Israel capable of setting back Iran’s nuclear program, ex-air force chief indicates

‘Don’t underestimate the capacity of the Israeli Air Force to fulfill its missions,’ says Ido Nehushtan, calling for carrot-and-stick approach on Iran

Sanctions alone are not sufficient to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear program, former Israeli Air Force commander Ido Nehushtan said on Saturday morning, and he indicated that the Israel Air Force was capable of setting back the Iranian nuclear program if ordered to do so.Advocating a carrot-and-stick approach, Nehushtan said the option of a military strike on Iran, which claims its nuclear program is peaceful but has refused to honor international resolutions aimed to prevent it attaining nuclear weapons capability, must remain on the table.“Nobody’s happy about the idea of a military strike. It is carried out when the alternative is worse. There’s no knowing what’ll happen as a result of a military strike,” he said.Nehushtan stressed Tehran must realize that Israel is prepared to use the military option “as a means to an end.”
He was adamant that Israel did retain the capability to realize a viable military option. “It is possible to delay the Iranian nuclear program by hitting its facilities,” he said. “I wouldn’t underestimate the capacity of the Israeli Air Force to fulfill the missions it is ordered to carry out. And I think I’ve said enough.”Still, in the event that Iran did get to the bomb, Nehushtan said he believed not all would be lost.“If we’ve reached a point where Iran has nuclear weapons and we’re too late, that doesn’t mean it’ll stay that way forever. We’re not there yet,” he said at a cultural event in Beersheba.He also said Israel’s ties with Egypt were of utmost importance, adding that efforts must be made to preserve them despite the threat posed to Israel by terrorist cells and jihadist groups operating in the Sinai.Earlier this year, Nehushtan warned that a concrete plan was needed on the Iranian front.“There must be a credible military option against Iran, both as a deterrent and for practical purposes,” Nehushtan said at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv in March.

Ecumenical prayer in memory of the historic meeting held on 27 October 1986

MARIA TERESA PONTARA PEDERIVA “No more violence! No more war! No more terrorism! May every religion bring Justice, Peace, Forgiveness, Life and Love to Earth, in the name of God!” 

This was the appeal three religious leaders sent out late this morning from the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi, in memory of the Spirit of Assisi which marked the historical ecumenical meeting of 27 October 1986. John Paul II organised the meeting with representatives of the major world religions. But the Spirit of Assisi lives on. The meeting was held during Benedict XVI’s pontificate and this year it takes the form of a prayer to renew the commitment of religions towards achieving peace in the Middle East. The event is much more than an annual commemoration marked by specific gestures that contribute concretely to achieving peace in the world. What is happening in the Middle East today leads us to reflect on channels for dialogue.The 2013 meeting brings together a representative of the Jewish faith, David Rosen, International Director of Interreligious Affairs of ATC, the Secretary General of the Christian-Muslim Committee for Dialogue Mohamed Sammak, a Muslim and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal. The three were greeted in the square in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, by Domenico Sorrentino, Bishop of Assisi, Nocera Umbra and Gualdo Tadino and the General Ministers of three Franciscan families. The Ministers offered the religious representatives olive branches before going to the Tomb of St. Francis. “We are committed to promoting a culture of dialogue, to help mutual trust and under standing grow between individuals and peoples, these being the premises for genuine peace,” David Rosen said. “We commit to a sincere and patient dialogue, without seeing the things that make us different as insurmountable obstacles but recognising that comparing each other’s differences can bring us towards greater reciprocal understanding,” Mohamed Sammak said. “Having gathered here in Assisi together, we have reflected on peace, a God-given gift which is shared by all humanity. Despite belonging to different religious traditions we agree that to build peace you must love your neighbour and respect the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. With this conviction we will not tire of working in the great construction site of peace.”The night before the meeting at San Ruffino Cathedral, the diocesan Christian community held a prayer vigil and a “concert” for peace, with a musical ensemble by Commedia Harmonica, Cantori di Assisi and the Musical Chapel of the Basilica of St. Francis.

