just guesses.Britain had been trying to contain the disease by liberally giving out the drug Tamiflu to all suspected swine flu cases and their contacts. Yet many experts have criticized Britain's attempt to contain the outbreak, saying it wastes resources, drugs and could promote antiviral resistance.Burnham said Britain will now only give the antiviral to people believed to have the virus. The World Health Organization has said that 2 billion people could eventually be infected with swine flu worldwide. Most cases are mild and require no medical treatment. More than 77,000 cases, including 332 deaths, have been reported worldwide.

Other countries including Australia, Japan and the United States, initially tried to contain swine flu by giving out Tamiflu widely, but dumped the strategy within weeks.

Still, Britain's top medical officer defended the country's earlier approach. We've been fighting this pandemic very aggressively, Sir Liam Donaldson said during a press conference. We're unapologetic about that.Donaldson said Britain probably had the world's largest stockpile of Tamiflu. The antiviral can alleviate swine flu symptoms and shorten the course of illness by about a day if patients take it within 48 hours of getting sick.Earlier this week, health officials reported the first instance of Tamiflu resistance, in a Danish patient who had been taking the drug. Experts worry that if Tamiflu is given out widely as per Britain's earlier approach that could make it easier for the virus to develop resistance.Burnham said people with swine flu symptoms should check health services websites or call flu hotlines to get help before seeing their doctors. He said patients should stay at home and have friends pick up drugs for them from designated community centers. The sharp jump in Britain's numbers may also reflect the country's previous refusal to look for the disease. When swine flu arrived in the U.K., officials only tested people who had traveled to North America, where the epidemic began, or those in contact with a confirmed swine flu case.

That meant the testing system did not pick up the virus' spread into communities.

WHO's declaration in June that swine flu was a pandemic a global epidemic was made partly because the agency felt some countries, including Britain, were not accurately reporting their swine flu outbreaks. Burnham also predicted the first doses of swine flu vaccine would arrive in Britain in August. Britain has ordered 60 million doses of vaccine, enough to cover the entire population. Other experts, however, doubt the vaccine will be available that quickly, since it needs to be produced, tested in humans and meet regulatory approval a process that may take longer than two months.

Regular flu kills up to 500,000 people a year worldwide, but scientists said just because swine flu is spreading faster does not mean it is getting any more lethal. No one is predicting this will be more deadly, just that there will be more of it, Oxford said.

World health officials tackle swine flu challenges By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ, Associated Press Writer – Thu Jul 2, 4:44 pm ET

CANCUN, Mexico – Swine flu is running wild in the Southern Hemisphere and is spreading rapidly through Europe, with Britain projected to reach 100,000 daily cases by the end of August. The virus is even showing signs of rebounding in Mexico.World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan and health ministers from around the globe huddled Thursday in Cancun for a two-day summit to design strategies for battling the pandemic. Nations attending include the United States, Canada, China, Britain and Brazil. As we see today, with well over 100 countries reporting cases, once a fully fit pandemic virus emerges, its further international spread is unstoppable,Chan said during opening remarks.Mexican officials wanted the meeting held in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun where tourism has plunged to highlight the country's success in controlling its epidemic with a five-day national shutdown of schools and businesses in May.The measures were applauded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and international health officials. Our presence here is an expression of confidence,Chan said.Mexico is a safe, as well as a beautiful and warmly gracious, place to visit. But Mexico is starting to see an increase in swine flu cases in isolated areas. In southern Chiapas state and the state of Yucatan adjacent to Quintana Roo state, where Cancun is located cases have more than doubled in a worrying sign that the country may see a resurgence, especially when its winter flu season begins in November. In the space of a week ending Tuesday, the number of cases in Yucatan state jumped from 683 to 1,362, and in Chiapas from 492 to 1,079, Mexico's Health Department said. During the same week, Quintana Roo reported 102 new cases.

Yucatan and Chiapas officials blamed the spike on outbreaks in schools, which have since closed a few weeks early for summer break. Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said most of those infected were local residents who had recently traveled to northern Mexico.Unfortunately we let our guard down, especially after classes started, and the outbreak is unstoppable, Yucatan Health Secretary Alvaro Quijano told local news media.Mexico has confirmed a total of 10,687 cases to date, including 119 deaths. With the Southern Hemisphere in the midst of its winter flu season, Chan said officials are keeping a close watch on those countries. U.S. Health Secretary Kathleen Sibelius said the United States will give 420,000 Tamiflu treatments to the Pan American Health Organization to be distributed in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Chile's epidemic has followed closely behind outbreaks in Mexico and the United States. Cases in the South American country have swelled to 7,342, including 15 deaths. The government has predicted it could see as many as 140 children hospitalized a day.Argentina, meanwhile, has 1,587 cases and with 26 deaths, ranks third behind Mexico and the United States.Under mounting pressure, the country's new health minister, Juan Luis Manzur, announced more than $250 million in extra anti-flu funding Wednesday and ordered schools suspended for a monthlong winter break. Health experts consulted by Buenos Aires' leading daily newspaper Clarin estimated that 2.5 million, or 20 percent of people in the capital and its suburbs, could catch the virus. The city government declared a health emergency this week, along with the provinces of Jujuy and Mendoza, but the federal government has yet to do so.Mirta Roses, head of the Pan American Health Organization, said a team of 25 experts began working with the South American country this week.Britain, which has officially reported 7,447 swine flu cases, is the hardest-hit nation in Europe. Many flu experts believe numbers could jump exponentially now that the virus is entrenched. British officials had been trying to contain the flu by liberally giving out the drug Tamiflu to all suspected victims and their contacts. Health minister Andy Burnham said Thursday that Britain will now only give the antiviral to people with the virus after forecasting 100,000 new swine flu cases a day by the end of August.

Experts questioned Burnham's prediction.

It seems like a lot of mathematical modeling and not too much common sense, said John Oxford, a professor of virology at St. Bart's and Royal London Hospital. Oxford predicted swine flu would taper off with summer's warm weather. Australia has the most cases in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 4,568 confirmed as of Thursday, an increase of 198 in one day. A 45-year-old man died in the intensive care ward of a Sydney hospital on Monday, becoming the 10th death. Worldwide, there were 332 deaths and more than 77,000 confirmed cases as of Wednesday, according to the latest figures available from the WHO.Researchers say they have discovered why outbreaks have been more like a series of local blazes than a wide-raging wildfire. The new virus has a protein on its surface that is inefficient at binding with receptors in people's respiratory tracts, restricting its ability to spread quickly, according to a report in Friday's edition of the journal Science.Chan emphasized that most people recover from the illness without medical treatment and most who die have underlying medical conditions. She said researchers may have a vaccine by August but tests to determine its safety would need to be done before making it available to the public. She also warned that officials are concerned about the virus mutating.Like all influenza viruses, H1N1 has the advantage of surprise on its side, she said. AP Medical Writer Maria Cheng in London and AP Science Writer Randolph E. Schmid in Washington contributed to this report.

REVELATION 18:1-24 (USA DESTROYED) (TRIBULATION LAST 3 1/2 YEARS CONTINUES)
1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Western Governments Funding Taliban & Al-Qaeda To Kill U.S. Troops, Destabilize Countries ,Sunni terrorist groups armed, funded, and moved around the global chessboard to suit geopolitical agenda of Anglo-American establishment Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Thursday, July 2, 2009
http://www.prisonplanet.com/al-qaeda-are-pawns-of-the-us-military-industrial-complex.html

Recent revelations concerning the U.S. importing Taliban members into Iraq to foster false flag terrorism is merely the tip of the iceberg when compared to the U.S. intelligence complex’s multi-decade history in sponsoring Sunni Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist groups around the world.Wayne Madsen recently revealed how Taliban fighters were being imported from Afghanistan into Iraq to attack civilians and U.S. soldiers, as well as how Muqtada al-Sadr’s al-Mahdi Army was being allowed to import materials to make IEDs.However, this is just one aspect of how the U.S. has used terrorist groups as pawns on the global chessboard, moving them around the globe in line with their geopolitical objectives. As is voluminously documented, the U.S. first worked covertly with Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan from 1979-1989.Following this, the Al-Qaeda pawns were moved on to Bosnia shortly after the outbreak of war in 1992 to fight against Bosnian Serbs who were subsequently the target of NATO air strikes.Following the end of the war, hundreds of Bosnian passports were provided to the mujahedeen by the Muslim-controlled government in Sarajevo, according to Lenard Cohen, professor of political science at Simon Fraser University. This all happened with the approval of the United Nations and the United States, who had brokered the peace deal to end the war. They also set up secret terrorist training camps in Bosnia activities financed by the sale of opium produced in Afghanistan and secretly shipped through Turkey and Kosovo into central Europe, reports the National Post.Shortly before the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the Sunni terrorist groups moved into Kosovo, Serbia’s southern province, to aid the Kosovo Liberation Army, the Albanian terrorist faction that was being supported by the U.S. and NATO in its terror campaign against Serbs in the region. The United States, which had originally trained the Afghan Arabs during the war in Afghanistan, supported them in Bosnia and then in Kosovo, reports the Post.

