FIRST ANGEL TO DR DOCTORIAN
The first angel said: I have a message for all of Asia. When he said that, in a split few seconds, I could see all of China, India, the Asian countries like Vietnam, Laos - I've never been to those countries. I saw the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. And then the angel showed me all of Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya and down to Australia and New Zealand.I am the angel of Asia, he said. And in
his hand I saw a tremendous trumpet that he is going to blow all over Asia. Whatever the angel said, it's going to happen with the trumpet of the Lord all over Asia. Millions are going to hear the mighty voice of the Lord. Then the angel said, There shall be disaster, starvation - many will die from hunger. Strong winds will be looked like has never happened before. A great part shall be shaken and destroyed. Earthquakes will take place all over Asia and the sea will cover the earth.I saw this on June 20. Today is August 16. A few weeks ago I heard the news of villages completely wiped out and washed into the sea in Papua New Guinea. Thousand of lives in great jeopardy. That happened a few weeks ago, and the angel told me it is going to happen all over Asia. The earth will fall into the sea, I heard the angel say, part of Australia will be shaken. Australia will be divided, and a great part will go under the ocean. This was frightening - I wondered whether I was hearing right. But the angel said,Millions will die in China and in India. Nation will be against nation, brother against brother. Asians will fight each other. Nuclear weapons shall be used, killing millions. Twice I heard the words,  Catastrophic! Catastrophic! then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.I was trembling while the angel was speaking. Then he looked at me and smiled and
said, There shall be the greatest spiritual awakening - bondage will be broken. Barriers will be removed. And all over Asia - China - India - people will turn to Christ. In Australia there shall be tremendous revival. I heard the angel of Asia say, It is the last harvest.Then as if the Lord were speaking, he said, I shall prepare My church for the return of Christ. I was happy with such good news after the message of judgment. All the time the five angels were in my room I could feel their presence - it was tremendous.


SECOND ANGEL TO DR DOCTORIAN
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said, Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran. I saw those countries in a few split seconds. All of Turkey and those [inaudible;] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another. I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries.I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction - men destroying one another.I heard these words, Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come.The angel said, The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God. I saw fires rising
to heaven. The angel said, This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries.The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The
angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

THIRD ANGEL TO DR DOCTORIAN
Then one of the angels with wings showed me Europe from one end to the other - from the north all the way down to Spain and Portugal. In his hand he had a scale of measurement. I saw him fly over Europe, and I heard the words, I am grieved. I am grieved. Unrighteousness, uncleanness, ungodliness - all over Europe. The sin has risen to heaven. The Holy Spirit is grieved. I saw the rivers of Europe flooding and covering millions of houses. Millions drown. After seeing this, I read the news a few weeks ago. Czechoslovakia had the worst flooding ever. I also heard that the big river in China is in tremendous danger of thousands of houses being destroyed in flooding. I didn't know all this news until after I had seen the vision and heard what the angels told me.Suddenly I heard earthquakes all over Europe.  Countries that have had no earthquakes shall be shaken, said the angel. And suddenly, in my spirit, I saw the Eiffel Tower in Paris crumbling falling down. A great part of Germany destroyed. The great city of London - destruction everywhere. I saw floods all over Scandinavia. I looked to the south and saw Spain and Portugal passing through hunger and great destruction.Many will die from hunger all over Spain and Portugal. I was disturbed by all this news, and I said, Lord, what about your children? The angel said, I shall prepare them. They shall be looking for the appearing of the Lord. Many will cry to me in those days and I will save them. I shall perform mighty miracles for them and show them My power. So in the midst of great destruction, there will be the grace of God in those countries. I was happy that God has His protection over His children.

FOURTH ANGEL TO DR DOCTORIAN
Now we go to Africa. I saw the fourth angel with wings fly over Africa, and I could see from Capetown in the south all the way to the north of  Cairo - I saw all the countries there, more than fifty of them. The angel of Africa had a sword in his hand - a tremendous, sharp sword.Suddenly I heard him say, Innocent blood has been shed. Divisions amongst the people generations far from the Lord - they have killed one
another, thousands of people. I have seen my faithful children in Africa, and I shall reward all the faithful in the continent of Africa. I shall bless them abundantly. I shall control the weather - scorching and burning of the sun in some parts. Great rivers shall dry up, and millions will die from starvation. In other parts, flooding. Foundations shall be shaken. My sword shall judge the unrighteous and the bloodthirsty. So many earthquakes shall happen that rivers shall flow different directions in the continent, flooding many villages. I saw great pieces falling from the sky over different parts of Africa .There shall be trembling of the earth like has not been seen since the creation. None shall escape the sword of the Lord. I saw the River Nile drying up. It is the god of Egypt. Fishes dead and stinking all over Egypt. A great part of the middle of Africa will be covered with water - millions dying. Lord, I said, It is all bad news. All destruction. Any good news? The Lord said, The final day has come. Judgment day is here. My love has been refused now, and the end has come. I was shaking and trembling. I thought
I cannot bear it.