Russia eyes Egypt’s ports in bid to boost military presence’

Cold-shouldered by Washington, Cairo could be just the thing Putin needs to secure more influence in the region, report says

Russia has been seeking to upgrade its military ties with Egypt in an effort to augment its limited access to the Mediterranean and bolster its navy’s presence in the region, the London Times reported Sunday.According to the report, Moscow has been shopping for alternatives to the Tartus port in Syria, where it maintains a limited naval facility, due to fears that President Bashar Assad’s regime will eventually be toppled by rebel forces.The Times of Israel could not independently confirm the report.Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia would seek to maintain a permanent naval presence in the Mediterranean, but experts say the base in Tartus can’t provide sufficient support for such a presence and is too small for large ships.
“Tartus is vulnerable and not good enough and the Egyptian ports are perfect for the Russian navy,” the Times quoted an unnamed Israeli defense source as saying.An Egyptian diplomatic delegation was in Moscow over the weekend for meetings with Russian officials. According to the Times, the purpose of the trip was to lay the groundwork for a visit to Cairo by Putin.Egypt, whose relationship with the US has been suffering in the wake of recent political turmoil in the country, has been on the lookout for a new military patron, and Russia’s need for a larger, more reliable port of call in the Middle East could present a confluence of interests for Cairo and Moscow.On October 19, Israel’s Channel 2 reported that Egypt was looking to Russia to supply it with arms after the US froze much of its military aid in protest over the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi.Dissatisfied with Egypt’s progress toward reinstating a democratic government, the US announced earlier this month that it was freezing a sizable portion of the $1.5 billion it provides Egypt each year.US officials said the aid being withheld included 10 Apache helicopters, at a cost of more than $500 million, M1A1 tank kits and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The US had already suspended the delivery of four F-16 fighter jets and canceled biennial US-Egyptian military exercises.Israel has reportedly argued “directly and bluntly” with the Obama administration against cutting aid to Egypt, telling Washington it was making “a strategic error” in reducing financial assistance to Cairo.A renewed alliance with Moscow – the Soviet Union was Cairo’s chief backer for much of the second half of the twentieth century – could also infuse Egypt’s ebbing economy with much-needed tourism and investments.
Another ally of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, said Saturday that it had boosted its aid pledges to Egypt’s military-backed government to a total of $4.9 billion.The deal, signed for $1.9 billion in new loans, fuel supplies and other assistance, came during a visit to Abu Dhabi by Egyptian interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi.The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Germany said to warn Israel over skipping UN human rights review

Israel has come under increasing pressure to attend a United Nations human rights review, scheduled for this Tuesday, and has reportedly been warned that a failure to attend would cause harmful diplomatic fallout.
The review, a Universal Periodic Review carried out by the UN Human Rights Council, is obligatory every few years for all UN members, but foreign minister Avigdor Liberman severed Israel’s relationship with the HRC in 2012 after the agency announced a probe into Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Friday sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging Israeli to attend the review, Haaretz reported on Sunday. The letter acknowledged Israel’s difficulties with the HRC, but said not attending would have “serious consequences.”If Israel does not attend, the report noted, it will be the first country to fail to attend its Universal Periodic Review, and it is feared that such a refusal will set a precedent for other countries to do the same.In recent weeks Israel has reportedly been in discussions with other UN member states over a way for Israel to resume cooperation with the HRC, and therefore attend the periodic review. Israel participated in the first round of reviews, which was concluded by October 2011, but has so far failed to indicate whether it would participate in the second round, which is currently ongoing.Representatives from Jerusalem skipped a meeting in January to determine the three-member jury picked to oversee the review — Maldives, Sierra Leone and Venezuela — drawing calls by Pakistan for punitive action. Representatives of other countries also urged Israel to return to the fold and comply with the UNHRC’s review processes, but refrained from calling for punitive action, according to UN Watch, which attended the meeting.Israel has laid out two conditions, according to the Haaretz report: a limit to the implementation of Article 7, the permanent agenda item on the UN Human Rights Council which uniquely demands a discussion of Israel’s human rights issues at every meeting, and a way for Israel to join the UN’s Western Europe and Others Group, which would end Israel’s regional isolation at the UN (the country currently does not belong to a regional group, which limits Israel’s participation in UN activities).
Israel’s acceptance into the Western Europe and Others Group would require a unanimous vote from the member states comprising that group. In his letter to Netanyahu, the German foreign minister said that Israel’s attendance at the review would create “the best conditions for its being accepted into the Western European and Others Group.”In January, Israel’s permanent representative to the Geneva-based UNHRC, Ambassador Eviatar Manor, spoke to the council’s president, Remigiusz Henczel, about postponing the review.Manor said then that “Israel respected all human rights mechanisms, although it had a complex and difficult relation with the Council and OHCHR [Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights],” according to the official minutes of the meeting.Raphael Ahren contributed to this report

Former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw reportedly said during a debate in the British parliament that “unlimited” funds available to Jewish organizations and AIPAC in the US are used to control American policy in the Middle East.The comments were made last week during the Round Table Global Diplomatic Forum in the British House of Commons, according to former Knesset member Einat Wilf. Wilf was participating in the debate and posted what she said were Straw’s comments on her Facebook page.
Straw said, according to Wilf, that the greatest obstacles to peace between Israel and the Palestinians and her Arab neighbors are the “unlimited” funds available to Jewish organizations and AIPAC in the US, as well as Germany’s “obsession” with defending Israel.

