The spooks won’t have to plant a bug in your home, you will be doing it for them.Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,said Petraeus.Soon you will have to live like a reclusive luddite if you hope to escape the new panopticon of surveillance that will be gratefully lapped up by the masses as a necessary sacrifice for convenience and cutting edge technology.
- Google has announced it will use the ambient background noise of a person’s environment, via their cell phone or computer microphone, to spy on their activities in order to direct targeted advertising at them.
- Microsoft X-Box Kinect games device has a video camera and a microphone that records speech. Microsoft has stated that users should not expect any level of privacy concerning your use of the live communication features, and the company may access or disclose information about you, including the content of your communications.
- The latest range of digital televisions also have a built-in HD camera, microphones and facial and speech recognition, which are all connected to the Internet. Companies like Samsung have failed to even craft a privacy policy that applies to the devices, meaning its open season on snooping and data harvesting.
- The modern LED eco-friendly light bulb is also a two-way communications device. Ceiling lights currently being installed in offices and government buildings transmit data to specially equipped computers on desks below by flickering faster than the eye can see.
- Outside street lights are also being changed to new smart versions so they can be used for homeland security applications. These devices are fitted with surveillance cameras, can broadcast government announcements, and also have the ability to record conversations.
- Smart meters, now set to become compulsory in many areas, wirelessly communicate with utility companies details about each home’s energy consumption, as well as emitting electromagnetic radiation. Health concerns have prompted some local authorities to allow residents to opt-out, but in other areas the meters are mandatory.
- Forget the government having to implant a chip in your forehead, the modern smart phone, owned by the vast majority of the population, does just as good a job. Five years ago we warned that the first incarnation of the iPhone contained a backdoor spyware module that allowed hackers or the government to conduct secret surveillance of the user. Cell phone surveillance is now ubiquitous. Google was also recently caught tracking the surfing habits of iPhone users via a code that disables the Safari browser’s privacy settings.
- Google’s attitude towards privacy also came under scrutiny when it was discovered that the company was spying on WiFi network data in violation of the Federal Wiretap Act as it gathered images for its Streetview program.
- The most obvious example of all is the Internet itself. ISPs have announced they will keep records of websites visited for at least 12 months, along with details of private communications. This figure is constantly increasing, with the FBI now pushing for ISPs to retain such information for years.
Since the vast majority of people have already taken the decision to sacrifice their privacy for convenience, all of the technologies listed above will be used to spy on individuals and harvest data which will then be sold to big corporations. The vast majority simply do not care. They value the novelty of a fridge being able to tell you when you’re out of milk and automatically ordering more via the Internet more than they do their own privacy.

