From Moses to the Second Temple: Only Nine Red Heifers

The Mishna teaches that up until the destruction of the Second Temple, ashes had been prepared from a total of only nine red heifers. The very first red heifer was processed by Moses himself - as the verse states, "... have them bring you a red heifer." The second was done by the prophet Ezra in the days of the First Temple, and during the entire era of the Second Temple only seven more heifers were used for ashes. This was enough to provide for the nation's needs for purification throughout all those years.The names of all the High Priests who prepared those seven heifers during Second Temple times are recorded by the Mishna: Simon the Just and Yochanan each made two; El'yhoeini ben Hakof, Chanamel HaMitzri and Yishmael ben Pi'avi processed one heifer each. Thus, from the time that Moses received the commandment of the red heifer from the Holy One, blessed be He, until the destruction of the Second Temple, purifying ashes had been produced by the hands of these great leaders from a total of nine red heifers.

The Tenth Red Heifer Will be Prepared by the Messiah

In recounting this historical record in his commentary to the Mishna, the great Maimonides ends with the enigmatic statement: "... and the tenth red heifer will be accomplished by the king, the Messiah; may he be revealed speedily, Amen, May it be God's will."With this amazing statement, Maimonides recounts an ancient tradition - that the tenth red heifer is associated with the Messianic era. Does this perhaps mean that the appearance of a red heifer in these waning end times is an indication, a forerunner of the appearance of the Messiah himself, who will officiate at its preparation? If there has been no red heifer for the past 2,000 years, perhaps it is because the time was not right; Israel was far from being ready. But now... what could it mean for the times we live in, to have the means for purification so close at hand? With the words of Maimonides in mind, we cannot help but wonder and pray: If there are now red heifers... is ours the era that will need them?

On this note, it is fitting that we pay particular attention to a Midrashic teaching:

Each day in the Holy Temple, the Levites sang a special daily song. The order of the daily songs have a deep significance, and there is a mystical connection which each song had for the particular day it was sung. The Oral Tradition has preserved the listing of the Levitical songs that were sung each day in the Holy Temple, and various commentators and sages have explained some of the connections which can be seen between these songs and the days of the week..According to tradition, the Second Temple, like the First, was destroyed at the conclusion of Shabbat - on a Saturday night. Both Josephus and the Midrashic writings describe how even though the flames of destruction raged all around, and the blood of the slain flowed through the Temple, the priests nevertheless continued to serve atop the altar, and the levites did not cease to sing, right up until the very end.Yet despite the fact that the actual destruction of the Holy Temple took place on a Saturday night, the Midrash records that at those moments the Levites sang the song for Wednesday - "O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth!" Why did they not sing the song for that day of the week, which was Saturday? Perhaps the levites were addressing their song to the destruction itself, and consoling Israel by reminding her that God has sworn vengeance against His enemies. In this context perhaps their song was even meant to "remind" God to keep His word, and to "shine forth" at the proper time, to manifest Himself in the garb of Divine vengeance.But we know that there is a close relationship between each day of the week and its respective song. We have seen something of the great insight and understanding which the sages of Israel possess. It is possible that in our own generation, we can shed new light on this perplexing question... based on our own contemporary knowledge, and the wisdom and experience that we have acquired from hindsight in our own times. For although the sages of yore were great and inspired, we in our own generation, are privy to new understanding to which those great men had no access; in short, we have new evidence.For on that fateful evening of destruction, it is true that the priests and levites consoled each other and all of Israel with the knowledge that God will avenge His honor; perhaps their song summarized the entire epoch. It is certainly possible that they chose to remind the Holy One of his own vow, as well.But while all of these explanations are acceptable, it is also quite possible that as the Levites stood atop the platform in that place of sublime inspiration and holiness for the last time, all of a moment they received the most profound flash of prophetic revelation...And they prophesied, they saw with perfect clarity of vision, that although the terrible destruction now loomed all around them on this Saturday evening, the continuation of their service would most certainly come about as well. The day would come when the Holy Temple would be rebuilt. Though it may be far off in the distance, it would certainly transpire, for it is a Divine promise...At that moment they could see that it would truly come to be. The rebuilding would happen, even if it happens very slowly, and in stages, one step at a time. For like the morning dawn, "such is the way of Israel's redemption. In the beginning, it progresses very slowly... but as it continues, it grows brighter and brighter."So too, the Levites perceived that the long process of Israel's redemption, hinging on the rebuilding of the Holy Temple, would begin again on a Wednesday... thus they sang the song of Wednesday, for they sang not of destruction, or revenge, but of promise continuation, renewal and rebirth:The Levites saw that Jerusalem and the Temple Mount would stand desolate for nearly two milenia... but they would be regathered by Israel once again on a Wednesday: Wednesday, June 7th, 1967 was the day they saw. This day could be considered the first step towards the rebuilding of the Holy Temple. For this day marked a turning point in Jewish history, and began a new era, which progresses in our own time, and moves towards the great destiny of the Jewish people, to be a light to the nations and a people who walk with God in their midst.