With the help of Bin Laden’s terror network, backed up by the U.S. and NATO, no less than 90% of Serbians were ethnically cleansed and forced to leave the region, while the international media played its role dutifully in portraying the Albanians as the victims of Serbian aggression. As Professor Michel Chossudovsky writes, The fact of the matter is that the Atlantic Alliance had been supporting a terrorist organization. The KLA was not supporting the rights of ethnic Albanians. Quite the opposite. The activities of this terrorist organization on the ground, in Kosovo, provided NATO and the US with the pretext to intervene on humanitarian grounds, claiming that the Serb authorities had committed human rights violations against ethnic Albanians, when in fact the NATO sponsored KLA was involved in terrorist acts on behalf of NATO, which triggered a response from the Serb police and military.

Barely weeks before 9/11, former members of Al-Qaeda who had subsequently joined the Kosovo Liberation Army were airlifted out of Macedonia by U.S. paratroopers. As German sources reported,Samedin Xhezairi, also known as Commander Hoxha, joined the Kosovo Liberation Army when armed conflict in Kosovo began, fighting in three operation zones. He was a fighter in Chechnya, trained in Afghanistan and acted as the commander of the Mujahideen 112th Brigade operating in the summer of 2001 in the region of Tetovo [Macedonia]. In August of the same year 80 members of the 3/502 battalion of U.S. paratroopers evacuated him from Aracinovo [Macedonia], together with his Albanian extremists and 17 instructors of the U.S. private military company MPRI which was training the Albanian paramilitary formations. In other words, the US military was collaborating with Al Qaeda, which according to the Bush administration was involved in the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon. Yet, the US military was working hand in glove with enemy number one barely a few weeks before 9/11, and we are led to believe that the Bush administration is committed to waging a battle against Al Qaeda, wrote Chossudovsky.Following the invasion of Afghanistan, MSNBC reported that in November 2001, hundreds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters were rescued from Kunduz and flown out on Pakistani air force cargo planes. This could not have possibly happened without the approval of U.S. forces who had secured the region.

With the U.S. now attacking targets in Pakistan under the pretext of going after the Taliban, the lineage of how this situation developed, with the U.S. moving their pawns around the globe at the most opportune times, can be clearly traced. All the more revealing therefore were the comments of Qari Zainuddin, a former Taliban leader who defected to the Pakistani government, alleging that the Taliban were senselessly attacking civilian targets and that they were working with U.S. and Israeli intelligence. A few days after he dropped this bombshell, Zainuddin was shot dead.

Meanwhile, in Iran, A senior member of the Jundullah terrorist group confessed in an Iranian court case to being trained and financed by the U.S. and Israel.Jundullah is a Sunni Al-Qaeda offshoot organization that was formerly headed by alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.Under the 2007 program aimed at destabilizing Iran and fomenting regime change, the U.S. government is arming and bankrolling Jundullah to carry out terrorist attacks in Iran, such as the May bombing of a mosque in Sistan-Baluchestan which killed 25 people. In addition, the fingerprints of another U.S. sponsored terror group, Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO), which was formerly allied with Saddam Hussein in Iraq, have been found in the recent election unrest in Iran. In addition to supporting terror groups from Iraq, the Anglo-American establishment has also staged terror attacks, such as the February 2006 Samarra mosque bombing. And if there aren’t enough terrorists in supply, why not just dress up and pretend to be them? That’s what two British SAS members did when they were caught dressed in Arab garb with fake beards, driving a car full of explosives while shooting at Iraqi police officers in Basra in September 2005.After the SAS men were caught in the act and taken to jail, U.S. and British forces launched a rescue operation, blowing up half the prison and allowing 150 inmates to escape. All over the Middle East and the Balkans, from Afghanistan, to Bosnia, to Serbia, to Pakistan, to Iraq and to Iran, the United States, through black budget programs, has funded and armed Sunni Al-Qaeda terrorist groups to destabilize and topple regimes targeted by the Anglo-American establishment. This documented fact debunks the war on terror as a cruel hoax and exposes how current events in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran are being carefully orchestrated while the media sells the public on the belief that manufactured sock-puppet enemies, and not geopolitical domination and control of resources and the global drug trade, are why these wars are being fought, when in reality groups like Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are firmly in the pocket of the U.S. military-industrial complex.

Ron Paul: Collectivist hate crimes bill a serious threat to freedom of speech
By tmartin • July 2, 2009

This Wednesday afternoon, Ron Paul joined John McManus, David Bruckner, Mary Ruwart and Jim Babka for an insightful discussion of the latest political and economic developments, including the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, a bill that would expand the 1969 US federal hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.

Channel: Fox News Strategy Room Show: Freedom Watch
Host: Judge Andrew Napolitano Date: 7/1/2009

Transcript of Ron Paul’s appearance

Judge Andrew Napolitano: Joining me now from the great state of Texas is Congressman Ron Paul. Congressman, I know you’re on vacation this week, though knowing you, you’re just working in Texas instead of in Washington. Welcome back to Freedom Watch.

Ron Paul: Thank you, Judge. Good to be with you.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: Thank you. The House of Representatives passed this legislation [HR 1913, Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, April 29, 2009, by a vote of 249–175, with support from 231 Democrats and 18 Republicans] and like they sometimes do, they inserted language in there which arguably could be used to stifle hostile or aggressive political speech on the airwaves or, as the legislation says, implicating interstate commerce. Meaning I could say something hostile and putting the mail or put it in FedEx or say something hostile over the Internet or on Fox News, and if the government doesn’t like it, it could come after me. Is freedom of political speech endangered if the Senate passes this and the President signs it into law?

Ron Paul: Oh, it is very much in danger and it’s getting worse. It’s not brand new, it’s just accelerating. I think it started a long time ago when the courts and the legislative bodies decided that speech was not one thing; there was commercial speech and political speech. Once it was accepted that you could regulate commercial speech anytime you please, the next step was political speech, and that’s what we’re moving into. And some in this country happen to believe that the left tend to be better on civil liberties and protection of the first amendment, but I don’t think it was the extreme right that was promoting this type of legislation. It met with the acceptance by many on the right as well. But I think it’s lack of understanding, lack of desire and no real effort to protect freedom of speech. I think they have forgotten the fact that individuals have a right to speak out; it should be protected. The job of the government should be to protect speech, not to regulate it.And I think another thing that happened over the years has been that we started seeing rights as being collective. Then you have group rights, you have rights by belonging to a sexual group, gay groups, and by race, and it shouldn’t be that way. It should be individuals and once they start protecting [groups] it undermines the whole principle of this and we can’t have it.We can have government limited to protecting us against violence and fraud and theft. Unfortunately I see the government being much more involved in violence, fraud and theft and now doing the things that they’re not supposed to be doing. They failed to do the things they were supposed to do and they embark on these other things now like regulation of speech. And I agree with you, I think this is a serious threat to our freedom of speech in this country.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: You and I have argued together and in the same form that the only legitimate role of government is to protect our freedoms. This is the opposite. This is selectively choosing which freedoms to protect and which freedoms to assault. Shall I assume that with the swearing in of Senator Al Franken – sounds weird to say those three words together, Senator Al Franken – that this is likely to pass the Senate and our only hope with respect to it is that the courts will uphold the constitution and strike down the parts of it that so obviously offend the first amendment?

Ron Paul: Yeah, I guess that’s our best hope, but I’ve never been very positive on the courts protecting me. At times we have an occasional ruling but it’s just a shame on the way we’re going, but yes, I think it will pass the Senate rather easily now. The President likes these kinds of thing. Now we will be making judgments on people’s motivation. Two people will be treated differently, there’ll be relative value placed on one group versus another group so you can get a greater penalty and they’ll, Well, we don’t believe in discrimination. But that’s exactly what they’re doing. If it’s a greater penalty for one group against the other one that means you are discriminating against one group. They fail to see people as individuals rather than put them in groups.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: I deplore collectivism, it’s that awful theory that people are judged and evaluated by the groups to which they are members, either by an accident of birth like race or gender or age because they choose voluntarily to belong to a group. But it’s a political philosophy that we have to evaluate with. Before we move on to the Fed and the status of HR 1207, do you think that this particular clause of this statue which would permit prosecution and by the way, it actually says in the statute shall serve a jail term of two years in a federal institution. It’s rare in a statute like that that the penalty is stated and it’s rare that the world ,shall, shall be in there. It’s almost like the judges are being told they have to incarcerate someone convicted if using hostile speech over interstate lines. But my question, Congressman Paul, is do you think that this particular clause in this statute is an end-run around the freedom of the speech on airwaves? Or stated differently, do you think that this is the beginning of the so-called fairness doctrine where they’ll come after me if I say something that’s perceived as hostile to the government.

