India has overtaken Russia with the world's third-highest number of novel coronavirus cases at nearly 700,000, according to the latest data, as the outbreak shows no sign of slowing.Health ministry data on Monday showed more than 23,000 new cases reported in the previous 24 hours, down slightly from Sunday's record increase of almost 25,000.There have been almost 20,000 deaths in India since the first case was detected there in January.India is now the world's third worst-affected country, behind only the United States and Brazil. It has seen eight times the number of cases as China, which has a similar-sized population and where the virus originated late last year.Officials said they had reversed a decision to reopen the Taj Mahal, India's most famous tourist attraction, in the city of Agra, 200 kilometres southeast of New Delhi, on Monday, following a spate of new cases in the area. What's happening with COVID-19 in Canada-As of 7 a.m. ET on Monday, Canada had 105,536 confirmed and presumptive coronavirus cases. Provinces and territories listed 69,239 of the cases as recovered or resolved. A CBC News tally of deaths based on provincial reports, regional health information and CBC's reporting stood at 8,729. Ontario's courts will resume in-person proceedings Monday after being shuttered for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of the Attorney General has said courtrooms will reopen gradually, with the goal of having all courtrooms operational by Nov. 1. Courthouses have been closed since March 16, with some operations moving online. The initial plan was to have 149 courtrooms in both the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice open today for trials and preliminary inquiries in 44 locations, but on Saturday, the ministry announced that two of those locations were not yet ready to reopen. In the courthouses that are reopening, there will be Plexiglas barriers in courtrooms, interview rooms, intake offices and at public counters.

Officials investigating new COVID-19 cluster on P.E.I.New COVID-19 cluster in P.E.I.-july 6,20

P.E.I. has its first cluster of COVID-19 since April just as travel opens up within Atlantic Canada. The new cases are a sign that provinces need to keep their guard up as restrictions come down. 2:04-Here's what's happening around the world-The Philippines has reported its biggest spike in coronavirus infections in recent days, raising the possibility its crowded capital may be placed back under a strict lockdown. The Department of Health reported 2,434 cases in recent days, most of them in metropolitan Manila, raising the number of cases nationwide to more than 44,250, including 1,297 deaths. The infections and deaths are among the highest in Southeast Asia.Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano said there's a possibility the capital area may revert to a lockdown if the uptick continues and hospitals get filled again. At least one major Manila hospital, the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Centre, said its COVID-19 ward was running at full capacity and appealed that new patients be taken elsewhere. The leader of Australia's most populous state says her government's decision to close its border with hard-hit Victoria state marks a new phase in the country's coronavirus pandemic.New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian had long been a critic of states that closed their borders to her state when its capital Sydney had Australia's largest numbers of COVID-19 cases. But she had changed her stance on keeping Australia's internal borders open because the situation in Melbourne, capital of Victoria, was unprecedented. The overwhelming majority of new cases detected in Melbourne in recent weeks were from community transmission. Everywhere else in Australia, the vast majority of cases were infected overseas or had been infected by a returned traveller, Berejiklian said.Dr. Christopher Labos says the coronavirus is still circulating even when numbers appear very low and public health measures must still be followed to keep it under control. 8:18"What is occurring in Victoria has not yet occurred anywhere else in Australia," she said. "It's a new part of the pandemic and, as such, it requires a new type of response."Pakistan's Minister of State for Health Zafar Mirza tested positive for the coronavirus, the latest high-profile government minister to contract the virus.Foreign Minister Moahmood Qureshi announced Friday that he too tested positive for the virus.Pakistan has recorded 231,813 infections and 4,762 deaths. Prime Minister Imran Khan has refused to impose strict lockdowns and has eased many restrictions. However, he has ordered people to wear masks and physically distance, though most people, especially the poor and residents in the congested cities, are not able to keep their distance.Paris's Louvre Museum, which houses the Mona Lisa, reopened Monday after a four-month coronavirus lockdown and without its usual huge throngs.Health officials takes a swab sample from a man during door to door screening and testing for COVID-19 in Pakistan. Among the trickle of returning tourists was Zino Vandenbeaghen, who travelled from Belgium to enjoy the unusual space at both the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles.About 70 per cent of the giant museum — 45,000 square metres of space — housing 30,000 of the Louvre's vast trove of works is again accessible to visitors starved of art in lockdown."It's very emotional for all the teams that have prepared this reopening," said Jean-Luc Martinez, the museum director. The bulk of visitors to what was the world's most-visited museum before the pandemic used to come from overseas, led by travellers from the United States. The Louvre is hoping the reopening will attract visitors from closer to home, including the Paris region, but is bracing for a plunge in numbers.
The museum's director says the number of visitors is so restricted that some might find themselves in a rare moment: 'Alone in front of the Mona Lisa.' 0:47-Martinez said the museum was expecting just 7,000 visitors on the reopening day. Before the pandemic, as many as 50,000 people per day toured the Louvre in the busiest summer months. The number of coronavirus cases in Qatar exceeded 100,000 on Monday, with 546 new cases added and five deaths in the past 24 hours. With a population of about 2.7 million people, the energy-rich Gulf state has one of the world's highest per capita number of confirmed cases.Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta announced on Monday a phased reopening of the country from COVID-19 lockdowns, lifting restrictions on travel in and out of the capital Nairobi and allowing air travel to resume.Kenyatta said the country has reached a reasonable level of preparedness for a partial loosening of restrictions, but urged caution and warned against reckless behaviour.Domestic commercial and passenger flights are scheduled to restart on July 15, Kenyatta said, while international travel will resume from Aug. 1A barber tends to a client while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Emergent signs five-year deal backing J&J COVID-19 vaccine-[Reuters- July 6, 2020

(Reuters) - Emergent BioSolutions Inc said on Monday it signed a five-year contract to make the drug substance used in Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, adding to a series of deals likely to put it at the heart of future global vaccine production.Under the deal, starting next year Emergent will provide large-scale manufacturing services to produce the drug substance over five years, with the first two years valued at about $480 million. The news follows a $135 million deal struck by the two companies in April, to use Emergent's manufacturing facilities to speed up the development and production of its vaccine candidate.J&J has partnered with the U.S. government on a $1 billion investment to produce more than 1 billion doses of its vaccine, which is set to enter human testing in the second half of this month. The manufacturing activities will happen at Emergent's Baltimore Bayview facility, the company said. The facility was set up by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services(HHS) to develop and make medical countermeasures, such as vaccines and therapeutics used to fight health emergencies. The facility, designated by the HHS as a Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing, has the capacity to produce tens to hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine yearly, Emergent said.Emergent has also signed similar deals to expand the manufacturing capacity of COVID-19 vaccines under development by AstraZeneca Plc , Novavax Inc and Vaxart Inc .The company also received $628 million from the U.S. government, which is looking to secure manufacturing capacity for a potential COVID-19 vaccine under its "Operation Warp Speed" program.(Reporting by Manojna Maddipatla in Bengaluru; Editing by Patrick Graham and Bernard Orr)

Driver in fatal 2015 West Bank terror ramming sentenced to life-The Times of Israel-july 6,20-As judge reads out decision, victim’s wife faints, family shouts at relatives of Palestinian attacker and is removed from room-By Jacob Magid-Today, 1:31 pm

A military court in the West Bank sentenced a Palestinian truck driver who killed an Israeli father of seven in a 2015 car-ramming attack to life in prison on Monday.Shaban Titi had been convicted in 2016 of premeditated manslaughter for running over 54-year-old Avraham Hasano, a charge equivalent to murder in civilian courts. As the Ofer Military Court judge read out the sentence, Hasano’s family members in the chamber began shouting at Titi’s relatives and had to be removed from the room as the verbal confrontation escalated. Hasano’s wife Ruti briefly passed out amid the commotion.During the reading of the sentence, the terrorist smiled and did not look down [in shame]. The sentence is not sufficient and we hope the state will consider the death penalty for every terrorist who dares to hurt a Jew,” Hasano’s brother Meidad told the Kan public broadcaster later Monday.Titi was arrested by the Shin Bet five months after the attack that killed Avraham Hasano on a West Bank road. The suspect, a resident of the West Bank village of Dahariya, claimed he ran over Hasano by accident, fleeing the scene out of fear.According to the indictment, Titi ran over Hasano, after which he dragged him for 37 meters (121 feet), before driving away and leaving the severely injured Israeli on the road.Images from the scene of the attack showed Hasano emerging from his car brandishing a large wooden club after his vehicle was pelted with rocks by Palestinians near Hebron. He approached the truck, waving the club, and was run over. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.Titi was initially charged with manslaughter, but Hasano’s family reacted angrily to the reduced charge and immediately filed an ultimately successful petition to change the indictment to a murder charge.Titi said he attempted to avoid hitting Hasano but did not have enough time to swerve out of the way. Shortly after the incident, he called his Israeli employer to report that he had run someone over. After the incident, Titi turned himself in to Palestinian police, claiming he had not intended to kill the 54-year-old Israeli father of seven from Kiryat Arba. He had previously been held at the Dahariya police station and then released by the Palestinian Authority, then was arrested by Israeli forces “following extensive intelligence activity,” the Shin Bet said in a statement last month.

Epstein associate Maxwell took pic with Kevin Spacey on Queen Elizabeth’s throne-The Times of Israel-'A breach of protocol that few will want to excuse-Ghislaine Maxwell was recently charged with sex trafficking minors for the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, is a long-time friend of Britain’s Prince Andrew-By TOI staff and Agencies-july 6,20-Today, 9:03 am

An associate of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein who is accused of sex trafficking was photographed sitting on British Queen Elizabeth II’s throne alongside disgraced American actor Kevin Spacey in the early 2000s, The Telegraph reported on Saturday.According to The Telegraph, Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite close to Prince Andrew, sat on the royal seat in the Buckingham Palace throne room during a 2002 tour organized by the prince for former US president Bill Clinton.“The Throne Room picture of Maxwell and Spacey is a breach of protocol that few will want to excuse,” the paper reported-Maxwell was arrested Thursday and faces six counts relating to Epstein’s sex crimes, including conspiracy to entice minors to travel in order to engage in illegal sex acts. The royals are dragged back into the Jeffrey Epstein scandal as his alleged accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell is pictured posing on the British throne with actor Kevin Spacey, who has also faced allegations of sexual misconduct. https://t.co/zEe7DlHkYC pic.twitter.com/xvy8hBAIWM — CNN (@CNN) July 5, 2020-She is also charged with transportation of minors for criminal sexual activity, and perjury for allegedly lying under oath during a 2016 civil suit filed against her by one of Epstein’s alleged victims. Her arrest threw a deeply uncomfortable spotlight on Prince Andrew. The once popular royal has seen his reputation shredded by his friendship with the late billionaire Epstein, who died by suicide in prison last August, to the point where it may never recover.Maxwell’s arrest on Thursday means Andrew — once dubbed Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite son — will face fresh scrutiny, as he did after defending his association with the convicted pedophile.Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts has charged that she was made to have sex with the royal when she was 17. Prince Andrew has denied the allegations.Epstein took his own life in August while awaiting trial on charges he sexually abused girls as young as 14 and young women in New York and Florida in the early 2000s.While not involved in the Epstein scandal, Spacey has also faced allegations of improper sexual behavior, including allegedly making sexual advances on a teenage boy.

