WELL LAURIE I WILL GLADLY ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.OBAMA IS DEFINATELY NO CHRISTIAN.HE SAYS AMERICA IS NOT A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY,HE SYMPITHISES MUSLIMS AT EVERY STEP EVEN BOWING TO THE SAUDI PRINCE.JESUS SAYS BY THEIR FRUITS YOU WILL KNOW THEM.OBAMA HAS THE FRUITS OF ISLAM SYMPATHISERS AND JESUS HATERS.HOW CAN YOU CLAIM YOUR A CHRISTIAN AND DENY JESUS OUR KING AND SAVIOUR AND HATE ISRAEL.IN FACT OBAMA AND HIS SHEEPAL FOLLOWERS OF LEFT WING(FAR OUT LEFT AND LIBERAL,DEMOCRATS)(THAT IS)ARE SO OUT TO LUNCH THEY ALLOW SODOMITE RAINBOW GROUPS EQUAL RIGHTS TO GODS WORDS OF A MAN AND WOMAN ONLY IS A TRUE FAMILY.AND NOT ONLY THAT THE FAROUT SHEEPALS AND THEIR LIER LEADER OBAMA WANT THE LEGEL MURDER OF GODS INNOCENT UNBORN CHILDREN.SO IF OBAMA IS A CHRISTIAN I GOT A SWAMP FOR $20 TRILLION OF THE OFFSHORE BANKERS MONEY WHAT OBAMA IS ROBBING AMERICANS OF.AND WHO CAN TRUST A PERSON THATS 87% ARAB AND 12% BLACK,THATS GOT ISLAM (PIGS BLOOD) STINK ALL OVER IT.AND ONE LAST POINT HE CLAIMS HIMSELF A PERSON OF THE WORLD,JESUS SAYS:YOU MUST LIVE IN THE WORLD BUT BE NOT OF THE WORLD.THAT MEANS SKIP THE LUSTS OF SEX OUTIDE OF MARRIAGE,BOOZE,DRUGS,LUST FOR POWER AND WEALTH.I WOULD SAY OBAMA IS OF THE WORLD AND NOT OF GOD,JUST MY THOUGHTS.

Hmmmm, do you think yet that Obama might not be what he says he is? By laurie Roth

I am a Christian, never a Muslim. It’s incredible to me as I revisit the emotional and spiritual seduction so many millions had when Obama was running for office. So many were sick of globalist Bush, the Iraq war and Republicans in general. We found ourselves with a handsome, young, rock star black guy who was vividly democrat and liberal competing against the usual Rhino type conservative who was older and was proud of being a compromiser and frankly a globalist, McCain. I had a little hope when they brought in Sarah Palin, a real woman, wife, mom and servant to the people of Alaska who could speak. However, they quickly and stupidly pulled her back and like McCain they tried to moderate her. Bad and fatal move to the campaign interviews and debates! Like so many others in conservative talk radio and journals,I studied Obama’s voting record and associations pitting them against his articulate and entertaining speeches staring at the prompters.I was stunned that so many, though obviously sick of the Iraq struggle and mad at Bush would think that this empty shirt, Obama could actually bring the change America needed! NO,I won’t call him an empty shirt because he has nasty things in all his pockets.Empty at least reflects ignorance that would be bad but more understandable.

Just the facts please

Is Obama the sincere Christian so many believe he is?

He told the G 20 folks in his last big overseas series of meetings that WE WE’RE NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION.He gladly bowed low to the King of Saudi Arabia, something a U.S. President has never done.He broke a long-standing tradition when the White House demanded that the symbol of Jesus Christ be covered up before his speech at Georgetown University on April 24th. This was unprecedented by and American President. Most recently, former President Bush and Laura Bush spoke at the same podium and never asked for the symbol of Jesus Christ to be covered up. Obviously, someone has a little issue with Jesus……….hmm.Now we have him refusing to even attend the National Day of Prayer gathering on May 11th, 2009.

What is President Obama’s goal in leadership?

Obama wants and plans for the U.S. to submit to international leadership and the UN.

It doesn’t take a great IQ to see the over reach of Obama and this administration trying to force our country into submission with the International community and UN. He is supportive and so are many liberal members of this congress, of the U.N. Rights of the Child (UNCRC).It sounds at first glimpse innocent until you study what they want to do. It would render the rights of all parents to raise their children, impotent. There could be no more love pats, or swats, don’t be thinking about forcing little Suzie to church. If she was distressed about going to church one Sunday and told a school counselor it would be a violation of the rights of your child to make her go. Foster care and authorities might just show up at your door. Don’t mess with the rights of your child with the Internet either….. on and on. For that matter, with Barney Frank’s Hate Crimes bill, protecting pedophiles and over 500 different sexual absurdities, crimes and much deviance, don’t be thinking you can bonk a pedophile over the head if he is attacking your young daughter. You could be committing a felony and hate crime and he could be committing a misdemeanor.Isn’t that precious? We have also seen Obama and his administration pushing FOCA, the freedom of Choice Act which would force all Doctors, hospitals, Christian/Catholic or not and all states (even if laws were on the books against abortion) to give abortions on demand.Maybe that is why one of the many things listed in the Homeland Security Report, the day before the April 15th Tea Parties as a potential domestic terror danger were people who believed in state and federal sovereignty. We have seen Obama and his administration recently pressuring and allegedly threatening many lenders who didn’t want to sell Chrysler. They were threatened with ruination if they didn’t cooperate and sell.GM will even be more complicated and horrific as they fall apart and the Government swoops in to control them.We have already heard of and I have spoken and written about in previous articles, the many banks who did not want the bail out money. They were all pressured to take at least 5 billion each or none would get it.I talked directly with two high up banking contacts that were straight up and verified that. Then when the banks tried to pay it back as soon as possible congress would not take the funds back.

The only thing you can figure with this ridiculous scenario is that Obama and this administration want total control of the banking industry, auto industry,if he has his way, parental rights. The control attempts and plans continue on.We will see a strong push for forced gun registration and manipulated environmental controls and taxation. You know, the huge worldwide, global warming melt down that doesn’t really exist?

What can one assume from the first 100 days in this administration?

Obama is NOT a Christian.

Obama is NOT a Capitalist but a totally dedicated socialist/Marxist.

Obama is in love with being popular to the world but hates the US and its sovereignty.

Obama has little or no loyalty at all to our best allie in the Middle East, Israel.

Obama believes in big Government control in all areas of our lives.

