The
King of Jerusalem[1] was the supreme ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem,
the Crusader state founded by Christian princes in 1099 when the First
Crusade took the city.Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of the
Kingdom of Jerusalem, himself refused the title of king, and instead
chose the title "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre". Thus, the title of
king was only introduced for his successor, King Baldwin I in 1100. The
city of Jerusalem was lost in 1187, but the Kingdom of Jerusalem
survived (also known as the "Second Kingdom of Jerusalem"), moving its
capital to Acre in 1191. The city of Jerusalem was re-captured in the
Sixth Crusade, during 1229–39 and 1241–44. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was
finally dissolved with the fall of Acre and the end of the Crusades in
the Holy Land in 1291.After the Crusader States ceased to exist, the
title of King of Jerusalem was claimed by a number of European noble
houses descended from the kings of Cyprus or the kings of Naples. The
(purely ceremonial) title of King of Jerusalem is currently used by
Felipe VI of Spain. It was claimed by Otto von Habsburg as Habsburg
pretender, and by the kings of Italy until 1946.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell
are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under
falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord
GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a
precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not
make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to
the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the
waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with
death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not
stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be
trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall
take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by

DR SAMUEL DOCTORIANS VISION - SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then
I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used
in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel
and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few
split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have
refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill
one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the
Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of
Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full
of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear
weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere.
Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these
words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said,
"The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of
God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The
angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified,
protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water
shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men
will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the
United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the
Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the
sickle shall reap the harvest.

Ireland to open embassy in Ramallah-Spain, Norway,
Ireland formally recognize Palestinian state; rift with Israel
widens-Israel slams Madrid, accuses it of ‘being complicit in inciting
genocide against Jews and war crimes’; Spanish PM recognizes state in a
linked West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem-By AP and ToI Staff Today,
2:53 pm-TUE MAY 28,24
BARCELONA, Spain — Spain, Norway and
Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday in a
coordinated effort by the three Western European nations.Israel slammed
the diplomatic move, which adds to international pressure on Tel Aviv as
it wages war against Hamas after the terror group launched a shock
assault from Gaza on October 7.Spanish government spokesperson Pilar
Alegria said the cabinet had “adopted an important decision to recognize
a Palestinian state,” which had “one objective: to help Israelis and
Palestinians achieve peace.”Earlier, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said
the Spanish Cabinet would take the move.“This is a historic decision
that has a single goal, and that is to help Israelis and Palestinians
achieve peace,” Sánchez, standing at the gates of the prime minister’s
palace in Madrid, said during a televised speech.Foreign Minister Israel
Katz lashed out at Spain on X, saying Sánchez’s government was “being
complicit in inciting genocide against Jews and war crimes.”“Khamenei,
Sinwar, and deputy PM Yolanda Diaz call for the elimination of Israel
and for the establishment of an Islamic Palestinian terror state from
the river to the sea,” wrote Katz on X.Diaz ended a speech last week
with the slogan “from the river to the sea Palestine will be free,” and
has said since it was an endorsement of the two-state solution.
“Sanchez, when you don’t fire your deputy and declare recognition of a
Palestinian state — you are a partner to incitement to the genocide of
Jews and to war crimes,” Katz said.Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen
Barth Eide said in a statement that “for more than 30 years, Norway has
been one of the strongest advocates for a Palestinian state. Today, when
Norway officially recognizes Palestine as a state, is a milestone in
the relationship between Norway and Palestine.”Ireland also officially
recognized a Palestinian state.“The Government recognizes Palestine as a
sovereign and independent state and agreed to establish full diplomatic
relations between Dublin and Ramallah,” the statement said after a
cabinet vote-“An Ambassador of Ireland to the State of Palestine will be
