Bloomberg: Maybe A Secret Banking Cabal Does Run The World After All
Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Friday, January 29, 2010

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW5Jv-TRXh0&feature=player_embedded

In another measure of how what the establishment labels conspiracy theory is quickly becoming mainstream, Bloomberg News carries a story today acknowledging that those derided as crazy for warning that the world is run by a secret banking cabal have largely been proven right in light of the AIG cover-up.The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists who stockpile ammo, bottled water and peanut butter. After this week’s congressional hearing into the bailout of American International Group Inc., you have to wonder if those folks are crazy after all, writes Bloomberg’s David Reilly today.Wednesday’s hearing described a secretive group deploying billions of dollars to favored banks, operating with little oversight by the public or elected officials.
Reilly goes on to describe how the New York Fed conducted a backdoor bailout (or in plainer terms a wholesale looting of the taxpayer) of banks like Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Merrill Lynch & Co., Societe Generale and Deutsche Bank AG, and then sought to keep it secret from the public.Reilly also highlights another telling quote by Representative Marcy Kaptur during the hearing on Wednesday, when she told Geithner, A lot of people think that the president of the New York Fed works for the U.S. government. But in fact you work for the private banks that elected you.

Reilly savages Tim Geithner’s denial of any involvement in the scandal and concludes with stating, When unelected and unaccountable agencies pick banking winners while trying to end-run Congress, even as taxpayers are forced to lend, spend and guarantee about $8 trillion to prop up the financial system, our collective blood should boil.As we have constantly emphasized, as the global government and the financial takeover accelerates, it’s becoming harder and harder for the elite to hide the true intention of what they are doing, which is centralizing power into fewer hands, destroying sovereignty and creating a one world order run by an unelected, undemocratic authoritarian system. So whereas conspiracy theorists were once sidelined as paranoid kooks, as more and more of what they warned about comes to fruition, they gain more credibility and the establishment finds it more difficult to neutralize what they are saying by means of character assassination.

The Bloomberg writer’s admission that the conspiracy theorists were probably right reminds us of former Clinton advisor Dick Morris’ appearance on Fox News last year, when he pointed out that people who have been sounding the alarm bells over a global government takeover for decades have also been vindicated. Those people who have been yelling oh the UN’s gonna take over, global government, they’ve been crazy but now – they’re right!,stated Morris on Sean Hannity’s show.

Crimatologists Found Guilty of Hiding Data: Will escape criminal conviction on technicalities James Corbett The Corbett Report January 29, 2010

Phil Jones’ illegal activity will not be pursued criminally because of a statute of limitations on Freedom of Information request violations. It’s just not the IPCC’s month. Now, on top of Pachaurigate and Glaciergate, the original Climategate scandal has finally exploded underneath the crimatologists at the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit. In a shocking rebuke of the key scientsts behind the IPCC peer-reviewed assessment of the dangers of manmade climate change, the UK Information Commissioner ruled yesterday that the group of scientists known as the hockey team had broken Freedom of Information laws by conspiring to ignore legitimate requests for information and even conspiring to delete key emails and correspondence so they could never be assessed. The decision comes as no surprise to those who have been following the scandal since it broke. Given that the authenticity of the leaked emails themselves has never been in doubt, it was an open and shut case to find criminal conspiracy in emails such as this one from chief crimatologist Phil Jones to some of his closest collaborators:

Mike,

Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis. Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address. We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.I see that CA claim they discovered the 1945 problem in the Nature paper!!

Cheers Phil

Or this one from Phil Jones to chief cohort Michael Mann in 2005 about Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, two researchers who had a well-known problem getting basic data out of the CRU:The two MMs have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the UK, I think I’ll delete the file rather than send to anyone. Does your similar act in the US force you to respond to enquiries within 20 days? – our does [sic]! The UK works on precedents, so the first request will test it. We also have a data protection act, which I will hide behind. The illegal activity will not be pursued criminally, however, because of a statute of limitations on Freedom of Information request violations. Although a mere technicality, this does raise the rather Kafkaesque question of how the afflicted parties were supposed to have shown grounds for appeal of the hockey team’s initial denials (let alone criminal activity in conspiring to deny the requests) before the Climategate emails were leaked. Give the pre-Climategate mentality—where those who suspected criminal conspiracy amongst the crimatologists were often compared to flat-earthers, it is almost inconceivable that complaints to the Information Commissioner would have been given serious consideration, especially given the crimatologists’ own admissions that they had gotten advice from none other than the Information Commissioner on how to avoid dealing with FOI requests. But while this ruling will not result in criminal conviction, it certainly will further expose the alarmist machine that has been working desperately to downplay this criminal activity. Scientific American (henceforth known as SCAM) has just released an article claiming that the Climategate emails exposed nothing other than how science is actually done, putting the venerable publication in the awkward position of arguing that breaking the law in a mad quest to keep data out of the hands of dissenting scientists is a routine part of the scientific method. Sadly, such reasoning is par for the course in publications that have thrown their lot in with a group of criminals who are threatening the name of science itself with their insane behaviour.

Perhaps the most hopeful sign to emerge from this is that the truth will out, especially when an informed online community does an end run around the dinosaurs of the establishment media to get that truth to the people. All of the publications one would have expected to defend the indefensible did so right from the start of the Climategate scandal, from the BBC to The Guardian to The New York Times to Nature. Now, each of them have egg on their faces as the scandal they dismissed as a tempest in a teapot is in fact evidence of criminal activity…as the alternative media has pointed out all along.Scandals like this are exactly why the establishment media is hemorrhaging readers and viewers by the day while the alternative online media is exploding across the board. From Watts Up With That? to Climate Audit to to Climategate.tv, readership has never been better. The people recognize the truth when they see it, and those who continue to propound lies in the face of truth and defend the indefensible will be turned off by a public that is simply fed up. And that, ultimately, is why the truth is winning.

Despite Role in AIG Bailout, Senate Votes to Reappoint Bernanke
Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com January 28, 2010

Alan Greenspan’s protege Ben Bernanke is about to be reappointed to a second four-year term as the Federal Reserve boss.Earlier today, the Senate voted 77-23 to end debate on Bernanke after his supporters took to the floor and sang his praises and critics made ominous warnings. To vote against confirmation could unnerve investors and exacerbate economic uncertainty in the marketplace, which is exactly what we do not need at this time, said Sen. Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, according to The Wall Street Journal. We need the wisdom of patience,he said.Let us not judge the man or the work prematurely.Bernanke did nothing about the unsustainable build-up of leverage in the housing market. In fact, his Fed inflated the bubble that made it possible. He oversaw the bailout of Bear Stearns and AIG, a call that Congress and the American people should have made.Bernanke oversaw the massive expansion of the Fed’s balance sheet from about $900 billion to over $2 trillion. At the behest of international bankers, Helicopter Ben transcended monetary policy and bank supervision into the world of fiscal policy, financial speculation, and the resultant economic crisis we are now experiencing. He is a loyal friend of the banksters and has worked tirelessly to cover up where Fed money has gone and prevent Congress and the American people from looking at the Fed’s crooked books.

If the Senate follows through, Bernanke will be allowed to continue the bankster agenda designed to ruin the country and continue the move toward globalization, world government and the bankster plan for a planetary slave labor plantation indistinguishable from the one operating in China.Bernanke fiddled while our markets burned, said Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, the senior Republican on the Senate Banking Committee.I believe that it is the duty of this body to hold accountable those regulators whose poor oversight of our financial institutions and markets helped produce the greatest economic crisis this country has experienced in eighty years.Bernanke did more than merely fiddle while markets burned — he actively micromanaged the process.Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was grilled yesterday over the AIG deal that benefited Goldman Sachs and the banksters.Earlier this week we found out that Ben had things to hide. Sen. Jim Bunning, a Republican from Kentucky, said on CNBC that he has seen documents showing that Bernanke covered up the fact that his staff recommended the Fed not bailout AIG. A letter Bunning sent Monday to Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd also refers to an [e]mail exchange regarding restructuring of assistance to AIG, initiated by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in March 2009.Only Dodd’s Banking Committee had access to the documents and they were kept close to the vest. Access only came after Bunning publicly complained that Dodd and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) were the only members of the committee could see them, writes Ryan Grim. On Monday, Bunning sent a letter to Dodd, asking him to subpoena the emails and other documents. Bunning and other committee members have thus far had to view the documents at the Federal Reserve and are bound by confidentiality from revealing their contents. Not that it matters. It looks like the Senate will reappoint Bernanke and send a message to Wall Street and the houses of international finance — Ben’s OK with us and the greatest heist in history can continue with the support of the Senate. All who gave Ben a wink and a nod should be bounced out of Congress come the elections of 2012.

A Rudderless Ship Of State
Chuck Baldwin Infowars.com January 29, 2010

In Patrick Henry’s immortal Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death speech, he said,[I]t is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth.Never have Henry’s words been truer than they are today. For too long, good men have turned a blind eye to the obvious reality that America’s Ship of State has swerved significantly off course. In fact, it is no hyperbole to say that America’s Ship of State is completely rudderless and, absent a speedy course correction, seems destined to crash against the rocks of oppression and economic ruin in the very near future. For anyone willing to open their eyes, the manifestations of America’s almost-certain collision with history are everywhere.
Patrick Henry:Bad men cannot make good citizens . . . A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom.America’s Liberty Ship is dependent upon the twin mainsails of Morality and Constitutional Government to stay on course. It is an irrefutable and irreversible law that these twin sails are indissolubly linked. We cannot have one without the other. America’s founders clearly understood this. For example, our second President, John Adams, said,We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

Samuel Adams (called the Father of the American Revolution) said,He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of this country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man . . . The sum of all is, if we would most truly enjoy this gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people.Thomas Jefferson (the author of the Declaration of Independence and our third President) said,Self-love . . . is the sole antagonist of virtue, leading us constantly by our propensities to self-gratification in violation of our moral duties to others.Jefferson also said,[If a] people [are] so demoralized and depraved as to be incapable of exercising a wholesome control, their reformation [must] be taken up ab incunabulis [from the beginning]. Their minds [must] be informed by education what is right and what wrong, [must] be encouraged in habits of virtue and deterred from those of vice by the dread of punishments, proportioned indeed, but irremissible; in all cases, to follow truth as the only safe guide, and to eschew error, which bewilders us in one false consequence after another in endless succession. These are the inculcations necessary to render the people a sure basis for the structure of order and good government. Our first President, George Washington (called the Father of his Country), said, Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. And to quote Patrick Henry again,Bad men cannot make good citizens . . . A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom.Yet, what do we see taking place all over America–including in the halls of government, the boardrooms of business, and the sanctuaries of churches? An almost complete and total breakdown of morality. And by a breakdown of morality, I am referring to much more than sexual immorality.

