HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye chil dren of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24
22  The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.

24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Israel to remain closed to foreign visitors until at least September-The Times of Israel-Airports Authority says current restrictions, under which entry granted only to nationals or those obtaining special permit from Immigration Authority, to stay in force-By TOI staff-july 20,20-Today, 4:59 pm

Restrictions preventing foreign visitors from entering the country due to the coronavirus pandemic will be extended until the the beginning of September, the Israel Airports Authority announced Monday. The ban will continue until September 1 due to the recent surge in virus infections in Israel, the IAA said.Recent weeks have seen daily infections climb consistently to nearly 2,000, although on Monday the Health Ministry reported a drop to 1,139 cases in the previous 24 hours. The death toll increased by six overnight Sunday and Monday morning, to 415.The ongoing ban allows only returning Israeli citizens or those who obtain special permission from the Population Immigration and Border Authority to enter the country. All those who do arrive are required to self-quarantine for two weeks.Last week Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz told Radio 103FM that one of the biggest impacts on the economy by the virus was the limitation of international air travel, and that reopening Israel’s skies was a priority. Many carriers have canceled their routes to and from Israel, and with the infection rate climbing are not likely to change that policy anytime soon.Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz speaks at a conference in Tel Aviv on February 27, 2019. (Flash90)-Israel, he continued, has an “export-orientated high-tech economy. The interaction between Israel and the world has been seriously damaged because of the aerial lockdown.”Israel closed its borders to foreign travelers in mid-March and has periodically extended the restrictions since then.Almost all air travel to Israel was shut down due to the coronavirus restrictions, with only a handful of flights weekly, including a daily route to Newark, New Jersey, flown by United Airlines.Several airlines have since resumed flights. Air Canada, Delta and German carrier Lufthansa all began flying to Israel in June. Budget airlines Wizz and Ryanair have also resumed flights.Israel’s tourism industry, which employs some 80,000 people and contributes some 3 percent to the gross national product, has been gutted by the virus and its impact on air travel.Earlier this month Israel’s struggling national carrier El Al accepted a government bailout that would likely give the state some 61% of the firm. Under the deal, the airline will get a $250 million government-backed loan, with guarantees for 75% of the loan, in case the firm defaults. The company has entered deep financial trouble due to the pandemic, and last month shut down all air operations amid an ongoing labor dispute. After initially bringing daily infection rates down to low double digits Israel has seen the numbers climb again after it rolled by lockdown measures that impacted all areas of the economy. There has been renewed talk of a looming second lockdown if the new wave doesn’t fade.

New AJC anti-Semitism director: Look at my track record, not my skin or religion-The Times of Israel-Interview'Anti-Semitism is more complex now than ever before'-Incoming American Jewish Committee anti-bigotry head Holly Huffnagle is white and Christian; she’s also worked as a Holocaust researcher and for the US anti-Semitism czar-By Cathryn J. Prince-july 20,20-Today, 3:51 am

NEW YORK — At a time when Jews in the United States are being blamed for COVID-19 or for paying asylum seekers to seek refuge there, fighting anti-Semitism can sometimes feel like standing in the middle of a downpour with no umbrella.“I would argue that today anti-Semitism is more complex than at any other point in history because all of these factors don’t just exist separately, they also exist simultaneously online,” Holly Huffnagle, the newly appointed American Jewish Committee’s US Director for Combating Antisemitism, told The Times of Israel in a recent interview. In her new role, Huffnagle will direct the agency’s response to anti-Semitism in the US and its efforts to better protect the Jewish community.Huffnagle, who previously served as a policy advisor to the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism at the US State Department, has fought against anti-Semitism since her graduate school days at Georgetown University. Yet, in spite of her resume, Huffnagle’s promotion has been met with consternation in some quarters. That’s because Huffnagle, 33, is an observant Baptist who goes to church every Sunday.Still, she’s determined to forge ahead.“As someone who is not Jewish, it’s hard to personally figure out my own voice in this space because I’m not the direct recipient of anti-Semitism or bigotry. However, I want to help American Jewish communities be freer. We can’t necessarily solve the problem, but we can work to make people freer from prejudice,” she said in a Zoom call from her home in Los Angeles.Newly appointed American Jewish Committee’s US Director for Combating Antisemitism, Holly Huffnagle. (Courtesy)-Prior to her promotion Huffnagle was assistant director of AJC Los Angeles and worked as a researcher in the Mandel Center of Advanced Holocaust Studies at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.Additionally, Huffnagle lived and worked in Poland on and off between 2011 and 2017. While there, she conducted research on Muslim-Jewish relations before World War II, volunteered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and served as a liaison for the Jan Karski Educational Foundation. The following conversation was edited for brevity and clarity.Tell us a little about the home you grew up in, was it particularly religious? The religious community I grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, was actually a Baptist community, a Protestant denomination which probably would be identified as Evangelical. My family background is Baptist. My father was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and his father was a southern Baptist minister from Mississippi who got his license to preach in the South and moved his family of six children to California to start a Baptist church. My father grew up in this very religious environment. On my mother’s side, my grandparents co-founded the Bethany Baptist Church in Thousand Oaks in the 1960s. I was raised in that church.Holly Huffnagle speaks at European Parliament on Jewish community security in 2017. (Courtesy)-What does your family think about the path you’ve taken? My parents are very supportive. They are now on the Chabad of Conejo Listserv. They donate to the Holocaust museum and my dad goes to a few of the Chabad programs. They are very supportive and get the “why” of what I do — although my father will sometimes tease that I’m going to come home one Christmas and say I’m Jewish now.Regarding my broader extended family, I don’t think they know exactly what it is I’m doing. They know it has something to do with “Jews” or “Jewish issues,” or “Holocaust.” I take that as a measure of me having to share more and be more in conversation with them about what I’m doing.I also have a lot of members of my extended family who are very pro-Israel from an Evangelical standpoint.Holly Huffnagle stands in front of a Tatar mosque in Kruszyniany while researching Jewish-Muslim relations in interwar Poland, 2013. (Courtesy)-What influenced you to study history? I loved history as a kid. I was especially fascinated with the Civil War growing up. Then I had a teacher in high school, Mrs. Jackson, who taught AP European history. She made me realize how little I actually knew about the world around me.Something that was drilled into us in school was that we are supposed to be lifelong learners. However, it wasn’t until college that I explored this further. I was much better in chemistry and math. I actually got a scholarship to the University of California Davis to study chemistry, which I declined.Do your math skills inform what you’re doing now? The math part of me really likes facts. I want to make sure that 2 +2 = 4. When I worked in the State Department it was much easier to take the time to get things right before putting out a policy. When you’re in the advocacy space, or in the constant news cycle space, you have to be ready to go all the time. We’re operating in a world with a lot of false information and so you can’t always wait to have exact answers before having to answer. That’s been a huge learning curve for me.Can you speak to the current climate where we see an assault on truth, the disparaging of evidence-based research and an increasing embrace of conspiracy theories? That is the biggest challenge. Giving people rational facts is not going to work anymore. Many of them don’t need any proof for what they believe. They just believe the conspiracies. They’re not going to necessarily believe it when a Jewish advocacy organization says, “This is anti-Semitism, and this is why it’s anti-Semitism.”We know now lies spread six times faster than truth, and online, where there are no gatekeepers or fact checkers, the lies have a life of their own. So that is one of the biggest challenges we face against all this misinformation and disinformation swirling around — having a loud enough voice.Holly Huffnagle, left, cleans shoes of Holocaust victims at Auschwitz in 2011. (Courtesy)-What’s one experience you had working in Poland that still sticks out? In 2011 I lived in the town of Oswiecim, where Auschwitz is located. I volunteered at the state museum there. We learned how to do several things around the site, but the most powerful thing was being trained how to clean shoes. The shoes get rotated in the display cases because of conservation issues.I remember there was this one red sandal. I remember it because it had a distinct design on the side.In 2017 I was teaching two courses in Europe for my undergraduate school, Westmont College. I took my students to Auschwitz and when we walked down that hall where the shoes are displayed, I saw the shoe that I cleaned years before. I have been to Auschwitz-Birkenau nine times now. Every time it hits you differently, but this time I lost it. It was so powerful to see that shoe again after all those years.Holly Huffnagle with her undergraduate students from Westmont College’s Europe semester in front of the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Oswiecim, Poland, 2017. (Courtesy)-Talk about overt versus coded anti-Semitism on social media.Yes, we’ve seen a lot of that online, especially around the pandemic. We’ve also seen some weird conspiracy theories around the [Black Lives Matter] protests where Jews have been blamed for wanting these protests or causing riots. We’re at a point where the radical left and far right are recycling each other’s material.Anti-Semitism was rising before 2016, but since 2016, white supremacist accounts across social media platforms have grown 600 percent in the United States.Researchers will point to several factors: global economic uncertainty, issues of immigration, fading memories of the Holocaust and Israel-related anti-Semitism.Regarding coded language, there are certain words like globalist or New York bankers. Some people use these terms and don’t realize they are both using an anti-Semitic trope and bolstering real anti-Semites.All this presents a real challenge right now for anyone combating anti-Semitism to call out and condemn anti-Semitism. You don’t want to call everyone an anti-Semite, because you don’t want to use the word as a bludgeon. The term loses value when you overuse it.What do you say to those, like former governor of Vermont Howard Dean, IfNotNow and others on Twitter, who either oppose or are mistrustful of your role with AJC because of your faith? The first thing I’ll say is that the outpouring of support, which I don’t think I deserve because this is part of my job, was overwhelming. I had so many people, Jewish and non-Jewish colleagues and former colleagues, asking how I’m doing, telling me they’re glad to have me in this fight.Unfortunately Christians don’t have much a reputation for anything but hate these days thanks to Franklin Graham and Jerry Falwell and other trump friends. AJC gets no points for this. https://t.co/Jwge4z6Spf— Howard Dean (@GovHowardDean) July 11, 2020-What was sad about the Howard Dean tweet was the broad brushstroke it painted about Christianity. We try so hard in our work not to paint any group as a monolith. The IfNotNow tweet was interesting because, yes, I’m white, and yes, I’m Christian. Those two identifiers are accurate, but I would hope that I would be seen for my commitment and my experience in this fight [against anti-Semitism].We welcome allies in the fight for Jewish safety — but it should be obvious that white Christians should not be leading Jewish organization’s advocacy against antisemitism. The AJC continues to show how out of touch it is with American Jews. https://t.co/tsZY4pLGIz— IfNotNow???? (@IfNotNowOrg) July 12, 2020-What should President Donald Trump do in this moment regarding anti-Semitism?I would hope the president would call out anti-Semitism from his own political party and political supporters in addition to calling out anti-Semitism on the left, which he should do absolutely. Also, he should address the growth of white supremacists. We know Richard Spencer and David Duke have said that President Trump is the best thing that’s happened for them. I’m not putting any blame on President Trump for this, but my request, as someone who is in this fight, would be the disavowing of white supremacists. What should presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden do? Continue pushing hard against white supremacy. He also needs to call out anti-Semitism when it comes from his own party. He needs to listen to the majority of the Jewish community.Last year the AJC did a landmark study about Jewish attitudes toward anti-Semitism. One of the questions we asked was along the lines of “Do you think it’s anti-Semitic when someone says Israel doesn’t have a right to exist?” About 80% of American Jews respondents said yes. I think that’s especially important for Joe Biden to listen to that because he represents the left.Lastly, what’s slipping through the cracks? In this hyperattentive go-go-go world I don’t think we’re taking enough time to figure out how we are going to combat anti-Semitism of the future. The fight against anti-Semitism is often reactive and I think what is slipping through the cracks is long-term planning.