1: Rockefeller Foundation Developed Vaccines For Mass-Scale Fertility Reduction
In its 1968 yearly report, the Rockefeller Foundation acknowledged funding the development of so-called anti-fertility vaccines and their implementation on a mass-scale. From page 51 onward we read:(…) several types of drugs are known to diminish male fertility, but those that have been tested have serious problems of toxicity. Very little work is in progress on immunological methods, such as vaccines, to reduce fertility, and much more research is required if a solution is to be found here.The possibility of using vaccines to reduce male fertility was something that needed to be investigated further, according to the Rockefeller Foundation, because both the oral pill and the IUD were not suitable for mass-scale distribution:We are faced with the danger that within a few years these two modern methods, for which such high hopes have been held, will in fact turn out to be impracticable on a mass scale.The possibility of administrating hormone preparations to reduce fertility was also mentioned, although- states the report- they have been known to cause bleeding problems, which may limit their usefulness.A semipermanent or renewable subcutaneous implant of these hormones has been suggested, but whether or not the same difficulties would result has not been determined.Saying that research thus-far had been too low-grade to produce any substantial results, the report was adamant:The Foundation will endeavour to assist in filling this important gap in several ways:
1-Seeking out or encouraging the development of, and providing partial support to, a few centres of excellence in universities and research institutions in the United States and abroad in which the methods and points of view of molecular biology are teamed with the more traditional approaches of histology, embryology,and endocrinology in research pertinent to development of fertility control methods;
2-Supporting research of individual investigators, oriented toward development of contraceptive methods or of basic information on human reproduction relevant to such developments;
3-Encouraging, by making research funds available, as well as by other means, established and beginning investigators to turn their attention to aspects of research in reproductive biology that have implications for human fertility and its control;
4-Encouraging more biology and biochemistry students to elect careers in reproductive biology and human fertility control, through support of research and teaching programs in departments of zoology, biology, and biochemistry.
The list goes on and on. Motivation for these activities, according to the RF?
There are an estimated five million women among America’s poverty and near-poverty groups who need birth control service (…). The unchecked fertility of the indigent does much to perpetuate poverty, undereducation, and underemployment, not only in urban slums, but also in depressed rural areas.It wasn’t long before all the Foundation’s efforts began to have effect. In its annual report of 1988, The RF was happy to report the progress made by the Foundation’s Population Division in the field of anti-fertility vaccines:India’s National Institute of Immunology successfully completed in 1988 the first phase of trials with three versions of an anti-fertility vaccine for women. Sponsored by the government of India and supported by the Foundation, the trials established that with each of the tested vaccines, at least one year of protection against pregnancy could be expected, based on the levels of antibodies formed in response to the immunization schedule.In its 1997 review of anti-fertility vaccines, Indian based International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology didn’t forget to acknowledge its main benefactor:The work on LHRH and HCG vaccines was supported by research grants of The Rockefeller Foundation, (…).In the 1990s the work on anti-fertility vaccines went in overdrive, especially in third-world nations, as did the funding provided by the deep pockets of the Rockefeller Foundation. At the same time, the target-population of the globalists- women- began to stir uncomfortably with all this out-in-the-open talk of population reduction and vaccines as a means to achieve it.Betsy Hartman, Director of the Population and Development Program at Hampshire College, Massachusetts and someone who believes strongly in women’s right to safe, voluntary birth control and abortion, is no supporter of the anti-fertility vaccine, as brought into being by the Rockefeller Foundation. She explains in her essay Population control in the new world order:
Although one vaccine has been tested on only 180 women in India, it is being billed there as ‘safe, devoid of any side effects and completely reversible’. The scientific community knows very well that such assertions are false - for instance, many questions still remain about the vaccine’s long-term impact on the immune system and menstrual cycle. There is also evidence on film of women being denied information about the vaccine in clinical trials. Nevertheless, the vaccine is being prepared for large-scale use.The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, quoted a leading contraceptive researcher as saying:Immunological birth control methods will be an antigenic weapon against the reproductive process, which left unchecked, threatens to swamp the world.Animal rights activist ms. Sonya Ghosh also expressed concerns about the Rockefeller-funded anti-fertility vaccine and its implementation:Instead of giving individual women more options to prevent pregnancy and protect against AIDs and sexually transmitted diseases, the anti fertility vaccine is designed to be easily administered to large numbers of women using the least resources. If administered to illiterate populations the issues of user control and informed consent are further cause for concern.To avoid such debates, the Foundation has in the last couple of decades consorted to its long-practised and highly successful methods of either outright lying through its teeth or using deceptive language to hide the fact that it continues to work tirelessly toward its long-stated mission. 2: Global Distribution of Rockefeller-Funded Anti-Fertility Vaccine Coordinated by WHO
In addition to the recent PrisonPlanet-exclusive Rockefeller Foundation Developed Vaccines For Mass-Scale Fertility Reduction- which outlines the Rockefeller Foundation’s efforts in the 1960s funding research into so-called anti-fertility vaccines- another series of documents has surfaced, proving beyond any doubt that the UN Population Fund, World Bank and World Health Organization picked up on it, further developing it under responsibility of a Task Force on Vaccines for Fertility Regulation.Just four years after the Rockefeller Foundation launched massive funding-operations into anti-fertility vaccines, the Task Force was created under auspices of the World Health Organization, World Bank and UN Population Fund. Its mission, according to one of its members, to support:basic and clinical research on the development of birth control vaccines directed against the gametes or the preimplantation embryo. These studies have involved the use of advanced procedures in peptide chemistry, hybridoma technology and molecular genetics as well as the evaluation of a number of novel approaches in general vaccinology. As a result of this international, collaborative effort, a prototype anti-HCG vaccine is now undergoing clinical testing, raising the prospect that a totally new family planning method may be available before the end of the current decade.In regards to the scope of the Task Force’s jurisdiction, the Biotechnology and Development Monitor reported:
The Task Force acts as a global coordinating body for anti-fertility vaccine R&D in the various working groups and supports research on different approaches, such as anti-sperm and anti-ovum vaccines and vaccines designed to neutralize the biological functions of hCG. The Task Force has succeeded in developing a prototype of an anti-hCG-vaccine.One of the Task Force members, P.D. Griffin, outlined the purpose and trajectory of these Fertility Regulating Vaccines. Griffin:The Task Force has continued to coordinate its research activities with other vaccine development programmes within WHO and with other international and national programmes engaged in the development of fertility regulating vaccines.Griffin also admitted to the fact that one of the purposes of the vaccines is the implementation in developing countries. Griffin:
If vaccines could be developed which could safely and effectively inhibit fertility, without producing unacceptable side effects, they would be an attractive addition to the present armamentarium of fertility regulating methods and would be likely to have a significant impact on family planning programmes.Also, one of the advantages of the FRVs over currently available methods of fertility regulation the Task Force states, is the following (179):low manufacturing cost and ease of delivery within existing health services.Already in 1978, the WHO’s Task Force (then called Task Force on Immunological Methods for Fertility Regulation) underlined the usefulness of these vaccines in regards to the possibility of large scale synthesis and manufacture of the vaccine:The potential advantages of an immunological approach to fertility regulation can be summarized as follows: (a) the possibility of infrequent administration, possibly by paramedical personnel; (b) the use of antigens or antigen fragments, which are not pharmacologically active; and (c) in the case of antigens of known chemical structure, there is the possibility of large-scale synthesis and manufacture of vaccine at relatively low cost.In 1976, the WHO Expanded Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction published a report, stating:In 1972 the Organization (…) expanded its programme of research in human reproduction to provide an international focus for an intensified effort to improve existing methods of fertility regulation, to develop new methods and to assist national authorities in devising the best ways of providing them on a continuing basis. The programme is closely integrated with other WHO research on the delivery of family planning care by health services, which in turn feeds into WHO’s technical assistance programme to governments at the service level.
Although the term Anti-Fertility Vaccine, coined by the Rockefeller Foundation, was replaced by the more bureaucratic sounding Fertility Regulating Vaccine (FRV), the programme was obviously the same. Besides, the time-line shows conclusively that the WHO, UN Population Fund and World Bank continued on a path outlined by the Rockefellers in the late 1960s. By extension, it proves that all these organization are perfectly interlocked, best captured under the header Scientific Dictatorship. The relationship between the WHO and the Rockefeller Foundation is intense. In the 1986 bulletin of the World Health Organization, this relationship is being described in some detail. While researching the effectiveness of gossypol as an antifertility agent, the bulletin states:The Rockefeller Foundation has supported limited clinical trials in China and smallscale clinical studies in Brazil and Austria. The dose administered in the current Chinese trial has been reduced from 20 mg to 10-15 mg/day during the loading phase in order to see if severe oligospermia rather than consistent azoospermia would be adequate for an acceptable, non-toxic and reversible effect. Meanwhile, both the WHO human reproduction programme and the Rockefeller Foundation are supporting animal studies to better define the mechanism of action of gossypol.In August of 1992, a series of meetings was held in Geneva, Switzerland, regarding fertility regulating vaccines. According to the document Fertility Regulating Vaccines (classified by the WHO with a limited distribution) present at those meetings were scientists and clinicians from all over the globe, including then biomedical researcher of the American Agency for International development, and current research-chief of USAID, Mr. Jeff Spieler.
In 1986 Mr. Spieler declared:A new approach to fertility regulation is the development of vaccines directed against human substances required for reproduction. Potential candidates for immunological interference include reproductive hormones, ovum and sperm antigens, and antigens derived from embryonic or fetal tissue.(…). An antifertility vaccine must be capable of safely and effectively inhibiting a human substance, which would need somehow to be rendered antigenic. A fertility-regulating vaccine, moreover, would have to produce and sustain effective immunity in at least 95% of the vaccinated population, a level of protection rarely achieved even with the most successful viral and bacterial vaccines. But while these challenges looked insuperable just a few years ago, recent advances in biotechnology- particularly in the fields of molecular biology, genetic engineering and monoclonal antibody production- are bringing antifertility vaccines into the realm of the feasible.Vaccines interfering with sperm function and fertilization could be available for human testing by the early 1990s, Spieler wrote.In order for widespread use of these vaccines, Spieler writes, the vaccine must conquer variations in individual responses to immunization with fertility-regulating vaccines.Research, he goes on to say,is also needed in the field of basic vaccinology, to find the best carrier proteins, adjuvants, vehicles and delivery systems.In the 1992 document, the problem of variations in individual responses is also discussed:Because of the genetic diversity of human populations states the document, immune responses to vaccines often show marked differences from one individual to another in terms of magnitude and duration. These differences may be partly or even completely overcome with appropriately engineered FRVs (Fertility Regulating Vaccines) and by improvements in our understanding of what is required to develop and control the immune response elicited by different vaccines.The picture emerging from these facts is clear. The WHO, as a global coordinating body, has since the early 1970s continued the development of the Rockefeller-funded anti-fertility vaccine. What also is becoming clear, is that extensive research has been done to the delivery systems in which these anti-fertility components can be buried, such as regular anti-viral vaccines. It’s a mass-scale anti-fertilization programme with the aim of reducing the world’s population: a dream long cherished by the global elite.
3: On Top of Vaccines, Rockefeller Foundation Presents Anti-Fertility Substance Gossypol for Widespread Use
It seems there is no limit to the Rockefeller Foundation’s ambitions to introduce anti-fertility compounds into either existing health-services, such as vaccines, or- as appears to be the case now- average consumer-products.The 1985 Rockefeller Foundation’s annual report underlined its ongoing dedication towards finding good use for the anti-fertility substance gossypol, or C30H30O8 – as the description reads.Indeed, gossypol, a toxic polyphenol derived from the cotton plant, was identified early on in the Foundation’s research as an effective sterilant. The question was, how to implement or integrate the toxic substance into crops.Another long-term interest of the Foundation has been gossypol, a compound that has been shown to have an antifertility effect in men, By the end of 1985, the Foundation had made grants totaling approximately $1.6 million in an effort to support and stimulate scientific investigations on the safety and efficacy of gossypol.In the 1986 Rockefeller Foundation annual report, the organization admits funding research into the use of fertility-reducing compounds in relation to food for widespread use:
Male contraceptive studies are focused on gossypol, a natural substance extracted from the cotton plant, and identified by Chinese researchers as having an anti-fertility effect on men. Before widespread use can be recommended, further investigation is needed to see if lowering the dosage can eliminate undesirable side-effects without reducing its effectiveness as a contraceptive. The Foundation supported research on gossypol’s safety, reversibility and efficacy in seven different 1986 grants.
In the RF’s 1988 annual report, gossypol as a contraceptive was also elaborated upon (page 22):Gossypol, a natural substance found in the cotton plant, continues to show promise as an oral contraceptive for men. Because it suppresses sperm production without affecting sex hormone levels, it is unique among the experimental approaches to fertility control in men. Foundation-funded scientists worldwide have assembled an aray of information about how gossypol works, and studies continue on a wide variety of its clinical applications. Dose reduction is being investigated to reduce health risks associated with the use of gossypol.The following year, according to the annual report, funds were allocated to several research institutions to see how this dose reduction could best be accomplished without interfering with the ant-fertility effects of gossypol.(1988- $ 400,000, in addition to remaining funds from prior year appropriations) To support research on gossypol, its safety, reversibility, and efficacy as a contraceptive for use by men (…).Mention is made on money allocated to the University of Texas, for a study of gossypol’s effects on DNA replication (…).The last mention of gossypol in the Foundation’s annals we find in the 1994 annual report, where funds were appropriated to the University of Innsbruck of Austria for a study at the Institute of Physiology on the molecular action of gossypol at the cellular level.It seems that the funded scientists have indeed found a way of “lowering the dosage” of gossypol, circumventing the toxicity of the substance, so as to suppress or even eliminate these undesirable side-effects, which include: low blood potassium levels, fatigue, muscle weakness and even paralysis. If these effects could be eliminated without reducing the anti-fertility effects, the Foundation figured, it would be a highly effective and almost undetectable sterilant.
Although overtly, research into and development of gossypol as an anti-fertility compound was abandoned in the late 1990s, the cottonseed containing the substance was especially selected for mass distribution in the beginning of the current decade. Around 2006 a media-campaign was launched, saying the cottonseed could help defeat hunger and poverty.In 2006, NatureNews reported that RNA interference (or RNAi) was the way to go. On the one hand it would cut the gossypol content in cottonseeds by 98%, while leaving the chemical defenses of the rest of the plant intact.Furthermore, the article quoted Dr. Deborah P. Delmer, the Rockefeller Foundation’s associate director of food security, who was quick to bury any concern:
Deborah Delmer, associate director of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York City and an expert in agricultural food safety, points out that a benefit of using RNAi technology is that it turns off a gene process rather than switching on a novel function. So instead of introducing a new foreign protein, you’re just shutting down one process,Delmer says.In that sense, I think that the safety concerns should be far less than other GM technologies.A 2006, National Geographic article Toxin-Free Cottonseed Engineered; Could Feed Millions Study Says, quotes the director of the Laboratory for Crop Transformation (Texas A&M Universtity), Keerti Singh Rathore as saying:A gossypol-free cottonseed would significantly contribute to human nutrition and health, particularly in developing countries, and help meet the requirements of the predicted 50 percent increase in the world population in the next 50 years.Rathore’s study, states the article, represents the first substantiated case where gossypol was reduced via genetic engineering that targets the genes that make the toxin.I bring into recollection the statement made by the Rockefeller Foundation in its 1986 annual report, which reads:Before widespread use can be recommended, further investigation is needed to see if lowering the dosage can eliminate undesirable side-effects without reducing its effectiveness as a contraceptive.In the 1997 Foundational report, Rathore is mentioned (page 68). A postdoctoral fellowship-grant was given to a certain E. Chandrakanth for advanced study in plant molecular biology under the direction of Keerti S. Rathore, Laboratory for Crop Transformation, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.Compromising connections, in other words, for someone who claimed academic objectivity in regards to gossypol and its sterilizing effects. Weaver, who describes himself as a great personal friend of Mason, gives a general description of him as Rockefeller-minion:He had by that time developed a consuming interest in behavioral research, and particularly in the possibility that the physical sciences, working with and through the biological sciences, could shed new and revealing light on the normal and abnormal behavior of individuals, and ultimately on the social behavior of groups of men.Here we have it. The blueprint for sterilizing vaccines has been first conceptualized way back in the 1920s and 1930s by social scientists of the Rockefeller Foundation. Although later the eugenic language (anti-fertility vaccine) was polished up with the help of some linguistic plastic surgery producing the term immunological contraceptive, the ultimate goal remains the same.

