Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners is dead against a plan by Bruce Power to load 16 low-level radioactive steam generators onto a ship in Owen Sound Harbour and ship them to Sweden, but it seems unlikely she can stop it. The Tiverton-based nuclear generation company requires only a heavy load permit from the city, which cannot be denied based on health and safety concerns unrelated to the actual transportation of the 100-tonne vessels through Owen Sound, said city manager Jim Harrold. Bruce Power has already secured the support of Transport Canada, which owns the harbour, conditional upon the approval of a licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. An application is now before the CNSC. It would be the first time a licence has been issued to ship nuclear waste across the Great Lakes. Bruce Power spokesman Ross Lamont suggested to council that the city would be in a legal fight if it refuses to issue the heavy-load permit, based on concerns with storing the steam generators by the harbour and shipping them out of Owen Sound.I find life is a lot simpler when we don't use lawyers. I would hope we would have a fulsome discussion as to why,he told council after being asked what would happen if the city said no. He said Bruce Power has no alternate plan to shipping the generators out of Owen Sound Harbour. Other harbours, including one in Goderich, have been ruled out.

Lovell Stanners would also require the support of her council colleagues to stop the plan. Owen Sound councillors Peter Lemon and Tom Pink said they support Bruce Power's proposal.Lemon said he is more concerned about invasive aquatic species, such as zebra mussels, hitching a ride on the ocean-going vessel and remaining in harbour than the risks of the low-level radioactive waste.Other councillors wanted more information.Lamont laid out for council Bruce Power's plan to ship the school bus-sized, decommissioned generators from its Tiverton site to the Owen Sound harbour. The steel vessels will be loaded one by one onto a docked ship -- about the same size as the Chi-Cheemaun -- over three weeks, starting in mid-September, and then shipped to a recycling facility in Sweden.Lovell Stanners said she is concerned about the impact the steam generators might have on the health and safety of Owen Sound residents. She questioned what would happen if one were to fall into the harbour.The more that I have learned, the less I am comfortable with this plan at all,she said during the meeting. Lamont said Bruce Power has chosen to ship the steam generators to Sweden to reduce the amount of waste that will be stored at the Bruce site property. About 90% of the generators' metal will be melted down in Sweden for reuse and the rest will be shipped back to Canada and stored as low-level nuclear waste. He said the generators will be welded shut and will not pose a danger to the public or environment. There will be a protected, guarded staging area in Owen Sound, he said.Bruce Power changed its plan to store the generators at the harbour for five weeks. Now, the plan is to load them on an awaiting ship over three weeks. The longest one will be stored along the harbour will be one night, Lamont said. He said standing next to one of the generators for two hours will deliver no more radiation than a chest X-ray.Bruce Power plans to ship another 16 generators across the Great Lakes, as part of the refurbishment of Units 1 and 2, in a few years. More will be shipped through Owen Sound as other units are refurbished.

Bruce Power is holding a public meeting July 27 at 5 p.m. at the Grey Bruce Health Unit building. It is also holding meetings in Saugeen Shores and at its visitor centre. The only decision council made on Bruce Power's plan Monday was to approve a motion by Coun. Bill Twaddle to invite medical officer of health Dr. Hazel Lynn to speak to council about it. Lamont said she is supportive. Bruce Power must submit its application for a heavy load permit to Owen Sound within 30 days of the shipments. Several anti-nuclear and environmental groups are circulating a petition to oppose Bruce Power's plan. Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley and two state representatives from Michigan are among the people who have signed so far. Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, said it is foolish to ship the steam generators, which have 5,000 corroded pipes inside, on the Great Lakes.The danger is that accidents do happen, he said. There's lots of radioactive junk inside those steam generators. In fact, Bruce Power doesn't even know the complete inventory of the radioactive material inside because it's impossible to measure from the outside and no one wants to go inside because it's too dangerous. If this material were to somehow find a pathway out into the environment, through either a puncture or a crack or just to corrosion, then you have this material leaking into the Great Lakes.Shipping the generators across the Great Lakes also sets precedence, he said, for larger and more dangerous shipments.

A former senior advisor to President Bill Clinton says that the only thing which can rescue Barack Obama’s increasingly tenuous grip on power as his approval figures continue to plunge is a terror attack on the scale of Oklahoma City or 9/11, another startling reminder that such events only ever serve to benefit those in authority.

Buried in a Financial Times article about Obama’s growing credibility crisis and fears on behalf of Democrats that they could lose not only the White House but also the Senate to Republicans, Robert Shapiro makes it clear that Obama is relying on an October surprise in the form of a terror attack to rescue his presidency.The bottom line here is that Americans don’t believe in President Obama’s leadership, said Shapiro, adding, He has to find some way between now and November of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can’t think of how he could do that.Shapiro’s veiled warning should not be dismissed lightly. He was undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs dung Clinton’s tenure in the Oval Office and also acted as principal economic adviser to Clinton in his 1991-1992 campaign. Shapiro is now Director of the Globalization Initiative of NDN and also Chair of the Climate Task Force. Anti-incumbent fever is dominating the political climate once again, with establishment Democrats facing serious challenges from Tea Party candidates, people like Senate Democratic majority leader Harry Reid, who has a battle on his hands against Sharron Angle, a candidate the establishment media has attempted to demonize as a far-right extremist because she supports populist measures like removing sodium fluoride from water supplies and supports the Oath Keepers group, an organization centered around upholding states’ rights and the U.S. Constitution.Only by exploiting a domestic terror attack which can be blamed on right-wing radicals can Obama hope to reverse the tide of anti-incumbency candidates that threaten to drastically dilute the power monopoly of establishment candidates from both major political parties in Washington.As we highlighted yesterday, Shapiro is by no means the first to point out that terror attacks on U.S. soil and indeed anywhere in the world serve only to benefit those in positions of power.CNN host Rick Sanchez admitted on his show this week that the deadly bombings in Uganda which killed 74 people were helpful to the military-industrial complex agenda to expand the war on terror into Africa.During the latter years of the Bush presidency, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld mused with Pentagon top brass that shrinking Capitol Hill support for expanding the war on terror could be corrected with the aid of another terror attack.Lt.-Col. Doug Delaney, chair of the war studies program at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, told the Toronto Star in July 2007 that The key to bolstering Western resolve is another terrorist attack like 9/11 or the London transit bombings of two years ago.The same sentiment was also explicitly expressed in a 2005 GOP memo, which yearned for new attacks that would validate the President’s war on terror and restore his image as a leader of the American people.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People today meeting in Kansas City at its 101st annual convention voted to condemn the racism of the tea party movement, claiming it could return the nation to the pre-civil rights era.

Debate on the resolution came up this afternoon, and delegates argued over grammatical errors in the resolution, and whether the tea parties in general or just some of the tea party participants should be condemned, before a request was made to eject the media from the meeting hall, and the organization instantly shut down its webcast. The resolution suggested that people in the conservative political movement – which has vocally opposed many of President Obama's socialist-leaning programs, such as the nationalization of the health care decision-making process in the U.S. – repudiate the racism of the tea parties.There also was argument among convention delegates whether those racists should be expelled from the movement. Said one delegate,There is a racist element in the tea party.They spoke of educating not only NAACP members, but members of the community as well.In an earlier statement, the chief of the NAACP already had condemned the tea party movement.

According to a report from KMBC television in Kansas City, Benjamin Jealous told his organization's members tea parties must expel the bigots and racists in your ranks or take the responsibility for them and their actions.We will no longer allow you to hide like cowards and hide behind signs that say lynch our president or anyone else, Jealous said.But the move by the organization drew heated opposition from another organization, Project 21, the National Leadership Network of Black Conservatives, where fellow Deneen Borelli said the NAACP is turning itself into a political tool to do the dirty work of the progression movement.As a frequent speaker at tea party rallies around the country, I can assure the NAACP that the tea party movement's concerns are about President Obama's policies and not his race,Borelli said.

Jealous also had targeted former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin – a tea party event celebrity – personally.Sarah Palin says, Let's party like it's 1776.My white daddy would say be careful what you wish for because the 18th century, Sarah, wasn't good for anybody, even folks like you,Jealous said. Hilary Shelton, an NAACP officer, in a Fox News appearance accused the party of sheltering those who are tied to the Nazi party.They are, he said, Making their home with the tea party.The organization did not immediately make a vote count available, but the Associated Press confirmed that the resolution was approved.Instead of criticizing tea parties, the NAACP would be better served denouncing the racist comments made by a member of the New Black Panther Party and their voter intimidation outside a Philadelphia polling place in the last presidential election,Borelli suggested. According to Project 21, the Kansas City NAACP president, Anity Russell, explained the tea party isn't really about limited government and that's why the resolution dealt with the explicitly racist behavior.I urge the delegates to read the Contract from America – a list of policy objectives for Congress that was developed by tea party members nationwide. These objectives are clearly about limited government and liberty. Muslim women in France may soon be prohibited from completely covering their faces in public areas.A new law banning the wearing of the burka, or niqab,in public spaces passed Tuesday by a near-unanimous vote, 335 to 1, in the French National Assembly.The bill is written in such a way as to prohibit anyone from wearing an item of clothing that will hide his or her face in open spaces. The term is defined to include streets, shops, parks or cafes, as well as public buildings, such as town or city halls, schools and hospitals. Those who defy the ban would be punished for the violation with a fine of 150 euros ($191).Only 2,000 women from the five million-strong Muslim population are believed to observe the strict tradition of wearing the full face veil, which is seen by many as a symbol of oppression of women.The sight of women clad in the burka on the streets of France is also viewed by most French politicians, as well as many moderate Muslims, as a sign of growing fundamentalism in the community. Among the average grassroots population, the garment is considered an insult to the secular French tradition and the country's constitution.Some Muslim community leaders, however, suspect the law will backfire and stigmatize their brethren instead.