Wrote Wilf: “I nearly fell off my rickety British chair today when former UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw spoke at the Round Table Global Diplomatic Forum in the British House of Commons. Wilf, a member of Knesset from 2010 to 2013 (Labor, and then the breakaway Independence party), said she repeatedly stressed in the debate that the root of the conflict lay in the Palestinian and Arab refusal to accept Israel’s sovereign legitimacy as a Jewish state. “Throughout the debate I reiterated that the origin of the conflict was the Arab and Palestinian unwillingness to accept the Jewish people’s legitimate right to a state of their own, and that as long as that willingness is absent there will be no true solution.”Straw announced Friday that he would step down as a member of Parliament from the Labor Party at the upcoming 2015 general election. He has served in Parliament continuously since 1979. Straw served as both home secretary and foreign secretary under prime minister Tony Blair, and as justice secretary under prime minister Gordon Brown.Straw, who has noted that his Blackburn constituency has some 25,000 Muslim residents and 23 mosques, has made anti-Israel comments in the past. In June, on a BBC radio program, he declared that Israel “has no territorial ambitions apart from stealing the land of the Palestinians.” When he was foreign secretary in 2001 he reportedly made comments that appeared to legitimize Palestinian terrorism, prompting then prime minister Ariel Sharon to cancel a meeting with him.

Box 3: Religion
The 2011 NHS collected information on religious affiliation only, regardless of whether respondents practised their religion, such as attendance at religious activities. Information on religious practice could be found from Statistics Canada's General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS surveys adults aged 15 and over living in private households in the 10 provinces. The latest information on religious practice from the GSS was 2011.

Two-thirds of the population affiliated with Christian faith

According to the 2011 NHS, the largest religion in Canada was Christianity. Of the roughly 32,852,300 people represented in the NHS, about 22,102,700, or just over two-thirds (67.3%), reported that they were affiliated with a Christian religion.Consistent with changing immigration patterns, there were growing proportions of the population who reported religious affiliations other than Christian. These religions included Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist. In 2011, about 2,373,700 people, or 7.2% of Canada's population, reported affiliation with one of these religions. This was up from 4.9% a decade earlier, as recorded in the 2001 Census.The 2011 NHS data also showed that roughly 329,500 people identified themselves as Jewish, 1.0% of the population.About 7,850,600 people, nearly one-quarter of the population (23.9%), had no religious affiliation. This was up from 16.5% a decade earlier, as recorded in the 2001 Census.

Roman Catholics largest Christian religious group

Roman Catholics were the largest Christian religious group in 2011. Almost 12,728,900 people identified themselves as Roman Catholic, representing 38.7% of Canada's population as a whole.The second largest Christian group were those affiliated with the United Church, with just under 2,007,600 people, or 6.1% of the total population.The third largest Christian denomination was Anglican, reported by about 1,631,800 people who represented 5.0% of the total population.Another 4.5% of the population simply said they were Christian. Baptists formed the fifth largest denomination among those of Christian faith, representing 1.9% of the population.As well, 1.7% of the total population, or about 550,700 people, identified themselves as members of a Christian Orthodox religion. The largest group was Greek Orthodox whose adherents numbered roughly 220,300 or 40.0% of the Christian Orthodox.

Increased share of recent immigrants were Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist

People who reported Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist had a smaller presence in Canada. Among these groups, Muslim was the largest. In 2011, just over 1 million individuals identified themselves as Muslim on the NHS. They represented 3.2% of the nation's total population, up from 2.0% recorded in the 2001 Census.Just under 498,000 people identified themselves as Hindu, representing 1.5% of the population. About 455,000 people reported they were affiliated with the Sikh religion, 1.4% of the population, while there were around 366,800 Buddhists, 1.1% of the population.In 2011, the median age of Canada's Muslim population was 28.9 years of age, while the median age for the Sikh population was 32.8 and the Hindu population, 34.2. In contrast, the median age for the larger Christian groups was higher. The median age of individuals who identified themselves as Roman Catholics in 2011 was 42.9; Anglican, 51.1; and United Church, 52.3.Recent immigration trends were a key factor in the presence of some religions in Canada. Those reporting Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist made up 2.9% of immigrants who came before 1971. But they accounted for 33.0% of immigrants who arrived between 2001 and 2011.Immigrants who arrived in earlier decades were predominantly affiliated with the Christian faith. In 2011, 78.4% of the immigrants who came prior to 1971 identified themselves as Christians. Christian still made up the largest share of immigrants who came recently, 41.7% of those who came between 2001 and 2005 and 47.5% of newcomers of the last five years, but their share has declined.In 2011, 16.0% of immigrants who came before 1971 had no religious affiliation. This proportion rose to 22.0% among those who came between 2001 and 2005, and 19.5% of the recent immigrants. On average, people who had no religious affiliation tended to be younger than the general population. Their median age in 2011 was 32.7.Among Muslim immigrants who came to Canada between 2006 and 2011, the largest share came from Pakistan. Recent immigrants who reported Hindu or Sikh religion came mainly from India, while most Buddhists came from China. Among recent immigrants with no religious affiliation, the top source country was China.