appointed along with a full Embassy of Ireland in Ramallah.”Irish prime
minister Simon Harris the move was about keeping hope for peace
alive.“This decision of Ireland is about keeping hope alive. It is about
believing that a two-state solution is the only way for Israel and
Palestine to live side by side in peace and security,” he said in the
statement.“I again call on Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel to listen
to the world and stop the humanitarian catastrophe we are seeing in
Gaza.”While dozens of countries have recognized a Palestinian state,
none of the major Western powers has done so. Still, the addition of
three European countries to the group represents a victory for
Palestinian efforts in the world of public opinion.Relations between the
EU and Israel have nosedived with the diplomatic recognitions by two EU
members, and Madrid insisting on Monday that the EU should take
measures against Israel for its continued offensive in southern Gaza’s
city of Rafah. After Monday’s meeting of EU foreign ministers, Irish
Foreign Minister Micheál Martin said “for the first time at an EU
meeting, in a real way, I have seen a significant discussion on
sanctions” for Israel.Norway, which is not an EU member but often aligns
its foreign policy with the bloc, handed diplomatic papers to the
Palestinian government over the weekend ahead of its formal
recognition. At the same time, the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep
Borrell threw his weight behind the International Criminal Court, whose
prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu as well as leaders of the Hamas terror group. The formal
declaration and resulting diplomatic dispute come over seven months into
a grinding war waged by Israel against Hamas in Gaza following the
October 7 Hamas-led attack in which terrorists stormed across the Gaza
border into Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 252
hostages. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 36,000 people
in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so
far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified at
hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000
terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says
it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Last week’s
joint announcement by Spain, Ireland and Norway triggered an angry
response from Israeli authorities, who summoned the countries’
ambassadors in Tel Aviv to the Foreign Ministry, where they were shown
videos of the October 7 Hamas attack and abductions. Some 140 countries —
more than two-thirds of the United Nations — recognize a Palestinian
state. The addition of three Western European countries to that group
may put pressure on EU heavyweights France and Germany to rethink their
position.Slovenia’s Prime Minister Robert Golob said Monday his
government will decide on the recognition of a Palestinian state on
Thursday and forward its decision to parliament for final approval. The
United States and Britain, among others, back the idea of an independent
Palestinian state alongside Israel but say it should come as part of a
negotiated settlement. Netanyahu’s government says the conflict can only
be resolved through direct negotiations. In his speech on Tuesday,
Sánchez said that the recognition of a Palestinian state was “a decision
that we do not adopt against anyone, least of all against Israel, a
friendly people whom we respect, whom we appreciate and with whom we
want to have the best possible relationship.”The Socialist leader, who
announced his country’s decision before parliament last week, has spent
months touring European and Middle Eastern countries, including stops in
Oslo and Dublin, to garner support for the recognition of a Palestinian
state and a cease-fire in Gaza.He called for a permanent ceasefire, for
stepping up humanitarian aid into Gaza and for the release of the
hostages that Hamas has held since the October 7 attack that triggered
Israel’s response.Sánchez said that the move was to back the beleaguered
Palestinian Authority, which was ousted from Gaza in a bloody coup by
Hamas in 2007. He laid out his vision for a state ruled by the
Palestinian Authority that must connect the West Bank and Gaza via a
corridor with East Jerusalem as its capital.Israel has annexed East
Jerusalem and considers the entire city its capital.Norway’s Barth Eide
added that “it is regrettable that the Israeli government shows no signs
of engaging constructively.“The recognition is a strong expression of
support for moderate forces in both countries,” Norway’s top diplomat
said. The Western-backed Palestinian Authority administers parts of the
West Bank, cooperates with Israel on security matters and favors a
negotiated two-state solution. The Palestinians have long sought an
independent state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories
Israel captured in the 1967 Six Day War in which neighboring Arab
countries tried to obliterate the Jewish state. The idea of a land
corridor linking Gaza and the West Bank through Israel was discussed in
previous rounds of peace talks, but no serious or substantive peace
negotiations have been held in over 15 years.“We will not recognize
changes in the 1967 border lines other than those agreed to by the
parties,” Sánchez added.“Furthermore, this decision reflects our
absolute rejection of Hamas, a terrorist organization who is against the
two-state solution,” Sánchez said. “From the outset, Spain has strongly
condemned the terrorist attacks of Oct. 7. This clear condemnation is
the resounding expression of our steadfast commitment in the fight
against terrorism. I would like to underline that starting tomorrow we
would focus all our efforts to implement the two state solution and make
it a reality.”

