Last week’s decision by the Swiss Central Bank to scrap its currency cap has had major repercussions in the EU’s largest eastern member state, Poland.The move saw the Swiss franc jump to 4.32 zlotys from 3.53, a rise of more than 21 percent and the most significant in comparison to other European currencies.For a while it even reached 5.14 zlotys, but Monday (21 January) it was around 4.30. This was a dramatic turn for the almost 600,000 Poles who have mortgages denominated in Swiss francs – particularly as most of them took their loans when the Swiss franc cost 2.50 zlotys.“It was a very surprising decision by SNB which caused panic on the financial markets. This move couldn’t have been predicted especially since only one month ago the Swiss National Bank was claiming that it would keep the Swiss franc/euro rate stable,” Bartosz Sawicki, a financial analyst, told EUobserver.The overall value of credit in Swiss francs, which constitute around 40 percent of all mortgages in Poland, jumped from 131bn zlotys up to 157bn, according to The Polish Bank Association.For a household, it means that the average monthly installment, which was around 2,000 zlotys in October 2014, suddenly jumped by a fifth.If the Swiss Franc reaches 5 zlotys it will cause a monthly installment hike of one third.That is too much for an average household to deal with.“This may lead to a sudden increase in the number of consumer bankruptcy. We had 21,000 endangered loans last year,” says Sawicki.

Threat to banks

This could also be a threat to some Polish banks, such as Millennium Bank and Getin Noble, which had a large portfolio of Swiss-denominated mortgages.Poland’s financial markets regulator, KNF, issued a statement saying that even if the Swiss franc reaches the 5 zloty level there is no systemic risk for the bank sector as it can absorb the difference.But Sawicki, an independent professional, is a bit more sceptical.“The road to stabilising the exchange rate is going to be rough especially since we have such important events, like the Greek parliamentary election (on 25 January) which may again shake the markets,” he notes.He added that a “very optimistic scenario” would see the Swiss franc at 3.8 zlotys at the end of this year.

Consumers pay

The sudden appreciation of the Swiss franc has been seized by the opposition parties, with Poland set for presidential and parliamentary elections later this year.Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the biggest opposition party Peace and Justice, argues the problem should be solved using a Hungarian model – a currency conversion on a strict exchange rate for all credits in Swiss francs.This was done in Hungary in November last year to ease the financial burden for 600,000 Hungarians in a country of 10 million people.

However Polish finance minister Mateusz Szczurek Tuesday said there is no need to freeze the Swiss Franc exchange rate."This is the normal risk related to foreign currency loans. The burden lies both on the banks and the borrowers. While taking such credit the client agrees to take the risk of the exchange rate's changes while the bank agrees to bare the costs of the interest rate's changes. This is a fair deal"The Swiss manuoeuvre is also causing headaches for thousands of borrowers in Romania, Croatia and Austria. Meanwhile a new Polish Facebook group for class action against banks giving mortgages in Swiss francs got more than 2,500 likes.“People are feeling cheated by huge financial institutions which were the first to earn profits from credits in Swiss francs. If somebody is giving loans which are so vulnerable to accidental and external factors, it is speculation which is forbidden by law,” said Witold Modzelewski, an economist, in an interview given over the weekend.“That leads us to class actions against banks which we will see coming soon,” he added.