Morality demands honesty and equity in judgment. Morality is selfless. Morality is humble. Morality is jealous over truth and justice. Morality would never jeopardize the future on the altar of the present. Morality does not place personal advancement above principle. Morality respects its heritage and honors its ancestors. And Morality gladly submits to lawful authority, especially divine authority. But compare basic morality to the modus operandi of today’s governments, businesses, and churches. Instead of truth and moral principles, we find people who are almost totally absorbed by a culture of deceit, selfishness, ambition, and greed. Rightly does the Scripture say,The love of money is the root of all evil. (I Timothy 6:10) Of more than one church or nonprofit ministry leader could it be said,He doesn’t let his Christianity get in the way of his business.Ditto for many so-called Christian businessmen and politicians. In fact, a good many religious leaders and churchmen today would not take a backseat to the most greedy, corrupt politician, or shady businessman that could be found.Sunday-by-Sunday, pastors prostitute themselves to wealthy contributors, community leaders, or politicians. Day-by-day, unscrupulous bankers and businessmen give the shaft to honest, hardworking Americans. And almost hour-by-hour, politicians sell their souls to the highest bidder–even if that bidder represents values and principles that would destroy freedom and liberty in our land.

How is it that pastors are unwilling to educate themselves (and their congregants) about the dangers and pitfalls to which America’s leaders are subjecting us? How is it that businessmen will smugly look the other way as their practices advance the causes of our enemies and weaken our own country? How is it that politicians will allow themselves to be corrupted, not only by evil forces from within America, but also by devilish forces from alien powers? As a result of this total breakdown of basic morality in virtually every distinguished element within the American framework, constitutional governance is also virtually nonexistent. Adams was right: Our Constitution was made only for a moral . . . people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.America’s political officeholders routinely ignore their oaths to preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution. Routinely! Many have never read the Constitution, or if they have, they desire neither to understand nor to obey it. And even worse is the fact that most Americans (including America’s spiritual leaders) seem totally unbothered by it all. As long as their favorite politician, political party, or personal cause benefits, they could not care less whether the Constitution is followed or not. More than 50 years of moral relativism has now reached almost total and complete social saturation. If I’m a Republican, it doesn’t matter if the Constitution is followed as long as Republicans win elections. And Democrats behave the same way.As long as my party wins, who cares about the Constitution, honesty, or truth? is the attitude of many politically involved Americans–including many Christian Americans.Democrats don’t care if Bill Clinton or Barack Obama lies, and Republicans don’t care if George H. W. Bush or George W. Bush lies. The only time we care about someone lying is when it’s the person from the other party. If the other party promotes evil, we are enraged, but when our party promotes evil, we sit on our anatomical posteriors in complete silence and with full approbation.

And this is the bottom line: because We the People have lost our morality and fidelity to constitutional government, we have countless conscienceless criminals located at virtually every level in and out of the federal government (political party notwithstanding) that are up to their necks in total and absolute EVIL! I mean down-in-the-gutter, Genghis Khan-type evil. I’m talking about drug running, kidnappings, sexual exploitations, assassinations, family ruinations, illegal imprisonments, torture, and mass murder. If they desire it, they do it (or hire/order it done). Because there is no moral compass guiding our churches and businesses, there is no moral compass guiding those Machiavellians in Washington, D.C. After all, where do all these politicians, bureaucrats, blood-merchants, and mercenaries come from, if not from within our own social and religious establishments? Until we wake up to the fact that our country, our Constitution, our liberties, and our future are up against evil–PURE, UNADULTERATED EVIL–we are never going to be able to muster the dedication and resolve required to turn this Ship of State around. Until we get our heads out of the sand and start seeing things as they are (and not as the national news media wants us to see them), until we are willing to stop indulging in the illusions of hope, and until we stop shutting our eyes against a painful truth, it will not matter to a tinker’s dam who we elect or which party is in power. Folks, wake up to it: WE ARE FIGHTING AN EVIL SYSTEM!! And there is nothing that the people who are caught up in this evil system will not do. Nothing! They will steal; they will lie; they will cheat; they will kill; they will rape; they will pillage; they will plunder; they will do ANYTHING they think is necessary to fulfill their evil machinations.Setting our Ship of State aright starts with We the People returning to the basic, moral laws of right and wrong. Whether it is business, religion, or politics, right is right and wrong is wrong! (And one does not have to be a born-again Christian to know right from wrong: anyone who understands and respects the principles of Natural Law can and will be an ally in the fight for right. In fact, sometimes our enemies come from within our family–even the family of faith. See Matthew 10:36.) It means to stop covering for evildoers, whether that person belongs to our own political party or even our own family. It means to stop living for personal gain and advancement. It means being honest and demanding honesty in others. It means elevating truth to a position above expediency. It means acknowledging that there is a Supreme Authority to which all men must submit–and I’m not referring to the US Supreme Court.America’s Ship of State is currently rudderless. And as long as we are expecting someone in Washington, D.C., to fix the problem, we will continue to be lost–adrift in a sea of evil and criminality. To get America’s Ship of State back on course, you and I must get back on course. And it starts by being willing to OPEN OUR EYES TO PAINFUL TRUTH.

Authorities Quietly Reverse Underwear Bomber Official Story
Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Thursday, January 28, 2010

Authorities have quietly reversed the official story behind the Christmas Day underwear bomber attack and acknowledged that an accomplice was involved, despite weeks of denial and derision of eyewitness Kurt Haskell’s description of a sharp-dressed man who helped Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab board Flight 253 in Amsterdam.

Buried in the last two paragraphs of a story about alleged female suicide bombers coming from Yemen, an ABC News report contains the following bombshell.Federal agents also tell ABCNews.com they are attempting to identify a man who passengers said helped Abdulmutallab change planes for Detroit when he landed in Amsterdam from Lagos, Nigeria.Authorities had initially discounted the passenger accounts, but the agents say there is a growing belief the man have played a role to make sure Abdulmutallab did not get cold feet.Detroit lawyer Kurt Haskell maintained from the beginning that he saw a well-dressed Indian man aid the accused bomber to board the plane despite the fact that he had no passport and was on a terror watch list. While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. The guy said, He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time,
reported the Michigan Live news website.FBI agents interviewed Haskell and he told them about the sharp-dressed man but officials refused to admit that a wider conspiracy was at hand, stoically maintaining the official story that Abdulmutallab had acted alone. Authorities claimed that videotapes did not show a second man accompanying Abdulmutallab and yet they refused to release any footage of the alleged bomber. Why is this not total breaking news? asks Haskell’s wife on their family blog.I think we now know WHY the video is not being released. Because IT SHOWS WHAT KURT SAID!!!!!! I mean, where is his apology? Where? They come out in the media, basically calling Kurt a liar, then they take it back, but it is in the bottom of another nonrelated article. Ridiculous. And still, to date, no authorities contacting KURT to ask him to look at the freaking video and help identify the guy. It’s so insane to me. We have an eyewitness to this, and they just don’t care.

There seems little doubt that Abdulmutallab had at least one accomplice if not more. Authorities have remained silent on other eyewitness reports which described a man intently filming the alleged terrorist throughout the whole flight, a connection that strongly suggests the attempted bomber was involved in some kind of drill and that his strings were being pulled by people in more senior positions. In addition, Flight 253 passengers reported seeing a third man connected to the incident being handcuffed by FBI agents after sniffer dogs found something suspect in his luggage. After initially denying any knowledge of this individual, authorities were forced to acknowledge his existence but claimed he had nothing to do with the attempted attack, completely contradicting multiple eyewitness accounts that state passengers were moved from a waiting area after it was made clear to them that a bomb had been found. The fact that Abdulmutallab’s accomplices were all described as being Indian in appearance would contradict the story that has been spun around the issue in an effort to sell the public on naked body scanners in airports as well as deeper U.S. military involvement in Yemen. The ludicrous spectacle of long-deceased boogeyman Osama bin Laden apparently claiming responsibility for the attempted attack this past weekend only confirmed that a fairytale was being contrived which was totally at odds with what eyewitnesses described. Now that Haskell’s eyewitness account has been vindicated, it remains to be seen whether evidence of a wider conspiracy will be investigated or buried. There seems little doubt that the latter will be the case if Abdulmutallab’s accomplices don’t conveniently lead back to the Al-Qaeda patsies the establishment has already framed for the attack.

WHO Scientist: Swine Flu Pandemic Was Completely Exaggerated Steve Watson
Infowars.net Thursday, Jan 28th, 2010

A scientist with the World Health Organisation has testified, during ongoing hearings in Strasbourg, France, that the swine flu pandemic was part of an overblown angst campaign, devised in conjunction with major drug companies to boost profits for vaccine manufacturers.Professor Ulrich Keil, director of the WHO’s Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology, slammed the organization and its flu chief, Dr Keiji Fukuda while giving evidence before The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).With SARS, with avian flu, always the predictions are wrong…Why don’t we learn from history? Keil said.It [swine flu] produced a lot of turmoil in the pubic and was completely exaggerated in contrast with all the really important matters we have to deal with in public health. The WHO adviser on heart disease, added that the decision had led to a gigantic misallocation of health budgets. We know the great killers are hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, high body mass index, physical inactivity and low fruit and vegetable intake,he said.In spite of all these facts, governments instead wasted huge amounts of money by investing in pandemic scenarios whose evidence base is weak.

PACE, a 47 nation body encompassing democratically elected members of parliament, will determine whether a falsified pandemic was declared by WHO in June 2009 on the advice of medical advisors, many of whom have close financial ties to the very pharmaceutical giants – GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Novartis, – that produced the H1N1 vaccines. It will also look into the controversy surrounding the fact that two shots were initially advised when it was later revealed that one dose was entirely suitable, as well as investigating concerns over hastily developed vaccines containing adjuvants.Pharmaceutical companies are thought to have made a profit of somewhere in the region of $7.5-$10 billion on H1N1 vaccines, recouping the billions they had invested in researching and developing pandemic vaccines after the bird flu scares in 2006 and 2007.The worldwide death toll from H1N1 is thought to be around 13,500, just over a third of the number who die from regular flu every year in the U.S. alone.Heading the hearings is the former chairman of the Health Committee of PACE, Dr. Wolfgang Wodarg. A former German lawmaker, a medical doctor and epidemiologist. Wodarg has referred to the swine flu pandemic as one of the greatest medical scandals of the century.Wodarg has pointed out that the WHO softened the definition of a pandemic from an outbreak in several continents at once with an above-average death rate, to one where the spread of the disease is constant.