Putin attends keel-laying of new warships in annexed Crimea-[The Canadian Press]-The Canadian Press-July 20, 2020

MOSCOW — Russia's President Vladimir Putin pledged Monday to continue an ambitious program of building new warships on a trip to Crimea, which Russia has annexed from Ukraine.Speaking during the keel-laying of two landing vessels at a shipyard in Kerch, Putin said that Russia needs a strong navy to defend its interests and "help maintain a strategic balance and global stability.”The Kremlin has made military modernization its top priority amid tensions with the West that followed Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea. The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine denounced the move, saying on Twitter that “Russia's unauthorized construction of warships on sovereign Ukrainian territory, which it seized by force, violates international norms once again.”In sync with the keel-laying ceremony in Crimea, Russia also launched the construction of two frigates in St. Petersburg and of two nuclear-powered submarines at the giant Sevmash shipyard in the northern city of Severodvinsk.Putin said that the navy has commissioned 200 new ships over the past eight years, adding that the modernization will continue.Seeking to demonstrate its global reach, the Russian navy has increasingly often sent its ships to various parts of the world.Putin said that the navy currently has 60 vessels on patrol missions.“We will maintain efforts to develop a modern navy and will build ships armed with new weapons,” he said.Russian officials noted that the new frigates and nuclear submarines that were laid Monday will be armed with hypersonic weapons. The military has said that the new Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles capable of striking targets 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) away, travelling at 9 times the speed of sound, have undergone successful tests and will equip future navy ships. The Associated Press

‘Islamic State bride’ allowed to return to Britain to fight for citizenship-The Times of Israel-Boris Johnson says government will seek appeal of ruling allowing Shamima Begum to come back to UK, after she was stripped of her citizenship for going to Syria to join jihadists
By AFP-july 17,20-Today, 2:07 pm

LONDON — A woman who had her UK citizenship revoked after traveling to Syria to join the Islamic State jihadist group should be allowed to return home to challenge the decision, a court ruled Thursday.Shamima Begum, 20, lost the first stage of her case about the legality of the government’s decision at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) in February. But the tribunal also ruled she could not have a “fair and effective appeal” or play “any meaningful part” in the process, as she was living in a Syrian refugee camp.Three senior judges at the Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld that SIAC ruling.“Ms. Begum should be allowed to come to the United Kingdom to pursue her appeal albeit subject to such controls as the (home secretary) deems appropriate,” they said.Begum was 15 when she and two other schoolgirls from Bethnal Green in east London left home to join the jihadist group on February 17, 2015.She claims she married a Dutch convert soon after arriving in IS-held territory. She was discovered, nine months pregnant, in a Syrian refugee camp in February last year. Her newborn baby died soon after she gave birth. Two of her other children also died under IS rule.Screen capture from video of an interview with Shamima Begum, right, a British teen who joined the Islamic State. Her newborn baby is held by a woman, left, during the interview from Syria, February 2019. But Bangladesh’s foreign minister has said he would not consider granting her citizenship. Her lawyer, Daniel Furner, said his client had “never had a fair opportunity to give her side of the story,” which made the government’s decision unjust.Human rights group Liberty also welcomed the decision, saying: “The right to a fair trial is not something the government can take away on a whim.“It is a fundamental part of our justice system and equal access to justice must apply to everyone.”‘Bitterly disappointed’Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesman said the government was “bitterly disappointed” and would seek permission to appeal — and to ensure Begum could not return before it was heard.“The government’s priority is maintaining our national security, and decisions to deprive individuals of their citizenship are not taken lightly,” he told reporters.

Gantz further delays sanctions on West Bank banks for PA terror stipends-The Times of Israel-Families of Israelis killed in terror attacks pan decision, which defense minister’s office says was made at recommendation of security officials-By TOI staff-july 20,20-Today, 7:10 pm

Defense Minister Benny Gantz has further delayed implementation of a military decree that would sanction banks in the West Bank for dispensing stipends from the Palestinian Liberation Organization to convicted terrorists and families of terrorists.Gantz signed off on freezing implementation of the edict over the weekend for an additional 45 days.“It’s illogical and immoral that Israel is helping the Palestinian Authority pay blood money as salaries to terrorists,” Bohrim B’Haim, an organization of families who lost relatives in terror attacks, told the Ynet news site. The father of Shir Hajaj, an IDF soldier killed in a January 2017 car-ramming attack in Jerusalem, slammed Gantz over the decision.“The money is the main factor that motivates terror and it’s clear to everyone that if [you] stop the money you prevent terror,” Herzl Hajaj said. “Unfortunately, Benny Gantz has again decided to freeze the decree against the banks, so terrorists and their families will continue to receive salaries for the murder of our children with the approval of the defense minister of the State of Israel.”Defense Minister Benny Gantz at the weekly cabinet meeting, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem on June 28, 2020 (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)-Gantz’s office pushed back on the criticism, saying the decision was made in accordance with the recommendations of security officials. In early June, Gantz had delayed implementing the order until mid-July.The Israeli government has long decried the tens of millions of dollars the PLO pays every year to Palestinians convicted of terrorism and to families of dead assailants, which Israel says encourages terror attacks by offering a direct incentive to carry them out. After an Israeli military edict in early May criminalized PA government funding for convicted terrorists, several banks closed or froze prisoners’ accounts in the West Bank and Jordan. Qadri Abu Bakr, director of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Commission, later announced that salaries had been dispensed.Earlier this month, four banks refused to transfer PLO stipends, ostensibly for fear of Israeli sanctions that had been set to go into effect this month. The refusal to dispense the money came after two months in which the Palestinian Authority has been unable to pay any of its employees due to a massive fiscal crisis.Despite the looming Israeli sanctions, Ramallah has vowed to continue the payments, describing them as a form of social welfare and compensation for what it claims is an unfair military justice system. The military order applies substantial parts of Israel’s anti-terror law to the West Bank. The law states that any person or body handing financial aid to anyone, with the purpose being to facilitate, advance, fund or reward terror-related offenses, is committing a crime that carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison and a fine.

Separatists protest Spanish royals' visit to rural Catalonia-[The Canadian Press]-July 20, 2020

L’ESPLUGA DE FRANCOLI, Spain — Hundreds of Catalan independence supporters protested the visit of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia on Monday to the northeastern region as part of a royal tour across Spain that is meant to bolster spirits amid the coronavirus pandemic. The visit came as a barrage of media leaks accuse the king’s father, former monarch Juan Carlos I, of allegedly hiding millions of untaxed euros in offshore funds.Prosecutors in the country’s Supreme Court are determining whether the king emeritus can be investigated for receiving the funds from Saudi Arabia, possibly as kickbacks for a high-speed railway project. Juan Carlos hasn't publicly addressed the allegations against him.The scandal is the latest to rock the Spanish royal family. In mid-March, it prompted Felipe to renounce any inheritance he could receive from his father and stripped him of the annual stipend as king emeritus. Juan Carlos abdicated on behalf of his son in 2014.With that backdrop, the royal couple launched a visit to all of Spain’s 17 regions that was designed as a show of support for the citizens and the economy as it recovers from the first wave of the pandemic. The Catalan leg of the tour was initially planned for last week covering several towns and Barcelona, but the monarchy said it had postponed it and scaled it back to a short visit to a monastery because of the spike in virus cases in and around the regional capital.Protesters on Monday carried photos of Felipe upside down and letters completing the sentence “Catalonia doesn't have a king" during a march organized by ANC, the region's largest pro-independence civil society group. The march was headed to the Royal Monastery of Poblet, where the king and the queen were visiting, but police blocked access at the main road. Some of the activists tried to reach the monastery by venturing into nearby vineyards.High-speed and regular trains in and out of the northern Catalan city of Girona were also delayed or cancelled due to “acts of vandalism,” according to a tweet by Spain’s railway infrastructure operator, ADIF. A photo circulated on messaging apps showed tires burning on railways next to a sign showing a crossed out upside down image of a crown.Tensions between separatists in Catalonia, which has a population of 7.5 million, and those in support of Spanish unity came to a head in late 2017 following a banned referendum met with police violence that led to the prosecution of top elected officials and activists. The Associated Press.

Egypt’s lawmakers to vote on deploying troops to Libya-The Times of Israel-Cairo could intervene in neighboring country’s civil war in response to territorial gains by forces backed by rival Turkey-By Samy Magdy-JULY 20,20-Today, 2:52 pm

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s parliament is to vote Monday to authorize the president to deploy troops to neighboring Libya, if Turkey-backed forces there, allied with the UN-supported government in Tripoli, move to retake the strategic coastal city of Sirte. An Egyptian intervention would further destabilize oil-rich Libya, and put two US allies — Turkey and Egypt — in possible direct confrontation. The vote was initially scheduled for Sunday, but was moved to Monday in a closed session, according to lawmaker Mustafa Bakry. The House of Representatives, packed with supporters of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, is highly likely to vote in favor of sending troops to Libya.Libya was plunged into chaos when a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, who was later killed. The country is now split between a government in the east, allied with military commander Khalifa Hifter, and one in Tripoli, in the west, supported by the United Nations.Fighters of the ‘Shelba’ unit, a militia allied with the UN-supported Libyan government, aim at enemy positions at the Salah-addin neighborhood front line in Tripoli, Libya, on August 31, 2019. (AP Photo/Ricard Garcia Vilanova, File)-The conflict has escalated into a regional proxy war fueled by foreign powers pouring weapons and mercenaries into the country.Egypt has been backing the east-based Libyan forces in the conflict while Turkey backs the forces in the capital, Tripoli, in the west. Egypt’s president warned in June that any attack on Sirte or the inland Jufra air would prompt Cairo to intervene militarily, allegedly to protect its western border with Libya.Along with Egypt, Hifter is also backed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia, while the in addition to Turkey, the Tripoli forces are aided by Qatar and Italy. The US has grown increasingly concerned about Moscow’s growing influence in Libya, where hundreds of Russian mercenaries have backed an attempt by Hifter’s forces to capture Tripoli.Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi speaks during a press conference in Bucharest, Romania, on June 19, 2019. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda, File)-Egypt’s state-run al-Ahram daily reported on Sunday that the vote in Parliament was intended to mandate el-Sissi to “intervene militarily in Libya to help defend the western neighbor against Turkish aggression.”Last week, el-Sissi hosted dozens of tribal leaders loyal to Hifter in Cairo, where he repeated that Egypt will “not stand idly by in the face of moves that pose a direct threat to security.”Libya’s east-based parliament also urged el-Sissi to send troops.Hifter’s forces launched an offensive to take Tripoli from the UN-supported government in April last year but their campaign — which had stalemated after reaching the outskirts of the Libyan capital — suffered a blow last month when the Tripoli-allied forces, with Turkish support, pushed them back and gained the upper hand in the fighting. The Tripoli forces retook the capital’s airport, all main entrance and exit points to the city and a string of key towns in the region. They pushed on eastward, vowing to also retake Sirte, which Hifter took earlier this year.Capturing the city, Gaddafi’s birthplace, would open the door for the Turkish-backed forces to advance even farther eastward and potentially take vital oil installations, terminals and fields now under Hifter’s control.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman admitted to hospital for tests-The Times of Israel-State media says 84-year-old monarch hospitalized in Riyadh after inflammation of the gallbladder-By Aya Batrawy-july 20,20-Today, 8:29 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has been admitted to a hospital in the capital, Riyadh, for medical tests due to inflammation of the gallbladder, the kingdom’s Royal Court said Monday in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency. The statement said the 84-year-old monarch is being tested at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital. The brief statement did not provide further details.King Salman has been in power since January 2015. He is considered the last Saudi monarch of his generation of brothers who have held power since the death of their father and founder of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz.King Salman has empowered his 34-year-old son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as his successor. The crown prince’s assertive and bold style of leadership, as well as his consolidation of power and sidelining of potential rivals, has been controversial.Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammad bin Salman speaks at the G20 Osaka Summit, June 29, 2019. (Mikhail Svetlov/Getty Images via JTA)-With the support of his father, Prince Mohammed has transformed the kingdom in recent years, opening it up to tourists and eroding decades of ultraconservative restrictions on entertainment and women’s rights as he tries to diversify the Saudi economy away from reliance on oil exports. The prince has also detained dozens of activists and critics, overseen a devastating war in Yemen and rounded up top members of the royal family in his quest for power. The Saudi king has not been seen in public in recent months due to social distancing guidelines and concerns over the spread of the coronavirus inside the kingdom, which has one of the largest outbreaks in the Middle East. He has been shown, however, in state-run media images attending virtual meetings with his Cabinet and held calls with world leaders.King Salman, who oversees Islam’s holiest sites in Mecca and Medina, was crown prince under King Abdullah and served as defense minister. For more than 50 years prior to that, he was governor of Riyadh, overseeing its evolution from a barren city to a teeming capital.