Ron Paul: I think they’re after the fairness doctrine. They want that and that’s probably a step to they’re moving in, because they’ve been fretting about that for a good many years. So, anything that they can do to move in that direction to control the air waves, they’re going to do it.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: What is the status of your bill to audit the Fed? Is Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts, who is in the chair of the House Financial Services Committee, sitting on it even though more than half the members of the House are co-sponsors? Is there any more push toward it becoming law in light of the President’s proposals to have the Fed of all abominable institutions be the principle regulator of financial institutions in the country?

Ron Paul: I don’t think we’re at a dead end yet with the Banking Committee or with Chairman Frank, although things are moving slower than I would like. We had a hearing scheduled a week or so ago and it came out on a Wednesday and the Fed had a meeting and we were supposed to review this kind of regulations in general and he assured me this is the time to start talking about HR 1207. Then later on he would have another hearing dealing only with HR1207. Well, that particular hearing was cancelled because the Federal Reserve was in session and they couldn’t come over. Then we had this week out of Washington so it remains to be seen whether something will come up next week.

But we’re getting awfully close to wondering whether we’re going a little bit slower than he’s been more or less assuring me. But so far I am still hoping he will come true with his promises that he will hold hearings.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: So just as a matter of the rules of the House of Representatives, could a single person, whether the speaker or the chair of the appropriate committee stop a bill from getting to the floor that had more than half the members of the house as co-sponsors?

Ron Paul: Oh sure, that’s very easy. They just don’t bring it up because they have monopoly control of the floor. So the speaker ultimately has the say and, of course, the majority leader has a lot to say. So Hoyer could bring it up tomorrow if he wants unless Pelosi objected to it, but that’s the way it works all the time. But it has been anticipated this might happen, that’s why there is a rule of discharge petition. Some people think if we have more than 218 people sign on that they have to bring it to the floor. That’s only if you have 218 sign on a discharge petition. Those 72 Democrats that have signed on to the bill will not be signing a discharge petition. If we got two of them we’d be lucky. Some of our allies are a little bit frustrated with me for not immediately starting a discharge petition. And that will not work and besides it would just slow up the process. It will sort of mess up what I’m trying to do now to try to encourage it through the routine channels. But no, you could have 300co-sponsors, they do not need to bring it up unless you have a discharge petition signed.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: So much for what Jefferson called, “the people’s house,” the House of Representatives. On this 4th of July it’s such a joy to be speaking to a champion of personal liberty in the House of Representatives, and I think in all of the government. How would an Audit of the Fed work? I mean, who would conduct the audit and would it ever actually happen or would the Fed just go away or go somewhere before we learned the truth about it? I mean, the truth could be so horrendous that the reaction to the truth would be cataclysmic. There would be some unintended consequence that the Fed might lose all its power.

Ron Paul: Well, the GAO would do it, that’s who does the audits and they’re supposed to be independent and they have a pretty good reputation. But they have been prohibited by law, so if we repeal that prohibition they have to go in and do it. The bill says they have to do it within a year. And I think it would be remarkable to find out exactly what they’ve done, what they’ve agreed to, what kind of commitments they’ve made, what kind of collaborations with other central banks. So I don’t think they’re going to be very happy with that and I think as things move along. And they may have already stopped it by having gotten an assurance from Nancy Pelosi said it will never come to the floor. We don’t know that yet, and we might be able to get them on another bill, so we can’t come to that conclusion. But as far as what the Fed might do is they will resist it all the way. I think right now the big plan is… I think they understand that the dollar reserve standard is done and they will not go back to that. And that’s what you hear about when the Chinese and others, who have a lot of clout now, saying that we have to go to a new system, we have to go to the IMF and we’re going to have another world currency. So by the time we get the books open they’ll try and have some new deal going on someplace else.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: Congressman Paul, on this 4th of July weekend I’m bombarded with even more emails – you probably are as well – than I usually get. And the central question is almost always the same, it’s very poignant this weekend: What can freedom loving Americans do to get freedom back? I mean, there is not a Ron Paul running for office in every state and in every Congressional district. And frequently it’s a choice, as Barry Goldwater used to say, between twiddle dee and twiddle dum. But what can does of us who don’t want twiddle dee or twiddle dum do?

Ron Paul: All I know is it’s probably going to be different for every single one. You do your share of the work and you do it your way and you have a platform. I do it my way and others will have to find a way to do it. They can help you, they can help me, they can run for office. I think the most important thing still is studying. I mean how long did it take you to figure out all of this? It took me a long time. You know, I figured I had to unlearn a lot of things pumped into my head. So it probably took 15to 20 years to figure this whole thing out. So I think the most important thing people do is they study and understand our history, our constitution and what liberty is all about, and there’ll be a place for you. And of course, we’re very much involved with the Campaign for Liberty and others can join in that effort. But each and every individual has a role and a responsibility. And I tell people at my rallies that if you have discovered this and you’ve figured it out and you know what’s wrong, you have a greater burden of responsibility than the people who just go about their daily activities; they don’t know and they don’t care. Once you discover this it’s just natural that you have a great deal of responsibility and that’s where I think we are making some inroads. But it is a personal choice. To me its education and becoming politically active.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: Congressman Ron Paul, it’s always a pleasure. Happy 4th of July to you, Congressman. Thanks for joining us.Ron Paul: Thank you, same to you.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Banksters Love Cap-and-Trade James Corbett The Corbett Report
Thursday, July 2, 2009

The well-placed and well-connected are set to make trillions off new climate bill; economic collapse about to accelerate. The sweeping new bill which just passed the House last Friday, the Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, is ostensibly about climate change, but it is in fact a bill of staggering economic ramifications that is going to accelerate the takeover of the economy by the well-placed financiers who have already plundered the Treasury and the Fed of $12+ trillion and counting. It was rushed through the House in the tradition of such nightmarish legislation as the Patriot Act and the banker bailout of last October: hundreds of pages were added to it at the last minute and it was humanly impossible for anyone to have read it before they voted on it. This, of course, is exactly what Obama promised his administration would never allow to happen, and for good reason; bills passed in this manner are always the result of fear and panic and inevitably results in legislation that would never be passed upon sober second thought. In this case, the rush to pass this new bill was an attempt to stop any scrutiny of a plan that is going to utterly transform the American economy, further centralize control of citizens’ lives in the hands of unaccountable federal bureaucrats and complete the transfer of the American economy from Main Street to Wall Street. And all of this in the name of fighting a threat which itself is a demonstrable fraud. In short, the banksters and bureaucrats are sharpening their knives, preparing to butcher what’s left of the carcass of the United States, and a good portion of the public are not only willing to allow it but are actually clamoring for it.The first thing that needs to be understood about the brand new trillion dollar carbon-trading commodities market that will be brought into existence if this bill passes the Senate is that it is a ripoff designed by and for the very corporate interests the environmentalists claim to be fighting. For an historical precedent of what is being proposed under this cap-and-trade scam one can look to Enron, which immediately found ways to plunder billions of dollars from new energy market legislation passed by the Clinton Administration in 2000. They gave schemes for manipulating billions of dollars out of Californians funny little names like Death Star and even went so far as to rig up a completely fake trading floor in their offices in order to bamboozle investors who were interested in the company’s remarkable success. They got away with it because they were The Smartest Guys in the Room, much brighter than the government bureaucrats who were supposed to stop them from committing such blatant fraud (assuming the regulators weren’t simply paid to look the other way). And now supporters of this new bill are putting their blind faith in these same bureaucrats to regulate a scheme to create a vastly more complex market with hundreds of times as much money at stake. Is it any wonder Enron was a booster for cap-and-trade? That the new carbon trading market can and will be manipulated by the very same financial oligarchs and government bureaucrats who have brought the world to the brink of economic Armageddon is laid bare in a must-read article by Matt Taibi in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. In The Great Bubble Machine Taibi meticulously documents how the amazingly well-connected Goldman Sachs has managed to manipulate and profit from every financial bubble since the Roaring Twenties and how they’re getting set to do it all over again with the creation of a carbon trading bubble:

