Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir endorsed Donald Trump for president in a highly irregular move, as top officials from both nations usually avoid wading into one another’s internal politics and do not wish to be seen as favoring one side over another.His comments, in an interview published Wednesday, came at a particularly inconvenient time for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in Washington and was set to meet Thursday with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic nominee in the coming election.In an interview with Bloomberg, Ben Gvir asserted that a win for Trump in the November vote would be better for Israel, implying that only the Republican nominee would offer support for action against Tehran.“I believe that with Trump, Israel will receive the backing to act against Iran,” Ben Gvir told Bloomberg. “With Trump it will be clearer that enemies must be defeated.”“The US has always stood behind Israel in terms of armaments and weapons, yet [during the war in Gaza] the sense was that we were being reckoned with — that we were trying to be prevented from winning,” Ben Gvir said. “That happened on Biden’s watch and fed Hamas with lots of energy.”The comments were published just hours before Netanyahu was set to address the US Congress. The US and other allies had long warned against the operation in the Strip’s southernmost city, where over a million Palestinians sought shelter after being displaced from the Strip’s north and center. Israel said the offensive was necessary to dismantle Hamas’s last remaining battalions. For all the hullabaloo around the first official flight of Wing of Zion, Israel’s so-called “Air Force One,” the first official flight on the aircraft didn’t get off to a very auspicious start.First, the Prime Minister’s Office discovered that there were unexpected weight restrictions for the transatlantic flight to Washington, and had to send staffers and equipment over a week early. Then, a small crack was discovered on the cockpit windshield while it was on the tarmac in the US, which had to be fixed before it flew back last week.With those issues behind it — not to mention years of numerous cost overruns, delays and political controversy — the 28-year-old repurposed Boeing 767-300ER was finally ready this week to take Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the US to meet President Joe Biden and address a joint session of Congress.The plane arrived in Israel in 2016, and the conversion — said to have cost around NIS 750 million ($207 million), far, far beyond initial projections — was largely completed by 2019, when the aircraft conducted its first test flight.At the end of its extensive renovations, the plane was said to include a private office for the prime minister, a bedroom with a bathroom and shower, a fully stocked kitchen, a meeting room and even a “war room.”Netanyahu’s opponents have long argued that the plane, intended for the use of Israeli heads of state and government, is a waste of taxpayer money, and have branded it a symbol of Netanyahu’s overindulgence, while his supporters have defended it as a necessary safety measure.The limitations of the plane affected the journalists accompanying the prime minister. Because of weight limits, only 10 members of Israel’s diplomatic press corps could fly out with the official delegation, this writer for The Times of Israel among them.Since the plane surprisingly does not have an entertainment system, the group was encouraged to download movies to their devices ahead of time, and to bring books.The reporters arrived at Ben Gurion Airport at 6 a.m. on Monday to go through the Shin Bet security check. Two hours later, before boarding a bus from the gate to Wing of Zion, the press corps received a security briefing about the plane by a Shin Bet representative.He said the aircraft was divided into four sections — the press in the back, then security staff and members of the prime minister’s delegation, then senior aides, and finally the premier’s personal section. Under no circumstances were journalists to leave the two aft sections.In addition, there were to be no pictures taken of the flight crew, which includes Israel Air Force pilots and attendants from Arkia and El Al airlines, though many are actually no longer working regularly in aviation, and have moved on to other careers while Wing of Zion isn’t flying.Connecting phones to the plane’s USB ports was another no-no — also a security dictate.The bus ride through the airport took about five minutes. Wing of Zion was parked in the same remote section of the airport where the chartered El Al planes that prime ministers have used until now have parked.Seeing “State of Israel” emblazoned on the fuselage, just above the country’s seal, was certainly memorable. Government officials who had worked on the project in recent years were on hand, clearly delighted with the result of their work. They spoke with childlike enthusiasm as they pointed out their favorite features of the plane.The press climbed up the movable staircase leading into the back of the plane, and examined the interior. It was bright and clean, with wood-patterned dividers between the sections. The seats, arrayed in a 2-3-2 layout, were roomy, blue with white headrests.After the journalists came families of hostages and fallen soldiers who were joining the premier to fill up the second section, along with security guards. Around 9:30 a.m., Netanyahu’s convoy pulled up. He and his wife Sara shook hands with the families before the prime minister gave a statement to the members of the media laying out the purpose of his trip, and his intention to maintain bipartisan support for Israel as threats from Iran grow.The passengers then seated themselves and the plane was ready to depart. After takeoff, the excellent flight staff was certainly eager to accommodate the needs of the passengers, happy to make coffees and cocktails in