This is not my vision for America; I hope to God it isn’t yours.Organize and plan LARGER Tea Parties July 4th. Work very hard to find and back REAL leaders to run in each of your states and get behind them in an assertive way.Let’s regain the House in the mid term elections and work on getting back the Senate. Finally, let’s vote this nightmare out of office after 4 years and start to repair the damage!

House Bill Aims to Strip Rightwing Extremists of Second Amendment Right
Kurt Nimmo Infowars May 9, 2009

A sinister bill working its way through the House may eventually serve as a companion piece to the Department of Homeland Security’s Rightwing Extremist report that labels veterans and advocates of the Second Amendment as dangerous terrorists — H.R. 2159, The Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009, sponsored by Rep. Peter King of New York. The bill would increase public safety by permitting the Attorney General to deny the transfer of a firearm or the issuance of firearms or explosives licenses to a known or suspected dangerous terrorist. On April 29, with little fanfare or corporate media coverage, H.R. 2159 was introduced and referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. The bill would increase public safety by permitting the Attorney General to deny the transfer of a firearm or the issuance of firearms or explosives licenses to a known or suspected dangerous terrorist. The entire bill can be read on the Govtrack website. A similar bill was introduced in the Senate in 2007 but did not make it out of committee. As noted above, the DHS has compiled a long list of folks the government considers terrorists. The bill, if enacted, would allow the attorney general, a documented gun-grabber, to deny millions of Americans due process.[Rep. King] would deny citizens their civil liberties based on no due process,Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, tells WorldNetDaily.

Pratt worries that the new bill will be used in conjunction with the DHS Rightwing Extremism report.By those standards, I’m one of [DHS Secretary] Janet Napolitano’s terrorists,Pratt continues. This bill would enable the attorney general to put all of the people who voted against Obama on no-gun lists, because according to the DHS, they’re all potential terrorists. Actually, we could rename this bill the Janet Napolitano Frenzied Fantasy Implementation Act of 2009.On May 1, 2009, Infowars reported on the existence of another DHS document, the Domestic Extremism Lexicon. It adds more suspected terrorists to the government’s list, including people working in the alternative media, anarchists, pro-life activists, skinheads, lone terrorists, members of the militia movement, decentralized terrorists, and others. The DHS reports were distributed to federal, state, local, and tribal counterterrorism and law enforcement officials so they may effectively deter, prevent, preempt, or respond to terrorist attacks against the United States.Earlier this week, a man was stopped in Louisiana and detained by police for the crime of displaying a Don’t tread one me bumper sticker on his car. A background check was conducted to determine whether he was a member of an extremist group, according to The American Vision website. Don’t tread on me was originally displayed on a flag designed by general and statesman Christopher Gadsden during the Revolutionary War. It is depicted as a terrorist symbol in the DHS Rightwing Extremist report.Stephen Halbrook, Independent Institute Research Fellow and author of the book The Founders’ Second Amendment, testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee in opposition to Attorney General nominee Eric Holder.During Holder’s shoo-in confirmation hearings earlier this year, Stephen Halbrook, Second Amendment attorney, detailed Holder’s vehement opposition to the right to bear arms. Holder’s role in the Waco massacre and Ruby Ridge were expected to be brought up during the hearings but were not.

Shortly after 9/11, Holder penned a Washington Post op-ed entitled Keeping Guns Away From Terrorists. In the article, the future Attorney General argues that a new law should give the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms a record of every firearm sale.He also states that prospective gun buyers should be checked against the secret watch lists compiled by various government entities. In order to make his point, Holder makes the ludicrous hypothesis that Osama bin Laden would be able to purchase an unregistered firearm at a gun show in America. The government now possesses the appropriate watch lists and has designated specific categories of Americans as domestic terrorists. If H.R. 2159 becomes law the Obama administration and the Justice Department will go after opponents to their far-reaching plan to disarm the nation and deliver it defenseless into the clutches of bankers and corporatists determined to reduce a once proud constitutional republic to the status of a fuedalist backwater.

MATTERS OF LIFE AND DEATH Jail evicts Keyes against his will,Pro-lifer says Notre Dame protesters obeying God, university unlawful May 09, 2009 6:31 pm Eastern
By Drew Zahn 2009 WorldNetDaily

Randall Terry (left) and Alan Keyes (right) amid protesters outside the entrance to Notre Dame.An unknown person, believed to be from New York, bailed former presidential candidate Alan Keyes out of jail, but the pro-life protester says he didn't want to leave. As WND reported, Keyes was arrested yesterday, along with 21 others, on charges of trespassing while he was protesting against Barack Obama's abortion record at the University of Notre Dame, which invited Obama to speak at its May 17 commencement. Now, WND is the first news source to speak with Keyes following his release. It was weird, because I said, I don't want to leave; I didn't post any bond,Keyes explained. But the police wouldn't let me stay. I asked them, Has anyone ever been re-arrested for resisting expulsion? They laughed, for they had never heard anything like that. It didn't seem like the appropriate time to be engaging in civil disobedience.Keyes was quick to point out, however, that he sees his arrest not as a matter of defying the civil authorities, but as an act of obeying God. I do not see any issue that I have with civil authority, and therefore no civil disobedience is involved,Keyes told WND. The civil authorities are acting on behest of a private party, in this case Father Jenkins, president of Notre Dame. When I set foot on Notre Dame's campus, I am, in fact, on Notre Dame's property, but that property is also part – according to its own statement – of the community of my faith. So what goes on between myself and Notre Dame is then subject to the laws that govern the community of our faith; and those are not the civil laws, but the laws of God. Witness the moral tug-of-war of a college student wrestling with the issue of abortion in the Christian film Come What May on DVD from the WND Superstore. It is not disobedience, Keyes continued.I am obeying the church's teaching and the laws of God. Father Jenkins, in issuing the order he issued, acted unlawfully. When I act according to God's will, and someone moves against me in that context, they go against the will of God, they are unlawful, and unlawful orders do not have to be obeyed. There was no civil disobedience going on; there was obedience going on,Keyes insisted. And obedience is what this is all about – obedience to the law of God.