The bank owns a 10 percent stake in the Chicago Climate Exchange, where the carbon credits will be traded. Moreover, Goldman owns a minority stake in Blue Source LLC, a Utah-based firm that sells carbon credits of the type that will be in great demand if the bill passes. Nobel Prize winner Al Gore, who is intimately involved with the planning of cap-and-trade, started up a company called Generation Investment Management with three former bigwigs from Goldman Sachs Asset Management, David Blood, Mark Ferguson and Peter Harris. Their business? Investing in carbon offsets. There’s also a $500 million Green Growth Fund set up by a Goldmanite to invest in green-tech the list goes on and on. Goldman is ahead of the headlines again, just waiting for someone to make it rain in the right spot.In effect, this bill creates an entirely new commodity that is guaranteed to generate ever-increasing profit for those who have already spent millions preparing to get in on the ground floor. Here’s a hint: that does not include your average mom and pop investor or your dual-income family struggling to make ends meet in a crashing economy. Here’s another hint: it does include financial juggernauts like Goldman Sachs who have been investing in solar, wind, and biofuels for years and now just happen to find themselves in the perfect position to start reaping vast profits from their headstart in the new carbon credit economy (and you thought Paulson was into going green for any other reason than making green?). It also includes Obama, who was instrumental in helping set up the Chicago Climate Exchange for his political cronies like Al Gore, who already has a company which he uses to buy carbon credits from himself and who had made multi-million dollar investments in companies developing carbon tracking software that will be essential to the new carbon-swindle economy. There are still those out there, however, who believe that this time it’s going to be different. This time the government is going to set up a new trillion dollar industry overnight, make sure it is regulated by angels of unquestionable integrity and goodwill, prevent it from being manipulated by big business, and create scores of new green jobs in the renewable energy industry (presumably to replace the hundreds of thousands of jobs that the economy is already hemorrhaging or the hundreds of thousands more that will be shed when these carbon taxes and penalties really ratchet up in the next decade). Well, let’s assume for a moment that we have crossed into just such a fantasy world. It still does not change the fact that the bill itself only offers phony solutions to a problem that doesn’t exist. The phony solution is the Clean Energy part of the Clean Energy and Security Act. What feelgood platitudes about pumping billions of dollars into solar, wind and alternative energy projects obscure is that throwing money hand over fist at inherently flawed technologies will not actually make them work, nor will it make the money-hungry charlatans who promote them any more honest. Just ask Albert Lanier. He’s a freelance journalist who has been writing a series of articles about First Wind, a Massachusetts-based wind developer that is currently being investigated by the New York Attorney General’s office. In a recent interview with The Corbett Report he revealed how the Mafia has been linked to the Italian wind farm industry, which might say more about the industry than it does about the mob.

Of course, the entire idea of cleaning the atmosphere of carbon dioxide seems a bit ridiculous when you realize that by historical levels we are living in a CO2-starved environment, that global surface temperatures are dropping, that global ocean temperatures are dropping, that key proponents of the manmade global warming theory have been caught faking data to support their arguments, that Arctic sea ice is expanding, and that sea levels are not rising. But why let actual science get in the way of a good scare story, especially when that scare story can be used to create a new trillion dollar industry for the banksters? For those who cannot be convinced to consider an issue until it affects them personally, rest assured this draconian new legislation will reach into every American citizen’s living room…literally. As Congressman Steve Scalise has already pointed out, this climate bill contains within it a new national building code that supersedes all existing state codes. If enacted, this legislation will create an entirely new class of federally-funded green brigades with the mandate to perform house-to-house inspections to look for violations of this new green building code. They would even be able to impose civil penalties for code violations (like having the wrong windows or lightbulbs). Watch Congressman Scalise’s comments in the player below:This bill is not only unnecessary, it is dangerous. It is not only economically reckless, it is economically suicidal. It’s passage will be a particularly dark day in American legislative history, something almost unthinkable given the constitution-destroying atrocities passed during the Bush years. There is only one thing left for Americans to do: call their senators and let them know that it’s time to make a decision: vote against the Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 or join the unemployment line come next election.

Major nations should back dollar as key currency: Japan
Fri Jul 3, 2009 10:31am EDT By Yoko Nishikawa

TOKYO (Reuters) - Major countries should support the dollar as the key international currency, although emerging nations may discuss a new global reserve currency on the sidelines of the G8 summit next week, a Japanese official said on Friday.China has asked for debate on a new global reserve currency when leaders from the Group of Eight (G8) meet with the G5 emerging economies next week in Italy, G8 sources told Reuters. News of the Chinese request pushed the dollar down to a three-week low on Wednesday. But Japan thinks it would be difficult for another currency to replace the dollar as the world's reserve currency and it is against any move that would unnecessarily weaken the status of the dollar, said Yoichi Suzuki, director-general of the Japanese foreign ministry's economic affairs bureau.Japan's stance is that major countries should support the dollar, Suzuki, one of the country's main coordinators for the G8 summit, told Reuters in an interview. It won't benefit any country to talk about ideas for a new global key currency, which would weaken the dollar, said Suzuki. An idea, which China's central bank has floated, that the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Right (SDR) could eventually displace the dollar as the principal reserve currency was unrealistic, he added.Japan is interested in a stable dollar for its trade with other countries and because most of its $1 trillion foreign reserves, the world's second largest, are in dollar assets.

Suzuki said he would not be surprised if the G5 discussed the role of the dollar when they meet on the sidelines of the G8 summit in L'Aquila. On Thursday, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister He Yafei said it would be normal if diversification of the currency system were discussed at next week's summit. But Suzuki played down the idea, saying Tokyo does not expect the topic to be discussed at the meeting of G8 plus G5 emerging nations, including China, Brazil and India.

LAND GRAB

Talks at the July 8-10 summit are expected to focus on the state of the world economy, financial regulation, climate change and trade and development.Tokyo will propose establishing principles and citing best practice to promote responsible investment in agriculture to cope with farmland acquisition or land grabs in developing countries, Suzuki said.Agriculture investment in developing countries should not be done because of trying to avoid tough environmental standards in industrial nations,Suzuki said, noting that Japan has been getting support for this initiative from G8 counterparts.By taking the lead on this proposal, Japan the world's largest net food importer also hopes to gain support from developing countries that may have been hurt by irresponsible investment by foreign countries and companies, for Japanese firms' overseas investment in agriculture, he said.On a call by French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the G8 to discuss regulating oil prices to prevent the wild swings of recent years, Suzuki said G8 officials have not been discussing it for the summit's agenda.Realistically, it would be hard to maintain oil prices at certain levels by intervening in the market. Japan thinks the most important thing would be to boost transparency of the market to avoid speculative moves,he said.

An Economy Bigger than Russia, Brazil, Canada, India or Spain Is About to Default George Washington Blog Friday, July 3, 2009

An economy bigger than Russia, Brazil, Canada, India or Spain is in imminent risk of defaulting on its debts.Which nation am I talking about? Not a country . . . but the state of California.California’s GDP was around $1.812 trillion in 2007.According to the International Monetary Fund, that is bigger than the 2008 GDP of every country in the world except the US, Japan, China, Germany, France, UK and Italy.Given that California has more people than any other state in the US, and some of the largest agricultural, manufacturing, high-tech and defense sectors in the nation, you would think that helping California would be important. And yet instead of helping California the federal government is giving aid to Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and the other financial giants who helped to cause the financial crisis, and to Israel and other foreign countries.

Does that make any sense?

Note: Depending on which source is cited (CIA World Factbook, World Bank, or IMF), California ranks somewhere between 7th and 10th in world GDP.Technically, California’s economic measure is not GDP, as that is a national measure. The correct term is Gross State Product.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) Seven banks were shut down by authorities Thursday, pushing the tally of failed banks for 2009 to 52, more than doubling the failures in 2008. Six regional banks in Illinois and one in Texas closed their doors, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The rash of Illinois failures are interlinked: All six banks were controlled by one family and followed a similar business model that created concentrated exposure in each institution, according to the FDIC. The agency said that the six failures stemmed from the banks' investments in collateralized debt obligations and other loan losses. Twelve banks in Illinois have failed this year. Thursday's failure in Texas was the first for the state in 2009.

Last year, 25 banks failed in the United States.

Local banks have been hard hit as plummeting home values devalued mortgage-backed assets and rising unemployment rates caused an increasing number of consumers to default on their loans.Larger financial institutions have been helped with government bailouts, but smaller regional banks continue to struggle.FDIC fund: The total cost of Thursday's bank failures to the FDIC is $314.3 million, bringing the FDIC fund's total cost for failed banks to $12.3 billion this year. That compares with $17.6 billion in all of 2008.The FDIC, which is funded primarily by fees paid by banks, insures individual deposits up to $250,000. The amount was increased from $100,000 late last year in response to concerns about the stability of the nation's banks.

First bank topples: State regulators shuttered John Warner Bank, based in Clinton, Ill., and named the FDIC the receiver. The State Bank of Lincoln, based in Lincoln, Ill., will assume all of the deposits of the failed bank.As of April 30, the failed bank had total assets of $70 million and total deposits of approximately $64 million.