Just one month after changing the definition, and with just 144 people having died from H1N1, the flu was given the highest threat classification possible, a stage-six pandemic alert. By comparison, the mildest 20th Century pandemic killed a million people.I have never heard such a worldwide echo to a health political action, Wodarg, an epidemiologist who formerly led the health committee for the Council of Europe, said at Tuesday’s hearing. It was stated in panic- stricken terms that this was a flu that could threaten humanity and a great number of humans could fall ill. This is why billions of dollars of medications were bought. Wodarg said.He added that the the change in definition made it possible for the pharmaceutical industry to transform this opportunity into cash, under contracts which were mainly secret. In my view, the WHO undertook an incomprehensible action, which cannot be justified by scientific evidence. The Council of Europe should investigate this to see how WHO can undertake this kind of dangerous nonsense, said Dr Wodarg.WHO’s flu chief, Dr Fukuda, insisted that its swine flu scientists do not have conflicts of interest owing to close links with pharmaceutical companies.

Let me state clearly for the record – the influenza pandemic policies and responses recommended and taken by WHO were not improperly influenced by the pharmaceutical industry. Fukuda told the inquiry. He said those calling the epidemic fake were wrong and irresponsible.PACE’s findings are expected to be announced January 29 and will likely be followed by an in-depth study and recommendations to European governments.

Zapatero says euro area is stable
ANDREW WILLIS Today JAN 29,10 @ 09:23 CET

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has come out in defence of the euro area, as rising levels of government debt, and in particular Greece's deficit crisis, have led to increasing questions over the stability of the 16-member zone.
Nobody is going to be leaving the euro, said the Spanish leader, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday (28 January). More countries are going to be joining the euro. That is the best proof of how successful the project is, he added. Mr Zapatero was backed up by Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou in pledging to make the budget cuts and other changes required for membership.Mr Papandreou denied speculation that Greece will have to be bailed out by the European Union, although an increasingly number of reports suggest EU officials are busy studying methods to transfer aid the embattled country. We haven't asked for money from the European Union, Mr Papandreou said, adding that Greece had already taken steps - including firing thousands of government workers - to cut its budget deficit, which reached 12.7 of GDP percent last year. The Socialist leader also expressed a certain level of contrition for his country's problems, although he laid much of the blame on the previous centre-right administration. We Greeks see it as our problem to put our house in order, he said.Greece blames itself, not the EU.Latvia is currently battling severe economic problems, including unemployment of 22 percent, but Mr Zatlers said his country still intended to join the euro area by the middle of the decade. Keep the criteria, he said.We all want to join the club.

Finance ministers from Iceland, Netherlands and UK meet to discuss Icesave dispute LEIGH PHILLIPS Today JAN 29,10 @ 17:42 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - In a sign of a possible thaw in relations between Iceland and the UK and the Netherlands, finance ministers from the three countries met informally on Friday (29 January) in the Hague to discuss the Icesave dispute.
Icelandic finance chief Steingrimur Sigfusson was in the Dutch capital this afternoon to meet his Dutch counterpart, Wouter Bos, as well as UK financial services minister Paul Myners for discussions that are just an exchange of information and views - these are not negotiations, according to the Icelandic prime minister's spokesman, Einar Haraldsson. We are hoping to see what scope there is for changes, whether the other sides are open to starting fresh negotiations and open up the Icesave agreement, Mr Haraldsson told EUobserver.Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir told Icelandic radio today that Reykjavik is exploring what possibilities there are to amend the present agreement.Last June, Iceland made an agreement with London and the Hague to pay them back €3.8 billion they used to compensate British and Dutch savers who lost money in October 2008 when their accounts with the online savings account Icesave were frozen, following the collapse of the parent company Landsbanki.

The north Atlantic nation had offered a payment schedule to the British and Dutch governments, but limited to what the country was able to pay. This would amount to an upper limit of four percent of growth in GDP in the case of the UK and two percent in the case of the Netherlands. If the economy did not grow, the country would hold back its payments and after 2024 what remained of the debts would be written off.London and the Hague however refused Iceland's offer, forcing the Icelandic government to narrowly pass a bill that would schedule repayment of the entirety of the sums - worth around 40 percent of Iceland's GDP - and without such conditions.Estimates suggest that every household will have to contribute around €45,000. Icelandic citizens are furious at a deal they say is as onerous as the reparations Germany was forced to pay after the First World War. Protests against the payback provoked the president of the country to refuse to sign the legislation enacting the deal and called a referendum on the matter, now due to take place on 6 March. The move has resulted in Fitch, a credit rating agency, describing the country's bond status as junk, with Standard and Poor threatening a similar move. Further tranches of IMF cash have also been suspended in the wake of the decision and Britain's financial services minister said that if the referendum decision was allowed to stand then Iceland would be frozen out of the international financial system and would not be able to join the European Union. However, polls suggest that the existing Icesave bill will be sharply rejected by voters and newspaper editorials in British and Dutch papers have strongly condemned their governments' tactics as bullying, while development NGOs from both countries have also called for international arbitration.

There is no suggestion that London and the Hague have softened their position, but there have been a series of informal contacts in the last few days. That they see a reason to meet and discuss is a good signal of some openness, said Mr Haraldsson.
Icelandic opposition party leaders will also be present at the meeting in order for the Netherlands and the UK to get a sense of where they stand on the issue. There is no point in restarting negotiations if they are committed to a referendum no matter what, said the spokesman. You can't have two tracks - one fresh negotiations and the other a campaign lead-up to a referendum.Following the meeting, the Dutch and UK ministers refused to discuss the contents of their talks, but put out a joint statement with their Icelandic counterpart, saying simply that the sides will now consider the situation after this meeting. At this stage no further discussions are scheduled. According to British sources, the governments are to analyse what came out of the meeting before returning to the issue.

MEPs seek powers to force resignation of single commissioners
HONOR MAHONY Today JAN 29,10 @ 17:41 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Parliament is set for new political powers allowing it to seek the resignation of an individual European Commissioner, following a working relations agreement sealed earlier this week by senior MEPs and commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso.Due to be voted on 9 February, the power-sharing deal suggests that Mr Barroso must seriously consider whether to ask an individual commissioner to step down if parliament withdraws its confidence. If he chooses not to let the commissioner go he then has to explain his reasoning before MEPs.Under EU treaty rules, MEPs can censure the commission as a whole but not individual members. This new inter-institutional arrangement, while not legally binding, will further increase the political clout of the EU assembly, a trend that has been growing steadily in recent years. Its most obvious expression has been when it has sought, and obtained, changes to the commission line-up before it came into power - although legally it is not able to veto single would-be commissioners. Earlier this month, MEPs forced the resignation of Bulgarian commissioner designate Rumiana Jeleva, following through on political powers won in 2004.

The five-page agreement binds the two institutions more closely together in a series of informal ways. European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek will be allowed to attend the weekly meeting of commissioners when major laws are being proposed. The twice monthly meeting of political group leaders in the parliament will host Mr Barroso when legislative and budgetary matters are discussed.Meanwhile, the monthly question-and-answer session between MEPs and Mr Barroso will be extended to include Catherine Ashton, the EU's top diplomat, and other commissioners. The parliament has also been granted extra rights when it comes to international negotiations, particularly in the area of trade, where it shall have better access to information and will have attendance rights - although only with an observer status for the head of the relevant delegation. In two major areas, MEPs were rebuffed however. They failed to secure agreement from Mr Barroso that there should be US-style hearing for senior appointees to the EU's future diplomatic service, something they had openly pushed for. Instead they received commitment that the ambassadors will be appointed in a transparent manner.Mr Barroso also rejected an attempt by MEPs to oblige the commission to come forward with EU legislation if the chamber requested it, something the commission felt was stepping on its rights as sole initiator of EU legislation.

instead, the commission will respond to a legislation request by the parliament within three months and propose a law, if it decides to do so, within a year, and will give reasons to MEPs if it chooses not to legislate. The deal, agreed on Wednesday and to be looked over by the assembly's political leaders on Thursday (4 February), means the way has been opened for the parliament to vote on the new commission on 9 February. Previously, some MEPs had suggested there would be no commission in view without an inter-institutional agreement first.

EU-funded think tanks defend their credibility
ANDREW RETTMAN Today JAN 29,10 @ 09:15 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission will in 2010 pay €6.7 million in subsidies to a group of think tanks and NGOs.The grants cover 58 organisations, ranging from some of Brussels' best known talking shops, such as Cafe Babel and the European Policy Centre (EPC), to niche bodies such as the European Paralympic Committee. The top 10 recipients are: the Platform of European Social NGOs on €700,000; Notre Europe €605,000; the European Council on Refugees and Exiles €500,000; the European Movement International €430,000; Association Jean Monnet €250,000; the Council of European Municipalities and Regions €240,000; the Association of Local Democracy Agencies €209,000; the Lisbon Council €200,000; the Fundacion Academia Europea de Yuste €195,000 and Friends of Europe €192,000.The money is part of a larger €30 million a year pot in the commission's education and culture department, which pays for a scheme to promote common values and to get ordinary people interested in politics.I think it's fair that an EU citizen should learn about the European Union of which he or she is a part. We make no apologies for explaining what the EU is about, commission spokesman John Macdonald told EUobserver. But for some, Brussels' generosity is not so innocent.

They are setting up their own committees claiming that these are independent think tanks when, in fact, they are cheerleaders for the EU, Pieter Cleppe, from the British eurosceptic think tank, Open Europe, said. They do not question the EU to the extent they would if they were not being funded by it. That's the whole point of the grants.Several of the beneficiaries, such as the European Movement International, Friends of Europe and the Union of European Federalists, have an openly pro-integration position. Just one, Statewatch, which gets 39 percent of its budget from the commission, is a devoted critic of the EU institutions.Mr Cleppe's allegations are potentially the most damaging for policy analysts, such as the EPC, the Centre for European Policy Studies (Ceps) or Notre Europe, whose reputation for objectivity is central to their work.EPC chief Hans Martens pointed out that its grant of €146,000 makes up just over five percent of its budget. You can't buy us for that price, he said. There are no strings attached. We've never felt any pressure because of it. If we were to say something which offends the commission, tant pis.

Tant pis?