Irish FM says EU mulling sanctions
on Israel if it defies ICJ ruling on Rafah-Dublin’s top diplomat also
says sanctions may be placed on officials who aid violent West Bank
settlers, in comments ahead of move to officially recognize Palestinian
state-By ToI Staff Today, 11:17 am-MAY 28,24
Irish Foreign
Minister Micheál Martin said Monday that he and his European Union
counterparts had a “significant” discussion about the possibility of
levying sanctions on Israel if it fails to comply with international
humanitarian law.“For the first time at an EU meeting, in a real way,
I’ve seen significant discussion on sanctions and ‘what if,’” Martin
told reporters following a meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council
in Brussels. He qualified that there is “some distance between people
articulating the need for a sanctions-based approach if Israel does not
comply with the ICJ’s ruling … to agreement in the Council meeting,
given all of the different perspectives there.”The Irish foreign
minister told reporters that the discussion focused on provisional
orders issued by the International Court of Justice last week calling on
Israel to halt military operations in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah
that would risk the destruction of the civilian population sheltering
there.Martin was quoted as saying that the EU foreign ministers agreed
that Israel should “adhere to those provisional orders… and cease its
military operations in Rafah.”While Martin and the EU ministers appear
to interpret the ruling as a definitive call for Israel to halt all
military activity in Rafah, Israel says that is not the case, pointing
to the arguments of four ICJ justices that the key operative clause in
the ruling does not require that Israel immediately halt all operations
there, but rather that it specifically halt military operations that
“could bring about physical destruction in whole or in part” of the
Palestinians.Martin did not give details on the types of sanctions
discussed by the EU diplomats.Irish news outlet RTE quoted Martin as
saying that a number of foreign ministers had also raised the
possibility of sanctions against Israeli officials who were aiding and
abetting violent West Bank settlers. So far, the United States, Canada,
the United Kingdom, France, and the European Union have sanctioned only
the violent settlers themselves in recent months, amid a surge of
incidents since October 7, and a 15-year high in 2023.The EU meeting
followed Israeli airstrikes near Rafah on Sunday night that drew
outraged reactions from Palestinians and around the world, with Hamas
health authorities reporting that 45 people were killed and dozens
injured in the attack and in an ensuing blaze in a camp housing
displaced civilians. The Israel Defense Forces said it had targeted a
Hamas compound and eliminated two commanders in the terror group’s
ranks, and that it is investigating what Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu called a “tragic mishap.”Ireland has been among the most vocal
critics of Israel over the war against Hamas. Along with Spain and
Norway, it is due to formalize their recognition of a Palestinian state
on Tuesday. The United States and some other European countries favor
reviving negotiations on resolving the conflict before recognizing a
Palestinian state. The move by Ireland, Spain, and Norway was denounced
as a “reward for terrorism” by Israel, which is waging a war in the Gaza
Strip sparked by Hamas’s shock October 7 assault, when thousands of
terrorists stormed into southern Israel to kill nearly 1,200 people and
take 252 hostages amid rampant atrocities. The Hamas-run Gaza health
ministry says more than 36,000 people in the Strip have been killed or
are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000
fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be
verified, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has
killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists
inside Israel on October 7.Two hundred and eighty-eight soldiers have
been killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid
operations along the Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor
has also been killed in the Strip.
Canada pledges temporary
visas for 5,000 Gaza residents related to citizens-In preparatory move
in case Palestinians are able to leave the Strip in the future, Canada’s
interior ministry ups original allotment from 1,000 after wide interest
in program-By Reuters and ToI Staff 27 May 2024, 10:11 pm
Canada
announced on Monday that it will grant temporary visas to 5,000 Gaza
residents under a special program for relatives of Canadian living in
the war-torn Palestinian enclave, a preparatory move in case they are
able to leave in the future. That figure is an increase from the 1,000
temporary resident visas allotted under a special program for Gaza
announced in December, the Canadian immigration ministry said in a
statement, adding that many people had expressed interest.“While
movement out of Gaza is not currently possible, the situation may change
at any time. With this cap increase, we will be ready to help more
people as the situation evolves,” Canadian Immigration Minister Marc
Miller said. The minister had previously said that leaving Gaza is
extremely difficult and dependent on approval from Israel.Canada has
been sharing the names of Gaza residents who have passed preliminary
screening to local authorities to secure their exit, Miller said. Israel
and Egypt are important to the program’s efforts toward reuniting
families in Canada, he added. There was no immediate comment from Israel
or Egypt regarding Canada’s announcement.A spokesperson for Miller said
448 Gazans had been issued a temporary visa, including 254 under a
public policy, and that 41 have arrived in Canada so far.The temporary
visas are valid for three years after entering the country, according to
the Canadian government website. The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas’s
October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the
border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and
seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, amid acts of brutality and
sexual assault.Vowing to destroy Hamas’s military and governance
capabilities in Gaza and bring the hostages home, Israel launched a
wide-scale operation in the Strip which is ongoing. The Hamas-run Gaza
health ministry says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been
killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some
24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The tolls, which
cannot be verified, include some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it
has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists
inside Israel on October 7.An estimated 1.7 million people, more than
75% of Gaza’s population, have been displaced, according to the UN
Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.A total of 288 IDF soldiers have been
killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and during operations
along the Gaza border, as well as a acivilian Defense Ministry
contractor.
