BRUNEI AND SHARIA LAW-FAREED ZAKARIA GPS

ZAKARIA: Now for our "What in the World" segment. One of the richest nations in the world this week put in place policies that Amnesty International says will take the country back to the dark ages.Where in the world are we? Brunei. The tiny oil rich sultanate on the island of Borneo in the southern regions of the South China Sea. At a ceremony on Wednesday morning, the sultan announced that Brunei's experiment with Sharia law had begun making it the first East Asian country ever to adopt the Islamic penal code. This first phase also fines of jail time if you failed to perform Friday prayers or get pregnant out of marriage among other offenses. In about a year those guilty of theft or consuming alcohol will be punished with a whipping or even amputations. And in two years the death penalty will be implemented for crimes like blasphemy, sodomy or insulting the Quran. Some of the laws would not apply just to Muslims who constitute about 70 percent of the population but also to non- Muslims. The United Nations condemn Brunei's new edict and a spokesman for the High Commission for Human Rights said it contravenes international law.So what is going on? The move towards Sharia comes at a time when energy reserves, the lifeline of the country's wealth, are dwindling. The sultan who also serves as prime minister and minister of defense and finance has stayed in power the usual petro-state way -- bribing his population with subsidies.Bruneians enjoy a lush lifestyle which includes free education and medicine, but over the last few years, Brunei's economy has started to shrink for the first time in decades, according to the Asian Development Bank. And by 2035, net exports of oil and gas will be reduced by almost half, so there are obvious and non-religious forces at work here. Now to be fair, it remains to be seen how the new laws will be implemented and what role the British-based civil legal system will play going forward. To me still, it seems a step or several big steps backwards. But Brunei is certainly not alone in its interesting of Sharia. A handful of countries currently impose the strict Islamic punishments for some crimes including Pakistan and the Maldives. As Noah Feldman pointed out in a terrific "New York Times" magazine article in 2008, the word Sharia is radioactive in many circles especially in the West, but he notes Sharia is extremely popular in parts of the Muslim world. I would argue that this is because it is seen as indigenous to Muslim countries, not an imposition of the West, and was historically associated with high morals and values, as opposed to the brutality of the Arabian desert.ZAKARIA: It is also seen as an improvement over the arbitrary rule of dictators. So when Arabs lived under Western-style military despots like Mubarak and Assad, they would imagine an alternative to it, rooted in their own past, shaped by their own morals and religion."Feldman makes an interesting point. We often ignore the high standards that Sharia law sets. For an adultery conviction to be obtained under Sharia, for example, he says the suspect must confess four times, or four adult men of good character must testify that they witnessed the act in question.Feldman says we also ignore the extremes of our own systems, such as the life sentences that are routinely doled out for relatively minor drug crimes. As he puts it, "It sometimes seems as if we need Sharia as Westerners have long needed Islam as a canvas on which to project our ideas of the horrible and as a foil to make us look good."By the way, one place where American law and Sharia meet is the death penalty, something we were reminded of this week. On Tuesday the cruelest of scenes unfolded at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, where a botched execution left an inmate writhing in agony 43 minutes after receiving what was meant to be a lethal injection. Remember, the United States is the only Western country that retains the death penalty.

“Moderate” Muslims and Hollywood celebs unmasked.

Another moderate Muslim nation is showing its true colors, while the hypocrite liberals show theirs. Brunei is implementing the punitive and anti-human sharia, and the Brunei partying celebs are MIA. Think about it. The entertainment world and the media is exploding with rage at some demented jealous octogenarian’s racist rant to his mixed-race 30-year-old hustler-cum-girlfriend. But a protest against the vicious anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, racist sharia could only garner a dozen protesters at the Brunei US flagship Beverly Hills Hotel. The word for blacks in Islam is “abeed,” or slave. Brunei sultan introduces strict sharia penal code,  April 30, 2014, FoxNews.com.The sultan of Brunei reportedly announced strict Islamic criminal punishments to go into effect May 1.“With faith and gratitude to Allah the almighty, I declare that tomorrow, Thursday 1 May 2014, will see the enforcement of sharia law phase one, to be followed by the other phases,” Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said in a royal decree Wednesday, according to The Guardian. The penalties reportedly will include flogging, severing of limbs and death by stoning. The initial phase introduces jail terms of fines for indecent behavior, failure to attend Friday prayers and out-of-wedlock pregnancies, The Guardian reported. The second phase, which will be implemented later in 2014, includes the stricter penalties for theft and robbery.Death by stoning will be introduced next year for offenses including sodomy and adultery, the report said.Brunei is the first country in east or southeast Asia to implement a sharia penal code on a national level.ByPamela Geller-on April 30, 2014

Girl describes kidnap, 276 still missing-New Straits Times

LAGOS: The girls in the school dorm could hear the sound of gunshots from a nearby town. So when armed men in uniforms burst in and promised to rescue them, at first they were relieved.
“Don’t worry, we’re soldiers,” one 16-year-old girl recalls them saying. “Nothing is going to happen to you.” The gunmen commanded the hundreds of students at the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School to gather outside. The men went into a storeroom and removed all the food. Then they set fire to the room.  “They ... started shouting, `Allahu Akhbar,’ (God is great),” the 16-year-old student said. “And we knew.” What they knew was chilling: The men were not government soldiers at all. They were members of the ruthless Islamic extremist group called Boko Haram. They kidnapped the entire group of girls and drove them away in pickup trucks into the dense forest. Three weeks later, 276 girls are still missing. At least two have died of snakebite, and about 20 others are ill, according to an intermediary who is in touch with their captors. Their plight — and the failure of the Nigerian military to find them — has drawn international attention to an escalating Islamic extremist insurrection that has killed more than 1,500 so far this year.Boko Haram, the name means “Western education is sinful,” has in a video seen Monday claimed responsibility for the mass kidnapping and threatened to sell the girls. The British and U.S. governments have issued statements of concern over the fate of the missing students, and protests have erupted in major Nigerian cities and in New York.  The 16-year-old was among about 50 students who escaped on that fateful day, and she spoke for the first time in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. The AP also interviewed about 30 others, including Nigerian government and Borno state officials, school officials, six relatives of the missing girls, civil society leaders and politicians in northeast Nigeria and soldiers in the war zone. Many spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing that giving their names would also reveal the girls’ identities and subject them to possible stigmatization in this conservative society. The Chibok girls school is in the remote and sparsely populated northeast region of Nigeria, a country of 170 million with a growing chasm between a north dominated by Muslims and a south by Christians.Like all schools in Borno state, Chibok, an elite academy of both Muslim and Christian girls, had been closed because of increasingly deadly attacks by Boko Haram. But it had reopened to allow final-year students to take exams. At about 11 p.m. on April 14, a local government official, Bana Lawal, received a warning via cell phone. He was told that about 200 heavily armed militants in 20 pickup trucks and more than 30 motorcycles were headed toward his town.Lawal alerted the 15 soldiers guarding Chibok, he said. Then he roused sleeping residents and told them to flee into the bush and the nearby hills. The soldiers sent an SOS to the nearest barracks, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, an hour’s drive on a dirt road.