FIFTH ANGEL TO DR DOCTORIAN
Then I saw the last angel flying over North and South America - all the way from the North Pole down to Argentina. From the east of the U.S.A. to California. I saw in his hand a bowl. The angel said he would pour out over these countries the judgments that were in the bowl. Then I heard the angel say, No justice anymore. No righteousness. No holiness. Idolatry. Materialism. Drunkenness. Bondage of sin. Shedding of innocent blood - millions of babies being killed before they are born. Families are broken. An adulterous generation. Sodom and Gomorrah is here. The days of Noah are here. False preachers. False prophets. Refusing of my love. Many of them have the imitation of religion, but denying the real power.When I heard all that, I begged the angel, Can you not wait for a little while? Don't pour it. Give a chance for repentance.The angel said, Many times God has spared and has spoken, but they have not listened. His patience has come to an end. Beware, the time has come. They have loved money and pleasure more than they have loved Me. As the angel began to pour from the bowl in his hand, I saw tremendous icebergs melting. When that happened I saw floods all over Canada and North America - all the rivers flood; destruction everywhere. I heard the world market collapsing with mighty earthquakes, and New York skyscrapers were tumbling - millions dying.I saw ships in the ocean sinking. I heard explosions all over the north country. I saw the angel pouring over Mexico and two oceans joining together- the Atlantic and the Pacific. A great part of north Brazil covered with water, the Amazon River turning into a great sea. Forests destroyed and flooded. Major cities in Brazil destroyed; earthquakes in many places. As the angel poured, great destruction took place in Chile and Argentina as never before. The whole world was shaking. Then I heard the angel say, This will happen in a very short time.I said, Can't you postpone? Don't pour these things out all over the globe. And suddenly I saw the five angels standing around the globe lifting up their hands and their wings towards heaven and saying, All glory to the Lord of heaven and earth. Now the time has come and He will glorify His Son. The earth shall be burned and destroyed. All things shall pass away. The new Heaven and New Earth shall come. God shall destroy the works of the devil forever. I shall show My power - how I will protect My children in the midst of all this destruction.

The strange story of Clarita Villanueva

 

Clarita Villanueva, a 17-year-old Filipina girl, had known a life of tragedy. She did not remember her father. She did not know if he had died or had deserted her mother.

Her mother was a spiritist and a fortune teller by vocation. The girl was brought up watching her mother holding seances, communicating with the dead, and using clairvoyance to predict to sinful people what they could expect in the future. Her mother took money from people for her services, and then laughed at them behind their backs. To her it was all just a game, a means of making a living by duping unsuspecting and gullible people.

When Clarita was still very young, about twelve years old, her mother died. Since she did not have any immediate family to take her in and care for her, she became a vagabond. She fell into the hands of harlots and at the tender age of 12 was selling her body as a prostitute. The harlots taught her how to handle men, how to get money for her services.

Clarita worked her way up from her island home to the capital city of Manila. The big city was a hiding place, a center of money and vice for her business. The local harlots became her teachers and she learned the night life in the big capital city. In Manila there were more men to seduce. By the time she was 17 years old, Clarita was frequenting the bars and taverns of Manila, living the ‘gay life’ by soliciting men for harlotry.

But one morning at 2 a.m. on the streets of down-town Manila, Clarita made the mistake of offering her services to a plainclothes police officer. The policeman called for a vehicle and Clarita was taken to the ancient Bilibid Prison, used as the city jail. Bilibid has been a prison for over 300 years. It was built by the Spanish and used by the Americans, the Filipinos, and the Japanese as a prison and a place of torment.

Two days after Clarita was incarcerated, there struck the strangest phenomenon to ever hit Bilibid Prison in its 300-year history. This young harlot was bitten severely on her body by unseen and unknown alien entities. There were two of them – a huge monster-like spirit and a smaller one. They sunk their fangs and teeth deep into her flesh making deep indentations. They would bite her neck, back, legs and arms simultaneously. Blood flowed, mostly underneath her skin, from the bites. The 17-year-old girl screamed in horror and fainted.

The guards and medics heard the commotion and came running to the women’s division of the prison. The other female inmates pointed to the writhing, tormented girl on a cot.

