US gears up for weekend protests amid anger at new police abuses-The Times of Israel-Massive street demonstrations are set for Saturday, with tens of thousands expected in Washington, as controversy builds over use of force against largely peaceful demonstrators-By Peter HUTCHISON    Today, 8:17 am 0

NEW YORK (AFP) — The United States braced Friday for massive weekend protests against racism and police brutality, as outrage soared over the latest law enforcement abuses against demonstrators that were caught on camera. With protests over last week’s police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, surging into a second weekend, US President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy by saying it was a “great day” for Floyd.Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for November’s election, called Trump’s comments “frankly despicable,” as thousands took to streets across America for a 10th straight day of anti-racism demonstrations.Massive street demonstrations are set for Saturday, including in Washington where tens of thousands of people are expected. The mayor painted “Black Lives Matter” in giant letters on the road leading to the White House ahead of the crowd’s arrival. With the Washington Monument in the background people walk on the street leading to the White House after the words Black Lives Matter were painted on it by city workers and activists Friday, June 5, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)-Also on Saturday a remembrance for Floyd will be held in Raeford, North Carolina, the state where he was born, following an initial ceremony in Minneapolis that was held Thursday. The protests, sparked by a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes as he pleaded for his life, took place amid a roiling controversy over officers’ use of force against largely peaceful demonstrators. In Buffalo, New York, two policemen were suspended without pay after a video showed them shoving over a 75-year-old protester who fell and suffered a head injury. In this image from video provided by WBFO, a Buffalo police officer appears to shove a man who walked up to police on June 4, 2020, in Buffalo, New York. (Mike Desmond/WBFO via AP)-Reporting the suspension on Twitter, Mayor Byron Brown said he and the police commissioner were “deeply disturbed” by the video. An earlier police statement said the man, who appeared unconscious and bleeding heavily from the head, “tripped and fell.”Governor Andrew Cuomo called the incident “wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful,” in a tweet. In Indianapolis, police launched an investigation after a video emerged showing at least four officers hitting a woman with batons and firing pepper balls at her on Sunday night. And in New York City Thursday, officers baton-charged dozens of peaceful protesters defying a curfew in the Bronx after pinning them in, leaving them with nowhere to run, several reports said.New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced Friday that two officers had been suspended following “several troubling incidents,” one for pushing a woman to the ground and another for pulling down a man’s face mask and spraying pepper spray at him. Both incidents were caught on video.‘Out of control’Under-fire New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who imposed the week-long night-time curfew after widespread looting earlier in the week, has repeatedly said the NYPD is showing “restraint.”In an editorial published Friday, The New York Times called on him to “open your eyes.“The police are out of control,” it said.Floyd, 46, died in the Midwestern city of Minneapolis while handcuffed during a May 25 arrest for a non-violent offense. His death reignited longstanding resentment over police killings of African Americans and unleashed a nationwide wave of protest unlike anything seen in the US since Martin Luther King’s 1968 assassination.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (2nd L) takes a knee during in a Black Lives Matter protest on Parliament Hill June 5, 2020 in Ottawa, Canada (Dave Chan / AFP)Mass protests have also taken place in European capitals and on Friday Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined a large demonstration in Ottawa. The action has handed Trump one of the greatest challenges of his tumultuous presidency. While condemning Floyd’s death, he has adopted a tough stance towards the protesters and has been accused of exacerbating tensions.US civil rights groups have filed a case suing Trump after security forces fired pepper balls and smoke bombs to clear peaceful demonstrators in Washington before the president walked to a church for a photo op earlier this week.Mayor Muriel Bowser Friday renamed the area outside the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” — unveiling a giant street mural — after tweeting a letter calling on Trump to “withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from our city.”But Trump was back in a buoyant mood following the release of strong job numbers Friday. He told reporters that such violence as Floyd’s death in handcuffs cannot be allowed to happen.US President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference in the Rose Garden of the White House, Friday, June 5, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)-Nevertheless, Trump added, “Hopefully George is looking down right now and saying this is a great thing for our country.”“This is a great day for him. It’s a great day for everybody,” he said.Biden immediately slammed Trump for invoking Floyd’s name.“George Floyd’s last words, ‘I can’t breathe,’ have echoed across our nation and around the world.“For the President to try to put any other words in his mouth is frankly despicable,” he tweeted.Curfews lifted-Some of the early protests were marred by rioting and looting but they have been mostly peaceful since then.

PA said to tell ICC that Oslo Accords are void along with all other Israel deals-The Times of Israel-Palestinian Authority answers query from judges on Mahmoud Abbas’s declaration last month voiding all agreements with Israel, ahead of a ruling on jurisdiction for war crimes probe-By TOI staff and Raphael Ahren-june 8,20-Today, 11:14 am

The Palestinian Authority reportedly told the International Criminal Court on Thursday that it stands by a statement made by PA President Mahmoud Abbas last month which said that Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank would void all Palestinian-Israeli agreements, including the Oslo Accords, and that the PA is already from its responsibilities under these agreements. The statement came after three judges last week asked the PA to clarify the situation. The judges — who make up the pretrial chamber tasked with ruling on whether the court has jurisdiction to open a criminal investigation into suspected war crimes committed on Palestinian territories — had given Ramallah a June 10 deadline to respond to their query.According to the Haaretz daily, in response to the request, the PA re-released a statement Abbas had originally made in May, declaring that “if Israel proceeds with annexation, a material breach of the agreements between the two sides, then it will have annulled any remnants of the Oslo Accords and all other agreements concluded between them.”The statement was said to continue that Israel’s “persistent violations of these agreements, and its announced plans and measures for annexation, absolve the Palestine Liberation Organization and the State of Palestine from any obligation arising from these agreements, including security.”However, the PA reportedly emphasized that Abbas’s statement should not be considered part of the court’s legal proceedings.Bill Clinton looks on as Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shake hands during the signing of the Oslo Accords, September 13, 1993. (photo credit: courtesy GPO)-The Oslo Accords were signed in Washington in 1993. A follow-up agreement two years later, sometimes called Oslo II, set out the scope of Palestinian autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza. The interim pact was only supposed to last five years while a permanent agreement was finalized but it has tacitly been rolled over for more than two decades.Observers have said the pretrial chamber’s interest in the status of the 1993 accords put Ramallah in a bind: If it renounces the agreement that for the first time granted it autonomy in the areas it claims for its state, and thus hands the keys back to Israel, how can it argue that Palestine is a sovereign state that can transfer jurisdiction to The Hague for a war crimes investigation? The court’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, whose opinion that the court does have jurisdiction to launch the probe is partially based on the Oslo Accords, has been ordered by the pretrial chamber to respond to the Palestinians’ response by June 14.????#PTC1 / @IntlCrimCourt requests submissions from #Palestine in light of #MohammedAbbas (#AbuMaazen) declaration of 19.5.20 that @nadplo and @Palestine_UN are no longer bound by the Oslo Accords and all understandings incl security. The three judges of that chamber — Péter Kovács of Hungary, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut of France and Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou of Benin — have no set deadline to hand down their decision but are expected to do so within 90 days.Judge Péter Kovács (Courtesy ICC-CPI/Max Koot)-Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. (Mikhail Evstafiev / Wikipedia)-Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou (Courtesy: ICC-CPI)-Last week, the pretrial chamber surprisingly issued a document saying that Abbas’s comments about no longer being bound by agreements with Israel came to its attention, and it “requests Palestine to provide additional information on this statement, including on the question whether it pertains to any of the Oslo agreements between Palestine and Israel.”The chamber also “invite[d] Israel to respond to any additional information” Ramallah may provide by June 24.But Jerusalem, which has long argued that Palestine is not a sovereign state and therefore cannot transfer criminal jurisdiction over its territory to the Hague, is unlikely to accept the judges’ offer, lest any formal engagement with the court be seen as legitimizing it.Netanyahu has repeatedly denounced the ICC and declared thwarting a possible war crimes probe one of the new government’s top priorities.

Tel Aviv rally against annexation plan to go ahead after police backtrack on ban-The Times of Israel-Law enforcement want participants at Saturday evening protest limited to 2,000 although unclear how this would be enforced; Joint List chief won’t attend due to virus quarantine-By TOI staff-june 7,20-Today, 9:20 am