With Iran in its sights, Israel launches new spy satellite into orbit-The Times of Israel-'Our satellites let us watch the entire Middle East'-Defense Ministry says Ofek-16, an ‘optoelectronic reconnaissance satellite with advanced capabilities,’ blasted off at 4 a.m., undergoing tests after entering orbitBy Judah Ari Gross-july 6,20-Today, 5:52 am

Israel launched a new spy satellite into orbit from a launchpad in the center of the country early Monday morning, the Defense Ministry said.“The Defense Ministry and Israel Aerospace Industries successfully launched into space the reconnaissance satellite ‘Ofek-16,’ which entered into its orbit,” the ministry said in a statement.Defense Minister Benny Gantz hailed the launch of the Ofek-16 satellite as a “mighty achievement for the defense establishment, the defense industries in general and Israel Aerospace Industries in particular.”Israel is one of a small number of countries in the world that operate reconnaissance satellites, giving it advanced intelligence-gathering capabilities. As of April, this cadre included Iran, which successfully launched a spy satellite into orbit after years of failed attempts.“Our network of satellites lets us watch the entire Middle East — and even a bit more than that,” said Shlomi Sudari, the head of IAI’s space program. The reconnaissance satellite was fired into space at 4 a.m. using a Shavit launch vehicle that took off from a launchpad in the Palmachim air base in central Israel, the ministry said. The Ofek-16 is an “optoelectronic reconnaissance satellite with advanced capabilities,” the ministry said. It is the latest satellite in the Ofek series to be launched into space, following the Ofek-11, which entered orbit in 2016.According to Sudari, the Ofek-16 is the “brother” of the Ofek-11, containing many of the same capabilities, along with a few “light improvements, in terms of precision.” Defense Ministry officials refused to comment on the jump in the name, from Ofek-11 to Ofek-16.“The Ofek-16 is highly advanced, including breakthrough ‘blue and white’ technology that serves our defense interests,” Sudari said, using a term that refers to the colors of the Israeli flag to signify domestically produced capabilities.Though the main function of the new spy satellite will likely be monitoring Iran and developments in its nuclear and missile programs, defense officials denied any symbolism in conducting the launch amid growing reports that Israel was responsible for a number of recent explosions in the Islamic Republic, including one at a uranium enrichment facility and another at a missile production plant.“The timing was planned far in advance,” Sudari said.Sudari said the Ofek-16 would operate on a low-Earth orbit, similar to the other Ofek satellites.“Under the original launch plan, the [Ofek-16] satellite entered orbit around the Earth and began to beam back data,” the Defense Ministry said early on Monday.Israel’s Ofek-16 reconnaissance satellite is seen before it was launched from central Israel on July 6, 2020. (Defense Ministry)-Engineers from the ministry and Israel Aerospace Industries began performing a series of tests to ensure that the satellite was operating correctly. The ministry said these checks would continue “until the satellite enters full operation shortly.”Amnon Hariri, the head of the Defense Ministry’s Space Department, said, beaming, that the launch went off with no hiccups.Once operational, the satellite will be operated by the Israel Defense Forces’ Unit 9900, a visual intelligence detachment that controls all of the nation’s spy satellites.“The State of Israel’s technological and intelligence superiority is the cornerstone of its security,” Defense Minister Gantz wrote on Twitter. “We’ll continue to strengthen and fortify Israel’s strength on every front and every place.”This was the first launch of an Israeli spy satellite into space since the Ofek-11 in September 2016. The Ofek-11 experienced initial technical issues shortly after launch, but engineers on the ground were able to stabilize it and get it working. According to the Defense Ministry, there were no such issues with the Ofek-16.Last year, Israel also put the Amos-17 communications satellite into orbit, using a SpaceX rocket that was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.Israel launched its first satellite, the Ofek-1, into space in 1988, footage of which was released by the Defense Ministry in 2018.It was not until seven years later, in 1995, that Israel launched a reconnaissance satellite into space capable of photographing the Earth.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Israel was behind blast at Iran nuclear site, Mideast intel official tells NYT-The Times of Israel-Officials says powerful bomb was used to damage building involved in centrifuge production at Natanz, denies Israeli connection to other recent fires in the Islamic Republic-By TOI staff and AP-july 6,20-Today, 5:11 am

A fire that damaged a building used for producing centrifuges at Iran’s Natanz nuclear site was sparked by Israel, a Middle Eastern intelligence official told the New York Times on Sunday. The unidentified official said the blast Thursday at the Natanz nuclear complex was caused by a powerful bomb.A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also told the newspaper that an explosive was used, but didn’t specify who was responsible. The Middle Eastern intelligence official said Israel wasn’t linked to several other recent mysterious fires in Iran over the past week. The report came as Iran admitted that Natanz incurred “considerable” damage from the fire last week, as satellite pictures appeared to show widespread devastation at the sensitive facility.A satellite image from Planet Labs Inc. that has been annotated by experts at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at Middlebury Institute of International Studies shows a damaged building after a fire and explosion at Iran’s Natanz nuclear site, on July 3, 2020. (Planet Labs Inc., James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at Middlebury Institute of International Studies via AP)-Iran had sought to downplay the damage from the blaze, though analysts said it had likely destroyed an above-ground lab being used to prepare advanced centrifuges before they were installed underground.“We first learned that, fortunately, there were no casualties as a result of the incident, but financial damages incurred to the site due to incident were considerable,” said Iran’s atomic agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi. He confirmed that the damaged building was a centrifuge assembly center and not an “industrial shed,” as earlier claimed.“More advanced centrifuge machines were intended to be built there,” he said, adding that the damage would “possibly cause a delay in development and production of advanced centrifuge machines in the medium term.”Authorities have pinpointed the source of the fire, but are withholding the information for national security reasons, he said. The building was first constructed in 2013 for the development of advanced centrifuges, though work was halted there in 2015 under the nuclear deal with world powers, he added. When the US withdrew from the nuclear deal, the work there was renewed, Kamalvandi said.He said that the fire had damaged “precision and measuring instruments,” and that the center had not been operating at full capacity due to restrictions imposed by Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Iran began experimenting with advanced centrifuge models in the wake of the US unilaterally withdrawing from the deal two years ago.Satellite images of the Natanz site published Sunday by the London-based Iranian news site Iran International appeared to show that the site had incurred more significant damage from a mysterious blast last week than what Tehran had initially disclosed. The photos showed most of the building flattened with debris scattered around the perimeter, indicating that it had been targeted in an explosion.Experts assess that the damage from the apparent explosion has set back Iran’s nuclear program by a year, according to Israel’s Channel 13 news. The network said Sunday that the lab in Natanz where advanced centrifuges are assembled had been destroyed. In this frame grab from Islamic Republic Iran Broadcasting, IRIB, state-run TV, three versions of domestically-built centrifuges are shown in a live TV program from Natanz, an Iranian uranium enrichment plant, in Iran, June 6, 2018. (IRIB via AP)In 2018, Iran showed off IR-2, IR-4 and IR-6 centrifuges at the site, in what was seen as a warning to Europe to stick to the nuclear deal after the withdrawal from the accord by the US. Pictures have also purported to show IR-8 centrifuges at Natanz, though Iranian officials have also said the site could not yet handle the ultra-advanced centrifuges. The fire was one of a series of mysterious disasters to strike sensitive Iranian sites in recent days, leading to speculation that it may be the result of a sabotage campaign. Also Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would extend the term of Mossad chief Yossi Cohen until June 2021, citing unspecified “security challenges.”The spymaster is famed in the Mossad ranks as an operations man. Under his watch, the Mossad has reportedly grown in personnel and budgets and has focused on espionage operations targeting the Iranian nuclear program. An Israeli TV report Friday night said that Israel was bracing for a possible Iranian retaliation if it determines Jerusalem is behind the Natanz explosion.Defense Minister Benny Gantz played down the speculation earlier Sunday, saying that not everything that happened there could be blamed on Israel. On Saturday, an explosion reportedly damaged a power plant in Ahvaz, Iran, which was later followed by reports of a chlorine gas leak at a petrochemical center in southeast Iran. The previous week a large blast was felt in Tehran, apparently caused by an explosion at the Parchin military complex, which defense analysts believe holds an underground tunnel system and missile production facilities. The Fars news agency, which is close to the country’s ultra-conservatives, initially reported that the Parchin blast was caused by “an industrial gas tank explosion” near a facility belonging to the defense ministry. It cited an “informed source” in saying the site of the incident was not related to the military. However, this was largely disputed by defense analysts as satellite photographs of the Parchin complex emerged showing large amounts of damage at the site.Iran long has denied seeking nuclear weapons, though the IAEA previously said Iran had done work in “support of a possible military dimension to its nuclear program” that largely halted in late 2003.Western concerns over the Iranian atomic program led to sanctions and eventually to Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The US under President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the accord in May 2018, leading to a series of escalating attacks between Iran and the US, and to Tehran abandoning the deal’s production limits.

Iran negotiating 25-year ‘strategic accord’ with China-The Times of Israel-Iranian FM Zarif insists ‘nothing secret’ about prospective deal with Beijing, says details will be published once it’s finalizedBy AFP-july 6,20-Today, 1:45 am

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has been negotiating a 25-year accord with China and the terms will be announced once a deal is struck, the Iranian foreign minister told a stormy session of parliament Sunday.“With confidence and conviction, we are negotiating a 25-year strategic accord with China,” Iran’s top trading partner, Mohammad Javad Zarif said.During the session, Zarif was heckled by lawmakers, largely over his key role in negotiating a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which the US unilaterally abandoned in 2018 as a prelude to reimposing biting sanctions. It was his first address to parliament since a new house started work in late May in the wake of elections that were dominated by conservatives and ultra-conservatives.arif insisted there was “nothing secret” about the prospective China deal. The nation would be informed “when an accord has been concluded,” he said, adding that the intention had already been made public in January 2016 when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Tehran.China is also a key market for Iranian crude exports, which have been severely curtailed by the US sanctions. In this photo from January 23, 2016, released by an official website of the office of the Iranian supreme leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, right, meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tehran, Iran. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)The 2015 nuclear deal had given the Islamic Republic relief from international sanctions in return for limits on its nuclear program, but Iranian conservatives staunchly opposed that multilateral agreement, arguing the US could never be trusted. But Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has come out publicly in support of a strategic bilateral partnership with China. The planned China deal has been a hot topic on Iranian social media since populist ex-president Mahmud Ahmadinejad last month condemned negotiations underway with a foreign country.