Traditional Aboriginal spirituality

Just over 64,900 people reported in the NHS that they were affiliated with traditional Aboriginal spirituality. They represented 4.5% of the Aboriginal population and 0.2% of the population as a whole.Most of the people who affiliated with traditional Aboriginal spirituality resided in Ontario (24.5%) and the Western provinces of Alberta (23.3%), Saskatchewan (18.9%) and British Columbia (15.9%).

Provincial and sub-provincial

The largest share of Roman Catholics (45.3%) resided in Quebec, followed by Ontario, 31.0%.
Ontario was also home to 73.6% of the Hindu population in 2011, as well as 55.2% of the Muslim population and 44.6% of the Buddhist population. The roughly 582,000 Muslims who lived in Ontario represented 4.6% of the province's population. The roughly 366,700 individuals who identified as Hindu accounted for 2.9% of Ontario's population and Buddhists, about 163,800, made-up 1.3% of the population.Two-thirds of Canada's 1 million Muslim population lived in the three largest census metropolitan areas (CMAs) combined-Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver. Toronto had the largest population of Muslims, at just over 424,900. Montréal had just over 221,000 and Vancouver about 73,200.Among the 455,000 Sikhs in Canada, 44.2% lived in British Columbia and 39.5% lived in Ontario. Sikhs represented 4.7% of British Columbia's population and 1.4% of Ontario's population.Slightly over three-quarters (77.5%) of British Columbia's Sikh population, just over 155,900, lived in the CMA of Vancouver, while another about 28,200 lived in Abbotsford - Mission.Of Ontario's Hindu population, the vast majority (88.7%) lived in the CMA of Toronto.The share of people with no religious affiliation was highest in Ontario and British Columbia. More than 1,165,000 people in the CMA of Toronto, about 21.1% of its population, had no religious affiliation, as did 945,400 people in the CMA of Vancouver, or 41.5% of its population.

One out of every 5 people a visible minority

In 2011, nearly 6,264,800 people identified themselves as a member of the visible minority population on the NHS questionnaire. They represented about 1 out of every 5 people (19.1%) in Canada's total population.
In comparison, the 2006 Census enumerated 5,068,100 individuals who identified themselves as a member of the visible minority population, 16.2% of the total population at the time.This increase in the visible minority population was due largely to the number of immigrants who arrived in Canada in recent decades from non-European countries.In 2011, 13.7% of newcomers were born in Europe, while another 3.9% were born in the United States. The remaining 82.4% came from Asia (including the Middle East), the Caribbean and Central and South America, Africa and Oceania and other regions.The share of visible minorities has increased among immigrants who came in the more recent decades. The 2011 NHS data showed that visible minorities accounted for 78.0% of the immigrants who arrived between 2006 and 2011, 76.7% of those who arrived in the previous five-year period and 74.8% of immigrants who arrived in the 1990s.In contrast, visible minorities made up 12.4% of immigrants who arrived before 1971. During the 1970s, this proportion more than quadrupled to 53.0% and further increased to 67.4% of those who arrived in the 1980s.