Police on Friday backtracked on a ban for a rally in Tel Aviv against Israel’s annexation plans, saying the protest can go ahead Saturday evening if social distancing regulations are maintained.According to the Haaretz daily, organizers have pledged to mark up the city’s iconic Rabin Square so that demonstrators stand separated, and have pledged to avoid blocking surrounding roads and to limit the number of participants to 2,000. It was unclear how this could be enforced. The event, titled, “No to the occupation, no to annexation, yes to democracy,” will kick off with a march from the Tel Aviv Art Museum to the square. The event was banned by police on Thursday, who said that current virus regulations did not permit marches despite there being no such clause in the rules. The ban was rescinded after meetings with organizers, who were asked not to advertise the event.Police reportedly issued a formal permit for the rally after talks with MKs from the Joint List party and left-wing activists who said that demonstrators would gather at the square in any case.Joint List leader Ayman Odeh speaks during a protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on April 19, 2020. (Tomer Neuberg/Flash90)Joint List leader Ayman Odeh announced Friday that he would not be attending the rally as he remains in isolation after coming in contact with MK Sami Abou Shahadeh from his party who later tested positive for the coronavirus. Odeh said that even though he himself tested negative, he will remain quarantined under Health Ministry regulations.“Unfortunately, I will not be able to show you on Saturday night, but I urge every Arab and Jewish citizen to come out and protest against the danger of annexation and occupation and for peace and democracy,” Odeh said in a video message.Police forcibly broke up a rally late Thursday night, also at Rabin Square, against emergency coronavirus regulations, arresting 12 demonstrators. The protesters who were arrested had blocked traffic, attacked bystanders and police, and damaged property, the police said.Saturday night’s rally comes amid a wave of regional and international criticism of the planned Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank under the peace plan being advanced by the Trump administration in the US.After more than a year of political deadlock and two inconclusive elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and rival Benny Gantz in April joined in a coalition government and under their agreement, from July 1 Netanyahu can move ahead with his annexation project.Much of the international community has already expressed strong opposition to the move and the US has also recently indicated that it wants Israel to slow down.Palestinians are vocal in their opposition to US President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan, which gives Israel the green light to annex Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley in what is intended to be part of a negotiated process but may go ahead unilaterally.Palestinians in the West Bank on Friday rallied to mark 53 years since the 1967 Six Day War and protest against the Israeli government’s annexation plans.A Palestinian man throws a tire during clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank village of Qusin near Nablus, June 5, 2020. (AP/Majdi Mohammed)In Tulkarem, in the northern West Bank, dozens of demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans. Israeli troops fired stun grenades and tear gas to repel protesters approaching a military checkpoint.Near Tubas, also in the northern West Bank, a protester was wounded in the head by a rubber bullet fired by Israeli forces, the Palestinian Red Crescent said. There was no immediate comment from the IDF.Further protests took place in the West Bank cities of Ramallah, Nablus, Jericho, and the Jordan Valley, an area which could be annexed as part of the Israeli plan.In the southern West Bank city of Hebron hundreds gathered, chanting against Israel and the US.Friday’s protests coincided with the anniversary of what Palestinians call the Naksa, the defeat of Arab countries by Israel in the Six Day War of June 1967.Agencies contributed to this report.

More Israelis oppose West Bank annexation than support it — survey-The Times of Israel-JUNE 7,20-Poll by dovish Geneva Initiative contradicts findings from another recent study, which saw a plurality of Israelis back the move-By TOI staff-Today, 8:33 pm

More Israelis oppose annexation of West Bank land than support it, and only 3.5% list it among their top priorities, according to a survey commissioned and published by the left-wing Geneva Initiative group. The opinion poll showed that 41.7% of the public oppose annexation while 32.2% support it, the group said in a statement on Sunday, hours after thousands rallied in Tel Aviv against the proposal. Some 48% believe such a move — planned for next month by the government in coordination with the Trump administration — would harm chances to achieve peace with the Palestinians, while just 13.8% think it would aid peace prospects.Just 3.5% mentioned annexation when asked about their top two priorities for the country. The economy was listed by 42.4% of respondents, public health by 24.6% and security by 17.4%.Even among backers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, only half support annexation, the survey found. The vast majority of supporters of Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party oppose it.The poll was conducted in early June among 621 respondents representing Israel’s adult population. The margin of error is 3.9% As part of their coalition agreement, Netanyahu and Blue and White chief Gantz, who is defense minister, agreed the government can begin moving forward with applying Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley after July 1, a move expected to enjoy backing from a majority of lawmakers in the current Knesset.Much of the international community has already expressed strong opposition to the move, and the US has also recently intimated that it wants Israel to slow down.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu points at a map of the Jordan Valley as he gives a statement, promising to extend Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea area, in Ramat Gan on September 10, 2019. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)-Palestinians are vocal in their opposition to Trump’s plan, which gives Israel the green light to annex Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley, in what is intended to be part of a negotiated process but may go ahead unilaterally. The step is also forcefully opposed by many Israelis, including settler leaders who joined the chorus of left-wing opposition to the proposal last week because of its eventual vision of an independent Palestinian state. The Geneva Initiative study contradicted another poll last month, in which 44.7 percent of respondents to an Israel Democracy Institute survey said they support or strongly support annexation. The poll found 31.8% oppose annexation, and 23.5% didn’t know or didn’t answer. A slight majority of 51.7% Jewish Israeli support annexation, the poll found, while among Arab Israelis, only 8.8% were in favor.Among Jews, 27.9% opposed annexation, and 20.4% didn’t know or didn’t answer. Among Arabs, 51.9% were opposed, and 39.4% didn’t know or didn’t answer. Support for annexation among Jews was unsurprisingly divided on political lines, with 71% of self-defined right-wing Jews backing it, along with 31% of centrists and only 8% of left-wingers, according to the IDI poll.

In 2018, the group named Shallah’s deputy, Ziad al-Nakhalah, as a new leader.Ramadan Shallah was on the US “most wanted list” of terrorist suspects with a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.Dozens of mourners, including his successor Nakhala, gathered around his coffin draped in the group’s banner in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus, after receiving special permission to gather despite the threat of novel coronavirus.A funeral procession then headed to a cemetery in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp on the edge of the capital, where the Palestinian source said Shalah had wanted to be buried if not in his birthplace of the Gaza Strip. An AFP photographer saw his coffin lowered into a grave.Palestinian Islamic Jihad has offices in Syria and Lebanon, but most of its activities are focused in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.“We pledge to continue the route of resistance until we liberate Palestine with the allies in Syria, Iran and Hezbollah,” al-Nakhalah told the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV during the funeral. In a statement, Islamic Jihad in Gaza bid farewell to “the great leader whose history… we recall since the founding of the Jihad movement.”Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas paid tribute to Shalah on Saturday night, saying the Palestinian people had “lost a great national figure”, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.Earlier Sunday Hebrew media reports cited Palestinian sources and media as saying that Egypt had given permission to transfer Shalah’s body to the Gaza Strip for burial. Gaza shares a border with Israel and Egypt although the two countries coordinate on security concerning the Palestinian enclave.Former defense minister MK Naftali Bennett, leader of the Yamina party that is now in the opposition, tweeted criticism of the government for reportedly allowing Shalah to be buried in Gaza.“Why did you approve the transfer of the body of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shalah for burial in the Gaza Strip. Why not make it conditional on the release of the deceased IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul? Why give our enemies a present for free?”The Hamas terror group is believed to be hold the remains of the two soldiers who were killed during the 2014 Operation Protective Edge when the IDF battled against Hamas-led Palestinian groups in Gaza.Yamina party leader MK Naftali Bennett, at a press conference in Jerusalem on May 14, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Shalah was born in 1958 and later traveled to Egypt and Great Britain for his higher studies. He settled in Syria in 1995 when he became leader of the Islamic Jihad group. In 2006, the FBI listed Shalah among its “most wanted terrorists,” offering $5 million for information leading to his apprehension.Alongside its Gaza allies Hamas, Islamic Jihad has fought three wars with Israel since 2008.Branded a “terrorist” organization by the United States and the European Union, it opposes the peace agreements signed between Israel and the internationally recognized Palestinian leadership.Last year, the movement took part in several rounds of heavy fighting with Israel. But in recent months it has remained committed to an unofficial truce brokered by regional mediators between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic terror group ruling Gaza.PIJ previously has taken part in numerous suicide bombings, shootings and rocket attacks that killed dozens of Israelis.

Iran’s Rouhani condemns Floyd’s ‘brutal’ killing, slams Trump for Bible photo op-The Times of Israel-Officials in Tehran continue to seize on unrest in US in order to turn finger normally pointed at them for Islamic Republic’s brutal crackdowns on US authorities instead-By Agencies-june 4,20-Today, 3:09 pm

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday called George Floyd’s killing “brutal” and criticized US President Donald Trump for posing for photos while holding a Bible.Rouhani in a televised speech said Floyd “was killed in the most brutal way.”“We express sympathy toward the American people who are on the streets while harshly condemning the crime,” he said, referring to Floyd’s death after a white police officer was caught on video pressing his knee to Floyd’s neck.Rouhani also made reference to the clearing of peaceful protesters from a park outside the White House with chemical agents and flash bang grenades so that Trump could walk to a church for a photo opportunity.“It is a shame that the president stands with a Bible when he plans to act against his people,” Rouhani said.US President Donald Trump holds a Bible as he visits St. John’s Church near Lafayette Park across from the White House in Washington, June 1, 2020. (AP/Patrick Semansky)-Iranian officials regularly take advantage of protests in the US to criticize the administration, even though Iran itself in November put down nationwide demonstrations by killing hundreds, arresting thousands and disrupting internet access.Iranian state television has repeatedly aired images of the US unrest. The comment came a day after Iran’s supreme leader said Floyd’s killing shows the “true face” of the United States and its oppression of the peoples of the world, including its own.“The fact that a policeman has cold-bloodedly pressed his knee on the throat of a black man until he died and that other policemen watched on without doing anything is nothing knew,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech.Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addresses the nation in a televised speech marking the anniversary of the 1989 death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, in Tehran, Iran, June 3, 2020. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-“It is the true face of America, it’s what it has always done all over the world — in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and other countries, and before that in Vietnam. It is the normal course of action of the United States, it’s the true face of their regime,” Khamenei said.“These are realities that have always been camouflaged or hidden, but they are not new,” he said in a speech on the 31st anniversary of the death of his predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.Protests sparked by Floyd’s killing by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have raged across the United States for a week and US President Donald Trump has ordered the military to intervene. The once-in-a-generation unrest has coincided with the world’s deadliest coronavirus outbreak in the United States.US demonstrators, who had gathered to protest the death of George Floyd, begin to run fromtear gas used by police to clear the street near the White House in Washington, Monday, June 1, 2020. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)-Epidemiologists have voiced concern that the thousands of people protesting at close quarters, coughing violently when hit by police tear gas, will lead to a new upsurge in infections.“Thank God, (US leaders) have already been discredited by their actions — their handling of the coronavirus has discredited and shamed them around the world,” Khamenei said of the 106,000 deaths from COVID-19 already registered in the United States.Iran had itself faced strong criticism from the US when it was reeling from one of the world’s highest COVID-19 death tolls earlier this year.As of Wednesday, Iran’s health ministry declared a total of 8,012 deaths, although that figure has been dismissed by some as under-reported, including by Washington.Tensions between Tehran and Washington escalated sharply in 2018, after Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from a landmark nuclear agreement and reimposed crippling sanctions.