Alan Keyes being arrested yesterday

Even though Keyes won't call it civil disobedience,he is willing to be arrested again, if that's what it takes. In fact, he plans to resume his protest, and therefore likely return to jail, on Tuesday. Keyes told WND he would have almost immediately returned to the campus, except that he has realized the importance of standing alongside others – who have come from as far away as Virginia and New Mexico, according to fellow pro-life protester Randall Terry – and therefore will wait for others to join him at the university in South Bend, Ind. This has been a watershed event for me,Keyes said. One of the things I found on the other side of this watershed is that community is one of the most essential aspects of what I am involved in. I am not acting as an individual; I am acting with and in the context of a community of the faithful. It's amazing.Keyes is calling on others to join the community of protesters at Notre Dame, even unto jail, if necessary. While we were behind bars, we prayed deeply that the shepherds of our faith – the pastors, bishops and others – would be moved to come bear witness,Keyes told WND.Because I think that would deeply, deeply move and fire up the hearts and spirits of people in the church community throughout the country and through out the world, and I think it would light a fire in the context that we're talking about, a spiritual flame that could transform the momentum of the pro-life movement. He continued, The message is very simple: If they are moved by the truth that is being witnessed here, don't resist, just come.Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry, who made headlines last week after he was also arrested on the Notre Dame campus, told WND earlier that the protests have given pro-life activists a fresh line of defense to regroup. We are asking people to come,Terry said.We want to have 50 or 100 people in jail next weekend, so that every time that the media discusses Obama speaking at Notre Dame, they talk about the fact that there are people in jail for protesting his appearance.Terry is promoting a website called StopObamaNotreDame.com so others may join the protests.

My goal, and my challenge to everyone, is to create such a political mud pit here that Obama chooses to not walk through it in order to speak,Terry said. The only way that's going to happen is by massive social tension on the ground. That's why these arrests are going to be so critical.Keyes concluded his interview with WND by reiterating his hope that the protests will make a difference. I think this is a moment that is really providential from God,Keyes said. What could otherwise work for evil – the focus upon Obama that could send a message through the world that somehow Christianity honors and approves of what he is, despite his extremist profession of that which is an abomination to God: abortion, infanticide and murder of innocent life – that could be a bad thing. But on the other hand, if there comes as a result of this a fervent witness from people drawn to just stand and prayerfully bear witness to the truth, then suddenly what was intended for evil will go throughout the world as a light shining against that darkness.

Russia's Putin warns against arms race over N.Korea MAY 10,09

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called for calm over North Korea in an interview published on Sunday and warned of the danger of an arms race developing in Asia after Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket.Putin, in an interview with Japanese media before a visit to Tokyo, called for a return to six-country talks on North Korea, comprising China, the two Koreas, Japan, Russia and the United States. It would be absolutely wrong if we increased the emotional temperature around what is happening today and used this to destabilize the region or to start some sort of arms race. I think this would be a big mistake, Putin said, according to a transcript of the interview supplied by the Russian government. We need to take account of the positive things, of what has been achieved as part of the negotiating process in the six-party format,he said in the interview with the Nikkei business daily, Kyodo news agency and public broadcaster NHK.Everyone needs to return to them (the six-country talks) without emotion and without anything else that could hinder the resumption of the process, said Putin, who rarely comments on North Korea. The United Nations Security Council last month condemned North Korea's launch of what the United States and Japan said was a long-range missile but North Korea insisted was a rocket carrying a peaceful satellite.

The Security Council called for tougher enforcement of U.N. financial sanctions and a limited trade embargo against Pyongyang, placing three large North Korean firms on a U.N. blacklist for aiding the country's nuclear and missile programs.North Korea retaliated by announcing it would boycott the six-party talks and promising to restart a nuclear plant that makes arms-grade plutonium.Pyongyang, which tested a nuclear device in 2006, also threatened a fresh nuclear test unless the U.N. Security Council apologized for chastising North Korea.(Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge, editing by Janet Lawrence)

Russia displays military might on Victory Day By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writer – Sat May 9, 5:56 am ET

MOSCOW – Rows of missiles and tanks rolled through Moscow's Red Square and dozens of combat jets roared overhead in the Victory Day parade Saturday in the largest show of Russia's military might in its post-Soviet history.Victory Day, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany, is Russia's most important secular holiday, and the parade reflected the Kremlin's efforts to revive the nation's armed forces and global clout. In a speech opening the parade, President Dmitry Medvedev said the nation's armed forces are ready to give adequate response to any aggression.Medvedev didn't specifically mention Russia's war with neighboring ex-Soviet republic Georgia in August, but alluded to it when he said that even today there are those who engage in military adventurism. The president said that among soldiers taking part in Victory Day parade, there are those who have proven high capability of the Russian military in real action,in an apparent reference to the five-day conflict. The hostilities erupted when Georgian forces moved to restore control over the separatist province of South Ossetia, which hosted Russian peacekeepers and had close ties with Moscow. Russia responded with overwhelming force, sending troops and tanks that quickly routed the Georgian military and drove deep into Georgia. The Kremlin then recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another separatist province, as independent nations and permanently stationed nearly 4,000 troops in each of the two regions, ignoring Western protests.

Medvedev underlined Russia's firm support for South Ossetia and Abkhazia by sending his Victory Day greetings to leaders of both regions, putting them on equal par with heads of ex-Soviet nations who he also congratulated.Medvedev said respect for international law is essential for maintaining global peace and reaffirmed his push for a new European security treaty. He added that security in Europe must be based on reliable arms control and reasonable sufficiency of military structures, broad cooperation between states and exclusively peaceful settlement of conflicts.

Saturday's parade displayed about 9,000 troops, more than 100 combat vehicles, including new Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles. For the first time, it featured the state-of-the art S-400 air defense missiles which Russian officials say are unrivaled in their combat capability. Also taking part in the parade were 69 combat planes and helicopters — twice the number featuring in last year's show. They included the world's heaviest An-124 Ruslan cargo plane, Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic bombers and scores of fighter jets and helicopter gunships.

Group says Israel plan to cement hold on Jerusalem By MATTI FRIEDMAN, Associated Press Writer MAY 10,09

JERUSALEM – An Israeli government plan to develop parks, hiking trails and tourist sites in east Jerusalem will permanently change the landscape of the contested city and cement Israel's hold there, an Israeli group charged in a report released Sunday ahead of the pope's visit to the city. The government has undertaken an ambitious eight-year plan that will dramatically alter the holy basin — the sensitive area in and around the Old City that is home to sites holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims, according to the Israeli group, Ir Amim, which works for coexistence in Jerusalem.

The government has largely kept the plan secret, not soliciting input from the city's Christians and Muslims or opening it to objections from the public, the group charges.