No help arrived.

When the militants showed up two hours after the warning, the soldiers fought valiantly, Lawal said. Although they were outnumbered and outgunned, they held off the insurgents for an hour and a half, desperately waiting for reinforcements. One was killed. They ran out of ammunition and fled for their lives. As dawn approached, the extremists headed for the boarding school. There were too many gunmen to count, said the girl who escaped. So, even after the students realized the men were Islamic extremists, they obediently sat in the dirt. The men set the school ablaze and herded the girl’s group onto the backs of three pickup trucks. The trucks drove through three villages, but then the car of fighters following them broke down. That’s when the girl and her friend jumped out. Others argued, the 16-year-old remembered. But one student said, “We should go! Me, I am coming down. They can shoot me if they want but I don’t know what they are going to do with me otherwise.”As they jumped, the car behind started up. Its lights came on. The girls did not know if the fighters could see them, so they ran into the bush and hid. “We ran and ran, so fast,” said the girl, who has always prided herself on running faster than her six brothers. “That is how I saved myself. I had no time to be scared, I was just running.” A few other girls clung to low-hanging branches and waited until the vehicles had passed. Then they met up in the bush and made their way back to the road. A man on a bicycle came across them and accompanied them back home. There, they were met with tears of joy. “I’m the only girl in my family, so I hold a special place and everyone was so happy,” the girl said. “But that didn’t last long.”  The day after, the Defense Ministry put out a statement quoting the school principal, saying soldiers had rescued all but eight of the girls. When the principal denied it, the ministry retracted its statement. With confidence in the military eroded, the residents of Chibok pooled their money, bought fuel for motorcycles and headed into the dangerous Sambisa Forest. The forest sprawls over more than 23,000 square miles (59,570 sq. kilometers), nearly eight times the size of Yellowstone National Park in the United States, and is known to shelter extremist hideouts. Mutah Buba joined the search party hoping to find his two sisters and two nieces. They got directions from villagers along the way who said they had seen the abductors with the girls on a forest path. Finally, an old man herding cattle at a fork in the road warned them that they were close to the camp, but that they and their daughters could be killed if they confronted the militants. The searchers returned to Chibok and appealed to the few soldiers there to accompany them into the forest. They refused, point blank, Buba said. Parents in Chibok ask why they came within a couple of miles of their daughters, yet the military did not. “What was strange was that none of the people we spoke to had seen a soldier man in the area, yet the military were saying they were in hot pursuit,” said Buba, a 42-year-old drawn home to Chibok by the tragedy from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital 130 kilometers (80 miles) to the northwest. The military says it is diligently searching for the girls, with extensive aerial surveillance. “Every information relayed to security agencies has so far been investigated, including the search of all places suspected as a possible hide-away of the kidnapped girls,” Information Minister Labaran Maku said Friday. Many soldiers have told the AP they are demoralized, because Boko Haram is more heavily armed and better equipped, while they get little more than a meal a day.  Some of the kidnapped girls have been forced into “marriage” with their Boko Haram abductors, sold for a nominal bride price of $12, according to parents who talked with villagers. Others have been taken across borders to Cameroon and Chad, they said.Their accounts could not be verified, but forced child marriage is common in northern Nigeria, where it is allowed under Islamic law but not the country’s Western-style constitution. In the meantime, the parents are frantic. Through sobs and jagged gasps for air, the mother of a missing 15-year-old said she had lost confidence in the authorities. “I am so very sad because the government of Nigeria did not take care of our children and does not now care about our children,” said the mother, who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her daughter. “All we have left is to pray to God to help them and help us.” The mother of six wondered what would happen to her daughter’s lofty ambition to become a doctor. She said the girl spent her time caring for the family, and would cook whatever her mother wanted to eat. “She is my first-born, the best,” said the mother, who broke into a scream followed by wails of sorrow. “What am I to do as a mother?”Spurred by growing national outrage, President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday set up a committee to work out a rescue strategy, and expressed confidence that the military will find the girls. The only way to get the girls back is through negotiation, according to an Islamic scholar who has mediated the release of previous hostages. The scholar, who remained anonymous because his position receiving messages from Boko Haram is sensitive, said the militants are willing to free the girls for a ransom, but have not specified how much. The 16-year-old who escaped keeps thinking of her friends, and wondering why she was able to get away while they are still captive. She is at times afraid and at times angry. “I am really lucky and I can thank God for that,” she said. “But God must help all of them ... Their parents are worrying. Every day, everyone is crying.”  -- AP

THE MISSING PLANE MH370 SITUATION AT 12:03AM TUE MAY 06,2014

MH370: No info on audio tampering, says Hishammuddin-Astro Awani,  | Updated: May 05, 2014-Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein

KUALA LUMPUR: There has been no information that the audio recordings of the final conversations on MH370 were tampered with, said Malaysian acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today.Hishammuddin was responding to a query on allegations that the recordings of what transpired between pilots of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and air traffic controllers, made public in a detailed preliminary report last Thursday, could have been “edited”.“Any documents released... will be open to all sorts of speculation.... in regards to that particular audio. I have had no information that it has been tampered with,” Hishammuddin told a press conference in Canberra.According to an NBC News report, audio experts said there were “at least four clear breaks” in the audio which indicated “strange” edits. The American news agency quoted audio-video forensic expert and registered investigator Ed Primeau and Kent Gibson, a forensic audio examiner with Forensic Audio in Los Angeles. The same report quoted Tom Owen, a consultant for Owen Forensic Services audio analysis and chairman emeritus of the American Board of Recorded Evidence, as saying that edits were to be expected.According to experts quoted in the report, the tapes appear to be recorded by at least two different audio sources, one of which may have been a digital recorder held up to a speaker. However, the analysts also cautioned that their observations don't necessarily imply anything about the investigation into the missing flight. They said the quality and brevity of the interactions between the cockpit and controllers made it impossible to glean any information about the pilots' state of mind before the plane disappeared, or even to determine whether both the pilot and co-pilot were speaking or if just one can be heard.Aside from the audio recordings, the preliminary report released by Malaysian authorities last week included the plane's cargo manifest, seating plan. The report, which admitted that the lack of real-time tracking devices caused "significant difficulty" in the hunt for MH370, also called on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to consider such tracking of passenger airplanes. The same report also revealed that it took 17 minutes for air traffic controllers to realise that Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 had disappeared from their screens - and four hours to launch a rescue operation.MH370 disappeared shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am on March 8, bound for Beijing, with 239 people on board.Investigators believe it was deliberately diverted but say they have not ruled out any possibility.A multinational search was launched to find the missing plane and the focus is now in the southern Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Australia. However, the search to date has yielded nothing.

MH370: Tripartite meeting agrees to send next-of-kin to Perth-Bernama, | Updated: May 05, 2014-Astro Awani

CANBERRA: The next-of-kin of passengers and crew on board the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370 aircraft will be flown to Perth, once any debris related to the aircraft is identified and confirmed. According to an official statement on the Tripartite Meeting in Canberra, Australia, which was made available to Bernama, participating ministers at the meeting had agreed among others, that MAS would be responsible for the travel arrangements."The airline will also retain broad responsibility for their support during the visit, including flights, accommodation, transportation and family support," it said. The arrangement, among others, was agreed in the Tripartite Meeting chaired by Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss in Canberra,  Monday morning as part of an agreed reception programme for the next-of-kin.The meeting was also joined by Malaysia's Acting Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and China Transport Minister Yang Chuantang. The ministers had also agreed that Australia provide support and information to the next-of-kin, in terms of entry requirements to ensure their travel in and out of Australia was well taken care of.China would actively facilitate and support matters relating to the Chinese next-of-kin, said the statement.Earlier, Truss in a press conference after the meeting, explained that the search operation would target the ocean floor of the southern Indian Ocean, which included mapping out its areas. He said that was necessary after failing to detect any debris of the missing aircraft during the aerial, surface and underwater search over the past 59 days.Truss said the ocean floor mapping was expected to take up to six weeks as most of the areas had never been mapped before.

05 May 2014| last updated at 01:57PM-MH370 Tragedy: New equipment could arrive in two month’s time-New Straits Times

CANBERRA: Officials today said it could be up to two months before new, more sophisticated equipment will be in the water to help the search for flight MH370 across what will be largely unmapped ocean floor. The hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared on March 8 carrying 239 people was scaled back last week after coming up with nothing, despite an air and sea search of 4.64 million square kilometres of the southern Indian Ocean.Australia today hosted a meeting in Canberra with the transport ministers of Malaysia and China to determine the way forward, which will focus on an intensified undersea search.China is involved because two-thirds of the passengers were Chinese, while the plane is believed to have gone down in Australia’s search and rescue territory.Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss admitted the hunt will take time, with the ocean bed in the prospective search zone several kilometres deep and largely unmapped, meaning specialist sonar equipment and other autonomous vehicles are needed. He said a tender process would start soon to acquire them, but it would likely be two months before the equipment was actually in the water, while more oceanographic mapping was required to better understand where they would be looking.“We are optimistic that we can do most of this in the space of one to two months so we will actually have more hardware in the water within a couple of months,” he said after meeting Malaysian Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Chinese counterpart Yang Chuantang.“In the interim we’ll still have the Bluefin-21 working and we’ll get going on the oceanographic work that needs to be done so they’ll be no long interruptions in this search.” A submersible Bluefin-21 has been scouring the seabed in an area where undersea transmissions were detected, believed to have come from the plane’s black box flight recorders before their batteries died.It was due back in Perth with the Australian navy vessel Ocean Shield on Monday for maintenance and software modifications before returning to the search zone.Once back in the Indian Ocean it will be joined by a dedicated team of vessels from Australia, Malaysia and China. An Australian P-3 Orion jet will also be available to follow-up any leads.Truss added that international experts will from Wednesday begin re-examining satellite imagery and all the data collated so far, while the Joint Agency Coordinating Centre, which has been organising the search, will be moved from Perth to Canberra. He refused to put a time frame on when the plane might be found.“We obviously have no idea when it’s likely to be found, we just always hope it is tomorrow,” he said.“But so far our very, very best leads, and on days when we were quite confident that it was going to be the day, have all proved fruitless so it would be unduly optimistic to name a day or time.”--AFP

MH370: Old evidence reviewed, new assets needed- Astro Awani | Updated: May 05, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 will on Wednesday hold a meeting with international experts to revisit evidence gathered so far, said Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.Truss spoke about this move to ‘go back to the drawing board’ in a media briefing today on the failed search that has dragged on for almost two months since the disappearance of the flight on March 8.“We would be gathering, analysing, all data and information that we have collected since the beginning of the search,” said Truss. He added that the experts would want to “make sure that satellite information has been accurately interpreted”.Truss said that the review is hoped to bring new leads as experts “extrapolate the hard information we have received”.

New assets needed

Secondly, Truss said, the Wednesday meeting will talk about new assets required for the next part of the investigation.“We need more sophisticated equipment... with different abilities,” he said, adding that the machines needed only exists in the “handful around the world”.The machines, which require sonar capabilities and able to dive to greater depths compared to the Bluefin-21, are needed to map the ocean floor in the remote area where the search for the Boeing 777-200ER is being conducted.“We have no vessels from Australia that is able to map the sea floor,” said Truss. He expressed hope that the “tomorrow” would be the day the doomed aircraft would be found after the giant” search of more than 4 mil sq kilometres in the Indian Ocean so far.To date, he said, the search has been “disappointing” with no trace of any debris linked to the wreckage.“One of the key elements of the next stage is to undertake more detailed oceanographic mapping as much of this area has never been mapped. It requires significant effort for us to understand the terrain. We know the water is very deep,” he said.