DC paints huge Black Lives Matter mural near White House-[Associated Press]-BEN FOX-June 5, 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — City workers and activists painted the words Black Lives Matter in enormous bright yellow letters on the street leading to the White House, a highly visible sign of the District of Columbia's embrace of a protest movement that has put it at odds with President Donald Trump.D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted aerial video of the mural shortly after it was completed Friday. The letters and an image of the city's flag stretch across 16th Street for two blocks, ending just before the church where Trump staged a photo-op after federal officers forcibly cleared a peaceful demonstration to make way for the president and his entourage.“The section of 16th street in front of the White House is now officially ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza,’” Bowser tweeted. A black and white sign was put up to mark the change.Bowser's endorsement of the project follows her verbal clashes with the Trump administration over the response to protests of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Bowser has complained about the heavy-handed federal response and called for the removal of out-of-state National Guard troops. She says their differences highlight the need for D.C. to be a state and have more control over its internal affairs.n Thursday, as the protests turned peaceful, she ended a curfew imposed after people damaged buildings and broke into businesses over the weekend and Monday. The mayor also tweeted out a letter from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who wrote the president to express alarm that peaceful protesters were being confronted by heavily armed federal agents and officers, many of them with their identities and agencies obscured.

Settler leader says annexation plan like being forced to eat cake at gunpoint-The Times of Israel-Other settler chiefs said calling for his resignation-Day after coming under fire for criticizing Trump, David Elhayani says he has a duty to speak out against what he sees as an ‘existential threat’ posed by the US peace proposal-By TOI staff-Today, 2:44 pm

A top settler leader on Thursday compared the pressure from Washington and Jerusalem to accept the Trump Administration’s peace plan to being force-fed cake on pain of severe bodily harm.Jordan Valley Regional Council head David Elhyani has been leading settler opposition to the US plan, which includes annexation of wide swaths of the West Bank but leaves open the possibility of a Palestinian state.Speaking to Army Radio a day after being rebuked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for speaking out against the plan, Elhayani said he had no choice but to warn Israel about what he sees as a dangerous proposal.“If someone comes to me with a cake while holding a gun to my head will I just take some cake and then say goodbye?” he said. “My duty is to save us from the existential threats.”Elhayani, who chairs the Yesha umbrella council of settlement mayors, rebuffed accusations that he was being ungrateful to Washington as it offers to recognize sovereignty, telling the station he was concerned not just for the safety of Israeli settlements in the Jordan Valley or other areas of the West Bank, but for the safety of all of Israel’s citizens. His comments have prompted some other settler leaders to call for his resignation, Channel 13 reported, with an internal Whatsapp group of settler chiefs featuring several bitter criticisms of his comments and and accusations that he was “humiliating” the settlers.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, and US ambassador to Israel David Friedman stand next to the dedication plaque at the US embassy in Jerusalem on March 21, 2019. (Jim Young/Pool/AFP)-Elhayani also doubled down on his remarks about President Donald Trump from the day before, in which he told the Haaretz daily that Trump and his senior adviser Jared Kushner have shown through their peace proposal that “they are not friends of the State of Israel.”While he conceded there was no doubt that Trump has “done wonderful things for Israel,” such as moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing Israeli sovereignty over Golan, and acting against the Iranians, the establishment of a Palestinian state is, Elhayani said, unacceptable. If Trump wants to establish a Palestinian state near the heart of Israel, between Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, he said, addressing the US president, “then you are not a friend.”Such a state, he stressed, “is a danger to Israel.”Elhayani warned that as soon as Israel extended sovereignty to some areas it would effectively be recognizing the borders of a future Palestinian state and that Washington intended to build on that development to implement the rest of the peace plan.“It is a plan for division [of the territory],” he said.“We must not give any chance for the establishment of a Palestinian state,” he said, and clarified that he was prepared to give up on Israeli sovereignty over some areas of the West Bank if it meant preventing a Palestinian state.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. left, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, center, and then-Tourism Minister Yariv Levin during a meeting to discuss mapping extension of Israeli sovereignty to areas of the West Bank, held in the Ariel settlement, February 24, 2020. (David Azagury/US Embassy Jerusalem)-Elhayani’s comments to Haaretz had drawn harsh rebuke from Netanyahu and other right-wing leaders.“I strongly condemn the words of the Yesha Council chairman,” Netanyahu said in a statement that insisted that “President Trump is a great friend of the State of Israel.”“President Trump’s vision for peace includes [a requirement of the Palestinians] to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Israeli security control throughout the territory west of Jordan, a unified Jerusalem, the disarming of Hamas, ending the right of return [for Palestinian] refugees to enter Israel, and more,” he said. Hamas is a Palestinian terror group that rules in the Gaza Strip.“It is unfortunate that, instead of gratitude, there is someone who is trying to deny this friendship, which has never been better,” Netanyahu added.Netanyahu’s comments echo what one settler leader told The Times of Israel had been the message relayed to him by American officials. He said Washington had been disappointed by the “ingratitude” demonstrated by West Bank mayors campaigning against the peace plan.An Israeli-US mapping committee has for the past several months has been working to delineate the exact parts of the West Bank territory over which Washington is prepared to recognize Israeli sovereignty.Elhayani and nearly a dozen other settler leaders have been insisting on seeing the map before it is finalized in order to influence how the borders will be drawn. They have taken particular issue with the conceptual map introduced at the Trump plan’s January unveiling in Washington, which depicted 15 isolated Israeli settlements as enclaves surrounded by land earmarked for the future Palestinian state. The Palestinians have rejected the entire Trump plan outright.A Palestinian shepherd herds his flock near the Israeli settlement of Argaman, in the Jordan Valley, a strip of West Bank land along the border with Jordan, Monday, Dec. 26, 2016. (AP Photo/Oded Balilty)-Separately Wednesday, another prominent settler leader, who asked not to be named, told The Times of Israel that he and his colleagues are prepared to “blow up” Netanyahu’s plan to annex their towns in the West Bank if the premier persists in refusing to share the joint US-Israeli committee’s map.The US administration is highly unlikely to approve an Israeli move to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank by the July 1 date envisioned by Netanyahu, a well-placed source told The Times of Israel on Wednesday. In fact, it could take weeks and possibly months before the joint US-Israel mapping committee concludes its work, which the White House has declared a precondition that must be met before it would give a green light for annexation, the source said.

Israeli pilgrims visit Nablus shrine despite end of PA security cooperation-The Times of Israel-No irregular incidents reported as 150 people take part in monthly prayer service at Joseph’s Tomb inside Palestinian-controlled area-By TOI staff-june 4,20-Today, 11:29 am