Iran claims to have built underground ‘missile cities’ on Gulf coast-The Times of Israel-IRGC Navy commander says Tehran has also established offshore missile facilities that will be a ‘nightmare’ to the country’s enemies-By TOI staff-JULY 6,20-Today, 2:42 am-top commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Sunday that Iran has built underground “missile cities” all along its southern coast, warning they would be a “nightmare” for Tehran’s enemies.Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri, who heads the IRGC Navy, said Iran has also constructed so-called missile cities offshore. He said the sites contain surface-to-air missiles.“Iran has established underground onshore and offshore missile cities all along the coasts of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman that would be a nightmare for Iran’s enemies,” he told the Sobh-e Sadeq weekly, according to Reuters.Iran has used the term “missile city” to refer to underground facilities where weapons are stored to protect them from airstrikes.Tangsiri claimed Iran would soon make an announcement on new long-range missiles and naval vessels, without further elaborating. He also said Iran was monitoring every vessel that passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait, through which some 20 percent of all oil passes.Tangsiri’s comments came on the heels of a recent series of mysterious fires in Iran, including one at the Natanz nuclear site and another at a military complex that houses missile production facilities. An Israeli TV report over the weekend said Israel was bracing for a possible Iranian retaliation if it determines Jerusalem is behind the Natanz explosion.

IDF strikes Hamas targets in response to Gaza rocket fire-The Times of Israel-Israeli military bombs observation post, apparent underground rocket launchers, after 3 projectiles fired into Israel from the Strip-By Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-5 July 2020, 11:20 pm

The Israel Defense Forces bombed a number of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday night after terrorists in the enclave fired three rockets into southern Israel earlier in the evening, the military said.According to a number of Palestinian outlets in the Strip, in several rounds of airstrikes, the Israeli military targeted a Hamas observation post, as well as “agricultural lands,” east of Gaza City.In the past, such Israeli strikes on “agricultural lands” have targeted underground rocket launchers that were buried under fields. The IDF confirmed carrying out the strikes with attack helicopters and fighter jets, saying that among the targets were “underground infrastructure belonging to the Hamas terror group.”The military repeated its general view that Hamas, the de facto ruler of Gaza, was ultimately responsible for “what happens in the Gaza Strip and what comes out of it.”Earlier in the evening, three rockets were fired from the northern Gaza Strip into Israel, amid growing tensions along the border region appeared as the Israeli government considered annexing portions of the West Bank. Two rockets apparently struck an open field at around 7 p.m. in the Sdot Negev region of southern Israel, local officials said, without causing injuries or damage.About an hour later, rockets sirens again rang out in the southern Israeli Sha’ar Hanegev region as another rocket was launched out of the Strip. The rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system, according to the IDF.IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman later said the top brass of the Southern Command would hold a “situational assessment” regarding the attacks to determine how to proceed.“We will not accept rocket fire at the south. A situational assessment will be held in the coming hours,” Zilberman told reporters. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. The IDF spokesman said the military did not yet know which terror organization fired them. The normally restive Gaza border region has seen months of calm since a flare-up of violence in February, amid reported intensive efforts to reach a long-term truce deal between Israel and Hamas. But tensions have risen in recent days, with Gazan terror groups vowing to oppose Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank under the Trump administration’s peace plan rejected by the Palestinians.Late last month, Gaza’s Hamas rulers warned that in the event that Israel goes ahead with applying its sovereignty over settlements and the Jordan Valley as provided for in the US peace plan, it would amount to a “declaration of war” against Palestinians.A day later, on June 27, Palestinians in Gaza fired two rockets at Israel. The rockets fell in open areas and did not cause casualties or damage. One rocket landed in an open area in the Sha’ar Hanegev region, while the second apparently fell within the Strip.Israel retaliated with strikes on Hamas sites, saying it held the terror group responsible for attacks from Gaza.On Wednesday, sources in Hamas claimed the Gaza-based terror group had fired a volley of rockets into the sea as a warning to Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank. However, the IDF said it was unaware of any such launch, and there was no additional confirmation.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s center-right coalition government had set July 1 as the date from which it could begin implementing US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace proposal, annexing territory. But there was no announcement last Wednesday or any day since.

Iran admits fire at Natanz nuclear site set back its centrifuge program-The Times of IsraeL-Experts assess apparent explosion struck serious blow to nuclear program as photos show building flattened; Tehran says it knows what caused fire, but is not saying yet-By TOI staff and AP    5 July 2020, 10:55 pm

(Planet Labs Inc., James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at Middlebury Institute of International Studies via AP)Iran admitted Sunday that its Natanz nuclear facility had incurred “considerable” damage from a mysterious fire last week that ravaged a building at the site, as satellite pictures appeared to show widespread devastation at the sensitive facility.Iran had sought to downplay the damage from the blaze, though analysts said it had likely destroyed an aboveground lab being used to prepare advanced centrifuges before they were installed underground.“We first learned that, fortunately, there were no casualties as a result of the incident, but financial damages incurred to the site due to incident were considerable,” said Iran’s atomic agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi. Iran began experimenting with advanced centrifuge models in the wake of the US unilaterally withdrawing from the deal two years ago.???????? — NEWS: A fire that broke out at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility on Thursday caused significant damage, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said earlier today. Mossad chief’s term extended, amid speculation of covert war with Iran-The Times of Israel-Spymaster Yossi Cohen to remain in position until June 2021, Netanyahu announces, citing unspecified ‘security challenges’By TOI staff-5 July 2020, 10:25 pm

After a week that saw a series of unexplained blasts at Iranian nuclear facilities attributed by overseas analysts to the Israel’s clandestine services, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that he would extend the term of Mossad chief Yossi Cohen until June 2021.Cohen is considered a close adviser and confidant to Netanyahu, who pulled him from the Mossad’s ranks in 2013 to appoint him national security adviser. The head of the Mossad agreed to the prime minister’s request, and in January will begin his sixth year in the post.”Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu’s decision may have violated his coalition agreement with Blue and White leader Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who is supposed to have a veto over senior appointments.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (L) and Mossad chief Yossi Cohen at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, October 15, 2015. 6 injured as settlers and Palestinians clash in northern West Bank-The Times of Israel-Samaria council says Jewish farmers were attacked by mob of 100 stone throwers; Biddya municipality says settlers were trying to take over Palestinian land and shot 2 farmers-By Jacob Magid and Aaron Boxerman-5 July 2020, 5:56 pm

Two Palestinians were shot and wounded during a violent scuffle with settlers in the northern West Bank Sunday afternoon that also put four Israelis in the hospital.wo Palestinians with gunshot wounds were hospitalized in moderate and light condition respectively in the nearby Salfit governorate, the Palestinian Authority Health Ministry said.Four settlers were lightly injured by thrown stones during the melee and taken to Kfar Saba’s Meir Medical Center for treatment. The clash erupted between settler youth and Palestinian farmers working land between the settlement of Maaleh Shomron and the Palestinian town of Biddya, southwest of Nablus, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.Israeli police did not specify who instigated the clash.A spokeswoman for the Samaria Regional Council said Israeli farmers were set upon with stones and clubs by 100 Palestinians. One of the farmers, who was armed, opened fire to scatter the rioters, she said.According to the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency, the fight broke out due to both sides claiming the same piece of farmland, which the report called an attempted “takeover” by settlers.Iyad Abid, a member of the Biddya Emergency Committee, told The Times of Israel that the two injured Palestinians were Biddya residents Mohannad al-Sadiq and Daoud Salameh (Abu Karim).“The settlers say that the land is theirs, and they want to take it by force. But it belongs to private individuals in Biddya,” Abid said.Abid added that the town had held a protest against what he said were attempts by settlers to take it over on Friday.Asked about claims by the Samaria Regional Council spokesperson that there had been 100 Arabs who had attacked Jewish farmers, Abid claimed that the two injured were the only ones present on their land during the alleged confrontation, and that the rest only arrived after the settlers had fled.“They shot and fled,” Abid said, referring to the settlers. The incident came a week after the sides traded arson accusations regarding fires that broke out in nearby Burin and Givat Ronen in the northern West Bank.Israel Fire and Rescue Services said it responded to a report of a large brush fire outside the Givat Ronen outpost, which quickly spread due to the wind and topography of the area. A fire service spokesman said that locals reported having seen Palestinians from neighboring Burin setting fire to the field outside Givat Ronen before fleeing back to their village. As Israeli fire squads worked to put out the blaze, Palestinians from Burin filmed ten masked settlers descending from Givat Ronen, hurling stones at a construction site on the edge of the village, then setting an adjacent field on fire and fleeing back toward their outpost.A spokesman for the Yesh Din rights group, which distributed the footage, said Burin residents had been aware of a fire that had been set an hour earlier near Givat Ronen, but said that since it had been ignited on fields belonging to their village it could not have been started by one of their own inhabitants.

Government okays plan to bolster Diaspora Jewry, but sparse on details-The Times of Israel-Diaspora Affairs Ministry program hailed as ‘paradigm shift’ in times of crisis for many Jewish communities suffering from COVID-19, though little is known about concrete measures-By Raphael Ahren-5 July 2020, 5:38 pm

The government on Sunday approved what it said was the first-ever comprehensive plan geared toward securing the future of Diaspora Jewry, though few details about concrete measures to assist struggling communities outside of Israel were released. The outline of the program was presented to the cabinet by Diaspora Affairs Minister Omer Yankelevitch, based on the findings of an advisory committee headed by Maxine Fassberg, a South Africa-born former senior Intel executive, and Moscow native Eugene Kandel, a Hebrew University professor and former senior economic adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The committee started its work in early 2019, and was tasked with exploring ways to strengthen Israel-Diaspora ties and to adapt the Zionist project “to changing realities.”Israel and world Jewry have appeared to move apart over the last several years, as a more progressive Diaspora has run into conflict with Israeli policies shaped by the country’s Orthodox-dominated religious leadership. Divisions have formed over shelved plans to open up the Western Wall to more pluralistic denominations, disputes over Jewish conversions and the Israeli government’s right-wing policies, leading to fears of a growing disconnect between liberal Diaspora Jews and Israel.Kandel indicated that a main goal of the project would be bolstering the Jewish identity of those in Diaspora communities and battling assimilation. In order to alter the trends, there is an immediate need for a long-term strategic process backed by resources from the Israeli government, in partnership with all world Jewish communities,” Kandel said. “Only thus do we stand a chance of preventing the collapse of many Jewish communities within a single generation, and the severance of ties between many young Jews and their People.”Today, about 45 percent of the world’s 15 million Jews live in the State of Israel, which must assume increasing responsibility for the continued growth and success of the Jewish people, the government decision stated.“The government considers the State of Israel’s commitment to strengthen the Jewish people of a mission of the utmost importance, viewing it as a foundation of the State of Israel and an integral part of the Zionist vision.”From left to right: Maxine Fassberg, Diaspora Affairs Minister Omer Yankelevitch, Eugene Kandel (Courtesy)A press release issued by Yankelevitch stressed the need to tighten relations between Israel and the Jewish world but failed to describe what concrete actions would be taken. The program to be created based on the committee’s recommendation “must focus on strengthening ties with Jewish communities worldwide based on an approach grounded in partnership, investing in formal and informal Jewish education, and reinforcing Jewish identity and the sense of connection to Israel through multiple channels,” it read. While the effort appeared to be the first time the government had approved a strategic plan of this type, different Israeli bodies have in the past been tasked with the same goals of strengthening Jewish communities and boosting ties between Israel and the Diaspora.“The framework that was approved today will enable us to formulate a sustainable, long-term strategic program which is not dependent on any particular government,” Yankelevitch said.Happy to share that the ???????? Govt just approved the strategic framework I proposed for ensuring the future of the world Jewish community. This framework expresses our deep commitment to the entire People & will serve as a basis for global projects in partnership with communitomer yankelevitch (@omeryankelevitc) July 5, 2020-he outline approved Sunday is officially called a “Comprehensive Strategic Framework for Ensuring the Continued Existence and Unity of the World Jewish Community.” It lists “tak[ing] a whole-of-government approach aimed at enhancing synergy among all the bodies involved in Diaspora affairs, the creation of an integrated global platform, and ensuring an appropriate allocation of resources.”“We stand at a critical historical juncture with regards to the relationship between the State of Israel and the world Jewish community. Now is the time to decide whether we view ourselves only through the prism of the seven million Jews living in the State of Israel, or whether we see ourselves as one Jewish people, comprising fifteen million Jews around the world,” Yankelevitch said in a statement. The flags of countries that are home to Jewish communities hard hit by COVID-19 projected on to the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem in a show of support sponsored by the Diaspora Affairs Ministry on May 12, 2020. (Igor Parvarov via JTA)-The coronavirus pandemic “sharpened the question of Israel’s commitment to Diaspora Jewry,” Yankelevitch went on, but did not outline how exactly Jerusalem intends to provide assistance to communities hard-hit by COVID-19.A statement sent to reporters later on Sunday broadly outlined six areas in which the government intends to increase its activity: Jewish education, activities in Israel, Tikkun Olam (helping the world become a better place), innovation and technology, assessments and measurements, and common destiny. The initiatives planned under the new outline will be implemented “in full cooperation” with the Foreign Ministry, the Immigration Absorption Ministry, the Jewish Agency and other national institutions, as well as “philanthropists and Jewish communities around the world,” her office said.Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog praised Yankelovitch for bringing the plan for government approval, predicting that it would lead to a “paradigm shift in Israel-Diaspora relations, and which stretches out a hand [of support] to the Jewish people in times of a difficult crisis.”