The three offices of John Warner will reopen on Friday as branches of State Bank of Lincoln. Customers of the shuttered bank will automatically become depositors of State Bank of Lincoln. Second bank falls: Later Thursday, state regulators closed First State Bank of Winchester, based in Winchester, Ill., and named the FDIC the receiver. Federal regulators entered into a purchase and assumption agreement for The First National Bank of Beardstown, based in Beardstown, Ill., to assume all of the assets and deposits of the failed bank. As of April 30, The First State Bank of Winchester had total assets of $36 million and total deposits of approximately $34 million. The two offices of the failed bank will reopen Monday as branches of The First National Bank of Beardstown. Customers of the failed bank will automatically be transferred over to the new bank. Over the weekend, customers of the failed bank can access their money by writing checks or using ATM or debit cards. Checks drawn on the bank will continue to be processed. Loan customers should continue to make their payments as usual.Third bank falls: Rock River Bank, based in Oregon, Ill., was shuttered by state regulators. The FDIC was named the receiver and it entered into an agreement with the The Harvard State Bank, of Harvard, Ill., to assume all of the deposits of the failed bank and almost all of the assets. As of April 30, Rock River Bank had total assets of $77 million and total deposits of approximately $75.8 million. The Harvard State Bank agreed to purchase $72.9 million in assets and the FDIC will retain the rest to dispose of later. The four offices of the failed bank will reopen Monday as branches of The Harvard State Bank and depositors will automatically be transferred.Fourth bank goes down: Elizabeth State Bank, based in Elizabeth, Ill., was closed down by state regulators and the FDIC was named the receiver. Galena State Bank and Trust, based in Galena, Ill., entered into a purchase and assumption agreement to take over all of the deposits of the failed bank. As of April 30, The Elizabeth State Bank had total assets of $55.5 million and total deposits of approximately $50.4 million. Galena State Bank and Trust purchased $52.3 million of assets and the FDIC will retain the rest to dispose of later. The two offices of failed bank will reopen on Monday as branches of Galena State Bank and Trust. Customers will automatically be transferred over to the new bank.

Number five: The First National Bank of Danville, headquartered in Danville, Ill., was shuttered by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the FDIC was named the receiver. First Financial Bank, N.A., based in Terre Haute, Ind., entered into a purchase and assumption agreement to take over all of the deposits of the failed bank. As of April 30, the failed bank had total assets of $166 million and total deposits of approximately $147 million. First Financial Bank, N.A. agreed to purchase $148 million of assets, leaving the remainder for the FDIC to dispose of later. The seven offices of failed bank will reopen on Monday as branches of First Financial Bank, N.A. and depositors will automatically be transferred over to the new bank.

Number 6: State regulators shut down the Millennium State Bank of Texas, based in Dallas, Texas, Thursday and named the FDIC the receiver. The FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with an Irving, Texas bank, called the State Bank of Texas. As of June 30, Millennium State Bank of Texas had total assets of approximately $118 million and total deposits of $115 million. State Bank of Texas will take over all of the deposits and essentially all of the failed banks assets, according to the release. The one office of Millennium State Bank of Texas will be open Monday as a branch of State Bank of Texas. Depositors of the failed bank will automatically be transferred over to the new bank. The biggest to fall: State regulators shut down Founders Bank, based in Worth, Ill., and named the FDIC the receiver. The PrivateBank and Trust Company, head-quartered in Chicago, Ill., entered into a purchase and assumption agreement to take over the assets of the failed bank.

As of April 30, Founders Bank had total assets of $962.5 million and total deposits of $848.9 million. The PrivateBank and Trust Company purchased all of the deposits of the failed bank and $888.4 million worth of assets, leaving the rest for the FDIC to dispose of later. The eleven offices of the failed bank will reopen on Monday as branches of The PrivateBank and Trust Company. Customers will automatically be transferred over to the new bank.

Commission approves second slice of Latvian loan
ANDREW WILLIS Today JULY 3,09 @ 09:18 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission announced on Thursday (2 July) its intention to release the second tranche of an EU loan agreed with Latvia last year, while at the same time calling on the small Baltic state to put its public finances in order by 2012.The disbursement of the €1.2 billion sum will come later this month once the commission has had time to raise the funding on international markets, something it can do at a much lower rate than Latvia due to its higher credit standing. The loan is part of a wider €7.5 billion package agreed between Latvia and the EU, the International Monetary Fund and other lenders last December. Latvia is going though a very painful adjustment, but the EU is providing considerable support with a balance of payments loan that is the biggest part of the international financial assistance, said economy commissioner Joaquin Almunia. Last month the Latvian parliament approved government proposals to claw back 500 million lats (€700m) from this year's budget, the third announcement of its kind in 2009.Earlier budget adjustments resulted in a 15 percent reduction in public wages, followed by a further 20 percent reduction. The correction of the large budgetary and macro-economic imbalances will put the country on the road to the euro and to sustainable growth conducive to employment creation, said Mr Almunia. Aspirations of joining the euro area have stopped a number of countries in the region from devaluing their currencies, a measure occasionally used to boost exports by making prices more competitive.

2012 deadline

On Thursday the commission also made recommendations under the excessive deficit procedure to the council [representing member states] regarding Latvia. The recommendations call on Latvia to bring its budget deficit below 3 percent by 2012, a timetable that the commission said was consistent with the country's economic and budgetary adjustments and plans for joining the euro.EU guidelines on member state finances that limit government deficits to 3 percent of their GDP known as the Stability and Growth Pact have come in for a hammering over the last year due to stimulus spending and falling tax receipts across the union. However, excessive expenditure by Latvian governments during the recent boom years and the high level of private sector debts in foreign currency have made the small Baltic state particularly vulnerable to a global downturn and leave it will little room for manoeuvre at present.

Gloomy job figures dash hopes for European upturn
LUCIA KUBOSOVA Today JULY 3,09 @ 09:27 CET

As fresh statistics in both Europe and the US dash hopes for an early economic recovery, Brussels is proposing micro loans to small firms in a bid to help them keep local jobs.According to data published by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, on Thursday (2 July), the jobless rate in the eurozone was 9.5 percent in May, up from 9.3 percent in April. It is the highest rate since May 1999 and it involves around 15 million men and women.Meanwhile, the unemployment rate across the bloc was 8.9 percent in May, a four year high. The number of jobless persons increased by 385,000 compared to the previous month and by 5.1 million since May 2008. Altogether, it is expected that some 3.5 million jobs will be lost this year across the EU. Spain continues to feature as the member state with the highest unemployment rate, while the Netherlands recorded the lowest rates (3.2%) and, along with Germany, the lowest surge of the number of unemployed compared to last year. While all the EU countries recorded some increases, the three Baltic states saw the biggest jump in jobless figures, with Estonia's unemployment rate surging from around 4 to 15.6 percent, Latvia's from 6 percent to 16.3 percent and Lithuania's from 5 percent to 14.3 percent. A similar set of gloomy statistics came from the US on Wednesday, as June figures showed that the unemployment rate in the world's biggest economy rose from 9.4percent to 9.5 percent, its highest for nearly 26 years, the Financial Times reported.

US president Barack Obama admitted the job figures are sobering but insisted that his stimulus programme is working. As I've said from the moment that I walked into the door of this White House, it took years for us to get into this mess, and it will take us more than a few months to turn it around," the US leader said, according to the Washington Examiner.Economists argue that the latest signals from the labour market on both sides of the Atlantic cast a shadow over optimistic expectations for the world's worst economic recession since the 1930s to be nearing its final phase.

Giving out loans before leaving the office

Meanwhile, the outgoing European Commission, the EU's executive, has proposed a fresh initiative aiming to help preserve employment, suggesting micro loans for small firms as well as for Europeans who have lost their jobs and want to start their own business.Pointing out that the financial crisis has dried up credit to entrepreneurs, the commission suggested on Thursday (2 July) an initial sum of €100 million to be provided to people willing to set up their own firm.In the current recession, we want to offer a new start to the unemployed through easier access to credit to set up or develop new businesses. And we want to help small businesses to develop further despite the crisis, said the employment commissioner Vladimir Spidla. This will help create new jobs,he added. If leveraged to €500 million in co-operation with international financial institutions such as the European Investment Bank as expected by Brussels, the initiative could result in 45,000 loans over a period of up to eight years.Under the proposed scheme, loans under €25,000 would be offered to micro-enterprises, employing fewer than 10 people which is the prevailing type of business in Europe, covering over 90 percent of all firms, as well as to unemployed or inactive persons planning to go into self-employment.The EU executive is hoping the programme will start running in 2010.

World markets slide on grim US jobs report By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ, AP Business Writer – Fri Jul 3, 4:58 am ET

HONG KONG – Most Asian markets fell Friday as a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report signaled more pain ahead for the world's largest economy. European stocks also weakened in early trade.Losses across Asia were somewhat tame compared to Wall Street, where markets pulled sharply lower. Oil prices slipped further after tumbling overnight, while the dollar was flat against the yen.Optimism about the U.S. economy, a critical market for Asian-made goods, buckled after the government said employers slashed 467,000 jobs in June. That was far worse than the 363,000 that economists predicted and marked the first increase in monthly jobs losses since January. At the same time, the unemployment rate hit 9.5 percent, the highest since 1983.Investors have sent markets surging in recent months after the global economy flickered to life as companies began restocking their inventories and international trade picked up modestly. But the dreary news about America's labor market just reinforced worries that a strong recovery in the U.S. economy, even if the recession officially ends this year, was unlikely anytime soon. The fundamentals of the economy are still not sound, said Arjuna Mahendran, head of Asian investment strategy at HSBC Private Bank in Singapore. You're going to see less and less of these green shoots.Mahendran said equity markets could fall between 15 percent and 20 percent in the coming months.