Some 150 Israelis overnight Wednesday visited Joseph’s Tomb, a holy site located inside an area of the West Bank under full Palestinian control, despite the Palestinian Authority declaring last month that it was ending all security cooperation with Israel. The pilgrims were escorted, as usual, by Israeli soldiers, the military said. The Israel Defense Forces said there were “no irregular incidents” during the visit and prayer service, the first held there since February. There were, however, light clashes nearby between Palestinian rioters, who threw rocks, and IDF troops, who responded with less lethal riot dispersal weapons.Palestinian security forces who protect the compound, just outside Nablus, left the site before the Israeli group arrived and then returned ten minutes after they had gone, the Ynet website reported. They arrived just in time to prevent a group of Palestinians from setting fire to the building, the report said.Near monthly visits to the tomb by Israelis are permitted by the IDF and are carried out under heavy armed guard. The visit was the first since the end of Israel’s strict coronavirus restrictions and the first since Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas announced he was ending security cooperation with Israel, though questions have arisen over the extent to which coordination has actually been frozen.PA President Mahmoud Abbas heads a leadership meeting at his headquarters, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, May 19, 2020. (Alaa Badarneh/Pool via AP)On May 21, Abbas declared that the PA was “absolved” of all agreements and understandings with Israel and the US. Abbas said his statement was in response to repeated Israeli violations of those agreements, including the planned unilateral annexation of parts of the West Bank by Israel, and that his security forces were cutting ties with the Israeli military. The claim has since proven to be overstated, as some degree of coordination has continued despite the dramatic announcement, though to a lesser extent than normal.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted he will go ahead with plans to extend Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley — some 30 percent of the West Bank — from July 1.The move would be coordinated with the United States, in accordance with a Middle East plan US President Donald Trump unveiled in January, which endorsed extending Israeli sovereignty over these parts of the West Bank. However, there are signs a short delay might be in the offing.US approval depends on the completion of a mapping process being carried out by a joint Israeli-US team, and a source has told The Times of Israel that it is “highly unlikely” that the process will be done by July 1. The source said it could be delayed by weeks or even months. In addition, European countries, as well as Arab nations with which Israel does not have formal ties, have also warned Israel against the consequences of annexation. The Palestinians have rejected the entire Trump peace proposal.Thousands of religious Jews visit the Joseph’s Tomb holy site in the West Bank city of Nablus on September 17, 2018. (Israel Defense Forces)-Joseph’s Tomb is located inside Area A of the West Bank, which is officially under complete Palestinian Authority control, though the Israeli military conducts activities there. The IDF bars Israeli citizens from entering Area A without prior authorization. The site is venerated by Jews, Christians and Muslims, and has often been a flashpoint for sectarian violence. Jewish pilgrims are usually only allowed to visit the tomb once a month under heavy armed guard. During these visits, Palestinians routinely throw rocks at the troops, and sometimes attack them with Molotov cocktails and gunfire.Visits to the site, which in the past have drawn over 1,000 pilgrims, were halted after February due to lockdown measures banning public gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. As infection rates dwindled, many restrictions have lifted.Screenshot from the fire started by Palestinian rioters at Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, in the West Bank, on October 16, 2015.In 2015 a large group of Palestinians set fire to the compound containing Joseph’s Tomb. Palestinian Authority security forces dispersed the hundred-strong crowd and managed to douse the fire at the tomb, believed to contain the remains of the biblical patriarch Joseph, Hebrew media reported at the time. There have been other incidents of arson and vandalism at the site, including major damage by Palestinian rioters in 2000.Earlier this week, an Israeli court convicted a former Palestinian police officer for opening fire in 2011 on a group of Israelis who had visited the site without coordination. 13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Serbia adopts anti-Semitism definition including anti-Israel hate-The Times of Israel-Education Ministry website says International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition will provide a practical guide for identifying and collecting data on anti-Semitic incidents-By Cnaan Liphshiz-june 5,20-Today, 11:26 am

JTA — The Education Ministry of Serbia has added to its website a definition of anti-Semitism that includes some examples of hatred against Israel. The ministry uploaded the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, or IHRA, to the site on April 30.On Monday, the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade offered its congratulations on Twitter to the Serbian government “for adopting the IHRA definition.”Serbia is a close ally of Russia, which has not adopted the definition.Eleven countries have been said to adopt the definition. In France, the adoption was put to a vote, which was passed in December. In the United Kingdom, the government announced in 2016 that it was adopting the measure. The definition states that some forms of vitriol against Israel, including comparing it to Nazi Germany and denying the Jewish people’s right to self determination, are examples of anti-Semitism, though criticizing Israel’s policies is not.“The purpose of this document is to provide a practical guide for identifying and collecting data on anti-Semitic incidents,” the Serbian Education Ministry’s website reads.Pro-Palestinian activists oppose the IHRA definition, claiming it prevents criticism of Israel’s policies or unduly limits free speech. The definition features mostly examples of anti-Semitic behaviors unconnected to Israel, such as calling to harm Jews or denying the Holocaust.Manifestations of anti-Semitism, the new definition reads, “might include the targeting of the State of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity,” though “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic.”

Iraq’s Jewish sites almost all ruined beyond repair, new heritage report finds-The Times of Israel-Urgent relief could save 4 of Iraq's most vital Jewish sites-More than half sites in Syria also in terrible condition or worse; neglect and redevelopment blamed, after repression and emigration decimated Jewish life in the 2 countries-By Robert Philpot-june 5,20-Today, 4:08 pm

The location and condition of over 350 Jewish heritage sites in Iraq and Syria have been identified by a major new research project. But most of them are said to be ruined or nearly so, often because of neglect or redevelopment work. The 18-month study conducted by the Jewish Cultural Heritage Initiative (JCHI) catalogues and assesses sites from antiquity to the present day in once-vibrant centers of Jewish life in the Middle East. But an accompanying report published this month warns that nearly 90 percent of the sites in Iraq – and more than half of those in Syria – are beyond repair or in a very bad condition. It also identifies four Iraqi sites where it believes “emergency relief” could be critical to preserving them. They include the last functioning synagogue in the country and a Baghdad cemetery where the remains of Jews who were publicly hanged in the 1960s on charges of spying for Israel are buried. The JCHI is a collaboration between the London-based Foundation for Jewish Heritage and the American Schools of Oriental Research. The study was led by Dr. Darren Ashby and Dr. Susan Penacho of the US institution’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives. The research team used desk-based, satellite and on-the-ground assessments.Jewish community life in Iraq and Syria – which stretched back 2,600 years to the time of Babylon – was decimated by harsh repression and emigration in the second half of the 20th century, following the establishment of the State of Israel. However, the JCHI study argues that “a significant physical heritage remains.”Mosul, Iraq, synagogue as seen in a France 24 report from April 2019. (Youtube still)-The condition of the sites varies sharply between Iraq and Syria. In Iraq, researchers gave 89% of sites its lowest preservation rating of “no return” or determined that nothing definite could be found on its present state. The researchers believe the overwhelming majority of heritage sites classified as “no information” are likely to be in a very bad condition or beyond repair. In Syria, 53% of sites are tagged as “no return” or “no information.”Of the 11% confirmed as still standing in Iraq, nine sites are categorized as “poor” and 12% as “very bad”, the researchers say. Ten sites are listed as in a “fair” or “good” condition.”In Syria, 27 sites are tagged as being in a “fair” of “good” condition, while six are categorized as “poor” or “very bad.”In all, 68 Iraqi sites are deemed as “no return” and no information was available for 198 sites. In Syria, the respective figures were 32 sites and six sites. An undated image of Al-Bandara Synagogue or Central Synagogue of Aleppo, Syria. (public domain via Wikipedia)-“A distinct difference in preservation exists between Iraq and Syria,” argues the report. It notes that the 10 Iraq sites rated as “good” or “fair” represent “roughly a third the number of Syrian sites, despite the overall size of the Iraqi corpus being over three times the size of the Syrian one.”But, across both countries, says the report, “most of the heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries is in very bad condition or beyond repair, primarily due to neglect and urban redevelopment.”Researchers say that the project was “undertaken in a challenging environment” and admit that it does not represent “a fully comprehensive picture.” However, the 368 sites in the JCHI database, suggests the report, “represent a cross-section of Jewish built heritage in Iraq and Syria from the diaspora until the present day.”“The database includes the major buildings and settlements in both countries alongside a number of additional sites of regional and local significance,” it says.“At a time when there is so much attention on saving heritage in danger across the Middle East, this unique research has shone a light on a forgotten aspect – the remarkable ancient Jewish heritage of the region,” Michael Mail, chief executive of the Foundation for Jewish Heritage, suggested in a press statement. The Jewish community made a profound contribution and we need to ensure its heritage, and this story, is not erased“The Jewish community made a profound contribution and we need to ensure its heritage, and this story, is not erased,” Mail added. The research lists 27 sites in both Iraq and Syria which are endangered because they are in a “poor” or “very bad” condition.Among the sites are two in Syria – the Bandara Synagogue in Aleppo and the Synagogue of the Prophet Elijah in Damascus – and one in Iraq – The Shrine of the Prophet Ezekiel in Al-Kifl – which researchers assess to be internationally significant. A further seven are listed as nationally significant and four regionally significant. The project identifies four sites as priority candidates for “emergency relief.” All are in Iraq due to the continuing Syrian civil war. In the case of each, the JCHI says, “urgent intervention could substantially improve their condition.”In this 1998 file photo, Tawfiq Safeer prepares for prayer in the synagogue of Baghdad, Saturday, March 21, 1998. (AP Photo/Jassim Mohammed)-The four sites are led by the last surviving functioning synagogue in Iraq, the Meir Tweig Synagogue in Baghdad. The synagogue, says the report, is also home to material from other synagogues and communal buildings that are now closed. The Jewish community in Iraq is now believed to number as few as 10, mostly elderly, people. Through intermediaries in Iraq, the JCHI was able to make contact with members of the Jewish community in Baghdad. The Meir Tweig Synagogue in Baghdad, seen behind a wall in Baghdad, Iraq on August 7, 2007. (AP Photo/Hadi Mizban)-Work on the synagogue, which is deemed to be in a “fair” condition, is “highly viable,” researchers believe.“The site is under the control of the Jewish community, which already has a list of preferred contractors that it has worked with on other projects,” the report says. But, it adds, “the main concern for the Jewish community is visibility. They do not want to draw attention to the synagogue’s location.”In this 1969 file photo: Sabah Haim and David Hazaquiel, both Jewish businessmen, after they had been hanged in Baghad, Iraq, on January 27, 1969, for being Israeli spies. (AP)-The three other priority sites selected by the JCHI include the Al-Habibiyah Jewish Cemetery in Baghdad. Established during the early 20th century, it has been the main location for Jewish burial in the city. Many local Jewish notables are interred there, including Jews who were publicly hanged in Baghdad in January 1969 for allegedly spying for Israel. The report says the cemetery is in a worse condition than the Meir Tweig synagogue. “The interior of the walled property is overgrown with vegetation in multiple places and the space is used as a dumping ground for trash by people on the adjacent properties. Many of the graves are in poor condition,” it notes. In northern Iraq, the research highlights two candidates for urgent work in an area of the country where significant post-conflict reconstruction work is underway.Mosul, Iraq, synagogue as seen in a France 24 report from April 2019. (Youtube still)-+Built in 1902, the Sasson Synagogue in Mosul was the main synagogue in the city during the 20th century thanks to its central location in the Jewish Quarter. Researchers believe that, though it is in a “very bad” condition, it is nonetheless the best-preserved Jewish heritage in Mosul.“The roof of the synagogue has collapsed in multiple places, exposing the interior decoration, including wall paintings, to weathering and increasing the risk that the rest of the standing architecture will fall,” write the researchers. “The property has also filled with trash and debris deposited in the building over the past decades. Further, looters have targeted the site, removing some Jewish cultural property.” .. Sassoon Synagogue in Mosul-Sasson Synagogue(The last synagogue in Mosul out of 5 existed until the mid-seventies)Plot No. 186/2 – Jewish neighbourhood. The outer entrance is located at the corner of the south-eastern building and the entrance is reduced by 1.5 m from the straightness of the alley. (2 × 1.2 m), which is also reduced by 0.50 m from the wall of the exterior facade and has an iron door with two modern-made signs. In the middle of the 1970s, after the last Jews of Mosul left, it has occupied by a neighbor, in the mid-1980s and with a decision by the Revolutionary Command Council to liquidate the property of Iraq's absentee Jews, the school and the synagogue were sold to the family it occupies and it's a private propety now.Gilgamesh Center for Antiquities and Heritage Protect-Forty-five kilometers (28 miles) north of Mosul lies the Shrine of the Prophet Nahum in the town of in al-Qosh in Iraq. It dates back to at least the 12th century CE and was an important pilgrimage site for the Jewish community of both Mosul and the surrounding region, especially during Shavuot. The site consists of a central synagogue with the prophet’s tomb and a series of subsidiary buildings arranged around a courtyard.Tomb of the Jewish Prophet Nahum in Al-qosh, Iraq. (Chaldean, CC-BY-SA, via wikipedia)-Local Christians attempted to maintain the shrine after the departure of the Jewish community and it has also been the focus of international preservation efforts over the past decade. It is now deemed to be in a “poor” condition. However, after stabilization work was conducted in late 2017, a restoration project led by the Alliance for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage is commencing. It is supported financially by the US government, the Kurdish regional government and private donors. The researchers believe that, while many factors account for the higher levels of preservation in Syria than Iraq, “two interconnected factors stand out: government policy towards the Jewish population and the timing of Jewish emigration from the two countries.”In both Syria and Iraq, anti-Semitic violence and state repression provoked large-scale Jewish emigration following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.FILE – This Sunday, April 20, 2008, file photo, Syrian Jews celebrate Passover at the al-Firenj Synagogue in downtown Damascus, Syria. (AP Photo/Bassem Tellawi, File). For those Jews who remained in Syria “the level of repression fluctuated over time” and, by the mid-1970s, they were “largely left to manage their own religious, social and economic affairs.” However, tight restrictions on Jewish emigration were in place until the early 1990s.In Iraq, emigration was similarly restricted and banned altogether in 1952. But further emigration was allowed some 20 years earlier than in Syria, with much of the remaining Jewish community leaving the country in the early 1970s.“The different levels of repression and timelines of community departure impacted the preservation of Jewish built heritage,” says the report. “In Syria, a portion of the community was forcibly kept in the country but maintained a degree of control over communal property, particularly synagogues.”FILE – This Friday, January 21, 2000, file photo, Youssef Jajati, a Jewish community leader in Syria, points out the Torah holy book preserved in a silver container in Joubar’s Synagogue which dates back to 718 BCE. (AP Photo/ Bassem Tellawi, File)-Even with the departure of much of the remaining Jewish community after 1992, however, the Syrian government continued to preserve sites for its own political purposes. This, the report argues, led to “the protection of Jewish heritage in the major cities of Damascus and Aleppo despite the absence of a Jewish community dedicated to their preservation.”The picture in Iraq, the researchers continue, was somewhat different. “Nearly all Iraqi Jews left Iraq by the mid-1970s and most communal Iraqi Jewish built heritage passed into the control of the Iraqi state, which neglected it, repurposed it, or passed it on to private individuals for their own use or redevelopment.“As a result, most Iraqi heritage has deteriorated significantly, been substantially modified, or been torn down completely,” state the authors.