It's being done in a way that is opaque, with no public knowledge, without coordination with the churches or with the Muslim Waqf, in the precise opposite of transparent terms,Daniel Seidemann, the Israeli attorney who founded Ir Amim, said Sunday. The Waqf is the custodian of Islamic holy sites in the city. The park plan could destabilize Jerusalem and is an act of colossal irresponsibility, Seidemann said. The Israeli government says the new development will benefit all of Jerusalem's residents. An official in the prime minister's office noted that under Israeli control, people of all faiths have had access to their holy sites in the city. The government will continue to develop Jerusalem, development that will benefit all of Jerusalem's diverse population and respect the different faiths and communities that together make Jerusalem such a special city, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal statement from the government.

The Jerusalem mayor's office had no immediate comment.

Israel captured east Jerusalem, including the Old City, in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it, a move not recognized by the international community. Palestinians hope to make east Jerusalem the capital of their future state. Jerusalem, with the conflicting claims to the city, is the most intractable issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The report came ahead of Pope Benedict XVI's first visit to the Holy Land and to Jerusalem, beginning Monday. His visit could focus a spotlight on the dispute over the city. Palestinian activists have said they hope to use the papal visit to draw attention to their claims against Israel, including demolitions of Palestinian homes and construction of Jewish neighborhoods in east Jerusalem.

Jerusalem cannot be the monopoly of one religion or one state, said Anglican Rev. Naim Ateek, a Palestinian activist. We hope that the voice of his holiness the Pope is that Jerusalem must be shared.

Pope urges Middle East Christians to persevere By VICTOR L. SIMPSON, Associated Press Writer MAY 10,09

AMMAN, Jordan – The pope urged Middle East Christians Sunday to persevere in their faith despite hardships threatening their ancient communities as 20,000 people filled a Jordanian sports stadium where Benedict XVI celebrated the first open-air Mass of his Holy Land pilgrimage. The pope was welcomed at the stadium in Arabic by the Latin rite patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Fouad Twal, who recalled that Jordan has taken in more than 1 million Iraqi refugees since the start of the war, some 40,000 of them Christians. According to Vatican statistics, Christians are less than 2 percent of Jordan's overwhelmingly Muslim population. The Catholic community here is deeply touched by the difficulties and uncertainties which affect the people of the Middle East,Benedict said, speaking in English at the Mass.May you never forget the great dignity which derives from your Christian heritage, or fail to sense the loving solidarity of all your brothers and sisters in the church throughout the world, he said. The pope's weeklong Holy Land pilgrimage is his first trip as pope to the Middle East — where he has faced sharp criticism by both Muslims and Jews.Benedict angered many in the Muslim world three years ago when he quoted a Medieval text that characterized some of Islam's Prophet Muhammad's teachings as evil and inhuman, particularly his command to spread by the sword the faith. When he arrived in Jordan on Saturday, Benedict expressed his deep respect for Islam and hoped the Catholic Church would be a force for peace. The pope will also have to tread carefully when he arrives in Israel on Monday for the final four-day leg of his tour, which will also bring him to the Palestinian territories. Earlier this year, Benedict sparked outrage among Jews when he revoked the excommunication of an ultraconservative bishop who denies the Holocaust.Catholics from across the Middle East attended Sunday's Mass. Many held up flags from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and other countries. They applauded the pope's words and shouted out his name. The Mass came on the third day of Benedict's first pilgrimage to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. For years, the church has been alarmed by the declining presence of Christians in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East, driven out by war and economic hardship.

In his homily Sunday, Benedict said he hoped Christians would always get the material and moral assistance they need. He also paid tribute to Christian women in the region, saying many have "devoted their lives to building peace and fostering harmony.
Father Raymond Mousalli, an Iraqi priest, said there are about 20,000 Iraqi Christians in Jordan, and Iraqis of all faiths must sit together and find peace after years of war.The holy father speaks here, and his voice is heard in the Middle East especially by Iraqi Christians who are suffering a lot,Mousalli said.Peter Samaan, a 15-year-old Iraqi dressed in a white communion robe, said he hoped Benedict could one day travel to Iraq.We Christians want to return. We are strangers in this country. Samaan said, adding that his family fled Iraq to avoid persecution. In the afternoon, Benedict was scheduled to travel some 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Amman to Bethany beyond the Jordan river, the site of Christ's baptism. He will also bless the foundation stones of Latin and Greek Melkite churches.Associated Press Writer Dale Gavlak contributed to this report.

Chief Rabbis Won’t Greet Pope at Airport, Will Meet Him Tuesday
by Hillel Fendel MAY 10,09

(IsraelNN.com) Chief Rabbis Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger have been invited to four meetings with visiting Pope Benedict XVI. They will attend one, will not attend another, and are considering the others. The Pope’s arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport on Monday at 11 AM will be attended chiefly by politicians, and the rabbis have announced that they will not attend. The Pope is wearing two hats, their spokesman told Israel National News: Head of a state, and head of a religion. The airport ceremony is more of a political one, and therefore the rabbis will not be attending. Also on the itinerary for Monday is an interfaith meeting at the Notre Dame Guest House just outside Jerusalem’s Old City. The rabbis have not announced whether they will attend, as is the case for the Pope’s visit to the Western Wall – following his visit with the Grand Mufti on the Temple Mount – on Tuesday morning. The Chief Rabbis will host the visiting pontiff at Heichal Shlomo, the Chief Rabbinate’s former headquarters near the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem, on Tuesday at 10:35 AM.

Group Calls on Rabbis to Boycott
At least one group has called on the rabbis not to meet at all with Pope Benedict. The Task Force to Save the Nation and Land, headed by Rabbis Yaakov Yosef and Shalom Dov Wolpe, conveyed its call by telegram to the Chief Rabbinate. The message reads, in part:This involves a desecration of G-d’s Name… The very meeting and recognition of him is related to idol worship, if not outright idol worship, and involves a sin that one must die for and not violate. Not to mention that the memories still linger of the persecution of the Inquisition, as well as the Church’s role in the Holocaust. In addition, this pope is known for his personal membership in the Hitler Youth, as well as his statements in favor of a Holocaust-denier.All the above is many times worse, the message states, given that the visit is accompanied by pressures and agreements to give over to the Church parts of Mount Zion and other parts of the Holy Land. A welcome by the Chief Rabbis encourages this trend.

Hostility in 1964
The Task Force reminds the Chief Rabbis that one of their predecessors, Rabbi Yitzchak Nissim, refused to meet with a visiting pope in 1964. They do not note, however, that Rabbi Nissim only did so after the pope refused to meet him in Jerusalem. The entire visit was marked by papal hostility to the Jewish State, as the pope refused to mention Israel by name and did not visit Yad Vashem or other official Israeli sites. In 2000, when Pope John Paul II visited, Chief Rabbi Lau met him in Heichal Shlomo, and the visit was more cordial. Rabbi Lau still expressed disappointment that the visitor made no mention of Pope Pius XII’s silence during the Holocaust. In the context of Papal-Rabbinical meetings, it should be noted that Pope Pius XII refused several requests by Israel’s Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog to meet with him before and during the Holocaust and discuss how the Church could help save Jewish lives. After the war, too, Chief Rabbi Herzog asked for the Pope's assistance in locating Jewish orphans who were cared for by Catholic families, and again, the Pope refused.