Legal wrangling over the measure has been tempered with the inclusion of language that prevents the ban from discriminating by gender, religion or specific item of clothing.The bill now goes to the nation's Senate, where it is expected to pass a vote in September.Reportedly the Belgian parliament is planning a similar move, and Spain is not far behind, with a measure already in the works to limit the wearing of garments that hide one's face in public buildings.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Obama Asks Religious Jew to Cure $1 Trillion Budget Disease

Salsa, guacamole dips tied to food poisoning: CDC

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Contaminated salsa and guacamole dips are common causes of food poisoning in restaurants, and food workers need to take greater care, researchers told a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention meeting on Monday.

They said nearly one of every 25 traceable outbreaks of foodborne disease between 1998 and 2008 began with one of the increasingly popular dips, which are made using onions, tomatoes, peppers, avocados, herbs and other ingredients.Possible reasons salsa and guacamole can pose a risk for foodborne illness is that they may not be refrigerated appropriately and are often made in large batches, so even a small amount of contamination can affect many customers,said Magdalena Kendall or the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.Awareness that salsa and guacamole can transmit foodborne illness, particularly in restaurants, is key to preventing future outbreaks,Kendall, who worked on the study, said in a statement.Salsa and guacamole often contain diced raw produce, including hot peppers, tomatoes and cilantro, each of which has been implicated in past outbreaks.

Kendall and colleagues analyzed all outbreaks of foodborne illness reported to the CDC. None were associated with salsa or guacamole before 1984, they found, but by 1998 to 2008 the two dips accounted for 3.9 percent of outbreaks traced to restaurants.We want restaurants and anyone preparing fresh salsa and guacamole at home to be aware that these foods containing raw ingredients should be carefully prepared and refrigerated to help prevent illness, Kendall said.In March a coalition of consumer and public health groups said foodborne illnesses cost the United States $152 billion in health-related expenses each year.The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill a year ago to reorganize the convoluted U.S. food safety system, but the Senate has yet to act, despite broad bipartisan agreement on the issue.The CDC estimates that 76 million people in the United States get sick each year with foodborne illness and 5,000 die.(Editing by Paul Simao)

MANILA, Philippines – The first typhoon to lash the Philippines this year flooded streets in the capital, toppled power lines and killed at least nine people Wednesday. Ten fishermen were missing after waves overturned their boats.More than half of the main northern island of Luzon, which includes Manila, was without electricity, and authorities said it would take two to three days to restore power. Several dozen flights were canceled, and schools and many government offices closed.

Elsewhere in Asia, heavy rains wreaked havoc in China and Japan. The death toll from rain-triggered landslides rose to 37 in western China, and workers raced to drain overflowing reservoirs in the southeast. Flooding has killed 107 people in China so far this month, the official Xinhua News Agency said.Storms also lashed southern and western Japan, leaving one dead and three missing. A woman drowned in a swollen river, and three people, including two women in their 70s, were missing, according to officials. BEIJING – Workers raced to build waterways to drain overflowing reservoirs in southeastern China and thousands were evacuated following torrential rains that triggered flash floods on Wednesday.Heavy rains overwhelmed three reservoirs in Poyang county in northern Jiangxi province, forcing the evacuation of more than 10,000 people, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.Torrential storms have pelted the Yangtze River basin this week — including parts of Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces.In western China, the death toll from landslides triggered by heavy rains rose to 37, with another 37 people still missing, Xinhua reported.In the worst-hit community of Xiaohe in Yunnan province, the death toll climbed to 13 following a landslide that swept through town before dawn on Tuesday, Xinhua said.Two landslides killed 14 in neighboring Sichuan province while in Hunan province, ten people including four young children died in two separate slides this week, the report said.Meanwhile, the waters in a reservoir near the far western city of Golmud began to subside after hundreds of workers and soldiers finished digging a diversion channel, an official at the Qinghai province water bureau said.

More than 10,000 residents were evacuated as soldiers transported sandbags, rocks and dirt and used bulldozers to dig the emergency waterway, the Golmud city government website said.Usually prone to drought, Qinghai has seen increasingly heavy rainfalls in recent years. This year's rains fell as snow melted in the surrounding mountains. Dozens of reservoirs swelled beyond their warning levels, the water bureau official said.In the eastern province of Anhui, workers were draining overflowing reservoirs and repairing damaged dams, Xinhua reported. About 70 percent of the 282 reservoirs in Chizhou city have exceeded warning levels due to torrential rains.Since the beginning of July, flooding across China has killed 107 people, with 59 missing and nearly a million people evacuated from their homes as of Tuesday, Xinhua said. More rain was expected to batter affected regions through Thursday.Parts of China experience annual flooding but this year's rains have been particularly devastating. China landslide deaths rise to 41

BEIJING (AFP) – A series of landslides triggered by heavy rains in China has left at least 41 people dead and 34 others missing, state media said Wednesday, as authorities brace for possible flooding.The landslides swept through villages in the southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan and in the central province of Hunan earlier this week.In a small township in Yunnan's Qiaojia county -- the worst-hit -- 17 people have been confirmed dead and 28 were still missing, Xinhua news agency said in its latest report on the mounting toll.Another 43 people were injured, a spokesman for the local government, who declined to be named, told AFP by phone.

Pictures from the scene showed a building completely dislocated from its foundation by the force of the landslide and teetering precariously, a car thrown on its side and streets caked in mud.Relief teams were sent to the scene of the disaster with tents, rice, quilts and fresh clothing, Xinhua said.The China Daily said two other landslides in neighbouring Sichuan province left 14 people dead, and one person was still unaccounted for.In Hunan, 10 people were killed and five others remained missing in two separate landslides, Xinhua said.According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, torrential rains and flooding have left 107 dead and 59 missing in China since the beginning of July, but it was unclear whether the landslide victims were part of that toll.Heavy downpours since last week in parts of central and eastern China -- some of which suffered from deadly floods last month -- have caused levels in major lakes and some tributaries of the Yangtze River to rise alarmingly.The National Meteorological Centre on Wednesday maintained its orange rainstorm alert, predicting more downpours in many of those areas.Typhoon Conson, which has killed three people and caused major damage in the Philippines, is also expected to hit southern China towards the end of the week, the centre warned.

The Navy ships' formation at sea had prevented any chance of the ship's continuing to Gaza without trying to run the blockade and risking a disaster.An Al Jazeera reporter said that port workers at El Arish are preparing to receive the vessel.Israel and officials of a foundation named after Libyan President Muaamar Qaddafi (pictured) held indirect secret talks to avoid a clash on the high seas, the London Guardian reported Wednesday morning. Qaddafi's representatives wanted guarantees that the 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid on board will reach Gaza, while Israel insisted that it be delivered via ports in Israel or in Egypt.The ship's captain earlier had said the vessel had undergone repairs for a malfunctioning engine. He earlier stated he would head for Gaza and contradicted his own word and a statement by the owner of the ship, said to be loaded with humanitarian aid, that it would sail for El Arish, instead of trying to challenge the Israeli Navy’s embargo over the coastal waters where it has sovereignty.Israel originally had given the boat a midnight ultimatum to shift course before the report that the boat was in need of repairs. The Cuban-born captain told Navy radio operators he would change course.Navy ships are continuing to track the ship, wanting to prevent another clash similar to the May 31 battle with Turkish terror activists, nine of whom were killed after brutally attacking virtually defenseless Navy commandos who had expected to be confronted by pacifists.

The organizers of the project said there are no weapons on board, and it may be trying to stage a public relations coup by forcing the Navy to stop it and then prove it had peaceful intentions.The Mavi Marmara ship’s crew that clashed with the Navy on May 31 later was found to be without any humanitarian aid.On Tuesday, a Greek businessman who owns the Almathea stated that if the Navy challenges the ship, We will choose to sail to the port of El-Arish and transfer the assistance by ground to Gaza.A report published by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center claims that the sole mission of the Libyan foundation responsible for sending out this ship to Gaza is to break the siege. According to the published findings, the Libyans intend to pressure Israel to agree to allow the entrance of goods into the Gaza according to the rules of the game determined by Hamas.In addition, the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center report shows that there are political considerations behind the Libya-sponsored flotilla, as Libya is interested in strengthening its position within the Arab League. Jerusalem-Golan Bill Goes to the Knesset for Final Vote

A national referendum will have to be held before any part of the Golan Heights or eastern Jerusalem is given away, according to a bill that has now passed a significant hurdle.The Knesset House and Law Committees, sitting in a joint session, voted to approve the bill, meaning that it can be raised in the Knesset for its final readings. If it passes these, it becomes law.The joint committee passed the bill by a 7-2 vote, despite the government’s opposition as manifest in its rejection of the proposal in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.Many Knesset Members were thrilled with the results. Likud MK Yariv Levine, the driving force behind the proposal, said, This law has supreme national importance in preserving national unity, and will obligate every Israeli government to reach an agreement that is acceptable to the majority of the nation.MK Carmel Shama, also of the Likud, said that today is a holiday for the Golan, while MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union), a member of the joint committee, said, We will soon bring the bill to the Knesset for its final vote, and I have no doubt that it will pass by a wide majority. The voters’ desire not to have sovereign territories of the country ceded without asking the populace first, will become law.This bill effectively puts an end to the hallucinations of those who hope to give away the Golan or divide Jerusalem in exchange for empty promises, Eldad added.