The girl was taken to the prison hospital for observation and treatment where all the doctors declared that they had never seen anything like it.

These strange demonic bitings began to occur daily, baffling all who saw it. Dr. Lara, the prison physician, appealed for help through the media and permitted many to view the strange phenomenon. Filipino, Chinese and American doctors, university professors, and other professionals were called in to analyze the situation.

The news media soon caught wind of the occurrence and sent reporters out to investigate. The newspapers, radio stations and magazines found it their kind of story and began to publicize it. Even the cartoonists were soon drawing pictures of the entities from Clarita’s descriptions, as the bitings continued day by day. The UPI and other world news services began to report the phenomenon worldwide.

In my travels throughout the world, I have not been in any country in which the newspapers did not give this story front-page coverage. Switzerland, France, Germany, England, Canada, the United States – everywhere this strange phenomenon was front-page news at the time.

One doctor accused the girl of putting on an act in order only to get publicity. Clarita gazed at the doctor. With her snake-like eyes she said: ‘You will die’. He didn’t feel anything at the moment, but the following day the doctor expired without even getting sick. He simply died. Fear struck the city when that news was spread about. The girl was not only a harlot, they said, she was also a witch who could speak curses upon human beings and they would die.

The chief jailer had a confrontation with the girl. He had kicked her for something she had done wrong while rebelling against him. Clarita looked at the jailer in cold, inhuman hate and said: ‘You will die!’ Within four days the man was dead and buried, the second person to fall victim to her curse.

I walked into Bilibid Prison just as the funeral cortege moved out. The prison guards had paid their last respects to their chief. Dr. Lara, the chief medical officer, and his staff were deeply concerned. They had a prisoner who certainly was not crazy, but who was being wildly attacked by unseen entities and being bitten deeply on all parts of her body by creatures no none else could see. I have never seen such a fearful and perplexed group of people as those I met in that prison that day. They were afraid that this thing would kill them as it had the two others who dared cross it. It was their responsibility to do something for the girl, yet they had no earthly idea what to do about the situation. It was beyond their medical knowledge.

Who were these alien entities? The large one, Clarita said, was a monster in size. He was black and very hairy. He had fangs that came down on each side of his mouth, plus a set of buck-teeth all the way around. The doctors verified her description by the teeth marks on her body: buck-teeth solid, all the way around the bite, rather than sharp teeth in the front.

The smaller entity was almost like a dwarf. He would climb up her body to bite her upper torso. Both of these spirits liked to bite her where there was a lot of flesh, like the back of her leg, the back of her neck, the fleshy part of her upper arms. They would bite deep into her, leaving ugly, painful bruises.

Dr. Lara and his medical assistants called in all sort of observers, medical doctors, surgeons, psychiatrists and professors from the Far East University and the University of Santo Tomas. No one had ever witnessed such strange and demonic behavior. Nor did they know any solution to the problem. They all wondered who would be the next victim of her curse.

Dr. Lara and his staff sent out word everywhere: ‘Come and help us. Please help us’. They received 3,000 cables from heathen countries suggesting possible cures, but not one from a Christian country.

Do you see how we Christians have been asleep? The word went out over the world. Three thousand telegrams came in, mostly from Japan and India, telling them what to do with an invisible biting monster. But not one Christian nation had any solution to the problem.

They asked in Manila for somebody to come and help. The only group who turned up were the spiritists who said it was John the Baptist biting her. The officials asked the spiritists to leave.

I was the next one to come upon the scene. After three awful weeks of this torture, a radio reporter came to Bilibid and taped a session while the doctors were violently struggling with the demonized harlot. The reporter immediately released his story on a local radio station, just after the 10 o’clock news.

This was the first I had heard of the hell in Bilibid Prison. The newspapers had given it front-page coverage, but I was too busy building a church to read the newspapers. That’s what the devil would like for us to do, to get so involved in taking care of our own little mission that we allow him a free rein to do anything he wants to do.

When the Bible says to be vigilant, this is what it means; to see what the devil is doing in the world; to keep up with him; to resist him and fight him in whatever he might be doing.

I stayed up all night praying and weeping before the Lord. I was interceding for the city, for the girl and for myself. I was living in a city that had a great need and I was not helping to meet that need. I was so busy putting up our church building and doing my own thing that I was not involved in the tragedy of Bilibid. The next morning God spoke to me and told me to go to that prison and pray for the demonized girl. I did not want to go, but God assured me that He had no one else in the city to send. Therefore I went.

Because I was a foreigner in the Philippines, I went to the mayor’s office and asked permission to see Clarita. He granted me his permission but warned me that several people had been injured by the girl and that two had been cursed and were dead. I went with the understanding that I would not sue the government if I was hurt, and that I would not complain if mistreated.