IN A RESTORATION MINISTRY

Over the past several years JoAnn and I have enjoyed watching God do a phenomenal work. However, we could say little about it until now, a time when you have an opportunity to get involved. The red heifer of Numbers 19 has brought together a group of Christian ministers and Israeli rabbis that love God. This has been done without division, without arguments and with great love and respect between them. Now you can join them in a history making biblical project.It all started on September 18, 1990 when Reverend Clyde Lott of Canton, Mississippi mailed his first letter to Israel. God had prompted him and he was trying to find out about the red heifer spoken of in Numbers 19. He wondered where these cattle came from and exactly what they looked like. This brought Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute into the picture. During 1991 and 1992 these men were laying groundwork for what is now the red cattle program for Israel.In 1994 Clyde phoned and invited JoAnn and me to come and meet Rabbi Richman, a man many U.S. citizens now know because of his visit to their churches. On November 10, 1994, this orthodox rabbi laid his hands on Clyde's perfect red heifers. This was the first time in over two thousand years a rabbi had touched such a cow. It was a historical event. Now, a new, non-profit corporation, Canaan Land Restoration of Israel, Inc., with Clyde Lott as president will ship plane loads of red cattle to Israel, 140 heifers per load. The first shipment is scheduled for August 1998. Because of this many Christian people are going to be blessed, blessed by giving red heifers to this restoration program.God said to Abram (Abraham), I will bless those that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed (Gen. 12:3). We know that Jesus, by His mother's lineage, was an offspring of Abraham. Therefore, the promised blessing is still in force. This is why Christians can bless the offspring of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and in turn be blessed by God.Today, we see many examples of Christian love for Am Yisrael (the people of Israel) and Yertz Yisrael (the land of Israel). It is their desire for Jewish people to turn to God. Now there is a way for you to help bring this about. It is through Canaan Land Restoration of Israel, Inc./Emmet Bet Sheroot, a Georgia corporation established by several ministers. In addition to Clyde there is the corporation's vice president, Rev. Guy Garner, Jr. of Georgia, the Secretary-Treasurer, Rev. Alfred Bishop of Tennessee and directors Rabbi Chaim Richman of Jerusalem. (Others will be added.) All the ministers in this work are well respected men of God, but the focus is on Clyde Lott and Chaim Richman. Clyde is a licensed minister, a graduate of Mississippi State University where he majored in animal science. He is a prominent cattleman working cattle shows throughout the U.S. Chaim Richman is an Israeli, but he was born, raised and educated in the Unites States. He is highly respected among the orthodox rabbis. This helps him as he works with Israeli attorneys, government officials, etc. getting ready to receive the red cattle as fast as they can be shipped. Obviously the cattle farms, grain farms and grassland will occupy a large amount of acreage while restoring the land. (Israel now imports about 80% of it's beef, so shortly the farm should be self-sustaining.)