BRUSSELS - Member states will pay 50 percent less into the general EU budget by 2020 if they agree to implement a financial transactions tax (FTT), the EU commission said Thursday (22 March).In a last-ditch attempt to undermine government opposition to both this specific Robin Hood levy and the general idea of Brussels raising taxes, EU budget commissioner Janusz Lewandowski put some concrete savings figures on the table.By the commission's estimate, Germany would pay €10.7 billion less to the EU budget by 2020, Poland €1.8 billion, Italy €6.4 billion and Latvia €81 million. The UK, the Netherlands and Sweden - the strongest opponents of the FTT - would save €7.6bn, €2.6bn and €1.6bn respectively.By 2020, total savings would amount to €81 billion.Of this money - raised through a 0.1 percent tax on stock and bond trades and 0.01 percent on derivatives - one third would go to national budgets and two thirds (€54 billion) to the EU budget.The transaction tax was core to the commission proposal for the next multi-annual budget (2014-2020) unveiled in June last year.

The UK was quick to release a statement saying it completely refute(s) the suggestion that it would benefit from an EU transactions tax.With the budget to be agreed by the end of the year, the overall debate is beginning to heat up.A group of nine member states has said it wants to press ahead with the FTT on its own (which would remove it from the commission's grasp) while Germany and the UK and others have said the budget should not increase beyond inflation.But the budget negotiations contain an extra twist. The European Parliament will play a stronger role.MEPs are keen on the financial transaction tax, keen on supporting growth policies and keen on spending more. Last year, the parliament approved a report calling for a 5 percent increase in the next multi-annual fund.Parliament chief Martin Schulz indicated his institution will play tough on the negotiation. The EU assembly will not accept a smaller budget, he said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The EU is to add the Syrian leader's wife, mother, sister and sister-in-law to its blacklist at a foreign minister's meeting in Brussels on Friday (23 March), diplomatic sources say.The new visa ban and asset freeze also covers eight members of President Bashar Assad's government and two oil firms.Opposition groups, such as the Syrian National Council (SNC), want much more.SNC spokesman, Radwan Ziadeh, told EUobserver that Nato should launch air-strikes against Assad's tanks, enforce a no-fly zone and create humanitarian safe havens. What is happening [in Syria] is a new Sarajevo, a new Bosnia, he said, referring to Balkan massacres in the 1990s.There is no chance of that, however.The military option would rely on Nato member and Syria neighbour Turkey. BRUSSELS - The European Commission is on Wednesday (28 March) set to propose a European Cybercrime Centre in a bid to tackle rising levels of online crime across Europe.The agency, which is expected to open in 2013, will also be responsible for training national experts on cyber crime and form part of the EU police agency Europol.The EU executive sees the cybercrime centre as the focal point in co-ordinating national cyber authorities established by member states, and pooling information gathered by national and European police IT networks, in an attempt to map organised crime online, especially online fraud schemes.The cybercrime centre, which the Commission first mooted in its 2010 Internal Security Strategy, is the latest EU move to combat cybercrime.MEPs and member states are currently finalising a directive on attacks against computer networks, which is set to criminalise the sale, production and use of botnets, networks of infected computers that can be remotely controlled to launch large-scale coordinated cyberattacks.Meanwhile, the 2011 Directive on combating the sexual exploitation of children online and child pornography is also under discussion.
Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes earlier this week told a meeting of cybersecurity experts that the Commission would also present a European internet security strategy in autumn.To be drawn up by Kroes, her home affairs colleague Cecilia Malmstrom and EU Foreign affairs chief Cathy Ashton, it will focus on co-operation between member states and the private sector.Kroes wants beefed up cyber oversight. She said that the obligation to notify security breaches to government, which currently applies to telecoms companies, should be extended to companies in the energy, water, finance and transport sectors. Meanwhile, the EU budget should provide funding for security technologies.Although the total cost of cybercrime is unknown, the most recent estimate by online security provider McAfee suggested global corporate losses amounted to €750 billion a year. Meanwhile the volume of cyberattacks – with over 150,000 viruses in circulation and 148,000 computers compromised per day – places an impossible burden on law authorities.Kroes noted that estimates made at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January put the likelihood of a major breakdown of the global computer network over the next decade at ten percent.