UN nuclear watchdog says Iran expanding stockpile of
near-weapons grade uranium-Tehran has not reconsidered barring of IAEA’s
most experienced inspectors, confidential report says, as talks with
Islamic Republic falter after president’s fatal crash-By STEPHANIE
LIECHTENSTEIN 27 May 2024, 9:00 pm
VIENNA, Austria (AP) — Iran
has further increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near
weapons-grade levels, a confidential report by the United Nations’
nuclear watchdog said Monday. The report, seen by The Associated Press,
said Iran now has 142.1 kilograms (313.2 pounds) of uranium enriched up
to 60% — an increase of 20.6 kilograms (45.4 pounds) since the last
report in February. Uranium enriched at 60% purity is just a short,
technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.According to the
report, Iran’s overall stockpile of enriched uranium stands at 6201.3
kilograms (13671.5 pounds), which represents an increase of 675.8
kilograms (1489.8 pounds) since the last report by the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).In its current report, the IAEA also said
Tehran has not reconsidered the agency’s September 2023 decision of
barring the most experienced nuclear inspectors from monitoring its
nuclear program, but added that it expected Iran “to do so in the
context of the ongoing consultations between the Agency and Iran.”The
IAEA also said that the deaths of Iran’s president and foreign minister
in a helicopter crash last week have caused a pause in the UN nuclear
watchdog’s talks with Tehran over improving cooperation. In its current
report, the IAEA said that Iran suggested in a letter dated May 21 that
discussions related to the cooperation between the IAEA and Iran “be
continued in Tehran on an appropriate date that will be mutually agreed
upon.”Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful, but the
IAEA chief, Rafael Mariano Grossi, has already warned that the Islamic
Republic has enough uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels to
make “several” nuclear bombs if Tehran were to choose to do so. He has
acknowledged that the agency cannot guarantee that none of Iran’s
centrifuges has been peeled away for clandestine enrichment.Iran and the
nuclear watchdog are still negotiating over how to implement a deal
struck last year to expand inspections of the Islamic Republic’s rapidly
advancing atomic program. The IAEA’s acknowledgment shows the challenges
his inspectors face, years after the collapse of Tehran’s nuclear deal
with world powers and the wider tensions gripping the Mideast over the
ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Ship struck, taking on water in Red Sea
after presumed Houthi attack-Few details are immediately available, but
a Marshall Islands-flagged ship heading to the UAE corresponds to the
location of the incident-By AP and ToI Staff Today, 3:59 pm-MAY 28,24
DUBAI,
United Arab Emirates — A ship came under attack Tuesday in the Red Sea
off the coast of Yemen, with a private security firm saying radio
traffic suggested the vessel took on water after being struck. No group
immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion immediately fell on
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have launched a campaign of attacks on
international shipping in the name of solidarity with Palestinians in
Gaza amid Israel’s war with the Hamas terror group.Few further details
were immediately available about the Tuesday attack, which was reported
by the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations
center. It happened off the port city of Hodeida in the southern Red
Sea, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that links it to the Gulf of Aden. The
private security firm Ambrey said the vessel reported by radio of
having “sustained damage to the cargo hold and was taking on water.” It
said it had been targeted in a missile attack. The location of the attack
corresponded to the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier Laax. The
vessel reported being heading to Fujairah in the United Arab
Emirates. The Laax is managed by the Grehel Ship Management of Piraeus,
Greece. A man who answered the phone at Grehel declined to answer
questions about the attack and an emailed request for comment was not
returned. The Houthis, an Islamist militia backed by Iran that controls
large swathes of Yemen, have launched more than 50 attacks, seized one
vessel, and sunk another since November, according to the United States
Maritime Administration.US and allied forces have responded with
airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen as well as interceptions of Houthi
drones and missiles. An international coalition began to send limited
forces into the Red Sea in December in an effort to secure
shipping.Speaking Tuesday in Dubai, the prime minister of Yemen’s
exiled, internationally recognized government urged the world to see
past the Houthis’ claims of backing the Palestinians through their
attacks.“The Houthis’ exploitation of a very just cause such as the
cause of our people in Palestine and what is happening in Gaza is to
escape the benefits of peace and lead us to major complications that
exist,” Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak told the Arab Media Forum.“Peace is a
strategic choice. We must reach peace. The war must stop. This is a
must. Our people need security and stability. The region itself needs
stability.”