Early going in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 edged down 0.1 percent, while the major benchmarks in Germany and France declined 0.4 percent. Wall Street futures weakened slightly.Asian markets, after starting in the red, managed to trim some of their losses.Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average dropped 60.08, or 0.6 percent, to 9,816.07, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed up 25.35 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,203.40 after trading in the red most of the day.Australia's benchmark fell 1.4 percent, and Singapore's main index finished down 1 percent.China's Shanghai Composite index was largely flat. In Korea, the Kospi rebounded to close up 0.6 percent.India's Sensex gained 0.8 percent in afternoon trading after the government said Thursday the economy could grow by as much as 7.5 percent this year if the U.S. recession bottoms out by September.Despite recent losses, global markets just wrapped up one of their strongest quarters in years. India, China and other emerging markets were among the best performers as investors' appetite for growth and riskier assets returned. For the second quarter, global investors channeled a whopping $26.5 billion into funds that focus on equities in developing markets, according to a survey by EPFR Global, a Boston-based firm that tracks global fund flow data. That eclipsed the previous record for a single quarter, the $22.4 billion such funds attracted in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials lost 223.32, or 2.6 percent, to 8,280.74, the lowest close since May 22. It was the average's worst day since April 20. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 26.91, or 2.9 percent, to 896.42 and the Nasdaq composite index fell 49.20, or 2.7 percent, to 1,796.52.U.S. markets will be closed Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday.Oil prices rose in light holiday trading volume after tumbling the day before as disappointing job numbers in the U.S. and Europe raised concerns about demand. Benchmark crude for August delivery fell 46 cents to $66.27 a barrel. In currencies, the dollar was flat at 95.92 yen. The euro rose moderately to $1.3996 from $1.3951 late Thursday in New York.

GM awaits judge's ruling on sale plan By BREE FOWLER, AP Auto Writer JULY 3,09

NEW YORK – General Motors Corp. may have to wait out the long holiday weekend to learn if its bankruptcy plan is moving forward, after U.S. Judge Robert Gerber adjourned a three-day hearing without indicating when he will rule on GM's plan to sell its good assets to a new company.Gerber asked GM's attorneys to submit a proposed order that would be entered if the sale were to be approved. They said they would do so by Friday night or Saturday, July 4th. Gerber is expected to rule some time after that.A lawyer for GM warned the court that the only alternative to GM's plan would be a liquidation of the company's assets that would have horrific consequences for everyone involved.Attorney Harvey Miller said the government is committed to cutting off funding to GM if the sale is not approved by July 10. That followed testimony Wednesday from a member of President Barack Obama's automotive task force who indicated the government has no plans to continue funding GM past next Friday if the sale is not approved by then. Some parties objecting to the sale argued in court that the Obama administration won't allow GM to fail.Essentially the objectors are asking you to play Russian roulette,Miller told Gerber, adding that ignoring the deadline puts the futures of GM's employees, retirees, and creditors all at risk.GM's government-backed plan for a quick exit from Chapter 11 protection hinges on the sale of most of its assets to a new entity, allowing the automaker to leave behind many of the costs and liabilities that have made it unprofitable. The Detroit car maker's June 1 filing for bankruptcy protection was the fourth-largest in U.S. history.Harry Wilson, the task force member that testified on Wednesday, said a quick sale is needed, because the government cannot keep sinking billions in tax dollars into the company for an open-ended period of time with no guarantee of success. But on Thursday, Michael Richman, an attorney for a trio of bondholders opposed to GM's plan, told Gerber to call the government's bluff and require GM to restructure itself under Chapter 11 instead of approving the quick sale of its assets. This would allow the bondholders to negotiate for more in exchange for the debt they hold, he said.

Richman said that while the company may be powerless to fight the government's demands, the court can push back to protect the interests of all the company's stakeholders. The trio of bondholders Richman represents hold just a fraction of GM's unsecured debt. One of the members bought his bonds for just 2 cents on the dollar, while the other two spent no more than 20 cents on the dollar for theirs.Miller contended that with the government unwilling to provide funding for a restructuring and no other lenders out there to take their place, the sale plan is GM's only option for survival. He also said an extended stay under court protection hurts GM's ability to attract and keep customers. Richman countered that GM's sales for June, though down about 30 percent, were slightly better than the company expected.Hundreds of parties, including bondholders, unions, state officials, consumer groups and individuals, have filed objections to the sale, threatening to hold up the process.

Last month, numerous objections also dragged out rival Chrysler LLC's sale hearing for three days before it was approved by the bankruptcy judge in that case. A group of the automaker's bondholders and consumer groups also appealed the sale all the way to the Supreme Court before it ultimately went through and the automaker emerged from court oversight as a new company. As part of the sale plan reached with the auto task force, the U.S. government will get a 60 percent stake in the new GM in exchange for what's expected to eventually total nearly $50 billion in aid.The Canadian government, which has also contributed billions in aid, will get a 12.5 percent stake while the United Auto Workers union will take a 17.5 percent share to fund its health care obligations. Unsecured bondholders receive the remaining 10 percent.Existing GM shareholders are expected to be wiped out.The remaining pieces of the company, including some closed plants, will become the Old GM and will be liquidated.GM hopes to emerge as a leaner company, less burdened by debt and labor costs as it faces a severe recession that has sapped car and truck sales. Automakers have continued to see sales tumble in the first half of this year.

Oil hovers above $66 in Asia after weak jobs data By ALEX KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 3, 4:35 am ET

SINGAPORE – Oil prices hovered above $66 a barrel Friday in Asia in light holiday trading a day after grim unemployment numbers from the U.S. and Europe sent crude prices tumbling.Benchmark crude for August delivery slipped 30 cents to $66.46 a barrel by late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, it fell $2.58, nearly 4 percent, to settle at $66.73.Trading in the U.S. is closed Friday for the Independence Day holiday.Oil came off an eight-month intraday high of $73.38 a barrel earlier this week on growing investor concerns that a doubling of the crude price since March isn't justified by a sluggish global economy.Weak jobs figures released Thursday suggested consumption will remain tepid and crude demand may not pick up quickly.A Labor Department report showed the U.S. economy lost a larger-than-expected 467,000 jobs in June. The unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent, a 26-year high.Unemployment in the 16 countries that use the euro spiked to a ten-year high in May, also at 9.5 percent. The dismal economic data undermined investor confidence and sent the Dow Jones industrial average down 2.6 percent Thursday. Most Asian stock indexes also opened lower Friday. In other Nymex trading, gasoline for August delivery was steady at $1.78 a gallon and heating oil held at $1.70. Natural gas for August delivery rose 5.6 cents to $3.67 per 1,000 cubic feet.In London, Brent prices slid 30 cents to $66.33 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Analysis: Russia plays checkbook diplomacy By CATRINA STEWART, Associated Press Writer JULY 3,09

MOSCOW – Russia is using its energy wealth to shore up influence abroad, pouring billions of dollars in loans and grants into former Soviet states and long-standing allies even as it faces its own severe economic downturn.Faced with its own economic crisis, the Kremlin could have downplayed its drive to reclaim its former status as a great power and fight fires at home.Instead, armed with cash hoarded during years of high oil prices, Russia has gone on a cash offensive pledging loans and aid to Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Armenia. It has tied in its neighbors to crucial energy deals, and has talked about lending billions of dollars to Ukraine and Serbia.

Russia has sought to hold protective sway over what it calls its near abroad, a region that includes most of Moscow's former imperial possessions. It has railed against its neighbors' efforts to move closer to Europe, and resisted Western influence on what it regards as its home turf. But Russia will have to step up its game if it is to build sustainable influence in the former Soviet Union. Presented with choices, its neighbors are starting to resist Russia's dominant position, playing Moscow off against other powers to secure their own long-term interests.