EU countries to reduce dependence on US military

BRUSSELS - European defence ministers endorsed plans on Thursday (22 March) to develop air-to-air refuelling capabilities and field hospitals in a bid to reduce military costs.Pooling demand, as lessons learned from former joint off-the-shelf procurements, indicates savings ranging as from 20 percent, said French official Claude-France Arnould, the head of the European Defence Agency (EDA), the research wing of the EU diplomatic service.Collectively, the EU spends some €200 billion on defence annually. But austerity measures are forcing ministers to rethink how to best use assets and upgrade capability. The past decade has seen at least a 15 percent drop in EU defence budgets.Austerity is a challenge we cannot duck, we must confront and overcome. The only way is through co-operation,said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton at an EDA conference in January.The EU-led Nato operation in Libya last year also exposed hardware and technology deficiencies in the EU military. Nato commander Marcel Druart told the European Parliament earlier in the week that the success of the Libya operation depended largely on US military input.
EU countries in Nato relied heavily on US technology to co-ordinate the offensive. The Americans monitored airspace and ground movement, making it possible for EU jet fighters to strike pre-designated targets.Gaps in the EU military were already identified in Afghanistan. The former US defence minister Robert Gates last year said Europe's lack of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets rendered even Europe's most advanced jet fighters useless.In Libya, the US was also instrumental in air-to-air refuelling. The EU now wants the same or similar capability. The EU defence ministers said developing air-to-air refuelling has become a matter of priority.The pressure for Europe to enhance its own military is also coming from Washington. President Barack Obama last year announced a new military strategy that shifts focus away from Europe and onto China, North Korea, and Iran - the so-called Pacific Century.Previous calls by the US for Europe to become more independent militarily have not always been heeded, according to the EDA.

As activists are planning to lead a Global March to Jerusalem next Friday, Israel has warned neighboring countries that it would forcefully respond to attempted breaches of its borders.The Global March to Jerusalem initiative aims at getting over one million Arabs and their supporters to attempt to infiltrate Israel’s borders on March 30th. A spokesman for the march said last week the initiative demand[s] freedom for Palestine and its capital Jerusalem.The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) has presented information that Iran is behind the initiative and openly supports it. The march has also been endorsed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was U.S. President Barack Obama's pastor for 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.Diplomatic sources told the London-based Asharq Alawsat newspaper on Friday that Israel has sent messages to the governments of Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, the Hamas government in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority regarding the planned march.The report said that in the messages Israel made it clear that anyone who will come near its borders would be considered an infiltrator and the IDF will act against him with full force.Israel also reportedly demanded that Arab countries not allow an escalation of the tension in the region through marches toward its borders.Channel 10 News, which cited the Asharq Alawsat report, said that the Israeli Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister's Office refused to comment on the report.
Earlier this week, radio host Aaron Klein of WABC radio in New York offered $50,000 to an organizer of the Global March to Jerusalem, if he could name one city in the Middle East, outside of Israel, that has more freedom than Jerusalem. Syria rebel hubs hit as envoy arrives in Russia

As speculation continues about whether Israel, with our without the United States, will launch a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, an Iranian website described how the Islamic Republic would repulse a ground attack against it.The report on the website was translated into English by t he Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).On March 15 the website Mashreq News, which is close to security circles in Iran, cited statements by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Al-Qods Forces commander Qassem Suleimani, who tauntingly declared at a March 13 ceremony that his regime's military forces will work determinedly, with honor and national force, and will demonstrate their zeal in facing any blind attack from the enemy.The statement elaborated on Suleimani’s remarks, describing in detail how the IRGC would repel a ground attack on Iran, including a list of the means of warfare it would use.According to the website, the account is based on the IRGC's latest military maneuvers in eastern Iran and assumes that the country would be invaded from the east. The maneuvers included mechanized infantry, armored forces, helicopters and concealed forces.MEMRI’s analysis noted that what is remarkable about this article is that, while all assessments and predictions published in the media in recent months have envisioned a surgical Western air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, Mashreq discussed an extensive ground attack in eastern Iran, stressing the country's ability to repel such an attack by listing the weapons systems in its possession.
The article is presumably intended to calm the fears of Iran's citizens over a potential strike against the country. However, beyond the failure to address the most plausible threat of an air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, the outdated military equipment attributed to the IRGC may indicate Iran's military inferiority, at least in terms of its ground capability, MEMRI notes.The article’s main points, as outlined by MEMRI, is that the IRGC forces will use remotely operated and controlled equipment, such as smart mines and anti-personnel bounding mines that have been modified to combat enemy vessels.IRGC forces will use a combined force of T-72 tanks and troops equipped with semi-heavy arms and rocket launchers. The tanks will be concealed underground and will be capable of deploying quickly from their hiding places to overtake the enemy and destroy its targets, as simulated in recent IRGC maneuvers.According to Mashreq, the tank's 125-millimeter, automatic loading 2A46M cannon and its extremely lethal weaponry, the APFSDS (armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot), will be highly effective in destroying or disabling enemy tanks.The IRGC forces will also employ BMP-2 armored personnel carriers (APCs), which carry a 30-millimeter automatic cannon and launchers for Soviet made AT-5 and AT-4 second generation wire-guided antitank missiles. The APCs are equipped with an Iranian-made Tousan missile and also feature defense systems against chemical, biological, and radiological WMDs, and a masking system to evade enemy laser-guided missiles.The website explained that all these assets can evade enemy detection with stealth abilities, including reducing their heat and radar signatures.Mashreq explained that during the recent maneuvers, the IRGC forces were assisted by light motorcycle units armed with light and semi-heavy weapons, such as shoulder-fired and surface-to-air missiles. These units, which conceal themselves in different areas, emerge from hiding at the appropriate time, surprise the enemy, and are expected to inflict heavy losses.Aerial support for the troops will be provided by (Bell AH-1) Cobra and Mil Mi-17 helicopters, Mashreq said. The Cobra attack helicopters will provide aerial support for ground troops. They are armed with 20-millimeter cannon, Haidar-70 (sic.) rockets, and a new generation of Toophan missiles that can be used to attack the enemy from a distance of several kilometers.
The Mil Mi-17 helicopters, which can carry some 30 soldiers, will be used for quick transport, and possess significant firepower thanks to their ability to carry six medium-range rockets on each side as well as semi-heavy machine guns.The website also noted that the recent maneuvers included simulating the defense of ground units from aerial attack. This defense was provided by shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and SAM-6 anti-aircraft missile systems, and by artillery mounted on tanks and APCs, which is expected to provide a maximal effective aerial coverage of two-and-a-half to three kilometers.The SAM-6 missile system tested in these maneuvers is expected to overcome enemy aircraft. Now, the event’s organizers, Majlis Speaker Hossein Sheikh-ol-Eslam and Salim Ghafouri, have ordered the community to send a Jewish delegation to march with the Islamist groups in Lebanon, debkafile’s Iranian sources disclose.The delegations are scheduled to mass on the Lebanese and Jordanian borders with Israel and at West Bank and Gaza checkpoints on March 30, when Israeli Arabs mark Earth Day every year.Iran’s ancient Jewish community of around 15,000 souls (9,000 in Tehran, 4,000 in Shiraz and 1,300 in Isfahan) has been living in fear of reprisals should Israel or the United States carry out a military operation against the country’s nuclear facilities. Now, they face a fresh danger of murder and abduction by Hizballah and Palestinian gunmen and terrorists in Lebanon.
Jewish communal leaders were instructed by the Iranian authorities this week to have at least 10 young men aged 18 to 22 ready for the march. They were to be given the honor of acting as vanguard for breaking through the Lebanese-Israeli border fence and leading a mass incursion across the border.

Syrian tanks enter northern town, Homs pounded again

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian forces pounded the central city of Homs with mortar fire while troops backed by heavy armor stormed rebellious towns across the country on Saturday, leaving six civilians and four soldiers dead, opposition activists said.
Ignoring a U.N. Security Council call for an end to hostilities, President Bashar al-Assad's forces clashed with rebel fighters and bombarded several towns and cities, aiming to crush a year-long uprising against the government.Security forces killed at least one person as they raided Saraqib, in Idlib province bordering Turkey, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).There are dozens of tanks and armored vehicles storming Saraqib now and there is heavy artillery fire, said activist Manhal from Idlib province via Skype.A portion of the rebels have made a strategic retreat, but there are rebel forces still inside, and about a third of residents have fled the town, he added.Two died in Homs, the epicenter of the anti-Assad revolt, as the central city suffered another day of what activists said was indiscriminate gunfire and shelling on residential areas.The shelling started like it does every morning, for no reason. They are using mortar and tank fire on many neighborhoods of old Homs, an activist in Homs's Bab Sbaa neighborhood told Reuters by Skype, adding most residents in the area had fled to safer districts and many were trying to get out of the city altogether.The Free Syrian Army had been in Bab Sbaa when the army started shelling the area four days ago and they weren't able to block the army raids because they were getting hit by mortars at the same time that armored vehicles were coming in, he said.We only have a few rebels here left, there is nothing they can do.