IDF tanks seen reaching central Rafah, as troops
operate along key Philadelphi Route-Military says it located tunnels,
weapons, and killed terrorists overnight along Gaza-Egypt border; UNRWA
says one million Palestinians have fled southern city-By Emanuel
Fabian-and ToI Staff Today, 3:59 pm-MAY 28,24
Israeli tanks
reached the center of Rafah for the first time on Tuesday, witnesses
said, as the military pressed its incursion into Gaza’s southernmost
city despite mounting international opposition to the operation. The
tanks were spotted near Al-Awda mosque, a central Rafah landmark, the
witnesses told Reuters. The Israeli military said its forces continued
to operate in the Rafah area without commenting on reported advances
into the city center.Footage from Al Jazeera posted to social media
purported to show the tanks advancing into Rafah. There was no immediate
comment from the IDF on the witness accounts, with the military saying
it will issue a statement on the Rafah operation later in the day.Amid
mounting international pressure, Israel insists that the military
operation in Rafah is crucial to its goal of eliminating Hamas and
freeing the hostages seized during the terror group’s October 7 massacre
.International criticism escalated after Israeli airstrikes near Rafah
on Sunday night, with Hamas health authorities reporting that 45 people
were killed and dozens injured in the attack and in an ensuing blaze in a
camp housing displaced civilians. The Israel Defense Forces said it had
targeted a Hamas compound and eliminated two commanders in the terror
group’s ranks, and that it is investigating what Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu called a “tragic mishap.”Amid the mounting criticism, the IDF
said Tuesday it deployed an additional brigade to southern Gaza’s
Rafah. The Bislamach Brigade — the School for Infantry Corps Professions
and Squad Commanders in peacetime — joined the 162nd Division’s other
brigades that have been operating in Rafah since earlier this month. The
military said it operated along the Philadelphi Corridor overnight,
following information on infrastructure belonging to terror groups in
the area. The IDF said troops located tunnels and weapons, and killed
numerous operatives in the Rafah area.So far amid the operation in
southern Gaza’s Rafah, the IDF has captured around 70 percent of the
Philadelphi Corridor — which runs for a total of 14 kilometers (8.7
miles) all along the Gaza-Egypt border — according to Hebrew media
reports in recent days.Egypt has repeatedly warned Israel against taking
control of the Palestinian side of the Philadelphi Corridor, saying it
would violate agreements between Jerusalem and Cairo. The move adds to
mounting tensions between the neighbors after Israeli and Egyptian
troops exchanged fire on Monday, leaving one Egyptian soldier
dead.Israeli tanks pushed towards western neighborhoods and took
positions on the Zurub hilltop in western Rafah in one of the heaviest
nights of Israeli strikes reported by residents. On Tuesday, witnesses
reported gun battles between Israeli troops and Hamas-led operatives in
the Zurub area.“The situation is very dangerous,” said one resident,
Faten Jouda, 30. “We didn’t sleep all night. There was random bombing
from all directions, including artillery shelling and air bombardment as
well as firing from aircraft.”“We saw everyone fleeing again,” she told
AFP. “We too will go now and head to Al-Mawasi because we fear for our
lives,” she said, referring to a nearby coastal area Israel has declared
a safe “humanitarian zone.”Israel has faced intense international
pressure not to launch an operation in Rafah after more than 1.4 million
Palestinians from other parts of the Strip took shelter in the
city. However, on Tuesday, the UN said that around one million
Palestinians have left the Rafah area in the past three weeks after
Israel began issuing evacuation orders early this month.“This happened
with nowhere safe to go & amidst bombardments, lack of food &
water, piles of waste & unsuitable living conditions,” the UN agency
for Palestinians charged in a post on social media platform X.The IDF
has called on residents to move to an expanded humanitarian zone in the
al-Mawasi and Khan Younis areas of southern Gaza, estimating last week
that some 950,000 Palestinians had evacuated from Rafah.Meanwhile
fighting continued in northern and central Gaza.Dozens of sites
belonging to terror groups were also destroyed during operations in
northern Gaza’s Jabaliya, according to the IDF.It said the sites in
Jabaliya include observation posts, weapon depots, and a building used
by Hamas.Several operatives were killed by troops in Jabaliya in the
past day, including a mortar-launching cell that was struck by a fighter
jet, the military said. The fighting has been described by the IDF and
some officers as “intense” and the “most violent” of the war, with many
engagements, both above ground and with Hamas operatives using tunnels.
The IDF has also recovered the bodies of seven slain hostages from
tunnels in Jabaliya. And in central Gaza, the IDF said it has expanded
operations in the Netzarim Corridor area, killing operatives and raiding
Hamas sites.War broke out on October 7 when thousands of Hamas-led
terrorists stormed southern Israeli communities and army positions,
killing around 1,200 people, taking 252 hostages, and committing other
atrocities.Israel’s government has vowed to destroy the group to keep it
from being able to launch such an assault ever again and to recover the
hostages, 121 of whom are still held in Gaza, along with two civilians
and the bodies of two soldiers held there for nearly a decade. The
ensuing military campaign has killed over 36,000 Gazans, according to
the Strip’s Hamas-run health authorities, whose numbers cannot be
verified, and do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
Israel says it has killed some 15,000 Palestinian fighters in battle, as
well as some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Two hundred
and eighty-eight soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive
against Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border. A civilian
Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip.Agencies
contributed to this report.