Ceps spokesman Marco Incerti took a similar line. Our grant [€140,000] amounts to 2 percent of our budget. So if there was ever an attempt by the commission to influence us, we could afford to lose it,he said. Mr Incerti noted that if you count all the EU projects in which Ceps takes part, EU institutions sign off on about a third of its income, however. For other think tanks, EU dependency is still more acute.Pour la Solidarite gets 65 percent of its funds from the commission's education department grant. The Trans European Policy Studies Association is in for 58 percent. Notre Europe gets 54 percent. We get a big grant but we don't work for the commission per se. We are true to what we think,Notre Europe's funding officer, Jennifer Hoff, told this website. We are really trying to diversify our funding because we do get criticised for this.

World leaders agree on Afghan timetable and funding
VALENTINA POP Today JAN 29,10 @ 09:35 CET

World leaders meeting in London on Thursday agreed to start handing over security duties to Afghan forces in early 2011 and finish the process within five years, while also pledging funds to persuade Taliban groups to renounce violence. The London conference was a decisive step towards greater Afghan leadership to secure, stabilise and develop Afghanistan, leaders from 70 countries participating in the event said in their final communique. The conference was called to help Nato allies chart a roadmap out of Afghanistan amid rising casualties and falling public support in what is now the alliance's flagship mission. The military intervention in Afghanistan started in 2002, in response to the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. It succeeded in ousting the Taliban from power, but not the insurgency, which has now spilled over to Pakistan and has seen growing attacks on Kabul and in areas which had been secure in the past.Washington plans to start withdrawing American troops next July in case the current surge of 30,000 soldiers does not prove successful. By August, the total number of Western troops will have reached more than 100,000.The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, warned against a hasty withdrawal and said his country still needed financial support for its army for another 10-15 years. He outlined plans to re-integrate Taliban willing to cut ties with al Qaeda and other terrorist groups and pursue their political goals peacefully.
His promises to crack down on corruption were welcomed, but his credibility is still dented by cronyism and nepotism charges surrounding his own circle of power. Measures include an independent office to investigate and sanction corrupt officials,to be set up within a month.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the international community still backed Mr Karzai but wanted him to deliver on his promises. He knows what we have in terms of expectations and we have to make sure we deliver for him,she told In The News. International allies have said they will pledge at least €350 million for the reconciliation fund. The London meeting encouraged contributions to the fund, which has so far gathered below €80 million, but gave no firm figure.US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said Washington would back it if insurgents pledged to renounce violence and embrace democracy. The US military has been authorized to use substantial funds to support the effort, she said.Meanwhile, news broke that the United Nations had held exploratory peace talks with Taliban commanders three weeks ago, bolstering the reconciliation track set out by Mr Karzai. The solution to a war is always to talk to your enemies, unless one party triumphs. That is not the case here, said French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, as quoted by the Guardian.
Encouraging signs emerged when Taliban regional commanders asked UN special envoy Kai Eide to give safety guarantees if they laid down their arms. But Mr Eide was cautious in sounding too optimistic. The re-integration process is important, but it has to be accompanied by political reconciliation the UN envoy said at the end of the London conference.

FROM WND'S JERUSALEM BUREAU-Jewish group hosts anti-Israel J Street-But concedes it doesn't know program to take place in its facility January 29, 2010 12:20am Eastern By Aaron Klein 2010 WorldNetDaily

JERUSALEM – A Jewish organization at the University of Pennsylvania that will host an event by J Street, a controversial lobby group accused of working against Israel, conceded it does not yet know J Street's program even though the event will take place in its facilities. I don't yet know the program, only who the main speaker is, Jeremy Brochin, director of Penn Hillel, told WND yesterday. Hillel promotes itself as the largest Jewish campus organization in the world and is known as the center of mainstream Jewish life on campuses across the U.S. Howard Alpert, another director of Penn's Hillel group, told WND earlier this week he agreed to rent space to J Street on the condition the group does not advocate actions that will materially harm Israel or its representatives such as boycotts, sanctions or judicial action; and that they present their views with civility.Hillel's Brochin, however, said his group did not yet receive J Street's full program schedule. After he realized he was being quoted by the media, Brochin changed his statement and said he just doesn't know who is introducing [J Street Executive Director] Jeremy Ben-Ami.However, WND also obtained an e-mail Brochin sent to an Israeli reporter yesterday stating of the J Street event at his group's facilities next week: I frankly do not know what the program is.

J Street's Feb. 4 event will be broadcast live from the university to 24 U.S. college campuses and other venues as part of an initiative to make the group better known locally. The event host committee includes a professor who accused Israel of ethnic cleansing, a supporter of a recent U.N. report charging Israel with war crimes and a host of personalities involved with a Fast for Gaza initiative that demands Israel negotiate with the Hamas terrorist organization. J Street brands itself as pro-Israel. It states on its website it seeks to promote meaningful American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts peacefully and diplomatically. But the group also supports talks with Hamas, a terrorist group whose charter seeks the destruction of Israel. The group opposes sanctions against Iran and is harshly critical of Israel's anti-terror military offensives. J Street is renting the space from the Hillel Jewish student organization at the University of Pennsylvania. J Street's event at Penn is being hosted by characters with controversial views on Israel, including: Rebecca Alpert, chairwoman of the Department of Religion at Temple University in Philadelphia. In a sermon on the Jewish high holiday of Yom Kippur, Alpert compared Israel's anti-terror activities in the Gaza Strip to genocide in Darfur. Alpert also announced she personally undertook a month-long fast for the Gaza population as part of a protest movement that calls for Israel to talk with Hamas and lift a blockade in Gaza. Israel daily allows humanitarian goods into Gaza but bans certain materials that can be used to manufacture weapons or aid Hamas's military wing.

Elliot Ratzman, a visiting professor of religion at Swarthmore University. His article in the student-run magazine American Foreign Policy accused Israel of ethnic cleansing – creating such harrowing conditions for Palestinians that they will be forced to move from their property to Palestinian-controlled enclaves or, preferably for the Israeli right wing, away from the region altogether.Ratzman particularly took issue with Israel's demolishing of Palestinian homes. However, he did not mention the demolished homes were mostly built illegally on Jewish-owned land. He also failed to mention Israel also routinely bulldozes Jewish homes built without proper municipal permits. Arthur Waskow, an author and far-left political activist. Waskow is highly critical of Israeli policies in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. In a recent posting at the website for the leftist Shalom Center Waskow strongly defended a U.N. report penned by South African judge Richard Goldstone that claimed both Hamas and Israel were guilty of war crimes. Goldstone's report claimed Israel deliberately targeted civilians during the Gaza conflict. The terrorist group instead launched a rocket offensive against Israeli population centers. The U.N. report equated Israel, which worked to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza, to Hamas, which utilized civilians as human shields and fired rockets at Jewish cities from Palestinian hospitals and apartment buildings. During the Gaza war, Israel sent hundreds of thousands of text messages and placed tens of thousands of calls warning local Palestinians of incoming attacks against Hamas' military infrastructure in Gaza. As WND reported, Goldstone's investigation may have relied on false witnesses and Palestinian misinformation. Just last weekend, it was reported Israel found multiple crucial factual errors in the Goldstone report.

Pro-Ishmael

J Street's event at the University of Pennsylvania is opposed by a new pro-Israel activist organization calling itself Z Street, which is planning a protest event to coincide with J Street's outreach day. It is a shame that there will be any connection between Hillel and J Street,Z Street co-founder Lori Lowenthal Marcus told WND.J Street does not deserve to be considered a mainstream pro-Israel organization as it has demonstrated repeatedly that it is pro-Ishmael and not pro-Israel.The Powerline blog previously documented how far-leftist Israelis are influential in J Street leadership, including former Knesset Speaker Avrum Burg, who generated controversy when he stated, To define the state of Israel as a Jewish state is the key to its end.Another key J Street member, Mideast expert Henry Siegman, has compared Israel to apartheid South Africa.

GENESIS 19:5
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

ROMANS 1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:(HOMOSEXUALITY,AND ALL SEX SINS)
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:(LESBIENS)
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,(SODOMITES) and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.(AIDS ETC)
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

TROUBLESPEAK-Muslim student adviser: Death penalty for gays-Vanderbilt religious staff says,I go with what Islam teaches January 29, 2010 12:20 am Eastern
By Bob Unruh 2010 WorldNetDaily

Vanderbilt University is distancing itself from a Muslim chaplain after he told a gathering of students homosexuality is punishable by death under Islam. I don't have a choice as a Muslim to accept or reject teachings. I go with what Islam teaches, said Awadh A. Binhazim, who is listed on the Vanderbilt website as Adjunct Professor of Islam at the Divinity School and an adviser to the Muslim Student Association. His comments came earlier this week at a diversity event for students. He was asked directly, Under Islamic law is it punishable by death if you are a homosexual?

Binhazim said, Yes. It is punishable by death. The school immediately distanced itself from the professor, issuing a statement to WND that denied he was an employee and reaffirming Vanderbilt's non-discriminatory policies.Vanderbilt University is dedicated to a policy of non-discrimination on the basis of race or sexuality, said the statement dispatched by e-mail from the school to WND today. Awadh A. Binhazim is not and has never been a Vanderbilt employee, and is not paid by the university. He is the university's Muslim chaplain under a working agreement that is similar to those signed with chaplains of other faiths at Vanderbilt. This working agreement requires Binhazim to observe Vanderbilt rules, including its non-discriminatory policies. Vanderbilt does not limit the free speech of its students, faculty, staff or its chaplains in any way.Religious Life page in the Vanderbilt Office of the Dean of Students profiling Binhazim His profile on the Vanderbilt Dean of Students website explained Binhazim was born and raised in Kenya and studied Islam in a madrassah as a child and later at King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia. He earned a master's degree at the University of Nairobi and his Ph.D. in pathology at the University of Georgia in Athens.

He is the founder and program director of a series of courses (offered for free to those interested) on Islam held in Nashville, Tennessee. Within these courses as well as at the Divinity School of Vanderbilt University, Professor Binhazim teaches about Islamic beliefs, spirituality, and moral code of Islam, monotheism, Muslim cultures, and civilizations, the description continues. His free course at Vanderbilt called Introduction to Islam is to begin Feb. 5: University advertisement for Introduction to Islam course. The questions, at a student event held by the Muslim Students Association and the Army ROTC, were asked by Devin Saucier, president of Vanderbilt's chapter of Youth for Western Civilization.