South Asians largest visible minority group

Combined, the three largest visible minority groups in 2011 – South Asians, Chinese and Blacks – accounted for 61.3% of the visible minority population. They were followed by Filipinos, Latin Americans, Arabs, Southeast Asians, West Asians, Koreans and Japanese.A total of 1,567,400 individuals identified themselves as South Asian, the largest group. They accounted for one-quarter (25.0%) of the total visible minority population and 4.8% of Canada's total population. South Asians were also the largest visible minority group recorded in the 2006 Census. Two-thirds of South Asians reported East Indian ethnic ancestry, 9.3% reported Pakistani, 8.5% reported Sri Lankan and 4.7% reported Punjabi origins. These origins were reported by South Asians either alone or with other origins.The second largest visible minority group was Chinese, who numbered just over 1,324,700. They made up 21.1% of the visible minority population and 4.0% of the total population. A majority (96.8%) of the Chinese visible minorities reported Chinese ethnic ancestry, either alone or in combination of other ancestries. A small proportion of Chinese visible minorities reported multiple ethnic origins (8.6%).Just under 945,700 individuals identified themselves as Blacks, the third largest group. They made up 15.1% of the visible minority population and 2.9% of the total population.
In 2011, 29.8% of Blacks reported multiple ethnic origins. The top ancestral origins among Blacks were Caribbean and African such as Jamaican (22.8%), Haitian (13.9%), Somali (4.4%) and Trinidadian/Tobagonian (3.7%). These origins were reported by Blacks either alone or with other origins. There were also Blacks who reported British Isles (10.9%), Canadian (10.8%) and French (4.3%) origins.

Most visible minorities lived in urban centres

As was the case with the immigrant population, the vast majority (95.2%) of visible minorities lived in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta. In Ontario, nearly 3,279,600 people identified themselves as a member of a visible minority group, more than one-half (52.3%) of the total visible minority population.
Visible minorities accounted for the highest proportion of the provincial population in British Columbia (27.3%), where they numbered nearly 1.2 million. In Ontario where the largest number of visible minorities lived in 2011, slightly over one-quarter (25.9%) of its population belonged to a visible minority. In Alberta, visible minorities represented 18.4% of the population in the province, and in Quebec, 11.0%.Most of Canada's visible minorities (95.9%) lived in census metropolitan areas (CMAs), compared with 69.3% of the total population. The CMAs of Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver alone were home to 7 out of 10 visible minorities, compared with just over one-third (35.2%) of the total population.The vast majority (85.1%) of the Toronto CMA's 2.6 million visible minorities lived in four municipalities: the city of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Markham. In comparison, these municipalities were home to 74.4% of Toronto's total population. Among these municipalities, Markham had the highest proportion of visible minorities, they accounted for 72.3% of its population. Visible minorities made up 66.4% of Brampton's population, 53.7% of Mississauga's and 49.1% of the population of the city of Toronto.The Vancouver CMA was home to 1.0 million visible minorities, or 16.4% of all visible minorities in Canada. They accounted for 45.2% of the population in Vancouver. Within the Vancouver CMA, the municipalities of Richmond (70.4%), Greater Vancouver A (62.2%), Burnaby (59.5%), Surrey (52.6%) and the city of Vancouver (51.8%) had higher proportions of visible minorities than the average for the whole Vancouver metropolitan area.In the case of Montréal CMA where just over 762,300 visible minorities lived, visible minorities made up 20.3% of the population in the CMA. The municipalities of Montréal (67.0%), Laval (10.7%), Longueuil (4.2%) and Brossard (4.0%) were home to 85.8% of all visible minorities in the CMA of Montréal. A Catholic church in the UK has been sold to the Muslim community. St Peter’s Catholic church in Cobridge will become the Madina Mosque.The site was put on sale following a dramatic decline in the number of parishioners. A spokeswoman for the archdiocese declared that “the parish of Cobridge has a long history, but in recent times the number of Catholics in the area has shrunk to such an extent that those attending Mass at St. Peter’s were simply no longer able to maintain a priest and the church buildings”.Islam is replacing Christianity as first religion everywhere in Europe.In France, the country of famous Catholic intellectuals such as Emmanuel Mounier, Georges Bernanos, Francois Mauriac, Jacques Maritain and Teilhard de Chardin, dozens of churches have been razed to make way for mosques, showrooms and malls.The last cases are in Saint -Blaise du Breuil, Allier, Saint -Pie- X Hérault and Saint- Jacques d’Abbeville in the Somme. The Observatory for Religious Heritage claims that “for the first time places of worship are destroyed for no apparent reason and turned into parking lots, restaurants, boutiques, gardens and homes”. According to the French Senate, 2,800 Christian religious buildings are now at risk of being demolished.France now has just 9.000 priests measured against 40,000 during the last war. Many churches are replaced by mosques.
In Quai Malakoff, Nantes, the old Church of St. Christopher became the Mosque of Forqane. Some people evoke the “Gott ist tot” (God is dead) of Friedrich Nietzsche.According to a report in the weekly magazine Spirit, in the next two years 15,000 of the 45,000 existing churches in Germany, a third of the total, will be demolished or sold.But this is not an economic problem. Meanwhile in Petriplatz, in the central Mitte district of Berlin, there is the project of a multicultural building unique in Europe: a mosque, a church and a synagogue all under the same roof. The building will be symbolically built on the ruins of the old church of St. Peter. They call it a “religious amalgam”.In the Netherlands, two Christian buildings close every week. It is not uncommon to find ritual objects once used in the Dutch churches in Indonesia, Congo, Philippines but also in the former communist countries, such as Ukraine. The Netherlands has, in fact, become the world’s most important exporter of religious objects. At this rate, it will cease to exist by 2050, according to church officials.In Helmond, a town south of Bilthoven, a supermarket has moved in a former church. A library was opened in a Dominican church in Maastricht, while two churches in Utrecht and Amsterdam have recently been converted into mosques.In the ultra liberal and tolerant Netherlands, these are known as “the dead churches”.These are the symbols of the existential condition of the West: the vacuum in the “the evening land” will be filled by the religion coming from the East, “the morning land".

