EU envoy to US flaunts new powers
ANDREW RETTMAN Today AUG 11,10 @ 13:31 CET

The EU's new ambassador to the US, Joao Vale de Almeida, has underlined the new powers conferred on EU envoys by the Lisbon Treaty while taking up his post in Washington. In a series of interviews to US-based press on Tuesday (10 August), the ambassador noted that he is empowered to speak on behalf of EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy, EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso and EU member states.I do not wish or will impose myself on the member states' ambassadors ... Where we have a common position, I am the one leading the show. Bilateral matters are the mandate of the 27 [EU member state] ambassadors, he told the Washington Post. In this area code, you call me,he added, on the apocryphal tale of former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger once asking whom he should telephone if he wants to speak to the EU.

I'm the first new type of ambassador for the European Union anywhere in the world, he told Agence France Presse. Our delegations now cover a wide spectrum of issues well beyond the economic dimension, trade dimension and regulatory dimension, to cover all policies in the union, including foreign policy and security policy. The EU is currently in the process of converting its 138 foreign missions into EU delegations empowered to speak on behalf of the whole union. In the past, the missions' main task was to implement EU projects and to channel information back and forth to EU institutions. The Belgian EU presidency aims to wrap up the conversion process by the end of the year, while EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton is in the coming weeks to name a first generation of 31 new EU heads and deputy heads of delegation in her European External Action Service.Mr Vale de Almeida told AFP that he will focus on Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East peace process in the foreign policy area: On the foreign policy side, Iran is top of the list.

Transatlantic economic ties and the recovery from the global financial crisis will also lead his agenda, he added. In a formal letter adressed to US President Barack Obama, the EU ambassador downplayed the idea that China is becoming a more important partner for the US than the EU. The emergence of new powers has led to predictions that transatlantic relations will be less important in the future, but this view overlooks the enormous stock we have vested in one another,he wrote. Mr Vale de Almeida's appointment, decided in Brussels earlier this year, saw allegations of cronyism against the EU commission. Mr Barroso, a fellow Portuguese countryman of Mr Vale de Almeida, reportedly pushed through the nomination over Ms Ashton's head.EU diplomats at the time also complained the new ambassador - a former journalist who served as an EU commission press spokesman, an advisor to Mr Barroso and, briefly, as head of the commission's external relations department, but who has no diplomatic experience - is not up to the job.Meanwhile, EU countries remain less than comfortable with the new division of power under Lisbon. What you see in the big emerging countries and in the US, is that each [EU] country defends its privileged relationship. When you talk to the Chinese or to the Indians they say: Yes, we have this EU summit once a year. But for the rest of the time, each of your countries comes and says the EU is not important,a veteran EU diplomat told EUobserver in a recent interview.

Commissioner defends unfashionable EU tax idea
ANDREW RETTMAN Today AUG 11,10 @ 11:18 CET

The Polish commissioner in charge of the EU budget, Janusz Lewandowski, has said an EU levy on the financial sector has the best chance of winning support after France joined the UK and Germany in opposition to plans for creating an EU tax.Talking about EU own resources and something with the shape of a European tax is extraordinarily unfashionable. But I see a tendency, that it is possible in terms of public opinion to defend a tax on financial transactions or another form of tax on the financial sector. It would even be popular, he told the Polish press agency, PAP, on Tuesday (10 August).Mr Lewandowski noted that he is looking to raise about €30 billion to €40 billion a year from the new revenue source in order to keep EU spending levels at no less than the current rate of €140 billion a year in the 2014 to 2020 period. He said EU financial ministers are encouraging the European Commission to explore new revenue options despite a public backlash against the EU tax idea by the bloc's biggest member states. They are telling the commission: keep looking, maybe you will find something, so long as it lets us reduce payments from state budgets,Mr Lewandowski told PAP.This motivates me to look for new revenue sources, because I know what kind of impasse we will hit in budget talks if they are to mean larger donations from Paris, Berlin, London or other capitals. This is why it's worth looking for new solutions and taking a risk.France on Tuesday joined the UK and Germany in criticising the notion of a new EU levy, recently floated by Mr Lewandowski in the German press.

We think this idea of a European tax is completely inopportune. Any kind of supplementary tax is today unwelcome. It is rather a time for making savings both in member states and the European institutions, the French junior minister for EU affairs, Pierre Lellouche told Agence France Presse.Clearly the idea of a European tax, the power to levy taxes, raises fundamental political issues and would be a very significant transfer of sovereignty, he added. The Lewandowski gambit comes amid deep cuts in national spending by many EU states in reaction to the eurozone debt crisis, creating antagonism to any extra transfer of money to Brussels. But a financial transaction tax would hit a sector held morally responsible for the global financial crisis in 2008, which led to the current age of austerity. Poland and Belgium are the only EU countries so far to come out in favour of the new EU levy.

Poland's EU affairs minister Mikolaj Dowgielewicz told PAP on Tuesday that Warsaw would welcome a debate on the subject, so long as the tax would not target ordinary citizens and would not be linked to CO2 emissions trading rights. But it's not to be excluded that we would accept other variants. That's why I would warn others against excessive criticism, he said. Belgian junior minister Melchior Wathelet was unequivocal in his backing. With a mechanism of own resources, it [the EU budget] would be more fair,he told the Belga news agency.Belgium, as the current holder of the rotating EU presidency, and the home country of EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy, is in a good position to put the tax idea high on the agenda of EU finance ministers in September, when Mr Lewandowski aims to put forward a formal proposal.

EZEKIEL 39:11-22
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

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

Israel bulldozes Muslim graves in Jerusalem
Tue Aug 10, 11:14 am ET

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israeli bulldozers backed by police destroyed dozens of gravestones in a Muslim cemetery in central Jerusalem on Tuesday, according to an AFP photographer. The Islamic Movement accused the municipality of destroying more than 200 Muslim graves that had been recently renovated in a centuries-old cemetery in mostly Jewish west Jerusalem.Last night at around 12:30 am (2130 GMT) occupation forces entered the cemetery and destroyed around 200 graves, said Mahmud Abu Atta of the Al-Aqsa Foundation linked to the group, whose members are Arab citizens of Israel. He said the bulldozers returned later in the day to destroy dozens more after a Jerusalem court rejected a petition to halt the work. The destruction is related to the issue of renovation. The Israeli establishment does not want us to renovate the graves so it is destroying them, he said. The spokesman for the municipality did not respond to several phone calls, and a police spokesman said he was looking into the incident. The demolition of the graves happened near the site of a planned Museum of Tolerance to be built by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a US-based Jewish human rights group. The project has sparked controversy because of its proximity to the graves but Abu Atta said the latest demolition work was not related to the museum.Israel's 1.3 million Arab citizens include the descendants of Palestinians who remained in the Jewish state after the 1948 war that attended its creation.

EZEKIEL 7:19

Enter Elul, Month of Penitence
by Gil Ronen AUG 11,10

The month of Elul, which began Tuesday evening, is the final one of the Jewish year. It is immediately followed by Rosh HaShana, the beginning of the new year and a Day of Judgment. For this reason it is considered a time of soul-searching, in which the Israelites are expected to undergo a process of teshuva – a return to roots and to morality, and a process of renewal in anticipation of the new year. The 40 days that include Elul and the ten days that follow it are considered Days of Mercy because they are the days in which Moses – to whom Jews usually refer as Moshe Rabbenu, or Our Rabbi Moses – ascended Mount Sinai and prayed for the Israelites after the Sin of the Calf. On Yom Kippur, G-d told him that He had forgiven Israel's transgression and Moses went back down the mountain with the new Tablets of commandments. The days are therefore considered fit for teshuva and tikkun – fixing one's heart and mending one's ways.Sephardic Jews traditionally recite the selichot, or prayers of penitence, throughout the month, either in the very early morning or after midnight. The selichot are prayers to G-d asking that He will forgive us our trespasses, bring us closer to Him, have mercy on Nation of Israel and fully redeem them.Ashkenazi Jews begin to recite selichot on the week that precedes Rosh Hashana. Some Yemenite Jews begin to recite them in mid-Elul.Ashkenazi Jews – descendants of communities that lived in Europe for hundreds of years – also add Psalm 2, which begins with the words A Psalm of David: G-d is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? – following their prayers during Elul. It is also customary to blow the shofar, or ritual ram's horn, after the morning prayers, to arouse the hearts of the believers to make teshuva before Judgment Day. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

Report: Police Use Tear Gas to Arrest 40 Jewish Girls on March
by Eli Stutz AUG 11,10

Tuesday evening, police arrested 40 Jewish girls attempting to march into Jericho. The girls were taken to the police station in Maaleh Adumin. Some of the arrested said the police used tear gas against them. The marchers told Arutz Sheva that they would continue their struggle for the Land of Israel. The Hebrew Cities March, which began on Monday, aimed at marching to the historically Jewish cities of Shechem and Jericho, abandoned by the IDF in recent years. Dozens of marchers have been arrested over the course of the week at various stages of the march. One of the marchers, a teen-aged girl who spoke to Arutz-Sheva from a closed military vehicle without air conditioning, said that the arrest was carried out while she and the other participants were marching on Israeli territory, without a warrant and without warning. Suddenly, the soldiers attacked us, threw us on the floor and started beating us, dragged us into a hot army jeep. Some of the girls received burns from contact with the jeep, said the girl, who was in the jeep along with seven of her friends.

Uncovered: Heaviest Gold Coin Ever Found in Israel
by Hillel Fendel AUG 11,10

Archaeologists working in Tel Kedesh in northern Israel have uncovered an extremely rare 2,200-year-old gold coin, minted in Alexandria by King Ptolemy V.The head of the Coin Department of the Israel Antiquities Association, long-time American immigrant Dr. Donald T. Ariel, said, This is the heaviest and most valuable ancient gold coin ever found in an excavation in Israel. The coin depicts a queen, believed to be Arsinoe II Philadelphus, who was married to her half-brother Ptolemy II. It is possible, however, that it may actually be Ptolemy V's wife Cleopatra I, daughter of Antiochus III.The excavations at Tel Kedesh, near Israel's border with Lebanon, are being carried out by the University of Michigan and University of Minnesota. This is an amazing numismatic find, Dr. Ariel said. The coin is beautiful and in excellent preservation. It is the heaviest gold coin with the highest contemporary value of any coin ever found in an excavation in Israel, weighing almost an ounce,or 27.7 grams, compared with 4.5 grams for most ancient gold coins.