He told WND it was a 30-minute, roses and butterflies overview of Islam.Saucier said in a blog he wondered about the unholy alliance between Muslims and leftists – how could the latter, who fervently support multiculturalism, gay marriage, and gender equality, ally with the former, who support religious and cultural supremacy, traditional marriage, and the oppression of women? When I saw that the Muslim Students Association (MSA) was hosting an event titled Common Ground: Being Muslim in the Military which was sponsored by the Project Dialogue committee, I knew it would be ripe grounds for me to expose the gullibility of leftists who grovel at the altars of tolerance and acceptance,he wrote. Saucier documented the question-and-answer exchange on video. The reaction has just started to develop, but Saucier wrote that immediately after the meeting a rather flustered girl demanded to know why he asked the question. Why would you ask some irrelevant question like that? she said.I think my question was quite relevant, since there are a number of homosexuals in the military,Saucier replied. So? she responded. Well let me put it this way. If I was a homosexual in the military, I would want to know if the religion of the person fighting next to me demands my death. That would be significant to me, he said. Well I learned in Sunday school that Christianity condemns homosexuality too! the girl said. Yes, Christianity does consider homosexuality sinful, and Christians pray for homosexuals because of it, while Islamic law says they should be punished with death. See the difference? he responded.

GDP rise fails to stop oil price drop By Chris Kahn, Ap Energy Writer – JAN 29,10

NEW YORK – A jump in U.S. gross domestic product wasn't enough to ease concerns Friday about falling energy consumption as oil prices dropped below $74 a barrel.
Benchmark crude for March delivery gave up 30 cents at $73.34 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Earlier in the day, the Commerce Department reported a 5.7 percent annual growth rate in the fourth quarter, the fastest pace since 2003. The expansion was driven by rising exports and business spending on equipment and software. But the economic expansion hasn't led to a rise in energy consumption so far. The country is still burning less gasoline than a year ago, and its appetite for petroleum products has dropped for four straight weeks, the Energy Information Administration said Wednesday. This could be more of a warning signal, Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research, said of the EIA report. The economic growth rate is expected to cool later this year, Lynch said, and it's scary to think where oil demand will be then. The dollar also strengthened for a fourth straight day as financial troubles in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland pushed the euro lower. Crude, priced in U.S. currency, tends to fall as the dollar rises and makes oil barrels more expensive to buy for investors holding foreign currency.

At the pump, retail gasoline prices continued to slide, giving up a half penny overnight to a new national average of $2.685 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Gasoline has been falling for more than two weeks, but a gallon of regular unleaded is still 6.2 cents more expensive than it was a month ago and 84.2 cents higher than the same time last year.In other Nymex trading in February contracts, heating oil fell less than a penny to $1.9125 a gallon and gasoline lost 1.23 cents at $1.9051 a gallon. The March contract for natural gas rose 5.1 cents to $5.189 per 1,000 cubic feet.In London, Brent crude for March delivery dropped 29 cents to $71.84 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

A look at global economic developments By The Associated Press The Associated Press –Thu Jan 28, 2:31 pm ET-A look at economic developments and activity in major stock markets around the world Thursday:

LONDON — World stock markets fell after economic data reignited fears about the pace of the U.S. economic recovery, while the euro slid to a six-month low against the dollar as traders fretted about the public finances in Portugal as well as Greece. In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares closed down 1.4 percent to 5,145.74 while Germany's DAX plunged 1.8 percent to 5,540.33 The CAC-40 in France slipped 1.9 percent to 3,688.79. Europe's main markets had been trading higher before sentiment was hit by the news that U.S. jobless claims last week were higher than expected and factory orders in December rose by less than anticipated.

DAVOS, Switzerland — Laying out his strategy for long-term economic growth, a possible future leader of China said Beijing would seek to boost domestic consumer demand to drive its booming economy and move away from an over-reliance on export markets. Vice Premier Li Keqiang said China's market of over 1 billion people would open up gradually in the coming years, with monopolies broken up and competition encouraged, benefiting the whole world. In a wide-ranging speech introducing him to many leading figures in business and politics, Li said China needed a new development model.

LONDON — Economic sentiment in the 16 countries that use the euro rose in January for the tenth month running to near its long-term average, the European Commission said. In its monthly survey of economic conditions, the Commission said its economic sentiment indicator rose by 1.6 points in the eurozone to 95.7, largely because of an improvement in the industrial sector. At its low point in March, the indicator stood at 70.6. The Commission said Italy and the Netherlands saw the biggest improvements in sentiment during January whereas in Germany, France and Spain the advance was modest. For the wider 27-country EU, which includes non-euro members like Britain and Sweden, the economic sentiment indicator rose by 2.1 points to 97.1. As in the eurozone, that was the tenth straight rise from March's trough of 68.

FRANKFURT — German unemployment jumped in January to 8.6 percent, or 3.617 million people, official data showed Thursday, as Europe's biggest economy continues to fight its way out of its worst economic crisis in decades. The Federal Labor Office said 342,000 more people were unemployed compared with December, when the jobless rate was 7.8 percent, with unusually early and cold winter weather contributing to a loss in jobs and productivity. Seasonally adjusted, the unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent.

VILNIUS, Lithuania — Lithuania's economy shrank by a staggering 15 percent in 2009 due to the global recession's impact, the country's worst performance since it regained its independence in 1991. Statistics Lithuania said the decline eased slightly in the fourth quarter, when the economy contracted 13 percent year-on-year — compared with a 14.2 percent annual fall in the third quarter and an astonishing 19.5 percent collapse in the second — suggesting the economy has hit a bottom and could be slowly recovering.

TOKYO — Japanese retail sales declined for the 16th straight month in December, as consumers in the world's second-biggest economy stayed cautious amid falling wages and a lackluster job market. Sales retreated 0.3 percent from a year earlier, following a 1.1 percent fall in November, the government said. Meanwhile, Japanese shares rebounded, snapping a four-day losing streak as investors took heart from the Federal Reserve's more confident assessment of the U.S. economy, while Toyota Motor Corp. tumbled again on a widening recall problem. The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average rose 1.6 percent to 10,414.29. The broader Topix index added 0.7 percent to 914.32.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine economy grew at its slowest pace in 11 years in 2009 as the global economic crunch hit exports and investment, officials said. Growth in gross domestic product faded to 0.9 percent in 2009 from 3.8 percent in 2008 — the weakest since the economy shrank 0.6 percent in 1998 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. Last year's growth was still within the government's 0.8 percent to 1.8 percent target and shows the Philippine economy's resilience, said acting National Economic Planning Secretary Augusto Santos.

SHANGHAI — Chinese shares rebounded on bargain-hunting following four losing sessions, led by developers. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.3 percent to close at 2,994.14. The Shenzhen Composite Index for China's smaller second exchange jumped 0.9 percent to 1,113.73.

Gazprom, Hungarian bank sign South Stream deal
JAN 29,10

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Russian gas monopoly Gazprom and the state-owned Hungarian Development Bank signed a deal Friday setting up a company to develop Hungary's part of the South Stream gas pipeline project. The agreement is considered another step in Russia's efforts to consolidate its position as Europe's primary gas supplier and undermine the alternative Nabucco pipeline plan backed by the European Union.Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia have also signed up for South Stream, while press reports in Russia say Austria is expected to enter the deal soon.South Stream would exit Russia under the Black Sea and enter the EU through Bulgaria. A northwest route would supply Serbia, Hungary and Austria, while another would ship gas west through Greece and into southern Italy.Hungary joined the Russian-led project in Feb. 2008 and agreed to set up a joint venture with Russia to finance, build and operate the pipeline in Hungary.Friday's agreement was signed by Gazprom's deputy chief executive Alexander Medvedev and MFB development bank chief executive Janos Eros.

We have no doubt that South Stream will become an extra safeguard for the reliability and flexibility for Russian gas supply to European markets, Medvedev said in a statement posted on the company's Web site.South Stream's construction — funded chiefly by Gazprom and Italy's Eni — is planned to start this year and to be completed by 2015, carrying natural gas to Central and Western Europe while bypassing Ukraine.Pricing disputes between Russia and Ukraine, a key transit country, caused gas shortages in Europe last winter.Despite its role in South Stream, Hungary has also repeatedly insisted on its commitment to the Nabucco plan, which would deliver gas from the Caspian Sea region westward via the Caucasus, bypassing Russia, and into Bulgaria via Turkey.Friday's deal was completed during a visit to Hungary by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, who took part in a session of a committee promoting economic cooperation between the two countries.

Medicine running out at Haiti hospitals, clinics By BEN FOX, Associated Press Writer – JAN 29,10

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Doctors and aid workers are running dangerously low of supplies in Haiti's capital and in the countryside, complicating efforts to treat 200,000 people in need of post-surgery care following the earthquake and increasing the potential of many more deaths due to infection and disease. As days turn to weeks, doctors struggling to keep up with demand in devastated hospitals and improvised clinics are warning of a looming public health calamity as earthquake survivors with untreated injuries fail to get proper attention, Elisabeth Byrs, of the U.N.'s humanitarian coordination office said Friday in Geneva.Poor sanitation can also kill as tens of thousands of Haitians living in squalid camps with limited water, she said.Medical teams also are seeing a big shift in the types of cases they are treating, World Health Organization spokesman Paul Garwood said Friday in Geneva. He said there are a growing number of diarrhea cases, as well as unconfirmed reports of a rise in measles and tetanus cases in resettlement camps — a particularly worrying development because of the high population density in the camps. The health care system in Haiti has been terribly affected by the earthquake, said Joe Lowry, a spokesman for the International Federation of the Red Cross. Medical staff have been killed and injured, hospitals destroyed and stocks damaged and depleted.Dr. Nancy Fleurancois, volunteering at a damaged hospital in the Haitian coastal town of Jacmel, said Thursday that her team is treating 500 people a day — many for the first time since the Jan. 12 quake — and desperately needs antibiotics and surgical supplies. You see people come here and they are at death's door, said Fleurancois, a Haitian-American from Newark, Delaware. More help is needed.Anthony Banbury, deputy head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti, said during a tour of Jacmel that he would try to resolve Fleurancois' shortages — but he noted there is a grave need for medicine all over Haiti.