When I arrived at the prison, the head doctor of six physicians, Dr. Lara, was skeptical of this foreign minister, but he finally permitted me to see the girl.

Clarita was brought into a special room where I was waiting with a large group of news reporters, foreign members of the press, university professors, and medical doctors, who had been invited by Dr. Lara.

As Clarita was being led into the room, she looked at them and said nothing, but when she saw me she screamed violently: ‘I hate you!’ Instantly I inserted: ‘I know you hate me. I have come to cast you out’.

That was the beginning of the confrontation. There was a raging battle with the girl blaspheming God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Her eyes were burning coals of fire and full of hate. I commanded the evil spirit to loose her. After a three-day confrontation with the devil in her, the miracle of God came upon her. She relaxed, smiled, and said: ‘He’s gone’.

‘Where did he go?’ I asked.

‘He went out that way’, she replied. ‘He’s gone’.

The local newspapers, magazines and radio told the story. One headline read: ‘He dies; the devil is dead!’ Another one said: ‘Devil loses round one’.

Dr. Lara became so excited he took me over to the office of the mayor. When he walked into the office, he said: ‘My God, mayor. The devil is dead’.

I said: ‘Mr. Mayor, Dr. Lara may be a good doctor, but he’s a poor theologian. The devil is not dead. The girl I came and talked to you about yesterday is healed’.

Papal Conclave How Popes Are Chosen—Exerpted from Catholic Update, “The Future of the Papacy”

When the pope dies, the cardinals are summoned to Rome by the dean of the college of cardinals for the conclave that will elect the new pope.The word conclave (Latin, cum + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates the place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals remain until a new pope is elected. It is also used to designate the actual gathering of the cardinals.

Before the conclave: The cardinals may discuss the upcoming election with one another. The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

The actual conclave: After the celebration of Mass, the cardinal dean presides over the preliminary sessions, where procedures regulated by canon law are clarified. Then all others are dismissed and the cardinals are sealed in the Sistine Chapel where the voting takes place, every morning and afternoon.

Until recently a two-thirds majority plus one was required for election. After his election Pope John Paul II changed this. Now if there is no conclusive vote after 30 ballots, an absolute majority suffices. [This means that if a candidate gets a majority on the first or second ballot, his supporters need only wait till 30 ballots have been cast. He will then be elected on the 31^st ballot.]

For each ballot, the cardinals are given rectangular cards with Eligo in summum pontificem ("I elect as supreme pontiff") printed at the top. Each cardinal prints the name of his choice. One by one in order of seniority they approach the altar where there is a chalice with a paten on top. They place the ballot (folded down the middle) on the paten, then drop it into the cup.After each voting the ballots are burned. Special chemicals are added to make the smoke white or black. To people eagerly waiting outside, black smoke signifies an inconclusive vote. White smoke announces that a pope has been elected.The cardinals may elect whomever they wish, as long as the person is a baptized male. There have been occasions in the past when laymen were elected. After their election they had to be ordained priest and bishop. The one elected is asked if he accepts. The moment he accepts he is pope and, if he is a bishop, he is Bishop of Rome. If he is not a bishop he is immediately ordained by the dean of the college. The cardinals individually pledge their support to the new pope. The cardinal dean asks the pope what name he chooses. Then the oldest member of the college announces the choice to the city of Rome and to the world.

And the Holy Father cannot go turn his back on  his magisterium,” Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with Jews said in a statement to Italian Religious Information Service SIR. The statement was made ahead of the Day for Jewish-Christian dialogue which will be celebrated in Italy on 17 January. The Swiss cardinal responded openly to the “concerns” triggered by the dialogue process between the Holy See and the Lefebvrians of the Society of St. Pius X.

“Jews – the cardinal said – are our elder brothers: Christians and Jews are inseparable, especially in Benedict XVI’s vision of the unity between the Two Testaments. This is the clear vision also in light of the Second Vatican Council Declaration “Nostra Aetate”. The Catholic Church is in no doubt about the value this declaration still has today. The only group that does not accept it are the Lefebvrians. As such, they do not accept ecumenical dialogue, relations with Jews or religious freedom. But these are central to the Holy Father’s teaching and if a group does not accept the Council and does not accept a magisterium, they need to ask themselves how they see themselves as Catholic. This is the fundamental problem.”

The cardinal went on to recall what Fr. Lombardi had said regarding some remarks made by the head of the Society of St. Pius X, Bishop Fellay. “Any form of anti-Semitism is contrary to Christianity and the Catholic Church must do all that is in its power to stop this.”