Yaoundé (AFP) - The head of Boko Haram -- the enigmatic Abubakar Shekau -- has openly taunted the countries being menaced by the armed Islamist group as they call for a united effort to crush it.
In a video claiming responsibility for the bloody attack on the Nigerian town of Baga in early January, Shekau poured contempt on the presidents of Chad, Cameroon and Niger, goading Chad's Idriss Deby Itno with the message: "African kings... I challenge you to attack me now. I am ready."The Baga attack on January 3 in which hundreds are feared to have been killed has been called a crime against humanity by Washington and Paris.In the video that has just emerged on YouTube, Shekau also accused Cameroon President Paul Biya of being too afraid to ask for help in the face of the group's ever-increasing belligerence.Cameroon has also seen repeated recent attacks, including the kidnapping of dozens of people, mostly women and children, during a deadly attack on Sunday.To Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou, whom Shekau noted had commiserated with France after the recent Islamist attacks in Paris, he said: "Muhammad Yusuf (Mahamadou Issoufou), is that your job? Little is known of "Shekau", with some experts and Nigerian security officials insisting that he is in fact a composite character whose role is taken by a rotating cast of different militant fighters.According to security services, the original Abubakar Shekau was the son of poor farmers who was radicalised while attending theological schools and took over Boko Haram in 2010.The Nigerian military said last September that a man posing as Shekau in videos posted online had in fact been killed after fighting with troops in the far northeast.The United States and other experts, however, have questioned the credibility of that claim while Shekau outright rejected it in a video obtained by AFP last October."Here I am, alive. Man arrested over alleged chemical threat in Canada capital-AFP-JAN 21,15-YAHOONEWS

Ottawa (AFP) - Police arrested an American biochemistry professor at an Ottawa hotel Wednesday over an alleged chemical threat that prompted authorities to evacuate the building, police and media reported."We apprehended a male at the Chimo hotel without incident," a police spokeswoman told AFP."He is being held on a Canada-wide warrant issued relating to charges in Nova Scotia province."Earlier, police evacuated the hotel and brought in hazmat and tactical squads, after reportedly receiving a tip from the man's wife that he had travelled from Halifax to Ottawa in a van packed with dangerous chemicals.The man's vehicle has also been located, police confirmed.Local media identified the suspect as American national Christopher Phillips, and said he is a professor at a university in Halifax where he lives with his family.They also said he was once a biochemical weapons expert for the US military.Ottawa police Constable Chuck Benoit told reporters a police negotiator contacted the suspect at the hotel at around 9 am local time.He exited his sixth floor room and was arrested on an outstanding warrant. SANAA (Reuters) - Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi expressed readiness on Wednesday to accept demands for constitutional change and power sharing with Houthi rebels who took up positions outside his home after defeating his guards in two days of battle.Gulf neighbors denounced what they described as a coup in Yemen, although both the Houthis and some of the president's allies denied that he had been overthrown.A source close to the president said Hadi had met an official of the Shi'ite Muslim rebel group, and denied the president was under house arrest inside the residence, surrounded since early morning by Houthi fighters.In a statement issued in the mid-evening, Hadi said the Shi'ite Muslim group had a right to be appointed to posts in all state institutions, and a draft constitution that has been a source of disagreement between him and the Houthis was open to amendment.He said the Houthis agreed to withdraw fighters from areas overlooking his palace, his home and the official residence of the prime minister, and had promised to free immediately his chief of staff, whom they have held captive for several days.After clashes at the president's office and home on Tuesday, the Houthis' leader threatened in a speech overnight to take further "measures" unless Hadi bowed to his demand for constitutional changes that would increase Houthi power.The Houthis, friendly to Iran, swept into the capital four months ago and have emerged as the dominant force in the country. SOUTHERN PROTEST

Yemeni military sources said the Houthis also seized the military aviation college close to Hadi's home, and the main missile base in Sanaa, without a fight.In the south of the country, Hadi's home region, local officials denounced what they called a coup against him. They shut the air and sea ports of the south's main city, Aden, and closed land entry routes.Gulf Arab states, which support Hadi and oppose Iranian influence in the region, denounced what they called terrorist acts by the Houthis and their allies. They demanded state bodies be returned to government control and Hadi's chief of staff, detained by the Houthis last week, be released. Yemen, an impoverished nation of 25 million, has been plagued by Islamist insurgency, separatist conflict, sectarian strife and economic crisis for years. An "Arab Spring" popular uprising in 2011 led to the downfall of long-ruling President Ali Abdullah Saleh, bringing more chaos.The Houthis, rebels from the north drawn from a large Shi'ite minority that ruled a 1,000-year kingdom in Yemen until 1962, stormed into the capital in September but had mostly held back from directly challenging Hadi until last week.They accuse the president of seeking to bypass a power-sharing deal signed when they seized Sanaa in September, and say they are also working to protect state institutions from corrupt civil servants and officers trying to plunder state property.Houthi fighters battled guards at Hadi's home and entered the presidential palace on Tuesday. REGIONAL POWER