Voices of opposition were predictably heard from the left. MK Chaim Oron (Meretz) said that the bill is an attempt to sabotage peace efforts. MK Shlomo Mola (Kadima) took a political jab at the Likud in saying that the bill shows that the ruling party does not trust its leader, Binyamin Netanyahu, not to make a deal with Syria involving a withdrawal from the Golan.As of now, the government is permitted to cede sovereign territory only if a majority of the Knesset – at least 61 MKs – approves. Scientists say Gulf spill altering food web By MATTHEW BROWN and RAMIT PLUSHNICK-MASTI, Associated Press Writers - JULY 14,10

NEW ORLEANS – Scientists are reporting early signs that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is altering the marine food web by killing or tainting some creatures and spurring the growth of others more suited to a fouled environment.Near the spill site, researchers have documented a massive die-off of pyrosomes — cucumber-shaped, gelatinous organisms fed on by endangered sea turtles.Along the coast, droplets of oil are being found inside the shells of young crabs that are a mainstay in the diet of fish, turtles and shorebirds.And at the base of the food web, tiny organisms that consume oil and gas are proliferating.If such impacts continue, the scientists warn of a grim reshuffling of sealife that could over time cascade through the ecosystem and imperil the region's multibillion-dollar fishing industry.Federal wildlife officials say the impacts are not irreversible, and no tainted seafood has yet been found. But Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who chairs a House committee investigating the spill, warned Tuesday that the problem is just unfolding and toxic oil could be entering seafood stocks as predators eat contaminated marine life.You change the base of the food web, it's going to ripple through the entire food web, said marine scientist Rob Condon, who found oil-loving bacteria off the Alabama coastline, more than 90 miles from BP's collapsed Deepwater Horizon drill rig. Ultimately it's going to impact fishing and introduce a lot of contaminants into the food web.The food web is the fundamental fabric of life in the Gulf. Once referred to as the food chain, the updated term reflects the cyclical nature of a process in which even the largest predator becomes a food source as it dies and decomposes.What has emerged from research done to date are snapshots of disruption across a swath of the northern Gulf of Mexico. It stretches from the 5,000-feet deep waters at the spill site to the continental shelf off Alabama and the shallow coastal marshes of Louisiana.

Much of the spill — estimated at up to 182 million gallons of oil and around 12 billion cubic feet of natural gas — was broken into small droplets by chemical dispersants at the site of the leaking well head. That reduced the direct impact to the shoreline and kept much of the oil and natural gas suspended in the water.But immature crabs born offshore are suspected to be bringing that oil — tucked into their shells — into coastal estuaries from Pensacola, Fla., to Galveston, Texas. Oil being carried by small organisms for long distances means the spill's effects could be wider than previously suspected, said Tulane professor Caz Taylor.Chemical oceanographer John Kessler from Texas A&M University and geochemist David Valentine from the University of California-Santa Barbara recently spent about two weeks sampling the waters in a six-mile radius around the BP-operated Deepwater Horizon rig. More than 3,000 feet below the surface, they found natural gas levels have reached about 100,000 times normal, Kessler said.Already those concentrations are pushing down oxygen levels as the gas gets broken down by bacteria, Kessler and Valentine said. When oxygen levels drop low enough, the breakdown of oil and gas grinds to a halt and most life can't be sustained.The researchers also found dead pyrosomes covering the Gulf's surface in and around the spill site. There were thousands of these guys dead on the surface, just a mass eradication of them, Kessler said.

Scientists said they believe the pyrosomes — six inches to a foot in length — have been killed by the toxins in the oil because there have no other explanation, though they plan further testing.The researchers say the dead creatures probably are floating to the surface rather than sinking because they have absorbed gas bubbles as they filtered water for food.The death of pyrosomes could set off a ripple effect. One species that could be directly affected by what is happening to the pyrosomes would be sea turtles, said Laurence Madin, a research director at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Cape Cod, Mass. Some larger fish, such as tuna, may also feed on pyrosomes.If the pyrosomes are dying because they've got hydrocarbons in their tissues and then they're getting eaten by turtles, it's going to get into the turtles,said Madin. It was uncertain whether that would kill or sicken the turtles. The BP spill also is altering the food web by providing vast food for bacteria that consume oil and gas, allowing them to flourish. At the same time, the surface slick is blocking sunlight needed to sustain plant-like phytoplankton, which under normal circumstances would be at the base of the food web. Phytoplankton are food for small bait fish such as menhaden, and a decline in those fish could reduce tuna, red snapper and other populations important to the Gulf's fishing industries, said Condon, a researcher with Alabama's Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

Seafood safety tests on hundreds of fish, shrimp and other marine life that could make it into the food supply so far have turned up negative for dangerous oil contamination. Assuming the BP gusher is stopped and the cleanup successful, government and fishing industry scientists said the Gulf still could rebound to a healthy condition. Ron Luken, chief scientist for Omega Protein, a Houston-based company that harvests menhaden to extract fish oil, says most adult fish could avoid the spill by swimming to areas untainted by crude. Young fish and other small creatures already in those clean waters could later repopulate the impacted areas. I don't think anybody has documented wholesale changes,said Steve Murawski, chief scientist for the National Marine Fisheries Service. If that actually occurs, that has a potentially great ramification for life at the higher end of the food web.

LONDON – Oil prices dropped below $77 a barrel Wednesday after a report showed U.S. crude supplies rose unexpectedly last week, suggesting demand remains lackluster.
Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 38 cents to $76.77 a barrel at midday London time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Tuesday the contract gained $2.20 to settle at $77.15.Crude inventories rose 1.7 million barrels last week, the American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday, against a drop of 2.6 million barrels forecast in an analyst survey by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.Inventories of gasoline and distillates also rose, the API said.A strong start to second-quarter U.S. corporate earnings reports had helped buoy oil prices this week. Profits by Alcoa Inc. and Intel Corp. have beat analyst estimates. Google Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Bank of America Corp. are scheduled to announce earnings later this week.Economic guidance should continue to rule in moving oil prices, Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.This difficult trading environment is likely to continue for at least a couple more months with trading confined to the spring-summer range of about $70 to $80.

Analysts at Commerzbank Corporates & Markets attributed last week's 7 million-barrel decrease in oil supplies to Hurricane Alex, which temporarily impaired oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. The International Energy Agency expects the demand for oil to increase 1.77 million barrels per day for 2010 and 1.35 million barrels per day for 2011.The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.In other Nymex trading in August contracts, heating oil fell 0.71 cent to $2.0403 a gallon, gasoline dropped 0.54 cent to $2.0830a gallon and natural gas fell .6 cent to $4.348 per 1,000 cubic feet.Brent crude was down 19 cents to $76.49 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange.

Slovakia resists EU pressure on bail-outs

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The newly-minted Slovak Prime Minister, Iveta Radicova, left the EU capital on Tuesday (13 July) without agreeing to sign up to the eurozone bail-out fund or a separate loan for Greece.After two days of talks with EU leaders, Ms Radicova said the Slovak government will discuss the two questions at its cabinet meeting in Bratislava on Wednesday.The Slovak parliament will later have to approve the eurozone bail-out deal as well. But the government's signature would already allow the other participants in the mechanism to start issuing bond guarantees.Ms Radicova while in Brussels made some positive noises on the €750 billion EU-IMF bail-out mechanism. She said Slovak approval is a formal act whose commitment has been given by the previous government.She tried to distance herself politically from the deal however, saying: Without the agreement of the previous government, the process would not have started. That is a fact that cannot be challenged.She also sounded negative on prospects of Slovakia putting its agreed €800 million in the pot for Greece: The position of our minister of finance and also my personal and our political party is as it was before, that we really do not agree, we really do not agree.The Slovak leader's hard line comes despite mounting pressure from top EU officials.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, said at the press conference with Mrs Radicova on Tuesday, that: The previous government assumed a very clear commitment and we certainly expect commitments to be honored. This is a basic rule of the European Union and of international policy.Jean-Claude Juncker, the chairman of the euro-area finance ministers, told press: We have to have Slovakia signing the framework.Slovak finance minister Ivan Miklos noted that it would be difficult to renegotiate the size of the country's contribution to the bail-out fund.To negotiate today about the technical conditions and numbers is no longer possible because it has long since been approved by a majority of countries. The form of the bail-out has already been fixed,he told media on Tuesday.Corrected at 09.15 on 14 July: the original story said Slovakia's contribution to the Greek bail-out is €4.37 billion. It is in fact €800 million.

NGOs slam EU-Brazil plans to develop biofuels in Africa

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU and Brazilian leaders are set to announce a new triangular co-operation initiative, under which they will aim to work together in some of the world's poorest countries, but NGOs say the duo's scheme is self-centred and will simply make conditions worse. At a bilateral summit in Brasilia on Wednesday (14 July), European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are to agree to co-operate on a range of different projects in Portuguese speaking parts of Africa, Haiti and East Timor in the coming years. The development of renewable energy is likely to be a central theme, and a first step will see the EU and Brazil sign an agreement with Mozambique this week to develop bioelectricity and biofuels projects, EU sources have indicated. Brazilian companies are world leaders in the production of biofuels and are looking to expand their operations both internally and abroad, while the EU is looking to increase its biofuel use at home in order to meet its target of sourcing 20 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.But as EU and Brazilian officials prepare to start studies on how best to develop bioethanol, biodiesel and bioelectricity projects in Mozambique - already a leading African producer of biofuels - environmental groups say the initiative will simply serve to displace people from their land and exacerbate food shortages.In a country that suffers persistent hunger, using millions of hectares of agricultural land to grow crops to power European cars is immoral and perverse, Adrian Bebb, a biofuels expert with Friends of the Earth, told this website.European biofuels targets are what is driving this global expansion, he added. Studies suggest that a third of the land sold or acquired in Africa, some five million hectares or an area greater than the size of Denmark, is intended for fuel crops.The gains for both sides as a result of the new deal are clear however. By teaming up with Brazil in Africa, the EU stands to create a new and cheaper supply of biofuel, while Brazilian companies could make considerable savings on EU import tariffs. Biofuel produced in Brazil is currently subject to high tariffs when entering the EU, while duties on African-produced biofuels are much lower.Reports suggest that Cosan and Copersucar are among the Brazilian ethanol producers that stand to gain the most from setting up new production bases in Africa.As part of his trip to Brazil, Mr Van Rompuy is set to visit a Cosan production line and meet with senior company officials on Thursday afternoon.