Cohen was Netanyahu's 'unofficial
messenger' to Bensouda-Former Mossad chief threatened ICC prosecutor
over probe into Israel, report claims-The Guardian charges that Yossi
Cohen ‘stalked’ and ‘intimidated’ former ICC chief prosecutor Fatou
Bensouda between 2017 and 2021, hinted he’d incriminate her husband-By
ToI Staff Today, 2:08 pm-MAY 28,24
Former Mossad chief Yossi
Cohen allegedly engaged in “threats and intimidation” in an attempt to
stop former International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda
from opening a war crimes investigation into Israel, according to a
report published by The Guardian on Tuesday.Citing a slew of unnamed
Israeli and ICC officials, the report claimed Cohen, who led the Mossad
in 2016-2021, had frequent and increasingly threatening communications
with Bensouda between 2017 and 2021 that amounted to “stalking,” in
which he tried to persuade her not to investigate Israel.Three unnamed
Israeli sources familiar with the matter told The Guardian that Cohen
was allegedly approved “at a high level” to act as Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu’s “unofficial messenger” and that the objective was
to compromise Bensouda or get her to comply with Israel’s demands. The
Guardian said the allegations come from part of a forthcoming
investigation by the Guardian, the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972
Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, revealing how
multiple Israel intelligence agencies ran a covert “war” against the ICC
for almost a decade. The report placed Cohen’s and Bensouda’s first
meeting in 2017 when the former Mossad chief introduced himself to the
then-prosecutor at a security conference in Munich. The next meeting, the
report continued, came in 2018 when Cohen allegedly teamed up with the
Democratic Republic of the Congo’s then-president Joseph Kabila to
ambush Bensouda in a hotel room in New York.According to the report,
Bensouda was meant to meet with Kabila but found herself in a surprise
meeting with Cohen after her staff was told to leave the room, which
sources said left her “alarmed.”Three unnamed sources told The Guardian
that after the surprise meeting, Cohen repeatedly called Bensouda on her
phone and sought meetings with her, asking her “Did you forget what I
do for a living?” when she inquired how he got her number. The sources
said Cohen initially “played good cop,” trying to build a relationship
with Bensouda, but eventually resorted to “threats and manipulation”
when that did not work. They added that after Bensouda announced in 2019
that she was ready to open an investigation into Israel, she and Cohen
had three meetings until she left her role in 2021.Cohen allegedly
initiated all three meetings, two of which led Bensouda to believe he
was threatening her and her family after he showed her covert photos of
her husband and told her an investigation would be detrimental to her
career. An unspecified number of unnamed ICC officials claimed they were
told that Cohen had said to Bensouda, “You should help us and let us
take care of you. You don’t want to be getting into things that could
compromise your security or that of your family.”The report claimed
Israel then launched a smear campaign against Bensouda that was
allegedly coordinated with then-US president Donald Trump, who imposed
visa restrictions and sanctions on her. President Joe Biden canceled the
sanctions when he took office in 2021.Responding to a request for
comment, the Prime Minister’s Office told The Guardian, “The questions
forwarded to us are replete with many false and unfounded allegations
meant to hurt the State of Israel.”The publication added that Cohen did
not respond to a request for comment and that Bensouda declined to
comment.Bensouda announced in December 2019 that her office had grounds
to open an investigation into Israeli actions in the West Bank, the Gaza
Strip, and East Jerusalem but that she was seeking a ruling on whether
the ICC had jurisdiction. In the report she published at the time, she
accused Israel of at least three disproportionate attacks, willfully
killing and injuring civilians, and intentionally attacking Red Cross
personnel and institutions during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza in
2014.In the same report, she accused Hamas and other terrorist
organizations of a string of charges including intentionally attacking
Israeli civilians, using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and
torture and inhumane treatment. At the time of her announcement, Bensouda
was accused of bias against Israel. Israeli observers noted the
significance of the timing of the investigation’s span: On June 12,
2014, Hamas terrorists kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers in
the Gush Etzion area of the West Bank. Bensouda’s investigation was set
to focus on events beginning only from the following day.More than a
year later, in February, 2021, the pre-trial chamber ruled that
“Palestine” was enough of a state to fall under the ICC’s jurisdiction,
and Bensouda began her investigation before stepping down that same
month and being replaced with the current chief prosecutor, Karim
Khan.“The fact they chose the head of Mossad to be the prime minister’s
unofficial messenger to [Bensouda] was to intimidate, by definition,”
one of the unnamed sources told the Guardian. “It failed.”Khan did not
close the investigation, but it largely lost prominence until the
Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7 with Hamas’s unprecedented
onslaught on southern Israel in which terrorists murdered some 1,200
people and seized 252 hostages.Over more than seven months of the war,
Khan investigated both Hamas’s actions during the attack and Israeli
actions throughout its ground invasion in the Gaza Strip.Last week, Khan
announced that following his investigation, he was seeking arrest
warrants for three Hamas leaders as well as Netanyahu and Defense
Minister Gallant. The warrants for the latter two, he said, were being
sought on charges of starvation as a method of warfare, willfully
causing great suffering or cruel treatment, willfully killing,
intentional attacks against civilians, extermination, and
persecution.Khan has never commented directly on Cohen’s alleged
behavior toward Bensouda but has recently said that he would “not
hesitate to prosecute attempts to impede, intimidate or improperly
influence” ICC officials.