The accord gives the group, which takes its name from the family of its leader, a role in all military and civil state bodies. The Houthis, who say the accord has not been implemented fast enough, also demand changes to the divisions of regional power in a draft constitution.Their decision to stop short of toppling Hadi, an ally of the West and supporter of U.S. drone strikes, may be intended to keep regional Sunni Muslim states and the United States from rallying against them.Abdel-Malek's speech left little doubt however that his movement was now in effective control of the country. Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis on Wednesday described large families as a "gift from God", just days after he said Catholics did not need to "breed like rabbits".In an apparent row back from comments he made on his way back from the Philippines, the Argentinian pontiff argued that an unfair economic system is the primary cause of poverty, rather than overpopulation."The meetings with families and young people in Manila were stand-out moments during the visit to the Philippines," Francis told a crowd of around 7,000 gathered in St Peter's square for his weekly audience."Healthy families are essential to the life of society. It provides us with consolation and hope to see so many large families who welcome children as a gift from God," he said."These families know that each child is a blessing."Francis surprised reporters on the papal plane on Sunday by recounting an anecdote about how he had once asked a mother who had seven children by caesarian section and was pregnant with her eighth if she wanted to "leave behind seven young orphans"."She said, 'I trust in God.' But God gave us the means to be responsible," Francis said. "Some think -- and excuse the term -- that to be good Catholics, they must be like rabbits."Following the Church's teachings did not mean "Christians should have children one after the other", he added in comments that made headlines worldwide.Catholic teaching prohibits the use of artificial contraception but allows the use of the so-called rhythm method, where couples avoid unwanted pregnancy by planning sex on days during the woman's menstrual cycle on which she is less likely to conceive.

Francis's comments had particular resonance in the Philippines, where large families are seen by some as perpetuating and exacerbating poverty levels which act as a restraint on development.The Church claims more than 80 percent of the country's 100 million as its followers and it waged a 15-year battle to block a family planning law. The law was finally introduced last year, allowing the state to distribute free contraceptives.The Church's opposition to contraception was formalised by former pope Paul VI in 1968, as the birth control pill was beginning to be widely used in the developed world.On Sunday, the current pontiff described his predecessor as a "prophet" who had been rightly concerned about ideas advocating restrictions on the poor having children.At the same time, Francis appeared to approvingly cite population experts who say three children per family is an ideal number.Whatever his exact thinking on the subject, the emphasis was different on Wednesday."I hear some people saying that families with many children and the birth of many babies are among the causes of poverty," the pope said."That seems to me to be a simplistic opinion. I can say, we all can say, that the principal cause of poverty is an economic system that has removed man from its centre and replaced him with the God of money."

He mentioned gender as an example of the “colonisation of peoples”, recalling dictatorships’ attempts at indoctrination. He announced forthcoming trips to Africa and Latin America and repeated the example of the punch. While talking about falling birth rates he also pointed out that being Catholic does not mean breeding “like rabbits”. He said he was touched by the gestures of the Filipinos. on the flight from Manila to Rome-Francis had tears in his eyes as he described the striking gestures of Filipinos during his visit. When asked what he meant by the phrase “ideological colonisation” of the family, he responded with a concrete example of a first hand experience he had in Argentina when the condition for receiving funding for schools was linked to the introduction of textbooks on the gender theory. In his interview with journalists on the return flight from Manila to Rome Francis returned to the issues of freedom of expression and provocation, reiterating that violence is unjustified but calling on people to exercise the human virtue of prudence. Speaking about corruption, he recalled an incident he experienced first hand. He announced that he would be visiting Latin America and Africa in the coming months. He talked about contraception and responsible parenthood denouncing the neo-Malthusian theory in favour of birth control. But regarding child birth he also said: “Some think that being a good Catholic means breeding like rabbits.” At the end of the press conference which lasted over an hour, Francis wished the dean of the Vatican press corps, Televisa’s Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki, happy birthday. He presented her with a gift and offered her and all journalists on board a cake to celebrate.