India, China both say border disengagement process under way-[The Canadian Press]-Ashok Sharma-July 6, 2020

NEW DELHI — India and China said Monday that they had made progress disengaging frontline troops from a months-long standoff along a disputed part of their border where a brawl in June left 20 Indian soldiers dead.Special representatives on the border issue, India’s national security advisor Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, spoke by phone on Sunday about the issues along the frontier known as the Line of Actual Control, according to India’s Foreign Ministry. The representatives agreed that “maintenance of peace and tranquility in the India-China border areas was essential for the further development of our bilateral relations” and to “complete the ongoing disengagement process along the LAC expeditiously,” the ministry said Monday in a statement. An Indian Defence Ministry official told The Associated Press that Chinese troops were observed “removing tents and structures” near the Galwan Valley along the disputed border. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.Asked about a Chinese withdrawal, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said only that the two sides “made positive progress in disengaging frontline troops and easing the border situation with effective measures” in a third round of military talks June 30.Both sides blamed each other for the June 15 clash in the remote river valley in the Karakoram mountains of Ladakh where India is building a strategic road connecting the region to an airstrip close to China.Soldiers fought in hand-to-hand combat with fists and clubs, but not with firearms, deferring to an agreement not to use them. India said 20 of its soldiers were killed, as were Chinese soldiers. Chinese officials have not confirmed any casualties.Chris Biggers, senior analyst at the geospatial intelligence company HawkEye 360, has said a review of satellite images showed China was moving construction equipment, soldiers and military hardware toward the Line of Actual Control before and after the clash.China and India fought a 1962 war over their disputed border, an area that covers nearly 3,500 kilometres (2,175 miles). That fighting ended in an uneasy truce and the creation of the Line of Actual Control, which stretches from Ladakh in the north to the Indian state of Sikkim in the northeast. The two countries have been trying to settle their border dispute since the early 1990s, without success.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unannounced visit Friday to a military base in Ladakh, telling troops that the “days of expansionism are over.”Expansionism creates danger for world peace. This is an era of development. Expansionist forces have either lost or forced to turn back,” he said in an apparent reference to China.___Associated Press writers in Beijing contributed to this report.Ashok Sharma, The Associated Press

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.

DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.

13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Annexation not practical at the moment, says outgoing Defense Ministry chief-The Times of Israel-Udi Adam says extension of sovereignty to West Bank areas requires regional and international cooperation-By TOI staff-5 July 2020, 1:33 pm

Outgoing Defense Ministry director-general Udi Adam said Sunday that Israel cannot unilaterally annex large areas of the West Bank, and that the process requires regional cooperation, including with the Palestinians.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government had set July 1 as the date it could begin implementing the part of the Trump administration peace proposal that allows Israel to extend sovereignty to its settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan valley, together about 30 percent of the West Bank. But as last Wednesday’s target date came and went without any action, Netanyahu’s office said he would continue to discuss the possible annexation with the US administration.Adam, who announced his retirement in May after working under five ministers during his four years in office, told Army Radio that “there is no practical way to do a sweeping annexation at the moment.”Adam said that annexation needs to be done in cooperation with other countries in the region, the US, the Europeans, and “of course the Palestinians.”Adam admitted that senior defense officials, including himself, don’t know much more about the planned annexation than has already been published in the media but said that should not be taken as an indication that there is not a plan in the works.Adam was replaced at the ministry by former air force commander Amir Eshel. The peace plan, unveiled by US President Donald Trump in January, calls for any annexations to come as part of a larger peace package, including negotiations on the creation of a demilitarized Palestinian state across the roughly 70% of the West Bank that won’t be annexed by Israel, with a link to Gaza — a prospect that is untenable to Palestinians and many on the Israeli right. The Trump plan also calls for talks with the Palestinians and buy-in from Gulf Arab states that would theoretically be tasked with providing massive funds for the nascent Palestinian state’s economy. But the US administration has sounded empathetic at times to Netanyahu’s declared plans for unilateral annexation, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying repeatedly that the decision is Israel’s to make.Trump’s plan has been entirely rejected by the Palestinians. The US aside, the international community has voiced near-unanimous opposition against unilateral moves by Israel.Agencies contributed to this report.

Constitutional changes are the "right thing" for Russia - Putin-[Reuters]-July 5, 2020

MOSCOW, July 5 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday constitutional amendments approved in a nationwide vote created the conditions for Russia's "progressive development" for decades to come. One of the changes approved in the week-long vote that ended on July 1 makes it possible for Putin to seek two more terms as president and, if re-elected, to stay in power until 2036.Other changes grant former presidents immunity from prosecution, enshrine a reference in the constitution to God, offer pensions protection and define marriage as a union of a man and a woman.Opponents said the vote was illegal and illegitimate, and an independent monitoring group said the vote was deeply flawed. But Russian news agencies quoted Putin as saying: "I am absolutely convinced that we are doing the right thing in adopting amendments to the current constitution.""They will strengthen our nationhood and create conditions for the progressive development of our country for decades to come," he said. The Kremlin has hailed the overwhelming vote in favour of the amendments as a triumph for Putin, who said on Friday that Russian society had shown unity by voting to back the reforms.(Reporting by Maxim Rodionov, Editing by Timothy Heritage)

Russian Orthodox Church defrocks coronavirus-denying monk-[Associated Press]-VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV-July 3, 2020

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Orthodox Church on Friday defrocked a coronavirus-denying monk who has defied Kremlin lockdown orders and taken control of a monastery.A church panel in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg ruled to defrock 65-year-old Father Sergiy, who has attracted nationwide attention by urging believers to disobey church leadership and ignore church closures during the pandemic. The monk didn't show up at the session and dismissed the verdict, urging his backers to come to defend the Sredneuralsk women's monastery where he has holed up since last month. In Friday's video, Father Sergiy denounced President Vladimir Putin as a “traitor to the Motherland” serving a Satanic “world government” and dismissed Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill and other top clerics as “heretics” and “enemies of God and Holy Mother of God” who must be “thrown out.”The monk called for an all-Russia assembly to put Putin, Patriarch Kirill and his entourage on trial to prevent them from plunging the country into a civil war.“We can't allow that wolf pack to mangle Russia and the neighboring nations,” he said. The church banned the monk from ministry in May, but he has continued preaching and last month took charge of the monastery outside Yekaterinburg that he had founded years ago. Scores of volunteers, including battle-hardened veterans of the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine, helped enforce his rules, while the prioress and several nuns have left. The police visited the monastery last month a day after Father Sergiy took over, but found no violations of public order. Facing stiff resistance by his supporters, church officials have appeared indecisive, lacking the means to enforce their ruling and evict the rebellious monk by force.Father Sergiy, who was born as Nikolai Romanov, served as a police officer during Soviet times, then left the ranks and was sentenced to 13 years in prison on charges of robbery and assault. After his release, he joined a church school and later became a monk. The charismatic monk quickly became widely known for his enthusiastic efforts to open new churches and monasteries in the Urals. In his fiery sermons, he denounced alleged plots of the “world government” and glorified Russia’s last czar, Nicholas II, who was killed by the Bolsheviks along with his entire family in Yekaterinburg in 1918.Father Sergiy has been the most visible and outspoken of a few ultra-conservative Russian Orthodox clerics who have challenged the church leadership. The top church hierarchy has avoided conflict with the monk until he openly defied the Kremlin and the Moscow Patriarchy during the coronavirus pandemic. As contagion engulfed Russia, Father Sergiy has declared the coronavirus non-existent and denounced electronic passes introduced in Moscow and some other regions to stem the outbreak as “Satan’s electronic camp.” The monk has described the vaccines being developed against COVID-19 as part of a global plot to control the masses via chips. He also urged believers to disobey the closure of churches during the nationwide lockdown. Orthodox churches across Russia were closed to parishioners on April 13 amid a quick rise in COVID-19 cases and were allowed to reopen in early June as authorities eased restrictions.Speaking in a video from his monastic cell where icons and images of Orthodox Church hierarchs of the past adorn the wall alongside pictures of Russia’s last Czar and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, Father Sergiy warned church officials that they will need to seize the monastery by force to get him out.“I'm calling on all Orthodox believers to come to defend the monastery," he said in his latest video. “I will not leave the monastery.”