Other deliverables from the bilateral summit are likely to include two aviation agreements and a deal to allow all EU citizens from Schengen countries to enter Brazil without the need for a visa.Citizens from new EU member states Malta, Latvia, Cyprus and Estonia still currently need a short-term tourist visa when visiting the South American country.The two sides will also discuss EU-Latin American relations, as well as the non-proliferation of nuclear arms. Brazil was recently involved in an initiative with Turkey to monitor the production of nuclear material in Iran, but the deal received a cold reception from the EU and US.

It’s more and more dangerous publishing articles, comments and even cartoons in a paper or in the web. The famous western value freedom of speech seems to go down gradually in value – in mother-countries of democracy and civil rights. A big danger is also the devaluation of media by (Self-)Censorship.Have a look at following declaration: Artists and journalists around the continent have to think clearly about balancing freedom of religion with freedom of speech.This sentence you should read twice. It was published by so called Liberals in the European Parliament ALDI and sounds harmless. But what does it mean in the media-world wide web? To take into account the feelings of religions – all over the world? It encourages a worst case thinking. And that could mean, from my point of view: the end of free press in the western way of thinking.Responsible journalism is the new keyword to keep journalists on a short lead. Poor Europe. Sacrifice key values of western style democracies – to avoid possible protest of disciples of any religion or even terrorist attacks in the name of such? And/or is the purpose of this political lesson: to find arguments to manipulate and control media in a more effective way.

The quoted sentence is written in an invitation letter for a press conference in the European Parliament initiated by two MEPs: Marietje Schaake from the party D66 in the Netherlands and Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (FDP) from Germany.There is often a hidden agenda in dealings in the Brussels bubble. I was rather shocked, visiting the seminar organized by so called Liberals – ALDE – in the European Parliament. The title (Self-) Censorship: New Challenges for Freedom of Expression in Europe attracted me. Interesting, as for the speeches (speakers and summaries see below).
But the discussion, moderated by Mrs. Schaake and Mr. Graf Lambsdorff was poor, disappointing. In short: a missed opportunity to strenghten civil liberties. The contrary: the indirect main message was: be careful in using your right of free speeech. Think about possible reactions and consequences this could have. Dear artist, dear cartoonist: before publishing please make an assessment of possible side-effects on earth your products could possibly have.So, the ALDE-seminar was an interesting lesson in the new dimension of political correctness we obviiously entered – to be more precise – in the obvioulsy growing fears in western countries.

The most interesting intervention from the audience came from Joe McNamee of the Organisation European Digital Rights(www.edri.org). It is an association of 27 organisations based in 17 countries. They exist in order to support privacy and civil rights in the digital environment.

Joe McNamee gave some examples of latest developments to influence the use of the internet:
- The latest version of the Council of Europe recommendation appeared to legitimise rather than limit profiling by states.
- The EU Directive on data retention has been implemented in numerous (also not implemented in several) EU member states.
- the European Parliament – although a great many signed without realised what they were doing – supported the implementation of the data retention directive and its extension to search engines.
- The European Commission is working on a code of conduct for ISPs to deal with allegations of illegality of material that is hosted online. This includes a recommendation to change terms and conditions to facilitate deletion of websites and for hosting providers to automatically delete websites if they have been asked to do so by bodies authorised under national law to monitor internet content. the full document is available at edri

Europe must protect freedom of expression and press following the example of Iceland said Marietje Schaake (D66, NL) during the ALDE seminar on Censorship and Self censorship hosted with Alexander Lambsdorff (FDP, DE) which looked at challenges to freedom of expression, with a special focus on the role the internet plays and with the aim to be informed, and inspired by good practices, to be alerted to worst cases, and to consequently look at concrete ways to make Europe a safe haven for the free word, also online.Freedom of expression is under threat in Europe, which instead should be a model for the rest of the world. How can we credibly speak about a lack of freedom of expression in China or Iran if we don’t apply the highest standards ourselves? The event will be a platform for artists and journalists, as well as for politicians and lawmakers. Ever since the Danish Cartoon riots, freedom of expression has become problematic for artists throughout Europe. Artists and journalists around the continent have to think clearly about balancing freedom of religion with freedom of speech.The legal and political implications of freedom of speech are also rapidly developing. On June 15th, The Icelandic Parliament unanimously passed a bill for the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative. In close cooperation with WikiLeaks, Icelandic parliamentarians devised a law that will counter ‘libel tourism’, taking the best from freedom of expression legislation around the world. Flemming Rose is Opinion and Culture Editor of Jyllands-Posten, Denmark’s largest newspaper, since 2009. He joined the paper in 2004 as its Culture Editor, and in 2005he commissioned the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that sparked riots across the Muslim world. Previously he spent 14 years abroad as a foreign correspondent for Jyllands-Posten and Berlingske Tidende, 11 years in the Soviet Union and Russia and 3 years in Washington DC. Rose has a BA in Russian language and literature from the University of Copenhagen and worked as a translator before he became a journalist. He has translated several novels – as well as the political memoirs of Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin – from Russian into Danish. He is also the author of The Catastrophe that did not happen: Russia in Change 1992-1996 (1997) and American Voices (2006), and has contributed essays to several anthologies. In autumn 2010 his book about the cartoon crisis will be published in Denmark.

Lars Vilks -Artist
Lars Vilks, artist and PhD in History of Art, Professor in Art Theory in Bergen Art Academy, Norway, 1997-2003, known for his land art pieces Nimis and Arx 1980-. He lives and works in South of Sweden. In 2007 he started a controversy when portraying The Prophet M. as a Round about Dog. The process art piece has been expanding especially during 2010, when the artist was stopped by a Muslim mob during a lecture at the University in Uppsala. A week later Fundamentalist Muslims tried to burn down his home. The artist has no political agenda, he works as an artist.

Naema Tahir – Author
Naema Tahir (1970, Slough, England) is a British-Dutch writer and human rights lawyer, of Pakistani origin. Tahir read Dutch and International Law at Leiden University. She worked as a lawyer for ten years at various Dutch Ministries and the UNHCR (as protection officer in Lagos, Nigeria). She was a lawyer at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, specialized in economic and social human rights. Tahir has authored books on the empowerment of Muslim women, their human rights and reproductive rights, identity, migration and integration, published in the Netherlands. Een Moslima ontsluiert (A Muslim woman unveils, 2005, Houtekiet) dealt with the effects of migration on Islamic identity. The bestselling Kostbaar Bezit (Prized Possession, 2006, Prometheus) was a controversial novel on the reproductive and sexual rights of three Muslim women living in Lahore, Pakistan. The novel Eenzaam heden (Lonesome today, 2008 Prometheus) dealt in a humoristic manner with the issue of identity of an isolated Pakistani family in London who find themselves mildly radicalising. In October 2008 Green Riding Hood and the converted wolf was launched – fairy tales on Muslims and morality in the West. Tahir is currently working on a novel about forced marriages to be launched in October 2010 by Publishing House The Geus. Tahir featured in the book Derde Feministische Golf (Third Feminist Wave, 2006 Houtekiet) by Dirk Verhofstadt (brother to the former Belgium Prime-Minister) who considers Tahir to belong to the avant garde of women in the Netherlands who strive towards the emancipation of and respect for the freedoms of Muslim women.

Birgitta Jonsdottir- Member of Parliament, Iceland
Birgitta Jonsdottir is a poet, journalist, internet pioneer, activist and a publisher. She was elected to the Icelandic parliament in April 2009 on behalf of a movement aiming for democratic reform beyond party politics of left and right. Birgitta managed to rally support from all parties in the Icelandic Parliament for the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, a proposal for a parliamentary resolution for Iceland to strongly position itself legally with regard to the protection of freedoms of expression and information.Birgitta has served as the Chairman of the Movement Parliamentary Group since 2009.She is currently a member of the Parliamentary Review Committee on the SIC report, of the Committee on the Environment, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a member of the Icelandic delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Birgitta is also a part of International Network of Parliamentarians’ for Tibet (INPaT) and an active volunteer for WikiLeaks projects.

Professor Alastair Mullis
currently holds a chair in law (and is Dean) at the Norwich Law School, University of East Anglia. He is also a visiting research professor at the Faculte des Sciences Juridiques, Tunis and holds visiting chairs at the Universities of Muenster, Germany and Thammasat, Thailand. His main research and teaching interests lie in the areas of the law of defamation, international commercial law and torts. Climate Change Used as Excuse For Population Control

The major target for the Club of Rome was a population that was improving quality of life, health and the pursuit of happiness. It argued this was achieved by unsustainable exploitation of resources and destruction of nature. As they explain; If the present growth trends in world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continue unchanged, the limit to growth on this planet will be reached sometime within the next one hundred years.It’s 40 years on and the predicted end is nowhere in sight despite efforts to amplify, distort and falsify evidence. It is wrong like all other predictions made by members of the Club, especially the population predictions of Paul Ehrlich and John Holdren. In 1971, Ehrlich recommended reducing the US population from its then 205 million because it was unsustainable. Despite this, pursuit of Club goals is more active as members control national and international finances and economies, hold political offices, or work through many private agencies under the guise of saving the planet. It is not a conspiracy, but pursuit of a political philosophy that has failed everywhere and anywhere it was tried.

Gradually They Undermine Economies and Society
The doomsday philosophy believes everything is spiraling out of control and on such a scale that only government can deal with the problems. Obama’s administration, especially those who were members of the Club of Rome clearly pursue this belief. John Holdren, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology was an active member publishing with Ehrlich the frightening 1977 work Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment. The book proposed total government control.Perhaps those agencies, combined with UNEP and the United Nations population agencies, might eventually be developed into a Planetary Regime—sort of an international superagency for population, resources, and environment.The Planetary Regime might be given responsibility for determining the optimum population for the world and for each region and for arbitrating various countries’ shares within their regional limits. Control of population size might remain the responsibility of each government, but the Regime would have some power to enforce the agreed limits.” (Link)

One writer summarizes the way such population control would occur as follows.