Those needs are competing with the urgency of delivering tons of food, water and tents which, like the medicine, are delayed by bottlenecks as a result of damaged roads and ports and a tiny airport that is unable to accommodate the backlog of flights waiting to deliver supplies. Coordination remains a problem, leaving big gaps in the distribution of food and medicine. An estimated 200,000 family-size tents are needed as temporary shelter for the homeless, international agencies say, but only a fraction of that number are in Haiti or on their way. In Jacmel alone, more than 20,000 people are homeless.Food is also still in short supply: The U.N. World Food Program says it has delivered more than 4 million rations, equivalent to more than 13 million meals, to 500,000 people. But it projects that 2 million Haitians need food aid — now and until December.Desperate Haitians long accustomed to relying on themselves rather than government handouts have resorted to looting the collapsed stores in Port-au-Prince. Armed Haitian police have tried to stop them by firing guns in the air and threatening them with their batons. Several people have been injured. On Friday, hundreds of demonstrators near downtown Port-au-Prince protested against the police actions while cheering U.S. troops who have confined their activities to clearing rubble.Officials estimate the quake killed as many as 200,000 people and injured another 200,000, including thousands who required amputation of damaged limbs and now must have postoperative care to prevent infection. At the chaotic General Hospital in downtown Port-au-Prince, amputees groan in pain while recovering in canvas tents in the courtyard of the damaged structure. There is a shortage of painkillers as well as crutches, wheelchairs and physical therapy equipment, said Dr. Bob Norris, who leads an International Medical Corps team of physicians. We have a country full of people with new amputations who have to learn how to live their lives, Norris said.At the Bernard Mevs Hospital near the airport, administrator Kathleen Sejour said doctors are short of such basic supplies as gloves, gauze and antiseptic as well as malaria medicine and treatment for amputees.

There are too many patients we're seeing who have malaria,Sejour said. Most of the kids right now have it.At a clinic run by U.S.-based ACTS World Relief and a Haitian group called Operation Hope in Carrefour, a hard-hit Port-au-Prince district, volunteer Dr. Laura Asher said just about everything doctors need is lacking as they treat hundreds. She said she had pleaded with international aid agencies and better-funded private groups for help. It's a constant need, a constant need. Every day we go out and beg,Asher, of Silver Spring, Maryland, said as patients waited in the shade of the front yard of the clinic, which has been set up in a house. To be sure, there are any number of small groups providing badly needed medical aid, and not all are running low. Dr. Margaret Degand, who runs a private clinic in Petionville, said her depleted stocks were replenished by a French humanitarian organization. Officials from both Doctors Without Borders and the International Federation of the Red Cross said both organizations have adequate medical equipment and supplies. But even some of the largest institutions are feeling the strain. The Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort reached its care limit after treating more than 3,000 people, Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, head of the U.S. military's Southern Command, told reporters Thursday. U.S. authorities are now planning a new treatment center for up to 5,000 patients on land provided by the Haitian government. Hamas: Israel kills top operative in Dubai By ALBERT AJI, Associated Press Writer – JAN 29,10

DAMASCUS, Syria – A senior Hamas commander was assassinated last week in a Dubai hotel room by electrocution, the Palestinian militant group said Friday. It accused Israeli agents of killing him and vowed to avenge his death.Hamas said Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was one of the founders of the group's military wing that has been responsible for attacks and suicide bombings targeting Israelis since the 1980s.

Dubai's government confirmed al-Mabhouh was found dead in a hotel room on Jan. 20, a day after entering the Gulf city. It said in a statement that initial investigations show the crime was likely committed by a professional criminal gang, and that the suspects left the country before the body was discovered. Most of the suspects held European passports, the statement said.Hamas' top leader, Khaled Mashaal, accused Israel of being behind al-Mabhouh's death, and pledged to hit back.We will retaliate for the blood of this man who fought you (Israel) for 30 years, from one battle to the next, and was arming the resistance and supporting it night and day, Mashaal said while standing next to al-Mabhouh's coffin at his funeral in Syria. You (Israelis) have hurt us with his killing, but it is an ongoing war between us, he said. This is an open war.Israel's government had no immediate comment. The few details that emerged Friday about al-Mabhouh's death were somewhat conflicting.

Talal Nassar, an official in Hamas' media office in Damascus, said al-Mabhouh had been poisoned and electrocuted in his hotel room in Dubai. He did not elaborate.
Al-Mabhouh's brother, Hussein, 49, who lives in the Jebaliya refugee camp in Gaza, said his brother died by electric shock and suffocation with a piece of cloth. He said that his brother had been on a mission for Hamas when he was killed.Hussein al-Mabhouh added that his brother had survived two Israeli assassination attempts, including an attempt six months ago to poison him in Beirut that left him unconscious for 30 hours. It was expected that the Mossad would try to kill him, he told The AP, referring to Israel's external intelligence agency.Originally from the Gaza Strip, al-Mabhouh lived in Syria and was passing through Dubai when he was killed late Jan. 19 or early Jan. 20, said Izzat Rashaq, a top member of Hamas' exiled leadership in Damascus.Rashaq told The Associated Press that Hamas delayed the announcement about al-Mabhouh's death because it was trying to reach the Israeli agents who implemented this operation.Al-Mabhouh was buried Friday at the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, near Damascus. More than 2,000 Palestinians attended the funeral.

The coffin was wrapped in a green Hamas flag and a portrait of al-Mabhouh was placed at the entrance to the mosque with the words: Your fingerprints are everywhere ... we promise to continue in your path.A Hamas statement said al-Mabhouh was involved in the kidnapping and killing of two Israeli soldiers in 1989 and that he was still playing a continuous role in supporting his brothers in the resistance inside the occupied homeland at the time of his death. Hamas rules Gaza but has leaders and operatives based in Syria and elsewhere. The group's members abroad have been targeted in the past. The leader of its Damascus-based politburo, Khaled Mashaal, survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Amman, Jordan, in 1997. Last month, two Hamas men were killed in a mysterious blast in Beirut. Hamas said at the time that Israel was an obvious suspect but stopped short of openly accusing Israel of the killings. The Mossad never openly discusses its operations and Israel's government typically does not comment on incidents in which the Mossad's involvement is suspected. Israel is also suspected of being behind the assassination of a senior military commander from the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah in Damascus in 2008.

Dubai has for years been known as a low-risk hideaway for disgraced politicians and deposed foreign leaders, but that image was shattered last March, when Chechnya's Sulim Yamadayev — a former rebel in the republic's long conflict with Russia who switched sides but then fell out with the territory's pro-Moscow leader — was shot dead in a Dubai underground parking lot. The Emirates backs Hamas' rival, the West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, but does not list the militant group as a terrorist organization. Emirati officials have met several times with Hamas representatives in the capital Abu Dhabi. Associated Press Writers Matti Friedman in Jerusalem, Mohammed Daraghmeh in Ramallah, West Bank, Rizek Abdel Jawad in Gaza, Zeina Karam in Beirut and Barbara Surk in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed to this report.

Clinton: China risks isolation over Iran By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer – JAN 29,10

PARIS – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned China on Friday it risks diplomatic isolation and disruption to its energy supplies unless it helps keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.Speaking in Paris, Clinton said she and others who support additional sanctions on Iran for refusing to prove it has peaceful nuclear intentions are lobbying China to back new U.N. penalties on the Iranian government. She said she understood China's reluctance to impose new penalties on Iran, its third-largest supplier of oil. But she stressed that a nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the Persian Gulf and imperil oil shipments China gets from other Arab states in the region. There is a new push for sanctions at the U.N. because of Iran's continued refusal to engage on the matter with the five permanent members of the Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — and Germany.Administration officials have invited new talks with Iran, but with no sign that Iran wants to do business, the focus has turned to penalties.

As we move away from the engagement track, which has not produced the result that some had hoped for, and move forward on the pressure and sanctions track, China will be under a lot of pressure to recognize the destabilizing impact that a nuclear-armed Iran would have in the Gulf, from which they receive a significant percentage of their oil supplies, Clinton said. The United States is the most visible leader in the new push for U.N. Security Council sanctions, and Clinton spent much of her time in Europe this week lobbying major powers whose support she needs to pass and enforce new economic penalties. Some of the additional measures that will be proposed target elements of Iran's powerful militia structure, U.S. officials said.

The Obama administration has said Iran appears bent on developing nuclear weapons, although Iran claims its nuclear work is peaceful. Iran is thought to have stockpiled more than enough nuclear material to manufacture a single bomb, and more is being made daily.

The risks of an Iranian bomb are manifold, Clinton said.

It will produce an arms race,in the Persian Gulf, and Israel will feel its very existence threatened, Clinton said in response to a question from an audience member during a speech at a French military academy. All of that is incredibly dangerous. The United States has cautioned Israel publicly against a pre-emptive strike on Iran's known nuclear facilities, arguing that such an attack would invite an arms race and retaliation.China has traditionally resisted U.N. Security Council sanctions, saying they are counterproductive and harm efforts to persuade Iran to prove its claim that the nuclear program is peaceful.Clinton met Thursday in London with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to make the case to move ahead with sanctions at the United Nations. U.S. officials said Yang's response was noncommittal. In Paris, Clinton said her message to the Chinese had been this: We understand that right now it seems counterproductive to you to sanction a country from which you get so much of the natural resources your growing economy needs. But think about the longer-term implications.

New Russian stealth fighter makes first flight By Steve Gutterman – Fri Jan 29, 8:27 am ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia test-flew a long-awaited new fighter aircraft on Friday, determined to challenge the United States for technical superiority in the skies and impress weapons buyers. The fifth-generation stealth fighter -- Russia's first all-new warplane since the collapse of the Soviet Union plunged the defense industry into poverty and disarray -- flew for 47 minutes, planemaker Sukhoi said. It's a remarkable event, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told his cabinet, but he suggested the plane still needed work. There is very much to be done, in part as regards the engine, Putin said. But the fact that the plane is already in the air is a big step forward.Russia's main television networks led news programs with reports of the flight and showed footage of the needle-nosed, camouflage-painted plane taking off from a snow-lined airstrip at a Sukhoi factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East. The plane performed very well. All our expectations for this first flight were met, Sukhoi spokeswoman Olga Kayukova said on Rossiya 24 television. The premiere was a success.

Foreign journalists were not invited.

Fifth-generation aircraft are invisible to radar, have advanced flight and weapons control systems and can cruise at supersonic speeds. The new plane is Moscow's answer to the U.S.-built F-22 Raptor stealth fighter -- the world's only fifth-generation fighter yet in service -- which first flew in 1997.Putin said the plane would first be delivered to the Defense Ministry in 2013 and serial production would start in 2015. Analysts have said it would probably be five to seven years before Russia's military gets to fly the new fighter.Successful development of the fighter, which Rossiya 24 said has been tentatively dubbed the T-50, is crucial to showing Russia can challenge U.S. technology. The 1991 Soviet collapse ushered in a cash-strapped time of troubles for Russia's military. Its aircraft makers have been building warplanes based on updated Soviet-era designs.