In Ariel’s words, This extraordinary coin was apparently not in popular or commercial use, but had a symbolic function, possibly related to a festival in honor of Queen Arsinoe, who was deified in her lifetime. The coin's denomination is called a mnaieion, meaning a one-mina coin, and is equivalent to 100 silver drachms, or a mina of silver. The reverse side of the coin depicts two overlapping cornucopias (horns-of-plenty) decorated with fillets. It is rare to find Ptolemaic coins in Israel dating after the country came under Seleucid rule in 200 BCE, Ariel explained. The only other gold Ptolemaic coin from an excavation in Israel (from Akko) dates from the period of Ptolemaic hegemony, in the third century BCE, and weighs less than two grams. The excavations at Tel Kedesh, conducted since 1997, have uncovered a large Persian/Hellenistic administrative building, complete with reception halls, dining facilities, store rooms and an archive. While the documents in the archive were not preserved, the excavations yielded 2043 seal impressions, from which the flourishing of the Hellenistic phase of the building can be dated to the first half of the second century BCE.About three years ago, an Alexandrine hoard of Ptolemaic gold coins appeared on the world antiquities market. No coins of Ptolemy V were included in that hoard, however, so the extreme rarity of the mnaieion from Tel Kedesh remains unimpaired.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Jews Sound Off against Iran’s New Holocaust Denial Website
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu AUG 11,10

Jews have come out swinging against a new Iranian Holocaust denial website, which the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called a virtual cesspool of anti-Semitism. The ADL called on the U.S. government to publicly condemn the latest anti-Jewish offensive in the Islamic Republic. The HoloCartoon site mocks the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered in gas chambers, death marches, by hunger and by other forms of torture. It also displays cartoons showing Jews with hook-nosed worms tunneling holes in history books, and another caricature displays fake bodies at a concentration camp.It is rife with anti-Semitic imagery, Jewish conspiracy theories, Holocaust denial and factual inaccuracies, the ADL commented. HoloCartoon is a pernicious website replete with vicious anti-Semitism and caricatures of Jews fabricating the Holocaust story to advance their goals, and depictions of Jews as murderers and manipulative money worshippers. Its pseudo-history makes a mockery of the Holocaust and the site is little more than a virtual cesspool of anti-Semitism.

The website introduces the viewer to a Pink Panther theme song and tries to show that the killing of 6 million Jews in the Second World War known as the Holocaust was a sheer lie.The site is dedicated to all those who have been killed under the pretext of the Holocaust,Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported.ADL director Abe Foxman, a Holocaust survivor, said, This type of anti-Semitism is the calling card of the Iranian regime and a reflection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who continues a drumbeat of Holocaust denial and Jew-bashing.Israel’s Yad VaShem Holocaust Memorial Museum stated,The vulgar and cynical approach of the website, a combination of Holocaust denial and distortion, illustrated with anti-Semitic caricatures, further illustrates Iran’s disregard for reality and truth vis-à-vis the Holocaust, Jews and Israel.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Gaza: Goods Aplenty, Low Prices, No Buyers
by Hillel Fendel AUG 11,10

The Hamas terrorist government of Gaza announced the arrival on Monday evening of a European medical convoy of ships entitled Miles of Smiles II. The ships held 45 supporters – not 70 European politicians, as organizer Issam Yousef originally said - from seven countries, who brought 45 ambulances and over 50 other vehicles loaded with medical goods and equipment worth an estimated one million euros. The boats docked in the Egyptian Sinai port of El Arish, which is rapidly becoming the main drop-off point for ships laden with Gaza-bound goods.Yousef, who serves as deputy foreign minister for Hamas in Gaza, said that more aid convoys were expected to arrive in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, which begins today.A British delegation of 60 members arrived in Gaza beforehand in order to coordinate the arrival of Miles of Smiles with the Hamas leadership.Other recent or soon-to-arrive aid shipments for Gaza include:
-the Al-Quds IV convoy from Libya, to be followed by Al Quds V at the end of Ramadan
-a Malaysian delegation that arrived in Cairo on its way to Gaza, bringing clothing and medical equipment
-an Algerian ship with 85 containers of food and medical equipment
-and a Syrian convoy with five trucks and 116 tons of food.

In addition, the Inter-Arab Parliament has decided to dispatch three aid convoys to Gaza: One at the beginning of Ramadan, one in October with school supplies, and one at the end of December.Israel continues to send to Gaza 200-300 truckloads of food and supplies each day. It appears that in honor of Ramadan, the markets in Gaza are bustling with cheaply-priced goods – yet buyers are sparse, because of rampant unemployment in Hamas-run Gaza.A month ago, Israel’s Cabinet approved 31 Gaza aid projects in principle, and plans to OK 45 more in the near future.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Tropical depression weakens slightly in the Gulf
AUG 11,10

MIAMI – A tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico has weakened slightly as it moves toward the site of the oil spill off Louisiana's coast. The depression's maximum sustained winds decreased to near 30 mph (45 kph) Wednesday. But the National Hurricane Center says some strengthening is still possible and it could become Tropical Storm Danielle before its center reaches land.A tropical storm warning has been issued for much of the Gulf Coast from Destin, Fla., to Intracoastal City, La., including New Orleans. The depression is located about 165 miles (265 kilometers) east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and is moving northwest.Officials have halted drilling on a relief well intended to permanently plug the blown-out well in the Gulf.

AUG 11,10

DES MOINES, Iowa – Authorities say one person remains missing after three cars were swept away in raging floodwaters in a storm-swollen creek in central Iowa.Polk County spokesman A.J. Munn says 11 people were in the cars that were washed away about 10 miles northeast of Des Moines, and that 10 of them have been accounted for Wednesday morning.Munn says it could be hours before the fast-moving water is safe enough for divers to resume their search. He says the sheriff's office used a global positioning system to track a 911 call from someone in one of the cars around 4 a.m., and sent rescue crews to the scene.Thunderstorms overnight dumped up to 6 inches of rain on parts of Iowa.

Death toll in China landslides rises to 1,117 By DAVID WIVELL, Associated Press Writer - AUG 11,10

ZHOUQU, China – Heavy rains lashed a remote section of northwestern China as the death toll from weekend flooding that triggered massive landslides jumped to 1,117, although the fading hopes of rescuers got a boost late Wednesday when a survivor was found in the debris. The state-run Xinhua News Agency gave no immediate details on the survivor, found nearly four days after the disaster struck. Earlier Wednesday, a 50-year-old man was rescued who had been trapped in knee-deep mud on the second floor of a hotel, Xinhua said.Local officials were cited as saying at least 627 people were still missing. The National Meteorological Center warned there was a relatively large chance of more landslides in the coming days, as heavier rain was expected, with up to 3 1/2 inches (90 millimeters) forecast for Friday.Troops and rescue teams, joined by traumatized survivors, were increasingly turning to recovering bodies and seeing to the needs of the living. Clean drinking water was a primary concern, with most local sources destroyed or too polluted to use.

Entire communities in Gansu province's Zhouqu district were swallowed when the debris-choked Bailong River jumped its banks early Sunday, releasing wave after wave of mud and rubble-strewn water. While torrential rains were the direct cause, tree cutting that left the dry hills exposed and the weakening of cliff faces by a massive 2008 earthquake were seen as contributing factors.Buildings were torn from their foundations, their lower floors blown out by the force of the debris-laden water. Three villages comprising hundreds of households were entirely buried and much of the county seat was submerged. In some households, all the people have died, making the counting of the dead more difficult, Zhang Weixing, a Ministry of Civil Affairs official, told a news conference Wednesday.Crews using explosives and excavators rushed to drain an unstable lake on the Bailong upriver of Zhouqu, fearing more rain could cause a massive breach, bringing more misery to the town. The danger of the barrier lake collapsing has been basically eliminated, Jiao Yong, deputy vice minister of the Ministry of Water Resources, told the news conference.

Disinfectant crews in protective suits sprayed chemicals across the ground and over machinery, the smell of death heavy in the air. State media reported numerous cases of dysentery, while infected injuries, a lack of sanitation, clean drinking water and accumulating garbage increased the risk of typhoid, cholera and other diseases. But the deputy director of the Health Ministry's emergency office, Zhang Guoxin, said there have been no reports of an epidemic outbreak.Rescue crews have been largely reliant on hand tools, with heavy equipment either unable to traverse the difficult terrain or mired in mud up to several yards (meters) deep. But roads reopened Wednesday, allowing in heavy earth-moving equipment and supplies. At least 45,000 people have evacuated their homes, and the Ministry of Civil Affairs reported the delivery of 30,000 tents to the area, with thousands more on the way. Zhouqu has a population of 134,000, but it wasn't clear how many needed emergency shelter.Shen Si, a member of the Tibetan ethnic group native to the area, watched forlornly as troops dug to reach the bodies of her relatives inside their buried home.My mother and father in their 60s and my younger brother, all three of them, are buried here in our house still, she said.Throughout the area, bodies were seen wrapped in blankets and tied to sticks or placed on planks and left on the shattered streets for pickup.

The death toll rose to 1,117, up from 702 reported on Tuesday.China's leadership has ordered teams to continue the search for survivors, and the ruling Communist Party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee met Tuesday to discuss rescue and relief work.It is now a critical time ... we must give the highest prominence to the protection of people's lives and properties,it said in a statement. Flooding in China has killed more than 2,000 people this year and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage across 28 provinces and regions.

Magnitude 6 earthquake shakes Vanuatu: No damage

CANBERRA, Australia – The U.S Geological Survey says a magnitude 6 earthquake has shaken Vanuatu — a day after a stronger quake off the South Pacific island nation generated a small tsunami. The Wednesday quake was too small to cause a tsunami and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. A statement says the quake's epicenter was 46 miles (73 kilometers) northwest of the capital Port Vila and 25 miles (41 kilometers) deep.A powerful 7.5 magnitude quake off Vanuatu on Tuesday generated a small tsunami, shook buildings and brought down power lines. There was no major damage or serious injuries.

Russian wildfires raise Chernobyl radiation fears By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writer - AUG 11,10

MOSCOW – Russian emergency workers have increased forest patrols in a western region contaminated by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, trying to prevent wildfires that could spread harmful radiation, officials said Wednesday.Greenpeace and other environmental groups and forest experts say radioactive dust from the Chernobyl disaster could be harmful, even though doses would likely be small.Fire crews quickly extinquished about six new wildfires spotted this week in the Bryansk region, the part of Russia that suffered the most from the Chernobyl catastrophe in what was then Soviet Ukraine, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Yegorushkina said. Her agency also had reported sporadic wildfires last week, but said all had been put out.She said radiation experts from Moscow determined there has been no increase in radiation levels in the Bryansk area, on the border of Belarus and Ukraine. The soil holds radioactive particles that settled after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant's reactor No. 4 exploded during a pre-dawn test on April 26, 1986, spewing radioactive clouds over much of the western Soviet Union and northern Europe.Environmentalists have warned that the particles could be thrown into the air by wildfires and blown into other areas by the wind.

Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu acknowledged the danger last week, but said Wednesday the situation here is not as difficult as in the areas around Moscow, where acrid clouds of smog from the fires have polluted the air.Hundreds of wildfires sparked by the hottest summer ever recorded in Russia have engulfed large areas of western Russia. Moscow's death rate has doubled to 700 people a day. Morgues have been overflowing, and residents have been desperately seeking ways to stay cool amid soaring temperatures and air pollution.About 165,000 workers and 39 firefighting aircraft were battling more than 600 blazes nationwide Wednesday over 220,000 acres (more than 90,000 hectares), the Emergency Situations Ministry said.In several southwestern regions hit by the Chernobyl fallout, fires have engulfed about 9,600 acres (3,900 hectares), though most of those blazes have been snuffed out, said Vasily Tuzov, a deputy head of the federal forest protection service. He said it wouldn't be clear if fires had spread radioactive particles into previously unpolluted areas until workers had conducted tests. All we know now is that there have been fires in the areas with higher radiation levels,he told The Associated Press. But Emergency Situations Ministry official Vladislav Bolov insisted Wednesday that a check of the areas contaminated by Chernobyl this week proved the fires had not spread any radiation, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. The Bryansk forest protection service has increased patrols around the Bryansk forests, particularly in the southwest section affected by Chernobyl, agency chief Vladimir Rozinkevich said. There is a danger, but we are controlling the situation,he said.A Russian forest expert said the mixture of radioactive elements remaining in the forest floor was still dangerous.A cloud may come up with soot and spread over a huge territory, said Alexander Isayev of the Moscow-based Center for Forest Ecology and Productivity. In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it had no comment on the radioactive dangers posed by the wildfires.Associated Press reporters Mansur Mirovalev in Moscow and Rafael Gurbisz in Vienna contributed to this report.

POISONED WATERS

REVELATION 8:8-11
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Storm delays BP relief well by 2-3 days
By Kristen Hays - AUG 11,10

HOUSTON (Reuters) – An approaching storm in the Gulf of Mexico will delay by two to three days BP Plc's work on a relief well, the final step in permanently killing the source of the world's worst offshore oil spill, the top U.S. spill official said on Tuesday.BP suspended work on the relief well aiming to bore into its blown-out Macondo well hours before the National Hurricane Center said a tropical depression formed over the Gulf of Mexico.Computer models forecast the depression would move northwest, crossing the spill site before making landfall in Louisiana or elsewhere along the north-central Gulf coast by Wednesday night or early Thursday. This could potentially delay the final portion of the relief well for two to three days, retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told reporters earlier on Tuesday after the hurricane center said a tropical depression was likely.Separately, a special judicial panel ruled that a New Orleans federal judge would oversee a swath of civil lawsuits brought by commercial fishermen and injured workers from the Deepwater Horizon rig, which exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers and unleashing a nearly three-month undersea oil gusher.Securities lawsuits lobbed at BP by stockholders angered by its steep share price declines will be combined in Houston, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation decided. The British energy giant has lost over a third of its market value since the explosion.

BP has reserved $32.2 billion to pay legal claims, but analysts said the eventual bill could run well above that. The biggest U.S. environmental response operation passed a critical milestone last week by subduing the blown-out deepwater well with injections of heavy drilling mud, followed by a cement seal.BP's Macondo well, a mile down in the Gulf of Mexico, had been provisionally capped on July 15 after spewing an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf, soiling marshlands, fisheries and tourist beaches along several hundreds of miles (kilometers) of the Gulf Coast. The relief well is regarded as the final solution to plug the well 13,000 feet beneath the seabed. The storm could delay until the middle of next week the start of the planned bottom kill of the Macondo well, when the relief well is scheduled to intersect the well shaft, Allen said. The actual kill operation still could take several days, officials say. The original schedule would have had the work starting by Sunday. The enormous spill response operation is moving into a new phase to focus on shoreline cleanup and long-term recovery, Allen said. Crews are in the process of removing protective booms from the shores of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, he said. The government on Tuesday reopened 5,144 square miles (13,323 sq km) of Gulf waters to commercial and recreational fishing.About 22 percent of federal waters in the Gulf are now closed, down from 37 percent at the height of the spill.(Additional reporting by Anna Driver in Houston, Martha Graybow in New York, Tom Hals in Wilmington, Delaware and Tom Brown in Miami; Writing by Chris Baltimore; Editing by Peter Cooney)

Tropical depression halts drilling at Gulf well By JEFFREY COLLINS and HARRY R. WEBER, Associated Press Writer - AUG 11,10

NEW ORLEANS – Drilling the final feet of a relief well intended to permanently plug the busted BP oil well deep below the Gulf of Mexico will have to wait two to three days as a tropical depression bears down on the site.BP and Coast Guard officials had already decided to stop drilling earlier Tuesday, before forecasters at the National Hurricane Center named the storm a depression. A tropical storm warning was issued for much of the Gulf Coast affected by the oil spill, from Destin, Fla., to Intracoastal City, La., and included New Orleans. The center of the storm was located off Florida, about 165 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River on Wednesday. The depression had weakened slightly Wednesday morning, but the National Hurricane Center in Miami said it could still become Tropical Storm Danielle before reaching the coast.Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government's point man on the spill, said the last steps will have to wait for ending any threat from the well that spewed more than 200 million gallons of oil over three months before a temporary cap sealed it in mid-July.Crews will pop in a temporary plug to safeguard what they've drilled so far, but they won't send workers back to land. They have about 30 to 50 feet left to drill. The relief well is meant to allow BP PLC to pump mud and cement into the broken one from deep underground for a so-called bottom kill, a permanent seal that would complement a plug injected into the top of the well last week.Allen has insisted for days that BP go ahead with the bottom kill, even though the top plug appeared to be holding. On Tuesday, though, he said testing still needs to be done on the well before a final decision is made.I'm not sure we know that ... I don't want to prejudge whether we are going to do it or not going to do it. It will be conditions-based.

He later assigned a very low probability to the bottom kill not being done, but then said: We will let everybody know if that changes.BP Senior Vice President Kent Wells said it's really a possibility that cement engineers pumped in through the top went down into the reservoir, came back up and plugged the annulus, which is between the inner piping and the outer casing.Allen also said officials were removing some boom that had been put out to catch oil in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. He said the boom will be put it in storage and available for future use if necessary. The delay from the storm came on the same day that anglers and tourism operators got some good news: Federal authorities announced that about 5,000 square miles of Gulf along Florida's Panhandle was reopened for commercial and recreational fishing.Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, said the expanse from east of Pensacola to Cape San Blas and extending south into the open Gulf was safe for fishing. No oil has been observed in those waters since July 3, though testing will continue. The spill started with an April 20 explosion that sank the BP-leased drilling rig Deepwater Horizon and killed 11 workers.More than 300 lawsuits filed in the aftermath against BP and other companies will be handled by a federal judge in New Orleans, a judicial panel said Tuesday. An order issued Tuesday by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation said 77 cases plus more than 200 potential tag-along actions will be transferred to U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier. The judicial panel's order says the federal court based in New Orleans is the best place for the litigation because southeast Louisiana is the geographic and psychological center of gravity for the cases.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

No agreement on direct Israel-Palestinian talks By MARK LAVIE, Associated Press Writer - AUG 11,10

JERUSALEM – There is still no decision to resume direct Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, President Barack Obama's envoy acknowledged Wednesday, despite optimism in Washington that agreement was close.Officials in Washington had hoped that envoy George Mitchell's current two-day round of separate talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders would be the last before peace talks are restarted.Mitchell met Wednesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who repeated his call for direct negotiations.Mitchell said, Well, we share your objective, as you know, and we are continuing our efforts.Netanyahu replied, So let's get on with it.In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton echoed Mitchell's assessment. We continue to work closely with both sides to get to direct talks as soon as possible, she said, describing the Mitchell-Netanyahu session as a good, productive meeting.Afterward, an Israeli official said there was no breakthrough, putting the blame on the Palestinians. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because no government statement was made.Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat rejected the Israeli charge. The key is in Netanyahu's hands, he told The Associated Press. He said the meeting between Mitchell and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday was constructive and very positive.Palestinians are demanding frameworks for the talks that include a total freeze on construction in Israeli settlements and a commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.Israel's partial freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank, imposed to spur the talks, expires Sept. 26, and Netanyahu has indicated that it will not be extended.

Israel's ceremonial president, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres, spoke out Wednesday in favor of direct talks, which he said would serve the interests of peace and peaceful coexistence. He spoke after talks in Sofia Wednesday with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov. Peres said Bulgaria could serve as the venue for the negotiations.Israel is insisting on talks with no preconditions, balking at previous international statements and frameworks that might have massaged the differences. The last direct talks ended in late 2008 after a year of negotiations. Israel proposed a Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip, parts of Jerusalem and almost all of the West Bank with territorial exchanges. Erekat has said the Palestinians made a counterproposal to the U.S.Since then, however, the more hawkish Netanyahu has taken power. He has revoked the earlier Israeli proposal and would likely offer much less to the Palestinians.Associated Press writers Matthew Lee in Washington and Fisnik Abrashi in Sofia, Bulgaria, contributed to this report.

OBAMA THE FRAUD HITS #1 ON GOOGLE TRENDS

President Obama’s real name Barry Soetoro tops Google Trends
Aaron Dykes Infowars.com August 9, 2010

Yet another search term announced during the Alex Jones Show, Barry Soetoro has topped Google Trends’ hot searches, and that means a boost to exposing important keys to President Obama’s true history. The #1 search trend corresponds with a visit to Austin, Texas today from President Barack Obama, a.k.a. Barry Soetoro. This is yet another success for our active listeners which will help to expose the truth about the President’s deeply-buried past. It will further drive Internet readers to Paul Joseph Watson’s vital article, Barry Soetoro AKA Barack Obama’s Political Dynasty Crashes And Burns which exposes the desperate state of his failing administration, now posting the lowest approval rating for any president in history at this point in his term.Like previous searches for The Obama Deception,Poison Tap Water,The Ultimate Secret,Google Spies, and Brain Eating Vaccines,Infowars listeners have driven the term Barry Soetoro into the mainstream.