between meals — including an iced coffee with soy milk for this lactose-intolerant correspondent. Trays of drinks and food were also ferried regularly from the rear kitchen to the prime minister’s sections up front.But the staff’s helpful attitude couldn’t hide the plane’s major flaw, as far as journalists are concerned: Though there is Wi-Fi onboard, it shares bandwidth with the prime minister’s own network. The crew controlled how much of that bandwidth was apportioned to the journalists, and it wasn’t much.During the flight, Netanyahu’s office posted pictures on Instagram of Sara Netanyahu reading documents while in blue pajamas. Meanwhile, journalists who had expected to be able to work during the long flight had to make do with sending messages to their editors by WhatsApp during the short periods the press internet was on. Access to websites or other internet functionality — a basic feature of transatlantic flights in the modern era — were not available.At times, the attendants would leave the curtains to the prime minister’s section open, allowing a view of Netanyahu sitting in his conference room. But at no point were journalists allowed to tour the front of the plane and let the public see what their tax shekels had purchased.Though the flight was long, there were some poignant moments.Yaakov Argamani, who was on the plane with his daughter Noa weeks after her rescue from Hamas captivity, organized a minyan so that he could say the Kaddish prayer for the deceased over his wife Liora, who died of brain cancer earlier this month. Journalists, relatives of hostages and the government point man for the hostages Gal Hirsch joined the service.Rabbi Yehoshua Shani, whose son Major Uri Shani fell in battle on October 7, said Kaddish with Argamani.The intimate familiarity that can develop immediately among Israelis was on full display, as mothers and grandmothers of hostages still held by Hamas spent much of the flight trying to come up with a shidduch — a match — for one of the journalists whom they discovered was single.Compared to the situation in Washington once Wing of Zion landed, the flight was fairly calm.The schedule for Netanyahu’s speech to Congress was set, but other highlights of the trip constantly moved around. He had expected to meet Biden on Tuesday, but with the president leaving COVID-19 isolation only on Tuesday afternoon, that meeting was pushed back to Thursday. Vice President Kamala Harris, who said she could not fly to DC to preside over Netanyahu’s speech as Senate President, also agreed to meet the premier on Thursday.Arrangements around the meeting with former president Donald Trump were more chaotic. After much speculation around where and if the meeting would take place, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would be hosting Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Wednesday.As journalists scrambled to understand how that might work on the same day as the speech, Trump took down the post and said he would actually meet Netanyahu on Thursday — the same day as the White House meetings with Biden and Harris.More speculation and scrambling.Finally, Trump said that, per Netanyahu’s request, the meeting would take place on Friday.That meant that Netanyahu would stay in the US over Shabbat, again at taxpayers’ expense. Many hostages’ families were expected to fly back commercially — paid for by the government — instead of waiting for Netanyahu’s flight back on Saturday night.And so Wing of Zion was slated to touch down back in Israel after its first trip with the prime minister on Sunday, back to a country at war and facing deep political divisions. Netanyahu, after five days in the US, will be expected to move a hostage deal forward and continue pursuing Hamas.If he manages to do both, he might have a chance of staying in office long enough to fly on Wing of Zion to more destinations — perhaps even Saudi Arabia.

Russia and Kyrgyzstan sign radioactive decontamination deal.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, July 24 (AFP) Jul 24, 2024-Kyrgyzstan ratified an agreement with Russia on Wednesday for the mass decontamination of radioactive areas that pose a threat to the local population.The mountainous central Asian country, a former Soviet republic, is still suffering the environmental consequences of uranium and other heavy metals for mining during the Soviet era.Ninety-two sites contain more than 300 million cubic metres (10.5 billion cubic feet) of toxic and radioactive waste."The agreement between the Kyrgyz and Russian governments to cooperate in the rehabilitation of territories in Kyrgyzstan affected by uranium extraction and the mining industry has been ratified," President Sadyr Japarov's office said in a statement.The agreement aims to "ensure the safety of the population living in areas where there is waste from former uranium mines."Without decontamination, natural disasters like landslides -- which are frequent in the region -- could send the waste spilling into rivers that traverse the entire Central Asian region, potentially contaminating millions.Kyrgyzstan held a separate ceremony on Wednesday marking the removal of the final 55 tonnes of Samin, a toxic rocket fuel component, from a village near the capital Bishkek -- another chemical waste hangover from the Soviet Union."The disposal of the rocket fuel component 'Samin' will significantly reduce the risk of an environmental emergency and enhance the safety of the local population," Deputy Defence Minister Emil Osmonov said.The fuel will be transported to Germany to be destroyed next month, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which supported the work, said in a statement.Russian state-run nuclear giant Rosatom is also running nuclear waste decontamination efforts in neighbouring ex-Soviet countries Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.The EU and World Bank have both allocated funds to help restoration efforts.

The Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday that a soldier was seriously injured a day earlier by rocket fire from Lebanon on the Mount Dov area, as the Hezbollah terror group claimed a number of attacks on communities and outposts along the northern border.Rocket and drone alert sirens sounded in northern communities near the border with Lebanon multiple times throughout the day.The IDF said Tuesday evening that several projectiles had been fired at Mount Dov — which houses several military bases and no towns — and some 15 rockets were launched from Lebanon at the Kiryat Shmona area. Earlier in the day, a barrage of rockets was fired from Lebanon at the Galilee Panhandle.Some of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome system.Additionally, there were several drone attacks on northern Israel. According to the IDF, several explosive drones impacted the Mount Meron area while others were intercepted.The military said troops responded to the attacks by shelling launch sites with artillery, and fighter jets struck a Hezbollah rocket launcher in Kfarhamam, infrastructure in Ayta ash-Shab, and an observation post in Khiam.Additionally, a drone strike was carried out against a Hezbollah operative in southern Lebanon’s Tallouseh, the IDF said. According to the military, the operative had been identified leaving a site from which rockets were launched at the Galilee Panhandle.Also on Tuesday, the IDF said that it struck a car in southern Lebanon’s Shaqra that was transporting several Hezbollah operatives.On Wednesday, the military said fighter jets struck a building in southern Lebanon’s Chihine that the IDF says was used by Hezbollah to fire rockets at Israel.Additionally, a Hezbollah weapons depot was struck in Kfarhamam, the military said. After long rejecting the idea in public, Cairo is privately moving toward allowing IDF troops to remain in a key border strip used by Hamas to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Gaza, a senior Israeli official and a second official familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.The potential shift in Egypt’s position would likely complicate Hamas’s standing in the ongoing hostage negotiations, as the terror group is demanding that Israel withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor as part of the staged ceasefire deal.Israeli negotiators since May had been discussing withdrawing from the roughly 14-kilometer (9-mile) border stretch, with the US leading trilateral discussions with Israel and Egypt about the creation of an underground wall along the corridor at the south of the Strip and the installation of a surveillance system to thwart any weapons smuggling into Gaza, the two officials said.But seeking to capitalize off a boosted position on the battlefield earlier this month, Netanyahu shifted course and declared that the IDF remaining in Philadelphi was nonnegotiable.The demand appeared to contradict the hostage proposal the prime minister approved in May, which envisioned Israel withdrawing from the entirety of the Gaza Strip in the second of three six-week phases of the ceasefire deal.A member of Israel’s hostage negotiating team along with an Arab mediator expressed concern to The Times of Israel earlier this month that the new demand from Netanyahu — along with another new one, to create a mechanism to prevent the smuggling of weapons into northern Gaza — risked jeopardizing the hostage talks.Israel took over the Gaza side of the Philadelphi Corridor in May as part of its offensive in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah. But the Israeli official explained that Cairo has gradually relaxed this effort in recent weeks, as Jerusalem has hardened its negotiating stance.“They too don’t want Hamas to resume smuggling on the border,” the Israeli official said of Egypt.The official clarified that an agreement has not yet been reached and that Israel is seeking to remain in the Philadelphi Corridor for an extended period, though not permanently.Smuggling tunnels were dug under the Gaza-Egypt border to get around the Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed after Hamas took over Gaza in 2007. Some of the tunnels were large enough for vehicles. Hamas brought in weapons and supplies, and Gaza residents smuggled in commercial goods, from livestock to construction materials.That changed over the past decade, as Egypt battled Islamic State militants in Sinai. The Egyptian military cracked down on the tunnels and destroyed hundreds of them. The tunnels are not all gone, though, and Israel says it has uncovered dozens since entering the corridor in May.While Egypt has begun moving toward Israel’s position regarding the Philadelphi Corridor, Israel has inched toward Cairo’s stance regarding the management of the nearby Rafah Border Crossing, the officials said.Egypt shuttered Rafah after Israel took over the Gaza side in early May, conditioning its reopening on the Palestinian Authority replacing the IDF at the crossing.Israel initially rejected any PA involvement in the management of the gate, with Netanyahu likening the Ramallah-based government to Hamas and vowing not to give the former a foothold in the Strip.But recent weeks have also seen Jerusalem rethink its position on that key issue, as Netanyahu’s circle begins to recognize that the PA is the only viable alternative at the moment, even as it pushes for major reforms in Ramallah, the officials said.Moreover, reopening the Rafah Crossing is integral to the success of the hostage deal, given that the latest proposal specifies that wounded Hamas fighters will be allowed to travel through the gate to receive medical treatment during the first phase of the ceasefire.Egypt’s embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.The Associated Press contributed to this report.