-Women could be forced to abort their pregnancies, whether they wanted to or not;
-The population at large could be sterilized by infertility drugs intentionally put into the nation’s drinking water or in food;
-Single mothers and teen mothers should have their babies seized from them against their will and given away to other couples to raise;
-People who contribute to social deterioration (i.e. undesirables) can be required by law to exercise reproductive responsibility—in other words, be compelled to have abortions or be sterilized.
Holdren and Ehrlich disavow these statements claiming they were part of a college textbook used to teach about energy policies. In his confirmation hearings Holdren told Senator David Vitter (R – LA) that he no longer considers it a role of government to determine an optimum population. So why is this a continuing issue?

First, Obama misled the US electorate into believing he was a moderate democrat and now his socialist agenda is fully exposed. Second, he appointed of people fully immersed in socialism and philosophies of the Club of Rome who will follow Obama’s lead and pursue what they denied or obscured at their appointments. Many were simply executive appointments that bypassed any vetting process. Third, the global strategy to use global warming and climate change as the basis for world government with total control continues unabated and essentially unreported.

Climate Change Remains The False Threat
Conference of the Parties (COP) 15 on climate change in Copenhagen was effectively sidelined by the leaked emails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU). Revelation of the degree of corruption and deception involved in creating the Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) did not stop the bureaucratic and political juggernaut. Now the whitewash of that corruption will give added impetus to the original agenda. Positions taken in Copenhagen will proceed with added urgency, amplified by the economic shifts engendered by Obama undermining the US economy by creating massive deficit and debt; the largest portion of which is held by the Chinese government. Consider and compare this statement from the Chinese leader in support of the delegation at Copenhagen with the statement of the Club of Rome.After more than thirty years of reform and upon opening its doors, China has achieved immense success. Yet, the country continually faces evolving conditions at home and abroad, such as decelerating growth rates, issues of increased energy consumption and high pollution ratios, environmental and resource constraints, international trade frictions, as well as deepening socioeconomic divides.These concerns underscore why Zhao Baige vice-minister of the National Population and Family Planning Commission (NPFPC) made a presentation in Copenhagen. She argued that China’s one-child policy was climate friendly because it reduced the number of people despoiling the world. Baige cited the Master’s thesis of Thomas Wire, a graduate student of the London School of Economics (LSE) that claimed $7 spent on birth control resulted in one tonne reduction of carbon. The Optimum Population Trust (OPT) sponsored his thesis and patrons of the Trust are a who’s who list of ardent and powerful anthropogenic global warming advocates, including Paul Ehrlich. Another patron, Jonathan Porritt, was delighted his February 2007 suggestion that China could offset charges they were not doing enough to fight climate change by claiming reductions achieved by their one-child policy.

The one-child policy is the ultimate in draconian government control. A fine of approximately $27,000 is levied if the second child is not aborted. A family can choose to pay the fine, but the child is not recognized by the State that withholds a permanent residency document which denies access to public services such as education and healthcare. The policy effects are devastating the population structure of China. Stories abound of infanticide or sex-selective ultrasound to abort females, as families want a male first born. A gross imbalance is developing in the male/ female ratio among other problems as the New England Journal of Medicine reports.Sir Crispin Trickell is another patron of the OPT who from the mid-1990s was Chairman of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). A summary of one presentation says, He (Trickell) describes how the Chinese government has been experimenting with new measurements of economic wealth in terms of well-being. He believes the international community would do well to look to China for inspiration in this field.Does this include the one-child policy? We have nothing to learn from China except what to avoid. Top Palestinian Authority negotiator Ahmed Qureia told a gathering in Jerusalem this week that the dispute over the final status of the capital in talks between the PA and Israel is turning the city into a time bomb.Qureia made the statement at a panel that featured him with Kadima Opposition Leader Tzipi Livni, who contended that the status quo is not possible.Both also agreed that indirect talks were unnecessary after years of direct negotiations. The two were leaders of their respective negotiating teams during the summit that led to the Annapolis Joint Declaration in November 2007.Qureia and Livni met with reporters at the King David Hotel ahead of a conference organized by Hebrew University's Harry S. Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace, entitled The Israeli-Palestinian Proximity Talks: Lessons from Past Negotiations.Supporting the two state solution is in Israel's interest, Livni told the gathering of academics, and not a gift to the president of the United States.U.S. President Barack Obama has been actively trying to pressure Israel into increased concessions to the PA in an attempt to woo Fatah leader and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to at least begin indirect negotiations, if nothing else.

EPA Goes Ape Over Power Plant Emissions

Not a day goes by without our being told that something is going to kill us. Much of what kills people is genetic; little time bombs in our DNA that determine the state of our health. Anyone who reads the daily obituaries knows that Americans are living longer than any previous generation. Most of the population is dying of nothing more sinister than old age.The diseases that kill Americans have been quantified and known for decades. At the top of the list is heart disease, followed by a variety of different kinds of cancers. Third in line are strokes. Chronic lower respiratory diseases such as asthma are next, but nothing more than accidents kill as many people.The remaining factors include diabetes, Alzheimer’s, pneumonia, nephritis (kidney diseases), and septicemia, a disease of the blood.What do Americans really die from? Genetic dispositions to illness. Accidents. Poor diets. And bad lifestyle choices that include smoking, drinking, and taking illegal drugs. With the exception of asthma that affects about seven percent of the population none of this has anything to do with air quality. Indeed, the causes of asthma remain somewhat shrouded in mystery even if the symptoms do not.

Environmental Protection Agency: Making Wild Claims
None of this empirical knowledge and data has the slightest effect, however, on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Lung Association that profits greatly from any claims about air quality. Both are inclined to making wild claims.
In early July, the EPA announced proposed cuts in pollution from power plants in 31 states and D.C.This is not about air quality. It is part of the long-term attack on all sources of power in America, but most particularly the coal-fired plants that provide just over fifty percent of all the electricity on which Americans depend for everything! Depriving Americans of electricity would trigger a tsunami of deaths in the form of heat stroke in the summer months or freezing in the cold of winter. That, however, is the actual objective of the EPA and the many environmental organizations that wage ceaseless propaganda campaigns and endless law suits whose sole purpose is to deprive Americans of this vital source of power.The EPA claims that infinitesimal particulates from power plant emissions, specifically sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) harms the health of people living downwind of power plants. They propose reducing such emissions by 71 percent over 2005 levels of SO2 and fifty-two percent of NOx.

This is in line with the crazed and fraudulent claim that carbon dioxide (CO2) is causing global warming and thus requires the huge tax on energy sources, the Cap-and-Trade Act making its way through Congress. The claims are the typical exaggerations of all proposed government regulations. The EPA claims that their latest action would yield more than $120 billion in annual health benefits in 2014, including avoiding an estimated 14,000 to 36,000 premature deaths, 23,000 nonfatal heart attacks, 21,000 cases of acute bronchitis, 240,000 aggravated asthma, and 1.9 million days when people miss school or work due to ozone-and-particle pollution-related symptoms.There’s a very impolite word to describe these kinds of statistics.

They are the same kind of statistics the Obama administration has been conjuring while it blew through a trillion dollar stimulus program with no real effect on the economy. These are the same kind of vacuous statistics behind the promise of new jobs, the takeover of healthcare, one-sixth of the nation’s economy, the takeover of the auto industry, et cetera! Everyone wants clean air. The effort to achieve it began over three decades ago and it has been a success at the same time the U.S. gross domestic product increased 156 percent, vehicle miles traveled increased 143 percent, energy consumption increased 45 percent, and the population increased 36 percent.Cracking down on coal-fired plants is a political act. It has no relation whatever to any need to reduce particulates for the general population.American Lung Association: Worst kind of exaggeration and fear-mongering When the American Lung Association talks of preventing tens of thousands of premature deaths each year it is engaged in the worst kind of exaggeration and fear-mongering.Because Americans are rightly concerned with issues involving jobs, mortgages, auto payments, and all the real threats to their well-being, the EPA knows it can sneak through draconian regulations that, in normal times, would be and should be stopped in their tracks.

He has rejected opponents’ demands that the backers of the plan be investigated for possible links with terrorists or terrorist groups.New York City officials already have approved the project, and the only hope by opponents to block its construction is to convince the Landmark Preservation Commission to prevent the demolition of the 152-year-old Cordova House warehouse in order to make way for a mammoth Muslim community center and house of worship.Opposition groups from a wide spectrum of the population—ranging from Jews to Sikhs—staged a large demonstration in early June against the planned mosque.The Park Place site is 600 feet from the area where Muslim suicide terrorists hijacked two planes and aimed them at the two towering Twin Towers in the early morning, when the planes’ fuel tanks were full.The resulting explosion and intense fire melted the metal structures, toppling the towers and killing nearly 3,500 people, including police officers and firefighters who arrived to control the blaze and cordon off the area. A Song and Prayer for Gilad Shalit: Take a Little Time to Pray

A 78-year-old Jerusalem Jewish resident and a Northern Ireland Christian have teamed up to produce an extraordinary video and song for kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been in captivity under the guard of Hamas and allied terrorists since June 25, 2006.British native and psychotherapist Elchanan Berkovitz told Israel National News he had produced a video from pictures of Shalit and wanted a song to go along with it, similar to an effort he made for missing Air Force navigator Ron Arad.I found someone in the Northern Ireland Friends for Israel group who said that a singer named Jim Clint had written a song for Gilad, Berkovitz says.After they made contact and collaborated on the project, Berkovitz posted the video and song on YouTube and showed it to Shalit’s parents on a visit to their protest tent near the office of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.It is one thing to read about people and see pictures on television, Berkovitz relates.To actually be with them and see and share their pain is a humbling experience. I told them the story about Jim Clint, a Christian supporter of Israel, who was moved to write the song about Gilad.Clint lived in Israel for nearly a decade and worked as a maintenance manager at a hostel in Tel Aviv. He is an educator for an Irish Christian community that celebrates the Jewish origins of their faith.Like everyone else I watched with horror the story of the Gaza flotilla and the ongoing conflict between Jews and Arabs, Clint explains. I have witnessed myself the aftermath of a suicide bombing in the Machaneh Yehuda market in Jerusalem in July 1997. I couldn’t help thinking that in all the waves of criticism which is engulfing Israel at the moment, no one was saying anything about a young Israeli in Gaza, deprived of every human right, and facing the most awful threats if his kidnappers don’t get their way.I wanted Gilad’s family to know that in a far away country like Northern Ireland there are people who have not forgotten Gilad and pray for his return to his family. EU to get judicial oversight on human rights