'Opportunities' for others to join search

Truss was giving a press briefing in Canberra together with the Transport Ministers from both Malaysia and China, namely Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Yang ChuanTang after a trilateral meeting. Hishammuddin said that the search will now “give opportunities” for other nations, research institutes and private entities to come forward to aid in the search.“I believe we are on the right track. There is a sense of urgency, ” said Hishammuddin.Tang, who spoke in Mandarin, said that that three countries has agreed upon this: “The search will not be interrupted, not suspended, not given up on, and there will be no slack.”“We know clearly that the area is now even broader, and the task is more difficulty and tougher,” he said.

Iranian navy chief: We aim to destroy the US Navy-American warships are easy target, brags Ali Fadavi, claiming his forces could sink a US aircraft carrier in less than a minute-By Times of Israel staff May 6, 2014, 2:44 am 18

The naval commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, said Monday that the destruction of the US Navy is a major operational goal of his forces, an Iranian news agency reported. In an unusually aggressive interview, he was said to have declared that Iran’s navy had been conducting drills on how to sink US vessels in any potential combat, that Iran “naturally” wants to sink these vessels, and that it could sink a US aircraft carrier in less than a minute.“Conducting trainings, exercises and drills to get prepared for operational goals is always on our agenda and Americans and all the world know that one of the operational goals of the IRGC Navy is destruction of the US naval force,” Fadavi said in what the semi-official Fars News Agency called an exclusive interview.US air power totally depends on fighters flying from its aircraft carriers, Fadavi was quoted saying, “hence, that is a natural thing that we want to sink these vessels.”Fars said Fadavi also spoke of the vulnerability of the United States’ giant warships and aircraft carriers, notably in any potential combat against Iranian missiles and speedboats in the Persian Gulf: “If you take a look at [former US defense secretary] Robert Gates’ book, you will see how he counts the vulnerabilities of aircraft carriers to the IRGC Navy and (that’s why) he asks for a change in the US naval strategy. This is no easy task, but they (the Americans) have started doing so as he has emphasized,” Fadavi said.US warships are a very easy target for the IRGC naval force, given that “we have very precise analyses of the design, construction and structures of these warships and we know how to act.”Fadavi said his forces had been conducting routine drills on how to sink US vessels, notably in the Persian Gulf.He confirmed that Iran had produced “replicas of the US aircraft carriers” for IRGC Navy drills, and said American reports on these replicas had dealt with the issue “very simple-mindedly.”Said Fadavi: “They (Americans) know nothing. We have been making and sinking replicas of US destroyers, frigates and warships for long years, and we have sunk the replica of their vessels in 50 seconds through a series of operational measures,” added Fadavi.“We practice the same drills on replica aircraft carriers because sinking and destroying US warships has, is and will be on our agenda,” he stressed.Fars also quoted Fadavi saying the IRGC Navy was one of the only two military forces equipped with a unique torpedo, originally designed by Russia, which travels at 100 meters per second (360km/h) under water. He claimed the US had spent $20 billion over 15 years in a failed bid to develop the same technology. In February, Iranian state TV ran a documentary featuring a computerized video of Iran’s drones and missiles bombing Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ben Gurion Airport and the Dimona nuclear reactor in a hypothetical retaliation for an Israeli or American strike on the Islamic Republic. Iranian drones and missiles were also shown carrying out simulated strikes on the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, downing American aircraft and striking American military targets in the Persian Gulf.

With songs and pageantry, nation transitions from mourning to celebration-Fourteen women representing a broad cross-section of Israeli society light 12 ceremonial torches at Mount Herzl event marking start of 66th Independence Day-By Times of Israel staff May 5, 2014, 7:56 pm 4

Israel crossed over from mourning to celebration on Monday night, as Memorial Day came to a close at sundown and Israel’s 66th Independence Day began.Mourning and somber speeches gave way to fireworks, concerts and parties across the country as the nation transitioned to Independence Day, with flags raising from half-mast back to full.At the country’s military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, an official annual ceremony marked the transition with a speech from Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein and the lighting of torches by 14 women selected by a special committee. The juxtaposition of the two days is a key part of Israelis’ experience of national mourning, ensuring that no commemoration completely excludes the achievement wrought by the sacrifice, and no that the elation of independence is never far removed from an awareness of its cost. The sudden switch is often seen as a difficult transition for bereaved families. Both President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered video messages to diaspora Jewish communities in honor of Independence Day.“The year ahead will present us with many challenges,” said Peres. “The shifting sands of the Middle East generate a sense of insecurity in what tomorrow holds. Change, however, can also present opportunities for new and better prospects that should be seized. With this in mind, Israel strives to become a significant contributor to the development of our region and to the world at large.”Israelis have “ingathered into our homeland a people that had been scattered around the globe,” Netanyahu said in his own message. “We have defended ourselves against the attacks of hostile neighbors, overcoming threats faced by no other country. We have built a vibrant democracy in which freedom is sacrosanct, guaranteeing equality under the law and the rights of every citizen. We have created a robust economy, a global technological superpower. We have signed peace treaties with two of our Arab neighbors, while we quietly talk with many more.”

A time for women

The official Independence Day ceremony on Mount Herzl is placing the accomplishments of Israeli women at the center of the national celebrations. Each year, torch lighters are selected to represent some community or aspect of Israeli society to light 12 symbolic torches representing the 12 ancient tribes of Israel. At the behest of Culture and Sports Minister Limor Livnat, the focus of this year’s ceremony is “A time for women – achievements and challenges.” The 14 torch lighters this year are all women, each with remarkable achievements and an inspiring life story.- Tennis star Shahar Pe’er, Israel’s most successful tennis player ever, once ranked 11th in the world.- Dr. Kira Radinsky, 27, is considered one of Israel’s most promising young scientific minds. Hamas official: Unity deal forbids security cooperation with Israel-Gaza to incorporate 3,000 Palestinian Authority policemen as part of reconciliation, Hamas secretary says-By Elhanan Miller May 5, 2014, 2:34 pm-The Times of Israel

