Israel, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad have been added to the United Nations’ so-called “list of shame,” which is attached to an annual report released by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s office that documents alleged rights violations against children in armed conflict, sparking outrage in Jerusalem.This is the first time that Israel and Hamas have been included on this list, joining the ranks of Russia, the Islamic State, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Afghanistan, Iraq, Myanmar, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.Israel is believed to be the first democratic country included on the list. Last year, Russia was added to the list for the first time over its treatment of children in the war against Ukraine.The report will not be released until next Friday, but Guterres’s office called Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan on Friday to formally inform him of the decision to include Israel in it. The UN Security Council will hold a hearing on June 26 to discuss the report.Previous reports included chapters on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which accused Israel of grave rights violations against children. WASHINGTON (AP) — The US military-built pier designed to carry badly needed aid into Gaza by boat has been reconnected to the beach in the Strip after it broke apart in storms and rough seas, and food and other supplies will begin to flow soon, US Central Command announced Friday.The section that connects to the beach in Gaza, the causeway, was rebuilt nearly two weeks after heavy storms damaged it and abruptly halted what had already been a troubled delivery route.“Earlier this morning in Gaza, US forces successfully attached the temporary pier to the Gaza beach,” Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, deputy commander of US Central Command, told reporters by phone Friday. “We expect to resume delivery of humanitarian assistance from the sea in the coming days.”Cooper said operations at the reconnected pier will be ramped up soon with a goal to get 1 million pounds (450,000 kilograms) of food and other supplies moving through the pier into Gaza every two days.A large section of the causeway broke apart May 25 as heavy winds and high seas hit the area, and four Army vessels operating there went aground, injuring three service members, including one who remains in critical condition. The damage was the latest stumbling block in what has been a persistent struggle to get food to Palestinians during the nearly 8-month-old Israel-Hamas war.Bad weather had earlier slowed the delivery of sections of the pier and US military personnel from Virginia to the region. And early efforts to get aid from the pier into Gaza were disrupted as residents stormed and looted the trucks that aid agencies were using to transport the food to the warehouses for distribution.The maritime route for a limited time had been an additional way to help get more aid into Gaza because the Israeli offensive in the southern city of Rafah has limited the amount of aid entering southern Gaza via land.Egypt has refused to let aid through the Rafah crossing while Israeli troops control the Gaza side. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said those two took on a lot of water and sand and that the Israeli Navy has been helping with the repairs.Biden, a Democrat, announced his plan for the US military to build a pier during his State of the Union address in early March, and the military said it would take about 60 days to get it installed and operational. The initial cost was estimated at $320 million, but Singh said earlier this week that the price had dropped to $230 million, due to contributions from Britain and because the cost of contracting trucks and other equipment was less than expected.It took a bit longer than the planned two months for installation, with the first trucks carrying aid for the Gaza Strip rolling down the pier on May 17. Just a day later, crowds overran a convoy of trucks as they headed into Gaza, stripping the cargo from 11 of the 16 vehicles before they reached a UN warehouse.The next day, as officials altered the travel routes of the convoys, aid finally began reaching people in need. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — At least nine Yemeni employees of United Nations agencies have been arrested by Yemen’s Houthi rebels under unclear circumstances, authorities said Friday, as the rebels face increasing financial pressure and airstrikes from a US-led coalition. Others working for aid groups also likely have been taken.The developments come as the Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.But while gaining more attention internationally, the secretive group has cracked down on dissent at home, including recently sentencing 44 people to death.Regional officials, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief journalists, confirmed the details. Those held include staff from the United Nations human rights agency, its development program, the World Food Programme and one working for the office of its special envoy, the officials said. The wife of one of those held is also apprehended.The UN declined to immediately comment.The Mayyun Organization for Human Rights, which similarly identified the UN staffers held, named other aid groups whose employees were arrested by the Houthis across four provinces — Amran, Hodeida, Saada and Saana. Those groups did not immediately acknowledge the detentions.“We condemn in the strongest terms this dangerous escalation, which constitutes a violation of the privileges and immunities of United Nations employees granted to them under international law, and we consider it to be oppressive, totalitarian, blackmailing practices to obtain political and economic gains,” Mayyun said in a statement.Activists, lawyers and others also began an open online letter, calling on the Houthis to immediately release those held, because if they don’t, it “helps isolate the country from the world.”Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their affiliated media organizations did not immediately acknowledge the development. However, it comes as the Houthis have faced issues with having enough currency to support the economy in areas they hold — something signaled by their move to introduce a new coin into the Yemeni currency, the riyal. Yemen’s exiled government in Aden and other nations criticized the move as the Houthis turning to counterfeiting. Aden authorities also have demanded all banks move their headquarters there.“Internal tensions and conflicts could spiral out of control and lead Yemen into complete economic collapse,” warned Yemeni journalist Mohammed Ali Thamer in an analysis published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Bloomberg separately reported Thursday that the US planned to further increase economic pressure on the Houthis by blocking their revenue sources, including a planned $1.5 billion Saudi payment to cover salaries for government employees in rebel-held territory.The war in Yemen has killed more than 150,000 people, including fighters and civilians, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, killing tens of thousands more. The Houthis’ attacks on shipping have helped deflect attention from their problems at home and the stalemated war. An AP investigation found some detainees were scorched with acid, forced to hang from their wrists for weeks at a time, or were beaten with batons.