US streets calmest in days as looting tapers off, most protests peaceful-The Times of Israel-Demonsttors break curfews across the county but mainly avoid clashes with police in marked deescalation after days of rioting-By Zeke Miller and Tim Sullivan-june 3,20-Today, 2:06 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Protests were largely peaceful and America’s streets were calmer than they have been in days since the killing of George Floyd set off demonstrations that at times brought violence and destruction along with pleas to stop police brutality and injustice against African Americans. There were scattered reports of looting in New York City overnight, and as of Wednesday morning there had been over 9,000 arrests nationwide since the unrest began following Floyd’s death May 25 in Minneapolis. But there was a marked quiet compared with the unrest of the past few nights, which included fires and shootings in some cities. The calmer night came as many cities intensified their curfews, with authorities in New York and Washington ordering people off streets while it was still daylight.A block away from the White House, thousands of demonstrators massed following a crackdown a day earlier when officers on foot and horseback aggressively drove peaceful protesters away from Lafayette Park, clearing the way for US President Donald Trump to do a photo op at nearby St. John’s Church. Tuesday’s protesters faced law enforcement personnel who stood behind a black chain-link fence that was put up overnight to block access to the park.“Last night pushed me way over the edge,” said Jessica DeMaio, 40, of Washington, who attended a Floyd protest Tuesday for the first time. “Being here is better than being at home feeling helpless.”With the White House in the background, a line of police forms behind a fence in Lafayette Park as demonstrators gather to protest the death of George Floyd, June 2, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)-Pastors at the church prayed with demonstrators and handed out water bottles. The crowd remained in place after the city’s 7 p.m. curfew passed, defying warnings that the response from law enforcement could be even more forceful. But the crowd Tuesday was peaceful, even polite. At one point, the crowd booed when a protester climbed a light post and took down a street sign. A chant went up: “Peaceful protest!”Trump, meanwhile, amplified his hard-line calls from Monday, when he threatened to send in the military to restore order if governors didn’t do it.“NYC, CALL UP THE NATIONAL GUARD,” he tweeted. “The lowlifes and losers are ripping you apart. Act fast!”Thousands of people remained in the streets of New York City Tuesday night, undeterred by an 8 p.m. curfew, though most streets were clear by early Wednesday other than police who were patrolling some areas. Midtown Manhattan was pocked with battered storefronts after Monday’s protests.Protesters kneel in Times Square in New York, June 2, 2020. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)-Protests also passed across the US, including in Los Angeles, Miami, St. Paul, Minnesota, Columbia, South Carolina and Houston, where the police chief talked to peaceful demonstrators, vowing reforms.“God as my witness, change is coming,” Art Acevedo said. “And we’re going to do it the right way.”More than 20,000 National Guard members have been called up in 29 states to deal with the violence. New York is not among them, and Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he does not want the Guard. On Tuesday, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo called what happened in the city “a disgrace.”“The NYPD and the mayor did not do their job last night,” Cuomo said at a briefing in Albany. He said the mayor underestimated the problem, and the nation’s largest police force was not deployed in sufficient numbers, though the city had said it doubled the usual police presence.George Floyd. (Christopher Harris via AP)-Tuesday marked the eighth straight night of the protests, which began after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck while the handcuffed black man called out that he couldn’t breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been fired and charged with murder. The mother of George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, said she wanted the world to know that her little girl lost a good father.“I want everybody to know that this is what those officers took,” Roxie Washington said during a Minneapolis news conference with her young daughter at her side. “I want justice for him because he was good. No matter what anybody thinks, he was good.”Some protesters framed the burgeoning movement as a necessity after a string of killings by police.“It feels like it’s just been an endless cascade of hashtags of black people dying, and it feels like nothing’s really being done by our political leaders to actually enact real change,” said Christine Ohenzuwa, 19, who attended a peaceful protest at the Minnesota state Capitol in St. Paul. “There’s always going to be a breaking point. I think right now, we’re seeing the breaking point around the country.”“I live in this state. It’s really painful to see what’s going on, but it’s also really important to understand that it’s connected to a system of racial violence,” she said.Ddemonstrators stand in front of Los Angeles City Hall during a protest over the death of George Floyd, June 2, 2020, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)-Meanwhile, governors and mayors, Republicans and Democrats alike, rejected Trump’s threat to send in the military, with some saying troops would be unnecessary and others questioning whether the government has such authority and warning that such a step would be dangerous.A senior White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the president is not rushing to send in the military and that his goal was to pressure governors to deploy more National Guard members.Such use of the military would mark a stunning federal intervention rarely seen in modern American history.Amid the protests, nine states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries that tested the nation’s ability to run elections while balancing a pandemic and sweeping social unrest. Joe Biden won hundreds more delegates and was on the cusp of formally securing the Democratic presidential nomination. Also Tuesday, Minnesota opened an investigation into whether the Minneapolis Police Department has a pattern of discrimination against minorities.