Mortars and heavy artillery fire reportedly hitting the city of Qusair, in Homs province, killed two civilians according to the SOHR, which has a network of contacts across Syria.In the southern province of Deraa, birthplace of the revolt, SOHR said a man was shot dead at a checkpoint in an area where security forces were raiding towns after a soldier was killed at a checkpoint. Three other soldiers were killed in a rebel attack in the northeastern province of Hasaka, it said.Independent verification of the reports is impossible because the Syrian authorities have barred access to foreign journalists and human rights workers.Activists in the towns of Douma, near the capital Damascus, reported hearing explosions from heavy fighting overnight as ambulances raced through the city. By late morning they said the fighting had eased and reported seeing armored vehicles and snipers deployed through the city.Army forces were also bombarding the town Qalaat al-Madyaq, close to Hama, with heavy artillery and mortar fire. They have been trying to storm the city for two weeks, the SOHR said, but have met stubborn resistance from rebel forces.More than 8,000 people have died in the uprising, according to U.N. figures. SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Saturday it will hold a special parliamentary session next month during which the reclusive country's new young leader, Kim Jong-un, is expected to be given a top title aimed at consolidating his grip on power.The North has planned a series of events next month to mark the centenary of the birth of the state's founder, Kim Il-sung, including a rare ruling party conference and the controversial launch of a ballistic rocket it says will carry a satellite.Experts say the young Kim, believed to be in his mid to late 20s, could be given two of the countries' senior most titles during the celebrations -- secretary general of the party and chairman of the defense commission.The North's state media said on Saturday the Supreme People's Assembly, which has the formal mandate to appoint the chief of the National Defence Commission, the state's supreme military body, would meet on April 13.The Workers' Party conference is also scheduled for the middle of next month.The young Kim's appointment to the top posts would cement his position as paramount leader and ease lingering fears of a power struggle plunging the country into turmoil.Kim took power after his father died in December and many analysts had feared a chaotic succession.The young Kim only holds a military post in the ruling party. ROCKET LAUNCH WARNING
The United States has warned that the North's rocket launch next month will impact an area between Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, an Australian newspaper reported on Saturday.The Sydney Morning Herald said that U.S. envoy Kurt Campbell on Friday briefed Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr on the ballistic missile's southward trajectory from a North Korean launch pad.If the missile test proceeds as North Korea has indicated, our judgment is that it will impact in an area roughly between Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, the paper quoted Campbell, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, as saying.We have never seen this trajectory before. We have weighed into each of these countries and asked them to make clear that such a test is provocative and this plan should be discontinued.The North has said the rocket's trajectory will be southwards and that will not impact neighboring countries.North Korea wants to use the celebrations around Kim Il-sung's birthday on April 15 to showcase its emergence as a strong and prosperous nation, even as millions go hungry and it begs for international aid.
Its vow to fire a rocket carrying a working satellite has put in jeopardy a deal struck in February with the United States to get food aid in return for a moratorium on long-range missile and nuclear tests.The North's Foreign Ministry warned that it was intolerable double standards for some countries to assert that the North was the only nation not allowed to launch satellites while for the same countries, satellite launches were commonplace.If there will be any sinister attempt to deprive the (North) of its independent and legitimate right and put the unreasonable double standards upon it, this will inevitably compel the (North) to take countermeasures, the ministry said in a statement late on Friday.
PHILIPPINES ON ALERT
An Australian foreign ministry official told Reuters Canberra has expressed concern about the flight path which suggest a southerly trajectory for the missile, with booster rockets landing in the Yellow Sea and off the coast of the Philippines.
Philippine Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said this week the North's launch was unacceptable, and that it was relying on U.S. help to track it. Indonesia has also condemned it.North Korea has conducted two similar launches. The last one, in 2009, provoked outrage in Tokyo because the rocket flew over Japan. As it did three years ago, Japan says it is prepared to shoot the rocket down if it threatens its territory.The rocket launch, which the United States and other countries say is the same as a ballistic missile test, is banned under U.N. resolutions.Even China, North Korea's main ally, has expressed its worry over the launch, scheduled for between April 12 and April 16, and has urged the North to stay calm and exercise restraint and avoid escalation.The secretive North has twice tested a nuclear device, but experts doubt whether it yet has the ability to miniaturize an atomic bomb to fit inside a warhead.The North's rocket launch is expected to be one of main issues up for discussion when about 50 world leaders gather in Seoul on Monday for Nuclear Security Summit. BRUSSELS - Member states will pay 50 percent less into the general EU budget by 2020 if they agree to implement a financial transactions tax (FTT), the EU commission said Thursday (22 March).In a last-ditch attempt to undermine government opposition to both this specific Robin Hood levy and the general idea of Brussels raising taxes, EU budget commissioner Janusz Lewandowski put some concrete savings figures on the table.By the commission's estimate, Germany would pay €10.7 billion less to the EU budget by 2020, Poland €1.8 billion, Italy €6.4 billion and Latvia €81 million. The UK, the Netherlands and Sweden - the strongest opponents of the FTT - would save €7.6bn, €2.6bn and €1.6bn respectively.By 2020, total savings would amount to €81 billion.Of this money - raised through a 0.1 percent tax on stock and bond trades and 0.01 percent on derivatives - one third would go to national budgets and two thirds (€54 billion) to the EU budget.The transaction tax was core to the commission proposal for the next multi-annual budget (2014-2020) unveiled in June last year.

BRUSSELS - The EU is to add the Syrian leader's wife, mother, sister and sister-in-law to its blacklist at a foreign minister's meeting in Brussels on Friday (23 March), diplomatic sources say.The new visa ban and asset freeze also covers eight members of President Bashar Assad's government and two oil firms.Opposition groups, such as the Syrian National Council (SNC), want much more.SNC spokesman, Radwan Ziadeh, told EUobserver that Nato should launch air-strikes against Assad's tanks, enforce a no-fly zone and create humanitarian safe havens. What is happening [in Syria] is a new Sarajevo, a new Bosnia, he said, referring to Balkan massacres in the 1990s.There is no chance of that, however.The military option would rely on Nato member and Syria neighbour Turkey. He looted enough Syrian money to also buy a huge property in Puerto Banus, on Spain's Costa del Sol.EU diplomats say he has not broken any British or French laws and that he is a non-story because he is so toxic in Syria that he could never make a political come-back.But the SNC's Ziadeh said EU countries should blacklist him for past crimes to show Syrian people they are serious about setting things straight. Commission keen to create EU cybercrime centre

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is on Wednesday (28 March) set to propose a European Cybercrime Centre in a bid to tackle rising levels of online crime across Europe.The agency, which is expected to open in 2013, will also be responsible for training national experts on cyber crime and form part of the EU police agency Europol.The EU executive sees the cybercrime centre as the focal point in co-ordinating national cyber authorities established by member states, and pooling information gathered by national and European police IT networks, in an attempt to map organised crime online, especially online fraud schemes.The cybercrime centre, which the Commission first mooted in its 2010 Internal Security Strategy, is the latest EU move to combat cybercrime.MEPs and member states are currently finalising a directive on attacks against computer networks, which is set to criminalise the sale, production and use of botnets, networks of infected computers that can be remotely controlled to launch large-scale coordinated cyberattacks.Meanwhile, the 2011 Directive on combating the sexual exploitation of children online and child pornography is also under discussion.
Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes earlier this week told a meeting of cybersecurity experts that the Commission would also present a European internet security strategy in autumn.To be drawn up by Kroes, her home affairs colleague Cecilia Malmstrom and EU Foreign affairs chief Cathy Ashton, it will focus on co-operation between member states and the private sector.Kroes wants beefed up cyber oversight. She said that the obligation to notify security breaches to government, which currently applies to telecoms companies, should be extended to companies in the energy, water, finance and transport sectors. Meanwhile, the EU budget should provide funding for security technologies.Although the total cost of cybercrime is unknown, the most recent estimate by online security provider McAfee suggested global corporate losses amounted to €750 billion a year. Meanwhile the volume of cyberattacks – with over 150,000 viruses in circulation and 148,000 computers compromised per day – places an impossible burden on law authorities.Kroes noted that estimates made at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January put the likelihood of a major breakdown of the global computer network over the next decade at ten percent.