What the Filipinos taught me

“I was moved by their gestures, they were not formal gestures that followed protocol, they were genuine gestures that came from the heart (the Pope said this with tears welling up in his eyes, Ed.). Faith, love, family, the future, in that gesture fathers made of lifting their children up so the Pope could bless them. They lifted their children up, a gesture you don’t see in other parts of the world. It was as if they were saying: this here is my treasure, this is my future, this is what makes working and suffering worth it. A unique gesture that came from the heart. The second thing that struck me a great deal was their genuine enthusiasm, their joy, their happiness, their ability to celebrate. Even in the rain… Mothers who brought their sick children… So many disabled children, disabilities you really notice, they didn’t hide their children, they brought them with them so they could be blessed: this is my child, it’s like this but it’s mine. All mothers do this but it was the way in which it was done that struck me… A maternal and paternal gesture. A people who know how to suffer and are able to get back on their feet and get on with life.”

Poverty in Manila and Colombo

“The poor are the victims of this culture of waste. Today people are cast aside, the caste system comes to mind… In my diocese, the diocese of Buenos Aires there was a new area called Portomadero and not far from there were the villas miserias. In the first part there were 36 luxury restaurants, in the other part there was hunger. Both were right next to each other. We apparently tend to get used to this… This is us and that is where the oucasts are. This is what poverty is and the Church needs to increasingly lead the way in rejecting all kinds of worldliness. For us, the consecrated, bishops, priests, nuns and lay people, worldliness is the gravest sin. It is an ugly thing to see a consecrated person, a person of the Church, a nun adopt a wordly attitude. This is not the way of Jesus, of Jesus’ Church. It is an NGO that calls itself a Church, it is something else. The Church is Christ who died and was resurrected for our salvation and the testimony of Christians who follow Christ. Sometimes we priests and lay people cause a scandal, the way of Jesus is difficult. It is true that the Church needs to strip itself bare. I didn’t think about state terrorism, what you said made me think that this kind of waste can also be seen as a form of state terrorism. There really are no caresses: it is like saying: ‘no, not you, get out…’. Here in Rome there was a homeless person who had stomach ache. When he went to the hospital, they gave him an aspirin. He went to a priest who took one look at him and was moved. ‘I’ll take you to the hospital’ he said, ‘but when I explain what you have you pretend you’re fainting’. This is what he did, like an artist, he pulled it off well… It was peritonitis. Had he gone alone he would have been sent away and left to die. That parish priest was clever and gave him the right help, his gesture was worlds away from being worldly. Can this be considered a form of terrorism? It can be…”

The ideological colonisation of the family

“I will only give the example of an experience I had. Twenty years ago, in 1995, a minister of public education asked for a big loan to build schools for the poor (in rural zones, Ed.). They granted the loan on one condition: that schools used a good textbook to teach children. A quality educational school text book on gender theory. This woman needed the money and this was the condition… She was smart; she agreed and she had another book prepared (the second text book taught a different theory and the two books were issued together, Ed.). This is what ideological colonisation is: ideologies enter a population when they have no relevance to that population or they enter groups within that population but they are not with the people and they colonise them with an idea that aims to change a certain mentality or system. During the Synod, African bishops complained that certain loans are only given under specific conditions. The needs of a population are seen as an opportunity to move in and take advantage of children. But this is nothing new. Last century dictatorships did just this, they went in with their doctrine: think of the Hitler Youth… People must not lose their freedom, all peoples have their cultures, their history. When ideas are imposed by colonising empires, the aim is to take away a peoples’ identity… All peoples need to protect their own identity and not succumb to ideological colonisation. There is a book that was written in London in 1903, called “Lord of the World”, by Benson: I recommend it to you. If you read it you’ll really understand what I’m talking about.”