To progressive Canadian Catholics, reform of their church ultimately means ordination of women, married priests and freedom of birth control.None of these will be on the table when their next pope is chosen next month.In a church that has become so deeply conservative, hope of revisiting such fundamental aspects of Catholic dogma and practice is impossible.Reformers’ objectives are instead more subtle and less publicly controversial. More realistic, they say — if still deeply challenging to today’s church.They want a pope who is a listener, as well as a leader. They want a church that is more collegial — less a monarchy, more a democracy.“Any of these questions — expanding roles for women, ordaining married men — for these things to change, the style of the church’s governance has to change,” says Catherine Clifford, professor and vice-dean in the faculty of theology at Saint Paul University in Ottawa.“We have to create spaces for dialogue. We don’t have to look upon people as being disloyal Catholics for raising these questions.”

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday he was stepping down after nearly eight years as Supreme Pontiff and leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.Clifford hopes that when the cardinals gather in their secret conclave, expected in mid-March, they will elect a pope with a different style of leadership: “One far more consultative, with more space for the voices and experiences of Catholics from different regions of the world . . .“Not everything can be decided at the centre.”That concern has become more critical as the population of Catholics has more than doubled in the last five decades and the church has become more global. The Southern Hemisphere is home to two-thirds of the world’s Catholics. By 2050, it’s expected that 75 per cent of Catholics will live there.No longer centred in Europe, it’s a different church from the early 1950s, when an archbishop named Angelo Roncalli — who would become the much loved Pope John XXIII — was reading a book on reform of the church. “Reform of the church; is such a thing possible?” he mused to a visitor even then.In the Second Vatican Council, which John XXIII called in 1962, the values of consultation and collegiality were at the heart of his appeal for renewal of the church in the modern world. For some Catholics, the changes brought fresh thinking and vitality, though the speed of change has been slow and even 50 years on, there is still much to be done. For others, the old ways were better. Discord and power struggles ensued.Now, says Clifford, the church is in a new social and historical context and demands new questions: “Is the present form of the priesthood adequate? Are we receiving all the gifts women and lay people have to bring to the service of the church? Is there a space to think about human sexuality in a different way? What is the relationship between Christianity and other religions? “But trying to think about them in new ways is often greeted with suspicion. These questions are not just raised by radical theologians but also by bishops who are responsible pastors. These questions are being raised by very faithful Catholics.”Even in his last public homily on Ash Wednesday, Benedict did not appear to see faithfulness in those seeking “new ways.” He seemed to view their aspirations as ruptures. He decried “sins against the unity of the Church, of the divisions in the body of the Church.” He made a plea for those indifferent or distanced from the faith to overcome “individualism and rivalry.”Despite this language from the outgoing Benedict, Mary Ellen Chown, of the Catholic Network for Women’s Equality, says his departure offers a genuine chance to renew the church. “There’s always room for hope,” she says.“If the new leader takes a pastoral tone as John XXIII did, that we, with the bishops and the Pope, form the people of God, if you walk with people and are close, I think reform comes. The focus is relational, not institutional. But that’s hard to do at the higher levels.”It was under Benedict that the Vatican announced that attempted ordination of women was a grave crime. “To me that was the desperate power grab of a male hierarchy afraid of the possibility for change,” Chown says.In a statement sent this week, the women’s network catalogued some of the low points of Benedict’s tenure as they affected women in the church. “Under Pope Benedict’s leadership we have witnessed the criminalization of those who support women’s ordination, an about-face on the use of inclusive language in the English mass, the bullying of nuns in the United States and the arbitrary removal of the woman who directed the largest Catholic aid organization in the world.”The change in the language in the New Roman Missal was a return to the old ways, she says. One new prayer uses the phrase “us men.”“That wouldn’t include me,” notes Chown.The women’s network sent a letter in January to Canadian bishops expressing its dismay with the language changes, and included a petition of 400 names. The Missal’s language, meant to be more courtly and reverential, also reflected a “theological shift” emphasizing sinfulness and unworthiness before a “monarchical God,” the petition said.These critiques, Chown notes, do not come from men-hating, Pope-bashing women. “They are deeply rooted in the Gospel and they are the reason I stay Catholic.”Last year the Vatican censured the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a group that represents about 80 per cent of U.S. Catholic nuns, charging the group with following a “radical feminist” agenda and daring to disagree with or challenge bishops. It assigned a panel of bishops to review and overhaul the organization.“The way in which the Vatican and female religious orders have engaged each other in the last five years damaged the perspective of the church as a church that serves the poor, which has been one of the primary works of women religious in the U.S.,” says Mark McGowan, a professor at the University of Toronto. “We always have to remember that that these are the women who stayed, after the exodus of many from religious orders after Vatican II.”But without the censure, American nuns wouldn’t have had the high-profile “Nuns on the Bus” tour, which travelled through some U.S. states last summer to condemn Republican budget proposals they said favoured rich Americans over poor.