Russia's “protectorate” over Middle Eastern Christians

Defending Middle Eastern Christians has become a strategic asset for Putin and is in perfect harmony with the Patriarchate of Moscow's mission

Gianni Valente Rome The Kremlin is about to consider granting citizenship to about 50 thousand Syrian Christians in the region of Qualamun after they issued a collective request to Moscow’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In statements issued in the past few days, the spokesmen for President Putin and the Ministry confirmed that the request is being examined by the highest Russian authorities. “This is the first time since Christ’s birth that we, the Christians of Saidnaya and Maara Saidnaya, Maalula and Maarun are being threatened with expulsion from our land.”The letter was full of praise for Putin’s Russia, which was described as a “powerful factor for global peace and stability”. But its remarks about western countries were less flattering: “the aim of the terrorists who are being supported by the West, is to eliminate our presence in our homeland. They use the most abhorrent methods to achieve this, murdering ordinary people for example.”The fact that the Christian cause has caught the attention of the highest levels of Russia’s government seems to imply that the Kremlin sees their case as important in terms of geopolitics. Indeed this may be the main reason Russia has been defending their cause. The Patriarchate of Moscow’s spokesman said that the letter from the 50 thousand was proof of the “great authority” Russia has at the moment in the Middle East, “particularly among the Christian minorities living in that area.” Middle Eastern Christians  “have known for centuries that no other country would look after their interests in the same way Russia would,” said Archpriest Nikolaj Balashov, the number two man of the Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations. “To reaffirm the ties between Russia and the Churches in Syria, on 14 October the Moscow Spiritual Academy decided to erect a sculpture ensemble with a statue of Jesus at its centre, on a mountain in Syria which is also home to the Marian shrine of Saidnaya. Arab Christian pilgrims come to this shrine from all over the Middle East. The sculpture ensemble was intended as a symbol of peace in a country ravaged by war. This goes hand in hand with the Patriarchate of Moscow’s active efforts to champion the Middle Eastern Christian cause in the face of Islamist violence.To express his concern for these Christians in a politically eloquent way ahead of the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Patriarch Kirill sent Barack Obama a letter, asking the US president to listen to the cries of religious leaders who “unanimously” opposed proposals for military intervention against Assad. In his message, the Patriarch talked about “the threat of mass extermination or exile” faced by Christians in the Middle East. He urged others to join Russia’s diplomatic efforts and make the most of the opportunities that have opened up for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.” He referred explicitly to the negotiations over the dismantling of Syria’s chemical weapons.The Russian Orthodox Church has always been interested in the vicissitudes of the Middle Eastern Churches. Now, the Orthodox leaders’ calls for the protection of Christians in Arab countries fits Putin’s plans for the Middle East like a glove. More than twenty years after the fall of the USSR and with the Soviet communist era’s atheist years long gone, Putin is, in true neo-Zarist-style, reinstating himself as protector of Eastern Christians, as part of geopolitical policy.The Patriarchate of Moscow has strengthened its relations with the Middle East’s battered Orthodox Churches by giving significant financial help: last August, the Russian Orthodox Church donated 300 thousand dollars to the Patriarchate of Antioch to help those who are suffering as a result of the conflict. In July, Primates and representatives of Middle Eastern Churches met Putin in person, during their visit to Moscow  for the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. Kirill was the last great foreign Christian leader to be received by Bashar al Assad, in Damascus, back in November 2011, when 5 thousand people had already lost their lives in the conflict.But while Russia strengthens its defence of Middle Eastern Christians, the French, who were once big protectors of these Christian communities are now becoming increasingly less so. Eastern Church leaders have been losing trust in French foreign policy which supports the Arab uprisings.  On a visit to Paris in September 2011, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi was criticised by Sarkozy or not showing enough enthusiasm for the so-called “Arab Springs”. The former French President was convinced that these revolts were going to wipe Assad out and light the spark of democracy. 
Two years on, the revolts against the regime have been taken over by Islamist groups, Syriac Catholic archbishop, Behnam Hindo told Vatican Insider: “I made it very clear to the foreign affairs minister’s secretary, Laurent Fabius in our last interview: you talk about the war in Syria, about who must win, who needs to go. But you never ask what the expectations and requests of the Syrian people are. Maybe you haven’t yet realised that the French protectorate over Syria ended some time ago.”