FM Ashkenazi to Hungarian counterpart: US peace plan a ‘significant opportunity’-The Times of Israel-Gabi Ashkenazi meets with visiting Peter Szijjártó, urges Budapest to use its position on UN atomic watchdog’s board to hold Iran accountable for its ‘malign activities’By Raphael Ahren and TOI staff-july 20,20-Today, 8:27 pm

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó arrived at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem Monday to kick off a half-day visit to Israel. After meeting with his Hungarian counterpart in Jerusalem, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said talks focused on cooperation between the two countries, as well as the Iranian nuclear threat and the US Middle East peace plan.“Hungary understands Israel’s positions and that there are currently significant regional opportunities, most notably [US] President Trump’s peace initiative. It is an important milestone for the region, and it represents a significant opportunity,” Ashkenazi said at a press conference with Szijjártó.Ashkenazi noted that Hungary is a board member of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency, which has reported that Iran is in breach of commitments it made under a 2015 pact with world powers and that has steadily unraveled since the US pulled out in 2018.“The international community must hold Iran accountable, and act strongly against Iran’s malign activities,” Ashkenazi said.Talks with Szijjártó were also attended by Science and Technology Minister Izhar Shay. Ashkenazi said the countries signed two agreements, one awarding scholarships to Israeli students studying in Hungary, and the other to increase cooperation in space research. The meeting also focused on expanding economic cooperation and the joint production in Hungary of ventilators used to treat coronavirus patients with serious symptoms, he said.Ashkenazi said Israel and Hungary will work towards renewing travel and tourism between their countries. International travel has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. Israel’s Airports Authority on Monday announced that it was extending until September a ban on arrivals of non-citizens which has already been in place for four months. The Hungarian top diplomat was to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day.Hungary is one of Israel’s staunchest supporters in the international community, and one of the few countries that did not openly speak out against Jerusalem’s recent intention to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank. Szijjártó has reiterated on several occasions that the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban will continue to stand up against one-sided condemnations of the Jewish state.Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto in his office in Budapest, Hungary, June 14, 2019. (Attila Kovacs/MTI via AP)-Szijjártó has also expressed rare praise for Trump’s proposal, saying in the past that the administration’s Mideast peace plan “is suitable for creating peace and stability in the region in the long term.”However, officials in Jerusalem said Sunday that Netanyahu’s planned annexation, which has recently disappeared from the headlines amid a resurgent coronavirus and a hesitant White House, is not expected to feature prominently in Szijjártó’s discussions with his Israeli counterparts. In February, Szijjártó, who has been foreign minister since 2014, signed an official document supporting Israel’s position that the International Criminal Court does not have jurisdiction to investigate possible war crimes committed in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.Budapest “has doubts that Palestine fulfills all the constitutive elements of statehood, and hence the territorial jurisdiction of the Court does not necessarily extend to ‘occupied Palestinian territories,’” the document stated. One of the three judges of an ICC pre-trial chamber currently weighing the question of jurisdiction, Péter Kovács, is a Hungarian national. But Israel does not intend to ask Szijjártó to get involved in the matter, officials in Jerusalem said.Hungarian FM Péter Szijjártó and PM Benjamin Netanyahu open Hungary’s trade mission in central Jerusalem, March 19, 2019. (Amos Ben Gershom/GPO)-In March 2019, Szijjártó ceremoniously opened a trade mission in Jerusalem, making Hungary the first and so far only EU member state to operate an office with diplomatic status in the capital.Szijjártó is the fifth senior foreign dignitary to visit Israel since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. He is not scheduled to visit the Palestinian territories.

'Frankfurt is the most Jewish city in Germany'-All but eradicated in Holocaust, Frankfurt’s Jews today have a potent voice-Reduced from 30,000 to a mere 100 after WWII, the German community thrives today after an influx of outsiders have shaped the postwar city into a progressive haven
By Joe Baur-july 20,20-Today, 5:50 am

BERLIN (JTA) — There were approximately 30,000 Jews in the city of Frankfurt before World War II, making it the largest community in Germany.By the time the US military occupied the city in 1945, there were only about 100 left.“Jewish life was destroyed,” said Tobias Freimuller, author of the recently published “Frankfurt and the Jews,” a history of the community from 1945-1990.Flash forward to 2020 and the Jewish community of Frankfurt is once again a powerful force in the city, one of Germany’s largest and a major business hub. There are only about 6,600 Jews in the city of 753,000, but they have a political influence that other minority populations don’t. Fighting anti-Semitism is a city priority. Jewish leaders are in regular contact with city leaders. When there is a tragic or otherwise newsworthy event, a representative of the Jewish community is always involved in the city’s response.“If we open our mouth, everybody listens,” said Leo Latasch, a professor of medicine who oversees social affairs and security, among other things, for the Frankfurt Jewish Community organization. “We have an excellent relationship with the democratic parties.”Illustrative: June 10, 2014, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a man wears a kippa with the flags of Germany and Israel. (Frank Rumpenhorst / dpa / AFP)Freimuller, deputy director of the Fritz Bauer Institute — a Holocaust research center affiliated with the city’s Goethe University — chronicles the Jewish resurgence in his book, which was published on April 15.It’s a complex narrative, say members of the Jewish community and those close to it, because the Nazis’ destruction was so complete; a Jewish presence had to be rebuilt with help from the outside.“Rebirth sounds like a revival of the community,” said Esther Schapira, a journalist and filmmaker who grew up in Frankfurt. “That is not the case.”The originals and the DPs-After the war, the Jews remaining in Frankfurt were of two types. There were the few survivors who founded today’s Frankfurt Jewish Community organization in 1947 and envisioned returning to the roots of the community that existed before the war. That group consisted mainly of assimilated Jews who saw themselves as German and were often married to non-Jews.Laura Cazes works for Frankfurt’s Zentralwohlfahrtsstelleder Juden in Deutschland (ZWST), an organization committed to social welfare work in the spirit of tzedakah. (ZWST/Kfir Harbi/ via JTA)-Those Jews were called the Alteingesessene, or the long-established ones, said 30-year-old Laura Cazes, an employee of Frankfurt’s Zentralwohlfahrtsstelleder Juden in Deutschland, or ZWST, a Jewish social welfare organization.“They were essential but there were very few,” Cazes said. Then there were the displaced persons, or DPs, who came from across Eastern Europe. Many ended up in Frankfurt as a pit stop en route to the United States or then-Palestine, but immigration wasn’t initially possible. Instead, tens of thousands of Jewish DPs spent years in DP camps, such as Frankfurt-Zeilsheim.The situation changed in 1948, when the British Mandate in Palestine gave way to the founding of the State of Israel and the United States adopted the Displaced Persons Act, opening its borders. Most DPs left Germany, but not everyone was able to make the journey.“Some stayed for a variety of reasons,” Freimuller explained. “Because they were too old, too sick, because they couldn’t speak English or Hebrew, or maybe because they ended up starting a small business or found another way to start making money.”In 1949, the community organization combined with the Committee of Displaced Persons. There were about 2,000 Jews in total between the two groups. On April 13, 1946, 1,000 Jewish orphans whose parents were killed in the Holocaust left Frankfurt for then-Palestine. (Keystone-France/Gamma-Keystone via Getty Images/ via JTA)-A new start-“What’s interesting is that hardly anyone in the Jewish community at the time came from the city,” said Freimuller. “The number of alt-Frankfurter [or “original Frankfurters”] was quite low. That means that few in the postwar Jewish community saw Frankfurt during Nazi rule. It was a completely new start and something the founders couldn’t have imagined.”After the founding of the Bundesrepublik in 1949, West Germany passed legislation to start the process of compensating Holocaust survivors. Freimuller called it “a signal in front of the German elite, the press, and the people that Jewish life would be protected.”With that help, the Frankfurt community began to build and expand.“Most of them were survivors, or children of survivors from Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania,” Cazes said. “The Jewish community that was built in Frankfurt after the war has a very different identity.”Artist Gunter Demnig lays four ‘Stolpersteine,’ or stumbling stones, a Holocaust commemoration, for Karolina Cohn and her family in Frankfurt, Germany, November 13, 2017. (Arne Dedert/dpa via AP)-By most accounts, Jews in Frankfurt avoided the spotlight for the first several decades following the war. Freimuller said that Jewish institutions carefully toed the line and were withdrawn in public life. They didn’t discuss what happened to their families. But that changed in 1985, during what Freimuller refers to as a key turning point in the history of Jews in postwar Germany. The ‘coming out’ moment-In the 1960s, city planners redesigned the formerly bourgeois Westend neighborhood, which was heavily Jewish until the 1930s. The neighborhood was only slightly damaged during the war and many of its 19th-century upper-class homes were still standing. But in the ’60s, the city wanted to build commercial high-rise buildings along the central corridors of Westend because the neighboring city center was overcrowded. The city started by ripping out old homes and putting in office buildings, but this led to protests — squatters stayed in the homes scheduled for demolition, and other protestors clashed with police in the streets.Women introduce themselves at the first-ever Jewish Women’s Empowerment Summit in Frankfurt, Germany, February 21-24, 2019. (Courtesy)-Many of the realtors involved in the new developments were Jewish, and that led to what Freimuller calls “anti-Semitic undertones” in public life.In the 1970s, prominent playwright Rainer Werner Fassbinder wrote a play inspired by the neighborhood conflict. The play, “Garbage, the City and Death,” was protested for its perceived anti-Semitic main character — a real estate speculator named Der reiche Jude (“The rich Jew”).Though the play was published, its premiere in 1975 was canceled after protests. The play wasn’t performed until 1985, but Jewish objections over the content remained and some took action during the first performance. They forged tickets to get into the premiere, and when the play began, they stormed the stage and prevented it from being performed.Suddenly, Jews in Frankfurt had found their public voice.“Many considered this spectacular action as a turning point for the representation of the postwar Jewish community,” Freimuller said.Illustrative: Demonstrators hold a poster criticizing a far-right party, reading ‘AfD is not kosher’ as they take part in a rally organized by Germany’s JSUD Jewish students’ union on October 7, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany. (AFP PHOTO / dpa / Frank Rumpenhorst)-Unpacking the suitcases-Over the past 25 years, Jewish communities across Germany have benefited from an influx of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Those families who came have left their mark in Frankfurt, though — for example, there’s an annual festival that celebrates the Russian role in ending WWII.Schapira, 59, whose work typically focuses on international perceptions of Israel, suggests that Frankfurt’s liberal ethos has allowed the new Jewish community to flourish, noting that it has welcomed Turkish immigrants as well. Millions of people with Turkish ancestry live in Germany, and more than half of Frankfurt’s citizens have immigrant roots.“Frankfurt has got a very liberal spirit,” Schapira said, adding that tensions with Muslim communities are not a big issue. “You have quite an open atmosphere that makes it possible for Jews to blossom again.”The city is home to one large synagogue, three smaller ones and a prayer room at the airport. Latasch describes these as mostly Conservative — as opposed to Orthodox or Liberal, other common denominational terms used in Europe — but adds that there are “possibilities for people who are Orthodox or Liberal.”The Westend Synagogue in Frankfurt, Germany. (Wikimedia Commons)-Schapira’s father was a survivor from Romania who ended up in Frankfurt as a displaced person.“They never intended to stay here or to live here,” Schapira said of her father and his peers. “It was just the waiting time until they were able to go where they wanted to go, which was mainly either America, Argentina, or Israel.”But Schapira’s father was tired. He didn’t have the financial means or physical strength to make the journey overseas. So he established roots in Frankfurt and married a non-Jewish German woman.Despite having been born and raised in Germany, Schapira says “the idea to leave the country” has always been in the back of her head.“Don’t mix too much. Don’t get too familiar. Don’t feel too rooted. Be on alert. Be always ready not to miss the right moment to leave again,” were just some of the messages she says she learned from her father and others in the community.Although moving had been a possibility for Schapira and her family, they ended up staying because, as her father put it, “Right now, this is the safest place for Jews to be, because the whole world is watching Germany.” However, in her next breath, she admits that this could always change.Illustrative: Volunteers with a program now called Meet a Jew talk with non-Jewish students at a school in Frankfurt, November 5, 2019. It’s very, very present.”As much as the community has made its impact in contemporary Frankfurt, and as safe as it may feel, Schapira says that leaving is still something all Jews think about — no matter what generation they’re in.“I think even for the third generation, this is true,” she said. “As much as they’ve unpacked the suitcase, they never threw it away, so it’s not such a big deal to pack again.”