The question of President Obama’s legitimacy is indeed a legitimate question. But exposing Barry Soetoro means more than questioning Obama’s birthplace; it also means exposing the CIA and intelligence ties to the President, his mother and others in his family. It means educating people that he legally changed his name to Barry Soetoro and became an Indonesian citizen, and that no records in the public domain show that he ever changed his name or citizenship back. There is a reason that Obama’s first official act as president on January 21, 2009 was to seal the release of his records with an executive order.President Obama, and more importantly the powerful globalists who control him, have sought to censor, block and limit dissent throughout his presidency. They have attempted to shut down films like The Obama Deception and critics like Phil J. Berg, who brought a lawsuit challenging Obama’s constitutional eligibility to hold office. But with continued efforts from activists, the truth will emerge after all.Phil Berg: The Latest on Lawsuit Showing Barry Soetoro is Obama’s Legal Name – Alex Jones Tv 1/2

Freddie Mac says needs $1.8 billion from taxpayers By Corbett B. Daly – Mon Aug 9, 11:03 am ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Mortgage finance giant Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB) on Monday said it would need another $1.8 billion in aid from taxpayers, bringing its total request since it was taken over by the government two years ago to more than $64 billion. The second largest U.S. residential mortgage funds provider reported a loss of $6.0 billion, or $1.85 per diluted share, in the second quarter, including a $1.3 billion dividend payment to the government. That compares with an $8.0 billion loss in the prior quarter and is the best three-month performance in a year. The firm lost $840 million in the second quarter of last year. The company said losses stemmed primarily from loans purchased or guaranteed between 2005 and 2008.The U.S. Treasury took control of Freddie Mac and its sister entity, Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB), at the height of the financial crisis in 2008 as loan losses mounted.Since the government takeover, the two firms together have requested close to $150 billion from the government's unlimited credit line, scheduled to expire at the end of 2012.The plan to put Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae into conservatorship was meant to be temporary. But nearly two years later, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has only just begun the process of figuring out how to overhaul the U.S. housing finance system.Geithner has called for a conference on the future of housing finance to be held at the Treasury later this month. The financial regulatory overhaul, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama last month, did not address reorganizing Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, though it did restrict some mortgage lending practices that led to risky loans.

Freddie Mac said loans made last year and the first half of this year have significantly lower default rates than comparable loans made from 2006 through 2008. The company said about a third of its portfolio of single-family home loans consisted of those newer, higher quality loans.Fannie Mae has also said stricter lending standards adopted last year are beginning to pay off and the firm's new book of business is the strongest in a decade.Congress has scheduled hearings on the U.S. housing finance system in the coming months and any new system could take years to implement.Despite the improved loan quality, there is no going back to the Fannie-Freddie model (where shareholders profit in good times and taxpayers pay in bad times) and it does not matter how well their current book of business performs, said Howard Glaser, a consultant to mortgage lenders and a former housing official in the Clinton administration.(Editing by Theodore d'Afflisio)

Taxation pathology takes over U.S. Government By Laurie Roth AUG 9,10

In a stable and financially healthy time it would be great spending money for all kinds of colorful things. If money was flowing you could possibly imagine millions for bridges to nowhere, underground turtle tunnels and special mice research in San Francisco Bay, but in a severe recession, where millions are losing their jobs, homes and struggling for every penny, it is absurd. Some of the emergency, high priority spending items this congress tucked into the stimulus bill were:Research on exotic ants in the Southwest Indian Ocean Islands and East Africa, hot flashes and Yoga for cancer survivors and my personal favorite, Cocaine and its affects on Monkeys. Many GOP leaders listed an additional host of wasteful spending with the Senate stimulus bill. These included:$75 million for smoking cessation activities
$200 million for public computer centers at community colleges
$412 million for CDC building and property
$500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland
$1.2 billion for youth activities, including youth summer job programs
$6 billion to turn federal buildings into green buildings
$5.5 million for energy efficiency initiatives at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration
$850 million for Amtrak
$200 million for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations

At face value you can see some basis of rational if indeed you had a sea of money you hadn’t swiped from suffering tax payers to redistribute. However, this is nothing but disgraceful waste, much like the extravagant philosophy and lifestyle of Obama and this congress. Apparently we are to do as Obama says not as he does. Everyone is told to sacrifice and pull in while the Obama’s separately and together go on extravagant vacations, such as Michelle Obama’s latest in Spain, costing the tax payers untold money in extra security details. We are told in response to the national criticism on her orgy of spending, that this was all private money other than the security detail. I will believe that when ice cubes grow in hell. This administration and congress is like a drug cartel of out of control misrepresentation and spending. They spend, only reflecting their socialist/fascist ideals and goals, not the American people and needs at all. It isn’t just Government and congress that walks in Alice and Wonderland regarding spending but Unions are weighing in as well. Just this week we saw the Milwaukee Teacher’s Union fighting for special drug coverage. They want Viagra covered. After all, this is erectile dysfunction and discriminated against male employees not to have it in the policy. Never mind that 99.9% of the time

Viagra is used for recreational sex and makes play nicer for some.

Of course in the backdrop of all this sexual rights push for Viagra are hundreds of teachers being laid off. So far the estimated teacher layoffs coming this year are up to 682. One of the consultants for the school board estimated that restoring the Viagra drug benefit would cost around $766,000 a year.Isn’t that smashing? The Union would rather have Viagra with nearly a million dollar fee attached to it, when they could justify keeping hundreds of teachers on the job with that money. Then again…..what am I thinking?! Fancy sex on my terms is everything and way above keeping jobs.Perhaps we could build some more bridges to nowhere, fill them with progressive, liberal politicians, who test out the cocaine and viagra instead of the Milwaukee folks and the monkeys.

NASA and IPCC Exploit Or Ignore Natural Events Like Solar Flares, Aurora And Weather:By Dr. Tim Ball Monday, August 9, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

On August 3rd and 4th a solar flare erupted from the surface of the Sun coincident with a sunspot equal in area to the Earth. Many people saw the associated increase in aurora visible in western North America as far south as Iowa. They were most visible in the auroral belt shown on the left, which is well north at this time of year. Many prepared for other impacts and all sorts of hysterical predictions were made, including claims this was the start of increasingly severe activity leading to 2012. (Yes, the dreaded Mayan calendar year nonsense). The only thing that materialized was extensive and dazzling aurora displays.

NASA Continues Its Shameless Role As Chicken Little
Earlier in June 2010, NASA put out similar warnings about such solar storms. Dr. Richard Fisher, director of NASA’s Heliophysics Division warned Britain they faced, …widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation space storm. It will disrupt communication devices such as satellites and car navigations, air travel, the banking system, our computers, everything that is electronic. It will cause major problems for the world.Large areas will be without electricity power and to repair that damage will be hard as that takes time. Some of these events are possible and have occurred before, but nothing with such widespread impact has occurred. Why is NASA making such alarmist statements? It’s a pattern of that agency, especially about global warming from James Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS). His involvement goes beyond scaring people to open political activity and modifying the official record. After all the threats, Dr. Fisher provides his escape clause, We know it is coming but we don’t know how bad it is going to be.Is NASA prepared to cover costs incurred by his alarmism? People have dealt with the impact of Solar Flares over the years. NASA claims increased frequency in the future, but this is only true because the natural sunspot pattern continues. Cycle 24 (Cycle 1 was in 1755) is underway and will continue to a peak through 2013. The prediction is for sunspot activity to decrease to levels associated with the Dalton Minimum from 1790 to 1830 (Figure 2) and that means a cooler world. It began in 2000 and continues with more severe condition reported every month. Merco Press headline for August 4, 2010 says, Snow in Brazil, below zero Celsius in the River Plate and tropical fish frozen. Is NASA diverting attention from the public’s growing awareness of the role of the Sun in global warming and climate change? They’ve drifted a long way from when they were doing good non-political climate science with publication of Sun, Weather, and Climate by Herman and Goldberg in 1978. The best book on these relationships since, is The Maunder Minimum and the Variable Sun-Earth Connection by Willie Soon and Steven Yaskell. Willie Soon is at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and has published extensively. He was attacked by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and by Obama’s science advisor John Holdren.

Historical Relationships
Edmond Halley, the astronomer famous for predicting the return of the Comet that bears his name, was born in 1656 and died in 1742. This time span is coincident with two significant periods of low solar activity and low global temperatures. There were virtually no sunspots from 1645 to 1720 in a period known as the Maunder Minimum (Figure 2). It’s coincident with the coldest period of the Little Ice Age (LIA) beginning in 1650. The world has warmed since not due to CO2, but increasing solar activity as the graph indicates. Now, solar activity is declining and global temperatures will decline, in contradiction to claims of official science touted by NASA. There were virtually no aurora borealis (Northern Lights) or Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) during the Maunder Minimum because they’re created by mechanisms related to sunspot activity. Halley knew about sunspots and aurora from the scientific literature, but had never seen them. He was thrilled when late in his career the Royal Society commissioned him to travel to Scotland to confirm reports of aurora. He began his report in the Philosophical Transactions of the Society by praising God for allowing him to live long enough to witness them and how he was astonished at this surprising sight.Figure 2: Plot of Sunspot numbers. 11-year cycle evident. Source: Wikipedia.Soon and Yaskell point out that connections between sunspots and weather go back 3,200 years to ancient China. Theophrastus, student to Aristotle also spoke of sunspots and linked them to precipitation 2,400 years ago.

They’re talking about sunspots, but how are they related to aurora? Sunspots and associated Solar Flares are visible evidence of changes in the Sun. Charged particles emanating from the Sun stream toward Earth and interact with the earth’s magnetic field. This flow, known as the Solar Wind, varies in strength as the number of Sunspots and Flares vary. The charged particles are funneled along the lines of magnetic force, become concentrated where the lines dip in to the Poles. They collide with and excite gases of the upper atmosphere creating the auroral ring in Figure 1. The excited gases glow with the color determined by the gas; nitrogen produces red aurora and oxygen almost white through yellow to green. This is similar to a neon tube in which the color is determined by the gas excited by passing an electric current through it.

Empirical Evidence Confirmed
People were aware of the correlation between Sunspots, Aurora and weather, for a long time. Some cultures used the aurora to make weather forecasts. For example, a scientific expedition led by Henry Youle Hind, across Canada on September 19, 1858 records an Ojibwa Indian prediction. We arrived at the mouth of the river at 10 a.m., and hastened to avail ourselves of a southeast wind just to rise. Last night the aurora was very beautiful, and extended far beyond the zenith, leading the voyageurs to predict a windy day. The notion prevails with them that when the aurora is low, the following day will be calm: when high, stormy. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and NASA ignore the correlation because they say there’s no plausible mechanism of cause and effect. This changed in the 1990s with Svensmark’s cosmic theory in which changes in the Sun that trigger sunspots were related to changes in the strength of the magnetic field. This controls the amount of cosmic radiation reaching the lower atmosphere where it creates cloud. As low cloud cover varies, the global temperature varies. It’s time NASA, the IPCC and other government agencies concerned with the atmosphere shift their gaze from the swamp that is politics to the heavens that are the harbinger of understanding and the future climate.