Ex-Tehran mayor reelected as Iran
parliament speaker, cementing hardliner control-Former Revolutionary
Guard general Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf ran the capital for 12 years,
served as Ahmadinejad’s foreign minister, backed violent crackdowns on
anti-regime protests-By AP Today, 10:49 am-MAY 28,24
DUBAI,
United Arab Emirates — Iran’s parliament re-elected hardliner Mohammad
Bagher Qalibaf on Tuesday as its speaker, reaffirming its hard-right
makeup in the wake of a helicopter crash that killed the country’s
president and foreign minister.Of 287 lawmakers voting, 198 backed
Qalibaf to retain the position he first took in 2021. He initially
became speaker following a string of failed presidential bids and 12
years as the leader of Iran’s capital city, in which he built onto
Tehran’s subway and supported the construction of modern
high-rises.Many, however, know Qalibaf for his support as a
Revolutionary Guard general for a violent crackdown on Iranian
university students in 1999. He also reportedly ordered live gunfire to
be used against Iranian students in 2003 while serving as the country’s
police chief. In Tuesday’s vote, challenger Mojtaba Zonnouri, a hardline
Shiite cleric who once led parliament’s national security commission,
won 60 votes. A former foreign minister to then-hardline president
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Manouchehr Mottaki, received five votes. Qalibaf
offered no immediate remarks after the vote. The March parliament
election saw the country’s lowest turnout since its 1979 Islamic
Revolution. Of those elected to the 290-seat body, hardliners hold over
230 seats, according to an Associated Press survey.A trained pilot,
Qalibaf served in the paramilitary Guard during the country’s bloody
1980s war with Iraq. After the conflict, he served as the head of the
Guard’s construction arm, Khatam al-Anbia, for several years leading
efforts to rebuild.Qalibaf then served as the head of the Guard’s air
force, when in 1999 he co-signed a letter to reformist president
Mohammad Khatami amid student protests in Tehran over the government
closing a reformist newspaper and a subsequent security force crackdown.
The letter warned Khatami the Guard would take action unilaterally
unless he agreed to put down the demonstrations.Violence around the
protests saw several killed, hundreds wounded and thousands
arrested.Qalibaf then served as the head of Iran’s police, modernizing
the force and implementing the country’s 110 emergency phone number.
However, a leaked recording of a later meeting between Qalibaf and
members of the Guard’s volunteer Basij force, included him claiming that
he ordered gunfire be used against demonstrators in 2003, as well as
praising the violence used in Iran’s 2009 Green Movement
protests.Qalibaf ran failed presidential campaigns in 2005, 2013, and
2017, the last of which saw him withdraw in support of the hard-liner
Ebrahim Raisi. Raisi later became president and died in the May 19
helicopter crash that also killed Foreign Minister Hossein
Amirabdollahian and six others.Iran’s parliament plays a secondary role
in governing the country, though it can intensify pressure on a
presidential administration when deciding on the annual budget and other
important bills. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 85, has the
final say in all important state matters.Iran will hold presidential
elections on June 28 to replace Raisi. On Thursday, a five-day
registration period for candidates will open.