An official public announcement on her resignation is expected later this morning, two law enforcement sources said.In her resignation letter, obtained from a senior official who received it, Cheatle wrote that the "scrutiny over the last week has been intense and will continue to remain as our operational tempo increases." She added she takes "full responsibility for the security lapse.""In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director," she wrote.Cheatle’s resignation comes a day after she faced questions from angry lawmakers from both parties who were exasperated over the Secret Service’s failure to protect Trump.“I’m not going to get into specifics of the day,” Cheatle testified, citing an ongoing investigation. “There was a plan in place to provide overwatch, and we are still looking into responsibilities.”Both Democratic and Republican committee members said she should resign over her "incompetence" and her "lame excuses."“You’re full of s--- today!” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said, slamming Cheatle for dodging questions and being “completely dishonest” about her cooperation with the committee. A former fire official, Corey Comperatore, died in the shooting. Two others were injured and hospitalized, and their conditions have improved.

Vice President Kamala Harris will not preside over or attend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's joint address to Congress on Wednesday. Instead, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md. will oversee the event, two Congressional aides told NBC News Monday.While the vice president typically presides over joint addresses, Harris is scheduled to be in Indianapolis on her presidential campaign which she launched on Sunday after President Joe Biden dramatically dropped his re-election bid and endorsed her in the race against former President Donald Trump. However she is expected to meet with Netanyahu separately during his visit.NBC News has reached out to Harris' office for comment.Cardin will preside over the joint address, after Sen. Patty Murray D-WA. declined an invitation to oversee the event, her office confirmed to NBC News. Murray, the President pro tempore of the Senate, will also not attend the address, which dozens of liberal lawmakers are expected to boycott.“Securing a lasting, mutual ceasefire is of the utmost importance right now, and I will continue to push for one to be reached as soon as possible. BEIJING — Senior representatives from Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed a joint declaration in China’s capital Beijing on Tuesday aimed at building unity and ending a decades-long rift as the fighting with Israel in Gaza rumbles on.The agreement, called the “Beijing Declaration to End the Division and Strengthen Palestinian National Unity”, was announced at the end of three days of meetings here and was hailed today as a breakthrough by China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who called it “a historic moment for the cause of Palestine’s liberation.” The deal also highlights China’s ambitions to be a more significant diplomatic player in the Middle East and a rival to the United States as a broker on the global stage.  It comes just over a year after China helped broker an agreement  between Iran and Saudi Arabia that saw them restore diplomatic relations after years of soaring tensions between the Middle Eastern powerhouses, unnerving many in Washington.The eight-point declaration states that both sides will agree to the “formation of a temporary national unity government by agreement of the Palestinian factions,” according to a copy of the document seen by NBC News.It adds that “the formed government shall exercise its powers and jurisdictions over all Palestinian territories, affirming the unity of the West Bank, Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, with the government starting the unification of all Palestinian institutions in the territories and the preparation for holding general elections.”The signatories have also agreed to “resist and thwart attempts to displace our people” from the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem “and affirm the illegality of settlement and settlement expansion in accordance with the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council, the U.N. General Assembly, and the opinion of the International Court of Justice.” A Palestinian official familiar with the declaration told NBC News, “the implementation on the ground” is what matters now.“The preferred way out for Hamas would be to embed itself in some post-partisan Palestinian governance structure,” Jon Alterman, the director of the Middle East program at the Washington based Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, told NBC News on the eve of Palestinian talks. “Whether it’s going to be acceptable to others — the United States, Israel, Europe — I don’t know,” he added.In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Hossam Badran said the declaration was an “additional positive step on the path to achieving Palestinian national unity” and that the groups agreed on Palestinian demands to end the conflict, including “a cease-fire, complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, relief and reconstruction.”President Joe Biden’s administration has proposed a plan that would ultimately lead to a permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of all hostages and major post-war reconstruction. It also envisions a revamped Palestinian Authority to rule Gaza once the conflict ends. Israel rejected that idea, but has not put forward a credible alternative for how Gaza will be governed and by who. China is not directly involved in the U.S.-led efforts between Israel and Hamas toward a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, but is looking to stake out a role in post-war reconstruction.  China has also made no secret of its desire to hold an international peace conference, and hosting Palestinian unity talks is seen as a diplomatic step toward that.“There is nothing to lose (for China) by hosting such an event,” Fariz Mehdawi, the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to China, said in a recent interview with NBC News in Beijing, “In diplomacy either you do some good political moves, or it will be considered a failure for you.”After a first round of meetings in April ended with little progress, China waited until the participants had left the country before it announced the talks had taken place. A second round planned last month was scrapped after Hamas and Fatah pulled out at the last minute.  Power struggles have long split Fatah and Hamas, a divide that deepened in 2007 with Hamas’ violent takeover of the Gaza Strip following elections the year before. The rupture has since left the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority, governing only parts of the occupied West Bank and increasingly criticized as having eroding legitimacy, according to studies by Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. Israel has exercised power over both the West Bank and Gaza in different ways.The bitter divisions and the West’s refusal to accept any government that includes Hamas unless it expressly recognizes Israel has thwarted repeated attempts at healing the rift. “The historical divide between Hamas and Fatah is deep, with years of hostility and ideological differences,” said Maria Papageorgiou, a lecturer in politics and international relations at the University of Exeter in the U.K. She added that successfully mediating between the different factions would be “a major diplomatic win” for China. Mehdawi, the Palestinian ambassador, said Beijing “cannot call for a peace conference where the Palestinians themselves are not fixing their home.” The outcome of the agreement would see Hamas come under the umbrella of the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Liberation Organization, and for the PLO to be “the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people,” said Wang Yi, according to Chinese state media.China has “a strong national interest in being at the grownups table for international diplomacy,” said Alterman.“China wants to be a part of whatever grand diplomatic jamboree ends this conflict and it would like to be a prominent part of that,” he added.