Clyde will soon be in Israel maintaining the farms. Because he is a minister, ministry will be a part of his Israeli work. This will be done through Emmet Bet Sheroot (Faithful House of Service). In Israel, Emmet Bet Sheroot will foster New Testament Bible schools while rabbis continue to teach the Torah, Nevi'im and Kethuvim (Old Testament).Back to the red heifers and you. Clyde has been working with cattlemen in other states, preparing a herd of red cattle for shipment. These cattlemen must be paid for their efforts as the heifers are moved to Israel. The cost of each cow is $1,000, a conservative price for blue ribbon cattle. Rome-We must implement actions and behaviors of peace with opponents, in order to stop the hatred between men. To overcome the conflicts requires «the effort to make reach an agreement» with the enemy: «That way we will stop fighting among ourselves». Pope Francis said this during the mass this morning at Casa Santa Marta, as reported by Vatican Radio. «One takes a step, the other takes another step and at least there is peace: a very temporary peace, but the peace of agreement», he explained.The words of the Pope, based on the comments of today's Gospel on brotherly love, take on a special meaning after his initiative for peace in the Middle East, which saw him last Sunday praying in the Vatican Gardens along with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas).Jesus he said in his homily, teaches three criteria to overcome the conflict between us: realism, consistency, filiation. And he says that we must love our neighbor, but do not like the Pharisees who were inconsistent and «their ideas were multifaceted - because they were ideologists». Their attitude, noted the Pope Bergoglio, «was not love» but «indifference towards others.The first criteria is that of a «healthy realism». «If you have something against another person that you cannot fix, look for a solution, but first at least come to an agreement ; come to an agreement with your opponent while you're on the road. It will not be ideal, but an agreement is a good thing. It is realistic», he said.The effort of coming to an agreement», he added, although there are those who believe that it is «something too vulgar». In fact, to save many things «one must come to an agreement. And one takes a step, the other takes another step and at least there is peace: a very temporary peace, but the peace of agreement». Jesus, said Francis, «also says this, the ability to make agreements between us and exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees, the teachers of the law, of these people». And here Pope Francis warns that «to gossip about another is to kill, because at the root is the same hatred», « you kill» in «a different way: with gossip, with slander and with defamation». And Christ warns: «He who calls his brother stupid, is killing him, because there is the root of hatred»: «And today we think that not killing a brother means not murdering him, but no, not killing him means not insulting him. Insults come from the same root as crime; it is the same hatred. If you do not hate and you do not kill your enemy or your brother then don’t insult him either. But insults are a very common habit among us. There are people who express their hatred against another person has an ability to flourish insults, awesome, very much so! And that hurts. To scream. Insult ... No, let's be realistic. The criteria of realism. The criteria of consistency. Don’t kill, don’t insult.The third criteria that gives Jesus gives us, said the Pope, «is the criterion of affiliation». «If you, if we must not kill our brother - he said – it is because he is our brother, that is, we have the same Father. I cannot go to the Father if I am not in peace with my brother. «Do not speak with the Father if you are not at peace with your brother - was the Pope’s exhortation – or at least in agreement.Do not talk with the Father without being at peace with your brother. Three criteria - summed up in conclusion - a criteria of realism, a criteria of consistency, that is, do not kill but do not insult either, because those who insult kill, murder; and a criteria of affiliation: you cannot speak with the Father if you cannot speak with your brother. This means overcoming justice, that of the scribes and Pharisees. This program is not easy, right? But it is the road that Jesus shows us for moving forward.