If Humans are Responsible for Global Warming, How Come No One Can Tell Me Why? By Fred Dardick Monday, August 9, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

I’m sure many of you have run into a similar situation. You’re having a conversation with a true believer and no matter what you say they insist humans are responsible for global warming. Perfectly reasonable arguments like the Earth is a complex system and at any given point in time it is likely to be heating or cooling and solar and ocean cycles have a far greater influence on global temperatures than atmospheric CO2 concentration, just doesn’t matter to some people. A couple months ago I had an exchange on a Greenpeace website regarding this issue with a volunteer named Juliette. Though a clearly capable individual, and a representative of the environmental movement pushing for CO2 emission regulations, I was able to stump her with a very simple question: Can you tell me, in easily understandable language, what scientific data exists that proves manmade carbon dioxide (CO2) is responsible for global warming? Juliette had no idea this was a trick question. I had recently reviewed a number of alarmist websites to see if I could find a single valid argument supporting global warming theories—I tried to keep an open mind about it besides, it gave me the chance to put my BS and MS degrees in biology to work for the first time in years—and saw for myself that no such compelling evidence existed. Plenty of theories, sure, but years of scientific training tell you the only thing that matters is data. Gut feelings don’t count and there is no second place prize for trying. Besides, if a CO2 smoking gun was out there, I’m pretty sure we all would know about it by now.I’ve read books on 11 dimensional string theory that a layperson could understand, but I have yet to find a plausible explanation for how a small molecule like CO2, present in only 390 parts per million in the atmosphere, could possibly warm an entire planet.

Juliette’s answer was a good effort, if simplistic. She pointed out the greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824 and greenhouse gas properties of CO2 were discovered by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. Not bad for a novice, though her examples were a bit dated.I responded there were other atmospheric molecules present in greater concentrations than CO2, most importantly water vapor, which were far more powerful greenhouse contributors, so what made her so sure that only CO2 mattered when it came to global temperature variation? This is where her argument broke down. Rather than rely on scientific reasoning, which of course she had none because none existed, she accused me of asking for a university course in the climate sciences and to sum up years of data in a few sentences…would be dishonest. This is of course the default response for most global warming proponents: If you don’t believe in it, you’re stupid and don’t bother asking me for the details, because I don’t know… but I’m still smarter than you.I couldn’t help but point out the absurdity of her argument: What you are saying is, in effect, that you personally have no idea how or why CO2 is responsible for global warming. As I said in my previous post, none of you do. Good luck with defending a theory you do not understand and have no way of articulating.Observers of the exchange jumped in to say that Juliette should reconsider her allegiance to an organization pushing an unproven and impossible to explain theory. Even though she put up a good front for Greenpeace and exchanged 20-30 messages with other skeptics like myself, she had no come back for that and soon afterwards the thread was shut down.

Pump out alarmist rhetoric in order to scare people into line and keep the grant money flowing. What people like Juliette cannot comprehend, is they have been brainwashed into supporting a theory they do not understand and furthermore has no scientific basis. The so-called proof that CO2 is responsible for global warming comes from computer simulations developed by specialists, many of whom have ulterior motives and often refuse to share their data with others for independent verification, an important and necessary part of the scientific process. All scientists know that if a theory isn’t independently verified, it isn’t proven. If their computer models were truly reliable, then we wouldn’t be talking about simulations in the plural form, but rather a singular simulation that could accurately predict global warming and cooling patterns that match geological history. To date, no such simulation exists. What we have here is the equivalent of climate scientists following their gut feelings, or more accurately lucrative funding opportunities, when it comes to the study of human caused CO2 warming. They pump out alarmist rhetoric in order to scare people into line and keep the grant money flowing. To say scientists can accurately predict the effects of CO2 atmospheric concentration on global temperatures is not science, it is guesswork and should be treated by the public with the same respect as arguments proving the existence of UFOs and ghosts.

The Carbon Prayer By Peter C. Glover Monday, August 9, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

It’s not been a good year for the followers of man-made carbon dioxide as key driver of global temperature theory. Not least because the seemingly inexorable upward trend of global CO2 emissions (courtesy of the fast-industrializing nations) shows no signs of abating while global temperatures persist in flat-lining, even falling. But hey, let’s not let scientific fact interfere with a good computer-generated, speculative global scare story. After a year of broadsides from SS Climate-gate, Himalaya-gate, Glacier-gate et al the credibility of the UN’s flagship IPCC has pretty much sunk to zero; Al Gore buying his second super-CO2-emitting mansion; with Michael Mann being forced out of the hockey game (after his integrity went lame), believers are clinging tenaciously to their faith. Now, just as BP caps the oil, the ultimate humiliation as Senate majority leader Harry Reid introduces a pared down energy bill formally signaling the death of another cap, that of carbon emissions. Thus America has effectively abandoned any meaningful contribution to the carbon war.In truth, the war was over before it began. China (opening a new coal-fired power station every week), India and Brazil were always going to see to that. But, just like the Japanese soldiers who fought on in remote islands in WW2, the anti-CO2 brigade has still to get the message.

One of the most powerful religions in the Western world is environmentalism
Science writer Michael Crichton summed the syndrome up best:Today, one of the most powerful religions in the Western world is environmentalism. Environmentalism seems to be the religion of choice for urban atheists. Why do I say it’s a religion? Well, just look at the beliefs. If you look carefully, you see that environmentalism is in fact a perfect 21st century remapping of traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs. There’s an initial Eden, a paradise, a state of grace and unity with nature, there’s a fall from grace into a state of pollution as a result of eating from the tree of knowledge, and as a result of our actions there is a judgment day coming for all of us. We are all energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability. Sustainability is salvation in the church of environment. Just as organic food is its communion, that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs, imbibe.Increasingly it seems facts aren’t necessary, because the tenets of environmentalism are all about belief.Bizzare, is it not, in an age when we live longer, healthier, less polluted lives than former generations, we the people have become wracked with angst, perpetually ill at ease, obsessed with personal welfare and health and one way or another doomed ever to be in fear of the weather gods? Even though alleged climate experts cannot tell us with confidence what the weather will be next week, they can confidently predict what it will be like in 50 years time – based on computer guesswork.Even so, for those still blindly fighting on against an imaginary enemy, we should at least show some empathy, as for any suckered into cult-like beliefs.Amongst the pseudo-religious anti-CO2 liturgy, I note, as an English churchman myself, the singular omission of a suitable iconic creedal ‘teaching’ prayer; a prayer that can be said as a daily office to appease the weather gods (and thus avoid another Katrina).Thomas Cranmer I may not be, but perhaps I can be allowed to make a humble offering for use on the floor of the US Senate and House (probably where it belongs) – and beyond – when debating the carbon war next resumes. So, if we might all kneel (we don’t want to upset Mother Gaia, do we?) and say with solemn reverence:

The Carbon Prayer

Our Carbon, which art increasing
Evil be thy Name
CO2 emissions shun
That Gore’s will be done
On earth, that we may go to heaven
Give us today our media-induced dread
And forgive how our eco-nonsense has misled
As we forgive them who warn Green is the new Red
And lead us not into Climate-gate upheaval
But deliver us from warming periods medieval
Though the science be lacking,
Send deniers packing
All sense to sever.

If this is Obama Act 3, hate to see what the finalé brings
By Judi McLeod Sunday, August 8, 2010 CANADA FREE PRESS

Everything Obama comes with a sting, including each of their many vacations. Michelle’s 60-room deluxe hotel stay, 15-limo entourage throughout the southern region of Andalusia including Marbella, is a case in point. Momma Marxist 1 returns from her vacation in Spain today in time to pack her bags for her next one in Massachusetts.Pulling her Marie Antoinette routine in Marbella could be the script for How I Spent my Summer Vacation as a Malcontent Community Organizer.Everything the Obamas do comes with a slap in the face for those they consider their lessers. And in the case of the get-even, self-centered arrogant Obamas, everybody else is a lesser. The present occupants of the White House are far different than the people they purport to lead. Patriotic Americans are driven by love of God, country and family. Love of God for Obama includes the odd text message sent via his Blackberry. The whole world knows by now that he has no love for the country that elected him to power, and his love for family, aside from half-brothers living in huts, could only be categorized as private. Is Michelle the 19 months-in latest prop in Obama’s Demoralize America agenda?

Other than her well touted crusade against childhood obesity, Michelle has largely been left to moulder in the background. With so many people going hungry and so many more Americans now having to rely on food stamps, childhood obesity could be the wrong cause to champion and get her the attention she craves.Easy to grab headlines with a mainstream media ready, willing and able to advance your cause, but you can’t grab the respect of the masses. The only respect the Obamas get both at home and abroad is the respect that comes from orders and by force. In Spain, it was the forced closing off of a public beach by police, forcing captive audiences to become gawkers. Obama and his minions accuse their political enemies of clinging to the past. Yet his campaign for president has never really ended. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee send us $5 by midnight campaign continued even through his 49th birthday in Chicago last week.Bet it piqued Mama Obama that most ordinary folk didn’t give a fig about her Marie Antoinette routine in Spain, being far too busy just trying to survive in a flagging American economy. It’s almost as if cheered on by the Czars and Czarinas, the Dems are now skipping merrily toward mid-term elections.Much of what Obama does is an act that comes with a painful sting. If what we’re seeing now is Act 3, hate to see what the finalé is going to bring.

Arguably, no one, save international terrorists, has tried harder to bring the final curtain down on America.Life under Obama keeps getting worse every day.Gather your loved ones around you and pray, brothers and sisters, pray.

1,100 missing in China as Asian flood misery rises By DAVID WIVELL, Associated Press Writer - AUG 9,10

ZHOUQU, China – Rescuers lifted muddy bodies into trucks, and aid convoys choked the road into the remote Chinese town where hundreds died and more than 1,100 were missing Monday from landslides caused by heavy rain that has flooded swaths of Asia and spread misery to millions. In Pakistan, the United Nations said the government's estimate of 13.8 million people affected by the country's worst-ever floods exceeded the combined total of three recent megadisasters — the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.Rescuers in mountainous Indian-controlled Kashmir raced to rescue dozens of stranded foreign trekkers and find 500 people still missing in flash floods that have killed 140.In China, the death toll jumped to 337 late Monday after Sunday's landslides in the northwestern province of Gansu — the deadliest incident so far in the country's worst flooding in a decade. A debris-blocked swollen river burst, swamping entire mountain villages in the county seat of Zhouqu and ripping homes from their foundations. There were some, but very few, survivors. Most of them are dead, crushed into the earth, said survivor Guo Wentao. Associated Press Television News showed the bodies of his younger brother and sister, wrapped in quilts, being carried away on a stretcher as crying relatives followed. The government said 1,148 were missing Monday night. About 45,000 were evacuated. It was not known how many of the missing were in danger or simply out of contact as workers rushed to restore communications in the area, where one-third of residents are ethnic Tibetan.