Pope Named as Defendant over Plunder of Temple Vessels

(IsraelNN.com) Pro-Land of Israel activists Baruch Marzel and Itamar Ben-Gvir will roll out the red carpet for Pope Benedict XVI’s arrival – by pressing criminal charges against him.As the Pope arrives in Israel on Monday, the activists will be at the Jerusalem Magistrates Court, filing a criminal complaint in which the Pope tops the list of defendants. The Temple in the future (Temple Institute website)The criminal complaint details a record of treasures and possessions that belong to the Jewish People that are allegedly being held in the Vatican in Rome. Among the treasures claimed are vessels plundered from the Temple by the Romans under the command of then-general Titus, including the seven-branched golden Menorah. The complainants write in the complaint that The vessels were plundered and Titus who burned the Temple, took them to Rome. They complain that in addition to the Menorah, other vessels were plundered, including the Laver Basin, the Table of the Showbread, the Golden Altar, the Copper Altar, and the Ornamental Curtain at the entrance to the Holy of Holies. The complainants claim that at least some of the vessels are still existent in the Vatican cellars in Rome. The complainants add that on separate dates -- many hundreds of years later -- various tractates of the Talmud, books of Maimonides, and around 7,500 works on Jewish philosophy and science were stolen and remain in the Vatican library. The Seven-Branched Menorah (recreated by the Temple Institute)The Ark of the Covenant (recreated by Temple Institute)According to information that the complainants have access to, these books can be found in the Vatican – and some of them were on display in an international book fair. They additionally claimed that the Vatican’s vaults are controlled by the Pope and others accused in the charge sheet. The Pope and others are accused of possessing stolen goods; receiving items considered stolen and receiving goods that were obtained through criminal means.

The list of witnesses appearing on the complaint include Israel’s Chief Rabbis, Rabbi Yonah Metzger and Rabbi Shlomo Amar, along with Rabbi Yisrael Ariel of the Temple Institute. In addition to the criminal complaint, Ben-Gvir and Marzel intend to take legal action to delay the Pope’s departure from Israel until they receive a decision on their complaint.Silver trumpets used for Divine service (recreated by the Temple Institute)The Arch of Titus in Rome depicts troops under Roman general Titus plundering Temple treasures, including the Menorah. Throughout the ages, numerous Jewish tourists have claimed that they saw Temple treasures in the Vatican’s vaults. The Talmud details a Sage who said that when he was in Rome, he saw the Kohen HaGadol’s (High Priest's) headband with the Divine Name inscribed on it.But at least one archaeological researcher claims that the Temple Treasures are not being held by the Vatican. Dr. Sean Kingsley, author of God's Gold: The Quest for the Lost Temple Treasure of Jerusalem, has stated that the looted treasures are somewhere in the Holy Land. One thing is for sure – it is not imprisoned deep in Vatican City, Dr. Kingsley told the British Sunday Times in 2006.Gil Ronen contributed to this article.

ISAIAH 30:10-15
10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
11 Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
14 And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
16 But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

REVELATION 11:1-2
1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

DANIEL 9:27
27 And he( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

ZECHARIAH 6:12-13
12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

ISAIAH 60:9-10
9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.

ISAIAH 2:1-5
1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

MARK 11:9-10,15-17
9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Even After EU Vote, European Shechita Still in Danger
by Hillel Fendel MAY 10,09

(IsraelNN.com) Despite the EU Parliament's vote Wednesday to legalize shechita, the Jewish method of humane animal slaughter is still very much in danger. It was reported on Thursday that the European Jewish Community hailed the European Parliament’s vote to legalize the traditional Jewish method of slaughter into European law. However, it was later clarified that in fact, the Parliament only has consultative status in this case, and that the European Union’s Council of Agricultural Ministers will have the final say when it convenes next month.During the original debate on this issue in Norway, one of the parliamentarians said straight out, If they don't like it, let them go live somewhere else.Shechita,as the Jewish method of animal slaughter is referred to in Hebrew, is currently forbidden in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania; Switzerland permits shechita for poultry only. Switzerland and Norway are not member nations of the EU.Though the EU Parliament vote represents a significant victory for the coalition of the European Jewish Congress, as well the Conference of European Rabbis and Shechita EU, the fight is far from over. The Parliament resolved only to introduce laws that would be binding across Europe to allow animal slaughter in accordance with religious rites.

However, the final text of the proposed amendment to EU law will be brought before the above-mentioned Council in June – but not necessarily in a manner favorable to Jewish interests. The Council, which will convene on June 22-23 in Brno, Czech Republic, will vote on a proposal to require that all animals be pre-stunned before slaughter. If the regulation passes, EU Member States would ban a practice that has been governed by halakhah (Jewish Law) and observed by Jews for thousands of years. Pre-stunning is forbidden by Jewish Law, and thus a ban on kosher slaughter in the European Union may be a reality as of next month.A spokesperson for the European Jewish Congress, which has been spearheading efforts to legalize shechita all across Europe, confirmed to Israel National News that only if the Council decides to pass exactly the same proposal as amended by the Parliament will this change of legalization take place. The spokesperson further acknowledged that though the Council must take the Parliament vote into account, it is unlikely that the same vote will pass in the Council.Melchior: ...no coincidence that one of the first things Nazi Germany forbade was kosher slaughter. The regulation must not be drafted to allow Governments in Europe to threaten our culture and our freedom to observe our religion, said Philip Carmel of the Conference of European Rabbis.

We will be working very closely with Member States to achieve a satisfactory outcome for all Jewish communities in Europe when they agree upon the final text in June.Rabbi Michael Melchior, former chief rabbi of Norway and a former Knesset Member, has said that kosher slaughter is more humane than the more common methods of animal slaughter. The shechitah process ensures that the animal loses consciousness immediately,he explained. We have been dealing with this issue for many years, and there are many scientific studies that back us up.The anti-shechita campaign has been viewed as anti-Semitic by many Jews in Europe. When Holland outlawed the kosher slaughter of large bulls in 2002, Rabbi Melchior responded, They simply don't want foreigners, and they don't want Jews. I won't say this is the only motivation, but it's certainly no coincidence that one of the first things Nazi Germany forbade was kosher slaughter.I also know, the rabbi said, that during the original debate on this issue in Norway, where shechitah has been banned since 1930, one of the parliamentarians said straight out, If they don't like it, let them go live somewhere else.