EU countries to reduce dependence on US military

BRUSSELS - European defence ministers endorsed plans on Thursday (22 March) to develop air-to-air refuelling capabilities and field hospitals in a bid to reduce military costs.Pooling demand, as lessons learned from former joint off-the-shelf procurements, indicates savings ranging as from 20 percent, said French official Claude-France Arnould, the head of the European Defence Agency (EDA), the research wing of the EU diplomatic service.Collectively, the EU spends some €200 billion on defence annually. But austerity measures are forcing ministers to rethink how to best use assets and upgrade capability. The past decade has seen at least a 15 percent drop in EU defence budgets.Austerity is a challenge we cannot duck, we must confront and overcome. The only way is through co-operation,said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton at an EDA conference in January.The EU-led Nato operation in Libya last year also exposed hardware and technology deficiencies in the EU military. Nato commander Marcel Druart told the European Parliament earlier in the week that the success of the Libya operation depended largely on US military input.
EU countries in Nato relied heavily on US technology to co-ordinate the offensive. The Americans monitored airspace and ground movement, making it possible for EU jet fighters to strike pre-designated targets.Gaps in the EU military were already identified in Afghanistan. The former US defence minister Robert Gates last year said Europe's lack of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets rendered even Europe's most advanced jet fighters useless.In Libya, the US was also instrumental in air-to-air refuelling. The EU now wants the same or similar capability. The EU defence ministers said developing air-to-air refuelling has become a matter of priority.The pressure for Europe to enhance its own military is also coming from Washington. President Barack Obama last year announced a new military strategy that shifts focus away from Europe and onto China, North Korea, and Iran - the so-called Pacific Century.Previous calls by the US for Europe to become more independent militarily have not always been heeded, according to the EDA.

As activists are planning to lead a Global March to Jerusalem next Friday, Israel has warned neighboring countries that it would forcefully respond to attempted breaches of its borders.The Global March to Jerusalem initiative aims at getting over one million Arabs and their supporters to attempt to infiltrate Israel’s borders on March 30th. A spokesman for the march said last week the initiative demand[s] freedom for Palestine and its capital Jerusalem.The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) has presented information that Iran is behind the initiative and openly supports it. The march has also been endorsed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who was U.S. President Barack Obama's pastor for 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.Diplomatic sources told the London-based Asharq Alawsat newspaper on Friday that Israel has sent messages to the governments of Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, the Hamas government in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority regarding the planned march.The report said that in the messages Israel made it clear that anyone who will come near its borders would be considered an infiltrator and the IDF will act against him with full force.Israel also reportedly demanded that Arab countries not allow an escalation of the tension in the region through marches toward its borders.Channel 10 News, which cited the Asharq Alawsat report, said that the Israeli Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister's Office refused to comment on the report.
Earlier this week, radio host Aaron Klein of WABC radio in New York offered $50,000 to an organizer of the Global March to Jerusalem, if he could name one city in the Middle East, outside of Israel, that has more freedom than Jerusalem. Syria rebel hubs hit as envoy arrives in Russia

As speculation continues about whether Israel, with our without the United States, will launch a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, an Iranian website described how the Islamic Republic would repulse a ground attack against it.The report on the website was translated into English by t he Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).On March 15 the website Mashreq News, which is close to security circles in Iran, cited statements by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Al-Qods Forces commander Qassem Suleimani, who tauntingly declared at a March 13 ceremony that his regime's military forces will work determinedly, with honor and national force, and will demonstrate their zeal in facing any blind attack from the enemy.The statement elaborated on Suleimani’s remarks, describing in detail how the IRGC would repel a ground attack on Iran, including a list of the means of warfare it would use.According to the website, the account is based on the IRGC's latest military maneuvers in eastern Iran and assumes that the country would be invaded from the east. The maneuvers included mechanized infantry, armored forces, helicopters and concealed forces.MEMRI’s analysis noted that what is remarkable about this article is that, while all assessments and predictions published in the media in recent months have envisioned a surgical Western air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, Mashreq discussed an extensive ground attack in eastern Iran, stressing the country's ability to repel such an attack by listing the weapons systems in its possession.
The article is presumably intended to calm the fears of Iran's citizens over a potential strike against the country. However, beyond the failure to address the most plausible threat of an air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, the outdated military equipment attributed to the IRGC may indicate Iran's military inferiority, at least in terms of its ground capability, MEMRI notes.The article’s main points, as outlined by MEMRI, is that the IRGC forces will use remotely operated and controlled equipment, such as smart mines and anti-personnel bounding mines that have been modified to combat enemy vessels.IRGC forces will use a combined force of T-72 tanks and troops equipped with semi-heavy arms and rocket launchers. The APCs are equipped with an Iranian-made Tousan missile and also feature defense systems against chemical, biological, and radiological WMDs, and a masking system to evade enemy laser-guided missiles.The website explained that all these assets can evade enemy detection with stealth abilities, including reducing their heat and radar signatures.Mashreq explained that during the recent maneuvers, the IRGC forces were assisted by light motorcycle units armed with light and semi-heavy weapons, such as shoulder-fired and surface-to-air missiles. These units, which conceal themselves in different areas, emerge from hiding at the appropriate time, surprise the enemy, and are expected to inflict heavy losses.Aerial support for the troops will be provided by (Bell AH-1) Cobra and Mil Mi-17 helicopters, Mashreq said. The Cobra attack helicopters will provide aerial support for ground troops. They are armed with 20-millimeter cannon, Haidar-70 (sic.) rockets, and a new generation of Toophan missiles that can be used to attack the enemy from a distance of several kilometers.
The Mil Mi-17 helicopters, which can carry some 30 soldiers, will be used for quick transport, and possess significant firepower thanks to their ability to carry six medium-range rockets on each side as well as semi-heavy machine guns.The website also noted that the recent maneuvers included simulating the defense of ground units from aerial attack. This defense was provided by shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and SAM-6 anti-aircraft missile systems, and by artillery mounted on tanks and APCs, which is expected to provide a maximal effective aerial coverage of two-and-a-half to three kilometers.The SAM-6 missile system tested in these maneuvers is expected to overcome enemy aircraft. Jewish communal leaders were instructed by the Iranian authorities this week to have at least 10 young men aged 18 to 22 ready for the march. They were to be given the honor of acting as vanguard for breaking through the Lebanese-Israeli border fence and leading a mass incursion across the border.
They suspect that this ploy is meant to prevent Israeli soldiers from firing on the trespassers for fear of killing the Jewish contingent, while at the same time, exposing them to violence when the event is over at the hands of al-Qaeda linked Palestinian groups under Hizballah protection.The Salafi doctrine held by the al Qaeda killer Muhammad Merah who murdered four Jews, including three children, in Toulouse Monday, is rife in the south Lebanese Palestinian Ain Hilwa refugee camp. The most active are two Palestinian jihadist groups, the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which now and then shoots rockets into northern Israel, and Jund al-Sham, which is closely tied to al Qaeda branches in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, where they call themselves Osbat al-Ansar.The two terrorist groups are the bosses of the Safouri Quarter of the camp.Our sources report an Iranian scheme to send the Jewish marchers on a visit to Ain Hilwa to show their solidarity with the most radical Palestinian cause.Last week, Jewish leaders were obliged to sign a declaration of solidarity with the Global March and condemnation of Israel. Syrian tanks enter northern town, Homs pounded again

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian forces pounded the central city of Homs with mortar fire while troops backed by heavy armor stormed rebellious towns across the country on Saturday, leaving six civilians and four soldiers dead, opposition activists said.
Ignoring a U.N. Security Council call for an end to hostilities, President Bashar al-Assad's forces clashed with rebel fighters and bombarded several towns and cities, aiming to crush a year-long uprising against the government.Security forces killed at least one person as they raided Saraqib, in Idlib province bordering Turkey, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).There are dozens of tanks and armored vehicles storming Saraqib now and there is heavy artillery fire, said activist Manhal from Idlib province via Skype.A portion of the rebels have made a strategic retreat, but there are rebel forces still inside, and about a third of residents have fled the town, he added.Two died in Homs, the epicenter of the anti-Assad revolt, as the central city suffered another day of what activists said was indiscriminate gunfire and shelling on residential areas.The shelling started like it does every morning, for no reason. They are using mortar and tank fire on many neighborhoods of old Homs, an activist in Homs's Bab Sbaa neighborhood told Reuters by Skype, adding most residents in the area had fled to safer districts and many were trying to get out of the city altogether.The Free Syrian Army had been in Bab Sbaa when the army started shelling the area four days ago and they weren't able to block the army raids because they were getting hit by mortars at the same time that armored vehicles were coming in, he said.We only have a few rebels here left, there is nothing they can do.