World-It Would Cost Trillions: The Day North Korea Collapses-[The National Interest]-Daniel Runde-July 3, 2020

The prospect of a peaceful Korean Unification, however remote it seems, would be a historical event worth planning for. While preparing for the worst, we should hope for the best. Hoping for the best means there is a scenario where North Korea’s collapse and regime change occur miraculously, opening doors to South Korea and the West to take over North Korea in what one hopes would be a peaceful absorption. As unlikely as this sounds, it is important to remember that it is not without historical precedent. In November 1989, West and East Berliners flocked to what was one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world and tore down parts of the Berlin Wall that had divided Germany for twenty-eight years. With U.S.-led assistance, Germany became united through the incorporation of East German federal states to West Germany, and it embarked on a path to becoming one of the richest, most free, and most prosperous countries worldwide. The fall of the Berlin Wall was an event that no one saw coming. In this unlikely scenario, South Korea, Japan, and the West would have to respond diligently and rapidly. Therefore, they need to start making plans concerning the cost of rebuilding North Korea if its regime collapses and South Korea steps in to join the two territories of the Korean Peninsula into a unitary state just as West Germany did. It goes without saying that the largest share of the burden in rebuilding efforts would fall on South Korea. The Asian Development Bank and the World Bank would also be on the hook for such an enormous and historic task. Is South Korea ready for this?Estimates on how much reunification would cost South Korea range from 3 percent to 12 percent of its annual GDP over several decades. In 2015, the South Korean National Assembly estimated the unification cost between 2016 to 2060 to be $9.2 trillion—almost seven times South Korea’s annual GDP. South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, the main government body responsible for inter-Korean relations, received a total of $1 billion in its 2020 budget—a 10 percent increase from the previous year. Amongst infrastructure projects, the budget ramp-up focuses on boosting economic cooperation in efforts to achieve a ‘peace economy’ between the countries. The budget, however, falls short of the suggested estimated costs. Rebuilding North Korea’s transportation and energy sectors alone would require $63.1 billion.Using the reunification of Germany as a proxy, the Eastern part to this day receives cash injections. The overall cost of German Unification amounts to a total of $2.25 trillion. The largest portion (65 percent) went to social benefits, whereas other heavy investments were made in infrastructure and in providing ‘welcome money’ to each East German. Despite the long-term economic adjustments, German unification is considered a success story as it allowed 16 million people to step into a country with higher standards of living, although differences between the West and the East still linger decades after the reunification. The former East falls behind the former West on important economic measures: employment, earnings, GDP per capita, and productivity. The German experience demonstrates that reunification has a costly price tag and a longer time horizon. Differences between the Koreas are striking. In 2016, North Korea had a GDP per capita of $1,500 and South Korea had $27,608 in the same year. North Korea is one of the poorest countries in the world, whereas South Korea is the twelfth largest economy globally.Famine, undernutrition, and lack of access to basic services are widespread problems in the North. Out of a population of 25 million, 41 percent are undernourished and 70 percent suffer from food insecurity. Health services are ill-equipped to respond to people’s basic health needs. Life expectancy in North Korea is sixty-eight years for males and seventy-six for females, whereas in the South it is eighty years for males and eighty-six for females. There is great uncertainty about what Korean unification would look like, but one study by colleagues at CSIS looked at the economics of unification and concluded that it may not be as cumbersome as is typically imagined. In the short-run, unification would slow South Korea’s growth and the cost of unification would be steep. In the long-run, benefits would exceed costs and both sides would gain from economic integration, human capital exchange, and poverty reduction. While the two Koreas differ extensively economically, politically, and socially from the two Germanies of 1989, it is important that the West takes into account that reunification efforts will easily require significant economic resources over time: rebuilding North Korea will be a project that will last more than thirty years.Daniel F. Government weighs formation of committee to probe Ethiopian immigration delays-The Times of Israel-Initiative pushed for by deputy minister Yevarkan as some 8,000 Ethiopians, separated from their families for over 20 years, wait in Ethiopia for Israel to allow them to immigrate-By TOI staff-july 3,20-Today, 1:29 pm

The government will establish an investigative committee to examine Ethiopian immigration, the Kan public broadcaster reported Friday.According to the report, Deputy Public Security Minister Desta “Gadi” Yevarkan, himself an Ethiopian Jew, pushed for the establishment of the committee to decide who can emigrate to Israel and to take a look at immigration policy over the past decades.About 8,000 Ethiopians remain waiting in Ethiopia for the Israeli government to allow them to immigrate. Many have been separated from their families in Israel for more than 20 years. Most Ethiopian Jews in Israel are part of the Beta Israel community while many of those remaining belong to a group known pejoratively as the Falashmura, who had been pressured to convert to Christianity in the late 19th century.Knesset member Gadi Yevarkan speaks during a special plenary session to discuss the country’s failure to properly absorb Ethiopian Jews, at the Knesset on July 15, 2019 (Noam Rivkin Fentonl/Flash90)-Some had come to Israel during the 1980s. But many others who had left their villages to emigrate to Israel in the 1990s became stranded in either Gondar or Addis Ababa as the Israeli government tightened its immigration criteria. Many of them live in impoverished conditions. The Kan report did not specify whether the committee would also examine the problems of absorption and racism faced by the community.More than 144,000 Jews of Ethiopian descent live in Israel, and community activists have long complained of institutional racism and violence at the hands of law enforcement. In 2013, the Jewish Agency declared the end of Ethiopian aliyah, prompting protests by Ethiopian lawmakers and community members in Israel. In 2015 it seemed like the problem was finally solved when Ethiopian-Israeli Knesset Member Avraham Negusie pressured the Netanyahu-led government into passing Resolution 716, which called for the immediate absorption of the remaining Ethiopian Jews. But several months later, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reneged on his promise, claiming that the government did not have sufficient funds to implement the resolution.Ethiopian Jews make matzah by hand in the synagogue in Gondar, Ethiopia on March 21, 2018. (courtesy)-In the years since, a lack of funding has not prevented tens of thousands of immigrants from other countries to come to Israel, while only a trickle of Ethiopians have been let in.In 2017 alone, close to 17,000 Jews were admitted from the former Soviet Union, while only 1,300 Ethiopians were allowed to immigrate.“We know aliyah for Jews that are descendants in other countries happened so swiftly that sometimes even their dogs were also included as they moved to Israel. Are we less important than these dogs?” Meles Sidisto, the community head of Ethiopia’s Jews in Addis Ababa, asked then-justice minister Ayelet Shaked during a meeting in a synagogue in Addis Ababa in 2018.“I don’t believe the Israeli government has a financial problem to immigrate the remaining Ethiopian Jews back to Israel,” Neggousa Zemene Alemu, head coordinator of the Ethiopian Jews in the Ethiopian cities of Addis Ababa and Gondar, said later that year. “I rather think it is a political move or racism.”His comments came after the government decided in October 2018 that just 1,000 Ethiopian Jews would be permitted to move to Israel, which leaders of Ethiopia’s Jewish community said would leave many families divided. In this photo from the Jewish Agency, Immigration Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata (left) and Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog (center) greet 119 new immigrants from Ethiopia at Ben Gurion Airport, May 21, 2020. (Shlomi Amsalem)-Last February, immigration was finally resumed with the arrival of a group of 82 Ethiopian immigrants. In May, a plane carrying 119 immigrants from Ethiopia landed in Israel and was greeted by Immigration Absorption Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata, the first female Ethiopian-born minister in Israel’s history.Between 1979 and 1990, Israel organized several transports of Ethiopian Jews to Israel via Sudan. Hundreds, and by some estimates, thousands of people died on the trip from Ethiopia to the Sudanese camps from where they left to Israel.

Dutch parliament backs fighting anti-Semitism, but not funding Jewish security-The Times of Israel-Lawmakers in Netherlands support appointing national coordinator, creating special police units for anti-Jewish crime, but oppose financing protection for community institutions-By Cnaan Liphshiz-july 3,20-Today, 6:57 am

JTA — The Dutch parliament passed a number of motions earlier this week that speak of the need to fight anti-Semitism in the country. A draft motion calling for the government to pay for security around synagogues failed to pass, however. The motions were voted on in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the parliament, in the framework of a two-day session of the house’s Justice and Security Commission. The rejected motion stated that the Jewish community in the Netherlands “often lacks the means to adequately protect their infrastructure, events and synagogue services” and called on the government to supply the finances for this purpose. The motion, filed by Geert Wilders and Gidi Markuszower of the anti-Islam Freedom Party, received 28 votes in the 150-member Tweede Kamer, with the ruling VVD party, Dutch Labour, the Socialist Party, and the D66 and Green Left progressive parties voting against it.Institutions from the Dutch-Jewish community, which has some 40,000 people, spend over $1.2 million annually on security, according to community leaders.Motions that did pass included a non-binding call on the government to appoint a national coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism and the creation of special police units to deal with anti-Semitic crimes.

UN agency: North Europe radiation likely linked to reactor-[Associated Press]-July 3, 2020

BERLIN (AP) — The U.N. nuclear agency said Friday that slightly elevated levels of radioactivity detected in northern Europe likely were related to a nuclear reactor that was either operating or undergoing maintenance, but it's still unclear where it is located.Estonia, Finland and Sweden last week measured higher-than-usual levels of ruthenium and caesium isotopes and detected some other artificial radionuclides. They said nothing on their territory had happened to explain their presence, as did more than 40 other countries that volunteered information to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA said the higher level of isotopes “is likely related to a nuclear reactor that is either operating or undergoing maintenance, when very low radioactive releases can occur.” It added in a statement that “the geographical origin of the release has not yet been determined.”The Vienna-based U.N. agency said it “ruled out that the release was related to the improper handling of a radioactive source.”“It was also unlikely to be linked to a nuclear fuel processing plant, a spent fuel pool or to the use of radiation in industry or medicine,” it said. The agency stressed anew that the concentrations of the particles in the air were very low and posed no risk to human health or the environment.he Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said a week ago that the isotopes may be from a source in Russia and “may indicate damage to a fuel element in a nuclear power plant.” Russia’s state nuclear power operator, however, said the two nuclear power plants in northwestern Russia haven’t reported any problems.Russia was among the countries that reported back to the IAEA after it contacted nuclear authorities across Europe to request information.