Hamas is preparing to incorporate 3,000 Palestinian Authority security men from the West Bank into its Gaza apparatus, a Hamas official has announced. He also referred to a previously unknown “security clause” in the agreement with Fatah criminalizing security coordination with Israel.Abdul Salam Siyam, secretary general of the Hamas government in Gaza, told Palestinian media that Hamas’s security agencies will remain intact pending the formation of a new unity government in June.“The government and the [Hamas] movement in Gaza have taken a strategic decision to move forward with reconciliation and create necessary conditions for its implementation,” Siyam said in a press statement Sunday.“In [the agreement], there is a clause referring to the security situation with many details, some of which touch on the security doctrine, criminalizing security cooperation [with Israel], and administrative arrangements for the return [to Gaza] of 3,000 security personnel belonging to Ramallah. The security situation in the Gaza Strip will remain as it is in the interim period,” read the statement, published in the Hamas daily Felesteen. The official reconciliation statement published in April made no reference to a “security clause” dealing with PA cooperation with Israel, which has remained tight in recent years. Independent Palestinian businessman Munib al-Masri, a member of the PLO delegation to talks with Hamas, told The Times of Israel that no reference was made to dealings with Israel during the talks.“Anything said by Hamas officials other than [deputy political bureau chief] Moussa Abu Marzouk is not credible,” Masri said. “Don’t believe rumors.”Palestinian security coordination with Israel had been a significant sticking point in relations between Fatah and Hamas prior to the reconciliation agreement ratified by the sides on April 23.On Monday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas met with Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal in Qatar to discuss the details of a unity government, expected to comprise non-politically-affiliated technocrats and headed by Abbas.Ziad Abu Ain, a member of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council, told Hamas daily Al-Resalah that the meeting between the two leaders — the first since January 2013 — is “pivotal and important.”“I hope that the coming hours will bring positive change and effective measures on the ground in implementing the recent reconciliation agreement ” Abu Ain told the daily on Monday morning, ahead of the Abbas-Mashaal meeting.Such measures were indeed underway in Gaza. Jerusalem-based daily Al-Quds reported that Hamas has allowed distribution of the paper in the Gaza Strip effective Monday, implementing the agreement with Fatah on freedom of the press. Ihab Ghosein, a spokesman for the Hamas government, told Al-Quds that a number of political detainees, likely from Fatah, will be released from prison in Gaza in the coming days.Fatah, for its part, seemed less sanguine about the reconciliation with Hamas, with no indication of reciprocal measures regarding press freedom in the West Bank or any immediate release of Hamas detainees.Ahmad Assaf, a spokesman for Fatah, lashed out Monday at unspecified “negative statements by Hamas leaders and spokespeople on Twitter over the past few days,” accusing them in a radio interview of “perpetuating the coup and division mentality.”Assaf referred to a Hamas statement accusing Fatah of ceding 78 percent of historic Palestine to Israel.“The Palestinian people enjoy a strong memory,” the Fatah spokesman was quoted by official Wafa news agency as saying. “They know exactly how Hamas gave up 99 percent of historic Palestine, agreeing to establish its own emirate on the Gaza Strip — which comprises less than 1 percent of historic Palestine — in return for its ability to rule.”

Hamas leader: We’ve never discussed disarmament-Moussa Abu Marzouk says group will never accept Quartet conditions on Israel, nor will it neutralize Qassam Brigades-By Elhanan Miller May 4, 2014, 4:30 pm 1-The Times of Israel

Hamas and Fatah have never discussed disarming Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, nor does Hamas intend to recognize Israel or abide by previously signed agreements, a Hamas leader announced on Saturday.Speaking to the press in Gaza, political bureau deputy chief Moussa Abu Marzouk said that Hamas and the other Palestinian factions have “temporarily” agreed to a Palestinian state on land conquered by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War, “without recognizing the Zionist entity.”The Quartet — an international entity comprising Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations — has demanded that Hamas recognize the State of Israel, abide by previous diplomatic agreements signed by the PA, and renounce violence as a means of achieving goals. Those principles were endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 1850, which was unanimously adopted on December 2008.But Abu Marzouk said that accepting the international conditions was never on Hamas’s agenda.“We have rejected and continue to reject any conditions detracting from Palestinian rights,” he was quoted by Qatari news channel Al-Jazeera as saying. “Hamas will remain loyal to the right of return and to liberation.”Last week, a number of Hamas officials rushed to clarify their movement’s rejection of Israel following indications by PA leaders, including PA President Mahmoud Abbas, that Hamas would abide by previously signed agreements.
Another sticking point in reconciliation between the rival Palestinian factions remains the destiny of Hamas’s security forces in Gaza and its armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which has launched thousands of rockets into Israel in previous years.Abu Marzouk stressed that recent reconciliation talks have not touched on the brigade’s weapons, nor have any previous talks with Fatah, Al-Jazeera reported.Created in 1992, the Izz Ad-Din Al-Qassam Brigades carried out numerous suicide and shooting attacks inside Israel throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, the organization was also instrumental in the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in June 2006.

Why does Israel need a president? 'You must have more than just one person at the top'-Peres: With good will you can achieve peace. With wrong policies, you can postpone it-A final presidential Independence Day interview with that indefatigable optimist, our ‘obedient servant’ Shimon Peres-By David Horovitz May 5, 2014, 7:01 pm 8-The Times of Israel