The censure was painful, admits Sister Simone Campbell, head of Network, a U.S. social justice lobby group. But American Catholics were also animated.“I believe the Holy Spirit is alive and well making mischief,” says Campbell. “We found so many people hungry for a faith that is more about inclusion and lifting the needs of those at the margins of society. So many people told me they used to be Catholic and this is restoring their faith.”With that as a backdrop, Campbell hopes when the cardinals elect a new leader, they choose someone “who can really be a shepherd, who can care for the flock, not be a rigid, militarist type.”

She says, looking back on the last three decades of papal leadership, that Pope John Paul II came out of a culture that “feared the West” while Pope Benedict was an academic, with brief experience as a pastor.

“What I’ve been realizing is the real challenge is the culture of the monarchy. The European model of church is clashing with our culture of democracy in North America.”McGowan, a religious historian and co-coordinator of the University of Toronto's Book and Media Studies program, says cardinals next month will be looking for, among other things, stability and obedience.Such a candidate may not be hard to find. Benedict appointed 67 of the 117 cardinals who are younger than 80 and eligible to vote.“During his time in office he has ordained so many conservative cardinals that amongst them there is hardly a single person to be found who could lead the church out of its multifaceted crisis,” theologian Hans Kung told the Guardian.

In an October interview with the newspaper, Kung said the only way to reform the church is from the bottom up. Priests and others in responsible positions need to stop being “so subservient” and organize themselves to stand up and “say there are certain things that they simply will not put up with any more.”The new pope will also have to face the crisis of sexual abuse of children by priests. Critics say Benedict failed to repair or truly help victims despite his frequent apologies. It’s been a catastrophe in many parts of the world, but still the culture of secrecy remains intact, they say.“Benedict’s words rang hollow. He spoke as a shocked bystander, as if he had just stumbled upon the abuse crisis,” Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of Bishop Accountability, a U.S. organization that documents sexual abuse by priests, wrote in a statement this week. “But more than anyone in the Vatican, he knew about the damage done to innocent children.”The flight of Catholics from the European and North American church should also be a focus for the new pope, McGowan says. Some 180,000 German Catholics have abandoned the church, leaving it with about the same numbers it had in 1945. Religious participation in Ireland is about 50 per cent compared to 90 per cent in the 1970s, he adds.In Quebec, only 10 per cent of Catholics are part of church life. Church buildings are being sold by the score. “This is a problem in Quebec, once the most Catholic of Catholic societies in the world, that is not going away.”More also needs to be done to promote lay people into responsible positions, says Rev. Jacques Monet, historian to the Jesuit Archive in Canada. “A lot has been done, but not nearly enough.”If lay people rose to positions of influence, it’s not impossible that in the future lay cardinals could be among those who elect the pope, he muses. It’s not a new practice; it was done until about the 19th century. “Then you would have the values (of) lay people whose experience of Christianity is different than the clerical.”Similarly, the day-to-day governance of the Vatican — itself beset by financial scandals — needs to reflect more the global makeup of today’s church, says Monet. Since Rome is the base, most Vatican bureaucrats are Italian, predictable in their adherence to established ways. “But if you change and have many cultures and languages, you will have different proposals and points of view.”