World-Iran will not disclose cause of mysterious nuclear site fire-[Associated Press]-JON GAMBRELL-July 3, 2020-This photo released Thursday, July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. A fire burned the building above Iran's underground Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, though officials say it did not affect its centrifuge operation or cause any release of radiation. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran sought to downplay the fire Thursday, calling it an "incident" that only affected an "industrial shed." (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An online video and messages purportedly claiming responsibility for a fire that analysts say damaged a centrifuge assembly plant at Iran's underground Natanz nuclear site deepened the mystery Friday around the incident — even as Tehran insisted it knew the cause but would not make it public due to “security reasons.”The multiple, different claims by a self-described group called the “Cheetahs of the Homeland” included language used by several exiled Iranian opposition organizations. They also focused almost entirely on Iran's nuclear program, viewed by Israel as a danger to its very existence. The disparate messages, as well as the fact that Iran experts have never heard of the group before, raised questions about whether Natanz again had faced sabotage by a foreign nation as it had during the Stuxnet computer virus outbreak believed to have been engineered by the U.S. and Israel. Tehran's reaction so far shows Iranian officials are increasingly taking the possibility seriously.“If it is proven that our country has been attacked by cyberattacks, we will respond,” warned Gen. Gholam Reza Jalali, the head of Iran’s military unit in charge of combating sabotage, according to a report late Thursday by the Mizan news agency.Iranian officials have sought to downplay the fire, which erupted early on Thursday, calling it only an “incident” that affected an “industrial shed.” However, a released photo and video of the site broadcast by Iranian state television showed a two-story brick building with scorch marks and its roof apparently destroyed. Debris on the ground and a door that looked blown off its hinges suggested an explosion accompanied the blaze. Two U.S.-based analysts who spoke to The Associated Press, relying on released pictures and satellite images, identified the affected building as Natanz's new Iran Centrifuge Assembly Center.Iranian nuclear officials did not respond to a request for comment from the AP on the analysts' findings. However, the semiofficial Tasnim news agency quoted the spokesman of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council as saying authorities know the cause of the fire.“Due to some security considerations, the cause and manner of the accident will be announced at the appropriate time,” Keyvan Khosravi reportedly said on Friday, without elaborating. The International Atomic Energy Agency said none of its inspectors were at Natanz at the time of the fire and “that the location where the incident occurred does not contain nuclear materials.”Before news of the fire became public Thursday, the BBC's Persian service says its journalists received emails from the self-proclaimed “Cheetahs of the Homeland” claiming an attack at Natanz.A video claimed the group included “soldiers from the heart of regime’s security organizations” who wanted to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Iran long has maintained its atomic program is for peaceful purposes. However, the IAEA has said that Iran “carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device” in a “structured program” through the end of 2003.The video and one written statement also referred to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “zahhak,” a monster in Persian folklore. But the tone across the messages clashed, with one using terminology often associated with Iran's Mujahedeen-e-Khalq exile group, or MEK, and the video seemingly showing Iran's Shiite theocracy as worse than the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The video also included parts of the nationalist song “Ey Iran,” which reformists and opposition groups both sing. The MEK group said it was not responsible for the fire. Its statement described the blaze as a “reaction to the nuclear project of the religious fascism ruling Iran, which has afflicted the Iranian people (with) only poverty, repression, terrorism and war.”Supporters of the shah's exiled son, Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, did not respond to a request for comment. The AP received no response to an email sent to one address associated with the “Cheetahs of the Homeland” statements. The purported group's name, “the Cheetahs of the Homeland,” also struck some as odd, given that “cheetahs” is a nickname of Iran's national football club. Ronen Bergman, an Israeli journalist who works with The New York Times and published a book on the Mossad titled “Rise and Kill First,” questioned why an Iranian opposition group would name itself that.“It’s highly unlikely that a serious opposition movement would use such a name, which is probably exactly what the people who came up with it, were aiming people to think,” Bergman wrote Friday on Twitter in English, without elaborating. He also tweeted a similar message in Hebrew.Suspicion over the incident immediately fell on Israel, including in a commentary published by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency Thursday.Meir Javedanfar, an Iran lecturer at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel, who viewed the “Cheetahs of the Homeland” video, said any domestic group that managed to penetrate Iran’s heavily guarded nuclear facilities would be unlikely to risk being captured by distributing such a video. He said “it’s difficult to know” if Israel’s Mossad or another foreign intelligence agency produced the video.“It could be a foreign intelligence agency, in order to sow discord in Iran ... or maybe it’s a false flag by the Iranian regime in order to crack down,” Javedanfar said. The video did, however, call it the Kashan nuclear site, rather than Natanz. Kashan is a nearby city once home to a large, historic Jewish community. Iranians uniformly call the nuclear site Natanz.Destroying a centrifuge assembly facility could greatly impact Iran's ability to more-quickly enrich greater amounts of uranium, which would be a goal for either Israel or the U.S.Iran had begun experimenting with advanced centrifuge models in the wake of the U.S. unilaterally withdrawing two years ago from Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. However, it took years for Iran to perfect its first-generation IR-1 centrifuge off designs it purchased from Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan's black market network. It's unclear if Iran has another similar-size assembly facility. The fact that the Natanz fire also comes less than a week after an explosion in an area east of Tehran that analysts believe hides an underground tunnel system and missile production sites also raises suspicions. The Texas-based private intelligence firm Stratfor said either incident could "have been the result of a domestic group acting with or without foreign support, or the result of a U.S. or Israeli cyber attack.”“If there is a campaign by the United States, Israel and/or local groups in Iran underway, then Iran is likely to eventually respond in kind, potentially against Western targets in the Persian Gulf,” Stratfor warned.___Associated Press writers Joseph Krauss in Jerusalem and Frank Jordans in Berlin contributed to this report.

Report: Israeli cyberattack caused Iran nuclear site fire, F35s hit missile base-The Times of Israel-Kuwaiti newspaper cites unnamed senior source as saying Jerusalem behind recent incidents in Iran, following an alleged attempt by Tehran to hack Israel’s water infrastructureBy Judah Ari Gross-july 3,20-Today, 2:08 pm

Israel was responsible for two blasts at Iranian facilities — one related to uranium enrichment, the other for missile production — over the past week, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported Friday. The Al-Jareeda daily cited an unnamed senior source as saying that an Israeli cyberattack caused a fire and explosion at the largely underground Natanz nuclear enrichment facility in the predawn hours of Thursday morning.According to the source, this was expected to set back Iran’s nuclear enrichment program by approximately two months. The newspaper also reported that last Friday Israeli F-35 stealth fighter jets bombed a site located in the area of Parchin, which is believed to house a missile production complex — an area of particular concern for the Jewish state, in light of the large number and increasing sophistication of missiles and rockets in the arsenals of Iranian proxies, notably Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Fighter jets from the IAF’s second F-35 squadron, the Lions of the South, fly over southern Israel (IDF spokesperson)-Neither of these claims were confirmed by Israeli officials, who have been mum on the reportsThe reported Israeli strikes followed an alleged Iranian attempt to hack into Israel’s water infrastructure in April, an effort that was thwarted by Israeli cyber defenses, but if successful could have introduced dangerous levels of chlorine into the Israeli water supply and otherwise seriously interrupted the flow of water throughout the country.Ultimately, the alleged Iranian cyberattack caused minimal issues, according to Israeli officials. The alleged Israeli attacks also came amid an ongoing campaign of so-called maximum pressure by the United States in the form of crushing sanctions on Iran and Iranian officials.Early Thursday morning, a fire and then an explosion were reported at an above-ground building in the Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, which US-based analysts said was likely a new centrifuge production plant. Natanz, located some 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Tehran, includes underground facilities buried under some 7.6 meters (25 feet) of concrete, which offers protection from airstrikes.Photographs of the site showed significant damage to one above-ground building, which was covered in scorch marks and had its roof apparently destroyed. The BBC’s Persian service said it received an email from a group identifying itself as the “Cheetahs of the Homeland” claiming responsibility for the attack. The email was received prior to the announcement of the Natanz fire. This photo released on July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)-The group, which claimed to be dissident members of Iran’s security forces, had never been heard of before by Iran experts and the claim could not be immediately authenticated by The Associated Press. The site of the fire corresponds to a newly opened centrifuge production facility, said Fabian Hinz, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. He said he relied on satellite images and a state TV program on the facility to locate the building, which sits in Natanz’s northwest corner.A fire has burned a building above Iran’s underground Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, though officials say it did not affect its centrifuge operation or cause any release of radiation. (AP graphic)-David Albright of the Institute for Science and International Security similarly said the fire struck the production facility. His institute previously wrote a report on the new plant, identifying it from satellite pictures while it was under construction and later built.Iranian nuclear officials did not respond to a request for comment about the analysts’ comments. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran sought to downplay the fire, calling it an “incident” that only affected an under-construction “industrial shed,” spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said. However, both Kamalvandi and Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi rushed after the fire to Natanz, which has been targeted in sabotage campaigns in the past.Last Friday, a large blast was felt in Tehran, apparently caused by an explosion at the Parchin military complex, which defense analysts believe hold an underground tunnel system and missile production facilities.According to the al-Jareeda report on Friday, that explosion was caused by missiles dropped by a number of Israeli F-35 stealth fighter jets. The newspaper reported that the aircraft took off from southern Israel and carried out the bombing run without the need to refuel. This Friday, June 26, 2020, photo combo from the European Commission’s Sentinel-2 satellite shows the site of an explosion, before, left, and after, right, that rattled Iran’s capital. Analysts say the blast came from an area in Tehran’s eastern mountains that hides an underground tunnel system and missile production sites. The explosion appears to have charred hundreds of meters of scrubland. (European Commission via AP)The Fars news agency, which is close to the country’s ultra-conservatives, initially reported that the blast was caused by “an industrial gas tank explosion” near a facility belonging to the defense ministry. It cited an “informed source” and said the site of the incident was not related to the military. However, this was largely disregarded by defense analysts as satellite photographs of the Parchin military complex emerged showing large amounts of damage at the site.Later, Iranian Defense Ministry spokesman Davood Abdi blamed the blast on a leaking gas that he did not identify and said no one was killed in the explosion.Satellite photos of the area, some 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) east of downtown Tehran, showed hundreds of meters (yards) of charred scrubland not seen in images of the area taken in the weeks ahead of the incident. The building near the char marks resembled the facility seen in the state TV footage. The gas storage area sits near what analysts describe as Iran’s Khojir missile facility. The explosion appears to have struck a facility for the Shahid Bakeri Industrial Group, which makes solid-propellant rockets, said Fabian Hinz. The Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies identified Khojir as the “site of numerous tunnels, some suspected of use for arms assembly.” Large industrial buildings at the site visible from satellite photographs also suggest missile assembly being conducted there.Iranian officials themselves also identified the site as being home to a military base where the International Atomic Energy Agency previously said it suspects Iran conducted tests of explosive triggers that could be used in nuclear weapons. Iran long has denied seeking nuclear weapons, though the IAEA previously said Iran had done work in “support of a possible military dimension to its nuclear program” that largely halted in late 2003.Western concerns over the Iranian atomic program led to sanctions and eventually to Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The US under President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the accord in May 2018, leading to a series of escalating attacks between Iran and the US, and to Tehran abandoning the deal’s production limits. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ahmad Erekat’s family petitions High Court for body of alleged checkpoint rammer-The Times of Israel-Father says ‘political considerations’ led to Israeli reversal on returning remains of man shot after suspected attack, days after Gantz said to back keeping terrorists’ bodies-By Aaron Boxerman-july 3,20-Today, 4:29 pm