Openness to life

Openness to life is a condition for the sacrament of marriage. Paul VI studied this, he looked at what could be done to help, so many cases, so many problems… important problems that affect family love. But there was something else. Paul VI’s rejection (he rejected contraception in the Humanae Vitae encyclical, Ed.) was not just in reference to individual cases: he told confessors to be understanding and merciful. He was looking at a universal neo-Malthusianism which was calling on world powers to control birth rates: births in Italy dropped to less than 1% and the same in Spain. This does not mean Christians must have one child after the other. I scolded a woman who was on her eighth pregnancy and had had seven cesarians. ‘Do you want your children to become orphans?’ You must not push it with God… What I wanted to say was that Paul VI was a prophet.”

More on contraception

“I believe that three children per family, from what the experts say, is the key number for sustaining the population. The key word here is responsible parenthood and each person works out how to exercise this with the help of their pastor… Sorry, some people think that in order to be good Catholics we have to breed like rabbits, right? Responsible parenthood: this is why there are marriage support groups in the Church with people who are experts on such issues; and there are pastors and I know that there are many acceptable solutions that have helped with this. And another thing: for poor people children are a treasure, prudence is needed here too, it is true. Responsible parenthood is important but also recognising the generosity of that father or mother who see their child as a treasure.”

Freedom of expression and reacting to insults

“In theory we can say that a violent reaction to an offence, to a provocation, is not acceptable, it is not good. We can do what the Gospel says, which is to turn the other cheek. In theory we can say that we understand what freedom of expression is. In theory we all agree. But we are human and there is prudence which is a virtue of human coexistence. I cannot provoke and insult a person continuously because I run the risk of making them angry, I risk receiving an unjust reaction. But it is human. What I am saying is, is that freedom of expression needs to take human nature into account and this means it must be prudent, which is another way of saying it must be polite. Prudence is the human virtue that regulates our relationships. A violent reaction is always bad. But let us hold our horses; because we are human, we risk provoking others. This is why freedom must go hand in hand with prudence.”

Upcoming visits to Africa, Latin America and the US

“Africa: the plan is to go to the Central African Republic and Uganda. I think i twill be toward the end of the year. This visit comes a bit late because of the Ebola problem. Holding big meetings is a big responsibility because of the risk of contagion. But this isn’t a problem in these two countries. US: the three cities are Philadelphia for the meeting of families, New York for the visit to the UN and Washington. I would like to go to California for the canonization of Junípero Serra but I think there is an issue with time, I would need two more days. I think I will do the canonisation in Washington, he is a figure of national importance. Entering the US from the Mexican border would be a great gesture of fraternity but going to Mexico without visiting Our Lady (of Guadalupe, Ed.), that is a tragedy… I think those are the only three US cities I will be visitng. The Latin American countries I am scheduled to visit this year are: Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay. Next year, God willing, I will go to Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.”

Political corruption

“Corruption is very common in today’s world and corrupt attitudes easily worm their way into the institutions because there are many roles within these, many bosses, many deputies… Corruption means taking away from the people. A corrupt person who does corrupt business or governs in a corrupt manner or gets together with others to do corrupt business, steals from the people. The victims are those who live in poverty… Corruption is not closed within itself: it goes out and kills. Now corruption is a global problem. In 2001 I asked the head of the president’s cabinet at the time the following question: ‘tell me, how much of the aid you send inside the country – both the containers, food aid and clothes - reaches its destination?’ The clean man immediately answered: ‘35%’. That was in 2001, in my country.”