Israel has been holding secret negotiations with the Hamas terror movement since the end of its Operation Pillar of Defense, Channel 2 News reported on Friday.According to the report, the Egyptian-mediated talks are being held as part of the ceasefire reached between the sides at the end of counterterrorism operation in November and which said that both sides will refrain from attacking one another and the sides will work to reach understandings.Channel 2 News indicated that an Israeli delegation that arrived in Cairo on Thursday came to Egypt for the purpose of holding talks with Hamas, through Egyptian mediators.Until now, the negotiations have been conducted under a veil of secrecy, said the report, which added that according to the understandings reached between the sides, Israel will agree that the Rafiah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt be opened for the passage of commercial goods and construction materials.As well, one of the items being discussed in the talks between Israel and Hamas is to open the border crossings for the transfer of agricultural materials. At the same time, reports in the Arab media have indicated that one of the issues around which the meetings revolve is the terrorist prisoners being held in Israeli prisons.Despite the constant claims by Gaza’s terrorist rulers that Israel is imposing a “siege” on the region, Israel has consistently allowed humanitarian aid into Gaza, approving internationally funded and monitored projects in the region. Since 2011, 235 projects have been approved. In September 2012 alone, 16 new projects were approved.
Israel has also supported the private sector in Gaza, and has approved the transfer of raw materials for private sector construction, including roof tiles, building stones, dry wall, mosaics, adhesives, plaster, etc.
Hamas, however, has not been satisfied with the aid it receives from Israel and has been trying to punish the residents of Gaza by attempting to reduce the scope of Israeli goods entering the region.With Israel tightly supervising the materials which enter Gaza through its border crossings and with the borders with Egypt being closed, Hamas has smuggled in materials, including weapons and explosives, through underground tunnels which connect between Gaza and Egypt.The terror group is making at least a million dollars a day in “tax” money from Gaza smugglers, providing “protection” to smugglers and collecting payments for the service, then using the smugglers to order goods for their own use.(Arutz Sheva’s North American Desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. A four-man Israeli security delegation arrived in Cairo on Thursday afternoon, the Jordanian-based Al Bawaba website reported.According to the report, the delegation will take part in talks about the peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.The members of the delegation, who flew in using Israeli military aircraft, were received by members of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, according to Al Bawaba, which cited a report in the Egyptian Al Masreyoon website.Official sources who spoke to Al Masreyoon said the visit by the Israelis would last no more than a few hours.The talks will be chaired by the Egyptian intelligence chief, Mohamed Raafat Shehata, the report indicated, and will include discussions of the alleged recent Israeli airstrike in Syria and the deteriorating security situation in the Sinai Peninsula.

Lawmakers aim to bridge gap on bank capital regime

BRUSSELS - EU lawmakers are hoping to resolve their differences on legislation toughening bank capital rules to prevent a repeat of the 2007-9 financial crisis.
MEPs will hold their next trialogue negotiations with the Irish presidency on Tuesday (February 19) in a bid to secure agreement on the Capital Requirements directive (CRD IV).The legislation, which establishes the minimum levels of core capital held on the balance sheets of European banks, tackles what many regard as the core of the financial crisis. It also includes rules limiting bank bonus payments.Othmar Karas, the Austrian centre-right MEP responsible for piloting the legislation through Parliament, told reporters earlier this week that "political agreements" had been reached on all of the main issues in the bill and indicated that member states would be responsible for any new delays.But others have downplayed the prospect of a swift agreement. Sharon Bowles, the Liberal chair of the Economic committee, commented that she was "not sure we will get a deal on Tuesday," while a national official involved in the talks told this website he was "confident there won't be a deal."The EU and US have already missed the original January deadline to begin the implementation of Basel III, but are expected to apply the regime from January 2014.Speaking in Washington on Thursday (14 February), Internal market commissioner Michel Barnier told reporters that he and US Federal Reserve Governor Daniel Tarullo had "agreed it was essential that effective implementation of the new regulatory framework should be done as soon as possible".MEPs are set to secure the agreement of governments to put in place a strict cap on bankers' bonuses. However, officials have suggested that a possible trade-off could involve ministers accepting the parliament's timeline on short-term liquidity in exchange for member states' stance on supervision.The Irish presidency plans to put the deal to EU finance ministers on 5 March, with a view to MEPs voting on the package at either the March or April plenary sessions.