This is Shimon Peres’s final Independence Day as president of the State of Israel. At 90, he might be forgiven for contemplating something of a withdrawal from public prominence. But he shows no sign of going gentle into that political good night when his seven-year term ends in July. Before he steps down he has several more foreign trips planned, a pope to host, ambassadors and overseas leaders to welcome, judges to swear in, and innumerable events to address. And after he leaves the President’s Residence, he plans to use the platform of his Peres Center for Peace to foster tolerance and cooperation in the cause of regional reconciliation — not in some vague, woolly way, but by utilizing his peerless connections to try to cultivate change. He gives an insight into that kind of activity in this Times of Israel interview when he says he intends to galvanize the international community to press Hamas into recognizing Israel and abandoning terrorism. Impossible, many might say. Naive. Foolish. Peres — and this is clearly one of his abiding key features — is entirely undaunted by dismissive, negative assessments. He says he’s spent a lifetime watching “unbelievable” developments coming to pass.Peres the party politician was a divisive man; Peres the president is overwhelmingly regarded as having been an asset for Israel, at home and, especially, abroad. Those who disagreed with him when he was a prominent figure in Labor and, far more briefly, in the Kadima party, may not have disagreed with him much less as he continued, from his position as president, to extol a vision of potential regional harmony. President Peres remained resolutely unmugged by the bloodiest and bleakest of realities. But there are few, even among those critics, who doubt that his insistence on the possibility of a better future, and his determination to work for it, has been beneficial to his country. To this reporter, over the years (as to much of the Israeli media), Peres has proved both gracious and available. (The latter is a quality — no, a requirement in a democracy — that our prime minister has abandoned.) Also good-humored: At the start of this interview, he took great pleasure in ridiculing my antiquated tape-recording devices, asking if, perhaps, they yield different and more interesting content than do the MP3 digital devices favored by my colleagues. As time has passed, Peres’s voice has softened and his rhetorical flourishes have become more familiar. So, too, his diplomatic positions. The politician who once outflanked his rival-turned-partner Yitzhak Rabin from the right has long since metamorphosed into the most prominent peacenik in a nation that says it wants peace while voting for governments that are disinclined to take risks for the cause. While Israel remains uncertain, Peres is convinced. And since he has failed to win us all over as president, he’ll keep on trying when he steps down.

I don’t think we have that many problems with Abbas

Knowing that this would be my final interview with the serving President Peres was more than a little moving. In a year that also saw the death of Ariel Sharon, the imminent departure from office of this hitherto ubiquitous figure, whose public life has escorted Israel from its first growing pains, truly marks the end of “Modern Israel: The early decades.” And to watch relative mediocrities squabbling over the presidential succession only underlines a certain sense of national orphanhood as this last of the old guard prepares to move on.

The Times of Israel: So how are you going to save the negotiations with the Palestinians?

Shimon Peres: Look, you have to work out what aspect is causing the most delay. In my opinion, today, that’s Hamas. I don’t think we have that many problems with Abu Mazen [PA President Mahmoud Abbas]. Quite the contrary. I can understand why he wants to unify the two camps. The problem is that you cannot unify contradictory forces. It’s either terrorism or peace. You can’t have both. There’s a highly unusual situation at present. Gaza, which is free (of any Israeli presence), supports terrorism. The West Bank, which is not yet entirely free, supports demilitarization. There’s no logic in that. We completely left Gaza. There are no settlements, there are no settlers, there is no army. What else do they want? What do they need 10,000 missiles for? Why are they building tunnels? They’ve got almost 1.9 million people to look after. The people are hungry. The secretary general of the UN calls me all the time asking us to let in wood, concrete. I’m all in favor, but if they use it to build tunnels, that’s crazy. Hamas has to be told (by the world), if you’re a party, you’re a party, but without terrorism, in favor of peace, respecting agreements. If not, then you’re an enemy.
And until then, Israel should not be negotiating with a Hamas-backed Palestinian government?
Our government doesn’t need to take the lead on this. The international community needs to do this.
I’ll tell you a short story. I was one of the deputy presidents of the Socialist International. There were 15 of us, deputy presidents. Fourteeen of them wanted to accept Arafat as a member and I was the only one who was opposed. They treated me fairly. But the trio of leaders — Willy Brandt, Bruno Kreisky and Olaf Palme — said to me, Shimon, you’re a democrat. Fourteen against one. You have to give in. Why are you opposed? I said, why do you say I’m opposed? Not at all. If you can prove to me that Arafat’s a socialist, that he supports peace and rules out terrorism, I’ll vote in favor. And what happened? They left me alone and they went to Arafat. They spoke to him. And it was them, I believe, who wrought the change in Arafat.I expect the same thing to happen with Hamas. Decisions the Israeli government makes aren’t binding on Hamas. But if all governments say to Hamas, listen, if you want funding, you want help, you want development, stop [the terrorism]… Answer the question: Why are you shooting [at Israel]? For what purpose are you shooting? Your friend, someone you trust, Abbas, signed a reconciliation agreement with an unreformed Hamas, however…I’m not at all sure how this is going to play out. This kind of thing has happened several times in the past. I’m not sure it will come to pass this time. But I actually hope it does succeed, since the only way in which it can succeed is if [Hamas abandons terrorism]. All that is asked of Hamas is to do what is normal. I’d like to hear one Hamas leader tell me why they are firing [at Israel]. You wanted us to leave Gaza. We left Gaza. You wanted a free Gaza. Gaza is free. Why are you shooting? Why should one and a half million mothers lose sleep at night because you have a screw loose? But I don’t want it to be Israel that has to say this. I don’t want to get into that argument. I want it to be the world that says it, an international effort. And I intend to devote a great deal of effort to galvanize the world, to make clear that we are not opposed to Palestinian unity, not opposed to people, but we are opposed to murder. It’s unthinkable and it destroys peace. What do you make of Abbas’s condemnation of the Holocaust? I greatly appreciate it. He had a different view in the past? What’s wrong with him changing his mind. It’s the first time Arabs are hearing this from an Arab leader, I believe. So I think it was a good step and I greatly respect it.And what of John Kerry’s warning that Israel risks becoming an apartheid state if no agreement is reached? You know, you can talk of peace in two ways. You can take the negative approach: what will happen if there’s no peace? Or you take the positive approach: what will unfold if there is peace? Personally I tend to stress the positive approach: What will peace bring — for Arabs, Jews and for the Middle East. There is no shortage of positive reasons. Unfortunately what began as discreet negotiations [under Kerry's stewardship] became a public debate. And now the rhetoric has overwhelmed the methodology. I would tone down the proclamations where each side rules out this and that, saying no and no. All these declarations create more extreme positions. I would remind ourselves that peace will offer amazing achievements. I would tell the Arabs that peace will offer amazing achievements. The real problem in the Arab world is that the birthrate has outstripped the growth of industrial production. There is no way to dramatically boost an economy on the ground, only through science. The Arabs have to make a calculation to join the scientific era. We can help them in many ways, and we must help.I see an Israeli interest to separate from the Palestinians. On the Palestinian side, I see the opposite — the people seeking to prevent their leader from compromise. Paradoxically, even separation takes two. You can’t get divorced if one side isn’t willing to. I much prefer living together than living separately. You can’t actually separate. You can’t divide the Jordan and you can’t divide the climate and you can’t divide the pollution and you can’t divide the diseases. It doesn’t work that way. The world is moving away from separation, toward globalization. Because in the scientific era there are no borders. In the scientific era, armies cannot conquer anything. They can’t conquer information.Let me ask you the question differently. It seems to me that the Israelis see self-interest in an agreement with the Palestinians and the Palestinian public does not.I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. People aren’t so knowledgeable about the details. There are general perceptions and those general perceptions are greatly influenced by what is said in public. In the surveys I see, essentially the Arabs want peace and we want peace. And there can’t be a separate peace. Peace needs to be comprehensive. You can’t have a partial peace. You can’t have temporary peace. You can’t have a peace only in certain places. Every people can retain their culture, their identity, their language. That certainly remains, but you can’t put up borders to science.