More rain is expected in the region over the next three days, the China Meteorological Administration said. On Monday evening, clouds were building ominously over the mountains where the mud started flowing. We were dumbfounded by the enormity of the flood situation when we got to the scene, said Chen Junfeng, a disinfection specialist whose army battalion was the first on the scene Sunday.
Photos showed wrapped bodies tied to sticks or placed on planks and left on the shattered streets for pickup. APTN footage showed workers lifting an empty coffin. In many parts of rural China, coffins are bought as insurance for old age. We're saving you! Premier Wen Jiabao shouted into the wreckage, as shown on state broadcaster China Central Television. Is a child still down there? Take good care of the child! Hoping to prevent further disasters, demolitions experts set off charges to clear debris blocking the Bailong River upstream from the ravaged Zhouqu. The blockage had formed a 2-mile (3-kilometer)-long artificial lake on the river that overflowed before dawn Sunday, sending deadly torrents crashing down onto the town.

Flooding in China has killed more than 1,100 people this year and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage across 28 provinces and regions. In Pakistan, two weeks of flooding have killed 1,500.It looks like the number of people affected in this crisis is higher than the Haiti earthquake, the tsunami or the Pakistan earthquake, and if the toll is as high as the one given by the government, it's higher than the three of them combined, Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told The Associated Press. The U.N. estimates that 13.8 million people have been affected by the Pakistan flooding — over 2 million more than the other disasters combined. The figures include people who need short-term or long-term aid.Rescue workers have been unable to reach up to 600,000 people marooned in the northwestern Swat Valley, where many residents were still trying to recover from an intense battle between the army and the Taliban last spring, Giuliano said. The magnitude of the tragedy is so immense that it is hard to assess, said Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani during a visit to the central Pakistani city of Multan.Heavy rains continued. Rising national anger has been directed at an already unpopular government that has deployed thousands of soldiers for aid but has been overwhelmed itself.

Manzoor Ahmed, 25, was one of thousands of people who fled their homes in Sindh province in the south. It would have been better if we had died in the floods as our current miserable life is much more painful, said Ahmed, who spent the night shivering in the rain. Thousands of Pakistanis in the neighboring districts of Shikarpur and Sukkur camped out on roads, bridges and railway tracks — any dry ground they could find. I have no utensils. I have no food for my children. I have no money, said Hora Mai, 40, sitting on a rain-soaked road in Sukkur along with hundreds of other people. We were able to escape the floodwaters, but hunger may kill us.A senior government official in Sukkur, Inamullah Dhareejo, said authorities were working to set up relief camps. But an Associated Press reporter who traveled widely through the worst-hit areas in Sindh over the past three days saw no sign of relief camps or government assistance.Meanwhile, the death toll from flash floods in the remote desert mountainsides in Indian-controlled Kashmir rose to 140 with the recovery of eight more bodies overnight, police said Monday. The dead included five foreigners, but their nationalities were not immediately known. An estimated 500 more people were missing.

Further east, thousands of army, police and paramilitary soldiers continued clearing roads to reach isolated villages in the Ladakh region cut off by Friday's powerful thunderstorms. By late afternoon on Monday, the roads leading to the worst affected village, Choglamsar, had been cleared and rescue teams looked for survivors among the flattened buildings, army spokesman Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said. On Monday, Indian air force helicopters evacuated 80 stranded foreign tourists from Zanaskar, a popular trekking area. Those rescued included British, French, Dutch and Germans, an army statement said. At least 33 of the missing include Indian army soldiers from a remote base who may have been washed into Pakistan-controlled Kashmir in the fast flowing Indus river, said Brig. S. Chawla, a senior official in Indian Kashmir. He said Indian officials had informed their Pakistani counterparts to help verify those reports. In North Korea, some 10,000 people were sheltering in public buildings in the border city of Sinuiju near China due to flooding, the Red Cross said Monday. Flash floods destroyed thousands of homes across the impoverished country, and the Amnok River had recorded its highest water level in 15 years, Red Cross said.
Associated Press writers Ashraf Khan in Sukkur, Pakistan, Aijaz Hussain in Indian-controlled Kashmir and Jean H. Lee in Seoul contributed to this report.

Pakistan Floods Show No Sign of Let Up
Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN)- AUG 9,10

PESHAWAR, Aug 8 (IRIN) - For the past 10 days, torrential monsoon rainfall has killed more than 1,600 people inflicted widesperad damage across the country, with the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) suffering the greatest losses, federal authorities and aid agencies say. Estimates vary over the number of people affected by the floods. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on 8 August four million had been affected, while some media reports suggest up to 14 million. Unrelenting downpours continue to limit relief efforts and have grounded helicopters in KP, leaving thousands of people cut off in areas where roads and bridges have been swept away. Worse could lie ahead. More rains are expected and this could affect people in low-lying areas,Mian Iftikhar Hussain, KP information minister, told IRIN.According to KP local authorities, Charsadda is the worst-affected district in KP.Around one million people are affected, District Coordination Officer Kamranur Rehman Khan told the media on 8 August. He said half of these people were very vulnerable. Those who made it out of Charsadda to provincial capital Peshawar on restored roads said there were severe shortages of potable water there, low food stocks and dead animals lying in stagnant water.

It’s just impossible to live there. Government officials are helping only their own supporters. Our house has been virtually destroyed and the camps are dismal,Umair Khan, from Umerzai, the worst-hit union council (administrative unit) in Charsadda, told IRIN.Most people are just occupying any high ground they can find and more and more are falling sick,Sanitary conditions in the Nowshera and Charsadda districts of KP have been described by aid workers as alarming.

As bad as 2005 earthquake

Some have said that although the death toll is far lower; this disaster is as bad as Pakistan’s 2005 earthquake, which killed some 73,000 people.Tragically, we will see more deaths due to sickness. People are in a miserable state. In some places conditions are even worse than after the 2005 Kashmir quake, the aftermath of which I saw, and the lack of existing infrastructure to meet basic needs aggravates matters, said a French aid worker in Nowshera who asked not to be named. He said there was a desperate need for more funds, more resources and more personnel to cope with the human catastrophe.Maurizio Guiliano, Public Information Officer OCHA in Pakistan, said funds were coming in but more will be required. This is a very major disaster, on the same scale as the earthquake of 2005. Immediately, there is a need for shelter. The number of plastic sheets and other supplies are simply not enough. In the longer run people will need support for quite some months,” he told IRIN from Islamabad.

Punjab damage

In a 7 August press release, OCHA said 1.6 million people had been affected in the eastern province of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province with more than half its 160 million population living there. It is also the country’s bread basket. An estimated 84,000 homes have been destroyed, leaving up to 500,000 people homeless in the province,OCHA said, adding that at least 1.4 million acres of agricultural land had been destroyed in Punjab, threatening the food security of millions.More evacuations continue from the province, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). We have seen land vanish before our eyes. Vegetables we grew for our family have been destroyed. I have lost hens and sheep too. Things are desperate,Aziz Muhammad, a farmer from Muzaffargarh district in southern Punjab, told IRIN over the phone.

Sindh alert

Flooding has reached the southern province of Sindh after residents there had been on high alert for days. Local authorities say Sukkur is the worst-affected district.

Amid evidence of rising panic in the face of floods described by NDMA Chairman Lt-Gen Nadeem Ahmed as the worst ever in the country’s history, Sindh irrigation minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo admitted a dyke near the town of Ghouspur had been deliberately breached to release pressure from other dykes. He conceded that this led to the inundation of several more villages, but said otherwise the towns of Ghouspur and Karampur were under threat. The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority said it had evacuated at least 150,000 people, but said many were refusing to budge. Others are reported to be leaving homes near rivers, with large areas in Sukkur and other parts of Upper Sindh inundated. The situation is looking very bad. People basically have nowhere to go because the camps set up are limited, said Latif Hussain, a volunteer for local NGO Edhi Foundation in the Sukkur area.

Central Europe faces massive flood cleanup By VANESSA GERA, Associated Press Writer – Mon Aug 9, 11:46 am ET

WARSAW, Poland – Swollen rivers surged north Monday in central Europe after carving a swath of destruction across Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated and one monastery suffered the worst flood damage in almost 800 years.Days of flooding have killed at least 11 people in central Europe and damaged hundreds of homes and businesses. The southwestern Polish town of Bogatynia, on the border with the Czech Republic, was one of the worst-hit areas. Video from the TVN24 news station showed roads that were torn up, rubble strewn all over and heavy damage to many homes. One house was left tilting badly.A bridge in the town was also badly damaged, and soldiers had to set up a temporary crossing to bring in food and other supplies.TVN24 reported that some vendors were taking advantage of food shortages and charging 20 zlotys ($6.60) for a loaf of bread, far above the usual price. In Germany, the situation was most critical in the state of Saxony, along the Neisse River, which forms the border with Poland. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated.

We will have massive damage to the infrastructure, but of course also to private property,Saxony governor Stanislaw Tillich said. He asked Polish authorities to explain how a retaining dam on their side broke down, making the situation worse, the German news agency DAPD reported.A 775-year-old Cistercian monastery near the Neisse, St. Marienthal, was also flooded and the diocese said the damage will likely reach several million euros (dollars).Inside the church, the water was about two meters (6 feet) high, a statement said, calling it the worst flooding since the monastery's founding in 1234.The Neisse was expected to top 23 feet (7 meters)_ nearly 15 feet (4.5 meters) above its normal level. Some 1,400 people in the region were evacuated over the weekend, and more than 500 have not yet been able to return to their houses, the German news agency DDP reported. In Bad Muskau, an eastern German spa town on the border with Poland, the grounds of the Fuerst Pueckler Park — a UNESCO world heritage site — flooded, but damage to the castle and the town itself appeared limited, officials said.South of Bad Muskau, a dike broke and flooded houses in two villages, but no one was hurt because 100 residents had been evacuated.

As the floods traveled further north, officials worried about waters reaching the Spree River, which runs through Berlin. There were no flood warnings yet for the German capital, however. In the Czech Republic, waters receded Monday and cleanup efforts were under way, helped by more than 300 soldiers. Almost 1,000 Czech households were still without electricity and about 4,000 were without natural gas. Hundreds of houses and dozens of bridges have been destroyed or badly damaged.Damage in the Czech Republic is estimated to reach almost 4 billion koruna ($215 million). In northeastern Europe, Lithuania was hit over the weekend by a heavy storm that killed four people as it toppled trees, wrecked cars and smashed roofs. Associated Press Writers Juergen Baetz in Berlin and Karel Janicek in Prague contributed to this report.