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – EU laws will in a few years' time be subject to legal challenges in the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights, under an independent oversight mechanism made possible by the Lisbon Treaty, a representative of the pan-European body said in an interview.For the first time in history, the EU will be subject to an external independent judicial oversight, and will be scrutinised in the same way as any other of the 47 member countries when it comes to the respect of human rights,Torbjorn Froysnes, the Council of Europe's ambassador in Brussels told EUobserver on Friday (9 July).Last week, EU justice and human rights commissioner Viviane Reding officially kicked off negotiations aimed at making EU institutions subject to binding rulings issued by the Strasbourg-based court, which already has jurisdiction over all 27 member states plus another 20 non-EU countries, including regular human rights defaulters Russia and Turkey.This became possible once the Lisbon Treaty came into force, granting the EU a formal legal status, which allows it to adhere to the European Convention on Human Rights, an international treaty dating back to 1950 and defending rights such as freedom of thought, speech, assembly and religion. The convention is enforced by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, a body of the Council of Europe, as a last resort for citizens and states when all other national avenues for appeal have been exhausted.

Mr Froysnes said negotiations are expected to wrap up before the end of June 2011 and will be followed by a ratification process in all 47 member states plus the European Parliament, which may take several years.When the new agreement is ratified, the EU will be held responsible for its own actions. This doesn't mean that the Council of Europe will get involved in EU decision-making, but a court is a court and its rulings will have to be respected,he said.Jammed by a huge influx of cases, out of which some 90 to 95 percent is routinely dismissed for not meeting eligibility requirements, the Strasbourg court has recently simplified its procedure so as to speed up processing of valid cases, for which can take up to five years for the judges to issue a verdict. A backlog of 120,000 cases were waiting to be dealt with at the end of 2009.With the new procedures, we expect a 25 percent increase in judgements passed,Mr Froysnes said.The scope of the rulings - varying from cases brought by Chechen victims against the Russian state to the introduction of crucifixes in Italian schools - could open a Pandora's Box when it comes to EU legislation, particularly since countries, not just citizens, can formulate complaints. Georgia last year filed a case to the Strasbourg court against Russia for its 2008 military invasion, accusing Moscow of ethnic cleasing.In terms of penalties, just as with any of the 47 members of the convention, the EU could be subject to financial compensations to the damaged party and demanded to change the respective piece of legislation if found that it violates human rights.

The European Parliament recently welcomed the perspective of the EU joining the convention on human rights and recommended that it also join the Council of Europe and its various committees, which cover issues ranging from social rights to prevention of torture.The Council of Europe is a machinery for social reform. There are over 200 binding conventions dealing with all parts of society outside trade relations. But it will take time,Mr Froysnes said.Human rights are not limited to police and military actions, press freedom or discrimination issues, but also apply to the Internet.There is a convention on personal data protection which also covers the internet,the diplomat said. His institution is planning a big event on data protection in January 2011, celebrating 30 years since this convention was signed. The co-organisers are the European Commission, the bloc's data protection authorities, along with industry representatives such as Microsoft, he added.The US, while a member of the other internet-related convention on cybercrime, is so far not part of the data protection agreement. But Mr Froysnes hopes this may change soon, particularly with the Obama administration showing more interest in this dossier.

EU tells states to prepare for banks that fail stress tests

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - European finance ministers have defended stress tests currently being carried out on 91 of the region's banks, amid EU calls for governments to be ready with aid when the results are published on 23 July.With some analysts predicting that between 10-20 banks could require millions of euros in recapitalisations, EU economy commissioner Olli Rehn said on Monday evening (12 July) that national capitals must prepare for any possible pockets of vulnerability by getting their backstops in place.Adding to tensions, a number of market participants have raised a series of doubts over the thoroughness of the tests that are designed to assess banks' abilities to withstand future financial shocks such as a national debt restructuring.News, however, that China last week bought roughly €400 million in Spanish bonds will provide considerable cheer to EU finance ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday, with the return of Asian investors after a two-month pause seen as an important vote of confidence in the eurozone's economy.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of Monday's meetings, German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble denied the tests had been devised so that banks would easily sail through.First it was said that they were too tough, that they would lead all the banks towards bankruptcy. The next day it was said that they were too weak and that the exercises is useless,Mr Schaeuble told reporters.In general, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.Germany's state-owned regional Landesbanken have been identified as some of Europe's weakest, with a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers also showing a number of British banks and Spain's regional lenders as being considerably exposed to non-performing loans.

Time for the €440 billion emergency mechanism?

One question is where European governments would find the necessary money, if called upon, to carry out further expensive bank recapitalisations, with some in Brussels suggesting the eurozone's €440 bail-out fund - known as the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) - could be used.Originally intended to bolster the public finances of governments struggling to raise money on capital markets, supporters say the money could be indirectly channelled into banks. But other EU sources say such a move would be impossible, with late-in-the-day Slovak reluctance to sign up to the bail-out mechanism also raising a further question mark. The country's new government has said it wants its contribution to the scheme, roughly €4.4 billion in loan guarantees, to be reduced.With pressure growing on Bratislava to sign up, the stability fund's manager has said its failure to do so would not prevent the fund from raising money through debt issuances.The EFSF could begin financial operations if necessary, if required, almost immediately,said Klaus Regling.Separately on Monday, EU finance ministers gathered with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy to discuss reform on the EU's economic governance. In a statement after the third taskforce meeting, Mr Van Rompuy said ministers agreed that greater sanctions, including the potential suspension of EU farm and regional payments, were needed for states that repeatedly breached the bloc's budgetary rules. The scope of financial and non-financial sanctions will have to be widened, including in the community budget,said Mr Van Rompuy.

EU in disagreement over anti-fraud reform

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The independence of the EU's anti-fraud investigative body needs to be strengthened, along with its accountability and oversight measures, but member states and the EU parliament disagree on how to move the reforms forward, the commissioner responsible told MEPs on Monday (12 July).We have an obligation to ensure that EU taxpayers' money is properly protected and that we take all possible measures to tackle fraud, particularly during times of economic difficulty, Europe's anti-fraud commissioner, Algirdas Semeta, said during a hearing in the European Parliament's budgetary control committee.He presented a reflection paper on possible ways to reform the European anti-fraud office (Olaf), outlining where the European Parliament and member states are in disagreement and what solutions could be found to move forward. A legislative proposal to this end could be tabled by the end of this year, in view of having it approved by parliament in 2011, Mr Semeta said.Set up in 1999 in the aftermath of a corruption scandal that brought down the European Commission led by Jacques Santer, Olaf is mandated to tackle fraud and corruption affecting EU funds in member states, as well as within the bloc's institutions.Its investigations are administrative, but leads passed on to national authorities can be followed up in criminal proceedings. At the end of June for instance, in a case flagged up by Olaf in 2006, a Bulgarian court sentenced a local businessman to 12 years in jail for embezzling €7.5 million of EU farm subsidies. His wife was also sent behind bars for five years, while four other accomplices got 10 years each.

Another case co-ordinated by Olaf earlier this month saw Norwegian and Swedish border guards arrest a truck driver after he tried to illegally import 28 tonnes of Chinese garlic into the EU.But most Olaf leads do not get picked up by national authorities. German centre-right MEP Ingeborg Grassle, the rapporteur for Olaf reform, pointed out that only seven percent of Olaf's cases end up in court.It is unacceptable that so many cases end up in the paper basket. The council [of ministers] needs to deliver, we need to keep the pressure for better co-operation with national authorities, she said.Echoeing previous requests from MEPs, Mr Semeta said member states should be obliged to report on the follow-up of Olaf leads transmitted to them. Also, prosecutors and police in member states should co-operate with the EU anti-fraud unit already during the stage prior to the opening of investigations. In the past Olaf could not always easily identify the competent authorities of the member state concerned when conducting on-the-spot checks. Olaf should have an easy access to these authorities. This is especially of importance in cases when Olaf encounters resistance from the economic operator directly or indirectly concerned,the commission's reflection paper says.Another sticky issue is the role of the Supervisory Committee, a board of former MEPs, prosecutors and auditors overseeing the work of Olaf and having a say on the priorities and length of the investigations.We will have to seek together the best solutions regarding the dialogue between the institutions on the political governance of Olaf's investigative priorities, as well as the content of this dialogue. We will have also to see if other stakeholders - such as Europol and Eurojust - should be involved, Mr Semeta said.The parliament's and member states' views diverge even more strongly on the nomination procedure, functions and title of the Olaf chief.

So far called a director general,the top Olaf official could see his title changed to executive director if parliament agrees to the member states' proposal. The EU commission however suggested that despite the independent status of Olaf within the executive, the title has to reflect the fact that it has a hierarchical level comparable to a director general.EU decision-makers are also at odds over the length of the mandate of the Olaf chief: the commission proposes a non-renewable seven year term; the European Parliament would like a five-year term, renewable once and a greater say on the list of candidates put forward by the commission; member states, however, would favour a non-renewable term of five years.