The father of Ahmad Erekat, who was shot dead by Border Police after allegedly carrying out a ramming attack outside of Jerusalem last month, has appealed to the High Court of Justice to compel Israel to release his son’s body for burial after withholding it since the incident.Erekat, a 27-year-old resident of Abu Dis, approached the “Container” checkpoint on June 23 before abruptly accelerating and turning toward a group of police, lightly wounding an officer.Video footage from the scene showed that as Erekat got out of the vehicle, he appeared to begin running away from the police officers, who shot him.Erekat’s family has denied he intended to commit a ramming attack, and some family members suggested it was an accident that happened while he was rushing through the checkpoint to pick up his sister ahead of her wedding that same day.The injured Border Police officer insisted that the incident was deliberate, however. Shani Orr Hama Kadosh said in an Israeli TV interview: “I signaled to him to halt, the car started to slow down, and I moved in his direction. He saw that I took a step, he looked me in the eye, turned the steering wheel and rammed into me, and I flew to the other side” of the median.Moustafa Mousa Erekat, who submitted the appeal with the legal aid organization Adalah on Tuesday, said his son’s body has been held by the Israel Defense Forces since the alleged attack, even though the IDF had initially promised to return it.In a statement this week, the family demanded “the release of the body of our son Ahmad Erekat in order for us to allow him a proper and dignified burial and to allow our family to bid farewell and mourn in peace.”“When you see his father’s face, his eyes, you can feel that he’s completely lost for words from his grief and pain. He just wants the return of his son’s remains. It’s the natural right of everyone, everywhere in the world, but Palestinians don’t even have the right to say goodbye,” Ahmad’s cousin Dalal Erekat told The Times of Israel.According to the plaintiffs, the IDF originally told the family that Ahmad Erekat’s body would be returned to them on the night of June 24, the day after the shooting. The family then began to prepare for a funeral at their home in Abu Dis.Shani Orr Hama Kadosh, a Border Police officer who was injured in a suspected ramming attack on June 23, 2020, describes the incident in an interview the following day. (Screenshot/Channel 13)-Some hours later, the plaintiffs claimed in court filings, the family was contacted again and told that the body would continue to be withheld due to “political considerations.”The bodies of over 50 Palestinians killed while allegedly committing acts of terror are currently being held by the IDF, according to the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem. In 2019, the Israeli High Court ruled that the IDF could keep bodies of alleged terrorists in custody for the purpose of ensuring national security, such as using the remains of Hamas terrorists as bargaining chips in an eventual exchange with the Gaza-based terror group. In December 2019, then-defense minister Naftali Bennett announced that all terrorists’ bodies would be kept, regardless of whether they were affiliated with Hamas. The controversial policy rested on shaky legal grounds, as the High Court’s ruling only allowed bodies to be withheld for national security reasons. Last week, the Ynet news site reported that Defense Minister Benny Gantz had ordered a similar policy. In the video from the incident, a car driven by Erekat can be seen approaching a checkpoint in Abu Dis, before abruptly accelerating and turning toward a group of police. The car then rams into a female officer — who is knocked into the air — before colliding with a booth and coming to a stop. He was then shot by police officers after exiting the vehicle.“He waited for a good moment, turned from the middle of the lane to the side to get a better angle to hurt the officer and then accelerated, turning his car 90 degrees and lunged wildly at the officers,” the Border Police said in a statement at the time, defending the actions of the officers on the scene. However, Ahmad’s cousin and senior Palestinian Liberation Organization official Saeb Erekat said that Border Police had executed him “in cold blood.”His cousin Dalal Erekat told The Times of Israel that Ahmad would not have carried out an attack.“Ahmad was a normal man, a young man, who didn’t really belong to any political organization, nor was particularly religious, he had a close network of social relationships…He had no motives, not even the slightest reason that could have led him to do such a thing,” she said.In a second video that emerged after the alleged attack, Erekat is seen in his car speaking of rumors he has collaborated with Israeli security forces while promising he is “no snitch.” Some Hebrew media reports said the video was made shortly before the incident. But according to Kan news, Erekat’s family said it was a months-old clip.In response to a request for comment on the case, the IDF told The Times of Israel that the government’s response would be submitted to the High Court “according to the appropriate procedure.”

UK woman handed life sentence for plot to blow up St. Paul’s Cathedral-Prosecutors say Safiyya Shaikh, an Islamic State supporter, also planned to blow up a hotel and detonate a suicide vest on a London Underground train-By AP-july 3,20-Today, 5:11 pm

LONDON — A woman was jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of 14 years, on Friday for plotting to blow up London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, a nearby hotel and a subway train in a suicide attackSafiyya Shaikh, 37, extensively researched how to cause maximum carnage at the historic church and visitor attraction. Police said she had planned to leave a bomb in a bag at the cathedral before detonating a suicide vest on a London Underground train. Her defense lawyers said she had doubts about the plot, but prosecutors disclosed details of a call she made to a friend from prison last week in which she said she “didn’t get cold feet” and “was ready to go through with it.”The Muslim convert, who was a supporter of the Islamic State jihadist group, pleaded guilty to creating a terrorist act and dissemination of a terrorist publication. An undated photo released by London’s Metropolitan Police on February 21, 2020, shows Safiyya Amira Shaikh. (Metropolitan Police via AP-Shaikh, born Michelle Ramsden, was arrested in October after she sought help from an undercover officer who posed as a bomb-making expert.“She engaged with others, who she believed to be of a similar mindset, to instigate and plan a terrorist attack involving the use of improvised explosives to attack St Paul’s Cathedral and a hotel nearby,” prosecutor Alison Morgan said. “She visited the cathedral to assess its security arrangements and the best place to detonate a bomb.”“She stated that her intention was to kill herself and as many other people as possible,” she added.Police said Shaikh was also heavily involved in extremist propaganda posts online and inspiring others to fight.

20  And Isaac was forty years old (A BIBLE GENERATION NUMBER=1967 + 40=2007+) when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21  And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22  And the children (2 NATIONS IN HER-ISRAEL-ARABS) struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels;(ISRAEL AND THE ARABS) and the one people shall be stronger than the other people;(ISRAEL STRONGER THAN ARABS) and the elder shall serve the younger.(LITERALLY ISRAEL THE YOUNGER RULES (ISSAC)(JACOB-LATER NAME CHANGED TO ISRAEL) OVER THE OLDER ARABS (ISHMAEL)(ESAU)

40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Hopelessly vague or calm and collected? Deciphering Gantz’s views on annexation-The Times of Israel-Analysis-Blue and White leader’s positions on unilateral action appear nebulous and contradictory, but his associates insist they can be squared and that he supports the move…just not now-By Jacob Magid-july 3,20-Today, 4:18 pm

During his nearly four decades of service in the IDF, a nickname was pinned to Benny Gantz that every so often gets recalled in his new, post-army life as a politician: benny-huta.The term can generally and generously be translated to describe someone who is laid-back and nonchalant, but has been used by Gantz’s detractors to brand him as lackadaisical, indecisive and lacking killer instincts. For the latter group, it’s a rather bold nickname to try to attach to someone who managed to climb to the very top of the army’s ranks before swiftly transitioning into politics and reserving himself a spot in the Prime Minister’s Residence for November 2021 (so long as its current occupant, Benjamin Netanyahu, holds up his end of the coalition agreement). But the benny-huta epithet has come to mind for many lawmakers and analysts in recent weeks, who have tried to decipher the Blue and White leader/defense minister’s views on Netanyahu’s plans to unilaterally annex as much as 30 percent of the West Bank.Then-IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz has a snowball fight with a family of Palestinians along the West Bank’s Route 60 on December 15, 2013. (Judah Ari Gross/Israel Defense Forces)-While the Blue and White-Likud coalition deal ultimately leaves a final decision on the matter in Netanyahu’s — and not Gantz’s — hands, the dense wording of Clause 29 also conditions annexation on an “agreement to be reached with the United States.”The White House, according to senior Israeli officials familiar with the matter, is keen on seeing Gantz get behind the controversial move as well, in order to demonstrate that there’s broad Israeli consensus behind annexation, before it goes ahead and gives it a green light. Essentially, Washington believes that the Blue and White leader is just as representative, if not more representative, of the Israeli mainstream on this issue than Netanyahu, so that it appears to have given him something akin to veto power — not exactly the kind of feat that a novice, lackadaisical politician can easily accomplish. So what does Benny Gantz think about annexation? Netanyahu, who has held several meetings with the defense minister on this very issue in recent weeks, has admitted to being unsure as to where his senior coalition partner stands. “We don’t know with regards to Blue and White — that’s a good question. I don’t know which side they fall on the issue either,” a Likud official quoted the premier as having said during a faction meeting last month. The director of the Yesha umbrella council of settler mayors was asked the same question by reporters after Gantz met with his group in June. Yigal Dilmoni put his palms up and shrugged. “I don’t know. We haven’t managed to understand what his opinion is on the matter.”Both observations were made by members of the right-wing camp who aren’t exactly harmed by presenting the Blue and White defense minister as oafish, but Gantz’s own comments on the matter over the years haven’t helped clarify matters much either. From left to right: Blue and White Party MK Yair Lapid, party leader Benny Gantz, Special Adviser to the US President Jared Kushner, and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman during a meeting at the US Embassy in Jerusalem, October 28, 2019. (Jeries Mansour, US Embassy Jerusalem)-In a 2018 interview roughly a year before he jumped into the political ring, Gantz told Channel 12 that settlements like “[those in] the Etzion bloc, Ariel, Ofra and Elkana will remain forever,” grouping together communities closer to the Green Line with ones deep in the West Bank as ones he does not want to evacuate in a future peace agreement.“But [the question is] how we arrange that they will remain forever,” Gantz added, without elaborating.Defense Minister Benny Gantz at the weekly cabinet meeting at the Foreign Affairs Ministry on June 28, 2020. (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)-While he has made a point in recent months of stressing his opposition to “unilateral moves,” that does not appear to be how he has always felt.In his first interview upon entering politics as the head of the Israel Resilience Party, Gantz was pressed on whether he thought the 2005 Gaza Disengagement had been a mistake. His response was tellingly vague, but also very clearly not the one of someone who claims to fundamentally oppose unilateral actions to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “It was a legal move, a decision made by the Israeli government and carried out by the IDF and the settlers in a painful, but good manner. We need to take the lessons learned and implement them elsewhere,” he said.Benny Gantz, head of the Israel Resilience party speaks at an event to present the party’s election slate, held in Tel Aviv on February 19, 2019. (Tomer Neuberg/Flash90)-Only later in 2019 when the Blue and White party published its platform was Gantz’s position on such unilateral moves clarified, a little. The centrist alliance vowed not to carry out another “disengagement.” Unilaterally withdrawing from land was “out,” but as for unilaterally extending sovereignty onto additional land, the platform did not specify.Fast forward to this year and Gantz has gingerly begun speaking more openly about unilateral annexation as Netanyahu has vowed more incessantly to see it through. The White House peace plan’s envisioning of Israel enacting sovereignty over all West Bank settlements as well as the Jordan Valley effectively left the Blue and White leader with little choice. But even before the US proposal was unveiled in January, Gantz made a campaign stop in the Jordan Valley settlement of Vered Yericho where he vowed to annex the strategic eastern corridor amounting to roughly 20% of the West Bank “in coordination with the international community.”The qualifier subsequently highlighted regularly by Ganz has been ridiculed by some analysts as oxymoronic, given the vehement opposition both in Jordan and in the overwhelming majority of capitals around the globe to a unilateral move they argue would mark the death-knell for the two state solution.Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz (R) and Moshe Ya’alon at the Vered Yericho settlement in the West Bank on January 21, 2020. (Hadas Parush/Flash90)-Don’t take it literally-In an effort to explain the seeming contradiction, one Blue and White official speaking on the condition of anonymity said that while “much of the world fundamentally opposes annexation, it would have been easier to carry out had it been introduced as part of a dialogue with our allies, rather than a campaign promise to the settlers.”Gantz appears to have adopted a similar position with regards to the overall Trump peace plan, which envisions Israel annexing far more territory than Gantz had previously signaled support for.A source familiar with the Blue and White party’s discussions on the matter explained that Gantz is interested in promoting the peace plan “in its entirety. However, not even the administration is saying that the plan needs to be implemented from A-Z.”“It should be looked at as a framework for negotiations, and the focus should not only be on the annexation part,” she said.US President Donald Trump meets with Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz in the White House in Washington on January 27, 2020. (Elad Malka)-Asked if that meant Gantz opposes certain parts of the plan, the source said the Blue and White chairman has expressed his disagreement with the “possibility” raised in the proposal that the Arab-Israeli towns in the so-called Triangle near the West Bank be transferred to the future Palestinian state. The source did not give another example of a part of the Trump plan that Gantz does not support. The Blue and White chairman further believes the Trump plan represents an opportunity that both Ramallah and Amman — despite their public opposition —  may be able to get behind, including its clauses on annexation, the source said. What you see from here, you don’t see from there-Gantz’s associates acknowledged that the coalition deal’s clause on allowing annexation to move forward on July 1 had been a compromise Blue and White was forced to swallow in exchange for a larger say on other issues. However, the centrist leader does appear to have increasingly warmed to the idea since becoming a member of the government slated to carry it out.“What’s being offered to you, take. As for the rest, you can deal with it later,” several settler leaders quoted Gantz as having told them last month.Defense Minister Benny Gantz (middle) poses with settler leaders at the IDF’s Judea and Samaria Division Headquarters in the Beit El settlement on June 9, 2020. (Ariel Hermoni/Defense Ministry)-While similarly requesting to speak on background, another Blue and White official was intent on conveying that the party chairman’s support for annexation of the settlement blocs closer to the Green Line is not just theoretical. “What exactly did the left think he meant when throughout three elections he expressed support for enacting sovereignty in the blocs? That it was a front to woo right-wing voters?”Gantz himself went further in a briefing to military reporters last month, saying, “We won’t continue to wait for the Palestinians. If they say no forever to everything, then we’ll be forced to move forward without them.” He described the Palestinians’ ongoing rejectionism as their “deep shit” and said Israel would not get dragged into it.However, he later clarified that he opposed annexing territory with Palestinians in it and that any Palestinians in territory to be annexed should be offered equal rights. Gantz also stressed the need for maintaining freedom of movement for Palestinians in the West Bank.He also vowed not “to endanger peace agreements” with the move, but did not elaborate with a plan on preventing a major diplomatic riff with Jordan, which has reportedly threatened to cancel its peace agreement with Israel if Jerusalem moves forward with annexation.Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz speaks to reporters near the West Bank settlement on Migdal Oz, after yeshiva student Dvir Yehuda was killed in a terror attack, on August 8, 2019. (Gershon Elinson/Flash90)-Now or never-But just as Gantz’s position on the matter had been shifting from foggy to theoretically supportive, his comments over the past week have forced those trying to understand his thinking to once again pause and scratch their heads. The defense minister told White House peace envoy Avi Berkowitz on Monday that “July 1 is not a sacred date,” according to a source close to Gantz, dismissing the target day long hailed by Netanyahu for when he planned to start moving the matter forward.“Dealing with the coronavirus and its socio-economic and health consequences is the more pressing issue that needs to be tended to right now,” the Blue and White leader was quoted as having said.In a subsequent interview, Gantz went further. “One million unemployed people don’t know what we’re talking about right now,” he said in reference to discussions on annexation.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz attend the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on June 7, 2020. (Menahem KAHANA / AFP)-Not only did he say that the issue should wait until after the coronavirus has dissipated but also that he expected the pandemic to last for a year to a year-and-a-half.even if the current polls are as off the mark as they were ahead of the previous US presidential election, presumptive Democratic party nominee Joe Biden could still edge out President Donald Trump in November. So when Gantz talks of delaying annexation for another 12 to 18 months, he’s effectively proposing shelving the move entirely as the Democratic nominee’s campaign has made clear that it will not support such a unilateral move, which both the prime minister and defense minister recognize cannot move forward without US support. For political reasons, the Blue and White leader will likely not go as far as to spell that conclusion out. But those who disparagingly refer to Gantz as benny-huta are likely to do so when they look for someone to blame if annexation isn’t carried out in the end.