G20 set to dilute big powers' demands on currencies

(Reuters) - The Group of 20 nations will not single out Japan over the weak yen and will disregard a call from G7 powers to refrain from using economic policy to target exchange rates, according to a text drafted for finance leaders.
A G20 delegate who has seen the communique - prepared by finance officials for their bosses - also said it would make no direct mention of new debt-cutting targets, something Germany is pressing for but which the United States wanted struck out.
If adopted by G20 finance ministers and central bankers meeting in Moscow on Friday and Saturday, Japan will escape any censure for its expansionary policies which have driven the yen lower and drawn demands for action from some quarters.
"There will not be a heavy clash about currencies in the end, because nobody can risk such a negative signal," said another G20 delegation source.
The currency market was thrown into turmoil this week after the Group of Seven - the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Canada and Italy - issued a joint statement stating that domestic economic policy must not be used to target currencies, which must remain determined by the market.
Tokyo said that reflected agreement that its bold monetary and fiscal policies were appropriate but the show of unity was shattered by off-the-record briefings critical of Japan.
The G20 draft merely sticks to previous language on the need to avoid excessive currency volatility, the delegate said.
The yen has fallen by around 20 percent since November. Having firmed earlier on Friday, it turned tail and dropped about 0.6 percent against the dollar and euro in response to the communique details.
"Although this week has been marked by volatility surrounding G7 and G20, it appears the path to currency weakness will remain intact," said Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo in New York.
One senior G20 source said any reference to targeting exchange rates was also not acceptable to China, which is the world's No.2 economy and holds much of its $3.3 trillion in foreign reserves in U.S. Treasury bonds.
After a working dinner, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said he had heard no criticism of his country's policies.
"We explained our stance and other countries voiced no such opinions as approval or objection," Aso told reporters. "We stick to our policy, and consequently it (the yen weakening) happened. But that was not our target. Our target is getting out of recession and deflation."
"NO CURRENCY WAR"
Officials lined up to pour cold water on talk of a currency war where countries indulge in competitive devaluations.
European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said recent sparring over currencies was "inappropriate, fruitless and self-defeating" and U.S. Treasury official Lael Brainard warned against "loose talk".
France has been a lone voice calling for euro exchange rate targets. Draghi said the currency was trading in line with long-term averages, a point endorsed by International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde.
"The current talk of currency wars is overblown," she told the G20 ministers and central bankers. "There is no major deviation from fair value of major currencies."
Other policymakers in Moscow said Japan's aggressive fiscal and monetary expansion aimed at raising the inflation rate to 2 percent was to be welcomed if it boosted growth.
Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan indicated support for Japan's monetary policy saying "everybody's got a stake" in its ability to foster growth.
And Indonesia, one of the rising Asia-Pacific economies, said it was also less concerned about the exchange rate of the yen than about Japanese recovery.
"If the Japanese increase their domestic demand it will help Indonesia, especially from the export side," said Hartadi Sarwono, deputy central bank governor.
Others have noted that the United States has created vast amounts of new money just as the Bank of Japan has, although Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the U.S. central bank was acting in line with the G7 statement, "using domestic policy tools to advance domestic objectives".
GROWTH VS AUSTERITY
The meeting in Moscow of ministers from the G20 nations, which account for 90 percent of the world's gross domestic product and two-thirds of its population, also looked set to lay bare differences over the balance between growth and austerity policies.
The draft communique reflected a row brewing between Europe and the United States over extending a promise to reduce budget deficits beyond 2016. A pact struck in Toronto in 2010 will expire this year if leaders fail to agree to extend it at a G20 summit of leaders in St Petersburg in September.
The G20 put together a huge financial backstop to halt a market meltdown in 2009 but has failed to reach those heights since. At successive meetings, Germany has pressed the United States and others to do more to tackle their debts. Washington in turn has urged Berlin to do more to increase demand.
"It's very important to calibrate the pace of fiscal consolidation," Brainard said. "It's ... important to see demand in the euro area and some of that must take place through internal rebalancing."
There will be no direct mention of fiscal targets, in response to U.S. pressure, reflecting its focus on running expansive policies until unemployment falls, the G20 delegate said.
Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, addressing the working dinner, said the growth versus austerity debate represented a "false dichotomy" that should not preclude action to boost jobs and growth now while targeting balanced budgets later.

Exclusive: North Korea tells China of preparations for fresh nuclear test - source

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea has told its key ally, China, that it is prepared to stage one or even two more nuclear tests this year in an effort to force the United States into diplomatic talks, said a source with direct knowledge of the message.Further tests could also be accompanied this year by another rocket launch, said the source, who has direct access to the top levels of government in both Beijing and Pyongyang.North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday, drawing global condemnation and a stern warning from the United States that it was a threat and a provocation."It's all ready. A fourth and fifth nuclear test and a rocket launch could be conducted soon, possibly this year," the source said, adding that the fourth nuclear test would be much larger than the third, at an equivalent of 10 kilotons of TNT.
The tests will be undertaken, the source said, unless Washington holds talks with North Korea and abandons its policy of what Pyongyang sees as attempts at regime change.North Korea also reiterated its long-standing desire for the United States to sign a final peace agreement with it and establish diplomatic relations, he said. North Korea remains technically at war with both the United States and South Korea after the Korean war ended in 1953 with a truceIn Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland urged North Korea to "refrain from additional provocative actions that would violate its international obligations" under three different sets of U.N. NORTH 'NOT AFRAID' OF SANCTIONS
President Barack Obama pledged after this week's nuclear test "to lead the world in taking firm action in response to these threats" and diplomats at the U.N. Security Council have already started discussing potential new sanctions.North Korea has said the test was a reaction to "U.S. hostility" following its December rocket launch. Critics say the rocket launch was aimed at developing technology for an intercontinental ballistic missile"(North) Korea is not afraid of (further) sanctions," the source said. "It is like watching the same movie over and over again," said Lee Woo-young, a professor at Seoul's University of North Korean Studies.