Turkmenistan, the reclusive Central Asian state with enormous gas reserves, was until recently in Moscow's thrall. The Russians swept in last year, buying up Turkmen gas in lucrative long-term contracts. With that gas bound for Europe, Russia's Gazprom stood to lock in profits and strengthen its hold over European gas supply. But the global crisis has hit demand for gas, and Gazprom attempted to renege on its contracts much to Ashgabat's irritation. Turkmenistan accused Gazprom of blowing up the gas pipeline between the two countries a charge that Gazprom denied prompting an outage in exports and a deepening rift in relations. With Russia's relationship with Turkmenistan looking fragile, neighboring China swooped in last month with a $4 billion credit, and agreed to purchase production expected from a new gas field. With Russian President Dmitry Medvedev invited to visit Turkmenistan in September, the Turkmens seem ready to talk. But as China and the West actively court the gas-rich country, Russia may find it is already too late.Russia is increasingly facing up to China in the areas it regards as its near abroad, said Chris Weafer, chief strategist at Uralsib. Russia has been accused of falling short on promises, while China is very diligent in its delivery.Russia needs to step up its response.Belarus, too, has attempted to play Russia off other powers in this case Europe. Talks with Minsk to extend the final $500 million tranche of a $2 billion loan collapsed in acrimony recently.Belarus' authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, accused Moscow publicly of insisting on dubious political preconditions namely recognizing the independence claims of Georgia's breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Only Russia and Nicaragua recognize those claims. In response to Lukashenko's charge, Russia's normally cool Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin accused Belarus of having a parasitic attitude toward Moscow. Lukashenko shot back that he would not bow down, whine and cry to Russia.Lukashenko may feel he has little choice but to mend relations with an annoyed Kremlin. Belarus, despite recently joining the European Union's six-nation Eastern Partnership, still has limited ties with the West. Instead, it remains heavily dependent on Russia for cheap loans, inexpensive energy and vital trade ties.

Nevertheless, the Kremlin has good reason to whip out its checkbook elsewhere.

The government of Uzbekistan, normally highly critical of U.S. policy, surprised observers by praising U.S. President Barack Obama's recent address to the Islamic world in Cairo. A Foreign Ministry statement described Obama's approach to key issues as sober and realistic.Kyrgyzstan recently backpedaled on a decision to kick the Americans out entirely from a vital military base, a staging post for sending supplies to Afghanistan. The move drew anger in Moscow, which had loaned the impoverished country some $2 billion seemingly on the condition that it give the Americans notice.Russia always makes the same mistake, said Alexander Konovalov, president of the Institute of Strategic Assessment. It presents its neighbors with a choice: you're either with the West or with us.Some neighbors have achieved a balance. Kazakhstan has successfully played off Russia, China and the West to little detriment to its relationships. And do may Kyrgyzstan. In the wake of Bishkek's overtures to the U.S. in June, Medvedev sought to assure the world that Russia had no objection. In this multipolar world, countries that are not great powers have choices, said Sam Greene, deputy director at the Carnegie Moscow Center. They are going to diversify their relationships. I think Russia realizes that. But the Kremlin's actions so far, he said, have been more about maintaining some remnants of the past rather than building something for the future. Analysts warn it is a short-sighted strategy that could yet backfire. Once you start building relationships based on financial aid, you have to keep that flow of aid coming, said Weafer. If some day you can't afford to write the check, somebody else will.Catrina Stewart covers Russian business and economics for The Associated Press.

Iranian cleric: British Embassy staff to be tried By LEE KEATH, Associated Press Writer - JULY 3,09

EDITOR'S NOTE: Iranian authorities have barred journalists for international news organizations from reporting on the streets and ordered them to stay in their offices. This report is based on the accounts of witnesses reached in Iran and official statements carried on Iranian media.

A top Iranian cleric said Friday that some of the detained Iranian staffers of the British Embassy in Tehran will be put on trial, and he accused Britain of a role in instigating widespread protests that erupted over the country's disputed presidential election. The announcement by Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati came a day after the European Union demanded Iran release the staffers, who were detained on June 27. Britain is pressing EU countries to pull their ambassadors out of Tehran in protest.Jannati, a powerful hard-liner who is close to Iran's supreme leader, told worshippers during a Friday prayer sermon in Tehran that the detained staffers made confessions. In these events, their embassy had a presence,he said, referring to the post-election turmoil. Some people were arrested. Well, inevitably, they will be put on trial. He did not say how many staffers will be tried or on what charges. Earlier Iranian officials said all but one of the nine embassy personnel originally arrested had been released, but European Union officials said they believed more than one was still being held.

In London, a Foreign Office spokeswoman said of Jannati's comments that British officials are very concerned about these reports and are investigating. In Sweden, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said it's not acceptable to file charges against the ones released or the ones still in custody, though he added that the report had not yet been confirmed.Jannati does not hold a position in the government or judiciary, but is the head of the Guardian Council, a powerful body in Iran's ruling clerical hierarchy that stands above the elected government. He is also close to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.Jannati told the thousands of worshippers that the British had designed a velvet revolution ... In March, they said (in their Foreign Ministry) that street riots were possible during June elections. These are signs ... revealed by themselves. He also said those involved in protests need to repent and ask God to forgive them.Protests erupted in Tehran and other cities after official results showed a landslide victory for incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12 presidential election over his pro-reform rival Mir Hossein Mousavi. The pro-reform camp said the results were fraudulent. The protests were quashed in a tough crackdown, and Iran's police chief has said 20 rioters were killed during the unrest. During his sermon, Jannati said seven or eight members of the paramilitary Basij militia were also killed. Basijis took a leading role in putting down the protests, often clashing with demonstrators.

Iran's ruling clerics have called the elections pure and healthy following Khamenei's declaration that the results would stand.Still, Mousavi appears driven to maintain his opposition and even to raise the stakes though there have been no protests since Sunday. In a challenging statement on Wednesday, he said he considered the government illegitimate and demanded political prisoners be released.Jannati took a tough line, indirectly accusing Mousavi of treason.Though he did not name Mousavi directly, Jannati pointed out that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leader of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, once said that anyone disrupts unity has not only committed a sin but also has committed treason against the Islamic Republic and the system.Jannati demanded that those involved in the protests repent and ask God to forgive them.Keath reported from Cairo. Associated Press correspondent Ali Akbar Dareini in Tehran, Iran, contributed to this report.(This version CORRECTS that nine embassy staffers were orginally detained.)

Palestinians detain rivals to strengthen grip By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 3, 3:14 am ET

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' security forces have significantly widened a crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank in the past month. They have doubled the number of detainees and are increasingly targeting the wives of activists, school teachers and others on the fringes of the Islamic militant group, Hamas officials say.In the same period, police in Hamas-ruled Gaza have picked up dozens of Abbas loyalists, said officials in Abbas' Fatah movement. The bitter rivals accuse each other of using the sweeps for political leverage, as they try to negotiate an elusive power-sharing deal and the terms of general elections in January. A Palestinian unity government is seen as crucial to U.S. efforts to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, since Israel says it can't make concessions to the divided Palestinians.Tit-for-tat detentions have been carried out over the two years since Hamas overran Gaza, ousting the forces loyal to Abbas, who was left with just the West Bank. Since then, each side has being trying to assert more control and wipe out the rival's power base, amid persistent allegations of mistreatment of detainees.

Since June 2007, Abbas' security forces fearful of a Hamas takeover in the West Bank detained hundreds of Hamas activists, closed Hamas-run charities and dried up the group's funding.Hamas legislator Mahmoud Ramahi said this week that there has been a sharp spike in detentions, from 460 in custody at the end of May to a total of 887 behind bars a month later, a new record.June was a crazy month for detention,Ramahi said. It's clear that they (Fatah activists) want to put political pressure on the movement by forcing it to accept Fatah's conditions for reconciliation and to control the movement's activities.Several Abbas aides dismissed the Hamas allegations of political arrests. They claimed this week that the militants were involved in plots to attack Palestinian security compounds and government officials in the West Bank, but provided no evidence.A Hamas list of names of detainees given to The Associated Press showed that among them were several university professors and mosque leaders, seven municipal council members, school teachers and at least five journalists for Hamas-affiliated media outlets.Fifty have been held for nine months or more and only six have been put on trial, where all were convicted of weapons possession, Ramahi said.Dr. Farid Abu Dheir, a journalism teacher at Al Najah University in the West Bank city of Nablus, said he was held for five days in June, and asked whether a press office he runs receives Hamas funding. He said investigators showed him confessions of activists they said detailed the structure of Hamas institutions and funding. In the town of Tulkarem, 17-year-old high school student Sameh Qarout was taken from his home by Palestinian military intelligence on June 24 and grilled for three days about his friends, said his father, Sadiq, adding that the boy had just left the hospital after having his appendix removed when he was detained.

The detainees also included a 68-year-old doctor known for involvement with Islamic charities, two Nablus businessmen and five women, two of whose husbands are also detained.A high ranking Palestinian security official said Hamas members are often released after they hand over money, weapons and information. The arrests seek to strip Hamas of its weapons and financial nets, to keep the movement powerless and unable to repeat its military coup in the West Bank,he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.Abbas and his security chiefs insist that only those suspected of security offenses are detained.West Bank police spokesman Adnan Damiri said the Palestinian Authority has about 400 detainees, some of them held for hours or days. Not all are put on trial, he said. Most of the arrests stem from three charges, he said: weapons possession, money laundering and incitement against the Palestinian Authority. One of the arrested women and her husband were caught hiding 1 million euros for Hamas. Another female detainee is suspected of hiding fugitives and a third threw a hand grenade during clashes between Hamas militants and Palestinian security forces, he said.In Gaza, Hamas-controlled security forces have systematically gone after political rivals, mainly those from Fatah. This week, coinciding with the latest round of reconciliation talks in Cairo, more than 100 Abbas loyalists were picked up in Gaza, bringing the number of detainees to more than 300, said Fahmi Zaghrir, a Fatah spokesman. He said several dozens have been held for months. The Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights said some of those summoned for questioning were told to wait for hours in the hot sun without water or food. The group said most were released after interrogation.

Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman Ehab Ghussein said several dozen were in detention on security-related charges, but denied any were political prisoners. Researcher Salah Mousa from the West Bank-based Independent Commission for Human Rights said both sides have carried out political arrests. Hamas is trying to wipe out Fatah in Gaza and Fatah is trying to wipe out Hamas in the West Bank,he said. Associated Press writers Ben Hubbard and Dalia Nammari contributed to this report from Ramallah.

Russia to allow US weapon shipments to Afghanistan JULY 3,09

MOSCOW – A Kremlin aide says Russia will allow the U.S. to ship weapons across its territory to Afghanistan.President Dmitry Medvedev's foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko said Medvedev and President Barack Obama are expected to sign a deal on the issue during their summit next week in Moscow.Russia has been allowing the U.S. to ship non-lethal goods across its territory to help operations in Afghanistan. Prikhodko said the expected deal would enable the U.S. to ship lethal cargoes and would include shipments by air and land.It is a significant goodwill gesture from the Kremlin before the summit, which both nations hope will put long-troubled ties back on track.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

MOSCOW (AP) — President Barack Obama was wrong to suggest Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin remains partially mired in a Cold War mindset and is sure to change his opinion when they meet next week in Moscow, Putin's spokesman said Friday.Obama said in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press that Putin needs to understand that the old Cold War approaches to U.S.Russian relations is outdated, that it's time to move forward in a different direction.Obama said he believes Russian President Dmitry Medvedev understands that, but Putin has one foot in the old ways of doing business and one foot in the new.Obama makes his first trip as U.S. president to Russia for talks on Monday and Tuesday. His remarks suggested that he sees Putin as a potential obstacle to improving ties after years of increasing acrimony. Putin was a frequent critic of the U.S. during his eight years as Russia's president, before he became prime minister last year.Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Obama was wrong about the premier. Such a point of view has nothing to do with a true understanding of Putin,he told AP, and suggested the reason for Obama's view was simply that he has not yet spoken with Putin they are not acquainted.By all appearances he does not have full information about (Putin's) views, Peskov said, adding that Obama's planned breakfast meeting with Putin on Tuesday should clear the air.I am convinced that after this meeting, the president (Obama) will change his point of view about (Putin),he said.

Putin is still widely seen as more powerful than Medvedev, who was elected in March 2008 after Putin tapped him as his favored successor. Medvedev has used a softer tone than Putin and has spoken of the need to improve Russia's democracy and its justice system, raising U.S. hopes for a shift from the tight Kremlin control of the Putin era.In the AP interview, Obama said Putin still has a lot of sway in Russia, and that meeting with him as well as with the president ensures that he and Medvedev are hearing the same things and seeing the same things so that they can move in concert in cooperating with us on some critical issues.

African leaders agree to Libya-led AU changes By ALFRED de MONTESQUIOU, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 3, 12:41 am ET

SIRTE, Libya – Concluding marathon talks held late into the night, African leaders agreed Friday to a Libyan-driven push to transform the African Union and in theory greatly extend its powers. The change was materialized by morphing the African Union's executive body, the commission, into an African Authority. The draft document adopted at 4 a.m. at the AU summit of heads of states in Sirte, Libya, showed that the new Authority would simplify the AU's structure and boost its power over defense, diplomatic and international trade matters. The document, obtained by The Associated Press, was viewed as a milestone for the buildup to what Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has long envisioned as a federal government overseeing a United States of Africa. The final text reflects everybody's position, said Benin's Foreign Minister Jean-Marie Ehouzou, the only head of state or country delegate to address journalists as the weary-eyed and tightlipped officials trickled out of the conference room after over 15 hours of near-uninterrupted talks. The Authority would have to resolve doubts voiced by many African leaders about unifying Africa under one government, including concerns about national sovereignty, division of resources and power. Most African leaders voice support for more unity, but some of the continent's wealthier nations, led by Nigeria and South Africa, had appeared to be resisting the move. African diplomats say there are worries the new structure could become overbearing, especially if it is led by Gadhafi, who has a long history of intervening throughout Africa.Ehouzou conceded the final declaration had provoked quite a few sharp discussions, but I believe the states eventually managed to reach common ground nonetheless. The draft shows the new Authority will coordinate the implementation of a common defense policy as well as the common position of AU member states during international negotiations. The Authority is also due to hold the strategic command of an African force in waiting.I believe (African) states are ready to drop a little bit of their sovereignty in favor of the authority,Ehouzou said.In practice, however, the wording of the Authority's new role remained very vague. Ehouzou also confirmed that the changes would have to be first written into the AU's constitution before being ratified by the parliament of each of the AU's 53 member states. The declaration showed that finances related to the change were also to be studied at a later, unspecified date.

South Korea: North Korea may fire more missiles By KWANG-TAE KIM, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 3, 6:12 am ET

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea shrugged off North Korea's firing of short-range missiles saying Friday they were part of routine military exercises and warning more launches are likely in coming days.Whether the communist country will fire a long-range missile toward Hawaii remained unclear, though U.S. defense officials said such a launch did not appear imminent. The North fired four short-range missiles off its east coast Thursday, just ahead of the U.S. Independence Day holiday that falls this weekend. The U.S. and Japan called the North's move provocative. But Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said South Korea did not attach much significance to the missile launches, calling them part of a routine military exercise. The short-range missiles are not seen as a threat by South Korea and the U.S., which have far more sophisticated weapons. South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing an unidentified military official, reported that all four missiles flew about 60 miles (100 kilometers). The launches, however, have highlighted concerns over North Korea's broader missile intentions, especially after the country warned ships to stay away from waters off its eastern coast until July 10.Speculation has centered on whether the North may try to fire a long-range missile toward Hawaii during the period. In April, North Korea threatened to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile. Such a move would be seen as another challenge to the United States, which has been rallying international support for enforcement of U.N. sanctions imposed against Pyongyang following its May 25 nuclear test.

Earlier Friday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was closely monitoring North Korean military sites because the communist nation may fire more missiles in coming days.Several U.S. Defense Department officials, however, said there was nothing to indicate that North Korea is ready to launch a long-range ballistic missile and there appears to be no immediate threat to the United States.Missile defenses were strengthened following a mid-June report in a Japanese newspaper that the North might fire a long-range missile toward Hawaii in early July. While Americans were celebrating Independence Day in 2006, North Korea also fired a barrage of missiles, including a long-range Taepodong-2 that broke apart and fell into the ocean.

Separately, a North Korean ship that had changed course after being shadowed for more than a week by the U.S. Navy passed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday and was heading toward North Korea, South Korean news channel YTN reported, citing an unidentified diplomatic source. The Kang Nam 1 originally believed to be bound for Myanmar, possibly with illicit weapons on board turned around at Myanmar's request and the Southeast Asian country appeared to have offered compensation to the North, YTN said.A U.N. resolution passed after North Korea's May 25 nuclear test seeks to clamp down on the country's trading of banned arms and weapons-related material by requiring U.N. member states to request inspections of ships suspected of carrying prohibited cargo.North Korea has said it would consider any interception of its ships a declaration of war.

Japanese imperial army maps to go online JULY 3,09

TOKYO (AFP) – Old Asia-Pacific maps from Japanese Imperial Army archives are going online for modern use, such as studying changes in forest cover or the growth of cities, a Japanese researcher said Friday. Some of the maps date back to the 1880s, offering detailed topographical glimpses of the region when foreign occupations and colonialization were common, said Shigeru Kobayashi, professor at Osaka University.

We talk about the deforestation of Southeast Asia,he said, with old maps showing which areas have been affected. The maps could also show how cities have changed between then and now. It's quite educational.Kobayashi is part of a team, led by scholars from several Japanese universities, that is putting the maps on the Internet.

We view this as a shared asset of significant educational value for all mankind,he said.Until the end of World War II, the Japanese military created, copied and stole maps of the vast region stretching from Alaska to Australia, and from the Korean peninsula to Pakistan.Certain regions, including China, the Korean peninsula, Sakhalin and Taiwan which Japan occupied or colonized until the end of the war were mapped more frequently than others. The military nature of the maps, some of which were created in secret, required researchers to be sensitive today, Kobayashi said.

The project has drawn some criticism online from residents of countries that fell victim to Japanese military aggression in the past, he added. We are aware of the moral responsibility. Our intention is to enhance friendly international exchange,he said. The growing online map collection can be viewed at a Japanese-language Internet archive hosted by Tohoku University at http://dbs.library.tohoku.ac.jp/gaihozu/.