Olaf currently has an interim director general, Nicholas Ilett, after its former chief Franz-Hermann Bruner passed away in January. Mr Bruner, a former German public prosecutor, had been at the head of Olaf since its inception.The EU commission will come up with a shortlist in September, with the parliament expected to exchange views with the candidates and issue a recommendation for who should fill the post. Mr Bruner's second term appointment was made in spite of the legislature favouring another candidate from Sweden.Marta Andreasen, a former EU commission chief accountant who was sacked in 2002 after she refused to sign off the accounts for being open to fraud, has made public her intention to run for the Olaf top post.
Currently an MEP affiliated with Britain's Independece Party (UKIP), Ms Andreasen told Accountancy Age on 15 April: If you don't understand an audit report, and people who are not accountants and auditors have a problem with that, then you will never find anything we have to investigate.

Commission gambit could end decade-long GMO impasse

In a potentially risky gamble to break an EU impasse over the cultivation of Genetically Modified Organisms which has lasted more than a decade, the European Commission will on Tuesday (13 July) propose a plan that both helps anti-GMO member states to ban them and lets those countries that favour the technology to move full-speed ahead with commercial planting.Until March this year when the new commission gave the green light to a GM potato variety produced by German chemical and agribusiness giant Basf, sparking vociferous controversy across the bloc, no new GM crops had been approved in the EU since some Monsanto maize in 1998.The EU is split almost down the middle on this most divisive of agricultural topics. No side is able to mount a majority in the Council of Ministers. This makes no one happy, turning anti-GMO countries into the target of Brussels - and US and WTO - ire, and frustrating the ability of pro-GMO countries to fully develop their agricultural sectors in the way their governments wish to.In a new twist, the commission is betting that if it extends the ability of countries to ban organisms on socio-economic grounds, and, in the longer run, to cultural and ethical grounds on top of the current contamination-only grounds, the anti-GMO states will soften their opposition, potentially a slew of new crop approvals at Brussels level, perhaps as soon as in the coming months.The gambit is possibly the first ever example of Brussels returning back to member states a power it had earlier taken upon itself.

Even a staunchly pro-GMO state such as Spain, which believes that all of the EU should be able to produce GM products, and the arch-federalist Belgium, which is agnostic on the GMO controversy but thinks the move sets a dangerous precedent of reversing EU integration, have yet to be won over to the idea.The biotech industry, while applauding the commission for trying to break the impasse with a creative idea and hopeful that it will open new markets for their products, says that the move is in the end anti-science and could make it easier to restrict GM farming even in states more open to the technology.Antonio Villarroel, secretary-general of Antama, a Spanish biotech association said: We have real fears that the new proposals will make it harder and harder for us to co-exist successfully with other types of farming.Meanwhile, environmental groups and farmers who oppose GMO technology are frightened that the process will carve new inroads for GM plants and animals and say that any agreement to more authorisations at EU level would be a Faustian pact.

Beyond their desire to see an EU-wide ban on GMO cultivation, they say that the new green light for a looser interpretation of the grounds for a national ban are legally worthless and wide open to court challenges. In effect, the anti-GMO states would be signing off on new GM crops elsewhere in Europe without legally armour-plating their own bans.In an unusual alliance, both anti-GMO Austria and the pro-GMO Netherlands back the commission's move, however.Looking at the commission's plan in more detail, the executive will on Tuesday publish new guidelines on what is termed co-existence of GM and non-GM agriculture - referring to the possible contamination of non-GM crops by their lab-tweaked cousins - replacing guidance that dates back to 2003.The EU move, which would extend these grounds for a ban to include socio-economic reasons, is technically-speaking non-legislative and so could be enacted immediately.Alongside this, the commission will publish legislative proposals to extend the grounds to cultural or ethical reasons. Catholic Poland for example believes that the use of GM seeds encroaches on the sphere of public morality.In return, the anti-GMO states would embrace a more positive stance regarding GMO authorisation at the stage of assessment health and environmental risks at the EU level.

No privacy rights within 100 miles of U.S. border

10 July 2010: It is no secret that I am pro-law enforcement – very pro-law enforcement, in fact. Some of my best friends are law enforcement officers who work in local, state and federal agencies. On my wedding day in 1991, I lost a friend who was a police officer in Houston, Texas when he pulled over a car and was subsequently shot during the course of a traffic stop. I also lost a friend and several acquaintances, all law enforcement officers, in the 2001 attack on America by Islamic terrorists. Their job is among the most dangerous, especially in today’s environment, so I am in favor of any tool that would keep them and our country safer.Within the last month, however, I personally found myself at odds with law enforcement while traveling by car close to the U.S. border with Canada. I was within 5 miles of our northern border in the state of New York, yet well inside the U.S. with no intention of crossing the border. In fact, I could not even see the border and was not in close proximity to any border crossing point. Nonetheless, I encountered what could be best described as a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.

Although I personally was not subjected to any searches and the questions asked of me were relatively non-invasive, at least one or two other motorists appeared to have hit a speed bump on the road called homeland security. They were pulled aside, and one of the federal officers appeared to be holding or looking at a cell phone or small camera. The license plates on both vehicles I observed being subjected to a secondary search were of U.S. origin.Due to schedule issues, I was unable to perform any on-site inquiries about the apparent mobile checkpoint, although I contacted a law enforcement source later that day who verified that it was a rolling checkpoint that was being conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol. What greatly disturbed me, however, was what I learned later about the activities taking place at the makeshift secondary inspection location. This is where the two motorists were pulled aside, and one agent appeared to be inspecting an electronic device from one of the vehicles.I was surprised to learn that federal agents, specifically those with the U.S. Border Patrol, have the right to inspect an individual’s cell phone (including call history, text messages and photographs), computers, cameras and even GPS units without needing reasonable cause or suspicion. Furthermore, that right extends up to 100 miles inland from our north and south borders.My source provided me with an overview of the criteria the agents were using to select vehicles for a secondary inspection, although for legitimate security reasons, I will not disclose that criteria. I will confirm, however, that the additional inspection was not due to the physical appearance or any factors related to race/ethnicity of the vehicle occupants that would suggest that they might be from outside the U.S. In fact, I was told that those manning the checkpoint were not sufficiently equipped to handle the detention of illegal aliens, especially if more than one or two happened to be discovered.Although I was assured that persons of interest, if located, would be detained appropriately,I am unconvinced that detention would extend to suspected illegal aliens whose names were not on any such list.My law enforcement source candidly expressed similar doubts during our conversation.

In summary, if you find yourself traveling on public roads within 100 miles of either of our land borders, some of the freedoms granted to you as an American by the U.S. Constitution do not appear to apply. As I stated, I am pro-law enforcement, and understand that the men and women of law enforcement are doing what they have been ordered to do. I also hold dear the rights and freedoms given to me by the U.S. Constitution. The two should never be - must never be -mutually exclusive. In this case, that’s exactly what they’ve become.While the corporate media continues to peddle its pabulum to the masses who seem to be more concerned about Lindsay Lohan and Lebron James, our rights are on the fast track to extinction. Washington, DC – As the NAACP plans to use their group’s prestige to bash the tea party movement, members of the Project 21 black leadership network are urging delegates at the NAACP’s national convention not to turn the NAACP into a pawn for progressive political bosses. As a frequent speaker at tea party rallies around the country, I can assure the NAACP that the tea party movement’s concerns are about President Obama’s policies and not his race, said Project 21 fellow Deneen Borelli. I’m deeply concerned that the NAACP is being used as a political tool to do the dirty work of the progressive movement. Instead of criticizing tea parties, the NAACP would be better served denouncing the racist comments made by a member of the New Black Panther Party and their voter intimidation outside a Philadelphia polling place in the last presidential election.According to a report in the Kansas City Star, the NAACP, which is conducting its 101st annual convention in that city, will take up a resolution as early as Tuesday to urge all people of good will to repudiate the racism of Tea Parties, and to stand in opposition to its drive to push our country back to the pre-civil rights era.Kansas City NAACP chapter president Anita Russell said the tea party movement is really not about limited government. The resolution reportedly dwells on explicitly racist behavior that relies upon anecdotal posters opposing President Obama and allegations of the use of racial epithets by tea party participants.

Project 21’s Borelli added: I urge the delegates to read the Contract from America – a list of policy objectives for Congress that was developed by tea party members nationwide. These objectives are clearly about limited government and liberty. He tried to get me to apologize for racial epithets hurled at Congressman John Lewis that only Lewis seemed to hear. I would guess neither Al Sharpton nor the overwhelming majority of NAACP members have ever been to a tea party, so they speak from intentional ignorance. While liberals scream racism at the tea parties purely because of their audacity to oppose Obama, it’s the progressives who seem to feel free to use racial epithets against others as they know – as is seen in this instance – that the NAACP turns a blind partisan eye.The NAACP’s Russell reportedly is pretty certain the anti-tea party resolution will pass.Progressives have hijacked the NAACP to the extent that the group stands silent as conservative blacks suffer indignities for their beliefs. Some NAACP even egg on this appalling behavior – providing political cover and lapdog services for these elitists, said Project 21 member Kevin Martin. As a conservative black man, I have felt more welcomed and at home within the tea party movement than among those of my own who side with the this new NAACP. If a few random signs of President Obama looking like the Joker is indeed racist, then where was the NAACP when conservative blacks are depicted as lawn jockeys, Oreos and Uncle Toms? The level and depth of ignorance and misrepresentation of truth is unquantifiable,said Project 21 chairman Mychal Massie, another speaker at tea party events in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Michigan.The simple truth is that the tea party movement is about smaller government, lower taxes and an adherence to the Constitution. Undercover in Anaheim: Exposing HAMAS & al Qaeda Sympathizers in the U.S.