Four events are expected to snarl traffic in some parts the city during the weekend.Church St. from Wood to Gloucester Sts. will be closed until Monday for World Pride festivities. Wellesley St., however, will remain open throughout the weekend.Meanwhile, music lovers still have a chance to see their bands as North by Northeast, an annual music festival, wraps up on Sunday. Yonge St. from Dundas and Queen Sts. will be closed until Sunday at midnight. Shoppers will still be able to park their vehicle at the Toronto Eaton Centre by passing through the Shuter St. intersection.Port Union Rd. south of Lawrence Ave. from Shoalhaven Dr. to Bridgend St. will be closed in both directions Saturday for the Port Union Village Waterfront Festival.A run for cancer is also scheduled this weekend. Record-high gasoline prices across Canada aren't expected to dip until summer weather and sectarian clashes in Iraq cool off, energy analysts and gas-price watchers say.That could mean more grumbling at the pump for cottage-bound motorists until at least September, when the holiday road-trip season winds down.Average prices per litre reached records in parts of Ontario last week. On Friday, prices in Toronto were nearing $1.42 (14 cents higher than the same day last year), and in Edmonton it was close to $1.26 (six cents higher). In Halifax, gasoline was selling at about $1.40 a litre (up 11 cents) and the Vancouver average was hovering around $1.55 a litre (up 12 cents)."[Thursday] was a record here and the day before tied for the record. Tomorrow will be a record," said Toronto-based Dan McTeague, who runs the gas-price forecasting website Tomorrow's Gas Price Today."We've been in record territory now for several days."The previous all-time high for Toronto was in 2008, which was around $1.37 a litre.McTeague blamed jitters and excessive financial speculation over instability in the Middle East for “distorting” fuel prices.Meanwhile, he noted, actual supply for crude has never been better.Toronto resident Frank Evans, anticipating steeper prices to come, was seen stockpiling fuel for his 12-metre boat at an east-end gas station.Laura Lau, a senior vice-president portfolio manager with the Brompton Group specializing in natural resources, said the markups are a direct reflection of international headlines.The risk premium for oil has soared, even though the unrest hasn't stopped crude from flowing."We could see some relief, but it depends on what happens in Iraq," Lau said. In Iqaluit on Friday, only one of the three stations in town was displaying a price for gas, showing $1.37 per litre. Iraq militants take Syria-border post in drive for caliphate

ANBAR, IRAQ(Reuters) - Sunni fighters seized a border post on the Iraq-Syria frontier, security sources said on Saturday, smashing a line drawn by colonial powers almost a century ago with the aim of creating an Islamic Caliphate stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran.The militants, led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), first moved into the nearby town of al-Qaim on Friday, pushing out security forces, the sources said.Once border guards heard that al-Qaim had fallen, they left their posts and militants moved in, the sources said.Sameer al-Shwiali, media adviser to the commander of Iraq's anti-terrorist squad, told Reuters that the Iraqi army was still in control of al-Qaim.Al-Qaim and its neighbouring Syrian counterpart Albukamal are on a strategic supply route. A three-year civil war in Syria has left most of eastern Syria in the hands of Sunni militants, including the Albukamal-Qaim crossing.The Albukamal gate is run by al Qaeda's official Syria branch, the Nusra Front, which has clashed with ISIL but has also agreed to localised truces when it suits both sides.The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, Rami Abdulrahman, said ISIL has pushed the Nusra Front out from many areas of eastern Syria in the past few days and their capture of al-Qaim will allow them to quickly move to the Syrian side.ISIL already controls territory around the Abukamal gate, effectively pinching the Nusra Front between its forces in Syria and those in neighbouring Iraq, said Abdulrahman, who tracks the violence.The al Qaeda off-shoot has captured swathes of territory in northwest and central Iraq, including the second city, Mosul. Shi'ite Iran has said it will not hesitate to protect Shi'ite shrines if asked by Baghdad but Sunni-run Saudi Arabia has warned Tehran to stay out of Iraq.U.S. President Barack Obama has offered up to 300 U.S. special forces advisers to help the Iraqi government recapture territory seized by ISIL and other Sunni armed groups across northern and western Iraq.But he has held off granting a request for air strikes to protect the government and renewed a call for Iraq's long-serving Shi'ite prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, to do more to overcome sectarian divisions that have fuelled resentment among the Sunni minority.

SHI'ITES MOBILISE

The fighting has divided Iraq along sectarian lines. The Kurds have expanded their zone in the northeast to include the oil city of Kirkuk, which they regard as part of Kurdistan, while Sunnis have taken ground in the west.The government has mobilised Shi'ite militia to send volunteers to the front lines.In Baghdad's Shi'ite slum of Sadr City, thousands of fighters wearing military fatigues marched through the streets.They carried rocket-propelled grenades, semi-automatic rifles and trucks had mounted long-range rockets, including the new 3-metre “Muqtada 1” missile, named after Shi'ite cleric Muqtada Sadr, who has tens of thousands of followers.Sadr has yet to throw his fighters into the recent wave of fighting but has criticised Maliki for mishandling the crisis."These brigades are sending a message of peace. They are the brigades of peace. They are ready to sacrifice their souls and blood for the sake of defending Iraq and its generous people," a man on a podium said as the troops marched by.