EMBARRASSING SETBACKS

Defense spending increased in the oil-fueled period of economic growth during the 2000-2008 presidency of Putin, who has encouraged pride in Russia's military might.
The military has continued to suffer embarrassing and sometimes deadly setbacks since the nuclear submarine Kursk sank in 2000, killing all 118 seamen aboard.
Several failed tests of the submarine-launched Bulava (Mace) intercontinental ballistic missile, touted by Putin as able to pierce any air defense, have troubled the Kremlin. The Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified source as saying the new Russian plane had lowered and raised its landing gear twice during the flight and added that the American F-35 fifth-generation jet couldn't do that (on its test flight).Lieutenant Colonel Marcel de Haas, Russian security researcher at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael, was not convinced of the plane's bright future. My impression is that this new fighter plane is also more propaganda than a real expectancy, he told Reuters by e-mail. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov told the cabinet more work had to be done on the engine and the armaments system. Neither he nor Putin went into details.

The new plane is important for future Russian arms sales.

In a statement on the company website sukhoi.org, Sukhoi director Mikhail Pogosyan said the company planned to develop its fifth-generation fighter program further with India, its biggest client for existing planes. Sukhoi is Russia's largest exporter of military planes and accounts for about a quarter of the country's annual arms sales, which reached $7.4 billion last year. Besides India and China, existing clients for Russia's weapons include U.S. foes such as Iran, Syria and Venezuela, and their purchase of an advanced new fighter could cause concern in the United States and its allies. The U.S. Congress has banned export sales of the F-22.

Bin Laden blasts US for climate change By SALAH NASRAWI, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jan 29, 9:54 am ET

CAIRO – Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday. In the tape, broadcast in part on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden warned of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring the wheels of the American economy to a halt.He blamed Western industrialized nations for hunger, desertification and floods across the globe, and called for drastic solutions to global warming, and not solutions that partially reduce the effect of climate change.Bin Laden has mentioned climate change and global warning in past messages, but the latest tape was his first dedicated to the topic. The speech, which included almost no religious rhetoric, could be an attempt by the terror leader to give his message an appeal beyond Islamic militants. The al-Qaida leader also targeted the U.S. economy in the recording, calling for a boycott of American products and an end to the dollar's domination as a world currency. We should stop dealings with the dollar and get rid of it as soon as possible, he said.I know that this has great consequences and grave ramifications, but it is the only means to liberate humanity from slavery and dependence on America. He argued that such steps would also hamper Washington's war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The new message, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, comes after a bin Laden tape released last week in which he endorsed a failed attempt to blow up an American airliner on Christmas Day.

Blair says no secret deal with Bush to invade Iraq by Alice Ritchie - JAN 29,10

LONDON (AFP) – Former British prime minister Tony Blair denied Friday he struck a covert deal with George W. Bush to invade Iraq and told an inquiry into the war he was convinced Baghdad had weapons of mass destruction.Giving eagerly awaited evidence in London, Blair insisted he backed the US president in the 2003 war because Saddam Hussein had flouted UN resolutions -- rejecting assertions the sole objective had been to remove the Iraqi leader.Blair said Saddam was a monster who had used chemical weapons on his own people and after a decade of UN efforts to disarm him,we couldn't run the risk of such a regime being allowed to develop WMD. Related article: Saddam was a monster says Blair.Almost seven years after the invasion and six months after British troops left Iraq, Blair's decision to go to war remains highly controversial, and hundreds of protesters demonstrated outside the inquiry venue.Inside, sitting before the panel in a navy blue suit and red tie, Blair was asked whether he had pledged Britain's support for war during an April 2002meeting with Bush at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Blair denied this, saying he had told Bush we are going to be with you in confronting and dealing with this threat of Iraqi WMD.How we did that was an open question, and even at that stage I was raising the issue of going to the UN, he said.
Blair admitted he and the US president had discussed the military option but only if the United Nations route failed, adding:The position was not a covert position, it was an open position.Britain needed to be involved because it was potentially threatened by any proliferation of WMD, and if military action was the right thing to do, Blair said he wanted to be in there right alongside Washington. When no WMD were found in Iraq, the British government faced questions about the intelligence used to make the case for war, including a key September 2002 dossier which claimed Saddam could launch WMD within 45 minutes. It has since emerged this claim referred to battlefield weapons, and Blair admitted it should have been corrected. But he insisted Britain and many other nations believed Iraq had WMD, and that after the September 11, 2001 attacks, he could not risk the possibility Saddam would pass them on to terror groups.Up to September 11 we thought he was a risk, but we thought it was worth trying to contain it. The crucial thing after September 11 is that the calculus of risk changed, Blair said.Blair was asked about a recent TV interview in which he appeared to say he would have invaded Iraq even if he had known WMD would not be found, leading some commentators to suggest he was intent on removing Saddam regardless.I didn't use the words regime change in that interview and I didn't mean in any sense to change the basis (for war),he said.

It was in no sense a change of position, he added. The position was that it was the breach of UN resolutions on WMD... It was then and it remains. The invasion was based on UN Security Council resolution 1441, which in November 2002 gave Saddam a final deadline to disarm, but former British government lawyers have said this did not provide a legal basis for war.Asked about this, Blair insisted: I think all countries who took military action believed they had a sound legal basis for doing so.They tried but failed to get a second UN resolution explicitly authorising force, and Blair said: We got to the point in the middle of March when frankly we had to decide.Anti-war protesters outside the conference centre where the inquiry is held waved placards saying Bliar and chanted Tony Blair war criminal. Related article: Blair slips past protesters.Among them were relatives of some of the 179 British troops killed in the conflict. Other relatives joined the public audience watching him inside. Many expressed frustration at Blair's evidence, including Theresea Evans, whose son Llywelyn died in Iraq on the first day of the conflict. Related article: Tears, anger for soldiers' families as Blair talks.I would like him to look into my eyes and say I'm sorry. But he hasn't got the guts,Evans told AFP.

Palestinians irate over new Jerusalem tram By KARIN LAUB, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jan 29, 2:43 am ET

JERUSALEM – Jerusalem's first light rail starts test runs this spring, with its sleek silver cars gliding across the city and promising to relieve the perpetual congestion. But Palestinians see no reason to celebrate. They hope to derail the $1 billion tram because they fear it will further entrench Israeli control over east Jerusalem, the part of the city they want as a capital. They've asked a French court to force two French multinationals, Veolia and Alstom, out of the project and are urging Arab countries to cancel contracts with the two companies. The 9-mile (14-kilometer) line runs from Jewish west Jerusalem to the largest of several settlements Israel built in the traditionally Arab eastern sector after capturing it in 1967.

Palestinians say Israel is creating more facts on the ground with the tram, just as it has with its ever-expanding Jewish enclaves in east Jerusalem that are now home to 180,000 Israelis. The purpose of this project is to make a bridge between the settlements ... and west Jerusalem and they use our land, Palestinian land, said Ahmed Rweidi, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The train is illegal and the settlements are illegal.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he's not willing to give up any part of Jerusalem, taking a harder line than some of his predecessors, and insists Israel has the right to build anywhere in the city.

Government spokesman Mark Regev said the light rail will serve all of Jerusalem's residents and beyond, Arab and Jew alike. The campaign against the train is part of a wider attempt by Palestinian activists and politicians to use new ways to challenge Israeli rule over the lands they want for a state. Frustrated by the failure of nearly two decades of peace talks, they are increasingly trying to hit Israel where it hurts — the pocket book.Palestinian security forces have been confiscating goods made in Jewish settlements from West Bank shops. Dozens of Palestinian grassroots groups have been orchestrating a boycott Israel campaign since 2005.Inspired by the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, they say they've gained momentum, particularly after the international outcry over Israel's war against Gaza's Hamas rulers last winter.Israeli officials say the campaign has failed to dent Israel's economy and bristle at comparisons to apartheid-era South Africa. Jewish activists have been pushing back, branding the attempted boycott as anti-Semitic.The fight over the rail line comes amid an especially bitter deadlock over the fate of Jerusalem.Netanyahu's refusal to stop settlement construction in east Jerusalem is one of the reasons Abbas won't resume peace talks that broke off more than a year ago.

But stopping the trains will be an uphill battle.

Tracks have already been laid on most of the route, which will have 23 stations and link west Jerusalem with Pisgat Zeev, the largest Jewish settlement in the eastern sector. Forty-four cars are parked at a depot in east Jerusalem, ready for a test phase that is to begin around March and last several months. The Palestine Liberation Organization has asked a French court to order Veolia and Alstom to drop out of the project, on grounds that it violates the Geneva Convention's prohibition of an occupier changing the nature of occupied lands. The two firms are members, along with Israeli companies, of the City Pass consortium which is building the rail line and is to operate it until 2036. The court ruled in December that it has jurisdiction, but has not set a date for the next hearing. The Abbas government is also urging Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to cut business ties with the firms. Among other projects in the region, Alstom is involved in building a rail line between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Palestinian officials say they will raise the issue at a March summit of the Arab League. This is the least Arabs can do to support our rights in Jerusalem, said Rweidi, the Abbas adviser. PLO officials said they were unaware of any actions taken by Arab governments. Saudi Arabia has kept silent about the pressure. Veolia officials in Israel told AP the company is in the process of transferring its 5 percent share in the Jerusalem rail project to Israel's Dan bus company. But they insist it's strictly a business decision. The proposed sale would have to be approved by the consortium, but that may take several years.

Alstom, which is providing the rail cars, defended the project.

Spokesman Philippe Kasse rejected claims that the tram creates a new reality on the ground, noting that buses now service the future train route. We are told (by critics) that this tramway is a weapon designed to make irreversible the annexation of east Jerusalem and the colonization policy led by Israel, he wrote in an e-mailed response.Replacing an existing bus line by a tramway is neither using warfare nor establishing a political fait accompli.Jerusalem municipality spokesman Stephan Miller defended the rail project as beneficial to both Arabs and Jews. The train will make three stops in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat. Some residents there expressed hope it will ease chronic congestion, while others complained that the tracks use up two lanes of their four-lane main road. Hind Khoury, a Palestinian diplomat in France involved in the legal battle against the tram, said the campaign is a measure of Palestinian frustration. In the last few years, we were still hoping that the peace process would be credible enough to come to a conclusion, she said. Now we are taking the legal route.

Honduras' new gov't finds nation bankrupt
Thu Jan 28, 11:15 pm ET

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Honduras' new administration began its term Thursday saying the nation is bankrupt and will likely need international financial assistance to recover from months of diplomatic isolation over its June coup. The first day of the new government also was marked by early morning police raids that resulted in 41 people being detained and several weapons seized in the capital.Newly inaugurated President Porfirio Lobo swore in his Cabinet, including Finance Minister William Chong, who said the administration of interim president Roberto Micheletti left office with only about $50 million in government coffers.Chong said the already impoverished country was bankrupt following months of isolation and cutoffs of international aid prompted by the coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya in a political fight over changing the constitution. Zelaya gave up his refuge in the Brazilian Embassy and left Honduras on Wednesday, the final day of the term he was elected to.Chong said the Lobo administration will have to approach international lending agencies like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund for loans.