UN Security Council
to meet for emergency session after Rafah strike-Spain, Norway, Ireland
to formally recognize Palestinian state, saying it is ‘justice for
Palestinian people’ and only way for peace in the region-By AFP and ToI

The UN Security Council was set to
convene an emergency meeting Tuesday over an Israeli strike targeting
Hamas operatives that also reportedly killed dozens in a displaced
persons camp in Rafah, with three European countries slated to formally
recognize a Palestinian state.AFP journalists on the ground early
Tuesday reported fresh Israeli strikes overnight in the southern Gaza
border city, where an Israeli attack targeting two senior Hamas members
on Sunday night sparked a fire that ripped through a nearby displacement
center, killing 45 people, according to Hamas-run Gaza health
officials. The attack prompted a wave of international condemnation, with
Palestinians and many Arab countries calling it a “massacre.” Israel
said it was looking into the “tragic mishap.”“There is no safe place in
Gaza. This horror must stop,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
posted on social media.UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths pointed to
the widespread warnings of civilian deaths that circulated ahead of
Israel’s incursion into Rafah, saying in a statement: “We’ve seen the
consequences in last night’s utterly unacceptable attack.”“To call it ‘a
mistake’ is a message that means nothing for those killed, those
grieving, and those trying to save lives,” he added.Diplomats said the
UN Security Council would convene Tuesday for an emergency session
called by Algeria to discuss the attack. The EU’s foreign policy chief
said he was “horrified by news” of the strike, while French President
Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged” and a US National Security
Council spokesperson said Israel “must take every precaution possible to
protect civilians.”The Israeli military said it was launching a
probe.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Knesset the deaths
occurred “despite our best efforts” to protect civilians. The outcry over
the strike came as Spain, Ireland and Norway were set to formally
recognize a Palestinian state on Tuesday in a decision slammed by Israel
as a “reward” for Hamas after its brutal attack on October 7, which
sparked the war.“Recognizing the state of Palestine is about justice for
the Palestinian people,” Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares
said Monday in Brussels. It was also “the best guarantee of security for
Israel and absolutely essential for reaching peace in the region,” he
said alongside his Irish and Norwegian counterparts. On Monday, Foreign
Minister Israel Katz said he had told Spain’s consulate in Jerusalem to
stop offering consular services to West Bank Palestinians from June 1 as
a “preliminary punitive” measure.Israel launched the deadly strike on
Rafah late Sunday, hours after Hamas fired a barrage of rockets from
there at the Tel Aviv area, most of which were intercepted. The Israel
Defense Forces said its aircraft “struck a Hamas compound” in the city
and killed Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar, senior operative who ran
terror activities for the group in the West Bank.According to the IDF,
Rafah contains four of the six remaining Hamas battalions and is the
terror group’s last remaining stronghold.Gaza’s civil defense agency
said the strike ignited a fire that tore through a displacement center
in northwestern Rafah near a facility of the UN agency for Palestinian
refugees, UNRWA.The war in Gaza started after Hamas’s October 7 attack
on southern Israel, in which some 1,200 people were murdered and 252
were taken hostage. Israel vowed to topple the terror group’s regime in
Gaza and secure the release of the hostages.
Thousands in Paris
demonstrate near Israeli Embassy after deadly Rafah
strike-Pro-Palestinian protests against Israel also held in Spain amid
global outcry over IDF attack targeting Hamas officials in which dozens
of Gazans also reported killed-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 6:28

About 10,000 people took part in a demonstration
near the Israeli embassy in Paris on Monday after an IDF strike
targeting senior Hamas figures reportedly killed dozens of displaced
Palestinians in Rafah. The demonstration gathered a few hundred meters
(yards) from the embassy in the center of the French capital before
protesters chanted “We are all Gaza children,” “Free Gaza” and other
pro-Palestinian slogans.Protests were also held Monday in Madrid and
Barcelona. The demonstrations were organized a day after Israel’s attack
on Hamas targets in Rafah which set off a fire in a tent city where 45
people died, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The strike
targeted and killed the commander of Hamas’s so-called West Bank
headquarters — charged with advancing attacks against Israel in and from
the West Bank — as well as another top member of the unit. The strike
drew fiercer condemnations from the European Union, the United Nations,
Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, France, and others, who called for an
immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The US meanwhile lamented the “devastating”
and “heartbreaking” images from the strike, which is being investigated
by an independent military body responsible for investigating unusual
incidents amid the war triggered by Hamas’s October 7 terror
onslaught.“It is a massacre too many,” said François Rippe of the
Association France-Palestine Solidarity group that organized the rally,
which the Paris police service said involved about 10,000 people.“They
start a fire in a camp for displaced, they burn people and we (France)
don’t even summon the Israeli ambassador to ask for an account. It is
just not acceptable,” Rippe added. One large banner at the rally showed
presidents Emmanuel Macron of France Joe Biden of the United States and
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the slogan “it is humanity they
are assassinating.”The army said it carried out the attack after
receiving intelligence that senior Hamas commanders Yassin Rabia and
Khaled Najjar were in the area. It claimed that it took “many steps” to
reduce civilian harm and believed that non-combatants would be
protected.A military source said that two missiles with a “reduced in
size” warhead, which were adapted for such targets, were used in the
strike. The IDF added that the strike did not take place in the
designated “humanitarian zone” in the al-Mawasi region on the coast,
where the military has called Palestinians to evacuate to in recent
weeks. Palestinians say that the zone is completely overcrowded, forcing
them to find adjacent areas to shelter.Netanyahu, in the Knesset on
Monday, lamented the tragedy. “Despite our efforts not to harm them,
there was a tragic mishap. We are investigating the incident,” he said.
“For us, it’s a tragedy; for Hamas it’s a strategy.”