SUNNI INFIGHTING

The fighting, with strong sectarian overtones, is pushing the country towards civil war.Iraq's largest refinery, Baiji, 200 km (130 miles) north of the capital near Tikrit, has been transformed into a battlefield."Last night, three attacks on Baiji refinery were repelled and attackers ... More than 70 terrorists were killed and more than 15 vehicles were destroyed,” said Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman for the Iraqi military's commander-in-chief.He showed aerial footage of cars and people being blown up but details of the fighting could not be independently confirmed.As in Syria, ISIL has started to clash with other Sunni militias in Iraq. In the town of Hawija, ISIL and members of the Naqshbandi Army, made up of former army officers as well as loyalists to Saddam Hussein's Baath party, started fighting on Friday evening, witnesses said.They said the clashes, a power dispute, killed 15 people."Hawija is falling apart," said a senior tribal figure from the community, just days before the clashes. "There are so many groups working with ISIL. Each group has its agenda."In many ways, Hawija was the spark for Iraqi's current armed Sunni insurgency. In April 2013, Sunni protesters said security forces shot at least 50 of them. They were demanding greater rights from the Shi'ite-led government. Rebel attacks on Ukraine forces put ceasefire under pressure

KIEV/DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists attacked Ukrainian posts on the border with Russia and a military base and tried to storm an airforce base overnight into Saturday, government forces said, putting a Ukrainian unilateral ceasefire under pressure.The action came just hours after the start of a ceasefire at 10 p.m. on Friday by Ukrainian forces, ordered by President Petro Poroshenko as part of his plan to end the rebel insurgency in the east of the country.A government forces spokesman said the separatists used mortars and sniper fire to attack Ukrainian posts at Izvareno and Uspenka on the border, wounding nine Ukrainian officers.Rebels with big calibre machine guns and grenade-launchers also attacked a Ukrainian position at Avdiyivka, near the main regional town of Donetsk, and a Ukrainian post at Kreminna.Separatists controlling Slaviansk also attacked Ukrainian forces on Karachun hill overlooking the town with mortars and grenade-launchers, the spokesman, Vladyslav Seleznyov, said."In all these episodes, the attacks of the (rebel) fighters were deflected" without loss, Seleznyov said.Poroshenko announced the week-long ceasefire on Friday night, urging the rebels to lay down their arms and warning that Ukrainian forces would hit back if attacked.Ukrainian forces also repelled two attacks by around 50 heavily-armed fighters in the early morning on an air defence base at Avdiyivka, which houses surface-to-air missiles, the defence ministry said. No Ukrainian personnel were hurt.The rebels, who have seized strategic points in major towns including Donetsk and set up "people's republics", saying they want to join Russia, said Ukraine has broken its own ceasefire.

PEACE PLAN

Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic told a news conference the ceasefire was not working and appealed to Russia to send in peacekeeping forces."Since last evening, combat activities are continuing. Poroshenko's artillery is bombing Slaviansk and the air force has made several raids. Words about a ceasefire as always were just that - words," Borodai said."The anti-terrorist operation against the people of the Donbass is in full swing," he said.Pavel Gubarev, a prominent rebel leader, told Rossiya-24 TV channel that either Ukrainian troops were not obeying orders or Poroshenko "is lying", adding: "There is no ceasefire at all,"Poroshenko, installed on June 7 as president after seven months of turmoil in the ex-Soviet republic, ordered government forces to cease firing to allow his 15-point peace plan to take root. The ceasefire ends at 10 p.m. on June 27.The insurgency in the Russian-speaking east erupted in April after street protests in the capital Kiev toppled the Moscow-backed Viktor Yanukovich. Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.Poroshenko is gearing up for a diplomatic push to sell his plan but his biggest challenge will be to win over Russian President Vladimir Putin. Egypt upholds death sentence on Brotherhood leader, nearly 200 supporters