26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Cleanup begins after Midwest storms killed 6 By JIM SALTER, Associated Press Writer – Sat May 9, 11:05 pm ET

ST. LOUIS – Residents of the Midwest cleared away wreckage Saturday following a wave of powerful storms that splintered homes, knocked out power to thousands and killed six people.Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed Friday in Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri and 150,000 Missouri utility customers lost power. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency. My primary concern is the safety of Missourians and this executive order makes state agency resources available to help communities respond to the storms, Nixon said.In southern Illinois, more than 56,200 customers of the utility Ameren still had no electricity late Saturday, the company said. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Saturday declared three southern counties disaster areas.Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear declared an emergency in central and south-eastern sections of his state Saturday, and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin made the same declaration for six counties in that state.Trees were down and windows were broken on the campus of Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus, but the school said weekend commencement ceremonies would go on scheduled. Friday's graduation ceremonies were canceled. On Saturday, a line of thunderstorms stretched from Arkansas and northern Mississippi across Tennessee and Kentucky. Some homes were evacuated early Saturday in southern West Virginia because of flooding caused by more than 2 inches of rain, said state Homeland Security Operations Director Paul Howard. High water also closed several main roads. No injuries were reported. Appalachian Power reported about 6,000 customers were still without service Saturday evening, down from about 10,000 earlier in the day.

The hardest hit area in West Virginia was Mingo County. Robert Jelacic, a Homeland Security shift leader, said Saturday evening that an aerial survey of the county determined that about 100 structures were destroyed, nearly 500 had major damage and more than 1,000 had minor damage. He said emergency personnel planned to deliver food and drinking water to the area Sunday. Two people were killed near Poplar Bluff, Mo., when wind knocked a tree onto their sport utility vehicle. In Missouri's Dallas County, a man in his 70s had a fatal heart attack after he and his wife were sucked from their home by a tornado and thrown into a field 75 to 100 feet away, said county emergency management director Larry Highfill. The wife was hospitalized in fair condition.A 54-year-old woman was killed in southeast Kansas in a mobile home that was blown off its foundation. And in central Kentucky, officials blamed a tornado with winds of 120 mph for the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in a pond near a mobile home community.Wind in southeast Kansas area reached 120 mph, destroying the New Albany United Methodist Church, the town's post office and at least one home, authorities said. Major damage also was reported to a high school in Cherokee, Kan.The National Weather Service said it received multiple reports of tornadoes from one end of Missouri to the other, mostly south of Interstate 44.The weather service confirmed that at least two tornadoes touched down Friday morning in southwest Missouri's Greene County. The county's Office of Emergency Management counted three homes and one business destroyed with 298 homes, 29 businesses and 13 schools damaged. In southern Illinois, the storm system peeled siding and roofs off homes and other buildings, blowing out car windows and tearing up trailer parks. Wind gusted to 100 mph in the Carbondale area and sustained wind was measured up to 90 mph.

Carbondale Township fire Capt. Mark Black said he wasn't sure if a tornado touched down in his area but the winds were just amazing. They were howling and the siding on the trailers was flying through the air and there was a pretty hard rain.In sparsely populated Dallas County, Mo., seven people were hurt as wind — possibly a tornado — destroyed 35 homes and damaged numerous others, state emergency management officials said.Michael Bryant, assistant deputy emergency management director for Kentucky's Madison County, said at least eight other people were injured by the tornado that killed two. About 150 homes are damaged and destroyed, he said. It sounded like an airplane taking off, but I knew it wasn't,said Richmond, Ky., resident Lonnie Hall, whose four-year-old home was toppled. The wind start picking up, and I yelled to everyone Let's go to the basement. In 10 or 15 seconds, it was over with.Associated Press writers Cheryl Wittenauer, Heather Hollingsworth, Jim Suhr, Ashley M. Heher, Carla K. Johnson, Jeffrey McMurray and Tammy Webber contributed to this report.

US, Costa Rica swine flu deaths reported By Rory Marshall And Marianela Jimenez, Associated Press Writers – MAY 10,09

SEATTLE – The number of swine flu-related deaths outside of Mexico rose after the U.S. reported its third fatality and Costa Rica its first, but both men also suffered from complicating illnesses, health officials said.In Mexico, the center of the outbreak where 48 people with swine flu have died, most of the victims have been adults aged 20 to 49, and many had no reported complicating factors.Elsewhere, five others have died while infected with the virus, including the two fatalities reported Saturday, but each of them had additional health issues. People with chronic illnesses usually are at greatest risk for severe problems from flu, along with the elderly and young children. In Washington state, health officials said a man in his 30s had underlying heart conditions and viral pneumonia when he died Thursday from what appeared to be complications from swine flu. The state Department of Health said in a release Saturday that swine flu was considered a factor in his death. We're working with local and federal partners to track this outbreak, said Washington State Secretary of Health Mary Selecky. We urge people to take this outbreak, and the seasonal flu we see every year, very seriously. The death of a 53-year-old man in Costa Rica on Saturday was the first involving swine flu outside of North America. He also suffered from diabetes and chronic lung disease, the Health Ministry said.

Previously, U.S. authorities reported swine flu deaths of a toddler with a heart defect and a woman with rheumatoid arthritis, and Canadian officials said the woman who died there also had other health problems but gave no details. The Costa Rican fatality was one of eight swine flu cases in the country confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Minister Maria Luisa Avila told The Associated Press.Avila said officials had been unable to determine how the Costa Rican patients became infected, but she said he had not recently traveled abroad. Many flu sufferers in other nations have been linked to recent trips to the United States or Mexico.Mexico, which raised its count of confirmed cases to 1,626 based on tests of earlier patients, continued to gradually lift a nationwide shutdown of schools, businesses, churches and soccer stadiums. But an upswing in suspected — though not confirmed — cases in parts of Mexico prompted authorities in at least six of the country's 31 states to delay plans to let primary school students return to class on Monday after a two-week break. It has been very stable ... except for those states,Health Department spokesman Carlos Olmos said, referring to states in central and southern Mexico.Mexican health authorities released a breakdown of the first 45 of the country's 48 flu deaths that showed that 84 percent of the victims were between the ages of 20 and 54. Only 2.2 percent were immune-depressed, and none had a previous history of respiratory disease. In Canada, officials said almost 500 hogs quarantined on an Alberta farm after being diagnosed with swine flu had been killed because animals were becoming overcrowded since the facility was barred from shipping any to market. They were not culled for being sick. They were culled because of animal welfare concerns, Dr. Gerald Hauer, the province's chief veterinarian, told reporters. He said about 1,700 pigs remained on the farm.Marshall reported from Seattle; Jimenez reported from San Jose, Costa Rica.