Coronavirus pandemic is fast-tracking a health-tech revolution, expert says-The Times of Israel-Interview-The ‘floodgates are now open’ and regulators, patients and healthcare providers are all going with the flow, according to Yair Schindel of aMoon VC fundBy Shoshanna Solomon-june 3,20-Today, 12:42 pm

The coronavirus pandemic has fast tracked the merger of high tech with the health sector, leading to a health-tech revolution that will come about much faster than it would have otherwise, a venture capital fund expert said.“We have a new normal,” said Yair Schindel, managing partner and co-founder of aMoon, a global HealthTech VC fund based in Israel, in an interview with The Times of Israel. “The world has changed dramatically,”Schindel was part of a team of experts set up by the  Health Ministry to develop guidelines on minimizing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed over 377,000 people and infected over 6.3 million. In Israel the death toll from the virus has reached 289, with over 17,000 people infected. Thanks to the virus, the timeline of the ongoing health-tech revolution has now shortened “quite dramatically,” he said. “We will see changes happening significantly faster than we originally anticipated.”Dr. Yair Schindel co-founder and managing partner of VC fund aMoon (Tomer Jacobson)-This revolution is now happening on a number of fronts, he explained, the first one being the patients themselves. For many years everything that had to do with remote healthcare and telemedicine was difficult for many patients to accept, he said. They felt they needed the doctors to see them, to examine their lungs, their hearts, their throat.“All these things today, in the mind of the patient, are no longer a necessity,” he said. Not only do patients today accept being treated from afar, they actually prefer it in order to avoid the risk of catching something at the doctor’s office.Technologies that facilitate remote treatment have helped bridge this psychological gap for patients in general. “That is a huge step forward,” Schindel said. The “hospital room of the future,” built in the Israel Center for Medical Simulation at Sheba Medical Center (courtesy of Sheba Medical Center)-Earlier this month, Sheba Medical Center, at the forefront of Israel’s fight against COVID-19, unveiled what it called the “hospital of the future” – in which robots, AI and augmented reality do much of the work while doctors and nurses stay at a distance. Sheba has also utilized the Vici telemedicine system, a robot-like device that monitors patients’ vital signs.Other systems include Tytocare, which allows physicians to remotely examine patients using stethoscopes, thermometers, and lung monitoring, and EarlySense, for the real-time delivery of actionable data along with patient data management tools that allow physicians to pinpoint and prevent potentially serious medical situations before they escalate. Not only patients changed their frame of mind, said Schindel. Regulators, both in the US and Europe, “understand they have to move a lot faster,” he said.“Obviously, we don’t want to put patients at risk, but if we can accelerate the process of approval for things that are safe and efficacious, we should do that as soon as possible,” he said. That is especially true for digital therapeutics, when software programs are used to prevent, manage or treat medical disorders, or when platforms are created to help analyze medical data and provide insights to physicians.“For a while we didn’t know how fast it would go forward. Now it is basically a flood, and the floodgates are now open,” he said, referring to both technologies that are are being developed faster and regulatory approvals.Tyto Care has developed a device for on-demand, remote medical exams. The handheld examination device has attachments that can examine the heart, lungs, skin, ears, throat and abdomen, as well as measure body temperature (YouTube screenshot)-Healthcare providers, too, have realized they need to make more use of devices and technology to treat patients at home, rather sending them unnecessarily to already jam-packed hospitals.Lastly, said Schindel, the genomics revolution that is taking place — what he calls the study of “the barcode with which we came into the world” — will further get a boost by the coronavirus pandemic.“All the large pharma companies and academic institutions are trying to figure out who is influenced by COVID-19 and who isn’t,” he said. “Who will have a mild or more serious disease? Is it related to certain types of genes, or actually to certain types of proteins that some of us have or don’t?” All of these questions will help advance genomics research, he said.Magen David Adom medical workers at a drive-through site to collect samples for coronavirus testing in Jerusalem on May 30, 2020 (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Schindel, who was recruited by the director general of the Health Ministry to join the task force early in the crisis, said that he believes Israel deserves a “very high grade” in its effort to keep the virus at bay because it quickly took stringent steps, and because citizens are well versed in going into and out of emergency mode. The ability to “quickly adapt and transition from routine day to day to emergency mode is a huge advantage of the Israeli people,” he said.“Suppose we were not as responsive as we were; we would have ended up with numbers like some of these European countries,” he said. According to Statista, Israel has had 31.97 deaths per million inhabitants, compared to 821.92 per million in Belgium, 580.41 per million in Spain ,569.07 per million in the UK and 548.42 per million in Italy.“Let’s say we knew there was a risk of some terror attack that could cause the loss of 3,000 lives and maybe another 20,000 injured or sick, via bioterror. What would the country do? Would we be willing to endure a month of lockup to avoid something like that? I think the answer is yes.”Israel has eased lockdown measures as the virus spread slowed, but a resurgence of infections has raised the specter of renewed restrictions.

Israel’s security chiefs to meet on looming annexation amid fears of violence-The Times of Israel-IDF, Shin Bet chiefs and top commanders to weigh how to respond to possible Palestinian uprising or Jordan breaking off ties, with a month to go to July 1 target dateBy Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-june 3,20-Today, 10:15 am

Security chiefs will convene Wednesday for a key discussion to prepare for various scenarios if parts of the West Bank are annexed next month, as currently planned.IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi will host Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman and several senior IDF commanders and Shin Bet officials at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv for a first-of-its-kind meeting on the subject, Hebrew-language media reported.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted he will go ahead with plans to extend Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley — some 30 percent of the West Bank — from July 1, though there are signs a short delay might be in the offing. That gives the military a month to complete preparations for a move that many defense analysts and officials have warned could lead to an outbreak of Palestinian violence, as well as threaten Jerusalem’s ties with its neighbor Jordan and other Arab countries. The preparations, given the code name “Shahar Beharim” (Dawn in the mountains) are clouded not only by limited knowledge of what Palestinians might be planning in response to an annexation announcement, but also by lack of information on what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government intends to announce. The discussion will focus on the different scenarios that may follow an Israeli move to annex, from so-called lone wolf attacks by Palestinians and protests, to mass riots, a full-blown third intifada — or uprising — or even an extreme option of the severance of all ties with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. The security chiefs will also discuss possible ramifications such an escalation could have on other fronts, particularly the Gaza Strip.Israeli soldiers stand guard near the scene of an apparent attempted car-ramming attack by the West Bank settlement of Halamish on May 29, 2020. (Abbas Momani/AFP)-Defense analysts have warned of a potential outbreak of violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in response to Israeli annexation efforts.Ahead of the move, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said his security forces were cutting ties with the Israeli military, a claim that has since proven to be overstated, as some degree of coordination has continued despite the dramatic announcement, though to a lesser extent than normal.Jordan, with which Israel has its longest border, has threatened to review its relationship with Jerusalem, if the Jewish state goes ahead with the controversial plans. On Tuesday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of “fiercer conflict” if annexation moves ahead.European countries, as well as Arab nations with which Israel does not have formal ties, have also warned Israel against the consequences of annexation.Israel’s military preparations have been going on for months and have included special training, preparing equipment and weapons, and tightening the military’s coordination with the Shin Bet and the Israel Police. They also include an examination of what body would be in charge of each area in the event of annexation, which would likely transfer some authority currently held by the Defense Ministry to civilian bodies. On Monday, Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered Kohavi to “step up preparations for the Israel Defense Forces,” his office said, after a meeting with US Ambassador David Friedman.Gantz himself is believed to oppose unilateral annexation, but his coalition deal with Netanyahu allows the latter to push forward with the plan from July 1, so long as he can secure approval from the Knesset — where he is almost guaranteed a majority — and from the United States. However, the US approval depends on the completion of a mapping process being carried out by a joint Israeli-US team, and a source has told The Times of Israel that it is “highly unlikely” that the process will be done by July 1. The source said it could be delayed by weeks or even months.Netanyahu initially promised in January that annexation would take place in a matter of days, but has repeatedly been forced to temper expectations.Though the military had already been preparing for potential unrest in response to the move, until Gantz’s meeting with Kohavi on Monday the IDF was doing so without having much specific information about the government’s intentions, aspects of which still remain undecided. In his statement, the defense minister did not explicitly refer to annexation, but ordered Kohavi to “step up preparations for the IDF ahead of diplomatic efforts on the agenda in the Palestinian arena.”A Palestinian rioter hurls a rock during clashes with Israeli security forces following a protest in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on January 29, 2020. (Musa AL SHAER / AFP)-“The defense minister also updated the chief of staff on advancements on the diplomatic front,” a spokesperson said, without elaborating.Gantz said he also plans to appoint a point-person to coordinate between the different government bodies involved in the process.“A joint team will be formed that will bring together recommendations — on an operational level — for the efforts that are on the agenda for the West Bank and Gaza Strip,” his office said. The move would be coordinated with the United States, in accordance with a Middle East plan US President Donald Trump unveiled in January, which endorsed extending Israeli sovereignty over these parts of the West Bank. While the plan calls for peace talks and envisions a Palestinian state on the rest of the West Bank, the entire proposal has been rejected by the Palestinian Authority, which seeks the West Bank as territory for a future Palestinian state. The government’s exact plans of when and where it intends to extend sovereignty have yet to be released and are still being discussed by the joint Israeli-US committee that is tasked with mapping the exact territory to be annexed and the status of each piece of land.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, September 10, 2019. Netanyahu vowed to annex the Jordan Valley and, later, all West Bank settlements if he were to win national elections. (AP Photo/Oded Balilty)-Last week, Netanyahu told government ministers that he planned to extend Israeli sovereignty to portions of the West Bank at some point in July.Ze’ev Elkin, a member of the top-level security cabinet, said an exact date had not yet been set because of the ongoing efforts of the joint mapping committee.“I know they’re working on the map, and that process could take some more time,” Elkin told Army Radio on Sunday. “July 1 is the first day when the matter can be brought to the cabinet and the Knesset. It could possibly take a few more days or weeks, but generally I think the prime minister is very clear that he intends to advance this.”Elkin said there were many signs that the mapping would be done by “sometime in July.”