Fatah and Hamas to hold ‘historic’ joint rally in Gaza against annexation-Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas terror group chief Ismail Haniyeh to speak at the event, according to senior officials in the two rival Palestinian factions-By Aaron Boxerman-july 20,20-Today, 4:24 pm

Fatah Secretary-General Jibril Rajoub announced on Monday that rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas will hold a joint rally in the Gaza Strip against Israeli annexation “in the coming days,” according to a statement published by the Palestinian Authority’s official WAFA news agency.“The rally will be a historic point in consolidating the united Palestinian position in the face of the annexation project,” Rajoub said, referring to Israel’s declared plan to annex parts of the West Bank in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s controversial peace plan — a plan that in recent weeks appear to have been put on the back burner amid a resurgent coronavirus and a hesitant White House.According to Rajoub, both Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and other “national leaders” will speak at the event. It was unclear from the statement whether Abbas would participate by video, though that was highly likely. The head of the Hamas terror organization, Ismail Haniyeh, will also speak at the event, Hamas political bureau member Khalil al-Hayya said in a statement.“This is a message to all sides. We are stressing the unified position of our people in all its factions and forces, wherever they are located, against the annexation plan,'” al-Hayya said.Fatah and Gaza-based terror group Hamas have been bitterly divided since 2007, when a bloody civil war between the two rival Palestinian movements ended with Hamas expelling Fatah from the Gaza Strip. Several attempts have been made since to mend the rift in Palestinian politics, but so far none of has been successful.Rajoub said that the joint rally would send a message of Palestinian unity to the world, while emphasizing that the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Liberation Organization would remain in charge.“We must raise the voices of the united Palestinian people, who adhere to the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders and the return of refugees in accordance with international law, under the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization,” Rajoub said.In what they called a step towards “national unity,” Rajoub and Hamas deputy Salih al-Arouri held a press conference on July 2, in which they announced that the two movements would coordinate on anti-annexation activities.Arouri has directed numerous terrorist attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians, including the 2014 murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank. In 2018, the US State Department issued a $5 million bounty for his capture.“All the controversial issues on which we differ, we will set those aside… We and Fatah and all the Palestinian factions are facing an existential threat, and we must work together,” said Arouri.Arouri said that coordination between the two organizations would begin “a new phase that will be a strategic service to our people,” emphasizing that Hamas would use “all forms of struggle and resistance against the annexation project.”The announcement was received with broad skepticism among Palestinians, who have seen numerous reconciliation attempts — and even unity governments on paper — come and go without tangible results. While the two leaders sought to downplay differences between the two organizations, many seemed doubtful that this time was any different.“Our people have an enormous amount of skepticism with regard to the potential for national unity. Previous attempts did not end up having an impact on the ground,” Hamas deputy Hussam Badran acknowledged at a subsequent press conference with Fatah Central Committee member Ahmad Hilles.A joint rally with a speech by Abbas, who has little love for the terror group which expelled his movement for the Gaza Strip, could allay some of the cynicism among Palestinians about the potential for reconciliation.Deep divisions between the two groups still remain, however. While Fatah officials have made declarations in recent weeks about cooperation with Hamas, the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority does not seem to have permitted the terror group a freer hand in the West Bank.On the same day that Rajoub and al-Arouri held their press conference, PA security forces broke up a rally in Jenin at which Hamas flags were raised. Hamas condemned the action, calling on the PA to “preserve the spirit of unity,” according to the Hamas-linked Safa News Agency.

At least one possible tornado is under investigation after the intense storms that slammed southern Ontario Sunday and prompted numerous tornado warnings from the late morning to the early afternoon.Environment Canada said the storms produced the possible tornado in the Belmont area, based on damage to trees and buildings investigated by the Northern Tornadoes Project. The tornado has not been given a rating as of yet, and the Northern Tornadoes Project will be further investigating the wind damage in southwestern Ontario Monday.Sunday's storms brought torrential rains, strong wind gusts near 100 km/h, frequent lightning and flash flooding, impacting large portions of the region. Tornado warnings were issued for parts of the southwest, GTA and cottage country during the day, following the storms for some two hours before being dropped a little after 1 p.m.See below for the impacts from the powerful thunderstorms, which included numerous downed trees and power lines, widespread power outages and various property damage in multiple locations.Significant damage here just north of Lucan. @weathernetwork @westernuNTP #onstorm pic.twitter.com/d5a9dAdBm — Mark Robinson (@StormhunterTWN) July 20, 2020 Storm damage in Bayfield ON @theweathernetwork#bayfield #ONstorm #GrandBend pic.twitter.com/81V4j58zK9 — Valerie Wald (@Wheres00Waldo) July 19, 2020 Here are some more pictures of what we are helping @HydroOne with on Old Walnut Road in Alvinston. #staysafe pic.twitter.com/Eb1cO0lMCO — Bluewater Power (@BluewaterPower) July 19, 2020 #ONStorm swept through #Guelph - yikes - sorry about the #tesla tho pic.twitter.com/Gj5fqnOPUU  — Kate Revington (@KateRevGuelph) July 19, 2020 So this happened around 11:15am-So grateful nobody was hurt but trees down and my newly constructed garden was flattened ??#Kirkton #ONStorm pic.twitter.com/RUhl9exj8c — Lianne Young (@LianneYoung7) July 19, 2020 Flash flooding in Lakeshore, Ont. First Arab space mission to Mars launches from Japan-The Times of Israel-United Arab Emirates wants ‘Amal,’ or ‘Hope’ mission to serve as a source of inspiration for Arab youth, in a region too often wracked by sectarian conflicts and economic crises-By Mari Yamaguchi and Victoria Milko-july 20,20-Today, 1:40 am