Corruption in the Church: they tried to bribe me

“When I speak about the Church I like to speak about the baptised, the faithful and all of us are sinners. But when we speak about corruption, we speak about corrupt people or institutions of the Church that become corrupt. And cases like this do exist. I remember one time in 1994, I had just been appointed auxiliary bishop in the Flores district when two ministry officials came up to me. They said to me: “You are really in need with these poor people… if you want we can help by giving you 400 thousand pesos (400 thousand dollars at the time)… I listened carefully because when you’re offered such a large sum it’s enough to make even a saint think twice. Then they said to me: ‘To make this donation, we will pay a deposit and then you give us half of the money’. At that moment I thought: do I insult them and kick them where the sun don’t shine or do I act dumb? I acted dumb. I said to them: ‘you know… those of us who work in the vicariates don’t have access to the account, you have to pay a deposit to the archbishopric with a receipt.’They left. I thought to myself: if these two landed without asking for a runway (a Spanish expression which roughly translates as “came uninvited” Ed.) – this is a horrible thought – that’s because someone else said yes… Let us remember this: sinners, yes; but corrupt, never! We must ask for forgiveness for those Catholics, those Christians who cause a scandal because of their corruption. There are, however, many saints and saints who are sinners but not corrupt. Let us look at the holy Church.”

JAKARTA: Warning alarms in AirAsia flight QZ8501 were "screaming" as the pilots desperately tried to stabilise the plane just before it plunged into the Java Sea last month, a crash investigator said Wednesday. The noise of several alarms -- including one that indicated the plane was stalling -- can be heard going off in recordings from the black box in the Airbus A320-200's cockpit, the investigator told AFP, requesting anonymity."The warning alarms, we can say, were screaming, while in the background they (the pilot and co-pilot) were busy trying to recover," the investigator said, adding the warnings were going off "for some time".The investigator, from Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC), added that the pilots' voices were drowned out by the sound of the alarms.The revelation came a day after Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said that the plane had climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea, during a flight on December 28 in stormy weather from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore."In the final minutes, the plane climbed at a speed which was beyond normal," the minister told reporters.The plane crashed in shallow waters with 162 people on board, but so far just 53 bodies have been recovered. Committee head Tatang Kurniadi said that the preliminary report into the crash would be completed on Tuesday, a month after the accident. He said the full report would not be released publicly but the media would be told some of its contents.There was a huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China.All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. JAKARTA: Revelations that AirAsia Flight QZ8501 climbed too fast before stalling and plunging into the sea point to "striking" similarities between the Java Sea accident and the 2009 crash of an Air France jet, analysts said Wednesday (Jan 21).Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said the Airbus A320-200 was ascending at a rate of 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) a minute before stalling, as it flew in stormy weather last month from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore."In the final minutes, the plane climbed at a speed which was beyond normal," he told reporters Tuesday. That ascent is about two to three times the normal climb rate for a commercial jetliner, according to experts.Indonesian divers recovered the plane's black boxes a week ago, after an arduous search for the jet that crashed on Dec 28 with 162 people on board. The cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder are now being analysed, with a preliminary report due next week.While they stressed the difficulty of drawing conclusions without seeing the full black box data, analysts said the accident had strong echoes of the crash of Air France flight 447 into the Atlantic in 2009, with the loss of 228 lives."The similarities are pretty striking," Daniel Tsang, founder of Hong Kong-based consultancy Aspire Aviation, told AFP. In that case, the Airbus A330 en route from Rio to Paris vanished at night during a storm. The aircraft's speed sensors were found to have malfunctioned, and the plane climbed too steeply, causing it to stall.As with the AirAsia disaster, the accident happened in what is known as the "intertropical convergence zone", an area around the equator where the north and south trade winds meet, and thunderstorms are common.