Mortars and heavy artillery fire reportedly hitting the city of Qusair, in Homs province, killed two civilians according to the SOHR, which has a network of contacts across Syria.In the southern province of Deraa, birthplace of the revolt, SOHR said a man was shot dead at a checkpoint in an area where security forces were raiding towns after a soldier was killed at a checkpoint. Three other soldiers were killed in a rebel attack in the northeastern province of Hasaka, it said.Independent verification of the reports is impossible because the Syrian authorities have barred access to foreign journalists and human rights workers.Activists in the towns of Douma, near the capital Damascus, reported hearing explosions from heavy fighting overnight as ambulances raced through the city. By late morning they said the fighting had eased and reported seeing armored vehicles and snipers deployed through the city.Army forces were also bombarding the town Qalaat al-Madyaq, close to Hama, with heavy artillery and mortar fire. They have been trying to storm the city for two weeks, the SOHR said, but have met stubborn resistance from rebel forces.More than 8,000 people have died in the uprising, according to U.N. figures. SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Saturday it will hold a special parliamentary session next month during which the reclusive country's new young leader, Kim Jong-un, is expected to be given a top title aimed at consolidating his grip on power.The North has planned a series of events next month to mark the centenary of the birth of the state's founder, Kim Il-sung, including a rare ruling party conference and the controversial launch of a ballistic rocket it says will carry a satellite.Experts say the young Kim, believed to be in his mid to late 20s, could be given two of the countries' senior most titles during the celebrations -- secretary general of the party and chairman of the defense commission.The North's state media said on Saturday the Supreme People's Assembly, which has the formal mandate to appoint the chief of the National Defence Commission, the state's supreme military body, would meet on April 13.The Workers' Party conference is also scheduled for the middle of next month.The young Kim's appointment to the top posts would cement his position as paramount leader and ease lingering fears of a power struggle plunging the country into turmoil.Kim took power after his father died in December and many analysts had feared a chaotic succession.The young Kim only holds a military post in the ruling party. ROCKET LAUNCH WARNING
The United States has warned that the North's rocket launch next month will impact an area between Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, an Australian newspaper reported on Saturday.The Sydney Morning Herald said that U.S. envoy Kurt Campbell on Friday briefed Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr on the ballistic missile's southward trajectory from a North Korean launch pad.If the missile test proceeds as North Korea has indicated, our judgment is that it will impact in an area roughly between Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, the paper quoted Campbell, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, as saying.We have never seen this trajectory before. We have weighed into each of these countries and asked them to make clear that such a test is provocative and this plan should be discontinued.The North has said the rocket's trajectory will be southwards and that will not impact neighboring countries.North Korea wants to use the celebrations around Kim Il-sung's birthday on April 15 to showcase its emergence as a strong and prosperous nation, even as millions go hungry and it begs for international aid.
Its vow to fire a rocket carrying a working satellite has put in jeopardy a deal struck in February with the United States to get food aid in return for a moratorium on long-range missile and nuclear tests.The North's Foreign Ministry warned that it was intolerable double standards for some countries to assert that the North was the only nation not allowed to launch satellites while for the same countries, satellite launches were commonplace.If there will be any sinister attempt to deprive the (North) of its independent and legitimate right and put the unreasonable double standards upon it, this will inevitably compel the (North) to take countermeasures, the ministry said in a statement late on Friday.
PHILIPPINES ON ALERT
An Australian foreign ministry official told Reuters Canberra has expressed concern about the flight path which suggest a southerly trajectory for the missile, with booster rockets landing in the Yellow Sea and off the coast of the Philippines.
Philippine Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said this week the North's launch was unacceptable, and that it was relying on U.S. help to track it. Indonesia has also condemned it.North Korea has conducted two similar launches. The last one, in 2009, provoked outrage in Tokyo because the rocket flew over Japan. As it did three years ago, Japan says it is prepared to shoot the rocket down if it threatens its territory.The rocket launch, which the United States and other countries say is the same as a ballistic missile test, is banned under U.N. resolutions.Even China, North Korea's main ally, has expressed its worry over the launch, scheduled for between April 12 and April 16, and has urged the North to stay calm and exercise restraint and avoid escalation.The secretive North has twice tested a nuclear device, but experts doubt whether it yet has the ability to miniaturize an atomic bomb to fit inside a warhead.The North's rocket launch is expected to be one of main issues up for discussion when about 50 world leaders gather in Seoul on Monday for Nuclear Security Summit. As much as we're enjoying these halcyon early spring days of bare legs and light, perfect al fresco, and walking jacketless through the park, we are also worried. Worried about what it means. U.N. tells Syria to back peace moves; violence rages

Security Council, including Russia, agreed on Wednesday to a statement endorsing efforts by Kofi Annan to end the Syrian uprising, providing a rare moment of global unity in the face of the year-long crisis.The statement, which threatens Syria with unspecified further steps if it fails to comply with a six-point peace plan drawn up by Annan, will be formally adopted in New York later in the day, diplomats said.Although the original Western-drafted statement had to be diluted at Russia's demand, editing out any specific ultimatums, the fact that all major powers signed up to the proposal represented a blow to President Bashar al- Assad, who is fighting for his survival.At least 8,000 people have died in the revolt, according to U.N. figures, with the violence intensifying in recent weeks as pro-government forces bombard rebel towns and villages, looking to sweep their lightly armed opponents out of their strongholds.U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday that the crisis was alarming and had massive repercussions for the entire world.We do not know how events will unfold. MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev proposed on Wednesday reviving a social democratic party in Russia in the hope of uniting leftist groups opposed to President-elect Vladimir Putin.Gorbachev, 81, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying he was ready to relaunch a movement he led from 2001 until 2004 but that he would not be its leader.He has little public support because he is widely blamed for the Soviet Union's collapse, and his party made little impact in its previous incarnation, when it failed to win any seats in the lower house of parliament before it was dissolved in 2007.Many Russians were skeptical about Gorbachev's proposal.It is not productive. Despite all my respect for Mikhail Sergeyevich's state service, he can't move this rock alone,said Gennady Gudkov, a protest leader and opposition lawmaker.orbachev is popular abroad, but it would be a gross exaggeration to speak of his popularity at home,he said, adding that the opposition should look to reforming leftist parties with seats in parliament.Gorbachev, who launched perestroika (restructuring) reforms and glasnost (openness), appears worried that leftist groups are too disunited to take advantage of draft reforms that would make it easier to register political parties.There is a lot of confusion about party-building in Russia now and a social democratic party could bring together a wide circle,Interfax quoted him as saying.I don't intend to lead this new party but am ready to play a very active role in its creation and I encourage all those who were in the last team of Social Democrats to get involved.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Tehran will retaliate against any attack by Israeli or American forces on the same level, Iran's top leader said Tuesday in a defiant address just moments after U.S. President Barack Obama appealed directly to the Iranian people with a message of solidarity.The contrasting approaches highlighted the broad range of political posturing and tactics as the standoff deepens over Tehran's nuclear program.Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking on state TV to mark the Iranian new year, repeated his claims that the country does not seek atomic weapons, but said all of Iran's conventional firepower was ready to respond to any attack.We do not have atomic weapons and we will not build one. But against an attack by enemies — to defend ourselves either against the U.S. or Zionist regime — we will attack them on the same level that they attack us, he said, using the term Iranian authorities often use for Israel.Despite the hard-edged tone for most of the speech, there were hints of overtures toward America before a possible resumption of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers. Russia warned Tuesday that Iran would have no option but to develop nuclear weapons if it came under attack from either the United States or Israel over its contested atomic programme.The CIA and other US officials admit they now have no information about the Iranian leadership taking the political decision to produce nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Moscow's Kommersant FM radio.But I am almost certain that such a decision will surely be taken after (any) strikes on Iran, Lavrov said.The pre-recorded interview was aired shortly after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that his country was ready to strike back against either the United States or Israel at the same level as they attack us.
Moscow has close military and commercial ties with Tehran and has only grudgingly backed four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions over Iran's suspected nuclear weapons development drive.But Lavrov argued that Russia was not defending an ally but trying to avert a broader conflict or possible nuclear arms race from breaking out in the region.He added that Israel's threats against Iran were only pushing other nations on poor terms with the West to consider pursuing their own nuclear weapon drives.This happening... around Iran are forcing a lot of Third World countries to pause and realise that if you have a nuclear bomb, no one will really bother you.