TOKYO (AP) — A United Arab Emirates spacecraft rocketed away Monday on a seven-month journey to Mars, kicking off the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission. The liftoff of the Mars orbiter named Amal, or Hope, from Japan marked the start of a rush to fly to Earth’s neighbor that includes attempts by China and the United States. The UAE said its ‘Amal’ space probe was functioning after launch as it heads toward Mars.Omran Sharaf, the project director of Emirates Mars Mission, told journalists in Dubai about an hour and a half after the liftoff that the probe was sending signals. Sharaf said his team now would examine the data, but everything appeared good for now.People cheered and clapped, with one woman with offering a celebratory cry common for weddings.Hope is set to reach Mars in February 2021, the year the UAE celebrates 50 years since the country’s formation. An H-IIA rocket with United Arab Emirates’ Mars orbiter Hope lifts off from Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima, southern Japan Monday, July 20, 2020. (Hiroki Yamauchi/Kyodo News via AP)-It blasted off from the Tanegashima Space Center on a small southern Japanese island aboard a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ H-IIA rocket, on time at 6:58 a.m. (2158 GMT Sunday) into the blue sky. The launch had been delayed for five days because of stormy weather. At Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai, Emirati men in their traditional white kandora robes and women in their black abayas watched transfixed as the rocket lifted off. As its stages separated, a cheer went out from a group of Emirati men seated on the floor. They began clapping, one using his face mask due to the coronavirus pandemic to wipe away a tear.“It was great to see everything going according to schedule today. It looks like things are all on track. It’s a huge step in terms of space exploration to have a nation like the UAE taking that giant leap to send a spacecraft to Mars,” Astronomer Fred Watson said.“Being on route to a planet like Mars is an exceptional achievement.”Emirati men claps as they watch the launch of the Amal or Hope space probe at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, July 20, 2020. (AP Photo/Jon Gambrell)-A newcomer in space development, the UAE has successfully put three Earth observation satellites into orbit. Two were developed by South Korea and launched by Russia, and a third — its own — was launched by Japan.A successful Hope mission to Mars would be a major step for the oil-dependent economy seeking a future in space, coming less than a year after the launch of the first UAE astronaut, Hazzaa Ali Almansoori. He spent over a week at the International Space Station last fall. The UAE has set a goal to build a human colony on Mars by 2117.A picture taken on July 19, 2020, shows a screen broadcasting the launch in Japan of the Hope Mars probe at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai. (Giuseppe CACACE / AFP)-“It sends a very strong message to the Arab youth that if the UAE is able to reach Mars in less than 50 years, they could do much more,” Omran Sharaf, the project director of Emirates Mars Mission, told The Associated Press on Sunday as his colleagues prepared for the launch. The Emiratis involved in the program also acknowledged it represented a step forward for the Arab world, the home of mathematicians and scientists for centuries before the wars and chaos that have gripped wide swathes of it in recent times.“So the region has been going through tough times in the past decades, if not centuries,” Sharaf said. “Now we have the case of the UAE, a country that’s moving forward with its plans, looking at the future and the future of region also.”For its first Mars mission, the UAE chose partners instead of doing it all on its own.“Developing a spacecraft is not easy even if there is ample funding,” said Junya Terazono, an astronomer at Aizu University.Emirati scientists worked with researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, University of California, Berkeley and Arizona State University. The spacecraft was assembled at Boulder and transported to Japan as the two countries looked to expand their ties with the rich and politically stable Middle Eastern nation.Omran Sharaf, the project director for the Emirates’ Hope space probe to Mars, speaks on his mobile phone at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Sunday, July 19, 2020.(AP Photo/Jon Gambrell-The Hope spacecraft, along with its launch, cost $200 million, according to Omran Sharaf, the UAE project manager. Operation costs at Mars have yet to be divulged.Hope, about the size of a small car, carries three instruments to study the upper atmosphere and monitor climate change while circling the red planet for at least two years. It is set to follow up on NASA’s Maven orbiter sent to Mars in 2014 to study how it went from a warm, wet world that may have harbored microbial life during its first billion years, to the cold, barren place of today.Hope also plans to send back images of weather changes.Japan, a U.S. ally, has already long collaborated in defense and space technology.Resource-poor Japan has traditionally kept friendly ties with Middle Eastern countries. In recent years, Japan has increasingly stepped up trade and defense ties with the UAE, and now seeks to expand its space business. Two other Mars missions are planned in the coming days by the U.S. and China. The U.S. plans to send a rover named Perseverance to search for signs of ancient life and collect rock and soil samples for return to Earth. Liftoff is targeted for July 30. China aims to explore Mars with an orbiter and rover to study the planet’s surface, and search for water and ice. This launch is set for around July 23.Japan has its own Mars mission planned in 2024.Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, plans to send a spacecraft to the Martian moon Phobos to collect samples to bring back to Earth in 2029.

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Extreme heat fuelling storm risk across Atlantic Canada-[The Weather Network]-Digital Writers-July 20, 2020

Atlantic Canada is sweltering to start out the week, with temperatures feeling hotter than 30 across most of the region, and closer to or even beyond 40 for parts of New Brunswick. As such, the region features a widespread non-severe storm risk, except for parts of New Brunswick, where isolated storms may turn severe. For a closer look, see below.Visit our Complete Guide to Summer 2020 for an in-depth look at the Summer Forecast, tips to plan for it and much more-WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS-Temperatures feeling hotter than 30 for first half of the week except for some parts of Newfoundlan-Storm risk across the region Thursday, severe possible in New Brunswick-Keep an eye on severe weather ALERTS in your area TUESDAY: SWELTERING HEAT AND STORM RISK-A surge of sweltering warmth is gripping the Atlantic provinces, triggering heat warnings for much of the region, including all of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, much of New Brunswick, and parts of northern Newfoundland.Central and western New Brunswick will be the hottest part of the region Monday, with humidex values near or above 40, but even parts of Newfoundland will feel hotter than 30-All this heat and humidity are prime ingredients in thunderstorm formation, and much of the region has some chance of seeing storms Monday afternoon. However, the risk won't be even. With New Brunswick's humidex being the most intense, it is there where the most severe risk will be, with forecasters eyeing the southwest. Any storms that do spark will feature heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. The extreme humidity will endure across much of the region for a couple more days, but except for a slight risk in Newfoundland Tuesday, the risk looks to largely subside for the rest of the Atlantic provinces.Check back for updates as the forecast evolves.

Chevron’s $5b Noble Energy buy brings a new owner to Israel natural gas fields-The Times of Israel-july 20,20-Noble Energy has played a key role in discovering and developing Israel’s mammoth offshore natural gas fields, Tamar and Leviathan-By Shoshanna Solomon-Today, 4:25 pm

Chevron Corporation, the multinational energy firm, said Monday it had entered into a definitive agreement with Noble Energy, Inc. to buy all of the outstanding shares of the Huston, Texas-based oil and gas explorer, in an all-stock transaction valued at $5 billion, or $10.38 per share. The deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Monday.Noble Energy has stakes in Israel’s mammoth gas fields Tamar and Leviathan Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said in a text message that he welcomed the acquisition and the entry of Chevron to the Israeli energy market.“The acquisition of Noble Energy by the energy giant Chevron is a tremendous expression of confidence in the Israeli energy economy, and in the continued development and export of natural gas from the State of Israel,” he said, adding that the energy ministry will examine the request for the transfer of ownership of the rights to the fields once it is submitted to the ministry. By Israeli law, the rights to energy fields cannot be transferred without approval of Israel’s petroleum council.A crane vessel makes its way to Israel to help set up the Leviathan natural gas platform. (Noble Energy)-Based on Chevron’s closing price on July 17, 2020, and under the terms of the agreement, Noble Energy shareholders will receive 0.1191 shares of Chevron for each Noble Energy share. The total value of the deal, including debt, is $13 billion, Chevron said. The price of the deal represents a 7.6 percent premium to Noble’s closing price on Friday of $9.65.The acquisition makes it the largest tie-up in the oil industry since the start of the coronavirus pandemic that triggered a plunge in prices in the industry, the Wall Street Journal said. The acquisition of Noble Energy provides Chevron with “low-cost, proved reserves and attractive undeveloped resources that will enhance an already advantaged upstream portfolio,” Chevron said in the statement. “Noble Energy brings low-capital, cash-generating offshore assets in Israel, strengthening Chevron’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean.”The deal will also enhance Chevron’s position in the US.“Our strong balance sheet and financial discipline gives us the flexibility to be a buyer of quality assets during these challenging times,” said Chevron Chairman and CEO Michael Wirth in the statement. “This is a cost-effective opportunity for Chevron to acquire additional proved reserves and resources. Noble Energy’s multi-asset, high-quality portfolio will enhance geographic diversity, increase capital flexibility, and improve our ability to generate strong cash flow. These assets play to Chevron’s operational strengths, and the transaction underscores our commitment to capital discipline.”Noble Energy has a portfolio of assets that include wells offshore in the Eastern Mediterranean, off the west coast of Africa and onshore in the US. At the end of 2019, the firm had proved reserves of 2.05 billion barrels of oil equivalent, according to its website.Noble Energy, which had revenues of $4.44 billion in 2019, started production of natural gas from the Leviathan field, the firm’s largest discovery to date, in December 2019. The firm has a 39.66% stake in the field, and is partners in the site with Ratio Oil Exploration (1992) LP., which holds a 15% stake and Delek Drilling LP , with a 45.43% stake.Noble also has stakes in the the nearby Tamar field, which started producing gas in 2013 and has been supplying Israel with the fuel. Tamar holds some 10 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, half of the amount held in Leviathan. Noble also has a stake in the Dalit field offshore Israel. The shares of Ratio were trading almost 15% higher on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange at 2.18pm in Tel Aviv. The shares of Delek Drilling were up 12%.“It doesn’t physically change anything, but the sentiment is good,” said Saar Golan, a trader at Bank Leumi Le-Israel in a phone interview. The new owner of the Israeli fields has a market cap of $163 billion as opposed to the $4.6 billion of Noble. “It puts the Israeli assets in stronger, more stable hands,” he said.“Over the last few years, we have made significant progress executing our strategic objectives, including driving capital efficiency gains onshore, advancing our offshore conventional gas developments and significantly reducing our cost structure,” said David Stover, Noble Energy’s Chairman and CEO.Noble’s large-scale, producing Eastern Mediterranean position “is expected to generate strong returns and cash flow with low capital requirements,” Chevron said in the statement. The transaction is expected to achieve cost synergies of $300 million before-tax within a year of closing, the statement said.

K says Russian intelligence trying to steal virus vaccine research-The Times of Israel-searchers in Britain, US, Canada said targeted as London vows ‘to hold perpetrators to account’-By AFP-JULY 16,20-Today, 6:02 pm 0

LONDON, United Kingdom — Britain’s cybersecurity agency on Thursday accused a hacking group it said “almost certainly” operates as part of Russian intelligence services of trying to steal research into potential coronavirus vaccines. Russia denied the claim.Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre said the attacks by the group APT29 were ongoing but targets have so far included UK, US and Canadian vaccine research and development organizations.“The NCSC assesses that APT29, also named the Dukes or Cozy Bear, almost certainly operate as part of Russian Intelligence Services,” it said, adding that the United States and Canada shared this view.Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab expressed outrage at the findings, which were published alongside an advisory on how organizations can help protect themselves from cyber attacks.Britain’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab arrives for a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 10 Downing Street in London, January 30, 2020. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth)-“It is completely unacceptable that the Russian Intelligence Services are targeting those working to combat the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.“While others pursue their selfish interests with reckless behavior, the UK and its allies are getting on with the hard work of finding a vaccine and protecting global health.“The UK will continue to counter those conducting such cyber attacks, and work with our allies to hold perpetrators to account.”The NCSC said that government, diplomatic, think tank, healthcare and energy groups were mainly being targeted, in a bid “to steal valuable intellectual property.”The Kremlin denied the claims.Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow, Russia, April 6, 2017. (AP Photo/Pavel Golovkin)“We have no information on who could have hacked pharmaceutical companies and research centers in Britain,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the TASS news agency.“We can only say this: Russia has nothing to do with these attempts. We do not accept such accusations.”The same applied to “the latest groundless allegations of interference in 2019 elections,” he said. The British government accused “Russian actors” on Thursday of seeking to disrupt last year’s general election in the UK by circulating leaked trade documents between London and Washington.Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier mocked the British claim, saying it was “so hazy and contradictory that it’s practically impossible to understand.”“On the one hand, there’s no evidence. On the other hand they are talking about some retaliatory measures. These things are mutually exclusive,” she said.