To say ‘never again’ means you have to make peace

You can’t place red lines. Lenin and Stalin had a red line, and murdered millions of people. Along comes a 27-year old boy, Mark Zuckerberg. No borders. And wrought a revolution. One approach went bankrupt. The other conquered the world. You can’t arrange things differently.Has the Holocaust made us too defensive, too wary, even paranoid when it comes to the security of our state? I don’t think you can generalize about the impact. The one unifying consequence is the insistence: Never again. But to say “never again” means you have to make peace. There are those who say never again means you have to be more forceful. The conclusions are different. And you tend to the less forceful approach? That’s not an inclination. That’s the necessary direction. The world has changed. There are two approaches to leadership — one that is built on force and the other that is built on good will. Good will is winning. Reliance on force is losing. Good will is the global companies that don’t have armies or police forces. They are built on good products and good relations. You can’t be racist. You can’t be nationalistic. You have to be global. What’s the conclusion? That through good will you can achieve more than through bureaucratic administrations… Governments always have to justify their existence and to badmouth their rivals. Companies have to cooperate.

Another Hitler would have a very hard time rising

I take the view that to be generous is smarter than to be cruel. It’s more beneficial to give than to take. America’s greatness lies in what it has given.Where do you place the Iranian threat in that vision of being constructive and generous and full of good will? Look, we’re not sheep to the slaughter. Iran isn’t a country free to get up and do outrageous things. We have ways to prevent outrageous things from happening. And the comparison that some people draw between the Iranian threat and the Nazis? I think another Hitler would have a very hard time rising. Apart from the horrifying genocide that killed six million Jews, he killed another 60 million. To look at the historical perspective, no military victory ultimately prevailed. Only values prevailed. There was 300 years of Ottoman rule here. Then came the British and French empires. What remains of any of that? Then came the Cold War, which was really surreal. The Americans and the Russians spent billions, on what? Now there’s an investigation under way in Russia, on how much they invested in Egypt. About 60 billion dollars, largely in weaponry. Did they win wars? No. Is there a Communist party there? No. It’s banned. So why did they spend all that money?

So many victims. So much money. Enough.

What’s your message for Israel on Independence Day?

We have to conduct our policy of peace in a Jewish way. We have to conduct our future according to Jewish values. This is the greatest strategy.‘Through good will and generosity, although not without strength, you can achieve peace, and by wrong policies you can postpone it’Everybody was born in the image of the Lord, whether you’re an Arab or whether you’re a Jew. Some people say with the Arabs you cannot make peace. Well, what do you know? We made peace with the Arabs. In Jordan there are Arabs. We didn’t make peace with them? We did. With Egypt? We did. Didn’t the Palestinians split — part for peace, part for terror? I believe that through good will and generosity, although not without strength, you can achieve peace, and by wrong policies you can postpone it. And, by the way, in order to achieve peace, the first party you have to convince is your own party. Because your own party says we are for peace, we are ready to pay the price, but why do you pay so much, why are you so naive? Look, what is the alternative? Not to pay? Not to believe? I saw things that at the beginning were considered unbelievable, coming true, like peace with Egypt, like peace with Jordan, like a partial peace with the Palestinians. And we have to go on.

And what do you say to the Jewish world?

We are a united Jewish people spiritually. Our spiritual union kept us together even when we didn’t have an independent state. Now that we have an independent state, we can be more united, without giving up the individual preferences. You know The Times of Israel appears in Arabic now, as well. So a message for the Arab world? There are 350 million Arabs in the Middle East. Sixty percent of them are below the age of 25. Hundreds of millions of them are already connected [to the internet]. I think this is the beginning of the change because if the young generation is connected, like all young generations in the world, they will search for peace and search for answers to their real problems, instead of continuing old images and old mistakes. This is your last Independence Day as president. Does Israel need a president and why? Israel needs a president because I think you need to have more than just one person at the top. One represents the administration, the government. The other represents the people and the mood. One represents the present situation. The other should act for the desired situation.

Advice for your successor?

Pay attention to the culture of the national life. As our sages say, derech eretz kadma l’Torah (roughly: Be a mensch). The president can contribute greatly if he will understand that a president is serving, not ruling. To serve is not less important than to rule.To sum it up with a joke: The British High Commissioner used to sign himself as “your obedient servant.” Once an Israeli official wrote him a letter, addressing it to: “My dear obedient servant.” I suggest that the president be the obedient servant.

forensic experts spotted several irregularities in audio recordings from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which suggested they may have been edited, a United States news network reported.
According to NBC News, the experts said at least two different audio sources recorded the tapes, wherein one of those recordings may have been a digital recorder held up to a speaker. The Malaysian Transport Ministry on Thursday released a 5-page preliminary report on the missing plane along with the audio recording.Analysts who listened to the recordings also told NBC that they noticed four clear breaks in the audio that indicated edits, NBC reported.“It’s very strange,” audio-video forensic expert Ed Primeau of Primeau Forensics was quoted as saying by NBC.“At approximately 1:14... it sounds like someone is holding a digital recorder up to a speaker, so it’s a microphone-to-speaker transfer of that information. That’s a pretty big deal because it raises the first red flag about there possibly being some editing.”Primeau and forensic audio examiner Kent Gibson also pointed out other details to NBC on their suspicions.Gibson said that the tapes indicated that “Malaysian authorities or whoever presented this made edits for whatever reason”.He added that ”it’s not the way to handle evidence,” but it also did not necessarily imply anything about the investigation.“Unfortunately, there are no smoking guns, except there are edits. And there are clear edits,” Gibson was quoted telling NBC.MH370 enroute to Beijing with 239 people from 15 countries on board, disappeared from radar at 1:30am on March 8.A multinational search was launched to find the missing plane. Investigators think it is somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Australia. But so far, all leads and information which have been established through reports and data have yielded nothing. – May 3, 2014.