Such meetings take place about twice a year.Steinitz, speaking Thursday to Israeli journalists, said his message to the Americans was that the Iranians must be stripped of any enrichment capacity, describing that as “the minimal agreement for Israel to live with it in peace.”Israeli officials have not said what the country would do should the United States and Iran strike a deal short of Israel’s demands, but Netanyahu has not ruled out a military strike to keep Iran from achieving a nuclear weapons capacity.The United States led major powers in renewing talks with Iran this month aimed at making more transparent that country’s nuclear program.The talks were launched after the election this summer of Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate who campaigned on outreach to the West, partly as a means of relieving crippling sanctions.Rouhani says he is ready to make more transparent a nuclear program he insists is for peaceful purposes, but he has ruled out any permanent end to enrichment.The Obama administration has not publicly said whether it would accept continued enrichment, but reports have said that Western diplomats may accept uranium enrichment at 3.5-5 percent, well short of the 90 percent needed for weaponization.Steinitz said that Iran’s nuclear infrastructure is such that even at 3.5 percent enrichment, it could break out to weaponization within months and would be able in its first year to manufacture 5-7 bombs.Steinitz, who also met with lawmakers in Congress and Vice President Joe Biden during his stay, said he backed intensifying sanctions as a means of increasing leverage. Some leading congressional lawmakers back such an intensification; the Obama administration says that such a step now could scuttle the renewed talks.The next round of talks between the major powers and Iran is set for next mont.

A “Religious News Service” study warns that the number of baptisms and church weddings has dropped. “People want God but they’re not happy with churches”

The country which has “In God we trust” stamped on its currency seems in fact to be trusting in God less and less every year since the motto first appeared on coins in 1864 and later became the national motto in 1956.
 
The study carried out by the Religious New Service, shows that one in five Americans today say they have no religious identity. Religious practice has taken a dive among people of any denomination who call themselves Christian, starting with children’s baptism. In 1970 there were 426,000 marriages in U.S. Catholic churches — a full 20% of all U.S. marriages that year. By contrast, in 2011, there were 164,000 such weddings — only 8% of all marriages. But in both years, Catholics were 23% of the national population. Baptisms have followed the same trend. Back in 1970 there were approximately 1 million baptisms registered but by 2011 this had dropped to exactly 793,103.“There is a de-emphasis on practicing faith. People want God but they’re not happy with churches,” the Rev. Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee said. According to Page, sacraments such as baptism have fallen victim to an “anti-denominational, anti-institutional, even anti-church era.” Like the Catholic Church, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) which rightly considers baptism a key part of the Christian faith, recorded 314,959 baptisms in 2012, a low which has not been seen since 1948. This is odd when one considers that the number of faithful joining the SBC has risen from 6 million back then to nearly 16 million now.An interesting point for religious scholars is that even Hispanic Americans who have always been considered “reservoirs of faith” compared to their more secular Anglo-Saxon brothers are showing a tendency to follow national trends. Hispanics account for 34% of US Catholics and of this, a significant 13% claim they do not have any religious identity. The same percentage of Hispanics seek their spiritual path in the Evangelical denominations. While there was great emphasis on the number of Hispanics – particularly young Hispanics – who switch from Catholicism to the Evangelical denominations, the same cannot be said for those Catholics who decide not to have any faith at all. 80% of those who claim not to have a religious identity are in favour of same-sex marriage, while only 21% of Evangelicals are in favour of such unions.
 