Check Point researchers help fix cybersecurity flaw in Zoom software-The Times of Israel-Attackers had opportunity to impersonate an organization’s customized Zoom URL link and send legitimate-looking invitations to victims; problem now fixed-By Shoshanna Solomon-july 16,20-Today, 1:57 pm

Researchers at Israeli cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. said Thursday that they helped the maker of the popular Zoom video conferencing software find and fix a security issue that could have led to successful phishing attempts.Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to get sensitive information or data, such as usernames or passwords or credit card details, by criminals disguising themselves as trustworthy entities in electronic communications with the victims; the criminals send victims links to click on that then direct them to enter personal information into fake websites. The lockdowns imposed globally by the coronavirus pandemic have led to a surge in the use of the Zoom videoconferencing platform, with usage soaring to over 300 million daily participants in meetings in April from 10 million in December 2019.But this explosive growth in the use of the software has brought in its wake cyber-criminals, said researchers at the cybersecurity firm, who have worked with Zoom Video Communications to improve the security of the platform, after they found the flaw.“The explosive growth in Zoom usage has been matched by an increase in new domain registrations with names including the word ‘Zoom,’ indicating that cyber-criminals are targeting Zoom domains as phishing bait to lure victims,” wrote Adi Ikan, Liri Porat and Ori Hamama in a blog post of the Israeli firm. “We have also detected malicious files impersonating Zoom’s installation program.”The current flaw was found in Zoom’s Vanity URL, which allows organizations to create a customized version of Zoom’s invitation links — so instead of the standard Zoom link the person gets one with the organization’s name and logo in it.Prior to Zoom’s fix, the flaw would have given an attacker the possibility to impersonate an organization’s Vanity URL link, and even the logo of the firm, and send invitations from the organization, which appeared to be legitimate, to trick a victim. An additional flaw allowed attackers to access the official websites companies set up with Zoom, via which to hold their meetings. Hackers could have then invited victims to meetings, sending links from these websites. Thus, when the victims click join, to enter a meeting, and get prompted to introduce the meeting ID, they would have no way of knowing that the invitation actually didn’t come from the legitimate organization, the researchers said.“There are many relevant day-to-day scenarios that could potentially have been leveraged using this impersonation method, which could have resulted in a successful phishing attempt,” the researchers wrote. “For example, an attacker could have introduced themselves as legitimate employees in the company, sending an invitation from an organization’s Vanity URL to relevant customers in order to gain credibility. This activity could have then been leveraged to stealing credentials and sensitive information, as well as other fraud actions.”In an emailed comment, Zoom said: “Zoom has addressed the issue reported by Check Point and put additional safeguards in place for the protection of its users. Zoom encourages its users to thoroughly review the details of any meeting they plan to attend prior to joining, and to only join meetings from users they trust. We appreciate Check Point notifying us of this issue. If you think you’ve found a security issue with Zoom products, please send a detailed report to security@zoom.us.”In January this year Check Point researchers said hackers were able to potentially identify and join active meetings to which they weren’t invited, causing Zoom to quickly introduce a number of fixes that ensured that such attacks are no longer possible.Check Point researchers have also issued guidelines on how to use Zoom safely.

Court upholds incitement conviction for Islamist preacher Raed Salah-The Times of Israel-Judges say firebrand head of outlawed group gave speeches in support of gunmen who killed 2 police officers at Temple Mount in 2017, sparking more violence-By TOI staff-july 16,20-Today, 3:09 pm

Sheikh Raed Salah, the firebrand leader of an outlawed Islamist group, will serve 28 months in prison for incitement to violence, an Israeli court said Thursday, rejecting an appeal against his conviction.Salah, the leader of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement, was convicted by the Haifa Magistrate’s Court in November of incitement to terror and membership in an outlawed organization, after he spoke out in support of a terror attack on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount that left two police officers dead and inflamed regional tensions. The Haifa District Court upheld the conviction and a 28-month sentence, but ruled that Salah would not need to report to prison until August 4 so that he can celebrate the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which ends a day earlier.Salah, a former mayor of Umm al-Fahm who has become a cause celebre in some pro-Palestinian circles, has served several stints in prison for incitement or support for terror.According to the the verdict, Salah, 61, gave a sermon on July 21, 2017, in which he praised “martyrs of Al-Aqsa,” and those “guarding” the flashpoint compound, home to the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.“For eight days they have not stopped [saying] over and over ‘In blood and spirit we will liberate Al-Aqsa. Have not stopped confronting the Israeli occupation, confronting the guns of the Israeli occupation, unafraid of the batons of the Israeli occupation and not afraid to be injured, wounded, arrested, not afraid of anything but Allah,” he said, according to the charge sheet. The sermon came a week after three men from Umm al-Fahm carried out a shooting attack at the entrance to the Temple Mount, killing two policemen. In the wake of the attack, Israel first shut the compound, and then installed metal detectors at the site, a move that led Palestinians to hold massive protests outside, ratcheting up already high tensions.Muslim worshipers perform noon prayers by the Lions Gate, outside the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem’s Old City, July 20, 2017. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Salah gave a similar speech at a symbolic funeral for the three gunmen in Umm al Fahm, and a would-be stabber from the city who was arrested in Tel Aviv days later indicated he had been inspired by Salah’s words, according to the conviction.Salah had argued in his defense that his views were religious opinions rooted in the Quran and did not constitute a direct call to violence.“It’s all lies,” he said after his original sentencing, according to the Haaretz daily. “Everything that was said [by the court] was far from the truth. I don’t know where they got this stuff that was attributed to me. It looks like someone wrote lies about me and the court presented them as facts.”The judges in the appeal also rejected Salah’s contention that the attack was not terror, calling the claim “outrageous,” and noting that his use of the word “martyr,” or shahid, supported the contention that it was terror. They also rejected the idea that the conviction impinged on free speech, saying that it did not extend to support for acts of violence, especially for a community leader.“The leader knows that the public looks to him and learns from his words, as well as his silence, on supporting criminal acts. And so he bears responsibility,” they wrote in the verdict.Sheikh Raed Salah, center, arrives at the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court on August 15, 2017. (AFP/JACK GUEZ)-A contention that Salah’s Northern Branch organization should not be outlawed was rejected by the court as outside its purview.Israel banned the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement on November 17, 2015, charging the hard-line offshoot organization had links to terrorist groups and had helped incite a wave of stabbing attacks and car-rammings that was taking place at the time. The group rejects the Oslo peace accords between Israel and the Palestinians and boycotts national elections on the grounds that they give legitimacy to the institutions of the Jewish state. There was no immediate comment from Salah. In May 2016, as he began his last term in prison for similar offenses, he told hundreds of well-wishers that he was “honored to go to prison for the sake of Al-Aqsa.”

Jordan’s top court dissolves country’s Muslim Brotherhood-The Times of Israel-Amman moves against Islamist group defined by Egypt as a terrorist organization; leader insists it is ‘a model of moderation’-By Kamal Taha-july 16,20-Today, 5:06 pm

AMMAN, Jordan (AFP) — Jordan’s top court has dissolved the country’s branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist movement, an official said Thursday, citing the group’s failure to “rectify its legal status.”“The Court of Cassation yesterday (Wednesday) issued a final verdict ruling that the Muslim Brotherhood group is dissolved… for failing to rectify its legal status under Jordanian law,” the official said, requesting anonymity.-The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a pan-Islamic movement with both charitable and political arms.It has faced years of pressure, especially in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, and has been outlawed as a “terrorist” group in Egypt and banned in several other countries.Amman had tolerated the group’s political arm for decades, but since 2014 authorities have considered it illegal, arguing its license was not renewed under a 2014 law on political parties. It continued to operate, but its relations with the Jordanian state deteriorated further from 2015 when the government authorized an offshoot group, the Muslim Brotherhood Association. In this photo taken on December 13, 2017, a Jordanian man takes part in a demonstration organized by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic movements outside the American embassy in the capital Amman against the US president’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-In April 2016, security services closed the Brotherhood’s Amman headquarters and several regional offices, transferring their ownership to the splinter group in a step the movement denounced as political. The original Brotherhood took the case to court in a bid to retrieve the properties, but the court in its verdict Wednesday ordered it dissolved. The Brotherhood argues that it had already obtained licences to operate under previous laws in the 1940s and 1950s — and stressed that it would appeal Wednesday’s ruling. The group’s spokesman, Moaz al-Khawaldeh, said the Muslim Brotherhood did not consider the ruling as “final” and that a legal team was preparing to appeal.“The Brotherhood will not melt away because of an administrative ruling and we continue to carry out our activities in alternative rental properties,” Khawaldeh told AFP.This file photo taken on April 13, 2016 shows men standing outside the main entrance of the Muslim Brotherhood’s office in the Jordanian capital, after it was shut by police acting on orders of the Amman governor. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-“The ruling is not final and our legal team is meeting in order to submit the legal documents necessary to appeal” the verdict, he added.‘Not outlaws’Sheikh Hamza Mansur, head of the organization’s ruling council, said the group would appeal against Wednesday’s ruling.“The Muslim Brotherhood… is a model of moderation and an important element in strengthening national unity, so dissolving it is not in the national interest,” he told AFP.Khawaldeh echoed him, adding: “We are not outlaws.”“We are ready to develop our legal status within a framework that could be agreed upon.In this photo taken on December 29, 2017, Jordanian police stand guard as protesters wave Palestinian and Muslim Brotherhood flags during a demonstration against the US president’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in the Jordanian capital Amman. (Khalil Mazraawi/AFP)-“But unfortunately the authorities have shut the doors (to negotiations)… and are not offering any initiative to solve this crisis,” he said. The breakaway group — the Muslim Brotherhood Association — aimed to sever ties with the Brotherhood in Egypt, where hundreds of supporters have been killed and thousands detained since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.Jordan’s Islamic Action Front, a political party aligned with the original Brotherhood chapter there, has had 16 members of parliament since 2016 elections. It had boycotted polls in 2010 and 2013. Elections are set for later this year but the coronavirus crisis has cast doubt over whether they will take place. The Jordanian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood has wide grassroots support in the kingdom. The movement is also banned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the region, but is supported by Turkey and Qatar.