MH370 Tragedy: Aircrafts return to China following search mission
MAY 4,14-New Straits Times

SUBANG:Two Chinese military aircraft that had helped to search for a missing Malaysian airliner in the southern Indian Ocean flew back to China today from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base here. The IL-76s aircraft of the People's Liberation Army, with 38 crew and military personnel, had conducted the search off the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Pearce in Perth. The planes departed Subang at 8 am and 8.30 am after having flown in to the RMAF base from Australia at 2.45 pm yesterday for refuelling and an overnight rest for the crew and military personnel. The Chinese search team, led by Senior Colonel Liu Dian Jun, returned after it was announced last Monday that the multinational deepwater search for the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight, MH370, had entered a new phase. Flight MH370, with 239 people aboard, left the KL International Airport at 12.41 am on March 8 and disappeared from radar screens about an hour later while over the South China Sea.It was to have arrived in Beijing at 6.30 am on the same day.A multinational search was mounted for the Boeing 777-200 aircraft, first in the South China Sea and then, after it was learnt that the plane had veered off course, in the southern Indian Ocean.-- BERNAMA

MH370: Chinese families head home with hanging grief-Cynthia Ng, Astro Awani | Updated: May 03, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-seven days since the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370, the remaining family members putting up at hotels in Beijing are making their way home after MAS announced that it will shut down its MH370 Family Assistance Centres worldwide by Wednesday."I don't want to leave of course, but I have no choice," Yan Jiacheng told AFP.His 30-year-old son, Yan Ling was one of the 153 Chinese passengers on the flight."The passengers have probably already died. I think so, but I don't dare to tell my family that,” he said upon leaving Lido Hotel for an 800km journey back to his hometown.Lido and Metro Park Hotel in the capital have been the focal point in the MH370 incident where family members gathered and were briefed on updates for the past two months. The hotels also hosted scenes of chaotic clashes from time to time between MAS staff and relatives, desperate for news on the missing airliner.Just over a week ago, frustrated relatives held ten MAS employees in Lido’s ballroom for more than eight hours as they demanded that Malaysian government give a fuller and more transparent account of flight MH370.Tensions have been running high among the Chinese family members over what they deemed as conflicting and incomplete reports shared by the Malaysian government even as the largest search operations failed to yield any sighting of the plane.Dozens of angry relatives of passengers has held protests outside the Malaysian embassy in Beijing. Chinese celebrities too have taken to social media calling for a boycott of all things Malaysian.MAS' latest decision to stop providing accommodation to the relatives sparked fresh anger."I'm very angry," Steven Wang told AFP on Friday."Malaysia Airlines have suddenly told us to leave. They should have at least given us an adjustment period for us to make preparations and collect our things," said Wang whose mother was on the ill-fated flight.MAS Group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement that the airline was advising families to receive information updates on the progress of the search and investigation and other support by MAS within the comfort of their own homes."From past experience, we understand the continuing search and investigation will be a prolonged process," he said. Head of the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) Angus Houston, who is leading the MH370 search, has also warned that the search might take up take up to eight or even 12 months.MAS added that it would keep in close touch with the families on news updates through telephone calls, messages, the internet and face-to-face meetings.Family support centres would be established in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing and the detailed plan of follow-up support and services would be relayed in person to the affected families. Meanwhile, MAS announced it will allocate a sum of money as advanced compensation payment to the next-of-kin of each Chinese passenger, in order to meet their immediate economic needs.MAS today said it has contacted the family members to proceed with the payment.

03 May 2014| last updated at 12:26AM-MH370 Tragedy: Signals based on aircraft projection: MAS-By Rozanna Latiff | news@nst.com.my-New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has clarified that the signals its operations centre received from flight MH370 on the night it went missing were in fact based on aircraft projection, and not on the plane's actual location. In a statement, the airline said after Vietnamese air traffic controllers (ATC) queried its Kuala Lumpur counterparts as to MH370's whereabouts, MAS OPS informed the KL ATC supervisor that MH370 was still sighted over Cambodian airspace in MAS's Flight-Following System."The word “Cambodia” was displayed by the Flight-Following System on the screen when zoomed-in, leading Malaysia Airlines to deduce that the aircraft was flying in Cambodian airspace."The Flight-Following System did not display the name “Vietnam”, even though the aircraft was over Vietnam airspace," said the statement. Questions have been raised on whether the information relayed by MAS OPS delayed emergency search and rescue efforts, which were activated four hours after the plane first lost contact with ATC on March 8.In response, MAS said the responsibility of aircraft tracking monitoring resides with the ATCs."For airlines, it is normal to engage flight following systems to assist its pilots to manage in weather conditions or route diversions. Such airline flight following systems are non-primary and non-positive controlling," the airline said.It also said flight following systems do not indicate if something goes wrong onboard."Such  situations have to be pilot initiated. Unless otherwise, airlines’ operations control centres would continue to see the aircraft as flying on its normal route, based on projected or predicted positions and locations."MAS said to make the flight-following systems work successfully and effectively, it was important to have visual depiction of the aircraft’s position, coupled with confirmation by air-to-ground communications, such as through Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) or satellite communication. In the case of tracking MH370, MAS said its flight-following system indicated that the aircraft was flying. However, there was no communication from the pilots."MAS OPS attempted to communicate with MH370 after we were flagged by KL-ATC, but was never able to make contact."On the cargo aboard MH370, MAS said about 2 tonnes (2,453kg) of cargo was declared as consolidated under one Master Airway Bill (AWB).This Master AWB actually comprised 5 house AWB, out of which two contained lithium ion batteries amounting to a total tonnage volume of 221kg.The remaining three house AWB, amounting to 2,232kg, were declared as radio accessories and chargers.MAS also confirmed that 38 Malaysian were onboard the flight, as listed in the passenger manifest released on Thursday.