North Korea fires artillery near disputed border By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press Writer - AUG 9,10

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea fired about 110 rounds of artillery Monday near its disputed sea border with South Korea, the South's military said, amid high tension over the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea. The firing came shortly after South Korea ended five-day naval drills off the west coast that the North called a rehearsal for an invasion, vowing to retaliate. All the artillery shells harmlessly landed into the North's waters and caused no damage to the South, a South Korean Joint Chief of Staff officer said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.South Korea considered the firing to be part of a military drill by North Korea but still bolstered its military readiness against further provocation, the officer said. The South also warned Pyongyang over the firing by naval radio, he said. This was their way of saying We'll respond to military drills with military drills, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul's University of North Korean studies.Yang said the firing is also aimed at highlighting the instability of the Korean peninsula to apply pressure on the United States to start talks on the signing of a peace treaty to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War. The conflict ended with an armistice, thus leaving the peninsula technically at state of war.

A U.S. State Department spokesman denounced North Korea's firing of artillery even as he joked that it resulted in a lot of dead fish. P.J. Crowley also said that the firing is unhelpful and that based on North Korea's past actions we're likely to see more provocations. He said it is unclear what North Korea is trying to achieve through this ongoing chest-thumping.North Korea has long sought a peace treaty and diplomatic relations with Washington to guarantee that the U.S., which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, would not invade and topple Kim Jong Il's government. The U.S. has repeatedly said it has no intention of attacking the North.Tension on the Korean peninsula is running high in the wake of the March sinking of the South Korean warship that an international investigation blamed on a North Korean torpedo attack. The North flatly denies the accusation and has warned any punishment would trigger war.Tension deepened last week when South Korea launched large-scale naval training in response to the sinking, prompting its communist neighbor to warn it would counter the maneuvers with a strong physical retaliation. On Sunday, North Korean authorities also seized four South Korean and three Chinese fishermen aboard a 41-ton South Korean fishing boat for an alleged violation of the North's exclusive economic zone. South Korea has demanded the North quickly release them but the North has not responded.China — the North's main benefactor and traditional ally — expressed concern over news of the seizure but said its diplomats in North Korea are verifying the report with local authorities, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Monday night.Once the incident is confirmed, the North Koreans should treat the Chinese crew members well, guarantee their rights and inform Chinese officials, Xinhua reported, citing consulate officials in Chongjin, North Korea. The South Korean naval drills, which ended on Monday afternoon, followed large-scale joint military exercises with the U.S. last month off the east coast. The South Korean drills included exercises near the western sea border where the warship Cheonan exploded and sank, killing 46 sailors. The area is also where the navies of the rival Koreas have fought three bloody gunbattles since 1999.Associated Press writers Sangwon Yoon in Seoul and Cara Anna in Beijing contributed to this report.

Dollar rises, Asian stocks slip on caution before Fed By Kevin Plumberg – AUG 9,10

HONG KONG (Reuters) – The U.S. dollar clawed higher against the euro and Asian stocks slipped on Tuesday, as investors braced for the outcome of a Federal Reserve meeting that could disappoint some looking for big policy changes.Speculation has been growing that the Fed will signal a need for more stimulus to support growth after a steady stream of soft economic figures, pushing down U.S. bond yields and helping to lift global equities to the highest in three months. However, acknowledgment of economic deceleration may disappoint some investors who had been betting the Fed would make a bigger move, such as buying bonds to pull down market rates.Over the past one week or so, there has been increasing chatter that the tone of today's Fed meeting could potentially deviate from the seemingly unexciting post-meeting announcements lately, said Thomas Lam, group chief economist with DMG & Partners Securities in Singapore.Still, the rhetoric from policymakers has not been completely uniform of late, he said in a note. With a Bank of Japan policy meeting and Chinese trade data also due on Tuesday, caution was the key word for investors.

The dollar rose 0.2 percent against a trade-weighted basket of major currencies (.DXY), bumping up against a trendline stretching down since June. The yen was also a broad gainer, rising around 0.5 percent to 113.03 per euro after a senior government official warned that sudden strength has not been good for growth. However, the Bank of Japan is not expected to make any changes to monetary policy until there are clearer signs of the negative impact of the yen. There will be a greater chance of a stronger yen if the U.S. implements steps that would likely lead to lower rates and if the BOJ keeps the status quo, said Hiroaki Kuramochi, chief equity marketing officer at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

STOCKS REFLECT CAUTION AHEAD OF FED

On a rare day when both the yen and Japanese stocks rose, the Nikkei share average was up 0.6 percent (.N225) as investors bought back counters they had sold on Monday.
The MSCI index of Asia Pacific stocks outside Japan fell 0.4 percent (.MIAPJ0000PUS) after hitting a three-month high on Monday.Consumer discretionary stocks, a popular bet on long-term growth in consumption in Asia, were the hardest hit, with profit taking the main driver. The sector is still the top performer in Asia ex-Japan so far this year, up 7.8 percent since January. The telecommunications sector is the second-best performer, up 6.5 percent.

Energy is in last place, down 5.9 percent.

Developed government bond markets were mixed, with 10-year bond futures in Japan and Australia down slightly and U.S. futures up a tad.The spread of the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield over the 2-year note in the cash market was at its narrowest since May 2009, with investors clinging to the higher yields of later maturity bonds. Bond market participants are split on what the Fed will do. Fifty-two percent of money managers do not expect the Fed to flag additional policy easing, while 48 percent predict it will, a Reid Thunberg ICAP survey showed. If the Fed does not strike a strong enough tone supporting growth, thereby getting closer to buying bonds from the market, the spread could widen again. The strength in the dollar weighed on U.S. crude prices. Oil for September delivery reversed earlier gains and slipped 0.3 percent to $81.23 a barrel ahead of data due later expected to show a decline in U.S. crude inventories. Gold was largely unchanged on the day, trading at $1,200 an ounce, ahead of the Fed.The precious metal is still heading for its 10th straight year of gains.(Additional reporting by Aiko Hayashi in TOKYO; Editing by Neil Fullick)

Significant chance of recession next 2 years: SF Fed
Mon Aug 9, 3:03 pm ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) – There is a significant chance the U.S. economy will slip back into recession in the next two years although a reversal is unlikely in the next few months, researchers at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank said on Monday. The probability of another recession over the next 18 to 24 months is higher than that of expansion, researchers said in the latest issue of the regional Fed bank's Economic Letter.Concern has risen in recent months that the United States might be headed for a double-dip recession as measures of consumer spending and confidence have dropped and private company hiring has fallen short of expectations. The soft economic data will be top of mind tomorrow when members of the Fed's monetary policy-setting committee meet. Recent comments from Fed officials signal strong disagreement over whether the Fed -- the U.S. central bank -- should move to offer further support to the economy than it already has.The researchers -- Travis Berge, a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, and Oscar Jorda, a professor there as well as a visiting scholar at the San Francisco Fed -- used leading economic indicators to try to predict the possibility of a renewed economic downturn. The experiment yielded vastly different results, depending on which indicators were used. But overall, they said, the numbers indicate that the macroeconomic outlook is likely to deteriorate progressively starting sometime next summer.Of course, economic policy can strongly influence the outcome, the researchers said. The policies that are adopted today could play a decisive role in shaping the pace of growth.(Reporting by Ann Saphir; Editing by James Dalgleish)

Gulf relief well down to final, tricky 100 feet By JEFFREY COLLINS, Associated Press Writer - AUG 9,10

NEW ORLEANS – The relief well being drilled to ensure crude never again spills into the ocean from BP's paralyzed well in the Gulf of Mexico has been dubbed the ultimate solution to the drama that's unfolded over the past three months. It's the final, suspenseful act as one man guides a drill more than two miles beneath the sea floor and three miles from the surface, trying to hit a target less than half the size of a dartboard. The drill is about as wide as a grapefruit, and the target now lies less than 100 feet away.If John Wright misses, other BP engineers will pull the drill bit up, pour concrete in the off-track hole and then try again. Wright is 40-for-40 , though, having helped capped wells across the world in four decades of engineering work. And he seemed confident in a June video put out by BP that he could make it 41-for-41.Out of 40 relief wells that I've drilled, we've never missed yet, said Wright. I've got high confidence we will take care of this problem as soon as we can get there.Work began during the weekend to finish drilling the well, and company and government officials say they could hit their target as early as Friday. If it hits, engineers will perform a bottom kill by pouring in mud and cement to permanently seal the blown-out well that's spewed an estimated 207 million gallons since April. In three months, the relief well has been run more than 17,900 feet from its rig. But drilling the final stretch, a section slightly longer than the distance from third base to home on a baseball field, will be a time-consuming and careful process.Crews dig about 20 to 30 feet at a time, then run electric current through the relief well. The current creates a magnetic field in the pipe of the busted well, allowing engineers to calculate exactly where and how far they need to drill.

A static kill last week pushed mud and cement into the top of the crippled well, leaving very little chance oil could leak into the Gulf again, said retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government's point man overseeing the cleanup operation. Neither he nor BP officials have been willing to declare victory yet — but Allen said that day isn't far off. This step, in our view, will permanently seal the well, he said Monday.Finishing a relief well can be tricky. It took five tries last fall for crews trying to stop a blown well in Australia to hit the target. But the area around this well has been thoroughly mapped and carefully tracked, said Eric Smith, associate director of the Tulane Energy Institute.I think they know exactly where they need to go, Smith said.I think they can get this on the first try.BP, however, has only emphasized the caution being used and won't talk about its chances of hitting the target the first time.We are doing everything we can to ensure success, company spokesman John Curry said.

As engineers work to finish the relief well, Allen is planning a three-day trip to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama this week to talk with local officials about how to speed up cleanup efforts as the peak of hurricane season approaches.BP and the Coast Guard currently are keeping an eye on thunderstorms over Florida that forecasters say should move across the Gulf near the site of the leak this week. They say the system has a small chance of becoming a tropical storm, but there are no plans yet to suspend drilling operations.Meanwhile Monday, BP announced it has spent $6.1 billion responding to the spill since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon killed 11 workers, sending the rig to the bottom of the sea and oil spewing 5,000 feet underwater. Also, the Justice Department and BP announced they have finished negotiations to implement a $20 billion fund for victims of the Gulf oil spill and that BP has made a $3 billion initial deposit. The spill has taken its toll on the tourism and seafood industries, but there have been encouraging signs that things are returning to normal. Fishing waters have started to reopen. Beaches begun reopening this weekend on Grand Isle, a popular vacation spot on a Louisiana barrier island, after closing in May. It's certainly a sign of recovery, Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said Monday. The sad part is the busiest time of year for Grand Isle is typically between May and September.Associated Press writers Kevin McGill in New Orleans and Pete Yost in Washington contributed to this report.