In Tegucigalpa, the capital, police carried out 23 searches that led to the detentions and the capture of weapons that included a grenade launcher. Police Commissioner Leonel Sauceda did not specify what other kinds of weapons were seized or what charges those detained might face. It was not clear if those detained were Zelaya's supporters.Lobo, who won the November presidential election that had been scheduled before Zelaya was toppled, spent the early part of the day talking with foreign diplomats who attended his inauguration Wednesday.Arturo Valenzuela, the assistant U.S. secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, said it was important for Honduras to create a truth commission to investigate the events that led to the coup.Speaking in a teleconference from Washington, Valenzuela said Lobo has put together a broad Cabinet, including even candidates who ran against him. What is pending is the last step, which is the truth commission. Some measure of normality returned, at least in the several blocks around the Brazilian Embassy, where Zelaya holed up after sneaking back into the country in September.Once cordoned off by soldiers, the upscale area was opened to traffic again Thursday, following Zelaya's departure to the Dominican Republic.

Heavy snow, ice bury southern Plains, cut power By TIM TALLEY, Associated Press Writer – JAN 29,10

OKLAHOMA CITY – A storm that toppled power lines, closed major highways and buried parts of the southern Plains in heavy ice and snow began moving into the South on Friday, leaving tens of thousands of people in the dark — possibly for several more days.Winter storm warnings were in effect from New Mexico to North Carolina, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe declared a state of emergency. The storm threatened to dump up to a foot of snow across the region after leaving 13 inches in the northern Texas Panhandle, where nearly all of Interstate 40 from the Texas-Oklahoma line to New Mexico was closed. The closure stranded dozens of people at the Travel Centers of America truck stop along I-40 in Sayre in far western Oklahoma. Ken Halford of Nashville, Tenn., who was driving to Las Vegas with his wife, was stranded in Oklahoma City after officials closed the interstate. Our goal was to be in Vegas by Sunday, and we were going to stop in Flagstaff, (Ariz.) and do the Grand Canyon tour, but we'll probably have to cut that out, Halford said. We'll just sit tight here until we get the word that I-40 is back open, and then we'll head on west.Heavy ice brought down electrical lines and trees limbs, leaving nearly 142,000 homes and businesses in Oklahoma without power Friday, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

In some places, as far you can see there are hundreds of utility poles on the ground, said Andrea Chancellor, spokeswoman for Public Service Co. of Oklahoma. She said it could be five days before electricity is restored to all customers.Flights were canceled Friday morning at airports in Oklahoma City and Little Rock, Ark.
Arkansas State Police warned people who were driving to work on Friday to be prepared to be stranded. Spokesman Bill Sadler encouraged motorists to bring blankets, water and snacks with them and to line up a hotel room within walking distance or make other plans for an overnight stay. The snow, sleet and freezing rain were expected to crawl east through Friday. Up to a foot of snow was expected in Arkansas near the Missouri state line, northern Tennessee near the Kentucky and Virginia borders and western North Carolina, according to the National Weather Service.Freezing rain began falling in Memphis shortly after dawn Friday, and by midmorning it was snowing steadily in Nashville, 200 miles to the east.Jeff Hooker, who manages a Piggly Wiggly in the Memphis area, said some employees were afraid to drive in the snow, so he offered to pick them up in his truck. Customers were waiting outside to buy groceries when the store opened at 7 a.m.People here in Memphis, if there's just a little flight of bad weather they think they're going to get snowed in for a week, he said.

More snow also was expected in Texas and Oklahoma, where dozens of shelters were opened for those who needed a warm place to stay, including First United Methodist Church in Hobart, about 120 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. Pastor Kyle Clark said downed trees and utility poles littered the slick roadways and most of the town of about 4,000 residents had no electricity. We've got gas heat and we are illuminating the place with candles, Clark said late Thursday.Farther southwest in Altus, home to about 7,000 residences and businesses, power was out except at the hospital and other emergency operations with generators, said emergency management director Lloyd Colston.More than two dozen flights were canceled Friday morning at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City following the cancellation of more than 100 flights Thursday because of concerns about ice buildup on planes, according to the airport's Web site. In Arkansas, Little Rock National Airport reported that a number of flights were canceled.Flights also were canceled Thursday in Tulsa and in Texas out of Lubbock, Amarillo and Wichita Falls. The Texas Department of Transportation closed I-40 east and west of Amarillo on Friday and a few other major roadways. Downed power lines and icy, dangerous road conditions also temporarily closed a 50-mile stretch of I-44 southwest of Oklahoma City and parts of I-40 in far western Oklahoma and eastern New Mexico on Thursday. Associated Press writers Chuck Bartels in Little Rock, Ark., Betsy Blaney in Lubbock, Texas, Travis Loller in Nashville, Tenn., and Heather Clark in Albuquerque, N.M., contributed to this report.

AMERICA (POLITICAL BABYLON)

EZEKIEL 39:21
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

ISAIAH 18:1-2
1 Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia:
2 That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

JEREMIAH 50:11,37,12
11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;(BACKSLIDERS)
37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.(A NATION OF MINGLED PEOPLE)
12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed:(MOTHER ENGLAND) behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.

JEREMIAH 51:13,7,53
13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.
7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.

REVELATION 18:3,5,7
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

JEREMIAH 50:3,24
3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. (RUSSIA A SNEAK ATTACK ON AMERICA)

REVELATION 18:9-11,15-21
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,(NUKE ATTACK I BELIEVE)
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

US to sell missiles, ships, helicopters to Taiwan: Pentagon
JAN 29,10

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The Pentagon announced Friday plans for a six-billion-dollar arms sale to Taiwan including Patriot missiles and Black Hawk helicopters, but did not meet Taipei's request for F-16 fighter jets. The latest arms sales to Taiwan included communications equipment for Taiwan's F-16s but no new fighter aircraft that had been part of Taipei's wish list, according to the Defence Cooperation Security Agency. The deal includes 114 Patriot missiles -- worth 2.81 billion dollars -- and 60 Black Hawk helicopters -- worth 3.1 billion dollars, the agency said in a statement.

Amid speculation Washington was preparing to act on Taiwan's request for weapons, China had warned Washington against more arms sales to the island.Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou, despite warming ties with Beijing, has appealed to the United States for weapons, saying the island must stay on guard in light of the mainland's sharp rise in military spending.Washington is the leading arms supplier to self-ruled Taiwan, despite switching diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
China and Taiwan split at the end of a civil war in 1949. Beijing still views the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

US ambassador: US-Japan pact critical for peace By MALCOLM FOSTER, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jan 29, 7:06 am ET

TOKYO – U.S. Ambassador John Roos defended U.S. troop levels in Japan Friday, saying their presence is essential for maintaining peace and prosperity in the region, and stressed the importance of a key Marine base whose delayed relocation has frayed bilateral relations. In a speech at Tokyo's Waseda University, Roos reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan security pact, now in its 50th year, under which nearly 50,000 American troops are stationed in Japan. He called them front-line forces in case of emergencies or regional security threats. Our alliance is the critical stabilizing force in this area of the world, he said, highlighting China's military modernization and North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.A North Korea that falls into internal disarray would cause monumental security challenges to this region,he said.Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama also offered Friday a ringing endorsement of Japan's alliance with the U.S., despite the lingering uncertainty over the relocation of Futenma Marine air field on the southern island of Okinawa, where more than half the American forces are based. He told parliament the alliance has served an indispensable role for Japan and for regional and global peace. Its importance will not be changed,he said.

He pledged to decide by the end of May on where to relocate the base.In 2006, Washington and Tokyo agreed to move Futenma's facilities to a less crowded, northern part of the island, as well as move 8,000 Marines to the U.S. territory of Guam. But Hatoyama's government, which swept to power last year, has balked at moving Futenma to the north — much to Washington's frustration — and says it wants to review the U.S. military presence in Japan. The victory last weekend of an anti-base mayoral candidate in the Okinawan city of Nago, where Futenma is to be moved under the 2006 plan, has only complicated matters. For years, Okinawa residents have complained about base-related noise, pollution and crime, and many want the U.S. military presence on the island reduced — and Futenma moved off the island entirely.Roos said that in the 2006 reorganization plan the two governments examined virtually every conceivable alternative before concluding that Nago was the best location. He said that given the trends in the security environment, Okinawa is becoming not less, but more important for the defense of Japan and the maintenance of peace in the region.

Roos also said that Washington is eager to work with Japan to create a more equal and effective defense partnership that would be consistent with Japan's pacifist constitution, but did not further elaborate.

Climate change to triple Australia fire danger: report
Thu Jan 28, 1:45 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Climate change could more than triple the risk of catastrophic wildfires in parts of Australia, a top environmental group warned Thursday, almost a year since savage firestorms that killed 173 people.Greenpeace warned that, without a new climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, the frequency of severe fire danger in drought-parched southeastern Australia would grow threefold by 2050.

Catastrophic conditions similar to those ahead of February's so-called Black Saturday wildfires which killed 173 people in towns around Melbourne would occur once every three years, instead of once in every 33.The frequency of catastrophic fire danger could increase more than tenfold in Melbourne, and the number of total fire ban days could triple in Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra by 2050,according to a Greenpeace report entitled Future Risk.If targets for emission cuts proposed by world leaders at December's Copenhagen summit were adopted in a new global treaty, southeastern Australia would still face at least a doubling of severe fire risk, Greenpeace said.If we do nothing to address climate change we are knowingly placing more lives and property at risk, said Greenpeace CEO Linda Selvey.According to the report temperatures in Australia had warmed an average 0.9 degrees Celsius (33.6 F) since 1950, with the greatest intensification of heat in the country's east, which was accompanied by markedly declining rainfall.Hotter, drier weather is a recipe for bushfire disaster in regions of Australia home to the majority of the population," it said, adding that the changing climate had noticeably prolonged the annual fire season.

The February 7 Black Saturday fires were the worst natural disaster in Australia's modern history, with one expert likening their intensity to the energy produced by 1,500 Hiroshima atomic bombs.More than 2,000 homes were destroyed, killing 173 people and injuring more than 400.Australia this week reiterated its Copenhagen goal for emissions cuts of between five and 25 percent of 2000 levels by 2020, depending on commitments by other nations, and said they would be formally submitted to the UN.