All this is leading to the sacraments – including baptism – being practiced less and less. In 2006 1 in 4 families in the US was composed of people of different religious faiths; in 1988 this dropped to 15% according to Naomi Schaefer Riley’s “Til Death Do Us Part”. To prevent disagreements, many of these families decided not to baptise their children in any particular Church immediately. Divorce is three times more frequent in these types of marriages than in marriages where spouses belong to the same religious community. The problems that follow after these divorces have a negative effect on the children’s religious life. There has also been an increase in the number of marriages celebrated in a place of worship. This is another clear sign that the couple in question does not see faith or a faith’s sacraments as a key part of the life they share together

The Mideast’s growing frustration with Obama

Papers Friday focus on the value of being a US ally, given the reported NSA eavesdropping on 35 world leaders, and the recent Iranian rapprochement

“The US doesn’t heed anyone…” says Yatom. “It is entirely possible that this also happening by us, because every time the Americans think they need to listen to something, they do it.”Yotam explains that there are two issues around which the Americans are likely spying on Israel — negotiations with Palestinians and the Iranian nuclear program. “It is important for them to know what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu really thinks… They have interests here because they want to be able to contend with Israeli claims that arise when talking about these issues,” the ex-Mossad chief explains.“The Americans rightly see themselves as a superpower, but wrongly feel that they can do whatever they want, including the eavesdropping.”It is no coincidence that on the facing page, Maariv places the story on Sunni and Israeli disillusionment with America’s Iran outreach. “The alliance between the US and the Sunni world is collapsing. Saudi Arabia and Israel are standing shoulder to shoulder facing Washington on the Iranian issue,” reads the front page underline leading to the story.Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon are convinced that if sanctions on Iran are intensified now, Tehran will crack, Maariv writes. They are counting on Congress to ramp up sanctions even as Obama lobbies them to hold off while he pursues talks with the Islamic Republic. The article says that senior Israeli officials have been complaining that the US government simply doesn’t understand that they are being lied to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“We are telling them Der Balak [an Arabic slang term that means ‘you dare not’ in Israel],” says Yaalon. “Don’t be seduced, Western leaders, by the Iranian charm offensive…We are warning about this because we see signs in the West of ‘They’re suddenly speaking nicely, there’s a change in Iran, let’s move toward them.’”It also quotes the Saudi intelligence chief who said that his country is facing “a meaningful change in its policies,” that could reshape its cooperation with the US over the Iran issue. Israelis refused to confirm that the two countries are working together to stop Iran’s nuclear push.Haaretz also puts the NSA Guardian story on the front page. In addition, the Israeli newspaper runs an opinion piece by the Guardian’s Julian Borger, provocatively entitled, “What value is there in being an American ally?’ “The question that stands out is what does it mean to be an American ally in the 21st century?” Borger writes. “Germany and France are partners in NATO and their soldiers fought and died next to American soldiers in Afghanistan. Mexico is running a bloody war against drug cartels with the US, and for it. The President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, whose telephone was also tracked by the NSA, may have criticized America in the past, but she certainly isn’t an enemy.”Though Yedioth Ahronoth also ties the NSA eavesdropping debacle to the lack of trust in America’s Iran policy, the newspaper does not give the story as prominent a billing as did its competitors. Yedioth chooses to give more prominent coverage to a mob hit in Ashkelon and Bibi’s reported plan to build more settlements to pacify his right wing as he releases more Palestinian prisoners.“But it’s not only in Europe where the US is losing friends,” writes Yedioth. “Also in the Arab world it is taking fire from two of its oldest allies: Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The crisis between Washington and Cairo — especially since the military took power from President Morsi in July — seriously harmed the trust the Egyptian leadership had in the American president.“But most of the criticism toward Obama comes from the direction of Saudi Arabia, which is furious at the US for its negotiations with Iran. It is no coincidence that this week the Saudi intelligence head said that the Obama administration ‘is conducting a shabby policy’ in the Middle East and that ‘Saudi Arabia should consider an alternative policy’ toward the United States.”Israel Hayom does not have the NSA story on its front page at all, leading instead with the mafia assassination in Ashkelon on Thursday and a poll the newspaper conducted in which it found that over 80% of Israelis do not want indicted mayors to be allowed to run.An opinion piece from Boaz Bismuth on the spying scandal sees the European reaction as something of a show.“What can Paris, Berlin, and Rome actually do?” he asks. “Not much. Declare war on the United States? Expel ambassadors?” He then quotes the former head of France’s internal security service who called the European reaction hypocritical.“America eavesdrops just like France eavesdrops.”In addition to foreign policy, the newspapers all feature stories on Ghassan Alian, 41, a Druze IDF colonel who will be the first from his community to command the storied Golani infantry brigade. The Shfaram resident is not the first Druze commander of an active-duty infantry brigade, however. Brigadier-General Imad Fares commanded the Givati Brigade more than a decade ago.