Morocco asks Amnesty for proof it used Israeli spyware on critic-The Times of Israel-PM demands evidence to support claim Rabat used surveillance software from NSO Group to spy on journalist; unnamed official says Morocco doesn’t have the tech ‘at its disposal’-By AFP-july 3,20-Today, 3:27 pm

RABAT, Morocco — Morocco’s prime minister has demanded Amnesty International provide evidence to support its allegations that Rabat used spyware to bug a journalist’s phone.Amnesty said in June the Moroccan authorities used software developed by Israeli security firm NSO to insert spyware onto the cellphone of Omar Radi, a journalist convicted in March over a social media post. The Pegasus software can switch on the phone’s camera and microphone as well as access data.If the international watchdog fails to provide evidence, the kingdom “will take the necessary steps to defend its national security” and “clear up public opinion” on the allegations, Prime Minister Saad-Eddine El Othmani said in a statement carried by the Moroccan Press Agency on Thursday.Morocco’s Prime Minister Saad Eddine el-Othmani addresses the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sept. 24, 2019, at the UN headquarters. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)-Last week, the Moroccan authorities said they summoned the local director of the London-based group to demand proof about the “serious and tendentious accusations,” but did not get a response.Without proof, Amnesty’s allegations amount to “an unjust international defamation campaign dictated by an agenda having nothing to do with human rights,” the statement said.It went on to denounce the organization’s “systematic and continual persecution against Morocco’s interests.”In addition, Morocco “does not have at its disposal NSO technology,” a senior government official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to the Israeli security firm.An Israeli woman uses her phone in front of a building in Herzliya that housed the NSO Group intelligence firm, August 28, 2016. (Jack Guez/AFP/File)-Rabat said last week it was investigating if Radi received foreign funding for intelligence services.Thursday’s statement said the journalist is “undergoing a judicial investigation for suspected breach of state security, because of his links to a liaison officer of a foreign country.”It said the alleged foreign agent has “worked under diplomatic cover since 1979 in several regions of tension” around the world.Last week, Radi told AFP the legal action was connected to the Amnesty report, denouncing the allegations against him as “ridiculous.”Amnesty said he had been “systematically targeted by the Moroccan authorities due to his journalism and activism.”In March, he was given a four-month suspended sentence for criticizing a judge in a tweet.NSO is being sued in the US by messaging service WhatsApp over alleged cyber-espionage on human rights activists and others. The Israeli firm says it only licenses its software to governments for “fighting crime and terror” and that it investigates credible allegations of misuse.

Russia welcomes Fatah and Hamas unity pledge-The Times of Israel-Lavrov calls on Arab governments to support unification efforts between Ramallah-based PA and Gaza-ruling terror group-By AFP-july 3,20-Today, 7:21 pm

MOSCOW — Russia welcomed Friday a pledge of unity between Palestinian factions Fatah and the Hamas terror group against Israel’s West Bank annexation plans. In a rare joint press conference on Thursday, the rival factions pledged a united campaign against Israel’s prospective plans to annex territory in the West Bank.“We noted with satisfaction the joint press conference held yesterday by representatives of Fatah and Hamas during which a decision was announced to jointly defend the interests of the Palestinian government based on the platform of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation,” said Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.Speaking at a meeting with a top Libyan official, Lavrov added that the “restoration of Palestinian unity” was “one of the key questions that needs to be resolved.”He said Moscow was counting on “all Arab representatives to actively support this trend.”Lavrov spoke at a meeting in Moscow with Aguila Saleh, speaker of Libya’s elected parliament based in the country’s east.Fatah, which controls the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, and Hamas that runs the Gaza Strip have been plagued by divisions for more than a decade.Senior Fatah official Jibril Rajoub, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, attends by video conference a meeting with deputy Hamas chief Saleh Arouri (on screen from Beirut) discussing Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank, on July 2, 2020. (ABBAS MOMANI / AFP)-The joint press conference was spurred by their common opposition to US President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan. The plan paves the way for Israel to annex roughly 30 percent of the West Bank, including Jewish settlements in the territory, which many considered illegal under international law.In a formal counter-proposal presented to the international peacemaking Quartet including Russia, the Palestinian leadership said they are prepared to renew long-stalled peace talks with Israel and to agree to “minor” territorial concessions.Lavrov stressed the need to “immediately renew, relaunch direct Israeli-Palestinians talks under the aegis of the quartet of international peace brokers and with the active participation of Arab states.”Russia has close ties both with Israel and the Palestinians and has said it is ready to host direct talks between the two sides.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented Trump’s plan to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in January.

Russia's constitutional changes to come into force on July 4 -Kremlin-[Reuters]-July 3, 2020

MOSCOW, July 3 (Reuters) - Changes to the Russian constitution, including an amendment that could pave the way for President Vladimir Putin to rule the country until 2036, will come into force on July 4, the Kremlin said on Friday. The electorate overwhelmingly supported the changes, which were approved after a nationwide week of voting that came to an end on Wednesday, with almost 78% of people casting their ballot in favour. The Kremlin hailed the vote as a triumph, while critics decried it as illegal and illegitimate. An independent monitoring group said the vote was deeply flawed.Other key reforms include an amendment granting former Russian presidents automatic immunity from criminal prosecution, as well as reforms enshrining a reference to "belief in God" and a statement about marriage being only the union of a man and a woman. Business-The UK government to acquire satellite company OneWeb in deal funded in part by India's Bharti Global-[TechCrunch]-Darrell Etherington-july 3,20

The UK government to acquire satellite company OneWeb in deal funded in part by India's Bharti GlobalDistressed satellite constellation operator OneWeb, which had entered bankruptcy protection proceedings at the end of March, has completed a sale process, with a consortium led by the UK Government as the winner. The group, which includes funding from India's Bharti Global – part of business magnate Sunil Mittal's Bharti Enterprises – plan to pursue OneWeb's plans of building out a broadband internets satellite network, while the UK would also like to potentially use the constellation for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services in order to replace the EU's sat-nav resource, which the UK lost access to in January as a result of Brexit. The deal involves both Bharti Global and the UK government putting up around $500 million each, respectively, with the UK taking a 20 percent equity stake in OneWeb, and Bharti supplying the business management and commercial operations for the satellite firm.OneWeb, which has launched a total of 74 of its planned 650 satellite constellation to date, suffered lay-offs and the subsequent bankruptcy filing after an attempt to raise additional funding to support continued launches and operations fell through. That was reportedly due in large part to majority private investor SoftBank backing out of commitments to invest additional funds. The BBC reports that while OneWeb plans to essentially scale back up its existing operations, including reversing lay-offs, should the deal pass regulatory scrutiny, there's a possibility that down the road it could relocate some of its existing manufacturing capacity to the UK. Currently, OneWeb does its spacecraft manufacturing out of Florida in a partnership with Airbus.OneWeb is a London-based company already, and its constellation can provide access to low latency, high-speed broadband via low Earth orbit small satellites, which could potentially be a great resource for connecting UK citizens to affordable, quality connections. The PNT navigation services extension would be an extension of OneWeb's existing mission, but theoretically, it's a relatively inexpensive way to leverage planned in-space assets to serve a second purpose. Also, while the UK currently lacks its own native launch capabilities, the country is working towards developing a number of spaceports for both vertical and horizontal take-off – which could enable companies like Virgin Orbit, and other newcomers like Skyrora, to establish small-sat launch capabilities from UK soil, which would make maintaining and extending in-space assets like OneWeb's constellation much more accessible as a domestic resource.