Most Santa Barbara fire evacuations being lifted By AMY TAXIN, Associated Press Writer MAY 10,09

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Thousands of residents were back home Saturday as a blanket of cool, moist air flowing in from the Pacific Ocean tamed a wind-driven wildfire that burned dozens of homes along the outskirts of town during the week.Cheers erupted at an evacuation center when Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown announced that mandatory evacuation orders for most areas were being downgraded to evacuation warnings, meaning residents could return but would have to remain alert.

Among the first to return were Jonathan Kenny, 44, and his wife, Susan Kim, 42, who found their home covered in ash but still standing near blackened hillsides that showed just how close the fire came.I feel like we dodged a bullet on this one, said Kenny, who watered plants and fed goldfish in a backyard pond. They're not floating belly up, so that's a good sign,Kim said. But a short distance away up a narrow canyon road, gutted homes and burned out cars awaited the return of their owners. A scorched palm tree jutted toward a clear, blue sky and a lawn chair, scorched appliances and metal filing cabinets were among the few recognizable remnants.More than 30,000 people had been under mandatory evacuation orders dating back as far as Tuesday afternoon, when the fire erupted just above Santa Barbara on the face of steep Santa Ynez Mountains. An additional 23,000 had been on evacuation standby.By Saturday evening, well over half of the those residents were back in their homes, Santa Barbara County sheriff's Commander Darin Fotheringham said.Fire officials also revised their count of burnt houses, saying the blaze had destroyed 31 homes and two detached garages, and damaged another 47 homes. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection had incorrectly reported on its Web site earlier that 80 structures were destroyed after the count of destroyed and damaged structures was mistakenly combined.

Notorious local winds known as sundowners sweeping from inland and down the face of the mountains drove the fire into outlying neighborhoods Wednesday afternoon, causing most of the destruction, and again late Thursday and early Friday.A predicted sundowner failed to materialize Friday night, and instead the normal flow of air from the Pacific Ocean pushed ashore a dense, moist marine layer that didn't let the sun peek through until nearly midday. Officials had said an onshore flow would raise humidity levels and blow the fire away from developed areas on the foothills. The National Weather Service on Saturday dropped fire weather warnings and predicted that overnight clouds and fog would continue through Monday morning before a return of a weak-to-moderate sundowners in the Santa Ynez range Monday night and into midweek.

Firefighters were cautious but said the blaze that had covered more than 13 square miles was 40 percent contained. Water-dropping helicopters continued to shuttle between reservoirs and hot spots but flames were not apparent and the huge plumes of smoke that loomed over the city for days had vanished. It's easy on a day like today to look around and go, Wow, you know, we've got this thing beat,Joe Waterman, the overall fire commander from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said Saturday evening. We don't have this thing beat yet.The blaze was expected to be fully contained by Wednesday. On Friday, it had been active along a five-mile front just above Santa Barbara, west toward neighboring Goleta and east toward the community of Montecito.Brown said the evacuations were being lifted in phases to avoid traffic jams from returning residents. We hope to get everyone back as soon as possible, but it's nice to be able to deliver some good news to you, for a change.the sheriff said.Martha Marsango, an 87-year-old widow, didn't wait for evacuation orders to lift. She said she made her way back home Friday, adding that she knew she could replace everything that was in it, but it is still my home.

Resident Eric Hall, 59, said he believed the worst was over when he felt the mist sweep in off the ocean. The weather is cooperating, said Hall, who was having ash cleaned off his daughter's car at a car wash. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger visited evacuees housed at the University of California, Santa Barbara, campus before the sheriff's announcement. I think one woman came up to me and said I like it here much better than my home because here finally I'm getting served other than me always having to provide for the family. So there's a great sense of humor here, Schwarzenegger said.Actor Rob Lowe, an area resident, said the fire was scary but he shared the governor's sentiment about how residents have dealt with it. This kind of a fire was touch-and-go for a long time,he said.I've got a lot of friends who have been evacuated. We're sheltering people at our house. The community just pulled together.Associated Press video journalist John Mone and writer Raquel Maria Dillon contributed to this report. ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Warning: Sunspot cycle beginning to rise By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer – Sat May 9, 4:55 pm ET

WASHINGTON – When the sun sneezes it's Earth that gets sick. It's time for the sun to move into a busier period for sunspots, and while forecasters expect a relatively mild outbreak by historical standards, one major solar storm can cause havoc with satellites and electrical systems here.Like hurricanes, a weak cycle refers to the number of storms, but it only takes one powerful storm to create chaos, said scientist Doug Biesecker of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's space weather prediction center.A report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a storm as severe as one in 1859 occurred today, it could cause $1 trillion to $2 trillion in damage the first year and take four to 10 years to recover. The 1859 storm shorted out telegraph wires, causing fires in North America and Europe, sent readings of Earth's magnetic field soaring, and produced northern lights so bright that people read newspapers by their light.Today there's a lot more than telegraph lines at stake. Vulnerable electrical grids circle the globe, satellites now vital for all forms of communications can be severely disrupted along with the global positioning system. Indeed, the panel warned that a strong blast of solar wind can threaten national security, transportation, financial services and other essential functions.

The solar prediction center works closely with industry and government agencies to make sure they are prepared with changes in activity and prepared to respond when damage occurs, Biesecker said in a briefing. While the most extreme events seem unlikely this time, there will probably be smaller scale disruptions to electrical service, airline flights, GPS signals and television, radio and cell phones. On the plus side, the solar storms promote the colorful auroras, known as the northern and southern lights, high in the sky over polar areas. An international panel headed by Biesecker said Friday it expects the upcoming solar cycle to be the weakest since 1928.The prediction calls for the solar cycle to peak in May 2013 with 90 sunspots per day, averaged over a month. If the prediction proves correct it will be the weakest cycle since a peak of 78 daily sunspots in 1928.

Measurement of sunspot cycles began in the 1750s.

