One of two black boxes from Russian plane damaged: Egyptian ministry-Reuters-NOV 4,15- YAHOONEWS
CAIRO (Reuters) - Investigators have extracted and validated the contents of the flight data recorder, one of two so-called black boxes recovered from the Russian airplane that crashed in Egypt, Egypt's Civil Aviation Ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry said the second black box which contains the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was partially damaged and much work was required to extract data from it."Consequently no further comment on the CVR can be made. Examination of parts on site is continuing," said the ministry's statement.Earlier, Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate dismissed in an audio message doubts that it had downed the Russian passenger plane over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all aboard, and said it would tell the world how it did so in its own time. The Russian-operated Airbus A321M crashed on Saturday shortly after taking off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh on its way to St Petersburg, killing all 224 people on board.Sinai Province, an Egyptian group loyal to Islamic State, said in a statement the same day that it had brought down the airliner "in response to Russian air strikes that killed hundreds of Muslims on Syrian land".The claim was dismissed by Russian and Egyptian officials. Security experts and investigators have said the plane is unlikely to have been struck from the outside and Sinai-based militants are not believed to possess the technology to shoot down a jet from a cruising altitude above 30,000 feet.Russian officials have, however, said the plane probably broke up in the air, leaving open the prospect of some kind of explosion on board.Asked to comment on those remarks and local press reports that the black box voice recorders had picked up unusual sounds before the crash, Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kemal said the facts had yet to be established."This is all speculation. There is nothing definitive until the investigation commission completes its probe," he said.In an audio message posted on a Twitter account used by the group, Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate insisted it was behind the crash. The claim could not immediately be authenticated."We, with God's grace, are the ones who brought it down, and we are not obliged to disclose the mechanism of its demise," the speaker said.Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, launched air raids against opposition groups in Syria including Islamic State on Sept. 30. The hardline group has called for war against both Russia and the United States in response to their air strikes in Syria.Islamic State backers in Iraq issued a video on Tuesday congratulating their Egyptian colleagues and warning Russian President Vladimir Putin that more was to come.Sinai-based militants have killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police in recent years and have also attacked Western targets. Egypt has carried out air strikes on them.Islamic State websites have in the past claimed responsibility for actions that have not been conclusively attributed to them. Officials say there is no evidence to suggest so far that a bomb brought down the plane.(Reporting by Lin Noueihed; Editing by Michael Georgy)
Crashed Russian plane may have been brought down by explosive device, UK says-Reuters-NOV 4,15-YAHOONEWS
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said on Wednesday that the Russian plane that crashed in Egypt after taking off from Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh might have been brought down by an explosive device."While the investigation is still ongoing we cannot say categorically why the Russian jet crashed," Prime Minister David Cameron's office said in a statement."But as more information has come to light we have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device."As a precautionary measure, it said, the government had decided that flights due to leave the resort for Britain on Wednesday evening would be delayed to allow time for a team of UK aviation experts, currently on their way, to make an assessment of the security arrangements in place at the airport. That assessment was expected to be completed later and there were no more flights due to take off from Britain to Sharm al-Sheikh on Wednesday." We would underline that this is a precautionary step and we are working closely with the airlines on this approach," the statement said.Extra consular staff were being sent to the resort to help British holidaymakers there, it said, while those either there or planning to travel were advised to contact their airline or tour operator.Britain was not changing the level of its travel advice to the area, it added. The Russian-operated Airbus A321M crashed on Saturday shortly after taking off from the resort on its way to St Petersburg, killing all 224 people on board.(Reporting by Stephen Addison; editing by Michael Holden)
Exclusive: Cause of Russian plane crash looking like explosion - source close to investigation-Reuters By Ahmed Mohamed Hassan-NOV 4,15-YAHOONEWS
CAIRO (Reuters) - The cause of a Russian plane crash in Egypt on Saturday is looking more like an explosion but it is not clear whether it was linked to fuel or engine trouble or a bomb, an Egyptian source close to the investigation of the black boxes said on Wednesday."It is believed to be an explosion but what kind is not clear. There is an examination of the sand at the crash site to try and determine if it was a bomb," the source told Reuters."There are forensic investigations underway at the crash site. That will help determine the cause, to see if traces of explosives are found."Egypt has dismissed claims by Islamic State that it brought down the aircraft with 224 passengers and crew aboard. The country's aviation ministry said earlier the cockpit voice recorder from the plane was partially damaged but that black box data had been extracted and validated and was being analyzed.(Additional reporting by Tim Hepher; Editing by Janet Lawrence)
Russian-built plane crashes in South Sudan-Dozens of people died along the banks of the White Nile River in a cargo plane crash Wednesday. This is the second aircraft with ties to Russia to crash this week.Christian Science Monitor By Michael D. Regan-NOV 4,15-YAHOONEWS
The Antonov-12 B turboprop plane had just left Juba International Airport in the country’s capital city and crashed in a farming community, about a half-mile from the runway.Fatalities continue to mount, according to the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, with witnesses reported seeing up to 41 people dead. One of the few survivors appears to be a 14-month-old girl.First responders, some wearing muddied white hazardous materials suits and masks, carried the dead and injured away on stretchers. The Asia Airways plane was torn apart, leaving debris dispersed near the crash site on an island along the White Nile River’s eastern bank. The plane was heading to the oil fields of Paloch, north of Juba, authorities said. The majority of people on board were believed to be oil workers.Ateny Wek Ateny, a presidential spokesman, told Reuters most people aboard the flight were South Sudanese nationals. At least six people on board were foreign crew members, including five Armenians and one Russian. The plane was operated by Allied Services Ltd., a freight and logistics firm, and owned by Asia Airways of Tajikistan, the BBC reports. It was constructed in Russia in 1971.Stephen Warikozi said that the crash site has been secured and that crews are working to recover the plane’s black box.South Sudan, the world’s newest country, is in the midst of a brutal and drawn-out civil war, which began shortly after the country formed in 2011. The conflict is largely driven by tribal allegiances and is threatening to lead to widespread famine, as farmers and cattlemen flee their villages. The plane is the second Russian aircraft to go down this week.In Egypt, investigators are still sifting through clues left from Saturday’s crash of Metrojet Flight 9268, which was heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, Russia when it went down, killing the 224 passengers on board. On Wednesday, a group claiming to be the Egyptian wing of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the crash in Egypt and indicated it was in response to the increase in Russian air strikes in Syria. Egyptian and Russian authorities denied the group's involvement. While the investigation is ongoing, new evidence suggests the Russian aircraft’s tail may have detached mid-air. A US satellite image also captured a wave of heat emanating from the craft just before it went down.Experts have said the ISIS affiliate probably does not have the technology to strike a jet at 30,000 feet, Reuters reported.Russian officials say the plane likely broke up while still in flight - given the size of the debris field. The Egyptian aviation minister said local reports about unusual sounds heard before the crash on a black box voice recorder were unfounded.“This is all speculation,” said Hossam Kemal, the minister. “There is nothing definitive until the investigation commission completes its probe.”