Breaking China: A rupture looms between Israel and the United States-The Times of Israel-Analysis-As an American-Chinese power struggle ramps up, the Jewish state increasingly feels the fallout with US pressure to nix deals it deems detrimental to its security interests-By Ron Kampeas-JUNE 3,20-Today, 1:12 pm

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israel’s announcement last week that an Israeli consortium would build Sorek 2, the world’s largest desalination plant, surprised many who had been watching the deal: The contract had been expected to go to a Hong Kong-based company. But that was before the Trump administration ramped up pressure on Israel to diminish its ties to China. For years, Israel has been working to dramatically expand trade with China, one of the world’s largest markets. That push is suddenly running up against strong opposition from the White House, as the Trump administration pivots from the decades-old policy of increasing US engagement with China to treating the country as an increasingly bitter rival. The Sorek 2 deal was widely seen as a bow to pressure from the Trump administration, which is pushing Israel and other key allies to curtail trade with China. But observers of this deepening dynamic say it may not be enough to head off a US-Israel crisis over China.A Chinese company, SIPG, is building a major port in Haifa and will control it for 25 years. The Trump administration, according to multiple insiders, wants Israel to roll back at least part of that deal. The Israelis consider it a done deal, even if they may have regrets over it.“It’s a bit of a shock to the system,” Jonathan Schanzer, the vice president of a think tank, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, that has close ties with the Trump administration and with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said of the looming crisis. “We had been hearing from the administration officials and even some Israeli diplomats about some of the complications arising from the intensification of the great power competition between the US and China.”Illustrative: Shipping containers at the Haifa port. November 14, 2011. (Yaakov Naumi/Flash90.)-In mid-May, the Trump administration unveiled a 16-page revised approach for relating to China amid American fury with the Chinese for obfuscating the origins of the coronavirus and failing to contain the pandemic. The US has not publicly spelled out potential consequences for countries that do not go along with its anti-China push. But those with ties to both the Israeli and US government said there is a real risk of diminished security cooperation if Israel does not accede to American pressure to stringently review any commercial deals with China and nix those that might impinge on Israeli and US security interests.Doug Feith, a top Pentagon official under President George W. Bush who helped resolve the last US-Israel crisis over China — over Israel’s weapons sales to China in the mid-2000s — said the Trump administration was poised to act unless Israel took steps to alleviate US concerns.Feith pointed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s brief trip to Israel in mid-May — only his second visit abroad since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the United States — to make sure Jerusalem got the message. During his one-day visit, Pompeo openly accused China of “obfuscating” and “hiding” information related to the pandemic. (China’s ambassador to Israel responded by calling the accusations “absurd,” saying China “has never covered up the outbreak.” He died of an apparent heart attack in his apartment in Israel less than a week later.)Former US undersecretary of defense for policy Doug Feith. (Public domain)-Pompeo had warned Israel earlier in the month “that further Israeli economic linkage with China will hurt relations with the US,” Feith, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, wrote in a May 15 Wall Street Journal op-ed.In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Feith said he learned of Pompeo’s warning from Israeli and American officials. (Requests for comment from the State Department and from Israel’s embassy here were not returned.)-Israel is not alone, Feith said, noting similar recent warnings issued by Trump administration officials to Britain and Australia.“What the government is saying is that it applies to Israel in the same way that it would apply to other countries, including very close friends,” he said. Those warnings could rupture the close relationship between President Donald Trump and Netanyahu, who have been joined at the hip on policy and politics, ranging from Israel’s claims to territories won in the 1967 Six-Day War, to heightening confrontation with Iran, to disdain for the Democratic Party’s left wing.“This administration likely feels particularly empowered to have tachlis discussions with Israel about limitations since it [rightly] views itself as having provided Netanyahu and the last government with wall-to-wall support,” said Scott Lasensky, a visiting professor at the University of Maryland and an adviser on Israel policy to the Obama administration.A resolution to the crisis could sink in Haifa’s port-The biggest deal Israel has signed with a Chinese company was in December: The Shanghai International Port Group, or SIPG, is to build and operate a port in Haifa for 25 years. The agreement followed years of negotiations. The Trump administration wants controls in place to limit Chinese malfeasance, if not a complete abrogation of the deal. Breaking the contract is unlikely, as Israel does not want to risk alienating its trade relationship with China. Those ties, according to an analysis last year by the Rand Corp., a think tank that advises the Pentagon, was worth $8 billion in Chinese exports to Israel and $3 billion in Israeli exports to China in 2016.Illustrative: Shipping containers at the Haifa port. November 14, 2011. (photo credit: Yaakov Nahumi/Flash90)-Netanyahu has made his cultivation of ties with China a feather in his cap, and China has already warned Israel against acquiescing to “US bullying.”SIPG’s control of the port allows the Chinese intelligence-gathering proximity to Israeli naval bases, and to information that flows from the port, as well as the ability to frustrate access in an emergency.“Ports are high-tech,” Gary Roughead, a retired US Navy admiral who last year co-authored with Feith a Hudson Institute report on US-Israel cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean, said in an interview. Port operators “have control systems and the data that goes with it.”Roughead said that could give China eyes into Israeli-US communications and, more broadly, into Israel’s military, which would raise concerns for its allies.“It would be important to know, do [Israel’s] security services have access to the port to monitor for the capabilities that are focused on your naval base, is that allowed, or does Shanghai say, ‘No, you can’t sweep the port, or peer into the types of activity or intercept the communications,’” he said.Cranes at Haifa’s port (photo credit: Moshe Shai/Flash90)-Other concerns Roughead noted: US military vessels that stop in Haifa for servicing and whether China would be able to intervene in US assistance to Israel during a military crisis.Feith said that Israeli officials have endeavored to reassure Americans that they have checks in place at the port, but the Americans remain wary.Shaul Chorev, a retired rear admiral in the Israeli Navy and a co-author with Feith and Roughead of the Hudson Institute report, said the port deal was a mistake on national security grounds, but Israel was not about to substantially retreat.“If Israel goes to China and says let’s roll back, we will lose face, we will lose our economic relations,” said Chorev, who directs the Haifa Research Center for Maritime Policy and Strategy. The crisis has come on suddenly-Until around 2018, few in Israel or the United States saw this crisis coming. Dealing with China, with its deep pockets and resources, had been a no-brainer across the planet for years. Its Belt and Road initiative, bringing infrastructure on the cheap to developing countries, is transforming Africa. But then some critics began to claim that Chinese information technology companies were allowing China’s government to spy on countries that use their cellular technology. And Beijing also began facing claims that it was using Belt and Road to squeeze diplomatic concessions from participating countries. In 2018, Trump administration officials began to aggressively warn allies against deals with China. Lawmakers from both parties have issued similar warnings.Former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro attends at a farewell session at the Knesset ahead of his departure from the role on January 17, 2017. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Those concerns were simply not on anyone’s radar in 2015, said Daniel Shapiro, then the US ambassador to Israel. Yisrael Katz, then Israel’s transportation minister, approached Shapiro seeking US contractors to redo Haifa’s port. That never eventuated, in part because the project was seen as too small by US contractors, so Israel turned to the Shanghai International Port Group.“They went ahead with their process, they signed a deal with the firm,” Shapiro said. “No one in the US government — not in the Navy, not in the Defense Department — called me and said ‘Hey, we have a problem.’”A renewed process to vet Israel’s international deals-Last year, Israel launched a foreign investment review board at the behest of John Bolton, then Trump’s national security adviser and one of Israel’s closest-ever friends in US government. The goal of the board is to ensure that agreements are vetted with national security concerns in mind — and avoid a situation like the Haifa port deal, where negotiations took place for several years, yet parts of Israel’s security establishment were caught off-guard by the agreement. The review board is seen as feckless and ineffectual, in part because it was formed under Israel’s interim government and lacked a mandate. Now that Netanyahu has set up a government, the Americans expect him to strengthen the mechanism.Illustrative: US President Donald Trump speaks during a roundtable discussion on the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act at the White House on August 23, 2018. (AFP Photo/Mandel Ngan)-“The first thing that Israel should do for its own sake, even if America and China were not on this collision path, is to have a real foreign investment screening mechanism,” said Shira Efron, a visiting fellow at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies who co-authored the 2019 Rand report.Efron said the mechanism should be legislated — the committee last year was a Cabinet decision — which would give it the power to compel compliance. Its scope should be extended to the technological sector, she said, and it should be an independent entity. The Israeli government should make clear that strengthening the mechanism is in Israel’s interest and not at the behest of the United States, Efron added.“If it’s in response to US pressure, it’s insulting to China,” she said. It’s not about 5G-Trump administration officials have formally warned Britain and Australia that allowing Huawei, the Chinese communications giant, to help establish 5G communications networks in their countries would adversely affect intelligence sharing. The US, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network.Democrats and Republicans alike see Chinese communications companies as arms of China’s intelligence network.Illustrative: A police robot mounted with surveillance cameras watches people walking past a 5G network advertisement in a shopping district in Beijing, Wednesday, May 15, 2019. (AP/Andy Wong)-There were concerns last year that Israel was considering similar contracts, but Israel has put them to rest, said a March report by Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies.“In view of the absence of Chinese technology from previous generations of communications infrastructure in Israel, and despite the lack of clear official announcements by the Israeli government on the matter, the likelihood of its 5G infrastructure being built with Chinese technology is low to nonexistent,” the report said. But there’s a lot more to talk about-China has been building infrastructure in Israel since at least 2007, when the China Civil Engineering Construction Corp. brought in 300 workers to build the tunnel system linking the southern entrance to Haifa with the suburbs to the city’s north. That success has led to a thirst for Chinese construction, and there was talk of China building new rail links in Israel. China’s Bright Food Group owns a controlling stake in Tnuva, Israel’s preeminent dairy.Decoupling from China won’t be easy. And China appears prepared to place its own pressure on Israel. After Pompeo’s visit last month, the Chinese embassy’s spokesman declared that his country trusted that its “Jewish friends are not only able to defeat the coronavirus but also the ‘political virus,’ and choose the course of action that best serves their interests.”Illustrative: A view of the Sorek A Desalination Plant, November 22, 2018. (Isaac Harari/Flash90)-Still, Israel’s willingness last week to cut China out of the Sorek 2 desalination deal shows it is ready to roll back engagement on some fronts. The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies released a paper last month outlining how to avert a deeper crisis. Its recommendation: “The United States should work with Israel and other allies to facilitate alternatives to help Israel pivot away from China.“Other Indo-Pacific countries, such as Japan, Canada, India, Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan, already invest in Israel and may be eager to increase their engagement to replace Chinese investment,” the paper said. There are other spheres in which Israel will be under US pressure to apply greater scrutiny, including Chinese investment in Israel’s high-tech sector, said Vance Serchuk, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and once a foreign policy adviser to former US Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.“In many cases on the surface, the companies that are working in these areas are not primarily focused on military applications, but the capabilities themselves have the potential to be leveraged for strategic impact,” Serchuk said. “Both Israelis and Americans agree that Israeli capabilities should never be leveraged or weaponized against the United States, but figuring out exactly what that means is very tricky.”