In Washington, a debate over conditioning US aid to Israel heats up-The Times of Israel-Restricting assistance now 'a mainstream idea'-With Netanyahu claiming to be on the brink of annexing parts of the West Bank, moderate Democrats are calling for fundamental changes to America’s funding policy-By Eric Cortellessa-july 16,20-Today, 3:21 am

WASHINGTON — If Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unilaterally annexes parts of the West Bank, he will do so knowing that virtually the entire United States Democratic Party opposes the move. The entire leadership has spoken out against it, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and at least 210 of the 233 Democrats in Congress have sent or signed on to letters urging Jerusalem to drop the proposal. But now, some Democrats are no longer just stating their disapproval of annexation; they are now calling for a policy response should Netanyahu go through with it.last week, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen introduced an amendment to the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to block US funds from going toward the prime minister’s planned annexation of roughly 30 percent of the West Bank. The motion currently has 13 co-sponsors, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, and is backed by a coalition of liberal Zionist groups, such as J Street and Americans for Peace Now.J Street Executive Director Jeremy Ben-Ami addressing the group’s conference in Washington, March 21, 2015. (Courtesy JTA/J Street)-“It’s a mainstream idea now being actively discussed in the United States Senate, in the heart of the Democratic Party, that in light of contemplated Israeli actions, there has to be some set of restrictions in the way American assistance is shaped,” said Jeremy Ben-Ami, founder and president of the liberal Mideast advocacy organization J Street. The Van Hollen amendment doesn’t go as far as a letter orchestrated by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and signed by some of the most progressive members of Congress — such as Sanders — that calls for reducing the $3.8 billion in annual aid to Israel if the country moves forward on annexation.Instead, it would keep US assistance at the same levels, but bar American taxpayer dollars from being used to annex the West Bank.“People who want to cut aid generally don’t want to see the full check of $3.8 billion actually delivered,” Ben-Ami told The Times of Israel. “People who want to restrict aid are perfectly comfortable with the $3.8 billion, but it just shouldn’t be used for the following purposes.”Still, the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has expressed strong opposition to the amendment, tweeting that it would “weaken Israel’s defenses” and limit “where Israel can place lifesaving missile defense systems like Iron Dome.”At the same time, all sides know that with a Republican majority in the Senate and US President Donald Trump in the White House, the amendment has no chance of being passed and signed into law.US President Donald Trump, left, listens as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right, speaks during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, January 28, 2020, to announce the Trump administration’s much-anticipated plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)-Activists and analysts argue, therefore, that its significance comes more in the form of what it symbolizes than what it might tangibly accomplish in the short term.“There is now more consensus within the Democratic Party on opposing annexation than on supporting the same level of American aid to Israel,” a veteran Democratic operative close to presidential candidate Joe Biden told The Times of Israel. In a politically fractured Israel, Netanyahu has pushed for annexing, as early as this summer, all of the settlements and the entire Jordan Valley — the parts of the West Bank allocated to Israel under Trump’s plan, which theoretically envisions a Palestinian state in the remaining territory with land swaps.US assistance cannot be and should not be a blank check- For Ben-Ami, whose organization has been leading a campaign against annexation in Washington, the amendment’s support among leading and more moderate Democrats such as Van Hollen marks a fundamental shift in how the party views the nature of American aid to Israel.“I think the bigger argument is really over the question of whether it’s appropriate to have restrictions [on funding], period,” Ben-Ami said. “One can quibble here or there about a word and change the meaning of the exact drafting, but I think the principle is what Senator Van Hollen and his co-sponsors have established here: US assistance cannot be and should not be a blank check.”This debate is ‘not going away’The amendment is not supported by everyone on the left. Michael Koplow, the policy director of the Israel Policy Forum, which advocates a two-state solution, wrote in a column last Thursday that he did not consider it a “wise policy move.”But Koplow noted that “the sudden prominence of the debate over conditioning assistance to Israel is inextricably linked to annexation and thus is not going away.” He described the Van Hollen proposal as the “only option left to send a message [to Israel] that goes beyond strongly worded objections.”Halie Soifer heads the Jewish Democratic Council of America. (Courtesy of JDCA)-Halie Soifer, head of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, emphasized that Biden has stated that he wouldn’t touch aid to Israel, calling the idea “outrageous,” and that only 13 of the 45 Senate Democrats have co-sponsored the amendment.“Yes, there is a discussion going on amongst some, but when it comes to those leading the party — and hopefully soon from the White House — it doesn’t appear that they are part of that conversation, nor do they want to be,” Soifer told The Times of Israel. But Palestinian-American pollster Shibley Telhami of the Brookings Institution said that Democratic grassroots activists have wanted see changes to America’s Israel policy for years. In 2014, for instance, he published a survey that found 77% of Democrats wanted the United States to remain neutral on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.University of Maryland Professor Shibley Telhami (Wikimedia Commons)-Since then, he said, a number of factors have made Democratic politicians willing to adopt a more aggressive posture toward Israel — Netanyahu’s acrimonious relationship with former president Barack Obama; Sanders’s strong constituency during the 2016 primary that cared about Palestinian rights; and the Israeli premier’s close alliance with Trump. The looming possibility of annexation has only intensified and accelerated that political shift, suggested Telhami, the Anwar Sadat professor for peace and development at the University of Maryland.“Van Hollen and his colleagues are trying to balance their historical support for Israel — and Van Hollen has always been supportive of Israel and securing aid to Israel — and their anger with annexation and policies that go against the ethos of what a Democrat is and what they stand for,” he said.Telhami conducted a poll in March that found 81% of Democratic respondents favored Israel’s democracy more than its Jewishness. (Forty-four percent of Republicans said the same.)-Most Democrats, however, want Israel to survive as a Jewish democracy, he said, and fear that Netanyahu is taking steps that will make that outcome increasingly unrealistic.“They don’t want to be put in that position. They support a Jewish state. They support a democratic state,” Telhami said. “Annexation puts them in a position in which they have to make a choice. So they are now taking steps to prevent that from happening.”

Central bank head joins wave of criticism against ‘inefficient’ stimulus payouts-The Times of Israel-Amit Yaron says government could have taken better, more effective steps to direct money to those who need it most, predicts economy will continue to slide-By TOI staff-july 16,20-Today, 11:06 am

The country’s top banking official criticized a financial stimulus package proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying Thursday there were better ways than universal handouts to help the country weather the pandemic.Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron joined growing pushback from economists and politicians against the plan, which will deliver one-time payments of hundreds of shekels to all Israelis, regardless of their financial situation, in a bid to inject money into the faltering economy.“I think there are better ways and more efficient ways to increase demand,” Yaron told Army Radio. “We have a safety net and we do need to increase demand, but I think there are more efficient ways.”The plan will see couples with one child receive a one-time payment of NIS 2,000 ($583), which rises to NIS 2,500 ($729) for those with two children, and NIS 3,000 ($875) for those with three or more. Single Israelis aged over will receive NIS 750 ($218). It is expected to cost NIS 6 billion ($1.75 billion).Yaron suggested that instead, the government could temporarily and retroactively raise unemployment benefits for those who are out of work, on furlough, or self-employed to 90 percent of their normal income, as a way to target those who needed the financial aid the most.People wearing face masks as they shop at the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem on July 15, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Yaron, who said that Bank of Israel officials had been consulted about the plan in its initial stages but only heard of the final result through the media, also said that it did have “positive aspects” in terms of boosting economic activity, but “could have been targeted a tad better.”“The main thing now is stabilizing the economy,” he said. “There are a few things that are tied to increasing demand and growth, some of them by going straight to the consumer. The question is if in this case it should be a direct [payment]. Or if it’s possible to aim this toward those who need it and will use it immediately.”He pointed to vouchers given out in some East Asian countries that ensured spending on certain items in certain places. While Netanyahu said Israel had enough of a “rainy day fund” to cover the payments, Yaron warned that Israel needed to be prepared for the economy to slump even further before the end of the pandemic and should focus on growth later, not now.He said forecasts showed the deficit would double from its current 6.4 percent of GDP by the end of the year to 13%, even if Israel only imposes partial restrictions at two-thirds the level of the initial lockdown in order to curb the virus.“If we have another lockdown, it will cost us NIS 40 billion more. I think that when we are done with this we’ll return to growth,” he said.A man wears a protective face masks in Tel Aviv on July 15, 2020. (Miriam Alster/FLASH90)-Other finance officials have reportedly leveled harsher criticism at the plan, including Treasury director Keren Terner Eyal, who likened the proposal to “throwing suitcases of money that we don’t have into the sea,” according to Channel 13.A meeting between finance officials on the proposal ahead of its release devolved into a shouting match heard in nearby offices, Channel 12 news reported.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wears a face mask to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus as he chairs the weekly cabinet meeting, at the foreign ministry, in Jerusalem, July 5, 2020. (Gali Tibbon/Pool via AP)-Asked about the Finance Ministry’s opposition to the plan, Netanyahu was dismissive at a press conference Wednesday.Netanyahu said he was also working on “a long-term plan for the safe reopening of the economy, so we can deal with the coronavirus for as long as necessary — six months, a year, even more than a year.”Politicians also pilloried the proposal, including within Netanyahu’s government.“Blue and White supports directly transferring money to citizens, but this needs to be done with an emphasis on those whose livelihoods were hurt… we’ll deliberate this later in the government,” the party said in a statement.Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel of Derech Eretz called for “compensation for those that took a hit. Not widespread compensation. Business owners, self-employed people, the unemployed and vulnerable families need to get money. Working families do not.”Yoaz Hendel speaks at a conference in Ramat Gan on September 8, 2019. (Flash90)-Welfare Minister Itzik Shmuli, a member of the center-left Labor Party, said the plan neglected 80,000 business owners who needed support and lacked emergency funding for the disabled, children at risk and the elderly.Netanyahu is facing a groundswell of criticism over his response to the financial crisis as new infections in Israel rise at an alarming pace.Over 1,800 new infections were recorded between Tuesday night and Wednesday night, the highest-yet 24-hour total since the start of the pandemic. Over 200 people are in intensive care and 376 coronavirus carriers have died, according to Health Ministry figures.Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said Wednesday that Israel could return to a nationwide lockdown if immediate action isn’t taken to contain the virus, but ministers have sought to avoid such a step in order to keep from furtherbdestroying the economy.Magen David Adom evacuates a patient at the Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, July 8, 2020. (Flash90)-According to a Channel 13 poll released on Sunday evening, 61 percent of Israelis disapprove of Netanyahu’s overall handling of the pandemic, and 75% are unhappy with how his government has handled the economic fallout of the health crisis. Only 16% said they were satisfied with the government’s economic response.Over the weekend, thousands of people gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv to protest the government’s handling of the economic crisis and what they say is insufficient aid offered to small business owners and professionals in the hard-hit entertainment and hospitality industries. As of Wednesday, 853,843 people were out of work, amounting to an unemployment rate of 21%, the Israeli Employment Service said.

Israeli drones to help Florida’s emergency response to hurricane season-The Times of Israel-Percepto’s Sparrow can fly in winds up to 150 mph to assess storm damage-By Shoshanna Solomon-july 16,20-Today, 1:59 pm

Israeli startup Percepto, a maker of industrial drones, said that its Sparrow drone-in-a-box system been proven to be able to withstand winds of up to 150 mph, making it suitable to fly in the immediate aftermath of hurricanes to assess damage on the ground. The drone developed by the Modiin-based startup has passed level 5 hurricane testing at the Florida International University Wall of Wind, which performs hurricane mitigation research by testing out technologies in high wind conditions. The drone solution is the first one to pass this level of testing, the startup said in a statement on Thursday, making it “the most rugged drone-in-a-box system on the market.” The Sparrow drone platform is able to land in high winds and in snow.Ten percent of power outages globally are due to hurricanes, according to the World Bank, as they can directly damage the infrastructure of power plants and cooling towers. The firm’s customers include electricity firms such as Florida Power and Light (FPL) and Italy’s Enel, as well as Fortune 500 customers in more than 10 countries. The Sparrow system is set up to be stationed on-site, in a “base unit” — the box — where it lands, recharges, and transfers data it has acquired from its flights. The base also conducts maintenance checks on the functioning of the drone, verifying if repairs are needed.Percepto’s technology allows customers to react immediately after a hurricane, assessing and fixing any damage without endangering staff, when the weather is still very challenging and residents are experiencing electricity outages.FPL, one of the biggest energy companies in the US, posted $274 million of damages to its infrastructure in 2019 from Hurricane Dorian, which left 160,000 customers without power, according to the statement.“As soon as the storm passes, we can have this up…inspecting our plant and knowing immediately what sort of damage we have so we’re able to get our power back on that much sooner… for a utility to be able to see our infrastructure in areas where we can’t get to safely; to quickly fly over it and understand what our conditions are…the safety of our crews is paramount,” Michael Dorr, a pilot for Florida Power & Light’s drone system, said in the statement.FPL has six drones installed in five locations. By the end of the year FPL will have two further sites using Percepto’s solution on the Treasure Coast, one in St. Lucie County and another in Vero Beach, with a plan to deploy autonomous drones at all of its substations after that, the statement said.FPL’s goal is to eventually put a drone-in-a-box at every substation, transmission yard, plant and solar facility, according to Eric Schwartz, manager of FPL’s aerial intelligence response. “We can fly every single day and use image recognition to be able to identify a potential issue and reduce the number of outages to our customers,” he said. The Percepto Sparrow drones stay above 130 feet to avoid power poles and other obstructions.“Covid-19 has left critical sites such as power stations bereft of crucial staff, while hospitals and homes have become more vulnerable, isolated and dependent on their utility providers. For our customers, drones ensure minimal downtime despite staff shortages and in the worst weather conditions,” Dor Abuahsira, CEO of Percepto, said in the statement.