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court confirmed death sentences on Saturday against the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and 182 supporters, in a mass trial of Islamists who ruled Egypt for a year but face a fierce crackdown under the new president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.Mohamed Badie and other defendants were charged in connection with violence that erupted in the southern town of Minya following the ousting of the Brotherhood's President Mohamed Mursi last July, led by then army chief Sisi.One police officer was killed in the violence.The court's decision came two months after it referred the case against Badie, general guide of the now outlawed Brotherhood, and 682 other defendants to a top religious authority, the first step to imposing a death penalty.Those preliminary sentences triggered outrage among Western governments and rights groups, with the United States and European Union both saying they were appalled by the rulings.Since Mursi's overthrow, which was followed by protests by his supporters, hundreds of Islamist protesters have been killed and thousands jailed in a crackdown by security forces. Five hundred army and police officers have also been killed.Sisi, who won a presidential election last month, said in the run-up to the vote that the Brotherhood - Egypt's oldest, most organized and successful political group - was finished and would not exist under his rule.Amnesty International described the verdicts as "the latest example of the Egyptian judiciary’s bid to crush dissent".There was no immediate reaction on the ruling from the Brotherhood, whose members are either in jail or on the run.Outside the Minya court compound, around 200 people, mostly relatives of defendants that were freed, gathered to celebrate the ruling. "Long live justice, long live Sisi," they chanted.Out of a total 683 defendants, around 100 are in detention and the rest were tried in absentia. Four were jailed for life while 496 were acquitted, according to judiciary sources. All verdicts can be appealed before a higher court."Those rulings are a continued farce," prominent Egyptian human rights activist and lawyer Gamal Eid said on Saturday."And the state is still insisting that the judiciary is independent. I don't know how we can believe that when we see rulings like that. It is against logic and common sense. It is a joke," he said.

U.S. AID

The United States has said it would be unconscionable for Egypt to carry out mass death sentences against the Brotherhood and that Cairo's actions would have consequences for resumption of suspended U.S. aid.The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is due to tour the Middle East this week, is expected to pay a brief visit to Egypt on Sunday, according to local Egyptian media reports.Egypt, the biggest Arab state, which controls the strategic Suez Canal, has been among the largest recipients of U.S. military and economic aid since its 1979 peace treaty with U.S. ally Israel.Some of that support was put on hold after Mursi's overthrow, the latest round in a decades-old struggle between Egyptian authorities and the Islamist movement.The 70-year-old Badie was first jailed under President Gamal Abdel Nasser nearly 50 years ago, alongside the Brotherhood's then leader and ideologue Sayyid Qutb who was executed in 1966.Qutb's revolutionary writings in jail are believed to have inspired generations of Islamist militants including Ayman al-Zawahri, the Egyptian doctor who succeeded Osama bin Laden as al Qaeda leader, although the Brotherhood itself has renounced violence decades ago.The same court that sentenced Badie on Saturday has already confirmed death sentences on 37 Brotherhood supporters in rulings that were part of a final judgment on 528 Muslim Brotherhood supporters who received initial death sentences.In a separate case, a Cairo court referred Badie and 13 Brotherhood supporters on Thursday to the Mufti, a top religious authority, on charges of murder and firearms possession related to clashes during the protests last July.Badie and other senior Brotherhood leaders including Mursi are standing trial in other cases.Sisi held a brief meeting at Cairo airport late on Friday with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah whose country, like Egypt, has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, viewing its Islamist doctrines as a threat to Saudi dynastic rule.The Egyptian state had in November issued a law that banned protests without police permission. Israel steps up West Bank search for missing teens