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Cyclone spares India's business capital from major damage-[Associated Press]-RAFIQ MAQBOOL, EMILY SCHMALL and ANIRUDDHA GHOSAL-June 3, 2020

MUMBAI, India (AP) — The first cyclone in more than a century to hit India's financial capital of Mumbai appeared to have largely spared the metropolis on Wednesday. No deaths or major damages were reported as workers began clearing fallen trees and other debris from affected areas along India's western coastline. As Cyclone Nisarga crossed the central state of Maharashtra, live TV coverage showed inky black clouds framing the Arabian Sea, and trees swaying wildly as rain pounded coastal towns and villages. In the state capital, Mumbai, home to Bollywood, India's largest stock exchange and more than 18 million residents, high winds whipped skyscrapers and ripped apart shanties near the beach.About 10,000 city residents were evacuated from their homes, municipal officials said. With powerful storms a rarity, there were no preexisting cyclone shelters, and many of the city's large and sturdy buildings have already been converted into coronavirus isolation or treatment facilities, National Disaster Response Force spokesman Krishan Kumar said."We moved people to other strong buildings where there is a supply of water,” he said.Such storms are less common in the Arabian Sea than on India’s east coast, and usually form later in the year. But Nisarga may represent ways in which the warming of oceans due to climate change is already altering lives, experts said.In the hours before the storm hit India's shores, drivers and peddlers deserted Mumbai's iconic Marine Drive, fishermen yanked their nets out of the wavy Arabian Sea and police shooed people away from beaches.Homes in city slums were boarded up and abandoned, and officials patrolled the streets, using bullhorns to order people to stay inside.Nisarga brought heavy rain and sustained winds of 100 to 110 kilometers (62 to 68 miles) per hour through Wednesday afternoon after slamming ashore near the city of Alibag, about 98 kilometers (60 miles) south of Mumbai, the Meteorological Department said.In Alibag, photos posted on Twitter by the disaster agency showed toppled carts, fallen trees scattered over roads and tin roofs ripped apart.Alibag absorbed some of the storm's power, reducing its impact on Mumbai, said Madhavan Rajeevan, secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The storm moved away from the city across Maharashtra state with its wind speed slowing to 85 kilometers (52 miles) per hour.Ahead of the storm, about 100,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas in Maharashtra and neighboring Gujarat. Both states, already among the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, activated disaster response teams, fearing extensive flooding could further impair overwhelmed health systems.“If hospitals and clinics are damaged by the cyclone, the city won’t be able to cope with the large number of COVID-19 cases, and social distancing measures will become virtually impossible to follow,” Bidisha Pillai, chief executive of Save the Children in India, said in a statement.About 200 COVID-19 patients in Mumbai were moved from a field hospital beneath a tent to another facility to avoid the risk of strong winds, officials said.S.N. Pradhan, director of India's National Disaster Response Force, said social distancing norms were being followed in evacuation shelters.“Let us fight this danger like we are standing up to the corona pandemic and are on our way to defeat it. Likewise, we will prevail over this situation too!” Maharashtra's top official, Chief Minister Uddhav Balasheb Thackeray, tweeted.Maharashtra, which accounts for more than a third of India's coronavirus cases, has seen the rate of infection slow in recent days, below India's national average.Officials in Mumbai and also in the central government in New Delhi have pinned hopes of an economic turnaround on a dramatic ease of restrictions this week after nine weeks of lockdown. India has reported more than 200,000 cases and 5,800 deaths due to the virus, and epidemiologists predict that the peak is still weeks away.Nisarga comes just two weeks after Cyclone Amphan tore through the Bay of Bengal on India’s east coast and battered West Bengal state, killing more than 100 people in India and neighboring Bangladesh. The frequency of cyclones in the Arabian Sea is predicted to increase, said Adam Sobel, a climate scientist at Columbia University. The temperature of the top layer of the sea, from which the cyclone draws its energy, is “unusually high,” said K.J. Ramesh, former chief of India’s Meteorological Department. Much more frequent and intense cyclones have been appearing over a shorter time in recent years due to climate change, he said.“Forecasting such storms becomes a challenge,” he said.___Schmall and Ghosal reported from New Delhi. SpaceX captures the flag, beating Boeing in cosmic contest-[The Canadian Press]-June 3, 2020

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The first astronauts launched by SpaceX declared victory Monday in NASA’s cosmic capture-the-flag game. They quickly claimed the prize left behind at the International Space Station nearly a decade ago by the last crew to launch from the U.S.“Congratulations, SpaceX, you got the flag,” NASA astronaut Doug Hurley said a day after arriving at the space station.Hurley showed off the small U.S. flag during a news conference and again in a linkup with SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California."You can bet we will take it with us when we depart back to Earth,” said Hurley, floating alongside Dragon crewmate Bob Behnken. The flag flew on the first space shuttle flight in 1981 and the final one in 2011. Hurley was on that last shuttle crew. The flag was an added incentive for Elon Musk's SpaceX company and Boeing, competing to be the first private company to launch a crew to the space station. Saturday’s liftoff of NASA astronauts was the first from the U.S. in nine years. Boeing's first astronaut flight isn’t expected until next year. The crew will include Chris Ferguson, commander of the last shuttle flight who now works for Boeing.“Proud to yield the title of “The last commander of an American launched spacecraft” to @Astro_Doug who, with @AstroBehnken, has returned US to space from KSC after 3,252 days. Well done,” Ferguson tweeted following the SpaceX liftoff. An estimated 100,000 people — suppliers, vendors, engineers, etc. — were responsible for Saturday's flawless launch of test pilots Hurley and Behnken aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center. The Dragon capsule, also built and owned by SpaceX, docked at the space station Sunday.“It’s awe-inspiring for all of us,” SpaceX manager Benji Reed told the astronauts from Hawthorne.Reed asked them about the Falcon ride. Hurley said he could feel when the rocket went transonic and broke the sound barrier. The final push to orbit, on the second stage, was full of vibrations and felt like "driving fast, very fast on a gravel road," he said. The astronauts instantly went from pulling more than three G's — more than three times the force of Earth's gravity — to zero gravity as soon as they reached orbit.“Sounds like the ultimate ride in a Batmobile with the jet engine turned on,” Reed said.Behnken said one of the first things he did upon reaching the orbiting lab was call his 6-year-old son, Theo, to hear what is was like to watch his father blast into space “and share that a little bit with him while it was still fresh in his mind."Hurley and Behnken spent Monday making sure their docked Dragon is ready to make an emergency getaway, if necessary. The capsule will serve as their lifeboat during their space station visit. They joined three station residents — an American and two Russians.NASA will decide in the coming weeks how long to keep the pair there. Their mission could last anywhere from one to four months. The timing will depend on Dragon checkouts in orbit and launch preparations for the company's next astronaut flight, currently targeted for the end of August. With so much uncertainty and so many variables, Behnken said it was a little hard explaining to his son when he'd back.“From his perspective, he's just excited that we're going to get a dog when I get home,” Behnken said with a smile.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education.