Israel threatening to quit UN probe into flotilla By MARK LAVIE, Associated Press Write – Mon Aug 9, 5:39 pm ET

JERUSALEM – Israel threatened Monday to pull out of a U.N. inquiry into a deadly raid on a Turkish flotilla heading for Gaza, after the U.N. chief said there is no agreement that the panel would refrain from calling Israeli soldiers to testify.Last week Israel agreed to participate in the U.N. probe into the May 31 raid, when nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed after Israeli naval commandos boarded a Turkish vessel aiming to break Israel's sea blockade of Gaza. The surprise development came just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu testified before his country's own inquiry into the raid. He charged that Turkey had an interest in the violent confrontation, refusing to exert its influence to stop the flotilla. A Turkish official rejected that as ridiculous.Israeli officials said the agreement to take part in the U.N. probe was conditional on the panel relying on reports from Israel's own military inquiry, not testimony from soldiers. But at a Monday news conference at U.N. headquarters, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was asked whether he had agreed not to summon Israeli soldiers before the panel. No, there was no such agreement behind the scenes, Ban said, adding that the panel is supposed to work with the Israeli and Turkish inquiries. And whatever is needed beyond that, they will have to discuss among themselves, in close coordination with the national government authorities, that they can take their own future steps,he said.

In response, the Israeli Prime Minister's office issued a harsh statement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu makes it absolutely clear that Israel will not cooperate with and will not take part in any panel that seeks to interrogate Israeli soldiers, it said.Israel's agreement to join the probe represented a change in its policy of boycotting U.N. inquiries, considering the world body and its committees biased. This time, however, the international outcry against the deadly raid and the spotlight it turned on Israel's punishing three-year blockade on Gaza appeared to give it little choice but to cooperate.Israel appointed a retired senior diplomat, Joseph Ciechanover, to join the U.N. panel and was preparing for the start of its deliberations on Tuesday when Ban made his remark, throwing plans into turmoil.A senior Israeli official said the advance agreement with Ban was that requests for additional information or clarifications from the panel would be routed through the Israeli representative, and soldiers would not be called for testimony. This was and remains a vital condition for Israeli participation in the panel, he said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he went beyond the government statement. This appeared to leave the door open for Israel to resume its cooperation if soldiers are exempted from testifying. At the Israeli inquiry, Netanyahu gave his version of the events leading up to the clash at sea.As we got closer to the date it became clear our diplomatic efforts would not stop it, Netanyahu said. Apparently the government of Turkey did not see potential friction between Turkish activists and Israel as something that goes against its interests.Suat Kiniklioglu, A member of the Turkish parliament's foreign affairs committee, charged that Netanyahu's contention that Turkey was interested in a confrontation is not only ridiculous but constitutes an affront to our intelligence. Kiniklioglu said the real problem, which still remains, is Israel's inhumane blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Israel has released video footage showing the commandos being pummeled with wooden planks and metal rods as they landed on the ship. The pro-Palestinian activists on board the Mavi Marmara have said they acted in self-defense after Israeli troops boarded their boat in international waters. The five-member Israeli commission, headed by a retired Supreme Court justice and joined by two foreign observers, is looking into the government's decision-making leading up to the raid. Although it does not have the power to mete out punishment, its findings could be politically damaging to Netanyahu and other top officials.Israel's defense minister is scheduled to face the Israeli inquiry on Tuesday, to be followed by the military chief. The five-member commission is headed by retired Israeli Supreme Court Justice Jacob Turkel. Beside Turkel, 75, the commission includes a retired general, Amos Horev, 86, and Shabtai Rosenne, a 93-year-old international jurist and diplomat. International pressure led Israel's government to include two foreign observers: David Trimble, a Nobel peace laureate from Northern Ireland, and Brig. Gen. Ken Watkin, Canada's former chief military prosecutor. A separate Israeli military inquiry found that military intelligence had failed to predict the violent response on board the Turkish vessel, and troops went in unprepared, expecting only passive resistance. But it said the commandos had acted properly. Associated Press writers Aron Heller in Jerusalem and Ceren Kumova in Ankara, Turkey and John Heilprin at the United Nations contributed to this report.

IAEA: Iran activates enrichment equipment By VERONIKA OLEKSYN, Associated Press Writer – Mon Aug 9, 4:35 pm ET

VIENNA – Iran has activated equipment to enrich uranium more efficiently in a move that defies the U.N. Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Monday. The Vienna-based nuclear watchdog said Iran has started using a second set of 164 centrifuges linked in a cascade, or string of machines, to enrich uranium to up to 20 percent at its Natanz pilot fuel enrichment plant. Another cascade there has been producing uranium enriched to near 20 percent since February. If enriched to around 95 percent, uranium can be used in building a nuclear bomb. At 20 percent, it can be turned into weapons-grade material much more quickly than less-enriched uranium.Tehran denies it has such aims and says its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes only. But some in the international community — the United States and its allies — aren't convinced.IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said that when agency inspectors visited the facility on July 17, Iran was feeding nuclear material to the two interconnected 164-machine centrifuge cascades. This, she added, was "contrary to U.N. Security Council resolutions affirming that Iran should suspend all enrichment related activities. The U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran in June because of its refusal to halt uranium enrichment. Tougher unilateral U.S. and European Union sanctions followed in July.Iran had informed the IAEA in March of its intentions to link the two cascades, Tudor said. The move upgrades the efficiency of production by recycling the waste now being left by the first cascade to squeeze out more enriched uranium at near 20-percent levels, diplomats said in May when they disclosed to The Associated Press that Iranian technicians had assembled the second 164-centrifuge cascade and appeared ready to activate it.

One of the diplomats familiar with Iran's enrichment programs emphasized at the time that the idea appeared not to produce greater amounts than the first operating cascade was turning out, but to improve productivity. The IAEA's comments Monday came as Iran announced plans to get rid of its dollar and euro reserves in response to the latest U.N. sanctions over its contested nuclear program. To fight sanctions, we will remove the dollar and euro from our foreign exchange basket and will replace them with (the Iranian) rial and the currency of any country cooperating with us, Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency. We consider these currencies (dollar and euro) dirty and won't sell oil in dollar and euro, he added.Earlier Monday, a German lawmaker who recently visited Tehran said Iranian officials fear the country's international trade will suffer from the latest round of sanctions.A top Iranian adviser, meanwhile, said the Americans must be dreaming if they think they can intimidate Tehran into giving that program up.Rainer Stinner, a foreign policy specialist with Germany's Free Democrats — junior partners in the coalition government of Chancellor Angela Merkel — told The Associated Press Iranian lawmakers and government representatives he met last week in Teheran fear the sanctions will lead to decreased imports and exports.Iranians suppose that these sanctions could have a significant impact on import and export, he told the AP in a telephone interview from New Delhi. The new U.N. resolution seeks to crack down on the problem of evading sanctions and established a group of experts to gather information and analyze countries' efforts to implement them.Meanwhile, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, rejected the idea of Tehran giving up its nuclear program, insisting American threats will not deter Iran. He spoke during a trip to Syria. The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said last week the U.S. military has a plan to attack Iran, although he thinks a military strike is probably a bad idea. Still, Adm. Mike Mullen said the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon is unacceptable. Associated Press writers Juergen Baetz in Berlin, Albert Aji in Damascus, Syria, and Ali Akbar Dareini in Tehran contributed to this report.

Iran to expunge dirty dollar and euro reserves By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer – Mon Aug 9, 3:56 pm ET

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran announced plans Monday to get rid of its dollar and euro reserves in response to the latest U.N. sanctions over its contested nuclear program.

The U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran in June because of its refusal to halt uranium enrichment. Tougher unilateral U.S. and European Union sanctions followed in July.To fight sanctions, we will remove the dollar and euro from our foreign exchange basket and will replace them with (the Iranian) rial and the currency of any country cooperating with us, Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency. We consider these currencies (dollar and euro) dirty and won't sell oil in dollar and euro,he added. The United States and its allies are concerned Iran's continued uranium enrichment could ultimately produce a nuclear weapon. Iran denies this, saying it only seeks nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.Rahimi said sanctions won't deter Iran from continuing its nuclear program, and instead they are only helping it achieve technological self-sufficiency in various industries.Rahimi also attacked South Korea, saying Seoul needs to be punished for joining the global coalition of countries sanctioning Iran. The Koreans also need to be slapped, he was quoted by Fars as saying.

Ahmadinejad's government has opened Iran's doors to imports in recent years to keep consumer prices low at the expense protecting of domestic industry, but Rahimi said the government is now planning to increase tariffs on imports. We will increase tariffs by 200 percent. We will hike it so much so that no one will be able to buy foreign goods. We should not buy the products of our enemies, he said. Students can force their parents not to buy foreign goods.Rahimi also called Australians a bunch of cattlemen. Australia joined the 27-member European Union in imposing additional sanctions against Iran. While Iranian economists acknowledge that sanctions are biting and have harmed Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted this week that sanctions will instead serve to eradicate the domination of the dollar in global markets.

Abbas sets terms for resuming direct talks with Israel
Mon Aug 9, 5:34 pm ET

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said Monday he is ready to resume direct talks with Israel but only based on a freeze of Jewish settlement activity as called for by the Middle East peace Quartet. We are ready to begin direct negotiations with Israel if the Quartet asks for them on the basis of its decisions of March 19, he told journalists in the West Bank town of Ramallah on the eve of a visit by US envoy George Mitchell. The Quartet of the United States, the United Nations, European Union and Russia called in March for Israel to freeze all Jewish settlement activity on occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem.East Jerusalem is the mainly Arab half of the Holy City that Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day War and then annexed.Israel swiftly rejected the Quartet's call, saying it harmed the chances of a peace accord. The Quartet also urged Israel and the Palestinians to resume talks on final-status issues with the aim of reaching a peace settlement within 24 months.Mitchell is to hold talks on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas, before returning to Washington the next day.The Palestinians and Israelis have since May held indirect proximity talks with Mitchell as mediator but they have not held direct negotiations since Israel's war on Hamas-ruled Gaza in December 2008-January 2009.US officials say they are encouraged that Arab foreign ministers agreed to green light direct talks when they met in Cairo in late July.

LONDON (AFP) – Mankind's only chance of long-term survival lies in colonising space, as humans drain Earth of resources and face a terrifying array of new threats, warned British scientist Stephen Hawking on Monday. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet, the renowned astrophysicist told the website Big Think, a forum which airs ideas on many subjects from experts. Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space, he added. He warned that the human race was likely to face an increased number of events that threaten its very existence, as the Cuban missile crisis did in 1962.The Cold War showdown saw the United States and Soviet Union in a confrontation over Soviet missiles deployed in Cuba, near US shores, and brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.We are entering an increasingly dangerous period of our history, said Hawking. Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical ability to change the environment for good or ill.If we want to survive beyond the next century, our future is in space, added the scientist. That is why I'm in favour of manned, or should I say personed, space flight. His comments came after he warned in a recent television series that mankind should avoid contact with aliens at all costs, as the consequences could be devastating.