'PHENOMENAL' CLIMB

The investigation into AF447 found that both technical and human error were to blame. After the speed sensors froze up and failed, the pilots failed to react properly, according to the French aviation authority who said they lacked proper training.Jonan on Tuesday likened the doomed plane's ascent to a fighter jet, although experts noted that warplanes can climb considerably faster - 10,000 feet per minute when at altitude.However, Tom Ballantyne, Sydney-based chief correspondent for Orient Aviation magazine, said the rate of climb of the AirAsia jet was "just phenomenal", adding: "I'm not sure I've heard of anything that dramatic before."He said it would be unusual for weather alone to cause such a rapid ascent, but added it was possible if the jet hit "some bizarre unprecedented storm cell". "It is possible that the aircraft could have got caught in some sort of updraft that lifted it thousands of feet," he said.However, while saying the rapid ascent showed that there was "something very wrong", Gerry Soejatman, a Jakarta-based independent aviation analyst, added it was too early to have a firm read on the cause of the crash. "Although there are similarities with Air France, and the weather seems to be a factor, we can't make any conclusions that this is caused by the weather or icing - it's too early," he said.Nevertheless, Tsang said the probe was unfolding as analysts had predicted, with no explosions or loud bangs registered on the cockpit voice recorder, and thus no indication terrorism played a role. Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, which is probing the crash, said this week they are now focusing on human or aircraft error as probable causes, after analysing the data from the cockpit recorder.A huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China, finally located the wreckage at relatively shallow depth in the Java Sea.Indonesian search and rescue teams have so far recovered just 53 bodies, but hopes that more victims will be found were raised last week when a Singapore navy ship located the jet's main body, with the airline's motto "Now Everyone Can Fly" painted on the side.However, divers have not succeeded in reaching the fuselage despite several attempts due to bad weather, high waves and strong underwater currents. The world's political and business elite gather for their annual meeting in the glitzy Swiss ski resort of Davos from Wednesday, with the shadow of recent attacks in France and ongoing global conflicts looming large.French President Francois Hollande and US Secretary of State John Kerry will be among the 2,500 movers and shakers thrashing out the burning issues of the day next to the frozen slopes, exactly two weeks after the deadly attacks on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.The bloodshed in France, which left 17 people dead, and Western countries' efforts to prevent returning jihadists planning attacks on home soil will be high on the agenda of the four-day Davos meeting.Alongside top European and US leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel -- whose country recently foiled an attack -- the topic will be broached at a global level with Iraqi leaders including Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and Kurdish leader Massud Barzani.The raging Ukraine conflict will also feature high on the agenda, with President Petro Poroshenko addressing the gathering, after Kiev accused Russian forces of attacking its soldiers in the country's separatist east and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also making the trip up the mountain."Both terrorism and geopolitics are likely to cast their shadows on this year's meeting. PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has rejected the application made by the Roman Catholic Church to re-evaluate the preliminary decision made in June 2014.The decision stated that the church is not allowed to make a plea against the decision made by the Home Affairs Ministry in banning the use of the word “Allah” in its Bahasa Malaysia weekly edition of The Herald.Chief of panel and Federal Court judge, Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong said a re-evaluation could only be made in several circum stances.“Re-evaluation of a judgement could only be made if there appears to be a bias situation, fraud or procedural unfairness and quorum failure in making a decision.“The court has found none of the criteria was met for the judgement to be re-evaluated,” he said at the Federal Court in Putrajaya today.Other judges in the panel are Tan Sri Ahmad Maarop, Tan Sri Hasan Lah, Datuk Ramly Ali and Datuk Azahar Mohamed.The Roman Catholic Church had applied for a re-evaluation of the judgement made by the Federal Court on June 23 which died its application to be allowed to appeal the decision made by the Home Affairs Ministry which prohibited the usage of the word “Allah” in The Herald. Meanwhile, the lawyer of the plaintiff Datuk Dr Cyrus Das said the plaintiffs respected the decision.“To fight for this issue (usage of the word “Allah”) I believe it should be done using other methods,” said Cyrus when met by reporters.