With traces of the poliovirus found in sewage samples in the Gaza Strip last week, the IDF began a campaign to give polio vaccinations or boosters to all soldiers serving there.No human cases have been reported so far, but there is a concern that the poliovirus might spread throughout the region.“It will be almost impossible to stop the ecological movement of the virus,” Dr. Lior Nesher, director of the Infectious Disease Institute at Soroka Medical Hospital in Beersheba, told The Times of Israel. “The disease does not respect borders.”“It is not an emergency now, but it does have the potential to affect people who are not immunized,” Nesher warned.Most of the soldiers are immunized, Nesher said. The danger, he said, lies elsewhere: When they return from Gaza, they could “carry the disease through mud, through their clothes, through their bowel movements.” Then, the disease could circulate through the country.Polio is a highly infectious disease, mostly affecting young children, that attacks the nervous system. It can lead to paralysis and in some cases death.What most concerns Nesher is that for the past few years, there has been a “reduction in vaccine compliance in the Israeli population that may cause a polio outbreak in Israel.”The virus is primarily spread through fecal-oral contamination, sometimes by drinking contaminated water, poor sanitation, or poor control of sewage.It can also spread through the underground aquifers, the subterranean areas under Israel which stores groundwater.In the summer, when it’s dry, those aquifers are not affected. But in a few months, when the rainy season begins and there is flooding, the poliovirus could leak into the Israeli water ecosystem, Nesher said.If the Israeli water systems become contaminated and there is a reduction in vaccine compliance in the population, then “there will be an outbreak of the virus that will primarily affect unvaccinated children or those who haven’t yet completed their vaccination program.”Herd immunity needs a herd-Approximately 95% of Israeli children receive the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) as part of their routine immunization schedule, according to the World Health Organization. The Israeli Health Ministry said that Israel has largely wiped out the disease through an aggressive inoculation campaign. But the disease is not completely eradicated.“Before the polio vaccine, so many people got polio and suffered from a debilitating illness and even died,” Nesher said. “It’s a safe vaccine. It’s been around for many, many years.”But “if enough people start to say, I’m not going to vaccinate my kid, I’m going to rely on someone else,” then, Nesher said, Israel “won’t have herd immunity against polio.”In the case of measles, if the percentage of vaccinated people dips below about 92-93%, then there is a breakout of the disease. There have been upticks in the last few years of both measles and pertussis because the percentage of vaccinated in Israel is below herd immunity levels.If polio drops, then “we might have an outbreak,” Nesher said.“I highly recommend that parents who have not vaccinated their children or are delaying their vaccinations should update and continue their vaccination,” he said.Potential for soldiers to receive a one-time booster-In Israel, the polio vaccination regimen involves four inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) shots given before the age of 18 months and another when the child is in second grade. Babies and toddlers are also given two oral polio vaccine (OPV) doses to provide full protection and prevent the shedding of the virus through the stool into the sewage system. It also prevents young children from infecting others.The polio vaccine is thought to give lifetime immunity, but in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults who are at increased risk of exposure receive a one-time booster dose of IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) to maintain immunity.The IDF does not have figures on how many soldiers are not vaccinated at all.“The IDF is now working in coordination with the Health Ministry to ensure the health of IDF soldiers and the public, and will continue to carry out inspections in the Gaza Strip,” a spokesperson said.IDF soldiers were also instructed to take preventive actions and maintain personal hygiene.The heat, accumulating garbage, sewage, and lack of clean water are accelerating the spread of diseases, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Rising cases of acute hepatitis and various forms of diarrhea have also been reported.The war started by Hamas’s October 7 massive attack on Israel has led to the destruction of large swaths of Gaza and the internal displacement of the vast majority of its population, resulting in what has been described as a humanitarian crisis for the Palestinians living in ruins and tent camps.These conditions have led to outbreaks of various diseases, which have also impacted the well-being of the IDF troops fighting there.Alongside the vaccination campaign for soldiers, the IDF is working with international organizations to bring more vaccines into the Strip for Gazans.In a statement, the Health Ministry added that Israeli health authorities were “monitoring and evaluating necessary steps to prevent the risk of disease in Israel.”