Investigation Background

There is a very active and extremely effective fifth column of Islamists at work in the U.S. They exist and conduct their activities under innocuous sounding names. They solicit membership, logistical assistance and financial backing in open venues provided by the freedoms afforded by the United States. They also appear to have very noble humanitarian goals to anyone who might be motivated into giving them a cursory inspection. Under this thin veneer of apocryphal legitimacy, however, lies a nefarious agenda that includes providing support to Islamic terrorists and exposes relationships with communist and anarchist groups active within the U.S.To better understand what is taking place in the U.S. today, consider that right before the outbreak of World War II German-linked groups were established that would actively promote a favorable view of Nazi Germany, distribute propaganda and ultimately influence public opinion through propaganda to favor the Nazi Party. Known as the German-American Bund, their ultimate objective was to deconstruct America’s democracy in favor of the Third Reich. Prior to the U.S. involvement in the war, the German-American Bund even held a major conference at Madison Square Garden in support of Hitler.Now imagine the Japanese and Germans both sending agents as both students and professors to our campuses in the wake of Pearl Harbor, promoting the idea that American racism was the cause of World War II and America’s fight against the Axis, not the attack on December 7th, 1941. Back then the nation was largely agrarian with fewer people attending college unlike today when Saudi and other Emirate money is influencing our colleges all over the U.S. to promote an Islamic or Pan-Arab nationalist agenda against western-style democracy.

Both scenarios provide similarities of what is taking place today. The difference, however, is that average Americans and most Americans in government at that time actually investigated and ultimately identified the Third Reich sponsored activities for what they were. When the war commenced, the Bund largely disappeared as a direct result of government investigation into the activities of enemy aliens, a capable media, and a public disdain for the supporters of Hitler.The current enemies of the U.S., Israel and our very freedoms appear to have recreated and refined the Bund playbook used by our former enemies. No one, except for those few who have the initiative, patriotic motivation and concern for our country and the nation of Israel are doing anything to expose the true agenda of these enemies of the state who are presently operating unmolested within our borders. Israel today is what England was to the U.S. at the start of World War II: a democratic aircraft carrier against encroaching fascism monopoly on the European Continent, only this time in the theater is in the Middle East.This investigative report exposes one of the most active pro-Palestinian, pro-Arab and anti-Israeli groups operating across the U.S. Al Awda, a/k/a The Palestine Right of Return Coalition, is the new Bund in America and is surely the most pernicious of all of these subversive Bund-like groups who are subverting our anti-terror efforts and propagating propaganda at levels previously unseen. Al Awda is it is a movement that makes war on Israel and our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting Arab and Muslim terrorism.In order to determine the true nature and extent of their activities, this investigator conducted an undercover investigation at the 8th Annual Al Awda International Conference that was held from 30 April to 1 May 2010 at the Hilton Hotel & Conference Center in Anaheim, California. By infiltrating the conference and using covert methods to secure video and other documentation, this investigative report reveals the agendas, tactics and affiliations of Al-Awda and their affiliates, individuals and supporters who are subverting our anti-terror efforts and propagating anti-Israel, anti-U.S., and even pro-communist propaganda.

Overview: Investigative Findings

Investigative findings identified some complex and deliberately convoluted relationships between Al Awda and other Arab and Islamic groups, including but not limited to al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas. Although Al Awda claims to have about 15 chapters spread throughout the U.S., this investigation confirmed their affiliation with other Islamic organizations promoting the causes of jihad or totalitarian Arab nationalism. These affiliations and associations serve as a force multiplier for the agenda of Al Awda.The Council on American Islamic Relations, or CAIR, a known Hamas front that continues to have access to the highest offices and officials in Washington despite its many publicized associations with terrorists, is also affiliated with Al-Awda. Islamic civil rights groups like the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), a group less concerned with civil rights as their name would imply, was also found to have connections to Al-Awda. Arab and Islamic groups such as the Students for Justice in Palestine or Muslim Students Association are also affiliated with Al-Awda and found on over 150 college campuses in the US and Canada.Al-Awda’s associations do not stop with exclusively pro-Islamic or pro-Palestinian groups. On-site investigation further verified that Al-Awda is actively coordinating their efforts with communist and anarchist groups in the United States, each having a visual presence at this conference. Those groups include International ANSWER and the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). The ISM, created by the PLO to mimic western radical revolutionary ideals, is active within the U.S. putting a good face on America’s enemies overseas. This includes violations of the U.S. tax codes and civil rights violations against Jews in America and abroad in violation of U.S. laws.These organizations are based on deception and promoting endless war by defining themselves peace activists or human rights advocates. In truth, their actual goal is to perpetuate by deception the very war they claim they seek to end.

Furthermore, evidence obtained during the course of this investigation suggests clear violations of U.S. federal law were promoted at this conference. To date, little (if any) official investigation by government officials has been done, and these groups remain active and unencumbered by federal investigation and oversight.

Despite the politically subversive nature of these groups, previous and our current administration have not only been conspicuously absent in directing investigative powers to such events, but actually participated in them. This fact was promoted by Al-Awda as documented during the course of this investigation; some had referenced the tacit support of their group and ideology by the current administration, citing AG Holder’s appearance at the ADC conference organized and co-sponsored by Jess GHANNAM. GHANNAM is co-founder of multiple front groups besides Al Awda, frequently with same membership as Al-Awda such as the Palestinian Academic Campaign to Boycott Israel, the ADC and the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) that trains radical agents to send to Middle East.Specifically, US Attorney General Eric Holder, the chief US law enforcement officer of the U.S., was the keynote speaker at a recent conference of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), an event that was sponsored by Al-Awda co-sponsor Jess GHANNAM. The theme of the event was 30 years of activism that included promoting a nationwide boycott against American-Jewish and Israeli businesses in defiance of anti-boycott laws established by Congress. A high level official from the Commerce department also spoke at the event, even though Commerce is responsible for enforcing the anti-boycott laws. The same conference featured as another speaker by video conference, Azmi BISHARA, a wanted Hezbollah spy, even though Hezbollah is on the State Department list of designated terrorist organizations and responsible for the murder of 241 U.S. marines in Beirut in 1983.In addition to the influence wielded within this administration’s Justice Department, this investigation revealed that Al-Awda has developed an effective influence inside Obama’s U.S. State Department. According to information developed during the course of this investigation, Al-Awda lobbied successfully with the Obama State Department, under the direction of Hillary Clinton, to allow approximately 2,000 Palestinian refugees currently living in Iraq to live permanently in the United States. According to Al-Awda spokespersons, the Iraqi nationals will be permitted to reside in the U.S. until they can be relocated to their new home in the Middle East once Israel is eliminated. Investigation revealed that these Palestinians were, in fact, close allies of Saddam Hussein. Their refugee status is a direct result of their cooperation and collusion with Saddam Hussein during the liberation of Iraq. Because of that collusion with Saddam Hussein and his military, the Iraqis want them removed from their country.

Rather than moving them to the West Bank or Gaza, they will instead be brought to the U.S. in order to facilitate the goals and objectives of their sponsor Al Awda. They will be used to further increase Al Awda’s presence at future conferences, where they will undoubtedly promote attacks on Israel and even the United States for its presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.Investigation also revealed circuitous linkage between Al Awda, their affiliates, and their involvement with the so-called Gaza Flotilla, the ships assisting Hamas under the pretext of carrying humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza.As a direct result of the disinformation campaign by the corporate media, formed in part by this administration’s own statements regarding the ships, Americans have not been told that some operatives aboard the ship who attacked Israeli IDF soldiers are members of al Qaeda and Hamas, as verified by the Northeast Intelligence Network with an Israeli intelligence official and a U.S. intelligence officer stationed in the Middle East. Under the pretext of providing humanitarian aid, the ships Furthermore, the majority of the Gaza Flotilla’s activities, including but not limited to logistics and funding, actually originated inside the United States.

Overview: Methods & Tactics of Deception

Unsurprisingly, the most basic evidence obtained during this undercover assignment in Anaheim verified the group’s familiar tactics of characterizing Palestinians as victims of Israeli aggression. They refer to the Jews in the nation of Israel as Zionists in an attempt to avoid the appearance of anti-Semitism, and even present some Jews at their conference as supporters of their agenda. Under their innocuous sounding public agenda, they also make effective use high ranking government officials as a means of legitimization.One deceptive method these groups share in the promotion of war is with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement against Israel, of which Al Awda plays a major role. History illustrates that divestments and boycotts of Jews and Jewish businesses were one of the first tactics of persecution practiced by the Nazis in 1933 to destroy the Jews. Based on the undercover findings from the most recent conference, however, evidence found that the Al-Awda deception is much more organized, strategically planned and carefully executed.A critical aspect of this deception is to trick people – especially those in the U.S. – that Israel is an apartheid state, often making the erroneous comparison to South Africa in the 1980’s. However, Israel is the only state in the Middle East that is not an apartheid state. What people are not told is that Arab citizens living in Israel can and do serve as judges, are given preferences in universities and enjoy the same rights as the Jewish citizens of Israel. Although Arabs are not granted automatic citizenship, they may apply for citizenship just as in any other country. Despite such rights and privileges, Al Awda’s primary goal is the total dismantling of the Jewish national homeland that is Israel.

To maintain and propagate this deception, Al Awda’s leadership developed Points of Unity, a newspeak term for the termination of Israel and a restriction on the very freedom of speech they claim to champion. It is well known that exercising free speech in Gaza or the West Bank can net you a bullet in the back of your head. While the Points do not state that they desire the outright destruction of Israel, they demand the liberation of all Palestinian lands (a.k.a. Israel) in addition to the West Bank and Gaza.Al Awda has developed into a very profitable entity as well. As a nonprofit corporation, it raises hundreds of thousands of dollars ostensibly for Palestinian victims and refugees, but cumulative investigative findings suggest that a large portion of money raised is diverted to continue the struggle against Israel.

Over the last several years, Al Awda’s leadership has refined their methods of marketing their financial goals to the West to make it appear as an innocuous humanitarian mission, using these very conferences to disseminate their propaganda.
Investigation determined that this conference alone netted Al Awda $23,000 in donations. Although short of their goal of $100,000, the sponsors assured attendees that the money would be put to good use.