U.N. tells Syria to back peace moves; violence rages

Security Council, including Russia, agreed on Wednesday to a statement endorsing efforts by Kofi Annan to end the Syrian uprising, providing a rare moment of global unity in the face of the year-long crisis.The statement, which threatens Syria with unspecified further steps if it fails to comply with a six-point peace plan drawn up by Annan, will be formally adopted in New York later in the day, diplomats said.Although the original Western-drafted statement had to be diluted at Russia's demand, editing out any specific ultimatums, the fact that all major powers signed up to the proposal represented a blow to President Bashar al- Assad, who is fighting for his survival.At least 8,000 people have died in the revolt, according to U.N. figures, with the violence intensifying in recent weeks as pro-government forces bombard rebel towns and villages, looking to sweep their lightly armed opponents out of their strongholds.U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday that the crisis was alarming and had massive repercussions for the entire world.We do not know how events will unfold. But we do know that we all have a responsibility to work for a resolution of this profound and extremely dangerous crisis,Ban said in a speech in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.Syria lies in a pivotal position at the heart of a web of regional conflicts in the Middle East, comprising a mix of faiths, sects and ethnic groups, and diplomats fear the rebellion is degenerating into a full-blown civil war.Assad's forces have chalked up a string of gains as they turned their firepower on areas held by rebels, but the fighting shows no sign of abating and analysts expect the insurgents to change their tactics and adopt guerrilla warfare.

Russia and China have vetoed two previous U.N. draft resolutions that would have condemned Damascus and have resisted calls from Western and Arab states for Assad to stand down.But faced by growing global outrage at the bloodshed, the two countries agreed to a so-called presidential statement, which are generally non-binding documents that nonetheless require unanimous support in the Security Council.The move came days after Annan, the U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria, had told the Security Council that Damascus's response to his plans for peace were disappointing and had urged the international community to lay side its divisions.His plan calls for a cease-fire, political dialogue between the government and opposition, and full access for aid agencies.The last time the Security Council passed a presidential statement on Syria was August 2011, although council members reached a rare unanimous agreement on informal remarks to the press on March 1 to rebuke Damascus for not allowing U.N. humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos into the country.Shortly after the Council approved those remarks to the press, Amos was allowed to visit Damascus.The latest Council agreement came after Moscow had adopted a new, sharper tone with Syria, a long-time ally and home to Russia's only naval base outside the former Soviet Union.We believe the Syrian leadership reacted wrongly to the first appearance of peaceful protests and ... is making very many mistakes,Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Russian radio station Kommersant-FM on Tuesday.This, unfortunately, has in many ways led the conflict to reach such a severe stage.

Gorbachev says revive Russian social democratic party

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev proposed on Wednesday reviving a social democratic party in Russia in the hope of uniting leftist groups opposed to President-elect Vladimir Putin.Gorbachev, 81, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying he was ready to relaunch a movement he led from 2001 until 2004 but that he would not be its leader.He has little public support because he is widely blamed for the Soviet Union's collapse, and his party made little impact in its previous incarnation, when it failed to win any seats in the lower house of parliament before it was dissolved in 2007.Many Russians were skeptical about Gorbachev's proposal.It is not productive. Despite all my respect for Mikhail Sergeyevich's state service, he can't move this rock alone,said Gennady Gudkov, a protest leader and opposition lawmaker.orbachev is popular abroad, but it would be a gross exaggeration to speak of his popularity at home,he said, adding that the opposition should look to reforming leftist parties with seats in parliament.Gorbachev, who launched perestroika (restructuring) reforms and glasnost (openness), appears worried that leftist groups are too disunited to take advantage of draft reforms that would make it easier to register political parties.There is a lot of confusion about party-building in Russia now and a social democratic party could bring together a wide circle,Interfax quoted him as saying.I don't intend to lead this new party but am ready to play a very active role in its creation and I encourage all those who were in the last team of Social Democrats to get involved.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Tehran will retaliate against any attack by Israeli or American forces on the same level, Iran's top leader said Tuesday in a defiant address just moments after U.S. President Barack Obama appealed directly to the Iranian people with a message of solidarity.The contrasting approaches highlighted the broad range of political posturing and tactics as the standoff deepens over Tehran's nuclear program.Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking on state TV to mark the Iranian new year, repeated his claims that the country does not seek atomic weapons, but said all of Iran's conventional firepower was ready to respond to any attack.We do not have atomic weapons and we will not build one. But against an attack by enemies — to defend ourselves either against the U.S. or Zionist regime — we will attack them on the same level that they attack us, he said, using the term Iranian authorities often use for Israel.Despite the hard-edged tone for most of the speech, there were hints of overtures toward America before a possible resumption of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers. He urged the U.S. to have a respectful attitude toward Iran — suggesting it could bring dividends.Earlier this month, Khamenei gave a rare nod of approval to Washington after Obama said he favored diplomacy to resolve the nuclear dispute.In a video message for the Iranian new year, known as Nowruz, Obama tried to reach out to the Iranian people, saying there was no reason for the United States and Iran to be divided from one another. Iran will produce nuclear weapons if attacked: Russia

Russia warned Tuesday that Iran would have no option but to develop nuclear weapons if it came under attack from either the United States or Israel over its contested atomic programme.The CIA and other US officials admit they now have no information about the Iranian leadership taking the political decision to produce nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Moscow's Kommersant FM radio.But I am almost certain that such a decision will surely be taken after (any) strikes on Iran, Lavrov said.The pre-recorded interview was aired shortly after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that his country was ready to strike back against either the United States or Israel at the same level as they attack us.
Moscow has close military and commercial ties with Tehran and has only grudgingly backed four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions over Iran's suspected nuclear weapons development drive.But Lavrov argued that Russia was not defending an ally but trying to avert a broader conflict or possible nuclear arms race from breaking out in the region.He added that Israel's threats against Iran were only pushing other nations on poor terms with the West to consider pursuing their own nuclear weapon drives.This happening... around Iran are forcing a lot of Third World countries to pause and realise that if you have a nuclear bomb, no one will really bother you.

But do away with it, close it, eliminate it -- never.Lavrov's comments represented one of Russia's most impassioned arguments to date against the start of another war on its southern periphery.Russia had previously cautioned that such a campaign could lead to a mass flood of refugees to neighbouring countries like Azerbaijan. It has also warned of the dangers of possible reprisal attack from Iran.But Lavrov appeared ready to drop that argument on Tuesday by noting that an attack against Israel could also endanger the lives of Palestinians.I am absolutely convinced that Iran will never decide to do this, if only because... a threat to destroy Israel will also destroy Palestine, he said.He also went out of his way to strongly criticise Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for repeatedly threatening to destroy the Jewish state.This is completely unacceptable... and we categorically condemn it, Lavrov said.It is simply uncivilised and unworthy of a country as ancient as Iran.