Officials from Israel, the United States and the United Arab Emirates reportedly held a secret meeting in Abu Dhabi last week to discuss plans for postwar Gaza, in an indication that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be budging from his refusal to seriously consider the issue until the offensive against Hamas ends.Two Israeli officials told the Axios news site that the Thursday discussions were hosted by UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and attended by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and US President Joe Biden’s Mideast envoy Brett McGurk.According to the report, two senior Israeli officials who had been involved in the formulation of plans for the Strip after the war were also in attendance.The postwar plan put forward by the UAE, the report said, is similar to a proposal put forward by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in January, which Netanyahu rejected at the time.The war in Gaza erupted with Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 251 hostages amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Vowing to destroy the terror group and free the hostages, Israel launched a wide-scale military operation in Gaza, initially making tactical advances against Hamas after powerful aerial strikes paved the way for ground troops.But those early gains have given way to a grinding struggle against an adaptable insurgency — and a growing feeling among some Israelis that their military faces only bad options, drawing comparisons with US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.The day before the American, Emirati and Israeli officials met, a senior UAE official signaled that Abu Dhabi was prepared to contribute troops to a postwar peacekeeping force in Gaza, making it the first Arab country to publicly buy into the effort being quietly advanced by the Biden administration.Lana Nusseibeh, who serves as special envoy of bin Zayed, penned an op-ed in the Financial Times in which she called for the establishment of a “temporary international mission” in Gaza “that responds to the humanitarian crisis, establishes law and order, lays the groundwork for governance and paves the way to reuniting Gaza and the occupied West Bank under a single, legitimate Palestinian Authority.”The UAE envoy specified in the article that the PA would have to conduct meaningful reforms, including appointing a new, independent prime minister, and then formally invite the international force to enter Gaza. Accordingly, Israel would need to allow the PA to govern in Gaza and take steps to move toward a two-state solution and the US would also have a leadership role in such an initiative, she added.According to the Axios report, the Emiratis have told the Biden administration the PA’s newly appointed prime minister, Mohammed Mustafa, is too closely connected to PA President Mahmoud Abbas to be able to lead the necessary reforms. Former PA prime minister Salam Fayyad, a critic of Abbas, has reportedly been put forward as a potential replacement.Washington has been looking to recruit countries for the effort, as it seeks to re-install the PA as the ruling authority in Gaza while recognizing that Ramallah needs time to reform and that a temporary security and governing force will be necessary to help fill the vacuum so that Hamas does not regain control.But the Biden administration has had a hard time convincing Arab allies to come on board, as a key condition of theirs has been that the temporary peacekeeping force be part of a process leading to an eventual two-state solution — a framework Netanyahu has vowed to block.Accordingly, Arab states have been reluctant to publicly express their willingness to take part in the initiative, not wanting to be seen as betraying the Palestinian people.US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held talks for months with a contact group of counterparts from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and the PA. The IDF announced Sunday that it had begun a campaign to offer polio vaccination boosters to all soldiers serving in the Gaza Strip.The move comes after traces of poliovirus type 2 were found in sewage samples in the Gaza Strip last week. No cases of polio have been detected so far in the Gaza Strip, according to the World Health Organization.The wide-scale vaccination campaign is for all forces in regular service as well as reserves and is not compulsory.“The IDF will work in coordination with the Health Ministry to ensure the health of IDF soldiers and the public, and will continue to carry out inspections in the Gaza Strip,” a spokesperson said.IDF soldiers were also instructed to take preventive actions and maintain personal hygiene.Alongside the vaccination campaign for soldiers, the IDF is working with international organizations to bring more vaccines into the Strip for Gazans.Polio is primarily spread through fecal-oral contamination, sometimes by drinking contaminated water, poor sanitation, or poor control of sewage.It is a highly infectious disease, mostly affecting young children, that attacks the nervous system. It can lead to paralysis and in some cases death.According to a statement by WHO, the war between Israel and Hamas has disrupted routine immunization programs in Gaza, and children are at increased risk for diseases such as polio.The heat, accumulating garbage, sewage and lack of clean water are accelerating the spread of diseases, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.In Israel, approximately 95% of all children receive polio vaccines, and the country has largely wiped out the disease, according to the Health Ministry.The polio vaccine is thought to give lifetime immunity, but in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults who are at increased risk of exposure receive a one-time booster dose of IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) to maintain immunity. The IDF does not have figures on how many soldiers are not vaccinated at all.The polio vaccination regimen involves four IPV shots given before the age of 18 months and another when the child is in second grade. Babies and toddlers are also given two oral polio vaccine (OPV) doses taken by drops into the mouth to provide full protection and prevent the shedding of the virus through the stool into the sewage system. It also prevents young children from infecting others.A Health Ministry spokesperson said the ministry conducts regular tests for polio in the sewage system in Israel.The ministry “continues to monitor the situation to prevent the risk of the spread of the illness in Israel,” the spokesperson said.