Blasts at Natanz site batter but don’t break Iran nuclear pursuits-The Times of IsraelAnalysis-Mysterious explosions unlikely to slow Tehran in growing its stockpile of low-enriched uranium, which had been curbed by nuclear deal that Trump abandoned
By Jon Gambrell-JULY 16,20-Today, 10:30 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A mysterious explosion and fire at Iran’s main nuclear facility may have stopped Tehran from building advanced centrifuges, but it likely has not slowed the Islamic Republic in growing its ever-increasing stockpile of low-enriched uranium.Limiting that stockpile represented one of the main tenets of the nuclear deal that world powers reached with Iran five years ago this week — an accord which now lies in tatters after US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from it two years ago.The larger that stockpile grows, the shorter the so-called “breakout time” becomes — time that Iran would need to build a nuclear weapon if it chooses to do so. And while Tehran insists its atomic program is for peaceful purposes, it has renewed threats to withdraw from a key nonproliferation treaty as the US tries to extend a UN arms embargo on Iran due to expire in October. All this raises the risk of further confrontation in the months ahead.A screenshot from video of a fire on a ship at the Bushehr port in southern Iran, July 15, 2020. (Screen capture: Twitter)-Iranian officials likely recognized that as they realized the scope of the July 2 blast at the Natanz compound in Iran’s central Isfahan province. They initially downplayed the fire, describing the site as a “shed” even as analysts immediately told The Associated Press that the blast struck Natanz’s new advanced centrifuge assembly facility.Days later, Iran acknowledged the fire struck that facility and raised the possibility of sabotage at the site, which was earlier targeted by the Stuxnet computer virus. Still, it has been careful not to directly blame the US or Israel, whose officials heavily hinted they had a hand in the fire. A claim of responsibility for the attack only raised suspicions of a foreign influence in the blast.A direct accusation by Tehran would increase the pressure on Iran’s Shiite theocracy to respond, something it apparently does not want to do yet.The explosion and fire, however, did not strike Natanz’s nderground centrifuge halls. That’s where thousands of first-generation gas centrifuges still spin, enriching uranium up to 4.5% purity. Meanwhile, enrichment also has resumed at Iran’s Fordo nuclear facility, built deep inside a mountain to protect it from potential airstrikes. Iran continues to experiment with previously built advanced centrifuges as well.Chinese President Xi Jinping, left, greets Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao in eastern China’s Shandong Province on June 10, 2018. (AP Photo/Alexander Zemlianichenko)-The explosion “at Natanz was above all a blow to Iran’s plans to move on to more advanced stages in its nuclear project,” wrote Sima Shine, the head of the Iran program at the Institute for National Security Studies in Israel who once worked in the country’s Mossad intelligence service.Shine cautioned: “However, it will not prevent Iran’s continued accumulation of enriched uranium, underway since Iran began its gradual violations of the nuclear agreement.”As of June, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had over 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of low-enriched uranium. The 2015 accord limited Iran to having only 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of uranium enriched to only 3.67%, far below weapons-grade levels of 90%.Now at 1,500 kilograms, Iran has enough material for a single nuclear weapon if it decides to pursue one. However, that stockpile still is far less than in the days before the 2015 deal, when Tehran had enough for over a dozen bombs and chose not to weaponize its stockpile.Iran would also need to further enrich that uranium, which would draw the attention of international inspectors still able to access its atomic facilities. And it would still need to build a bomb. But the “breakout time” Iran would require to assemble a weapon — estimated to be at least a year under the 2015 deal — has narrowed. This photo released July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)-All this comes after a series of incidents last year culminated in a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad in January, followed by a retaliatory Iranian ballistic missile attack targeting American troops in Iraq. Those tensions remain even today as the coronavirus pandemic engulfs both the US and Iran.Iran has already signaled willingness to use its nuclear program as a lever as a longstanding United Nations arms embargo on Tehran is set to expire in October. That ban has barred Iran since 2010 from buying major foreign weapon systems such as fighter jets and tanks.Iran has threatened to expel IAEA inspectors and withdraw from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty amid the US pressure campaign. North Korea, which now has nuclear weapons, is the only country to ever withdraw from the treaty.Expelling IAEA inspectors and potentially shutting down their cameras now watching Iranian nuclear facilities would blind them from being able to see if Iran pushes its uranium enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels. But that also could see Iran alienate China and Russia, which have both urged all parties to remain in the nuclear deal.Centrifuge machines in the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, November 5, 2019. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP, File)-The US hopes to extend the embargo, calling Iranian threats over it being renewed a “mafia tactic.” But Washington has issued its own threats, claiming it could invoke the “snapback” of all UN sanctions on Iran that were eased under nuclear deal unless the embargo is prolonged — despite having left the atomic accord. As Trump campaigns ahead of a November election, he may be more willing to take those risks to highlight that he followed through on his 2016 campaign promise to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and take a harder line on Tehran. The Islamic Republic in turn may be more willing to take risks as well.“The US diplomatic campaign, as well as suspected Israeli sabotage and continued attacks on US forces in Iraq, will raise overall tension with Iran and introduce new uncertainty into the calculations of the Iranian leadership,” the Eurasia Group warned in an analysis on Tuesday. “That could induce Iran to take more risky action in the nuclear realm, or retaliate for … snapback in Iraq or the region.”

Twitter accounts of Netanyahu, Biden, Obama, others hacked in Bitcoin scam-The Times of Israel-Fake tweets from prominent politicians, tech personalities solicit deposits to anonymous cryptocurrency account; feeds of Apple, Kanye West, Jeff Bezos, Mike Bloomberg also hacked-By Agencies-JULY 16,20-Today, 3:20 am

Unidentified hackers broke into the Twitter accounts of technology moguls, politicians, celebrities and major companies Wednesday in an apparent Bitcoin scam. The ruse included bogus tweets from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former US president Barack Obama, presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.Celebrities Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were also hacked, as were companies including Apple, Uber and Bitcoin specialty firms. The accounts include some of the most prominent on the platform — Obama has over 120 million followers, Kanye West has nearly 30 million, Musk has nearly 37 million and Gates has over 51 million.A screen capture of a tweet published on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s account after it was hacked on July 15, 2020, along with the accounts of other celebrities and world leaders. (Twitter)-The posts, which were largely deleted, were fired off from the array of high-profile accounts telling people they had 30 minutes to send $1,000 in Bitcoin to an anonymous account in order to be sent back twice as much.Comments and posts at Twitter indicated thousands of dollars in bitcoin may have been sent to the scammers’ digital account.A version of the scam invited people to click on a link at which they would be exploited. There is no evidence that the owners of the accounts were targeted themselves. Instead, the hacks appeared designed to lure their Twitter followers into sending money to an anonymous Bitcoin account. The Biden campaign, for instance, said that Twitter’s integrity team “locked down the account within a few minutes of the breach and removed the related tweet.”Obama’s office had no immediate comment. In a tweet, Twitter noted only that it was aware of a “security incident impacting accounts on Twitter.”The San Francisco company said it is investigating and promised an update shortly. It did not reply immediately to requests for comment.Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk speaks at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition in Washington, March 9, 2020. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)-Bezos, Gates and Musk are among the 10 richest people in the world, with tens of millions of followers on Twitter. The three men are worth a combined $362 billion, according to the latest calculations by Forbes magazine. The same bogus offer cropped up a second time on Musk’s account, which has a history of sometimes befuddling tweets from the eccentric billionaire. Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.Gates, who has become one of the world’s leading philanthropists since stepping down as Microsoft CEO, confirmed the tweet wasn’t from him. “This appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing,” a spokesperson for the billionaire said in a statement.Among the political figures targeted, the hack mostly appeared to target Democrats or other figures on the left, drawing comparisons to the 2016 presidential campaign.US intelligence agencies established that Russia engaged in coordinated attempts to interfere in those US elections through social media tampering and various hacks, including targeting the various campaigns and major party organizations.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jemele Hill call out anti-Semitism in the Black communityThe Times of Israel-BA legend and columnist, sports journalist decry lackluster response to anti-Jewish statements by NFL’s DeSean Jackson, rapper Ice CubeBy Marcy Oster-july 16,20-Today, 2:17 am

JTA — In the wake of a string of high-profile controversies involving the rapper Ice Cube and NFL player DeSean Jackson, two prominent Black commentators called out anti-Semitism in the Black community this week: NBA Hall of Famer-turned columnist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and sports journalist Jemele Hill.In his latest column for The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Abdul-Jabbar argues that there has been a “shocking lack of massive indignation” over recent statements on social media by various sports and entertainment figures that perpetuate anti-Semitic canards. He cites messages posted by Ice Cube; Jackson; comedian Chelsea Handler, who is Jewish but boosted a defense of Louis Farrakhan’s history of anti-Semitic remarks; and the former NBA player Stephen Jackson, who in defending DeSean Jackson’s original post brought up a conspiracy theory involving the Rothschilds and world domination.Abdul-Jabbar, who has written a regular column since 2017, says Hollywood and the sports world did a collective “shrug of meh-rage” in response to those incidents.“[I]f it’s OK to discriminate against one group of people by hauling out cultural stereotypes without much pushback, it must be OK to do the same to others,” he wrote.Philadelphia Eagles’ DeSean Jackson ahead of an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys, Dec. 22, 2019, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Michael Perez)-A day earlier, in a column in The Atlantic, Jemele Hill wrote that “Regardless of what happens with Jackson, the unfortunate truth is that some Black Americans have shown a certain cultural blindspot about Jews.”She called on DeSean Jackson, who has since talked with a Holocaust survivor, to take up Jewish NFL player Julian Edelman’s offer to visit the US Holocaust Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture together in Washington, DC.Abdul-Jabbar and Hill aren’t the first leading Black sports commentators to weigh in on DeSean Jackson and Stephen Jackson’s comments — Stephen A. Smith and Michael Wilbon voiced their thoughts on the topic last week.