The panel described solar storms as eruptions of energy and matter that escape from the sun. At least some of this heads toward the Earth.Solar cycles of more and fewer sunspots last several years and the cycle currently building up will be number 24 since counting began. It's only the third time researchers have tried to make such a forecast. In 1989 a panel predicted Cycle 22, which peaked that year. And in 1996 scientists predicted Cycle 23.Both earlier groups did better at predicting timing than intensity, according to Biesecker. The last solar minimum occurred in December, the researchers said.W. Dean Pesnell of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the forecasts are based on such indicators as the strength of the sun's magnetic field at the poles and the reaction of the Earth's magnetic field to the sun. Both are weak right now, he said, with only a few sunspots visible since 2007. A preliminary forecast issued in 2007 was split over the outlook for the upcoming cycle, Biesecker said the researchers have now reached consensus. On the Net:

Admin wants Fed to oversee systemic risk: sources
Sat May 9, 2009 12:59am BST By Kevin Drawbaugh and Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration is expected to propose legislation by June calling for the U.S. Federal Reserve to play a central role in regulating systemic risk in the economy, trade association sources said on Friday. Now that the U.S. bank stress tests are over, the administration is refocusing on a drive to tighten regulation of banks and markets to prevent another financial crisis like the one that is currently ravaging economies worldwide.Systemic risk refers to problems in the financial system large enough to damage the overall economy. For instance, the government last year bailed out insurer American International Group because its failure was seen as a systemic risk.Beyond that, there is little agreement among officials about the much-debated idea of setting up a government regulator to monitor and manage systemic risk. The administration left the door open to further discussion in remarks by a Treasury Department spokesman.Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is open to the possibility of a council to coordinate among bank regulators, including the agency overseeing the stability of the system as a whole, the spokesman told Reuters on Friday.Secretary Geithner believes that we need a single independent regulator with responsibility for systemically important firms and critical payment and settlement systems, spokesman Andrew Williams said.He does see a role, however, for a council to coordinate among the various regulators, including the systemic risk regulator,Williams added.

TREASURY SAYS TO MOVE QUICKLY

The systemic risk regulator proposal would have to dovetail with other administration initiatives, including empowering the government to seize and resolve the problems of large, non-bank financial firms, using the established bank resolution authority of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp as a model. The administration is committed to enacting proposals into law this year, the trade association sources said. The sources also said their information came from a briefing administration officials held with industry executives on Friday.National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, will lead the effort on regulatory restructuring, the sources said.Geithner told Reuters Television on Friday the administration wants to move swiftly. Thu May 7, 8:22 PM

CALGARY (CBC) - A Calgary shelter is scanning the fingerprints of its homeless clients, citing problems with gang members and drug dealers sneaking into the facility.Dermot Baldwin, head of the Calgary Drop-In Centre, said people who have been barred from the shelter use fake identification to get in.The homeless shelter is testing a new $150,000 security system that scans clients' fingerprints, and Baldwin said he expects it will be fully up and running in a few weeks. The system is not a violation of privacy, Baldwin said. The information the scanner takes is for the centre's use only and will not be passed on to anyone else. This is a private system, internal to us. Out of 187 people, we had four people that wanted to know more about it, with one serious objection, he said.Brian Edy, a civil rights lawyer, suggested that the centre rely on metal detectors or install lockers for people to leave their belongings outside as alternatives to the intrusive fingerprinting. We can give that helping hand without requiring fingerprints before you get a bowl of soup, he said on CBC Radio's The Homestretch on Thursday.

But they should not be treating everyone who goes to the centre as if they're potentially a criminal. After all, these are Albertans, these are Canadians who have really done nothing wrong except be poor.Edy said he's worried the fingerprinting policy might discourage homeless people from seeking shelter in frigid weather. The shelter started looking into beefing up security after a 2007 survey of its clients showed they fear for their safety.A survey of about 300 clients showed three-quarters of them have been victims of crime, often robbery and assaults that were committed outside the shelter by strangers. But the same number also said they did not feel any safer inside the centre.

DOJ Budget Details High-Tech Crime Fighting Tools,New Surveillance Programs Look Ahead as FBI Seeks to Overcome Past Criticism By JASON RYAN May 9, 2009

SHARE The release of the 2010 budget request has shed more light on some FBI surveillance programs the bureau is currently developing and testing. The release of the 2010 budget request has shed more light on some FBI surveillance programs the bureau is currently developing and testing. While the FBI has been criticized at times for its slow reforms after the 9/11 attacks, which revealed the FBI did not have adequate computer resources, some of the new programs sound like something out of a high-tech cloak and dagger film. The budget request shows that the FBI is currently developing a new Advanced Electronic Surveillance program which is being funded at $233.9 million for 2010. The program has 133 employees, 15 of whom are agents.According to the budget documents released Thursday, the program, otherwise known as Going Dark, supports the FBI's electronic surveillance intelligence collection and evidence gathering capabilities, as well as those of the greater Intelligence Community.

The term Going Dark does not refer to a specific capability, but is a program name for the part of the FBI, Operational Technology Division's (OTD) lawful interception program which is shared with other law enforcement agencies,an FBI spokesman said. The term applies to the research and development of new tools, technical support and training initiatives.According to FBI officials, the program is designed to help the agency deal with changing technology and ways to intercept phone calls such as those used by VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phones or technology such as Skype. The program is also conducting research on ways to conduct automated analysis to look for links between subjects of surveillance and other investigative suspects. Asked about the program, Jim Dempsey with the Center for Democracy and Technology said, the FBI has long been conducting research on new communications technologies. They complain about the difficulty of intercepting new technologies -- especially when they want weaker legal standards or more money -- but I think they have done a very good job of keeping up.Like the National Security Agency, he continued, their biggest challenge is not collection -- it is analysis -- they are drowning in data.Dempsey also said, It is appropriate for the FBI to develop more and more powerful interception tools, but the privacy laws that are supposed to guide and limit the use of those tools have not kept pace.High-Tech Biometrics, Sharing Information with Interpol Another high-tech program includes the development of the Biometric Technology Center, a joint Justice, FBI and DoD program. Building the center will cost $97.6 million and will serve as a research and development center for biometric technology. Last year, the FBI announced it would partner with the University of West Virginia to establish the center.

After being fully deployed the NGI contract could cost up to $1 billion. DOJ's budget request also mentions an INTERPOL program called Project Vennlig, which is a terrorist information sharing program run by the international anti-crime organization. The Defense Department initiated the program to obtain criminal information about insurgents killed or captured in Iraq. The DOJ budget request notes the program gathers information from insurgents' cell phones and documents found in their possession: The purpose of the initiative is to obtain and integrate collected information for the use of INTERPOL member countries and U.S. law enforcement agencies in proactively targeting terrorism.