The Israeli Air Force on Sunday released footage showing its airstrikes a day earlier against the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida in western Yemen, which came following a deadly drone attack on Tel Aviv Thursday overnight carried out by the Iran-backed group.The video showed missiles launched by IAF fighter jets striking four large container cranes at the port used to unload shipments.The IAF also released footage showing fighter jets being refueled amid the operation, dubbed “Outstretched Arm,” as well as the arrival of some of the aircraft back at Israeli airbases following the strike.The strike, carried out by dozens of Israeli aircraft, targeted fuel depots and energy infrastructure at the port, in addition to the cranes.The Israeli strike group included F-15, F-16, and F-35 fighter jets, reconnaissance aircraft, and refueling planes — the latter of which was due to the target being some 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) from Israel, making it one of the farthest-ever actions carried out by the IAF.According to the military, the strike on the fuel depot was a major blow to the Houthi economy, and the cranes being taken out of service prevents the group from bringing in more Iranian weapons via the port that have been used to target Israel, along with commercial and military ships in the Red Sea.Saturday’s strike on Hodeida Port used more force than the IAF needed, aimed at sending a message of deterrence as well as causing financial damage to the Iran-backed group and impeding its ability to import weapons.Strikes carried out by an American-led coalition in Yemen have only targeted Houthi military infrastructure, and not sites that are also used by civilians, such as the Hodeida Port, which is also used to bring in humanitarian aid to the war-torn country in addition to the Iranian weapon shipments.The IAF believed that the strike would project a message to Israel’s enemies, especially Lebanon’s Hezbollah, that Israel is capable and willing to target dual-use civilian-military infrastructure, and carry out what could be considered disproportionate responses to attacks.Anticipating a response-Meanwhile, the IAF was on high alert for reprisals in response to the airstrike. The IAF has assessed that not only the Houthis would ramp up attacks following the strike in Yemen but other Iran-backed groups in the region as well, including those in Syria and Iraq, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.Following Friday’s Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv, which killed resident Yevgeny Ferder, 50, the IAF assessed that the Iran-backed group in Yemen would continue to carry out attacks on Israel regardless of an Israeli response.According to the Israeli military, Yemen’s Houthis have in the past nine months fired over 220 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones at Israel, the latest on Sunday morning — mostly toward the southernmost city of Eilat — in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, where Israel is battling Hamas terrorists.The vast majority of the Iran-backed group’s projectiles have been intercepted by US forces stationed in the Red Sea and Israeli air defenses and fighter jets, or have missed their target. Before the attack on Tel Aviv early on Friday, only one Houthi projectile, a cruise missile, had successfully struck Israel, hitting an open area near Eilat in March.Until Friday’s deadly attack in Tel Aviv, Israel chose not to respond to those attacks, preferring that a United States-led coalition continue to strike the Houthis, mostly in response to the Iran-backed group’s attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea.The military said Sunday there was no change to instructions for Israeli civilians, although it was anticipating a response by the Houthis.Israel’s air defenses are not “hermetic,” military officials said, warning that there would likely be more successful drone attacks on the country, but adding that the IAF is doing everything to prevent them.The IAF also said it was unfazed by the fact that social media clips had shown the Israeli fighter jets, refueler tankers, and spy planes as they headed toward Yemen in the afternoon hours of Saturday — which may have given the Houthis an early warning that an attack was coming.IAF officials viewed the social media footage, as well as the fact that the strike was carried out in broad daylight, as a form of deterrence against Israel’s enemies.Israel acted alone in the strike with no American military involvement.An Israeli military official said US Central Command had been updated ahead of the attack, and in turn updated its allies in the region.Houthi drone flew 2,600 kilometers to reach Tel Aviv-The Iranian-made drone launched by the Houthis at Tel Aviv early Friday morning traveled more than 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) to reach Israel, according to an Israeli Air Force probe.The modified Iranian-made Samad-3 took a non-direct flight path. This may have contributed to it not being classified as a threat by air defense troops, which resulted in it not being intercepted and striking a residential building in Tel Aviv.According to the IAF investigation, the explosive-laden drone apparently flew west from Yemen over the Red Sea, reaching Eritrea, before then flying north over Sudan and Egypt and reaching the Mediterranean Sea. The drone then turned to approach Tel Aviv from the west.It was only at this point that the drone showed up on Israeli radar, as an unidentified target. The army can now say the drone was tracked for six minutes while it approached Tel Aviv from the direction of the sea, before dropping in and out of radar for several minutes after that, according to the probe.The drone, according to the probe, was in the air for some 16 hours, flying at a speed of between 80 and 100 knots, or 148-185 kilometers per hour.The IAF was aware of such capabilities in the hands of the