RAMALLAH West Bank (Reuters) - Israel sent more troops to the occupied West Bank on Saturday to search for three missing teenagers it says were abducted by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.The military said it arrested 10 Palestinians on Saturday and that some 1,350 sites in the West Bank had been searched so far and more than 330 Palestinians detained.The raids have triggered street clashes in the West Bank in which two Palestinians have been killed.Hamas, which refuses to recognise Israel's existence, has neither claimed nor denied responsibility for the disappearance of the youths, who went missing near an Israeli settlement on June 13.Hundreds of troops were deployed around the city of Hebron on Saturday, a day after the army declared the area a closed military zone, and appeared to be carrying out searches, a Reuters witness said.Overnight in Ramallah, troops raided the offices of a media broadcast and production company, witnesses said.An Israeli military spokeswoman said the soldiers found "electronic devices and magnetic media used for terrorism" that she said belonged to Hamas, without going into further detail.Israel has also hit welfare organisations it accuses of aiding Hamas. Soldiers raided 30 such institutions on Thursday and 15 more on Saturday, a military spokesman said.Campaign group The Palestinian Prisoners Club said the army had arrested 37 people on Saturday.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the kidnapping of Gil-Ad Shaer and U.S.-Israeli national Naftali Fraenkel, both aged 16, and Eyal Yifrah, 19.But the Western-backed leader has also criticised the extent of Israel's recent raids, saying they amount to collective punishment.The crisis has put pressure on a unity pact between Abbas's Fatah party and Hamas. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki told Reuters on Friday the deal would be threatened if Hamas was responsible for abducting the three youths.Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said on his Facebook page al-Malki's comments were "irresponsible".Hamas controls the Gaza Strip, an area that, along with East Jerusalem and the West Bank, Palestinians want for a future state. European left-wingers back Juncker for EU Commission

PARIS (Reuters) - Left-wing European leaders agreed on Saturday to back Luxembourg conservative Jean-Claude Juncker for the post of European Commission president, saying they would seek other top EU jobs for their party allies in return.Among those posts was the European Parliament presidency, whose incumbent Martin Schulz, a German Social Democrat, won their backing to seek a new term at the head of the EU assembly.The decision to back Juncker at a meeting in Paris of eight prime ministers, including Italy's Matteo Renzi and German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, makes Britain's David Cameron look increasingly isolated before next week's EU summit.Cameron considers the former Luxembourg premier and veteran EU deal-broker too ardent a proponent of European integration. He had been seeking allies - notably Renzi - to help block his nomination after Juncker's political grouping, the European People's Party, won last month's European Parliament election.But French President Francois Hollande said those present at the meeting had agreed to respect the principle that the leading candidate of whichever party won the election should have the right to put forward that person for the top Commission job."And that happens to be Mr Juncker. But we want a discussion at the summit on the whole set of European responsibilities," Hollande told reporters, adding that some of those roles should be given to Social Democrat-backed candidates.Germany's Gabriel confirmed that Schulz, who led the campaign of Europe's left-wing parties in the elections, would instead be put forward for a new term as parliament chief."Martin Schulz would have been the ideal Commission president, but elections are elections ... and that's why Juncker will become Commission president," he said.Schulz, standing next to Gabriel, told reporters he would formally present his candidature for the parliament post and was "quite optimistic" that a deal on the EU's top positions would be agreed at the summit in Brussels.

NO RULE CHANGES

EU diplomats said this week Juncker was the only name on the table to run the EU's powerful executive arm and looked increasingly likely to be nominated at a June 26-27 leaders' summit.Present at the meeting were the government leaders of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.Renzi, whose country will take over the rotating presidency of the 28-member EU next month, left the Paris meeting without speaking to reporters.Gabriel and Hollande said there had been broad agreement that the rules of Europe's so-called Stability and Growth Pact putting limits on public deficits should not be altered, but that it should be implemented flexibly to support growth.The debate over the pact was reopened last week when Gabriel, leader of Angela Merkel's Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners, suggested during a visit to France that countries that carry out structural reforms should get more time to meet fiscal goals.Merkel swiftly reacted by saying she and Gabriel both agreed there was no need to change the pact as it already offers all the flexibility it needs."The positions I put forward in Germany and France in recent weeks were backed by everyone here, namely: no change to the EU stability and growth pact but we should ensure ... it is used for growth and jobs," Gabriel said.Manfred Weber, head of the European People's Party (EPP) warned Gabriel not to go too far in the debate about softening the Stability and Growth Pact, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung said in an advance copy of an article due to be published on Sunday.Weber said his faction would not accept a softening of the stability criteria and made working with the Socialists in the European Parliament dependent on this. He was quoted as saying while they wanted to work together, this was, however, "not thinkable if the Euro is to be softened.