Houthis, but had no specific prior information on the attack itself.More radar operators after failure to recognize threat-The probe found that if the target had been classified as a suspected drone when it was first identified, the IAF would have had enough time to engage it, using fighter jets or ground or sea-based air defense systems. Instead, the target was not classified as a threat due to a human error by the air defense soldiers, and it impacted Tel Aviv.Human operators who analyze the IAF’s radar were at the time focused on tracking a drone launched by another Iran-backed group, from Iraq. That drone was shot down by fighter jets. The IAF has explained that the operators also frequently see targets drop in and out of radar, which in some cases are birds or distortions caused by clouds. Additionally, the IAF’s focus had been on targets approaching Israel from the north, east, and south, and less so from the west.Following the attack, the IAF doubled the number of operators analyzing radar systems so that targets are not missed and are correctly classified. It has also increased aerial patrols, especially in the Mediterranean, to better detect incoming threats.Fighter jets face threat in an all-out war with Hezbollah-Separately, assessments described to The Times of Israel on Sunday showed that in the event of an all-out war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Israeli Air Force would need to take risks to combat Hezbollah’s air defenses.The IAF has assessed that some fighter jets may be shot down, and risks will need to be taken to obtain aerial superiority during the first days of a major conflict.So far, amid ongoing skirmishes along the border, Hezbollah has shot down at least five Israeli drones, and in one case, fired missiles at Israeli jets without success.The IAF has knowledge of the Iranian-made anti-aircraft systems that Hezbollah possesses, and has repeatedly made efforts to target them amid the ongoing fighting.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.Other Iran-backed groups, in Iraq and Syria, have also claimed to have launched dozens of drones and cruise missiles at Israel during the ongoing war sparked by Hamas’s devastating October 7 terror onslaught.Iran itself also carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel in April with hundreds of drones and missiles, almost all of which were intercepted.The Israeli military has detailed plans ready for the event of an escalation with Hezbollah, although Israel’s political leadership has not yet made a decision on launching a major offensive in Lebanon. Regardless, the IAF has said it maintains readiness in the event of a sudden escalation as a result of Hezbollah’s actions.

Archaeologists have solved a 150-year-old mystery in the City of David, discovering a massive moat that was used to fortify and protect the Temple Mount and the king’s palace in biblical-era Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority and Tel Aviv University announced on Sunday.The city’s northern fortification eluded archaeologists for a century and a half as they could not trace its full route. But recent excavations of the Givati Parking Lot, adjacent to the Old City walls, have revealed a moat that split the City of David in half, separating the palace and Temple Mount from the rest of the city.The vast moat, which was at least nine meters deep and 30 meters wide, the IAA said in a press release, was “one of the monumental fortifications that protected the kings of Jerusalem.”“It is not known when the moat was originally cut, but evidence suggests it was used during the centuries when Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah, almost 3,000 years ago, beginning with King Josiah,” said excavation directors Prof. Yuval Gadot and Dr. Yiftah Shalev. “During those years, the moat separated the southern residential part of the city from the ruling Acropolis in the north — the upper city where the palace and the temple were located.”According to the researchers, the fortification altered the natural topography of Jerusalem and required significant engineering skills and resources.  “The creation of the moat was a large-scale, monumental operation, designed to change and modify the natural topography to demonstrate the power of Jerusalem’s rulers to those who entered its gates,” the IAA said in the press release. “Following the dramatic discovery, we reexamined the past excavations reports written by the British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon, who excavated in the City of David in the 1960s, in an area located slightly east of today’s Givati Parking Lot,” said Gadot.“It became clear to us that Kenyon noticed that the natural rock slopes towards the north, in a place where it should naturally have risen. She thought it was a natural valley, but now it turns out that she had uncovered the continuation of the moat, carved to the west. The connection of the two uncovered sections creates a deep and wide moat that extends across at least 70 meters, from west to east.”He added that the discovery corresponds to references in the Bible to the topography of the area. In one such reference in the first Book of Kings (11:27), King Solomon is described as building the construction, which was dubbed the “Millo.”: “… Solomon built up the ‘Millo’ and closed up the breach in the wall of the City of David his father.”The results of the excavation are set to be presented at the City of David’s Jerusalem Studies Experience conference in August.IAA director Eli Escusido said that “the excavations in the City of David never cease to amaze.”“Once again, discoveries are being revealed that shed new and vivid light on the biblical literature. When you stand at the bottom of this giant excavation, surrounded by enormous hewn walls, it is impossible not to be filled with wonder and appreciation for those ancient people who, about 3,800 years ago, literally moved mountains and hills,” he said.
